What I don’t understand about Oasis is how the derivative riffs, whining pointless lyrics and monstrous self-importance could have fooled anyone into thinking they were anything other than average at best. Yes, they wrote a few good 90s songs, but so did 3 Doors Down or The Cranberries, and nobody’s anointing them as the second coming. This album is boring, repetitive and forgettable.
Time has softened my view of bands I've disliked in the past. I've even turned the corner on some and have come to enjoy their music. Oasis is not one of those bands, in fact I dislike them even more today. This album is worse than the other Oasis album. Lame generic brit pop rock.

5/10 This was always going to be a tough one for me. Oasis have never been my thing, but as with any album, I always do my best to go in with an open mind. There are some decent enough songs on here, actually. Nothing particularly spectacular, but passable pop-rock songs that would sit well in the songbook of many half-decent mainstream rock band of the time. Unfortunately, they’re often compromised by Liam Gallagher’s voice, which nasally drawls and drones over the top of it all, prioritising attitude over musical skill. That obviously works for some, but for me, it’s always come across as pretty unlikeable and this full listen of the album hasn’t done a lot to change my mind. Weirdly, his vocal style is actually fairly inconsistent, and in places isn’t actually too bad, but that doesn’t particularly help with the flow and consistency of the album to my ears. The songs themselves are often pretty simple compositions, but are, in most instances fairly well put together, performed and produced. You can definitely hear that this is a debut album, as there are weak areas where things go a little underdeveloped, and there are times when basic ideas are dragged on for too long, but for the most part, things aren’t bad. I think the thing that really gets me about this record, and Oasis in general, is that it actually, vocals excepted, sounds pretty generic and doesn’t stand out from among the crowd. I kind of feel, as mentioned in my song by song, that if you removed Liam and replaced him with another singer, most of these tracks could have been by one of any number of britpop bands that were around at the time. I’ve heard a theory that Oasis became as big as they did because the Stone Roses, in their failure to follow up their debut album in a timely manner, left a massive vacuum for a northern, attitude edged rock band to fill and that Oasis were the first to fit the bill, which kind of makes sense. As for this album, I think it more or less met my expectations. It wasn’t terrible, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is still pretty middle of the road and in no way worthy of being as highly rated as it is. Awful? No. Over-rated? Massively. For me? Again, no. Rock 'N' Roll Star - This is a decent enough rock and roll based number. Liam’s voice is quite irritating, the way he slurs and drawls over everything, but underneath that, it’s not bad. It’s a fairly by the numbers rock song that doesn’t do anything vastly interesting or innovative, but does what it does fairly well. Unfortunately, it’s also a half-decent three minute rocker that drags on for five and a half minutes. It feels like they’re trying to be ‘experimental at the end, but it’s pretty unconvincing. Shakermaker - An uncredited take-off of a Coca-Cola advertising jingle? Ok then. It’s slow, plodding, unoriginal and boring. And then we have to listen to Liam's awful slurring vocals droning on (and on and on) over the top. The pace is all wrong, the composition is basic and boring and it drags on for over five minutes! What a load of old rubbish. Live Forever - Ah, one of the big singles. It’s got one of the most unconvincing transitions to falsetto that I can recall. It’s pretty basic, particularly the guitar solo, but it’s not a bad little song really. Liam continues to be the worst thing about the band, but other than that, this is a decent entry into the brit-pop/indie songbook of the 90s. It’s instrumentally well performed, has some decent melodic hooks and captures the sound of 90s British rock well. That said, listening to this, I don’t really get why this has is any better than other contemporary bands. Up In The Sky - This isn’t that bad, it’s got a fairly repetitive riff that drags on a bit too much, but it’s got decent pace. When Liam isn’t unnecessarily dragging out his vowels, he's far less annoying, and he perhaps does it less here. I can’t believe they dragged this riff out for as long as they have though. Columbia - This is another by the numbers indie rock number. As with the rest of the album thus far, it’s largely competently performed and produced, but it doesn’t really offer anything that elevates it above being a decent album track from one of any number of bands of the time. Swap out the singer and tell me this is a Space, Dodgy or Supergrass track and I’d fully believe you. It’s not particularly exciting, but it’s decent enough. Supersonic - I’m not one to hook on to lyrics particularly often, only ever really latching onto lyrical content with songs that I've listened to a lot of times. But the lyrics here stuck out as being particularly poor. Lazy rhyming that sounds like the last minute poetry homework of an unengaged teenager. It’s a slow, fairly ponderous song with some decent elements of sound design in there, but it’s pretty slow to do anything. There’s at least a bit of range between sections, but it does become pretty repetitive. Bring It On Down - This has a nice rolling start that leads into something with really good pace and drive. The drawling singing drags away some of the momentum though. With a sharp, staccato vocal, this could have worked a lot better. Some nice guitar playing in here and the drumming is solid too. Unfortunately, it never really develops particularly far and it’s all pretty dynamically flat, but it’s still pretty decent. Cigarettes & Alcohol - Ah, Bang a Gong by T-Rex, but if you strip it of all its charm away and get an annoying prick to whinge over the top of it. It’s very splashy and cluttered in the highs in the mix which makes it a little tough on the ears. And good god, Liam’s vocal delivery is just atrocious. It eschews timing and tightness for ‘attitude’, but that attitude is of someone threateningly asking you for a quid so they can get the bus. Digsy's Dinner - This is better. It’s got a bit of rhythmic range and dynamism to it and Liam is reigning in his more irritating tendencies. Not convinced by that piano solo though. Sheesh. It all becomes a bit of a wash after a while though and then it’s done. Again, sounds like a decent but not standout track from any number of bands of the time. Slide Away - This is another by the numbers pop-rock composition. It’s pretty one-paced, but it’s not too bad. It’s got a decent amount of musical swagger to it and there are some decent bits of instrumental work in there. And then it drags on for 6 minutes, which is just way too long. Especially the two separate bits where he relentlessly sings “slide away”. Married With Children - This sounds a lot like Blur. It’s pretty good actually. Liam’s voice is a little on the nasal side, but it’s got less of the annoying drawling. It’s nice and stripped back and doesn’t overdo things and while it’s a pretty simple composition, what it does, it does right and then doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Did not do enough for me. Songs were a bit samey. Wouldn't revisit this over other albums in the genre.

