Reviews (page 10 of 14)
6/10 - They kind of sounded like wonderwall but it was not as good because its not a meme. I liked Slide Away however.
Hate them, thought this album was actually decent tho. I was boppin
I expected better from them
corecore
Some undeniable tunes (live forever) and they are great at rock history pilfering (I mean it as a compliment). But I never connected emotionally with an oasis song.
Yep, sounds like Oasis. Not as familiar with this album as their next. It's fine, all the Oasis stuff is there, just nothing pops out at me. His voice is a bit whiney. Solid, but forgettable.
Great debut album. It suffers from knowing what they come up with after this. Feels rough.
3.5/5
Decent, I can see why it was so popular when it released and how it might have changed the genre, but it's been so far eclipsed by their later work and others that I'd rather listen to.
I liked this more than I thought I would. It must be the Manchester chav in my ancestry.
got some bangers !!
Better than I thought, worse than the hype.
Had at least 3 solid songs but the entire album felt a bit monotonous. The production was at least able to make up for some its the shortcomings. A dated masterpiece. Top 3 Fav: Live Forever, Slide Away, and Supersonic Top 3 Worst: no bad songs besides a few songs that were mid 2.75-3.00
Pretty average pop rock album. Nothing really stood out and nothing completely sucked.
If you'd asked me even twenty years ago, I'd probably have gone on about how two Manc lads stuck two fingers up at the system and defined the zeitgeist for the best part of a decade. I mean, they did do that, but their pervasiveness through UK culture is all sorts of cringe. The buskers singing "Wonderwall", the ladsladslads stood in a circle, hanging drunkenly off each other's shoulders while singing "She's electric" to each other. The headline news stories about Ticketmaster price gouging. That said - their best material is on this album (Rock 'n' roll star, Cigarettes and alcohol) or not on any album at all (Whatever, Half the world away (shut your face, The Masterplan is not an album)) and so the truly heinous, pompous, nasal, whiny, guitar - droning dross comes later. There's an observation that really does hold true. You can tell a lot about a person by the sort of music they like, and if they like Oasis it probably means they have terrible taste in music. Rating this album is hard, because while I find Oasis' later stuff to be genuinely triggering, there are actually a couple of decent tracks in this album, and it's impossible to understate quite how influential Oasis became on the back of this, and their subsequent album. What you can't forgive them for is their role in popularising The Verve, or opening the door to early-mid 2000s dross indy. But that isn't this album, so it's probably going to have to be an uncomfortably high 3.
Rather unmemorable. I enjoyed the first few songs, but the rest felt largely the same.
Mediocre. I expected worse, but still not my thing. I don't tink I'll listen to it again.
decent amount of talent here but it's like you take the Beatles and remove the clarity and range.
I know Oasis fairly well but my listens of this album were very few. All-in-all it's pretty good but probably won't make it into the rotation. Live Forever is a really nice track. Slide Away is a nice track later in the album.
Ok
This album has been on my list of albums to check out for a while. I was familiar with Live Forever (thanks Rockband!) but not much else. It’s a fine album overall, but sorta felt generic at times. Was expecting more from the “new Beatles”. Glad I listened to the album though, and I would listen again, but would not purchase for my collection. Favorite song(s): Live Forever, Digsy’s Dinner Least favorite: Shakermaker Knew before? Apparently not even though I owned the CD…
Didn't really work for me. I don't like Liam's voice and I don't like the mixing (?). I wish I could get what everyone sees in this record but I just don't enjoy listening to it. The song I liked best was Married with Kids which is the only one without the fuzzy guitar - maybe it's just a stylistic thing. 3
Test
Up my alley for whiney vocals but nothing stand outs as being a super interesting album. Saved Live forever and Married with children for the playlist rotation but other than those it’s abit lacklustre. Bonus on having a sweet looking album cover
Decent enough, but don't really vibe with it.
Yep that was a range of sound waves that entered and bounced inside my ear hole and made my brain go “Mmmm music”
Felt a bit same-y compared to their follow up. Still a decent listen, favourite track probably Columbia
Good. Not their best. A but repetitive. I'm not sure it's one of the best albums ever. I did enjoy it though
I get why people would love this but it didn't do much for me
Never listened to the album before. Had high hopes given the quality of their second album, but this one didn't impress me nearly as much. It's a good, but not great, album.
Not a bad album. I think it starts off stronger than it ends, but it's pretty middle of the road in general. 3/5
Rämpytys rock med vissa bra låtar, helt solid album
Never listened to the album before. Had high hopes given the quality of their second album, but this one didn't impress me nearly as much. It's a good, but not great, album.
Yeah, it was fine, but I was underwhelmed by the album - a couple of memorable songs, but that was it.
