Reviews (page 9 of 14)

it was good. "Despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage". That's the line that's most fun to sing.

Cool, versatile alt rock. Some of it's a little heavier than my taste, but good nonetheless.

Obviously a great album

Never really listened to smashing pumpkins, not sure why as definitely style of music I like. this is a great album if not a bit too long. His voice can also come across a little whiny

Deluxe edition is 6 hours of straight angst and sadness =, with highlights of 90s bops

very pog band

cool album need more time to listen

1995. Key Songs: 1979, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight

not a bad album, was a big hit when i was a kid and i remember a good few choons off it

The generator is bombarding me with double and triple albums lately. First disc is honestly pretty fire. Some of the Pumpkins biggest hits mixed with some nice deep cuts. This is much more metal than I expected. Corgan's voice and lyrics can be grating but it's also part of the band's charm. Porcelina has no business being as good as it is for a 9 minute track and Take Me Down is a nice come down closer. 4/5. Break for a few hours. Second disc starts hot. Less hits on this side besides 1979, but it's a good mix of hard and soft. Their drummer is a beast. X.Y.U. is a sludgy highlight followed by a softer closing stretch that didn't do much for me. 3/5. I will always be a stickler for excessive album lengths so despite some high highs, this rounds out to a strong 3. I want a rap album next.

There is no reason for this to be two hours??? I’m so sorry?? Look the fact there’s a nearly 6 hour version of this is silly :(

Whole bunch of 5/5 songs here, but the album is just too long.

First impression: Surprisingly nocturne-esque in the opening and heavily contrasts itself with a sonic avalanche as you go along. Overall the album possesses a drastic range of dynamics and tone. Favourite track: Tonight Tonight One sentence: I love them, but admittedly this must be their most overrated album Will I revisit? Maybe a few songs but not the entire album

I'm not too opposed to the length on this one, they do a great job at keeping it fresh and varied in sound. Great pacing, too, as even if it's impossible to tell what they're singing, it does feel like there's a complete narrative within the whole thing. I enjoyed the ballads a lot more than I did the heavier songs though, in fact the latter started grating on me quite a bit by the end. Still a lot to like! Standouts: Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness • Here Is No Why • To Forgive • An Ode To No One • Galapogos • Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans • 1979 • We Only Come Out At Night • Lily (My One And Only) • Farewell And Goodnight

The songs are okay-ish, but repetitive and hard to listen to as a whole album. Too long of an album and the vocalist's voice is very hard to listen to for 2 hours. It's not bad, classic 90s grunge songs, but I didn't enjoy it or want to listen to it again.

its good but fuck its such a long album

Some good elements within most tracks, but the record felt rapidly too repetitive and two hours feels waaaay too long for any type of record.

If this was edited down to 10 or so songs it would be an instant 5/5, but it’s just so long.

Semi-regularly when listening to Generator albums, I'll have a couple of runs through a record so I can really make sure I'm happy with my marking. But when your (double) album is this long, that ain't happening! Each of the records that make up this album are longer than I generally want an album to be (58 minutes and 63 minutes respectively) so my patience wore very thin by the end. Which is a shame because there are a number of tracks which I genuinely love. I owned Bullet With Butterfly Wings on a cassette single and 15 year old me adored that thing. It's still a fantastic song all these years later, as are a number of the other singles from this album. Tonight Tonight and 1979 I also remember very fondly. But while I love those tracks, I never bought the record in its heyday and I genuinely can't imagine listening through it all again. I will give it credit for being pretty varied in terms of sound (to the extent that a couple of times I had to check my music app hadn't somehow skipped to another artist) and when it leans into the distorted rockier end of their spectrum, I really enjoy it. But it's just so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so unnecessarily long. 3/5 P.S. Billy Corgan is an egotistical arsehole.

I never liked the singers voice or kind of singing, but the album is musically more diverse than I gave them credit for before hearing it. I wouldn't have needed to listen to 739 songs, though, most double albums are bloated, this is no exception.

I heard this in a new way. This is a good and extensive album, by Smashing Pumpkins. I honestly have not enjoyed their sound before, but after listening to the complete album, I have a new appreciation for this band and album.

Bit soft

2 hours and only maybe a small handful of songs i liked... thats rough

The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon collie yada yada Infinite is right. I’ve just listened to this album for what seems like a week. First half much stronger than the second half in my opinion. They could’ve dropped half of this thing and had a really strong 4 or 5* album but as it is, too many average tracks pulled the score down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Enjoyed this not usually the type of music I listen to so a pleasant surprise

I've always had an attitude about this record because I think the title is dumb. But let's do this anyway! Because I have to! So the problem for me with the Smashing Pumpkins is that Billy Corgan's voice is so distinctive and the music so consistent from track to track that at some point it all dissolves into an indistinguishable Smashing Pumpkin slurry. This record isn't terrible - while the music is samey, it's at least samey grungey rock jams with a compelling bassline, and there were some proggy bits here and there. But still, there is no reason in the world for an emo Smashing Pumpkins album to be 2 discs long. 3 stars

Billy Corgan has one of the hardest listenable voice ever. The guitarist is carrying this whole entire band ON his back. The album is fine if I ignore Billy's voice and the fact that it's so long.

Too long!

interesting, not heard any lyrics so far, sounds like a movie ost got to the lyrics, eh ok vocals so far very background music to do work to, i see myself putting this on and just studying and stuff, and its 2 hrs total so yk

Would have done better with just 1 disc

It's fine I guess

I’ve been waiting to hear this album for the first time for a while, though unfortunately it’s not really for me. However, I still have a lot of respect for it and I do like the overall feeling. I found myself enjoying more of the slower songs. It’s quite experimental and varied across the whole album. This is also the second triple album I’ve listened to this week, so I’m just slightly burnt out by them.

I don't know if this is true for anyone else, but there are some artists that I think are fine, but I only really need one song by them. I'm not even talking about one hit wonders. It's usually artists that have a distinct sound but are kind of samey. Fall Out Boy is one. "Sugar You're Going Down" covers all I want from them. "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" is great, and the rest of what I've heard from the Offspring is similar but not as good, so I'm fine with just that one. If the rest of their discography vanished overnight, I wouldn't be too broken up about it. The Smashing Pumpkins are similar for me. The songs I like are really not doing too much different. If I ever have a craving for Smashing Pumpkins, I can put on "Tonight, Tonight" and have a listen, and then I'm good. Maybe "Disarm" if I want some glockenspiel. The rest of the album is fine, but I've really heard all I want with just one song.

Music is great. I could do without the vocals.

No iba mal pero queda pendiente

I had a bad attitude going into this and expected not to like it much at all. And my expectations were exceeded overall! I probably landed at a 3.5, but there were a handful of tracks that were so whiny/screechy that I found incredibly grating, so the 3.5 is getting rounded down.

Was excited for this and liked some of it, but the songs weren’t that strong and Corgan’s voice gets old quick. 2.5 rounded up.

This one didn't hit like Siamese Dream did for me, still a solid record though

why cant anyone sing bro :(

This is the album that put me off the Smashing Pumpkins. I loved the beautiful wall of guitars of Siamese Dream. I loved the psychedelic floaty vibe turning metal of Gish and Pisces Iscariot. But this just seemed bombastic and bloated. A sign of things to come then! There’s lots of bits I like but there’s also a lot of very lazy metal riffs and sappy songs. If you could cut this down by half there’s probably a classic album in it. But I dunno, it gives me the ick.

Overall a good album, with some highlights. Beyond their most popular hits here, I really liked XYU. As many have said, a little too long.

