Prince fucked my ear for 1 hour and 10 minutes. The first half of this album is amazing and then it drags towards the end.

Starts off with a bang BANG, and then just kinda drags on without much intrigue. Airplane sex, though.

Purple is the color body fluids glow under black light. In that context it makes a LOT of sense why it was Prince's signature color. This one starts strong and kinda fades imo, though the fun this dude had singing about banging is always fun.

Tonight I'm Gonna Party Like It's 1999 1001 Albums Generator 20 (04/30/2025) 1999 is the album that propelled 5'2 Prince into stardom and is largely responsible for introducing the Minneapolis Sound brand of funk into the mainstream consciousness. Defined by funky synth basslines and programmed drums, Minneapolis Sound was most popular in the 1980's, but it continues to influence artists today such as Bruno Mars and Usher. Prince is an artist who has somehow, to this point, escaped my grasp other than the fantastic song Purple Rain, so I was excited to finally listen to a full album by the man who would become O(+>. First things first, this album is horny as fuck. I feel like I just had sex with Prince just by listening to this thing. Look at the lyrics for Automatic, Lady Cab Driver, and International Lover to start. Anyone that claims that music is "too sexual" nowadays should listen to this album right here. The sound of this album is also very funky. The only other Minneapolis Sound album I have heard is Janet Jackson's Control, and this has the exact same specific types of busy programmed drum beats with lots of fills and synth basslines. The sexual swagger exuding from this little guy can be so strong that it can almost feel like over-compensation, but I'm sure that he really was gettin down and dirty. The album starts with its two most well known songs. The first song, the title track, is the most popular song on the album. Opening with Prince's voice with a robotic filter over it and based on the paranoia at the time that the world would end in 2000, Prince asks one simple thing of the listener: party like it's 1999. In the world of this song, the world is at war, and Prince chooses to dance instead of die. This is the strongest song on the album, and honestly it's not really close. Unfortunately, the second track, Little Red Corvette, is much less exciting. Prince metaphorically describes a one-night stand by comparing it to a ride in a sports car. It's clever, but the music is a bit placid and Prince croons his way through the verses until the pretty good chorus. The guitar solo is nice too. I know this song is popular, but it's unfortunately not quite as good as I was hoping. The rest of this album is quite variable in quality. Delirious features a very silly synth that takes away from the sexiness of the song. I kept getting reminded of that guy on Reddit that listened to Cbat during sex to feel the rhythm lol. Prince's energy is good, but I just can't with this instrumental. D.M.S.R. brings the quality way back up with perhaps the funkiest song on the whole album. I also felt seen when he said "All the white people, clap your hands on the four now". Thanks Prince. Free is a dreadfully cheesy ballad about being grateful for what you have or whatever, while Lady Cab Driver is a wonderfully cheesy boogie about, erm, intercourse with the titular lady cab driver. The final song is strong and has a fun little bit of theming with the whole "Prince Air" schtick. Overall, Prince's 1999 is an album that defines the period in which it was created. In doing so, it also intrinsically ties itself in the cliches of the time, making it hard to appreciate as a modern listener. While I can appreciate the influence this has, I don't find myself coming back to it in whole, in spite of some really strong individual moments. 3/5. Favs: 1999 D.M.S.R. Not what I expected from Prince, not much guitar, some interesting songs but 3/5.

I'm not one to complain about length on an album but seriously another Prince album that's over an hour long. I do like some of this album, the title track, "Delirious" & "Little Red Corvette" are great but Prince definitely has a problem with dragging out songs way longer than they need to be 7/10 Favourite: Delirious Least Favourite: D.M.S.R.

Insanely horny

This is the only Prince album I know well. It starts brilliantly in the first two songs and then proceeds to bump down slowly slowly towards a slightly boring conclusion wirh a few higher bounces.

I liked this for the most part. The actual song parts were good, catchy, listenable. But then they all draged on with annoying looping instrumentals that I just wanted to skip (and honestly did on a couple).