This came up after the other oasis album. It's almost as good and precedes the other oasis album. I'd say you should listen to it but I reckon on its own it's a 3.

First time I’ve ever listened to an oasis album. Obviously familiar with their mega hits, but this was not what I got from this album. I can hear where greatness comes later, but honestly this album was pretty meh. The vocal melodies were boring and followed the chords a lot and the songs were forgettable. It was a good vibe and I like the production, layered guitars and the “live” feel about it. I’ll bet it was awesome in pubs in the UK at the time. Hoping the next album is more impressive.
Its okay, not offensive andor anything particulary wrong with it, it just didnt stick for me. If someone said they really loved this album i could understand. Just not for me.
Can't say I particularly enjoyed it. I found the vocals quite whiny, which is a staple of 90s british rock. Some of the guitar work was pretty good, but most of it did feel quite the same, except for cigarettes and alcohol none of the songs really stood out to me. 6.5/10
I was honestly expecting to dislike this but it was pretty engaging, though a bit long and the tracks blended together a bit. All around not bad at all. 3/5

The "lesser" of the Oasis albums really felt that way. A couple of bangers, but overall it lacked the pizzazz of What's the Story...

The intros to almost every song in the first half sound like things that came before, but that familiarity probably isn't viewed as a bad thing. On the other hand, it's definitely RAWK MUSIC, but different than what came before it. Ah, dichotomies. Fun listen mostly.
Feel like the radio hits (Live Forever, Supersonic) didn't hit as hard as the ones that were a little fresher. Not sure I was psyched on anything as much as Rock 'n Roll Star for the rest of the album, which is always a disappointing feeling, kind of expected just one more song to really blow me away somewhere deeper down the tracklist.
Outside of a few tracks I've never heard any of this album. And yet, I've heard this all before. I'm not hearing the "new sound" that initial reviews are so excited for. And whatever the "grunge had died with Kurt Cobain" from JK in 1001 sentiment is crazy. Maybe he was right that the musical landscape in the UK was "barren." I know Oasis despite (or because of) the turbulent relationship of the Gallagher brothers can crank out some hits. I'm just not hearing it yet. Live Forever Married With Children
Music's shite, keeps me up al night
I definitely maybe remember when this came out and they were making noise within the music lovers community. I didn't get into the disc or the band at the time, so this is my first time listening to the entire album. I vividly remember "Live Forever" getting a lot of airplay, it's a good track but nothing that deserved the hype it got at the time. "Supersonic" is the second most popular track, I have never heard that on American radio, same goes for "Cigarettes & Alcohol", another 100M track. Solid listening counts for all 11 songs, the weakest has over 25M and the most popular hs over 400M. Almost all of their songs could be 1 minute shorter and remove a chorus or two (see "Slide Away"!). In hindsight I understand why I didn't get into them. It seems self indulgent at times, boring at others, wall of sound with no breaks, repetitive with forced hooks, too Brit pop for me. "Shakermaker", "Digsy's Baby", "Up In The Sky" and "Columbia" are weak songs. The average outweighs the good on this one. One dimensional band. You had to grow up in England to really dig this one. It hard to give this more than 2.5 stars, but I'll round up since apparently it strikes a chord with the Brits for whatever reason. Not quite shite they might say.
A little disappointing. Considering Oasis' cultural impact, I would have expected something that leaves a stronger impression upon me. There's nothing wrong with it.