Despite all my rage I AM just a rat in a cage, but I found myself eager to skip through this one before lost songs were over. Fav song: bullet with butterfly wings

album is long but so are my sorrows

a pretty good album that is about 10 songs too long. it's a shame what happened to that billy boy, too. fav songs: zero/here is no why/farewell and goodnight

some good iconic songs at the beginning but feels very same-sy afterwards. not a bad listen

Lots of varied sounds. Clearly made well. Mostly pleasant. Listening to double albums idly in one go is excruciating when so many tracks sound the same. Maybe they don't, but tell that to the album, not to me!

never dug and still don't dig. so I feel bad for giving it a bad score because I know it's pretty good. just not for me

Still having troubles to know whether I like Smashing or not. This was okay though

Heard it a million times

Hideously long album and a little too juvenile. Still, I credit them for providing a good variety of sounds, tones, and moods. A few great songs don’t hurt either.

Tunes were good but I kind of got the point after 40 minutes

This was so close to being a 4 for me. There are so many hits on this thing, I’m wondering if there are any other SP albums that are anywhere near as relevant as this one. It’s surprisingly heavy at times with fantastic drumming. Billy’s voice gets a bit old after a bit, but it’s still very unique and complements the music overall. The tracklist is so long, as the album clocks just over 2 hours. Some songs could might have been cut. But it’s a good listen if you’ve got time to spare. 3.9/5.0

At times It's brilliant, at times it's boring. Way too long with too much filler.

Great, a double album from a pretentious singer who rips off his band mates. A few of the songs are good, though.

Five singles were great, but too many songs. I’m not a massive fan, just the odd song.

Canciones q me gustaron: -Bullet With Butterfly Wings -Tonight, Tonight -An Ode To No One -Here Is No Why -Jellybelly -Zero

expected more. also too long and not enough entertaining

Some solid songs but overall too long

tonight tonight was kinda sweet the second song was ok, not amazing. I mean they sound a little generic!

2 really good songs too long of an album

Geras fonas

Some good songs but others were a bit too metal for me!

Too long. If it was shorter it would be a 4.

A fantastic description of marriage to Len Houmous 3.4 19/28 1979

I have not listened to much of the Smashing Pumpkins but I'm excited!! Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: Instrumental, nice piano, but pretty boring. 2/5 Tonight, Tonight: OMG I KNOW THIS SONG. So long. So very very long.

Favourite song: Galapogos

Gillade "zero" och kände igen "bullets with butterfly wings".

Two hours of Smashing Pumpkins is about an hour and a half too much for me. Couldn’t make it all the way through the first disk let alone the second.

Never got into this band. They are just not really my thing. In fact (with some exceptions) grunge and this particular American alt rock from the 90s and I really do not gel at all. I am usually not one to worry about voices, but i really do not like his. All that said, I know that this is a much loved record by many and especially our friends on the other side of the Atlantic, so I am listening to this with an open mind. It took 10 songs in to find a song that really caught my attention (Cupid de Locke). "Tonight tonight" and "To forgive" were ok, and I remember "Bullet with Butterfly wings", but it never grabbed me in 1995, and it did not now. On the whole, of 28 songs, I considered 7 notable, 7 were ok, and 14 i did not like at all. Honestly, about halfway through the second CD I had had enough. This could have easily been cut down into 14 tracks as opposed to 28. Notable songs were: Tonight Tonight, To Forgive, Cupid de Locke,Galapogos, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, 1979, Beautiful. The two standout tracks were 1979 and Galapogos. I have always liked 1979 and have had the CD single since it came out, but i actually preferred Galapogos. Both these songs were the most indie songs of the album. The positive takeway from this is discovering Galapogos. 3 stars

Good. A rollercoaster. Matched the vibe of my videogame very nicely and added some umph. I don't think I'll be listening to it again though.

Listenable for background music, didn’t hate it

Enjoyed listening but was quite long my attention span is so rubbish

This isn’t bad. Much better than the other SP album I listened to. Nothing remarkable but listenable. Could do with being half the length though - it’s very long.

This is just offensively long. I'm not saying the album is bad, but it is hard not have the length count against it when I'm not a pre-existing fan of this band.

I have to say I expected more. I love 1979, but anything else just didn't really speak to me. The production is amazing, and in general it's a great rock album, I guess it just didn't really speak to me.

3.5/5 if it was shorter it would be at least a 4. Love this record has some all time SP songs, just needs to be trimmed down.

singers voice hard to get past

Lot of good songs but more dross than I remember

this album is like 14 songs too long. like if you've recorded 28 individual songs either make a separate album or put them on the Deluxe Edition. something. jesus, man decent, drags in some parts but overall is just good old fashioned hard rock 7/10 FAVOURITE SONGS: BULLET WITH BUTTERFLY WINGS, GALAPAGOS, 1979, BODIES LEAST FAVOURITE SONGS: LOVE (holy fuck dude turn down the fucking overdrive it's like a version of the song someone on youtube "bass boosted" for a dumb joke)

3.5 - definitely a solid album! Needs a bit more of a deep dive, but I enjoyed it. 28 songs is too long tho!

The first thing that strikes me about *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* by The Smashing Pumpkins is its sheer length—over two hours. During that time, there’s a pretty wild mix ranging from quiet instrumental pieces to typical Pumpkins songs. It’s a nice idea, but I still find the Pumpkins’ sound too undifferentiated—even though it has improved compared to “Siamese Dreams.” Plus, I don’t like Billy Corgan’s whiny voice. At least it’s not a step down from its predecessor.

Too many fillers on the album level for ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ But certainly some of their best tracks on here

Enjoyable album, very long but enjoyed the slower songs rather than the rocky ones. Listened to with morning coffe

The back half of this marathon reminded me more of System Of A Down than anything else. Let's just make a compromise with a mid tier rating. I mean, it's a Smashing Pumpkins album that goes on for over two hours, yet, is sprinkled with their best hits. Favorite Track: "1979".

Nothing was added that I didn't already know, but good album overall.

Well, that was interesting. This double album seems to offer something for everyone. I found myself skipping through the loud screamy ones, but the more chill melodic ones were really nice. With this many tracks, they can't all be bad and they can't all be good. So it's a 3 for me, dawg.

nice, middle of the road album. not special but enjoyable.

I really liked their first two albums but this one is a bit much. There’s lots of good songs on here but a two hour double album is a lot to ask of the listener. An extreme example of how the age of CDs ruins a reasonable listening experience. This album could possibly be made into a masterpiece though with some track editing. Although the sound of this album is a bit strange. It’s as if they were trying too hard to make it sound warm and we’re just left with a lower mid-range mess of a mix. There are some great moments here though but it might be praised more for the scale of ambition rather than a set of good songs. So let’s leave this one off the list and substitute it with their first album.

On my first listen I was annoyed by how long the album was, but on the second listen I liked how varied it was. They used the length of the album to include a variety of styles. Some of those styles I preferred to others, but that’s the nature of having a lot of variety. The lyrics can get a bit cheesy, but as a former angsty teen there was a certain nostalgia to the album, and not just because some of the songs were already known to me. I don’t think I’d listen to the full album again, maybe if I was still an angsty teenager, but it was nice to have listened and been reminded that I made it through those years. Fav song: 1979 - an honourable mention to Bullet With Butterfly Wings which I'll always sing along to when it plays. Least fav: Tales Of A Scorched Earth

This is a big fat impressively executed album. I don't care for most of it, mostly because of Billy's vocals, but, whatever. There are a few great tracks here, but Billy is best enjoyed in very small doses. This double album is too much. I was astonished to learn that they cut a lot of material to get it down to the size. I think they should have kept going.

"The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the most iconic, and influential bands of all time, shaping alternative music and culture" - is what they say about themselves on Spotify, where they get 14 million listens a month, okay that's a thing. For my part, I didn't/don't get it. They're okay as some type of rock band - maybe 'alt' enough to be cool, while also mainstream enough to sell big. (Noting that "popular with Americans" =/= good.) Some songs on this album are pretty uninteresting. But I do give it credit for range of styles and moods, I like some of the grungier bits. Interested that Robert Christgau said '1979' is a good song, on an album not worth buying :-) (Also why is the singing so often so extraordinarily nasal? Do some ppl like that? Sits poorly with "grumpy teen" theme of the lyrics.) Anyway I'll say the album is Mix of Good and Bad, 5/10.

