Reviews (page 5 of 12)

What can I say, I'm a sucker for keyboard solos.

I liked it better than previous album. It’s classic rock, and good classic rock. Last song was great, but it’s also not my cup of tea.

So fun

Quite a time capsule. Hard rock with a late-60s sense of boogie, some prog, and of course wailing vocals and guitars. You can hear the influences and hear the impact upon later artists.

The song 'Child in Time' alone makes the album a classic.

Funkier and way better than I expected it to be.

I gave too many dad rock albums 3s this one should get a 4. It was a fun listen

Very good. Like very much.

This was my first time listening to this album, and I loved it. One thing I really enjoy about Deep Purple is that as they evolved into a heavier band, they continued to use the organ prominently. The organ holds just as much dominance as the guitars, which is a very defining characteristic of Deep Purple’s sound. It adds a unique depth and richness to their music that sets them apart from other heavy bands.

If you ask me, Deep Purple perfected hard rock. Simple, straightforward riffs that kick ass and the band simply plays to that strength. Then they do some slow stuff on Child in Time in order to build to a rockin' swing solo that blows the last two songs out of the water. Then side B flies in and it's mental, just absolute hard rock pinnacle. This is primarily aided by Jon Lord's incredible organ contributions, thought the real MVP is Ritchie Blackmore's insane solos.

Having only listened to machine head before, this one came as a bit of a pleasant surprise, didn’t realise how much Deep Purple influenced metal at this stage. Great album deserves to be on the list.

Machine Head is probably a little better but this is still a nice heavy slab of rock with a big helping of B-3 thrown in for good measure. Still Mk II, so it’s going to be amazing.

A good, complete album, even if "Child in Time" went on for a bit too long. I would not have listened to this if this website had not suggested it to me, bit I am glad I did.

Classic sound

Never given these guys a deeper dive than the famous singles. Cool stuff. Metal thanks thee

iiich han ihm defintiv glost als chindul. speed king haut mi etz nöd um. scho epic #awesomesauce. bloodsucker seehr cooli soli. child in time isch sooooo geil hani scho eeeeig nüme glost. aber kenn immerno jedes detail. lieeeebs fuuuuuck isch da guet. flug der ratte isch recht geil well de sänger mol chli dörf und s tribt super füre. jon lord chan öppis.

BROOOOOOOOOO ALLES GLÖSCHT WETSCHMI ZIEH ICH HANS USVERSEHE ZUEGMACHT ja also child in time isch es insanes lied und han huere freud hani das "wiederentdeckt" mengisch gfalltmer de ian gillan mega, mengisch singt er chli undütlich? eifach chlii komisch geg de schluss hendsmer chli too much synthis oder was au immer brucht wo rifach chli lärmt, s het defür chli de charme vode ziit aber ja gegenüber child in time fallt halt alles chli ab, wills so unglaublich guet und episch isch, aber au de rest sehr solid

A three-star rock record, with one star added for a meaningful reason: some things are more Spinal Tap than Spinal Tap, and that has value in music. Being a band of English guys representing yourselves as Mount Rushmore is funny. There being five guys in the band instead of four, and doing it anyway, is worth a whole extra star.

I was blown away by this

Classic Purple line up produces some classic Purple material.

People With A Time Machine: I’m going to go meet my ancestors Me with a Time Machine: Give me a pound of grass and take me to a Deep Purple concert

ive avoided hard rock for the longest time and i blame the influence acdc had on me. any time i saw the genre tag i would be put off on listening to the album. however, over time, ive warmed up to it, and realized that it can go fucking nuts after listening to the stooges fun house and raw power. anyway, this album also goes pretty crazy. its a shame that there isnt a full remaster of the album, but the energy still remains. i do think side b is weaker compared to a, but its still very good. i cant believe i didnt listen to these because of dummy poopoo acdc (no offense). 4 personal favs: speed king, child in time, flight of the rat, hard lovin man

A stellar psychedelic rock album. Maybe not my favorite Deep Purple album, but it’s really good. “Hard Lovin’ Man” is probably my favorite track, but there’s not a weak song on here.

Child in Time is a masterpiece and even at 10 minutes, it never feels too long. Speed King and Living Wreck are great songs, displaying the band’s knack for writing rocking riffs. The musicianship os great throughout the album, with both Blackmore, Lord and Glover given moments to shine. True, some of the songs are quite lengthy (Flight of the Rat) and Ian Gillans’s screeches are an aqcuired taste. Also, while riffing hard, Bloodsucker and Hard Loving Man aren’t the greatest songs ever written. Still, the highlights here are strong enough to warrant a weak four stars. If we consider Black Night a part of the album, the four stars are unquestionable

Hadn't heard too much from this band before, but this album has some pretty rocking songs.

Deep….

Better than I expected!

Great opener with speed king. Includes the classic "child in time". what a tune, the whole thing is like a stage play. The guitar solo is excellent. the vocals. I love how the song transitions through at different speeds. Slow build ups, fast drum beats, great guitar, that organ. Up and down she goes. Not many songs can pull off 10 minutes but this bad boy can. Shuv it up ya! Theres an incredibly amount of pace to flight of the rat. It makes you take note and listen. The use of the wah. Then that drum solo at the end. Cracking. The whole pace and quality of the musicians is excellent throughout the album. For a first listen i very much enjoyed it. I'll be coming back for another listen.

i would say in general, deep purple tends to be music i don't really care about - i first encountered 'machine head' in this project and wasn't wowed by it. it just really isn't my music. so going into this one, i was sort of expecting more of the same, but i think ultimately, i like this one better. to me it's got more of a raw rock energy that machine head doesn't. it feels a little more rough around the edges, which i like. to me, it sounds like if you put the doors on steroids. just very frenetic, and i appreciated it more than what feels like the more premeditated 'machine head'

My first thought was, 'great…another Deep Purple album'. Then I listened to this masterpiece of early hard rock and got so into it. 4/5

8/10. Some really good stuff throughout but super inconsistent for me. Even in individual songs, I found myself loving pieces and disliking other pieces. Still, put Speed King, Child in Time and Flight of the Rat all on the 5 star list. Lots of fun, creative stuff throughout.

in rock haha get it xDD

Not m'y favorite of DP mais still an Amazing album !

Good record by Deep Purple, anticipating reviewing Machinehead.

I know this was a birthing point for heavy metal hit Inwas never a big Deep Purple fan.

It changed my concept of the band, very Guns N' Roses-like.

Oh well I'm surprised. This is good!

I love Deep Purple - from distortion jams to hard driving beats.

- Was eine geile Platte. 4,25/5

Amazing

Bueeno

Stunningly good. The musicianship is great and it weighs a tonne. Noice

Killer album

Classic Rock Album!