I really enjoyed this album, not my usual style of music but they hit it good. My only gripe with this album that really annoyed me is his voice gets pretty whiny sometimes which I despise, and specifically the one song "Slide Away" where he sings the words "Slide Away" like 20 times for about a minute and a half. Awful choice on that part. Solid 3/5 for me because of that.
This album was one of my first interesting album journeys. “Married with children” already was one of my very very favorite songs, so I was already keen to hear the full list. At the beginning it was hard for me to keep up, it was nothing particularly interesting. But I was hooked on from Columbia. Bring It On Down was a total mind blown! I loved the guitar solo sooo much. I also very much liked Digsy’s Dinner. And the finishing with “Married with children” is a chef’s kiss. I love that beautiful song so much.
Oasis sounds BIG. Big hooks, big production; I can totally understand why people thought they would be the next Beatles. Unfortunately, I greatly dislike the Beatles. The lyrics can come off pretty trite, but the power of Liam Gallagher's delivery can make you forget that at times. The music itself can sound a little manufactured, too, but the combination of everything comes together in an unexpectedly charming package. Still, the trick kind of relies on the listener's lack of deep listening. This is the sound of a band succeeding despite themselves. They do have a good sound, the 90's production really does things for me, and overall, I found myself enjoying Definitely Maybe. I'm not a new Oasis fan or anything, and I probably won't put this on again anytime soon, but in the span of the record, they kinda won me over. Highlights: "Up in the Sky", "Columbia"

Okay, I listened to part of it and thought it was pretty good. But, I didn’t finish because I have been getting so many rock albums that i’m not feeling a ton haha.
Not my normal music but had some good songs. the songs also had good "music" behind it. the beats were fun on some of the songs as well.

I think the title here is correct. Definitely maybe. Artful noise, much better than the singles I've heard from this band, not sure I would revisit, though.
I know this is supposed to be one of their best but it only has a few songs that are actually worth it. It's not a bad listen overall.

My first time listening to Oasis. I've seen Oasis vs Radiohead convos online and now I can say Radiohead clears. The singer sounds like his he sings with his mouth wide open. Solid album. (Your music's shite/it keeps me up all night)
Oasis is one of those bands that most people either love or hate. I just don't think about them that hard. I've heard them plenty - we had a few fans at the record store back when this came out. They've never clicked with me, but I've never really disliked their stuff either. It's an album done by a talented bunch, but it's nothing more than that to my ears.

A few really good songs then one song repeated throughout essentially.
I loved this back in the day but I was largely put off as their fame and egos grew. If I take the album in isolation, there’s still a lot to like, maybe that is in part due to my familiarity, but I found myself enjoying this more than my grumpy self would like to admit. Perhaps what is remarkable, is that the album tracks perhaps aren’t quite as good as I remembered, whilst the well known singles carry this, with the exception of Columbia, which I enjoyed the most today. Many tracks have been overplayed and that does colour my enjoyment, even if in parts they exceed my expectations. My initial reaction when I pressed play was feeling underwhelmed, I expected it to sound bigger and fuller than it did, although that feeling somewhat dissipated as I worked my way through. What I dislike about this album is just how derivative it is, and I know it wears that as a badge of honour, but if I want to listen to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or T-Rex, then I will. The Gallagher brothers will always sour it for me, if I think hard enough about them I can see my rating dropping in front of my eyes. It’s far from perfect but it hugely defined a large section of British culture in the 90s and beyond, it probably deserves 4 stars but Noel shouldn’t be an insufferable prick.
Within 5 days, 3 Britpop bands - wow. OK, now having listened to The Boo Radleys three days ago and Blur's self-titled album 5 days ago, I can't say I'm equally impressed with this Oasis album. Never was a big fan of them either - too much of that laddish-cheerful-drunk-sing-along quality in their songs for my liking - and this (debut) album of theirs doesn't change my opinion much. Yeah, there are some good songs on it, and I liked the raw energy that their later albums would lack, but it's still a bit mediocre compared to the aforementioned bands. 3/5

3 stars I always play this album expecting it to be the time I see what the fuss is all about. This album is beloved by some, voted as the best album of all time but some people in NME I think? But that’s laughable! Not because it’s bad, but because it clearly isn’t better than so many albums! There are some good, even great songs on this album. But there is so much generic boring stuff too and I never feel like getting through the whole thing. Their follow up was much better in my opinion, and then like most Americans I know nothing of their work post-1997. But this album is definitely maybe just fine.

