Reviews (page 8 of 13)
It's decent, but it doesn't have that special Prince magic yet
70min on liian pitkä kesto albumille.
A bit strange that other 80s pop groups get slated for how their sound on here but the reviews for this are positive. Not that it bothers me, I enjoy those elements This could have been pretty good but I don't like a lot of the choices made. These songs are just too long. DMSR just kept going and didn't justify it's own length at all, could've cut it in half and it would be much better. There's also some weird and annoying stuff that detracts, like the moaning sounds that go on for fucking ages on Lady Cab Driver There's a strong album in here but for me it needs a lot of editing to smooth the rough edges Highlights: Little Red Corvette
Best Song: 1999. A goofy little song that makes the turn of the century actual feel like a party. Worst Song: Free. Overwrought and oversung. Overall: Prince is always baseline kinda fun to listen to, but this still sounds way too 80s for me. It felt like a lot of filler tracks, with not enough of the bombastic energy that makes Prince special.
Little long but good listen
I want to start this review by saying Purple Rain is one of my favorite songs of all time. I really wanted to like this one, but I think the dated synth sounds were just too much for me. It's a bit of a drag.

3.1
The first three tracks and Lady Cab Driver are brilliant. One star for each; minus one star for making us listen to everything in between. It changed the music industry so it definitely belongs on any list. I loved it as a kid. But it's cursed by his obsession with FM synths (up there with nuclear weapons as one of the worst inventions of the 20th Century) and that Linn-drum machine. (Imagine these tracks with a drummer to match the incredible bass playing? (Just listen to how much the human snare drum adds to Lady Cab Driver.) Prince's creativity, virtuosity, and ability to pass seamlessly between genres are on full display and stunning. But the songwriting drops off significantly after Delirious, and the horrid pads, bells and robotic percussion that line every track just did not age well.
Solid album from Mr Nelson hitting his purple patch with this and the later albums
Correcto
Mainly for little red corvette and the incredible lyrics to international lover
Enjoyed this but the middle fell off a bit for me. Didn't realize that Prince was so horny. Fave songs: 1999, DMSR
idk how to put this to words but i respect prince more than i love him, third album on this list with under 50 generated and i want to like him more than i do like him he is ridiculously virtuosic, capable of expressing himself in a highly articulate manner across all genres, this is what gives this project its identity and, at the same time, in my opinion, what makes it emotionally distant
Gonna stick to the hits
The album "Purple Rain" I understand. But this album making the list? A couple of decent song and the rest that all sound like the same synth chords over and over. "Little Red Corvette" is an amazing song, however.
Dance music / toe tapper / some tracks easy listening
Got some bops. Good to clean the kitchen to before a dinner party
Second half was nice grooving funk
I like the atmosphere of the album. Its artificial, upbeat, bloated, energetic soundscape sheds light to the desperate darkness which surrounds it.
The beginning of the album is phenomenal, but then the songs towards the middle and the end just drag on and don’t stand out. I only need to listen to the first 3-4 songs to get the best out of this album. The tunes are uptempo and classic 80s, which I enjoy, and when Prince is on, he makes some great music. But the album in total is just okay.
153. nice
Ive only heard the title song 1999. Little red corvette has a sound that I really enjoyed. Delirious is a glorp ass beat lmfao. Lets pretend we're married - mid, no notes. Very glorpy album, Im not a fan of Prince's trademark outro (i.e. 1999 "why does he have a bomb", similar tunes in other ones too)
Some bangers Good energy all the way through Didn't resonate with too much
De trommer på something in the water for eksempel.
To virkelig gode startere, 1999 og Little Red Corvette.
Album #83: 1999 - Prince Genre (W): Minneapolis sound, funk, synth-pop, R&B, dance, new wave Singles: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, Automatic, Let’s Pretend We’re Married I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: Prince is a talented person, able to play multiple instruments and layer each individually on top of one another. I love his ability to create grooves in the tracks, however, I feel like certain tracks drag on for a bit too long. Favorite songs: Side A, Let’s Pretend We’re Married*, Automatic, Free, All the Critics Love U in New York
I go back and forth on how I feel about Prince, and by that I go back and forth on how I feel about this album. At moments I really like it, and really enjoy the more funky side of Prince, and at moments I'm like "ehh, this ain't for me." But the majority of it is hitting for me. I'm going back and forth between a 3 and a 4. So I'll go with 3 for this as it's probably a 3.5.
Good
Sharp and clean, still I'm missing the raw potency of Purple Rain
starting on may 2nd veamos que tal! No se si la compresión es por spotify o del album en si sounds somewhat dated but it's charming about it. Horny as hell.
Em, I feel awful, nothing wrong with it but hard to describe as better than fine
I was in no way ready for Prince's music when it was popular. I was too young for this album, and for the four that preceded it. I was wrapped up in my white suburb's homophobia, misogyny and self-hatred, like a can of Slime squeezed by zombie's fist. It took my beloved high school friends who loved Purple Rain to even reveal his music to me; and it took "Kiss" to convince me that he was a pop genius. Listening to it now, I hear the skill, the joy, the complexity of his music. I'm rating it based on its importance in my life.
ok 2.9
A generational talent undermined by his generation's shitty production techniques.
Fav song: Little Red Corvette
Favorite songs: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious
Went by ridiculous quickly? Didn't have the impact of other Prince LPs.