One of my all time favourites

Cool, not my favorite.

The production dates itself. Not necessarily my kind of heavy music at this point but worth listening to for the historical value for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this entire album. It pairs well with preworkout and heavy circles. 8/10 Would I listen again? Yes

It doesn’t have Zeppelin’s brilliance or Sabbath’s dark wit, and many others have far surpassed it in terms of pain & power. However, it was there at the beginning, and it still blisters.

Iconic!

I'm into it! Particularly hearing Jesus in his natural rock band setting. This would go 3.5 for me, so I'm going 4 due to the technical ridiculousness of these songs. Loved the Rat one. Apparently this is a change of direction for the band after hearing Zeppelin and I actually like it better.

I' wa' coo.

Another fun album, didn’t know any of the songs but was a cool transitional mesh of psychedelic and hard rock. 3.5/5

Given this is a time/genre I love, I really haven’t listened to much Deep Purple. Halfway through the first listen it was obvious why, the prog stuff was pretty annoying and overbearing. However, the last songs Hard Lovin Man and Black Night had me rocking and drawn back in. 3 more listens later and I’m now hearing more the driving heavy rock, some OTT lunatic but great vocals and less of the silly prog bits. Fair to say it’s a grower and I’m won over. Will be listening to more of their stuff now…

Never listened before and the riffs had me straight away but the boys disliked the screaming. For the air guitaring opportunities alone it's a solid 3/low 4.

Good music, knew of them, but hadn’t really heard them.

Very good, great band!

Classic Deep Purple. Fast drums, complicated keys and power chords.

Hey this was pretty sweet!

A solid album (no pun intended) by one of the greats. Simple as that.

Pretty good album. I particularly enjoyed the weird noises on Child in Time.

Good tracks!

On the bluesier end of metal. After being disapointed with other Deep Purple albums on this list this one actually delivered. While most of my absolute favourite Deep Purple songs are not on here (except "Child In Time") it really holds a high standard. "Child in Time" is one of my favourite tracks by Deep Purple, but there are a lot of other great tracks such as "Flight of the Rat" and "Speed King". The solos are really something special (and I'm not usually a fan of long solos) and the vocals are amazing. How "Ian Gilligan" manages that amount of control and energy I will never know. This strikes close to a 5 but I'm going to have to settle on a very strong 4.

Two songs in, and what an absolute delight of an album. The first 90 seconds sounded like a mic check, so I was a bit worried, but what followed was an unabashed hard rock album. It's not going to change the world, it didn't define a genre, but goddammit is it fun!. Bloodsucker is a fantastic mix of guitar shreds, offbeat rhythms, high pitched shrieks, and even a splash of 70s rock organ thrown in. What a treat! The album only has 7 tracks spanning 44 minutes. The third track, Child in Time, is a loose jam that I'm sure was dynamite to hear in concert. the rest of the album is very good, not great, with a bit too much of the 70s rock organ for my taste. All in all a terrific album that is an absolute grandfather to modern heavy metal AND progressive metal. 4 stars

don’t really have pre listening notes bc idk anything about this band. i also need to speed through this bc it’s Cowboy Carter day Speed King - I do love rock. i like motley crue and aerosmith and stuff so this is scratching the itch Bloodsucker - i think i said this while listening to led zeppelin but i do love a song about a man who loves to love but is a rovin man. classic. the musical screaming is nice. Child in Time - i could immediately tell this is an anti war song and considering the time of the album, that makes sense. it’s very powerful. and technical. the notes the singer hits! the guitar in this song!! chefs kiss!! Flight of the Rat - goodbye rat 👋 i like the wobbly nature of this song. they’re long songs but they can take their time bc i don’t feel like mine is being wasted. i’m jammin. okay drum solo!!! Into the Fire - the main riff of this song sounds familiar to me. not particularly a standout on this album but still a good song. i caught myself nodding my head along. i do like how they end their songs Living Wreck - not my fav song tbh, maybe my least fav on the album. it’s not bad, still a bop. but i don’t care for the lyrics Hard Lovin’ Man - i had fun listening to this one but not much to say! i liked the gong halfway through. not their strongest song, but staying true to the rest of the album, the end of this song really sums up the album and i can appreciate that. overall i’m glad to have been introduced to this band! they’re good rockers. 4/5

Solid album! I only know a song or two by Deep Purple, but this album was a great dive into the real meat of their repertoire. Ian Gillan is probably the quintessential rock vocalist, and I loved the mix of rock, early heavy metal, prog, and psychedelic.

Album 358 of 1001 Deep Purple - Deep Purple In Rock Rating : 4 / 5 While no song really stood out from the others, the album was rocking from beginning to end. Though I've never listed anything from Deep Purple on my list when asked who my favorites are, I've also never heard anything from them that I didn't like, at least a bit. Great album.

Damn, this sounds so full for a hard rock album of its time. Heavy when it needs to be, beautiful when a little respite is needed. I only knew "Child in Time" going in (a track that is absolutely epic) and the rest of the album lives up to that track's reputation. The musicianship here is fantastic. While I don't feel confident enough to bestow 5 stars on this album, I'll say it did make me much more curious to explore the rest of Deep Purple's output.

i can see how this was influential but it isnt that great to me. into the fire is my favorite track and living wreck was good too. 7/10

Man, I freakin love to ROCK

Super cool but something I can’t get like that

I was not expecting to like this album at all, however I really did. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar was exceptional and I loved the variety going from crazy guitar licks to organ (??!! I mean what hard rock band uses an organ?). I really liked it, it added some nice spice and uniqueness to their sound. Yes, they had some long songs, but they sounded really good and weren't monotonous in their sound (mainly because of the organ and guitar licks). Overall very solid and a nice surprise.

A proto metal band. Perhaps influencing trash more than Sabbath would. Progish at times but thick crunchy sounds and well put together. A surprising listen as I've never been one for Deep Purple.

Very influential hard rock/proto metal album, imagine how new it must have sounded back in 1970! It almost sounds like proto trash metal. Though, to me some solos were a bit too long, and the singing wasn't my fav either. Still, a very good album overall.

It is deep purple! I love it!!!

This record rips. Child in Time is one of the most epic classic rock songs ever recorded and should be as famous as some of the other massively popular prog-leaning ballads like Stairway and BoRap. This album surprised me on some of the other tracks with just how heavy it all is for the time. Very cool very fun must listen.

A pioneer of early heavy metal and very influential in the genre. I keep wanting to dismiss Deep Purple but I'm always pleasantly surprised by how good they are.

Deep Purple: the band Spinal Tap aspired to be.