Learned that in some countries, there was a 12" version of this released, rather than the double 12" we heard. That would have probably made for a better listen. Some of the very long songs on this felt like dance remixes that would have been better off as singles. The hits were hits but the rest of the album dragged.

Some amazing music. Especially for 1982. Did I hear the world's first industrial song? Too many songs are too damn long though. To the point where they are just plain masturbatory. Also, way, way to much filler.

Never been the biggest fan of Prince, like the hits are alright and the rest has cool moments, but it's just not my type of music. Didn't appreciate all of the moaning, but whatever, that's his style.

I fully expected to go five stars on this one, but I guess an album that starts with 1999 and Little Red Corvette can only go downhill after that. Delirious is still pretty great. Everything after that, not so much. Prince had a tendency to go off the rails with the hyper sexuality, and that’s a problem here. Some of the songs get overly repetitive, too. I’m tho king Lady Driver mostly. I remember the name because that’s all he sang for half the song. I still dig Prince and was really disappointed when I didn’t love this album. But, truth be told, I was kind of glad when it was over.

Curse you Prince for creating some maestral pop composition and then following them up with a crap ton of dance fillers. ⭐⭐⭐

Prince has a massive discography which means that you're almost guaranteed to find something you like. It also means you likely to find everything else as well, which sadly this album felt like for me. Some stand out tracks, and some that just didn't work for me.

If I listen funk I would like it sweaty and edgy. 1999, and whole production from Prince, doesn't fit this approach. This is just too clean, almost sterile. Anyone can appreciate amazing skills of Prince as superb multi-instrumentalist and as a artist doing his stuff only on his own way. This demands 3 starts throughout I don't like this album.

The first 3-4 songs were absolutely brilliant, but then it went flat again—until that final track, International Lover, an excellent piece of art. Still, it lacked the guts or charisma to raise the whole album to a 4-star rating.

Thought I'd enjoy it more. It started off with some hits, but fell off fast.

I was not a Prince fan when he was popular. I've grown to respect him over the decades since. Hearing this album, there were times it was a 5 (first 3-4 songs), then somewhere around Automatic, it was really losing it form me. It's still not an album I would ever reach for, so it can't get over a 3. But I respect it's existence in this list. One should hear this album before one dies.

Prince is talented. But I got tired of the 9-minute songs of him screwing around with cheesy lyrics. Some great songs are on this record, but here's how I would rank it. -0.5 stars for lyrics. There's great stuff( All the critics love you in New York, delusional, free) but also a boat load of crap. -0.5 for catchiness. Again, some are amazing, and some are super boring. -1 for instrumental quality. Great guitar, and drums. -1 for innovation. You hear Prince in a lot of newer artists. -0 for a good mix throughout the album. Too much filler. Overall: A well-deserved three stars. 6/10

Upbeat and weird like no one else.

Prince is an icon, great musician, composer and all around pop star. Really capture the fun 80's post disco dance sound with fun sexy ideas and a unique childlike wonder approach to building up environments in a song. Celebrating good times in light of the bad. However, on a less deeper level of listening this shit is 80's pop cheese. Nothing stands out. For that look to Prince's earlier music for true alpha musician prowess.

I’m a fan of a lot of Prince’s work, but this has never been one of my favorite full listens in his catalog. 1999 contains some funky, anthemic and overall outstanding highlights of 80’s pop including the title track, Little Red Corvette and DMSR. But it feels like a few of these tracks outstay their welcome. Whats more for me is that Prince would go on, very shortly after this album, to up his production and writing game at large significantly. An example for me is the “I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth”. While that, undoubtedly, gets the narrator’s point across, within 5 years Prince would be approaching sex and relationships in a much more layered and mature way. A song like If I Was Your Girlfriend shows him writing from multiple perspectives, one of which proclaiming “We don’t have to make children to make love, and we don’t have to make love to have an orgasm. Your body’s what I’m all about.” TL;DR: Solid album, very high highs, but he would go on to make much more compelling work.