Pretty good, but obviously Let's Get Crazy is the best one. A lot of similar sounding songs though which I don't always appreciate
1982. Seen as Prince's breakthrough album.
I respect Prince as an artist, and this album is very prototypically Prince. He is an amazing musical talent: vocalist, instrumentalist, and producer. It is evident on this album. I find that I'm not particularly a fan of his though. This album has its moments for sure, but overall, I could take it or leave it. It is a good album though.
I just don’t think I’m a Prince guy. Whenever the instrumentals pull me in, the lyrics take me right back out. “Your seat cushion may be used as a floatation device” followed by squealing and moaning? *sigh* I will choosing to fly Spirit over Prince airlines.
Prince is good but mj better
Such an incredible start to an otherwise okay album. Shame that the rest of the album follows 1999 and little red corvette in track listing only.
Buckle up friends, we're headed to the Horny Zone. No seriously. Buckle up. Horny time. Look, I've got nothing but respect for Prince. He was a singular artist with a strong vision and generational chops. The thing is, I've never really been able to connect with his music. It's fun, but not really my cup of tea. This album is no exception. The songs are super danceable and ear catching, but something about the 80's excess and over the top production of it all just throws me off. I was nodding my head, but also grimacing at certain moments. There's just not a lot of subtlety here, it's all waving right in your face. These shiny, wingdings-style songs. I can get down to it, and some of the tracks made me listen a little closer (shout out to Something In The Water) but overall it's just a bit much for me. 3/5.
I know Prince is one of the greats, but I’ve never really felt like I got his music. People often talk about how meticulous he was in the studio. The band rehearsed everything and had to nail the take. But it just sounds mechanical and dull to me. Little Red Corvette is an awesome song though. But I think I like that songs when he shows more self-doubt and vulnerability. I even prefer the more loose style of this song. Some of the lyrics are layered over each other, so I’m not really even sure what he said. It's just more interesting.
It was a little too 80s cheesy for me at times which is crazy because I love the 80s. The hits were hits for a reason, everything else was fine. I like Prince's earlier stuff more.
1999
Couple of bangers then Peter's out 3 st
The title track and Little Red Corvette are certified bangers. DMSR is okay (would be a banger if it were half its length). This is probably Prince's second-best album (out of what, 30?). But volume doesn't get you quality (except for you, Stevie. All your albums are quality). I dunno, I've never been a huge Price fan. He's an underrated guitar player, clearly the best '80's synth-pop artist, but does that really get you multiple albums here? Purple Rain for sure, but this one's a stretch for me.
Light funky pop. You know 1999, it is a good song. What's interesting is that this draws together a lot of genres and sounds and sounds like late 80s pop. But it's from only 1982, which is surprising! What's up with production on Little Red Corvette, I'm sure I'm hearing clipping and distortion. Ooh, explicit lyrics on Let's Pretend We're Married, didn't expect that from a pop song. Definitely a lyrical theme: partying and sex. But in that oddball Prince way And each track is a long version which is nice. Time for each to settle in and explore. Overall you can see the vision and song-writing skill, but it doesn't resonate with me. Best track - Let's Pretend We're Married, Lady Can Driver 3 stars
Stated off so well with the first couple songs but dragged on
would be higher but its too long
Not my fav, but I can totally see how this album paved the way for others. 1999 & Can We Pretend We're Married were v good, otherwise the instrumentals tickled my ears, not much else.
6 - AVERAGE
I love Prince, but man some of the songs on this one could stand to be so much shorter.
The early 80s were a scary time to be alive. A gung-ho elderly president in the White House and the imminent threat of nuclear war at any moment - oh, wait, guess things haven’t changed all that much. Anyway, we all lived with dreams of purple skies and people running everywhere, so Prince’s song 1999 was a perfect encapsulation of the zeitgeist of partying in the face of Armageddon. The follow up single Little Red Corvette similarly caught the spirit of the hedonistic materialism of the era, although there were some lines alluding to casual sex that might have raised a few eyebrows if you listened closely and knew what a packet of Trojans was. Anyone who bought the album off the back of the singles without being previously aware of Prince’s oeuvre was in for an extremely rude awakening by the time they got to tracks like “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” which leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The opening tracks aside, I don’t think that the rest of this album holds up particularly well, at least compared to his later work, with too much reliance on early drum machines and weedy 80s production. This was a double album and too many songs are stretched way too thin and even the remastered version fails to rescue them.
Free: "Be glad that you are free. Un recordatorio necesario que encontré en este álbum de 1982."
Songs are fun though long. Liked the ones I knew the best and also All the Critics.
Why was this album so long? There were some great tracks, but I got bored at the end as they continued on far longer than I was interested in listening to them. The title track, of course, holds a lot of fond memories for me. I missed this album when it came out because I was quite young, but I distinctly remember driving home from a New Year's party ringing in 1999, and listening to the radio where the DJ had this song on repeat the entire drive home.
Good music, but not really my favorite kind.
I appreciate prince and his legacy but just isn’t my thing. Some groovy jams on here and all though.