The only reference to deep purple that I have is smoke on the water. And this album is nothing like smoke on the water, so that’s cool.

Nice, wel beter dan machine head eigenlijk

Sick guitar, sick riffs very influential

I enjoyed this more than I expected because of my limited understanding of Deep Purple's scope. I love this type of glam metal vocals, pumping guitars.

Undeniably badd ass, but then the singer starts vocaling and it becomes just plain ass. This just needed refinement. Was super-happy to find this for the riffs and bass-y guitar, but wish they'd found another singer.

01) Speed King - 7,5 02) Bloodsucker - 7,0 03) Child In Time - 10,0 04) Flight of the Rat - 8,0 05) Into the Fire - 7,5 06) Living Wreck - 7,0 07) Hard Lovin' Man - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,64 (76/100) "Child In Time" is by far my favorite song on the album. The rest is, I guess, good enough to (just barely) ensure 4 stars. "Black Night" is not on original album, but let's say it would contribute to the higher mark of the album. Well, it seems that I prefer Led Zeppelin.

Seminal hard rock album. I can't deny how influential this album and this band is, but listening to it in 2024 just makes me wish I was listening to Motorhead or Iron Maiden.

Pretty kick-ass album. I haven't heard a Deep Purple song outside of Smoke on the Water and this album made me like them so much more. The guitar solos, the melodies, the vocals. I loved jamming to this one. Speed King, Bloodsucker, and Flight of the Rat were my favorites.

Digging the opening track! From the intro to the freak out around 4 minutes. Bloodsucker also a good stoney rock jam! Child In Time also really good! I dig it!

Decent great sounds energy but could have more hooks

Heavy and fun

Would have had 5 but the 1st track was on their live album. Live is cheating.

Straight rock and roll. Awesome guitar solos with a driving beat all the way through. In contrast to Rod Stewart playing someone else's music using someone else's band these guys are going their own way, doing their own thing. It feels like a sea change from the 60s to modern music. I feel like these guys hadn't quite found their groove yet. I think this record is them just showing off their amazing technical skills.

I'm not working in my garage today or painting any rooms so this is hitting me funny. It's obviously brilliant. As good as analog recording gets and transferred beautifully to high res digital. Can hear the groundwork for so much that was to come after. Noted that this came out same year as Black Sabbath Paranoid. The roots of heavy metal on both accounts. I imagine Deep Purple were in terms of phenomenal live performances. Favorite Deep Purple tracks (not in this album): Hush, Smoke On the Water. Recent connect point: Smoke On the Water placed perfectly in an episode of the Sopranos.

Deep Purple is natuurlijk de rocknaam bij uitstek. Goede plaat!

Damn. Just makes me want to get in my car and break several local ordinances. Blackmore is riffs to the max. And Gillan set the vocal stylings for so many that followed -- especially Dio (which makes sense cuz Rainbow). I'd give it five stars, but that damn organ sets my teeth on edge every other song.

Deep Purple - In Rock Fourth album by Deep Purple The group went through a line up change between their last album and this one. With the drama behind the scenes being like an episode of Real housewives. After meetings with possible new members and the original members finding out they were being fired while finishing the tour for the last album. This album was much harder than their last 4 and all songs were original songs (unlike the past albums). This was their first big hit in their native UK. For me it is a good representation of Rock albums from the 70s. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Lots of great musical interludes and solos, things we don't get in a lot of modern rock songs. 4/5

I was surprised by this album. Great listen all the way through. High energy with guitar playing rivaling Hendrix. Keyboard was a nice surprising touch. All the songs on this album hit hard. Couldn’t think of any skips. They definitely set themselves apart from other hard rock bands at the time. 3.84

Solid album. Like the heavy blues rock sound.

Never paid much attention to Deep Purple, that was a mistake. This album is the heaviest psychedelic rock imaginable and it’s awesome.

Rating: 8.5/10 Great album from start to finish. The songwriting was very strong throughout, there were many progressive elements that made this unpredictable and therefore very interesting to listen to. All of the members were fantastic, the guitar and keyboard shined on the instrumental passages and the riffs were great, the singer sang with a lot of energy, and the drummer had his moments to showcase his skills, most notably on Flight of the Rat. This album was also clearly influential with the creation of heavy metal, many blues-inspired distorted riffs which were prominent in early heavy metal. I wish some of the transitions were better between some sections but overall this was very enjoyable. Favorite songs: Bloodsucker, Child in Time, Flight of the Rat, Into the Fire, Hard Lovin' Man. Least favorite song: Speed King.

this probably one of the best hard rock albums i've ever heard. i'm definitely gonna have to listen to it more. i also like how in some songs it just descends into pure noise chaos. that's a good playlist name :) I love the use of the rock organ as well. i was never really a big fan of deep purple but now i have to listen to them more often. the guitar solos and riffs in this album are insane. also i'm not sure why, but i could only find like- 2 songs off the album on spotify so i had to listen on youtube but i'll figure that out later. great album.

fue interesante

Rock my youth

Awesome, awesome. Each band member is so skilled and their sound so powerful and groovy. Enjoyed far more than anticipated. Riff kings!

Importante para confirmar a potência do heavy metal clássico, mesmo sem as minhas músicas preferidas.

It's undoubtedly a classic. Still a bid conservative, mind.

Not as great as their other albums, but Child in Time is an ultimate classic! Standouts: Child in Time 4/5

Deep Purple is an interesting beast. With 4 distinct configurations over their initial run, designated Mark I, Mark II, Mark III and Mark IV. Over those 4 configurations they released 10 studio albums in 8 years, plus 3 live albums. I've often thought their constant changes really held them back from even bigger success than they had. Smoke On The Water is one of the best known songs in rock, and Machine Head is a brilliant album. The double live Made In Japan is universally considered among the top live albums ever. All of which were the Mark II band. In Rock is the configuration that broke the band into the stratosphere, and defined the sound that they would be instantly recognizable. This album rocks with Ritchie Blackmore's guitar, and Jon Lord's organ, which are 2 of the really defining keys to Deep Purple's sound. The album starts hard with Speed Kind and really doesn't let up. Really solid 70's hard rock, one of the bands that kicked off the entire heavy metal genre. All of the Mark II albums are very good, but only Machine Head is essential. Well, Machine Head and Made In Japan. And In Rock isn't far behind those benchmarks. Aside: This album is not available on Spotify, only 2 songs. And I only owned 2 songs (via an anthology collection). But it is on Youtube, which worked fine. Solid 4/5

High energy and fun. Songs go on a bit long and circus-y feeling at times.

