Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Never a fan of Prince when I was young but have come to appreciate him as an excellent songwriter, virtuosic guitarist and general musical maverick. Let's be honest, at 70 mins, this is a bit long. I'm not sure I need to hear 7, 8 or 9 minute Prince songs but here we are. That said, it's decent, I certainly don't mind it, but I'm not sure I'd purposefully revisit. For me he;s best when he leans into the funk which is does heavily in my fave track: D.S.M.R.

2. Little Red Corvette - заедающая. 3. 7. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) - у Принса интересные мелодии. 10. All the Critics Love U in New York - какой же плавный переход от предыдущей песни, очень satisfying. Ей богу, it did something to me.

3/5 stars (5.5/10) Favourite song: 1999 Least favourite: Automatic

Definitely not his best. Just an ok album...

some very strange sounds every now and then on this album

this man too horny

Not my thing

I do not the music of the artist formerly known as Prince will ever gel with me. I don’t know what it is about it but it cannot get my attention, and I do not enjoy it. I won’t deny that it’s competently made, or that the artist is a talented person, but I just don’t get it.

One of the most front-loaded and horny albums I’ve ever listened to. Side A is GREAT genuinely, 1999 and Little Red Corvette are massive hits but unfortunately this side also ends with a song that legitimately sounds like a high production Wesley Willis song. Go and listen to Delirious and then Rock n Roll McDonalds, trust me. I am disappointed in the rest of the album, Sides B and C left me nonplussed outside of how randy this was. Side D was good and makes me wish that the middle part of the album was removed because this would have been a tight album in that case. Even if that happened, the album would still end with Prince stroking his shit on Seduction 747 for the last track. Seriously man, I swear I just listened to a guy bust a nut on record. Highlights: 1999, Little Red Corvette

The *sound* of this record is unlike anything else that came before, with its blend of synthesizers, trebly guitars and Prince's trusty Linn drum machine; the whole thing still sounds as fresh as the day it was released. Song-wise it's a mixed bag, with the cataclysmic title track and the blush-inducing "Let's Pretend We're Married" as the high points. Everything else would serve perfectly fine as party music but doesn't have the same spark as Prince's best work.

Dancey, sexy, and funky for the most part. Found myself dancing around the house but getting distracted. Not good enough to hold my attention, radical for early 80s. Favorite track was DSMR. 6/10.

That was coo.

Like the other Prince albums in this collection, I've only heard the singles from "1999", and not even the full versions of those tracks it turns out--most of the radio/video versions of his singles are about half the length of the versions on the album. It's a classic Prince album, of course, but I wonder if it might have been even better if the same editorial approach had been taken to all of the tracks? Plus maybe a few more instruments than just drum machine, synth and guitar, or just a bit more variety aside from his electro-funk sound (it felt like the tracks "1999" and "Little red corvette", plus to some degree the ballad "Free", were the only ones that had a different formula than the rest of the album). A good selection for this collection, and impressively more explicit than later albums--I can see why MTV refused to show the video for "Automatic", and I'm not at all sure I understand what all's going on in "Lady cab driver", but it's not a Disney-friendly track. It all makes me wish I was more of a Prince fan.

This was an enjoyable album but I honestly thought I’d like it more given that it’s Prince

Interestingly enough the collabs here brought the record down a notch. Ofc the title track really slaps, but some of the other songs were so generic and very reliant on the outside musicians that I was a bit underwhelmed and felt like Prince was drowned out here

This album was good. Prince in his usual fashion entices the listener with his erotic and indiscriminate nature all throughout the album. The runtime on many of the songs felt too drawn out. This album did not have to be over an 1hr long. Now there weren't any bad songs and the production as usual slapped. I wish the fat on here was trimmed considerably. Still, very good! Top 5: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, D.M.S.R , and Free no bad songs (maybe Let's Pretend We're Married since it was slightly too vulgar for my taste but calling bad would be dishonest) 3.50/5

It's good and very listenable, but ultimately it's another pop album from the 80s.

My favorite Prince song is Little Red Corvette. It always has been and always will be. I also like 1999. Other than that, I didn’t know any other songs on this album. It was a little long. None of the songs stood out to me, but it was much better than a lot of stuff I’ve had to listen to.

• 3/5 • After the first few singles, it gets pretty repetitive (with the exception of Lady Can Driver)

chill party vibes. prince is the washing machine, and we're the laundry. feels like every other track we're going from pop to rock, funk, new-wave, or whatever else. with that being said... bro dropped like 3 hits at the start and then made like 8 9 minute long tracks about having sex or smth?? solid 3

Deeply weird, but in like, kind of a good way

Some interesting pop but there is no reason for every song to be 7-8 minutes long.

1999 is a bop, the rest is OK. Lady Cab Driver can eff right off.

Today I learned what the Minneapolis sound is. It's hard for me to really enjoy this combination of a very organic bass coupled with machine crisp percussion. It's the sound that comes to mind when I think of the '80s, I've never loved it, and I'm learning that I've never given Prince a thorough listen because that sums the better part of his catalog. I now know what to expect. There's some Kanye level ego here. Hypersexual, dramatic, intense, and very catchy. It's easy to dance to, even if it's not my thing. I actually enjoy the lengthened tracks with the use of the Revolution, I just wish the composition featured alternate instruments. It works real well conceptually from start to finish, cheesy as it may feel. 2.9/5

Some groovy bits but then it lost my attention in the moaning sections.

Prima, maar ook niks aparts

It was ok

Great artistry, but I’m not a fan of this sound.

Ok, good but long.

Sexy, funky, fun. Game, blouses

Childhood album. Need to reposted

I feel this album is a bit pretentious, it’s way longer than it needs to be, the songs finish and then seem to fade out for 4 minutes, musically it’s great it’s prince what do you expect, but I feel like he tried to hard with this album

More of a lo-fi sound then I had expected

Some fun and very funky tunes in the first half. Too bad the 2nd half is mostly some random jamming and rambling without too much direction. Some songs like Free are even a bit bland. Also what's up with the moaning background vocals on Lady Cab Driver?

Pinja tanssii paljon!! Hyvä biisi svengaa kuin hirvi. I did not pay a lot of attention to it but I started moving involuntary to it so its a good sign!

Only knew "Party like it's 1999" before this which is great. But again I feel this is one of those albums where the title song is doing all the heavy lifting. Rest is forgettable on review.

