i know this one well. I've always been fascinated by how this album combines heavy songs with light relief. Sometimes it feels like an endurance test to get to the respite... but maybe that's the point. First record starts super strong with no misses. Tonight Tonight is one of my favourite ever songs. The second half is a slog, with some bright moments. An unquestionable 5 for the first disc, and a 3 for the second. I would call it a 4/4.5 with some of my favourite ever songs on here as well.
Yeahhhh this is a fantastic album. I understand if Billy Corgan's vocals are not for you, but the guitar riffs, the passion in the vocals, etc etc are so so good. I will say...this is a longgggg album (over 2 hours) and there were definitely some filler songs that could have been cut, but all things considered, it's a great album. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the last 5 songs (although Farewall And Goodnight wasn't too bad) but Disc 1 (as referenced on Spotify) was near perfect. Actual rating is a 4.5. Liked Songs: Too many to name: "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" , "Tonight, Tonight" , and "1979" are all CLASSICS. The first 6-ish songs are all perfect
I only have to look at this album cover for "We Only Come Out at Night" to become stuck in my head, and I feel like I should deduct a star for that. It's an ear worm that gets very annoying very quickly. "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" was one of my first favorite songs as a kid, so there's a certain level of nostalgia that comes with the Smashing Pumpkins (before Billy ruined it with his turn toward the insane). That said, I'm more of a singles fan than a huge Smashing Pumpkins buff. I've listened to the first three albums (but really more as an adult) and enjoy them, but the only SP album I own is the Rotten Apples greatest hits compilation. Embarrassingly, I did buy the Zwan album when it came out. This album is good, but like most double albums, it's just way too long for me. It has some classic SP songs, like the aforementioned "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Tonight, Tonight," "1979," and "Zero." But by the time it gets to the second volume I've started to tune out. I respect the ambition of the project, but two hours is an insane amount of time to devote to one listening session, especially when not every song is a masterpiece. And I'm one of the rare people who doesn't hate Billy Corgan's voice (though I will never understand what he's singing on "1979" without looking at the lyrics in front of me). It's also not just because it's the "darker" half of the album — some of my favorite SP songs are the darker, heavier ones. I just feel like a lot of the second volume is filler. This album is certainly historically important, and "Tonight, Tonight" will always be one of the most impressive music videos ever made. But it's not an album I'll sit down and casually listen to very often, if at all. 3.5/5 (I'll round to a 4 since I can't do half stars).
While I am not the biggest fan of Billy Corgan, this sounds awesome. Especially the more tender tunes are beautiful.
There is a lovely balance between the softer and harder songs, some very big hits on this album, Corgan's vocals are so unique. The main issue is the length of the album. 28 songs and 2hrs long. I feel it would have been a much better record of it was shorter.
What a fantastic set of rock songs, perfectly crafted, perfectly curated. If only the vocals didn't smear a sharpie all over it. I hate that whiney voice. 3.5/5
Disc 1. I'm enjoying this a lot, although the vocals are throwing me off slightly on first listen. 4/5 Disc 2. I got used to the vocals but the second half didn't hold my interest as well as the first. 3.5/5 All together 4/5
The slower songs were highlights, as the heavier metal ones are just not my style. I think a lot of really good material on here though, and doesn't really feel bloated like many double albums tend to. 7/10
It's one of those albums where any attempt at criticism will be met by serious alt-music enthusiasts tutting like crazy. But, it shouldn't be above critical appraisal. Yes, it's a serious artistic work, but ... it needs some pruning, and some of the lyrics are a tad high-school-ish. Musically, and production-wise...no complaints, but.... not the unmitigated genius that many blindly call it.
So, the Pumpkins are from my time period in the genre that I primarily listened to at the time. But past Siamese Dream, which is a masterpiece, I've never really been able to get into them. I don't think I've ever listened to this album all the way through - I've only heard the radio songs - so this will be interesting. It's simultaneously very good, and also I didn't really connect to it. But you really can't argue with an album that has Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, and Thirty-Three. As previously mentioned, this was my era, so I can appreciate how different this album was than the normal fare while also staying (mostly) true to itself. So I'll give the fact that it's a double album a little leeway, because 2 hours of Smashing Pumpkins is too goddamned long. This is one of those albums again, where I really wish I had half stars to play with. The album is so much better than many albums I've rated three stars, but nowhere near as good as most of the albums I've rated 4 stars. I guess I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. That said, I'm going to lean into recency bias a bit. I gave Dinosaur Jr. three stars yesterday and this album is light years better than that, so 4 stars it is.
It’s aptly named and is quite the rock/punk journey. Somehow Billy corgan made an album that’s simultaneously very good, but also I didn't connect with a lot of it. Right after tonight tonight you’re throwing into a mosh pit with jelly belly and it sounds like something from the pixies or Elliot smith lol. But you really can't argue with an album that has Tonight, Tonight, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, and Thirty-Three. I like it, don’t love it and it’s nowhere near a 5 but here I am writing a lot about it so I must have thoughts. It’s more like a 3.5-4 for me. Billy’s voice just starts irritating me after awhile…. As a piece of a art it’s impressive nonetheless
Listened to this again after not having heard it for some time. My personal preference was always for Siamese Dream, but on this resistenc I found myself more impressed with the consistency of good quality songs across both discs. Overall I was impressed with this album upon revisiting it after all these years.
