Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Prince is horny on main. Second half of the album is better IMO, minus 1999. Standout tracks: - 1999 5/5 - Little Red Corvette 4/5 - Something in the Water 5/5 - Free 4.5/5 - Lady Cab Driver 5/5 (for guitar solos only). - All the Critics Love U in New York 4/5
Funk
Enjoyed more than we would usually enjoy a Prince album. No idea why.
Very good
what a fucking awesome way to finish an album. didn’t stop listening throughout the whole listen!
Includes the iconic 1999 and Little Red Corvette. More upbeat/poppy than Purple Rain. Some of the screamy songs are not my favorite (2).
I will confess to the heresy of not being the biggest fan of His Royal Purpleness, but this album is excellent. Mush better than I thought with several HOF tracks. Not all to be sure, but really worth a listen.
Wow - easily party like it is 1999
Prince
I feel like Prince made this 69 minutes long on purpose, the dirty little fucker. There's a couple of b-sides on this as well otherwise it's easy 5 stars.
le princy princ ;))
Great first few tracks, but a little goes a long way on this album.
It's Prince, at his most 1999. I enjoyed it but not my favourite Prince album. 4/5
1999 is a fun listen, it has a couple all-timers on it. There are a few misses I just can't do, but overall it's a win.
My first album from Prince. I enjoyed it. It was funky, sexy and a bit weird at times but in a majestic way.
Nice listen. Prince is usually a good time. Some songs are more eventful than others, but there's some really enjoyable songs here.
lol good god Prince was a weird little dude
Classic dance album
Solid album. Still love the hits the most - Little Red Corvette, Delirious, 1999. Love the funk in DMSR, what a jam. Liked the ballad Free a lot too (hadn't really listened to that before). Not sure I can go full 5, so...
I thought amongst a bunch of music dudes there would be at least one rabid Prince fan. I am not one either, though have always kind of wanted to be. There are 5 or 6 really good songs on here, and I have no doubt Prince would have been an incredible live show. In the end though I have trouble connecting with this completely - musically and lyrically. I really want to hear more of his great guitar playing - feels like it’s so sparse or faded in the mix. Maybe it’s the recovering Catholic in me that would rather listen to Alice Cooper sing about necromancy than hear Prince moan sexual aviation puns. There’s something nice about being in your mid thirties, feeding your baby a bottle, listening to this freaky horned up dude sing about nonstop partying and fucking. Very happy for you Prince, but honestly sounds exhausting.
Partying like it's 1999 sounds so quaint now. A very 80s album, but I could vibe with it. The back half didn't do it as much for me. Highlights: 1999, little red corvette, delirious (a goofy line but super catchy)
Starts with a bang and maintains an incredible level of funk rock with the showmanship that you expect of Prince. The guy injects so much passion into his music, that you may ask yourself, “is there anybody around?” And “why do I feel so dirty, yet free?” The album slows a bit in the end, but remains a magical journey. Prince is first-class talent with his guitar work, singing/screaming, and writing chops.
Amazing funk, the sound of the 80S in one album. This is album sounds dirty and sexy. 1999, Delirious and D.M.S.R are great funk songs. I really enjoyed this album Favourite song: 1999 Least favourite: All good Album artwork: Cool cover

Prince! 4
Good
Not his best but still good
Never used to be a fan when growing up. However, I admit it must have been quite eclectic for its time. A generous 4 stars
Cmon listen to these beats and try not to dance
It's a good Prince album
1999 Little Red Corvette Delirious
Prince was truly ahead of his time with 1999, only mf horny enough to know how to party like it's 1999 in the year 1982 Prince leaned much more heavily into the electronic synth-dance style of his music which I don't like as much, only utilizing the guitar-ballad style of Purple Rain and When Doves Cry in the track Free, although this was 2 years before Purple Rain. Rest of the album is funky riffs, catchy lyrics, and enough innuendo that this listening to this album counts as credit for grade 8 sex ed. thank you prints for retuning the signature Prince wail to us in International Lover 🙏 🙏 I give it one star for each testicle that Prince had if he had as many testicles as Josuke Higashikata from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 8: Jojolion
I bet whoever came up with that riff in delirious ran and showed it to everyone because my god is it CRISP. Uh everyone is right, this album is way too long. But it really has some incredible highs on it. The first three tracks are so good.
Classic Prince including 1999, the song I want to be played at my funeral. 4*
oh prince! you're so forward! 😊
Most of Prince’s best songs are on here so yeah, it’s pretty good
Classic Prince! Huge hits, a few good grooves, and some random crap that still sounds funky. This one is an easy: 5⭐️
4-
Erótico, para hacer el amor
Maybe the smuttiest album on this list. But it's Prince and he can make smut work. Not quite as good as Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times but this is still pretty damn good.
Oh yea
3.5, rounded up
Hadn't listened to this in a long time. Holds up well.
Some hits some misses
Does an album all about sex count as a concept album? Only appropriate for a nice JW boy. Great dance music, and the long rhythms are just perfect, remind me of the stuff I listened to in my disco days. Some of these are excellent songs, ("Free", "Delirious") but I doubt I'll listen to this album as a whole again. 4/5
Iconic album. Unfortunately this one seemed to pigeon-hole Prince and only true fans were able to witness and feel his genius.
Such a great album. There’s only one Prince.
Exceptional
“I just don’t get Prince.” Son, you don’t get life.
Fun but not totally my style
So, some of my favorite songs but then some real deep cuts. I'm amazed this sold so well. It's a jam though
I don't usually get on so well with Prince. I always found his persona overly exalted. The music may have been great. It was only exceptionally accessible to me. So my expectations were rather low. The album has clearly surpassed it. I had completely forgotten the 1999 piece. And I also really liked the other tracks. A very good funky album. It was fun listening to it. 4/5
Better than expected though I enjoyed the tight songs of the first half from the longer jammier songs of the second half
Theatrical, sexual and never compromising. That's Prince, baby.
