One of the best debut albums.
Call it recency bias but I just saw them play in The USA for the first time in 17 years and it was excellent. This is coming from someone who has never really appreciated their secondary work short of the BIG songs, and while I do enjoy those of course there is more below the surface. The concert helped me appreciate them more, but this album took it to the next level. These songs are so much more raw and just as powerful and WTSMG. The rock licks are heavy and the tone is muddy but distinguished. Both Liam and Noel are in sync. I connected with this album much more than the totality of their next, which is a surprise considering the impact of the second album. I’m actually an Oasis fan now.

If I put aside my feelings about the band and their fans, it's really good. Doesn't feel that ground breaking when you listen to it now but hearing it for the first time will have been sick. Isn't special enough for 5 stars but it's a great album.
So surprised by that album honestly. The riffs are great, lip is actually a really interesting vocalist. His voice is raspy but also so unique. I always heard they were a cardboard copy of the beatles. But, being a huge beatles fan, i don't hear it outside of some influences here and there. in conclusion this album is awesome. My stand outs are definitely slide away, up in the sky and cigarettes and alcohol

Best oasis album period.
If you can get past the over-singing and the often inane lyrics, this is an enjoyable heart-on-its-sleeve rock album. When I can get past those things, like on "Slide Away" (the best song) or "Live Forever" (the best hooks, even if I hate how the lyrics react to Cobain and his music), I'm right there in the pit singing along. When I can't, like on "Shakermaker" (with it's clunky melody) or "Supersonic" (the worst lyrics of the bunch), it can get a bit tiring. This is right on the edge of a 2 and a 3 for me as an album full of brash songs that are almost too much to take in all in a row. The guitars sound great, but they're so loud the songs have very little room to breathe. It doesn't help that some of them, like the opener, go on for way too long. In the end I can't get past the lack of depth and loudness, though I can't deny it's catchy.
Maybe not as good as the second album but it has great songs and reminds me of my college years when I was deep into britpop. 4.6 stars

If you were seeing Oasis live at this time, you were seeing the best band in the world - for the simple reason that they believed it. Fuck the snobs, this is still a bangin album. Its not big or clever but it doesnt have to be. Every song is an anthem and I still know all the words.
Solid seven out of 10 album. Nothing was particularly interesting, but it was pretty good. I’d only ever heard Wonderwall, so it was good to hear more oasis.

Early 90’s indie/alt rock. Theres a bit of a punk sensibility mixed in here too with the vocal delivery at times and the call backs to classic 60’s rock. Notables songs include Rock N Roll Star, Live Forever, Up in the Sky, Columbia, Supersonic, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Slide Away, Married With Children.
Had never actually listened to the whole thing. I am a 90s teen so definitely maybe knew most of their songs... Sorta repetitive, cool music.

I like the song Live Forever, and Married With Children is pretty good, but that’s it. The rest of the album just doesn’t do it for me. Not the worst album I’ve ever heard but far from the best and honestly just very forgettable. Already forgot what the two songs I did kinda like sounded like. Ha
Great from front to back. Although I think they really perfected their sound on their next release. This is great in it's own regard though.
Enjoyable, some singable hits on here. I've always liked oasis but never got there global success. I think they are very inoffensive. A lot like pesto pasta, there's nothing wrong with it, it since, but you wouldn't mind something more.

It’s a classic
I’ve never understood the Oasis hype. They are fine, but what it really is is some decent guitar rock with nasal vocals. Their hype was always better than their music, and it’s confusing when people describe this as “generation-defining” work. I hope not. For me, it was just a part of the post-grunge mediocrity.
Als kind, want dat was ik toen dit uitkwam, vond ik het altijd maar aanstellers. Wat ik er van meekreeg dan. Ik denk dat dat ten tijde van dit album nog niet zo heel veel was. Ik moet dus ook toegeven dat ik van dit album geen enkele titel herken. Ik kon dit toen nog niet zelf opzoeken en later in m'n leven had ik eigenlijk weinig interesse hierin. Ik moet toegeven dat de enorme hoeveelheid galm in combinatie met veel langgerekte lettergrepen me flink wat batterij kosten, maar desondanks vind ik het anno nu wel toffe muziek. Met name "Supersonic" vind ik lekker. Deze krijgt dan ook 4 sterren. Ik hou de 5e ster op zak voor het andere album, want die vind ik toch leuker.

Better than Coldplay
Ya it was alright. Oasis I mean, like, yeah. It was Oasis, they have 3-4 songs i really like and then everything else sounds the same.
A couple of ok songs, but it was mostly just boring.
I generally don’t like Oasis, they are supposed to be anthemic but if I want anthems I would go to Alarm, Big Country and U2. I think they were part of that whole Britpop debacle and the artists I liked during that mad time didn’t really fit into that genre so it passed me by. Having said that, I have had a look and the songs I find okay of theirs are on their What’s the Story Morning Glory album (little nod to Nilsson there) and so I will wait for that album, which I am prettttty sure is on here to make up my mind.
The entire album sounded like one song
The only Oasis song I had previously heard was “Rock and Roll Star.” My favorite music was in “Columbia” and “Bring it all Down.” Favorite lyrics were in “Married With Children.”
Apart from the final track, it sounded like one long song. Still enjoyable, though.
One listen all the way through was enough. It reminds me of the rock of my youth, which is impressive to see both the mix of their influences, and their influence on a lot of the mainstream acts of the 90s and 00s— I can give it points for that. Otherwise, it's just too easy for me to leave in the background. 2.3/5
Let's get the joke out of the way first. I went to a fight and it was ruined by having an Oasis show break out. I kid I was never blessed enough to see Oasis live. I was 14 when this came out and was squarely in the prog metal and metal camp at that age. I had just found Undertow and listened to it so much the tape broke. I definitely remember Live Forever an Supersonic playing on the 'alternative' radio station in the town I grew up in. Next to Blur, in my opinion, for the greatest Brit Pop band out there.

