Some hits but I’m just not into them.
While there are some songs on here that I find nice in their sweep of sound and simple emotions (Tonight, 1979). It does not hold up through the rest of the album, the bulk of which feels like sonic and lyrical wallpaper. Lots of trite emotions that could use some prosaic specificity to balance things out.
Will come back for a few of these. Two hours is way too long.
It’d be nearly impossible to make an album this long that didn’t feel bloated. There are great songs on here but a lot of dross, and all that heaviness and melancholy starts to suffocate. If they’d cut out 15 songs this could have been a 5. Everyone needs an editor.
Liked this more than I expected. Their hits were hits for a reason. Billy Corgan’s voice is so annoying that I like it, and I love the melodramatic tone of some of these. But docking a full star for length and some duds along the way
Disc one was pretty close to a 5 for me, loved almost all of it, such great blend of loud and soft tunes. Loved Muzzle and the singles. Disc 2 felt like much more of a drag and didn’t really hit its stride as much. Plan to return to this one though, as there seems to be more here. Listened to this one live from their hometown of Chicago!
Christ but it's long. Even the title is long. Too long. Nobody needs a 2 hour + double CD on a list like this, i don't care how many it sold. But is it any good? Mostly. The singles are fine, if a bit pretentious: grunge tending to generic rock. Well, so are the non-singles, despite Wikipedia's insistence on the variety of styles. What this really is, is an album for playing on long (in UK terms) drives.
One thing I've learned is that if you want to ruin a perfectly good album, make it a double album.
A bit too long - its OK
Only two days after my last Pumpkins album I got this epic two-hour long entry. I wasn't a fan of Siamese Dream, proclaiming Billy's voice to be whiny and their guitar sounds to be obnoxiously fuzzy. While those two facts remained true throughout the course of Mellon Collie, I did think the song quality increased by a notch, so I'm giving this a star higher than Siamese.

Like a 7.5, felt repetitive at some points even though it is a double album
First time listening - pretty good transitional album of early 90's as rock tried to figure out what to be.
To Forgive save me X U idk smth was the best song Yes, done, too long so probably wont listen again in a long time tho need to look up some lyrics
3.5. First heard 1979 while shwasted in the back seat of a convertible, which was amazing, but man, his voice is so grating
One thing this album has going for me is that it reminded me of one of my favorite song mashups of all time. Check out Neil Cicierega - Mullet with Butterfly Wings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRdSoZO-5mM Aside from that, it's fine.
I have a funny relationship with the Pumpkins - I love some songs, and there are a couple on here, but much is a low growl from which great music on occasion energes.
This is a hard rate. Certain songs are so so good. But then getting through the full 2 hours felt like a lot… so I’m going right down the middle
I like it. Would i buy it and listen on repeat? No. But it had my head bopping sometimes, and i think sometimes thats pretty important. It's two hours long, so its giving taylor swift if she turned grunge. I love the cover album i think its so cool. It's not my favorite but i can appreciate. favs: -Galapagos for sure - I have others but eh. Some songs are a skip for sure he’s just wailing into the microphone. Otherwise are quite beautiful
This album has some of the classic Smashing Pumpkins hits, but at the length, there’s just no glue holding it all together. I don’t care much for the band to begin with, but I do respect their career.
Some bangers, but too much filler
Its a lot but some bangers
Some of these songs are iconic from my youth/early adulthood. Corrigan’s voice can get a bit annoying at times, though, whiney even. There are some very well written songs on here though. But I don’t think a double album was necessary. I feel like there was one solid album, possibly three sides would’ve been good, but they just filled in with other stuff to make a full four sides. That kind of waters the whole thing down for me. Corrigan’s arrogance never sat well with me, either, so that kind of taints my enjoyment of anything Pumpkins.
Why is this album so long? It is too much. I like the softer and melodic songs on this album, and did not like the dark grungy songs. But also, I would have liked it more if it wasn't this long!!!!
A bit of a shame this - I love the Pumpkins, and I was excited to get this album. Then I saw that it was 2+hours long, which made me lose my enthusiasm for it! If this were just for disk 1, it would be an easy 4 - I love how even amongst all of the weird, against-the-grain music that was coming out of the 90s, TSP have such a distinct sound and feel. I just can't get behind the volume of music that was recorded for this release. Soz!
Great album! Double album wow! I think i listened a while ago. Could go for another listen, a lot to take in
A defining album at the time. While there are some great songs scattered throughout, as a whole the album is a way too long and has an erratic flow of emotions that feel incoherent next to each other.
Would probably make a cracking single album. Some classic Pumpkins riffs and songs surrounded by to much self indulgent bullshit
I enjoyed a lot of it, but man is this album long. I struggle with ones this long, I enjoyed many of the songs but lost the plot at times
It was ok. Was excited to hear it and did not live up to expectations
I enjoyed a lot of it, don't get me wrong, but if it had been half the length I still would have enjoyed it just as much.

And as if this generator knew that, it assigned me their most popular album on this very day. "Tonight, Tonight", "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "1979" are familiar to me, moreover "1979" is one of my favorite songs from my teenage days considering the approximate year of my birth :-) Except for "1979" I wasn't really Smashing Pumpkins fan, I've never listened to this way too long album, so let's give it a go. Basically, this double album has everything. From very good, usually lighter songs, to harder stuff with terrible vocals and almost unlistenable screaming. I didn't regret not listening to them tonight (tonight). These two hours were too much for me anyway.

I was looking forward to this album as it had been so long since I listened to some Smashing Pumpkins. The first couple of tracks were great but VERY soon I realised how irritating Billy Corgans voice is. I also realised how try-hard the lyrics are, they are like a year 9 students first attempt at poetry, just juvenile rhyming angst. lol. My other big complaint is that the album is over 2 hours in length, which is just too much whinging to listen to in a single session. I loved the little bits of nostalgia that surfaced between Billy's pretend singing moans. Reading a bit about him, he also sounds like a bit of a narcissistic dick, although I'm sure this is a requirement for famous emo dudes. I love that 7 years ago Billy Corgan anounced that he "hates everything except for David Bowie." Nice one Billy, all is forgiven :-)
Il 3 più 3 che si sia mai visto. Intanto è troppo lungo, alterna momenti spettacolari a momenti meh, alla lunga la voce scoccia, Cupid De Locke canzone meravigliosa.
I enjoyed it, although I found it a bit long and it had some fillers.
I was in college when this was released. It was a Really Big Deal. To me, Gish and Siamese Dream are indisputable end-to-end masterworks of the era, and the Pisces Iscariot collection gathered together some quiet classics. So Mellon Collie was released with great expectation and considered closely in smoky dorm rooms for the better part of a year. This thing is neither a masterwork nor a classic. It remains as stubbornly bloated and overcooked today as was upon release. Lots of highlights; too many lowlights. The rat in a cage and the loneliess is happiness and god is empty stuff, coupled with the prog rock production, revealed Billy Corgan to be the clumsy and hamfisted rock writer he remains to this day. The rockers are weaker than the gentler stuff. I still love the second half of the second disc; there's some beautiful music there. And to be fair there's plenty of excellent songs sprinkled throughout. But getting from start to finish remains a slog for me, so many years later. A mixed bag, still. 3 stars.
