Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Some classic songs.

Prince was great because he would do these undeniable party anthems like the title track, but there would be lines like "We could all die any day" and "Can't run from the revelation." Then he would transition to a romantic slow jam and throw in asides about torture and face-fucking. My dude was an absolute freak and I love him for it. 1999 finds homeboy teeing up for his magnum opus which he would deliver with his next album. In that context, it can't help but feel like a slightly lesser work. At 70+ minutes it's a bit too long, which is a conundrum for most double albums, but there is still plenty to like here.

pretty iconic from the first song didn't finish

Classic album. Not always my thing. Total make out album tho

Album slopped off towards the end once the big hitters were played. The singles alone make this worthy of at least a 4.

Very disco vibes, good car listening I was vibing to this album so much that I missed my exit on the M25 3:4

Classic Prince and the album I personally connected with when I first heard it. Funny that this came out in the 80s, but I like the 90s, and this is still my favorite Prince albums. I'll take his advice to heart, party like it's 1999.

Psychedelic does not do this justice. I can't say that I love it, actually. A lot of the same sounds and the same progressions of notes as musical motifs that may have been revolutionary at the time, but being exposed to it for the first time now has me unimpressed. It is entirely possible that I would have been forever changed by this album had I heard it when it came out in 1982. Which is a weird release year given that the first track, 1999, is written as if it is a throwback to a better and simpler time. I actually do really enjoy DMSR. I suppose it is possible that the album changes after the first four songs. Automatic is a 10 minute bop All the Critics Love U in New York

Prince explores themes of dance, music, sex, and romance like no one else can, and no one else ever will.

Pretty good but the songs are too long. The first two songs are the best and then it kinda goes downhill from there.I still love prince though, but this isn’t his best work.

First 4 songs are gold. The long extended codas should be boring, but they are not. Lots of tasty guitar solos and cool meandering buried in the outros. Long outros usually are bad, but these actually add to the songs. Some songs got a little too long. Lots of great ideas. Some songs have sub-par lyrics, but great musical ideas. Doesn't feel like a 5, but maybe 4.5?

Starts with three really strong tracks. Obviously Prince is a great singer, songwriter, guitar player and arranger. This probably earns double album status, but not sure it’s consistent enough to earn the 5th star. Other Prince records have better deep cuts.

Would describe as sexual synth pop. Overall pretty good, some bangers. 7/10.

Lots of funk, way more sexual than I was anticipating. Good beat for running, except a few tracks.

A few bangers.

Prince is goofy.

It's a prince album, how could you go wrong? Dated via the heavy synthesizer use but still great.

A fantastic breakthrough album, this was Prince announcing his presence with greater sophistication as a musician and lyricist. While he certainly maintained the promiscuously charged themes of his earlier albums, "1999" moves into more figurative terrain and has more to say. The first half includes a series of signature tracks that would help define Prince as a pop sensation. The second half is more a mix of funky fare reminiscent of the earlier albums. It makes the whole LP a little uneven but clearly a marker for the ascent he was about to take.

4 stars for 1999, and the memories from Trentham Gardens new years eve party 1998

Contagieux et toujours aussi sensuel, les années 80 à leur paroxysme

Prince is very talented he raised the bar with some of his lyrics. I liked that he didn't seem to pull any punches when it came to the language.

Classic Prince 4.5

Lots to love here, catchy tunes, great synth sounds, fun production. Prince was the best

Iconic album Iconic artist but it starts with such a well known banger everything after that fell a little flat and went on a little too long

My fav prince song is little red corvette. I wasnt i to the long dragged out parts of the songs on this album. Still good prince.

Wonderful!

Own this one.

Dropped out of university today, and wanted something to help me have a good therapeutic cry about it. Prince yelling at me to party was... not that. Good album though!

Decent pop album, definitely had a huge influence on pop music of the time and added a lot of...sexual bluntness to music

Knowing what he’d go on to do I can’t rate this 5 but god damn this is a superb collection of songs specially the one two punch of the opening tracks

Great album from a pure genius. This is not really my favourite genre of music but I still fgind it easy to listen to with some good tracks and some great ones

Fun and groundbreaking, some parts fresh others very dated

first time listening have heard 1999 little red corvette d.m.s.r.

Great to listen to on a bike ride. Not sure I’d dig it as much if I was only listening. The last song is one for the ages - hilarious.

Really quite like. Some good tunes with some favourited.

DMSR is funky as shit. Automatic is good too. I thought this album sucked at first but now it’s good. Lady cab driver is also very good. I want to listen to this one again. Like I actually really like it. Even though I need to be more strict with my rating.

Personal Enjoyability (out of 40): 27 Consistency of Quality (out of 25): 16 Keeps Interest (out of 25): 17 Album Flow (out of 10): 8 Overall 68/100 ★★★★ Quick Review: Solid album with some fun songs - even the long songs get progressively better with the exception of the boring Automatic. Nothing is left to the imagination and I kinda like it.

Arranca con todo. Algunos temas son muy largos, pero igual, ahí va ese 4.