Shoegazey but in not a good way. Why write lyrics if you aren’t going to say them clearly? Anyway I think I disliked this more than I expected
An absolute classic album. I’d forgotten how much Oasis just *arrived*, fully formed. So close to being my first 5 star album… but the back half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first (still don’t like Columbia, it’s about 3 hours too long).
Good, but not polished and catchy yet.
Raw aggressive rock and roll, too loud, too many guitars - brilliant!! Hasn’t lost any of its impact 30 years plus since I first bought it on the week of release. Slide Away is maybe the best track? Even the acoustic coda has bite - “yer music’s shite, it keeps me up all night”! One of the all time great debut albums.
I just don't like Oasis.
Maybe it's just the reunion tour talking but if they aren't the World's Greatest Stadium Rock Band then the list of competitors is short. (Journey? KISS? Queen?) They're certainly the best of their era in any event. Transcendence like this wasn't supposed to be possible anymore by the 90s; it sure as shit isn't still supposed to be possible now, and yet here we are.
A rare record where nearly every song is strong enough to be a single. Catchy and often irreverent, the kind of boundless "eh don't worry about it" joy that has lead so many to believe that things aren't what they use to be. I think if released today this wouldn't stand a chance, but it came out at just the right time to wash away all the miserable american music and renew british peoples love of not thinking deeply about anything. The music itself is fine, songs are well written and produced, again most of them are catchy. I don't think theres a single dud here, infact the only songs I don't think are great are Columbia and Bring It On Down. Rock 'n' Roll Star is a great opener, super catchy and great progression throughout the song into the murky and hypnotic ending. Shakermaker is one of my favourite Oasis songs, stupid as fuck but catchy enough to find yourself enjoying it. Live Forever just a classic great song, not much else to say, first guitar solo I ever learned. Up in the Sky again just a great dancey rock song. Skip along to Supersonic, great mid tempo riffs into a really nice major chorus. Cigarettes & Alcohol is one of the more blatant rip offs being lifted straight from T Rex's Get It On. And yet I prefer this, I don't know if its the bleak Sex Pistols esque verses but theres something so uplifting and nihilistic about them, its such a funny juxtaposition but it works so well. Digsy's Dinner is just pure dumb fun, the drawn out way he sings lasagna is hilarious but I don't think anyone else could make it work. Slide Away another great mid tempo rock classic. Married with Children is a great closer, love the one take tape feel to this song, really gets the mood and the writing is top tier Oasis. I am loathe to say it but this is a great album, not quite a 10/10 but almost definitely a 9.5.

Better than Wonderwall, and that's all that matters. I haven't listened to (What's The Story) Morning Glory? yet, and I imagine it's as good as this – but thank the gods, at least this record doesn't force me to listen to Wonderwall again. Instead, it forces me to listen to various chunks of muddy nonsensical goodness with an aggressively basic classic-rock sound. Really pours one out to all the 70s music nerds who became depressed after the rise of punk, Britpop, grunge, disco, and whatever the heck was going on with synths in the 80s. Up In The Sky, Bring It On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, and of course Rock 'n' Roll Star are all essentially semi-alt renditions of a sound dating all the way back to the late 60s. We hear elements of CCR, the Doors, the Who, the Eagles, and everyone in between. And the Beatles (can't forget them). Plus Liam Gallagher's silly nasally little voice. Even though attitude and political messaging has its place in music, particularly that of the early/mid 90s, I have a soft spot for artists that toss all that aside in favour of a happy, carefree sound with (judging by the reviews) relatively empty lyricism. You can tell this from the song titles alone, and the simple yet bombastic sound (I-VIIb-IV progressions, slightly distorted guitars, good drumming, the whole shabang) only serves to bolster this view. As another reviewer wrote (and I agree with): "A vastly different facet of Britpop that cared less about post-punk/new wave reminiscing and more about pummeling, piledriving good old fashioned rock and roll, Oasis were ready to pick up a new baton for those who were more inclined to having a good time and forgetting your ills." 4/5 Key tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic
It's still a superb album - some of the other Oasis ones haven't survived the passage of time quite as well but this one is a veritable classic.

Now these are talented jerks I can get into. Occasionally grating and corny, but that is far outshined by many five star moments.
Never really got into the Britpop thing (aside from Pulp and Elastica) but never really hated any of the bands. This is solid rock and roll music. But nothing special? Maybe it doesn’t need to be .
I kind of love this album and kind of love Oasis. But not really. Ya know?

