Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Jesus christ that's a horny album. Would be 4 stars but some songs are just so long and some just mad filler lol. I really like Prince though, he was an incredible talent. 3 stars, wish it had stayed as strong as it had opened. Enjoyed this though
Prince's double disc best of are some of the greatest pop songs written. A lot of these songs are not on the best of disc's. 3/5
Starts of with the banger 1999. Little Red Corvette also a lot of fun. Let's Pretend We're Married had some funny lines. DMSR was a blast. Most of the rest of the songs are kind of meh. Biggest stinker was Automatic. It's repetitive and dull and.....9 minutes long. Best song: 1999
I was not a huge fan of Prince but recognize his talent and musicianship and songwriting. This album has notable songs.
3.5
I've never really been a fan of Prince and I have had over 30 years to try. He was talented and driven, super professional, and I hear he was pretty good at basketball. Nothing more to add. Three stars to not mess with the average.
Maybe too much sexy
Funky 3.5/5
i'd never heard prince before which seems crazy but this is pretty much what i expected
Solid, but I do feel that Prince is more hyped up by my rose-coloured-glasses-wearing Gen X parents than it should be. 1999 (and Prince's discography as a whole) speaks to a post-disco generation who's still interested in this whole moonwalking/showboating gig. There are some great electronic sounds here, and that's the main highlight. Almost comedically 80s-sounding for pretty much the entire runtime. Throughout this "1001 Albums" project, I've really warmed up to musicians who wholeheartedly embrace that feel. That being said: the songs are far too long, having an average track length of more than 6 minutes (and some reaching almost 10 minutes). Disco and post-disco have a habit of doing this – presumably because it works well in a club-music context – but during close listening the songs get a little repetitive. The title track is the only one that really gets away with being this long, though it could still be shaved to half its runtime and I'd be happy. I get the feeling this album would've been excellent for live touring. 3/5 Key tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver
Several bangers, and then a lot of Prince songs.
Every song is about two minutes too long.
It started off great, then slowly deteriorated into prince moaning.
Not my jam. Good stuff though .
Fun
3.5
Prince, well I love Prince but I have struggled with his music, I know how does that make sense (it doesn't). Well I love how talented, creative and focused he was. One of the best musicians of all time, great writer for others and all that. But I just find some of it just a bit cringe, anywho giving it another go. Stand out tracks: - 1999 - Little red corvette (with the cringe factor) - Let's pretend we're married
A very 80’s synth heavy album. Little red corvette is one of princes best
Songs like delirious and free were nice and funky, but it got to a point where they all just sounded a bit too synth-poppy for me. Also, having 1999 and little red corvette on loop on the radio in the car to and from school for 7 years didn’t help. I want to give it more stars, but none of them are making their way into the rotation.
mj better
It's all right. Yet another that kind of fades into the background. It feels jarring for Prince -- so stylized and affected, with his elaborate costumes and precise choreography -- to sing of blatantly crude and sexual things, as he does occasionally in these songs. Otherwise... yeah, it's fine.
Starts with two massive hits and has some excellent songs throughout, it just wasn’t really consistently captivating enough for me. 3.5/5
A few bangers, but overall cohesion wasn't there for me
It's so weird but it still works somehow
startet mit zwei tollen songs, fällt nachher massiv ab. und hey, das war der start einer steilen karriere (ja, 5. album, ich weiss) welche nebst vielfältiger musik auch viel „lärm“ umfasste. also fast wie dieses album. 😉
The songs weren't bad, quite catchy. But the album was too long and I hate the screeching Maybe I'm just not a Prince fan 3 ⭐️
Aside from the album’s release being 17 years before the year in question, Prince was ahead of his time in other ways - namely the consistent synth pop/funk punch that this packs throughout its hour-ten runtime. Whilst the title track stands a cut above the rest, I was pleased that a lot of others on here stood up to it, with their own unique (often excessively horny) sound. Despite most tracks straying well over the six minute mark, nothing in here is drawn out, except perhaps the length of the entire album. At points way too horny for my liking, but that’s Prince.
a party that fizzes out a bit at the end.
Props for being a big seller. Prince has some good dance tunes, but as for an album that I'd sit down and headphone, it's not for me. I know this is nigh near blasphemy to lots of folks. :-D
I've never been a huge fan of Prince, but I can't deny his talent in producing massively popular pop songs. There's some classics on here, but did it really have to be a double album? The back half really drags in my opinion.
I like Prince and this album is good. However some of the compositions are a bit long. Other than the hits can’t see myself really good back to this often.
I just don't really like Prince that much. This is 'alright'.
This is definitely the longest album so far at 70 mins, and it's not just the album itself. I was driving while listening to the middle songs, but they all kind of blended together to me. So many of them seemed to stretch out for a long time. Definitely felt like black dance music. Prince's singing is very good, I enjoyed listening to his voice and the smooth music that accompanies it. Overall not my favourite album, but there are a few songs I really like. Favs: 1999, International Lover, Little Red Corvette
So very Prince
Good quality pop but not my cup of tea.