A bona fide classic. Front loaded with hits. I haven’t listened to this album in a long time but it is a really fun listen. The hits all bounce along with the type of funky, dance energy that you would expect of a hit 80s song. It’s just that this album is full of these songs. Even the songs that I never heard on the radio are infectious and could have been the best songs of many other bands.
I feel very sorry for myself that I didn't listen to any Prince growing up. This shit is funky, fresh, and the best vibe. without knowing much of Prince's discography - this sounds like a great jumping in point. as shown in the wiki detail as well, this is his album that helped him break through and set the stage for what Prince would become. This album is officially in rotation for me. Love it.
Prior to this listen, I only knew Prince for his songs "Purple Rain" and "1999". I didn't quite realize how much of a nasty little freak (in all the right ways) he was. The lyrics to "Let's Pretend We're Married" are absolutely wild! This album and it's songs are too long. That would normally be enough for me to take it down a star, but I had too much fun with this to go anything less than a 4.
Not my favourite album by Prince, but still great funky, inventive tunes
Prince merges soul, rock, r'nb and more into his own unique sound. There's a couple big peaks here and no real valleys. Good stuff.
First half bangers! Second half some misses but overall a classic
unbelievable levels of freak happening on this one
Great album. Lady Cab Driver stand out banger for me. Not his best album but elite still. Wish they did half stars on this because 4.5 for me
Prince is a genius. A lot of his songs have sentimental value to me, with little red corvette being my absolute favourite on the album and in my top 5 Prince songs. Would be surprised if Purple Rain doesn’t appear on the list. Might as well of just put Best Of Prince album. RIP legend!
Great artist, great album. This is probably from his best and most creative period of his amazing career but that's only my opinion. The man was a genius and a legend and his untimely passing has left a void in the music industry
Great album. Some of his best tracks on here; although there's a couple whose absence wouldn't be missed.
My delicate sensibilities! I forgot how salacious Prince can be.
solid album great musicianship
This is the second Prince album on my journey, after Sign 'O' the Times. I will say my enjoyment of 1999 is about the same as that album. This was the album that defined the "Minneapolis sound"—funk with an emphasis on synthesizers, loud guitars, drum machines, and faster rhythms. Suffice it to say, the sound is very much of its time. 1999 starts well with the title track leading into "Little Red Corvette" as a fine-rocking tune. Then afterward, tracks such as "Let's Pretend We're Married" and "D.M.S.R." come off as extended jam sessions, which I didn't mind. I'm certain the stretched-out duration of some of these tracks coupled with the dated sound can make the album feel its length on occasion though not to the same extent Sign 'O' the Times felt. Nevertheless, Prince wrote such wonderous sex jams with charisma and played nearly every instrument to great effect, making the experience remarkable. 1999 is another funky and sexual 80s album by the legend himself. It is certainly worth a listen.
This is Prince's fifth album and it's the one that launched him to major fame (and his first album with his band the Revolution). It's my third Prince album so far on here, adding to Sign o' the Times and Purple Rain. I really don't consider myself to be a huge Prince fan, and I say I don't really like the synth-pop thing, but then I listen to each of these albums and they are all pretty fun. It has so much more of a layered sound than a lot of other '80s synth-pop, so it's probably unfair to just call it that (and probably why I like it more). Overall, I enjoyed this better than Sign o' the Times, though it's a bit short of Purple Rain for me. This is a 70 minute double album, and the first side is really awesome, "1999" is an iconic opener, and then "Little Red Corvette" and " Delirious" are both strong follow-ups. Sides B and C are a little weaker in my opinion, though there are still some enjoyable songs on there. "Let's Pretend We're Married" has a catchy little chorus "ooh wee" thing going on for one. The D side picks things back up a bit though, with "Lady Cab Driver" and "International Lover" the standouts, but also "All the Critics Love U in New York" which is a favorite of mine. My biggest knock on this album is that the songs are all so long. Like 7 of the 10 songs are 7 minutes or longer, and I'm just not sure they really needed to be. In his defense, they're generally pretty dance-y songs, so if you're just bopping along to the vibe out on the dance floor it might work, but as a cohesive album I think it breaks up the flow a bit ("Automatic" is the biggest example for me, I generally don't hate the song, but it's like 9 minutes and just feels like it drags on). Overall a really strong and enjoyable album. I still don't know that I quite fully get Prince, and I'm tempted to call him more of a singles artist than an album artist, but this was solid overall, despite a few shortcomings. Favorite song: 1999 Other: Little Red Corvette, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married, Lady Cab Driver, All the Critics Love U in New York, International Lover 10/12/24
never quite understood the prince hype aside from his skills as a guitarist. now i do. wow that man is great. 9/10
Sometimes the instrumentals got a little boring but Prince has some amazing vocals and I like how horny his lyrics are 8/10
Always a good shout!
Starts with a banger, stays high. I like this much more than Purple Rain.
The album starts of strong and keeps the momentum going. The harmonies and vocals are as varied as the instrumentation, and even more so, the synthesizers. You can tell this is when synthesizers really started to develop as a form of instrumentation, and Prince used them a lot of this album to good effect. The hits definitely hit. But I also found myself enjoying the lesser-known songs. There is also a theme of... danger? That prevails the album even when the songs are upbeat and party vibes. I liked this juxtaposition. Overall- very good dance/party album with a lot of uniqueness. I can see how it established Prince as a powerhouse
I loved this album. Every song felt like I couldn't turn my attention away from it, it made me want to dance and groove the whole time listening to it. Some songs did feel like they went on longer than they should have, but it never felt like it was dragging for so long that it was annoying. It was an almost perfect album, 9/10.