Not bad, but not the greatest, and the singer's voice gets a little tiring over time. I had no idea they were as big as the Wikipedia article revealed. I'll bet a live show would be more appealing.
why do ppl give af about them getting back together
This isn't my most listened to Oasis album, but that's just because of timing. The songs aren't deep, but there's a trance like aspect to the noise of the band, and what's when they're at their best.
Bring it on down is bewt on the album. It's okay, very set to the 90s sludgey guitar sound.
I want to give this a 1 or 2 star review because it's Oasis but, honestly, for all it's jangly Brit-poppiness, this is a pretty solid debut album and a pretty solid 90s alt-rock album.
It's fine. Totally serviceable British pop music.
Fun pop rock album, nothing more to say about it.
eh it was okay, but I would not listen to is again.
Feel like the trouble listening to a band like Oasis now is that it's hard to picture them as revolutionary since they influenced so much that came after them -- without hearing them first it's tough to know how it felt in the moment. In this moment it feels fine but nothing exceptional.
okay oasis
Pre-listening thoughts: Womp womp oasis is what I wrote when I woke up and saw this album this morning. Oasis is like… fine but it’s exactly the kind of pick I would expect from the loser who made this list. Also Oasis sucks cause they skip their own concerts but they don’t have music good enough to excuse doing something like that. Post/during listening thoughts: exactly what I expected womp womp oasis be better musicians and human beings 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope! Fav tracks: wonderwall I mean uhhhh Least fav tracks:
5/10 As a 90s child I am more than familiar with Oasis, and don’t think they have aged particularly well Good Melodie’s, some good vocals, some good guitars. A handful of songs that are good and very evocative of a time But even in the first album the music is chugging, both overproduced and badly produced (sludgy, bass and drums often disappear into the mix) with way too much emphasis on the guitar Too long and not good enough IMO Best: Married With Children
At this point, i didn't hate Oasis and thought they had a few good numbers even came close to buying an album. Shortly after they morphed into a cliche and everyone stopped taking drugs and subscribing to one love. I balme them personally for the downfall of youth culture and the retrograde step back into casual violence and misogyny. Mutter mutter grumble grumble
Didn't these guys cover Wonderwall?
Not bad, just not my thing.
Oh man, if you were a 3.8 on the preference-for-less-poppy-music scale in 1994 - with a 1 being Ace of Bass and a 10 being (I don’t know) Colossamite - this album lived in your CD player for most of late 94-early 95. But I was a 5.2 on that scale (Tori Amos, Portishead, REM) and so I never owned this CD and just know the hits as being played on the radio constantly around that time. And the hits are good, but I have very little affection or nostalgia for this album. It’s pretty cool, I guess. British pop rock. A little bit of attitude but also sophistication. We’re Duran Duran meets The Sex Pistols. We’re wearing suits, but we also have stubble and say “arse” and “wanker”, so watch out! Kind of a neat mixture. But not really my thing.
It's good. Straight-ahead rock/ pop. The voice is a little whiney for my taste. It's not a world-shattering as I thought it would be.
Couple of standout songs, otherwise a good well-rounded album that I don’t totally love.
I definitely maybe listened to this a good bit in the past, which makes it more confusing to me that half the songs don't sound familiar. There is a crazy amount of filler on this for something seen as one of the best albums ever. Slide away and live forever are the standouts. The rest of the singles are good, but man, that filler is what is sticking with me right now. I was gonna say easy 4, but I've enjoyed some 3s more
Proof that more distortion dues not guarantee a harder sound. This is my first listen to anything outside their ubiquitous singles, and I do like it better than I thought I might. It's more authentic and raw than I would have guessed. It'll be interesting to listen to Morning Glory the same way.
Not my favorite oasis album, it was just okay.
Just because it’s stuck in my head doesn’t mean I thought it was good…. I can’t get over the nasally voice and why does this just teeter on rock n roll & Brit pop. I get that some of the songs are iconic but for me this is very average
I would give this one a 3.5 if I could. I think they are a prolific band, with multiple great songs. I just couldn’t justify giving them a 4 for this one.
Ok
I think Slide Away is an amazing song, but I'm afraid that I don't really care for the rest of the album.
It's alright, but I've never been a fan of their sound.
Good background noise. Not for me
Album para ser ouvido inteiro, sem pular nenhuma musica.
3 stars I guess
Mediocre.
Good listen. Not a fan of Oasis but there are some great tracks. Definitely a must hear and very strong debut album.
-This is definitely a solid 3.5 just because it went on a little long but I actually like this! Most of the Britpop stuff I’ve heard before sounded cheesy but this is significantly more interesting -Favorites are Rock n’ Roll Star, Shakermaker, and Columbia
i like
Pretty solid and rocking, if somewhat unoriginal. But what rock & roll isn't?