First Smashig Pumpkins album I’ve ever heard
I was expecting to hate this one. While I already knew and liked Bullet With Butterfly Wings I hadn't really listened to much more of The Smashing Pumpkins. Imagining a whole 2 hours of that same sound seemed awful to me. While I do think this album is... entirely too long, I liked it better than anticipated. The main vocalist can be grating, but thankfully swaps it up enough that he's not always going for that "shrieky" sound. Also there were some songs that really enjoyed musically so I'll be taking more from this than I thought. Since it was so long, a lot of it started to bleed together, and I honestly have no clue how I even felt about most of the second half. I very much think if this was shorter, more edited down, or even split into two albums I would be giving this an additional star. As is I really debate if this is more of a 2 or 3 star album for me. There are great songs on here doing a lot of heavy lifting to make me want to give it a 3, but when I consider the entirety of the album and how forgettable a lot of it felt (probably mostly due to length and fatigue) I really want to make it a 2. Since I suppose that makes it a 2.5 and I have been rounding up my 3.5s, I'll make it a 3. This is really making me want a half star system though.
I remember how disappointed I was when this first came out and I bought it. I love, really love Gish and Siamese Dream and I didn't really like this, especially the tracks that got the most airplay. It was the last SP album I ever bought/listened to. I guess listening to it now almost 20 years later, it's not so bad. 7/10
3.5
Surprisingly enough, I have listened to the lengthy MCatIS in its entirety before. Borrowed it from the public library and listened in one sitting; main memories are that the album is way too long, kinda angry, and very screechy. This time through was not as rough; still way too long but Side A and F are actually good. The middle 2/3s of the album are nearly unlistenable filler with many very similar screeching songs. Length of the album puts this at the top of the 1001 too long album list, and has it come in at (3.1*s)
The Smashing Pumpkins and Mellon Collie are kinda hard to sum up. On the one hand, some of their finest work is absolutely on display. On the other hand, do we need 2+ hours and 30+ songs? After a listen I guess I feel like we do on this one. The huge quantity and wildly varied stylings from melodic ballads, grunge, hard rock, and everything in between are all integral to why this was such a smash on release. I remember the hits from this album were all over the radio for a spell, some of which are all-timers and definitely deserve to remain in the rotation 20+ years later. This album certainly has a reputation. I'm glad I gave it a listen in unison. Despite the fact that it will be a long time before I come back to it I can completely see why an angsty teen or early 20's rocker in the 90's would have fully identified with this. It's a solid album and great project despite some question marks. I fully understand why it catapulted SP and Billy Corgan up a couple levels for a bit. Billy Corgan has become a bit of a blowhard and the other SP work I've tested over the years has done very little for me but it shouldn't detract from Mellon Collie. Not my favorite but it belongs on the 1001. 2.93 stars
3.5★ Not exactly 2 hours of nonstop Greatness but there is indeed lots to like and at times even love about this. Certainly easy to admire the sonic eclecticism, though I personally prefer the poppier/dreamer/rockier stuff to the more metallic songs (Tales of a Scorched Earth in particular is quite woeful, though X.Y.U is decent). My biggest reservation lies in the vocals, vocals which are often unable to hit high enough registers when trying to be emotional and sound rather Billy-from-across-the-street type of unexceptional in the heavier material, though not without their moments. Lyrics aren't always a strength either. Too many songs liked to list but the ones that really knocked my socks off are Tonight, Tonight, To Forgive (this one in particular hit me hard), and Thirty-Three.
I HATE DOUBLE ALBUMS!!!!
The Smashing Pumpkins have never pricked my interest and not aware of any of their stuff. So this was another welcome adventure into the unknown that this list throws up. The first track was lovely and melodic but this proved to be the best bit of this album. After a great start the album became a bit heavy for my tastes and confirmed what I always thought TSP were all about. I thought the lead vocals were also a bit sharp and whiny and got on my nerves after a while. However, I was listening whilst ironing and found myself once or twice moving to some of the heavy riffs around the ironing table so not all bad. All in all a mid 2/5 but nearer 3 than 2. 3/5 6/6/24
Double albums that aren't 'conceptc albums always fall foul of being just too damn long. While Mellon Collie is incredibly enjoyable, it isn't enjoyable for 2 hours. 6.5/10
A great single album hidden inside a double album. I'm not against a long album as long as it earns it, but I feel like with some cutting this could have been a front to back no skip album, but instead we have a lot of I memorable filler splitting up the moments of genius. The album's sequencing is also something I'm not a fan of. Multiple times they go straight from a nice subdued pretty song into just a wall of distortion, which while I can see what they were going for, is just completely ineffective in my eyes. Bump it: Galapagos, 1979, Jelly Belly, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby Skip it: Where Boys Fear To Tread, Cupid De Locke, An Ode To Noone, Tales Of A Scorched Earth
A decent album, classic songs Top tracks: Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, To Forgive, 1979
I like this you can cancel me if you want but I love that it shifts genres midway through. I like the second half more, even though my favorites are in the first half, when it is more like whiny. The more mellow indie first half sounds a little folk and it also has way more harp and shoegaze vibes.

Bullet With Butterfly Wings is a great song. If I had to listen to an entire album, I would find the vocals annoying.
Loooong - but still beautiful. Some great tracks throughout. But it can be difficult to stay focused for the entire album.
Some bangers but my gosh it felt like there was some filler
I understand why this album is on here but I am not a big Pumpkins fan.
There was a time in the musical zeitgeist when a turn of phrase as farcical as "Emptiness is loneliness and loneliness is cleanliness and cleanliness is godliness, and God is empty just like me" would score you a Top 10 hit on actual radio. The year was 1995, kids, and this fucking band was inescapable. Especially "Tonight, Tonight" -- which I think may be one of the overwrought songs ever recorded. There's no mistaking that Billy Corgan can write angsty songs. A LOT of angsty songs. But his desire to be an artiste gets in the way of what should be something you can enjoy listening to. And I've never really liked his voice. What's interesting to me listening to all two hours of this monstrosity is that there are some songs where he actually sounds *good* and his voice lines up with the music. But his screeching (like on the horrid X.Y.U) just puts teeth on edge. And noisy guitar can be fine -- but some of this is just noodling. That said, there are some songs that have aged nicely. I've always liked "Muzzle" -- it's a great stadium rock song. "33" makes me think of Rolling Rock beer. In The Arms of Sleep is strangely affecting. But dear lord does the back half of Disc 2 just drag and drag. This is the Pumpkins "Use Your Illusion" -- which would have been great if it would have been a single rather than a double album. Same here -- you could compress this down to a single disc with the same range of styles and not lose anything.
Much prefer the debut album, classic double album that’s too ambitious in my opinion. 2.6
2 hours is egregious. I remember Alain said he listened to the 5 hour long deluxe version which is a little crazy. I liked the first disc more, the screeching vocals worked for some of the tracks, mostly because they were more high tempo. The second disc was mostly boring, wasn’t a fan of the slower tracks and the others didn’t sound great.
Not exactly my cup of tea on first listen, will give it another listen at some point though as I did actually quite like what I heard
Certainly a couple of good tunes in here, but it's not nearly as good as I remember. Even "Bullet" and "Tonight, Tonight" don't do much for me any more, it seems. "Love" isn't bad. "Thirty-three" and "1979" have stood the test of time, though. The "novelty" songs ("We only come out..." and "Lily") are still just that. Can't take them seriously - and I can't imagine that we were meant to.
I heard Cherub Rock in August ‘93 when it came out, and slowly over the next year, really absorbed it. It’s energy and Corgan’s way of tapping into your frustrations and rebellion at that age really resonated. That album is an absolute classic. I got into the history of rock and popular music when I went back to college that fall. Really delved into classic rock, jazz, and jam bands. By the time this album came out in ‘95, and Bullet With Butterfly Wings was the first single, it seemed out of touch. The song itself didn’t seem very good, and leaning into Corgan’s limited vocal range seemed like a terrible idea. I never had interest in hearing the album. It sounded to me like he had sold out to everything he was rebelling against previously. This rat-in-a-cage refrain sounded like a forced idea to sell this “rebellion”. I heard Tonight, Tonight, and then 1979. Tonight felt even more like them going pop, but 1979’s pop sensibilities worked for me. In short, I had no interest in listening to this album. Sounded to me like it was made for the pop charts. So now I’m finally listening to it. And … it’s OK. Some good songs here. Some not good songs there. Some tracks that are a little too grandiose or self-congratulatory. But overall it is a perfectly OK album.
