Reviews (page 4 of 12)

Wild, wild desert foxes in an intergalactic firework.

laut und toll

Great rock album! Pioneers of Heavy Metal and hard rock. For me this is a 8.8 out of 10

I don’t know any of these songs. Let’s go!!🤘 Ok, this album is just great. Even the “slow song” for track three is powerful. Loving this journey.

Great individual performances and vibe. Less focused in the songwriting than Machine Head

riiffs

Loved it. Roots of metal

Some sick guitar leads and harmonies. Deep Purple has sadly been categorized as a meme-y band because of Smoke on the Water and shadowed by Led Zeppelin. But damn, that organ could’ve been mixed a little lower.

Good rock/metal

Deep Purple are one of those bands I almost feel like I shouldn't like just because they are often grouped together with other bands of their era that I definitely don't like, but every time I listen to an album of theirs like this, I just can't help but love it. The musicianship is genuinely so good, and considering the standards of the time, the ideas and techniques they use are really impressive.

I like deep purple. I like this

Half of it was awesome, other half was solid, really good for 1970, fun listen

Deep Purple is one of those bands where the albums tend to be up and down, a classic or two and then several duds. This album is the exception, Speed King and Child in Time are definitely classics but there's no real duds on this album.

4 This frickin rocked dude ! 🤟

I was so sure I would not like this album, not being the biggest rock fan, but I had a great time listening to this!

I was surprised that I liked this album so much! The quirky elements added throughout the album made it such a fun and interesting. Listen. I was pleasantly surprised by the keys added into many of the songs, I’m not sure if it was an organ so forgive me if I’m wrong. The drums were enthralling. This album is the perfect thing to listen to on a heavy weightlifting day at the gym.

Black Breast Chinese Eyes 1001 Albums Generator 127 (09/26/2025) Deep Purple In Rock is the first studio album in the so-called "Mark II" lineup of Deep Purple, which is responsible for most of their most highly acclaimed albums. I have always underestimated Deep Purple's influence on heavy metal, even though I know people would say it exists, because I only knew them for their hits, which are not particularly heavy. However, DPiR is completely changing my tone. This thing is so heavy. Speed King is an amazing display of musicality and shows that you actually can have an organ in heavy music. Flight of the Rat is insane and feels almost punky at times. The back and forth solos between guitars and organ is really impressive, as is the drum solo near the end. Into the Fire isn't my favorite song here, but it is absolutely one of the heaviest. Hard Lovin' Man just kind of sounds like an Iron Maiden song at points with its gallopping guitar and powerful drums. The other side of this album is its very proggy nature on certain songs. The most obvious example of this is Child in Time, which is an epic statement that ebbs and flows wonderfully and is probably my favorite song overall. The aforementioned Flight of the Rat and Hard Lovin' Man both have very progressive structures as well. I think that the second half of Deep Purple in Rock is a little bit weaker, but overall, this is a great album. 4/5 Favs: Speed King Child In Time Flight Of The Rat Least Fav: Living Wreck

Speed King - 7/10 Bloodsucker - 9/10 Child in Time - 8/10 Flight of the Rat - 9/10 Into the Fire - 8/10 Living Wreck - 10/10 Hard Lovin' Man - 9/10

Nice! Great guitar on this one. It did start getting a bit repetitive at parts but swiftly moved on 4 ⭐️

Very good.

A rickety bridge between prog and metal. All of it was good but none of it grabbed me like it should.

Surprised to like this a lot

I know my friend will crucify me for this one, but I just do not get deep purple. Not to say that it is a bad record, but I just don’t really get it. In my heart it‘s a 3/5, but to keep the peace I will give it a 4/5

Child in time good

Pretty sure the only thing I’ve heard by Deep Purple before this was “Smoke on the Water.” I had pretty low expectations from a band that created the easiest song to learn on a guitar. Five seconds into track one I realized I was wrong.

88% Best: Speed King; Bloodsucker; Child in Time; Flight of the Rat Must-Hear? Sure

Hellye

Deep Purple - Deep Purple In Rock 1970 3/1001 ~ Well, this most certainly fucks, but I done been knew. “Child in Time” forever!

I do love deep purple usually, and maybe it was just not what I was feeling on Friday, but it was okay! Just didn't grab my attention like I figured it would. Not bad by any means.

Pretty fun all around. Really enjoyed it will listen again. Love how they just fucking go do it all the time with no let up.

For no actually, good reason, I always thought of Deep purple as a second tier band. They're no Zeppelin or Queen. They're just a middling rock band with a couple of hits. I thought this even though hundred of people and reviews I've read place them squarely at the upper echelons of rock. My bad for not digging in a bit more. This is such a quality album. The music is really good throughout. Ian Gillan has serious pipes and I actually quite like Jon Lord's keyboards. (Have to admit I rarely heap praise on keyboardists. Seems like the least rocking of the available rock instruments.) Richie Blackmore is all over the place, especially wildly at the beginning of Speed King. When I first saw it, I was wondering why they picked this fairly early number with no real hits. But I'm glad it's here. I'll listen to this again.

Really enjoyed this. A proper rock album. High octane and as heavy as fuck for the time. I don’t know why Deep Purple bypassed me for the most part over the years, despite being raised on rock and metal. Love the production on this too - feels raw and live. Particularly Roger Glover’s bass. All involved shine here though. Great album

hell yeah

Surprised I had never heard it before. Very impressed.

Incredible guitar

Solid rock album

Mostly good; a few ponderous tracks.

I can see why a lot of my favorite bands love Deep Purple. They’re solid.

This is good but you probably have to be in a very specific mood to listen to it on the regular.

Child in time one of the best songs ever written

The best players doing their thang

1970 was a brilliant year to play an electric guitar.

I tend to forget how much fun Deep Purple is.

4 - great rock album

Otro que hacía mucho que no escuchaba. Gran disco.