why was this album 10 years long

Well, this definitely deserves a spot on the list! Even if it’s not my style of music, I still recognize his genius. And I don’t mind a listen every now and then :)

For the longest time I thought the title song was actually made in 1999 because they played it so much on the radio that year. I always wondered why the sound was so dated and clearly not 1999 at the time. Anyway, having learned it was released in 1982 makes sense. Probably right at the beginning or in the thick of the synthy 80s sound. Listen, I know prince is incredibly talented, and I've even grown to like some of his hits like Red Corvette and When Doves Cry over the years. But the sound just doesn't speak to me as an overall rule. So it's tough to appreciate a full album. Songs like Delierious are just straight goofy. Then again, there are some slept on funky gems here like DMSR that I might add to a playlist at some point. I just can't see this as an album I'd groove to on the regular, not my scene. Prince songs are best enjoyed here and there on the radio for me.

Fun and funky. Not as funky as 'Dirty mind' nor as euphoric as 'Purple rain' but a Prince is a Prince.

Definitely some fun songs and you can feel how this would have been a really unique and game-changing album at the time. Not my favorite style, but I do love some funky basslines and Prince does have an impressive voice. Not really for me, but a fun album.

Funky, liked it more than I expected.

It is impressive that Prince played most all the instruments you hear on this. The guy had some chops! Also impressive that this was recorded analog in 1982, lots of studio trickery going on. This is another case where I was really only able to listen through this once so couldn’t get a good handle on a lot of the deep cuts. All these hour-plus albums are killing me! Best songs: “Little Red Corvette”, “D.M.S.R.”, “Free” Biggest head scratcher: how “Delirious” was a top 10 charting single with that annoying synth lead I will rate this a 3 because I know Purple Rain will be coming later on.

Has anyone this openly horny ever been as widely beloved as Prince? I had no idea this was his breakout album. "Little Red Corvette" is a great song, and apparently was the first Prince song most people heard. I liked the album better on second listen but still feel like it's mostly emblematic of the 80s Prince sound that I never really could get into overall. This, for me, doesn't touch Love Symbol, but I would listen again.

Prince is another artist that I’ve never really gotten into. Obviously a super talented musician, but there was always something that made me hesitate to jump into the Prince fandom. That being said I actually liked this more than I expected. I was familiar with the singles but the later tracks were more enjoyable than I expected going into this one.

This is such a great example of my view of Prince's music. Some phenomenal songs that are in a genre I do not like and a bunch that are flat, dull and do not appeal to me. I can easily see how someone who likes pop and R&B and soul would rate this a 4 or 5. I almost went with a 4, as some songs are that good. Just not enough for me.

Was dreading this, but it doesn't seem to suffer from the usual guitar histrionics of other Prince fare. He seems at his best when doing electronics, rather than showing off his virtuosity on a multitude of instruments. The first couple of tracks are great pop, and then this settles into more straightforward 'good' pop songs. They bounce along without causing much fuss, but I wouldn't go out of my way to play most of them.

What great way to start an album! It's got to bangers to start, but as with most prince, he was an amazing musician and knew what he wanted but I more of a hits guy, but the album had some surprises! Definitely liked it more than I thought but still not better than purple rain!

I like the idea (and lore) of Prince more than the pure listening to Prince. The only super bowl I ever attended was in Miami when he did Purple Rain in the pouring rain...that was sick.

I'm walking down the street and I can hear a commotion. It's a party in a giant purple mansion. Loud music playing, people fucking everywhere. Everyone is screaming and crying for Prince. PRINCE, PRINCE, PRINCE!!!! Prince sees me and seductively asks if I'd like to come in. I do. I want to be in the Prince party. I've always wanted to be in the Prince party! But I just can't. Too buttoned up maybe? Not horny enough? I get that Prince is great but for some reason I have never fully understood or connected to the music. There will be a song here or there I keep in the rotation, I think mainly from his self titled album. I asked my Mom what they thought of him when he was coming up and her answer was simple, "Pervert". After hearing "I want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" I get it. I'm glad that Prince existed and maybe some day I'll make it to the party.

