Succulent all around, you will keep coming back for another taste.
This is the soundtrack of my senior year in high school
Best bdsm synthwave album of all time from the best bdsm synthwave band of all time, imo
This is the album that made me a fan all those years ago. A sound all their own. Vocals & lyrics hit just about perfectly. Great live band as well. Entertaining.
Excellent
Oh, this is gonna hit hard on a Friday. Super enjoyable vibes, wish it was longer. 5*. I've been hearing enjoy the silence for forever, but all of this still sounds so fresh. No bad tracks. Highlights: personal jesus, enjoy the silence (<3)
Obra maestra, corto y con temazos. Poco más se puede pedir.
I'm going to write a lot, but after all: 'Words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm.' Album 27 is my 6th 5 stars album. It's very simple: it's not really goth, it's not really rock, it's not really pop, it's just 100% Depeche Mode at its peak. As I'm writing this, I'm of course also thinking about the Depeche Mode concert I saw, with a nice live rendition of 'Enjoy The Silence', absolute classic on this album, but also 'Policy Of Truth' and 'Personal Jesus' stood out in the set. A single negative point is that most tracks are quite long and the full ending of Enjoy The Silence is quite weird.
Excellent
This album SLAPS. "World in My Eyes" has great production, very alluring and energetic. "Halo" has a nice melody. "Policy of Truth" is very evocative lyrically. "Clean" is a dramatic, pulsing song and a cool closer. Even the less interesting songs, like "Blue Dress" and "Sweetest Perfection" include great lead ins for the heavy hitters on the album. The really famous singles like "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" still shine and are especially well out together, and the album version includes long, flowing outros to transition to the next song. Each song is either excellent in its own right or serves the flow of the whole piece. Such excellent production value that creating sultry and eerie and danceable moments. Very well constructed, especially for the album-listening experience.
10/10 👍
10/10.
Love love loveeee this. Absolutely no misses in June yet. 10/10
I guess I should’ve got into Depech Mode way earlier. Loved this! Dreamy vocals, great lyrics, and rad music. 5/5
A really amazing electronic album. All 9 tracks are just brilliant. "Enjoy the Silence" is just another level. No 80s cheesiness to be found here. This is the beginning of a new era of awesome music. 5 stars for "Violator".
THIS WAS SOOOO FUCKING FIRE i feel so futuristic so crazy so goth so awesome i need to come back to this. Like the end made me feel like i shouldn’t listen to any more music. wowoeowow
All-time classic
Already know the music here
Excellent synth pop! So many classic tracks that combine great pop performance and writing with production that, with an good ear for timbre, has managed to aged gracefully. Really hard to decide between giving it a 4 or a 5 but the making-me-want-to-dance factor brings it over the edge. Eternal!
This album is perfect. There is not a bad song on it.
Day133 - it’s 1990 mtv is still huge and this album was everywhere. the top 40 was all over the place musically but this felt like something new and it still holds up today
Loved this album, full of bangers. Genius
Great album, I'm not a fan of such minor and slow music, but I liked it 🌲
Depeche Mode at their absolute finest. This album came out in 1990 and it set the scene for the next 25 years of electronic music. Oh and this was already their SEVENTH.
Good music
This album really ushered in the 90s to me. For me, it has held up for decades.
Love this album
"Let my body do the moving and let my hands do the soothing" is the sexiest lyric of all time.
Macabre, personal, and paranoid, Violator is a unique album. Depeche Mode made history with this work, merging obscure textures with lyrics dealing with pseudo-religion and obsession. Violator's influence can be perceived in different genres even today (2024). I cannot have enough from 90's Depeche Mode.
So grim and dramatic but so catchy and so danceable. It shouldn't make sense but the result is the most captivating music.
One of the better albums on the list. a pure treat to listen to.
Amazing simply amazing.
Depeche Mode's perfected approach to synthpop. While songs like Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are already praised for their memorable hooks and incredible atmosphere, the rest of the album manages to hit much of the same stride. Violator is the perfect mix of dark ambiance and catchy rhythms, executed perfectly by the use of synths and drum machines and layered over Dave Gahan's semisweet baritone vocals. I cannot say anything bad about this album; it's top quality from front to back.
Not every track is a 10 but it’s all good solid stuff, with some moments of real inspiration thrown in, and lots of interesting sound design too. This album improves on Music For The Masses mainly by containing 2 absolutely massive singles (or should that be 3? Policy of Truth is a banger that I’m not sure I’d heard before, somehow). Enjoy The Silence kicking in after the embers of Waiting for the Night die out is a real goosebumps moment (the good kind, not the scary kind). It’s a 9/10 album for me, or 4.5/5.
I used to think Depeche Mode were gloomy doom mongers but in hindsight they might still be that but are brilliant at it.
I had forgotten that Depeche Mode is great
Duh.
Listened Before? Y This is an all-time classic of pop music. I know, I know, it's supposed to be an underground record or whatever but the bottom line is - this is a pop record over half the time, and DM were one of the best of the 80s at making pop songs. Mostly catchy, usually well-written and performed, and occasionally repetitive... this one is a real banger (almost) beginning to end. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Halo, Policy of Truth
Heard of the group - never listened to any of their songs.
Outstanding album, distinctive and so many bands to follow that I like pull from it in various ways (Arcade Fire, The Faint, Franz Ferdinand, DFA 1979.) Halo is just a momentously great song, as is Enjoy the Silence obviously. As much as I enjoy the punchier parts (synth and beat alike), the use of ambient noise throughout is I think my favourite part - creates a very full sounding record.
Love this album
listening to "personal jesus" on easter monday hits different
I fucking love this album. I have listened to it a ton of times and it’s great.
I love the mode!!!!
All I ever wanted, all I ever needed.
Love me some dark, lush but also catchy music
Great album. Since I'm an 80s electro fan, my knowledge of whole albums by DM is shamefully poor. I was glad to begin to rectify that. Loved the whole vibe. More of this, please!