Man, I'm gonna get hate for not liking these boys. I think their pretty mediocre. Don't even know why they are the most famous Brit Rock outlet. Sure I enjoy some songs. She's Electric and Some Might Say are even personal favorites, but as a whole, I don't find Oasis that interesting. Their debut didn't convince me otherwise. Has some nice songs, has some filler. Has some inventive moments, has some boring ones too.
3 out of 5. After finally listening past their singles I think I see why Oasis gets as much love as they do.

Funny how debut albums have lots for energy and this is no exception by Oasis. Definitely one of their best, well maybe.

Unremarkable brit pop
This is the debut album from these British guys. Almost all the tracks are hard rock in my opinion. It’s fine for a debut album, although nothing here is memorable. I recall the band members getting into a lot of fights back then, but I suppose that’s not uncommon for rock bands.
Despite the charming double epistemic adverb title, I'm not that excited about another Oasis album. I feel I've already heard Oasis and therefore this album, being very similar (yet somehow louder and worse) to the last one, isn't anything I need to hear. Then again, if I were making this list, it'd be like: 10 Magnetic Fields albums, 5 Tool, 5 Placebo*, 25 musical cast recordings, 5 beethovens, and then a frantic panic to think up 950 other albums. So I guess I shouldn't be too judgmental until I make my own list of 1001 albums I like better (which will happen on its own if both I and the user album list persist long enough, anyway). Long story short I definitely maybe am not excited by this. 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' just made me want to hear 'Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk' by Rufus instead. I considered giving this a 2 because it made my ears ring, but the title saved it. *Placebo have a song called 'Plasticine', and 'Shakermaker' from this album mentions plasticine, so I finally looked it up. It's a British brand of kids' modelling clay. Never would have guessed that in a million years. Sounds like an adjective!! Anthrocene... plasticine... langoustine...

this is pretty inoffensive but I just did not find the highs to be there in the way that they are on what’s the story morning glory.
I guess you had to be there with Oasis. They're a pleasant enough band and I tap my toe to enough of these songs that it makes for a decent listening experience but none of these songs strike me as particularly memorable 30 years on.

This was good - it actually took me a few songs to get into it. Some of the songs were a bit overlong for what they were but mostly very good and enjoyable. I don’t know how much I would return to this but I still enjoyed it.

I had to look up "shambolic" to be sure it meant what I thought it did and yes, it describes Oasis perfectly. This album is messy and chaotic, but it has a few good songs (I would appreciate a Gallagher-free cover of Live Forever)-- the rocking songs really rock and the ballads are unlistenable. I guess it demonstrates promise, I'm not sure of what.
Starts strong, ends a bit boring. Since they've reunited Oasis have been treated like the second coming of Jesus himself, but that doesn't obscure that their music was oftentimes mediocre. Perhaps it's more that they're a snapshot of a place and time (Britpop and Britain in the 90s) that a lot of people miss and would like to go back to. Nostalgia is an ugly business with a very rosy lens. Still, pretty enjoyable first half.

Oasis songs don’t necessarily all sound the same, but they approach each track with the same energy and attitude. So much so that you could certainly be forgiven for thinking you’ve heard some of these tunes before on their bigger hits. It’s a winning formula, sure, but that’s exactly what these songs are: formulaic. In any case, I do appreciate that Oasis ‘sound’ and the confident execution on this album. ✨

I honestly have no idea what to say about this album. I guess it's.. Fine? While listening I discovered that I had heard many songs before but I would never be able to think of any from the top of my head. This examplifies my feelings about this album quite well probably. Recognisable but not memorable. I'd definitely like this album more if I heard it during my formative years but it doesn't hit that hard for me now
Pretty nice listen, although Oasis also just sounds a bit cheesy somehow it is still entertaining. Really big 90s vibe, feels pretty nostalgic. Favourite song: SuperSonic, least favourite: Rock & Roll Star (not a great start in my opinion). 3.5 stars.