:3
Sometimes less is more. Just a hair too many 'just okay' songs to make this a 5, but still wonderful. 4/5
Has some of the Pumpkins’ greats, like 1979, Zero and Buller with Butterfly Wings, but is overly long. 3.5-3.75, I’ll be generous and round up.
i liked it, didnt finish it tho
Great album. Loved quite a few songs. Would love to add to my collection
Stark fyra.
Always prefer Gish but this was a very good album 1979 being a stand out track :)
I like Smashing Pumpkins, and I liked this, although as has been noted the length of this as a double album did leave me feeling a little fatigued by the end of it
Probably a bit too long but the good tracks are belters
It's good - really good at points - but it's just far too long and there's a lot of nothing in there
Da world is a vampire
Angsty music from the 90s. I'm never going to say no to that. Even though the album superficially sounds like it is not all connected, going straight through until the end, everything sounded like it all fit together. A testament to the song writing I guess.
Gostei demais desse! Para mim, parece que o álbum passa por vários estágios da tristeza, com faixas que variam entre muito intensas e muito calmas. Amei o fato que a segunda faixa do álbum parece muito uma música de the killers. Destaques: "Tonight, Tonight"; "Here is now why", "Muzzle", "Bodies" e "1979"
I think it’s best if I handpick the best tracks on this one as it was good but I prefer Siamese Dream… There’s obvious picks such as tonight tonight, bullet with butterfly wings, 1979 and zero. Also I loved love, I know it’s not necessarily a fan favourite but it reminded me a bit of stabilisers for big boys by panchiko, just not as good. Bodies stuck out to me as great through all of my listens. Through the eyes of ruby is a great little epic, being so late in the album it didn’t hit the first time I heard it but still it’s great. X.Y.U. Drags a tad more out of the two lover songs but it’s still great . And by starlight is a very fitting climax to the album. The rest is fine perhaps controversially Galapagos and thirty three didn’t stand out too much even though they’re meant to be fan favourites I swear. I honestly need to hear it more but I’d say 4/5
An excellent album that's way, way too long.
This is #day88 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... I've always found Billy Corgan's tendency to create sprawling albums like "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" fascinatingly bewildering. While I can appreciate its monumental scope and how it reflects the '90s alternative rock scene, I'm highly unlikely to listen to the entire album again due to its unjustified length. I mean, the whole thing is 28 tracks long, droning on for a little more than 2 hours... But then again, I think the point here is that you must hear this album before you die... So, kind of at least once? At the same time, however, the consistency and story are undeniable. Standouts are "Tonight, Tonight", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Galapogos", "1979", and maybe a few more. Overall, let it be a 4 out of 5 from me. Looking forward to #day89.
When a band releases a double album only three albums into their career, you know they have lots to say. Mellon Collie...allows the band to explore and expand their range of styles and song ideas on a big scale, that single LP's don't have the space to allow. Though I wouldn't call myself a Smashing Pumpkin's fan, I would consider this album their epic masterpiece (if you had to pick one) and best showcases Billy Corgan and the band's skills with a mix of songs, some beautiful, but also some less interesting. As with most double albums, there is filler and could have been edited down the song count for a more cohesive and impactful record. This is the first Pumpkin's album I've actually completely listened to and have to admit it was for the most part enjoyable, but after a while I almost forgot who I was listening to. Good, but too long.
This is an incredible accomplishment from The Smashing Pumpkins with them creating one of the greatest double albums of all time.
Yeah, I like this. Tonight, Tonight has always been a favourite, and Bullet with Butterfly Wings kicks ass.
Another nostalgia trip here. I loved this double album in my teenage angst years. I feel like some songs are definitely dated but their hits hold up. Some weird lyrics looking back...
There's a 5-star album in here somewhere, but it really suffers from bloat. The first disc is really good, but outside of the hits, the second one is mostly forgettable. 4 stars.
Lotsa banging toons
Lovely in some places, interesting and engaging in places, a bit too much Billy Corgan in others. I enjoy the instrumentals very much but I find his voice a little too whiny and OTT at times and it ruins things a bit. Also 2 hours of smashing pumpkins is a bit too much smashing pumpkins for me. Overall I like this album, in small doses; the whole thing is too long.