Other than “Supersonic” and “Live Forever,” true (if somewhat retreaded) rock anthems, it all seems rather underwhelming now, begging the question if too much of a fuss was made. And time hasn’t made it any smarter or wiser or less doofy/yobbish/laddish. Sure, mimicking the Beatles seemed clever and creative (especially to the music market then) but this feels a full notch below Morning Glory. itThe few winning early cuts all have a too-muchness to them, both in terms of sheer overlayering and the length of cuts (they had no sense of an ending or how to wrap things up – ”Columbia” could have been a full two minutes shorter and several other cuts at least a minute). Addition by subtraction was not the Gallaghers' jam, obvs. The alt lead vocals are decidedly sub-par and make “Sad Song” an utter snooze and “Take Me Away” very much surplus to requirements on the deluxe editions, further clutter the already overrated legacy here. Gallaghers were definitely nobody’s life coaches (or shouldn’t have been) but they weren’t exactly Lennon/McCartney as lyricists either (e.g., “Feelin’ supersonic / Give me gin and tonic;" "she done it with a doctor/in a helicopter”). These guys will seem less and less important as years go by and “cool Brittania” becomes a blip in time.
we get it, you like the beatles
Nowhere near the heights of Morning Glory, though the style felt roughly equivalent. Would I really dig this album more if I were almost over-exposes to it? Maybe the melodies just aren't as developed. Still solid.
Loud, raw, and full of youthful energy. Most songs are catchy. The lyrics aren't deep, but they fit the vibe. Overall, a solid debut with plenty of attitude. Not perfect, but memorable.
está bien, es un buen disco de oasis
The book and this website are a celebration of the album as music's finest vehicle of expression. But I find myself thinking most albums are too long. If you knocked 10 to 20 minutes off this it would almost be as good as people say it is.
Just ok, kinda screamy.
Didn't think much pf thr first few songs but the last half were much better to bring it to 3 stars or C+ overall.
By themselves, the songs are good. As a collective, it is hard to listen too. I prefer their music in short bits.
They album on a whole was good. I enjoyed Live Forever, Supersonic, and Slide Away. The other songs on the album were ok, but overall a fun rock album.
Oasis seem like a pretty polarizing band, but you have to credit their polish and ability to write a good hook. I confess to not being familiar with this album, and I was actually alright with it. Decent pop grooves with a high level of production, and seemingly not a ton of depth. Listenable but nothing that was super.
Fun music stoner energy - love Brit pop - more relevant to my life - rock rock
I always liked Oasis and was around when they hit it big, then fell off the apple cart by the lead singer becoming an ego-maniac and they kind of got cancelled before it became a thing. Nevertheless I actually do think they are a good band and while not "as big as the Beatles" (which is what the lead singer decided to declare...) They are hit-makers. This album is no different and has a few great and memorable songs. Thus while this album is a very good "must listen" for this project, I am on the fence as to whether I feel bad they are not "known" too much today or whether they should have eaten a bit of humble pie and kept going.
It's not totally for me, but I like it enough. Will I listen to again: 25%
Eh
solid 3.5
NOT BAD
I liked this. Held my attention more than White Denim. Leaned a little more into pop
was ok
It's fine. Solid. I wouldn't turn it off, but nothing really sticks out. It all blends together. There are other BritPop bands I like more. There are other Oasis albums I like more.
Oasis heeeurlijk maar wel typisch Oasis. Beetje melodramatisch saai.
Se nota la calidad del disco, es realmente bueno. Peeeerooo nunca me va a llegar Oasis, me parece una banda realmente insulsa a pesar del prestigio.
Rock 'n' Roll Star ++ Supersonic +++ Bring It on Down ++ Live forever ++
Pretty good.
I think I only knew Supersonic from this album and was pleasantly surprised with the style of rock on this album in comparison to champagne supernova and wonderwall which are two of their biggest hits. This album reminded me of The Smashing Pumpkins at times and just generally, felt like the type of rock I would have listened to in the 90s.
Other album is better
Great. But old now. Soaring.
Eh, it was okay.
Better than my below the floor expectations, it sounds like a slick tight rock band, and less like a Beatles knock off than the singles I've heard. I got a bit bored as it got samey towards the end, but decent and a lot to like!
Mixed feelings about this album. Half of songs come off as annoying, uninspired, and weirdly phoned in even though it’s their first album. Probably just not my vibe, which is okay. The songs that survive this feel like their run time is too long. Slide Away could have been 4 minutes instead of 6.5 and gotten the same effect. Standouts: Live Forever, Supersonic, Slide Away, and Married With Children.
Sunshiiine.
A good listen. But spends alot of time trying to sound big. The lyrics kind of get drowned out.
The Masters of Brit-Pop.
Cacophonous start that was hard to get over. Eventually, the rest of the album grew on me, though.
Not bad, not great.
Meh not my vibe. Didn’t listen to all of it
Pretty good
Oasis didn't have an original bone in their body. They stole from the Beatles and other British invasion bands, updated their sound for the britpop wave of the '90s, and got away with it. And they did a damn good job at it too. A lot of the songs on their debut album is washed in a semi-shoegaze tone which ends up giving a lot of the songs here a samey sound. Combined with less developed songwriting skills and you have a somewhat forgettable album with a few decent standout songs. Shakermaker, Rock n Roll Star, and Supersonic showed the true potential for Oasis that would, in time, carry over into a classic album that would embody '90s UK rock for generations long after.
