Reviews (page 8 of 14)
I am conflicted on this record. Maybe it's listening to way too much Wonderwall for my entire life. Listening to a couple songs is great. An entire Oasis record and his voice sounds like it pining and whining at me for an hour.
Oasis know their way around a killer hook and melody; I’ll give them that. And “Supersonic” is a banger. But I am put off by Liam Gallagher’s gratingly nasal vocal delivery, as exemplified by the dreadful “Shakermaker” or “Slide Away,” and by his exaggerated annunciation on a song like “Cigarettes & Alcohol.” And the last song is awful. Back in the day, I tried to ignore Oasis based on the songs that got inescapable airplay (“Champagne Supernova” is truly ridiculous) and the absurd hype comparing them to the next Beatles. This is better than I anticipated, but it still hits like a giant dose of cockiness.
Feel like I could just repeat my review for What's the Story. Still not a fan of Liam's delivery. Probably fewer great tracks on here than the other.
Not even close to as good as What’s the Story… granted, that’s a high bar. But I just find this Oasis record mediocre. There are absolutely some bangers and the guitarwork is excellent and fun. But this album just doesn’t do it for me. But it’s also not bad. Squarely a 3 for me.
This one has a rougher sound to it that sets it apart from most of the britpop stuff, it's not like - even Nirvana - but it shreds a little bit more and the vocals are stabbing at a Sex Pistols thing. This gets smoothed out later on but this is the best Oasis album for my money.
I hate Oasis but I had this memory of the first album being good. On listening again, it's OK. Starting your first LP with Rock n Roll Star is fun but it's all downhill from there. I do like the chorus of Colombia and the weird way some of the words are stretched out on Cigarettes and Alcohol though.
Love Married with children, everything is mid
Eh, never clicked with me. Seems average, never totally clear why they were such a sensation. Lots of British things I don't grok. What is a pudding, for instance? Madness, I tell you. Flats, lifts, tubes, &tc.
nudne
Middle of the road album for me.
Decent britpop. That is, upbeat, danceable shimmery confident indie rock with British vocal delivery. More middle-of-the road than Blur but more listenable for it. On Columbia you can hear the Happy Mondays influence. Reverby wall of sound guitar chords over a dance-style drumbeat. Best track - Live Forever, Columbia, Supersonic 3 or 4 stars. 3.5, rounded down to 3 It is what it is, but it is done very well.
Some good stuff on here but it's mostly a "whatever" album. It's nice to listen to, and then you'll never think about it again when you're done. Someone in the reviews said this was on par with debut albums like the Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, and Elvis- what are you smoking? Hate the album art.
What's the Story Morning Glory is definitely the better album.
I’m not a huge fan, but this blew the cobwebs off with its homage to earlier classic songs. Done with exhuberance, vigour and sheer loud rock n roll.
I like Oasis. Decent album
I’m just not that into Oasis. It’s fine.
It's good, but I wouldn't say it's great. Oasis have always come off as overrated in my opinion, and finally sitting down to listen to a whole album only confirms that to me. There's a few tracks that had me engaged, and then the rest just blended into one another. Wish I could have loved this a little more, but I'm afraid I'm just not an Oasis guy. Favourite track: Live Forever Least favourite track: Digby's Dinner
più di 3 ma non so se le la sento di dare 4, chiaramente gli oasis hanno un romanticismo di base (anche solo nei modi, non per forza nei temi) che non mi prende particolarmente però comunque sono forti quindi
OK
It's a decent album, but very overrated. A couple of standout songs. The production value is absolutely trash though. Not sure I agree with that correction
Still the best Beatle knock-off band out there.
Would be a 7/10 if I could rate it that way. As much as I adore some of the songs on this album, it can get a bit samey at times, and there’s two songs on here that I just don’t really like.
Legit one of the most essential albums ever and it has a lot of songs worth replaying along with their other album What’s The Story (Morning Glory) 7/10
Rating:★★★ Surprised me. Not bad at all. Most songs to me were nice to listen to and catchy. Nothing too crazy though.
eh
This was alright
Blir mange 3ere her nå, men dette er jo ikke så dårlig, bare ikke helt for meg.
I’ve never really gotten the Oasis hype. But they might be growing on me. This is decent.
I'm not a big fan of rock but I gotta admit this album was nice
it aight
Never been much of a fan.
Pretty good! Loved the bright guitars throughout, though the production feels muted and compressed in some songs. It also kind of dragged in the middle and the nasally drawn out vocal delivery isn't my cup of tea. Not gonna be a fave, but I enjoyed myself and can see why others love this band so much.
Great album
good but was not mindblown, but maybe my app couldnt play to all the songs since i dont have spotify premium
Very little offended me. Very little surprised or delighted me. Columbia seems like a poor man’s Three Strange Days.
Just not my thing. Objectively, but not subjectively good?
I like some songs. Extra point for city fans
Pretty okay album, not really an Oasis guy but Shakermaker was really good.
you can already hear the signature oasis sound in this record, however, felt dull and veryyy repetitive overall, my favorite on there was probably slide away - which sounds exactly like their later hits lol
Not as iconic as what’s the story but still has some good ones
definitely ok
Rock 'n' Roll Star- I can't understand the lyrics but I liked the music Shakermaker- again I liked the music but the voice annoyed me. Live forever- omg I know this song! This is so nostalgic. Wait this is actually good when not played by rock and pop club. Up in the sky- it was ok, kinda sounded like the others but good I guess. Columbia- I am revising while doing this so I'm not paying a lot of attention. It sounded like the rest but probably because I don't know them. It was also good/ok. Supersonic- interesting intro! Bring it on down- omg it also sounds the same but with a fancy intro. I've probably just not listened to enough oasis? I stopped giving my thoughts but I think I would've enjoyed a lot more when listening to songs individually, not as part of an album because they sounded the same to me because I don't know them.
I don't like britpop. I don't want to like Oasis. I was tapping my foot along to this record. My life is a lie.