Muy bueno
One of my favorite memories is when I went to a concert that was Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s solo project. Metric opened for them. After Garbage played, I turned to my partner and said “I got my money’s worth.” They agreed and we left. It may have been the minority, but there were still a significant number of people returning to their cars that evening before he ever stepped foot on stage.
One of the great debuts of all time right up there with all the great debuts from the likes of The Velvet Underground & Nico, Big Star, The Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Elvis Presley, you get the idea and one of the best albums of the 20th Century or any century for that matter. In all ways masterful. ... and to think they would only get better on the next album!
I have never really listened to Oasis, so I tried to give this a chance. Just in case my preconceived notions weee influenced by the Gallagher brothers’ drama and/or the fact that I can’t think of anyone who actually likes Oasis. However I couldn’t do it, I think I listened to the first 3 songs and skipped through the rest… not my jam.
I really love this album, sure it's not mixed well. But, damn it, it's just a fun album. Everyone needs a good basic rock and roll album to put on now and again.
I detest OASIS, I can't get over them -- and they certainly can't get over themselves. This is going to be a hard listen today.
It’s a shame that Liam and Noel died in a murder-suicide in 2002, though it’s hotly debated whether any suicide took place: both left manically-scrawled notes that read “I’m going to kill the bastard before he kills me”. Forensic scientists were unable to determine who died first, but the sheer quantity of mayhem - guitar strings wrapped round necks, eyes gouged out with picks, mic stands shoved up arses, etc. - suggests something extremely heartfelt took place.
I was in Oasis as a teen. Live Forever was absolutely something to listen to when you were in the throes in your bedroom. Anyways, I don't know that it's aged well as an entire album for me. The second half was not nearly as fun as I remember.

Puta mierda oasis
I remember hearing this album everywhere the year it came out. It was on the radio, it was at every house party... But even in 1994, it felt uninspired and unoriginal to my teenage ears. It lacked soul and energy, it was just... vanilla (especially since it was the height of the grunge craze back then, and compared to Nirvana, Oasis felt like old people music). And the Beatles had already done so much better... I saw them live at a festival in 1996, and it didn’t change my mind one bit. So. Here we are now, about 30 years later. I tried to put aside my disdain for Oasis and give it a honest listen. I really tried. But nope... still don’t like it. While I don’t hate it with a passion anymore, I found it far too generic and derivative. It’s not BAD bad ; I even enjoyed « Bring It On Down » (the only track that aged well in my opinion). But overall it’s just... meh. Most of the songs are very forgettable. If played at a party, « Supersonic » or « Live Forever » will make 45 years-old people like me nod in recognition, and it will be a nice excuse to start a conversation. But that’s about it...
When I was younger (early 2010s), I had a crush on this girl in my class. I just thought I really wanted to be her friend (seeing as I had no idea what a lesbian was at the time), so I thought I had to like everything that she liked. She mentioned that Oasis was her favourite band, at first I was confused as the only Oasis I knew was the drink you get in the UK, so I lied and said I also loved them. At this time, my information about music from before I was born (2004 if you want to feel old) came directly from what my parents liked. As you can tell, they fucking hate Oasis, and I can now officially say that I agree with them.

I don't love Oasis' bluster. I think it's absurd for them to claim they are bigger than the Beatles. But if I put aside their persona, their music is not bad. The tracks I liked on this album are the big ones: Live Forever and Supersonic.
I neither buy into Oasis's self-generated hype, nor can I bring myself to dislike them on general principle. With those extreme removed, I feel like you are left with 2-3 solid singles, surrounded by a bunch of songs whose primary sin is just sounding too fuzzily similar. Lowish 3.
Whiny vocals with wall of noise guitars that doesn't really vary from song to song. 'Live Forever' is admittedly catchy but otherwise not my thing.
A few good ones but the song writing just isn’t there for me. Plus I prefer what’s the story morning glory

Britpop... Genren som modsvaret til grunge i USA i halvfemserne. Det er sgu fedt ngl, kan virkelig godt lide det. Det er deres debutalbum og de blev superstjerne natten over nærmest og det lyder jo bare fedt. Tror det er det guitardrevne og at det lyder lidt indie-agtigt som gør det godt for mit vedkommende. Måske også at det lyder som noget fra 60'erne eller 70'erne. Det var angiveligt med til at genoplive troen på britisk rock så det er meget storartet.
Plup might have written the best Britpop song of them all in Common People, but Oasis had a 1-2 all time killer combo in Definitely Maybe and What's The Story Morning Glory. 5 stars no skips from an xennial this album was made for.

Ok, volgens mij is dit het vervolgalbum van Whats the story morning glory. Daar was ik niet zo weg van, maar misschien is mn smaak wat veranderd of ben ik heel erg in de Oasis mood? Live forever pakt me in elk geval best wel, en de eerste 2 nummers luisteren ook wat lekkerder weg dan ik hiervoor vond. Al was Champagne Supernova een prachtnummer. Vooral Wonderwall leidde tot problemen bij me. Maar goed, het gaat nu over Definitely Maybe, sowieso een banger van een album titel. Het is iets minder standaard rockmuziek dan het vorige album vind ik. De muziek klinkt beter, al gaat Oasis wel nog steeds voor VEEL GELUID. Liam, of Noel, heeft een funny klagende manier van zingen, maar misschien is dat wel gewoon typisch Brits. Het past ergens wel bij de teksten ofzo? Ik weet niet, trek het beter dan het vorige album, waarschijnlijk omdat het wat alternatiever is en iets bijzonderder? Whats the story is naar mijn mening meer een poprock album, terwijl dit wat anders is. Geen 4 sterren, maar wel een sterke 3 sterren, wel ff luisteren naar niets want het volume is wel vermoeiend. This is the craziest album. I get why folks hate it. I get why folks love it. I look at the track listing and think that this is a bit rubbish. I listen to the album and think this is awesome. I'll go four stars.