Good album. One that I have a copy of. 1979 is the stand out track
A couple of great songs and a bunch of average ones. Pretty good album for the 90’s
"Tonight, tonight" was the only song I added to my library. Originally, scored the album as a 4. It's great chill music to put on in the background or drive to, however, I'm subtracting a point due to the length. Disc 2 is an unnecessary addition. If music is a journey, I felt I was driving 500miles nowhere listening to this.
It's good but just too long. If this were two separate albums it might have been better, but there doesn't seem to be a reason that this is a 2 hour album. Nonetheless, there are some great performances here, like on 1979, Farewell and Goodnight, and Tonight Tonight. The lead's voice isn't great, but it's unique and matches their style well. Great 90s rock, but could be a lot better.
Gave it a listen - not my taste
A good album, but way too long for me
I’d always meant to give this a go but never got round to it. It’s alright but goes on a bit
Wow, that was a slog. I liked how the vibes changed so often, but of course that means there were plenty of songs that I didn't vibe with. I did enjoy some songs, but I don't think any of them enough to seek them out again. This album was too long. More often than not, I would notice a track change and then several minutes later would think "bloody hell, we're still on this song?" We don't need 7+ minute songs.
I used to listen to this album all the time in middle school. Haven't played the whole thing through since then probably. I remember really liking the whole album and listening to it again after so many years, I don't think it really holds up as well as I thought it would. There are a few fantastic songs on this album - Tonight Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Zero, 1979. Zero is probably my favorite on the album. But outside of those the record kind of drags a little bit. I think the 2 hour play time is excessive. I can see why this album has such mixed reviews. Billy Corgan certainly isn't for everyone. Assuming this is the only album on this list from Smashing Pumpkins, I'm surprised they chose this one instead of Siamese Dream. I know this one was commercially more successful and was higher up on the charts but I think Siamese Dream is a better album. 3.5/5 from me, rounding to 3 because it should have been half as long.
Not the thing to listen to when your packing (stressed)
Similar to the previous Smashing Pumpkins album, I still think the way the vocalist sings is really weird and off-putting. But songs and instrumentation are surprisingly high quality, at least on the first disc. And that's the main problem here for me (apart from the singing): the quality difference between the first and second discs is massive. I'd like to rate the first one 4 stars, but the second one a mere 2 stars. It feels more like a collection of B-sides than an album. Instead of 2 hours of some good stuff and some bad stuff by The Smashing Pumpkins, this could easily have been just 1 hour of only good stuff.
cool kids never had the time
Don’t know a lot of the Smashing Pumpkins catalog and was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed the music/arrangement Of their songs. Not a fan of the lead singers voice, but he does a good job with what he has.
Not sure why I like this screaming better than other screaming, but I do. Maybe it’s the variety of songs - the melodic ones that come after the yelling ones. The voice isn’t great, so it’s not that. My 45-year old self only likes about half this double album so 3 stars.
Handful of good songs, the rest of this bloated 2-disc album felt self indulgent and forgettable
It has all the 90's Emo angst that I typically adore, but listening to the entire album became a bit more grinding and repetitive than I needed on a Monday afternoon. An expansive work, with 2 volumes showcasing Billy Corgan's prolific output and talent. I liked a few tracks that had escaped my attention two decades ago including Cupid De Locke. 1979 remains the star of the show and made it worth getting to it on Volume 2.
2024-05-05...
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last Smashing Pumpkins album on this list, but honestly this was a treat! I enjoyed most of the songs a bunch, but like with a lot of longer albums I did get fatigued by the end. Favourite track: Zero.
Buena Banda
the singles are good but he is just so damn pretentious...
80% of the album was 80% more rage than I expected. The start and end of the album was rly good, could have cut 8 of the middle songs
I was hoping this would make me have a greater appreciation for this band. Didn't work. Definitely worth a listen, but run of the mill 90s grunge, which never really spoke to me. I appreciate what that genre did to save Rock & Roll, however.
3.5 out of 5. Lots of standouts, but the album is just sooo long.
A lot of the same.
Popular alternative rock/grunge album from the mid-1990s. There are some really great songs on it (Tonight, Tonight, Cupid de Locke, We Only Come Out At Night, just to name a few) which could make this album an easy 4 if it wasn't 2-hour long. It's longer than any other album I've had so far, even longer the afaik the sole triple album on this list. It's just way too much, and too long. It's a shame that they couldn't put put out an album with the best 13-14 songs and instead they also released songs that are well below the level of other songs. I love the video clip for Tonight, Tonight and also the album cover for nostalgic reasons, but I feel the album as a whole doesn't deserve more than 3 (3.5) out of 5.

Als Mellon Collie herauskam, hat mich das Werk gar nicht gefallen. Heute war es schon eher, mein Fall, aber so richtig vom Hocker hat es mich nicht gehauen. Gute Konzeption, gute Unterhaltung
not horrible.
The one song I've heard before and a ton of others. It's comfy pop rock or something, and it's decent in my ears.
Very melancholic and grungy. The Pumpkins defined a sound of a generation of angsty teenagers. Listening to this record again after some decades, it still doesn’t resonate with me and it didn’t when I was an angsty teenager. It’s not a terrible record, just not my kind of sound, but I appreciate what it represents and how it shaped the landscape of music.
Hadn't heard much of these guys beyond the big radio hits and those hold up. Unfortunately, the rest of the two hour runtime isn't as good and a solid chunk goes beyond "not as good" and into "just not good". I think I would have given this a 4 if it was average length. Points for diversity though.
*Another* Smashing Pumpkins album?!!! I'm not sure why they'd really warrant two (or more?) entries in the 1001 album collection, and it always seems like a perverse form of torture to inflict a double album on any but true fans anyway. (Worse, the YouTube music link went to some 5-hour version of the album with 92 songs, which was fortunately so long that I knew it wasn't the version I should have gotten.) I've always wanted to like them more than I do. And this album didn't help, with it's annoying Belle-Epoque-style cover and title (although in some ways they occasionally *do* have a Hugo-like aesthetic, so maybe it's fitting?). However, at least there's more range on this album than on "Siamese Dream"...
my ex used to listen to this album and so I've already paid my dues. I'm sure it's fine if only I could remember it....
What a range of emotions. I didn't realize the album was a double disc, it seemed to mostly blend together after a while.
OK
2 hours. Buckle up. At least it is a reputable band and not someone unheard of so it's a bit easier to prepare for this. Album feels like a bit of a grab bag with some whimsical sounding songs and some grungy songs. Definitely some of their more popular songs sprinkled in here as well. As with most albums, they tend to lose points for me when they are this long. The singer's voice is not that wonderful, but the instruments go! Tales of a Scorched Earth was pretty bad. As was XYU. I think there is a lot of good stuff in this album and I really like the variety, but I feel like as it gets longer I start to pick up more on the songs I don't like. It's like they're cutting their product with filler. The musicians should leave that practice to the cartels. Definitely has a some high 4 potential, but it slowly crept into the 3.5 category and then I was just happy for it to be over. Side 1 was significantly better than Side 2.