Some funky 80s synth bops. Prince is no doubt original. This album feels like he can't get his talent out fast enough. Ends up like a jumble of confusing songs that don't know what they're trying to accomplish. Not to say none of the songs land, just that it feels very multi-directional. Also, something needs to be said about the length. Most songs were not good enough to justify how long they went on. Just end them already. It gets annoying. 4/5

Not as good as purple rain but it still slaps hard af

I guess

Great album that starts with some great hits. Very 80s aesthetic, sounds, and vibe.

I may not be able to fully understand the tone that this album goes for, but one thing is for sure, I love the pop instrumentation and Prince's voice is amazing. Also sex 4/5

PRINCE FUCKS . absolutely legendary album !!! production, lyrics, vocals.... can't be beat. prince is one talented man. I WISH I could give this a 5 BUT automatic is WAY too long and it's a boner kill. SO I'm sorry it's 4 😭 but it is a classic nonetheless. favor rites : 1999, dmsr, lady cab driver, international lover ( ANY song that implies that prince is orgasming is obvi too notch) least faves : automatic bc u too dam long!!!!

Great Prince album. Not yet his nadir.

1999 is the fifth album by American singer-songwriter Prince, and the first with his band the Revolution. This breakthrough album was a critical and commercial success, propelling Prince to mainstream attention for years to come. Fun fact: 1999 was certified quadruple platinum in the US in 1999. Music on this album encompasses anything from Funk, R&B, pop, and dance. This was an influential album for the mid-80's vibes of synth-pop, R&B, and pop, but it also laid the foundation for later musical genres of electro, techno, and house. Prince was a genius with his music and I love listening to anything from his works. This album was what one would expect from Prince, but it is his breakthrough album so that made listening to it all the more special. You can't hate on Prince.

So epic. Prince can do it all. Sure he sometimes misses, but you wouldn't know it from this album. Four lady cab drivers out of five. 🚕🚕🚕🚕

This is the second Prince album I’ve been served from this list. Way better than sign o the times.

"Little Red Corvette" is of course a classic. Also liked "International Lover"

Nearly perfect

Prince made great music. Prince made bad music. 1999 is a blend of both. 3.5/5.

I like this album because it has a nice mix of upbeat and smooth

Lots of bangers on this one, a couple songs less so too, but... I guess I appreciate the influence. Probably more than the actual thing actually. But I dunno, I kinda just wanna give it the 4 and move on lol

Defines an era. Explores themes of partying but is underlined by struggles with lust and sexual desires. Lush vocals and beautiful song-writing. Some cool funky songs on here such as D.S.M.R. and Lady Cab Driver. Didn't know it was possible to experience what it's like to fuck Prince but ok.

A strong start kinda peters out at the end, but this is definitive early 80s Prince.

could be 5 but i get tired of the porn

Prince is a music god, and this album has one of my favorite songs of all time, "Little Red Corvette." BUT, this album highlights the only issue I have with Prince: the dude has a propensity for overlong songs. Out of 11 tracks, there are only two songs (!) that clock in at less than 5:00. That's nuts. Other than that, this album's fantastic. Wish I'd seen Prince in concert before he died. *sad trombone*

I enjoyed this all the way through way more than I thought I would. I get it now.

This has some fantastic, classic Prince songs, but it's a bit too long and not every song is a banger.

Not my era of pop but Prince is truly a king.

Pretty good!

very funky

Lekker album! Veel vette nummers, en typisch Prince.

This is Prince’s first great album, and its length fully justifies itself. Best Track: Little Red Corvette Rating: 7.5/10

Great album, definitively pushing the envelop for its time

Prince is daddy.

Solid Prince.

It’s Prince what else can I say

A breakthrough and a template that others are still following even today. Several absolutely 5⭐tracks, and a few that meander and are just too long.

Released in 1982... What? The hits off this album are timeless but many of the deep cut are definitely 80s synth pop. This is well produced album with Prince playing most of the instruments. I admire his talent but when found something interesting he over does it. You can here a lot of the soundscapes that eventually made Purple Rain such a great album but here I feel he was still figuring out how to use the electronic precussion and synth pads.

Listened Before? N Oh Prince. How we miss you. This album is an absolute dance masterpiece. That being said, I can't just listen to it for the most part. The singles are nice, and the music is unobtrusive but the songs are just LONG. If I were a hardcore Prince fan I would absolutely love it! Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Little Red Corvette

Good not great. I enjoyed the first half better. The second half sort of felt like kraftwerk on an aphrodisiac and was a bit much for me.

Despite my best efforts I can't seem to get Prince's music to leave much of an impression on me. I absolutely don't dislike him by any means but I just can never bring a Prince melody to mind. Maybe it's because I listened closer and with more intention, but I'm glad to say that this time was different. While it still didn't blow me away, I still had a great time listening. I didn't realize how explicit Prince got. He always struck me as more of an innuendo type of guy, but apparently not. All-in-all I don't mind this and I have full intention of listening again. 4

Catchy dance anthems

I thought I was going to love this based on how fun/interesting/sexy/impressive I've found other Prince records. I found most of the album enjoyable - 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let's Pretend We're Married, DMSR. But I found the squeaky synths of Delirious & Automatic distractingly grating. A lot of the lyrics are silly, and it definitely sounds *80's* in a way that not all Prince's music does (the DMSR groove would totally suit an 80s rap flow, but the guitar riff is v. timelessly Prince, e.g.) Definitely a fun one, but not necessarily the Prince album I'd pick to introduce someone to Prince.

