Definitely Maybe

Sounding as fresh today as 28 years ago. The album of my childhood. Played it to death. Like a lot of kids my age WTSMG had my curiosity but this record grabbed my attention like no other I can remember. Changed the course of music in the uk. Biblical. 5/5

From the first to the last minute you're covered in this wall of guitar sound that could either pick you up or annoy the hell out of you. I'm in the former camp and consider this debut of Oasis as their best album. The strong songwriting of Noel and the fact that Liam actually did show up to the studio these years to sing the songs (which he does a lot better than his brother) makes this a raw rock 'n' roll album. Some songs are indeed a bit better than others, but songs like Supersonic, Slide Away and Live Forever are standing strong. And I don't care that Cigarettes and Alcohol is a complete T.Rex ripoff. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5 1001-Worthy: 5/5

I never really thought this album was all that great when I first heard it ages ago. It's not terrible but I never understood the hype. Live Forever is pretty terrific but outside of that its a lot of songs ranging from "listenable" to "good" with a couple annoyances thrown in "Shakermaker", I'm looking at you. I think they got better with the next album. I actually think Be Here Now might be overall more enjoyable than this one as well. Now that's a hot take!

I'm struggling with this one. It just completely faded into the background on both listens. When reviewing the track listing I was like "huh Supersonic was on this, Cigerettes & Alcohol" no recollection at all. Maybe because nodoby is home and I decided to play this on my speakers instead of using headphones?

Not the smartest or the most modest album by a mile in terms of lyrics and music, but it goes hard and strong full of great tunes. This and Morning Glory are near perfect albums, and their material afterwards was nowhere near good. Live Forever is probably my favourite song of theirs, though its hard when half of the songs on here match the same quality. Even the b sides on the delxue are really good, especially Sad Song, Fade Away and Whatever.

I wanted to like this album more than I ended up liking it. "What's the Story Morning Glory" is much more my style. A lot of these songs blurred together for me, so nothing stood out, but it was a fine enough listen. I'll give it a 3.5, rounded down to 3 for this scale's whole-number system.

Couldn't get into it. Just insanely boring and uninteresting. All the songs sound the same.. guess Oasis isn't for me because I always found Wonderwall to be very boring as well. Blur wins. Actually Suede wins but they were too busy doing crack cocaine during the whole feud. Can't believe these guys used to be labeled as "the next Beatles".

Definitely Maybe by Oasis (1994) I was intrigued to read (Wikipedia) that in a 2005 BBC poll, this record was #4 on the list of most overrated albums ever, but in a 2006 NME poll, it was voted the #1 best album of all time, finishing just above Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles (1967). Are you kidding me? What’s going on here? Don’t get me wrong. This album is good, but clearly there’s a divergence of opinion. I just note this in passing. Lyrics here fall into a pattern of fizzling at the end of each song, unraveling into repetitive poetic codas before the demands of musical closure. This, on top of the standard weakness of superfluous phrases being used to fill out the metrical scheme renders these lyrics mildly clever at best. And the message of the weirdly out of place closing track “Married with Children” will make you not want to be. The music is good, with electric rhythm guitar recorded using heavy sustain, and nice chord progressions that are easy on the ears yet with enough variety to keep the listener engaged. This the central feature of everything that’s good about this album. And it’s also the most ‘American-sounding’ feature. Sorry if that disappoints the blokes on the other side of the pond, but there it is. Lead guitar stylings by Noel Gallagher are ok, but not flashy or soulful. There’s a nice drum groove by Tony Carroll in the opening bars of both “Live Forever”and “Bring It on Down”, but elsewhere the percussion is merely standard. And Paul McGuigan’s bass playing is usually just ‘in there somewhere’. Lead vocals by Liam Gallagher are consistently characterized by this cloying, exaggerated, drawn out rounding of vowels which, I suppose, serves to compensate for a very limited range and a very deficient timbre. [Picture this: Wouldn’t it be fun for four guys to sit down in an Italian ristorante in Brooklyn and all together order lasagna the way Liam Gallagher repeatedly pronounces it on “Digsy’s Dinner”? They’d be thrown outta da place.] And his falsetto is really bad. This band would sound a lot better with a different lead singer. But if you like the multi-layer rock rhythm guitar textures that you’ll hear on this album (and I do) it’s quite satisfactory. 3/5

A lesser outing as compared to the masterpiece of 'Morning Glory' that would follow in '95. That being said, this isn't a bad album by any means - one can hear the slow churn of early grunge mixing in with Britpop, even if the two disparate genres still seem a little at odds.