It's a bit odd for me, for every song I'm indifferent on, there's a song I love too. I hate 1999 so much though that it's mere inclusion brings it down a star for me.
Prince is the musicians musician, the man could do it all. He really set the scene for 80s music.
A nice listen; grooves all in the right places.
Ein Album aus der Zeit als Prince noch so hiess und einfach Superplatten machte.
Big sexy synths 80s style. This album is horny even for prince. Personally I think prince is a musical genius but he isn't for everyone. Not his best though 8/10
It was quite good! I'll check it out again later!

I love prince
This album starts out HOT. 1999 is once of Prince's best songs, and then he follows it up with Little Red Corvette and Delirious. The rest of the album isn't quite as good, but it is really consistent. Great 80s synthpop by one of the masters 4/5
Definitely a classic and deserves Top 1001 status. Talk about firepower right out of the gates! The album starts with the intro title song which is still in heavy radio rotation 40 yrs later, followed by massive hit "Little Red Corvette", which is followed by fan favorite "Delirious". The 8 minute "DMSR" (Dance Music Sex Romance) is a sing-along dancefloor filler with a killer beat and memorable lyrics. The album is cohesive and sounds fresher than the 1982 release date would indicate. It's a double album so it's a lot of music and some long songs are included. Other standouts and fan faves include "Let's Pretend We're Married", "Lady Cab Driver" & slow jam "International Lover". "Something in the Water" was unnecessary and "Automatic" is a bit redundant at 9.5 minutes, but those are the only flaws. Top 1001 deservedly, it has hits, it's still popular, it's influential, it broke him as a bonafide star & everyone knows the cover!
First few tracks are absolute bangers. Could be a 10/10 but all the tracks are just way longer than they should be. And the last few just don't hit the same. Feels like realizing what sex really is Strong 8 to a light 9 Art: 6/10 You had work from 6-2, then class, then came home and chilled
All great quality stuff, the sophistication and creativity above and beyond. Would be 5 star but not a sound that does it for me.
The Purple Rain one. Musical Genius. I actually had this album in my hands today looking through what’s left of my albums. First 3 songs take one back and still forward. Miss this guy.
Sex music but its actually good
I can only imagine when this album was released. In the same way that we are seeing an electronic dance pop renaissance in 2024, Prince no doubt dropped this album in 1982 like a breath of fresh, freaky air in the funk genre. This album is so very forward-thinking; it no doubt served as a blueprint for many artists in the 80s seeking a funky dancey sound, and yet it still sounds so unique and incomparable to anything else. While this was not Prince's first great work, it was arguably his first great work where he pushes the creative envelope so much, jumps into uncharted music territory, and sticks the landing. This album would turn out to be a game changer for him as he moved forward in his career and continued to take this approach.
Tremendous! First three songs are true bangers!! Rest of album is funky and fun
I think I need a cigarette and an adult after this... ... although I think I liked it o_o 9/10 Would I listen again? Only if he buys me a drink first!
I'm not the biggest Prince fan but this album is probably the one I return to the most. Lots of really fun funky stuff here that is super impressively forward-thinking.
went into a fugue state and now my dick is purple??
Sexy
Great album full of classics.
fabulous
I heard maybe 20 different artists and albums in this one project. Prince is so influential, and his sound, vocals, and lyrical freedom make this a great soundscape. Many relistenable songs, and a great time as well.
Pretty good stuff
The first half is great, it kinda spills into just horny drum machine love making after a while but it's Prince so he pulls it off (!).
1999 lrc
Comes out gun slinging with the start of this album! The rest is also great! 3.8
This album is definitely an inconsistent one, but beautiful.
A classic.
What an album. Did this guy ever have any doubts? Doubt it. It's all sexuap energy and cool. I'll echo some other reviews, some of these songs were way too long. But man, Prince and his band kill it.
Another artist leaving my waiting list today! Not to lie, I heard Purple Rain a few years ago and I remember being ecstatic and euphoric with this record. For this reason, I already knew that Prince was this eccentric, extravagant and powerful artist. So I went to listen to 1999 with great expectations and was honored with the satisfaction of all of them. This is probably the sexiest album I've ever heard in my life (it competes very well with Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On), it even gets pornographic at times. The sound quality is impeccable and, once again, Prince's vocals left me entranced and breathless. I'm not a person who likes to dance, but there's no way I can sit still and listen to this. The album suffers a little from the excessive length of the tracks. I think some of the 7 minute songs could be more compact. Apart from that, the album is perfect and was a pleasant surprise!
Like all Prince albums this album has good bits, bad bits and is also very long. I enjoyed the hits on this one so it gets 4.
Prince is one of my favorite artists so I have a bias towards his music. This is an uneven album, but I love many of the songs on it. Some wonderful classic Prince moments. "Automatic" and "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)" are tracks that were not hits but are maybe my favorites. D.M.S.R. is an all time club standard.
Some awesome songs on this album - but also a few that I remember fast forwarding on my cassette player back in the day.
I found it interesting this was such a synth driven album. Few guitars. You can see the direction coming with The Revolution and it sure is tight and funky. Prince has a way of doing amazing things with simple chords and syncopation. Some of this sounds dated but hard not to appreciate the fundamentals.
Interestingly, this album was released in 1982 - just like the album immediately preceding - Sulk by The Associates. Both albums sound like they came from 1982, but 1999 is welcome in the future, and Sulk is not...at some point I will sit down and think about why.
Bops
Good album with a couple of great songs included
Honestly, Prince albums are pretty much solid 5s for me as a general rule. The front half of this album (the only one from his... Ahem... Purple period I don't own) is an easy 5. The back end is weirder and more uncomfortable and I don't know yet. But I feel like I would grow to love it.
Prince rocks. Lots of bops on here.
