Reviews (page 6 of 14)
Pretty good. I didn't realize that Morning Glory wasn't their first album. This is not as good as that, but you can see where those highs came from.
8/10 Favorite Tracks: Rock 'n' Roll Master, Up in the Sky, Supersonic, Cigarettes & Alcohol Least Favorite: Shakermaker, Married With Children
Good album. Knew and like most of the tracks.
7.5
Pretty awesome music!
I've not heard much Oasis (wrong place wrong time) and never would have hunted this up to listen to it. But (to my sincere surprise) it's perfectly good. I'm glad I heard it before I died. Best song: Supersonic.
Faves: supersonic, live forever, slide away
A bunch of great songs on here, my favorite Oasis album. Live Forever is my favorite Oasis song and other songs like Cigarettes & Alcohol and Roll n Roll Star are really enjoyable as well. It does suffer from the things all Oasis albums suffer from though. The songs are too long winded and noodly at points, the mixing is incredibly loud and there's way too much going on soundwise. The streaming version of this album also seems to have long silent breaks between every song that ruin the flow. A bunch of bangers still.
So pure and innocent in a way most music really wasn't at the time. A little rough and tumble. But that only adds to it.
Day 26: Definitely Maybe - Oasis. Oasis album 1/2. Oasis may be the most recognizable Britpop band of all time. This album is a fairly pleasant and energetic album. While I do prefer (What's the Story?) Morning Glory, this album is still a nice listen. This is a great album, in my opinion. The Gallagher brothers don't necessarily have a reputation of being peaceful with each other. I am quite glad that they have made music together at all. I'm aware about an upcoming Oasis reunion tour. I find the lyrics of several of the songs on this album to be quite silly. This is unrelated, but I used to like imagining a random modern-day pop song sampling the song "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" by T. Rex, and screaming "Oh, my god! They sampled Bang a Gong (Get It On)" at the radio if it were to play. When Cigarettes & Alcohol began playing, I thought to myself: "Oh, shit! A popular song that samples "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" actually exists!". Anyway, thank you for reading my empty review. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 4/5.
Really good album. I had not dug deep into Oasis beyond the singles despite the peak of their popularity being during my teens, but worth getting into.
Heard it before. First two Oasis albums are really solid. But I think I like Morning Glory more than Definitely Maybe. Still, some great songs on this one and a nice time. 4/5
Oasis may be a meme, but they can really rock. Supersonic and a few other songs are just flirting with that same early-90s space rock revival sound that the Verve were perfecting on A Storm In Heaven and A Northern Soul. Oasis just didn't lean into the distortion as much as other bands during this time which is probably why they came out of the decade as the most popular. 4/5
I had not understood the hype for Oasis before this (after all, Wonderwall is an overplayed meh of a song). But now I think I get it.
Great record
Nobody bothered to tell these lads they weren't famous yet. So much swagger, rock n roll fun. Cigarettes & Alcohol, baby.
Maybe
Goes pretty hard, tbh. It's utterly mindless and pretty derivative but a good time nonetheless.
They’re the new Beatles. And by that I mean they’re British and nothing else
I've never listened to Oasis and completely wrote them off from hearing Wonderwall about 650 times each year. I was wrong, at least on this album. It's a great one. Oasis definitely deserve their love.
Four star record, nothing more. There are a bunch of great songs and then a few okay songs, that seem to run in that order.
this bangs, but morning glory better
It’s alright, not bad
Oasis may not have reinvented the circle, but they made the circle sound pretty good. Although Liam is some arsehole, and I can't really like them that much... the music shines through. I can see how it appeals to the audience it appeals to. Everyone needs art they can relate to. Columbia as my favourite of the album. Solid stuff.
Wait, is Oasis actually good? This was a nice excuse to finally dig into them a bit, as the schtick of them being Beatles derivatives is something that should make them up my alley. Originally was annoyed with the drawling whiny singing but the music is honestly good. I better not just rate all these albums 4 stars.
There are some great songs on this album (Live Forever, Slide Away, Supersonic, Whatever, Married With Children, some others), but there are also a few songs that aren't nearly as good. If you don't mind Liam's voice, then there's a lot to love about this band
I could live forever listening to Live Forever Rest of the album pretty cool too, plus my family likes Oasis :)
Very solid. The kind of album that makes you want to check out more of a bands works.
not the best Oasis but still Oasis
Duro
Not my thing, but great pop rock! Nice melodies and song writing. 8/10
I really enjoyed this album, there were a couple songs that were just "eh" to me, but the ones I liked, I liked a lot. Oasis definitely has their sound figured out, but this album hardly feels repetitive. It did make me interested to listen to more Oasis to see what their range would be. I'd give this a 4.7/5, I thought I knew what I was getting into coming in, and I was right, but I wasn't disappointed.
Never dug much into Oasis, outside of the radio songs and the song from the Snatch Soundtrack, but I really liked this one. "Live Forever" still slaps. Other favorites: "Slide Away", "Supersonic", "Cigarettes & Alcohol" I don't know if it's because it's more electric, more melodic, or just more consistent, but I prefer this to Parklife. These reviews should probably be in a vacuum, but since the 1,001 albums gods decided to bless up with both 1994 Britpop classics this week, I feel the need to draw the comparison. This album makes me want to dig into more Oasis....and watch Snatch again.
What else was I gonna give this
Songs too long with repetitive guitar breaks Most songs similar Catchy Live forever and slide away class
Good, but great? I’ll have to listen to it when it’s not on my phone’s speaker while I’m cooking. I can see how this might be formative to someone in college in the mid-90s. But some of the songs ran together for me, and the sound mixing was spotty—at times too much guitar and not enough vocals.
Gonna try dynamic reviewing. If the majority consider it a five star classic, inspiring an overlooked generation failed by 15 years of Tory policies, I'll give it three stars for balance and wang on about how Pulp are far superior. If the majority consider it an uncreative rock plodder for basic lads, I'll give it five stars and hail the charisma of the Gallaghers and their ability to connect with so many people in a meaningful way.