Oof this is a long one. Apparently they went into it with the Beatles White album as inspiration and says it is "The Wall for Gen X." That's a pretty high pedestal to put yourself on for a 2 hour album. The first half of the album def has some jams that I know and love but never necessarily seek out. All in all pretty solid just wondering if they can keep it up for another *checks watchless wrist* hour and a half. Cupid de Locke is a random pretty one that's in a different vein than most other Smashing Pumpkins I know. Really beautiful sections of Porcelina. Was worried looking at the 9 minutes but that was highly enjoyable. Nothing sticking out too much on the back half so far, but obviously know 1979 which is good enough. Tales of a Scorched Earth is probably my least fav song so fav. Don't really like the mixing of it something sounds off. Then goes into a song Thru the Eyes of Ruby which I'm enjoying. This album took awhile to get through and that's probably why I find it a bit disjointed. Way too long to be as enjoyable as it could be. Middling 3.
music 5; "singing" 1
Well, here I am listening to this album. When The Smashing Pumpkins hit it big with this album, I was intrigued and I wanted very much to like them. Indeed, I do like some of their songs, but listening to this album is a bit hard. This is my first time and here are my thoughts. My first reaction was...wow! so many discs to listen to. And on Spotify, at least, the reissue is not in the order of the original, so I am painstakingly flipping between tracks to listen to the original order. I am a traditionalist. I like the sound. I really like the singles. But unfortunately, all of the songs start blending together and they aren't so distinctive. My feeling is that this could've been a great record had there been an editor to cut it down to a manageable size. There is good stuff here, but it gets lost among everything. This is just my opinion, but there's no way that I could listen to nearly 3 hours of their music nonstop.
Fantastic mammoth album, though its length drags it more than expected. The singles in this are iconic, and some of the deeper cuts occupy a privileged spot in the Smashing Pumpkins' discography. Unfortunately, I'm very strict when listening to double albums, so the lesser songs did affect my experience.
The occasional utterly amazing track mixed up with way too many oki-ish songs . I quite liked it when i was younger , but not my thing anymore as a full album .
Nice, but gets kinda repetitive. Double feature that could have been trimmed a little more imo
I love Siamese Dream. Top 10 album for me. I couldn’t wait to buy this when it was released! Anddddd never cared it for it much. I still want to punch stuff when I hear tonight tonight come on. Zero slays
I have always like their sound instrument wise, but they sure are lyrically depressing. I guess the album is aptly named.
Some of the songs are too much but others like the first song allow the listener to clear their mind from the madness made out of sadness
Ok look, this album has some really good songs on it like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "1979", "Zero", but it just doesn't need to be so freaking long. I do not understand why Billy thought making a double album would be a great idea. I don't want to listen to his voice for 2 hours. It starts to sound whiny after 2 songs. However I did like the variety between lullaby feel songs and the grittier, grungier feeling songs, that made this not absolute agony to sit through. I feel this deserves a 3.5 but I can't give it that so it's getting a 3.
it's a solid "meh" album. like the variety of sounds & tempos, some solid tracks, but the super long run time is a negative. and it's a whole lot of Billy.
A very long album. I could not listen to it in day. Some of the songs are very edgy and had a hard sound to them.
A couple good songs, but generally a blah album for me. I just never really liked their sound.
Could have, and should have, been a single album. It was ok, just way too long.
William Corgan is a good songwriter. The man writes a hell of a hook. Just look at his collaborations with Courtney Love. Billy Corgan is a godawful front man. His delivery is just trash. I know I suffered from pumpkin fatigue because I was still a young person when this album dropped, and you simply couldn't escape it. And the audacity of dropping a double album when you're a pop band is the height of hubris. Tonight, Tonight was on heavy rotation on MTv for, like, *ever*, and it's just not that good (yes, despite the fact it has a killer hook). And the band fell apart a few years after this release. So, yeah. Hubris, then. All that aside. 1979 is one of the best-arranged pop songs there ever has been, and I *will* fight you on this. I had never sat down and listened to this whole thing, and many parts of this (very too long) release surprised me. Some even delighted me. But I still have a visceral cringe reaction to Billy Corgan's voice, and you can't take that away from me.
3.5. Some hits. A lot of filler.
3.3 stars rounded down. "1979" and "Tonight, Tonight" are beautiful masterpieces. Even second string singles like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "Zero" are great. It is unfortunate these tracks are embedded in 2 hours of mediocre filler.
The songs on this album wasn't bad but they just where not for me. And personally this album was way to long for me, when i lissen to new music i like to take good time and really lissen to the songs too find out which ones ii like and what stands out to me, so if the album was shorter or i had more time to lissen to this i feel like it would have been more enjoyable.
Pas de quoi faire un album de 2h hein
Interesting mix of their talents.
A massive, daring, and expansive follow-up to the masterpiece, "Siamese Dream". It's basically about two hours of them exploring sounds beyond their usual creamy brand of grunge. Experimenting with different instruments, including salt shakers and scissors. They would put as many as 70 guitar tracks in one song. Corgan reportedly played the guitar until his fingers "saw blood", and turning up the amp so loud the whole thing was on the verge of exploding. The resulting tracks range from acoustic melancholies to heavy pieces that almost qualify as metal. Overall, it's a sprawling experience that is more exhausting than uplifting, personally.
This was my brother's teenaged angst album. I'd never listened to the whole thing through, and well I'm not sure I'm better off for it. It was so long. So so long. Fairly samey after a while. I still liked a couple of the tracks at least.
Undeniably epic. But I still just don’t love that whiny voice of Billy’s, okay?? I’M SORRY, internet.
It did not need to be this long. I enjoyed it but lordy. I was also shocked to read the wiki and that this has been certified diamond and was the the number one album on billboard. It just goes to show how weird of a time the 90s were for music. Also that’s what she said to my first sentence
The new holder of the Skyrim award. Such a huge amount/variety of content. It really is a sign of the times though. If I had to pay $10 for an album like this vs $10 for a 45 minute album, the value would be insane. The problem is that time is a lot more sacred in music now because of accessibility and streaming. I don’t just have a cd in my car, instead I can stream basically whatever I want. As a result, this album becomes a chore to listen to after some time. That being said, they spread their hits out very well on the album and it was definitely generally enjoyable. It would at least be a 4 if they took 40 minutes of the best songs and made an album out of that. I really do applaud the band for the work as a whole. It’s just not captivating enough for me to not feel inconvenienced listening to the whole thing.
It was pretty cool! Some of the slower songs were nice i didnt love the lead singer's voice though.
Zero brought up childhood memories. Definitely a precursor to emo music of the 2000s. Not totally my jam.
Quite good no album has to be over 2 hours tho.
Good lo-fi down low. Despite all my rage, I’m still just a rat in a cage.
id like the loud parts more on a faster day and the soft parts more on a slower one. shockingly long, there absolutely ARE good songs on this album, if you have the patience to listen through 5 okay ones in between each. favorite new track is To Forgive
Weird one for me, absolutely loved half of it and absolutely hated the other half.
Dużo za długie. Ale nie najgorsze. 3/5
wow first song has over 1m views right off the bat nice. sounds nice and calming and beautiful so far...no words tho.... next song tonight tonight has SIXTEEN MILLION VIEWS omg and it has lyrics. its an alright song. its really intense and like...a movie soundtrack or something stopped listening at jellybelly. continue from there
Somehow angstier than I had already thought from Bullet with Butterfly Wings. I do really like 1979, but didn't much enjoy the rest of the album.
Better, but soooo long
A lot of great stuff here (first six tracks might have you hovering over the 5 stars - and that doesn't even include the best track of the bunch, "1979"), but there's just SO. MUCH. FILLER! One of the most "double album-y" double albums of all time.
I'm not sure this needed to be a double album.
- Alt for langt - For generic - Få gode sanger + Et par bangers
Not as cohesive of an album as I would have liked. Many songs felt underwhelming and out of place at times. Siamese Dream feels like more of a complete listening experience.
rly loving the spotify background graphic with them jumping and falling. relate. they should play this in more dentists office waiting rooms. already had some songs liked from this album but hearing it all the way through is not the way to hear these songs for me.
i mean it's the smashing pumpkins alright... billy corgi... its real long... its got some ballads and bangers... Galapogos...