Solid listen. I feel like I'm writing this a lot, but 3/5 in my scale basically means "happy to listen to the album, but wouldn't explicitly seek it out to play" and that covers a lot of the spectrum.
This album did not really push the envelope or innovate in any way, particularly when compared to other albums coming out around this time period. But I found my self tapping my foot along to the beat throughout the listen. Pretty generic and derivative rock, but very listenable and palatable. There are certainly worse albums out there.
As an Oasis skeptic, this surprised me. Not enough to rave about it but it was a pleasant enough listen.

So I generally quite like Oasis, I just think this didn't quite get past the level of "pretty good rock album" for me. If I could give it a 3.5 I would, don't think it's quite a 4 though. IMO the only truly great song from their catalog that shows up here is Live Forever (honorable mention for Slide Away and Supersonic). The opener is pretty rip-roaring as well, but the album overall just doesn't hit anywhere close to Morning Glory as a whole for me. Nothing wrong with it at all and probably a generally decent debut all things considered but just placing this one in context for me, it's much less of a standout.
It's a review from a fan of electronic music. Paused listening to the album on Bring it Down because I was quite overwhelmed with the energy. But decided to finish the album. It's a nice album! The music feels genuine, and I liked the melodies. Some backing vocals impressed me! But I'm not sure that I would listen to the album one more time. Now I can clearly see that Oasis influenced Kasabian, which is the rock band I like (and they are more electronic too). It's a solid 3 for me only because I won't listen to it one more time.
Het is oasis. Muziek die de juiste nostalgische snaar raakt, die klinkt zoals je weet dat ze zal klinken. Dit album is dan ook nog minder grijsgedraaid dan what’s the story morning glory. Maar anderzijds is het ook maar gewoon Britse garage rock. Niet echt de grote schok in de muziekgeschiedenis. Meer een must voor de toenmalige hype dan voor het verbluffende album.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Oasis (or the subculture that surrounds them as an entity) by any means, and Liam Gallagher's whining does cut through me somewhat, however I can recognise that this has got some cracking tunes on it. It's the only album of theirs I've ever got on with, as it feels that bit more scrappy (in relative terms) with a stronger emphasis towards shoegaze and that swirling style of riffage, which became lost to some degree on the follow up. It's not something I'd ever actively seek out, but over a few beverages in a beer garden in the summer, you could do a lot worse.
Fine record here. I’ve never really understood the appeal of Oasis, they’re a fairly boring and by the numbers band with only about 3 songs I actually care about. “Live Forever” is excellent but every other track here is fairly normal alt rock/britpop of the 90s. Also the production on Oasis records pisses me off because they’re mixed to be so loud that the music is lost in the noise and that’s not pleasant especially if you weren’t huge into the music to begin with. Plus Noel Gallagher is a dick, they both are but Noel having the audacity to act as if he’s better than Lennon is insane, his music isn’t even on the same continent as Lennon’s let alone better
For the record, I spotted the "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke" melody on "Shakermaker" before I read that Oasis had to pay Coca-Cola for using it. You will simply have to take my word on this. Then I listened to more of Definitely Maybe and I thought, 'Is that T. Rex or The Clash or [other artist]?' Noel Gallagher must be a fleshy musical computer with a knack for anthemic hooks. The fact that he interpolated from some of my favorite artists--besides Coke--makes the music on Definitely Maybe quite listenable. However, I am in the 'his brother is a nasally, whiny wanker' camp so the vocals wear on me. I give it one and a half yin and one and a half yang.

If you were a teenager when this came out, it's the best thing you've ever heard. I was more of the Arctic Monkeys generation, but still think Brit indie is all a bit shit.
It’s not horrible, but I didn’t get the hype when I was 14. I still don’t get the hype when I’m 45. A few songs have good, sing-song friendly choruses, but a lot of bands have achieved that. A typical 3/5 rating for me.
Very overplayed but not unenoyable
Generally fairly unbothered about Oasis but I was quite up for it when Rock n Roll Star kicked in. My excitement did tail off halfway through an album of very similar sounding tracks, though there are a few classics. Weirdly ploddier tempos than I remember.

Nothing great, but nothing bad here. It kind of blended together honestly. I have never been the biggest Oasis fan, so I'm not surprised I'm indifferent to this album. I'd recommend to any rock lover though.

This is a pretty good first LP. I particularly liked Rock n Roll Star n Supersonic. Too many songs sounding similar or they would earn another star.
Meh. I find Liam and Noel Oasis kind of insufferable, and that really affects how I perceive this album. I like the sound they're going for, and I like some of the songs on this album (Live Forever!!), but I'm just never gonna listen to this again.

Enjoyed this. Didn't realize the one with champagne supernova was their sophomore effort, this is a really solid first album.