All killer, no filler.
I’ve only properly “discovered” Depeche Mode relatively recently and I don’t know what took me so long. Dance music in my late teens, probably. This is excellent. Five stars
Peak 90's!
I didn't realize that I already knew this band. I kept thinking hey Depeche Mode sound like the Personal Jesus band. Oh yeah, I'm stupid. Also recognized "Enjoy the Silence" and "Policy of Truth" all of which were great. The sound was incredibly unique even for synthpop, I felt. It was refreshingly something new to my ears.
Sturluð plata. Ein af þessum stóru 90's. Dark og electro og bara allt gott við þetta.
I am an idiot. I’ve spent the last 20 years of my life thinking Depeche Mode was Cheap Trick.
Arguably their best, most consistent album.
Fantastic 80s electro!
Amazing album. Such a great sound, I really love this era of music. Dangerous was my favourite track.
Stappfull plata af fkn góðum lögum. Elska þetta!
Elsker det 5/5 Dog er sweetest perfection shit i starten, dog vender det og bliver en konge sang!
This album is a 10/10, but like A TEN OUT OF TEN. Like the type of 10/10 that makes other 10/10s a 9/10
Dang, I was expecting to hate this. All killer!
I love this band and I love this album. Violator is dark, stylish and full of atmosphere. It balances electronic precision with real emotion, and it feels completely timeless. Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are obvious classics, but the depth of the album is what makes it special. Halo is a huge highlight for me. Brooding and powerful, with that unmistakable Depeche Mode edge. World in My Eyes sets the tone perfectly, sleek and confident. Even Dangerous from the later reissue is a brilliant addition and easily stands alongside the main tracks. It is an album that never loses its mood. Every song feels deliberate and part of a bigger picture. Favourite song: Halo, Dangerous or Enjoy the Silence Least favourite song: Waiting for the Night Album artwork: Iconic cover. Simple, bold and instantly recognisable
Classic!
tbh, this album kicked ass. I dunno i just really was feeling it. Never listened to a full Depeche Mode album before and this one felt consistent the whole way through
One of my favorite albums ever!
Koska Oltsi muutat pysyvästi Tambereeelle? Hyvä. Aika 5/5 kamaa
PERFECT
Great
A great record! There is nothing more to say
I love this album, though it does have a few 'less good' tracks; overall, it's a five-star album for me.
I love synthpop like this. No bullshit, just big fat synths and some drums pounding away, catchy as hell. The singles are all classics but there isn't even a hint of a weak song on here in totality.
Probably my most overplayed CD through late middle school / high school. Hours on repeat playing Sega channel…great album.
This was really good.
Love it
A truly great and atmospheric record that just falls short of perfection in my eyes. I was actually fairly heartbroken to realize the 3 tracks I didn’t connect with on the record were the Martin Gore performances, seeing as I have such great respect for him as a songwriter. Dave Gahan’s vocals are just such a perfect match on the rest of the album that those songs lacked the pull and power I felt from the rest. Still excellent, highly recommended, it’s a dark emotional masterpiece. Editing to say I relistened, and I think the top tracks are good enough to push me to like a 4.5 that I’ll round up. Enjoy The Silence is an all-time great song in particular. Top tracks: World In My Eyes, Personal Jesus, Halo, Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth, Clean
Dark and broody it all the best ways. Sounds so 80s, but also so modern (early NIN in a lot of ways). Also enjoy the silence is truly one of the best songs ever created
Oh, yeah. Just inventive, but true to their brand. So easy to listen to again and again. When you get to your seventh album, it's either dialing it in or being experimental. They've somehow managed to be creative, and in a sense, re-inventive. Nothing seems stale or indulgent.
This has seemed to be the last great Depeche Mode album. A bit more mature, dark, brooding, with Enjoy the Silence and Policy of Truth being some of the band's best songs. The rest of the album is strong and enjoyable.
This would be a perfect candidate for a major remix. These songs are awesome, and actually sound really good. But i'd love to hear them mixed HUGE with today's sensibilities. At any rate, love this record and will go back again and again.
one of the best albums ever
Excellent. Loved it!
Es la primera vez que escucho un disco completo de este grupo. Me ha gustando bastante.
All good
Moody and sometimes a bit camp at the same time. This album feels special, the hits are there and surprisingly still great, but this had me engaged from opening to end. Fantastic stuff
2nd Depeche Mode album on the list and 2nd 5/5 for them. Words are very unnecessary here.
This was peak, I really forgot how Depeche Mode sort of broke into this new vibey electronic genre
Brit-Pop goes Synthie - at its best
Ein sehr gutes Album?
Took a while but then got into the overpowered electro-rock - listened to ‘Waiting for the Night’ whilst waiting at a trains station at night and woo howdy
Great record and part of the soundtrack to my school life. Love this - obviously have on vinyl!
Блин, ну это абсолют бэнгер. Каждый трек слушался с кайфом. Дык ещё на этом альбоме personal jesus и enjoy the silence, песни знакомые с детства. думаю, пятёрка
One of the greatest pieces of music recorded
Great album
Ngl han zersch nid denkt dasis album sooo guet werd finde aber do hets ja paar gröbersti legende songs druf. Depeche mode isch irgendwie immer so e band gsi woni vo so 2 songs kennt ha aber nie würklich gloset han. Au wenn mich jetzt nid jedes lied vom album us de Socke haut sind songs wie personal Jesus und enjoy the silence eifach soooo schön dasi es 5i muess geh. 4.7/5
Uff aafang mega strong, es isch so bitz electronica und plötzlich sicki chords ine. Sweetest perfection bitz mid, so chilleds mit de droge references. Omggg i lieb peronal jesus. Es isch so en bop. Oooh i han vergesse dass enjoy the silence au uf dem album isch. Soo sick. Aso hans gester gloset und gfunde starchs 4i und hüt morge wenni paar songs nomol los isches e 5i. Verstoh aber mega wenn mer dem e 3 git.
first tape i ever wore out. millions of listens to this record.