Prince is one of the greatest all-around musical talents pop music has ever seen. I'd never gone past the voluminous hit singles on this album, and while some tracks seemed to drag on longer than necessary, they routinely paid off in the end. As a very different aside, I, for one, didn't realize how raunchy Prince could get. I did not have Prince singing, "I sincerely want to fu€k the taste out of your mouth" on my lyrical bingo card. You have to really enjoy the more 80s synth elements of Prince to appreciate the lengthy effort of the entire album, but it's an experience well worth having.
Quite interesting. Nothing I'd actively put on so nice that I got to listen to it. .
Oh yeah, there’s a reason this was a classic. I remember now.
Groovy baby
This is a great album. Not as strong as Purple Rain but a preview of what is to come for sure. The first three are legendary and got all the airtime, but my favorite track was always track 4, “Let’s pretend we’re married.”. Could have been the roller rink , my age at the time, or both.
You can definitely hear the seeds that would eventually become peak Purple Rain. But after the first three tracks which were bangers then and still hold bang status today, the rest of this one is just not quite as strong. Still rounding up to a 4 on innovation and staying power alone. 3.75/4.
Could stand some trimming around the edges, but holy hell, what a funky sexy good time. Points the way to Prince’s musical supremacy.
Good album I’ve already heard most of them and I like it
Purple Rain is still my favorite of the Prince albums, but this one is definitely infectious, and Prince will always have an incredible voice.
01) 1999 - 10,0 02) Little Red Corvette - 10,0 03) Delirious - 8,5 04) Let's Pretend We're Married - 8,0 05) D.M.S.R. - 8,5 06) Automatic - 7,5 07) Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) - 8,0 08) Free - 8,5 09) Lady Cab Driver - 7,5 10) All The Critics Love U In New York - 8,5 11) International Lover - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,45 (85/100) Current ranking: 49/217 I can't decide whether "1999" or "Little Red Corvette" is better. The rest of the album is a little weaker than these two songs, which is to be expected, but still very good. Typical funky, sexy Prince.
Classic, diverse maybe a little long
Fun pop record. Way dirtier than I thought it would be, but I have never really listened to Prince. Great vocals, synth, percussion. All around super solid.
Favorite Tracks: 1999 Little Red Corvette D.M.S.R.
Prince got a little freaky with this one
funky synths. way more explicit than anticipated (but not surprising)
This was an again very funky record and as others said some songs are a little too long. This one has no reason to be a double lp. Other than that a really solid album. Not at the leve of Purple Rain
Good stuff
Prince’s production is incredible
Long songs, but decent songs. I enjoyed them. 7/10
Notable tracks: 1999, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, D.M.S.R., Automatic, All The Critics Love U In New York, International Lover
Day 2 - June 3rd, 2024 Prince straight up jorkin it in his peanits (album was fire, highlights were Something in the Water and Lady Cab Driver)
I've always respected Prince, and thus tried repeatedly to connect with his music. I've failed many times. But listening for this list, he's 2 for 3. Sign o' the Times was not my favorite listen, but I'm wondering if I should go back and try again because this and Purple Rain are undeniably good. Maybe there's a proper order to listen to his albums in order to "get it"? I'm not ready to announce my conversion, but I feel more qualified to compliment someone on their Purple Rain t-shirt now. Part of it is that I'm too white to be this funky, but also because of the 80s-ness of it all. That said, he was clearly an incredible guitar player and a fuckin weirdo, but in a much less icky way than MJ was, which is saying something because these lyrics don't leave much to the imagination. Anyway, this is great. Even beyond the hits. Little Red Corvette has always been a favorite of mine. I'm not sure if Around the World In A Day is on this list, but that has my second favorite Prince song: Raspberry Beret.
He understood and performed music so well that he super rested the 80’s sound fonts so frequently used in this amazing album. Strong 4/5
Solid album.
This is a great album. It has a lot of great hits on it (Little Red Corvette is my fav). Sexy jams are fun and exciting, and Prince might be the best at it. As a lady it is nice to hear a singer talk about making their partner happy in a way that actually feels like the person knows what they are talking about. He has the swagger to back up what he is laying down, you know what I mean ladies. I wish Prince got my credit and love for his deeper stuff like 1999, Free and All the Critics Love U. Yes there is sex in all of it, but its beyond that, its talking about critical issues (nuclear war, sexuality, insecurity, etc) in a way that is not been done.
The songs are long cuz they are dancing grooves. Or you can fuck to them. You can dance if you want.
“Don't you just love Prince?” Yes, yes I do. I’ve never listened to this whole album before. Love the hits on it, and the others are fun and groovy too, though they take kind of a weird turn and go on a bit too long without any obvious purpose for being so long - feels like a little bit of editing could’ve been done. Regardless, he has a way of making his music sound very effortless and cool and sexy. I enjoyed this a lot. And I love how encouraging he is about letting your freak flag fly. RIP you sexy mother fucker.
I didn't think this would be anything but a 5, and if I could give 1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious individual ratings they would be off the chart.. but then.. things took a turn. I am not saying the songs are bad .. but there are very few reasons in my mind to have songs that approach the 10 minute mark.. and there are three on this album.. and two in a row! The #1 reason to NOT have a 10 minute song (in my opinion, of course, which is the point of a review) is to refrain from repeating the same lyric over and over 100 times. D.M.S.R and Automatic do just that. They start so good but could have easily been 5-6 minute songs. I appreciate this album for its content but I can't say that I will be listening to the entire album on repeat again soon.
Wall to wall bops
Iconic album- Prince in all his pomp. No-one did it quite the same so he gets away with outrageous swagger and corny lyrics. He really was in a class of his own.