Another nice album structure. 7 tracks, 43 minutes. Done. And a hell of an opening to smack you in the face…. Fierce, fast paced and layered. A nice start. For some reason, not what I thought Deep Purple were about but very glad to be re-educated! Yeh, I can dig this! The organ solos, the stacattos, the soul, the ROCK 🤟🏻 Bit of a step down for ‘Child in Time’ and a few too many wails for me, but redeemed by the tom rolls, guitar solo and picking up of pace half way through and turns out to be a hell of a journey of a track! (Shame about the return of the wails!!) Production and sound are so spot on as well. Perfect distortion and mix. Great drummer. Unexpectedly great album and excited to listen again already. Have I become a deep purple fan?! EPIC and what an end to the album 🥵 (4.5)

I don’t like Deep Purple all that much, but this was very good.

Another rock classic. Objectively the song is kinda silly, but this record is worth the price of the guitar solo on Child in Time.

Buen rock.

Bad ass, heavy ass rock from top to bottom. No frills, no pretense, just bangers. I've always seen Deep Purple included in discussions of the progenitors of hard rock and metal, but the tunes I was aware of didn't fully illustrate exactly why they belong there. I get it now. Just a slight demerit because the vocal parts (while impressive) don't have the tight form or hookiness I'm personally looking for in my bad ass, heavy ass rock. Whack ass album cover, by the way. They really thought they were cooking with that one.

4 out of 5. This album fucking rocks.

Heavy stuff.

Rock and roll baby! This is the definition.

J'aurais mis 5 juste pour Child in Time qui est sublime mais j'enlève une étoile pour les synthés.

Legendary rock album. Should have closed with child in time

Very nice and clearly an album that has put its mark on history. 'Living Wreck' gives me a lot of "Smoke on the Water" vibes so it's easy to hear where that would come from a few years later. Standouts Flight of the Rat Living Wreck 4/5

"Deep Purple in Rock" is the fourth studio album by English rock band Deep Purple. Hard rock and heavy metal are the Wiki-listed genres. Bingo. It was their first album studio album with the Mark II line-up where vocalist Ian Gillian replaced Rod Evans and bassist Roger Glover replaced Nick Simper. Existing bandmembers included guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, organist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice. The band, Blackmore in particular, wanted a heavier album than their previous ones. Mission accomplished. The album received critical praise as a key example of hard rock and heavy metal with one critic crediting it with inventing heavy metal along with Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and Uriah Heep's "Uriah Heep." The album was also their commercial breakthrough in Europe reaching #4 in the UK (#143 in the US). The album opens with "Speed King," a song attempting to emulate Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." A fast-paced distorted guitar and chaotic drumming succeed in accomplishing that in the introduction. A long organ note leads to the vocals and band kicking in. Wow, this sounds like the MC5 and is not far off from punk. Gillian randomly sings excerpts from Little Richard songs towards the end. "Child in Time" has a jazzy start with organ keys and slow drums. Gillian sings softly but gradually builds to a scream and shows his range. The band's pace picks up too. Blackmore gives a searing guitar solo in this epic 10-minute song. The song was inspired by the cold war and used as an anthem by the anti-communist resistance of Eastern Europe against the Iron Curtain. The second side begins with "Flight of the Rat," a song that evolved during rehearsals from rearranging the opera song "Flight of the Bumblebee." A driving guitar riff with the underlying organ. Another searing Blackmore solo. The album closes with "Hard Lovin' Man." It's a song that was derived from a Glover bass riff and is a blueprint for the classic Deep Purple sound where they would climax with in "Highway Star." Driving guitar, bass and drums. The organ has a 60's psychedelic edge to it. The interplay between the guitar and organ is great with the constant bass and beat. This album has songs that are driving and fast and ones with a slower, heavier pace, almost grungy. Blackmore plays a variety of classic guitar riffs. With the underlying organ, this gives a unique sound. The vocals and vocal range of Gillian complete the picture. You can hear the influence in future heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden. This is a classic album and rightly put into the early key heavy metal album category. A must listen for any hard rock fan.

7/10 - I like it, very Led Zeppelinesque, the recording on the alst track can be improved when messing around with Stereo, it's like they got carried away with the new tech and just started messing around with it

Funny that a band named for such a terrible colour band would make such a terrific rock band. No wonder Dad doesn't listen to new music. Fav track: Hard Lovin' Man

My only prior exposure to Deep Purple was the song Smoke on the Water so I didn’t really know what to expect with this. It was pretty great if I’m honest, especially Child in Time that was epic.

Thought this was really good for what can be a slightly monotonous genre of rock albums. Couple of really good songs & the rest quite engaging

I like the twang of that guitar 🎸. Deep Purple has the right balance of beats and rhythm that hits well and doesn't repeat in a boring. Paired with solid vocals, this album is entertaining for sure. 8/10

Svårt att inte gilla detta. Bra driv och tempo rakt igenom, feta gitarrer och grym sång, med några höjdpunkter som Child in time och Living wreck. Stabil fyra.

Highlight Song/s: Bloodsucker, Flight of the Rat and Into the Fire 'Speed King' was a bit of a weird song with that amazing intro and that fairly long downtime at the beginning, and with its references to rock 'n' roll seemed quite an odd choice. Then it got significantly better with 'Bloodsucker'; what a crazy good riff that song has. Just all around a good one. 'Child in Time' was extremely underwhelming, I was expecting something a bit more. No clue why they settled with that weird squealing in the song, especially by the end it got really grating. 'Flight of the Rat' has a great instrumental section, that drum section in the last minute or so was really odd, I KIND of like it, kind of not. 'Into the Fire' has the best vocals of any track. it also has the best main riff of any of the songs. Also superb rhythm section. 'Living Wreck' has this weird Mountain Lion sounding part which was really off-putting. It also has great vocals. 'Hard Lovin' Man' starts with this laser-like sound from the keyboardist which is a bit strange. The keyboard solo in this one is pretty cool and sounds quite warpy at times. The last minute of this album (and song) is incredible.