Um yeah so do you all know this band, The Smashing Pumpkins? They are really underground... yeah... I'm sure you've never heard of them. If I lived in the 90's, absorbed in the thralls of Grunge this would make me go absolute feral. I think I prefer Siamese Dream but they're just about at the same level - middle of the road and not something I would necessarily listen to on a day off. Fortunately for Virgin Record Sales, the grind never stops. This album is so long, a lot of the songs start to meld together when listening. A few standouts other than the obvious are Here Is No Why, Cupid De Locke, In The Arms Of Sleep, Lily (My One And Only) - I am a sucker for love songs, and Farewell and Goodnight. The last one has female vocals on it and I love to hear more than Corgan being sad. I enjoy Billy Corgan's voice, I think he writes emo ass lyrics (seen in every song... my dreams are dead yada yada ok chat gpt... I am kidding some lyrics are good). I was tired of the music by the second disc. It's super long and obviously Corgan is working through stuff. Fun facts: - The Smashing Pumpkins headlined LalaPalooza in 1994. - Prior to Madison Square Garden Shows, keyboardist Melvoin died from a heroin OD and the drummer Chamberlin survived his OD but was FIRED. - Female bassists :) D'Arcy Wretsky played for majority of bands big career and was replaced by Hole Bassist Auf der Maur
Two... hours? There are a number of good tracks on this, and it has the iconic "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "1979" "Zero" (my son's favorite track of theirs). But... two hours of listening to Billy Corgan whine is asking a LOT. At least this isn't really a concept album; sure there's a thematic concept, but that's it. "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage..." It's such a great line, it's undeniable. Still... two hours? That's asking too much of me.
Why is this such a long fucking album :c Intro track was really good actually love the instrumental Okay the fucking singer sounds like he has half a pussy and a full dick in his mouth I came in here expecting to hate this but I really didn’t mind it, atleast so far I haven’t hated it, the lyrics are kinda stupid but I like the rock grunge feel to it. They tried way to hard to make a rock album that it’s embarrassingly obvious that they had no clue what they were doing None the less… Who ever is singing this shit should kill himself 3.1/5
Best Songs: Tonight Tonight, Zero Listen Again: Probably not
Definite melancholia inducing album. Gave me serious flashbacks to the O.C. but I've no idea if they even used this for any part of the soundtrack.... Some parts had too much screaming for my liking but that's a personal preference. Favs: "Tonight, Tonight", "Thru the Eyes of Ruby", "Stumbleine", "Beautiful", "Lily (My One and Only)",
This album have been describe has "The Wall for generation X", it got a pretty good artwork and the CD have cool design and a booklet with the lyrics of the songs that reminds us of a old story book. The album is goddman long too, i'm never sure about double album to be honnest, any of them, sometimes they are just too long with very random and "useless" songs, even if the album have a concept like this one, or the wall. The album goes from instrumental, to art rock with an orchestra to classic grunge and alt rock, its pretty intersting. Some songs that stand out, among 28 we have Tonight Tonight (with the orhestra is very beautiful) JellyBelly one of the hardest song on the reccord. Zero is also pretty hard and its one of their best known I like the riff in Here Is No Why The others song are not bad, simply not so much impactfull i think, they range from calm and melodic song, to heavy in your face alt rock.
An album ruined with hubris. It's too god damn long
An absolute mess of an album, incoherent, way too long, jumps between styles way too quickly, and the guy really struggles to sing (which isn't an issue when he stays in his lane, but he really doesn't). But, it's punctuated by some absolutely great singles - Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, and Tonight, Tonight are really good songs that don't overstay their welcome, unlike the album as a whole. Makes it quite hard to rate, so I'll go (unsurprisingly) down the middle with a 3, the incoherence and the filler balancing out the patchy greatness.
Thought it was alright. Good music, didn’t love the singing, because I’m not a hard rock fan
Moderately interesting, some good tunes.
6.5/10 Really liked a lot of this, Corgan’s voice in particular was amazing, hypnotic, lovely. More variety in genres than expected Some really great tunes But a few major caveats No studio album should be over 2 hours long, a bit of editing could have improved this greatly Case in point: it stayed on concept, but the lullaby final quarter was weird and unsuccessful for me Wasn’t in love with the harder/metal stuff Best: 1979
A lot more varied in its sound than I imagined it be. A decent representation of a lot of different styles from the 90s. Great album to showcase this era.
Boy starting off with a challenge. Never been a big Pumpkins fan, only song I really knew was 1979. To kick off with a double album from a band I don't care for much was real difficult to stay focused on, but I persevered. Liked it more than I expected to. Where Boys Fear to Tread was good, I also enjoyed the thrashy Tales Of a Scorched Earth, and Thru the Eyes of Ruby. Still not sure if I like Billy's voice at all but his lyrics are good
Classic. A little long!
My first time listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. I like some of it especially the heavier stuff which is more accommodating to the lousy vocals. I’m surprised I made it through the whole two hours which I guess says something good about it. Cool cover.
Irre wie unterschiedlich mal extremer Hardrock und dann wie ganz soft
Some really good, like “tonight tonight” but not exactly my genre.
this is my first time listening to the Smashing Pumpkins – there are some nice songs and the music is definitely pleasant enough to have on in the background but I'm not drawn in enough to deliberately listen to their music after this. the album title might be my favourite thing about it
At first I thought I didn’t like it at all but it has some really great songs. But the voice is not really my kind of voice.
This album is a Rollercoaster but not in a good way. Some bangers but the slower songs kill the vibe. Though I'm intrigued to check out more.
good more rock than I would think
Musically nice enough. Vocally, generally annoyingly vocal. Lyrically, hard to make out. Kind of fun in their over-the-top-ness. "Stumbleine" is a nice track, though.
The world is indeed a vampire. Before I begin, I want to quickly reflect on this video game that my roommates and I played prior to the start of the 2nd semester of my freshman year. One of my roommates had a Sega and this game had to do with Jack the Ripper and vampires. We played it for 4 days straight to solve it. Our RA lived next door and played the whole time with us. And he was really in to SP. Played them all the time. So that was my first introduction to the band, in the context of vampires. Leading to their creation of this album 2 years later. Great times... Also, I've listened to this one many times, so I don't know what kind of review I'll give here. Its a looong album. I always loved how disc 1 opened. My roommate had a gigantic stereo, with a 100 disc changer. It was insane. And this album/song would get pumped. Nice growing sound getting into the album. And Tonight, Tonight was one of my favorites. Lots of pumpkins songs played. I just listened. Some I like, and some are just ok. In general across Gish, Siamese Dream, and MCIS, I always liked the lighter songs (other than BWBW). My fav on this one was always 1979, which for disc listening wasn't ideal, since I liked disc 2 overall much less than disc 1. I went ahead and called time of death on the song after 1979 because I didn't want Billy yelling at me any more. I feel this is exactly the same behavior I had back in 1995. And this was the last of the great SP albums I think. They had a pretty good run.
I enjoyed this album but it’s far too long
There's songs that I don't mind, or even like, but this is way too long. 3/5
It was ok!
Stupid long with generally solid songs with some really good ones like tonight, tonight and 1979, there were some stinkers but otherwise solid.