This is a great album. You can tell the time and effort into getting the sound out. Album is super busy, yet balanced and the sonic sound of the album likely sounds amazing with a high end sound system. Definitely want to listen on a high end system.
Yeah , bit mixed really , some good tunes , some average. Struggle with the Brothers appearing to be total knobheads and there’s definitely a point lost for that !!
The best Oasis album and one that I loved at the time it came out. And still do. Live Forever is still up there as one of my favourite all time songs. But so many others on the album still have me hooked. Slide Away, Columbia, Bring It On Down etc. Another one of those rare albums where there isn’t really a track I would skip. Still as listenable today as it was back then.
The last great rock n roll band! The Gallagher brothers swaggered onto the scene with their brash debut album which firmly shook up the UK alternative landscape. It’s simple, it’s classic and it’s superb. Not surprised that this had very little reach beyond these shores as it has a very British feel to it. The songs, while a little naive (especially on the vocals) in places are all strong with no weak tracks. The added depth of Shakermaker, Columbia, Slide Away are my favourites but the classic songs like Supersonic and Live Forever are equally as good. The album perfectly captures their live and raw sound through the production. They would go on to improve the songwriting on the second album, but this as a debut is mint as they would say in Manchester.
I’m really trying to think of a reason not to give this a 5*. They are a pair of massive bellends. Musically, vocally and lyrically it’s not all that and the production isn’t fantastic. However, this album just has too much swagger to ignore. Amazing how far a bit of attitude and strong songwriting can get you. Still think Noel ‘learnt’ a lot being a roadie for The Real People. Listen to the guitars in ‘Wonderful’.

For po music like this the songs are interminable. If they were half as long I’d give it a three.
The first song on this album is quite generic. After the first song, the album gets better. The vocals are grating at times, however it does not take away from the music itself. This album is also strangely nostalgic
Indie just isn't my cup of tea, even though their opening album was well received critically and commercially, to me, it's eh? Sorry.

I really don’t like oasis. I can hear other songs in their songs and their voices are a little grating. Giving them 2 ⭐️ because my college roommate loved them.
I was never an Oasis guy when they first came out. I was a metalhead, so these guys were wusses. But I enjoyed this album. Definitely Maybe was Oasis’s debut album, so I had only heard one or two songs before my listen. But after listening to it twice, this will make it into my saved albums list. What struck me was, they reminded me of two bands I love, the Sex Pistols & the underrated hair/blues metal band, Junkyard. The similarities are all have a unique singer and the band plays simple rock ‘n’ roll, though Oasis has more bells and whistles. The standouts for me were Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Up in the Sky, Digsy’s Diner and my fave was Cigarettes & Alcohol. Maybe I liked C&A because I’m a big Marc Bolan fan and the riff is straight Bolan.
Decent album, maybe good for running. Many of the songs sounded similar to each other. Listened while lifting at events center.

Having mostly known Oasis from Wonderwall (which I have never liked), I was pleasantly surprised. It was good, if not something that personally thrills me.
Excited this one popped up. I love this album and Oasis in general. I’d consider it an essential album to the 90s pop rock genre. It’s interesting reading the history of the album, how much work went into it, and how it almost didn’t make it. Also curious to hear what the original tracks sounded like compared to the final album.
Rock'n'Roll Star is making me wonder how this album has such high accolades. Yeah, not sure what people see in this. Nostalgia, perhaps? Wow, the mix is so much better on Supersonic. Still not a fan, especially of the dude's voice, but that's one less thing to hate. And we're back to the muffled mix. That's a low 2.
Would rate 3.5 if I could. Enjoyable listen through the end, though I did start thinking that Liam Gallagher might be the Brit-rock Bob Dylan with how nasally he’d lean into the vocals in some tracks. Ultimately the album presents itself as inoffensive and digestible tunes. Nothing that really blows me away, but I could see myself returning to a few tracks. Favorites: Slide Away, Married With Children, Up In The Sky, Live Forever
Jangly and whiny, pretty straight-up rock n roll, I'm not sure why people fawn over these guys really. Still, some great hooks and catchy songwriting on the second half of the album. Maybe could improve with a couple more spins.
One of the better debut albums in rock history. It's hard to get a better rock n roll song than SuperSonic. I enjoy albums that are guitar driven and Oasis is all that.
This is a pretty solid album. The songs are all pretty good and catchy, but a couple are forgettable. Oasis seems to have trouble ending some songs when I think they should and they drag a bit. Standouts were "Rock 'n' Roll Star" "Up In The Sky" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" All in all, pretty solid. I'd say nothing to write home about but a good collection of fun tunes. A pretty good effort for a debut album! 3/5 for me.
Great opener. Great close. Some songs in the middle don't do very much but I enjoy the overall sound.