Third favorite Prince albums, some good slap lines, but feel like 1999 is a rehash of Let’s Go Crazy.

Second Prince album at ~20 into the 1001. Great record, hard to believe this is from 1982.

My second Prince album reviewed. This record had a lot more familiar song on it than the first one I listened to (Sign 'O' the Times). This is the first album he recorded with his backing band, the Revolution. This album is sexually charged as hell! I feel like I've been ear fucked by Prince, and I'm ok with it! I could do without the 2 minute porno clips in the songs Automatic, and Lady Cab Driver, but we will chock that up to artistic expression. The Revolution were tight on this album, taking Prince's pop rock to another level! There are strong dance vibes on this, and also touches of R&B, and funk. The song Free is a great nod to the world issues surrounding people who are horribly oppressed by their governments, and preaches a message of peace and love. Overall, I really enjoyed this album! A lot of great songs on this one, and great beats throughout! Will definately listen again! Favourite songs: Little Red Corvette, D.M.S.R. 1999, Let's Pretend We're Married Least favourite songs: Delirious, Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) 4/5

Not quite Purple Rain, much better than Graffiti Bridge.

This album has several songs that made it into the mainstream, but the whole of it is another great effort from Prince. Oozing with the "Minnesota Funk" sound he helped pioneer and sexual undertones, this album does hold a special place in his catalog.

So, Prince's breakthrough? It is fabulous and Little Red Corvette is one of the greatest singles of all time, just not quite consistent across the album to be perfect.

Price was just feeling himself on this and the grooves kept going.

Prince is kind of unrivaled among artists for me listening to his full albums and counting the number of songs I recognize from radio play, that I had no idea where from him. Incredible talent, RIP

Eka kerta princeä! Taustahölänä meni.. vaikka yleensä yritän keskittyä...Ykköstä saa.... Heh... 6 AM kuunneltana uudestaan... Nelosta silmään.. Eräs parhaista kokemuksista.. sittenkin... Niin teki flip flop.. päälaelleen.. kuin artisti itse.. muutamana otteeseen.. heh muutamassa asiassa... heh....

Pretty awesome. Love the funky guitars. Some of it is a little too sexual at times, but the synths and drum kits used prove to be influencial even to this day with the resurgence of 80s pop style. Prince was an icon for a reason.

Lot of fun, played it twice. Surprised by length of some songs but it was all enjoyable

Really funky, I had a lot of fun listening and liked the themes explored and how reflective they were of the time - and how relevant they sometimes still feel today! Only criticism is that some of the songs overstay their welcome a bit.

great but not my fav. can appreciate tho

So many fantastic songs but a couple of duds keep me from giving it a full five stars

What an album to start this journey on! I love Little Red Corvette so much 😍

One of the best albums in Prince's career very danceable and with a lot of catchy choirs and melodies.

So much going on here. That's one thing that has always stuck out about Prince - how demands out of his bandmates, and just how dense his songs get.

Prince's perviness did him no favours. It distracted from the music. But, then, perhaps: the perviness was a part of what made the music what it was, i.e., amazing

This was filthier than the radio cuts would have led me to believe.

Awful production but the songs are classics, fantastic songwriting

This is really good, but not as good as Purple Rain. It could maybe have been a bit shorter...

Great all round. Good upbeat danciness etc. Great musicianship and mixes. Alot going on. Great guitar. Had I have listened with headphones my opinion may have changed.

An epic album of funk and songs that heralded what was to come

Jazz pop

It's Prince! Not his best but near the start.

A classic, featuring the eponymous 1999, the brilliant Little Red Corvette, and the hypnotic Automatic.

Hmmm, doesn't have the same epic highs as "Purple Rain", but on the other hand it feels a bit more consistent. Fave track - "1999" is iconic. "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" was great. "International Lover" is lols.

It’s Prince, it’s disco funk excellence, but not as good as Purple Rain or Sign o the times…

Not as good as Sign O The Times but no doubt he was a master of pop

Great but maybe shouldn’t have been a double album.

A storming opening to the album with 1999 (the track) and Little Red Corvette. Prince is a master of both songwriting and instrumental proficiency. The album tailed off a bit towards the end but on the whole, it felt like a joyous party.

Prince feels like he's in 99 on this one. Decades above and beyond his competition. Funky as fuck and fun. There is a reason Prince is goated. The mfer just says all the ny critics just love him. Ballsy as a new artist. But like draining threes against Charley Murphy this is a swish

An excellent collection of 11 fun dance hits that blend disco, funk, pop, rock, and synths really well. We start off with two of his famous songs, setting the mood for the rest of the album. They're catchy full of interesting instrumentation and hooks. The whole album is energetic, with an enthusiastic performance by Prince and his screeching guitar. Out of 11 songs, the only dud was "Free", and not just because of its lyrical subject matter. The major weakness is that most of the tracks are too long, especially since the tracks tend not to justify their lengths well. In fact, some try to incorporate annoying skits that I don't care for, but at least they don't disrupt the music much. On the bright side, they're long enough to put in a party mix. Favorites: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover

Great bop

Great album. Not his best but still fantastic.