90's Brit pop classic. Some good music, nothing revolutionary but a fun listen. I use to think What's the Story Morning glory was there best but I think I like this more.

Oasis songs all sound pretty similar, but with that, it is easy listening. Solid album

This really is one of the great debut albums ever. Swirling, confident rock and roll laced with perfect pop melodies and some killer hooks. What's not to like about it? It's also just a really well crafted album that flows effortlessly. Starting out with a solid rocker like "Rock 'n' Roll Star" and ending up at the stripped down "Married with Children" is pretty brilliant. Pretty droning and repetitive for a band that claimed to be bigger than the Beatles lmao I was just underwhelmed. How do all the tracks sound like the exact same song? All the instruments sound uninspired. The guitar work is lazy and lame; the lyrics don't help either. The vocalist can't seem to stop doing his teenage John Lennon impression for a single second. The way it's mixed doesn't appeal to me either; all the sounds muddle together in a bad way. Listening to the whole thing just felt like a chore. I can at least stand their best songs, but none of them were on this album anyway. One of the most monotonous albums I've had in a while. Again and again 90s music underwhelms me lmao. SO many people say it's such a great decade for music, and I've yet to see why

When Definitely Maybe first came out they led off in North America with Supersonic , which wasn’t my bag, though it has since grown on me. If they’d led off with Live Forever, like they did in the UK, I’d have probably been on board sooner. I find this album a mixed bag, but it’s one of my favourite recorded acoustic guitar tones. Slide Away always strikes me as a missed opportunity, because it really told us which way they were heading, but they used it as a b-side.

I remember this being released, fairly sure it was played many times where I worked but a good chunk of this still seemed unfamiliar. Supersonic was played everywhere and maybe, because of that, was one of my least favourites on here. Shakermaker and Married With Children are ones I would come back to.

Better than 'What's the Story Morning Glory', this one has a few tracks I genuinely quite like but on the whole it's still not a brilliant album - Oasis just not super my thing

I hate that I love this album. But it's an annoyingly good album, it can't be denied!

I can absolutely see why some people love this. It's catchy, fun, uplifting, and energetic. But its also not very tight, samey through and through, and personally Liam's vocals really get to me after a while. I still liked it, but definitely no more than that.

A bit of a bore. I could enjoy some mustard on the sandwich, but I don't want all mustard.

This very much reminds me of the mid-90s: overblown and bland.

Ambiance heaven

Not really remarkable, but good in a lot of ways. Love Forever is the obvious standout. I'd give it another shot but it wasn't gripping.

A really good Brit pop record, not great but pretty well crafted. Morning Glory is better, but this has all the elements: hooks, sing a long choruses, interesting if not classic guitar play.

I'd got so used to Oasis being a plodding, dull band for plodding, dull, Brexity arseholes that I'd forgotten the first album is actually pretty good. I think their biggest mistake was losing the drummer - this is a more energetic, driving album than anything that followed. Live Forever and Supersonic are canon. Cigarettes and Alcohol and Shakermaker are okay, but overrated. The lyrics are crap, the music is fun. They've punched above their weight since 1995, but this was better than I was expecting.

Oasis has a few really great songs, but just like back in the 90s, it takes a lot for me to get past Liam's whiney drawl. And there's still that aftertaste of just constant fighting in the band and the weird, constant bitter anger that seemed to surround them. Or maybe just Liam. I don't know. 'Live Forever' absolutely works. 'Supersonic' works for me. But there's still so much going against this band for me.

A tad rudimental, no? But for all that, effective rock 'n' roll. My views on Oasis have mellowed with age, and I've come to appreciate the idiosyncratic vocal delivery pitched halfway between John Lennon and Johnny Rotten. A nice, stompy collection of of big rock numbers that delivers subtlety like a smack around the chops - and all the better for it.

I can't help but laugh at how much I hated Oasis back in the mid-90s. I don't really blame myself as much as the Gallaghers and the clear joy they got out of being famous pricks who dominated the news. But at long last I finally caved and gave into the (morning) glory that is the album that came after "Definitely Maybe." And thank God I started with that one, because this album is almost like listening to a different band. The songs simply aren't there and they can't get by on attitude alone. I dig a few of them, but the leap they took between these two albums is pretty incredible. So, TLDR: I don't hate Oasis anymore, but this isn't an album I'll ever love.