MC&TIS The well known songs (Tonight, Bullet, 1979 etc) and then To Forgive, Cupid de Locke, Galapagos, Porcelina of the Dark Oceans, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, By Starlight, Farewell and Goodnight stood out Jellybelly, Zero (terrible lyrics), An Ode to No One, Tale of a Scorched Earth - not a fan of those at all Take me Down sounds a lot like a song from a musical, particularly the rising chorus, which kind of chimes with Dan’s Queen observation, they do have those slightly showtune/musical theatre aspects some of the melodies. We only come out a night has a similar Queen vibe too. That’s not a criticism btw. Generally, like on SD, not a fan of the harder songs, the slower tempo ones are more interesting melodically and atmospherically, and I think his voices suits those songs better. Lots of great musical hooks and instrumentation, I didn’t really realise what a great gift for melody he has. I admire the ambition and genuinely earnest pretension of it, but it is A LOT of music and whether it’s me or the music that falters, his voice does start to grate on mover the course of 2 hrs. I think I’d be likely to go back to SD more frequently than this but a very enjoyable listen none the less. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️ Prob closer to 4 but the length is why I’m prevaricating
Some of the songs are great...but some of them I can't really relate to? The radio airplay songs seemed to have been standouts
Enjoyed. Some of the longer pieces I wasn’t crazy about but always enjoyed his singing style and the sound of the strings, which I like about all these grungy bands.
Meh
Ziemlich metalllastig. Nicht so mein Ding.
Familiar with quite a bit of this
Curious album. It's got positives - but negatives too. Definitely genre bending, or rather genre extending. The grunge vibe and whining lyrics are putting me off.... but there's something to this album & band that I'll listen to again to see if I see more. For now, it's a 3
Wow this took long to finish. Some great tracks, I feel like I need to relisten to this album to fully grasp the intricacies of each song, especially with how good the production on nearly every song is, but I might not be able to revisit this album for a long time considering how long it is. 2.5/5
The music was good but the vocals are so annoying
Listened to this while driving from Escondido to Palm Springs. This is another one of those albums where my partner knew every single word to both albums. I of course recognized the singles. I was never a fan of Billy Corgan's voice...and it still is a grating sound to me. The double album is a dangerous thing. It is so easy to get self indulgent and bloated. I think there is a 5 star single album buried in here...but there is just so much other stuff padding that experience. I wanted to rate it higher...but this gets a 3.
Nostalgic, good album. Can be a bit overly noisy in moments and corgans vocals are hard to listen to sometimes.
Solid nostalgia. Very long, towards the end I had enough.
Loved the overall tone of the offering.
I really wanted to like this album more than I did. There's some great songs on here--maybe some of The Smashing Pumpkins best--but two hours of his voice gets to be a bit rough. I'd rather cherry pick the songs on here than listen to the whole thing. 3.5/5
A- super long B- killer album
Some great songs but insanely too long of length. Some filler. Would have been an ez 4 if they picked the best songs and made it not a double album. Ez 3.5
Quite a long album but some decent tracks here and there
This was decent. Definitely plenty of bangers on this album. But a good amount meh songs. Good album overall. But his voice is kinda annoying. Like some of the lyrics were good but I couldn’t enjoy hearing them lol. 3.5
Pompus but with some knockout moments
aaaaaaaaaaa i like some of the songs on here but overall it feels a little……… like i’m just saying did it have to be 2 hours long
A nice album, I liked the style of music. I recalled liked the song 1979.
If ‘MCATIS’ this was trimmed down to an hour, or even the length of one CD, 75 mins or so, it would have dibs on being the greatest rock album of the 90s. As it is, a lot of it is still good and there aren’t too many low points, but clocking in at 2 hours, it’s a lot to consume in one go, and that 2nd hour isn’t quite as strong as the first. And so, for that It loses points. Sometimes less is more.
Siamese Dream is one of my favorite albums and when this album was released I remember being done with the Smashing Pumpkins. I thought this was such a bloated project, I didn't care for the overly commercial production, it just felt soulless. I do love this part "All songs written by Billy Corgan" - I love how uniquely original the music sounds, and while his lyrics aren't deep, they are his. Not my favorite from the band, still really good.
Pulling up this this album kind of blew my mind a little bit. I've seen the album art loads of times. I've heard the singles for years, but I never realized they were part of a 2-hour long behemoth album. What a crazy thing to create. As a whole, the album felt kind of like an entire night's sleep, with each song being a different dream. Some songs a quiet and peaceful, while others were chaotic and angry, just to dissolve into another whiny dream in another song. Waking up at the end of the album, it all felt a little shallow and meaningless, but the experience was kind of cool.
Good songs but this is SO L O N G !
Kept my attention for 2hrs, good variability, enjoyed the calmness of the final track after the album
On All Saints Day, whilst meandering through suburbia, I saw a kid going door-to-door disfiguring Halloween decorations. What are you doing, I asked. Smashing pumpkins, the kid replied. Care to join? I stood at the entrance of the cul-de-sac and watched. The kid continued with methodological precision and aesthetic flair. Some squashes had their innards strewn out, others their tops knocked off, yet others merely bruised, or knocked to one side. A gaggle of fellow observers had joined me by the time the kid had completed the tour around the cul-de-sac. The kid headed out grinning, and proceeded down the next cul-de-sac. Shocked onlookers whispered aghast, surely not another cul-de-sac? Such ambition!
I’ve never made it all the way through this double album, despite professing a love for the band on and off through my junior high years. I tried again recently and same. I get turned off quickly by the heavier songs and guttural screeching into the mic. There’s no denying Corgan’s beautiful guitar playing, so I’m not not a fan, but it’s just never fully clicked. Let’s give it another go. First off, the hits still hit. They’re great. When their songs have dynamic range, I’m in. When it’s all raspy vocals and loud distortion the whole way through, I need a break. When it’s all slow and mopey (not that there’s anything wrong with that), I need a break. Thankfully, the track listing mixes it up every song or two. Had I previously stuck it out through those songs I wasn’t feeling, I’d have gotten much farther. I’m certainly happy that I’m forcing myself to listen regardless. If for no other reason than to know which songs to skip in the future, and to know that there are more gems in here than just the radio hits. But yeah it’s still way too long for me to give it more than 3/5 I can’t finish this review without mentioning that that is not how you spell Galapagos, but it’s still one of the aforementioned hidden gems.
Interesting, very various.
Not bad
It was pretty long. Too long imho.
Fav song: fuck you
I was expecting to hate this but I was pleasantly surprised and only disliked it. They're imitators of grunge but they add a spoonful of sugar to make it easier for the general public's ears. The album has its well known hits and is painfully long.
Whew! I didn't listen to all 5 hours & 52 minutes in in Spotify. Fortunately the original release was much shorter - only a triple LP. Some good hard rock and interesting variations. The hits are okay.
There's a couple absolute classic on here. But it's definitely too long, not enough variety or substance for a 2 hour album. Best songs are 1979 and Bullet with butterfly wings (this song wil randomly jump in my head ever since I first heard it)
Hard. Niet per se verwacht.
Thru eyes of Ruby, banger Tonight, tonight, nice Overall prima
Not what I usually listen to but I appreciate The art
Great band but not their best
Good nostalgia album but very long
This is a pretty decent album but it's way overlong. I used to be a big Smashing Pumpkins fan and listened to this one quite a bit back in middle school and high school. I've since come to realize what an exhausting blowhard Billy Corgan is (or has become?). This is a pretty good indicator as to why this album is a bloated, alright double-album rather than a really great single disc album. He doesn't think any of his shit stinks. I'd go for a higher score if there weren't so many tracks that I just find non-essential and skip over on every listen. This definitely has some of their best songs on it ('1979', 'Muzzle', etc.) but is just really hurt by the long runtime and filler tracks that could have come out as a B-side record first. That's what happens when you decide you're going to make a double-album before you even start writing/recording (from wiki: "From the outset, the band intended the new record to be a double album"). Standout Tracks (Disc 1): Tonight Tonight, Jellybelly, Zero, Here Is No Why, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Muzzle Standout Tracks (Disc 2): Where Boys Fear to Tread, 1979, Stumbleine, X.Y.U., By Starlight
Way too long, but with good songs
Was just okay. Don’t love the voice
3 - This was a pretty long one. There's some tracks that stand out to me, but I honestly don't remember a good number of them. I can't imagine going back and relistening to this due to the length, though I definitely appreciate the songs I do like.