A scandalous album, it's clear Prince was at peak horndog mode at this point in time. Crazy that the year 1999 probably felt so far into the future when this was written. "Little Red Corvette" is probably my favorite on this album, but it's a fun listen all the way through in it's entirety.

Moro moro :D Olipahan albumi täynnä omaperäistä menoa. Tiettyyn mielentilaan ku pääsin nii upposi ihan hyvin. Hauska kuunneltava.

Prinssin tuotanto on aika tuntematonta itselle ehkä aivan hittibiisejä lukuun ottamatta.

Very nice vibes, yes

Zuviel Pop, zu wenig Gitarren.

Strong start with some bangers (1999, little red corvette) - some funky stuff in there but I can see why radio edits exist - lots of ad libbing over a looped riff. Strong sexual themes throughout (it is prince after all) with some interesting sound effects to boot. Perhaps not as strong as other prince albums (purple rain) but solid overall.

Weird grooves.

It’s Prince but also, it’s Prince

Maravilloso

Funky. Fun. Dancy. Sexy. Not really my thing, but good stuff nonetheless.

Some catchy melodies and beats here, but my god, the songs go on too long. Shave three or four minutes off some of the songs and it would be far more tolerable. It’s almost like a Prince parody album. The title track is one of the worst songs on the album; overplayed. If you ask AI to create a bland, overly pretentious, self indulgent Prince song, it would create something like “Lady Cab Driver”. That’s over 8 minutes long! I didn’t hate it, in fact, at times I enjoyed it, but it’s too much. After “Dirty Mind” and “Controversy”, this is a disappointment. It’s nowhere near as bad as the awful “Purple Rain”, so it gets 3/5

soulful. classy. out there. music. prince.

Some of the tracks outstay their welcome, but the hits are undeniable

People love Prince. I’m not as enamoured. The two hits to start the album are good, and then it gets less interesting. There are more moments than just that, but there is too much information for me to absorb in one sitting.

God damn Prince was a horny motherfucker! Couple of good jams that everyone knows. The rest was meandering synth pop.

One of the first cassette tapes I owned. The first three songs are iconic. The rest of the album doesn’t really hold up well with the passage of time. When I first saw this was going to be the album for today, I initially thought well this will be a 5 star album, but as the songs progressed the rating kept dropping. The first three songs ensure a 3 star but I could be talked into 2.5 stars.

I think I just prefer singles Prince!

some nice sounds, some with weird sounds

Was ok, not the best, not the worst, listened to it at least. Some songs were enjoyable. 7/10. Won't return.

Good artist, good guitarist, good music. Died way to young.

Yeah, it’s dated. But it’s also fun, fearless, and full of attitude. Not every track hits, and some could’ve used a trim, but 1999 is still a blast to revisit—especially if you’re in the mood to dance!!

Time has not been kind to this album. The hits are still the hits, but the rest of the album felt quite pedestrian.

It's just standard rock/pop, I don't understand the whole Prince cult of personality.

Through the first third I was like, it's not totally for me, but I get why people like this and I'm bobbing my head, but it sure just kept going.

I don't think anyone can say Prince wasn't talented. Dude was a powerhouse, and also had the best Super Bowl half-time show. It's still an impressive album from 1982 - but aside from the bigger hits (1999, Little Red Corvette) it shows that in spite of his technical prowess, it's still banking on his eccentricities over the power of the music.

Although I can understand why this album is culturally significant, it’s not really for me. I did enjoy a few songs greatly, but the misses were too far from my personal taste for me to rate this any higher.

Highlight Song/s: Little Red Corvette My first Prince album. The Minneapolis Sound is definitely quite peculiar sounding. One big thing I don't like about this album is that everything about it is overly long; the song length, the album length and the same synth going over and over again. Making the long album even more tedious than a 70 minute album would normally be. I truly do hope the other albums aren't as egregious. Especially "Sign 'O' The Times." And did they REALLY have to put a woman moaning in "Lady Cab Driver?" It comes off incredibly trashy. Basically I'm nitpicking every little bit and piece, because just I didn't enjoy it. It isn't bad, but it ain't for me.

point7.

Mis favoritas: Free, Something In The Water y International Lover

In this, having put the 70s decisively to bed nine months previously, Prince goes into labour and gives birth to the 80s. There’s coos aplenty reserved for sweetheart jams like “Little Red Corvette” and “Lady Cab Driver”; some awkward glances around the room during “Something in the Water…” and “Free”. For the most part, though, everyone just takes notes. Hard to believe there, standing on the maternity ward, but one day this album would turn 18. It’d be the year 2000 then, and what a time that’ll be: who can predict what strange twists and turns human history will have taken; what exciting new forms art, music and culture will have taken. Oh yeah, Prince. Prince predicted it. All of it. Enjoy it or not, you better start taking notes.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Never listened all the way through before. Just the singles. Lots of long jams which was fun.

Got boring quickly, this early 80s synth stuff blended with Princes voice just doesn’t do it for me. Still good songwriting and production. 7/10

I think Prince likes sex. Favorite Track: Little Red Corvette

Decent album, nothing stellar though, did kind of have higher hopes but it didn't quite hit the mark I was expecting it to.

★★★½

Lite trist i längden men annars bra vibes.

Decent listen.

Probably would have been huge in the 80s

There is some nice experimentation on this album and it's overall not bad. Enjoyable listen. 3/5

I think I listened to this album on the sofa one day whilst I was lying around during the COVID lockdown. I was staying at my parents, furloughed from my job, I'd started writing music reviews for small bands to pass the time. But i was also exploring a lot of music, I think I was interested in Prince at the time because of Purple Rain, so I went and listened to this album, but i don't remember much of it apart from the title track 1999. It's very synthy, I always associate Prince with guitar skills but he had a huge and varied career so I guess this is like a very 80s album. Very synth driven, some cool hooks but it sounds quite thin, very tinny on the drums. Some very nice synth patterns in a few songs, like DMSR This album is theatrical as hell, I guess they thought the world was going to end, it's like they went into the future and robots have taken over so they're just going nuts before they all die. I guess the world ending in the year 2000 thing was built up a lot in the 80s/90s

Recognizing this is heretical, I like Prince's persona more than I like Prince's music, particularly a whole album's worth. The title track and "Little Red Corvette" are brilliant. but much further in, I want someone to make him stop that drum machine and the keyboard stabs, and no one will. I do enjoy the fact that an album this big has a cover drawn with magic marker. See, that's a great Prince move!