Rock ‘n’ Roll star and Live Forever were best for me, but could be because they were earlier on album. By the end of it I’ve felt like I’ve had too much of the driving guitars. I think I liked it more twenty years ago. Very reminiscent of the 90s, iconic. Musically an important album historically, but hasn’t aged as well as it could have IMHO.

Bland and boring and sounds like everything else bland and boring, or at least it spawned its own brand of bland and boring (which they do very well, mind you). In either case, no thanks.

I looked supersonic but not enough to want to listen to this album again.

Fine rock album.

A classic! Not always original but with a lot of attitude and some great songs.

Partly nostalgia, but also this is still full of big tunes and singalong choruses.

Never was a huge fan of Oasis. I guess you had to be there.

Oh wow. So Oasis ISN'T just Wonderwall. Yeah this album is much better than Wonderwall. But nothing really stands out on it's own imo. It's just okay.

I really don't want to be like this but... vocals are a make-or-break thing for me in a lot of these albums, and something about Gallagher's vocal style just drives me nuts in a bad way. Part of it is how much I loathe their song Wonderwall and how hearing his vocals reminds me of that song regardless of the rest of the band's contributions. But honestly, musically, I'm kinda shrugging through this album. It's not bad, but it's not a super-enjoyable listen for me, and the vocals just push it over the other side to "not something I want to listen to again."

This is better than 901 of the albums on this list. Oasis is fantastic. However, their two big hits on this album sound very similar. Starts off with slow drums, followed up with guitar riffs, etc... Very Oasis, which is not a bad thing. You can probably get your Oasis fix with "(What's the story) Morning Glory" and be fat and happy. I don't think this album adds anything that Oasis hasn't achieved with the other album on this list.

Slide Away is the standout here. They have many really good songs, but I fall off a bit the more they resort to cliched rock wall of sound with a Sex Pistols whine and sneer. It’s fine, but their melodies with supersonic and slide away are where they shine.

I had very low expectations going in. Never really liked their radio stuff. But I was pleasantly surprised. Didn't blow me away, but there are some very good tracks on this album. 3.5 stars.

I don’t think I ever listened to Oasis for a protracted period before and honestly wasn’t that impressed. A monotone and kind of grating guitar sound, pretty dull drum and bass, and lyrics that are superficially glib but not really saying much. Workmanlike rock but is there any real innovation?

Sounds super 90s and really dated. Songs go on way too long and probably could have cut a bunch of them. Totally biased review as I love 90’s Oasis. And this is my favourite Oasis album and live forever one of my favourite songs. This album is so raw and generation defining so many great songs (mostly influenced/ripped off from British bands bands before them but hey it’s a fine line between influences and copying) , the only dud in my opinion is Digsy’s Dinner. A solid 5 star album which might upset some pretentious music snobs.

Goddammit, not another one. I guess the question is, is this album worse than (What's the Story) Morning Glory? It doesn't have any songs as obnoxiously overplayed as Wonderwall or the other hits off that album, but I feel like outside of being driven into my brain over and over again by the dull trepanation blade that is commercial rock radio, the songwriting on that album is, overall, slightly better. Not Wonderwall, that song is like the Chernobyl of pop music, but outside of that, it strives for something better than the blandness that is this album. If you inspire hatred, at least you're inspiring an emotion.

90s me would have been way more into this. It was cool, but I needed to be at a 90s Party with Dawsons Creek or something on in the background to get into this. Didn’t dislike, but I wouldn’t seek it either, especially since these guys are assholes as their baseline.

Wow. NOT what I was expecting. I’ve listened to a ton of Oasis and love them but I’ve not listed to this specific album lots. Some gems, but a lot is frankly not good.

Mixed feelings. Some hits on here, a LOAD of nostalgia as a Manchester lad, but it's not a great album to listen through. The production is just so aggressive that the snare rattles my teeth, also the plodding tempos are tiring. Columbia was a nice surprise though. I don't think I've knowingly heard that before. Good for what it is, but not a killer.

Oasis just not my tempo. I have no nostalgic connection to this album (which seems to fuel a LOT of the praise in these ratings), it all sounds a bit samey, and every song could have a good 60-90 seconds shaved off.

Incredibly solid album and one that I've gone back to over the years time and again. Sure it will never be Blur for me, but it's damn good.