This is another example of an album that I was glad to have the opportunity to listen to, because I have heard of Prince, but never listen too much of his music. I mostly liked what I discovered. In some ways he reminds me of Michael Jackson, but he's a little bit more experimental and a lot more overly sexual. That was probably my least favorite part of the album, as well as some of his singing. He's clearly a very skilled vocalist, but similar to the Jah Wobble Album, I liked his background vocals more than the lead vocals, because they're over performative and have less tonal integrity. That's most of the bad things I have to say about this album. otherwise, I liked it a lot. A lot of these songs were catchy, some were very funky, and there was still a bit of variety and experimentation and trippy tracks mixed in. I thought it was impressive how he could structure an entire song around one groove, but still keep it interesting for up to 8 minutes by adding variation and different sections. Still, I could've done without a few of the sections (especially the ones where he's talking about or imitating sex), and I think a few of these tracks could've been shorter. DMSR was definitely my favorite., but there were many other moments with funky bass and guitar that I liked throughout the album. also tough to decide between three and four...
I respect it, but it's not for me. There's a lot of creative energy on display. It gets crazy and surreal at times, which I like. Lots of funky, tasteful arrangements, tasteful uses of the new electronic instruments in the 80s This was definitely worth listening to, especially since I hadn't listened to any Prince before. I can see why he was iconic
Despite Prince being by far the greatest live performance I have ever seen, I don't love listening to his music. And I especially not a fan of his more "story song" style songs. And the problem is, a lot of this album (and most of his albums really) is that kind of song with only a couple of his hits.
Feels like purple rain without purple rain. So good, but not great in my opinion. Plus I felt very uncomfortable
Hell yeah, Prince.
First half of the album was great. Second half felt like filler
The bangers are bangers, the other funkier songs were intricate, beautiful -- sometimes boring.
It's not as good as batman, but what is? Favorite Track: D.M.S.R.
The 10-year old me and one of my sisters made a dance routine for 1999 and knew all the lyrics. All these years later and just the opening chords brings back the lyrics… although I won’t try and remember or replicate the moves… Also pretty sure we didn’t understand all the lyrics, or connotations, at the time. This is the first time I believe I’ve listened to the album the track was on. Apart from 1999 and Little Red Corvette I’m not sure if I’ve heard most of the tracks here. Overall I wasn’t all that impressed. It’s ok but certainly no Purple Rain.
meh
Little to long
Did not like this album's start, really liked how it ended. I came around on this one as some good club music that was disco adjacent, and as some nice summer music. Favorite track was Lady Cab Driver for sure, that ones a banger.
its a classic i guess first time heard it prince is insane most of the songs were a miss (not for me) favs: Delirious, Free
I dont know what the big deal is about him. He is alright, but certainly doesnt measure up to the hype, in my estimation
Crazy synths and melodies for that time, love prince. Also love the rhythm. He did a great job on this one
Prince is awesome! This album definitely #Funks it up to a degree unimaginable by 80s minds, but the years haven't been the kindest to it imo. Standouts: Let's Pretend We're Married • D.M.S.R • All The Critics Love U In New York
Maybe Im just not in the mood
I'm not a fan of Prince. I even like synth-pop. The first half of this album is terrible. The second half even holds up. For a long time, I wanted to give it a ★★, but let it have a ★★★
really long but nice
some of the songs were just too long
No me desagradó.
- he wants her bad - horn dog, but I guess fun about it - good background music vibes - I hate the moaning and crying sound effects - calm down
Great!
My fav International Lover
Just in the studio doing shit. I dig.
𝟣𝟫𝟫𝟫 highlights Prince’s musicality at its peak, blending funk, pop, and electronic elements into a polished and often infectious sound. The grooves are tight, the arrangements detailed, and there’s a clear sense of creativity running through the album. At the same time, the album feels overly long. Even though the individual tracks are strong, the overall length makes it harder to stay engaged, and I found myself wondering when it would finally end.
Zasto je princ tako horny ??? Hahahahahha legenda.
Several great songs but it became a little repetitive and self indulgent by the end
Enjoyable but overlong
Great album, feels like there might be quite a lot more Prince to come…3 lovely stars…
Thought I was listening to mj
Probably my second favorite prince album after purple rain. Feels a little long towards the back half though.
Starts off extremely hot and kinda gets a little softer with every song, still a solid album overall, you don't get to to hear much experimental funk on this list.
Always loved Prince’s songs but never listened to a full album by him! 3/5 Favorites: Little Red Corvette, International Lover
A lot of the songs are rather samey sounding and the subject matter is decidedly not for me
Mid
Bit all over the place. There's the hits, there's the garbage, and there's the average songs.
Not exactly my thing, but it's a good and interesting thing.
His early years. He's got it, but it's early and needs germinating before the Purple Rain era. It's not bad though, I like lady taxi driver and little red corvette.
Fun! Not my genre but a classic of funk-pop-soul. Prince was an artist and I respect that. More stars are deserved but cannot go against my gut.