Sexual banger

The pop hits are unimpeachable, his choppy rhythm guitar is fantastic there’s def some filler (Delirious is awful) and Lady Cab Driver may be my fave track. Incredible how much that sounds like a live funk jam given he played all the instruments on that track (and pretty much all on the album) himself

To think this was made 40 years ago - still sounds so fresh, super funky. Dare I say it, there are a couple of (what feel like) filler tracks, so I don't think it's his best album. Would give it 4.5/5 if I could ...

Opens with 2 absolute classics, brings the 80s synth and drum machine unashamedly to the party. Criticism would be that some tracks are overly long but they play happily in the background

Best album so far - maybe a sign of a misspent youth watching bad 80's teen films? 1999 is a guaranteed floor-filler, and there's something about the sentiment of 'party like the worlds about to end' that revs up any dance floor. perfect contrast to Little Red Corvette with its slow synths. LOVE

Great album with the exception of one song (Something in the Water). 4/5

The good parts were incredible but some of the songs are just too much. Trim some of the songs down and it’s probably 5 stars.

Funky, starts well. In the genre it is a great album

This is such a great album. The songs are playful, sexy, funky, danceable, and just so much fun to listen to. I don't think I fully appreciated this music back in 1982. In my defense, I was 11 years old and into, I don't know, Duran Duran or something. Listening to him now though, I can see how Prince is really a once in a lifetime talent. This was a pleasure to hear. Fave Songs: Little Red Corvette, 1999, International Lover, Delirious, D.M.S.R., All the Critics Love U in New York

Aika eroottista ähkintää! 4/5

Huh ku pistää hikoiluttaa tää seksuaalinen energia -- tai sit se on helle. Anyway, Prinssi pistää menemään! 4/5

A lot better than I thought I am more of a fan than before!

Ahem, yes indeed. Listening to a Prince album like this is never a boring experience. It's got some damn funky grooves that probably need to be heard on the dancefloor in a sweaty night club at high volume to be fully appreciated. At home, at a moderate volume, it's still very listenable pop music. I'm liking 80's music a lot more now than I did years ago. And I wonder how many people heard the song '1999' during the millennium new years eve celebrations?

How funky do you want your pop perfection?

Klassísk plata. Margt á henni sem var á undan samtíðinni. Nokkrir bangerar. Eitt sem lætur mig minnast Eddie Murphy í eldrauðu leðurdressi. Those were the days.

funky and cool vibes. Very sexual and explicit at times.

Despite the length of the album and most of the songs, 1999 was an intriguing listen throughout. Liked half a lot and the rest were decent. The music was a bit quirky and not as bold nor engaging as Purple Rain. Still an essential listen.

Ik ben niet zo'n grote Prince fan, maar zijn liedjes zijn goed om aan te horen. Het blijft een eigenaardige zanger, maar zijn nummers klinken wel heel goed. ****

Excellent, and unlike everyone else, I quite like the second half.

listened to this a few weeks ago

I was familiar with Prince but haven't heard a full album from them before. Great music, really enjoyed it. 1. Let's Pretend We're Married 2. All the Critics Love U in New York 3. Delirious

The first half of this album is incredible. Funky but understated guitar over 80s synths and a drum machine the drive the songs on. The songwriting on sides 1 & 2 is also brilliant. Six, seven & eight minute long tracks fly by without coming close to getting boring. The quality of the tunes drops off a bit on sides 3 & 4, but the style remains consistent. I never realised 1999 was a protest song against nuclear weapons, which adds an extra level of interest and appreciation. Some of the other lyrics pure filth. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: 1999 Date listened: 28/07/22

Great listen, some really classic stuff here. An iconic Prince album. The thing that knocks it down for me is, I don't know, I just can't quite fully get on the Prince train - I wouldn't listen to this just because I wanted to. Certainly enjoyed it though.

it's good.

Good times.

Classic bop

Essentially perfect.

Bussin: 1999 and LRC are obv. classics. Delirious is much fun too. Sussin: Automatic was repetitive and boring...it's almost 10 mins long. Something in the water lyrics are fine, but the "music" is trash. Lady Cab Driver is smut with bizarre lyrics and a woman faking an orgasm in the background the entire time. It's awful. Vibe: Despite a few missteps, there a lot of fun interesting stuff to love on here. Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?

Excellent. Supremely funky, subversive, very naughty, and way ahead of its time.

Rockstar shit.

I really enjoyed this album because although it got repetitive after each song I continued to find myself dancing along and eventually singing along and I just loved the vibes.

Couple of crackers in there, but overall somewhat disappointed

Something in the water… *screams*

Whew, what a party! This got... real weird there for a bit, but overall this album contains some absolute bangers. Favourites: the first 4 songs, more or less in that order.