Thought I loved this album until I sat through two hours of it

Alright

6/10 The Smashing Pumpkins are a band that should fit right into the sweet spot for me. 90s grunge adjacent alt rockers with an artsy edge and an eclectic range of influences, willing to dip into a variety of different genres within their sound. But they've just never really clicked. Could a 28 track, two hour long record hook me in? Things didn't get off to the greatest start, with the first couple of tracks feeling a little repetitive and self important. I was also not convinced by Billy Corgan's singing voice. When they're doing cleaner, more melodically focused stuff, he sounds like Eric Cartman doing an indie whisper singing pastiche, which is not the most appealing of sounds. With the heavier stuff, it does start to work though, so that was a definite relief. The album does start to get going after the first couple of tracks, and there's some really good stuff here. They blend ideas well and offer some interesting uses of rhythm and intensity to create some really engaging music. There were times during this first half of the record where I was impressed and was leaning towards a higher score, but as it progressed, it started to feel far too flabby and rambling. Sonically, it feels a little inconsistent too. There are gritty, dirty little numbers like Love that embody an effectively filthy aesthetic to stuff like Tonight, Tonight that are super clean, over written and over produced, and as a result, it doesn't feel completely coherent. I do like the ebb and flow of it, but I feel like they overwork things in places and it feels a bit too try hard, while also not managing to make those sonic transitions in a particularly smooth or nuanced way. It's a massive shame, to be honest, because I really feel like there's an excellent album in here, but it's obscured by self indulgence and an unwillingness to trim the fat. Although the fact that they subsequently released a box set with a further 28 tracks suggests that self editing is perhaps not one of the most practiced skills in Billy Corgan's toolbox. Sadly, despite the fact that I'd class myself as more of a Smashing Pumpkins fan after listening to this record, this album just started to get a bit boring after a while and there was way to much guff to weed through to pick out the gems. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness - This is a bit of a rambling opening that's quite repetitive in the rhythm and cadences of the playing. Sounds a bit like someone who's not that good at the piano who thinks that they are. With some mellotron for a bit. Tonight, Tonight - This is quite dramatic, but also quite repetitive. It's got good and varied pace, but it feels a bit heavy on the drum rolls and pomposity. It just kind of feels quite overworked for what is fundamentally quite a simple song. And Billy Corgan sounds a bit like Eric Cartman whisper singing. Jellybelly - This is more like it. Heavy, grungy, grubby and rhythmically interesting too. His voice works much better with this type of sound to my ears. It's got a fury to the delivery and the muddiness of the recording gives it an effective aesthetic. Quite a jarring production change from the previous track though. Zero - Great riff, and this continues the feeling from the last track well. The lyrics are a bit tortured, but otherwise this is a solid track. It drives, it's sonically interesting and it's pretty weighty too. The chorus is excellent, making good use of that riff. Here Is No Why - This is quite chunky and again, there's some decent rhythmic interest in the composition. There are some elements of it that I really like, but it feels a little bit ponderous in places too. I can't quite put my finger on this one really, it feels like it's almost really good, but just doesn't completely connect. Bullet With Butterfly Wings - There's a bit of subtlety to this one that's good. It's a slower burn that builds tension well and then has a frantic fury to the heavier sections. Solid performances across the board, even if there are the odd bits that get a tad repetitive. Pretty good though. To Forgive - The vibe to this is good. It's got a nice soft groove underpinning it and it has some really cool tonal changes that take it in unexpected directions now and then. It gets a tiny bit meandering, but still decent. An Ode To No One - Now this is more like it. Tonally fierce, throbbing and packed with drive. They do throw in interesting rhythmic breaks here and there that I like. The breakdown felt a little overworked, but when it comes back in, it's great. So much going on but it still feels coherent and has a lot of forward direction. Good stuff. Love - The falling to pieces tone of the saturation here is lovely. It's sonically gritty and lush. The song rumbles along brilliantly with some tasty bits of ear candy popping out from beneath the wash of dirt. It's got a great chorus too. What an interesting combination of composition and production. Really good. Cupid De Locke - I actually quite like the orchestration here and there's still a bit of muddiness that underlies the clean top end that connects it to the previous track better than I initially thought. The interwoven lines from the different instruments give this great momentum and feel, and the little sprinklings of reversed audio are gorgeous. Galapogos - A pretty little song here that has some really, really nice guitar work. It threatens to build to something a few times and pulls away before delivering, but it works effectively, with a bubbling tension that always gets whipped away at the last moment. There's some really nice subtle use of mellotron in here too. Nice. Muzzle - It's got a restrained pace to it, but the groove to this is pretty good. It ebbs and flows as it goes and the different sections feed into each other pretty well. It's another that I think is pretty good, but perhaps doesn't completely connect with me and feels a little lacking in something that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it's a tad rambly and also vocally repetitive. Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans - A nice, slow build here. It's subtle and restrained and the production is lovely. It's quite a jarring jump into the distorted guitar riff though. The crispy grit that layers when it drops back to the quieter section is lovely. The heavier sections are pretty good too, actually and I like the different elements of production they use in each of the quieter sections, giving it sonic depth and an evolving quality that allows a long song like this to feel justified and fresh to the end. Take Me Down - A weaker song to finish side one, but I guess they've got to give James Iha one. It's just a bit dull and despite the fact that Billy Corgan's voice is a bit weird, at least he has a distinctive style. Ihas' voice is just weak and he struggles to hit the higher notes. Meh. Where Boys Fear To Tread - It's a bit of an aimless start, but the riff is solid when it gets going. That being said, it feels a bit rhythmically and dynamically flat and monotonous. There's something in there, but everything feels like it lacks the urgency and intensity that the better songs display. Bodies - There's a bit more to this than the previous track, but it still feels a bit dynamically limited. At least Corgan's vocal attempts to give things a bit more intensity and the breakdown in the middle adds a bit of extra variety. I'm not entirely sold on the vocal melodies here though and he does get a bit repetitive. Thirty-Three - This is quite pretty and has some interesting sound design elements to it. It is quite repetitive, particularly on the percussion side of things, but it's got enough going on in the tonal elements to keep it from getting too bogged down. In The Arms Of Sleep - There are some really nice bits and pieces in here, but it's a bit bland from a songwriting point of view. It's pleasant enough, but it doesn't really go anywhere and despite the production efforts to give it a bit of depth, which add a bit of life to it, things do feel just a little musically thin. 1979 - Things are picking up again now. The mix is excellent and the production gives depth, while the musical foundation is really strong. That combination is a winner. There's dynamic range, some solid vocal melodies and interesting development of the musical themes. The building intensity in places is really nice too, although it feels like a higher peak would have been nice. Tales Of A Scorched Earth - Quite the tonal shift, not just musically, but from a production point of view too. This is cool, but it's very muddy and sludgy, especially after 1979. I like it and it has good intensity and tone, but it's such a sonic shift that it feels jarring. Thru The Eyes Of Ruby - Another sharp direction change. It's pretty and swells and pulses beautifully and then develops into something nice and weighty. It's another where there are some really strong bits, but I'm not sure it justifies a seven and a half minute runtime. The stripped back section at the end is really nice, but it just took too long to get there, and then the acoustic guitar bit feels more like a move into another track than part of this one. Stumbleine - Another pleasant enough song that is melodically quite pretty but doesn't particularly do much other than dance around its core theme. Its just a tad rambly and aimless, but it's not bad. X.Y.U. - This is a bit more like it again. Good riffs, driving grooves and plenty of dynamic range. It has the right level of intensity from the vocal to match up with the simmering and then pulsating sections from the rest of the band. The breakdown is cool too and builds back up nicely with the increasing pace and Fury working really well. I'm not sure this needed to be 7 minutes long, but it would have made for a great album closer. We Only Come Out At Night - This has got some interesting sounds in it, but it's quite plodding. I feel like I'm saying this a lot, but there are some great elements about it and some weaker ones. I quite like the slight weirdness of it, but it's not that musically interesting. Sonically, it's cool though. Might work ok if it wasn't more than an hour and a half into the record. Beautiful - Again, this is quite plodding. There's some nice bits of sound design, but it's less sonically interesting and it's very basic musically and doesn't have particularly satisfying flow. It's quite maudlin, but not in a very interesting way. I don't really rate the drumming here either. Feels like this is really petering out now. Lily (My One And Only) - Yep, definitely petering out. Again, this is plodding, the drumming is quite annoying (why is that repetitive hi-hat so prominent) and it feels very musically basic and quite unoriginal. It kind of feels like an early demo rather than a finalised track. By Starlight - This is a bit better. It feels more well rounded and tonally consistent. It's a shame that this has come after a couple of quite plodding tracks, because it really feels like the album is running out of steam, but this is actually really nice. It's well written, has good melodies and has a good emotional core. A really nice track. Farewell And Goodnight - A fairly generic and uninteresting ballad. It's ok, I guess, but I don't really see what it offers as the 28th track on the album apart from giving Iha another vocal and writing credit. Big old meh.