It's not just the songwriting but the sound design is also exquisite. I've messed around using synthesizers to write music before and could barely scratch the surface. I can only imagine the untold hours spent on this album in production painstakingly perfecting every sound. The sounds chosen throughout the album lend to the brooding nature of the album (the backing vocals run through a synthesizer are my favorite touch, especially on Waiting for the Night). Something in this music just resonates deep in my soul on a level I can't put words to. Stirring, sinister, sensual, provocative, perturbing, primal. Highlights (besides the hits), Sweetest Perfection, Halo, Blue Dress, kind of all of it? Note: I listened to the 2006 remaster with bonus tracks
Not a lover of Depeche Mode but I am happily surprised from this album.
I wore out the compact disc already
Violator was such a surprise when it was released and it is still an exceptional album these many years later. Gahan’s lyrics, shot through with his addiction and fascination with heroin, are suggestive and grimy, set amidst synths and dance beats that have been dragged into back alleys where addicts are slumped against damp, graffiti’d brick walls. But there they spring blooms in shafts of sunlight, truly lying in the gutter but looking at the stars. “Policy of Truth” is a marvel. “Personal Jesus” is wry and threatening. And “Enjoy the Silence” blends romanticism and the confessional. Flood’s production is daring and orchestral, making the band’s electronica speak to the heart and groin. There are some low points in the album but they are transcended by the huge heights of its epic wonders.
Obra maestra y lo que me metió de cabeza en Depeche para los restos. 5/5.
I thought there was going to be just the one song I knew by them; half the album were hits that I love when I'm in the right mood. The other half were great songs I'd never heard before.
Yeah I've listen to this one a ton.. Electronic, goth and pop all perfectly mixed into this moody package, I love this album.
2 albums in a row I know back to front and inside out but this one is an instant perfect score. Have always loved this album, it's another one from delivering papers on cold dark mornings, this the perfect soundtrack to keep me moving while suiting that atmosphere. From the very first note. Despite having heard the singles to death I still enjoy hearing them, but it's the album tracks, so many absolutely five star songs. Basically all of them. I always tend to prefer the Martin Gore lead songs somehow but Dave is also great. The stark difference in tone between the two vocals has always added extra variety to the band's sound. Favourites are probably Halo, Waiting for the Night and World in my Eyes. Obviously also Enjoy the Silence.
Låt oss hylla Markus Vall, En atlet och tänkare av gudomlig rang.
Considering I gave all three Pet Shop Boys albums 5 stars on this project, my vote for Depeche Mode is no surprise. Violator is similar to Pet Shop Boys--and Pet Shop Boys say this album in particular inspired their Behaviour album! Depeche has more of a darker, high-strung tone; PSB is typically smoother and lighter. But the two bands certainly love their synth! The vibes are EVERYTHING. I'm absolutely obsessed. the vocals are perfect for Depeche mode's genre; they don't overwhelm the music and they add just enough that you're left wanting more. That allows Depeche Mode to come across as just slightly spooky and sinister. You never know what to expect! And the album flows so beautifully, which is definitely assisted by the conforming tone. I have nothing bad to say about this album, but I also don't want to go onto the next one.
Violator is such a fascinating album. On one hand, it stands as one of the best composed and most memorable examples of new wave music. On the other hand, this album completely defies the new wave genre and makes it so much more. At the turning point from the 80s into the 90s, this album manages to also accomplish the feat of being an incredible dark wave, goth, alt rock, and industrial album. Depeche Mode was at the forefront of that transition period with this deliciously edgy, dark album. Even today, there isn't another electronic album quite like Violator. The production on this album is also incredibly crisp. There are a lot of electronic elements at play, and they're all incredibly well mixed and yet distinguishable and audible. The depth here is truly impressive. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention how outstanding Martin Gore's vocals are on this album. The perfect mix of genres that Violator achieved is also the perfect intersection for Gore's vocals. Dark wave, new wave, goth, industrial, alternative...it matters not; his voice is primed for it all, and it really shows on this album. This album just combines so many of the things I enjoy musically, and I can't not give it a 5.
This album bizarrely passed me by despite being an 80s kid into The Cure, a-Ha, Erasure. I caught up with it only in '23 after acquiring a bunch of free DM vinyl, and became one of my most listened to albums that year. It's nuts that I was far more familiar with Tori Amos' Enjoy The Silence than DMs. It's a brilliant record, that still sounds completely fresh and exciting.
A favorite. Liked every song.
Great
Masterpiece
One of the greatest albums of all time.
One of the best ever!!!
I bought this on cd when it was released, and am happy to report that it still fuckin slaps.
LOVE
Iconic album. Don't have much to add, it's such a great listen and impeccable vibes.
I have always loved the their huge hit “Personal Jesus” from this album! I had no idea how much I was missing by not listening to rest of the album. The album gives off the vibes of the 80s but the use of synths makes it sound more futuristic. Definitely the best album Ive heard from this generator so far!
This is very good. I liked it. I'll probably check out more of them. I've heard of them quite a bit lately. They seem to be going through a bit of a renaissance. 5 stars.
One of my favorite records of all time. All the singles are amazing and still sound modern today.
Did we line dance to “Personal Jesus” at school dances in the 90s? Is this album in our vinyl collection? Have we sung the song “Clean” so often to our six year old when she gets out of the bathtub that now she sings it herself when she’s done with her shower? Do we love Depeche Mode and especially Violator in this house? A resounding yes to all. A dark turn for an already dark new wave band, this album confronts the band’s abundant drug use in a chilling and incredible way. Not a single miss on the whole thing. Contemplative and weird. I love it and know my rating without having to put the needle down…but I happily will.
This is one of my top 20 albums of all time. It was literally on auto repeat for about a decade.
This has been a favorite since the day it came out. Amazing album. 10/10.