La la la pew pew pew
It's a decent debut album, but I don't like the production. It all sounds a bit muddled and they sound like they are underwater in some songs. There are about 3 or 4 great songs here and you can hear the direction they are headed in.
возможно нужно сконцентрированно послушать, а возможно и раз меня на фоне не впечатлило, то и так тоже
A cool and decent album. Liked a few songs, but it’s too monotonous for me
Maybe... definitely. What I heard is not what I hear. It keeps me up at night.
oasis no interpela,solo acompaña
3,9/5
Solid listen for a debut album. Few standouts, but few bad songs.
A few very very nice songs. Many not bad, but didn’t excite me as much
classic rock, louis' inspiration
Very much what I was expecting from an Oasis album. Before today I have only heard their most famous songs and this album is similar in a lot of ways. Some pretty good songs mixed with many "meh" songs. Nothing I would search up or come back to in the future but not music I would skip either.
I can see why it was massive but it doesn't break new ground and Liams vocal style grates on me
Absolutely acceptable
Prefer Blur
Easy listening
it's a great album worth listening!!!
higher 3 for sure
Not my cup of tea but i can see the appeal
Wow. I was surprised by this. For all the Oasis haters, and me really only knowing Champaign Supernova, I was like they aren't worth my time checking out. But I'll tell you what, u thought this album was pretty decent! Good guitar tracks, nice bass, unique singing, mediocre at best drums. But it was a good listen.
Not very in depth but I liked it. Good alblum wouldn't binge listen to more than one alblum though
Chill vibes
Not bad.
Very medium
Decent album, not my favorite genre but enjoyed the listen
Have this on CD from back in high school. Notable for me in past 1994 lists. Have revisited Morning Glory more than this one in recent years. Rock n Roll Star is a strong start. I remember why this hit hard in the early 2000s when so much of my music taste was shaped by the 90s. Shakermaker is great! I forgot about this track. Gonna start a playlist of tracks that stick out from this listening journey. Live Forever brings back fun Rock Band memories. Each song here really is rollicking and infectious. What a strong debut record! At the same time, not something I would revisit top to bottom unless in a very specific context. Feels much more like something to play in the background for a 90s vibe than something to really spend time with and engage with deeply. Once you're halfway through the record, it feels a little repetitive. Cigarettes & Alcohol more annoying than I remember. Married With Children still great!
Live Forever // SuperSonic // Bring It On Down // Slide Away // 3.5/5
Great! I don't know that there are individual songs that stand out as much as some of the hits from Morning Glory but I think I liked listening to this album straight through more than I do Morning Glory.
I had nearly forgotten about this album because Oasis started to exist for me on their second album, as I imagine the case is for a lot of non-brits. I can say that their sound barely evolved from this, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. They captured a particular indie sound and vocal styling from the very beginning and I feel that barely deviating from that was ultimately a good thing for their career. I actually think their cover of the Stones "Cigarettes and Alcohol" might be better than the original, but I hate the Rolling Stones so maybe that's not as high praise as it sounds. Other than that, Supersonic might be my favorite. The lyrics in all of this are mostly irrelevant and there's no heartbreaking or hard partying stuff in any of this. It's not just far enough away from sounding bland that it has staying power. I dunno, I wasn't super impressed but I've never been super impressed by Oasis.
c’est un peu 10 fois de suite la même chanson mais c’est une super chanson
L'archétype de la poprock anglaise ? S'écoute sans y penser, sans s'y arrêter.
Oasis 1. I don’t like it. It reminds me of something an indie band would play in a movie. Not a fan. What I’m saying is it sounds like stock music. 2. I don’t care for it. Bad repetition. I actually do like the lyrics of the verses though. 3. I like this song. It reminds me of wonderwall but I don’t really like how they both have the screaming but maybe. I really like the lyrics and the singing in this song though. Definitely a banger. Wonderwall is by the same people btw. I like the way he says foreverrrrr. 4. I don’t like the lyrics where he asks how does it feel when you’re inside me then talks about feeling you inside me. Idk weird song it makes me uncomfy. 5. I liked it. It’s wee woo wee woo. It’s good I like the rhythm. I like the ending in correspondence to the first verse. 6. I like the rhymes its pretty good but the instrumental is not that interesting 7. Meh it was not really that good. I didnt like it. 8. Booooo meh too much repetition not good 9. Weird song about suduction with lasagna. Bu has 10. I really like this song it’s pretty fire. I like the beat and rhythm a lot. 11. I like this song. it’s chill.
I read the reviews before I listened, so my expectations may have been too high. I thought it was ok. Not really sure if I would listen to it again.
most of those songs same the sound as each other but the ones that are good are really catchy. really god awful voice though, not sure i'll ever get over that part. Fav tracks: Supersonic, Married With Children
Just an ok album.
I honestly don’t know how I feel about this. It’s mildly nostalgic for me, The brothers, as humans, irritate me, and their musical talent isn’t all there, but I can’t bring myself to hate it too much.
calm and chill
fuckin poethic
Defiantly maybe not a bad album. Possibly a mediocre one?
Pretty solid straight forward rock. Could easily throw this on in the background and almost anyone could enjoy it, which is great, but it doesn't lead to many songs that super memorable. There are standouts for sure like Slide Away, Live Forever, and Supersonic, but overall it switch things up enough to really sink its teeth in. Vocals fit the music well, but aren't much of a standout. 3/5
boring ;)
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? 🤔 Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
I don’t understand the take that this is better or even anywhere near as good as What’s the Story Morning Glory.
i have chosen this time to reveal that this is my *first* time listening to this album, even after knowing how beloved it is by brandon. i sorta get the hype, but it also feels like an album that Tom from (500) Days of Summer would be pretentious about other people not liking. i'm not sure what gives me that vibe. i like, but don't love, this album.
++: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Shakermaker, Columbia, Bring It On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Married with Children +: Up in the Sky, Supersonic, Digsy's Dinner +-: Slide Away -: Live Forever 7,7/10
Heard it many times. Lived through it. I like their second album more.
Good freshman outing?