Obviously a couple of cracking tracks on here. The rest is pretty good too, only one or two below average. All the usual Prince style that you’d expect that makes it obviously him.

I expected a little more innovation considering his calibre, but I do respect him finding himself in this decade with all the pop and hip hop competition from the time. I do wish he incorporated more of his virtuoso guitar playing into his songwriting though, since he was one of the best guitarists ever.

Funky, energetic, nothing I've expected from Prince based on my prior experience. Wouldn't go so far as to say I'm taken aback, but I I'm glad I got to know this record. Highlight: Delirious

Solidna porcja popu, który życia mi nie zmienił, ale zdecydowanie jest na poziomie akceptowalnym czwóreczkowo. Prince nie bez powodu był popularny.

-All the songs are good enough, just some are really repetitive, just saying the title or the main chorus line over and over again -The line about "party like it's 1999" reminds me of Weird Al's line from Amish Paradise where he says "Tonight we're gonna party like it is 1899." I assume Al is referencing this song or both are referencing a common phrase from the time -"Little Red Corvette" is cool, it's obviously one of Prince's more popular tunes -"D.M.S.R." was my other favorite with "Little Red Corvette" It just seemed fun and catchy. -Sone of the songs towards the end of the album have really quiet vocals for some reason -It sounds like I hated this album, but I enjoyed it lol

It funks, it rocks, it's a classic.

Pop-rock noventero muy animado. Un 4.

Dated, but good

This is the first time I've ever listened to Prince and I think I may have heard a song by him here and there. Otherwise I just knew about him through popular culture. I liked it... but it's also too damn long. In recent days I've gotten so many albums that are great but just have too much filler. Easily could have cut down quite a bit from this album and achieve the same. Nonetheless it's quite fun and funky.

The instrumentation, lyrics, and voices make a great album. DMSR.

Lovely to listen back to. Properly classic

Prince is to 1980s party music what SHACK is to child snatching - the sexiest in the business.

Very good

Great album, very ahead of its time

Some of the songs were too poppy for me but overall I liked it. The last song was my favorite

An almost all-time classic. A bit uneven, and at times sprawling, but the highs are glorious.

This album starts out on fire but I think there’s a bit of filler in the latter part. Still it’s a great combo of funk, soul, pop and good old rock and roll.

yo prince va hårt???!!

Prince made bangers. It’s been known

He has such a recognizable style and voice. I feel seduced by Prince a little bit, it really does spiral into some real sexual songs. There's definitely some great songs, though some went on a bit long.

This is one of those things that was always there... never considered myself a Prince fan and yet lots of tracks have wheedled into my life. And those first three, come on...1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious (which I only recalled from a Cheech and Chong film) are all classics. so maybe I am just an avid listener if not a fan.

God, I'm such a prude. Felt a little uncomfy with how Prince was singing to me LOL. Standout tracks: Little Red Corvette & Something In The Water (Does Not Computer)

Funky and enjoyable, with some weirder moments here and there. Very long, and probably doesn't need that length.

Enjoyed this a lot. Love the future-proofing that Prince deployed with 1999. Not sure Busted will do so well with Year 3000

It was Prince! No complaints.

What a weird, funky, horny album. I like that even though a lot of the music is synth-heavy dance music, none of it feels overly processed and robotic like the majority of pop and club music today. There's an organic quality and an off-kilter energy that runs throughout the album. The songs feel alive and unpredictable. I didn't know Prince was so filthy and funny. I can't get enough of that spoken word portion in "Lady Cab Driver" where he has sex with the cab driver and dedicates his thrusts - at first to personal resentments and societal ills and eventually getting abstract as he melts into an orgasm. Really hilarious, strange stuff. And wow, what a performance on the closer, “International Lover.” It’s a supremely cheesy song and he does some kind of character or parody on it but he has incredible range as a singer.

I love prince and I really like this album doesn’t have all of his best songs on it but it’s still a super good album except for a couple songs at the end

The funk is forever, but the keys sound a bit dated. Of the big hits, only "Little Red Corvette" really works for me. "DMSR" is a plus-plus track and side 2 – especially the moderated, non-hits "Free" and "Lady Cab Driver" and "All the Critics Love You" and "International Lover" – are strong adds, better than I remember. 3.8 but rounding up because of the body of work.

That's a proper party album. Another artist I've grown to be a bigger fan of over time and appreciate what he's done.

Zašt men nitko nije reko da je Prince ovolko dobar?

Kinda front-loaded but still an amazing album Fav Tracks: "Little Red Corvette" "1999"

Great first half. Less great 2nd half. But overall very good

As the opening strains of the album started creeping out of my speakers, my initial reaction was very negative. Those super dated synths are just so cringe. But the thing about Prince is that he's brilliant and, by the end of the record, I was just bopping along with him, enjoying the heck out it. Princes music isn't timeless. I is, however, perfectly timely. Every album seems to be a perfect distillation of the cutting edge trends in music at that exact moment. And then Prince, being Prince, takes everything up several notches with his immaculate musicianship and consummate showmanship. I'm shocked, but this is an effortless 4-star album after all.