Previously biased against Prince, but I would love to be proven wrong so we'll give it another shot. 1999 - Fine. Heard it countless times. Reminds me of an inside joke, so that's nice I guess. Little Red Corvette - More of a jam than expected. Could be enjoying myself a lot less. Delirious - That's Prince for sure. Standard minimal production - to be expected. Vaguely irritated by the extended instrumental outro that doesn't really change or do anything interesting, but not overly offended. Let's Pretend We're Married - Reminded of early Depeche Mode. The silly synth stabs at the end of phrases during the pre-chorus made me chuckle. Unhinged vibes won me over in the middle, though he's hitting me with another extended instrumental outro that just repeats the same riff we've been listening to the whole time. Four for four at this point with that. D.M.S.R. - John Lennon vocals? With Grace Jones instrumental. I can dig overall. Not blown away, but sure. Ending kind of scary. Automatic - Fun weird vocal effects in the middle, but I did check to see if we were near the end and we sure are not. Vibing considerably less to this one, but we'll see if he can't stick the landing.... in another two and a half minutes. Good lord, things are happening in this extended instrumental outro. Consider my expectations subverted. Oh just kidding that was the end. Well alright. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) - Quite like the energy of this track so far. Great frenetic drum loop and strange sounding synth hit. Kind of giving Meredith Monk x Michael Jackson. Really dug that one. My favorite so far by far. Free - Not sure I'm in the mood for a doo-wop ballad after that last one, but we'll see what happens. Yeah, not about that one so much. Kind of fizzles out at the end too, which is definitely the point, but I feel sort of let down by it. Lady Cab Drive - Funky. Some ear-pleasing keyboard solos going on. Quite liking this half rap second verse with the lady moaning/distressed in the background. Don't feel like the entire song lives up to its own potential, but I don't half mind while it's on. All the Critics Love U in New York - Full on Grace Jones going on here. Really fucking with this instrumental on this. And the swirly hypnotic texture that happens in this second chorus line, that's awesome. Quite like this one. Wonder if Prince ever listened to Ms. Jones? ... International Lover - Got more of the falsetto Prince vocals going on with this one, which I'm enjoying more now than I usually do. Nice contrast. Jazzy business. An enjoyable closer. Still not blown away but nice. Can't fault this thing for being what it is. It sure is funky, but I'm just not wowed by the musicality or the composition of these songs. The band kills it, but it sort of feels like any decent band could have killed this material. All that said, I could definitely see myself reading back on all this and disappointedly shaking my head. It's definitely the kind of album that I bet I would grow to enjoy after continued listens. But will I continue to listen?
11 songs total on this album, really started to lose me around song 7. everything before that, peak. after that it was downhill. the use of women moaning and crying in his songs is um. disturbing? mostly the crying. something in the water was just. bad. LOL
Quintessential 80’s. Very danceable and “groovy”.
Some catchy songs but didn't love some of the weird vocals.
prince is good at his job!!!
Another technically amazing record that just doesn't tickle my fancy. Prince's joyous future-funk is all just a bit camp for my taste, and the sounds just haven't aged well to my ears. I always like his songs better when done by someone else...
Objectively good but really wasn't to my tastes today. Full of that 80s flair and synth. Reminds me of Bowie although I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I probably just got triggered by that statement
A few fun songs, but a bit inconsistent and I kind of got tired of listening to it before the end.
I didn't realise how much of Prince's music I knew. High energy, fun music. Love partying like it's 1999. Not quite my vibe for ongoing listening though.
Very solid album
This was interesting but not my favorite.
es magistral
Listening session: march 6th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard a few songs before Thoughts: I would give this a 4/5 because of the funkiness but I found the majority of the songs too long so that’s why I have to give a 3/5 Favourite tracks: 1999 & D.M.S.R.
Few big tracks in here but jesus the mans horned to the teeth
An hour of Prince making love to your ears. Not too sure if I consented to it.
its mystery is only exceeded by its power
Too much sex
Starts strong and fades into meh.
Princess Sona hehehe
this is a fun pop album, especially the intros ! very funky and lots of sexual energy.
🎧Some killer, mostly filler. Favorite track: D.M.S.R.
Using modes of transportation as metaphor when explaining one's sex life gets old real fast. The music is great though.
Took Motown and said the quiet part out loud "Let's pretend we're married" is so quaint Literal banger album (aka sintetizzami sto cazzo) Ok but Something in the Water is something else entirely, holy shit
Album starts well but is too long and quite dull after that. 3 stars or C.
1999 song is a classic, the rest are too long
Favoritas: 1999, Little Red Corvette y D.M.S.R
Funny jijijiji
Did not enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I’ve only heard amazing things about prince but this felt like funky unfinished jam sessions than something cohesive. First two songs really started great and free has some replay ability.
Lots of talent here, but damn, Prince *really* needed to get laid at this point in his career...
3/5. Songs were longer than I am used to. Favorite song is Little Red Corvette.
How am I just finding out Prince is horny as hell? Clearly, my first experience with Prince and that's definitely my bad. Most of these songs are undeniably too long, but only like one stinker among them (looking at you Automatic). Funky as fuck throughout.
Started out promising but it fizzled out towards the end. The tracks are too long, a lot of the speaking segments are just pure cringe, some of the songs feel like they shouldn't even be on the album they're just too different.
FUN!!! Charisma, i guess 🤷♀️ Player. Life of the party. Persuation. Free is my favourite. Sexy... Romantic 3/5
It's really a pity than a man of such incredible talent makes albums with mostly crappy kitsch-pop songs (in line with the cover art). The hits are OK, the rest is mostly filler. It doesn't groove. Drums (are they even real drums) are mostly simplistic book-shack-boom-shack. The synths haven't aged well. Prince has a few great songs but not so much on this album. I know I'm supposed to rave about Prince but I just don't get his music. His talent and the fact that he can play 25 or so instruments, and that he's dead, are all irrelevant. I'll still give it a three just because I definitely hear he has lots of talent.
Not my favorite. Ok to listen to, but I may have been in the wrong headspace for it.
A classic Prince album. A little funky. I like it but probably not a record I would buy.