\m/ Excellent hard rock album. I was okay with the first half, and then the 2nd half picked up, and then the closer crushed it.

fun album…. i’m enjoying into the fire and living wreck we’re favorited but all the others had amazing solos….

Palatable heavy metal.

Speed King - this has a lot of the usual hard rock features that you would find in bands like Aerosmith. But this also has a lot of punk/hip hop rhythms in here, which I like. It is very funky. Bloodsucker - this sounds a lot like Aladdin Sane/Ziggy Stardust style of music. If it were a little harder, and less glam. But it has the same jazzish rhythms and singing style. I feel like I have heard these riffs in those songs. Child in Time - this is a cool sounding song. It almost has a Led Zeppelin vibe. The riff is really cool, once again it sounds like David Bowie a lot, but this time it sounds a lot like something from The Width of a Circle. This one does the same thing that Blood, Sweat, and Tears did where they would have to short lyrical sections, but then they fill in the rest of the time with (in this case) rock jams. I think that is really cool, I think what is missing from music nowadays is that there is very little focus on the instruments, and too much attention on the vocals. The music has to be good too. I am not listening too close to the lyrics but they sound like they might be interesting. Flight of the rat - this is also a fun vibe, they are really good at making solid jams. This also sounds like David Bowie, his albumPin Ups. Really cool drum solo at the end. It has that oozing rhythm that I love, another song with it is the opening of Believe Me Natalie by the killers. Into the Fire - I really like the fuzz in this song. Has a similar vibe as I Am Iron Man. Singing style is from a Beetles song, I am A Walrus. It also has a very familiar riff, I can remember the song it’s from, but it is very recognizable. Overall it is a jamming tune. Living Wreck - despite the title this song is cleeen. Very smooth jam. Hard Lovin’ Man - the intricacies of the jam section is incredible. They are clearly very good at playing/making the music end of the song. In the middle there is this cool discordant section where all of the notes are at odd intervals that if not used correctly would sound horrible, but they make it sound good, and cool to Listen to. This album is a very high 4

Psychedelic hard rock. Solid vocals, would have loved this as a teen.

Really enjoyed the album. Did not know much about this band other than Smoke on the Water but they have some great songwriting and tones. Never would’ve guessed but 4/5.

Much like the others, probably not something I would've listened to on my own... before this, I'm not sure I knew them outside of Smoke on the Water, but doesn't everyone know that song? I think the best part of this experience is hearing artists I really enjoy's influences. There were so many parts of this album that I felt were direct influences on Lenny Kravitz. This is definitely an album to get stoned to and just relax.

I liked this more and more the more I listened to it.

I actually liked it! I’ve been feeling rock lately and might give them a genuine listen!

Deep. Purple.

- fuuuck the lead guitar tones man. deadly. - a little corny, but still great. the super high bridge from glen hughes in sweet child in time is wild. Overall a cool classic rock album - makes me appreciate DP more (lol)

Starting off with some really loud noises, but I can take it. It continues slow, then obviously takes off hard, I love the energy tbh, I would bang my head around with this. And the sounds are different in ears so that's a plus. From my dad's listening knew this would have a lot of instrumentals. Ohh it's progressive too, getting louder with the drums. First song is sooo good, even though I don't listen to that genre much. So many references in the lyrics but no deep meaning(I think) Second song is also about a longing to make love to a woman. Same energy, the screaming is low key fun. Wow lyrics are already finished, also it says there is a black Sabbath like instrumentals(fun). Apparently this song is about a "bloodsucker" who lies to woman in a way, and they catch up to his antics that's why he screams no a lot. 10 fucking minutes, but it's one of their best song, which is against Vietnam war, and progressive af. I love the instrumentals at the start and then slowly becoming intense. THE VOCALSS, GOTTA LOVE THEM, giving pink Floyd. Little classical parts make it so better. Also it expresses the chaos of that war. THE ORGAN, chefs kiss. Perfect ending, chaotic. 3rd song is about a tyrant leaving, which causes people's happiness. Otherwise there is a great solo, and a show off drums at the end. Amaaazing middle instrumentals, can't wait for the drums. Definitely a show off, my ears loved those drums. 5th song is about not using drugs because they ruin lives. And there is a guitar solo I already love. My ears do hurt a little. Quite a short one, and not as special as the other songs. 6th song is a about a woman who is soo untidy and weird that the witnesser of her almost died of shock apparently, then suggests to change her way of live. Nothing special for now, but I await the organ. I love how each song is about different things and not revolve about one subject like the last two albums. Ooo absolutely devoured with that organ. Last songg, obviously a long one, expected tbh. Weird and satisfying organ play here already. Starts with a solo. I think this song is about how he's having sex and that he likes it rough(might be totaaaly wrong, but lyrics mean that to me). There was a 112 like sound, eccentric. Nothing remarkable yet. Oh the sound fully stopped and there is some weird guitar sound getting louder for a second in one ear. Also I think there is a fight between Sabbath and purple fans, not that deep into being their fan, but not surprised drama exists.

I have to get this out of the way. The cover of this album is not good. The font that reads "Deep Purple in Rock" looks like something from Windows 95 and putting them on Mount Rushmore, especially considering they are an English band, is a little bit weird. I know it was 1970 and font type was more limited, yet I will provide no quarter. "Living Wreck" gave me "Smoke on the Water" vibes. I don't know what it was, but I got the vibe through the whole song. Ian Gillian does a lot of screaming on this album, which I don't recall him doing on "Machine Head," but perhaps I am misremembering. I don't know if I consider Deep Purple to be a heavy metal band straightaway. They are really more of a hard rock jam band and these songs are mostly pretty good. I don't think this is their best album and a lot of the songs have lyrics and then long interludes or outros, which are fun to listen to but seem a bit formulaic after multiple listenings. The first half of the album is stronger than the last half of the album with "Flight of the Rat" and "Into the Fire" being a bit of a drag in the middle of the album. Overall, this is an important album and if there are two Deep Purple albums in this book then I have no issue with this being one, because it rocks. This isn't as good as "Machine Head" though.

One of the foundations stones of Heavy Metal. Great to hear it in its entirety for the first time.

Immense!

fave track: bloodsucker final thoughts: i have a loaded history w ritchie blackmore bc of gcse music but i am willing to look past it

8/10 the drums on this album are nothing short of phenomenal! the different rhythms provided by the drummer were so engaging, they deserve a raise fr. the organ too, it’s usage adds a certain type of weirdness, along with the gritty guitar riffs accompanying it. they all come together to create an enjoyable listen where you can see hard rock developing into early metal music! sometimes the lyrics were weird but then you remember it’s the 70s and everyone was coked out their minds so it’s to be expected. however i loved the anti war message on child of time, some lovely writing on that song!!