There is nothing like the feeling you get when listening to this album late at night with headphones and just letting it permeate.
Depeche Mode. This is a great album. Standouts: Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, Policy of Truth, World in My Eyes, Sweetest Perfection, Waiting for the Night Others: Halo, Blue Dress 4.5 / 5
Certifiable classic
Depeche Mode are very good at doing two things: Creating music that is intriguing and finding ways which cause the listener to feel uncomfortable. With Violator, it seems the band had captured the sound they had been chasing and building up to from the beginning. On previous albums, at least what I'm familiar with, there seemed to be moments of disconnect. Either song elements didn't land very well or they may have felt slightly distasteful. Perhaps that was always the point but in contrast, everything about this album feels very concise, even relaxed. It still creates an uncomfortable space but it does so in a more artistic and refined way which intends to challenge. I'm sure this was due to changing up how they wrote and recorded but it's also the presence of Flood, which helped pave the way for groups like Nine Inch Nails. The atmosphere and attitude of this album definitely points to things such as The Downward Spiral. And similar to said album, Violator's selling point is the mood it paints. Curious thing though... Am I the only one who feels like the songs on Violator, with the exception of a few singles, don't always stick? What I mean is once one song is over, I almost immediately forget what the previous song sounded like. Perhaps this is a mark of an album which works very well as a singular piece or it could be my brain focusing on the details of the current song while it works to compartmentalize and compress the details of the previous. I have a growing consensus this is due to a collection of songs that have hooks but focus more on building layers rather than relying on usual song structure. Let me be clear, in the brief time spent with this record, every song hits in a special way, and I think each one seques perfectly into the next. I really enjoyed this album and believe it deserves the praise it receives. One final note which I find interesting. Personal Jesus, possibly their most recognized song, and probably sung by a good number of evangelical Christians, may have assumed the song advocates the importance and freedom of a personal relationship with Jesus. If you simply read the lyrics, it's easy to make that connection and definitely holds some ambiguity. However, Dave Gahan's vocal delivery, the samples used, and the darker instrumental passages should queue you into a deeper and more challenging purpose. Disquiesed as a dancy pop song, Personal Jesus seems to address a concern of how easily we make God into our own image, feeding our insecurities, leading to damaged relationships, and fueled by corporate greed and power. To think Depeche Mode wrote a "Christian" song might come from someone unfamiliar with songs like Blasphemous Rumors. I believe, however, this was Gehan's and Gore's attempt to caution their listeners to be mindful when it comes to religion and relationships rather than to blatantly reject a benevolent creator. It's also probably about herion, too. Summing up. I was really glad to finally hear all of this. A solid Gothic synth art pop album that is successfully engaging in it's ambiguity and texture.
Love Depeche Mode...this album is all killer no filler. 4.5/5
Policy of Truth, Enjoy the Silence
I really liked this! It's got a really sleek cool factor to it. Like a calm electro something. But more 80s synth poppy at times than I expected. Don't know how to explain it, but I like it. Great use of dissonance. Side note: this guy sounds like Bo Burnham sometimes (track 2). Also, I never knew Personal Jesus wasn't actually by Marilyn Manson.
Wonderful surprise. I was only familiar with the hits, but this was in general a really strong album as a whole. Perfect for the rainy autumn afternoons.
I wasn't sure I would be a big fan of this album going into it, but I was very pleasantly surprised by just how much I liked it. There's something about this album compared to other synth-heavy albums I've listened to already (i.e. Behaviour, both LCD Soundsystem albums, etc.) that just really clicks with me. The sound is synthy, but also quite a bit darker than the others. I feel like I shouldn't have liked the sound much given my current track record, but it just works for me for some reason. The vocals stuck out to me as being quite good. The lyrics and subject matter are somewhat connected throughout each song without it seeming too repetitive. I don't really know what else to say. I think this album is pretty cool. Very high 4/5. EDIT: This might actually be one of my favorite albums of all time. 5/5.
Night core but actually *night*core
My favorite DP album. Depeche Mode, not Double Penetration.
Iconic banger after iconic banger.
3/1001 I’m afraid I’m finally turning into my mother. I’m convinced this album is good. Really good, actually.
I liked it! Good vibes, good beats, good lyrics
The best Depeche Mode album where they perfected their sound and production. One of these albums were all the songs are placed in the right order, the perfect flow. Their b-sides from this period are also very good, but below the songs that made it to the album.
Outstanding album. Strong vocals, catchy songs, great production.
Great album, good memories
This is more of a 4.5 for me but I think it will go up with more listens. If I were a teen when this came out I would have totally been goth because of it.
TIL Policy of Truth did not, in fact, come out in 1985. Loved it.
Classics, some of the songs are just pure joy to lesson to and others have some nice touches to em. Also love the transition on the last 2 song
Personal Jesus is an absolute banger!!
10/10 Always loved this album! A darker turn for DM.
Depeche Mode is one of the few bands that I still like since my youth. This album is one of their best. A lot of memorable songs, and a few fillers. That is true for most of their albums. Here everything is just better than most of their other albums. Good memories.
I saw Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service last night and for their final song both bands came out and played a cover of Enjoy the Silence so this is a surprising but fitting pick. Some thoughts: 1) Drums were invented to sound like this 2) The genre is described as new wave/synth pop, and that is technically correct, but what it really is, in its soul, is music for weird sad people (me) to listen to in their basements or in clubs before sulking off somewhere else. Every generation gets one. 3) The Smiths if their drums were for fucking gladiators. 4) Probably could have done without three instrumental tracks in a row to close the album 5) This, to me, represents people truly internalizing that synths and drum machines are actual instruments rather than whatever was going on in songs like Simply Irresistible
Love it. Classic.
TURN THIS SHIT UUUP
I've been a fan of Depeche Mode for awhile now, but only really knew the greatest hits. They're one of those bands whose discography I've wanted to deep-dive, but just haven't made it a priority. It's nice that this is helping me along with that. I love 80s new wave synth pop and I already knew I love Depeche Mode, so of course this was great.