A funky and fun party and ahead of its time. Prince poured a lot into this album
I love Prince's stuff! He's a musical genius and in the day he was a favorite. I didn't own this album though. I'm not as enamored of it as earlier ones though. It's his signature sound, but a bit monotonous. It's a precurser to house music though, long repetitive songs that get people dancing. Prince's influence goes on and on. Maybe 4 stars instead of 5?
Prince is Ƭ̵̬̊. , even its weaker songs are saved by how hilariously raunchy they are
The Album formerly known as "A banger"
As talented and entertaining Prince is, his music is not always the most interesting. Obviously there a few mega hits like 1999 and Little Red Corvette that make this album worth a listen, but a number of songs could be cut too. 3.5/5 but rounding this one up.
If i say dirty mind is better will i be stoned in the town square
another album that kicks off with the title track, this one follows that up with Little Red Corvette and other bangers like DMSR & Automatic though (I'm looking at you Al Green). solid 4
I feel like I just had sex with Prince.
Damn, first two tracks are killer. Delirious is catchy too in a goofy way. I can’t handle the drums in Let’s Pretend to be Married.
I haven’t really liked the other Prince albums I’ve listened to thus far, but I can’t deny how fun this album is. A very strong 4…just kinda lost me on the last few songs and how LONG many of them are.
80s Prince through and through. Enjoyed this one but not aching to get back to it. Four stars.
Could be his best of
Amazing
Loves: 1999 Little Red Corvette Delirious D.M.S.R Automatic All the Critics Love you in New York Notes: I’m going into this having listened to a handful of popular Prince songs a lot and some deeper cuts a few times. Little Red Corvette is one of my all time favorite songs. I like “1999” (song), but it is at the bottom of the Prince songs I know well.
So different from Purple Rain. So much synth and so little guitar. I thought that was going to influence things badly for me, but once again Prince shows that his particular brand of pop is something I actually like. Felt a few little nods to electro throughout this one which also rocked.
So So Good. Starts strong and fast with 1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious. 5 stars for the start. The rest of the album is good, off pace, but artistic. 3 stars because of the lag for me. Average of 4 stars.
Let's Pretend We're Married goes hard. So does D.M.S.R. So does Little Red Corvette. So does Delirious. This was my first Prince album and I really liked it. Almost all of the songs were jams, with a few slower songs like International Lover to mix it up. You can feel his charisma coming through in all the songs. Listening to him sing is like listening to Jeff Goldblum talk. It feels like he's trying to fuck the song as he's singing it. I look forward to hearing more Prince 8/10.
I knew Prince was a sex symbol in his heyday, but this album was auditory imtercourse. Really good though. 3.5/5
Solid, close to a 5 for me
Long grooves and very sexual. Prefer purple rain but Prince is still at a peak.
Good. 80s synth all over the place. I've heard the hypersexual stuff was a put on - gets to be a bit much. Undeniable genius and all but this one didn't excite me too much. 4 for the prince airlines and lady cab driver, and hippy call outs.
Fun, funky, keyboard driven and fancy!!!
pretty damn good
This is such a great album. Starts and ends strong.
Best song: little red Corvette Vibes: funk Themes: end of the world, robots, sluts
For many, mention of the year in question triggers a mental playing of this album's title track, so that counts for something. The music throughout is pretty good though, showcasing Prince's astounding versatility across multiple genres. Not sure it all stands up 40+ years on. Also, I don't need constant reminders that he likes (liked) to shag. The 4 is 3.5 rounded-up.
Title track is my favourite Prince song, but there also some filler tracks. Overall this has lasted time well
Prince brings it. Good album, and still very listenable.
I like Prince a lot, and this is a really solid album. The main reason it's not getting 5 stars from me is that some of the songs really meander for way longer than they should. The musicality and production are top notch throughout, but this album just loses me at some points. It's not bad by any means, though. My favorite songs are probably "Little Red Corvette" and "Free" but they all have high points.
I'm not as versed in Prince as I would like, so i was nervous about this one. I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised. While I don't crave that synth sound so synonymous with the 80's, I did appreciate the era-defining quality and influence of it. If I'm in the mood, I could find myself coming back to this.
1999 - Mix is not my favorite, feels a bit too close and quiet. Very groovy, funky guitar riffs add a lot. Overall very solid opening track. Little Red Corvette - I think this melody is much more catchy
Probably one of the best party albums of the 80s. Not really where I'm at now, and fails to connect, but amazingly produced and pinnacle of the style.
Not my favorite Prince record, but still lovely. Hoping for Aroubd The World In A Day.
Loved the album
This is a classic! Need to be in the mood for this album
Amazing album. Prince was a musical genius
Just listened and am now pregnant.
great album, i just had sex with prince, i love the 80's
Good! Some filler!

A good album from Prince. I really liked 1999 and Little Red Corvette. The rest of the album was good as well, there were no songs I disliked.
Phenomenal album. Would be a 5 without “Something in the Water”. Funky, poppy, pornographic shit. Extremely infectious and catchy. “Lady Cab Driver” goes crazy!!!
Enjoyed this, especially Little Red Corvette
Favourite song - 1999
Genius. 1999 really brought his funky genius to the public.
I'm biased but I just can't give this a 3.
Somehow I’d never listened to a Prince record all the way through. This is so much fun - full of funk and sex.
There are several elements of this that make prudish or biased parts of me want to say, “no thank you,” but the musicianship and presentation of this is so well done, I can't really fault it. Well done, Prince.
i love prince i would do anything for him
Coool
Pop perfection. Prince knew what he was doing. DMSR is a top ten pop song for me.
Somehow not one of my favorite Prince albums. I think 1999 and Little Red Corvette have been too played out and may have caused me to disconnect with this album.
fun album, very 80s. 4/5
Spray Prince with a spray bottle
I really enjoyed the r and b crossover hit that paved the way for mjs monster success
7*
Pas mal !!