Ok
Look, I don’t care for Oasis but I will say the first two albums are worthy of being on this list. Definitely Maybe was a moment in time. It felt kinda original without sounding original. This has all the singles you know well. It’s a little light outside of the hits but it was cool to listen to this for the first time in decades. The sound of a band with that world at their feet. Best: Columbia Worst: Married With Children
Meh
I enjoyed this album well enough, but not a whole lot jumped out to me as being particularly spectacular. I reckon it'd be a good road trip listen.
cool
0/11 bekannt 6/10 Beste Songs: shakermaker, supersonic, cigarettes & alcohol
Good
Not my favorite Oasis album, but definitely showed me something different.
Nice hits, supersonic and Live forever
I get it and I don't
nicfe
I enjoyed this debut rock/britpop album from Oasis! I like Oasis but I do feel as if they are a tad bit overrated. Maybe this is a case where they got better as time went on and they produced more albums and got more popular. They do have some great songs but they just feel very forgettable and meh to me at times. I liked this album but there are other rock albums that I would listen to before this in the future.
Hemm ja.
It's ok at times, even good, but equally annoying at others. I'll never understand the obsession.
Pretty good, rock vibes, more British than I usually listen to but I like it
Catching up on reviews: Le doy 3/5 a Definitely Maybe. Not that many songs caught my attention comparado con Morning Glory. Sounded repetitive at times. Si me gustaron mucho Up In The Sky, que tiene mucha energía y es como un modern take on that classic UK rock sound, y Married with Children.
Never been a big Oasis fan but it kicks off with some good energy and was enjoying it for the first three tracks. A few too many songs that blend into each other after that.
I'm not sure I've ever heard anything from this album besides their megahit "Live Forever" (that played for what felt like years on the radio) and the slightly less mega single "Supersonic", but it's hard to deny that every single one of the tracks on this album could only have been done by Oasis. It's gotten a bit tedious in the course of this collection to see so many references to Oasis as the supernova Britpop benchmark that countless bands tried and failed to chase, and there's a certain degree of "you had to be there" to explain why this band, and this album in particular, lit up the charts and the hearts of apparently music-starved Brits in the mid-90s. But despite the unfortunate wall of compression that makes it a bit hard to listen to in one go, as a debut album it's probably one of the most impressive ones in this collection. The Gallagher brothers and their henchman deliver on every single track and sound much more experienced than they were. I don't really understand why exactly they became lightning in a bottle for the UK, but it feels like a contemporary reviewer's description of the Oasis effect (quoted in the Wikipedia article for this album) probably explains it all: "it's like opening your bedroom curtains one morning and discovering that some f—er's built the Taj Mahal in your back garden and then filled it with your favourite flavour of Angel Delight." (Keith Cameron in NME) I think if that sentence and all the references makes sense to you, then you likely also ranked this album five stars and consider one of, if not *the* best albums of all time. (NME readers in 2006 ranked this #1 of all time, followed by "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"....) I feel a bit badly for only giving it three stars, but I know we'll be getting their sophomore effort, so I'm OK with slighting them a bit here (and hoping for better production quality on "(What's the Story) Morning Glory").
Likte dette! Ligger nok akkurat mellom 3 og 4. Runner ned på grunn av at dette er bandet som har laget Wonderwall og at Liam Gallagher er et rasshøl.
It was fine. A few good songs, nothing I’d really save but nothing that had me slamming the skip button like these brothers would slam each other.
It sounds exactly like everything from the early 2000s.....10 years early. Feels kind of washed out and bland today, but is still sneaky good when you really sit and pay attention to it.
Never a more appropriately named album for a band.
Strong 3
I've always liked this record, and it does have some bangers. I feel a bit jaded by it today, which might be a result of circumstance and general overexposure. I think it's probably still the best Oasis record.
Solid album, held up by the familiar singles.
I don't get the allure of Oasis. It sounds like Beatle era pop with grunge guitar.
Nothing special. Listenable rock. It occurs to me that someone could write speculative fiction about a world in which the brothers Gallagher had murdered each other before becoming famous, but then the only change in this world is that Oasis would not exist. Everything else would be the same, and no one would be aware of a giant void in their life.
Oueisissii. Siinähän se taas meni. Brittipoppii.
Mukava levy tämäkin. Vähän rouheampi ja hiomattomampi kun pykälää uudempi levy, mutta hyvin upposi
I'd first been introduced to Oasis through their second album and greatly enjoyed it, so I had some good expectations for this one too that were generally met. The songs here are generally just as good, but the production is simply awful; every instrument and voice is muffled by the others, to the point that is sounds like Liam is shouting more than singing just to be heard. This thing might as well have been released in mono...what a hackjob! It took me a whole week of listening, but I finally was able to cut through the muck and conclude that it's a fundamentally good record despite it all. I particularly enjoyed "Supersonic' and 'Bring It On Down'.
Love the sound, but only a couple songs stand out.
Great voice, competent playing, just nothing interesting behind it.
good songs. had s cool vibe, i could see myself listening on the beach or smth. not my fave tho.
Great music, songs are quite similar
Their first album Definately Maybe has great moments like Supersonic, Cigarettes and Alcohol, and Married With Children. My challenge with this album is that I know their next albums will see Oasis sharpening their writing and developing these ideas int better songwriting. For those who heard the album on first release it probably made a bigger impact.
Oasis write a good rock song - whether you dig it or not, I think it’s hard to deny it. Sometimes fun, sometimes rockin, sometimes reflective, but it doesn’t consistently grip me (though a few songs do). I can see how it’d sound fresh coming out of grunge, but now it sounds like pretty standard British pop rock music. Nothing wrong with it, even pleasant at times, but little to indicate it will become a DubsToasted standard.
i’d love to love oasis more they just have like one baseline sound most of the time
Absolute Britpop
Noel Gallagher: “Definitely Maybe was the last great punk album”. Steile These Noel
Pretty generic 90s easy-listening soft rock with several songs that go on much too long. But it does invoke a sense of nostalgia even though I did not grow up listening to this album. Its encapsulates the comforting feeling of 90s music which I miss.
el primer álbum q escucho d oasis, me gustaron mucho supersonic, columbia y rock'n'roll star. esta bueno pero tampoco se me hace tan increíble como leí q pusieron otros, capaz xq no soy un viejo q solo escucha britpop
Blur for ever
I'm a big Oasis head, so I was excited for this. On the current listen, this fell flat for me. Still had a great time, but fewer of the songs really popped like I expected them to. 3.5 stars, rounding down.