I really love the premise of little red corvette: that Prince, a lascivious sex alien, thinks this girl needs to tone down her horniness a little. She must have been so confused. You’re telling me I’M too sexual prince? You’re wearing leather pants and a mesh blouse! You’re gyrating right now as we speak! Anyway, my favorite prince songs are when he wants to fuck a girl so bad it makes him emotional. I think even us white stiffs can relate to that feeling. In general, I like Prince more than most pop (1999 and little red corvette stand out) but it’s still pop, and thus a little formulaic over the course of an album. The unanimously upbeat grooves feel like they are really designed to be played in the background of a dance party, rather than listened to by yourself, so don’t lend themselves too well to this exercise. Most lot of these songs have a real ASS on them too, with these sort of standard riffs ending w overlong, repetitive outros. But I guess for prince’s tastes that’s probably fitting.

Very pleased The album titled track is ridiculously cool. Little red corvette (possibly overplayed) is a great one to follow. I also really liked DMSR and lady cab driver. Prince has always been that artist I don’t completely understand the hype for. Ive heard cool tracks, I know how flexible he was as a musician and his rockstar personality. His music can sometimes be just… overly poppy? With a talking heads weirdness. That said, hes got an incredibly unique voice to scream and sing. You cant take that away from him - not even Michael Jackson I still wouldnt put myself into his wild fan group, but im getting closer. His superbowl halftime show in the rain (from the early 00s) nearly pushed me there last night 😅

The songs all run a little long (even 1999, the only one I know on the album) which makes it quite a slog to get through as I'm quite impatient. Didn't manage to get through the whole album, but it wasn't dislikeable

Would have probably blown my mind if I heard it for the first time in 1983. Some definite bangers - let's pretend we're married comes to mind. Lady cab driver's breakdown is great. Creativity comes through in each song. Sounds very "80's" synth keys, groove bass, the sound effects.

There's not doubt he could write a tune, and was an exceptional musician, but no-one needs a double album of multiple 7+ minute tracks. A bit of judicious editing into a single album and this would have been an easy 5 stars.

I appreciate his work ethics and creativity, I just don't like the result very much. And there's too much of it. Favorite song: 1999

I've always enjoyed Prince's main pop hits & respected his talent as one of the world's greatest guitar players of all time. But this album only had a few tracks I could get into, mostly the singles. The rest was definitely funky & well produced, but just never landed for me.

1999 and Little Red Corvette are both classics, so after those two I really thought this album was gonna get a four. But the rest just didn’t hold up for me.

I respect Prince and think he's a fantastic musician, but I just don't get on with a lot of his music. Whilst it's not for me, I recognise it's not bad in any way, so this rating seems fair.

Loved all the hits, but the others were so-so for me

For years I didn't think I liked Prince, apart from bangers like Purple Rain. It was only after he died when 6Music played him for about a month that I realised he had loads of tunes that I really liked. Vids like him shredding and stealing the show to While My Guitar Gently Weeps helped too. Highlights: 1999 Little Red Corvette D.M.S.R Lady Cab Driver. Bit too long but some lovely shredding at the end. International Lover. Wow ok. Felt like I needed a cigarette at the end of it. Think this might be the greatest song of all time. He literally cums in it. Lowlights: Delirious. Sounds like Black Lace. School disco music. Automatic. No reason this should be 9mins long as it doesn't do enough to justify. This album is a bit of a mixed bag but mostly enjoyed it. It's very sexy isn't it. Absolute shagger was ol' Prince. A solid 3.