Iconic album. I grew up in the 90s with a lot of alternative rock radio, and the singles from this are really evocative of those years for me. Sometimes I forget how much mid-90s MTV I watched. I'm unsure if I've ever listened to the full album before now - I know I didn't own it but I think a sibling might have. I went in optimistic. The singles hold up. But, the double album thing is genuinely frustrating. It's lucky this one came up on a Friday and I got a few days to get through it a few times. It starts with a bland, pointless instrumental - like it's giving me time to get to my seat and get settled ("Tonight, Tonight" even seems geared to work as an album opener so I don't know why it doesn't just start there). By the end of track 6 it's already hit most its truly great songs. Then the album just slogs on, and on, and on for little benefit. There are at most a couple tracks in the back hour and a half that rank better than okay (I like "1979"). So much of it sounds so similar. I think my tastes are becoming clearer to me, that I would much rather have a half-hour album that I can digest than a long journey with so much material that it still feels only vaguely familiar on a second or third listen. I went in thinking this might be a 5-star album. Maybe there is one here - just one that's sharing disc space with a pair of 2- or 3-star albums. I'm going to give it a 4 on the strength of the best parts, but in the middle of the black night of disc two I did feel tempted to go lower.
A rarity in that the double feels entirely earned. Its got an aesthetic. Chamberlain is truly a great drummer. The adolescence of it all is intentional, and works well with that voice, which in other contexts gets pretty annoying, but works here, and we can see why Iha's not the singer. Some more D'arcy backing vocals would have been cool, but really the production is rock solid and everything across a very broad variety of styles sounds pretty amazing. All the songs have reason to exist, a trait lacking in most albums, even most albums on this list.
Is this grunge? Probably and probably the Smashers best album.
I like the hits and the slow ones but not sure I get the heavy stuff.
Excellent album, but the second half drags on a bit IMO.
Good fall album. Don’t think I’ve ever sat down and listened to it all the way through and I enjoyed it more than I expected.
It's a good album. The variety of styles/genres is honestly really incredible, especially since there isn't really a quality drop off, when they move away from a more comfortable rock sound. There are some real gems mixed throughout the album, too! Musically, his voice is pretty rough to listen to at times. When it gets really whiny/nasally, it's really hard to listen to and can ruin a few moments. The album is also just too long. There are albums that can justify a runtime 2 hours or more, usually albums with a longer story to tell. This is not one of those albums. There's no reason that this couldn't have been broken up into 2 albums. Favorite Song(s): Tonight, Tonight, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Take Me Down, 1979
3.5 stars, it’s a little long though
Beautiful, melodramatic, nostalgic, long. Everything.
Cool rock album, very interesting melodies and sounds. I couldn't finish it yet but I look forward to hearing the next songs!
I love the Smashing Pumpkins, and most songs on here are good to great, but A: the guitar tone (and general production) feels like a drop-off from "Siamese Dream" and B: listening to 2 straight hours of Billy Corgan is kind of alot. If this set was edited down to two 45 minute LPS instead of one 2 hour double album, they'd both probably be 10/10. I'm giving this a 4 because 3 stars seems too low, but really this is like a 3.75
If they would have edited this down to a single disc, it's a 5. I appreciate them going for it on a double disc, 2 hour endeavor is too much. I found a lot of great songs outside of the radio hits I knew.
I listened to this one before and I was a bit overwhelmed. Really enjoyed it this time round
I wish I could give this 3.5. Parts of it I enjoyed. Parts of I did not enjoy. We'll call this a soft 4.
Teenage angst at it best
Classic from my teenage years
A classic of my youth. Billy Corgan showing his breadth beyond grunge/alternative but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that a young me would end up skipping quite a few tracks back in the day. Still a cohesive album that takes you on a journey but imagine how tight this would be as a single album.
Despite all my rage, I still just in love with album. It’s not perfect, some tracks seem redundant. But the nostalgia is strong and some songs just well with emotions and continue to have impact on the music world.
Awareness of the Fall dates back to early 90’s listening to them on John Peel’s radio show on BBC international on my shortwave, but never explored further. Enjoyed this right away, and will be happy to dig further. Smith’s thing I am sure annoys some, but I was fine with it and the band was grooving.
The overly scuzzy filter on a lot of songs makes this kind of an unpleasant listen on headphones but still good overall.
I have a copy of this one. It ebbs and flows, and some of the songs are great the rest are okay at best. Its pretty uneven to be honest. But it is the second best Pumpkins record and their last listenable one IMO.
It's a modern classic that helped define post-grunge and late-90s alternative is very much indebted to it. There's always a temptation to take a double album that has flaws and proclaim that 'if you cut out x and y, it's a perfect album' but that always feels like an insult to fans and artists alike. There's a reason and a place for all of this and it's a journey, albeit a long one, that deserves to be travelled in full. That said, this journey does sag in the second half and takes itself out of contention for a fifth star, from me. Is that fair, when it easily has ten or more tracks of 5-star quality? Well, if I'm going to appreciate the full journey for the journey's sake, then I can judge this journey to be a little too long and a little bit self-indulgent. The run on side one of cassette one (yes, this was an old Walkman favourite of mine) is absolutely ludicrous though. 1. Mellon Collie... 2. Tonight, Tonight 3. Jelly Belly 4. Zero 5. Here Is No Why 6. Bullet with Butterfly Wings
The first disk is just immaculate. The second is just so much. Thats the problem with these double albums they just work you.