This was my first experience with Deep Purple, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I incredibly enjoyed it. Fast, upbeat rock with excellent guitar and drum solos. "Living Wreck" and "Bloodsucker" stood out to me. "Child of Time" was beautiful, as well. Will definitely be diving into some more Purple in the future. Really hard rock is probably the genre I know the least about. I know the trendy names, but its development and history are a mystery to me. I think listening to "In Rock" helped to demystify it a bit, but I hope I get more titles from the genre later on. If not, I'll need to explore it on my own.

I enjoyed this album, i have listened to this album before but still good to come back and re listen

When did the electric organ fall out of favor? Such an underrated rock instrument

3.5 - Good

Love this album, it’s definitely one you have to be in the mood for.

Didn't realize it was 10 years earlier than what it sounded like. My bad

The first half of the album is fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed Deep Purple's sound, which I was not expecting from a 1970 album. The second half was still good, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much.

Umm woah. Wtf. This is amazing! The guitar work 😭 could bring a tear to the most stoic of eyes (mine).

This fucking rocks. I can just picture myself in a dank club in the early 70s, face melting off. My favorite aspect of this album is the organ. Shit rips. I’m a total noob, I only ever knew “Smoke on the Water,” turns out that’s not fair to these dudes’ ability to shred. I mean damn. ML 172.

I listened to the wrong Deep Purple album (Machine Head)—out of order, as it turns out. I vastly prefer this one. It’s more raw and dangerous-sounding, where Machine Head is basic to the point of being dull. There’s more sonic variety and exploration here, and the songs are more consistently good. The screams and theatricality of “Child in Time” evokes Arthur Brown (“Fire”), while I also hear echoes of Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar playing and tone are fire. I would definitely play this album when the mood strikes.

390/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Old school 70s hard rock, Blackmore is a king.

Liked it much better than I thought I would

I did my involuntary stank face for a good chunk of this one.

Quite the album; no weak points. 9/10

Pretty good album, but I don't think I'd play any of these songs on their own. The extended jamming gets a bit much. I reckon these guys would have been a blast to see live though

A fantastic proto-metal album. Ian Gillian has never sounded better. The rock is spot on, sharing the stage with some funk and some classical. This is my cup of whiskey. 4/5

This album was great! I’ve never listened to a lot of Deep Purple until somewhat recently beyond their radio hits. From the guitar solos, drum solos, and vocals (especially on Child in Time) this album was versatile and a building block on metal music to come.

Gosto das faixas mais progressivas aqui, especialmente a Child In Time. Prima canção. Me agradou tremendamente a percussão demonstrada aqui.

Hooooooooly shit. Machine Head looms so large and is such a mediocre album that it would make you think Deep Purple had to be consigned to the greatest hits pile. Then you throw this on and it’s some of the hardest shit north of Black Sabbath. This album is the real indicator of Deep Purple’s metal credentials, the real reason so many were inspired by them. They’ve got everything on this record, from arena rock to metal to prog and some straight up riffs that seeped their way into everything else that came in the 70s and early 80s. Plus they’re distorting that organ so much that it just acts as another guitar. This is some heavy, deep, good shit. Way better than the nonsense they’d throw out a couple years later.

Day536 - the rock was better than advertised but the prog killed the mood

Weird. Different. Infinitely listenable in the background while working.

Well I’m just like everyone else and like Child in Time the most. This album was a surprise.

Deep Purple were ready to turn a new leaf in the spirit of the new decade and, with In Rock, they became a prime example of a new force in the increasingly amorphous rock world. Gone was the gimmicky collaborations with orchestras, in was the heavy riffage that was bound to compete with the emergent talents of Sabbath and Zeppelin and Deep Purple do an impeccable enough job to go toe-to-toe and deliver blow by blow to the ears of those willing to listen. Of course, it can only get louder and heavier from here. Favorites: Speed King, Child in Time, Flight of the Rat, Into the Fire, Hard Lovin' Man.

Deep Purple really are (to me) what people say classic rock is in their mind, the sort of super fast and heavy rock that makes defined the era. Except only very few bands really were like that, and some don't really deliver in every respect of being cool, creative and putting out pure bangers, Deep Purple does tho and I love them for that

Was looking forward to this one but a bit underwhelmed by the first 2 tracks on first listen. Then it all took off after the Classic Child In Time. One great song after another and a very nice early example of the genre!

Feeling tight nipples here, extraordinary.

First reaction to the first 10 seconds of the first song: Jesus Christ!! Okay!!! It’s the 70s!!! Solid Top Gear driving compilation album music. I am surprised by how much I like this. Get freaky, boys. I don’t know if they actually made it onto the School of Rock soundtrack but they sound like they should have (this can be taken as an insult or a compliment depending on personal inclination). I always thought I was born to be a father not a mother and this album has proven me right. I like how big it is, I like the wail/scream singing. Really enjoyed myself. All that’s left to say is: rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme - you better get me to school on time.

Iconic classic rock album. Outisde of the obvious hits like Speed King and Child in Time, you have some guitar masterclasses on tracks like Bloodsucker, killer vocals throughout and further proving why Deep Purple are an essential listen in the world of rock.

Solid hard rock jytä!

Was kinda fire

I enjoyed this, harder than most 70s albums on this list. Lots of intense riffs and chugging guitars.

Deep Purple is a band that constantly reinvented themselves with varying levels of success. Deep Purple In Rock is the start of Deep Purple Mk2, the most acclaimed and arguably best era. Here, Deep Purple makes the leap from quality psych act to iconic early metal band with remarkable grace. They get a lot right here, thick guitar tone, exciting solos, wailing vocals, this is truly an underrated piece of classical metal canon that probably should be mentioned with bands like Black Sabbath. I will say, the lyrics here are a little silly and some of these songs don’t quite earn their length, but this is still a really great album. The songs have some great parts: great melodies, great solos from everyone, by the end I was even sold on the synth organ. I honestly don’t have a ton to say, it’s pretty great. I’ll give this a very high 3. Edit: I think I may have scored this a little how for how generally positive I feel about it. Besides, I think the performances, solos, and guitar tone here justify a low 4 soundly enough.