So, I’ve liked this Prince album. The problem is I think the recording sounds shit. Which is mad for someone who is a supposed prolific writer and recording artist, I think he’s just shit at production. I hate the really clipped reverb/delay he has on his voice, which I suppose is his trademark, just makes the recordings sound a bit fuzzy. Also, some of the tunes end with dark undertones like when the woman calling for the police or the kid is asking why does everyone have a bomb at the end of 1999, I reckon he was a proper wrongun. The lines “I want to fuck the taste out of your mouth” and “(Yes, we're certain of it, he's definitely masturbating)” solidified this opinion. Not a bad album, room for improvement.

Dance Music Sex Romance. This man was a purple horndog. Some interesting stuff here, but I view it more as a precursor to what would come from him later. Some of these songs are too long and become bland. Yet somehow still sexy? Blexy? I think that sums up how I feel about this album. Decent sex that just goes on for too long. For some of these songs, it feels like someone left the drum machine on and everyone forgot about it. But, I quite like a lot of the synths on the album, and Prince's wails and vocal swells are just awesome. Some good guitar solos, too, if somewhat random. Classic album

It's not that often that I listen to much classic pop music, but when I do, I honestly don't mind it. I quite like a few of Prince's songs however his music just doesn't click with me. I forgot why, but last time I listened to a Prince album, there was something about it that just put me off his music for quite a while. Well enough time had passed since then, so it was definitely time for me to give Prince, and his music, another chance! Now I'd never actually listened to this Prince album in full before, and truth be told I actually really enjoyed a few songs and certain moments on this record. However, the one glaring problem I have with it is the lengthy runtime. The 11 song tracklist looks perfect on the surface, until you realise that the total runtime is 1 hour and 10 minutes. That's an average track length of 6.4 minutes, which would be fine if the songs were just a little more engaging and didn't drag out as much as they did (especially towards the ends of the songs when the track basically just turns into a Prince monologue of him telling me how badly he wants to do explicit things to me). Aaahhhhh.... that's what it was that put me off his music! 😂😂

This was an alright album. I know that it is Prince but it was mainly enjoyable as a background listen and wasn't too exciting to properly focus on the songs. A bit mid nowadays, 42 years later but as we all know, 42 is the meaning of life, so I'll just rate this somewhere in the middle.

This was less good than I assumed. I'm a Prince fan going way back, and his talent is undeniable...but dare I say I see him more of a singles artist?

Definitely funky. I’m all about that funk but it started to get a little old by the end. I don’t know too much about prince other than his main songs so this was a good introduction. None of these songs seemed super innovative here but seems like he’s forming his overall sound. I’m excited for more of him tho.

1999 is one of the best songs that we’ve seen on the list. I felt as if the songs were each a bit too long, but I don’t know if I would have felt that way if I was just vibing and not intentionally listening to the album to get through it and rate it. Prince is like the Bean to Michael Jackson’s Ender in Ender’s Shadow. Michael Jackson is better in a lot of ways and more renowned, but there is something special and magical about Prince. He is a little bit looser/more experimental/less polished, but I think it makes his music fun and unique. It also makes it less easily digestible.

An album that I had no idea was going to rival Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret for the coveted Horniest Album on the List award. Starts out super strong with 1999 and Little Red Corvette and then the length and repetitive nature of the songs just drags you down. I’m not one to question the musical genius of Prince, but I will say my rating would be a star higher if the album was 30% shorter.

I’ve always had a lot of respect for Prince because his talent and uniqueness are undeniable. But just recognizing that doesn’t mean I’m fully on board with him or really enjoy his music. There are definitely elements in his songs that I like, but they’re often mixed with other parts that I’m not as into. So, for me, this ends up being a pretty middle of the road album.

Prince's double disc best of are some of the greatest pop songs written. A lot of these songs are not on the best of disc's. 3/5

Starts of with the banger 1999. Little Red Corvette also a lot of fun. Let's Pretend We're Married had some funny lines. DMSR was a blast. Most of the rest of the songs are kind of meh. Biggest stinker was Automatic. It's repetitive and dull and.....9 minutes long. Best song: 1999

I was not a huge fan of Prince but recognize his talent and musicianship and songwriting. This album has notable songs.