Very good, will definitely listen again

Really enjoyed this.

3,5-4/5

Classic. As good as the first time.

Hard rock de los Deep Purple. Un 4.

Solid rock album. Haven't really listened to Deep Purple before, other than Smoke on the Water. Will have to put them on more often.

Strong rock album. Heavily influential and great jams.

I need to get into Deep Purple more because every time I hear something new (to me) from them, it always blows me away yet I've barely listened to that many full albums by them. Speed King feels like a prequel to Highway Star (as I learned while listening to this, Machine Head wasn't until a few years later). The bluesiness Deep Purple implements into all their work is very prevalent here, along with funky fast-paced keyboard sounds like those heard in Bloodsucker and more delicate ones in Child In Time. All wrapped up in the neat, explosive bow that is Hard Lovin' Man. A banger for the ages.

4/5 Epic.

Sounds like 1970 and that’s great. Spare production. A band reaching its peak. Some classic tracks laid down. Nice.

High energy and great solos throughout. Perfect music to play as loud as you can...it really rocks. I find myself listening to Machine Head more but this album is just as great!

Pionniers du hard rock. Ça rock au poste, c'est très entraînant, bonne guit. 4 pour la surprise, je ne m'attendais vraiment pas à des sosn cool de même.

An intersection between psychedelic rock, hard rock, and metal. Definitely a pioneering album for its time, and a friggin' awesome-sounding one at that. The only complaint I have is the slightly excessive screaming, but that's purely based on personal taste. The bass playing is reminiscent of the late-60s-early-70s burly psychedelic bass sound, and the guitars complement it beautifully.

Not as bombastic and technical as Zeppelin, not as dirty and dreary as sabbath. There's a charm to early heavy metal that I personally adore. 8/10.

Child in time and speed king are the shit, nice album overall, but some tracks a bit too instrumental, like flight of the rat. Will definitely listen to again tho

It’s seminal, obviously and a 4 from me

I think people really only know deep people for their song smoke on the water. I wasn't really familiar with any of the other work. I'm pretty sure I've heard Child in time before. It's really good solid rock album. I really enjoyed it. Might give this another listen in the near future

Enjoyable and groovy if perhaps a little shorter than I expected it to be. I didn’t catch any riffs that felt like ear worms, so no tracks stood out as favorites but could be due to me working out while listening. 7-8/10, would listen again.

Some classic rock, faves are child in time and flight of the rat

Another solid rock/metal album.

This was pretty fun and exciting.

One of the classic bands, still going strong today. This record is another important one, dynamic songs, dizzying musicianship, strong themes. Yeah, this band is great! 8,5 out of 10

Greta songs but the album US full of alternative versione and 'studio chats' Speed king and child in time are incredibile songs

Only two song’s available on spotify

Удивительно живое музло

обосную в выпуске почему альбом крут но выше крепкой 4+ поставить не могу (но могу понять легко и 5)

# Deep Purple, Deep Purple in Rock Released 1970 4.5* I haven't heard any of these songs before...more's the pity. ## 1. "Speed King" 5:54 4* This song rocks! Love the guitar and drums. Loud and heavy, psychadelic distortion. Love the levels and dynamism of fading out and coming back HARD!!! ## 2. "Bloodsucker" 4:16 4* Another amazing song! The vocals and guitar and drums and bass and keyboard, oh my!!! Why have I never heard this song before?! ## 3. "Child in Time" 10:20 3* Starts off slow. Long jam with some fun dynamics. Not my favorite on the album though. ## 4. "Flight of the Rat" 7:57 3* Fun jam, great guitars and drums, but not as good as the first 2 songs. ## 5. "Into the Fire" 3:30 4* Fun jam again. Great sound. ## 6. "Living Wreck" 4:34 4* That drum intro! ## 7. "Hard Lovin' Man" 7:11 4* Hard rocking driving.

Great head banging classic rock. Interlaced with some interesting screams, cries, and keys, but the guitar progressions are exceptional and the culmination of some very powerful rock. The vocals tend to be drowned out by the action, but the music is led by its exquisite power chords and grinding guitar shreds. YeaaaaahhhhHHHHH!

Already love Deep Purple, so when I got this album, I knew I was in for a treat! Definitely not as enjoyable as their hit album "Machine Head", but still a phenomenal Hard Rock album. Great choice opening with "Speed King" and ending with an interesting onslaught of sounds on "Hard Lovin' Man", I specifically enjoy the key in the 2:17-3:05 section. There was some tracks I didn't feel a strong love for, but I don't think I could ever consider them awful, just less of my taste compared to the rest of what this album has to offer! Thank you for the great music Deep Purple!

Child In Time blew my 14-year-old mind. This album is what got me into heavy rock. Still love it.

Good album from deep purple. Would recommend if you like classic 70s rock.

Magnificently hard, driving. The Who wish they rocked this well. Anticipates AC/DC but far less juvenile. Gets the hard rock screech right without Daltry’s peacock ego or Plant’s tiresome overuse. Love this.

Bloodsucker

deep purple whoa Speed king could use more cocaine

Great album, Child in Time is 10/10

Proto-metal at its finest. Every song feels like it is pushing the limits of the players’ abilities. Despite the length of the songs, they still all manage to have a hook or riff to latch on to to keep the songs consistent within themselves.

Rock On!

Perfect duration for an album. Not too long. Guitar riffs were solid.

I knew this album before. I actually owned it growing up. I used to like this kind of music, but not really anymore. Still, was great to revisit, it does have some legendary tracks on it.

This was surprisingly a banger album, never heard of deep purple until this recommendation

I didn't expect this to be as prog as this. I normally associate Deep Purple with Smoke on the Water and that's about it, but this showed me that I was dismissing this band because of one over played song. As soon as Speed King started, I was taken back and I really wish more of the album was at that tempo, it was such a great song. Standouts: Speed King, Child in Time

Mostly likeable Hard Rock, too mich screeching for me.

I definitely want to give this some more listens as the influence on heavy rock music is very apparent. On my first listen, this was very cool.

The most blues-y out of the classic hard rock bands. The longer songs don't get boring. The keyboard in Deep Purple's album adds another layer to rock music that I often miss in other hard rock music.

It was fine, nothing that really caught my eye

A monument in Rock music

It was aggressively of its time, and can see how it influences newer bands

What an opener. And with child in time deep purple delivered one of their masterpieces. Great Hard Rock record.

Child in Time is awful. The rest is great. Basically a tighter, better version of Led Zeppelin with an organ. Favorite song: speed king

They were cooking with this one fr

Very Classic. Awesome. Wouldn’t have found this without the list!