They definitely figured it out with (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but they needed 11 songs to get there. With all the ignorance about the history & context of this album that I can muster: Nothing about any of the tracks feels unique, exploratory, challenging, etc., and therefore I cannot find a reason to like any of them. If this an important album in the sense that it redefined genres or made a splash when other similar records couldn't, that is the only way I could see this record being included in the list. It's the least of Oasis (for me) in that the sound is pop-y/rock-y, the vocals are grunge-y, and there's no sense of purpose coming from either direction. Once we get (WtS)MG? - only a year later! - we are introduced to the unaffected pop rock that I associate with (and like about) the band. We hear a far more developed sound complete with catchier hooks and a richer instrumentation worthy of superstardom. Definitely Maybe? Not so much.
i have no idea why but oasis has always been one of those bands that i just absolutely love no matter what they do. maybe combining loud, kickass instrumentals with really pretty beatles-esque melodies is a better combination than i'd think. and yeah, there are obvious flaws - "live forever" is a weird hybrid of "wonderwall" and candlebox's "far behind" and has 3 identical verses, "cigarettes & alcohol" is a very obvious ripoff of "bang a gong" by t. rex - but my two braincells seem to love this all the same. favorite song: slide away (absolutely gorgeous) overall: 10/10
I like this more than their other album. There is more of a bite, it's a bit more exciting. There seems to be more emphasis on riffs (Cigarettes & Alcohol sounds like T Rex) and there are some good solos like Bring It On Down. The muddy production probably helps as well, if feels more sleazy and probably gives it a better sense of personality than a squeaky clean, sleek style The production is a bit of a double-edged sword though as after a while a lot of it starts getting kind of samey as the instruments are constantly muddled together. The way the end of words is stretched out is sort of annoying too, like Live Foreveeeeaaaaaaaaaah This is a decent album, and I didn't expect to say that because I started the generator not liking Oasis at all. Many of the songs here are very nostalgic and I appreciate them, but Oasis’ album bloat problem has always existed. None of these songs needed to be 5 minutes
Awesome record for sure. Crazy that it came at their recent reunion. I think this is is my favorite overall record by them. A great example of 90's alternative brit rock.
Oasis is one of those bands I’d love to rediscover now, without the prejudices of my teens. They’re one of those bands I really want to like, but they just don’t do anything for me. Maybe it’s Liam’s voice, maybe it’s his cocky attitude, maybe it’s that I can’t listen without “I SAID MAYBEEEEEEEEE” playing on loop in my head, or maybe I just can’t connect with what they sing. It’s not you, it’s me. Still, I gave it a proper listen, and at times I caught Beatles vibes, just with that ’90s irreverence.
Automatic pass for me. I hated this album when it came out as a teen, and I still despise Oasis to this day. I refuse to waste any of my time on this shit. Just an overhyped Brit Rock band that are at best mediocre, but are such assholes, I give them the lowest rating possible
Oasis foi um grupo monumental. Todo mundo sabe disso. Eu particularmente adoro britpop e tenho um fascínio imenso por esta banda. Esse álbum junto do seu sucessor, Morning Glory, são sem dúvida alguns dos discos mais fantásticos da década de 1990. Eu escrevi em uma outra resenha minha opinião a respeito do debate de Oasis x Blur. Só pra relembrar, eu havia escrito que Oasis tem as melhores canções e os melhores singles, mas Blur possui os melhores álbuns. E não existe lugar melhor para evidenciar este meu ponto do que aqui, no disco de estréia deles. Muitas faixas daqui são absolutamente sensacionais. Supersonic é minha favorita não só da banda mas de todo movimento britpop, mas além dela, temos Slide Away, Live Forever, Married With Children, Cigarettes & Alcohol… Várias pedradas. O fator que mais me pega nessas canções é o quanto elas grudam na cabeça, o quão memoráveis elas realmente são, e o quanto, ao ouvi-las, temos a impulsão quase sobrenatural de berrar suas letras em coro. Por isso considero as pessoas que conseguiram ir ao show de reunião deles bem sortudo, deve ser uma experiência inigualável cantar o refrão de Slide Away ou de Supersonic junto de milhares de pessoas. Dito isso, não consigo dar uma nota perfeita para este álbum. Retornando ao meu velho mantra britpopiano, Oasis têm as melhores canções e Blur têm os melhores álbuns. Sempre gosto de dizer que Supersonic sozinha é melhor que qualquer canção do Blur, mas Modern Life is Rubbish é melhor do que todos os discos do Oasis juntos. A experiência de ouvir um disco do Oasis de capa a capa é, muitas vezes, frustrante. Algumas de suas canções acabam por se estender por muito tempo, com demasiadas repetições. E mesmo que eu adore as vozes de Noel e Liam, não há como negar que eles possuem um tom monótono, algo que funciona incrivelmente bem quando se ouve suas canções em isolamento, mas que no decorrer de 52 minutos seguidos, pode acabar ficando desagradavel. E para além dos vocais, a instrumentalização da banda possui aquela estética “muddy”, lamacenta, que é obviamente intencional mas que no decorrer de um álbum completo, fica perto de esgotar nossa paciência. Definitely Maybe sofre um pouco com filler, algumas canções aqui são inconsequentes, este álbum poderia ter sido encurtado lá pra casa dos 40-45 minutos e teria sido vastamente mais agradável de ouvi-lo. Felizmente, seu sucessor Morning Glory não sofre tanto com este problema e acredito que ele seja superior por isso. 4/5

Good stuff. Oasis hit at the right time in my life, and I can go back to that well because the quality endures. The raw sound on this one stands out, and I still enjoy a spin 30+ years later.

It feels like someone tried to make a joke about AI making a 90's band that was pointlessly bad...except it was real and years before the slop we endure now and somehow folks still compared these noodles to the Beatles. Worst ten letters in the English language as a karaoke host? Wonderwall.
Hate the vocals, hate the Gallaghers. I could probably dig to find some things about this album I don't hate but I don't want to - listening to the whole thing was bad enough. Whiny repetitive uninteresting songs with the most inane rhymes that never needed to be recorded. And how DARE they use a T.Rex riff for this rubbish!! Unforgivable.