Lowkey vibing with this album. Whole album feels like the intro of a 2000’s teen coming of age movie. Possibly the best opening and closing tracks of all time. Fav song: married with children 3.4/5
Meh 2.5/5
I like it. If it came on the radio, I wouldn’t change it. If I’m in the mood for “I own at least one flannel and miss the 90s,” I’d throw it on intentionally.
Not my favourite of theirs, but quality rock
Maybe I’d like it better if I was a Brit. But it’s just generic to me.
This is better than I was expecting. Nothing revolutionary but solid album with a handful of bangers.
definitely maybe pretty good
So 90's. Dig it
not really my thing :/ i like pasis but no song really stuck out to me 🫤
Not my favourite Oasis album, but it features their distinctive muffled wall of sound and whining vocals. Best track on the album is "Live Forever". Surely, the guitar on "Cigarettes & Alcohol" has been copied from "Get It On" by T. Rex?
eh
Another band that I struggle to identify from the maisma of 1990s bands. Let's see if a dedicated listen helps me distinguish the reason they were big.
Some standout tracks like married with children and live forever obviously but a few misses like shakermaker that jus drags on too much, along with liams voice being irritating and sounding the same in every song he sings and Noel’s guitar solos being boring and slow I think 3 stars is about right
Definitely their best album?
Just don't really get Oasis. It's OK, but nothing special.
This was fine and I probably need to listen to it more. Nothing stood out a lot and there were a lot of rock albums this week.
Certainly heard some Beatles influence in some of the vocals (eg Digsy’s Diner). Thoroughly enjoyable listen.
oasis is just a little bit boring
When I wrote the review for What’s the Story (I gave it a 5), I mentioned I didn’t know any other Oasis material, so I was glad to see this pop up. This isn’t anywhere near as strong in my opinion, but it’s a decent building block as a debut album. I’m glad I listened to it so I know I can just stick to my one album by them and be happy.
This is the second album by Oasis that we’ve reviewed on this project and I’m in the same state of mind regarding the band as I was previously. They put out good solid rock music complete with strong beats, in-tune vocals that complement the songs well, and are above average in instrumentality. I just don’t get the cult following. Live Forever was the gem of this album and the other songs slide comfortably into second place. Not a bad listen (although I prefer Morning Glory over this album), it’s just table stakes for what I would expect an album on this list to be.
What I don’t understand about Oasis is how the derivative riffs, whining pointless lyrics and monstrous self-importance could have fooled anyone into thinking they were anything other than average at best. Yes, they wrote a few good 90s songs, but so did 3 Doors Down or The Cranberries, and nobody’s anointing them as the second coming. This album is boring, repetitive and forgettable.
Time has softened my view of bands I've disliked in the past. I've even turned the corner on some and have come to enjoy their music. Oasis is not one of those bands, in fact I dislike them even more today. This album is worse than the other Oasis album. Lame generic brit pop rock.
Love the heavy clingy guitar and drums. The lyrics and singing don’t do it for me
Типічний рок, класика в цьому жанрі але навлґряд повернусь до цього альбому
Previously unknown. I get it, but I started losing interest by the end.
It was good, not entirely my cup of tea tho
Fine, I guess. Not sure why it's held in such esteem, but nothing bad.
I feel like every song sounded the same
5/10 This was always going to be a tough one for me. Oasis have never been my thing, but as with any album, I always do my best to go in with an open mind. There are some decent enough songs on here, actually. Nothing particularly spectacular, but passable pop-rock songs that would sit well in the songbook of many half-decent mainstream rock band of the time. Unfortunately, they’re often compromised by Liam Gallagher’s voice, which nasally drawls and drones over the top of it all, prioritising attitude over musical skill. That obviously works for some, but for me, it’s always come across as pretty unlikeable and this full listen of the album hasn’t done a lot to change my mind. Weirdly, his vocal style is actually fairly inconsistent, and in places isn’t actually too bad, but that doesn’t particularly help with the flow and consistency of the album to my ears. The songs themselves are often pretty simple compositions, but are, in most instances fairly well put together, performed and produced. You can definitely hear that this is a debut album, as there are weak areas where things go a little underdeveloped, and there are times when basic ideas are dragged on for too long, but for the most part, things aren’t bad. I think the thing that really gets me about this record, and Oasis in general, is that it actually, vocals excepted, sounds pretty generic and doesn’t stand out from among the crowd. I kind of feel, as mentioned in my song by song, that if you removed Liam and replaced him with another singer, most of these tracks could have been by one of any number of britpop bands that were around at the time. I’ve heard a theory that Oasis became as big as they did because the Stone Roses, in their failure to follow up their debut album in a timely manner, left a massive vacuum for a northern, attitude edged rock band to fill and that Oasis were the first to fit the bill, which kind of makes sense. As for this album, I think it more or less met my expectations. It wasn’t terrible, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is still pretty middle of the road and in no way worthy of being as highly rated as it is. Awful? No. Over-rated? Massively. For me? Again, no. Rock 'N' Roll Star - This is a decent enough rock and roll based number. Liam’s voice is quite irritating, the way he slurs and drawls over everything, but underneath that, it’s not bad. It’s a fairly by the numbers rock song that doesn’t do anything vastly interesting or innovative, but does what it does fairly well. Unfortunately, it’s also a half-decent three minute rocker that drags on for five and a half minutes. It feels like they’re trying to be ‘experimental at the end, but it’s pretty unconvincing. Shakermaker - An uncredited take-off of a Coca-Cola advertising jingle? Ok then. It’s slow, plodding, unoriginal and boring. And then we have to listen to