I always appreciate good use of stereo when I'm wearing headphones!

Cool record. I was familiar with "Machine Head" -- own a copy -- but hadn't heard this. I like heavier stuff and had never thought of Deep Purple as being all that heavy... Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, that sort of thing is "heavy" in my book... well, this record is pretty heavy! It's got a sludgy feel to it, they were definitely successful in capturing the spirit of rawk. I like the keyboards particularly, they add a lot of depth to the tunes.

"Child in Time" alone makes this album an incredible journey. Every song in this album is great - guitar effects, cool progressions with a very raw, visceral sound to it.

Was fun, although not able to listen to all the songs

These are maybe the fathers of hard rock. This album goes really hard when compared with their last few releases before this. Drums are on point with some great audio mixing. Great technical talent here.

An album from over 50 years ago that still sounds fresh and exciting! I hadn't heard any Deep Purple aside from Smoke on the Water, so I wasn't expecting much. You can definitely see how they influenced Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Just a lot of fun. Child in Time is the standout track for sure.

It's a good almbum albeit all over the shop. Can be hard to listen but it has great songs within.

Damn. I've always liked what I heard of Deep Purple but never took the plunge and dove in — and listening to this album, that's too bad. These guys are bad ass. Every musical element is excellent on its own — and that certainly includes the vocal — but each drives the others to a powerful crescendo that is gloriously over-the-top. The wah break in "Flight of the Rat" is where I just gave in and shook my head in wonder. I'd have to explore the lyrics — they did seem to wander into questionable territory at times — but I was less taken by the words as much as I am the power and range of Ian Gillan. I'm ready to tear a tree out by the roots. I'm fired up!

Don’t mind it

Took me a few listens to get into this, but Deep Purple rocks. Someday I'm going to go back and listen to what they're actually singing about, but this felt sufficiently modern despite being from the 70's. Didn't love sitting through a 10 minute jam...I'm not high and I hate Phish, but I appreciated it for what it was. Unless the song is November Rain, i don't have the...Patience...(another good 10 minute song)...for super long songs. (Except, also, All To Well 10-minute version, GIVE TAYLOR BACK THE RED SCARF!)

I give this 5 stars for Child In Time alone. Richie’s solo is a face shredding masterpiece. This was the first album by the MKII line-up. Gillan and Glover contributed to the new heavier direction the former band members had decided to go with. It’s a relentless album, the riffs keep coming and Gillan delivers a vicious and powerful vocal. Music was changing so fast in the late sixties and early seventies. I envy the music fans of the day. Can you imagine buying this, going home dropping the needle and hearing Speed King, inspired.

Pretty good

overall rating: 7/10 favourite song: bloodsucker ( 8/10 ) runner up favourite: child in time ( 8/10 ) least favourite: all of studio chats album cover: 6.5/10 vocals: 6/10 instrumentals: 9/10 would i recommend ? : sure , i’ll tell my dad about it tonight other: i’ve never listened to deep purple before. sounds like your average 70s rock which i love. the vocals are a bit quiet. i don’t like when albums have remixes on them or whatever the studio chats are called. overall its really good and ill listen again.

Звук грязный. Сначала, когда я слушал, мне не зашло, но потом раскурил. Black night зашла, у некоторых других песен мотивы интересные.

Great stuff. Definitely influential, and a lot of fun. Its almost metal lol

Unfortunately I couldn't listen to it all on Spotify, but I already know and enjoy the album, so it's a solid four stars from me - a bit too prog in places to be perfect.

This album was a solid hard rock/heavy metal record. Rickie Blackmore’s riffs are some of the best and they absolutely define Deep Purple’s sound. This album sits perfectly at the transition from psychedelic to hard rock/proto metal. The most impressive thing about this album is that I can hear in it the roots of hardcore and thrash. Additionally, the galloping beat featured on the closing track would later define Iron Maiden’s sound. I wish Deep Purple was as acknowledged as Black Sabbath and progenitors of heavy metal

Usually I can't get into a lot of the classic rock bands, say like Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin etc. There just isn't anything exciting about their music to me, and when they seem to 'jam' it feels safe, like they're afraid to go all out. With Deep Purple, I don't get that feeling at all. Every song I hear from them is just balls to the wall, trying to outdo each other for the entire song, being technical and musical in equal measure. The longer songs like Child in Time on here are just so much fun to listen to, 10 minutes has passed you by before you even realise. For me they blow a lot of those classic rock bands out of the water.

Really great classic rock with a slight proggy vibe to it

Very good, some very catchy songs and overall upbeat atmosphere

Not my favourite DP album but still a banger. Like it's not their best work... *Child In Time starts* AAAAAaaaahhh!! OOOooohhh!!

Hard Rock 🤟

I thought this was really ahead of it’s time.

first listen great and consistent hard rock

I didn’t mind the early incarnation of Deep Purple - the one that had a double sided hit in Australia in 1968 with a Neil Diamond song (Kentucky Woman) & a Joe South song (Hush). But they were a much more exciting band once Ian Gillan took over as lead singer the following year. I first heard him on the single Black Night (not on this album, although Speed King was the b-side. But before I found a second-hand copy of In Rock, I heard him perform the title role on the original studio album of Jesus Christ Superstar, which I bought when it was released in late 1970. That involved some of the greatest rock screaming I’d ever heard that side of Robert Plant. So I was totally ready to see Deep Purple when they played Randwick Racecourse one sunny Sunday afternoon in May 1971. They headlined, supported by local Santana- wannabe's, Piranha, the Manfred Mann Earthband (more prog than pop) and the amazing Free. I can tell you tickets were $3.00, but if you presented a coupon (cut from that day’s Sunday Mirror) at the gates, you got in for $2.50. Needless to say the best value gig I ever attended. Purple were fantastic & Blackmore & Gillan at the peak of their powers. I had not played this album for a long time, but I have to say it is a great record, and the band’s best. Side 1 is particularly good, from the Little Richard tributes in Speed King to the contrasting slowness of Child In Time. And Side 2 almost as good - I did not remember any of those titles but as soon as I started listening, I remembered the music completely. And it’s gonna get a good flogging this weekend.

Deep Purple are always great.

Love it

-okay this is already WAY different from my other albums this week -this is way more my style!!!!! -when it all settles and the guitar comes in is so nice -favorites: bloodsucker -the guitar riff for this one is my FAV! (bloodsucker) -i LOVE some good screaming -i love when i find a band i’ve never heard of and hear some cool ass rock songs

Sweet child into the fire. It’s very good but I expected a little bit more. Not enough cherry on top of this master-cake.

enjoyed it

Worth it for Child in Time alone.