Good, not great, though the next record would be much closer to great, before the returns quickly got diminishing to the point of disappearing. Gets off to bad start because rock and roll songs about rock and roll are notably – and famously – passe. High and undeniable doofiness factor, especially lyrically (e.g., “Feelin’ supersonic / Give me gin and tonic;" "she did it with a doctor/in a helicopter”) which is perhaps an occupational hazard for bands of the people. While most tracks are solid (and pretty straightforward, if overdone), only “Live Forever” truly stands out as approaching anything like transcendence. Feels like a slog when it’s meant to soar. Do they need to repeat “slide away” a dozen and a half times in a row to end that otherwise fine song? Was it thought that the repetition would make it seem more important or, like, heavier? Plus it’s overlong, patience-testingly so. The overall effect is of a big fat wedge of chugging and bludgeony and samey and laddish rock embicility. Again, morning glory is much the better record. Please, people don’t but reunion tour tix or we’ll never see the back of these allegedly populist yobs. Better than Blur, sure but not by much. And suffers from the same problem: they are not nearly as clever or cool as they think they are and it was mostly knuckleheads who made them think so in the first place.
It’s another album that works better out of its context.
My esteemed colleague and polymath who writes for this musical obituary recently noted a dearth of contributors which prompted me to see if I could remember my password, and here I am and Dimery has chucked up a great record, maybe the Buddhists are right about kharma? Firstly to Noel. He cops a lot of grief for his appropriation of a lot of ideas and sounds. I'm reminded of what EC said when people pointed out to him that Olivia Rodrigo had lifted the riff from Pump it Up. He said "This is fine by me. It's how rock and roll works, you taken the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy". And in Definitely Maybe we have a whole lot of broken bits when the 70's smashed, bashed and crashed into the 90's That's what Noel got up to in the 90's. Indeed this album is littered with 70's references and lifts and it is a key part of its magic. There is nary a Beatles reference here, it's The New Seekers, T Rex and Bowie. The other huge influence that dominates this record is Never Mind the Bollocks. This is a Matlock/Jones influenced album. The snarly gnarly Rotten style singing by Liam and the huge Steve Jones guitar sound and Noel's quite brilliant ear for melody makes for a great rock and roll sound. Two things make the sound: Owen Morris's superb production and Noel's nasty Epiphone Les Paul. Nothing like a bit of poverty (he couldn't afford a Gibson) to make a guitar sound howl. Famously Johnny Marr changes it again when he gifts Noel a couple of Gibsons, but that's for when and if Dimery wants people to die to Morning Glory. And the tunes? Live Forever is a bona fide stand alone classic pop song. It's like a history of rock and roll, timeless and close to one of Noel's finest lyrics and a great performance by Liam. Rock and Roll Star/Supersonic/Cigarettes and Alcohol (best Marc Bolan tribute of all time) are superb bed sit working class rock and roll, you've got to make it happen! These tunes are the key to why they cut through in mid 90's Britain; big guitars and ropey lyrics about how shit life is but there is something worth working for, maybe...definitely. Columbia is a deadset nod to Diamond Dogs and a precursor to Champagne Supernova, while the two closing tracks Slide Away and Married with Children show where Noel is going with his song writing, Don't Look Back in Anger here we come. I've been playing this since they announced the playlist for their reunion tour. It's massive, its stupid, its melodic and its a whole lot of fun. Great record.
My mate Andrew L. has a long-running alternative radio show on 2RDJ, and he would often borrow records from me to spin on his show. In 1994, he started asking if I had any Oasis records. I'd stopped closely following British musical trends, but I was aware of the band and I didn't really get it. I mean, I like rock and roll, and I like Beatlesque pop, and I like a good tune and a bit of attitude. So, why didn't I dig Oasis? They seemed just like a bunch of really average guys doing nothing special, but with a massive over-confidence that what they were doing was world-shaking, and they didn't have to do anything to prove it. I loathed the way they appeared in videos and live performance footage, standing there, stone-faced, absent-mindedly strumming, while that prat at the front stood there motionless, singing in his flat affect. I felt they were contemptuous of the audience, and they just could not be bothered putting on a performance. The songs were pretty basic Beatles/Stones rip-offs (it often feels like a game of "spot where Noel ripped this off from"), and the lyrics were emotionally inarticulate doggerel sung by a bored tosser. The medium-paced songs are just like the fast songs, just played a little bit slower. Nearly every song on the album is 2 minutes too long, which speaks to Noel's tendency towards bloat. The album is loud and in-your-face, but reading about it, it seems like Owen Morris saved it in the mix because Noel doesn't really know how to efficiently arrange songs. So, how to account for the massive success of this kind of mediocre record by a mediocre band? Well, it's got to be something about the songs. They may be derivative and artless, but they are comfortingly familiar, with cracking tunes that sound great when you sing along in a stadium, and they clearly are meaningful to a lot of people. As I write, the much-hyped reunion tour just kicked off a in Cardiff, and reviews describe the show as a two hour singalong for middle-aged blokes in parkas, overcome with lager, nostalgia and a fleeting feeling of immortality, paying four hundred quid each for the privilege. No thanks! Oasis had an infectious ambition to be the Biggest Band in the World, but they pissed away the chance to be really great on cocaine, booze, and ego. They became the rich dicks they seem to be railing against on this record. Andrew L. was disappointed when Oasis cancelled out of the 1995 Big Day Out touring festival in Australia, but I wasn't. Regardless of their reputation as the 'hottest band in the world', I don't buy that they were ever a decent live band. Over-rated. Three stars.
This makes me so nostalgic even though I was 6 months old when this album was released; it makes me crave for simpler times and non demonic music. Innocence has been lost since 2001. It's alright. I didn't hate it but after a while all the songs sound the same and I started to wonder when each damn track was going to finally be over, especially on the back half. (What's the Story) Morning Glory was one of my first CDs but I don't think I've ever listened to this one before, probably because I assumed the above would be true.