What I just heard is probably one of the best summarization of the '90s alternative rock tsunami. Unfortunately, that's what "Definitely Maybe" seemed to only do, it just summarized rock sounds of its time. They did it well though, but focusing on the sound for almost an hour? It gets tiresome after a while. I only knew Oasis as the "Wonderwall" boys. It was narrated that their name was used to be "Rain", after the Beatles song released almost three decades earlier. Apparently, Oasis based their sound on the mentioned track. But while one can hear The Beatles's "Rain" in it, the sound of "Definitely Maybe" is heavily grunge-like. The grunge and alt-rock songs of '90s and even the '00s can be heard in these rock songs driven by the deliciously hazy guitars. It's so '90s rock. Unfortunately, this makes the album generic. But it's still fun nonetheless. At least in small doses. It's interesting how it went from this to "Wonderwall". Even the chill closing track is different from it. Perhaps they're still finding their sound here.

Still a great album of my youth, I had it in my head I preferred this album due to it being a bit rawer, but listening now not as good as def maybe.

There is only one good song on Definitely Maybe and that is "Supersonic". Every other track is Oasis music. If you're into that, come join the mid-90s glad wagon. Otherwise, other music is available.

Though not as coherent as ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory’ Oasis’ debut is energetic and full of memorable songs. This band came on the scene knowing exactly who they were. Their sound is developed and their delivery is spot on

Kocht deze CD tegelijkertijd met the Blue album van Weezer en raakte dus wat ondergesneeuwd! Jaren later viel het kwartje wel. Erger me dood aan die arrogantie, maar het is wel een te gek plaatje. Jezelf de beste band sinds The Beatles noemen gaat alleen echt VEEL te ver.

Listening to the remastered version. It sounds good, the songs are nice but I don't really connect with them as I would 10 years ago. Some of these songs will definitely go on a playlist of mine.

It is Oasis - Has Slide Away, so that is nice.

Das ist rauh, unverschämt, unglaublich großspurig und brilliant. Ungehobelter als Morning Glory, ungestümer auch weil unbefangener. Besoffen von sich selbst, euphorischer weil das Koks noch als Luxus geschätzt wurde und nicht normal war; man hört den unbedingten Aufstiegswillen. Das Un-Album, fällt mir gerade auf. Und unartig es ist, un-arty übrigens auch noch. Geiles Schlagzeug übrigens, von mir aus hätte Tony Carroll das ewige Maskottchen bleiben dürfen.

1994 - Alt Rock / Brit rock

pube brilliance. best album in the whole damn world

Parts of Shakermaker sound like “I’d like to teach the world to sing” They were parts of the album that sounded like T. Rex, Beatles and even Holly Johnson. Oasis were good at self marketing, being in the press a lot when they were up and coming, always courting controversy. But in reality they were no better than a lot of other mediocre groups of their time. Would I listen to this again? No, this isn’t the first time I’ve listened to it and given the gap in time since I last listened to it I would say that my views haven’t changed and it hasn’t improved with age.

With this album it will forever be 21/22 year old me drunk on the dance floor of an indie club at 3am, a gin and tonic in one hand, a cigarette hanging from my lips, ready to take on the world. Forget the Britpop hype and all the other BS, this is a powerful band in its raw form. Listening back to it after such a long time I am struck by the fact it still gives me tingles up the spine. To me it really is a good album. Later one the may have disappeared in a pile of white powder and too much borrowed Beatles riffs but this a solid debut

Whiney, all the songs sound the same, redundant

Pretty good. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Good songs but not a lot of them catch my attention or stick out as really good to me. I really enjoyed Live Forever and the last three songs: Digsy's Dinner, Slide Away, and Married With Children. I've loved Married With Children for a long time now and have never heard anything else from this album so I was surprised to hear that it sounds completely different from all the other songs. The production is stripped back and the vocals gentler. All the other songs kinda sound the same to me with the songs I mentioned sounding the best. I'll listen to them more in the future and maybe give the album another listen. Sometimes albums really grow on me after another listen.

One of those bands that I dislike but will always scream along to. I find their singles better than the album cuts - possibly nostalgia coming into play. This album isn’t as stacked as Morning Glory but it’s hard to deny Live Forever which is such a positive song. Fave tracks: “Live Forever” “Cigarettes & Alcohol” “Rock & Roll Star”

So much of this album is a lot of the same. Doesn't quite take me on a "journey" the way my favorite albums do. That isn't always a problem, but I am not in love with Oasis' sound. Good music, but not necessarily for me. 3.5/5

Still a corker

A decent album. I was not familiar with really any of the songs but they had a 90s feel to them. This album did not have any of really well known songs.