Child in time is such a timeless classic, a great rock anthem. This album in general is underrated.

Good early metal/ banging rock, went hard

Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did

A great heavy rock album, with some stone-cold classics - Speed King, Child in Time, Black Night. Worthy mention to to the lesser known Flight of the Rat which has a fantastic rocking riff. Some of the other tracks stand up less well, although most are still illuminated by the virtuoso work of messrs Blackmore and Lord. Throughout Ian Gillan's voice is magnificent

This is some absolutely serious rock ‘n’ roll. I had never heard of any of the tracks before, but it delivered on all of my expectations. Flight of the rat is an absolute highlight, and I also give a listen to black night, because although it wasn’t on this album, it was released in support of his album.

good album overall. i already know most of the big deep purple singles and enjoy the general wackiness plus technicality of 70s prog, so this album was a fun listen. speed king feels like highway star lite, and singing along to child in time is a great way to annoy everyone else in the vicinity. favorites: speed king, child in time, flight of the rat

Soms stevig, soms juist weer lekker in het gehoor. Prima basis. Maar soms is dat voor de heren niet genoeg. Dan gaan ze er nog eens overheen. Met bijvoorbeeld het gegil in Child of Time. Of het verregaande schuren in Hard Lovin' Man.

Deilig rock!

This is THE seminal cock rock album, pun intended. Also the seeds of speed metal. Can't wait to see how much the hip kids hate it. That Ian Gillan scream is really something. Gotta be second only to the Tom Waits croak for signature move by a rock vocalist.

There are only 4 of the 7 songs available on Spotify but these 4 songs are really good

Deep Purple rocks

A strong album held back by moments of screeching.

Listened to the 1995 remaster. It was nice to hear all the experiments and rehearsals. And like Colin Mochrie once said: "I like hard rocking".

I couldn't tell you any songs by Deep Purple, though I know that they were a pretty big deal once upon a time. Oh, HA! JK Smoke on the Water. Everyone knows that song! I'm diggin it so far. Something special about that eras rock. Dare I say it was purer than todays rock? Good stuff so far! Wow! The Drums on Flight of the Rat!! The drums have been a key highlight for me on this album. I really liked that album! 4 stars!

Awww yeah this one was groovy and awesome. Guitar was pure genius

Loved this album - beautiful rock! Worth a purchase! 4/5

Well executed Dad Rock

to me this sounds like if you mixed led zeppelin with yes. hard rock with progressive tendencies at times. going in i was admittedly not very familiar with deep purple, other than what i had heard on the radio (smoke on the water, highway star, hush, etc), and i liked those ok, so i wasn’t expecting much. i know jimmy page gets a lot of love (and deservedly so), but for my money give me ritchie blackmore on lead guitar. straight badass. ian gillan is a solid frontman with strong robert plant vibes. anywho, this album kicks ass. so good. highlights: “bloodsucker”, “flight of the rat”, “hard lovin’ man”.

Going into this I knew "Smoke on the Water" and that was it. This album/band really surprised me. Much more range than I gave them credit for. Some solid 70s rock venturing into the neighborhood of Motley Crue. This was pretty great.

I listened to this album while making a 70s inspired character and I felt like it really helped me get into to zone. I really liked it though!

And heavy metal is born.

Hardest rocking LP by Deep Purple & this also set a new phase for their career. Their sound is not as dark & heavy as Black Sabbath, as aggressive & technical as Led Zeppelin but the most unpredictable & most smooth among the three. Fav Track: Child in Time

Rehellistä rokkia, helppo tykätä! 4/5

It’s years since I listened to Deep Purple and I know I’ve never listened to this as an album before. Historically it’s obviously a key turning point in heavy rock, but it’s also pretty good still. Opening chords are nailing their colours to the mast and it pretty much stays that way. Well worth the listen and it filled part of a long drive excellently. I’d listen to this again but it’s a 4.5 scoring down to a 4 - drum solos have their place but a studio album isn’t the right spot.

This is proper rock from a group that could sing as well as play some awesome guitar rock. Oasis and even wee Niall Horan have both recently stated they'd love to do a pure rock album like this, so these guys were truly legendary.

Great album, raw and full of unapologetic screeches!

pinnalta kuulostaa perus hard rockilta...voisi sanoa...Mitäänsanomatonta jynkytystä....heh...ei.... kun kuuntelee vähän TARKEMMIn...jon lordin pioneeri näppäily syntikalla... ROCK AND ROLL IN HEAVEN MY FRIEND...... sanoo paljon... child in time

Pretty groovy, man. Pushing what sounds you can make with a guitar at the time. The only track that made me really perk up and pay attention is Living Wreck. Didn't move me terribly. I probably won't seek it out again. Not bad, but not my favorite.

Proggy proto-metal. Like if ELP and Led Zeppelin formed a supergroup in 1970.

A couple of the songs get a little proggy for my liking, but I overall really enjoyed it.

1st time really rocking out to Deep Purple and I enjoyed this album. Would listen to again, in fact added to main library.

Super stoner rock. Lot of these are jams that go hard! Love all the classic rock organ

Hard rock de los Deep Purple. Un 4.

Solid 70s hard rock album. If this is your jam you'll enjoy it, if not it might be a bit too screechy for you. I enjoyed the ride.

Great Deep Purple album. Child in Time is awesome

Rocks extremely hard from front to back, with a surprisingly weighty sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar is stunningly good and Ian Gillan is a compelling lead with a striking vocal range. The band is also anchored by that powerful rhythm section in Roger Glover and Ian Pace. I could take a pass on some of those organ solos, but I tell you what... Jon Lord basically uses that organ like another guitar and manages to keep pace with the likes of Blackmore, which is some next level playing. This is a powerful group of musicians, playing at the peak of their talents. Fave Songs: Child in Time, Bloodsucker, Into the Fire, Hard Lovin' Man, Speed King

Highlights: "Bloodsucker," "Flight of the Rat" It's important that this is 1970. Zeppelin, Cream, The Doors, Sabbath and The Who *just* showed up. Bowie, Steely Dan, ELP, and "Close to the Edge" show up *next* year. Deep Purple asks several bold questions! What if The Who and Sabbath were louder? What if Hendrix and Cream were faster and harder? What if The Doors were good? What if Zeppelin was better? And they just do it. The band is so much tighter and more consistent than any other psych rock contemporary, from the rhythm to the leads, and yet they still push the boundaries of the genre with timbres and rhythms that would fit in with '80s New Wave, metal, and punk. It's a masterclass in how to maintain interest in a jam, and it's shocking how such an early example of the genre set such a high bar and aged so well.