Great double album with good amount of variety Also manages to be impressively pretty consistent despite feeling a bit long by the end
After Prince's 70 min album yesterday, I was hoping for something shorter. Two hours later… Overall I very much enjoyed the medley of this double feature. I think I liked their non-metal songs a bit more, but the vibes were immaculate for the album. I have a slight preference for Disk One, but there's still a few from disk two I enjoyed. The final song from disk one, Take Me Down, was like the perfect end song. It felt like the song that plays over the credits of the final episode of an anime where two friends look back at their journey. Farewell and Goodbye, the end song of disk two, also was a great ending, but didn't evoke the same sense of reminiscing as Take Me Down. Albums with a wide selection of musical styles are the best, as I get to sample a little bit of everything, which is why I started this in the first place. Favs: Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Thru The Eyes Of Ruby, Here Is No Why, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Beautiful
Something for everybody! From prog to space to alterna to metal to softrock and back again. At over two hours and twenty-eight tracks, not every moment can be compelling, but it’s still chock full of melty goodness.
repeat listen, i like how many genres they cover in one album
A whole lotta pumpkins!
Good but daf
Despite all the rage - pretty grungy.
So many awesome classics here, such creativity and diversity. For me it's all a bit much, though, and two hours of this tend to get long. Could have been a perfect single album, this way it is still great.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the third album from the Smashing Pumpkins, and a 2 CD. 28 song release. The album includes a number of the band's hits, including "Tonight, Tonight," "1979," "Zero," and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings." The Smashing Pumpkins make distorted-guitar centered alt-rock that trends toward metal. Lead singer Billy Corgan's snarl is appropriate for his angst-ridden lyrics. The result is a sound that defined alt-rock of the 90s and made the Smashing Pumpkins one of the biggest bands of the era.
LONG
Tooooooooooo long Galapogos is great The slower more melodic stuff is the best stuff but it's good, great even Go for a FOUR
added a few songs to my playlist. Still way too long but I liked this one better than the other albums I've been given so far.
Very cool album. I think I actually prefer it to Siamese Dream. To be such a massive double album, there's really no duds in the track list. It's like a strong 8 compared to Siamese Dreams strong 7/light 8.
Albumi #34, 31.08.2024 Smashing Pumpkinsin mainio tuplalevy vuodelta 1995. Taisin olla armeijassa, kun levy ilmestyi, joten jäi alussa tosi vähälle kuuntelulle. Monta todella loistavaa kappaletta.
If there’s an album that truly captures the spirit of the mid-90s, this one is definitely at the top of the list. So much of the music from that era has worn out its welcome for me—I’d happily keep most of it buried. But The Smashing Pumpkins are the exception. Though they’re a quintessential 90s alternative band, they pulled in elements from nearly every facet of the culture back then. They had the grunge edge, hints of shoegaze and dream pop, a dark style that wasn’t quite goth, and even experimented with electronic music that was just beginning to make waves. This album is likely their most diverse, blending all of those elements into a single, cohesive work.
In the grand scheme of 90s rock, The Smashing Pumpkins are a band that admittedly I don’t listen to that often. I actually really enjoy their music too. At least when I really take the time to appreciate it. I’m glad I got the chance to talk about Siamese Dream first. It’s important to understand what the band went through during the recording process of that record and where it left them when the time came to start on this project. Thankfully the sessions here seem to have been a much more calm and balanced work effort. And I think that lack of tension is really felt. Something about the energy of this feels like a band just taking everything they are capable of and putting it all out there. But it’s also a lesson on why you don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Because most Pumpkins fans will admit, this was basically it for the band. The members will admit that themselves. It was posed as a supposed “final album”. Creatively, they had reached the end. And so, they decided to create a gargantuan double album that puts the solid length of its predecessor to fucking shame. They swung for the fences and exhausted any and all ideas they had left. Which would unfortunately lead the rest of their albums from then on to feel stagnant. But what is here is nothing to scoff out. It’s very impressive, actually. To find a 2+ hour long album that I am not exhausted by is rare. But I will make the argument that this record contains more of the band’s most iconic work than Siamese Dream does. Almost the entire first disc, titled Dawn to Dusk, is fantastic, with very few low points. The second disc does also have some really solid material, like the beautiful 1979, but it also falls short in many places. You can almost see the progression of them loosing steam as this album goes along. It also feels like a remarkably better balanced album than the one before it. The softer, dream pop inspired bits of Siamese Dream weren’t anything to write home about, but they are turned up to 11 here. As a result, we get gems like Take Me Down, Cupid de Locke, and Tonight, Tonight. Additionally this contains some of the sludgiest, most crushing songs they’ve ever written. Zero, Jellybelly, Where Boys Fear to Tread, Bodies, and especially X.Y.U. prove just how brutal this band can be at its heaviest. Tales of a Scorched Earth would be amazing if the mixing wasn’t horrible. In many ways, this feels like a swan song of the best, and worst, parts of the band. Obviously, there was no death or retirement that followed this. But on a particular day, I’d be willing to say that this is better than Siamese Dream as a whole. Rating: 8/10
A lot that I love and a lot that I don’t. A 5-star single album spread too thin over 2 CDs.
Favorite Track: 1979 Would have been a 5 with less filler.