Prince is one of those once-in-a-lifetime acts who spews music out, and quite a lot of it is good. It defines "the music of Prince" perfectly. There are some production choices in this that now sound amateurish and silly, but overall there's not Princier Prince album around.
4 Sterne weil Prince. Ansonsten muss ich es nochmal in Ruhe hören
iconic
An icon. Legend. Prince of pop. But every song could have been ~2 mins shorter.
The baby was a bit much
Good album. Definitely some tracks on here that I was not as familiar with. Remember finding a good copy of this used at a thrift store in college.
A classic.
could i write poetry to this? y
It's great...but not "Purple Rain" great.
Bastante parecidas todas pero guay
Prince is one of the few artists that come to mind as being so authentically themselves that within the first couple notes you know exactly who it is. This is probably my second favorite Prince album, only behind Purple Rain. Standout Tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious
Yes.
Prince was a consummate showman. How can you go wrong?
I think Prince usually puts together albums that have some misses. This is one of the albums I own and I know it front to back. I remember my brother was really into Prince when he was like 7 or 8--this was in the 80s when there were only a few (mostly) filthy albums. Weird. Anyway, it's good!
I can't believe I never realized that this album did not actually come out in 1999. Title track is of course, great. "Little Red Corvette" is also a really good song. These songs...are all SO LONG. I feel like I'm missing something. It does give the feeling of being at a live show and watching the band ease there way in and out of sections. Lots of these songs either have really long outros or just keep repeating the hook between long verses, or both. Still, each songs creates its own atmosphere with a variety of production elements. "D.S.M.R.," groovy, a very steady beat. "Something in th Water" is a really cool song; it's eerie and a lil sad, however, there's a quirky outer-space-sounding synth melody that is quite distracting. "All the Critics" and "International Lover" are also pretty good.
I think this is the first prince I’ve listened to outside of Purple Rain (the song). Gotta say, it’s pretty good. Good singing, a fascinating mix of instrumentals. It’s incredible to know that he did everything himself. A very talented guy. And a very horny guy too. Not my usual listening, but maybe worth listening to more
Album 317 of 1001 Prince - 1999 Rating : 4.5 / 5 This was a double album but, as far as hits, it was all about Disc 1 Side 1. Everything after that, while not as 'hit' worthy, sure provides some awesome background music. This album, a scruple-lacking stunning, blond older Nashville woman and a couple of shots of Crown Royal combined for some real turning of age stuff for an adventurous 17 year old small town high school senior on a weekly basis over 2 or 3 months...but I digress. Really good album. Left us wanting more and he soon delivered with Purple Rain.
Groovy album but Prince was a little sicko
Classic
Strong start, kinda started to lose me towards the end?
Prince is always jamming.
Loved most of it. Some of the techno was a little much.
Very good album. Driving beat and fun contrast and real and electronic instrumental. Prince knows how to have fun and write.
4/5. Better than the last one he did.
Firstly, Prince rules. Secondly, the synths and drum sounds on this album are the most 80's things I can feasibly imagine. Forever a king. 4.5/5
Opens strong. First three songs are 5+. Levels off after that to a solid 4 at best.
Very good album. Better than Sign O’ The Times, not as good as Purple Rain - but close.
prince <33
1982 1999 2024 2057 Sit down, very good. 4
It's Prince. Need I say more?
Had fun listening and dancing to this album.
# Playlist track - 1999 # Notes - Album starts out pretty fun. - "Something in the water" is atrocious and then it slides from there.
this record has a lot of Very Long Songs on it
Great, classic album!!! Haven’t actually listened to this album in its entirety.
Really grew on me after a few listens. 1999 is not my favorite prince track, maybe because it reminds me of 7th grade when it was overplayed (y2k, etc). The back end of the album rips, and is sufficiently weird to merit multiple listens with prince’s high pitch squeals and bizarre lyrics
Somehow I had never heard this album, although of course I knew 1999 and Little Red Corvette. This has a combination of sounds that range from classic Prince that I remembered from his early TV appearances to songs that I would have never guessed were him. This was the first album with the Revolution, including many co-lead and backing vocals. I was great going back to the origins of his influential sound. I can only imagine how much fun these concerts were.
Real good. This is what I'm looking for. Unique and funky. 4.2
appreciated the funkiness and the reminder of Prince's unabashed showmanship. the use of synth, etc was groundbreaking at the time but feels played out for me at this point. the videos are kind of amazing time capsules, lol
1999- I'm really enjoying this song. The lyrics and vocals are great. The music behind it is great with a solid beat. I don't know how to talk music but I really like this track. I don't think it would make my liked list so 8/10 Little Red Corvette- Might be early to say (but I did listen once through at work) but I think this is the album peak for me. Love everything about this song, it gets on the liked list and is a certified banger 9/10 Delirious- Good beat and lyrics, the very tenor synth is a bit much for me. Overall I like the track but listening too loud hurts my ears, just misses making the liked list with that 8/10 Let's Pretend We're Married- Oh man I really dig this track, great vibe and fun lyrics. Loving the synth on this track, oh and the break down and rebuild *chefs kiss*, makes the list 8.5/10 (Didn't love the end, that might wind up in Rotational real quick) D.M.S.R.- This song isn't holding me very strongly, the beat is decent but doesn't hit me very strong. 6/10 Automatic- Fine enough love song, easy listening. No complaints but not a very strong entry either 6/10 Something in The Water (Does Not Compute)- Don't love this one as much. Not a big fan of the more industrial influence here (I think industrial is the right term anyway). Would skip if not listening to the whole album 4/10 Free- Solid easy listening song with solid lyrics doesn't make my liked list but does get a solid 6.5/10 Lady Cab Driver- Ooooh funky bass line Lyrics didn't grab me but man that bass line is funky. Will probably end up in Rotational 7.5/10 dang why is this song over 8 minutes All The Critics Love U In New York- another fine track for me, head bopper for sure 7/10 International Lover- Another perfectly fine love song, easy listening and a solid 7/10 Averaging all of my song scores across the album comes back with 7.1/10 rounding up which I will give the album. Overall it's a really solid listen and I can hear it's influence on music as a whole. The songs I like on this record I like a lot and the songs that are ok are ok for me 5/10 is average in my mind for this scale with songs meaning an average album is probably a 5/10 or so making this album 2 points above average in the territory I would call "Absolute Bop" material. Absolute Bops are things that have you boppin your head or tappin your foot pretty regularly. There are a couple songs that are *Certified Bangers* but overall I think the album falls short of that categorization for me.