There’s an amazing album in here somewhere… but two hours of Billy Corgan is just too much

Im not listening to all of this. Stupidly long. The music isnt too bad but the infinite length detracts

I can see objectively that this is a great album but I don't know that it's for me. I need to listen to it a few more times.

yeah pretty. good. i get why its so famous. reminds me of a 2004 house party.

two hours of Billy Corgan's voice is hard to digest. while there are some good songs on the album like, "bullet with butterfly wings" and "Zero", the double album is just waaaaaay toooooo looooong. this is one of those where if they narrowed it down to one album, you would have a winner. full disclosure, i do own this album and probably the last time i listened to it was probably 1995. True Story: when i was at Kutztown, i was working at The Morning Call in the mail room. usually from 10:30 pm to about 5:00 am, or whenever the papers finished printing. So i would then go home, shower, eat breakfast, park at the store, grab a quick mug of coffee out of my snap-on mug, and go to classes. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, i usually had a break from about 10ish to about 2. i would make my way up to the NAPA store, have lunch with Mike and Bruce, hang for a while, and about 1pm, go to the library, make my way up to the second floor, into the Russian section (which was huge, i believe one of the largest collections in the country). no one would ever go in there (it was a separate room). i would go in there, and take a nap with headphones on, listening to this album (first record) until i had to go to class.

Some really good tunes but a little too harsh for me at times

In theory I like The Smashing Pumpkins. In practice they're very hit and miss. Something about Corgan rubs me the wrong way. I'm not usually overly picky about vocals but sometimes I wish he would just shut up and let me listen to the music. I've had this album in my mp3 collection for 20+ years (thanks Jenny) and this is the first time I'm listening to it in its entirety (sorry Jenny). It's fine. The hard rock bangers are good. The drummer is sick with it. The ballads are completely forgettable. The stuff in-between is somewhat in-between. The lyrics kinda' suck. This won't be getting any full replays after today.

Multiple Smashing Pumpkins albums means there are too many Smashing Pumpkins albums on the list. Frankly, one is too many. Maybe I like this album? Billy Corgan's whiny voice still irritates the hell out of me. There they are! Back to being a band I hate. Zero is terrible. Bullet With Butterfly Wings is one of the most overrated songs ever. His voice is inescapable. I bet Creed loves these guys. The less "rock" songs are generally better. I think I just don't like 90s rock. And maybe that's a hangover from living through it and being more into hip hop then. This album is better than Siamese Dream and not as bad as I thought going into it.

wildly angsty and SO of its era.

I think that they were overly ambitious and just missed the Mark completely

Scweam

Favorite songs To Forgive By Starlight Really like the lyrics in By Starlight the melody it’s catchy and simple OBSESSED with To Forgive for sure a favorite smashing pumpkins songs. I love the guitar part Not many other songs stood out to me on a first listen but definitely could get into a couple more on a few more relistens but his voice just so damn silly

- once again, the gerard way of it all - cool instrumental title track - tbh i think it drags a little but the good tracks are really good - favorites: cupid de locke, mellon collie and the infinite sadness, 1979, - rating: 3/5

thank u smashing pumpkins for giving me my favorite pre-split panic! cover 😂 anyways i'm ngl a 2 hour long album is a bit egregious and i was checked out by the end of disc one notable: tonight tonight, zero, thirty-three 3.5/5

I quite like this album. I had not yet listened to it due to its runtime but it remains a good listen. I think that it has better highs than Siamese Dream but it is too long for its purposes. 8/10 [KEEP]

Pretty alright. Not sure if I loved how long it was

I have a soft spot for bands with strings and singers with grating acquired taste vocals and a kind of operatic vision they probably aren't talented enough to meet but they're doing it anyway? (to an extent. like when you reach the point where you get My Chemical Romance or Panic! At the Disco then something has gone very wrong and I am off the train) the biggest problem with Mellon Collie, aside from the title and wrestling with the weight of how much you dislike Billy Corgan vs the understanding Smashing Pumpkins is Smashing Pumpkins in large part because Billy Corgan is involved, is that it's a double album. More isn't always better, especially when you're judging something as an album rather than just a disparate collection of music, and the score for this would be meaningfully higher if it were trimmed down to the good parts. Unfortunately I like this album quite a bit. unfortunately it is a million hours long and needed to be cut down considerably. either a high three or a low four depending on my mood when I press the rate button

Raro pero está bueno

Homer Simpson, smiling politely

An album that caused quite a stir in its time, I imagine, has a couple of standout tracks, but I think overall it's a bit flat. Lots of guitar distortion, and the drums sometimes seem overpowering for each track. Even so, it's not bad for an iconic 90s album. Maybe it's not entirely my cup of tea.

A very interesting album, as of halfway through. Half the songs seem ballad-y, with piano and orchestral elements, and the other half are very guitar focused. The distortion on a lot of the songs i’d very interesting and crunchy, and production is pretty unique too! Nothing to say that hasn't already been said about Billy Corgan’s voice, but I’m surprisingly impressed with the drummer. Great album, love the concept, but a little long for my taste.

I think i prefer latent Smashing Pumpkins in more bite- sized pieces

The album was good, with great vocals, and I enjoyed the guitar. Some lyrics felt a little too experimental for me, but I understand why other people like it.

Whiplash from the sudden change in mood, cathartic. Favourite tracks: Cupide de Locke and Bullet With Butterfly Wings

I was in high school when this came out and it just wasn't on my radar. I mean, the singles were...you couldn't escape them. I never bought the album though. It's really good...even great in parts. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me. Double albums are always tricky...if you like the artist, chances are you'll love more of their work. If you're not a fan or indifferent to them, well, a double album can feel a bit bloated, self indulgent...and this trends towards that. I like the Smashing Pumpkins a little bit, but this was just a bit much for me. It's not bad, but having now listened to it all the way through 30 years later I don't think I missed a whole lot.

First time listening to The Smashing Pumpkins. Knew them only from name. Trying to expand my music taste :) Forma de cantar bastante inusual para lo que escucho generalmente, nuevo pero divertido.

2 damn hours

Halfway through Disc 1 and I'm already tired of Corgan's voice. I like the bands moody, heavy rock style but they might be better in small doses.

Fine, I guess. 2 hours runtime was a bit unnecessary. The sound was a bit all over the place, sometimes in a good way while other times just felt out of place. As with any 2 hour album there was a bit of filler in here.