An all time classic. What can I say except it still sounds amazing
One of my roommates from college properly introduced me to Depeche Mode in the early '90s and they have become one of the stalwarts in my collection. This album is probably their most successful and most accessible and helped get me over my aversion to electronic music (especially percussion). Out of the 9 tracks on this album, there might be one that was iffy for me. 8/9 solid tracks is a pretty amazing achievement for a tough grader. Consistent feel with a range of emotion. For those skeptical, I would start with "Enjoy the Silence" and "Policy of Truth". For those who rather a good driving song, "Personal Jesus" would be your thing. There's something for everyone on this album.
Depeche Modes break thru. No filler, and an artistic and commercial peak. Love it.
Pretty much a perfect album, although I probably err in favour of the later Ultra due to Mark Bell's production. All the tracks are great, with a perfect balance of strange experimental noises and perfectly written, arranged songs. In particular, World in my Eyes and Enjoy the Silence are two of the greatest synth-pop songs ever written. Definitely one people should experience for themselves.
OS MAIORAIS
Brilliant
I remember my mom had this CD, but I never actually listened to it. Deep, moody synth with shoegazey vocals; this is exactly what I expected with Depeche Mode. I didn't realize this album was so deep in their discography. If Spotify is to be trusted this is their ninth album -- they don't make em like this anymore. Personal Jesus is a great song. Always used to think it was "reach out and touch face" growing up; gives the song a different feel. Really dig the vibe out of Halo. Deep synth bass line with a drum machine clap + tambourine. Lot of depth as the song progresses. Actually get some Lotus vibes from certain elements of this. Waiting for the Night is a really cool atmospheric song. Sparse electronic instrumental with almost Pink Floyd Echoes vibes around the 4 minute mark. Hard to believe this was created in 1990 -- if this were released today it would still feel novel. Production is on point; lot of space between the instruments and textures without feeling disjoint. 5 songs in this has the makings of a strong 4 leaning 5. I'm really feeling this one. And track 6 being Enjoy the Silence doesn't hurt their argument. Great song that always gets my head bobbing. Just realized that hte drum break at the 1:03 mark is what Lotus sample during the intro of Grayrigg -- or at least it sounds identical when played live, their studio recording doesn't sound the same (probably for a reason). Clean starts with a bass line that once again reminds of Echoes. This isn't exactly an album to get hype to or anything, but I really enjoy it. Apparently this is the last song of the actual released album; really hate that Spotify doesn't denote that in any way, or make available the non-remastered version. At any point, the subsequent instrumental tracks are a nice addition even if they do feel out of place relative to the rest of the body. All said, I'm a surprised 5 / 5 on this album. I knew there was a large following for Depeche Mode and some significant respect in the music critic community and I totally see why. This is a 33 year old album that would feel fresh if released today.
FUCK yes I love this album. So synthy and dark. Got into this last year when Andy Fletcher died and decided to give em a listen. What a great way to start an album. Immediately screams 80's but goes into a sweet synth-poppy loop reminiscent of Kraftwerk. So much going on here. Sweetest Perfection is such a pretty song. Especially when the strings come in and then bounces right back into more sounds. Then that solo(?) at the end. Whew. Personal Jesus is probably the one I know Depeche Mode by the most. Heard it tons of times on the radio but is one where if you listen to on purpose fucking slamajamma's. Halo. Very easy song to bob your head to. Love the build up. Waiting for the Night might be my least favorite song on this album but still is pretty groovy. Does a really good job of keeping me in though even though it doesn't necessarily go anywhere. Enjoy the Silence is sooooo fucking good. Words are veryyyy unnecessaryyyyy. Bangin my head to this bad boi. Also the end of the song is straight out of a Pink Floyd album. Policy of Truth has that insane bass or synth or whatever that sounds sick. Love this song. Blue Dress has that music stop and just awesome background sounds. Like every song. Yeah, if that end of Enjoy the Silence didn't convince you Clean absolutely proves these guys love their Floyd. Straight out of One of These Days. Fuck yes. This is an incredible sounding album and actually makes 80's music sound fucking awesome.
Finally something good. The list has been in the doldrums for a while, languishing between 1 and 2 stars

One of My Dear’s favorites. Maybe absolute favorite.
This album has always sounded antiseptic to me, there is no spare note or phrase, it’s basically perfectly executed, but somewhat robotic, like music a machine or maybe a serial killer would truly enjoy. Sweetest Perfection gives me straight up Jeffrey Dahmer vibes. Personal Jesus is a jam, that twanging riff with the stompy beat is timeless. Enjoy the Silence and Policy of Truth are also great singles. Overall not a bad or even mediocre song on this album. If it didn’t come out in 1990 I would’ve said it was one of the best albums of the 80s, but I’ll say it’s one of the best albums recorded in the 80s.
One of my favorites, almost an entire album of absolute bangers.
Depeche Mode's masterpiece. A perfect, stripped down synth-pop album. It's hard to pick a favorite song.
Quite honestly the best one so far. There wasn’t a single song that I didn’t like or wanted to skip. Very surprised too!
I really enjoy this album. I hadn't heard this band before!
One to definitely listen to again. I had heard a few of their songs before so I was rather glad to see this album ('Enjoy the Silence', my favourite Depeche Mode song, is on here).
A dark, edgy, gothic, Synth-Pop masterpiece. The only songs I knew from this were Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence, but this album was a joy to listen to. Extremely well-produced and polished, like an obelisk of smooth black obsidian. Very very good. Favourite: Personal Jesus
Their best
Genre-defining synth pop with the dark/gothic vibe, classic
Absolutely timeless. Every song on this album is at least good, while most are excellent.
This is the album where Gahan goes full BDSM and Depeche Mode took their rightful place alongside the pantheon of 80s Brit alternative superstars - and in 1990, too! So much to love here and such lurking threats hanging over every track. Well well done.