Got distracted Should've acted The boys And their toys Whiney Nasal Catchy Basal 4*
Horrible personalities, good music
Hell yes Oasis!!!!! Easy four stars, if only for the way Liam pronounces every line on Cigarettes and Alcohol (my fave track).
No doubt this has some fun moments, but it's still pretty rough. I think a solid producer could have bumped this material up a notch, as there are some great moments dulled by some poor production choices. For instance, there is no song here that should have been over 4 min. Some good foreshadowing of what was to come for this band though.
Excellent, fun album. At least four or five excellent tracks.
Oasis were a constant soundtrack to my teenage years. Not by choice, they were everywhere. My best mates adored them. Still do. That gives them a certain affection for me. A reminder of my youth. I know it all without trying. Do I actually like the music? No, I don't think I do ... but it's kind of undeniable in it's existence.
I've never been the biggest Oasis fan, but there were more good tracks on here than I'd remembered.
Great album but the next one is my favorite.
solid album
relatively laid back and enjoyable album that succinctly presents the Oasis britpop sound mixed with watered down grunge elements and indie folk that create for an easy listen.
hey, this was really good!
by all accounts the oasis brothers seem to be nasty little fuckers, but yeah, this was a good album. not great, and not groundbreaking, and actually, i can't really put my finger on why i liked it so much when i really think about it. but a 4 star album nonetheless!
Awesome
In the mid-90s, Oasis was introduced by the British media as nothing less than the second coming of The Beatles. It was this lofty claim that made it almost impossible for their debut LP to live up to the hype. Definitely Maybe doesn’t break any new ground, though does a good job combining the history of Brit-rock (from the poppier end of The Beatles to the rockier end of The Rolling Stones), occasionally mixing in the wall-of-sound psychedelia of shoegaze and late-80’s jangle rock, a testament to Noel Gallagher’s ability to write the heck out of a song. Though it is this confluence of influences that make this album sort of boring. There’s not much in the way of innovation and it all feels like a patische of 90s British rock. In fact, it feels very much like the bridge between Radiohead’s Pablo Honey and The Bends. While it inches towards genius it never quite gets there since it’s bogged down by the band’s influences. 3.7 out of 5
I don't think I'd ever heard any of the songs on this album, but I know their second album, What's the Story, pretty well. I liked this album a lot and listened to it twice. Four stars.
Classic
Oasis is in my opinion very overrated, while they do have a pretty alright dicography i would choose bands like Pulp and Blur over Oasis any day. I just don't get the hype around them and they're comeback. Still though this is probably one of the best Britpop albums ever made but after this one it all went downhill.
Good stuff here, but suspect their second album is better, just due to its having their two monster hits. Solid songs, great musicianship. Didn’t realize Noel wrote all the songs.
I was the biggest Oasis hater until one day it all just culminated and clicked. These guys aren't just the Wonderwall guys, they're the true definition of bejeweled and chaotic rockstars just absolutely kicking ass and taking names. I love Oasis now and am eager to catch them live when they come to America. Now speaking musically, its highly energetic, lush, a bit nostalgia, as if a wall of sound is crashing over you. The drums could use a tinge more, and maybe bass tuned up a bit but it was the 90's. Even Oasis a British band was affected by the loundess and compression woes. Liam Gallagher raspy yet melodic voice match with Noel's pretty dynamic instrument stylings pay homage to the old masters of the craft and bring back no bollocks rock and roll to our ears in the 1990's.
Good album, exactly what you’d expect from Oasis. However, I prefer ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory’
Really great, fun album. Will definitely get some replays and I’m interested in checking out more of their stuff.
they sound more like blur than i realized. really liked married with children
I liked some of the songs but it’s not as good as the other album
If you can start your music career with the song Rock'n'Roll star, you're doing something right.
Married with Children and Live Forever were my favorites. We’ve been on an Oaisis kick lately, so it was nice to listen to some of their music that I didn’t know before.
Felt very British youth, like the Arctic Monkeys album but for a different generation. Some of the vocals reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins. Glad I listened to this since they recently announced the reunion tour. High 4.
Pretty much what I’d expect from oasis. Nothing groundbreaking, but the music was good
What can you say? Some of the theft is painful. But elsewhere the shine is truly through. Not sure it’s consistent though, but damn deserves 4 for the songs I’ll sing my children.
Rian Johnson's Columbo homage Poker Face has a murder happen to an ambitious, rowdy drummer in what Rian Johnson thinks is a glam metal band, killed over a single that would rocket him to stardom and not the rest of the band. while hanging with the murder victim, Charlie Cale (played by Natasha Lyonne in all the scrappy charm she can muster) notices that he basically writes his songs by stitching together whatever he sees, leading to a hilarious scene where she picks through his trash and finds out the lyrics to his song are lifted wholesale from whatever bullshit he had crumpled in his pocket. it's not a bad song, he just wrote it by stealing bits and pieces of whatever he sees. he's a magpie. i would say Oasis function as a group of Magpies. they take a little bit of Ride, a few bits and baubles from the Beatles, an intro from "Bang a Gong (Get It On), and an entire verse from a Coke commercial to make their nest, and it's a perfectly fine nest. maybe a few of the bits woven into it prick you when you sit down, but it's quite roomy and thick and there's plenty of room for you to lean back and watch Liam and Noel peck each other's eyes out. overall, i am entertained. this is probably a masterpiece if you're a little wasted and know the words. however, there's something real hard to stomach about Definitely Maybe it is something i like to call "oops, it's shoegaze", and i don't really mean this as a compliment. aside from the subtle Ride influence, any DNA this shares with the aforementioned genre appears to be completely accidental. the guitar seems to be that loud because the band thought it was a good volume to put it at, and i respect their decision, but it does make sitting through this record a bit of an endurance test. these are probably pretty good songs they duct taped together, but the sheer sound of them makes me want to drop a few so my ears aren't being burnt alive for as long. spoiler for the Poker Face episode btw: the band gets busted not because they murdered their magpie, but because his hit had its melody wholly lifted from the theme to Benson, thus scoring them a class-action lawsuit instead of a record deal. unfortunately, they lack the half a million Oasis paid Coca-Cola with over "Shakermaker". whoops!