A very good album, this is maybe the third time I've listened to it and it was the most impressive. I always was of the opinion that Blur was the superior band but this album now makes it a closer race. The album rocks and has great songs. A fine album 4 atars

Classic 90s pub Rock, from my youth

Better than the pther one i listened to by them, but still find the sining a bit annoying, plus some of the rhyme schemes are at about the level of a 4year old.

Still their best, but on relistening it's so lumpy and uninspiring - just walls of barre chords, pentatonic solos and nothing lyrics. It hangs together purely on Liam's sneer and volume.

Rock n Roll Star - meh (2) Shaker maker - pretty solid song. Classic album of the Britpop era. Vacillating on how many stars to give it. Although iconic, there were better bands and albums of that era imo. Saw them at Knebworth 1996, although The Prodigy blew them off the stage.

digsy's dinner is the best song from this album hands down

One of those albums that anchors memories of the mid-90s for so many people. It's no masterpiece but never gets old.

A very fine debut album. Songs are good, though not quite of the caliber of morning glory. I am annoyed of their "influences" coming dangerously close to blatant rip off. Keeps it from a full blown 4 so I'm giving 3.75 🌟

I mean... it's good. I like better What's the story... There's a lot of similar things. I think that emotions linked to music have a lot to do with the age when we listen to it for the first time. I was a fan when I was 11 and I listened to Wonderwall for the first time. It still affects me, that song made me create a world in my head... Life is not a song, kid... Well, maybe...

Friday 17th September Listened in the car on the way to Anna Smith's wedding in Norfolk. The drawl, the bombast, it's pure rock and roll.

Despite how unbearable the Gallagher brothers have become, this is a pretty kickass album. I'm not the biggest fan of Liam's voice, he just sounds a little stale to me, but I think the direction the band takes their music sort of makes it blend well. With something to prove for their debut album, Oasis comes out on top to give you a straight rock and roll album that brings that exciting live crowd energy right through your speakers. It espouses fun, positive sounds that were definitely a contrast to the popular dark, despairing tones grunge was emanating. However, I think the album is very one dimensional. It doesn't deviate much from the sound it creates in the opening track, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it doesn't make it a great record that I would really want to listen through again. Songs start to blend together in my mind, and you can tell they sort of took the foundation of some songs and expanded on them later for their popular hits. I'll probably just play some songs here and there as I want. Overall this album seemed like it was a bigger deal for the UK than the US with bringing back Britpop and rock to popularity, so it doesn't hold cultural significance for me. Never sat to listen to this. its a good album. not a favourite

this definitely struck me as more pop-punk than britpop, which I appreciated. a couple of tracks stood out but a lot of this just couldn't help but fade into the background, it didn't really grip me. 6/10

7/10, might bump up to an 8 on a relisten because I didn't focus during a lot of the middle section.

One of the things that irks me the most about Britpop is the abundance of 4-5 minute-long songs that seem to go nowhere. Also, Oasis overuses the word "maybe". Maybe if it wasn't in the album title and also the word they said the most in two of their most popular songs it wouldn't bother me as much. Ultimately, this was meh. 5/10

Definitely Maybe might be the first whole album I've listened to from Oasis. "Live Forever" is the only track from this album that I recognized, and it's okay. There are songs from Oasis that I like, but they are from different albums. None of the tracks from Definitely Maybe appeared to be a potential new favorite. Nearly all of the tracks on this album were backed by a constant, fuzzy, grinding rhythm guitar that wore me out about 2/3 of the way through the album. Individually, the tracks seemed okay, but as a whole the album drops below 3 stars. I was done with the album before I finished listening to the last track.

A ciegas y en definitiva es distinto al otro disco que nos tocó, en el que se sentía una idea de querer hacer una producción muy especial y terminó en pura basura. Si comparo este disco por ejemplo con el disco de los Stone Roses (siguiendolo como una línea evolutiva de este sonido de Manchester que no me termina de cuadrar en lo personal), siento que aquí se siente una idea más formada y definida. En los Stone Roses el sonido quizá se sentía más etereo y con un dejo de verte desde arriba. El sonido en este disco es bastante terrenal, se siente influencia de glam, rock, psicodelia, punk. Toma todas estas influencias y las mezcla... dejemos en que las mezcla. Llega al problema de nuevo en que el resultado musicalmente en esta ocasión si bien es más "escuchable" se siente totalmente derivativo y falto de originalidad, siento que de aquí es claro cuando decíanq ue solo querían copiar a los Beatles, se siente muy obvio la linea de toda la composición como si fuera levantada del libro "fórmulas del rock pop." También siento que tiene partes instrumentales muy largas que solo están ahí para alargar las canciones sin que haya mérito de nada musical por presumir en las mismas (en serio todas las canciones de estos cabrones tenían que ser tan largas??). Las letras... estupidas y exageradas aun si son ligeramente menos engreidas que en el disco posterior. Live Forever me pareció una canción decente. En realidad mucho mejor de lo que esperaba en especial al comparar con el otro disco, pero se me sigue haciendo una banda bastante mediocre en muchos de sus aspectos.