I've never really been a fan of Prince and I have had over 30 years to try. He was talented and driven, super professional, and I hear he was pretty good at basketball. Nothing more to add. Three stars to not mess with the average.

i'd never heard prince before which seems crazy but this is pretty much what i expected

Solid, but I do feel that Prince is more hyped up by my rose-coloured-glasses-wearing Gen X parents than it should be. 1999 (and Prince's discography as a whole) speaks to a post-disco generation who's still interested in this whole moonwalking/showboating gig. There are some great electronic sounds here, and that's the main highlight. Almost comedically 80s-sounding for pretty much the entire runtime. Throughout this "1001 Albums" project, I've really warmed up to musicians who wholeheartedly embrace that feel. That being said: the songs are far too long, having an average track length of more than 6 minutes (and some reaching almost 10 minutes). Disco and post-disco have a habit of doing this – presumably because it works well in a club-music context – but during close listening the songs get a little repetitive. The title track is the only one that really gets away with being this long, though it could still be shaved to half its runtime and I'd be happy. Prince, well I love Prince but I have struggled with his music, I know how does that make sense (it doesn't). Well I love how talented, creative and focused he was. One of the best musicians of all time, great writer for others and all that. But I just find some of it just a bit cringe, anywho giving it another go. Songs like delirious and free were nice and funky, but it got to a point where they all just sounded a bit too synth-poppy for me. Also, having 1999 and little red corvette on loop on the radio in the car to and from school for 7 years didn’t help. I want to give it more stars, but none of them are making their way into the rotation.

It's all right. Yet another that kind of fades into the background. It feels jarring for Prince -- so stylized and affected, with his elaborate costumes and precise choreography -- to sing of blatantly crude and sexual things, as he does occasionally in these songs. Otherwise... yeah, it's fine.

Aside from the album’s release being 17 years before the year in question, Prince was ahead of his time in other ways - namely the consistent synth pop/funk punch that this packs throughout its hour-ten runtime. Whilst the title track stands a cut above the rest, I was pleased that a lot of others on here stood up to it, with their own unique (often excessively horny) sound. Despite most tracks straying well over the six minute mark, nothing in here is drawn out, except perhaps the length of the entire album. At points way too horny for my liking, but that’s Prince.

This is definitely the longest album so far at 70 mins, and it's not just the album itself. I was driving while listening to the middle songs, but they all kind of blended together to me. So many of them seemed to stretch out for a long time. Definitely felt like black dance music. Prince's singing is very good, I enjoyed listening to his voice and the smooth music that accompanies it. Overall not my favourite album, but there are a few songs I really like. Favs: 1999, International Lover, Little Red Corvette

So very Prince

Good quality pop but not my cup of tea.

I like Prince. He’s clearly an immensely talented artist that really had a vision for his work. And so I have no issue praising him for that vision and confidence that so clearly come through in his work. But I didn’t get this. It was too damn long. I mean my god - it was only 11 songs but somehow 70 minutes. So many of these tracks were just too damn long. Stuff that repeated and repeated until it became tiresome. The grooves were great, but even the best grooves can’t save a song that overstays its welcome. Prince is a genius, no doubt. And a lot of this was cool. It just overstayed its welcome and got a little too weird at times. Like I’m sure it all made sense in his head, but it just didn’t land for me. Three stars still because Prince, but beyond that I wasn’t sold. Also “Little Red Corvette” is one song I hear about a lot and I finally heard it and do not understand the hype. Please explain. Funky! Prince is one of those artist I respect more than I like. He certainly doesn't lack for talent or confidence but I just don't gel with his music. Appreciate it though and think seeing it live would be stellar.