I love Prince and I'm happy there are three Prince albums on this list and I'm butthurt that Dirty Mind is not one of those three, yes this album is fine but it's a vehicle for its banger singles, which are absolutely bangers yes, but... Prince absolutely does better than this.

I'd heard the huge hits and some of the lesser hits.this could have been an amazing single Lp but Prince gonna Prince.

There's some undeniable great moments. Obviously Prince is an incredibly talented multi-instrymentalist and his screams are equal to Sly's. Same when he really goes for the funk feel, and theres some killer (if a bitnover the top) guitar playing, but still... so much of this record leaves me not just underwhelmed but somehow annoyed? It's feels soft, contrived and ego driven. Maybe at the time it was interesting to push so much on the nose sexuality but the canned moans and the lyrics at the end of the album feel so lame and cheesy listening now. Yet another failed attempt by me to get into Prince.

This is good, not a to of replayability. Could probably be a 4

Some really great songs and some very repetitive songs. Overall, not too bad.

Decent, not sure how likely I am to listen to the album from start to finish again though

There's some great tracks on this but a lot just felt a couple of minutes too long, kept flipping between 3 and 4 but settled with 3 during all the critics

It was probably unfortunate for Prince that Michael Jackson's Thriller dropped a month after this album. Thriller just came up on this list for me recently, and while 1999 is a good album, it just pales in comparison to Thriller.

Not bad...not too good. Just Prince.

Starts out incredibly strong, but fades in the final few songs. He's mostly trying to have fun and be dance-y here, which is fine. But in hindsight, this is an album that has to be seen as just starting to hone the genius that would come a couple of years later with Purple Rain.

Very strong start to the album but it doesnt maintain that standard after the 4th or 5th song. Some of the songs in middle to end i thought were unnecessarily long. I found myself listening to the same synth part replayed over and over with slight variations of funky guitar over the top. Perhaps a change of octave. Not enough to stop me from getting a little bit bored. Vocals are great. Some fantastic guitar, solid when both ripping a solo and when peppering in the funky licks. I think if some of the tracks were half the length and the total album time was perhaps 45/50 mins this would be a more enjoyable listen. I mean Lady Cab Driver is actually a tune but over 8 mins?? International Lover is a decent closer. As it stands we are looking at a 7/10. Favourite track - Little Red Corvette.

why did he name this 1999 if it was released in 1982? Is He Stupid? in all seriousness: its alright. Favorite song being the first 2 mins of Lady cab driver. Songs drag on for a while, though.

Meh tier

Pas mal non plus

I've owned this record for years. It's actually 2 records. I can honestly say I've never listened to the 2nd record. Side A is some of the best music in history. Side B first track is really fun...but it just keeps going maybe a little too long. 2nd track starts to fall away, becomes overly repetitive...and is even longer. And thanks to this project, I can confirm now that there's no need to listen to Side C or Side D again.

i didn't fully get it, but it might grow on me, or inside me (?)

this would have been higher bc there are some certified bops on here BUTTTT the middle part of lady cab driver was a tough listen on this monday morning and made me cringe (although the guitar solo that immediately followed was v cool)

Catchy dance pop. Not my jam

Not as good as I remember 3/5

It's not really my thing, I can't judge it. I want to like Prince, and I acknowledge the quality in some of his songs. While others do nothing to me.

*Fun but repetitive *Fave track - LRC *Worth the occasional revisit RATING- 6.5/10

I enjoyed this about as much as I thought I would.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die: 5/1001 I have a lot of complicated thoughts about 1999. It's funky, it's groovy, it's provocative, and it’s undeniably groundbreaking. Every element in isolation -- synths, vocals, lyrics, even the risque undertones - is appealing. But the album as a whole feels overextended, with songs that wear out their welcome. I respect the influence and can hear how it shaped future music I genuinely connect with, but the execution here doesn't always land for me personally. Tracks like “Lady Cab Driver” showcase the brilliance and frustration in one go: great groove, killer guitar solo, punchy drums and bass, layered synths, weird in a cool way, and yet I found myself ready to move on well before the song ended. It never caused me to release into the music. There’s nothing wrong with a long track, but if you’re going to stretch it, you have to keep evolving it. Too often here, Prince just loops it until the energy fizzles - I never felt so connected it had my attention, captivated enough to care, energized enough to groove. There are standouts; 1999 is sex-charged and politically tinged. Little Red Corvette is in your face and fun. But songs start loosing their steam through sheer repetition, just like Delirious, which at a little over four minutes, is the shortest track on the album, yet still felt too long. I can see how it worked at a club in the 80's. These standout parts aren't enough to make me put the whole album on though. By the time I hit songs like “Let’s Pretend We’re Married,” I found myself zoning out more than tuning in. The weirder and more stretched it gets, the less fun it became. Podium: 1. Little Red Corvette 2. 1999 3. Delirious While the individual parts of 1999 show off levels of Prince’s talents, the way they’re tied together leaves me unmoved. Does it belong on this list? Certainly. Will it make it to any of my personal lists? Certainly not. This one’s legacy will always be bigger than my personal enjoyment of it. I can appreciate the foundation it laid and the envelope it pushed, I just don’t feel pulled in buy it. Very few tracks call me back, and I have little desire to experience the album in full again. For these reasons, I give 1999 by Prince 2.5/5 stars.

I'm just not a fan of prince

Made me feel Uncomfy

I still really like this, some of the 80’s production/sounds sound a bit flat.