Imagino que para aquellos a quienes nos gusta el estilo de Oasis este es un gran disco, pero entiendo cómo podría parecerle monótono y hasta quizá aburrido a alguien que no. Aunque tiene canciones clásicas como Shakermaker, Live Forever y Supersonic, reconozco que escuchar el álbum completo puede ser pesado por el efecto constante de las guitarras, que está presente en todas menos la última canción (que por cierto, me gusta justo por eso). Es frecuente que se asocie a Oasis con The Beatles, creo que la influencia se nota más en "Up in the Sky" y "Cigarrettes & Alcohol", por el estilo musical y la selección de instrumentos. También el uso de la pandereta en algunas canciones abona a realizar dicha comparación.

A pesar de que por alguna extraña razón sentí que eran puros guitarrazos sin sentido al principio ya después fue mejorando un poco, me gustó un leve más que el anterior pero siempre he creído 1ue son unos inflados mamaleros sin sentido

Tiene la obvia situación de disco debut en la que solo una o dos rolas realmente funcionaban pero le dieron a la banda el trampolín para arrancar su carrera. No me gustó Cigarrettes and Alcohol, que se basa en el riff de Bang a Gong de T. Rex, pero me encanta Slide Away y es, para mí, el clímax del disco aunque nunca salió como sencillo. Otro mérito del álbum (y de la banda en este momento) es abrirle la puerta al britpop en medio de la enorme popularidad que tenían otros géneros.

Incredible album from front to back. There's something great about the raw sound to this record. Definitely has been in my rotation since it came out and I still listen to it to this day.

Pure loud 90s rock, so good

Oasis is  heavy enough but not too heavy. Goldilocks R&R if you will. They are sufficiently well known  that most everyone will know their popular songs.  I like these guys but never sat and listened through this album before.  The band is tight and the guitars kick. Side 3 is my favourite starting off with the hit and then followed by Bring it on Down and Ciggs & Alch which  are two really good ass kicking rock and roll songs. 

If I were to compare the output of the Brit bands of the 90s to their cohort grunge bands from the US, this is less dark and more melodic. Overall, I'm not really into this sound and I feel bad for the kids who missed out on the first wave of it in the 70s and the second in the 80s. The compositions and delivery are top drawer and it's easy to see why they were so popular. Supersonic is an anthemic debut single, Live Forever is good to, Cigarettes & Alcohol is totally Bang-a-Gong, but I'm sure Rick Beato would explain away that one, and apparently T-Rex borrowed it from Chuck Berry.

This is one of those bands that get real annoying fast. Must be the U2 and Coldplay effect. This album is 3 hrs long, (eye roll) but I could only get thru a few songs before I threw in the towel.

Missed the boat when these guys were at their peak as I was much more interested in the big beat electronic stuff coming out of Britain. Also Wonderwall never really did it for me so I never ever really gave them a shot. Listening now I can understand the hype and had I been 10 years older I would've been an Oasis tragic I've got no doubt. Great album. Give it a few more years and listens and I have no doubts it'll be 5 stars by then.

I don’t like this band

Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Some good tracks

A solid 90s rock album. I thought the drummer was kind of the standout for me on this album. I also realized that while I don't dislike Oasis at all, Liam Gallagher's voice isn't one that draws me in and at times even annoyed me a bit. Looking forward to hearing their other work on the list to see if I may be able to connect a bit more to it because the obvious talent and ability is there.

Nice easy listening. Wonderwall gives you a bad idea of what this band can do.

I want to like this album. There is a real nostalgia factor here for me with Liam Gallagher’s voice and the entire vibe of the music. But this nostalgia is really predicated on the two standout songs from (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?. Ultimately, without the nostalgia piece I would rate this a 1.5 or 2. Nostalgia brings it to 2.5. The fact is I just find the music boring and struggled to finish the album the first time through. I gave it a second listen and had the same reaction. No songs stand out. This is just my own personal tastes coming through.