This is most definitely a rock album. I like rock albums. I'll probably give every Led Zeppelin album I encounter on this journey five stars. This rock album just doesn't seem particularly notable. I'm glad I was in Canada bingeing Collective Soul while Blur and Oasis were fighting for the top of the UK charts in the mid 90s.

Different view of Oasis now I read the lyrics. They played Wembley Arena when I worked at Wembley but I didn’t bother going to see them. Higher rating now than then because of the lyrics and Gaynor bumped into Noel in Waitrose in Beaconsfield when she pitched his trolley and he was nice to her🤓
I’m not a fan of Oasis so was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this by the end. Although front loaded by some of the most uninspiring rock music I’ve ever heard, something happens to this record halfway through Columbia and it becomes louder, more earnest and more interesting. Fav track: Slide Away

It's alright. Maybe if they stuck with this type of sound, they wouldn't be the bastard of the Britpop 3: illegitimate usurpers to the rightful throne of Britpop which, in my opinion, belongs to either Blur or Pulp. But back to this: it's Britpop, optimistic compared to across-the-Atlantic grunge, but it has its shades of punk and northern-tinged sardonicism, lending it some hair on its nether regions. And Liam's vocals--a mainstream version of PiL Johnny Lydon--add a layer of gleeful insouciance. But it does lose its charm when half of the tracks are greater than or hover around five minutes in length and they're really not that groundbreaking. They're not the Sex Pistols/PiL, they're not The Clash, fucking a, they're nowhere near Squeeze; they don't reach anywhere close to real post-punk badass abandon, nor are they concise enough to craft a legit pop-rock killer LP. Still, it was enjoyable, and it shows that Oasis did actually have something going, a smidge of potential. Too bad they totally lost it just a few years later. What utter gobshite they devolved into, ugh.

Enjoyable, some singable hits on here. I've always liked oasis but never got there global success. I think they are very inoffensive. A lot like pesto pasta, there's nothing wrong with it, it since, but you wouldn't mind something more.

Ya it was alright. Oasis I mean, like, yeah. It was Oasis, they have 3-4 songs i really like and then everything else sounds the same.
I generally don’t like Oasis, they are supposed to be anthemic but if I want anthems I would go to Alarm, Big Country and U2. I think they were part of that whole Britpop debacle and the artists I liked during that mad time didn’t really fit into that genre so it passed me by. Having said that, I have had a look and the songs I find okay of theirs are on their What’s the Story Morning Glory album (little nod to Nilsson there) and so I will wait for that album, which I am prettttty sure is on here to make up my mind.
Apart from the final track, it sounded like one long song. Still enjoyable, though.

I was in Oasis as a teen. Live Forever was absolutely something to listen to when you were in the throes in your bedroom. Anyways, I don't know that it's aged well as an entire album for me. The second half was not nearly as fun as I remember.

I don't love Oasis' bluster. I think it's absurd for them to claim they are bigger than the Beatles. But if I put aside their persona, their music is not bad. The tracks I liked on this album are the big ones: Live Forever and Supersonic.
I neither buy into Oasis's self-generated hype, nor can I bring myself to dislike them on general principle. With those extreme removed, I feel like you are left with 2-3 solid singles, surrounded by a bunch of songs whose primary sin is just sounding too fuzzily similar. Lowish 3.

Ok, volgens mij is dit het vervolgalbum van Whats the story morning glory. Daar was ik niet zo weg van, maar misschien is mn smaak wat veranderd of ben ik heel erg in de Oasis mood? Live forever pakt me in elk geval best wel, en de eerste 2 nummers luisteren ook wat lekkerder weg dan ik hiervoor vond. Al was Champagne Supernova een prachtnummer. Vooral Wonderwall leidde tot problemen bij me. Maar goed, het gaat nu over Definitely Maybe, sowieso een banger van een album titel. Het is iets minder standaard rockmuziek dan het vorige album vind ik. De muziek klinkt beter, al gaat Oasis wel nog steeds voor VEEL GELUID. Liam, of Noel, heeft een funny klagende manier van zingen, maar misschien is dat wel gewoon typisch Brits. Het past ergens wel bij de teksten ofzo? Ik weet niet, trek het beter dan het vorige album, waarschijnlijk omdat het wat alternatiever is en iets bijzonderder? Whats the story is naar mijn mening meer een poprock album, terwijl dit wat anders is. Geen 4 sterren, maar wel een sterke 3 sterren, wel ff luisteren naar niets want het volume is wel vermoeiend. This is a pretty solid album. The songs are all pretty good and catchy, but a couple are forgettable. Oasis seems to have trouble ending some songs when I think they should and they drag a bit. Standouts were "Rock 'n' Roll Star" "Up In The Sky" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol" All in all, pretty solid. I'd say nothing to write home about but a good collection of fun tunes. A pretty good effort for a debut album! 3/5 for me.