Great album - one that has past me by since it first came out. Good to revisit it.
Big album that never felt like it was too long. Another that is nostalgia-laden for sure, but no denying the artistry here.
Classic old school rock with good breakdowns and solid drums
Great album start to finish.
Really enjoyed listening to this band again - I had forgotten how much I like them. Galapogos is such a great track: perfect vocals, lyrics and mood. As is 1979. And To Forgive. Stumbleine (very Elliott Smith). Actually, a lot of this is very good indeed. And surely one of the best album titles ever! I think the album is too long, so one star lost. But I really enjoyed rediscovering this band, and will definitely be listening again.
My wonderful wife bought this on CD as a gift many years ago. Listening again takes me back and I feel the same about it now as I did then. Around a dozen tracks are wonderful and if they were the album it would be up there with Automatic For The People, Doolittle and Nerrmibd as my favourite from American bands of that era. The only issue is the heavier tracks don't really do anything for me. That said the opening instrumental, 'Tonight Tonight', 'In The Arms of Sleep', '1979', 'Cupid De Locke', 'Galapogus', 'Stumbleine' and the last 5 tracks are magnificent! There you go, a perfect 12 track album among the 28 :)
What a rich and soothing sound this album has in places! I once read that The Smashing Pumpkins capture nostalgia through instrumentals like no one else, and that is definitely true with songs like 1979. My favourite on this album was actually a track that I am unfamiliar with - Galapagos. What an amazing tune!! A little oversized, hence the 4, but a great listen which put some songs in my rotation.
This was great. Quite a long album but I put it in the background when I was gaming with the boys after a busy day (attempting the Der Eisendrache EE on BO3 Zombies) and it made for a fitting soundtrack. I already knew a few of the bigger singles but the tracks in between were good too. Favourite track: 1979
Bit long but, hey...
the chorus of by starlight sounds like he's saying "dat ass"
Das Großwerk der Pumpkins.
I LITERALLY JUST LISTENED TO THIS ALBUM. I decided to start what I call the "Mega Album Mini Project" where I listen to every album on the list that's over 2 hours throughout the end of Summer so I don't have to listen to them after a long day of school or something. I started with this one because it's the shortest of the collection. I LITERALLY LISTENED TO THIS OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS. Of course, I'm not going to listen to it again, even though it's a good album. So here's the review that I wrote yesterday (as of when this review is being uploaded). Wow. That was something. This is a great album right here. I'll start by addressing something very important right off the bat. This album is very long. There's a reason why I listened to this and 2+ hour albums when I had the free time in the summer instead of just waiting for the generator to give them to me. However, the 2 hours of runtime are not wasted in Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. There's a good variety in this album. Some songs are heavier and more aggressive, while others are more ballad-like than anything. These two styles come together to form a complex album with complex themes that get explored quite well. The sound, regardless of if it's heavy or light, is pretty good. The instruments sound cool. The vocals on the other hand are something to get used to. Billy Corgan's vocals are certainly interesting. They're the kind of thing that needs to grow on you as you listen. Fortunately, I'd say they kind of grew on me. Not fully, but enough to say that I can defend his singing. It fits the themes of the album. The writing is great. There isn't a clear story here, but you can catch glimpses of general themes like relationships and adolescence. Overall, while this is certainly a daunting listen, I'd say it's worth it for any alt-rock fan. I never knew the Smashing Pumpkins were this good. High 4/5.
This was great. So much Pumpkins flavor, really enjoyed it. A lot of variety in the style and feel of the tracks, but then again, there are 28 of them, so it would be incredibly boring if they were all the same. Long album, but worth it. Four stars.

• i love many of the songs from this album, but i have never bothered to listen to the album in full • don't understand how they can be so versatile. one beautiful, mellow song can seamlessly transition to an upbeat rock song • listening from like 6am so this is a peaceful experience • i definitely appreciate the remastering as a headphones user • some of the songs are forgettable and sound the same to me (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) • wanna rate it like a 3.7 but ill round up to a 4
Long album, so I can't say every song stood out all that much to me, but I definitely liked this.
The Smashing Pumkins deliver a lot here. However, I'm ambivalent as to whether it really had to be 2 hours on two double CDs. The “album” contains pretty much all the band's the hits, is stylistically varied, and yet remains thematically true to itself. It is probably their magnum opus. Nevertheless, the singer's voice has the inverse effect of getting used to something (it gets weirder over time) and the melancholic style becomes boring after a while, which means that large parts of the album were just background noise for me.
Really great!
Smashing Pumpkins deserve more praise, they’re fantastic. Diverse and expressive.
Some really iconic writing, but then 2/3s feels like B side filler.
didn't realise how much of this album i already knew, it's a nice mix of sounds
este disco es todo un ride, pero muy enjoyable. billy kills it, y musicalmente es muy variado. clasicazo
Why are so many albums on this list OVER TWO HOURS long????
I find Billy Corgan's voice a bit grating but a lot of these songs really slap.
I liked this album a lot. I do think it was quite long and could have done better in my review if it were cut down more to the essential songs.