A very good album, but What's the Story is their best. Mid to high fours
Great album. Bring It On Down is a personal favourite 4/5
Quality
The OG of Britpop. Liam’s voice is a bit grating, but the music is great. Quintessentially British. Very cool, excellent album. Just not super exciting.
Oasis IS Britpop. Regardless of how one feels about the group, they are what most think of when it comes to this era of Britpop explosion/revival in the 90's. There's just a little more polish with them and the guitars are heavier than most of the other acts. Once again, another example of a group finding their footing pretty much right out of the gate. Sure, some of the lyricism is pretty nonsensical (i.e. the enunciation in "Cigarettes & Alcohol" is pretty funny), but it's a righteous romp mostly all the way through. Singles such as "Live Forever" and "Supersonic" highlight the record, but some of the lesser known tracks I personally enjoyed were "Rock 'n' Roll Star" and "Slide Away". The Gallagher brothers were/are pretty insufferable, but they, along with "Bonehead", "Guigsy", and McCarroll created something good here. And boy, they were just getting started too...
Eh. Oasis. I get why it was popular but that's just it it. Was.
Just a fun rock album.
Maybe I've been too harsh on these guys. Being British and having everyone sing the big 2 oasis songs at me has poisoned my mind, it seems. I actually enjoyed it! They do have a unique sound, something bright and polished with an edge. Very solid
So klingt Britrock, Britpop?
Enjoyable tunes. Had a fun time listening but not super memorable.
Thought this would be a terrible listen, but honestly some really good stuff on this album
Live Forever Supersonic
did you know oasis came from Manchester? listened to this while I was stomping to work and felt like a local fave songs: - supersonic - bring it on down - married with children
Thinking back to being 13 and stealing all of my step dad’s oasis CDs LOL This is such a good album, 4.5 Favs: rock n roll star, shakermaker, live forever, up in the sky, Columbia, supersonic, cigarettes and alcohol and slide away
4.5/5 I knew I would really love Oasis, but I stopped myself from having an Oasis phase when I was 15 because I didn't want to be a cliche... I regret that now. I wish I had more years of enjoying their discography. I'm glad I have to listen now - I loved this so much. I feel sick with nostalgia thinking about the UK this album was made in, though. I don't have the energy to explain further but I'm sure others understand. Standout tracks: - Live forever - Supersonic - Bring it on down - Slide away (lead guitar 10/10)
Catchy. Not maybe my most gripping but I liked it just fine. Good as background
Not a huge Oasis fan but there's some good stuff here.
Good stuff here.
Great album consistently good songs, potentially too consistent as they did start sounding very similar or like all tunes started merging to one but overall great album
8/10. :) It features some nice melodies, and some great songs. :)
Klassiker
Great first album for Oasis. Includes the classic single Live Forever. Rocks all the way through.
Rock 'n' Roll Star Shakermaker Live Forever Supersonic Cigarettes & Alcohol Slide Away
Yeah decent, was like if Rolling Stones and Beatles had a baby band Liam Gallagher is a funny bugger and a nonce
Lad rock goes hard on a Friday after listening to rock slop the past 3 days. Going home and Cigarettes & Alcohol probs the most memorable out of them all. What a nice band, I’m sure I’ll be listening to them again in a reasonable amount of time 😁
Really enjoyed it...guess I should be listening to more Britpop.
Really enjoyed it...guess the sense I should be listening to more Britpop.
Yeah, it's good
On the very day that they released tickets for their reunion as well. Tricky one to handle impartially - there's no denying the cultural impact they had, although whether unleashing hoards of lads and ladettes on the world was a good thing, who can say. In the cold light of day, a lot of this is pretty pedestrian but, and I hate myself for it, there's no denying that Liam's snarl and Noel's riff on the opening track are a powerful force. Didn't we *all* want to be rock and roll stars with unlimited amounts of cigarettes and alcohol. Obviously tainted by the past 20 odd years of Gallagher brother helmetry, but the furore for tickets shows they're still a force.
Thoughts before listening: It is appropriate that I get this album today since Oasis announced their reunion yesterday. Massive album by a massive band for my generation that I never actually owned. I know all the hits by Oasis and I think I've probably listened to the album on Spotify before, but it just wasn't something I gravitated to when it came out. I'm going to say this will be a 4-star album...really good but not quite an all time great. Review: Oasis often gets lumped into the 90s Britpop world with bands like Blur, but Oasis is head and shoulders above their peers. This is a full fledged rock n roll band releasing catchy songs built to be played to arenas while those other bands, as I have learned from this project, tend to come off as sophomoric indie rock groups with more ideas than songs. No wonder the Gallagher brothers were so cranky about the constant comparisons. While Oasis' second album would have most of their iconic hits, this, their debut, certainly has its share of great songs. "Rock n Roll Star", "Live Forever", "Supersonic", and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" are the best tracks, but this is a very nice album with no real clunkers. I'm sticking with my initial instinct and giving this 4-stars.
First heard cigarettes and alcohol on some compilation in the mid 90s. Didn't get round to this album until after What's the story blew up and the oasis/blur feud. It's a decent enough album, strange how this band is the one that took the most plaudits of the britpop era.
I had heard a bunch of Oasis songs before- it was nice to listen to an album thay didnt contain all their bog hits. I can see how this one launched their career- it had a lot of catchy songs. They have a distinct sound for the times. Overall enjoyed it a lot- torn between 3 and 4 but going to upgrade to 4
Britpop from his finest…no more, no less…7/10
Major 90s record right here.
Why am I feeling nostalgic listening to this? I wasn't even into Oasis when this came out. I guess it's one of those cultural things that creeps up on you over the years.