I like Prince. He’s clearly an immensely talented artist that really had a vision for his work. And so I have no issue praising him for that vision and confidence that so clearly come through in his work. But I didn’t get this. It was too damn long. I mean my god - it was only 11 songs but somehow 70 minutes. So many of these tracks were just too damn long. Stuff that repeated and repeated until it became tiresome. The grooves were great, but even the best grooves can’t save a song that overstays its welcome. Prince is a genius, no doubt. And a lot of this was cool. It just overstayed its welcome and got a little too weird at times. Like I’m sure it all made sense in his head, but it just didn’t land for me. Three stars still because Prince, but beyond that I wasn’t sold. Also “Little Red Corvette” is one song I hear about a lot and I finally heard it and do not understand the hype. Please explain. Standout Tracks: Delirious, Lady Cab Driver
Not my vibe.
IT'S GOOD BUT I'M SO IRRITATED. ALSO WHAT IS THAT ONE TRACK. WHAT DID THIS DEVOLVE INTO. I AM DEEPLY CONFUSED. FIRST 4 TRACKS BRILLIANT REST NOT SO MUCH. 2.5/5 I AM CONFLICTED.
Funky com elevado clima travesso. Mas sem hit que conheço num fica muito interessante.
Funky! Prince is one of those artist I respect more than I like. He certainly doesn't lack for talent or confidence but I just don't gel with his music. Appreciate it though and think seeing it live would be stellar.
STANDOUTS: 1999 Little Red Corvette OVERALL: 3.5/5; I wanted to like this more than I did.
First three songs were classics, then things headed south. Could have shortened majority of the songs, not to mention the trashy lyrics for lot of the album.
Good album, "Little Red Corvette" is a certified banger, but it still feels like a rite of passage considering what Prince's career ultimately reached.
Starts off and finishes brilliantly but a bit self indulgent in between
For all the smooth buttery horny energy, this didn’t excite me very much.
This was ok, but gets a bit samey
Okay he told me he wants me to have fun from the outset, and fun I had! Sexy, experimental, raunchy, dreamy, dramatic, breathy - allllll I want and more. I just appreciate weaving together (but also remaining disparate at points): funk, synth pop, rock, jazz - just so cool! Some favorites: - let’s pretend we’re married - there’s something in the water - free - lady cab driver Because there are still some skips for me, I gave a 3
First 4 tracks are fire. Then it turns tedious with 8 minute songs about fucking that leaves me feeling a bit sticky.
Not my thing. I can recognize the craft and ingenuity, but just not music I deeply enjoy. The long running time of the album and a lot of the songs is probably appreciated by fans, but really starts to drag for me.
Some good, classic Prince here. A bit of blue language from the purple Prince.
The hits are catchy but most of the latter half of the album just blends in together.
It’s good, some songs go on forecer
As a Minnesotan who wasn't aged out of Prince's music when it came out I feel like I'm kind of obligated to be a Prince fan but I've never been more than ambivalent about him. (I don't own a single one of his recordings.) I recognize that he was a great talent but there were a lot of times I found it difficult to take him seriously. This album was hot and not so hot but it was OK overall.
3 amazing and excellent songs. The rest of the album is fine...
Some truly great songs but the back half of this album kind of meanders with odds and ends.
Not my Genere but it's definitely giving!
funk, cool~
Lol, go to horny jail
I don't get the hype.
Big pop album. Not my thing, but hard to escape hearing it in the day. Prince was a pretty special talent, but just not to my taste, then and now. Known now for joining the long list of dead musicians who drugged just a little too hard.
Some people see Prince as some sort of musical genius. I however think he is a dude that wrote some good tunes and this album obviously has some of the really good ones.. the title track, little red corvette and Free but then there is others that just don’t click with me, like Automatic. Overall it’s enjoyable but I do think there are more Prince albums with more good tracks on…
Like most of Princes album, nails a few songs out of the park but then the rest is just filler.
I’m not a Prince fan although I appreciate his talent and why others like him. A couple songs are fun or good to listen to.
This started off as the best Prince album we've listened to. The first 3 or 4 songs are really good. But the second half is not really good, or at least, not what I like in music.
Nice but not my cup of tea
Too sexy
Has some bangers but feels too long. 6/10
I know it’s a masterpiece, I know he’s a genius—but emotionally, I’m blank on it. That’s always been the case with most Prince (solo on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” excluded).
Not bad... but really carried by the few hits.
some bangers at the start, quite a lengthy album with a bit too much repetition, nice listen tho
The hits are great, but by the time you reach “Something’s In The Water,”… I don’t know who enjoys that. Just seems cacophonous.
Funky and modern tunes (back then and still today) but every song is a bit too long and repetitive for me.
Has some good grooves but it's too long and too repetitive in places
1999 Lady Cab Driver
Prince is greatness. Couple of bangers on here but didn’t think it was his most dense compilation. Still enjoyed it. I just want an album of him solo-ing on purple rain.
First three tracks are bangers, but the rest of the album didn’t do it for me. 3.25/5
I liked this album musically, but not lyrically. I feel like this speaks to the high school range of people personally. Musically I really enjoyed it, I think I'll like other prince stuff
i understand why prince is considered a legend, but his music has just never truly clicked for me. decent album, but far from my favorite of his
This just isn't it. The first couple of songs are really good, but the rest of the album is either fine, or not good. The synth/drum machine starts pretty interesting but gets old after a handful of songs. It's got vibes, but I find the music mostly uninteresting. "Lady Cab Driver" breaks up some songs worth skipping, but that's only a brief reprieve. I've never actually listened to Prince before, so this experience is teaching me that his hits are great, that rest is just there. Favorite Song(s): 1999, Lady Cab Driver
Pretty good from the artist formally known as!