Somehow I didn't know this was a double album. Lots of bangers, still too long.
Classic
The most annoying voice on the planet but somehow it still works
I had forgotten how good this was.
I'm glad I finally listened to one of their albums, because you like them.
listened to again bumped 1/2 star, actually pretty great tho it's all over
Hadn't really listened to a full album from TSP, but enjoyed this one. There are some really great tracks and high-energy songs. I'll definitely return to their music more down the road.
Tough, raw and catchy. Great album!
so good i love you 90s rock
There are a few songs I love on this album (Zero, Thirty-three, Bullet with butterfly wings, 1979 and Tonight tonight) - but most of the rest I could skip! The album is bloated and pretty insufferable at times (not unlike Billy Corgan) - but I'm still giving it a 4 because there's enough good stuff going on here that'll come back for - I have a soft spot for alternative rock of the mid 90s so there's a least 1 nostalgia point here! Wanna go for a ride?
Well the sadness definitely feels infinite. This album is tooooooooooooo long. Some people may disagree, but while there are some all time great songs here, there is also at least 30 minutes of absolute filler. Best Songs: Tonight Tonight, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Farewell And Goodnight Worst Songs: Where Boys Fear To Tread, Bodies, Tales Of A Scorched Earth
Fin dai primi minuti ho sentito qualcosa “cliccare” in me.
Not their best album but good and couple all time great songs
some stinkers but far more bangers
I really enjoyed the album. It was heavier than I expected and had a great vibe all the way through. What I didn’t expect was how long it was - 28 songs, 2 hours. It’s full of great content, but it is a bit too long.
do not have
Solid
I’m really enjoying this, the famous songs (tonight, zero, bullet…) really stand out but with every double album there is too much stuff on there thst could just be cut and left for later.
Beautiful and heavy. Really excellent.
I’m seeing the Pumpkins this week so this was timely. A perennial favourite, my most beloved double album, it’s bloated sure but it’s also opulent.
One of the most important records of my life. I had never experienced a double length record unless you count Use Your Illusion, and i thought it was the absolute peak of artistry. Sadly it also pretty much marked the death of the pumpkins and so much of the hope of the 90s with it. But none of that impacts my score of 4 on the empirical scale of awesome musicness.
So much nostalgia here. I remember seeing the music video for Tonight Tonight, done in the trip to the moon fashion, and being blown away. It was nice to give this a full listen because for years I have cherry picked the hits from it. And there are alot of hits.
A classic.
An audacious double album full of emotion and a variety of rock sounds. My enjoyment is probably bolstered by not being personally bothered by Billy Corgan's voice. I love that it opens with an instrumental and a stadium rock tune, then nosedives into something heavy. Highlights: Tonight Tonight, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, To Forgive, An Ode To No One, Cupid De Locke (chamber pop!), Galapogos, Take Me Down, 1979, Tales Of A Scorched Earth, Stumbleine, Lily (My One And Only)
It’s been a thousand years since I’ve listened to this. But it’s all coming back. This was huge at the time. Yeah, I don’t even need to finish it to know it’s at least 4/5.
Rating: 8.5/10 Great album overall, some of the band's best material is on here. I admire how ambitious this album is, around two hours long with diverse songwriting and different sounds/styles. The songwriting is mostly fantastic, because of its long length some songs are a bit underwhelming or feel redundant. This album is very cathartic, Billy Corgan sings and plays with so much emotion in every song. Most of the highlights are on the first half, this album could have been a five-star album if it was only one disc. Favorite songs: Mellon Collie, Tonight Tonight, Zero, Here Is No Why, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, To Forgive, An Ode To No One, Cupid De Locke, Where Boys Fear To Tread, Thirty-Three, 1979, X.Y.U., We Only Come Out At Night, Beautiful, Farewell And Goodnight. Worst songs: Love, Take Me Down, Tales Of A Scorched Earth.