Liam's awful slurring vocals droning on (and on and on) over the top. The pace is all wrong, the composition is basic and boring and it drags on for over five minutes! What a load of old rubbish. Live Forever - Ah, one of the big singles. It’s got one of the most unconvincing transitions to falsetto that I can recall. It’s pretty basic, particularly the guitar solo, but it’s not a bad little song really. Liam continues to be the worst thing about the band, but other than that, this is a decent entry into the brit-pop/indie songbook of the 90s. It’s instrumentally well performed, has some decent melodic hooks and captures the sound of 90s British rock well. That said, listening to this, I don’t really get why this has is any better than other contemporary bands. Up In The Sky - This isn’t that bad, it’s got a fairly repetitive riff that drags on a bit too much, but it’s got decent pace. When Liam isn’t unnecessarily dragging out his vowels, he's far less annoying, and he perhaps does it less here. I can’t believe they dragged this riff out for as long as they have though. Columbia - This is another by the numbers indie rock number. As with the rest of the album thus far, it’s largely competently performed and produced, but it doesn’t really offer anything that elevates it above being a decent album track from one of any number of bands of the time. Swap out the singer and tell me this is a Space, Dodgy or Supergrass track and I’d fully believe you. It’s not particularly exciting, but it’s decent enough. Supersonic - I’m not one to hook on to lyrics particularly often, only ever really latching onto lyrical content with songs that I've listened to a lot of times. But the lyrics here stuck out as being particularly poor. Lazy rhyming that sounds like the last minute poetry homework of an unengaged teenager. It’s a slow, fairly ponderous song with some decent elements of sound design in there, but it’s pretty slow to do anything. There’s at least a bit of range between sections, but it does become pretty repetitive. Bring It On Down - This has a nice rolling start that leads into something with really good pace and drive. The drawling singing drags away some of the momentum though. With a sharp, staccato vocal, this could have worked a lot better. Some nice guitar playing in here and the drumming is solid too. Unfortunately, it never really develops particularly far and it’s all pretty dynamically flat, but it’s still pretty decent. Cigarettes & Alcohol - Ah, Bang a Gong by T-Rex, but if you strip it of all its charm away and get an annoying prick to whinge over the top of it. It’s very splashy and cluttered in the highs in the mix which makes it a little tough on the ears. And good god, Liam’s vocal delivery is just atrocious. It eschews timing and tightness for ‘attitude’, but that attitude is of someone threateningly asking you for a quid so they can get the bus. Digsy's Dinner - This is better. It’s got a bit of rhythmic range and dynamism to it and Liam is reigning in his more irritating tendencies. Not convinced by that piano solo though. Sheesh. It all becomes a bit of a wash after a while though and then it’s done. Again, sounds like a decent but not standout track from any number of bands of the time. Slide Away - This is another by the numbers pop-rock composition. It’s pretty one-paced, but it’s not too bad. It’s got a decent amount of musical swagger to it and there are some decent bits of instrumental work in there. And then it drags on for 6 minutes, which is just way too long. Especially the two separate bits where he relentlessly sings “slide away”. Married With Children - This sounds a lot like Blur. It’s pretty good actually. Liam’s voice is a little on the nasal side, but it’s got less of the annoying drawling. It’s nice and stripped back and doesn’t overdo things and while it’s a pretty simple composition, what it does, it does right and then doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Did not do enough for me. Songs were a bit samey. Wouldn't revisit this over other albums in the genre.
I mean really? before I die?
Pretty one paced. Gets a nostalgia round up even though all the hits are elsewhere.
Now this is proper Brit pop, but still doesn’t really grab me where it grabs some, or so I hear…
Liked it mote than I thought I would. Still not a fan of Liam Gallagher’s voice.
Born to be cool, obligated to hear oasis. Muito chatinho, exceto live forever. 3/5 porque é o trabalho dos caras.
This came up after the other oasis album. It's almost as good and precedes the other oasis album. I'd say you should listen to it but I reckon on its own it's a 3.
First time I’ve ever listened to an oasis album. Obviously familiar with their mega hits, but this was not what I got from this album. I can hear where greatness comes later, but honestly this album was pretty meh. The vocal melodies were boring and followed the chords a lot and the songs were forgettable. It was a good vibe and I like the production, layered guitars and the “live” feel about it. I’ll bet it was awesome in pubs in the UK at the time. Hoping the next album is more impressive.
Its okay, not offensive andor anything particulary wrong with it, it just didnt stick for me. If someone said they really loved this album i could understand. Just not for me.
Can't say I particularly enjoyed it. I found the vocals quite whiny, which is a staple of 90s british rock. Some of the guitar work was pretty good, but most of it did feel quite the same, except for cigarettes and alcohol none of the songs really stood out to me. 6.5/10
I was honestly expecting to dislike this but it was pretty engaging, though a bit long and the tracks blended together a bit. All around not bad at all. 3/5
Sounds good but it's aaaaall so similar?
Definitely an Oasis album
The "lesser" of the Oasis albums really felt that way. A couple of bangers, but overall it lacked the pizzazz of What's the Story...
Wel leuk, maar niet helemaal mijn ding
The intros to almost every song in the first half sound like things that came before, but that familiarity probably isn't viewed as a bad thing. On the other hand, it's definitely RAWK MUSIC, but different than what came before it. Ah, dichotomies. Fun listen mostly.
Feel like the radio hits (Live Forever, Supersonic) didn't hit as hard as the ones that were a little fresher. Not sure I was psyched on anything as much as Rock 'n Roll Star for the rest of the album, which is always a disappointing feeling, kind of expected just one more song to really blow me away somewhere deeper down the tracklist.