I like this more than their other album. There is more of a bite, it's a bit more exciting. There seems to be more emphasis on riffs (Cigarettes & Alcohol sounds like T Rex) and there are some good solos like Bring It On Down. The muddy production probably helps as well, if feels more sleazy and probably gives it a better sense of personality than a squeaky clean, sleek style The production is a bit of a double-edged sword though as after a while a lot of it starts getting kind of samey as the instruments are constantly muddled together. The way the end of words is stretched out is sort of annoying too, like Live Foreveeeeaaaaaaaaaah This is a decent album, and I didn't expect to say that because I started the generator not liking Oasis at all. I wasn't there when they were the biggest band in the world but even people younger than me idolise this stuff so I have to just admit I don't really get it Highlights: Rock 'N' Roll Star
Oasis is one of those bands I’d love to rediscover now, without the prejudices of my teens. They’re one of those bands I really want to like, but they just don’t do anything for me. Maybe it’s Liam’s voice, maybe it’s his cocky attitude, maybe it’s that I can’t listen without “I SAID MAYBEEEEEEEEE” playing on loop in my head, or maybe I just can’t connect with what they sing. It’s not you, it’s me. Still, I gave it a proper listen, and at times I caught Beatles vibes, just with that ’90s irreverence.

Fun, peppy pop - lots of fluff, not a ton of substance.
Good, not great, though the next record would be much closer to great, before the returns quickly got diminishing to the point of disappearing. Gets off to bad start because rock and roll songs about rock and roll are notably – and famously – passe. High and undeniable doofiness factor, especially lyrically (e.g., “Feelin’ supersonic / Give me gin and tonic;" "she did it with a doctor/in a helicopter”) which is perhaps an occupational hazard for bands of the people. While most tracks are solid (and pretty straightforward, if overdone), only “Live Forever” truly stands out as approaching anything like transcendence. Feels like a slog when it’s meant to soar. Do they need to repeat “slide away” a dozen and a half times in a row to end that otherwise fine song? Was it thought that the repetition would make it seem more important or, like, heavier? Plus it’s overlong, patience-testingly so. The overall effect is of a big fat wedge of chugging and bludgeony and samey and laddish rock embicility. Again, morning glory is much the better record. Please, people don’t but reunion tour tix or we’ll never see the back of these allegedly populist yobs. Better than Blur, sure but not by much. And suffers from the same problem: they are not nearly as clever or cool as they think they are and it was mostly knuckleheads who made them think so in the first place.

Probably a victim of over hype. Oasis is so popular that this album feels like a let down. In a vacuum, it would probably be 4 stars. But I was expecting more from it. Is it unfair to rate it lower for that reason? Maybe.

It's alright. I didn't hate it but after a while all the songs sound the same and I started to wonder when each damn track was going to finally be over, especially on the back half. (What's the Story) Morning Glory was one of my first CDs but I don't think I've ever listened to this one before, probably because I assumed the above would be true.
Like most Americans, I liked Oasis but mostly for their 2nd album, plus when this when came out raising a family was priority # 1, listening to family friendly stuff like Barney etc. If I could rewind I’d pay more attention to the brotherly love show.

Today was a busy day and I didn’t get completely through it although largely familiar with the band and their hits in the 90s. The songs I didn’t know feel comfortable and familiar but something about the mix just isn’t right…the tone is too bright and annoyingly fuzzy on several songs especially those early on. In short, I didn’t hear anything that was truly new or amazing which summarizes my feelings about the band decades ago. Live Forever and Wonderwall are brilliant…everything else just sort of feels meh. 3/5