STANDOUTS: 1999 Little Red Corvette OVERALL: 3.5/5; I wanted to like this more than I did.

First three songs were classics, then things headed south. Could have shortened majority of the songs, not to mention the trashy lyrics for lot of the album.

Good album, "Little Red Corvette" is a certified banger, but it still feels like a rite of passage considering what Prince's career ultimately reached.

First 4 tracks are fire. Then it turns tedious with 8 minute songs about fucking that leaves me feeling a bit sticky.

Not my thing. I can recognize the craft and ingenuity, but just not music I deeply enjoy. The long running time of the album and a lot of the songs is probably appreciated by fans, but really starts to drag for me.

As a Minnesotan who wasn't aged out of Prince's music when it came out I feel like I'm kind of obligated to be a Prince fan but I've never been more than ambivalent about him. (I don't own a single one of his recordings.) I recognize that he was a great talent but there were a lot of times I found it difficult to take him seriously. This album was hot and not so hot but it was OK overall.

I don't get the hype.

Big pop album. Not my thing, but hard to escape hearing it in the day. Prince was a pretty special talent, but just not to my taste, then and now. Known now for joining the long list of dead musicians who drugged just a little too hard.

Some people see Prince as some sort of musical genius. I however think he is a dude that wrote some good tunes and this album obviously has some of the really good ones.. the title track, little red corvette and Free but then there is others that just don’t click with me, like Automatic. Overall it’s enjoyable but I do think there are more Prince albums with more good tracks on…

Like most of Princes album, nails a few songs out of the park but then the rest is just filler.

This just isn't it. The first couple of songs are really good, but the rest of the album is either fine, or not good. The synth/drum machine starts pretty interesting but gets old after a handful of songs. It's got vibes, but I find the music mostly uninteresting. "Lady Cab Driver" breaks up some songs worth skipping, but that's only a brief reprieve. Its definitely well made, but I think I'm just not a huge Prince fan? I think I just find many of his songs a little long and repetitive. Like I wish they swelled more, and changed tempo. But the synthy rock is fun. 1999 was probably my favorite track on the album

I finally understand the hype around Prince but also get why he doesn’t get many new fans. While his style was likely innovative at the time it feels very dated now. Overall had fun listening to this.

Even though I’m not much of a prince fan this album started off very strong. However after the first three songs this really dropped off and sounded like just another mediocre 80’s synthesizer based album which is definitely not my thing.

This was a fun album - especially “1999” - but I wasn’t really matching its energy today. A bit too long and too homogenous. I can see the appeal, though.

Firstly it does work as a coherent double album. Secondly the 80s production really sucks (especially the synth sound) Not a fan of this one.

Really tried to like it more

Prince is like some tiny, colourful hummingbird. Impossible to not be entranced by the brilliance of the wings. But, apart from a couple of songs, I won't be listening again - too long and not all great.

usual music preference towards metal, classical, electronic, and rap. 1. Prince 1999: heard a couple songs from the album before but never really had an interest in Prince outside of watching Purple Rain and digging the pop funk style. 5/10 not bad at all & I wouldn't change the station if I heard it on the radio but doesn't make me want to explore more either.

I preferred this to Sign of The Times. The hits are the best for me. I can't imagine many moments when playing International Lover would be appropriate!

I like 80’s music but this was a it too much, I guess sadly I’ve grown out of my 80’s obsession. Like the first two and definitely the last track

Mood: Friday afternoon Setting: Finishing up the work day I enjoyed it decently. I never have really listened to Prince other than a couple hits but I felt a little hard-done by listening to a Prince album and not getting to hear Purple Rain? That seems unfair. I neither loved nor hated this album, so solid 3 but closer to 4 than to 2.