Prince? Again? I only just had him! Honestly; theres only so much Prince I can listen to at once, and over an hour is too long 3/5

I guess I just like the hits, was just so 80's and so about sex

Jaa a, suurimmilta osin aika pilipali osaston musiikkia. Parhaat: Free, Little Red Corvette, All the Critics Love U in New York

I feel he was at the top of his game with this lp. After this I think he turned into a jam band

The first two tracks on this album were unmitigated hits. I'd be shocked to meet someone near my age (40, as of writing) who's never heard both 1999 and Little Red Corvette. It's pure, uncut pop music -- but not overly sugary, just catchy and accessible. Part of the reason it just lands in the 'pop' category is likely that the various genre influences (you can hear funk, R&B and rock in parts, throughout) are so various that it kind of averages back out to pop. Some (Delrious) is just weird, but it's always catchy. I'll take a moment to diverge into the production of this album. The synths were cutting edge at the time, I have no doubt, but they sound like children's toys now. The drums, likewise, are shit. Well-played, groovy, perfectly serviceable in every way except that they sound like a Casio keyboard -- too much reverb, no dynamics, way too clean and sterile. I would be shocked to learn that there was an acoustic kit involved at all, but 80's hyper-compression and over-reverb can do that. Vocals are great. Mixed a little bit down in the blend for pop, which does allow the band (this is the first record with Prince's longtime backing back, the Revolution) to shine. The harmonies are precise and sweet but I could stand more of them. The bass is round and mercifully left out of the 80s-ness of things. Prince's guitar sounds excellent (probably a Tele, but who knows) but is mostly pretty quiet among the other elements. The last part is kind of a shame but prototypical of Prince. He's probably a top-100 guitar player for the 20th century and always kept it pretty discreet. Pay attention to the solo at the end of Little Red Corvette. In the end, it's a catchy pop album from Minneapolis and it probably contains a lot of technical innovation. The thing about technical innovation is that it sometimes doesn't sound all that impressive, 40-odd years later. It's hard to say if I needed to hear this in my life. I don't have the context for what came before and after this in the mainstream that would mark this as influential, or as a part of the work of many generations of musicians. It's not clearly a voice of anger like early Dylan or Rage (though 1999 is a protest song about nuclear proliferation). It doesn't wear its musical genius as obviously as Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds (dozens of parts composed in his head). I'm going to put the problem down to the 80s. Between Prince's habit of keeping his personal technical musical talent (a clear, wide-ranging voice and a ferocious guitar ability) only modestly displayed and the way that 80s production trends flattened everything into a mess of cheesy synth textures and soulless reverb, I'm going to say we should probably all take in a Prince album or two, and they should be Purple Rain and one other; why not this one? Not a masterpiece, but maybe that's just because I find most pop boring. 1999 by Prince almost transcends that but, ultimately, doesn't.

Really good but it's too long. With a lot of the tracks feeling very similar it's makes the hour 10 minute runtime feel a bit long. However it's still a very fun listing 4*

First three songs are classic, but the rest is quite outdated. 1999 Little Red Corvette Delirious, and ~ Lady Cab Driver

1999, little red corvette not bad

I've never really got on that much with Prince, so I wasn't expecting to like this. However, it's not too bad. It feels a bit dated, but it's also completely unique and it's clear he's a singular artist. I like the parts that are particularly upbeat and funky. The title track is the best one.

Dance rock.

I think I listened to this at the wrong time. This is not the mood for a Monday morning at work. It was fun and high energy but maybe its the fact that I'm staring down an entire work week but this kinda annoyed me.

Prince was SO horny...

I like some Prince - definitely not all. I gravitate towards the songs where he rips the shit out of his guitar. There are only a few of those on here - and too many songs that get repititive. 3/5

This album started amazing with the first 2 songs, but everything after was subpar. Some of those lyrics remind me of moral panic around Prince from the video game history course.

Fun, danceable, very 80’s.

Some great songs and some mediocre (too long) songs

Some fantastic parts, but some parts drag. A real eclectic album.

As a friend once wrote about Purple Rain, not really my thing but can't deny the quality, variety and talent. It’s way too long to keep me engaged though. I still don’t get why people love Prince so much, there are funkier artists out there with better hooks. Admittedly the bulk of his songs are solid to good, but they are not particularly interesting to me and this listen hasn’t persuaded me otherwise. I liked the grove on Lady Cab Driver. There’s probably a porn channel with the same name.

When this hits, it hits hard. When it doesn't, I understand why Prince supposedly has like 328,356 unreleased songs in his vault when he died.

Good album, first 2 songs all-time classics!

Ganska bra.

I did not use a private Spotify session for this one. Lots of hits. It's funky enough, but too many keyboards and I got to say the screaming got to me towards the end.

Another long album. The songs seemed to drag on a bit. The good songs were good, but the others were meh! I’d say 50/50 good to filler ratio.

I am interested in how listening to this album goes. I've never listened to a whole Prince album, and usually I am burnt out on the hits because of the radio, but 1999 started and I am feeling it. The early 80s synthesizer is killing me on some of these songs. Was never a big fan of the sound and it is HEAVILY featured. I know at the time it was novel, but blah. I would love to hear a redone version of this with out the synthesizers. A lot of these songs sound really similar to each other, for instance lady cab driver I thought was just little red corevette again. If this is intentional, they succeeded? A lot of this just feels really experimental. The hits are the hits, and a lot of everything else feels just like messing around.

The only Prince album I have is Sign O’The Times. The rest of his music that I have in my library is a greatest hits/B-sides compilation. So I never spent anytime with his actual discography. Now, the first three songs on 1999, I do know and they are all great. I love Delirious. Little Red Corvette reminds me of a water park I went to as a kid because they played this song constantly. The rest of 1999 was all new material to me. And it was about a 50/50 split on songs I liked and didn’t like. The stand out tracks here were Automatic, D.M.S.R., and Free. Most of Lady Cab Driver was cool. Didn’t really care for the simulated sex part though. International Lover was a bit hokey. Some of the songs I didn’t really care for came down to the lyrics more than the music. I get that Prince was a very sexual being but 1999 seemed like music you’d play at an orgy. I mean, c’mon man! We get it already. Ha ha. That does affect my rating because I don’t think I could listen to 1999 in full without skipping through some songs. I gotta go with a 3 rating here. 3/5

I wouldn’t be upset if I had to listen to this again, it was interesting and a good listen at the least. But I’m definitely not seeking out to listen to it again, it just wasn’t all that much my thing. Very long too, which isn’t always bad if it’s a great album but I don’t think this album was quite there. Solid enough though. I really enjoyed the variety of ways he used his voice.