Yo wait I liked this a lot. Equivalent with the general consensus, Child in Time is fantastic, and it’s probably why I’m giving this four stars because I absolutely will be coming back to it. I’m also not going to contend the possibility that I’ll come back to this album as a whole, because the instrumentals are amazingly cohesive and precise. I don’t know, perhaps the pasta I ate for dinner put me in an insufferably positive state of mind. Don’t kill it for me.

One of the key albums that weaved the identity of the metal.

Stereotypically, as a white mid-40s male who enjoys rock music, I may have indulged on this a little too much. Bit like the Terry's chocolate orange you didn't share at Christmas. Sorry, not sorry. 4.5

Deep Purple's "Deep Purple In Rock" is a look back at what early Hard Rock and Metal sounded like in the 70s. An incredible take on the genre by a band that defined it and a wild experience seeing how far it's come. While it was a lovely time listening, I feel it doesn't hold up as well as it should. Favorite Track: Child in Time. 4/5.

Great hard rock album. Like one giant guitar solo.

Listened Before? N Wow another amazing album from Deep Purple! Apparently I was missing out on these guys for the last 40+ years and didn't know it. Great, epic record that is super heavy rocking for the era. Loved it. Child in Time is an epic for the ages! Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Child in Time

Objectively good. Had some super interesting motifs/ideas that I would like to hear more of. A pioneering album with elements recognizable in many genres that succeeded it. Crisp instrumentals, strong vocal harmonies, and incredibly progressive use of percussiveness, particularly on "Flight of the Rat". Very fitting album cover. 4.25/5

4.5 This album really goes hard holy shit. You can really hear how this album influenced all metal going forward. Particularly Ian Gillan on wailing vocals, which had to inspire the likes of Bruce Dickinson and Ritchie Blackmore fucking shredding in a way that almost sounds like Avenged Sevenfold at times. An absolute blast with a really solid pace. I’ll be listening to this often and revisiting Machine Head as well. This also so much like the music from That 70’s Show that I can’t help but love it. Favorites: Speed King, Bloodsucker, Child In Time, Living Wreck, Hard Lovin’ Man

Never listened to a Deep Purple album and I was really impressed. Great tracks

Pretty badass. I've listened to Machine Head before but not this one. Wasn't familiar with any of these songs. Love the sound of the guitar and organ playing together, often playing the same riff.

Best Deep Purple album I've heard. Fire, ferocity, and passion all here in droves. Singer dude must've had some REEEEEALLY tight jeans yo.

Harder doors

Surprisingly good!

Good rock! You need to be in the mood for this much intensity. Helps let steam out.

Solos de guitarra 10/10

Overall was a jam! Beginning of the album was better than the end, but I dug it.

Some great rock! I can't believe I haven't heard of Deep Purple before...this album is right up my alley! Highly enjoyed it!

This was a top-tier album that 100% belonged on this list. I enjoyed this from top to bottom. I'll be coming back to this!

Great example of a band/album where everyone is in sync, despite the drums and bass going off and doing their own things, it all works together.

Rockin', if a bit screamy and self-indulgent. I still say they're underrated. Best track: Hard Lovin' Man

An entertaining rock album with great instrumentals. The instruments really made this album, with the songs Child in Time and Flight of the Rat being my favorite

This album is nuts, 7 songs at 44 minutes and just endless guitar riffs and solos. Not sure why people aren't talking as much about this one vs their more famous albums. Maybe they are and I just didn't hear it but I'm hearing it now.

Way more to these guys than just Smoke on the Water. This album is a good one. Some may say it's the band's Rushmore.

Until now I only knew Deep Purple as a big name in hard rock. The album is pretty cool, especially for the era it was released in.

What a great kick in that beggining! Loved it! Amazed at the age is came out and the shredding they did. But that was mostly it though. Although enjoyable and pretty short, lacks something, which to be fair, could be because of being used to newer mixes. A great 3.8 for sure!

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Speed king, Child in time,

I've really grown to enjoy jam bands a lot over the years, and this is no exception. The instrumentals are superb throughout the album. Favorite track: Flight of the Rat

Very interesting that this harder rock iteration of Deep Purple blew up in Europe while the prior more psychedelic phase was the peak in the US. I liked this fine as early proto-metal hard rock type material goes. Probably deserves an extra star for being fairly innovative in the genre.

I am one of those people who knew nothing of Deep Purple other than Smoke on the Water. I have to admit, I believed them to be a 70s one hit wonder, with a sound that was reminiscent of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and other staples of the era. I was not prepared for what Deep Purple brought with this album. First of all, it is HEAVY. Way heavier than I imagined. I know Black Sabbath gets credited with being the genesis of heavy metal, but I found this album to go way harder (albeit not as "gutteral") than Black Sabbath's debut. The riffs are hard, fast, and yet memorable, and the solos absolutely rip. The drumming is phenomenal and together the band just sounds so cohesive. Secondly, it's way more "jammy" than I ever expected. Every song seems to go into uncharted territory with some studio improvisation. This is the kind of stuff I live for when it comes to music. And sure, it's not as exploratory as a band like the Grateful Dead, but it's unique in it's own way. I actually got assigned to Deep Purple's Made in Japan live album immediately after this. And initially I was disappointed to have to listen to the same band, the same style two albums in a row. But, I actually went on to listen to a third Deep Purple album. They are that good.

First one is one I previously owned (until my brother stole my albums and sold them on eBay). Anyway, this is a true classic. One of the first hard rock albums. Child in Time starts mellow and roars to a great guitar solo (think Stairway to Heaven). Speed King lives up to its name, there’s a bit of a fall off with the others but still solid songs.

I enjoyed this album quite a bit. Love Deep Purple, no matter how many times I hear Smoke on the Water. 4/5

Speed King, Child In Time, Black Night - CLASSICS Deep purple - deep rock, incredible instrumentals, rockstar vocals that complement each other very well, great storytelling

I loved this. True rock. Child in Time is quite the journey. Would def listen again.

4/7, 57%

Kind of a 3.5/5 for me. Some great tracks, pretty self indulgent at the same time

Pretty good album actually. "Children in Time" is the best song on the album, especially the middle portion. 7/10.

My gosh the guitars and speed kings yum

It's definitely an experience, they play with sound and instruments so listening with headphones is a must. It took me a while to start this album because I accidentally listend to the 25th anniversary edition that has 20 instead of 7 tracks and some of them are quite long. There are also some very short studio chats and different versions of songs which was intereting. All in all, a great album.

Really enjoyed the album, very good vocals and instrumental. Opened me up to a new rock band to listen to and sparked my interest in. Will definitely listen too again.

A classic and quintessential rock album