Great album, already added to my playlists. Good example of proto-metal and shows a high degree of skill and enthusiasm.

Not as good as their album machine head but still good

Haven't started listening, but I want to! Very excited for this <3 I sent this to my dad and he was very nostalgic about it. I feel like I could listen to this only while going VERY fast. It does make me want to rock and I really appreciate the artistry behind the length of the songs. None of them really dragged, which must have been incredibly difficult to pull off. I think I am going to put this in the "run it back" playlist on my spotify. I need a second, maybe third listen through to dive deeper into the lyrics. So far, I really resonate with "the flight of the rat" for pretty clear reasons.

"Child in Time" is a classic. The long jams here are really cool. 4 stars

I've heard some Deep Purple songs before but never anything off this album and certainly not enough to make an informed opinion on them. Have they always sounded this similar to Led Zeppelin? That's the vibe I got through the first 3 songs of the album at least. Love the back-to-back long songs Child In Time and Flight Of The Rat (the riff towards the end of this song sounds so similar to a Green Day song off American Idiot). The drum solo at the end of Flight kicks so much ass. This album jams hard and was a fun listen. Pretty solid 4 that could creep towards high 4/low 5 territory on repeated listens.

This is some solid straight-shooting rock and roll. Crusty AF production suits this just fine as it rips end to end with the wild and wonky Child in Time standing at the center. I feel like of the classic rock powerhouses, Deep Purple have one of the most satisfying overall sounds, complete with proto hair metal vocal falsetto. high 4 / 5 for me.

Hell yeah prog rock. Child in time was great. High 4

Deep Purple is just absolute rock. Even with this album not having any of its mega hits on it, still just fuckin rips. Obligatory Child in Time is in Twister mention, greatest movie of all time. Not quite sure this can be a 5 but is very close. Highest of 4s

First time hearing. Fine. Good loud blues rock or metal. Nothing jumped out at me but wasn’t bad. Heard again. Groundbreaking. Love it love it.

Thought this album would be too heavy for me, and it definitely was at some points. Overall, I enjoyed the listen. Very groovy at times, but it really shreds. Solid listen.

classic hard rock/blues from Purple mark II not every track is a banger

good stuff, deep purple was on the same compilation cd re: physical graffiti so also familiar

Rock solid

Not amazing, but pretty good! I much prefer machine head.

These dudes are rockin! Thick sounds, distortion pedals, jamming for 10 minutes because why do they have to play by YOUR rules, power riffs, hair metal style yells!! You can clearly tell how this influenced 70s heavy rock and heavy metal to follow, you should listen while working with power tools.

This album rocks HARD. Love the screaming and the progressive nature of Child In Time. Perfect for headbangin' to. Can hear some glimpses of "Smoke on the Water" through the latter half of the album. Wife hated it.

Big balls of rock

Deep Purple! On TBU!

SOOOO much more fun than led zep.

Stands well as some just straightforward rock with remarkable consistency across the album. It was all enjoyable to listen to, but there also wasn’t anything that stood out as memorable

Speeeeeeeeed kiiiiiiing!!!

This rocks!

Solid.

Great album. I listened through it twice. 4/5

Überraschend hochqualitatives dad rock album.

This is a pretty unforgiving thing. Not an easy listen, but a bit of work to chew through. I like it, but it's not for everyone and every day. What rewards you in (in full length!) the ... Fav track: Child in Time

Oh oh ! What a blast, this is an unleashed band, full on throttle...it is very exhilarating... As a teenager, I loved it. Now some songs are a bit pointless. Still child in time, what a song...that breaks the waves...

I do enjoy some Deep Purple, but their self-titled debut isn’t quite on the same level as what came later. That said, it’s still a solid listen, especially when you remember it’s their first crack at it. You can hear the pieces starting to come together — the organ-heavy sound, the mix of hard rock and psych — but it doesn’t hit as hard as Machine Head or In Rock. Still, it’s got charm, some cool moments, and the foundation of a band that would go on to be legends. Favorite song: "Flight of the Rat"

The last DP album I reviewed was live, glad to see this one is not. It doesn’t start that strong, but then “Child In Time” kick starts the ruckus. There are other gems that are overlooked. “Flight of the Rat” is a hard track, but “Into the Fire” takes you to another place. “Living Wreck” should be the finale over “Hard Lovin’ Man” but both are great tracks also.

All sixes and sevens.

“Speed king” is an absolute banger. It moves around a lot but keeps the feeling throughout. Good stuff. It’s hard to listen to it as it was when it came out after listening to so many groups that expanded upon this sound, but even as is it was still quite strong. I think child in time needed some more polish but the idea of these low to high builds is solid.

In Rock is where Deep Purple stopped dabbling and fully committed to being loud, fast, and gloriously over-the-top. From the thunderous opener Speed King to the screaming chaos of Hard Lovin’ Man, the album is a nonstop showcase of raw power and wild instrumental fireworks. Ian Gillan wails like he’s trying to set off car alarms, and Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar work is equal parts razor-sharp and theatrical. It’s aggressive, energetic, and absolutely helped lay the groundwork for what would become heavy metal. That said, it’s not always the most refined listen. The band’s intensity sometimes spills over into indulgence, with songs stretching a bit longer than they need to and solos that feel more about showing off than serving the song. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. In Rock isn’t trying to be subtle—it’s here to shake the walls, melt a few amps, and leave you slightly dazed. It might not be perfect, but it’s undeniably iconic

Every one of the musicians on this album belong on their own instrument’s Mount Rushmore.

Great guitar riffs keyboards and dark moods... Definitely one to listen to again...