never got into this because of the length (2 hours??); this has the length of two albums combined. side a has a very strong lineup, but side b is a little shakier, but intimate. anyway im glad i got to listen to this album cause its beautiful. the production unfortunately isnt the best which really is a shame, but i can still feel the emotions poured into a lot of the songs. first time listening to tonight, tonight got me tearing up. 4 personal favs: tonight, tonight 🤯 here is no why, galapogos, 1979, by starlight
Gevarieerd album
Two things prevent me from giving this (in)famous early-nineties "alternative rock" record a 5-star grade. First there's the issue of its guitar sound and overall production values, which sound paper-thin at times--at least if you manage to hear through the avowed grand pretensions of the multiple arrangements and layerings. Maybe recording so many songs for those sessions (far more than the high number of cuts that ended up in the final album) happened to the detriment of giving the production and sound dynamics of this thing a real flair. Hard to say whose fault this is. Billy Corgan's? Alan Moulder's? Flood's? And of course, there's the issue of the "double-CD" length, with a second volume plagued with too many fillers (half of the tracks by my count)--secondary cuts that would have made interesting b-sides, but that were never the stuff of proper album material. And this time, Corgan's notoriously overblown ego is clearly at fault here. Make no mistake, "double-albums" are *always* topsy-turvy affairs, this goes with the (large) territory here. Yet too many songs in here are way too self-indulgent to allow me to give this thing full marks. Yet as uneven the whole shebang is, and as obnoxious as Corgan is today (and already *was* at the time, let's face it), *Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness* is still an *iconic* album (and its "haters" certainly helped build its reputation, very ironically). Which is the reason why I will include the record in my own list. With its immediately memorable and singable alt bangers, insane metal-inspired scorchers, heartfelt and touching ballads, along with its more long-winded-yet-ultimately-epic tracks, this album has a bit of everything for everyone, which is where its length comes handy, in spite of the shortcomings the latter also brings. Corgan's vocals and lyrics are obviously an acquired taste, but oddly enough, the whiny, juvenile and somewhat forced tones of what the Smashing Pumpkins frontman and songwriter does have never rubbed me the wrong way. Once again, this goes with the territory here, just as Ozzy Osbourne's antics go with the one of Black Sabbath. I have always banged my head over the chorus of "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. But deep inside, that does not prevent from genuinely enjoying the song. Call that a "guilty pleasure"--the sort of pleasure I can feel for 70% of the record. "Zero" 'and "Jellybelly"'s heavy guitar riffs, "Tonight, Tonight"'s string extravaganza, "Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans"'s prog-rock regalia and "1979"'s chorus immediately come to mind here. But honestly, I could feel the same thing for a lot of other songs taken from the album. About the latter's interminable length, and just for the sake of a quick experiment, I've imagined what a "redux" version of it would look like. Its duration could fit in a *sole CD*, and I have an inkling such a shorter tracklist would give you a tighter listening experience while still managing to convey the band's multifaceted essence. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Yet it was a really a no-brainer picking the best songs. Maybe some of you can more or less agree with me on this selection. Push the "like" button if you do. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Tonight, Tonight Jellybelly Zero Here Is No Why Bullet With Butterfly Wings To Forgive Fuck You (An Ode To No One) Muzzle Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans Where Boys Fear To Tread Bodies Thirty-Three (or alternatively, In The Arms Of Sleep) 1979 Tales of a Scorched Earth Love X.Y.U. Thru The Eyes Of Ruby (maybe in an edited version - and, if possible, segueing into an extract of the original album's closer, Farewell And Goodnight) 4/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential records". 9/10 for more general purposes (5+4). Number of albums left to review: 174 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 360 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 206 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 262
1979 is primo. Seems like a lot of the songs are pretty similar and fall into a couple camps even tho those camps are different. This could be shorted and be a 5 probably, but I’d say it’s a 4
Long album. Only so much of that voice I can take. Quite a few good songs though. 3.75
fond memories of listening to this in the car a year ago n going insane lol
Smashing pumpkins do this sound better than anyone else - makes me want to pick up a guitar and start learning it all
The Smashing Pumpkins are great!
3.6 Lots of classic burners, lots of double album filler. I had this album growing up and there are lots of songs I didn't know when going through this exercise. Thats got to speak to the skip-a-bility of some of the tracks.
I don’t get it. Why would u make an album so long. Disc 2 is an easy 5, disc 1 felt like so long ago I don’t even know, maybe like a 3. It’s hard to pay attention to what I like when there’s so much it kinda blends together. But like some of this was really good. 1979, SO GOOD. I liked a lot of the stuff that wasn’t super noise heavy. I really wish there was just an album that had the good songs from this. I guess that’s what playlists are for. makes me appreciate mixtapes. Would prolly melt if someone ever made me a mixtape. I’m ab to sleep so the last song being all good night is super cute. 8.5/10
Take Me Down was very nice. The rest was honestly pretty good but so long. It makes sense that it’s good because they had so many finished songs to choose from for the album. But they should have chosen a few fewer songs. 7.5/10
This album is really good. This album is also two hours long. His singing is still not the best. The energy on the heavier songs is there and the instrumentals are as good as they were on the last one. The length and singing hold this one back. Favorite songs were Tonight, Tonight, Jellybelly, Here Is No Why, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Galapagos, Bodies, 1979, and Thru The Eyes of Ruby.
It's really wild how many genres / musical styles are represented here -- the album is really long but worth it!
Love this band. Fan from the first album. This one though, has its ups and downs.
Like many double albums, I wish this were a single, 12- or 13-track playlist without all the repetition. But you can't debate its impact on the 90s. I wish the lyrics were a little stronger to keep up with the music.
Huge Pumpkins fan. I always wanted to live this album more than I do. It’s just too long. Some great songs that I will always go back to but it could have been cutdown to one album instead of a double album. Hoping for Siamese Dream soon. Gish also amazing.
Could have been a Single album but holds some iconic gems
Listened to this album most of High School and College. Great entry, finally more than 2 stars!