Outside of a few tracks I've never heard any of this album. And yet, I've heard this all before. I'm not hearing the "new sound" that initial reviews are so excited for. And whatever the "grunge had died with Kurt Cobain" from JK in 1001 sentiment is crazy. Maybe he was right that the musical landscape in the UK was "barren." I know Oasis despite (or because of) the turbulent relationship of the Gallagher brothers can crank out some hits. I'm just not hearing it yet. Live Forever Married With Children
Music's shite, keeps me up al night
I definitely maybe remember when this came out and they were making noise within the music lovers community. I didn't get into the disc or the band at the time, so this is my first time listening to the entire album. I vividly remember "Live Forever" getting a lot of airplay, it's a good track but nothing that deserved the hype it got at the time. "Supersonic" is the second most popular track, I have never heard that on American radio, same goes for "Cigarettes & Alcohol", another 100M track. Solid listening counts for all 11 songs, the weakest has over 25M and the most popular hs over 400M. Almost all of their songs could be 1 minute shorter and remove a chorus or two (see "Slide Away"!). In hindsight I understand why I didn't get into them. It seems self indulgent at times, boring at others, wall of sound with no breaks, repetitive with forced hooks, too Brit pop for me. "Shakermaker", "Digsy's Baby", "Up In The Sky" and "Columbia" are weak songs. The average outweighs the good on this one. One dimensional band. You had to grow up in England to really dig this one. It hard to give this more than 2.5 stars, but I'll round up since apparently it strikes a chord with the Brits for whatever reason. Not quite shite they might say.
A little disappointing. Considering Oasis' cultural impact, I would have expected something that leaves a stronger impression upon me. There's nothing wrong with it.
It’s aight. Not better than Morning Glory
Very Oasis Fave song: live forever
I liked the end of Columbia, but the rest of the album was all a bit too samey.
Very disappointing. 2.5 rounding up.
I wouldn’t put any song on on my own but if a song of this album played, I probably wouldn’t skip it. Was a bit too rocky for me
live forever 1994 united kingdom britpop
I really enjoyed this album, not my usual style of music but they hit it good. My only gripe with this album that really annoyed me is his voice gets pretty whiny sometimes which I despise, and specifically the one song "Slide Away" where he sings the words "Slide Away" like 20 times for about a minute and a half. Awful choice on that part. Solid 3/5 for me because of that.
This album was one of my first interesting album journeys. “Married with children” already was one of my very very favorite songs, so I was already keen to hear the full list. At the beginning it was hard for me to keep up, it was nothing particularly interesting. But I was hooked on from Columbia. Bring It On Down was a total mind blown! I loved the guitar solo sooo much. I also very much liked Digsy’s Dinner. And the finishing with “Married with children” is a chef’s kiss. I love that beautiful song so much.
Oasis sounds BIG. Big hooks, big production; I can totally understand why people thought they would be the next Beatles. Unfortunately, I greatly dislike the Beatles. The lyrics can come off pretty trite, but the power of Liam Gallagher's delivery can make you forget that at times. The music itself can sound a little manufactured, too, but the combination of everything comes together in an unexpectedly charming package. Still, the trick kind of relies on the listener's lack of deep listening. This is the sound of a band succeeding despite themselves. They do have a good sound, the 90's production really does things for me, and overall, I found myself enjoying Definitely Maybe. I'm not a new Oasis fan or anything, and I probably won't put this on again anytime soon, but in the span of the record, they kinda won me over. Highlights: "Up in the Sky", "Columbia"
Ja ik vind het alright maar zeker niet geweldig. Prima album
Leuk. Prima rockliedjes. Ik kan me voorstellen dat dit kan werken in een arena vol dronken Britten. Live Forever is een grote highlight.
Pretty alright I guess.
Live forever increíble
#52 Not bad
already had a few songs saved but this is a pretty awesome album. objectively good but some of it is sorta forgettable i think.
Lound and dumb and fun. Very pop and still a bit unhinged
I kept getting distracted by all the other songs jumping out at me between the guitar lines.
a weaker effort in their catalog, but live forever is an all timer.
i just finished watching derry girls so i feel like this got a more generous listen than it would have otherwise
Hey: That Sure is Oasis, vol. 3
3/5 6/10 Couple of classics solid album just not great
Okay, I listened to part of it and thought it was pretty good. But, I didn’t finish because I have been getting so many rock albums that i’m not feeling a ton haha.
Not my normal music but had some good songs. the songs also had good "music" behind it. the beats were fun on some of the songs as well.
Liked Live Forever, rated 3/5
Not the best people, but a solid album throughout
Decent I spose
My top songs from this album in no particular order are: Up In The Sky Columbia Married With Children
Dude's voice becomes a tiresome bore after a few songs.
At times I really liked his voice and in some songs, I didn’t. But overall it was a good album.
Alright
Am I wrong to say that much of their success was how hot these two brothers were?
Good rock album. Not a huge fan of oasis.
I loved the lyrics but I enjoyed the sound more than anything else.
sunshyine everything blended together after a while 3/5
Solid
I think the title here is correct. Definitely maybe. Artful noise, much better than the singles I've heard from this band, not sure I would revisit, though.
I know this is supposed to be one of their best but it only has a few songs that are actually worth it. It's not a bad listen overall.
It’s ok, maybe because of how famous they are it feels kinda basic
My first time listening to Oasis. I've seen Oasis vs Radiohead convos online and now I can say Radiohead clears. The singer sounds like his he sings with his mouth wide open. Solid album. (Your music's shite/it keeps me up all night)
Oasis is one of those bands that most people either love or hate. I just don't think about them that hard. I've heard them plenty - we had a few fans at the record store back when this came out. They've never clicked with me, but I've never really disliked their stuff either. It's an album done by a talented bunch, but it's nothing more than that to my ears.
Little underwhelmed on this one
Passar ganska bra en grå och mörk decembermorgon som är alldeles för varm. Bästa låtar: Live forever Supersonic Bring it on down
Greatguitar, nostalgic music. Singing got repeatitive in some songs. Columbia is a favourite.
A few really good songs then one song repeated throughout essentially.