Married with Children - last track surprised me.
I am quite vocal about my dislike of Oasis. However, I forgot I had the single/EP? of Supersonic/Live Forever and I think Married With Children was in it back when in the 90s and I really liked it and they are all from this album. This was okay, but I still can’t stand the singing. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Supersonic Rating: 3
The best Oasis album by far, which isn't saying much.
The start to live forever might be the most gut wrenching, soul destroying start to any song. The terrible drum beat followed by the totally disheartening ‘ai sed, maaayyyybeeeee’ - makes me wish music didn’t exist. Still don’t quite get why this album is so highly rated or oasis for that matter. Can’t really see what they bought to anything apart from a generation of awful fans who are stuck in the past, poncing around with mop haircuts (wishing they were Paul Weller), wearing 90s lower league football away shirts in their worn bootleg jeans and worn adidas gazelle trainers. Still pretending that whatever either Gallagher brother does is actually relevant. Apparently it must be cool to love shit hair, shit shoes, shit football and shit music. Would be a better album without the overplayed singles that all sound the same. Listening to this was a terrible start to my honeymoon 3.4
Recorded horribly so sounds worse than it probably is. I still don't get why they were considered so incredible. They sound like an average band.
good!
Nostalgia
Rushed through this one as didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. Have the CD so familiar with the album. 7/10
It was good. I liked it. I like (what's the story) morning glory better though.
Most of the songs sound the same, but I do like their sound.
Eh. Not a huge Oasis fan
No sabía que Rock n' Roll Star de Kero Kero Bonito era un cover de Oasis (perdón). Me gustó más el anterior la verdad.
A decent album, but nonsense lyrics, overlong and a few songs that are a bit too close to influences e.g. T. Rex on Cigarettes and Alcohol
Angole ale całkiem sympatyczne
Whiny as ever. But better than whats the story morning glory
I’m not anti Oasis. But I listened to the 3.5 hour remastered extended version of this album. And it was too much Oasis.
Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Few notable songs among many that don't stand out from one another.
Easily my favorite of the 800 or so britpop albums on this list, which only sometimes feels like saying “this pebble permanently lodged in my shoe is surprisingly smooth”
It's fine. It came, it went, it had no impact on me. Middle of the road it is.
Salvo por algunos temas, como el anteúltimo, que son plenamente radio oasis y me parecen un asco, entre con mucho prejuicio y me terminó pareciendo un discazo
Guitars. I think the guitars themselves have guitars. Solid style. Really good guitars. Good drumming too. But have I mentioned the guitars? In terms of lyrics, it would be great if they broke out of the verse-chorus mode. Or maybe they just need some more guitars. One can forgive a lot with enough guitars.
Pretty good, I really like married with children
ok ...(.)
Favorite Tracks: Live Forever Rock ‘n’ Roll Star Married With Children
A lot of these tracks are OK, and some are even quite adequate.
It's competent rock music. I neither love nor hate it.
- The first time I heard of this website, I entered an email out of curiosity and this album is the first one that popped up. I was admittedly turned off because I did not want my first experience to be Oasis. - Some good tracks on here -- I heard "Live Forever" the first time in preparation for a guitar lesson. I also think "Bring It On Down" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" are relatively strong and stand on their own. - Second half is better than the first half...but it is still Oasis, which means I can take or leave Gallagher's voice and am never that impressed.
It's very good for a 90's mainstream alternative record which is not a category of music that particularly love
Pretty solid I guess, but I suppose I prefer Blur
Some good songs but nothing spectacular in any department
It’s ok. Not as good as its reputation
90iger Britpop. Damals schon sehr erfolgreich, überall präsent. Gehörte und gehöre nicht zur Zielgruppe dieses Genres.
Liked this one
All the sounds of “Morning Glory”, without any of the standout songs. Overall still good. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Better than I expected.
I listened to it. It was fine. I’ll probably never listen to it again because I’m just not that in to Oasis.
Hey....it's Oasis.
Best Song: Married With Children. I think I would have preferred a whole album of stripped-down tracks like this. Worst Song: Shakermaker. Every part of the song feels like it overstays its welcome. Overall: A bit slow and plodding. Not bad, just boring. As a non-Brit, the only thing that really stuck out to me was the unapologetically strong accent in the vocals.
My moms boyfriend’s favourite album lol It’s aight, be here now better
perfectly listenable! a bit nostalgic even
Excellent debut
Solid album. Big fan of Oasis, but this isn't one of their best albums. Their followup is a true 5 star album.