I don’t know if I’ll ever truly “get” Prince. A couple of good songs and a bunch of shit I’d rather not listen to.
mmmm overrated
I really wanted to like this more than I did. This kind of stripped back funk doesn't do it for me, it doesn't feel like the music is going anywhere when you're just getting the same two-bar guitar riff over static bass and drums for 99% of a song. Hadn't realised quite how old this album is, always though it was late 80s.
legal, mas so gostei de algumas
A couple of nice songs, the rest of it flows but nothing exciting about it. The album is long and you get tired of it. 2.5
Started strong. I like Prince a ton but these songs are so long
Great
Great album. "Little Red Corvette" is one of my favorites.
This album doesn’t really seem to know what it’s doing. It starts out really strong and then gets a bit samey at the end. Disappointing.
Started off great with first 2 songs then all got a bit samey as the album went on
an extremely horny man weaves some tightly-knit but sometimes goofy jazz synth pop madness. inconsistent overall, but it has the unmistakable sound of the 80s. 3.5/5
Couple of big hits and some very funky tunes. 3.5
Solid... not my favorite (it's no "Purple Rain").
It's like okay. I lost concentration like halfway through most of the songs. Definitely a good album but not my favorite.
I'd not listened to this album before but my preconception was that it was a short pop funk album with a couple of hits (1999, Little Red Corvette) on it. I thought it was only around the time of Sign o' the Times that he started getting into double album, sprawling 8 minute track territory. It's a good album with excellent musicianship but some of the songs were just too self-indulgent and could have done with some pruning.
1999 and Little Red Corvette is such a strong way to open an album and sets the mood for an upbeat groove of an album. I absolutely love the guitar on 1999, it’s such a great song that i dont think you should trust anyone who doesn’t like it. D.M.S.R delivers on the funk and has such an infectious groove to it which makes it difficult to dislike….but at over 8 monutes it pushes its luck. I guess this has always been my issue with Prince, he is an unquestionable genius but he is so prolific that it feels he needed reigning in a bit more at times. This feeling isnt helped by the appearance of automatic, which isnt as enjoyable and is even longer in duration. The last 3 and a half minutes would be unnecessary on the 12” remix let alone as an album track. Something in the water finally provides a shorter length track, but unfortunately fails to deliver on the song front. The funk laden backing is replaced by musical equivalents of a builders yard and doesn’t make for an enjoyable listen. Lady cab driver brings back the overblown pointlessly long track length. Overall as with most Prince, there is much to enjoy but it is held back by the tendency to be overblown. Someone just needed to tell him no occasionally.
There are a lot of superlatives you can use to describe Prince and, honestly, I expected the use of them for this album too. But actually, this album hasn’t aged well at all. It was too long. There were too many of those spoken fade-outs at the end of songs, and far too many of those were questionable - I knew they would be overtly sexual, but less is more. You also have the problem of front loading the album with two bonafide classics. “1999” was the first Prince song I ever heard (guess when that was!) - it still sounds just as incredible as it did the first time I ever heard it. “Little Red Corvette” is my favourite of Prince. It’s smooth, and I love the backing vocals too. It’s perfect. I waited for everything after that came after to be as good as those opening two tracks, but I was left disappointed. You can’t doubt Prince and his abilities as a talented musician on the album though.

I love Purple Rain but I've surprisingly never heard any other Prince albums aside from that one. This definitely *feels* like the precursor to Purple Rain but I can definitely tell it's situated in the 1980s. There are definitely parts of this album that made me uh; feel certain ways. I didn't necessarily care for all of on the nose sex stuff. Like nothing against it, but Purple Rain does it SO MUCH BETTER. It was a nice '80s listen but I doubt I'll be revisiting this anytime soon.
2-3 songs are good, the rest is completely out of my taste
I think I simply don’t get the hype with Prince. This album was fine, pretty funky and danceable, but the lyrics are very cringey, it goes on far too long, and it’s just nothing to get that excited about. It’s also very dated to my ears.
best: all the critics love u in new york
eh. not something i personally enjoy, but i can see how his music influenced artists and helped evolve modern music
The beginning of the album is excellent. After that, I don’t know what exactly is going on.
Quintessential
Hadn't realised how much it used programmed drums, or how really horny it is.
An 80s Prince album, exciting! First thought after finishing the album is that Prince must be one of the thirstiest artists we've had on this list. Maybe it's his singing style, or some of his lyrics ('Let's Pretend We're Married'), or both that makes me feel that way. Overall the album feels very poppy and has some ups and downs, but feels a bit front-loaded with '1999', 'Little Red Corvette', and 'Delirious' being my favourite songs on the album. Despite having fairly few tracks, the album feels quite long with its 1 hour and 10 minutes runtime. It overextends itself a bit, where some songs just keep on trucking without really becoming more or less interesting over time. I think it could have been much more enjoyable if it was tightened and cut down a bit.
Love the title song and a couple of others, but in general the album lacks songwriting - more sensuality-driven one
Prince is so gifted, but this album and its experimentation misses for me. The synths too often stand out as harsh against the smoothness of the funk and r&b that grounds the sound. Others are just too long without a significant structural change. There are definitely some tracks I wasn't familiar with that I'll be adding to my personal roster. And something tells me that this album will likely grow on me with repeated listens. 1999 Litte Red Corvette
Quite a sexy record, though I'm not sure if it's in a good or bad way. Favourite Track(s): Lady Cab Driver Least Favourite Track(s): Free
I love Prince. He's a tiny, horny genius in the top three guitar players of all time. There are some god tier songs here, but much like a very rich dessert, too much becomes cloying and unpalatable. A whole album was fine, but i stopped enjoying it after a while. Im glad the world has a Prince, but im not going back to this album again.