Its definitely well made, but I think I'm just not a huge Prince fan? I think I just find many of his songs a little long and repetitive. Like I wish they swelled more, and changed tempo. But the synthy rock is fun. 1999 was probably my favorite track on the album
Masterful dynamics, gets a bit boring.
Pretty good. Not my favorite album from prince
Sounds very dated, but in a good way. A welcome dose of nostalgia. Not my favourite album of his by a mile, but really nice to revisit. Little Red Corvette 👌
Some amazing songs at the start before descending into nothingness. Typical Prince!
I finally understand the hype around Prince but also get why he doesn’t get many new fans. While his style was likely innovative at the time it feels very dated now. Overall had fun listening to this.
Even though I’m not much of a prince fan this album started off very strong. However after the first three songs this really dropped off and sounded like just another mediocre 80’s synthesizer based album which is definitely not my thing.
199 and Little Red Corvette are certified bangers. The rest of the album was interesting, but no other big hits that stood out for me.
Okay. Not my type of music.
Starting off with 1999 and little red corvette is pretty strong. Hit and miss for me after that, but the hits are pretty fun
3.3 I dont think I was in a mood for Prince when I listed to this. Album was good, but I really don't like Little Red Corvette
This was a fun album - especially “1999” - but I wasn’t really matching its energy today. A bit too long and too homogenous. I can see the appeal, though.
Firstly it does work as a coherent double album. Secondly the 80s production really sucks (especially the synth sound) Not a fan of this one.
It's Prince
Some great songs but also some fillers.
Some bangers, some not. Weird choices to have preachy songs along with songs about fucking a lot.
Solid
Doesn't beat Purple Rain. Was thinking this could've/should've ended after "Free" but then I really liked the last three songs! Not planning to check out the 65-song super deluxe edition, unfortunately.
Really tried to like it more
Prince is like some tiny, colourful hummingbird. Impossible to not be entranced by the brilliance of the wings. But, apart from a couple of songs, I won't be listening again - too long and not all great.
Big funky sexy purple album. Some great tracks here and others that lost me a bit. Favourites were 1999, D.M.S.R, Lady Cab Driver. 3.5/5, rounding down.
3.5. Was ok
usual music preference towards metal, classical, electronic, and rap. 1. Prince 1999: heard a couple songs from the album before but never really had an interest in Prince outside of watching Purple Rain and digging the pop funk style. 5/10 not bad at all & I wouldn't change the station if I heard it on the radio but doesn't make me want to explore more either.
I preferred this to Sign of The Times. The hits are the best for me. I can't imagine many moments when playing International Lover would be appropriate!
I like 80’s music but this was a it too much, I guess sadly I’ve grown out of my 80’s obsession. Like the first two and definitely the last track
Solid. The Lady cabdriver went for a ride.
Fun but not particularly engaging 2.5/5
Funky funky tracks, but just too long-winded and meandering for me to get excited about. Fave track: D.M.S.R.
Alright
This is a pretty good album if you’re into Prince. Not sure if it’s a must listen especially for people who aren’t fans.
Should be 45 minutes 3/5
Mood: Friday afternoon Setting: Finishing up the work day I enjoyed it decently. I never have really listened to Prince other than a couple hits but I felt a little hard-done by listening to a Prince album and not getting to hear Purple Rain? That seems unfair. I neither loved nor hated this album, so solid 3 but closer to 4 than to 2.
I liked this more than another Prince album I got, it's fun to listen to and the first few songs are cool. however, for me, it gets old fast (around 3 songs in, to be precise) – drug-fueled hedonistic sex music is just not really the genre I find myself drawn to or can connect with, so it just becomes repetitive. maybe it's creative and interesting, but it's difficult to judge from today's perspective. obligatory note: I'm not a conservative; I absolutely support sex positivity, and I think talking about safe and consensual sex between any and all genders in public spaces is not just okay but necessary – that's not the reason I don't vibe with the album.
i suppose he liked sex
Dá pra ver a influência do Prince na música pop, mas não é meu favorito
The hits still pop. Dance, music, sex, romance kinda sums it up. It would make a good album for background at a party. 3*
I don’t know what prince thought he was doing with this one. This guy just has no shame Favorite: 1999 Least favorite: D.M.S.R 3.5/5
Album starts of fantastically with those first two tracks, but after that theres a bunch of tracks that feel a bit to long, causing the album to drag on a bit. Still a pretty good offering from Prince.
I grew up in a family that loves Prince. This is actually the first full album I have heard from Prince. I recognized a few songs that I have heard before such as Little Red Corvette, and 1999. Though those songs are good, my favorites from this album are Free, All the Critics Love U in New York, and 1999. Although I like songs on this album, I only like 3/11. That’s the reason I’m giving this album a rating of 3/5. The album is okay, but not the best. I would listen to it again though.