Like most Americans, I liked Oasis but mostly for their 2nd album, plus when this when came out raising a family was priority # 1, listening to family friendly stuff like Barney etc. If I could rewind I’d pay more attention to the brotherly love show.

I never really listened to Oasis a whole lot, and in the first couple of tracks I'm reminded that this sound really might not be for me. The songs are long and uninteresting. This feels like one of those albums that if I caught at the right time would be life changing kind of sounds. Married With Children is a nice song and the tone is scratchy and rough which feels like an appropriate tone for when Oasis was crushing it in the 90's.

Oasis is a band I grew up with. MAAYBEEE I'll like this album, let's see. Rock 'n' Roll Star is OK. Shaker maker is kinda dull. Live Forever is another MAYBEEE. Oasis really like that word, don't they? Best song on album is probably Supersonic. Somehow, even the guitars whine. Overall Oasis aren't bad, they do come across as a bit generic, though. This album is not a strong defence against those allegations. They're probably the epitome of a band I'm unlikely to skip but I'm never going to seek them out to listen to. But that means the algorithms on Spotify or YouTube Music will probably keep delivering them thinking they're a favourite when they aren't. This is probably an album that feels like I should like it, but I just don't. It's not that it's bad, it's just that it does nothing interesting. And that makes it interminably dull. I'm gonna Slide Away from this album and never think about it again.

Misschien moet iedereen gewoon lekker normaal doen. En niet al te slim proberen te doen met bijvoorbeeld een andere toonsoort dan Gmaj. Of super edgy en angsty dingen naar je hoofd slingeren als je ook gewoon over bowlen kan zingen. Miscchien moeten we gewoon lekker de kroeg in gaan en coke snuiven. Dat is naar mijn mening Oasis. Lekker recht door zee muziek die geweldig in het oor klinkt dankzij de fantastische stem van Liam Gallagher en de hoogstaande muzikaliteit van zijn broeder Noel.

Mostly boring, I'm sorry Oasis u.u, I really liked Bring it on Down and Live Forever, but most of the songs felt repetitive for too long and not as interesting to keep enganged.
Today was a busy day and I didn’t get completely through it although largely familiar with the band and their hits in the 90s. The songs I didn’t know feel comfortable and familiar but something about the mix just isn’t right…the tone is too bright and annoyingly fuzzy on several songs especially those early on. In short, I didn’t hear anything that was truly new or amazing which summarizes my feelings about the band decades ago. Live Forever and Wonderwall are brilliant…everything else just sort of feels meh. 3/5

Long time no hear. The 90s where did they go. The darling Gallagher bros, tabloid press darlings, and crew. Britpop and lad culture. If nostalgia has a championship in music they are right up there at the top of the league at the moment. For that reason wanted to put this back on and say well that was shit wasn’t it. But to be fair it’s not, yes still think Liams delivery is the weakest part, especially when he does that trademark drawing out of words, but that biggest cock in the room, I wanna be Lennon was his shtick. It’s good British rock n roll with it’s influences firmly front and centre, which is fine, to carry on the sport analogy, it isn’t playing in the same league but it’s the same sport. Good rock album, far from the best but still good. 4 Star

It's not the gem for me that others have found. The people I hear in the album, I just don't like or respect. An unpleasantness about them. As to musicality and significance, similar to Milli Vanilli or Frankie goes to Hollywood, it feels manufactured and sterile after the first few listens. Two stars.

I don't think I've ever listened to this album. When these guys blew up, I was at the peak of my punk stridency, and Oasis' rockstar bullshit was anathema to me (and I didn't think their songs backed up their egos). I also was also on Team Blur during the completely-invented-by-the-British-media rivalry between Blur and Oasis. I've softened since; I listened to the 20th anniversary edition of (What's the Story) Morning Glory a bunch of times when it came out, though I haven't gone back to it. All that said, this album still gets a shrug from me. The songs are too long for what they are—"Live Forever" would be so much better if they chopped a minute off—and the lyrics have no shortage of clichés. It's totally fine mid-'90s Britpop. I don't say this often, but 1994 me was on the right track.