I loved this back in the day but I was largely put off as their fame and egos grew. If I take the album in isolation, there’s still a lot to like, maybe that is in part due to my familiarity, but I found myself enjoying this more than my grumpy self would like to admit. Perhaps what is remarkable, is that the album tracks perhaps aren’t quite as good as I remembered, whilst the well known singles carry this, with the exception of Columbia, which I enjoyed the most today. Many tracks have been overplayed and that does colour my enjoyment, even if in parts they exceed my expectations. My initial reaction when I pressed play was feeling underwhelmed, I expected it to sound bigger and fuller than it did, although that feeling somewhat dissipated as I worked my way through. What I dislike about this album is just how derivative it is, and I know it wears that as a badge of honour, but if I want to listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or T-Rex, then I will. The Gallagher brothers will always sour it for me, if I think hard enough about them I can see my rating dropping in front of my eyes. It’s far from perfect but it hugely defined a large section of British culture in the 90s and beyond, it probably deserves 4 stars but Noel shouldn’t be an insufferable prick.
Within 5 days, 3 Britpop bands - wow. OK, now having listened to The Boo Radleys three days ago and Blur's self-titled album 5 days ago, I can't say I'm equally impressed with this Oasis album. Never was a big fan of them either - too much of that laddish-cheerful-drunk-sing-along quality in their songs for my liking - and this (debut) album of theirs doesn't change my opinion much. Yeah, there are some good songs on it, and I liked the raw energy that their later albums would lack, but it's still a bit mediocre compared to the aforementioned bands. 3/5
Eh, not their best. Well it might be, I haven't heard the second one either. Surprisingly bland. A lot of bad tracks on here. 3 Heard before? Yes most of it Owned: No: 37/142 (26%) Will I get? No
3 stars I always play this album expecting it to be the time I see what the fuss is all about. This album is beloved by some, voted as the best album of all time but some people in NME I think? But that’s laughable! Not because it’s bad, but because it clearly isn’t better than so many albums! There are some good, even great songs on this album. But there is so much generic boring stuff too and I never feel like getting through the whole thing. Their follow up was much better in my opinion, and then like most Americans I know nothing of their work post-1997. But this album is definitely maybe just fine.
1. I thought I'd like it more than I did, but I love ''Married with Children''. I'll give another try soon
Good! No tracks *really* stuck with me, but none of them I found grating or boring. Will definitely come back and reappraise
Man, I'm gonna get hate for not liking these boys. I think their pretty mediocre. Don't even know why they are the most famous Brit Rock outlet. Sure I enjoy some songs. She's Electric and Some Might Say are even personal favorites, but as a whole, I don't find Oasis that interesting. Their debut didn't convince me otherwise. Has some nice songs, has some filler. Has some inventive moments, has some boring ones too.
3 out of 5. After finally listening past their singles I think I see why Oasis gets as much love as they do.
Some killer some filler
Funny how debut albums have lots for energy and this is no exception by Oasis. Definitely one of their best, well maybe.
It was okay, but I found it kind of boring.
it was okay i liked it
It’s fine
Unremarkable brit pop
This is the debut album from these British guys. Almost all the tracks are hard rock in my opinion. It’s fine for a debut album, although nothing here is memorable. I recall the band members getting into a lot of fights back then, but I suppose that’s not uncommon for rock bands.
Despite the charming double epistemic adverb title, I'm not that excited about another Oasis album. I feel I've already heard Oasis and therefore this album, being very similar (yet somehow louder and worse) to the last one, isn't anything I need to hear. Then again, if I were making this list, it'd be like: 10 Magnetic Fields albums, 5 Tool, 5 Placebo*, 25 musical cast recordings, 5 beethovens, and then a frantic panic to think up 950 other albums. So I guess I shouldn't be too judgmental until I make my own list of 1001 albums I like better (which will happen on its own if both I and the user album list persist long enough, anyway). Long story short I definitely maybe am not excited by this. 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' just made me want to hear 'Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk' by Rufus instead. I considered giving this a 2 because it made my ears ring, but the title saved it. *Placebo have a song called 'Plasticine', and 'Shakermaker' from this album mentions plasticine, so I finally looked it up. It's a British brand of kids' modelling clay. Never would have guessed that in a million years. Sounds like an adjective!! Anthrocene... plasticine... langoustine...
Brings me back to listening to new music with the football boys
I'd probably like it more but it wasn't the vibe I needed atm. I do like Rock n Roll star. 4/5 would need to relisten
this is pretty inoffensive but I just did not find the highs to be there in the way that they are on what’s the story morning glory.
I guess you had to be there with Oasis. They're a pleasant enough band and I tap my toe to enough of these songs that it makes for a decent listening experience but none of these songs strike me as particularly memorable 30 years on.
Couple of classic songs but not a classic.
This was good - it actually took me a few songs to get into it. Some of the songs were a bit overlong for what they were but mostly very good and enjoyable. I don’t know how much I would return to this but I still enjoyed it.
The title is too fitting tbh.
this sure was another Oasis album
Mid
It's not clever & it's not pretty but it does what it says on the tin. A whole album of effectively the same song. But like, that one song is alright. You can listen to it. I think a lot of Oasis’ clout nowadays is fuelled by nostalgia from football fans 6 / 10 Best track/s Supersonic, Live Forever
Meh
I had to look up "shambolic" to be sure it meant what I thought it did and yes, it describes Oasis perfectly. This album is messy and chaotic, but it has a few good songs (I would appreciate a Gallagher-free cover of Live Forever)-- the rocking songs really rock and the ballads are unlistenable. I guess it demonstrates promise, I'm not sure of what.
Starts strong, ends a bit boring. Since they've reunited Oasis have been treated like the second coming of Jesus himself, but that doesn't obscure that their music was oftentimes mediocre. Perhaps it's more that they're a snapshot of a place and time (Britpop and Britain in the 90s) that a lot of people miss and would like to go back to. Nostalgia is an ugly business with a very rosy lens. Still, pretty enjoyable first half.
I’m sure it made an impact for some people. I’m not that person.