Mais je ne serais pas franc avec vous si je vous cachais que je m'étais endormi après trois chansons lors de ma première écoute. En effet, ma routine matinale fait que ce genre de mésaventure peut arriver. Après chaque réveil, je me dirige sans tarder à la douche et, après l'avoir prise, retourne dans mon lit pour y sécher ma barbe. Il m'arrive alors de lancer l'album du jour, pensant naïvement que je ne me rendormirais pas. Et c'est pourtant ce qui se passe à chaque fois. À suivre...

Live Forever: Cazzo che brutta! Me sona sbagliato tutto, dalla voce alle chitarre. L'assolo: ma veramente? Ma perchè? "meibeeeee". No dai. Columbia: Almeno un po' orecchiabile però 6 minuti me sembra come minimo eccessivo. Bring It On Down: Dai pure questa simpatica. Però so veramente prolissi per essere un gruppo pop. Ma perché sti assoli da quindicenni in sala prove? In Conclusione: Io c'ho provato seriamente, ma a me sto album, anche con tutte le attenuanti del caso (anni, etc) mi sembra appena sopra al livello di gruppo delle medie. Non riesco davvero a capirne il fascino, cioè a sto punto i Blur erano molto meglio. La voce di Gallagher (Noel? Liam? Non ho capito chi è dei due) nel 70% dei casi mi fa lo stesso effetto di un bambino che frigna perché vuole il gelato.

Questo disco mi ha annoiato. Non mi piace come suona ed a tratti il cantato lo trovo fastidioso. Mi sembra povero di contenuti musicali. Lo stile è conosciuto e mainstream però non mi convince.

What a stinking pile of shit. Vapid lyrics, no clear single, and boring musically. The way the vocalist holds out the end of every damned line... its just awful. I listened to the album 3.5 times, once reading the lyrics. The band is muddy sounding and uninspiring. I know that they have good songs like wonderwall and don't look back in anger, but they are missing from this album. About the only thing good on this album is that they sampled Get it On by t rex on "cigarettes and alcohol." ...I took 5 mins just now to look it up and they are claiming this as their riff - so plagiarism. great. drops it from a 3/10 to a 2/10 - No good songs on the album, but some songs don't actively offend me. Maybe they meant to put their other album on this list and this was a typo?

Enthused about this in 1994 and still enjoy the songs today. Energy, humour, melodies and hooks. good songwriting.

well that was a lovely trip down memory lane. i can completely understand why they got so big so quickly. this album is huge and they backed it up with the live shows and the swagger. love em or hate em you have got to give this album its dues. it was fucking massive 30 years ago and it still stands up today. on the subject of rip offs (of which there are many), to take something and make it so different is still impressive and as much as Noel is a closet tory cunt it desreves respect that all of these tracks are so undeniably oasis.

One of the better 4. I am excited for their next albums, because this has some potential. So far I prefer Oasis over Blur.

Is Oasis energetic? Sure. Do they sound good? Yeah, if you're into a wall of overdriven guitars. I like that sort of thing, even if Oasis' sound is rather one-dimensional. But how about the songs? They're pleasant enough, in an off the rack kind of way. And therein lies the main problem with Definitely Maybe: Oasis has taken the rock music of the previous quarter century and put it in a blender. It sounds okay, but there is nothing remotely distinctive about it. The song structures and melodies could have have been bought like so many yards of carpet. I'm not a lyrics guy, but even a cursory listen will reveal that these songs are nothing but a compendium of cliches. So far, this review is making it sound like I hate Oasis, but I really don't. How could I be roused to a strong emotion like hate when the music of Oasis barely exists? If this came on the radio, I wouldn't turn it off because there's nothing offensive about it, but it would cease to exist in my mind the instant the last chords faded. Definitely Maybe is well enough done for what it is--the 90s equivalent of bubblegum music--but it's hard to imagine more instantly disposable industry product.