I never really got Oasis, largely because they sound sooo derivative. Oh, and Liam Gallagher is a 24 carat prick (with what our German cousins would call a "Backpfeifengesicht". Look it up.). Not totally without merit.
I thought I liked Oasis more than I actually do. This was just okay. 3/5
Whichever Gallagher does the singing just yells everything. If it wasn't due that I'd like Oasis a lot more.
Expected to love it, but it was just okay. Rock N Roll Star was the highlight. I can officially say that my stance on britpop is Pulp>>>>Blur>Oasis
Opens with the 'wall of sound' The album is heavier then I would of thought being familiar with the hit. A good album.
I’ve never listened to Oasis before. I was kind of surprised that I enjoyed the album.
Mostly liked how the sound is reminiscent of wonder wall. It was fine though
6/10. To be fair I may have to relisten as I was dealing with Aycen a lot of the album but overall it felt pretty bland when I was listening. Seemed to be decent tempo and flow together well but I’m not super motivated to give it a better listen.
Still tired of brit pop Listenable at least
Uncompelling rock Radio friendly product Guitar solos shine
Prima, maar niet super
Ещё один кактус для меня. Возможно, я просто недостаточно indie girl для Оазиса
Sounds sound kind of similar. And aaaaa aayyee day eh? Maybay
It was alright, there was one familiar song and the rest was a bit generic-sounding nowadays
Titled appropriately, I listened to it 3 times and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Although I liked the instrumentals, I didn't like the instrumental parts at the end of almost every song, they get too repetitive
didnt like it super much but I liked the vibe if the oasis album with wonderwall is on this list I will probably like it
Nice album, but not my style.
Vettafaen albumet var så generic
Good album. Not their best, though.
I liked the guitar sound and drum grooves.
no geral é um álbum bom. comecei a gostar mais quando começou ''live forever'' e depois ficou meio monótono de novo mas ai veio ''supersonic'' que eu amei.
It was good, a lot of the songs sounded the same.
I thought I was going to know this whole album but I confess I only really knew the hits. "Live Forever" always makes me feel really sad. Never understood the Blur/Oasis South/North rivalry - both great in their own very different ways
Besser als erwartet
I'm not the biggest fan of Oasis but they are worthy of a listen. A lot of similarities to other albums so I feel the boys were satisfying their album deal with tracks from their repertoire and tapes with this one.
Not bad.
Я люблю эту группу! звучит так, будто они были в полном беспорядке, но мне нравится то, чего они добивались. Мне нравились подобные группы, когда я был молодым.Сверхзвук звучит как прямой лифт Нирваны.
I can see why people like Oasis, but I did not particularly enjoy this album. The songs feel slow and largely uncreative instrumentally, so they rely on the whiny voice of the lead singer which I just don't enjoy too much. That said, it has some decent songs and none of it was god-awful.
Man. A whole can of worms with Oasis. It helps being a gen z American, to view this band outside of the social context they existed with in the UK in the 90’s. So there is some positives to this album and oasis in general. I think this was probably the baby boomers last time they ‘got’ the sound of pop radio music. Because this album definitely has some Beatles, classic rocknroll structure to it. And the songwriting at its core is really solid - it’s fleshed out pop and rock. But maaaaan. Did this really push pop music forward in any significant way? Does oasis even function as a gateway to anything else besides a look back at the rock that influenced them? Is that important? The sonic choices are so plain and polished to the extent that it washes away a lot of the impressive songwriting aspects about it. It makes you appreciate the Billie Eilish’s or Lady Gaga’s of the world that pushed their way into pop radio with great songwriting AND unique, forward thinking artistic/musical aesthetics (at least for pop standards). Really torn on oasis, always. Hard to separate how huge they were from a social standpoint, with how down the middle their music was
Kinda whiny, very Oasis. I liked it well enough but it's not like I'm gonna enter any of the songs into my personal rotation.
aight
Very bland
I know Oasis more from the drama around them than the music. My hope was that this album would change that but unfortunately it hasn't. While not bad none of the tracks were memorable. The album is a bit better than meh but not worth 4 stars.
Energetic. Like What’s the Stiry Morning Glory better
I am not a big fan of Oasis. It was great to listen to a whole album, as I think I only heard them in a video or perhaps on the radio.
I much prefer what's the story, but it's still enjoyable isn't it! Just not quite so banger filled
90's Alt rock not bad not amazing.
Music to drink Stella to
not too bad.
No thanks
3+
Not my favorite album from Oasis, but still high quality. The songs in this one blend together more so and on the other albums I've listened, though.
Like Oasis but LOVE the album after this. This is just ok.
I liked his voice but the majority of the songs did sound like he was going to break out singing “Wonderwall”. 6/10
Oasis has a sound that I do enjoy but even thought they're more of my speed/genre preference I don't keep many of their tracks in rotation. There is one song on here that stays on my playlists and it's no wonder it's one of their biggest songs. Overall a fine listen. 5/10
Some pretty solid tracks, even if it sometimes feels like there isn't a lot happening. There's some amount of filler, but nothing too egregious.