Not really my vibe but glad i hear it
Fun album, but nothing special to me. It was nice to have in the background or for a car ride. Favorite song was delirious. Did not add to my Spotify playlist.
Prince will always hold a special place in my heart. he influenced some of my favorite bands like Ween and Phish so I appreciate him. Fun Prince Album.
I never realized Prince wrote these songs… I feel dumb. Also, this man fucks. 3.4
I didn't like it as much as Purple Rain, and that's a "sometimes" album for me. He's talented, but I like what he put out in the album after 1999.
Good funk and R&B tunes. The title track absolutely rips but the songs on the rest of the album are hard to distinguish.
Slightly funky, cool grooves, great vocals and great sound, but sounds very dated to my ear. Three stars.
I was psyched to see another Prince album come up but… ehhhh? Do they allllll have to be so long? A lot of repetition and very “bleep bloop” sounding. Maybe I’m in the wrong headspace but I definitely wasn’t grooving like Prince intended.
Sometimes it’s like he’s a parody of himself. The songs get repetitive for me especially in the top half of the album.
I'm not a Prince fan but I'm open to discover him under a new light. This album won't make it, however. It failed to keep my attention all the way though.
C'est bon Prince
The number of 80s comedies that start with 1999 playing during the opening credits has to be greater than zero. I have never listened to an entire Prince album. The electric drums, claps effects and synths are such a product of the time.
2.5 tähteä pyöristyy vahvan alun vuoksi ylöspäin.
I have loved Prince's other albums, but this one seemed just obsessed with synth to the detriment of the music. It lacked the charisma charm and grace Prince usually infuses.
I like the beats. The songs are a little too long for me, though. (I felt similarly about War's album The World is a Ghetto, although I would say this is a big step up).
Nice, groovy beats the whole album long. Most of the time I like the music more than the vocals and lyrics on this. The additional songs on the double LP compared with the single vinyl edition cost him the fourth star. Sometimes less is more! Favourite songs: "1999", "Free", "International Lover"
Starts out like the New Year’s Eve party of the century! Little Red Corvette drives the crowd Delirious, great 80s dance vibe. But then the songs get too long. Don’t wanna be on the dance floor for that same 8 minute beat. B side is weak, but hits carry the album. Revolutionary vision in 1982. (2.6*s)
I def dig Prince but a lot of the songs on this compilation came off as a little cheesy to me, like a bad 80's video game backing track with some hip thrusts thrown in. There's a lot to unpack here so it warranted a repeat listen and was better the second time around. Still, a lot of sound effects and little melodies that tack it permanently to the early 80's (not necessarily a bad thing) that I didn't need. It's a lot of electro synth and drum machine for 9 minutes at a time and all those little beeps and pops sorta overshadow his guitar talents. By the end, you feel like your toes have been licked and your splattered in his sweat (also not necessarily a bad thing). Rounding up because Prince.
Funky Prince-bot likes a long song. Not bad but runs on with the same electro beats. Title track is the highlight.
I wouldn't call it loaded with hits but doesn't have many low points. Funky, groovy and sensual much like Prince himself. Starts to drag in the second half but overall I enjoyed the listen. It feels like Prince was carving out a new sound and it worked for the most part. Prince is certainly a unique and notable talent. Everybody knows plenty of Prince hits but his expansive discography means I haven't listened to a Prince album in unison before this. I expect he has plenty of other music I would enjoy but also plenty I would need to skip. I don't think I have it in me to delve into 20+ albums but hope he shows up on the list again. 2.8 stars
It doesn't hold up. It was the early 80's and music wasn't great back then in general. Yes, there are a couple iconic songs on this and I'll give it 3 justfor that, but its not relistenable as an entire album.
This album would be so great if it was all like the first two songs. But the rest of the album sounds so cheesy and outdated it almost made me even give a lesser rating
An amazing musician who sadly mostly writes lyrics that I find uninteresting topically.
It's an okay album greatly bolstered by 1999 and Little Red Corvette.
Great party songs. Production aged like milk. This is what the most expensive synthesizers and drum machines in 1982 sounded like.
More interesting than I thought it would be, listening all the way through? That's probably on me, though.
I mean its good don't get me wrong but it starts to feel repetitive after some time . I don't know whether to associate this with length of songs and overall regord or just the artistry itself
3.5/5 suprisingly better than the other albums on this list
Prince is very talented. And the first couple tracks here are very good. But a lot of them aren’t. Which would be fine if they weren’t each 5+ minutes long. Like, does All The Critics Love U in New York need to be 6 minutes long? Does Lady Cab Driver need to be 8? High highs, and boring lows. 6/10 Top 3: 1. 1999 2. Little Red Corvette 3. International Lover
RnB, Soul, 1982 -> 3
I know Prince is a beloved institution at this point, but he’s just never clicked for me. All his songs feel like they’re missing something
kind of mid for me. I've heard a lot of the songs beforehand and I feel like the ones I've heard were the stand outs and everything else just blended together.
Up there with some of the classics, but just for one or two tracks. I certainly felt a samey vibe towards the end.
It's Prince, it's sexy, it's cool, and it's way too long for me to keep my interest in this 80s, synthy, funk extravaganza.