Cant remember the last time i enjoyed an album this much
I’m totally biased, but I love this album. Enjoy the silence is an all-timer for me.
i knew i’d like the hit but wow the rest of this album is even better. i’m gonna listen to more depeche now
Banger
Never been really a fan of this band, even thought I've been listening some of their songs during a long time. This is the first full record I listen from them, and it was really good. Full with a lot of bangers and comercial hits from the 90's, starting with the classic "World in my eyes", a song that at first I didn´t liked, but now it's one of my favorites. Then come "Personal Jesus", such a good song. Being followed by "Halo" probably my favorite song of the album, and one of best Depeche's songs for me. "Waiting fo the night" is beautiful, but too long for me. Then comes the timeless "Enjoy the silence" this record version is two minutes longer than the single one, honestly I like both, this is a timeless song. Followed by "Policy of truth" all I have to say is BASS. Next "Blue Dress" I don't get this song, but it's really beautiful to listen, so I guess I liked it. But what takes the credits, its the bridge with the next song "Clean" almost feeled like a Pink Floyd brige, and I love it. Even though I felt the song kind deep. Then "Dangerous", is more easy to digest, and I liked it. Then comes "Mephisto" which made me feel like if I was entering a dark and magic dimension. And the ending track "Sibeling", I believe the most boring track here. Anyway, this is truly a classic 90's album, a totally must listen. Fav Track: Halo, Enjoy the silence, Blue Dress, Policy of truth, Mephisto, Dangerous.
Fuck yeah, Violator is one of the best all time albums. Heard it front to back many times. Easy 5 stars from me.
I have to take a moment here to gripe yet again about how fucking stupid it is that Spotify doesn't have the originally released version to listen to. I HATE that I'm always stuck with these remastered versions or expanded editions. I don't want all this extra shit. I want to hear the album as it was originally released and originally intended to be heard. FUCK SAKES!!! Why won't they give listeners that option?!? Anyways... this album is a masterpiece, everyone knows it. This is the pinnacle album of Depeche Mode's career, the high watermark of their artistic output if you will. This is as good as synth pop ever gets or will ever be. Personal Jesus is still the standout track, it hits every time I hear it.
Album of the summer for me two summers ago. Start to finish a complete and solid album. I'm pretty sure it got me into synth-based music. After listening to other Depeche Mode releases this one stands out as superior.
Very pleased to have been reminded how great this album was
Great album.
Absolutely brilliant album. Definitely similar to Soda Stereo output of the area which I adore so this was right up my alley. Every song was cinematic, lush, downright dark, and overall a complete experience. Not a track on here that I didn’t love, they were all the absolutely pinnacle of what the genre has to offer. Absolutely masterful songwriting and production. Easily five stars, essential listening.
Goth fuggin music hell yeah

Очень интересно оказаться в моменте, когда альбом выпускался. Мне кажется тогда это был разъеб лютый Алкоальбом: мартини
Depeche Mode! Yes. This is one of my favorite New Wave Albums of all time. It has some of my favorite New Wave songs of all time and and just simply has a tone that the genre has yet to properly replicate before and since.
Own on Vinyl
An almost perfect album cover, ruined by the bands title in an ugly ass grey rectangle. Almost perfect. The music itself though is perfect, or pretty goddamn close.
Was delighted when this album appeared for me this morning. No question that it would be 5 stars, and a wonderful excuse to listen to it again. Stripped back and slinky, this surprised many on release and it still sounds fresh 33 years later.
dark and atmospheric. topics of alienation, interpersonal relationships, addiction. reminiscent of early nine inch nails with lyrics a little less bleak. this album is a masterpiece. highlights: “halo”, “waiting for the night”, “enjoy the silence”, “clean”.
Moody synth-pop goes brrrrrr. Good album to make your whole personality for a few weeks.
4,5
Just great selection of songs
One of my favorite albums of all time. What a great time to generate this record as well, with "Memento Mori" releasing in 2 days. The formula to make a good album is actually very simple - a lot of funny noises that make me go ha ha. This album has a lot of funny noises. I especially like when "Policy of Truth" goes BEEP BOOP BABABAPWOOP. Or when "Personal Jesus" goes BUM BABA BUMBUM. Thank you for reading my deep analysis of this album.
very good my fave song is enjoy the silence
A classic through and through!
Snippet of birdsong almost burst my eardrums. Then Personal Jesus came on and everything was alright. Good album, it grew on me
Great production, consistent vibe, catchy music
It was pretty good
This CD lives permanently in my car, and it's the album I've most listened to over the last 15 years. The first time I saw the Enjoy the Silence video, I was stunned & amazed. I was 14 going on 15 spending time at nerd summer camp when the video comes on in the lounge area of our school. I stopped in my tracks as it started & I couldn't walk away -WHAT IS THIS?! My eyes must've been as big as saucers as I let the song drench me in dark disco synth. There I was, nerdy & weird, instantly in love with Depeche Mode. The album cover still seduces me & I plan on getting that wilted rose tattooed (eventually). Halo, Blue Dress, and Clean are non-radio favorites & I just scored tickets to see them this year on my bday. I'm actually seeing them twice in 2023. It will be undoubtedly different without Fletch, but I AM STOKED. This band is me...14 year old me, 20 something me, 30 & 40 something me, forever me.
THE Greatest album of all time
Love DM
This is probably one of the most perfectly realized albums of the synth pop era. Interestingly, this album didn't show up until 1990, when the genre was petering out into a different sound for the 90s. What works for Depeche Mode here is the darkness that was inherently always a part of their work - that vaguely unsettling and menacing undertone, the elegantly ominous synth arrangements, the complex lyricism that dealt with darker themes. This made the band thrive in ways that their more bubbly peers could not. Then there's Gahan and Gore, the alternatingly commanding and gently emotive vocal core of the group. DM didn't really have any true equals at this point in their career, and this album demonstrates why. It's just about the best thing they ever made. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Personal Jesus, World in My Eyes, Policy of Truth, Halo, Enjoy the Silence, Waiting for the Night, Sweetest Perfection, Blue Dress, Clean
Banger. There's like 3 utter classics on here, and the rest is super good too. 4.5 rounded up because it's basically the progenitor of all of the chilly synth pop that I love.