Must admit, never been a huge Prince fan. I appreciate his talent but it wasn't really my cup of tea. So I listened to this album for the first time. I, like everyone else , heard the hits and liked them. But what surprised me was 1999. I've heard it a million times but never really listened. This one has oomph. The dichotomy between the style of the song and the lyrics really hits home. The world is F#$%& so let's have fun while it lasts. Album a three but that song knocks it up a bit

Classic

international lovers is very secrets from a girl

some absolute HOF classics but i kinda thought the rest of it would be better. also way too long

Probably a really good dance album, but my folky ears just cannot appreciate it fully. Stand out songs: Little Red Corvette

Ujevnt. Passet dårlig på en sliten fredag.

A couple of hits a few misses

I’m cool with one 7+ minute long FreakJam on a Prince album, but FOUR?! Now you’ve crossed a line, buster.

This made me sleepy.

It's good but I'm not super into it

It’s a fun little album. Oh wait. It’s really just trying to get me to bed.

Personally not my style but it’s alright

Little Red Corvette

Some nice tracks there but not perfect

Prince fucked my ear for 1 hour and 10 minutes. The first half of this album is amazing and then it drags towards the end.

Starts off with a bang BANG, and then just kinda drags on without much intrigue. Airplane sex, though.

Vinyl: Yes Fav: Little Red Corvette Notes: Cut some this shit down and it's probably 4 stars.

Purple is the color body fluids glow under black light. In that context it makes a LOT of sense why it was Prince's signature color. This one starts strong and kinda fades imo, though the fun this dude had singing about banging is always fun.

Fun nostalgia

Clever music but not my style :) thx!

Half bangers, half filler.

Tonight I'm Gonna Party Like It's 1999 1001 Albums Generator 20 (04/30/2025) 1999 is the album that propelled 5'2 Prince into stardom and is largely responsible for introducing the Minneapolis Sound brand of funk into the mainstream consciousness. Defined by funky synth basslines and programmed drums, Minneapolis Sound was most popular in the 1980's, but it continues to influence artists today such as Bruno Mars and Usher. Prince is an artist who has somehow, to this point, escaped my grasp other than the fantastic song Purple Rain, so I was excited to finally listen to a full album by the man who would become O(+>. First things first, this album is horny as fuck. I feel like I just had sex with Prince just by listening to this thing. Look at the lyrics for Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, and International Lover to start. Anyone that claims that music is "too sexual" nowadays should listen to this album right here. The sound of this album is also very funky. The only other Minneapolis Sound album I have heard is Janet Jackson's Control, and this has the exact same specific types of busy programmed drum beats with lots of fills and synth basslines. The sexual swagger exuding from this little guy can be so strong that it can almost feel like over-compensation, but I'm sure that he really was gettin down and dirty. The album starts with its two most well known songs. The first song, the title track, is the most popular song on the album. Opening with Prince's voice with a robotic filter over it and based on the paranoia at the time that the world would end in 2000, Prince asks one simple thing of the listener: party like it's 1999. In the world of this song, the world is at war, and Prince chooses to dance instead of die. This is the strongest song on the album, and honestly it's not really close. Unfortunately, the second track, Little Red Corvette, is much less exciting. Prince metaphorically describes a one-night stand by comparing it to a ride in a sports car. It's clever, but the music is a bit placid and Prince croons his way through the verses until the pretty good chorus. The guitar solo is nice too. I know this song is popular, but it's unfortunately not quite as good as I was hoping. The rest of this album is quite variable in quality. Delirious features a very silly synth that takes away from the sexiness of the song. I kept getting reminded of that guy on Reddit that listened to Cbat during sex to feel the rhythm lol. Prince's energy is good, but I just can't with this instrumental. D.M.S.R. brings the quality way back up with perhaps the funkiest song on the whole album. I also felt seen when he said "All the white people, clap your hands on the four now". Thanks Prince. Free is a dreadfully cheesy ballad about being grateful for what you have or whatever, while Lady Cab Driver is a wonderfully cheesy boogie about, erm, intercourse with the titular lady cab driver. The final song is strong and has a fun little bit of theming with the whole "Prince Air" schtick. Overall, Prince's 1999 is an album that defines the period in which it was created. In doing so, it also intrinsically ties itself in the cliches of the time, making it hard to appreciate as a modern listener. While I can appreciate the influence this has, I don't find myself coming back to it in whole, in spite of some really strong individual moments. 3/5. Favs: 1999 D.M.S.R. International Lover Least Fav: Free

Pretty good, some classics and some filler

Not what I expected from Prince, not much guitar, some interesting songs but 3/5.

I'm not one to complain about length on an album but seriously another Prince album that's over an hour long. I do like some of this album, the title track, "Delirious" & "Little Red Corvette" are great but Prince definitely has a problem with dragging out songs way longer than they need to be 7/10 Favourite: Delirious Least Favourite: D.M.S.R.

Insanely horny

This is the only Prince album I know well. It starts brilliantly in the first two songs and then proceeds to bump down slowly slowly towards a slightly boring conclusion wirh a few higher bounces.

like some of the vibes but not a huge fan of lyrics

I liked this for the most part. The actual song parts were good, catchy, listenable. But then they all draged on with annoying looping instrumentals that I just wanted to skip (and honestly did on a couple).

Learned that in some countries, there was a 12" version of this released, rather than the double 12" we heard. That would have probably made for a better listen. Some of the very long songs on this felt like dance remixes that would have been better off as singles. The hits were hits but the rest of the album dragged.

Starts out super fun but peters out a bit in my opinion

Some amazing music. Especially for 1982. Did I hear the world's first industrial song? Too many songs are too damn long though. To the point where they are just plain masturbatory. Also, way, way to much filler.

Solid prince album for never really hearing him prior to this !!! 1999 is a classic, and a bunch of other solid songs throughout. Have had a bunch of less then an hour albums in recent so it made it a lil harder to focus the whole time

Never been the biggest fan of Prince, like the hits are alright and the rest has cool moments, but it's just not my type of music. Didn't appreciate all of the moaning, but whatever, that's his style.

Funky but a bit dated. Need to delve into more Prince

Bright bouncy synthesizer and breathy vocals. The hits are okay, the rest is the same

The first two tracks were the best. 'Automatic' overstayed its welcome.

The man can sing but this went on too long. Stand-out: 1999

Some songs had a rea funky, others dragged. I think I'd have loved Prince at the time but wonder if you needed to be around then to truly appreciate him

Reminded me of a funk album that we got a while back. Sounds good but it’s just long and repetitive.