I grew up listening to oasis because my dad was a GIGANTIC fan... help me I always judged oasis albums as a kid by looking if they had ''Don't turn your back in anger'' on them. Rock 'n' Roll star is a great energy opening. A lot of the happiness I get from this is probably nostalgia. I didn't play Oasis songs but heard the album a lot with my brother. As a result I didn't over listen to it since and it comes as a nice return.
My review of this is very influenced by the fact that I originally listened to this over two days. I'd had to break my listen yesterday afternoon so listened to the last 3 tracks this morning. My experience was so different I ended up going back and having a second listen. First time through Liam's vocal style and stretched vowels dominated, not always grating but overpowering. Second time the music came to the front, the guitar and percussion uncovered. Both times Supersonic and Cigarettes and Alcohol stood out, Married with Children was also a nice finish, I'd have liked to have more of that.
Rock n Roll Star - good statement of intent song for a debut album Shaker Maker - not sure this aged as well. The Coca Cola advert music bit jars against an otherwise ok song Live Forever - this is well written. Noel Gallagher showing a bit of talent. Hard for me to enjoy with fresh ears given how many times I’ve heard this belted out karaoke style. Good single, madly over played Up in the Sky - is more interesting. Stone Roses influenced rock. Meaningless lyrics. Wish the whole album went with this sound Columbia - this is pretty forgettable, sounds like Heathen Chemistry. It’s not bad but it’s not good either Supersonic - again over played. But this is probably as strong as they get. The low sludge guitar works on this. Nonsense lyrics but not annoyingly. Chorus is good Bring on Down - kind of forgettable. Nice vibe to second half of the song. A couple minutes of rock no singing Cigarettes and Alcohol - best song on the album alongside Supersonic. Sure it’s a set format pop song. But it’s anthemic in a way that doesn’t grate for me Digsys Dinner - sounds like a demo take. Absolute garbage. Slide Away - Noel can write. Loses it a bit on the bridge. Refreshing to get an attempt at some reflective lyrics. Ends up getting shoe horned into a big chorus though “ Slide Awaayyyy” Married with Children - sounds like something Blur would write. Makes you realise why Liam doesn’t sing on the quiet songs Strong 3/5
I loved this album as a child. I was a big Oasis fan at one time, after many years away my memories of it is better then actually sticking it on. Rock n Roll star is a great opener - lots of energy and personality. I also loved closing tracks Slide Away and Married with Children, which really caught me. But then there’s songs like Shakermaker which have aged very badly. This song has the especially unforgiving placement of track 2. The most impressive thing about this debut is that despite them being heavily inspired by The Stone Roses (note how Noel sings “SHINNNNEEE”) they have a very clear identity of its own. This identity is lost on later records.
My first full Oasis album, something I’ve been avoiding my whole life. Actually pretty solid and could be a 4 if Liam’s voice and personality didn’t grate on me quite so much.
Solid debut. Not as good as their next album (which is a masterpiece) but pretty damn close. Favorites: Rock 'N' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic, Slide Away, Married with Children Would I listen to it again: Yes

Light on bangers! Live Forever, Rock 'n' Roll Star, Slide Away are true greats. Runs long. I still would have seen Oasis in a heartbeat, if I were in Cardiff.

This is my era of rock/alternative music. Never heard Oasis's first album before; it's really solid. Good tracks on here that sound quintessentially like Oasis. I really liked Supersonic, Columbia, and Slide Away.

Listened Before? Y This was in my collection back in the day. I prefer this to their second record overall since they were more grungy and kept it more upbeat. This brought Brit Pop to the States it meshed well with the grunge/alternative scene taking pop music by storm. The fact that they were rockers of the old ilk didn’t hurt.
Definitely the best thing I've heard from Oasis. Still Oasis.

OK! So I've never listened to more than the one oasis song lol. But I feel like I wasn't expecting such upbeat rock. I know that a lot of people LOVE Oasis. It's very stoner rock-ish. I don't really mind it, but I don't know if I like it per say. It's sorta boring me lol, all washing into one. Jk! It really picked up in the middle! Okay so this one is fine. I wouldn't be opposed to someone else listening to it, but I would never listen to it on my own. It's not bad, just not to my taste. I liked the slower songs on the album, so that seems to be my preferred Oasis vibe apparently.

Great duo. Songwriting is amazing and the music is wonderfully put together. Oozes pop and sex appeal. Great rock and roll. Now that I’m older I can appreciate it more.
Decent. Catchy generic sound, but on the back end hasn't aged much.
I hated the first song. Should I even keep going? Four songs in. This is music for posh wankers. Brit Coldplay. Background music for Apple product adverts. Less offensive than the Foo Fighters Almost done. This album blows.
I dig the early sound that Oasis had, that ran counter to the more popular grunge in the 90s.

A classic but not really groundbreaking to my ears.
10/10 The album that started it all for me? 14-years old and it blew me away. Ive not listened to any album as much again, and although there are many I now consider better, I know I won't hear anything that will consume me so wholly as this album did. For such an album that was The One for me back in the day, I'm glad it still holds up as an excellent piece of guitar rock. The lyrics are really poor, but everything else is sublime. Still love it. They never matched it again, and I moved on, but this will always be a top 10 album.

I really enjoyed this album, it’s been decades since I heard it last but it’s still an outstanding record.
Better than I thought. Pretty basic songs but enough energy to keep it interesting.
The distorted guitar sound was not enjoyable for the whole album, and the voice is just not good. It's a shame too, because there are some good melodies in there. They just make them sound bad.
The tracks on this one blended together quite a bit for me. There were some enjoyable bits in there for sure, and nothing was bad. I just can't name much that stood out to me on this one Standouts Supersonic Married With Children 3/5
Unlike albums like Out of the Blue, I'm not already an Oasis fan, so this album is pretty forgettable to me. Got a few solid tracks, though I'm unaware of what the singles are. Very early The Who vibes from me.