I was lucky enough to see Prince live a couple of times. The great thing about that is obvious - duh. The setback is that songs like “Delirious” sounds rather bland in its studio version in comparison to live editions. Not “Little Red Corvette” though, still banger! 1999 is a massive work that requires applause for what it is. But it’s also too massive to bear its own weight in the end. Unfortunately, as there is a lot to love about this. There’s a shorter version of the record to be found on vinyl. Go find that.
Started off strong then fell off
Remember when we all thought we were going to die in Y2k and "1999" was absolutely everywhere? The quaint old times (or maybe we did all die then, and this is the Bad Place?). It's undeniable that Prince was a musical genius. Dude played like 17 instruments, wrote, produced, danced—he did it all. His performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the George Harrison tribute might just be the best live performance ever. That said, Prince's music has always been an artist who, like the man himself, I prefer in small doses. I own Purple Rain but don't listen to it that often. Likewise, the first two tracks on this album are iconic (the aforementioned "1999" and "Little Red Corvette"). "Free" is also pretty good. The rest of the album was pretty meh for me. Musically, I bet it was mind blowing at the time with its use of synths and drum machines and experimentation. And there are some great funk grooves, and several amazing guitar solos. But most of the songs are overly long and start to become background music after awhile. And the lyrics—dude, we get it: you like sex. There's only so many times you can simulate sex noises on a record before it starts to feel like someone's twelve-year-old nephew hijacked the microphone trying to be funny. It's not even that I'm scandalized by it—it's just not very interesting after the third song, let alone the tenth. 3/5
Pensaba que el mítico prince molaría algo más
I like the vibe but only a couple of the songs really grabbed me
At first I didn’t think this was for me but as the album played on, I found myself getting into it. This genre is still not my typical choice but I can see how Prince became as iconic as he was. Intriguing instrumentation, surprisingly explicit lyrics, and a clear passion for wanting people to have fun and dance. It’s definitely intoxicating and I can see how it ended up on this list. I would rate it 3.5/5 stars, but I can’t do halves!
se me hace largo.
A real mixed bag.
Does he really say "f### the taste outta' you're mouth"?! Some parts did not age well.
None of the songs are necessarily bad, but damn do they overstay their welcome. The vibes and instrumentals are there, but they're not grasping enough to be as long as they are. They do make you want to get up and dance, but not for over an hour. P.S. Shout out to Prince's Tom & Jerry screams; RIP the legend
Not a Prince Fan, one of the better albums though...
I think Mr. Prince has his expectations for the late 90s too high. Then again, we did get The Matrix, so maybe not so.
Super talented artist but just a lot of weird stuff
An early Prince: already Prince-style but with electronics of the 80ies.
Heard of prince and a few song titles ring bells. Quite enjoying the vibe. High 3.
There wasn’t enough consistently here to get me on board with all of the praise 1999 receives. Prince is pretty horny on this one, at times it worked and at other points it was just a bit much, Lady Cab Driver in particular. All that being said, there is some exceptional dance pop here starting with the title track. D.M.S.R and All the Critics Love U in NY were a couple other of my favourites. Overall, interesting listen but I think I’ll stick to Purple Rain. 3 stars
2.81
Very early 80's. Okay, didn't fall in love with anything in particular. If I had a cheap casio keyboard and 100 hours, I could make something similarly thin sounding.
Never listened to a full Prince album before and had high expectations. Was a little let down from this album - some great songs but a lot of forgettable ones as well.
Didn't like it as much as Purple Rain, but that's a pretty high bar to clear. Almost a 4.
This was okay. I think I needed some coke and three bad bitches to see the vision.
It was okay. Definitely like Purple Rain better. While the beats and sounds were super interesting and fun, the album overall just didn’t capture my attention as much.
Great funk album clearly Ahead of its time and influenced so much music after it, but in my opinion this is just not in the same league as purple rain or sign o’ the times. Which are my Prince go to albums. I think the songs are just a little too long and self indulgent at times.
some bangers! but not all were fabulous
Eh, I was a bit bored. 3/5 -- "Not really interested in an encore for this one."
Bra album!
I think I would have liked it more if the songs weren’t so long
Un peu trop kitch pour les 3 premiers quarts mais la fin sauve tout
Tirando a temática, é um album excepcional com melodias viciantes e vibrantes com uma produção impecável.
1999 // Little Red Corvette // Free //
1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, are the only 3 tracks worth listening to, the rest of the album is annoying at best. Prince did create other great music, it's just not on this album.
I always thought that Prince was a great artist and an excellent guitar player. Recently I saw when he performed during the Super Bowl halftime show and it's insane how good it was. This album doesn't even come close to my image of Prince and my previous experiences with his works. The albulm 1999 is just OK and didn't blow me away. It did however make me a little bit uneasy as I was listening to it with others in the room and I hope they didn't hear anything from the headphones. Jeebus it's sexual.
I like Prince, but 1999 was not my thing.
- International Lover
I loved the first 2 songs. Not crazy about the last two. Especially the S&M part of the video.
So, after the first three songs, shit got real weird.