5/10 - why is prince so horny. I feel like there were some good songs but a lot was taken away by him talking

I fully expected to go five stars on this one, but I guess an album that starts with 1999 and Little Red Corvette can only go downhill after that. Delirious is still pretty great. Everything after that, not so much. Prince had a tendency to go off the rails with the hyper sexuality, and that’s a problem here. Some of the songs get overly repetitive, too. I’m tho king Lady Driver mostly. I remember the name because that’s all he sang for half the song. I still dig Prince and was really disappointed when I didn’t love this album. But, truth be told, I was kind of glad when it was over.

Curse you Prince for creating some maestral pop composition and then following them up with a crap ton of dance fillers. ⭐⭐⭐

Classic but dated sounds (especially the drum machine)

general: 1st song hit me w crazy nostalgia every song kinda has the same energy but i’m not mad abt it these songs are toooo long man top 3: delirious (shortest song on the album loll) 1999 little red corvette

some great prince songs! Also songs with aggravating synth melodies.

Was Prince the horniest man in 1982? Maybe so

Listened at 7:30am, wrong headspace for a party album. Only listened to 3 songs, need to revisit.

3.5ish? Some of the long grove sections were fine and other times it was just meh. Some really neat moments.

It's a dance album. He's got much better stuff out there to listen to.

Prince has a massive discography which means that you're almost guaranteed to find something you like. It also means you likely to find everything else as well, which sadly this album felt like for me. Some stand out tracks, and some that just didn't work for me.

If I listen funk I would like it sweaty and edgy. 1999, and whole production from Prince, doesn't fit this approach. This is just too clean, almost sterile. Anyone can appreciate amazing skills of Prince as superb multi-instrumentalist and as a artist doing his stuff only on his own way. This demands 3 starts throughout I don't like this album.

The first 3-4 songs were absolutely brilliant, but then it went flat again—until that final track, International Lover, an excellent piece of art. Still, it lacked the guts or charisma to raise the whole album to a 4-star rating.

1999 is a bop, buts too long and I got bored. The rest of the album follows the same path, good grooves, not much in the way of songs. I wasn't too fussed

Thought I'd enjoy it more. It started off with some hits, but fell off fast.

I was not a Prince fan when he was popular. I've grown to respect him over the decades since. Hearing this album, there were times it was a 5 (first 3-4 songs), then somewhere around Automatic, it was really losing it form me. It's still not an album I would ever reach for, so it can't get over a 3. But I respect it's existence in this list. One should hear this album before one dies.

Consistent, quality song writing, good groove. Still sounds fresh and not dated.

Como el primer tema dice: "party like it's 1999". ¿Y qué son esos gritos en "Something in the Water"? WTF.

Prince is talented. But I got tired of the 9-minute songs of him screwing around with cheesy lyrics. Some great songs are on this record, but here's how I would rank it. -0.5 stars for lyrics. There's great stuff( All the critics love you in New York, delusional, free) but also a boat load of crap. -0.5 for catchiness. Again, some are amazing, and some are super boring. -1 for instrumental quality. Great guitar, and drums. -1 for innovation. You hear Prince in a lot of newer artists. -0 for a good mix throughout the album. Too much filler. Overall: A well-deserved three stars. 6/10

Upbeat and weird like no one else.

Prince is an icon, great musician, composer and all around pop star. Really capture the fun 80's post disco dance sound with fun sexy ideas and a unique childlike wonder approach to building up environments in a song. Celebrating good times in light of the bad. However, on a less deeper level of listening this shit is 80's pop cheese. Nothing stands out. For that look to Prince's earlier music for true alpha musician prowess.

Honestly, I'm generally not a huge fan of Prince, but this album I quite liked.

Just nope. 3

I’m a fan of a lot of Prince’s work, but this has never been one of my favorite full listens in his catalog. 1999 contains some funky, anthemic and overall outstanding highlights of 80’s pop including the title track, Little Red Corvette and DMSR. But it feels like a few of these tracks outstay their welcome. Whats more for me is that Prince would go on, very shortly after this album, to up his production and writing game at large significantly. An example for me is the “I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth”. While that, undoubtedly, gets the narrator’s point across, within 5 years Prince would be approaching sex and relationships in a much more layered and mature way. A song like If I Was Your Girlfriend shows him writing from multiple perspectives, one of which proclaiming “We don’t have to make children to make love, and we don’t have to make love to have an orgasm. Your body’s what I’m all about.” TL;DR: Solid album, very high highs, but he would go on to make much more compelling work.

It was aight just a little too over the top for me

First couple songs: bangers Last couple songs: not bad Middle songs: meeeeeeeeh

Nice - lots of sex noises though.

Funky and electric. 1999 is a classic. I see the appeal of prince!

I'm not as big on the Minneapolis sound as I am on Rick James, P-Funk, or more traditional Funk genres. But it's still a good album

The title track is definitely the biggest highlight. D.M.S.R. was fun too.

it was good, prince is a weird dude tho

3 - is this what pop music from today will sound like 40 years from now? I liked a few but it’s not even the best album named 1999

This was too horny for the gym at 6 in the morning

I would probably love this album as a whole a lot more if half the songs weren't SO. GOD. DAMN. LONG.

Insane front half but kinda peters out toward the end, honestly!

Hard to listen to “party” albums by yourself. Of course I like the hits, and there were some other songs I liked but can’t really imagine that I would put this on just for a listen. 3 1/2 stars

why was this album 10 years long

Well, this definitely deserves a spot on the list! Even if it’s not my style of music, I still recognize his genius. And I don’t mind a listen every now and then :)

For the longest time I thought the title song was actually made in 1999 because they played it so much on the radio that year. I always wondered why the sound was so dated and clearly not 1999 at the time. Anyway, having learned it was released in 1982 makes sense. Probably right at the beginning or in the thick of the synthy 80s sound. Listen, I know prince is incredibly talented, and I've even grown to like some of his hits like Red Corvette and When Doves Cry over the years. But the sound just doesn't speak to me as an overall rule. So it's tough to appreciate a full album. Songs like Delierious are just straight goofy. Then again, there are some slept on funky gems here like DMSR that I might add to a playlist at some point. I just can't see this as an album I'd groove to on the regular, not my scene. Prince songs are best enjoyed here and there on the radio for me.

Fun and funky. Not as funky as 'Dirty mind' nor as euphoric as 'Purple rain' but a Prince is a Prince.