Sommige nummers een 2, sommige nummers een 4(+). Hele album maar een 3 gegeven.
okay it’s catchy but it’s just not that good alright?
Very long winded, some really good songs in there. Ultimately a bit of a slog but I recognize it's place
Not Bad. Little long. Songs started to sound the same.
With the large number of tracks there plenty of filler here. Some gold too.
-Some of these lyrics are corny af. -Hard to ignore the standout songs on this album. - this album is 2 hrs long. Wtf -There are some great tracks here but they get kinda lost in the minutia of how many songs there are. I want to give this album a 4 but I'm not going to because I just don't want to listen to half the songs. Very high 3.
ok
50% great. A bit to grungy.
3.5
appreciate the orchestration then it becomes rock overall doesnt really stick to my brain
Very 90's sounding album. Very much enjoyed it
Just ok
Tiene track muy buenos, pero también otros muy malos. No puedo dar calificación mas alta.
Saying this as someone who loves Siamese Dream and could pick a few songs off of this album as some of his favorites of all time: Jesus Fucking Christ Billy, I can’t listen to walls of guitars and your screeching voice for two goddamned hours with multiple 7+ minute tracks in the runtime. You’re lucky none of the actual songs here are bad, because I should probably be hitting you with a 2/5. But goddamnit, “1979” is really so goddamn beautiful.
It’s pretty good but way too long
Great 90s rock album, although maybe not enough meat on the bone for a double-disc. Tracks I like: Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness Tonight Zero Here is No Why Bullet With Butterfly Wings An Ode to No One Muzzle Bodies Thirty-Three 1979
Decent.
Long album with a mixture of genres I enjoyed their poppy stuff more than their rocky stuff
Goes all over the place, but not in a bad way. Gives me the feeling that the band poured their everything into this double album, showing off their versatility. Typical 90's edge, a real product of its time. Couldn't get away with lyrics like this without being satirical. Panic! At the Disco and other emo groups clearly took inspiration from this band, which I was not aware of before listening to this album.
I mostly liked it but two hours is too long
Some great songs, but just too dang long with a lot of meh
Several songs are very impressive musically but Billy Corgan’s voice grates my against my soul
Langt album Ass, ble litt lei av så heavy musikk men slutten på plate to var chill
I love Bullet with Butterfly Wings. 1979 Take me down To forgive
„Despite of my age, I’m still just a cat in a rage“ … oder so ähnlich. Trotzdem noch drei Sterne vong Nostalgie her.
This is My Chemical Romance for dudes that are like 40. I don't really like Bill Corgan's singing voice at all which is probably why I like "1979" so much, because of how much his croaks get drowned out by all the surrounding instruments. Cool album with cool album art. Favorite tracks: "Here Is No Why", "1979", "We Only Come Out At Night", "Beautiful", and "Farewell And Goodnight".
This is a long album... a very long album. Some incredible music on here by my word it drags
wou
wow u know what make this fantastic era-defining album better? dotting a bunch of garbage inbetween all the amazing tracks and padding out the runtime to 2 hours for no reason
I believe there is a good 1 hour 15 minute or less album here, but it is being held back as an album by the bulk that drags this out to 2 hours. Best tracks were Bullet with Butterfly Wings and 1979.
ya du banger mais album bcp trop long
It was pretty good
There are some genius musical ideas on this album. "1979" and "Tonight, Tonight" are really beautiful tracks. But overall, as a record, it's pretty mixed and too long for me to fully revisit.
it has good songs, but i share the same sentiment as ben that the album is too long (don’t even get me started on the 6 hour deluxe album)?
3/5. A solid rock opera but hard to get past some of the songs. The whining singing is definitely a vibe but two hours of it is hard to get through. The music was absolutely gorgeous which is why it definitely isn't bad and a wild ride throughout. I think upon more listens it might go up, when I can differentiate between the songs but two listens gives me a good rundown.
Está bueno el disco. Es una onda Green Day, tiene lindos temas y otros muy malos. Es eterno, tiene mil canciones, lo que aburre.
This album is really good, songs like Tonight, Tonight really caught my attention and many of the heavy songs has tasteful tones reminiscent of Ty Segall. There are many songs I would probably listen to again and again, but I think devoting time to listening to the whole album would be tough and not worth it. Probably should have cut this into two albums with one having the heavier tracks and the other having the indie style songs. Although maybe including all of the track is the reason this album belongs on this list so it's just personal preference of how I like to listen to music
Shoulda been two albums
Reason Season Lifetime That old adage about friends translates to albums just as well. Music we listened to half a lifetime ago can simultaneously feel like an old friend, but whose influence and thrall have since worn thin. In spite of Billy Corgan’s propensity for being a nut job, I did listen to some of the songs with a wistful nostalgic sigh. 1979 and Tonight, Tonight and Bullet with Butterfly Wings all took me back and I glossed over the fact that he just can’t sing. This album was also so long it outstayed its welcome by a long shot. The best thing was on YouTube someone had made a video of some very cute rescue dogs along to Muzzle. So if you were wondering where the fruity dog with endless tristesse was, your melon collie was there. :)
hoo boy this is a lot. A lot of sadness. Infinite, you might say, so plus one for truth in advertising, i guess. but damn, 2 hours is a lot of Billy Corgan. There are good songs on here: 1979, the one about Cupid, that James Iha tune, the last one, a few others, but overall, it was just too much. too much to cover in one day, certainly. maybe if i had more time with this i'd dig it more. also, i didn't love the production. they're clearly rocking the shit out of some of these songs but it doesn't sound nearly as massive as Siamese Dream. So, this is a 3 but I could see it maybe creeping up to a 4 with more time.
So long. I couldn't do this in one or even two sittings b/c of my day so it feels like I can't make an accurate rating. The hits are worth having a listen and songs I didn't know were also enjoyable.
I know this one polarized people it doesn't me. Love the scope, love the guitar sound. Some ace tracks. However. His voice, that Cartman whine is difficult. Its also 2 HOURS. It would make a really good single album.
I liked the drumming, quite a distinctive style. I liked some of the songs: Tonight Tonight, Jellybelly, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Love, Galapogos, Take Me Down, Bodies, XYU, By Starlight.
Tvöfaldar plötur eru undantekningalaust rúnk. Söngvarinn er fáviti en lögin eru góð. Fær ekki fjarka af því ég hata tvöfaldar plötur. 3,5
I guess it's fine, but it's quite long. I don't think this type of music really deserves a 2 hour long album, to be honest. 45 minutes would have been good.
Just reminds me of my older cousin in the 90s
honestly for 6 hours...
The highs are stratospheric but waaaaaaay too long
Well I thought I knew what to expect with this album, having heard "Tonight Tonight" and "1979", but this was totally different. I would have really liked an album that was only the more chill songs on here. The other songs weren't bad, but Billy Corgan's voice didn't do any of them any favors
Great instrumentals. I love 90's rock and this is one of the best examples of it. Great guitar tones and rifs, literally addicting. I have not paid much attention to the lyrics because Billy's vocals make me wanna plunge a knife deep into my ears and I didn't want to dedicate any more attention to them. Enough style variation to not make the 2h feel like an eternity. It was a good experience even though I don't think I will revisit this album anytime soon.
I really enjoyed the first piece of music on this - the piano instrumental. After that, it's OK, but the sheer length of this one makes it really difficult to listen to as a whole piece. Something tighter might have been better here - and I've never objected to long albums on principle. It's just hard when you don't know the band's music perhaps. So, 3 it is then
Ömsom svin, ömsom svatten.