Love the long version of 1999 on here, brings back gooood memories, I can see why prince was so popular too.
0/11 bekannt 6/10 Beste Songs: Automatic, delirious, international lover Erinnert mich an manchen Stellen an „Toad sings chandelier“
Prince might be a genius but this album really only has two songs that were popular... 1999 and Little Red Corvette. There seemed to be a lot of synth on this album. I did enjoy the song "Free". Many of the songs were very long. 6 of the 11 songs are over 6 minutes. The entire album is 70 minutes long. I expected to find a bunch of hidden gems and instead was left wondering what was all the hype about.
I've already listened to his album (45).
Ita like michael Jackson, but a litlle bit worse. I never heard Prince before, this was my first experience with his music. Well its good, just some old pop and kind blues vibe.
Niet het hele album afgeluisterd. Wel van plan nog te doen.
Bonk
I never realized I knew so many prince songs!! Very fun to listen to, but the pop isnt really my vibe
Geht so
Not my favorite Prince album but definitely vibed with some of the tracks. Got to listen to it as I drove past Paisley Park which is pretty cool to think about
I think i like late 80s Prince more. I al rating this a 3 because of the last 2 or 3 songs that pull this up for me.
Prince – 1999 – 3 STARS Prince, one of those artists where I like the hits but would not bother to investigate all his albums. That kind of changed with Purple Rain: after I saw the film my mind was blown with the uniqueness and complexity of his work. I was looking forward to this therefore, but its brought me back down to my preconceived idea of Prince just being about sexy funk. My brother tells me this is not his best album, that I should try Sign O’ the Times so really hoping for some different albums of his on the generator to give me another go to find some love for him.
something went wrong in the 80s
fun listen, but not for me personally
quite interesting, but its overrated. The fact is, this album sounds like any pop slop from its era. Nothing special
Not really my preference, but a solid old school album.
Two great songs.
The album contains some certifiable bangers for sure. However, the album as a whole gets a little stale and boring.
LOVE IT
Nice one
First half of the album was great then I felt like it got more & more chaotic.
The album by the artist formerly known as Prince back when he was currently known as Prince might have formerly sounded quite fresh and maybe even groundbreaking, but currently sounds quite dated.
5/10
not the vibe for today but is a vibe of course lady cab driver is not my favorite favorite song: delirious
🥇all the critics love u in new york 🥈delirious 🥉little red corvette HM: 1999, free
Long repetitive songs, first two ok but meh. 4-5/10
Was a fun listen. So very synthy and princy, some great classic tunes like 1999, a few I could do without. Enjoyed it from a historical perspective as I’ve never listened through a Prince album before, but it wasn’t love.
Quintessentially 80’s. Prince, in his debut track, set the standard of being the horniest man in the world against a barrage of synths, with a few classics sprinkled in here and there. 3 Stars (6/10) Favourites: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver
Feels "of its time" / "of times to come". It feels difficult to evaluate it from a modern perspective; the techniques it uses seem overly simple, but that is with decades of retrospect.
this shouldve been my thing since i'm born in 1999 (U. U)
two prince days in a row. what are the dhances?
This starts off hot with 1999 and Little Red Corvette, but tails off as the album goes on
It's just so overproduced. The underlying music is solid, but it's buried under a mountain of synth, 80s clap beats, and sound effects.
3/5 stars. I was excited to listen to this album and off to a promising start with the 1999, I felt as thought it fell incredibly short with my expectations. There were great hits such as D.M.S.R and little red corvette but delirious was one of my most disliked songs. I admire the usage of synths all throughout the album, perfect for it's time of release and definitely think it could be an easy listening album, but wouldn't be something I'd go out of my way to listen to
Not a fan of double records per se, this one is unfortunally no difference. Yes, it is really well put together and has almost no filler, but in this case, the lyrical content especially towards the end is too much for me.
3/5. A remarkable album that starts off dubiously with the title track, has four excellent songs, and then has a rocky descent down from there. I don't think this album is terribly accessible — ironically the song I like the least is probably its easiest to get into — but it has some real genius tucked away here. I'll start with saying I didn't really get why Prince is so beloved before I started the album. Every past encounter has left me grossly underwhelmed at best to outright repulsed at worst. Which is why I did my damnedest to keep an open mind as I listen. The song '1999"'s popularity is bizarre to me. You have this mind-numbingly boring riff being synthed out on repeat throughout the entirety of the song and an uninspired vocal melody calling over it, the only relief from the monotony being some bog-standard funk guitar fills and obnoxious "oohs!" It's just awful. Maybe you *NEED* to be high on Quaaludes on the dancefloor to enjoy it. "Little Red Corvette" was a really welcome change, what a great song. "Delirious" is a tad less exciting than the prior songs, but it's fun and the standout squeaking hypnotic riff that plays throughout is charming. "Let's Pretend We're Married" is nuts. I love the unison of chime and voice, the unapologetic corniness of the lyrics and the weirdly mystic feel of the melody. It's bizarre and I get the feeling that it'd an awesome song to jam on. "D.M.S.R" is remarkably tame for a song compared to "Let's Pretend ..." both in terms of subject matter and composition. This song feels the most straightforward 80's funk song melodically, harmonically, arrangement, etc., but it does it well. On the other hand, "Automatic" is a little boring and drones on for about twice as long as it ought to. There's some decent stuff here, but there's not enough to keep it interesting. "Something in the Water" is a strange mirror of "Automatic." It's interesting but borders on unlistenable at moments. It's a cool song, and it seems like it's aim was capturing the (Does Not Compute) piece in every aspect, from the rhythm to the dissonant digital runs. "Free" is alright. For me it's weaker than most other songs on the album despite its epic build up and chorus. "Lady Cab Driver" ends up bringing back some rising action to the album, replete with the Prince's absurd interjections. The final two songs, however, sorta reverse the reversal. Both "All the Critics ..." and "International" lack the oomph that characterized the first half of 1999. They're, again, not bad, but cause the album to overstay its welcome.