Excited to give this a relisten. When it came out I was somewhat receptive, but still thought Gish was the greatest album the gods had ever delivered to us, and that the newer stuff was getting a little too radio friendly. On "relisten", I realize I don't think I've ever heard the whole album lol. I like a lot of songs and it feels like you could curate a 4 star single album from the tracks, but at this length is an "almost 4" for me.

Some good stuff on this double album - not just the hit singles but a number of deeper cuts

The album when I realized I was no longer a teenager/the target market for a kind of rock music. Up until this point I was a gigantic Pumpkins fan. I had all the cd singles before Pisces came around, watched the Vieuphoria VHS tape almost daily, based some of my first song riffs around Corgan progressions, yet I was also a huge Pavement and Fugazi guy. Ultimately Fugazi won out simply because Ian and co weren’t assholes. But as much as I had grown suspicious of both Corgan and Malkmus by 1995, I still trusted their musical aptitude. And would continue to do so, as I continued on with Adore, BtC, etc. But I had peaked and there was simply no chance of regaining my youthful passion and obsession with the Pumpkins, I just didn’t know it until Mellon Collie came out. I still stand by some of the b-sides from 1979 and Zero, and there are a few songs scattered throughout MCAIS that scratch the itch, but the production, Corgan’s changing voice, and unfortunately, the broader palette - which I respect, go to it y’all! - all felt and still feels ill-fitting. Yet it was a huge success for folks just a little younger than me, a pattern I saw repeat with Daft Punk’s Discovery. This might define their 16 year-old sense of music just as much as Siamese did for me.

Had its great moments. Had other moments that were kind of “eh”. Billy Corgan’s vocals are always tough to stomach, even at his best. Solid album with some great highlights overall.

Good but way too long, could only get through half

Really love the singles. Wasn't crazy about the rest honestly. X.Y.U. stood out. A lot more grungy than their other songs. 3/5

The last great Pumpkins album. I recall this being controversial at the time for its size. With double albums being reserved mostly for live recordings, Corgan's hubris had the lable sweating. It turns out he was able to churn out an incredibly solid effort. There is little to no filler on this one. The songwriting is cohesive and the self indulgence (so much self indulgence) often serves both the song and the ego. The scales tip to pure ego on the next few records. Side note, SP are in my top five worst concert experiences. See above notes regarding ego.

Favorite tracks: Tonight, Galapogos, Muzzle, Thirty-Three, In the Arms Of Sleep, Beautiful og selvfølgelig 1979.

3 A few great psychedelic tunes. You can hear the blues coming through.

It was good but not good enough to be over 2 hours

lead vocals are as bright and garish as a carbon arc lamp. when he shuts his mouth, there's some fun and interesting guitar work. the heavier songs are compelling despite the vocals, the lighter fare just falls flat.

Some of my favorite 90’s songs but overall not the greatest album. Some instrumental was so brash it hurt to listen to.

Let's first address the elephant in the room: yes, the album is too long. 2 hours of, at best, okay songs would be gard for anyone to sit through. Surprisingly I only felt the length towards the end, when the songs become more repetitive and boring. The singer's voice doesn't lend itself well to a whisper but a scream comes out just fine. All in all, it is up its own ass a bit too much but it's not the worst thing on here either. Best songs are Bullet With Butterfly Wings and We Only Come Out At Night. 5/10, mediocre.

I’m of the opinion that it is vanishingly rare for a double album to have enough good songs to justify stretching to a second disc. This is no exception. The highs here are absolutely great, but imagine if all the chaff was left for b-sides and there was one really solid album here instead.

Repeat listen

Billy Corgan singing like his nose got pinched for two hours (word is, Billy still has his nose pinched to this day).

Too much of a good thing

First things first, I really had no choice than to play this as background music while gaming, due to its lengthy runtime. I don't have the patience to sit and thoroughly listen to its entirety. If it was possibly condensed to fewer tracks, I'd have more thoughts to share. Nothing really piqued my interest except the band's guitars and drums. I've heard "1979" before. An okay track that gives off a nostalgic feel. One thing I can conclude is that I'm not much of a fan of Billy Corgan's vocals. Very whiny and weird. Anyways, I don't have a deep opinion on this album, don't hate it or like it.

Good but too loomg

I liked Cherub Rock and this album has elements of it but no one song stood out and whoa double album distress as too long and lost concentration.

Spooky

This one is tricky to rate. The album sounded awsome and it had loads of good songs in it. Corgans singing is an oddball. On some songs it fits perfectly and on some it is really hard to listen to. Also I get they wanted to make a huge album but... 2+ hours? For me this was too much especially as some of the songs felt a little like fillers. As it is the album is still a good album with awsome songs so solid 3/5. I have to try and give this another chance at some point (when I can spare 2 hours to go through the album) and see if the album climbs up to 4/5. Hard to pick best song as there were few candudates but I am going to say Jellybelly.

really like some of the songs on here. A bit long, and doesn't hold as much nostalgia for me. Some of the tunes are top tier!

Too fucking long.

I was big into Gish, Siamese Dream, and Pisces Iscariot, but I had moved on by the time this one came out. I was wondering whether I might find a new appreciation, but this was really a lot of listening to confirm that 1979 is still an all time great tune. Sure, there's a some other fine songs, fun guitar tones, strong playing, but like most double albums, what this needed was to be an LP.

side b surprisingly good. good finale. long run time grungey

Album is okay. Could have done with half the songs. Only gave it a three for the album art. Otherwise I would rate the album a two.

The great wall of sound. A for effort, love the artwork and the structure of the album. Vauge concept and focus on quantity over quality, along with the extended runtime, drags it down a quite a bit.

The hits are the hits. No diamonds in the rough on this one. Bullet with Butterfly wings rips and 1979 is beautiful. Zero is pretty good. Nothing else really sticks out. I saw these guys in 2022 and Jane’s opened for them. Jane’s was way better.

Has a bunch of bangers, but not sure i’d listen start to finish again

I didn't realize how long this album was. This could've been two.

Has some good songs, but waaaaaay to long for what it brings.

I forgot how long this album was. It would have been better served as 1 disc as opposed to 2. Some great songs but bloated and overdone much like Billy Corrgan.

Despite all my rage I'm still not that into the Smashing Pumpkins

Has some good songs, but I could have done with half of it

I loved Siamese Dream when I was growing up. But I never got into this album when it came out. I like it but it's long. Feels like it could have been heavily edited to make an amazing album.

haven't been the same since I learned "despite all my rage" meme comes from here. it's also the most memorable thing about this whole 2 hour album honestly

It’s got bangers and it’s so long.

Some good songs, but I don't like the harsher aspects of the album. A good variety of sound, but not something I'd seek out for myself.

very many songs but a few gems in there

An all over the place album, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. I really liked To Forgive. It also brought a little calm between all the other more intense songs, which was needed. I found Cupid de Locke a very pleasant song to listen to. The harp gives the song a dreamy quality. Galapagos is also a great song, and I even added the last song on the album to my own playlist. Some of the other songs were just a little too chaotic for me to fully enjoy. The album is very long, though. Twenty-eight songs that together last more than two hours is a bit excessive. I would have removed a few songs to make it a shorter album, and I can immediately point out which ones those would be. Because of its length, I won't be returning to this album anytime soon.

way too long and i didn’t like the heavier songs

this slightly overcame my irrational hate of the smashing pumpkins

The album was too long. A few great songs, but a lot of rage music. The instrumental music is surprisingly good

Strong Classic Rock energy despite being a 1995 creation. Would be great for working out. The energy ebbed and flowed, giving the listener a break from the intensity with a slow guitar ballad with a much more pensive affect.

Have never really listened to this album before - and really only know the singles :Tonight, Tonight, 1979 and Bullet with Butterfly Wings which are all great songs (although not quite as good as Today). At 2 hours the rest of the album feels bloated and quite varied in tone. Unfortunately do not have the time the album probably needs for me to give it enough listens to fully appreciate it. After my first run through I think that Siamese Dreams is the much stronger album.