A good album, I liked Rock'n'Roll Star, Columbia and Bring It On Down.
I usually make somewhat jokey comments about how I don't like Oasis, but I do enjoy their songs really. Whilst it might not be the most impressive album, it is good for a debut, particularly when their sound would have been quite fresh back in the 90s. The guitars are good, the vocals are Mancunian, and the vibe is peak 90s Britain. Just fun really.
This is unexpectedly exciting. Oasis pushes the poppy British alt-rock (Stone Roses, Blur) into a less profound but bigger-sounding, more entertaining place. It's catchy, crunchy, and a bit chippy as well. Having never heard anything by Oasis before except for the overplayed and milquetoast Wonderwall, I had no idea they had such a gigantic wall of guitar sound - and I do love a wall of guitar. More Kinks than Beatles, but also neither of those. Deservedly on the Great British Rock Bands Continuum® "Definitely, Maybe" is surprisingly excellent. Never a dull moment, this entertaining record has some nice songwriting that finds a way to fit the singer's rather limited voice into their schema. Of course as an American, we were denied this record, even though it sold 7082 billion in the UK, because it was too British. I say that facetiously (a word which I did spell without help just now, thank you!) but Americans in 1994 were looking for the next Kurt and this was consciously not it. THANKS A LOT music marketers in the 90s :( . Ended up missing out on this, Blur, and god knows what else! I suppose I will find out - god bless the list. May the force be with you.
Classic album.
mixing/mastering aside, I love this album.
wait has oasis been good this whole time?
Lots of very good songs.
The sound of baggy suits, fat ties, fabulous hair, and bending like Beckham.
Always loved that album, sometimes more than Morning Glory... There's a feeling of being young, angry and not giving a fuck about anything in it that I crave a lot, even if I hate Noel Gallagher for that exact reason.
I never really liked Oasis back in the day.. maybe I should have been listening harder... I like both brothers bands now, and really enjoyed this trip back to their beginnings.. Liked it a lot.
One of those albums that will forever be associated with the whole Britpop genre/movement and spawned a thousand copycats. They had a formula and they delivered on it again and again. For me, there are a handful of mediocre songs here and as perfect as Liam Gallagher's vocals were for the band, they are also an acquired taste and bring back memories of what an arrogant, insufferable nugget he was as well. Noel could certainly turn a tune though and they captured a moment brilliantly.
I had the 12” of Cigarettes and Alcohol as a teen, and I symbolically destroyed it to show my disdain for Oasis. Who’s laughing now lads?
This is really good. There's tons of great songs with catchy hooks. It's also really rocking in places, which I hadn't necessarily always attributed to Oasis. I think I'm overcoming my Oasis prejudice and coming to realise that they really did deserve to be as big as they were. They're still not a go-to band for me, but I do really appreciate the quality here. 4.5 rounded down.
it jams
Yeah, that was quite fun. It's messy, unpolished, and great for it.
Not my favorite by them, but still a good debut that sounds good. Crazy what they did to improve within a year for their next album.
Alright music to wake up to
Forgot how good this one was
I'm looking past all of the band's background drama, bad attitudes and blatant song rip-offs (I detected T-Rex and classic Coke commercial rip-offs on this one) and I'm just going on the music alone. I can easily roll with this, it was good album. I'd definitely listen to this again.
Wasn’t sure what to expect. Always thought what’s the story morning glory was above average, but didn’t really get the hype about Oasis. Took me a couple songs to get into it and accidentally listened twice due to a work thing. Really grew on me. Liked the full sound and could feel their influences, while it still felt like a unique sound. Could hear some Beatles, Bowie, Sex Pistols and it went a lot harder than I expected. Solid 4 for me
Really nice
How much you like this album is how much you like the blend of more modern stylings of rock and classic British albums like Revolver (Beatles), Ziggy Stardust (Bowie), and London Calling (The Clash). For me, I really liked this blend and I think it gets pulled off well.
This is the album from Springsteen that I know the least so it was nice to rediscover it.
I enjoyed this album…I knew some Oasis but didn’t know this album at all. I enjoyed. I did not enjoy it as much as some of their greatest songs, but overall, it’s a great listen for me.
Might be the best Oasis record out there.
Great album terrible mastering
When you combine the cock of the walk swagger of the Stones and fuck you sneering of Johnny Rotten you get a solid slab of rock and roll. There aren't any 'hit singles' on this album to burn out on and that makes it a more enjoyable listen for me. 30 years on and this record still holds up.
Good
Very good album. Solid rock Pop. Made me think of the White Denim album we recently heard. This was tightly produced like that but it had what White Denim was missing even if White Denim was higher on the musicianship scale. Oasis had punchy solos and riffs that stood out and were memorable and catchy. I call it Jangly Hooks. I really wish we could give 1/2 stars because this was a 3 & 1/2.
Rating - 7.5/10 Favourite songs - Rock 'n' roll star, Live Forever, Supersonic, Slide away, Married with children
Good
Oasis, a classic of the Britrock scene, and their debut album Definitely Maybe cemented them right at the top of the classics. Before all their troubles and brotherly infighting, they were able to create and encapsulate the sound of Manchester, exported to the world. It's easy to see why they have had an enduring legacy for the last 30+ years. Best: Supersonic Worst: Bring It On Down 4.5 Stars
Oasis is really enjoyable, but I have to admit that a lot of their songs sound the same to me. At least it's a good sound.
As someone who supposedly doesn't care for Oasis... I enjoyed this a great deal more than I could have expected! :) I appreciate them more as a group now I've heard more than the singles. :)
It's a triple album, with over 40 songs. It's too many. Maybe I'll give it another chance sometime, but for now it just felt a lot. The ones I listened though were pretty good.
Personally I don't go crazy for this album except for some good stuff, that are now after 20 yrs, are classic. 3.5/5
Is this album on the list twice? Or was it just all the clones. I don’t know, but I respect Oasis and I think this is their best album. Some very great songs on this one.