6.5/10
sex
Pretty good
A lot of disco influence in the album. Maybe too many women crying and/or moaning on some of the tracks. I had only heard 1999 and Little Red Corvette before. I really enjoyed D.M.S.R as a dance track. His vocals and the beats are great throughout the album. Overall a good album, but I don't think I'll be revisiting in full any time soon.
Fine.
Decent
Fun, iconic, though longer than I would have preferred. While this record is a bit before my time, hitting play brought my Millennial self right back to middle school, New Year's Eve 1999, and counting down to the namesake of my generation. I'll never have a pinky-full of Prince's charisma, but this music makes me feel it for a while.
Prince is funky
Was Prince interested in sex? Yikes. Lots of misses among the hits.
First few songs are solid, the rest of the album is pretty mediocre.
I was only 82 years old then.
When Prince works they work in all ways, but there is a lot of meandering on some songs that don't really accomplish much. Good album, some real 10/10 hits, and worth being on the list, but a bunch of this could go.
I still haven't figured out Prince. So much going on production wise. Again, I like the songs with less going on like Lady Cab Driver. It is so long tho for what it is. Too many of the songs hang around longer than needed.
These songs are too long and 80s. Not 80s in a nostalgic way, but in a faintly annoying and off-putting way. Like an old uncle being a bit too silly at the family reunion. I am not part of the cult of Prince.
Hea freaked out Really funky Stuff Like the guitar and fuzzy synths on dmsr And the baseline so funky Def my favourite off this so far Automatic has some nice pads and a solo to learn Scream on something In the water is crazy Free guitar solo mmmm beautiful with the scream Learn about prince guitar tones You can hear how dijons influenced on international lover the singing and vocal inflections 3.5 for me
Increíble para ser de esos años
Well, it sounds like 80s music. Maybe some songs could have been shorter....
👍🏼
Energetic, provocative, and funky. Gets repetitive a bit too quickly, but it is enjoyable.
Appreciate what he did with the Linn LM-1 that created the revolutionary sound.
Funky and danceable. The album is quite long, but I never get tired of it. But it’s not something I like. I’ll never listen to it again. I don’t really get Prince, even if I can appreciate the talent. Of all the songs on here, I think I prefer Free
Very good!
I think I’d only ever heard the radio edit of 1999 prior to listening to this album. While it started strong with the two singles I already knew, I was unfamiliar with the rest and the album didn’t really grab me as a whole.
Cool style, International lover is definitely a hit.
6.5/10 it definitely has some classics on it
idk man Prince is alright but not really for me, also heard he was a bit of a prick. Side note: apparently knew a few Prince songs from Girl Talk
Jus a blast
Some of the songs are way too long
first listen wanted this to sell me on prince but idk if it did. rlly liked some of them, the rest meh! fav: 1999, automatic, all the critics love u in new york, international lover
Prince gonna Prince.
Prince is a classic!
surprisingly good
Good stuff but I feel like some of the songs are unnecessarily long. Very VERY 80s.
Some really nice tracks that just have too much art-pop accoutrements. Didn't need that much moaning ta.
Prince is a genre unto himself... but I thought this album would hold up better than it did for me. Love the first two songs (1999 and Little Red Corvette) but couldn't really get into any others.
The singles on this album are undeniable classics. Full stop. Much of the rest of the record consists of overtly horny and unnecessarily lengthy and repetitive and funky jams. Price is a legend without question. A category of one... but this album was not as enjoyable as I wanted it to be.
"Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?". "War is all around us, my mind says prepare to fight / So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen to my body tonight".
Boring, sounds old. Doesn't really have the same pizazz it did back in the 90s.
I get it, I’m supposed to like prince.
What I love about Prince is the way he fuses R&B and funk with that 80s sound. This album has a couple of huge hits and some good grooves. I was quite surprised by how long the songs are, the average track is around 5–6 minutes, and some even hit 8–9 minutes, which can feel a bit too long and repetitive at times. The opening 3 songs are amazingm 1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious. This is the moment where Prince fully pushed his funk and disco into the digitised, computer age sound. I really appreciate the blend of synth-heavy, robotic electronics with his soul, funk, and pop, almost like Kraftwerk + early hip-hop + Funkadelic + catchy pop all fused together. People always say he’s the King of 80s Pop Rock and Synth-Funk, the King of the 80s in general especially when competing with MJ during the Purple Rain era. This album is completely different from Purple Rain, which I personally prefer, but I still admire what he did here. Lyrically and thematically this album is a bit too erotic for my taste, but I can still appreciate how bold, innovative, and influential it is. Standout tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, D.M.S.R., Something in the Water (Does Not Compute), Lady Cab Driver, International Lover.