Fun album...never fully appreciated Prince until the last few years. Super musicianship with fun poppy tunes. 3.5/5

very cool and interesting quite funky i like

I mean, it's a classic with banger after banger. It's Prince. What else is there to say? So many sex songs. Again...it's Prince. How could you expect anything less? I guess this makes me a basic bitch, but I love 1999 (my fave track). I wish we could party like it's 1999 because partying like it's 2022 usually means lots of lonely drinking and masking up. #COVIDproblems Anyway, thank you, Prince, for making my COVID-19 experience a COVID-1999 experience, even if it was only for a little while.

1999 - super catchy and fun, with enveloping synths and wicked guitar lines. the odd vocals near the end give off a Ween sensibility, which makes sense when you consider how much the band was inspired by Prince Little Red Corvette - the chorus makes up immensely for the subpar verses, with powerful background vocals and a glimmering synth-funk instrumental. Delirious - a bit less grandiose than the last two tracks, with interesting synth sounds that elevate a cute song about the excitement of love Let's Pretend We're Married - Prince's performance does a lot for this track, paired with the dark and bass-heavy instrumentation that still carries the shimmering quality of the other tracks. The length of the songs doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, as the band does a good job of keeping the motifs engaging. D.M.S.R. - punchy and funky, very carefree Automatic - i like the driving call-and-response with the guitar and synths, and i live for the one accented bass note that comes around every phrase. it does feel repetitive in the first third, and most of the tracks so far fall into the trap of greatly benefiting from a tonal and/or sonic switch-up. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) - frantic drums and off-putting synth lines that grow into a psychedelic heartbreak ballad. I don't care for Prince's spoken passages on this track, and the odd sensibility of the song as a whole isn't my favorite. Free - revisit Lady Cab Driver - yeah it's good, instrumental break has a lot of good shredding and walls of synths International Lover - a passionate closer

An hour straight of dance bangers. Killer grooves throughout, with a healthy dose of shredding here and there, when necessary. Favorite Tracks: "1999", "Little Red Corvette", "Let's Pretend We're Married", "D.M.S.R.", "Lady Cab Driver", "International Lover"

I didn't know how raunchy this album would be. The first four tracks are the best. Arguably too good, as the rest of the record doesn't seem to hit the same highs. I'm not going to go into detail because The Purple One needs no explanation. My one gripe is that some of the songs were a little too long, though.

the electronic 80s sound of funk is too synthetic. I prefer the 70's warm sound. But Prince's song writing and coolness is endless.

Funky. Calling this record "horny" is a gross understatement. A little indulgent in certain spots, but if you get caught into the groove, it's tough to shake it. Favorite tracks: "Little Red Corvette", "Delerious", "Let's Pretend We're Married"

On the one hand, I can see what so many people absolutely love Prince. On the other, it's just not for me. I can get into the most intense/best songs like the title track and Lady Cab Diver, but so many track just have nothing to hook me in.

A high 4 for sure!

Very 1980s sound for 1999. Heavy synth, voice effects, electro drum beats. Funky at times such as dsmr. Strong lead and backup vocals including duet to start 1999. Lyrics focus on sex, wealth and parties with lurking sub text of violence, destruction, end of days. 1999, Delerious, DSMR, little red corvette

Not bad, some songs were a lil long

This is a fun one! I like it

Lovely stuff

An album that evoked the future, now the past, but lives perfectly in the time it was created. Prince exists outside of our earthly constructs, even when he was on earth. I'd give it 5 stars, but I'm reserving that for Purple Rain, which I assume is on this list.

Classic. not as good as Purple Rain, but pretty damn good.

It's Prince! That's a statement by itself. Prince set the bar in his own variety of extremely suggestive funk. It is undeniably extremely fun and catchy. All of the radio hits retain are just as fun as ever, and songs that are less often remembered, like Something in the Water, are just as fun as the radio hits. Perhaps I'm more prudish than most, but I didn't see the "genius" in the sex obsession in Prince's music. I just felt like the music was shallow, approaching lecherous. But even if don't consider this to be a good moral code, you can still enjoy the album intensely. I did.

Prince is awesome, but (just one critique) this album could have been shorter. Some of the songs get a bit repetitive after minute 6 or so. Still, he's one of the greatest all-around musicians, songwriters, producers, performers, and cool guys ever.

Not his very best. But it’s still Prince!

I had forgotten how many of these songs I had heard before. My sister was big into Prince for a while, so I imagine she played this tape in our room. I never really got into it at the time, but I should have appreciated his musicianship. I mean... WOW. The first three tracks are definite hits that were played over and over on the radio, but the others are just as solid. Truly a talent, gone too soon.

There's a lot to like about this album. I only knew the hits and I definitely enjoyed most of the rest. It's a little longer than I think it needs to be and some of the lyrics are just awkward ("I wanna f*** the taste out of your mouth"?? Really?). Favorite tracks: 1999 (even though the synths are a little dated, it's still a classic. I really liked the extended outro that you don't get to hear in the single), Little Red Corvette, Delirious, D.M.S.R. (just makes you want to get up and dance...unfortunately, I'm too lazy and you don't want to see me dance anyway), and Lady Cab Driver (good funky song, but I could do without the sex moaning).