Constant loud guitars and whichever Gallagher brother sings' accent. After one album from each, Blur are blowing Oasis out of the water in the battle of Britpop.

summer of '94. I'm 17 years old. Word is out that there is a party in some blokes house down the road. I rob a bottle of vodka from my parents liqour cabinet. I go to the party and scoff the vodka in an hour and wash it down with a couple of cans of Linden Village. I go to the toilet but smash the whole toilet bowl (I'm still not sure how) and it floods the entire floor of the house. The cops are called and everyone flees. Some cop shines a flashlight in my face and I kick it out of his hand. He punches me to the ground and then he asks my name. I say "Mise Eire". He takes me down to my parents house and my parents put me to bed. I jump out my bedroom window (two stories up and I have a scar in the side of my arse too) and run up the village looking for a botle of vodka I've already drank wearing a baseball cap, a string vest and a pair of y-fronts. I thump the door of the house screaming "WHERES MY VODKA!!" at the top of my voice until my brother comes to my rescue. The day after I watched Oasis on Top of The Pops play "Live Forever" and I thought it was amazing. I'd seen them on The Word a week before play "Shakermaker" and I thought it was a bit shit. Got the album on a shopping trip with my mum a few days earlier and it became the soundtrack to that fortnight that I was grounded. Still holds up, definitely (maybe) their best

Already heard it 27 years ago. It's a classic but it's all downhill from there. Saw them in 95 twice and they were great. Last time was Loch Lomond 96. Never need to hear any of their other albums again. But for a while they really were great.

Play Wonderwall! I think the British went all in for Oasis with this album, greatest band since the Beatles, etc. We Americans needed the broader range of their much better follow up record, and precious Wonderwall, a timeless acoustic torch song that countless aspiring guitar players would try to cover and use to get laid. I thought this album was great in patches. Some catchy songs. They keep the same sonic palette for the whole album - the big wall of chiming guitars are always ringing. It never lets up. There's no pauses for contrast. Play Wonderwall! Play Champagne Supernova! Play Cast No Shadow! The lyrics are full of convenient rhymes, but I really like the couplet on the final track "your music's shite, it keeps me up all night". B-

There are moments where this album shows promise, some real foot tappers, some good jams, the nice acoustic piece at the end. It’s indicative of what they will do better in their next album. But there was a lot of generically interchangeable songs on this album, Lots of guitar strumming I could tell the difference between and a lot of it sounds dated. To me the sign of a great album transcends the sound of the decade it came from. Not bad. But not great. C so 2.

Creo que los estoy viendo lo más cercano a lo que siempre fueron: unos truhanes con un puñadito de canciones buenas que hicieron mella en la cultura popular mundial siendo ellos mismos, dejándose explotar como la imagen de la clase trabajadora que la clase media ama odiar y desea lujuriosamente: semisalvajes borrachos con acentos apenas comprensibles sin atisbo de respetar las normas básicas de convivencia de la estratificadadísima sociedad inglesa. El norteño (yo) reconoce a otros norteños. Rescatemos su valía. Porque al final sí hay talento ahí, en esas canciones para el concepto argentino del aguante, para el canto masivo, y extender los brazos al aire y sentirte vivo, aunque sea un par de horas. Eso tiene mucho valor. Y mira que acompañarte en la adolescencia, cuando nadie te soporta y te caga todo, ya es, también, bastante mérito. Aquí hablo por mí mismo. En fin, a lo que voy, trato de dirigirme a la sensación primigenia que me producen algunos tracks de este disco: la intención de trascender las limitaciones físicas, energéticas, aptitudinales y de conducta, pero sobre todo de dinero y lugar. La posibilidad de salir de tu cuerpo, de tu ciudad aburridad, de poder vivir algo más de lo que ya sabes que tu existencia va a merecer. Es un estremecimiento de esos que no se olvidan, un chorro de energía que te bautiza como una persona que sabe que quiere algo más de la vida. Lo que sea. Nomás por eso, si un escucha logra obtener ese chispazo, creo que vale la pena seguir escuchando este disco. Y bueno hay momentos brillantes aquí, acompañados de esa alegría del primerizo que va topándose con buenas melodías en el camino, a pleno andar, la serendipia y la sorpresa de confirmar tu talento. Es curioso pensar, viendo para atrás, que mientras una buena parte del Reino Unido (el negro) creaba futuros en tiempo real (electrónica, jungle, etc), aquí se rascaban el ombligo para encontrar un poco de oro entre la peluza. Y lo lograron. Y a parte te mostraban la piedrita reluciente con arrogancia. El tema de la arrogancia. Un poco de esa arrogancia que se extraña en el panorama masificado actual, ahora que las celebridades siguen una moral de P.R. y se comportan como las empresas que realmente son. En fin, yo, el antiguo fan de Oasis, tengo 35 años, hay pandemia de por medio y qué ganas dan de ponerse una peda marca Cigarrette's and Alcohol. Y todo bien.