It was fine.
Oasis was forbidden music when I was growing up. My older brother had a sticker on his guitar that said "Oasis are shit", so this is what I believed. Definitely Maybe is the energy of my feelings about this album. It's fine. Not shit. I know I'll like the other one.
Highlights: Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Supersonic, Cigarettes and Alcohol. In a nutshell: in Noel’s words, sung by brother Liam “You’re not down with who I am. Look at you now, you’re all in my hands tonight”. Decent debut but it doesn’t have that “it still sounds as awesome as it did thirty years ago” feeling for me. Overall: 6/10
Good easy listening.
Decent start with shakermaker, falls off but ends with the 2 strongest songs. Overall ~meh
not oasis's best work but a solid album
I didnt like it too much, it wasnt awful, but I listened to the whole thing anyway.
everything sounded the same. It's not bad by any means but nothing is jumping out on first listen
Some good songs! First exception of British singing bad not being constantly droning so far Would listen again
feel free to take my english card away but this was my first time listening all the way through to this album and oasis finally clicked for me. without all of the posturing, the showbiz headlines and bad press about the brothers, the guitar tones and parts sounded incredible. slightly nostalgic because my friend lewis picked live forever as his funeral song and his coffin entered the church. i had a little chuckle when it come on. i really, really enjoyed this and felt like it made me understand my culture and the cult of oasis more
It was ok!!!! pretty good but not my fav. cool debut but none of the hits!
Meh
I had never heard of them, listened for a bit, and lost interest. They had some skills but it did not engage with me, that's all.
Great straightforward rock record with tons of memorable hooks. All songs are at least good but Live Forever, Slide Away and Supersonic really stand out to me. Oasis haven’t quite hit their peak at this point but for a debut album this is extremely impressive. Very strong 3 stars here, much closer to a 4 than a 2.
Fine
My first review in my 1001 albums, so I’m going mid ground to calibrate my ratings. Great album - I did listen while working so it became upbeat background music.
Quintessential 90's rock. No surprises but steady beats help the album flow from beginning to end. I felt they saved the best song for last
Finde die vocals nervig, letzter Vokal immer ewig lang gestreckt. Ansonsten ok, aber nichts besonderes. 2,9.
About average. Nothing really wowed me.
Definitely maybe a good album
A solid album. I liked every song but didn’t particularly love any
so mittel
Not a bad debut. A little derivative. Song writing got way better on their next album What's the Story Morning Glory.
High production value, but most songs sound very similar. Didn’t really notice as the album played on - felt like one long, overdriven, basic power chord rock. 🤷🏼♂️
Was ok - didn’t know any of the songs on the album. Kinda a sleeper but didn’t have the urge to press skip either. Good background for putting away groceries.
Memories of my freshman year of college. Supersonic was the jam. I like the album overall but it doesn't hit as hard now as it used to.
Oasis hit the scene during my college years. They had several hits, but they also had tremendous egos. It’s part of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. I didn’t mind except that they were nearly blasphemous in their desire to outdo the Beatles. Secretly, I did enjoy their music. This albums got plenty of classic guitar riffs. I find at my advancing age, it actually gets a little loud. I don’t even necessarily main volume, just noisy. Overall, pretty good stuff.
90 rockki ,, pehmeä rokki ja peukkua pystyssä minulla, peukut pystyssä.. vituttaa sen verran sanon... britpp indiea. hyvin lähellä että voisi antaa puhdasta, helppoa ykköstä rintalihakseeen tikaten.. mutta cracker bändi taittaa tästä kuunneltavan kokemuksen. ei missään maailmassa kuitenkaan ansaitse mitään vitos ympyrärunkkailua.. hohhoijjaa sanon live forever
Ya know I liked listening to this album but no 👍s. Still could sit back and listen to it though.
Perhaps go to the concert in Belfast? Bangers on this album, though some songs are misses, and the mixing is a bit muddied. Might be good with bigger speakers. Seems to be a raw album
Listened to lots before. 90s Brit Pop classic
Not as good as the last one
Not bad
Classic tracks just a shame I find it duller than dishwater
Pretty not bad album.
It's no Morning Glory
Está bueno la verdad, Vico dijo que sonaba a melancolía. Lindo himno Married with children
This isn't my favorite offering from Oasis but it seems like it's a foundational album for the band. You can hear a more raw version of what their sound would become on the follow up "What's The Story Morning Glory?". Some strong songs on the album but again, it really seemed as though they were finding their sound on this one with a couple misses in the mix. Standout Tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic, Cigarettes & Alcohol
Je pense qu'il y a une raison qu'Oasis est le band de britpop le plus populaire, mais ça reste un son tellement safe et peu original. C'est super bien produit, mais j'ai toujours l'impression c'est un peu la même chose. 6/10
Hooky but not landing as well as I hoped lacking a little bite and dragged on a little. An album where I liked the deeper cuts a bit more than the singles. Definitely concocted by a couple of bell heads. (Don't google that) Maybe fairly decent in places. 6/10
The songs sound pretty similar, but it's a good first album
Definitely maybe not needed on this list (2.5/5)
Fav song: live forever
3/5. I really enjoyed the first few songs, but I found the album to be too repetitive thereafter.