Honestly a bit disappointed. It was epic, but not in a good way. Was expecting more of a musical story or musical journey, but it was just a lot of songs put together in one giant album. The big hits are good - 1979, Tonight, Tonight, but then a lot of meh. Was not into The Smashing Pumpkins at the time, but have broadened my musical tastes to like a decent amount of their stuff. Was hoping for something good from this album, but will stick with just listening to their handful of big hits and nothing deeper.

1/30/26 - Listened throughout the workday. Album is too long, wasn't able to make it through the entire thing in one sitting. If this was cut down to one album, it would have been even more highly regarded. Best Song - Muzzle

Was quite impressed by this since it was a long one but it kept me engaged. Not so much a fan of the more grungy songs on here but there was a good mix.

Decent, worth a listen every so often

X.Y.U gives grungy QOTSA vibes, and great rhythm on a handful of tracks from disc 1. The remaining are forgettable, and even the singles don't deserve the acclaim they receive. Would listen again only if forced.

I wish I had had more time to dig in and appreciate this 2hr album. Overall I do enjoy The Smashing Pumpkins, recognized several of the songs, and enjoyed the listen.

Started the week on a double album, and ended it on a double album. I’ve never been a massive smashing pumpkins fan, although 1979 has increasingly been on my rotation recently. There’s some hidden gems in here too, namely Thru The Eyes of Ruby. But again, and as with almost all double albums, there’s a bit too much that’s forgettable

A 26-track album is too much… At least now I know where “The world is a vampire” song came from.

THE Smashing Pumpkins album, but too long. Listened to 2012 remastered with good sound. 93 songs almost 6 hours long. If I didn’t feel Mellon Collie before I did after. 2 songs made playlist, because love is a vampire.

185/1089 love a nice instrumental opening. Tonight, Tonight was decent The lyrics to Zero feel VERY poser/tryhard to me and i’d actually prefer the songs with no vocals at all bc the guitar etc is good but the voice is… tiring okay so this was a decent album. i think there’s a solid 4 star project in here that’s been brought down by the length and “bloat” for want of another word. I think bringing it down to a 14 track single album but cutting some songs and removing vocals from some others would leave an album that could be pretty impactful to me. faves: 1979, Mellon Collie, To Forgive, Cupid De Locke, Galapagos, Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans, Stumbleine 63/100

Very good tho very long and quite eclectic enjoyed some lots but some not at all

This was my first full listen to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. I only really knew the singles before this. Overall I enjoyed the album a lot, but damn, over two hours of Billy Corgan's voice was a bit overwhelming. If someone trimmed it down to a tighter single-disc version, I'd easily give it more than 3 stars.

Really uninteresting. It was good but no way I'm sitting through it for another hour and a half

Paljon hyviä biisejä ja muutama huonokin. Minusta liian pitkä, ei jaksa keskittyneesti kuunnella kokonaan.

The title is VERY fitting for this album. Billy Corgan probably gave himself a bundle of stomach ulcers during the making of this album (if he didn't already have them). There's some serious angst and consternation happening here. If you're pissed at the world or want to break some shit, throw Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and you'll be good to go. 1979 is a great song of course, but I think Siamese Dream is more my speed.

"Can you ever have too much of a good thing" asks Billy Corgan. Mellon Collie answers definitively that you can. Some really great riffs and here & the playing is excellent. The ambition overwhelms the album but there are choice cuts throughout. The genre switch-ups are almost universally good too. Paring it down at all would cut against the vision so that's not an option or recommendation. My issue is that I don't particularly like Corgan's whiny ass lyrics. It is what all the parodies of grunge are doing. Emotionally NIN, Nirvana and others reach the emotional highs and lows of this album in half the time. Consider me a Smashing Pumpkins doubter, still. Favorite Tracks: Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Cupid de Locke, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, We Only Come Out at Night, Lily

Every review I've seen says that this album is a perfect two hour experience. But I don't feel it, some songs feel like filler. Teenage me would've loved this. But now nothing is hitting me. Great layering and nice rock, just didn't hit personally.

No denying the hits, but unless you are a fan of the style, the rest of the tracks are just filler. This would have been better as a single album

I am surprised I didn’t enjoy this one more. I love the well known tracks (especially the power) but I had a hard time getting through two full hours of Corgan’s singing.

What this experience is almost teaching me is that double albums are almost universally shit . Everyone so far is bloated and should be a single album Great 90s indie but 2 hours come on - by song 2 I was on Thanos’ side. A long album of long songs . Some trimming called for . It’s is good, really good even , but too long to be great 3.5 again . Now do I round up or down ? Disc 2 drops the average down to a 3. Would be generous with this if it wasn't two hours long.

Very long, but otherwise pretty good.

Turns out I've never owned or even listened to this all the way through. I didn't get through the whole thing because Jesus Christ Two Hours. I'm going to break my rule of not reviewing until after a full listen. I was pleasantly surprised by many tracks, despite having the angst shoved down my throat constantly. It's got teeth, though when it slows down it gets tiresome pretty quickly. I really tuned these guys out after Pisces Iscariot...that album just never clicked with me. Sorry I missed this back in the day. If it was one hour, I probably would have been more inclined to actually finish listen to it and give it that extra star.

I love a couple of songs, like a couple of others and then the rest get skipped because I’m tapping out on Corgans voice

I'm sorry I can't take this seriously knowing that Billy would, just a few short months later, fuck a shape shifter

It’s a good album, great even at times, but it’s just too damn long.

Repetitive at end

Really good album but it isn’t much my vibe but the songs are truly amazing I liked the song “zero”

Point lost for being 2 hours.

Quite ok but a few misses

I remember trying really hard to get into this as a teenager and I just couldn’t but I actually enjoyed this listen. Too long though, 2 hours was a bit too much to properly get into it. 3.5 stars.

Just can't do this-grunge was never my thing. A little to in my face to really enjoy.

I don’t think this is giving enough to warrant it being 2 hours. Cool cover.

Liked some but got really repetitive Didn’t finish whole thing

A few good standouts but I found the amount of songs to be overwhelming for my first album on here.

Memorable songs

eh, a bit melancholy for me.. didnt mean the pun, just the best word to describe

So annoying. Lots of really good stuff on here, especially the softer stuff; Galapgos, we only come out at night, Lily, By Starlight and so on. However this was horribly juxtaposed with a lot of boring or harsh noise shit that did nothing for me. Also throw in the fact that this album is 2 FUCKING HOURS LONG. 2.5, but I'm feeling generous so I'll round up

Has the bones of a great album but desperately needed a producer to come in and trim the fat

I have the same review about this album as Bren had about The Sound of Music- it was... long.

Needlessly long. Often tedious. Great title and first half. Dragging at the end

It was alright liked the first disc yet to listen to the seoncd

i’ve never really cared for the smashing pumpkins. favorite song: 1979, it’s the most popular for a reason.

12/18/25: I might be getting soft and/or old. Is this what people mean when they say rock just sounds like noise? They are versatile but I can't see myself listening again. 4/10 but the rat in a cage song alone bumps it to 5/10.

Initial thoughts- I know some of the tracks and like them a lot so I'm excited to hopefully find new songs I enjoy. Good instrumental to start off the album. Tracks 2-3- The transition from moods was surprising but not unpleasant. I like the crazy guitar parts and the lyrics in Jellybelly. Track 5: It sounds nostalgic and is pretty edgy but still has a good beat and lyricism. Track 10: One of my favorite smashing pumpkins songs it's so calm and romantic and I love the background music. Feels like running in a poppy field as the sun sets. Track 11: Hit harder than I thought. The cymbal in the background was a nice touch. Beautiful music breaks. Final thoughts- I lowkey did not finish this whole album, I started late at night and fell asleep but It was a good listen. I like listening to alternative rock but generally don't have it in my playlists so it was fun to really get into the guitar solos and rasp of his voice.