I absolutely adore Deep Purple. Well, I adore classic lineup Deep Purple. Can you even call them Deep Purple when they're missing Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, John Lord, or Ritchie Blackmore? Sure Gillan and Pace are with the band currently, but Lord is dead and Blackmore isn't with the band. No, Deep Purple isn't Deep Purple without these guys, and I won't hear otherwise. I was surprised at how long each of these tracks was. I really didn't expect it to be any kind of jammy, especially given Gillan's vocal ability - let that man cook, if you ask me. But it was cool to hear these amazing musicians really get a chance to stretch their legs a bit. "Speed King" felt a little rehash-y of "Highway Star," and some of the tracks are simply too long. But "Child in Time"? "Child in Time" is simply incredible. And John Lord's work on "Flight of the Rat" is some of his best. I'd really only heard one other studio album from Deep Purple before, and that was of course "Machine Head." It's hard to top that album, what with its classic tracks and cohesive sound (can you deny "Space Truckin"?). But this came much closer than expected and I really just wanted more. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Bloodsucker, Child in Time, Flight of the Rat

Didn’t recognize any of the songs but this was a solid album. Also, their Spotify about the artist is maybe the most creative I’ve ever seen.

I enjoyed this one.

I was ar a school dance ran by a very tall man. Getting shoes for the dance was the same as exchanging for ice skates. Peter Dinklage was with us and a part of a band that was playing the dance. The rest is fading. There is a brief memory of meeting g Christain and David at David's cabin. It seemed to also belong to my parents

Solid jam album. Short and sweet. 8/10

The first Deep Purple album I owned. Not sure if it's my favorite of theirs but it's up there.

This is Spinal Tap! Fun album. I dig it.

I feel bad that I didn't listen to this while careening down the highway at 95 mph, but other than that, I have no regrets. I have undersold these guys.

Not my cup of tea but a classic

Child in time is simply stunning

Shreds

Ik hou altijd wel van Deep Purple. Lekker rocken!

Enjoyed quite a bit.

Fucking sick. Would relisten

Some "fuck yeah" hard rock on here. And these dudes are rock hard.

came for 0-3-5 but found jesus. lament the dearth, er, death of heavy metal organ.

True classic line up and album

Awesome

Proto Metals. I liked Hard Lovin Man & Child in Time.

Excellent rock album.

Honestly I didn’t think I’d be into this, but it was a lot easier to listen to and to enjoy than I thought! The songs weren’t too just all over the place. There was a clear vision and execution. This might have been the first album where I thought - this is just a great album. But since I probably wouldn’t listen to this again unless I HAD to choose metal - this is 4 stars for me

Yes, this rocks. I probably I prefer this to its peers, but I’m not all that interested in the whole “which British rock band started heavy metal in the early 70’s” conversation which is apparently so important to a lot of people.

Speed King 3.8 Bloodsucker 3.6 Child in Time 4 Flight of the Rat 3.8 Into the Fire 3.6 Living Wreck 3.7 Hard Lovin' Man 3.4 Score: 3.7

I dig the vibe. Groovy, funky, driving. It's all there.

This was their debut?? Just came out swinging that hard right out the gate. Fun and high octane rock, great movement in the songs, fun guitar solos. These guys are much more that smoke on the water

Digging this. Feels like real hard rock. There is some animalistic screaming, but it works. Will be relistening!

Good screaming and I love the organ

Extremely rocking and grooving, which is a quality that I don't think we see a lot in those old hard-rock albums. Ian Gillan's screams on "Child of Time" are highly satisfying!

Nisam ovaj album sluša od 1999. Ajmo vidit.

Mark II of Deep Purple - Starts off with a bang with Speed King. In my opinion, Child in Time is the best song on this album. Not my favorite Deep Purple disk, that would be Machine Head but this is a very solid offering and I always enjoy it when I throw it on the turntable from time to time.

Inspirerede rush Metallica osv.

I actually liked this a lot more than I was expecting. I might give this another listen at some point.

hell yeah

loved this proto-metal album. Child in Time stands out for guitar solo and the crazy vocal range in the "Ah-ahs", I find myself impersonating the Phantom as he commands Christine, "SING my angel of music" lol. knowing that the song is about the cold war and the BS of the time provides a smidge of comfort in tyring to understand today's nonsense.

This song rocks harder and is more engaging than other rock albums we've listened to imo, plus they bring in that the Doors-era psych spin to their music, so 4/5

First play through I thought it was bleh, then I listened to it while driving around and it was way better? They have more of a heavy metal sound than I was expecting.

Deep Purple is a British Band who have had an incredibly long career as one of the central figures in "classic rock." They made guitar and bass driven, heavy, hard rock, before it was called metal. Deep Purple in Rock is the band's fourth album, and the first to find significant success. Led by Ian Gillan's wailing vocals, the band's energy and technical ability helped define heavy metal in the early 70s, with Black Sabbath and Uriah Heap. This album showed the band developing its successful sound, and helped propel the band's career.

I only know Smoke On The Water and while this didn’t completely blow my socks off, this was a great listen and great example of 70s hard rock/metal.

Classic early metal. 4/5.

It’s Deep Purple being Deep Purple, no compromises in the heavy sound, no compromises in track length, even with this regular-length album. Speed King brings you up to speed with what the album will sound like, with Child in Time fully demonstrating the outer reaches of Deep Purple’s sound by the end of the first side. And side two holds up well too, making this a seriously complete record. It’s one of hundreds of late 60s / early 70s rock records that seem to each be unique and each be fantastic in their own right, and I’m nowhere near to hearing all of them.

Fantastic classic rock album!

Dad Rock at its finest!

Alright

Went right Into the Fire on this one.

I liked this album quite a bit actually, even if I think a few of the songs ran a bit overtime. There were some truly amazing riffs that I feel echo even in more recent rock music that uses similar distortion. Once again, my biggest complaint is the length of some of the songs overstaying their welcome, but overall a good album.

Goddamn I always thought I was more of a Sabbath gal, but maybe not. that knocked my socks off. That man can sing. I also definitely liked it more the second listen. Takes a minute to marinate

awesome rock, can’t believe it’s 1970

phenomenal guitar solo and next level voice from the vocalist, not to mention the drums

Well, we all know Child in Time. It is a great album. However, you do see the gap in talent between Deep Purple and actual prog rock bands. Hence 4 stars for me.

I’ll round up, due to its creativity and influence on Sunny.