A masterpiece and a benchmark of the genre. Essential listening. Would give 6 stars. Perfection.
I remember being invited by a girl named Elise in her parents' house in the middle of the woods one night, along with a bunch of other teenage friends. Her parents were away, and the only tangible memory I have of that evening was that we played that record many, many times. The night outside was pitch-dark. Some of our friends stayed in the living room with us. Others disappeared God knows where. I was young, and this was the first time I was listening to Depeche Mode's *Violator* from start to end. But it certainly wasn't the last... No review of mine can properly describe how downright incredible this album is for me. Martin Gore's inspired chord successions, always surprising you at a pitch-perfect moment... Dave Gahan's haunting vocal performance infusing much needed soul into the synthpop proceedings... Fletcher and Wilder's intricate clockwork-like arrangements, filled with rich, evocative soundscapes, almost cinematic in their scope... So many details to fall in love with. This here is the apex of Depeche Mode's discography--pop music to dwarf all other *serious* attempts at it (either then or now), with a dark, twisted undercurrent to make this album a perfect gem. A gem made out of obsidian, as some other review seems to imply here... 'Obsidian'. What an apt word for this record, really. *Violator* proves that under the right set of circumstances, darkness can shine as bright as sunrays through clear glass. So many catchy and illuminating melodies indeed roam throughout this LP. But those melodies are nothing like the usual synthpop routinely spewed forth by other small fry in this overall genre. Because, as catchy as they are, some of those melodies are also heavy with a muted sense of danger. And others subtly suggest a deep, melancholic mood that can leave you speechless. The band also had such a large palette to play with. Blues, r'n'b and rock undertones here clash with glacial timbres and digital sounds that are both as cold as steel--a contrast that brings dynamics rarely explored within the realm of popular music. Of course, here, in this list of songs, are also some of the most famous hits Depeche Mode will always be remembered for (the romantic-yet-lively "Enjoy The Silence" or the quintessentially bluesy "Personal Jesus"...). And the fact that those hits also display lyrics that are iconic all by themselves is just cream on the cake at this point. To be fair, most of the other tracks in *Violator* would have deserved being hit singles in their own right as well, giving a "best of" feel to this LP. As for the couple of cuts that weren't exactly single material ("Halo" and "Blue Dress"), they still have something meaningful to add to the rest of those stellar songs--either because of their nightly mood or the way they echo with the other tracks. Speaking of echoes, I'm currently listening to "Waiting For The Night". A few years ago, I wrote the blueprint of an imaginary sci-fi TV series about young telepaths living in the future. In my mind, this song here was the soundtrack played during the closing titles of that series' first 'season finale', right after a suspenseful cliffhanger. There is indeed both mysterious and breathtaking about this song. Just as there's something equally mysterious and breathtaking about the whole album. In that sense, it makes sense that such music could be used for dark adventures involving youngsters. Waiting for a TV series that would bring this sort of idea to fruition now... I'll probably never write the complete version of that story I had in mind. But the song is still available for me if I want to daydream about it. And all the other cuts from this amazing record can suggest similar visions for me. Visions of a house lost in the woods. Visions of grey mountains and black oceans. Visions of a dancefloor populated by misfits and other drug-addled freaks. Visions of neon signs flickering in the rain. Visions of life and death. I'll never get tired of those visions. And since "words are very unneccessary" to embrace them or fully convey my love for them, I'm going to stop talking now. 5 stars, nothing else. Good luck for the next album that pops up through this app. Number of albums left to review: 662 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 165 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 79 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 93
A classic and righly so
best synthpop album ever
Kvalitetsleverans! Kul att höra dem precis här i skarven mellan åttiotal och nittiotal, jävla bra. Kanske är jag syntare ändå.
Damn, I forgot how great this album is.
wow, fantastic sound
Awesome just awesome 5/5.
Very good.
Consistently great album, love Depeche Mode. Loved all of the tracks on these. Stand outs: World In My Eyes, Sweetest Perfection, Personal Jesus, Halo, Enjoy the Silence, Clean
Already listened, masterpiece in synthpop. 5/5
Essential New Wave listen, a track-for-track opus from the band
It might be very disrespectful, even though Depeche Mode is a great and legendary band, but they are in my opinion a one-album band. They have a long and eventful discography, but never before or after they hit it so right as in "Violator". It is extremly reductionistic on my part, but as an average fan of the genres - which in this case range from electronic rock/pop, to even resemblances of gothic rock, only this album sticks out and I'm happy to revisit anytime. The main part of every Depeche Mode's song, or album is Dave Gahan's vocal. His deep voice and certain way he is singing, almost talking, through a song is a big highlight and the most recognizable feature of the band. His persona creates a terrific atmosphere on the album, easily turning every riff or melody into a bit darker and ambient versions of themselves. In term of instrumental side, the riffs are very simple, but catchy, which very often is the case. Seven or eight notes, rather slower tempo, electronic background and that's it, we have a recipe for success, like the best (or second best) single from "Violator" - "Personal Jesus". Even though two most known songs really pushed their way to the top of pop-culture at some point, the rest of the album isn't that far behind. "Sweetest Perfection", "Waiting for the Night" and "World In My Eyes" are really good songs, staying in the general atmospheric surrounding of the album. A session with Violator is a really well spent time and it's important to know it, because there is plenty of covers there, so the connection will be much easier.
This is not an objective review as I really like Depeche Mode
This is the definition of the 80s.