This needs multiple listens imo. Really enjoyed a lot of the instrumentals. 1999: Leo pointing meme I know this song Delirious: Brody Quest Vibes DMSR: did daft punk sample this? 6:05 bass drum beat Automatic: Leo pointing meme 2 electric boogaloo Biggest complaint is that songs are very long and not enough changes for my personal tastes, this is fine on some songs like international lover, but not on automatic

This album is a build-up towards the most uncomfortable moan. Jokes aside is it possible not to groove listening to this ? no

Pretty good! No songs I disliked but nothing that stood out too much. Would definitely listen again!

This is how you use drum machines properly. Never dull, doesn't drag, chilled and fun through. The model of many an imitation, but it still stands. Slightly more adventurous instrumentals may have suited the lyrical edge, but not the mood.

He ain't MJ but he's pretty good.

Making sleazy and creepy cool - the Purple One just fucking fucks. That one two three punch of the first three tracks is kissing your neck, whispering in your ear and tickling your arsehole... and he smuggled a dick on the cover. Best Tracks: 1999; Little Red Corvette; Delirious

Funky and still fresh. The beginning of the album is a little poppier and more casual-listener-friendly, but this still sparkles today.

I dunno. It’s fun and it’s Prince.

4.1 + Starts with two mega-hits that endure on pop radio - "1999", "Little Red Corvette." Both bangers. The middle is a quirky blend of synthesized funk with some extended jams that include interesting monologues, often chock-full of sex talk. "Lady Cab Driver" is a curious one - he's listing various injustices that anger him while pounding that pussy. The album kind of ends with a whimper. Some highs, some lows, some confusing parts. It's colorful and varied and funky and alive.

This would be a five star album if it weren't so bloated. Still a fantastic, classic album, but it really starts to drag as it goes on...

a step down from purple rain but still real good

Loved it. A couple that surprised me with how on the nose they were mixed in with classics.

This album is the embodiment of most of 80s pop. It's got simple drum loops, an infectious "dance feeling", and vocals that more or less fit the theme. There's a bit of a looming feeling in the words throughout the album, but the feel-good backing rarely dwells on it. Favorite track: Delirious

Soulful, intimate rock.

Good album, not entirely my thing however. Also the more eccentric lyrics, such as the panicked woman at the end of D.M.S.R., definitely left me confused and wondering what the intent was.

Synthesisers and drum machines with Prince rocketing towards his peak. What's not to love?

It's not my favorite Prince album, but that doesn't make it any less of a classic. I've always thought MJ was overrated anyways. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11.

Very good. Especially 1999

I’ve never listened to this record the whole way through before, and it was (mostly) a blast. Compared to other albums of his from this era, this one was maybe a little underdeveloped. A good number of tracks are essentially riffs that stretch out longer than necessary - possibly awesome live, but this is a record. I prefer the radio edit of the title track, not included here, which cuts out the very beginning and end of the song (which nobody wants to hear). Another good double LP that would be a killer single LP.

In 1999, I did not party as much as should have to this

Alcuni pezzi su tutti secondo me svettano comunque, tipo Lady Cab Driver o Something In The Water. Comunque 4 pieno.

overall good for that era.

I can't stop thinking about the number of people danced to the second half of this album and the number of children conceived while second half of it were playing! Sexy, genius, sexy, elaborated, sexy and greatly produced..

All the critics love U in New York probably my favourite track. Great album.

Yeah Baby!

Would be 3.5 if I could do half stars

Probably to 3 of Prince albums

1999 into Little Red Corvette is great 1-2. Delirious is a lot of fun, cool album

Pop-rock noventero muy animado

Nada mal!

Fresco, personal, talentoso.

Les 2 premieres sont des classique et l’album se merite un 4 pour cela. Et aussi pour son facteur de reecoute. Cependant les tounes s’allongent a la fin et l’album de 1h10 c’est beaucoup d’ecoute pour du drum machine.

A masterpiece of early-to-mid-80s, funky R&B.

Was an amazing album for the time, but the song length no longer fits with modern music standards.

Trip down nostalgia lane. Love the funk! Some songs were much longer than I remember.

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 11/20 Innovation: 17/20 Bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 14/20 =70 Lovely stuff

Little red corvette!!

Maybe the best three-song start to any album ever? Don't think I ever appreciated how prolific and talented Prince was when he was alive.

For lange sanger

Good album. Much better than the last one I listened to. Lots of good dancey tunes, some odd lyrics but that's expected.

PRINCE

Is good

The first of an incredible run of albums..

Some decent songs. Not my favorite Prince record

Good one, many interesting and new songs I didn't know earlier

Vanvittig pop, funky, lidt rocket, måske en anelse for jammet til sidst

Banger

A classic, king of Minnesota.

Need a re listen, first couple tracks are the strongest (1999, little red corvette)

Not overly exciting today. Not a bad album, just more generic 80s Prince fluff. Wouldn't be bothered to listen again, but wouldn't complain either.