Impressive energy and good rock music. Could do with a bit less of the screaming.

Good stuff. Along with Thin LIzzy, this project has introduced me to some excellent hard rock that I might not have been likely to discover at an album level. Makes it worthwhile listening to the Sex Packets and Duck Stabs. But what a price to pay. . .

Only have heard Smoke on the Water from Deep Purple before listening to this album. Hot start on Speed King. Child in Time rips. Flight of the Rat has some, dare I say, Hendrixesque strats. Hear shades of King Crimson and dash, just a dash of Zeppelin.

Classic rock at its finest

Wouldn’t listen again necessarily but i enjoyed this way more than i thought! It really rocked! Favorites were speed king and flight of the rat. Not my style but for what it is, it rules.

Virgin Robert plant vs the Chad Ian gillan

This is much better than I expected. I thought it would be a generic 70s rock album, but this is actually fantastic. The solos are great, the rhythm section is tight and driving, the organ is actually a nice touch, and the vocals are solid. I'd add some of this to a playlist.

Super duper

While this is not my favorite Deep Purple album it has some highlights that were the genesis of heavy metal. DP along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin began the movement toward a harder rock sound and in all three bands that sound foundation was a great rhythm section. This is where that heavy sound originates. while not my favorite this is still fun to listen to.

Good music

Great rock. You can hear what would quickly become heavy metal in so many of the tracks.

This album has a classic sound and outstanding songwriting.

I prefer Sabbath as far as 70s hard rock/metal goes but these guys are really solid too. Definitely influential.

Nice album!

AAaaaaaAAaaaaa

Throw me in the camp that only knows Deep Purple for Smoke on the Water. They’re a band that was pretty popular in their time that I don’t really know much about. Deep Purple In Rock is a great introduction to their deeper work. Elements of metal and prog were welcome to my ears. It’s heavy and psychedelic at times. Child in Time is a banger. Really solid album.

This album is THICK with sound. A driving rhythm section, big distortion, and versatile organ usage make for a sound modern stoner rock constantly seeks to emulate. This is a Jam. Probably a 4.5, but I'm stoked!

A big fan of the Purple -

Good, classic psychedelic rock. Bloodsucker is killer. I can hear the influence these guys had in later bands. Nice guitar shredding on Child in Time, right into a super cool bridge with the keys and slow build up for the finale. Good stuff. Solid 70's album that I'll give a 3.9 rounded up to a 4.

Classic Rock

Deep Purple In Rock certainly shows that Deep Purple is some of the best in rock (my jokes are so great, aren't they). I initially went into this album thinking that Machine Head would be the better album from these guys but as i kept listening, this album proved me wrong. It still has the trend from Machine Head of having the best songs at the end of the album but this album somehow remained more consistent with it's quality throughout over Machine Head. It, of course, still shows some great musicianship from the band throughout it all. This album most certainly, is a great one. Best Song: Into the Fire Worst Song: Speed King

Deep Purple in Rock is one of the most essential hard rock and heavy metal albums. The energy on this record is insane; every track is packed with power, and the band sounds like they’re on fire. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar work is incredible, of course, he’s a legend, and Ian Gillan’s vocals are just insane. The whole band delivers top-tier performances, making this one of their most intense albums. ‘Child in Time’ is the standout masterpiece, building from a haunting ballad into one of the most powerful climaxes in rock history. But what makes this album amazing is that even without another track on that level, every song is still so good. ‘Speed King’ and ‘Flight of the Rat’ explode with energy, and the drumming and organ work add so much depth to the sound. This album helped shape the sound of hard rock and heavy metal, and it still holds up today. It’s fast, loud, and packed with incredible performances. Easily one of Deep Purple’s best.

Deep Purple ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The opening of the first track is bloody ridiculous… but it then drops into a ridiculously brilliant opener! I instantly got a flashback to learning ‘Speed King’ in a guitar lesson. This album is so over the top and cliched, but also kind of perfect. Are cliches ok if you invented them? Don’t bother with the lyrics. Don’t moan about the preposterous solos. Avoid comparing to Spinal Tap 😥 Just let that rock n roll wash over you. Highlights: Speed King 👑 Child of Time - the most overblown and ridiculous song of them all - but it’s brilliant. Lowlights: The lyrics just need to be totally ignored. The words. The sentences. Did I mention the lyrics?

Good listen that

Really fun album, those boys know how to rock 4.4/5

Classic dad rock, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. Every song is a driving groove. Want some riffs? Want some guy screaming to an orgasm (possibly?)? Want drum fills a-plenty? Mad man twisting an organ for your pleasure? This has them all!

Good psychedelic rock, heavy on the Hammond.

This is #day113 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... look ma, I can play the guitar! But I can also play the bass, the drums, and the organ. Believe it or not, I've got a four-octave range to boot! Jokes aside, this album is a classic of heavy metal and hard rock. That said, it does feel like music from another time... It's super technical and, at times, almost hilariously so. I'm giving it a 4 out of 5, mainly because "Child in Time" is a monumental song. But then there are "Speed King" and "Hard Lovin' Man", right? Looking forward to #day114.

It's weird to hear Ian Gillian, because the first thing I think I ever heard him in was "Jesus Christ Superstar." So the primal screams he puts in the songs sound... weird. "Bloodsucker" weirdly reminded me of "I Am The Walrus". "Child In Time"... I never really liked the song. The screaming Gillian does... it never worked for me. Same for "Hard Workin' Man" But aside from that, they still rocked pretty hard. Top tracks: "Speed King," "Flight Of The Rat"

This is a pumpin' album. And heavy. Every song except for Child in Time seems to have the same formula - come in hot with pulsing guitars & bass, hard hitting drums, and a droning organ. It's cool even if it sometimes gets a bit old. But then almost every song overdoes it at some point - too decadent. Organs that play too abrasively, guitars that get too scratchy or experimental, Ian Gillan wailing just a bit too much (I really loved his vocals but I did wonder if all his screams were needed). Or runs a little longer than needed - Child in Time, Flight of the Rat, and Hard Lovin Man are all great tunes, but they didn't have to be as long as they were. This is a very good album but I don't think it's as good as Machine Head. So I'm giving it a 4 even though I think it might be a little higher than that.