Synthy. Punchy. Sexy. Not for the kids
Prince deciding to make this a double album feels like a flex. Thankfully this was released as a palatable single LP in some countries. The hits (1999, Little Red Corvette) still pack a punch. Subsequent tracks are hit and miss, mostly due to the length. The funk driven drums and synth combo definitely have inspired artists to come. Odd choice to include women crying at the end of Automatic or the amused baby noise at the end of Delirious. We can trust Prince to perform each song at an epic scale. Many lyrics range from flirtatious to seductively sinister. Out of the three Prince albums on the list, this is the front runner for holding its place. Overall: 6/10
I appreciate his talent and this is a strong album, especially the second half is interesting. I didn't really like the early 1980s production style though - it is a sound that I don't usually like. Overall I've found this a good album but I liked 'Purple Rain' much more than this one.
Little Red Corvette is phenomenal Not my style of music and some of the songs were lengthy however it is obvious to see how influential this would be in 1982. The music was mixed as if it came out in the 2020s.
Ihan jees!
Was stoked to hear the baby from Aaliyah's "Are you that somebody" on "Delirious" Catchy but the musicality sounds very 80s to me in a dated way... might be partially my not great speakers but there's a flatness & busyness to the sounds. Like the drums in "Let's Pretend We're Married" sounded chintzy like those included in most DAWs. I can imagine these songs were pretty revolutionary in 1982 and perhaps my listen suffers from hearing imitators & later evolution of these sounds all my life. DSMR & Lady Cabdriver were pretty sick. 3.5 / 5
Only liked a couple songs
Admittedly I'm not much a fan of Prince, nothing personal. I did enjoy this album a good deal, there were some standout songs.
Ganz gut, aber bissi anstrengend
2nd listen. I just generally don’t like Prince’s style, but I think this is one of his best albums.
This was an alright album. I could see where childish gambino got his influences for Redbone here. Overall it was fine, but wasn't entirely my thing for most of it. Still pretty good though Feeling decent to strong 3
Prince's sound is interesting but many of these songs are much too long for their content.
Lekkere binnenkomer man. Dan 2 nummesr die me minder pakken, voor we weer volle bak funken met Let's pretend were married! DMSR funkt ook de pan uit. Synths galloreeee. Volgens mij is dit hele album gewoon pure sex. Helaas. FAVO:1999, Lets pretend were married, DMSR
1999 - 8/10 Little Red Corvette - 8/10 Delirious - 7.5/10 Let’s Pretend We’re Married - 8.5/10 D.M.S.R - 7/10 Automatic - 7/10 Something in the Water - 8/10 Free - 8/10 Lady Cab Driver - 7.5/10 All the Critics Love U in New York- 7.5/10 International Lover - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 74.5/110
I think I like Prince, but if I'm honest, I've never found the energy to get really into him. There's no doubting the musical chops on this; he's a superb guitar player and singer, and the songs are extremely funky and fun. But it all just leaves me a little cold. There's not that much emotional range I think. Certainly when you compare it to Purple Rain say, this all just seems a touch too same-y for me. Not bad, but I was expecting to have the scales fall from my eyes in a major way
I know its Prince and I am supposed to rate high but I think album is just okay. I was not blown away and I barely remember any tune or song after listening so I guess its not that life-changing art.
I’d love to hear a fan edit of this album with all of the overlong instrumental breaks edited down. This would be a 10/10 if most of the songs were about half as long. “International Lover” is the only one that earns that length, although it is good that the album ends on such a high note.
1999 heel leuke opener, goeie mix, mag wel 2 minuten korter+wtf is dat einde?? Delirious' trompet synth deuntje is hilarisch Let's pretend we are married klinkt als king gizz in a good way Sex en romance wow gedurft Rare eindes, vormt een raar interessant verhaal
Good. Prince’s cool style is hard to beat
Not a prince guy. I don’t get it.
1999 - weird ass distorted "don't worry, I won't hurt you." fantastic mixing - love how the all the guitar lines on the right always are followed with a rift on the left. wtf is the "why does everyone have a bomb little red corvette - holy shit what a smooth transition! overall fun song delirious - yeah I don't like this one lol. that high pitched synth is really annoying; the beat feels like it came from a child's TV show - no ty for me let's pretend were married - super fun song! liked alot. can't believe it's 7 min tho dmsr - bruh why is it 8 min; he starts singing at 57 sec... but damn, that bass line is so thiccc, actually just nothing but funk automatic - again, why so longgggg - song okay, tiny bit boring ngl something in the water (does not compute) - uhhh weird song. is okay? I didn't really enjoy free- an okay ballad, idk I feel like the later half of the album kinda too slow? and his voice is very weak on the song lady cab driver - like the band is great, I just hate his wispy voice in the beginning, also the spoken word part meh with all the moans in the back - damn that guitar solo wtf. all the critics love you in new York - uhhh wtf did I just listen too. again, way too long international lover - again, I don't like his wispy voice - ik he's trying to be sensual, but it's just ejdhhxnd. his squeaks are not hot lol. I think overall probs like 3/5 - the some of the songs are fun! but way too long lol. there's like 45 min of just instrumental sections
Not really my jam.
It's all a bit 12", eh? Delay drums. Two tempos: cocaine dancing and sex.
I liked this in parts. Would listen again.