7/10 - Good rock album - Alternative in parts but decent acoustic jams
Oasis is the best band since the Beatles! I listened to this one in the car from Austin to Boerne on low-volume while my child slept. While I couldn't turn it up to review the mix or listen as intense as I could have.. I will say the band is very much the same as the album Morning Glory, which is the one I'm more familiar with. I suppose this was the British counter to Kurt Cobain since its 1994. A response to grunge. Best Track: Supersonic
I remember when everyone was saying that Oasis was going to be the next Beatles. Not a chance. But although not Beatles-worthy, this album isn’t bad. It also isn’t as good as their next one.
I definitely liked the album, maybe
I was a bit dismissive of Oasis at their peak, possible teen prejudice against the mainstream. Since then I have really appreciated some of their work. The opening of this album is full of the dross that turned me off as a kid, droning jangly treble soaked guitar and monotonous lyrics that I'm mostly disinterested in. I guess the magic happened on their second release. Blur FTW!
catchy
3.7
Not the most dynamic band. Most songs sound exactly the same. Still some good nostalgia from this record though.
Known before: Band/some songs Standouts: Live Forever; 5.5/10
Known before: Band + some songs Standouts: 03. Live Forever Rating: 6.0
Known Before: Band/Some songs Standouts: 3. Live Forever 6. Supersonic 6.0
Album has a whole lot of a psychadelic Beatles vibes. Sort of a lack of diversity in the sound but can tell how influential it was for bands like the vines, fratellis, Arctics, we are scientists etc. Cool sound that was existing at the same time as grunge in US.
Definitely not (to my taste).
Not my favorite oasis album, a little too whiny for me but supersonic is a classic
Okay 5/10
Rock N’ Roll Star - 8.5/10 Shakermaker - 8/10 Live Forever - 9/10 Up in The Sky - 8.5/10 Columbia - 8/10 Supersonic - 8.5/10 Bring it On Down - 8.5/10 Cigarettes & Alcohol - 8/10 Digest’s Dinner - 8.5/10 Slide Away - 8.5/10 Married with Children - 8/10 TOTAL - 84/110
beetje gay
I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic. Leuke teksten, beetje gay stem zoals Louis zei maar dat vind ik wel iets hebben. Gelaagd debuutalbum.
Grey and dreary. Not for me.
#19. I'm glad we were getting Alice in Chains and Nirvana in the 90s while the Brits were stuck with Oasis and Suede and such. Because you could listen to grunge and 90s alternative on repeat until forever. And while this is fine or whatever, no one wants to listen to Oasis on repeat. This is grocery store music at its most inoffensive peak. 3/5: acceptable
Product of its time - nostalgic
Guitars sound like pudding, production is just splash splash splash turn it up to 11, the borrows from T Rex, George Harrison and the New Seekers - its a muddy, derivative album but there's something in this rock and roll swagger and attitude that captures the imagination and you can see the appeal of this Don't Give A Toss attitude from the Gallaghers - no art school graduates here. Definitely (maybe?) feels this captures a particular time, atmosphere and mood and perhaps with time, the shine has dulled the impact the album once had - and arguably, their second album was their finest.
Not bad, I can see how it's on the list but it's not going to be one of my favorite. It's got a very unique sound and the energy is undeniably great. I think "positive grunge" is just has some innate dissonance baked into it.
Good but not that good
Pas mal mais un petit peu trop homogène, toutes les tounes finissent par se ressembler
But what about morning glory ?
Not quite as good as What’s the Story, but some good tracks. The mix feels over compressed, sometimes bordering on shoegaze with its “Wall of sound”.
6.5/10 Energetic, dense, predictable Highlights: - Rock n Roll Star - Supersonic
Will still defend this as a good album. Northern brashness and defiance after years of Thatcher and the Tories. It'll never sound as good as it did then, and obviously it's heavily derivative, but for a while it made it sound new and full of scornful energy.
Such a simple, easy album. It's reminiscent and inspiring at times. I won't Lauren often but it's good every 10 years or so.
Oh look, it’s everyone’s favourite whiny pop rock singalong group! It really is nothing special, Coldplay with attitude
Such a piece of very specific sonic time.
Not my cup of tea, but pretty cool for 94. Arctic monkeys sounds like this
Pretty good rock album, definitely sounds like oasis which is not my favorite in general
If What's The Story was much better than I remembered, Definitely Maybe was much worse. Some good heavy riffs but the lyrics are terrible. I wouldn't be bothered about revisiting.