Not their best

Excellent

Pretty good! Even the remastered version still leans a little too noise-rock on a few tracks for my personal tastes, but this was a largely enjoyable listen. I really only knew Deep Purple from "Smoke on the Water" so it was nice to learn that they were also hard-rock forefathers. 4.0

Child in time lost me - very long and very screamy flight of the rat grabbed me back though, as much as I didn't enjoy the first I loved the second and more

I love a good organ guitar combo

Classic British Hard Rock, with just a touch of roll from the maestro Ian Paice

I always forget how HARD they were. This is amazing.

Good rock

solid hard rock

More metal than I expected from Deep Purple, not really my thing, but it was a fun ride.

8/10 Album kojeg znam od prije ali kojeg nisam dovoljno cijenio, a ni cuo sto godina. Pitak od pocetka do kraja. Child In Time (u originalu Bombay Calling od It's A Beautiful Day, nedavno saznao da nije bas njihova) je ipak lijepo cuti opet nakon toliko vremena, ali mi je definitivno highlight s ovog albuma ponovno otkrivena Flight Of The Rat. Dobra peglaona, konkretni riffovi i agresivni u pravim trenucima.

Enjoyed this

That was pretty great.

I was surprised by this one. I fully expected to think it was fine. It's actually really good. A clear precursor to stoner rock that really holds up. Not quite a 5 for me, but I'm happy to give it a 4.

A solid 70s rock record filled with great jams and cool riffs. Kept me interested the entire way through. Though some parts dragged on a bit in a couple songs. Favorite track: Speed King

Great hard rock

A step below 'Machine Head' but still excellent rock. Now, time to dive into this band's 'Mark X line-up' rabbit hole.

Oh yeah, early heavy metal. Into it.

Classic dad rock, on the heavy side. Rotational along with Machine Head

Dad rock to the extreme, fun mindless noise, it's simple and dumb but that's fine

Sludgey rock. Like Black Sabbath but less evil. Jammy. There is plenty of time on each song for the mushrooms to kick in, that’s for sure. The solos don’t drag on too long, not that I think that is possible but if you were concerned about it, no need to…..fret. I don’t have anything for my choice cut. It’s the same formula for each song. Nothing wrong with that but not a perfect album.

Really great album, love the voices. My partner’s father’s favourite band so was well overdue a listen. Fave songs are ‘Speed King’ and ‘Living Wreck’.

Deep Purple. No comment.

This is the first album I’ve encountered so far that 1. I already own a copy of 2. That I have already listened to front to back prior to this exercise. Upon listening to it again, I think enjoyed it about just as much as the first time I heard it in my early teens. This is not necessarily the best Deep Purple record, but it is a very important one in their history. At this point Mark II we’re just getting their feet wet, which lends itself to the raw, raucous, and “live” nature of this recording. Right of the bat, this lineup was already coming out firing with Ian Gillan’s screeching, seeing vocals (and lyrics that sound better than they read), Ritchie Blackmore’s fervent guitar work, Jon Lord’s unmistakable distorted organ with Roger Glover and Ian Paice anchoring down the foundation. Obviously the production sounds very old and British, maybe one of the album’s few weaknesses. Overall, the songs and musicianship are solid and indicative of higher heights to come.

1. Hard-headed woman and a soft-hearted man 2. Baby I'm a mystery but you know I gotta live 3. You'd better close your eyes, bow your head. Wait for the ricochet 4. Speak about the past, times are changing fast 5. Stop your bleeding mind before it's over and done 6. You said you're gonna love me, you said you're gonna set me free 7. Take my hand and keep movin'

The second album in my heavy metal journey and good one at that , the org and electric guitar interplay stands out, the vocals are solid Can’t wait to run to this, just short of that rare perfect tier , a solid 4

Meaty and heavy. There are elements in Deep Purple In Rock that feel like they influenced the development of metal music. Every song has a bit of something to make then all mostly stand out, and they have some creative moments.

Fantastic early heavy/hard/Metal album. They were pretty big when I was young but I never really thgought about how early they were doing it. Most people credit Black Sabbath as the early metal champion but they had a unique sound that wasn't really reproduced in the genre like the sound of this album. Much of Deep Purple's sound could have been made 5- 10 years later. And yet they are clearly transitional with their blues based numbers, their use of keyboards (the sound of which I love) and their occasional progressive wanderings (I bet the guys from Rush were listening closely). Ill be adding Deep Purple to my rotation. 4.4

great heavy metal (or pre-heavy metal idk)

Much harder than I expected. More prog rock than I expected. Granted, only song I feel I’ve heard is Smoke on the Water

Rockin' 4/5

If all you've heard of these guys is "Smoke On The Water" (or even worse, kids that just heard it for the first time playing it wrong/poorly at your local guitar store), I suggest putting that song out of your mind when listening to this. The opening track alone is straight face melting raw rock power! Bloodsucker feels like proto Jack White as he's definitely ripped off that guitar line on a solo track and the arrangement on more than one Raconteurs songs. Child In Time is a 10+ minute roller coaster with prog-y organ and haunting vocals, but really picks up at the 3:20 mark and you're right back to the brutal rock for just under 3 minutes before going back to the chill organ and back up again. The rest of the album is a lot more of the same, just hard hitting rock with thick organ and guitars, kicking drums, and powerful vocals. After this album, I finally get what all the fuss was about with these guys

This was one of the first albums I listened to in my fledgling Rock stage of my youth. Much better than the last one of theirs. Still missing something in the production, but it rocks!

4/4.5 - This was great. Really refreshing. Loved the insane riffs and the track lengths and lengths and lengths... just great stuff. I'll look into these guys more for sure.