I liked this more than another Prince album I got, it's fun to listen to and the first few songs are cool. however, for me, it gets old fast (around 3 songs in, to be precise) – drug-fueled hedonistic sex music is just not really the genre I find myself drawn to or can connect with, so it just becomes repetitive. maybe it's creative and interesting, but it's difficult to judge from today's perspective. obligatory note: I'm not a conservative; I absolutely support sex positivity, and I think talking about safe and consensual sex between any and all genders in public spaces is not just okay but necessary – that's not the reason I don't vibe with the album.

Prince klingt wie Prince - auch in diesem Album. „1999“ ist prägend für seinen Sound und „Little Red Corvette“ ist sehr gelungen. Der Rest des Album entspricht zwar seinem Sound ist aber über weite Strecken langweilig und teils auch sehr einfach arrangiert … ein bisschen so wie der MusicMaker auf dem Commodore C64. Kein weiteres Stück (vielleicht „Free“) ist nennenswert.

Album starts of fantastically with those first two tracks, but after that theres a bunch of tracks that feel a bit to long, causing the album to drag on a bit. Still a pretty good offering from Prince.

I grew up in a family that loves Prince. This is actually the first full album I have heard from Prince. I recognized a few songs that I have heard before such as Little Red Corvette, and 1999. Though those songs are good, my favorites from this album are Free, All the Critics Love U in New York, and 1999. Although I like songs on this album, I only like 3/11. That’s the reason I’m giving this album a rating of 3/5. The album is okay, but not the best. I would listen to it again though.

I didn't like it as much as Purple Rain, and that's a "sometimes" album for me. He's talented, but I like what he put out in the album after 1999.

I was psyched to see another Prince album come up but… ehhhh? Do they allllll have to be so long? A lot of repetition and very “bleep bloop” sounding. Maybe I’m in the wrong headspace but I definitely wasn’t grooving like Prince intended.

Sometimes it’s like he’s a parody of himself. The songs get repetitive for me especially in the top half of the album.

I'm not a Prince fan but I'm open to discover him under a new light. This album won't make it, however. It failed to keep my attention all the way though.

The number of 80s comedies that start with 1999 playing during the opening credits has to be greater than zero. I have never listened to an entire Prince album. The electric drums, claps effects and synths are such a product of the time.

I have loved Prince's other albums, but this one seemed just obsessed with synth to the detriment of the music. It lacked the charisma charm and grace Prince usually infuses.

Starts out like the New Year’s Eve party of the century! Little Red Corvette drives the crowd Delirious, great 80s dance vibe. But then the songs get too long. Don’t wanna be on the dance floor for that same 8 minute beat. B side is weak, but hits carry the album. Revolutionary vision in 1982. (2.6*s)

I def dig Prince but a lot of the songs on this compilation came off as a little cheesy to me, like a bad 80's video game backing track with some hip thrusts thrown in. There's a lot to unpack here so it warranted a repeat listen and was better the second time around. Still, a lot of sound effects and little melodies that tack it permanently to the early 80's (not necessarily a bad thing) that I didn't need. It's a lot of electro synth and drum machine for 9 minutes at a time and all those little beeps and pops sorta overshadow his guitar talents. By the end, you feel like your toes have been licked and your splattered in his sweat (also not necessarily a bad thing). Rounding up because Prince.

Funky Prince-bot likes a long song. Not bad but runs on with the same electro beats. Title track is the highlight.

I wouldn't call it loaded with hits but doesn't have many low points. Funky, groovy and sensual much like Prince himself. Starts to drag in the second half but overall I enjoyed the listen. It feels like Prince was carving out a new sound and it worked for the most part. Prince is certainly a unique and notable talent. Everybody knows plenty of Prince hits but his expansive discography means I haven't listened to a Prince album in unison before this. I expect he has plenty of other music I would enjoy but also plenty I would need to skip. I don't think I have it in me to delve into 20+ albums but hope he shows up on the list again. 2.8 stars

It doesn't hold up. It was the early 80's and music wasn't great back then in general. Yes, there are a couple iconic songs on this and I'll give it 3 justfor that, but its not relistenable as an entire album.