Great album
Like an oasis of goat milk
Started well, but lost interest part way through. nice sound but very repetitive
Had a hard time evaluating this one. Some incredible creativity for its time but I’ve just never clicked with Prince in general
Listened to this while playing Paperback Adventures. Such a fun game! I have a pre-existing negative opinion of Prince for reasons. I enjoyed this album ok...but his voice just gets under my skin. Fun story...I had an ex whose bestie got pregnant at a Prince concert, and had her abortion at a Britney Spears concert.
Each song is unique - it was fun to listen to.
started great, but faded
Never listened to a Prince album in full before. Dude was talented beyond belief, without any question of a doubt, but I can’t personally get into him. 1999 was alright.
I have mixed feelings about this album. On one hand little red Corvette and critics only love u in NY are fantastic. On the other hand getting into your car in a dark parking garage and hearing the beginning of 1999 is really not it. The album is half iconic pop songs and half the world is going to end subplot I was not expecting. I still really like Prince but none of these songs needed to be more than 4-5 mins long
Better than purple rain but not good enough yet to make me a true fan of Prince. Enjoyable enough to not turn it off though
I wanted to give this 4* because there are some classics on here. But there are a handful that are skippable. Also, the production quality and overall musicianship is just not as strong as his other works. Too much synth and not enough Prince jamming out.
Too saucy
Previously rated: Purple Rain (4/5) ******************* I did not know this was a double album. The first three songs here (1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious) are great, and I have a lot of nostalgia for them as they were popular when I first started listening to music. Then we get to the sexually explicit Let's Pretend We're Married, and this is where I started to be put off. If it was just that track, I could overlook it, but the horniness and sex noises are sprinkled throughout the rest of the album. I was glad when it was over. I wanted to take a shower, but then I just let the first three tracks play again, and they are what brings the album up to a 3/5.
Funky. Lil too corny for me.
Some good. Some bad. Some boring songs for how Prince is.
This would be an EZ 4 if every song didn't drag on for 2-3 minutes too long. 6.5 minutes per song is ridiculous. 3.5
Can get into this relatively easy, though still not grooving 100%. Some of the interludes are fairly....odd and uncomfortable.
Not great, not terrible
nav labākais prince albums
Good, but not really my jam
OK, good but not great
Don't understand all the hype Prince gets. Album was boring it blended in and didn't even notice when it finished. 3/10
Fun set of songs with what felt like carefully crafted pop and funk. Concepts were interesting overall, and the structures of each track prevented the whole album from becoming too repetitive. Certain songs did overstay their welcome I think, and some of the dance/percussive aspects were too droning for a casual listen. Character and content shone through consistently, so there were very few generic moments. 5.5/10
This is a pretty solid but unfortunately frontloaded album in my opinion. The whole first disc is solid and if that's all the album was I'd give it a 5/5 but the second disc I could really take or leave, which dilutes the album as a whole. If 0.5 stars were available it'd definitely be a 3.5 but since it's nearly half an album that I could take or leave I'm going to round down to 3. Also, was kind of naively surprised that this album and the song '1999' came out in the early 1980s. As a kid I just remember this song getting a resurgence in 1999, so I assumed he released it sometime around then. Standout Tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R., International Lover
It was fun! I'd listen to it again if it came up but not sure how often I'd seek it out.
Un poco rollo. Está bien, pero no me ha llamado la atención. Están bien 11. International Lover y
Interesting. . . The first two tracks 1999 and red corvette are bangers. How does the rest hold up? Answer: not that well. I mean, Prince is obviously a unique and crazy talent. But, the last nine songs on the album are synth pop from 1982, and don't leave an impression on me. "Free" is a good song, but the rest are meh. . .
3.5/5 Notable songs: 1999, little red corvette, D.M.S.R., International Lover My first Prince album, also the longest album I’ve listened to all the way through. Enjoyable
Some good hits but it needs to grow on you
Definitely was the baby before the full-blown beauty of Purple Rain. A lot more radio hit-type songs, again some sameiness. Really vibed with more of the songs on the latter half of the album, sounds more like standard Prince tbh. 3 or 3.25ish
Da e greit, men har aldri skjønt meg heilt på prince
Fun poppy rock. Did tend to wander a bit
mood
Pretty solid. Never really liked prince but I kinda get it now
Starts great…. I like the funk vibes… but it Ends not as good - some songs go on too long for me.
okay liked the vibe, not rlly for me but very good
String a side, b side dragging
Yeah good. Probably wouldn't put it on my regular play list though.
Starts great then becomes samesy for the last 8 tracks. Felt like I was in the opening credits of an 80s movie for the first 30 seconds of every song but got bored each time after that
obviously like 1999 otherwise is alright. Definitely not bad
The vocal is heavily processed sometimes and surprisingly unpolished at times? Very synth and sample based music. Sonically complex. Sometimes the screams are startling. Prince has a fantastic singing voice. But he also sounds like he's topless rubbing his nipples while he's singling.
What began as a solid 4 to 5 slowly devolved into a straight 3 for me. Some highlights, but also some filler. Nothing to see here, keep humping along...
I still struggle to really get into Prince. I can tell he's good but some of his songs just don't resonate. That said, there's a couple of crackers on this album.
🤙
Fun album but not my thing, also had more smutty lyrics than I expected lol
Was better than I expected. Although not much more than background music for me.