I like Prince, but the crying and moaning women irritated me :(
Another Prince album I just can’t appreciate as I think I should.
I've never listened to Prince on purpose before, and I actually thought I would enjoy this because I like the dance style music of this era. But this album was pretty boring.
Low-key bops but I don't think I'll be searching it out again. Maybe background bops
Love Prince! This dragged on a bit as an album (so many 7-9 minute tracks), though it has some amazing songs.
I didn't love this as much as I wanted to. There were some songs that I loved (Little Red Corvette, Free, International Lover), but too many of the others just felt weird or out there.
Prince is an iconic artist. The big tracks on this album are catchy (1999 and Little Red Corvette). The rest is just OK. I already had a sense that Prince had somewhat scandalous/sexy lyrics, but listening to this album through made me realize this even more (some groans would definitely be not safe for work if played out loud).
Some songs were great! But for some reason I couldn’t make it through, it was just a bit dull. Maybe my mood.
Two bangers and a lot of filler.
Guess I’m outing myself, but Prince just doesn’t do it for me. This album started strong, but just went on for too long.
Classic album, I remember listening to the first three tracks of the radio!
Prince is at it again
This is a weird one for sure. Prince seem like one of those artists who is absolutely brilliant, yeah at the same time cover versions of his songs hit better than his. This album simply starts and quickly descends into sex maniac territory with songs that could easily be two thirds the length of what they are. The synths, the funk, the craftsmanship and charm all raise this up beyond the 1 or 2 it could have been.
later
Similar background beat made a lot of the songs sound the same but it was a fun album. Didn’t finish - missed the last 2 songs.
Some really cool songs. Blows my mind that a few are 8 mins long of the same thing over and over again. And over.
It felt like 70 minutes of Prince was a bit much but I did like the album
Enkelte låter blir litt kjedelige og mangler dynamikk. Er heller ikke så glad i lydbildet. Oppleves som lite luft og «grumsete»
it was good
Never really understood the Prince mania, nope that hasn't changed, I mean it's okay for what it is ⭐⭐⭐
The first two tracks are brilliant, but the rest are just ok 3/5
first prince album to be honest never really felt the need and again not really sure of this one. seems to like to repeat a small riff and make a song from it
felt like a video game, kinda fun but probably not going to listen to very often.
this is so 80s it is scary! I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I honestly thought 1999 came out much later (after a quick google I discovered that he did redo it, in 1999). The album starts with the 2 biggest hits on the album, but then it delves into cheesy 80s synths littered with sexual innuendo and a few hints of Prince's guitar prowess. I mean.... come on..."Dance, Music, Sex. Romance...everybody clap your hands now" sweet jesus. Yes, its Funky, but still cheesy. Free and Lady Cab driver were ok. It ends well with International Lover .Yeah there is a bit of funk, but for the most part its monotonous. 3.5 stars
It feels like the lead track, 1999, has been played to death so I approached it expecting to be instantly bored. Good though, innit? It's almost impossible to believe it came out in 1982. This song, and the track that follows it, Little Red Corvette, are like pop music masterclasses, and both feel almost timeless. Then came Delirious, which sounds exactly like something that came out in 1982 - that chirpy little synth sound quickly became irritating and I had to skip the track. The rest of the album drifted into similar synth-funk territory that all sounds quite dated now, to me at least. I enjoyed listening to it though. I get the appeal of Prince - he was highly prolific, and seemingly consistently good, as well as being an extraordinary live performer who gave his fans 100%. I've just never really surrendered myself to it all - there are other Prince records I know I like more than this one (Parade springs immediately to mind), but I can see myself returning to this and maybe digging deeper into his back catalogue.
With this list I'm discovering that I find it hard to enjoy albums that focus on expressing the male singer's sexuality. Some examples I'm thinking of are the Tim Buckley's 'Greetings From L.A.' and "Sing 'O' The Times" by Prince. Don't think it is a bad thing, just something that I cannot connect to, and the same happens with this record. So, if my lack of my ability to resonate with it was already a problem, then it adds the fact that this album is super long. It last 1 hour and 10 minutes, and some songs surpass the 8 minute mark, which made it way harder to enjoy it. Thankfully, Prince's remarkable creativity and expressive performances are some traits that make me appreciate the album. Thus, I don't think it is a bad experience, but certainly not made for me. Maybe if it was shorter, I could enjoy it way more.
Turns out that Little Red Corvette didn’t have enough gas to get much past turn two. Coasted to a stop before turn three. Never saw the finish.
I think I liked this better than Purple Rain. Is that a hot take? The only problem is that the songs are too long, gets a bit boring sometimes.
Two Prince albums in as many months have made me realize that he is just not my thing. Respect to him as an artist, though. (If you haven't seen his guitar solo from George Harrison's Hall of Fame induction performance, I definitely recommend you look it up. It's equal parts miraculous and hilarious.) So . . .
Starts off on a heater but loses steam after the first 3 tracks. I’m a bigger fan of two other Prince albums at a minimum.
3/5 - I definitely prefer Purple Rain to 1999. The front half of this has the 3 hits, and I love it. I lose the thread in the back half, and the tracks are entirely too aimless and long. I think a 3 feels right, because I have no desire to listen to this front-to-back again.