вообще я не любитель депешей но ооооочень редко могу их послушать, и они мне зайдут вот сегодня тот самый вечер, когда я получила удовольстве от их музыки и инопланетно-космических мотивов)
Awesome album
10/10 glad i’ve been getting more new-wave recently I can never get enough of this genre
Un grande
Brilliant, really enjoyed it. Contains some classics such as Personal Jesus
Depeche Mode are one of the first bands I ever truly loved so I’ll always tell them. Personally I think Black Celebration edges this out (and it’s CRIMINALLY not on this list) but Violator is a close runner-up.
Classic
Fenomenal!
Absolutely incredible album. Just perfect.
Himnes immortals com 'Personal Jesus', 'Enjoy the Silence', 'World in My Eyes' o 'Policy of Truth'. I els que no ho són, continuen sent peces d'orfebreria igual de fina
Vibes.
Not the best Depechemode album but still solid af
Overall an amazing album.
Such beautiful and dark album. I wrongly considered Depeche Mode a fluffy pop band before this and had my eyes/ears opened hearing Personal Jesus when it first came out. Nothing prepared me for Enjoy the Silence, how could it be so slow and so intense at the same time. Happy memories of this album as well. Of getting convinced to go to a Goth club by a workmate and after being scared of entering a room full of living vampires I had the delight of watching those mad kids pounce around so joyously to tracks from this album.
Excellent Depeche Mode.
Masterful journey. Ranks up with dark side - maybe just below.
already loved
Ilu depeche mode
Шедевр, пиздец!!
Show!!!!
killerrr. personal jesus a personal best yes
A fave from my teen years. Their best work.
Another I'd have given 4.5 stars, but happy to round up. Musically strong, brilliantly produced, well presented album. Lyrics seem more a mood thing, but it was a ride I'd take again.
Super bloody awesomezorz
Killer album! Love the sounds Depeche uses.
Just perfect
5 and beyond. I'm pretty much over Personal Jesus but there are so many hits on this one. Super super good.
Awesome!

Потрясающий альбом. Классика.
Great sound great memories!
классический альбом, который до этого я слушал, но не мог расслышать переход с blue dress на clean - находка музыка бам синты во
beep boop before beep boops were cool
This is definitely my sort of jam! Some excellent earworm tracks on here and peak Depeche Mode.
If you listen to just the 9 track original this album is really really excellent. Great songs, slick production. The 2006 remaster adds a bunch of filler for no good reason...maybe to add "value"
Great album! From World in my Eyes to Clean. Great track after great track
funny cause i listened to this recently after i read that it was an inspiration for pet shop boys' 'behaviour' which was also on the list and i kinda liked. i listened to violator twice and i'm liking it even more on this third listen. the hits are amazing but sweetest perfection is the best song here. honestly there are maybe 2 meh songs but im giving it a 5 cause of the replay value, i like it more with every listen.
Funky beats. Enjoy the silence.
5/5
Classic
viajesotote
One of the best electronic pop albums ever made, it has a very clean sound and ambiance. It will definitely make you feel things.
U la la chulada
Fantastic
Recognized 2 songs!
I liked this more than music for the masses. Expanding their instrumentation made it a little more accessible
Already have listened to this one quite a lot, but always a great listen.
REACH OUT AND TOUCH FAITH
4.5
Heavy, dark electronic music with a rock edge. This one is a lot better than one of their other albums I've recently listened to from the 80s. The second half of the album is my favorite (though the first half is strong as well), with the songs "Policy of Truth" and "Blue Dress" being standouts to me.
Personal Jesus Sweetest Perfection Policy of Truth Dangerous Kaleid Sea of Sin Overall good sounding album. Songs start fairly similar but progress as the track goes on.
Great album. Great voice and vibe.
On a different day, this album may have gotten a 5. Really great album. Sweetest Perfection is a banger I'd never heard before I'd listened to this album. So well produced as well. Will definitely listen to more Depeche Mode.
Great album, some hits, some good songs, some experimental stuff. Comes together alright, but not quite 5 stars.
Lots of fun songs that hit on first listen

Synth-pop, electropop, alternative rock, dance, gothic rock.
I know one of the most popular songs, it’s really one of the great songs, the others are less my interest.
I really enjoyed this. I loved the flow of the songs, the monotone voice of the lead singer juxtaposing with the lively electronic instrumentals works so well. Genuinely solid album.
excellent!
love the electronic instrumentals and the touch of rock. its giving late night drives while yearning

This is a really fun album. They have their own sound and vibe, which I enjoyed.
So good ugh music is life
Insane gay sex listening to this album
As an appreciator of the general synth pop sound, I always appreciated how Depeche Mode took it to a darker, more alternative direction after Vince Clark left. Violator is probably the culmination of that, considering how much more guitar becomes prominent from Songs of Faith and Devotion onwards. As well as two absolutely phenomenal singles - "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy The Silence," the album tracks such as "Waiting For The Night" are still good enough to be singles for any other synth-tinged alternative dance groups.
You can hear the influence of earlier electronic bands, like Kraftwerk, and earlier new wave bands, like Tears for Fears, but Depeche Mode clearly had their own thing going for them. “Enjoy the Silence” is an excellent synth-pop track and makes the whole album worth the price of admission, though there’s plenty more to enjoy throughout the record. I met a composer of jingles once, who complained that a client once asked for a jingle in the style of Depeche Mode—a band he HATED. He played the track for us, and it sucked. You could hear the disdain in the notes he played. It’s a shame he couldn’t hear what was great about them beyond the bloops and bleeps he so reviled.
This album is like 90% beeping and drum machines and still slaps
4 stars for Personal Jesus - the album overall is not my thing, but a jam.
Alright, some classic tunes
Great album from the Essex boys
Love Depeche Mode. Actually was my first in person concert long ago. They hold a special place in my heart.
I was so dismissive of that "new wave synthesizer stuff" back in the day. My loss then but at least I can enjoy it now! "Enjoy The Silence" is so so good.
Fun to hear them