The double-CD was given to me as the first Christmas gift from my then boyfriend which I was very thankful. We had only been dating a few months. We later got married, had two kids, then divorced. I still have the CD. Listening to it now, I realized a few things. I hadn't listened to it very much after receiving it as a gift. I think it was mostly due to the polarizing arrangement of the songs. I like the mellow, quiet songs the best. The loud, gangling rock ones are too much. I think I would like this double CD better if I could edit or rearrange the songs. All that to say, this is a good album and I should return to it more often. I think spending more time with it will help me understand the ping-pong of music styles better.

Very good guitar sounds, but something is lacking for me.

An interesting listening experience. Did save a couple of songs but nothing caught my attention. I wander if maybe the problem is that I’m listening while studying. I can appreciate the album, not sure if I’ll listen again a lot.

A 3.5 for me - any other day it probably would have been higher but I was feeling delicate

One of the more consistently good double albums ever made.

will probably come back to this album at some point when i have more time and maybe my rating will change but i didn’t really feel grabbed enough by it to enjoy such a long project. it definitely had parts i really enjoyed but i felt like the length just made me zone out a lot

Good listening!

I'd like it better if it were only one album, but still a great album. I love the way they can blend the orchestral music with rock.

Too long. Many skips. Absolute bangers.

It's a monumentally ambitous album, but overstuffed with content and not always my flavor. The singles are classics, and it definitely deserves a listen at least once in your life.

This one is tough to rate. It has incredible songs, but it's overstuffed, including with scream rock. Keep 1979, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Tonight, and Zero, and round it out with the best remaining tracks to fill one CD, and it gets 4 or 5 stars. But I find it hard it get to higher than 3 with all that scream rock.

I loved their first 2 albums Gish and Siamese Dreams, this one is a bit to ambitious for me. It has some great songs and they show some range with different genres throughout this album. The album is just too long, and his vocal style gets a bit tiring. Their are some hits on this album and a few duds as well, when they try to go metal his voice his really straining. This is not an album I would go back to and listen to the whole thing, only a few songs that I would seek out to listen to again.

Some good songs in there, but come on, 2hrs. Ain't nobody got time for that

Genre spanning, but did not need 2 hours of this

omot me jako napaljuje no sam album i ne baš. mislim, nije loše, al nije baš kvalitetno dosljedno, osim kvalitetnih ima i značajnijih stilskih skokova, svakako zanimljivo. iznenadila me žestina pojedinih pjesama (manje mi dragih). glazbeno mi je čak dosljedno dosta dobro, al vokal ne silazi sa skale kojom ustrajno skakuće: pristojan - blago nepodnošljiv - naprosto nesnosan. tekstovi bi isto mogli biti bolji... sve u svemu, ajde trojka, premda je dugo, nije mi uopće bilo naporno i ostavilo mi je bolji dojam od njihova prvijenca

Was quite negative going into this when I saw the runtime of the album. And it was off to a really, really bad start, with the three first songs being all over the place, feeling like they belonged to completely different genres and albums. But in the end it turned out better than expected. There were some low points in the more hardcore ones, like 'Bodies', for example. But there were some real recognizable and good songs in '1979', and 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' as well. And most songs in between were either tolereable or decent as well. One thing that icks me a bit about the record is that it changes character quite a lot - a bit too much for my taste. Many songs feel like they may even belong to different genres. And I am certainly no fan of super long albums. They're never as tight as shorter, more thought out ones, which means you just have to sit though a lot of mediocre tunes. In the end it wasn't that bad though. I much prefer this to '69 Love Songs' or whatever that slog album was called. Weak 3.

I haven’t listened yet but I will

2 hours?!? I like Bullet with Butterfly wings but we're about to find out whether this has earned such a run time Listening notes: -Nasal voice is fine for what Smashing pumpkins are after -Metal integration into other genres is always hit or miss for me but I think it's working here -Bullet with Butterfly Wings: Banger. 'nuff said. -This album is so long. So self-indulgent. Edit these tracks down! Review: All good music. A few awesome tracks. But not enough to justify an album half this long. 28 tracks is too many and half of them are twice as long as they should be. Overstays its welcome. Especially irritating because there's some good stuff here, but I'll never list to the album again probably. I'll round up to three because the highs are quite high. (Disclaimer. I normally give albums two listens for a rating, but that just won't work here)

This is pretty good stuff. I feel like it's the kind of thing that could have ended up being quite important to me if i'd listened to it at 13. However, I'm not sure it justifies a double album.

A few brilliant songs there, but as an album it doesn't quite flow

Good album with some all-time bangers (Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979). Broad, ambitious. Does actually feel like two albums, so fair play. Probably is a bit long though.

Listened Before? Y Used to have this one in the 90s. Pretty good but too long and overrated in my opinion. There are some scorchers on Disc 1, and it kinda putters out in places but overall decent. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Thirty-Three

Way too long. Some great songs, but a lot of meh as well.

Another legendary band that turned out to be disappointing just like Iron Maiden AND Judas Priest. Of all the songs, I quite enjoyed 1979 but I've known that song for ages. Everything else kind of grated my ears. Couldn't make it to disc 2. Yea, there are TWO discs.

Billy Corgan wanted to make The Wall for GenX? Unfuckingbelievable, the stones on this guy. First of all, The Wall was The Wall for GenX. Secondly, this album isn't any better than all the other albums in the mainstream that year. In fact, pretty sure The Bends came out that year. Get over yourself, bro. Ok, now that's out of the way... This is actually a decent album, but it definitely should have been two. I don't see why making it a double was necessary when there is no unifying theme or narrative. Two hours is a long time to listen to unrelated songs.

I can't give this album more than a 3. Yes, it has some very good songs on it, and I'm not only talking about the hits. The problem is partly that it is way too long, but also that it becomes a bit samey for me and the last few songs are so tired.

Some interesting mix of genres. I like the ambition but won’t listen again

Some of these songs rip. But some are kind of boring piano? Also seems super long. And his voice is annoying.

There are some great tracks but this album is just too long. There's a good mix of high energy songs and slower songs at least. Apart from the tracks I already knew (1979, Tonight Tonight, Bullet With Butterfly Wings), Zero and Jellybelly were the highlights. Maybe on another day this might have been a 4 but I was ready to move on after the first disc and my mood was a lot worse by the end of the second hour.