Got no right to be 2 hrs long. That crushing length alone knocks a star off the rating.
its a bit long. i can hear the influence of future alt rock. billie corgan is kinda pretentious isn’t he?
It was a decent album but I do not like the voice of the lead singer. His "singing" sounds quite whiny and annoying. However, there are some good tracks and the music is pretty good. The main problem I had was listening to his voice for far too long because this album goes on for forever. I had to take a break half way through the 28 tracks to try and finish it. The second half definitely has some heavier songs and I enjoyed the change of pace. Highlights: Jellybelly Zero Bullet With Butterfly Wings X.Y.U.
Gave it a 3. Had it been narrowed down in length and gone for the real quality the album has, instead of nearly 2 hours it'd likely be a 4
I'm pretty sure I got overwhelmed. They got so many styles in this album. Moment by moment I was getting surprised. Soft rock, metal, folk, back to metal. Though I have to respect the variety.
Not bad but nothing stood out over the songs I already knew (Tonight Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979). Granted, songs that stand out usually do so on the second or later listens and I only listened once because this was two whole hours
damn, I had no idea that was a 2 hour double album. I used to hate the smashing pumpkins or at least I loved to make fun of Billy and his whiney voice. But as I've gotten older they've grown on me. IDK if it's just a nostalgia thing or my tastes have changed. But I do enjoy them. This album was WAY overly long and started to feel like a real chore but there are some great songs on here and it was a good listen
very long album. Ok.
28 tracks; some big radio hits; some heavy hard rock, but a surprising number of quiet, thoughtful songs.
Musically, I like it a lot. But I just really can’t stand Billy Corgan’s voice… it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me.
hate his voice i'm sorry to everybody out there, sounds like what a parmesan grater looks like. none of the songs are memorable to me. not my thing.
Has some pretty good songs, don’t like the vibe and lyrics too much
Troszkę przy długie, tkaie 90s prog-emo-rock Highlights: - Tonight, tonight - Zero
Listening to this record again straight through for the first time in years reaffirms 3 beliefs: 1. I love The Smashing Pumpkins (and particularly this record) 2. The Smashing Pumpkins had a brief window (both in time and geographically) in between two other defining forces in 90's rock- Nirvana and Oasis 3. I understand why this was both a crowning achievement and the beginning of the end of their well known work. This record is brilliant. But it's also too damn long. Upon listening to it the underlying tones of nostalgia, dissatisfaction, and identify crisis really struck a chord while at a current cross roads of getting older and going through some bad break ups. Take Me Down, Galapogos, and To Forgive stood out- I love that softer range of The Smashing Pumpkins. The heavier songs like Bullet With Butterfly Wings and An Ode to No One simply shred- and a banger is always welcomed in rock. But to me, that highlights why listening to this album straight through and actively listening rather than turning it into background sounds is such a challenge- the length paired with the juxtapositions. It doesn't flow as well as I so desperately wish it could. Which in the end shows why the best songs from this album are the ones we already all know and love, and why they ARE the defining tunes of The Smashing Pumpkins. Tonight, Tonight and 1979 in the less than 9 minutes in totality of both songs do what the rest of the album doesn't- blends the soaring highs, the headbanging, the soft tones, the nostalgia, the miss your best friends from middle school and the band you no longer play with and the freedom and recklessness and awkward growing pains of youth into two ballads that both tonally and lyrically capture everything this album is, but without having to sit around for the full 2 hours to get there. 1979 has been on my "On Repeat" Spotify Playlist for 6 straight years, and I doubt it will go away anytime soon. I think that says it all.
Believe it or not I listened to this bitch twice in a day 😂 was originally gonna give it a 2, but upon my second listen I realized there really isn’t anything wrong with most of these songs sonically, but most of he songs just don’t interest me and leave me bored.I don’t mind some of the noisier songs like jellybelly, but some like love are a complete miss. Might be a hot take, but I also don’t care for the softer songs such as tonight tonight, I just don’t prefer the pumpkins in this style. Instead the songs I enjoyed the most were the ones that had a good balance of soft and noise such as 1979 and muzzle. This album has only like 4 songs in my rotation, and I never intend to revisit the whole thing after this. My rating would be a 2.5, but I’ll be nice and round it to a 3. Also Siamese Dream >>>>
This album was built on fuzz pedals and lyrics that were written by a 15 year old edgelord. I liked some songs on this album esepcially their softer hits such as 1979 and Tonight,Tonight, but mostly every other song sounded the same. By the time disc 1 was over, I was a exhausted listening to that weasel Billy Corgan scream over and over into the mic as if he was a thirteen year old throwing an angsty tantrum. I much rather prefer when Smashing Pumpkins mellows the listeners down and gives them really nice experiances like 1979 and tonight, tonight. I really like the feel of those two songs and no matter how many times I listen to them, they will always hit the same everytime. The starting two tracks really killed it with setting up a really cool vibe I just wish the next 4-5 tracks weren't fuzzathons. Overall decent album
I let out an sigh as soon as I saw this album, my condition did not improve much
I now feel a tiny bit closer to all the pre-Goth kids from middle school.
3. The music's alright, but its just way too fucking long. (Especially that 6 hour version that's the only one availible on spotify.)
the vast majority of double albums should be single albums.
Good in parts, but overlong
Was going to go 4 on the strength of the singles, but fuck me is there a lot of bloat. Guitars sound amazing and Chamberlain is an incredible drummer.
Some absolute bangers but a lot of "filler", I did listen to the delux version which might have been the wrong call.
Isn't this shit like 6 hours? (That's the deluxe version). ITS 2 HOURS ANYWAY!!! Had a novel wank listening to this album, was fun, came right as they reached the revelation that they were a rat in a cage. They're playing near me in the next month and it's really unfortunate that I couldn't get tickets, because these guys are mental (a good thing).
I fuck with this.
Very high highs and very low lows Also just too long
This album is very interesting. If you want diverse song type content this is it. It’s 90s rock but with some soft and some hard songs. Personally I think 2 hours is way too long for a album. I liked some songs but couldn’t stand others. I think I would have liked it a lot more if it wasn’t a bit of heavy metal. 90s rock has never sounded great on my ears. I read that they wanted to make their own version of the wall. It definitely does not match the wall but I can see how they tried with all the diversity. I heard this is considered one of the best albums of the 90s and I think that’s proof that the 90s music fell short to other decades. The lyrics in this album are teenage angst not something I cared for. And the album lacks a strong story that the wall had.
Didn't really know what to expect having heard only the hits. I think they should have selected a handful of the best songs rather than overload the album. I found their quieter songs to be the better ones, while the "heavy" ones didn't work for me from this band .
I don't know... certainly not bad by any means, but it does not really work for me.
It was good and some of the songs I remember from the 90’s but I felt like something was missing.
Mukavaa rallattelua
The current track listing on Spotify is 92 songs. Almost infinite! Billy can dial in some of my favourite guitar sounds. I love the big muff overdrive so much. This album just doesn't use that enough though.
I’m cataloguing this under “great music tarnished by annoying vocals” I will return to this one someday to give it another chance. I thought the music was great, good performance by the band, plenty of well written stuff, but the vocals bugged me often
Tonight, Tonight was a great song, the album is huge tho so I didn’t listen to all of it
Some bangers, but also a bit too long and bloated. Cello tinged crescendos are rather majestic though. 🎃🎃🎃
Song I already knew: 1969 Favorite song: 1979 By starlight We only come out at night 3/5
Ég fíla þetta í smáskömmtum. Heil, tvöföld plata er helst til mikið í einu rennsli fyrir mig.