Albums with a heavy amount of drum machine are never going to be 100% my jam, but I like this one a lot even if I'm not at the full on "love it" that a lot of other people are.
Loved it. I had forgotten how many of those songs I liked.
Fun and goofier than I expected. I knew Prince was a horny little fella, but I didn't expect this much.
A great prince album.
Is this review public?
Was previously familiar. Had not listened in a long time though. Prince was great!!!
Classic Prince. I put it right under Purple Rain.
Prince , the genius, indisputably has to be on any top 1000 list. Who else did *everything* - composed, played very instrument, saucy lyrics and voice, grooving performances and , the Mineapolis sound, song writer of many of our most memorable songs )(Sinead), and what a performer - we've all seem that stage show where all the guitar greats are there and he does his solo and its call clear. What artistry. now, this album... (one of 8 Prince albums which defined if not dominated 80s music). My guess is he has 4-5 albums in this list. Would I consider this one essential in my collection, no...but I am sure I'd say yes to some others. I just don't know which.
Little Red Corvette - just about my favourite Prince track. To open an album with 1999 & Little Red Corvette is just showing off. So talented. And this is a ripper of a listen.
I was a teenager in the 80s, and I must confess I didn't initially get Prince. I was aware of the singles from this album when they were released, but I didn’t have the album, and I didn’t really understand what the fuss was. A schoolmate, Bassel, was a fan and constantly tried to convince me of Prince’s genius, but it took a while. Sorry Bassel, I got there eventually. Then, in about 1988, the penny finally dropped and I got it. Over the next couple of years, I obsessively hunted down the whole Prince back catalogue. I played his music constantly, and I still do. I saw him at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1992, and he tore it up live. Prince’s imperial phase of the 1980s is a rich treasure trove of pleasures, and this is the album where he really started sounding like Prince. It is his first album with The Revolution (instead of multi-tracking everything himself in the studio). It was his first top ten album, with his first top ten singles. It’s the beginning of his explicit mix of rock and hard funk, and clearly aimed at a cross-over crowd. The videos from this album were some of the first by black artists to get major play on MTV. The tunes have great pop hooks, but the sound is often leaning towards an experimental electro-funk, and the album versions typically stretch out each song to the length of a dance single (although there were much shorter 7" edits). His use of drum machines is distinctive and revolutionary, and the contributions of the Revolution (especially Wendy and Lisa) in the vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements broaden his musical palate. Big fan of their work. The run of songs that kick off the record are amazing; 1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious make up one of the most perfect sides of an album ever. Some of the material at the back end of the album maybe not quite as stellar, but I still find fun, funky and interesting. Is this my favourite Prince album? No, not quite. But it is the album where he first really finds his strength and true voice, ironically by leading a band instead of doing everything himself. 4 stars.
This is like peak '80s music in my mind. This was fun but not something I'd listen to on my own.
If you do not know much about Prince and want to start exploring his catalog, chances are that your point of entry will be "1999" or "Purple Rain." The popularity of these albums is well-earned since they comprise Prince's musical DNA fantastically: larger-than-life pop songs with tons of sexual references (some of them pretty obvious) over a funky, infectious bass line. As the visionary that he was, Price shared with us his version of the "Y2K" dystopia so many years ahead. I had never heard sci-fi stories about digital dependence/disaster sung in a voice as claustrophobic as horny. A total must-listen.
This album is great, I argue it would be fantastic if the album would be trimmed down to 55-60 minutes. Some songs meander a bit too long without really going somewhere. But the bulk of this album however is really good! Powerful stuff. Standouts: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, Automatic, Free, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover 8 out of 10
Prince puts the fun in funk, baby. Not every song is a banger and sometimes he veers into the corny side of horny, but this is a blast to listen to.
While I don't like this album as much as Purple Rain, it's still super fun. Some of the songs were overly long, but overall I dug it.
Was ready not to like this, but actually was quite good. I like this way more than Purple Rain. 3.75/5
this has always been one of my lesser favorites of Prince’s peak era (which is basically the whole of the 80s but likely stops with Sign o’ the Times). The songs here largely feel like 12-inch remix versions of the original tracks, and I’d rather here those shorter takes. But it’s still classic Prince and has some incredible work. The musicianship is insane and his songwriting only continues to impress with time. Close to an A-range, but I’ll stick with B+
He was the goat in a lot of ways. Most of his albums have that nostalgic feeling to them.
Genius
Geggjuð plata 19999, little red corvette, Delirious og lets pretend were married 10/10
Gífurlega mikilvæg plata. Kom Prince á kortið. Án hennar hefðum við kannski aldrei fengið stóru plöturnar. Maður sér strax hvað hann er að gera. Kominn með eigið sound og er svona að finishera heildarpakkann. Svo er það bara oh no, let's go! Fyrstu þrjú lögin eru auðvitað það sem gerir plötuna stóra. Þrír risastórir singlar sem koma honum hátt á top 200 poplistanum í u$a. Finnst næstu lög plötunnar mjög experimental, löng og aðeins of hrá. Flott heildarverk samt sem áður miðað við hvað þetta er early hjá honum.