Rock 'n' Roll star is a great energy opening. A lot of the happiness I get from this is probably nostalgia. I didn't play Oasis songs but heard the album a lot with my brother. As a result I didn't over listen to it since and it comes as a nice return.
My review of this is very influenced by the fact that I originally listened to this over two days. I'd had to break my listen yesterday afternoon so listened to the last 3 tracks this morning. My experience was so different I ended up going back and having a second listen. First time through Liam's vocal style and stretched vowels dominated, not always grating but overpowering. Second time the music came to the front, the guitar and percussion uncovered. Both times Supersonic and Cigarettes and Alcohol stood out, Married with Children was also a nice finish, I'd have liked to have more of that.
Rock n Roll Star - good statement of intent song for a debut album Shaker Maker - not sure this aged as well. The Coca Cola advert music bit jars against an otherwise ok song Live Forever - this is well written. Noel Gallagher showing a bit of talent. Hard for me to enjoy with fresh ears given how many times I’ve heard this belted out karaoke style. Good single, madly over played Up in the Sky - is more interesting. Stone Roses influenced rock. Meaningless lyrics. Wish the whole album went with this sound Columbia - this is pretty forgettable, sounds like Heathen Chemistry. It’s not bad but it’s not good either Supersonic - again over played. But this is probably as strong as they get. The low sludge guitar works on this. Nonsense lyrics but not annoyingly. Chorus is good Bring on Down - kind of forgettable. Nice vibe to second half of the song. A couple minutes of rock no singing Cigarettes and Alcohol - best song on the album alongside Supersonic. Sure it’s a set format pop song. But it’s anthemic in a way that doesn’t grate for me Digsys Dinner - sounds like a demo take. Absolute garbage. Slide Away - Noel can write. Loses it a bit on the bridge. Refreshing to get an attempt at some reflective lyrics. Ends up getting shoe horned into a big chorus though “ Slide Awaayyyy” Married with Children - sounds like something Blur would write. Makes you realise why Liam doesn’t sing on the quiet songs Strong 3/5
I loved this album as a child. I was a big Oasis fan at one time, after many years away my memories of it is better then actually sticking it on. Rock n Roll star is a great opener - lots of energy and personality. I also loved closing tracks Slide Away and Married with Children, which really caught me. But then there’s songs like Shakermaker which have aged very badly. This song has the especially unforgiving placement of track 2. The most impressive thing about this debut is that despite them being heavily inspired by The Stone Roses (note how Noel sings “SHINNNNEEE”) they have a very clear identity of its own. This identity is lost on later records.
My first full Oasis album, something I’ve been avoiding my whole life. Actually pretty solid and could be a 4 if Liam’s voice and personality didn’t grate on me quite so much.

OK! So I've never listened to more than the one oasis song lol. But I feel like I wasn't expecting such upbeat rock. I know that a lot of people LOVE Oasis. It's very stoner rock-ish. I don't really mind it, but I don't know if I like it per say. It's sorta boring me lol, all washing into one. Jk! It really picked up in the middle! Okay so this one is fine. I wouldn't be opposed to someone else listening to it, but I would never listen to it on my own. It's not bad, just not to my taste. I liked the slower songs on the album, so that seems to be my preferred Oasis vibe apparently.

Unlike albums like Out of the Blue, I'm not already an Oasis fan, so this album is pretty forgettable to me. Got a few solid tracks, though I'm unaware of what the singles are. Very early The Who vibes from me.

Well I’m a bit disappointed. All good songs and vibes, generally a good album, yet nothing significant in there for me, perhaps I needed to let it sink in. Nothing grabbed me by the collar, nothing had me in a chokehold. I’m not amazed. It did not do the thing that don’t look back in anger does for me. Sadly.

When this album came out, I hated it. I still don't like Oasis or the ego they present to this day. It was really rich of them to come out and say they're the next Beatles and everyone should worship us. Neither one of these goons could even come close to writing a song as good as John Lennon or George Harrison. Album is OK, Nothing special as they would want you to think. 3.05/5 = 3 stars
For whatever reason I never really got into this album back in the day. Live Forever is great. Supersonic is ok. Cigarettes & Alcohol sounds like a cover of Bang a Gong. A bunch of the songs drag on a bit at the end. There are some pretty great riffs.
I would have told you that I’d definitely heard Oasis’ debut album. Maybe? But it turns out that most of it is not familiar to me. I know “Live Forever.” It’s a great song. But the rest of the album is just good. Overall it’s just not on the same level as “What’s the Story, Morning Glory.”
Really a 3.5, definitely, maybe…
What a difference a year made. From this baseline of promising mediocrity came (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? The Gallagher brothers learned, evolved, and stepped up their game. I’m not quite sure why this album is on the list.
Just... ok. First time listening to Oasis voluntarily and I find it all sounded the same after a while.
Dude, again? There are too many bands out there to have multiples of the same artist.. You can't deny the hits, but I don't like Oasis and I'm not going to start now, so I'll give this a 3.
Well, it's okay, this jangly-retro Britpop album. It's kinda funny, Liam's bratty vowel-maxxing delivery, opening wide to make the most out of every dipthong and tripthong. The album neither bothers me nor particularly thrills me. If you asked me if I liked it, I might reply "definitely maybe."