This is much more my home territory, the influence of blues and hard rock, juxtaposed against more proggy tones ('child in time') resonates well with the music I already listen to. Specifically the distorted guitar tones, and the gliding organ solos fits my genre of choice. The bass riff on 'into the fire' is heavy AF, the organ slides on 'living wreck' too, and although not technically an original album track, I really like the main riff on Black Night. My only caveat being, and this goes for a whole lot of 70s rock, there's this high pitched vocal scream/shout thing a lot of heavy rock does that i dont really like but other than that.

Some really impressive playing and jamming here. "Child In Time" is one of Deep Purple's best and there are other great tracks here. I have a pretty big gripe with the production though. It is garbage (most of the time). Wish it sounded better because it kind of influenced my star rating here. Deep Purple is still badass though

Wasn't able to give this album the "deep" listen it deserved, but I dug what I heard. Favorite song: Flight of the Rat Least favorite: none - all solid Knew before? No

goes hard🙏

I'd agree with lots of folks who have said this list has too much rock and roll. Glad this one made the list tho. "The music was intended to be loud and heavy, and accurately represent the group's live show." I definitely feel the energy and wish I coulda seen em live. Feels sacrilegious to listen through a laptop 😖😅 ugh I gotta see a heavy metal band in a dive bar SOON

Sick, Deep purple are underrated imo. Lead singer kinda sounds like Mark Hamill sometimes.

A classic early hard rock/heavy metal album. A must listen for any fan of the genre.

That's a great album, I wish it would last longer. It's better than Machine Head. Child in time is their best.

🤘🤘🤘

loved it

That went hard. Deep Purple is not the most inspiring band in the world, but damn do they go hard. Best song: Child In Time

Solid rock album, with mostly songs I didn't know. Liked Songs Added: - Bloodsucker - Child In Time

Good rock riffs

A good rock album all round. 4/5

It's got some of my favourite Deep Purple tracks on it. I'm tempted to knock off a star for the excessive number of Deep Purple albums on this list: how many times must we hear different versions of the same songs in a different order before we die?

I loved how full of energy this album was. I have now heard 10 albums from this website, and even though that isn’t really much of an impressive milestone, I’m glad I got to listen to something this enjoyable for my 10th album. This is my second favourite album out of the 10 I have heard so far (Pet Sounds is my favourite), and I hope to hear more albums like this in the future.

Good but gets drowned out by what came after

Let it be known that all my stars are here for Child in Time.

Deep Purple undergoes metamorphosis, adding heft and depth to their sonic strata, forever setting their sound in stone.

In Rock, by Rock, for Rock.

"dinosaur rock" draws on an outdated stereotype of dinosaurs, whom we now recognise not as the sluggish, clumsy beasts of Edwardian reconstructions, but as nimble and adaptable as any other animal also they pioneered the Hammond organ solo

Some very good shit

Album was such a nice listen. So enjoyable and the 10 minute long song felt so quick because of how good it was. The riffs and solos on this album are among some of my favorites. Overall such a quality album considering it’s one of their first. 8.5/10

Great musicianship, good songwriting. A nice mix of early metal and early prog that doesn't lack soul and remains interesting.

Good solid rock album, not their best IMO but still a good listen

Bro, no one told me they were able to go this hard.

Definitely a good album to listen to if you want to hear the very beginning of metal. Comparing this to the Black Sabbath self-titled album and Paranoid (which I think both came out the same year as this?), I think both the Sabbath records were better. Led Zeppelin III came out in 1970 as well, for what that's worth. One thing that really sticks out about this album to me though is the vocal style - in the 80s there were tons of bands doing the 'metal scream' thing and this is one of the first albums where that's really present like 10 years before it was a standard thing. I think there's also a case to be made for this album being one of the first in the stoner rock genres. One thing I've never liked is the organ in this kind of music. It just always seems so out of place. I guess it was a product of the time and it didn't really last very long but there are so many albums from this time period that have it at the forefront of the mix. But guitars, bass, and drums are super solid on this record. I love the early 70s guitars that just sound like the amps are cranked all the way and the tubes were probably smoking. The sort of characteristic 70s sloppy/loose drum sound. It's all great. I like this album more than Machine Head. I don't really like Smoke on the Water and this whole album is just a little more raw than what you get on Machine Head. And this kind of music just sounds better less polished. Child in Time is my favorite song on this one I think - I do love a 10min+ song with movements and amazing guitar. 4/5

Purple? Probably more like indigo. Definitely not on the violet side of the spectrum. Deep? Eh, maybe. Guess that's really a matter of perspective. Maybe they should have been named Middling Indigo?

++: Speed King, Flight of the Rat, Into the Fire, Living Wreck, Hard Lovin' Man +: Bloodsucker Child in Time 8,5/10

Deep Purple can be a little formulaic: yowling vocals, sick dual-guitar solos, screeching organs... But I mean, if the system works, why change it? I think this album is just long enough, long enough for me to realize how tropic it can be, but not overlong to where I stop enjoying it. Favorite tracks: "Child In Time", "Into The Fire"

Some good fun rock, had a fun time all the way through.

The kings of riffs! I appreciate Deep Purple and all the influence they’ve had on all my favorite bands.

Happy the man, who on a sunny Friday receives ‘in rock’ to his inbox to review. Richie Blackmore reigns supreme here with riffs so hard and heavy you could build train tracks with them. There is something sacred where guitar solos make way for organ solos and then switch back again 🤘🏽 was this the first heavy metal album? I’m not sure but you can draw a straight line between ‘in rock’ and grunge; sound garden and mudhoney in particular. 4/5.

Amazing, consistent guitar and drum work. Emphasis is on massive, uninterrupted instrumental sessions. Personally I remember listening to Child in Time an eternity ago. I didn't remember it was a Deep Purple song, neither did I remember it was on this album. Core memory unlocked. 4.5

Great classic rock. Not entirely to my taste, but nevertheless easy to appreciate.

Another fun, heavy rock album! I much prefer this streak of generated albums compared to what was being dished up last week

Album link to Spotify only had 2 of the songs. Had to find elsewhere