Bouncy 80s pop, loads of synths. Legendary Prince beats. His breakthrough album. Funky. Horny. Can absolutely appreciate Prince but this doesn’t do much for me.

Definitely some fun songs and you can feel how this would have been a really unique and game-changing album at the time. Not my favorite style, but I do love some funky basslines and Prince does have an impressive voice. Not really for me, but a fun album.

Funky, liked it more than I expected.

It is impressive that Prince played most all the instruments you hear on this. The guy had some chops! Also impressive that this was recorded analog in 1982, lots of studio trickery going on. This is another case where I was really only able to listen through this once so couldn’t get a good handle on a lot of the deep cuts. All these hour-plus albums are killing me! Best songs: “Little Red Corvette”, “D.M.S.R.”, “Free” Biggest head scratcher: how “Delirious” was a top 10 charting single with that annoying synth lead I will rate this a 3 because I know Purple Rain will be coming later on.

A very consistent sound, very prince.

Another 3.5. Enjoyed this one more than I thought I would and it was interesting to do a dive into what is such an iconic style. Struggled a bit with the length of some songs and overt sexuality.

That is one horny, horny man. Go take a cold shower artist formally known as sexual predator

Has anyone this openly horny ever been as widely beloved as Prince? I had no idea this was his breakout album. "Little Red Corvette" is a great song, and apparently was the first Prince song most people heard. I liked the album better on second listen but still feel like it's mostly emblematic of the 80s Prince sound that I never really could get into overall. This, for me, doesn't touch Love Symbol, but I would listen again.

First? 3/5 Again 3/5

Prince is another artist that I’ve never really gotten into. Obviously a super talented musician, but there was always something that made me hesitate to jump into the Prince fandom. That being said I actually liked this more than I expected. I was familiar with the singles but the later tracks were more enjoyable than I expected going into this one.

Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5

not sure how to feel about this one tbh. it was funky and fun but LONG. it really dragged for me. wrap up it prince

mom, come pick me up, i'm confused and scared and there's a very horny man here for some reason

This is such a great example of my view of Prince's music. Some phenomenal songs that are in a genre I do not like and a bunch that are flat, dull and do not appeal to me. I can easily see how someone who likes pop and R&B and soul would rate this a 4 or 5. I almost went with a 4, as some songs are that good. Just not enough for me.

Was dreading this, but it doesn't seem to suffer from the usual guitar histrionics of other Prince fare. He seems at his best when doing electronics, rather than showing off his virtuosity on a multitude of instruments. The first couple of tracks are great pop, and then this settles into more straightforward 'good' pop songs. They bounce along without causing much fuss, but I wouldn't go out of my way to play most of them.

Better than I expected to be honest

What great way to start an album! It's got to bangers to start, but as with most prince, he was an amazing musician and knew what he wanted but I more of a hits guy, but the album had some surprises! Definitely liked it more than I thought but still not better than purple rain!

I thought I would enjoy this more!! Title track is obviously great but most of it I could pass on 6 out of 10

Personal preference

Alright album, had fun listening till the end. Songs near the end started to go too long

Favorite Track: Little Red Corvette

funk。I don’t really like but it’s relax

I like the idea (and lore) of Prince more than the pure listening to Prince. The only super bowl I ever attended was in Miami when he did Purple Rain in the pouring rain...that was sick.

I'm walking down the street and I can hear a commotion. It's a party in a giant purple mansion. Loud music playing, people fucking everywhere. Everyone is screaming and crying for Prince. PRINCE, PRINCE, PRINCE!!!! Prince sees me and seductively asks if I'd like to come in. I do. I want to be in the Prince party. I've always wanted to be in the Prince party! But I just can't. Too buttoned up maybe? Not horny enough? I get that Prince is great but for some reason I have never fully understood or connected to the music. There will be a song here or there I keep in the rotation, I think mainly from his self titled album. I asked my Mom what they thought of him when he was coming up and her answer was simple, "Pervert". After hearing "I want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" I get it. I'm glad that Prince existed and maybe some day I'll make it to the party.

I really love the premise of little red corvette: that Prince, a lascivious sex alien, thinks this girl needs to tone down her horniness a little. She must have been so confused. You’re telling me I’M too sexual prince? You’re wearing leather pants and a mesh blouse! You’re gyrating right now as we speak! Anyway, my favorite prince songs are when he wants to fuck a girl so bad it makes him emotional. I think even us white stiffs can relate to that feeling. In general, I like Prince more than most pop (1999 and little red corvette stand out) but it’s still pop, and thus a little formulaic over the course of an album. The unanimously upbeat grooves feel like they are really designed to be played in the background of a dance party, rather than listened to by yourself, so don’t lend themselves too well to this exercise. Most lot of these songs have a real ASS on them too, with these sort of standard riffs ending w overlong, repetitive outros. But I guess for prince’s tastes that’s probably fitting.

Very pleased The album titled track is ridiculously cool. Little red corvette (possibly overplayed) is a great one to follow. I also really liked DMSR and lady cab driver. Prince has always been that artist I don’t completely understand the hype for. Ive heard cool tracks, I know how flexible he was as a musician and his rockstar personality. His music can sometimes be just… overly poppy? With a talking heads weirdness. That said, hes got an incredibly unique voice to scream and sing. You cant take that away from him - not even Michael Jackson I still wouldnt put myself into his wild fan group, but im getting closer. His superbowl halftime show in the rain (from the early 00s) nearly pushed me there last night 😅

The songs all run a little long (even 1999, the only one I know on the album) which makes it quite a slog to get through as I'm quite impatient. Didn't manage to get through the whole album, but it wasn't dislikeable

I liked it, it was great, but there are other Prince records that are better than this

Would have probably blown my mind if I heard it for the first time in 1983. Some definite bangers - let's pretend we're married comes to mind. Lady cab driver's breakdown is great. Creativity comes through in each song. Sounds very "80's" synth keys, groove bass, the sound effects.

Good musically but not my jam.

Svag trea.

pretty good, classic, fun sound

Sexy, funky, groovy, sensual and fun. Classic Prince. I like it.

p485. 1982. 3 stars. Starts off rock hard and ends sadly limp and flaccid. There's not doubt he could write a tune, and was an exceptional musician, but no-one needs a double album of multiple 7+ minute tracks. A bit of judicious editing into a single album and this would have been an easy 5 stars.