Just okay.
Hated them, loved them, largely indifferent to them now. This is their best record. Heard this through other people's speakers far too many times now, but skipping through the opening of each track I count only Digby's Diner as filler, which no doubt someone would retort that it is the mystical key to their magical cabinet. …yet after a track and a half I felt too bored to continue.
Some good rock here. Nothing fancy but not terribly exciting or engaging either.
I never got into Oasis because they're whiny assholes and were a bit before my time. Big influencers and an album that should be in the project, but it just doesn't really go anywhere. It was... fine. None of the big Oasis hits I know of, but still well put together musically. There's a lot more complexity to it than it leads on, but the whole album feels like it was made to be nonchalant in the epitomic British way. Can't believe some people are willing to vote for this as the best album of all time
Some good songs but it’s hard work
A classic. It rocks, it rolls, not much else to say. I think if I was a teenager in 1994's England this would easily be among my favorite albums of all time, but I'm just a different demographic. I never noticed how Liam Gallagher says MAYBEEYYYY in Live Forever the same way as he says it in Wonderwall.
1st listen -- Rock N Roll Star very generic, Shakermaker more to my taste but a bit repetitive, Live Forever easy listening, cool, Up In The Sky originally sounding very American, Columbia a bit different, cool, Supersonic alright, like the chorus, Bring It On Down cool guitar, Cigarettes & Alcohol too American, Digsy's Dinner more English, upbeat, cool, love the sound and piano is interesting, Slide Away sounds a bit like Dire Straits at the beginning but not sure, love the vibe, Married With Children sounds like a bit of Cobain (Lithium etc)
I've never listened to anything by them beyond their radio hits, and surprisingly I didn't hate this.
Heard one or two songs you've heard em all, but yknow not bad Oasis is Oasis
Meh. British pop rock. Didn't stand out to me.
Easy to see why Oasis became had such a strong breakthrough with this album. Many simple yet well crafted songs for an audience that want something new to listen to but nothing too bold and daring. Personal preference but the album is far less interesting than a lot of the work that came before from numerous other bands on Creation Records
Good alternative rock muddied by Liam Gallagher's annoying as hell voice. I'm not saying I don't like any bands with subpar vocals but the overall compositions don't stand out enough for me to totally look past it
Oasis not quite at the top of their game. You can see hints of what's coming with their sophomore release, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Best cuts: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Side Away Worst cut: Shakermaker
Although it was good, this was a tad too long and a tad too generic. At some point my attention was lost. This entire spectrum of '90s rock is easily my favorite realm of music, but there are plenty of records that are better than this debut. I know that more of Oasis' hits are in the latter albums, so let's see if those records meet the hype. They should, because Noel and Liam talk too much smack for guys who make middling music with the ocassional banger. Standout tracks are Live Forever & Supersonic.
Yeah. It's an Oasis album. I've never really been a big fan, but I get why people like it.
It’s no What’s the Story but it has its moments.
Enjoyable enough until you realise its all the same song (with one or two exceptions) and gets very boring.
Some awesome songs on here so it was a good listen all the way through
fine but a bit one note innit?
Honestly I couldn’t really get behind his voice. I love the rock aspect, it’s been a long time since I have had that, but his voice is just so monotone and hard to ignore. Replace him and very good.
Hate the singers voice. Album is all right though.
Not the best Oasis album but there's some decent tracks.
It's good but doesn't leave me dying to go back for another listen. Oasis' vocalists have always kind of annoyed me
They're good but this album is nowhere near as good as What's the Story
avg
unfortunately this is another example of a Band I really like and they have an album I love front to back .. but this wasn't the album. So the whole time I'm thinking to myself, it's ok I guess but man I'd love to hear those other songs. This album was meh for me.
If I had to pick a British pop rock darling's debut record that shamelessly steals from the Beatles, I would much rather have listened to Flyte's The Loved Ones. That being said it's certainly not a bad album by any stretch, it just doesn't resonate much with me. When a song started I'd be like "oh that's new" but by the time it ended I couldn't remember how differed at all from what I'd previously heard. The songs have pretty accessible hooks though, and there's a great energy/momentum to the whole thing, thinking especially of the track sequencing (more cohesive than WTSMG), muddy guitar tones and overall production. Just like with Death Cab for Cutie, with a different, less nasal vocalist I think I'd probably like Oasis a lot more. In fact know that's true cuz Jet's Get Born a decade later is arguably derivative of Definitely Maybe in places and I don't have the same qualms. Here I have trouble understanding what Liam's saying half the time cuz he can't resist turning every vowel into a diphthong - over the roar of the guitars it's a total wash. I do think it's worthwhile in general to have the debut albums of wildly successful bands on the list, even if their creative peak is still to come. Here for example it was cool to learn how self assured they were about their sound, right from the jump. Would be a 3.5 if I could, as its better than average, but no true standouts for me.