Prince er alltaf skemmtilegur. Litla rauð corvettan er eitt uppáhaldslagið mitt með honum. Platan í heild góð og engin leiðinleg lög.
Never have ever sat down and listened to Price, but am well aware of him and have watched Purple Rain. Really catchy/interesting/original stuff in there. Some song are definitely too long for me, but I can imagine the goodness just oozing out of him in the studio and they had to keep going. The Little Red Corvette melody will be in my head for days. I guess I'm a Prince fan now.
It’s Prince, what’s not to love. Solid album. Musically diverse, funky, sexy, cool. 4 stars
If he stopped wanking for a minute and concentrated on the music he could have trimmed a good 20 minutes off this album.
why does everybody have a bomb?
The man was a genius. 1999 transported me back to 1982 with those funky beats!
Extra points for being shockingly apocalyptic
Prince is fantastic and I love his music. Such a prolific artist, consummate entertainer, and highly accomplished on a ridiculous number of musical instruments. At times, it gets a little too synth-heavy for my tastes, and sometimes sounds a little gimmicky, too, but overall it's a fun album.
Interesting
Awesome
ahhh, the refreshing sound of Prince after a dry spell of shitty albums. This I can get into. Plenty of songs on here I've never heard before along with some super hits. Good stuff.
Un clásico
Listed Before? Yes Coincidence that we got 1989 followed by 1999? I think not. For me, the end of 1999 was defined by the Y2K "crisis" and the title track of this album. I remember this song was unavoidable. And honestly its not such a terrible thing; this song jams with plenty of 80s cheese. Mixing on Little Red Corvette is doo doo, but the song is among my favorite that Prince has put out. Solid structure with nice layering and an actual guitar solo. Baby sound at the end of Delirious threw me. I've heard it in the TNGHT song Buggin'. Let's Pretend We're Married finds Prince at his horniest. D.M.S.R. is a funky jam. Feels a lot like some of the jams that I have seen Umphreys play on Triple Wide with the heavy synth and splashy guitar. Standout track. Something in The Water is really cool. Love the warbling synth line that the song is based around. Sounds like some modern day avant electronic works, but more poppy. Lady Cab Driver jams pretty hard. Especially through the mid-section where guitar, bass, and drums all have meaty sections. This is shaping to be one of the better Prince albums I've listened to. All The Critics keeps things speeding along. Super funky dance track. Album closes on a slower R&B-ish song. Not out of place relative to the rest of the album but certainly takes some of the wind out of the sales following all the funky energy that was found elsewhere. This is a top two Prince album for me and has some really strong tracks interspersed. I feel like the production was needlessly dusty at times, but otherwise this is well-sequenced and enjoyable. I'm a strong 4 / 5 here. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added to Playlists: - D.M.S.R. (Driving) - All the Critics Love You in New York (Sunny-vibes)
Besides Prince's super loud screaming, the music's awesome
Cool
Brings me back to my college days… I remember the album well. There are some classic, gems on this, that you will all recognize. There’s some other good stuff on the album, but you’ll remember why the hits are the hits
So, back in 2013, I saw Prince live. 1000 person venue. Incredible time... but beside that point, a comment when I left was "I think there are 1000 people who are now pregnant -- from eye contact alone, myself included" and as an adult male who very much does not have a uterus, that seemed like a funny thing to say. Friends laughed. But like, listen to 1999. Tell me Prince didn't just bang you. It's an absolute masterpiece. Starts with the hits and then descends into hedonism.
Is famous person said. There is no two thoughts
Prince's music to me is so hit and miss. I LOVE some songs, and can't bear to listen to others.
I have encountered the same problem with "1999" that I find with most of Prince's music. It's just...a lot. Like very long songs that seem to go past their expiration date 2-3 minutes too late. I like this music! I really do! But I don't want to hear an outro that goes on and on. So I can't give this album 5 stars for that reason only. Listening to Prince's music is like when you tell your mom that you like pumpkin pie. From that moment on, you will be eating pumpkin pie or anything else pumpkin related when you visit her house. Why? BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT. I like Prince's music, but I don't need (waves hand around) additional time for him to get his point across. You like the song "Automatic?" Well, how about you get to hear the song for nine-and-a-half minutes? You think "Let's Pretend that We Are Married" is a great song, well then how about you pretend you are married to the song and make a lifetime commitment to the 7-minute run-time? An artist like Prince does not have to be brief, but a little editing can't hurt this album and would not have hurt this album. Great album. I love so much of what is on here. I can't re-visit it too often without the radio edits though.
tremendo
Prince is a certified cool dude. I've never really given his work the time of day because I generally listen to other genres but I can't really think of a reason to not like most of this album. Its groovey it's funky, it's sexy. He uses his vocal range to push songs into entirely new areas from the one previous. The 80s music vibe doesn't date the music, just puts it into context. Can't say the whole thing was my cup of tea but it's hard to deny talent on songs like "dsmr", "lady cab dirver" and "international lover".
Jaaa, prince! Would buy!
Mostly great: funky riffs, sexy lyrics, futuristic themes, and just toe-tappingly fun music Docked 1 point because some tracks go on too long
Enjoyed most songs but it definitely was carried by 1999
4.5
Now this is the Prince I thought I knew. There's definitely a reason I didn't come across many of these songs when I was younger, Prince is maybe at his freakiest here. The album starts off with a bang, with the first handful of tracks being locked down as pop staples. Throw in a few other hits along the way and you've got what feels to be an essential album for pop fans. Throw in a cool album cover and I'm sold. Highlight: 1999 Lowlight: Free Surprise Hit: Lady Cab Driver
Great album