3.4 Kraft work heavy
Really liked the start, maybe went on a little long but deserves another listen and may go up to 4 stars
catchy. Maybe would have been able to enjoy it better had I been born back then, because now it sounds like generic dance music
Electrofunk Rock n' Soul. So close to a 4, but personally it's a little to explicit for my prudish nature. Best Song(s): 1999, D.M.S.R., International Lover Future Listening: Mostly yes
Started off good then petered off
Prince is insanely talented and there’s some catchy tunes here but I can’t give everything 4/5 and this is the first one where I’m gonna rate this at mid.
Funky. Apart from the title track and Little Red Corvette, there isn't much here to be enthused about.
I suspect that "1999" and "Little Red Corvette," beyond their groove appeal, have resonated with so many because each are unique takes on universal themes, masterfully expressed. This is the power of the greatest lyricists/vocalists---to convey emotions or insights that we all have but do not commonly recognize or articulate, and use their vocals like paint on canvas to further communicate the concept and corresponding emotions, so that the combination feels like an expression of the listeners own soul. I did not find that appeal with the other tracks on this album, though they are musically similar to the first two. "Little Red Corvette" and APC's "Magdalena" are similar in theme, and may represent their category's highest achievements.
# 82 : The albums ok, starts really well, a couple of hits draw you in, but it’s a bit long…. Little Red Corvette 06/10/2023
Hyper-sexual and hyper-funky. Very unique, especially for 1982, I'm sure. Fav tracks: Delirious, Lady Cab Driver, 1999
It's aight
Very 90s sound
Meh
Unbelievably strong start, drags a bit in the middle but closes strong.
Prince invents Final Fantasy Chocobo music and talks about sex a lot. There are zero reasons for this to be over 70 minutes long. It might be fun, but do you know what's also fun? Huffing lead paint. Really makes you think.
Pretty iconic, especially 1999. I'll have to delve into it a little more I think.
Curti bastante o começo porém acho que fica super repetitivo no final
feels like 1999
Dynamisch schnell und Mal langsam
Ehhhh, it's not bad, most of the songs are too long and I think something in the water is obnoxious and lady cab driver just feels a bit cringe. I think i expected to like this and have come away feeling somewhat underwhelmed, its a 3 but only just
I don’t think I’m a big Prince fan. I liked Sign O the Times a lot, this was just okay.
Ok
The opening salvo are possibly two of the best pop songs ever written. After this brilliance I’ve always been disappointed with 1999. A number of the songs are too long and don’t scale those same dizzy heights.
Some ups and downs, but overall pretty good, which is expected from Prince
This album starts of with 2 absolute classics...and then there's the rest. I was really disappointed that nothing else was particularly enjoyable to my ears. Maybe a controversial take but I'm starting to think that Prince just excelled at singles (and even some of those are just okay) and wasn't a great full album artist. Come at me, bro. A 3 just for the 2 singles. It would easily be a 2 if not for those.
Some cracking tracks but largely not for me.
Some futuristic sounds by Prince, looking forward by 17 years and not being that much far from truth. The problem is that this future music is not really the best outcome, of all possible scenarios. Mixing r&b, rock, pop and some electronic sounds resulted in a very average album, which at the time, I believe had to be revolutionary. Prince was named Miles Davis of pop/rock, which might be true, because he mastered so many different genres, but this album on its own doesn't really appeal to me. I'll be happy to listen to other records by him, to see how much he changed his style later on.
Day 115 Prince has always been a difficult one for me: on paper I should love his music, but when I listen to him, I find myself having a hard time; I don't dislike him, at all, it's just that I don't get the hype, which is probably deserved by the way. I feel kind of left out. Still, I like Dirty Mind, I like Sign O' The Times, and I like some of Purple Rain and some of Around the World in a Day. While listening to 1999 for the challenge, I finally understood what puts me off him: I can't hear a band, nor can I hear a one-man band, which would be totally fine as well. I can't hear a production either, or more precisely I hear a hollow production; all I can hear is toys, and don't get me wrong, I like synths and some (if not all) synth-based music. He probably sounds kind of detached from his music to my ears, or I am just unable to connect with him. These were my thoughts while listening to the first three songs, which according to the book make for a perfect way to introduce the album. Then D.M.S.R. happened and things started to gel; a few spins later I still think this is the standout track for me with all that funk upfront. Automatic kind of goes back to the sound of the prior tracks but now it works better for me; the slapping bass solo is a nice touch, even if it feels a bit buried in the mix. The synth parts become much more interesting on Something in the Water. All the Critics Love U in New York is another highlight, and finally International Lover points towards Purple Rain the song. All in all my perception of Prince hasn't changed much but I did found something to like on here. I guess I will keep trying as I have been doing during all these years. "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth" is quite the line though, and it's worth the whole album honestly.
It starts with 2 timeless classics then slowly fades from my interest as it goes on. The songs are mostly too long for me.
I knew 2 songs and most of the rest of the album was only suitable for dancing IMO
Not my cup of tea
Okey
Pretty groovy, but it gets quite long in the tooth TBH.
Decent, got tired of princes voice tho
Best Prince album so far. 3/5
I get the appeal, but wouldn't consider this anything visionary.
Fun, holds up pretty well