I appreciate his work ethics and creativity, I just don't like the result very much. And there's too much of it. Favorite song: 1999

Reminiscent of 80s video game sounds and very raunchy 👀

A few 5 star songs. Great musicianship

I've always enjoyed Prince's main pop hits & respected his talent as one of the world's greatest guitar players of all time. But this album only had a few tracks I could get into, mostly the singles. The rest was definitely funky & well produced, but just never landed for me.

Albumi #130, 10.12.2024 Princen viides albumi vuodelta 1982.

i mean i guess its pretty good...

1999 and Little Red Corvette are both classics, so after those two I really thought this album was gonna get a four. But the rest just didn’t hold up for me.

I respect Prince and think he's a fantastic musician, but I just don't get on with a lot of his music. Whilst it's not for me, I recognise it's not bad in any way, so this rating seems fair.

Loved all the hits, but the others were so-so for me

For years I didn't think I liked Prince, apart from bangers like Purple Rain. It was only after he died when 6Music played him for about a month that I realised he had loads of tunes that I really liked. Vids like him shredding and stealing the show to While My Guitar Gently Weeps helped too. Highlights: 1999 Little Red Corvette D.M.S.R Lady Cab Driver. Bit too long but some lovely shredding at the end. International Lover. Wow ok. Felt like I needed a cigarette at the end of it. Think this might be the greatest song of all time. He literally cums in it. Lowlights: Delirious. Sounds like Black Lace. School disco music. Automatic. No reason this should be 9mins long as it doesn't do enough to justify. This album is a bit of a mixed bag but mostly enjoyed it. It's very sexy isn't it. Absolute shagger was ol' Prince. A solid 3.

So, I’ve liked this Prince album. The problem is I think the recording sounds shit. Which is mad for someone who is a supposed prolific writer and recording artist, I think he’s just shit at production. I hate the really clipped reverb/delay he has on his voice, which I suppose is his trademark, just makes the recordings sound a bit fuzzy. Also, some of the tunes end with dark undertones like when the woman calling for the police or the kid is asking why does everyone have a bomb at the end of 1999, I reckon he was a proper wrongun. The lines “I want to fuck the taste out of your mouth” and “(Yes, we're certain of it, he's definitely masturbating)” solidified this opinion. Not a bad album, room for improvement.

It was fine. Little Red Corvette is a banger, the rest OK. Gets a little much after a while.

Other than the known hits, this album does nothing for me. The double-time beat under every tune is just annoying.

I can't get into Prince. I wish I could but his music is just to weird for me.

The instrumental skill is there but I just wasn't into it.

Started strong and faded. Always room for Prince, even the mediocre stuff.

i hate sex, but groove is fine

Dance Music Sex Romance. This man was a purple horndog. Some interesting stuff here, but I view it more as a precursor to what would come from him later. Some of these songs are too long and become bland. Yet somehow still sexy? Blexy? I think that sums up how I feel about this album. Decent sex that just goes on for too long. For some of these songs, it feels like someone left the drum machine on and everyone forgot about it. But, I quite like a lot of the synths on the album, and Prince's wails and vocal swells are just awesome. Some good guitar solos, too, if somewhat random. Fav tracks: 1999, Automatic, International Lover

Classic album

It's not that often that I listen to much classic pop music, but when I do, I honestly don't mind it. I quite like a few of Prince's songs however his music just doesn't click with me. I forgot why, but last time I listened to a Prince album, there was something about it that just put me off his music for quite a while. Well enough time had passed since then, so it was definitely time for me to give Prince, and his music, another chance! Now I'd never actually listened to this Prince album in full before, and truth be told I actually really enjoyed a few songs and certain moments on this record. However, the one glaring problem I have with it is the lengthy runtime. The 11 song tracklist looks perfect on the surface, until you realise that the total runtime is 1 hour and 10 minutes. That's an average track length of 6.4 minutes, which would be fine if the songs were just a little more engaging and didn't drag out as much as they did (especially towards the ends of the songs when the track basically just turns into a Prince monologue of him telling me how badly he wants to do explicit things to me). Aaahhhhh.... that's what it was that put me off his music! 😂😂

Cool music but not REALLY for me. I like the singles but many of those songs were almost 10 minutes long. im sorry prince

Pretty good, but not quite as catchy as I expected?

First impression: repetitive, long, horny, and a little dated. Not bad, but it didn't really move me. Also the 1 in 1999 looks wild phallic.

Ah eleven tracks, great length...what? An hour and ten minutes?!

Groovy hits

This was an alright album. I know that it is Prince but it was mainly enjoyable as a background listen and wasn't too exciting to properly focus on the songs. A bit mid nowadays, 42 years later but as we all know, 42 is the meaning of life, so I'll just rate this somewhere in the middle.

This was less good than I assumed. I'm a Prince fan going way back, and his talent is undeniable...but dare I say I see him more of a singles artist?

the last part was a bit more experimental and i think and that is keeping me from giving 2 stars

I like the vibe, but the songs are too long for me, as is the album in general.

Definitely funky. I’m all about that funk but it started to get a little old by the end. I don’t know too much about prince other than his main songs so this was a good introduction. None of these songs seemed super innovative here but seems like he’s forming his overall sound. I’m excited for more of him tho.

1999 is one of the best songs that we’ve seen on the list. I felt as if the songs were each a bit too long, but I don’t know if I would have felt that way if I was just vibing and not intentionally listening to the album to get through it and rate it. Prince is like the Bean to Michael Jackson’s Ender in Ender’s Shadow. Michael Jackson is better in a lot of ways and more renowned, but there is something special and magical about Prince. He is a little bit looser/more experimental/less polished, but I think it makes his music fun and unique. It also makes it less easily digestible.

An album that I had no idea was going to rival Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret for the coveted Horniest Album on the List award. Starts out super strong with 1999 and Little Red Corvette and then the length and repetitive nature of the songs just drags you down. I’m not one to question the musical genius of Prince, but I will say my rating would be a star higher if the album was 30% shorter.

I’ve always had a lot of respect for Prince because his talent and uniqueness are undeniable. But just recognizing that doesn’t mean I’m fully on board with him or really enjoy his music. There are definitely elements in his songs that I like, but they’re often mixed with other parts that I’m not as into. So, for me, this ends up being a pretty middle of the road album.