Great opening track, favorite oasis album top to bottom.
# Playlist track - Supersonic # Notes - Super nostalgic, but still rocks! - The "maybeeee" opening from Live Forever makes me want to sing "Wonderwall" -1 star
As much I want to dislike it, this still stands up.
Oasis made such a pivot from the 80s into the 90s. This is a really good (and obviously very popular) album, pretty much beginning to end. It sort of skirts the line between mainstream rock and punk a bit, but still stays true to who Oasis was as a band. A really enjoyable listen.
Like: - Bring it on down (the hives-like bridge) - Live Forever - Slide Away - Married with children - Supersonic
First listen Saved 8/11 Top track: Live Forever
Yes, the fact that EVERY word at the end of a line being sung get drawn out way too long makes me minus ½ a star. But this is a fun listen! Definitely better than What's the Story Morning Glory 3.7/4 Best song: Married with Children
Hadn’t listened to this oasis album before, but quite liked it
Sounds great! I love this 90s rock production, and the songs are catchy and have great hooks. Very fun listen!
This album was huge at the time, with their first album Oasis launch not only their commercial success, but also a phenomenon know as Oasismania, showing how much they were huge from the beggening in their home country. This album was a massive critical sucess too, widely consider as one of their best, so no suprise its here, and i have almost never listen to it. I always like the cover, inspired by a Beatles backcover and its just poerfect, the coulour, the way the band are dressed and place it work as a charm. So this album is the started of Oasis, and a major breaktroughb for a british kind of alternative rock know as britpop, and for the rst of thei album Oasis (especially Noel Gallagher) would have a recepe for their songs. This recepe is particulari obvious on this album, a provocative and bad boys attitude offstage, simple but catchy melody and universal chorus. The album mixed a lot of ol' school british rock influences from the classical pop rock like The Beatles (probabbly the most obvious one), but also psychedelic rock (also from the Beatles in 1966-1967), Glam rock (Like T.rex from wich they borrow their most famous riff) and punk rock. Noel said their is only three songs in wich he accually say somethings, Rock N Roll Star, Live Forever ,Cigarettes and Alchool, so a bit of a down side is that the song look a bit alike, lyrically and a bit musicaly, but not in a so shocking way. even tho they might not be so complicated, deep sojng, they are very good, Rock N Roll Star is about espcaping a boring life with rock n roll excess i guess, very good riff and chorus as always, lyricaly it look kinda like Star by David Bowie. Shakermaker is a bit slower but i like the messy guiatar work (pretty common in Oasis songs in this album) Live Forever is a response to american Grunge (Especially Kurt Cobain) who have song about darkness of life or suicide, the song have one of the best solo on the album and the powerfull and hopefull chorus make it a great song, and their first real massive sucess. The music viedo pay tribute to their idol like John Lennon, Marc Bolan, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Sid Vicious ect. Up in the sky is supposed to be a timeless classic rock n roll song, its a good song but maybe not timeless, the angry lyrics contrast well with the more happier sound of the song. Columbia for me show their apreciation of the 60's psychedelic sounds, apparently they have written the song on acid, and i think it was for the best. Supersonic is not very original but still pretty good, a classical Oasis song nothing more or less. Cigarettes And Alchool for me is the best song on the album, because it show us the real side of Oasis sex drugs and rock n roll, with the main riff borrow from T.Rex hit Get it On, but messier and dirtier with the sleazy and rough lyrics proably the most accurate song of their lifestyle and that why i like it so much. The three last song (except Cigarettes and Alchool) are much liek supersonic, really pure Oasis songs, but not that much interesting. Married with children is the only accoutic song on the album and close it all, bring an interesting contrast with the rest of the reccord, i enjoy it. Oasis is of course mainly the two brother, Noel the songwritten and guitarist that come up with magical catchy riff and song and Liam sing it with a particular energy that only him have. Anyway the Gallagher brother really are Oasis heart and soul, even tho all the members did and incredible job.
Incredible debut album. A little more raw and less polished than their later stuff but I remember thinking how revolutionary it sounded at the time. Not sure if I was right or just sheltered, but it still sounds pretty fresh to me today, even if I like "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" a little better.
A classic
A very high 4! This year I’ve been coming to the realization that I really do like Oasis- and it might be because I like all of their musical inspirations, but I can’t deny that every single song on this album hits for me
Good effort
I've gone on record a number of times that I don't find Oasis as good as most people think they are. I DEFINITELY don't think Oasis is as good as Oasis thinks they are. But maybe I've just spent too much time with Morning Glory and not enough with Definitely Maybe, because this was a fairly solid listen. Derivative, maybe, but not offensive. I straight up enjoyed songs like "Columbia". Even the singles here, like "Supersonic" and "Live Forever", are among their better hits. Alright fellas, I'll give you your flowers this time around.
Really wish this was "what's the story" but on its own merits, it's good
Britpop de Oasis. Está bien. Un 4.
Estos no son los de wonderwall? Pos no, rock pre 2000les. Bastante OK algo trippy ta fino, escuchable disfrutable 4,6/5 A pos he buscat en google i si son els de wonderwall, pero al any seguent de este disco.
Solid record.
Wasn't super in love with the first few songs but the rest of it grew on me. 3.5/5.
Quite good but not so stand out.
Solid album 8 /10
Sounds like grunge rock, I like the stretching of syllables and quite a good instrumental still bad genre.
Typischer 90er Brit-Pop. Gut zu hören, bekannte Klänge. 4/5
At the time this album was released, I was much more hyped about Offspring, Bad Religion and Green Day. I still am, and hadn’t given this album any thought in decades. With good reason. It’s not a bad album at all, but it doesn’t live up to its hype. Of the first five tracks, only Live Forever is something to write home about. Then Supersonic turns things around, and starts the strongest 3-song sequence of the album. The last 3 tracks are also quite good, and salvage the four stars. Good debut, but having the strongest songs on the final half is rather strange
Pretty good!