Synthy and quiet sexual...some v long songs. 1999 and little red courvette are big hits

not the best prince album imo. i feel like the songs are soooo long and not that many bangers

Despite it all, I've never been much of a Prince fan. Sacrilegious perhaps, but I think we all get a couple 'big artists' that we're allowed some ambivalence on. He's practically a de-facto face on the Mount Rushmore of pop icons of the late 20th century and I've never really quite grokked with it. The best parts of this album are, surprisingly, the same parts that have aged the worst. 'Delirious', a track so synth-soaked in that brightly-commercial 80s way, is so wonderfully retro-twee now. The album feels like an attempt at a sound for the optimistic future that never materialized. Like that funky little sound on 'D.M.S.R' is fun and playful and kinda dorky in a charming way. Conversely, at its worst it's so sexually self-indulgent. There's that moaning, sweaty theme throughout that just ends up feeling and sounding masturbatory. Feels like Prince is doing this whole Steely Dan thing, but with more discomforting lyrical sleaze and less of that flowergram romance. What the fuck is going on in 'Lady Cab Driver', for example? An otherwise catchy 80s beat falls to the awkward vinyl posturing of some insecure masculine posturing. Fav tracks: Delirious, D.M.S.R.

#986. Despite that fact that Prince took himself extremely seriously, his music is best enjoyed if you do not take it seriously at all. 3/5: goofy

The recording of this is pretty shit. Not sure if I had a bad version, but there was lots of clipping. Music is nice and funky - super horny.

I rue the day drum machines were invented. IMO they take all the life and soul out a song. Couple of nice hits here. Otherwise, a bunch of overlong, lifeless drivel. I like a lot of Prince’s ouvre, but this album’s popularity and apparent significance baffle me.

izrazito napaljen album, još jedan u nizu »semks hehe«. no dosta zabavan. premda je dug (70 minuta), nije mi smetalo, solidno je bilo preslušati. u stvari nešto bolji od »purple rain«, njegovog albuma koji sam slušao prije ovoga, razmjerno nedavno. izdvojio bih drugu stvar (»little red corvette«) kao najjaču. sve skupa, evo jedne jače trojčice...

Soulful pop rock at its finest.

A crates egg, great hits but overall a bit tedious as too much in the same groove

D.M.S.R was my favorite

Fun album. Nostalgic of listening to the radio with mum and dad growing up.

BANGERR honestly

A few decent songs but most of them felt too long and fairly uninspired, like someone was throwing a party for themselves and I just happened to be there. Maybe it would seem better with multiple listens—I love the songs I've heard a ton (1999 & Little Red Corvette).

The first half of the album is really good with songs like 1999 and little red corvette. In my opinion I feel like it gets weirder and kind of falls flat compared to the beginning of the album in the 2nd half with songs like something in the water.

Må jo nesten være tidenes mest horny album

I was surprised that I liked the beginning and the end. Lady cab driver and all the critics love, New York, so fun. I liked international level too. Sexy, fun, All together, good time spent.

Es un álbum animado siento que sería ideal para bailar es una fiesta, literalmente es de los 80's, me gusta la combinación de diferentes sonidos en este álbum y como predominan sonidos electrónicos

I feel like I accidentally summoned incubus Prince on Halloween.

Not really my kind of jam, and then it was the longer it progresses. This was so sexy, orgasmic. Love the moans and the hard guttural screams. I listened to this with my mouth slightly ajar, almost like I'm getting close.

a very good album as a whole, im not sure im ever going to listen to its tracks on their own tho. fav song: let’s pretend we’re married

Le roi de la pop queer, mais peut-être pas son meilleur album

He’s obviously a genius, but a lot of this is just not really my scene. Harsh 80’s synths, and so many sex noises Jesus Christ. I feel like I need someone to explain more context. Obv inspired lots of other greats, esp the singing

Pre Y2K funk

Music doesn't vibe with me at the moment.

All in all a good album with many cool hooks, however the length of many of the songs tend to be a wee bit long.

Crazy to drop this then Purple Rain

Prince is an icon, but this sounds so very dated. And horny.

This album seems like it would be the sound track to Beverly Hills Cop.

I respect him

Starts so strong but tails off. A little disappointing in the end.

Really good instrumentation and vocals but it just didnt do it for me. I feel like the singles stood out too much from the rest od the album's content, making it feel weak

Prince is so hard for me to rate. He was very talented, and I can see and hear the talent. He just went too much into a pop sound for me. I would have loved to hear Prince go bluesy. 5 for talent 2 for how much I like it, 3.5, goes to 3 since there isn't anything I would own or download, which is a requirement for me to give something a 4 or 5.

Fine album! Not my cup of tea.

Started really strong but has better albums

Little red corvette 3:5

A pretty solid album from Prince with excellent guitar work and some very funky synths. Unfortunately, doesn’t quite hit the heights of his next album and some songs can tend to go on too long. Overall, decent.

muito bom!! confesso que não estou muito familiarizada com o prince, acabei descobrindo músicas incríveis dele.