Oasis songs don’t necessarily all sound the same, but they approach each track with the same energy and attitude. So much so that you could certainly be forgiven for thinking you’ve heard some of these tunes before on their bigger hits. It’s a winning formula, sure, but that’s exactly what these songs are: formulaic. In any case, I do appreciate that Oasis ‘sound’ and the confident execution on this album. ✨
Não é o mais memorável, mas é Oasis! Resumindo, sempre gostoso demais ouvir o Abel e Caim do rock.
I honestly have no idea what to say about this album. I guess it's.. Fine? While listening I discovered that I had heard many songs before but I would never be able to think of any from the top of my head. This examplifies my feelings about this album quite well probably. Recognisable but not memorable. I'd definitely like this album more if I heard it during my formative years but it doesn't hit that hard for me now
Pretty nice listen, although Oasis also just sounds a bit cheesy somehow it is still entertaining. Really big 90s vibe, feels pretty nostalgic. Favourite song: SuperSonic, least favourite: Rock & Roll Star (not a great start in my opinion). 3.5 stars.
Alright
Gentle. Not overpowering.
significantly better than I expected
Oasis might not be the best band out there and other Britpop bands were also better (Pulp!). But this is a solid album with some good tunes that capture an era. That's not nothing, eh?
Oh for goodness sake.
Todas las canciones se parecen demasiado. La voz se me hace un poco cansina. Por temas sentimentales subo una estrella.
90s british rock. Sounds the same but cool
some of these work if they were 2 minutes shorter. not bad tho.
3.5
3.0
Liked this album more than I thought I would. Was never a huge fan, but I felt like this album was a little more straight ahead rock - which I liked
Really indifferent towards this one, was hoping I'd enjoy it a lot more since I love The Smiths and The Stone Roses. 6/10 Favourite track: Married With Children
Ma quindi i fratelli Gallagher sanno fare anche musica oltre ad odiarsi. E non è neanche male.
Solid listen. I feel like I'm writing this a lot, but 3/5 in my scale basically means "happy to listen to the album, but wouldn't explicitly seek it out to play" and that covers a lot of the spectrum.
This album did not really push the envelope or innovate in any way, particularly when compared to other albums coming out around this time period. But I found my self tapping my foot along to the beat throughout the listen. Pretty generic and derivative rock, but very listenable and palatable. There are certainly worse albums out there.
As an Oasis skeptic, this surprised me. Not enough to rave about it but it was a pleasant enough listen.
The songs everyone knows are great but there's a decent amount of filler. 6/10
Plain and boring. Good as a background music. fav song: supersonic worst: columbia, digsy’s dinner
the Beatles meets Green Day. not bad not great
listened to this album, a lot of fillers, but indeed some bangers
So I generally quite like Oasis, I just think this didn't quite get past the level of "pretty good rock album" for me. If I could give it a 3.5 I would, don't think it's quite a 4 though. IMO the only truly great song from their catalog that shows up here is Live Forever (honorable mention for Slide Away and Supersonic). The opener is pretty rip-roaring as well, but the album overall just doesn't hit anywhere close to Morning Glory as a whole for me. Nothing wrong with it at all and probably a generally decent debut all things considered but just placing this one in context for me, it's much less of a standout.
It's a review from a fan of electronic music. Paused listening to the album on Bring it Down because I was quite overwhelmed with the energy. But decided to finish the album. It's a nice album! The music feels genuine, and I liked the melodies. Some backing vocals impressed me! But I'm not sure that I would listen to the album one more time. Now I can clearly see that Oasis influenced Kasabian, which is the rock band I like (and they are more electronic too). It's a solid 3 for me only because I won't listen to it one more time.
i liked this less than i thought i would. good album cover
A little more rock heavy than their proceeding album but still very nice. 3.5
Not really my kinda music, the hits on this album are great but the rest is kinda just filler
Двойственные ощущения. Не знал какую оценку поставить.
An hour long song. Better than the Beatles. Gum chewer. Rose Bowl.
I wouldn't call myself a fan of Oasis (or the subculture that surrounds them as an entity) by any means, and Liam Gallagher's whining does cut through me somewhat, however I can recognise that this has got some cracking tunes on it. It's the only album of theirs I've ever got on with, as it feels that bit more scrappy (in relative terms) with a stronger emphasis towards shoegaze and that swirling style of riffage, which became lost to some degree on the follow up. It's not something I'd ever actively seek out, but over a few beverages in a beer garden in the summer, you could do a lot worse.
Fine record here. I’ve never really understood the appeal of Oasis, they’re a fairly boring and by the numbers band with only about 3 songs I actually care about. “Live Forever” is excellent but every other track here is fairly normal alt rock/britpop of the 90s. Also the production on Oasis records pisses me off because they’re mixed to be so loud that the music is lost in the noise and that’s not pleasant especially if you weren’t huge into the music to begin with. Plus Noel Gallagher is a dick, they both are but Noel having the audacity to act as if he’s better than Lennon is insane, his music isn’t even on the same continent as Lennon’s let alone better
For the record, I spotted the "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke" melody on "Shakermaker" before I read that Oasis had to pay Coca-Cola for using it. You will simply have to take my word on this. Then I listened to more of Definitely Maybe and I thought, 'Is that T. Rex or The Clash or [other artist]?' Noel Gallagher must be a fleshy musical computer with a knack for anthemic hooks. The fact that he interpolated from some of my favorite artists--besides Coke--makes the music on Definitely Maybe quite listenable. However, I am in the 'his brother is a nasally, whiny wanker' camp so the vocals wear on me. I give it one and a half yin and one and a half yang.
quite long and havent had the chance to go through everything yet. wasn't bad, but not like their other album with Hello and Roll With It
Important 90's Britrock album. It's just not for me fav. tracks: Live Forever, Columbia, Supersonic, Slide Away
I'll never like the vocals.
If you were a teenager when this came out, it's the best thing you've ever heard. I was more of the Arctic Monkeys generation, but still think Brit indie is all a bit shit.
It’s not horrible, but I didn’t get the hype when I was 14. I still don’t get the hype when I’m 45. A few songs have good, sing-song friendly choruses, but a lot of bands have achieved that. A typical 3/5 rating for me.