It all just sounds the same, in a perfectly good and reasonable way.
certainly earned its place on the list but i wouldn’t say its even the best oasis album. it has its huge, glaring flaws but it’s undeniably full of bangers.
I said in January that I always preferred (What's the Story?) Morning Glory to Definitely Maybe, and I do, but that doesn't diminish a quality and historic album, and to produce a sound this big and this memorable with your debut effort is pretty staggering. Rock 'n' Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic, Bring It On Down and Cigarettes & Alcohol are all the epitome of Oasis, but Shakermaker, Columbia and Slide Away all have the hallmarks of stuff they had the versatility to pull out and would go on to be just as memorable for. I think a couple of weaker tracks in Up In The Sky, Digsy's Dinner and Married With Children stop it getting a 5, but it's the highest of 4s.
This is just such a good debut. Not (quite) as overplayed as What's The Story Morning Glory, but some really good songs on there, and it's a little rougher around the edges (in a good way, definitely compared to where they went later on). And it's only 1994 at this point, you're coming out of grungeland, you've had a bit of the Happy Mondays, and this is just on a whole different planet. Definitely some weak points, but it's still a very high 4.
Favorite Tracks: Supersonic, Live Forever Glad I gave this one a chance. It sounds almost like a soundtrack album.
A fine example for Brit Pop. I like it, but What's the story morning glory was better
Perhaps not the best Oasis album, but to me it is a very worthy debut. It isn’t too often we see a debut album sound as complete as this one. On a side note, Was this the birth of what we now know as Indie rock? Kind of gives me cage the elephant vibes. Yeah yeah. I know there’s a lot of Brit Pop and this may not be stray TOO far off the Brit Pop of its time; but idk- this shit slaps. And that’s coming from someone who’s not super into the genre. Its still crazy to me that this was a 90’s album, I honestly had to check twice because I didn’t believe their debut was ‘94. Slide away is my top track
Like it! ‘‘Twas fun. Still think what’s the story/morning glory is a better album. Favourite song was married with children
I could maybe be 5/5 if I didn't know that Oasis got better later
great
ok
Gran irrupción en escena . Vuelven The Beatles??. Estupendas canciones y un sonido particular.
Buenas canciones
Really solid album. Supersonic and slide away are great tracks.
A sick debut album, not as good as the follow up in my opinion but a classic none the less. Live forever is an all time great. Fav songs: - Live Forever - Supersonic - Bring It On Down - Cigarettes and Alcohol - Digsys Diner
Love it
Not going to turn me in to an Oasis fan but better than the other album
4.4 Maybe my favourite Oasis? Maybe. Fave songs: Married with Children, Listen up, Live forever, Slide away
I've always been a bit of an Oasis hater, but admittedly, this album blew me away. Just simple but awesome rock and roll. Very fun, very 90s sounding. I understand why it was so popular when it came out.
🤷 Men tæske nem lytte oplevelse.
More filler than i recalled. Rock and roll star sucks. Two showpieces live forever and supersonic ironically derive a lot of atmosphere from simple opening beats from a drummer i believe they fired for incompetence. Supersonic constantly hooks, bitch ast Nordic ‘hitmakers’ of today could learn. Hard to tell what is glorious ignorance and what is being British but lyrics are the best kind of ridiculous. As is pronunciations on cigarettes and alcohol
I was getting rather fed up with all the hype around Oasis by all the media juggernauts of the time. I remember the first grand hyped up play of 'Supersonic' on Radio 1 and felt underwhelmed at the time.i couldn't help thinking j&MC with punk attitude, Is this really McGee's new great white hope for the wonderful iconic Creation Records? (Lets not go there, I'll save some vitriol for their follow up effort, which is bound to appear sometime I'm sure). This album is by far the best thing they made for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was made before the media expectations grew more than they already had at the time, and secondly, because of the hedonistic direction they decided to take their music with their ghastly follow-up. Some really good songs on here starting with 'Columbia' their best song of their career by far. Also ‘Supersonic’ was their best single. The first minute of ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ is also truly great, but only ruined when Liam opens his mouth. And there lies the problem with Oasis, Liam Gallagher. I admire him and detest him in equal measure. His nasally vocals, at the time of release I did not like at all, but has grown on me since. This album is very good, although I have to ignore the ridiculous nursery rhyme lyrics of 'Shakermaker', genius or plain lazy? But on the whole a solid debut. A mid 4.
I've always loved this album
Typical Oasis; uk rock sound with a twinge of pop/rock? I liked it
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Good high quality rock and roll, uh, music.
Excellent. 4
What better way to celebrate the Oasis tour than to re-listen to an album. Some bands should live forever.
Having avoided listening to their songs for quite a while (Manc swagger not being my thing) I actually really enjoyed rediscovering what a good album this is and particularly for a debut. Seven out of ten but I'll be generous as I do love a touch of psychedelia and a great outro. I'm still Team Blur in the scheme of things, though.
This is one of those albums that if you was there at the time of release it means far more than if you are listening to it for the first time now I'm old enough to have been there and the nostalgia and memories that listening to this for the first time in years invokes means this is a great album. I completely understand why it would not have that effect on other people Albums from the 60s and 70s can have the same reaction from me. While not being perfect this album hits all the right notes for me and is a pleasant reminder of the power of music on the mind
I have to split the fifth star evenly between the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, in that order, without whom none of this is possible. It's good company, and the reverence is articulate and brilliantly executed.
Excellent rock and roll from around the last time rock and any cultural hold. Not quite perfect enough to get a 5, but a very easy 4.
I really hate that there are not any 0.5 stars on this site, but right now, its fine because this is a 4/5, their best material. Hit after Hit. They are awful human beings, but a great album
Say what you want about the Gallaghers, those early Oasis albums are infectious.
“Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” might be the ballsiest opening track of the last 30 years. It certainly turned out to be prophetic. The swagger, the playfulnesses, the cocksure embrace of stardom well before it’s warranted, all cool conspire to create one of the truly memorable debut records in recent memory. Plus, the brothers Gallagher enter our orbit to put another spin on the ageless archetype of the Rock duo who constantly repel and attract one another. No matter what awful things they would say in future press releases about each other, surely they know they’ve created the best work possible together and the sooner they give the people what they want in some kind of reunion, only then will their superstar legacy will be etched in stone. One criticism too often thrown their way is to dismiss them as too-eager Beatles revivalists, especially songwriting mastermind Noel Gallagher. It’s not that they aren’t revivalists, it’s more that they wear their uniforms so comfortably and their influences so happily on their sleeves. And since they pull it off with confidence and catchy tunes, like the instant classic “Live Forever,” then no wonder people hate on Oasis for that. Nothing worse than a talented braggart who actually pulls shit off—it’s incredibly annoying and pretty amazing to watch happen in real time. Their next record would be their Apollo 11 mission, one that would produce a god-tier modern acoustic classic. But “Definitely Maybe” turned out to be way more definitive than the album title suggests. You did it, boys. You pulled off the heist but quickly made your business legit. And technically, you lasted longer than your idols, The Beatles, so take comfort in that and in the music, even when you can’t take comfort in each other.
Very nice Britpop. There are other albums from Oasis I like more.
very cool shoegaze esk alternative rock vibes, super cool melodies too!
'Slide Away' might be their best song, I could listen to that wall of guitars on repeat forever. That shoegaze-y wall makes the whole thing sound great even if the songs are somewhat basic, but I guess that was their whole appeal, simple stuff but it's damn catchy. Shoutout to the chorus of 'Supersonic' too, the guitar bends in that make me bite my lip a little.
just a beaut
4-
Nice old times & soft music
The fact that none of Oasis’s popular song on this album made this much more enjoyable! I loved the more classic rock sound. The song felt more real. I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it
Supersonic was the only standout song. Otherwise most of the songs were good but nothing over the top impressive. 7/10
Good collection of songs, but they all feel samey. I would say Oasis gets repetitive with their releases at times.
great album. Some songs are clearly above the others but upon listen, I find new songs that I enjoy.
Excellent album. From the first song to the last. I had forgot how much I enjoy this type of music.
First full album listen of Oasis, on their debut album. Excellent Britpop sound that just checks all my boxes (though I'll have to concede sometimes Liam's voice comes off nasal and sometimes grating). I love Noel's guitar work. All very good songs, but Up in the Sky, Supersonic, and Cigarettes and Alcohol are my favorites.
not something i loved but there were a few ok songs. i downloaded 5,6,9,10 and 11 (: not bad music at all just not my jam
Good one
What you get when you mix, Brit pop, Americana, good vibes and ultra singable choruses is “Definitely Maybe”, one of the greatest road trip albums of all time. Honestly, this is such a great debut album. It made me realize how essential Oasis is when looking at music of the 90s. It’s pretty apparent where they drew their inspiration from in their sound, but in the years after their high point, you could start hearing the influence they brought to the scene from The Killers to now Greta Van Fleet. From start to finish, this album is just very good. I wouldn’t be unhappy listening to any of these songs again. The instrumentals certainly aren’t reinventing the wheel, but they don’t need to. It’s catchy and undemanding to listen to. The only qualm I can find is that Liam Gallagher’s voice could get old after a while, but it doesn’t get obnoxious for me here. 8.5/10 Best Track: Supersonic
Grew up listening to What's the Story (Morning Glory) on cassette and I liked how this album had less of a poppy acoustic feel and more rock like the Kinks ig? So British. I love it lol
A local classic, Digsy's dinner is a bit shit
Rock n Roll Star!
fave track: up in the sky final thoughts: they ate like let's be real crazy that this is a DEBUT
9/10 (im getting annoyed that half stars aren’t a thing on here, get me back in musicboard) definitely my one of my favourite listens since the start of this challenge, i enjoyed the majority of songs on here! there was a very abrasive style of shoegaze used on here, and it definitely aligns with the lyricism especially on tracks like “rock n roll star” - such an amazing opener by the way, it’s been stuck in my head for the past few hours - and “live forever”. i also love the whiny vocal performance on here, adds so much personality! it’s a near flawless debut, my only complaint is that two songs didn’t click with me, but that’s honestly due to personal preference. also i didn’t like how the vocals were drowned out at times by the instrumental, will never like that stylistic choice. however i will be exploring oasis after this haha
Currently listening, but so far so good!
One of the better albums before. Did not know Oasis had actually good songs. Only the voice is sometimes too "noel" lig. Wieso schreibe ich eigentlich auf english?
Nice.
Always discounted them because of the news/drama story. But that was wrong of me. That was a very solid album. I will continue to listen to this.
Bright, bouncing British pop rock done surprisingly well. I was not a fan of Oasis outside of a couple of their hits and expected a sloggish listen, but caught myself really zoning to a lot of the tunes, which are well produced and straightforward in their construction and execution. I will listen again for sure.
Rock n' Roll Star - 7.4 - energetic, pumped-up rock - a bit repetitive Shakermaker - 8.2 - great vocals and guitar Live Forever - 8.6 - awesome solo, great lyrics; want a bit more variety Up In The Sky - 5.9 - repetitive guitar with boring lyrics; vocals are amazing Columbia - 9.5 - incredible Supersonic - 8.9 - love the guitar and chorus especially. not a big clap guy Bring It On Down - 8.1 - great guitar and lyrics, chorus is meh Cigarettes & Alcohol - 7.6 - vocals are weird, but guitar sounds great Digsy's Diner - 5.3 - too upbeat, too british, and too much lasagna Slide Away - 8.3 - great guitar and verses, corny chorus Married With Children - 9.0 - love the acoustics and vocals
Rock 'N' Roll Star Live Forever Supersonic Cigarettes & Alcohol Slide Away
Meh
I love this record. Definitely there is a heavy amount of nostalgia in there for me but I think it is also objectively a great record and also an interesting time capsule. Cigarettes And Alcohol is probably my favourite track on here but every track is good.