The singles bring me back to the days we listened to the radio

I’m breeding a range of super dogs that are trained to sniff out cantaloupe rinds and this is how it gets exposed to the world. They’re not ready for prime time. Honeydew is up next, but Jesus Christ, I’m only one man. Do you know how many border collies I have fed cantaloupe to? Good, and you won’t know. I suppose after you find that breeding a range of super melon dogs, infinite depression is the result. I hate it here. Humble reviewer, smiling politely and anticipating an artistic romp through the dog tracks of the cosmos. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - YES! That weird instrument is here. All I know is that it features heavily in the weirder old jazz stuff. This be a fine intro, yarrrr. Tonight, Tonight - I know this song. Not in the biblical sense of course. I uhh don’t care for it. Sorry. I want more angst. Jellybelly - Oh my word I thought there was an accidental shuffle towards some of my harder stuff. No no, not my harder drugs, but my harder music. We settled back into Regular ol 90’s alt-rock, but I’m enjoying it. Zero - This is genuinely one of my favourite riffs ever. It is like if a wrestling theme song became artistically viable. It captures all the angst and coolness that my 14 year old self would appreciate and distills that energy into a song that can appeal to people who are capable of thinking about more than pro wrestling and their awkward pubescent stage. Here is No Why - This is going to be a long record. Not because it’s bad, but because I’m forcing myself to talk about a bunch of songs that will conceivably be like this. Good little rock tunes, with not much in the way of negativity to espouse. I yearn for the hatred. Bullet With Butterfly Wings - The world is a vampire. A cool one with the big pointy cape. Not the teen style. Old Transylvania style. Deserves every play it’s ever received. How the hell did this crack the mainstream. The 90’s were wild. To Forgive - Is human, to build a series of homemade bombs and make several anonymous threatening phone calls to government facilities, that’s divine. An Ode to No One - the loud tracks remain the best. This starts more meat and/or potatoes than some of the previous scorching tracks, but it gets weird enough. Love - Uhhh speaking of wrestling. This is probably what ECW ripped off for their theme. Then we’ve got 90’s megaphone voice in full force. This is alright. Cupid de Locke - Spacey. Not Kevin Spacey, Jesus come on. Galapagos - Hmm. This song kind of sucks. I was hoping for more tortoise based content. Muzzle - This feels very radio friendly for the time. Sometimes I use that as an insult, but I get more of a nostalgic comfort with this song rather than a corporate vibe. Porcelina Of the Vast Oceans - Porcelain based god who patrols oceans. Good topic. Mid song. Take Me Down - Different vocals?? I want my money back. This is kind of sweet, but guys? We’re an hour into this and we have more than an hour left. Ugh. Where Boys Fear to Tread - The cool riff store? I’m not mad about this record being this long if we keep up this kind of devastating (emotionally) riff style. Bodies - LET THE BODIES HIT THE floor. Oh. It’s not that song. Thirty-Three - The Jesus allegory for the evening. Or it’s not about that at all. Man this is a long album! I feel like we could’ve left this one in a notebook. In the Arms of Sleep - Me too. Being rocked gently into the sweet hereafter. Temporarily. 1979 - A classic for all the times. I’m more partial to the harder hits like “Zero” but this is a quintessential 90’s track. Also! If this song were made today it would be called “2009.” Prepare my mashed food, I’ve got one foot in the grave here. Tales of a Scorched Earth - Basically a Crowbar song title. Nice burst of energy, despite the megaphone cliché. Thru The Eyes of Ruby - Alright. Wrap it up. Time to go. Is that the time? Stumbleine - These guys like weird girl names. Keeping these in the baby name book. Stumbleine and Porcelina. The twins. X.Y.U - YEAH. I yearn for these tracks. Cut a bunch of the fat from this thing and you’ve got a hell of a record. Sludge and aggression is something that these guys really excel at. We Only Come Out at Night - C.H.U.D ANTHEM. Beautiful - GRISELDA. B-B-B-B BOOM. Oh it’s not a Westside Gunn beat. It should be. This turns into a motivational Christmas song. A true low. Lily (My One and Only) - Animal Crossing type beat. By Starlight - American Radiohead. Farewell and Goodnight - As you can tell, I have nothing left to say. If you’re still here, please help me get out of this format. I’ll never be a writer, why do I put myself through this? Got to keep the brain treading the water of short-form content and microplastics for a bit anyway. The feds are at my door. It turns out my collie breeding was not “ethical.” Whatever that means. I’m a “threat to the safety of animals.” Eat shit. You ever see a Collie that eats nothing but primo melon scraps? I have never seen a shinier coat. This thing GLOWS. As I lean my gargantuan frame against the door and await my impending arrest, I look back upon the past two years, err sorry hours of my life. No album should be this long and I’m irritated by the very notion that it was. There is so much filler here. Just put half of these tracks on a super-duper expando deluxe 23 year anniversary triple colour vinyl edition with recordings of the band members’ flatulence on Side F. One for the true freaks. Cut the extra out for normal listeners and we’ve got an excellent record. There are highs on this record that are rarely reached in modern rock music. Zero is one of the greatest mainstream songs of all time, but when you play Citizen Kane in amongst six other movies that are just Jean Claude Van Damme action flicks with audio sync issues, the whole experience loses some of its lustre. I was hoping for more Mellon collie and less infinite sadness. *OPEN UP YOU’RE SURROUNDED* it looks like I’m going to have to shoot my way out, so I leave you with this. Please do not make two hour albums. No matter how good some of your ideas may be. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Jellybelly, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Tales of a Scorched Earth, X.Y.U

It was fine, a good mix of classic and just absolute bloatness. The last quarter of the second disc felt like a marathon to go through.

Overall, I think it's just an OK album, but there are three or four really good tracks that I could happily play on a regular basis.

I live some of the smashing pumpkins songs but the lead singer’s voice gets on my nerves

I remember when this box came out, and it was one of the pivotal, must haves of the 90s, one of those albums that you had to have in your Case Logic. Tonight Tonight bangs quite hard, but I'm a sucker for big, energetic, orchestral ballads, and this more than qualifies. Hits sprinkled throughout, special shoutout to "1979" which plays on a loop in my head when I think of mid-90s Emo Rock. Vivid memories of playing GTA IV and searching for this track on Liberty Radio. Something about driving thru Liberty City with the bridge to this song going hard is a core gaming memory. Good stuff. A for sure 4 but at 2+ hours it does drag. If you're good with picking and choosing, you can create a great LP that's a solid 4. As it is, it's a 3 for me.

Ended up having to split this into two days because I didn't have time yesterday to listen to the full album! It was fine, exactly what I expected from Smashing Pumpkins. The sound's not a bad one, but 2+ hours of it did feel like a drag. Some really solid songs on here mixed with some some really unmemorable ones.

I missed out on this first time around due to my britpop focus, and the mtv overplay. I really enjoyed Siamese Dream and thought this would be different, it's not. But now it doesn't appeal in the way it would have. Still some great songs. 1979 remains a favourite. Glad I listened!

love the start but kinda evolves into something pretty heavy and kinda emo lowkey, not bad by any means but not my fav 5/10

The Pumpkins are terrific musically. The songs are complex and interesting. They rock! Then Billy Corgan opens his mouth.

Not sure if this ever needed to be two discs, but there are some bangers on here. "1979" remains one of the greatest songs of the 90s, as Billy Corgan remains one of the greatest douchebags of all-time—"God is empty... just like ME!" Sure. Also in like 2007 James Iha bought my girlfriend a drink at a bar in Chicago and before I could embarrass myself she told me he made a habit of buying everyone he recognized a drink every time he saw them. Joakim Noah was there too. Weird night.

These guys can make some good music, and I will listen to it... for maybe 30-40 minutes. But 2 hours? Come on you're taking the piss. 3.1

Alright yeah, but grungy but some solid songs there

REAL pity about his ridiculous voice throughout as the whole thing would be vastly improved by something less affected. I liked Zero a lot but cannot cope with the lyrics "intoxicated with the madness, I'm in love with my sadness" and simply have to hope that was tongue-in-cheek. I liked the sweetness of Galapogos, Thirty-Three and Beautiful.

Wow obsessed with the album art. Ah, I see on Spotify I’ve already listened to the extended remastered whatever version and liked a few songs. Let’s see. -- It's fine. I think Smashing Pumpkins are enough of a household name that I think, "Yeah! Lemme check em out!" Then I do but ultimately never revisit their work until I once again wonder why I’ve never given them a shot.

I flip-flopped on this album because I heard so many tracks off it in the 90s it felt dated. Listen to deep cut tracks felt fresh and still feel relevant. I was never a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan because I thought Billy Corgen’s the voice sounded kind of whiny. The constant radio exposure didn’t help that perception. This album actually is pretty masterfully produced with a mix of rock and ballads. Tonight, Tonight was always overplayed. But then you get songs like an Ode to No One is kicked ass. Cupid De Locke was weird cool. Where Boys and Bodies felt very garage-band. I liked it. 1979 was always a good song, and still is. Favorite surprise track, though, was Thru Eyes of Ruby. Despite my original bias, I suppose we can officially include this album in the pantheon of great ones. 18 year old me may have been wrong after all….