Refused to listen. Yes, it *was* a 4 star album. But those days are long, long behind me now. Move on.
Brilliant
Better than I was expecting
4/5 I enjoyed the sound but it was kind of too long and repetitive.
Probably a 3 star effort in reality. Some dreadful lyrics. Gets a 4 for sentimental reasons, with its energy and impact at the time. The lyrics are mostly terrible though!
Pretty good
Test
3.6/5 Best track: Married With Children
4/5
It's really odd, but I've just realized I've only listened to 1 Oasis album. I'm not sure why that is, because I really liked the one I listened to (the one with all the hits) This slaps. I was about 3 months old when this came out, but I think I would have been better off if I'd started with this album rather than Morning Glory.
can’t crank it as loud as i’d like cause the mix is harsh. it’s also somehow muddy at the same time. truly awful. catchy as fucking songs but they do tend to overstay their welcome. the songs are very simple but simple songs get boring after three minutes. usually i absolutely fucking hate most british people but these lads are absolute 90’s icons. one of the few britpop artists i actually won’t shit on. this album isn’t perfect but it fucking rules.
listened to original (44m) and then deluxe (3h 24m). 3.7/5
Are these guys insane for thinking they're better than the Beatles? Absolutely. But this is a solid album, and about as good as Britpop gets, I'd wager.
Oasis is great 90s Brit pop. I know it's popular to hate them, but they're just too good. 4 stars.
Solid all the way through - some of it starts to sound the same but it’s a really good sound so that’s fine. Great guitars and riffs throughout
A defining album. Pity they split up.
This was a great rock album. Lots of fun to listen to even if the vocals are kind of annoying.
4.0
Great feeling - put me back in time - yet timeless!
Sehr kantig und voller Energie - klingt bereits ikonisch
Great guitar sounds. The outro to Supersonic is outrageously delicious. Alot of these songs beg to be heard live. Lots of overdrive and reverb.
i love that i got to listen to two british bands in a row, it made me nostalgic, it made me happy and i think oasis have a right to be seen as iconic, love most of the album and i’m glad i listened to it.
Such a good debut album, really enjoyed this one.
Known Before: band, album Standouts: Live Forever, Supersonic, Married With Children 7.5
Awesome album so far. Classic rock vibes but also modern. 4/5
Oasis is pretty cool. Calming but still enjoyable music. Another album that comes together very well but at the expense of a lot of the songs being very similar.
I love the lead singers voice and the way he extends some of his words. I really like this album I just wish more of the songs sounded a little different. Fo
Solid 4 star album. Top 3 songs: Married with children, Digsy’s diner, Columbia
🎸
I was a bit surprised how much I enjoyed this. I remember the Oasis hype around the time this came out and it really was something to behold. Yes, it's derivative, but many good things are. I can hear sounds of the Stone Roses, the Beatles, even the Rolling Stones here and there. I prefer this album to the next one, it's rawer, the songs haven't been as over-played, and there's not a single clanger. I can put aside the pretty awful personalities involved and take this at face value, in which case it's a 4-star album for me, not quite perfection, but about as close to it as any brit-pop album I've ever heard.
Definitely Maybe my favourite Oasis record and definitely no-maybes-about-it one of England’s most enduring exports.
Feels like I'm in the 90's. Good music for road trips. The overall rating of the album is 8/10.
The Oasis boys hit hard on their first album and it's a good listen if you like guitar rock. It has aged well since it was released in the early 90's. Not a timeless album but a strong one.
First Oasis album for me. It was a much harder rock album than I was expecting (other than the last track). I liked it a lot. Take one star off for the wahhhhhh vocals. Favorite track: Rock and Roll Star
Fun
pretty great. rocked more than i thought it would. may need another listen to be sure i liked it that much.
Definitely not Oasis, but was surprised to see this was their debut album. I definitely thought it was later work.
Great sounds, love Liam's voice, but it has that familiar Oasis sameness.
If a few of these song didnt get OVERPLAYED so much this could retain a 5 star - couple off assholes, but they make good rock music
Test
Since I only really know oasis through what's the story morning glory, I really appreciated getting another album of theirs. This is definitely safer and more straightforward than morning glory since it's pretty much rock all the way through without any champagne supernova type songs. Fortunately, it never got boring for me and each song was super fun even if there wasn't a ton of variety. Liam's voice sounds like he's at a live show and is belting everything out despite being in a recording booth and the overall vibes are reminiscent of the beatles (except for the goofy writing). I especially liked supersonic and married with children and every song would go crazy at a party. Also, I always find it fascinating that this is what became huge after Nirvana broke up because it both makes sense to me since it's like second wave Beatles-ish britpop but is so different from grunge that it's a little surprising.
that was fun!
"I owe you an apology. I wasn't really familiar with your game." Wonderwall is the only Oasis tune I could name coming into this album but I enjoyed this cover to cover. Perhaps the first album so far that didn't have any songs that I wanted to skip. I'm not sure if there are any true "bangers" for me on this one which will keep this out of 5 star territory for me, but perhaps that changes for me on subsequent relistens. Song going on my "1001 Songs" Playlist: Married with Children Songs Going On My "1001 Albums Savelist" Playlist: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Shakermaker, Live Forever, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Slide Away, Married with Children
Will listen to the hits again.
Great album ! 4 stars.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Rock’n’ roll star, Live forever
You have to grudgingly hand it to them, this is an education from the University of Banger. Shame one of them is a Tory and they're both City fans.
listened to again pretty good debut album
Enjoyable. Well made. Not really my genre of choice, but it sounds good and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy listening to it.
Na
That's a nice surprise.
Absolute banger
I definitely don’t remember this album being this good, but I love it. I’ve had it on repeat all day. Not a weak track on it. I was kind of surprised to see this album on this list, but I get it now.
Wicked album. Not as hit heavy as .. Morning Glory, but a brilliant listen anyway.