3.8 too longgggg, god but too longggg faves: beautiful, cupid de locke, mellon collie
I should have given Siamese Dream a higher rating. I only gave it a 3. It’s just that it was the first time I realized the Smashing Pumpkins are good, and now, a few months later, I know it for sure. This one, too, whips ass. A band that is built to be self-indulgent, and does it for two hours, and the whole thing is, at least, Good to Very Good. Sorry Caleb
For an album just over two hours long (yes I know it’s a double) this managed to maintain the quality and interest throughout. Looking forward to giving it another go.
A bit different sound than I expected. A few moments of experimentation and a couple of bangers. Not a huge fan of the vocals, but it is trademark Pumpkins, so I can give a pass. Would listen again. Low 4
I had this cd when it came out. I liked Siamese Dream better. If they would've kept this a single album with 10 to 12 tracks it would be considered one of the greatest albums ever. There's some really classic stuff on here, it's just too long.
Man, if only this had been a normal, single-disc release. It would have been such a legendary work. Just pick the best 12-15 songs and walk home with handfuls of cash from releasing a nearly perfect album. Instead, Corgan shoved every song he had into a bloated, 28-track slog of an album. It's still legitimately great, don't get me wrong. But it could have been perfect if they'd been willing to kill the weaker tracks. Not even BAD tracks because there aren't any. But there are definitely some that aren't as strong as the others and I just wish we could have had the 1-hour, face-melting, alt-rock beast that's hidden inside this ridiculous track listing. Anyway, it was still a good time and I can't give it less than 4 stars. But you can't get 5 stars unless you're willing to thin the herd and kill your darlings.
Great album!
Indeed as the review on Tidal says, this certainly is a challenging listen. My second time listening, and I really enjoy the remastered version. Listening first time I thought the album dragged at the end and sounded a bit flat. Still think it drags, but the remaster sounds better. Enjoyed the journey a lot more the second time around sonically. Hits get the album going and then the journey begins. Mostly hit - some miss. Don’t regret spending the 2 hours listening to it.
This album is so awesome. It feels never ending but in a good way!
An ambitious album that does a great job balancing lots of different sounds. The variety doesn’t make the 2 hr run time feel that long. Lots of bangers on this one
Oh, nice more Smashing Pumpkins! Have never done this album end to end, so looking forward to the journey. Lots of classic smashing pumpkins on this one. Not every song was amazing, but an overall enjoyable album. very diverse but within a sound. 4* Tonight tonight after the piano intro is a really cool ease into the album. Highlights: tonight tonight, 1979 (goes so hard, timeless), zero, bullet with butterfly wings
I grew up in the 90s and love rock music, I obviously know the Smashing Pumpkins but they never made it as high on my list as other grunge bands. In fact I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness from start to finish…. It’s possible no one ever has. It’s 2 fucking hours. C’mon man. But I gotta say, it’s really really good. Is Corgan’s voice objectively bad? Yes but he’s got a great scream and somehow for me the softer songs are often so beautiful it doesn’t matter. Tons of bangers on it as well. One of, if not the greatest double album ever. That’s being said, if it was a single, it would undoubtedly be 5 stars 8.4/10
I'm not their biggest fan, but this is an epic wide ranging album.
Masterpiece. 28 songs masterpiece.
Another high school graduation year classic that I have listened to so many times on a spinning disc. Hearing it again now for the first time in many years, I fully expected to write that it is too long because I have come to dislike bloat and prefer shorter songs. But somehow there really is not much filler in this gigantic undertaking. A collection a varied, perfectly executed alt-rock tunes elevated by a few timeless classics like 1979. The one sort-of negative I can find is that the album doesn't innovate, it just perfects the medium of the grunge era. I am one that believes Corgan's voice is part of what made the band interesting, but then again I'm a Neil Young fan so I guess I have a soft spot for unconventional singers. Some of the lyrics are pretty 90s angst/cringe, but that is a product of the time. Siamese Dream is an absolute 5-star album for me...this is 4.5.
Joy!! 🙂 4.9
I love the hits from this album and overall enjoyed the deeper cuts.
Good old double albums - at least when they are good this is a good thing.
Gran disco doble. Grunge con toques orquestales.
Tonight Tonight is one of the best songs of all time. The Pumpkins often miss the mark. But when they hit it, they really hit. Still, there's no need for the album to be this long.
Smashing Pumpkins are one of those bands that have received commercial and critical appeal, and yet I have never given them the time of day. Tonight, Tonight is a classic hit of theirs. Very pretty song. By comparison Jellybelly is a more "grungy" sounding song that feels like it was mixed into the form factor of a poker chip. Really wish it were opened up a bit more to let the guitar breath. Zero is one of my favorite of the Smashing Pumpkins songs that made it to the radio. I used to think the guitar riff was sick. I used to, and I still do too. Bullet With Butterfly Wings is a catchy goddamned song. I really do wish this mixing felt less compressed -- maybe that's all purposeful, but I can't shake the feeling that this would scream if unleashed. Love An Ode To No One. Wall of sound riff propelling endlessly forward with some controlled stop-start play in the middle. Galapagos is a really pretty song. Love the twinkling guitar, and while I always found his voice strange as a kid, I really appreciate its oddness here (and across the record for that matter). So very distinct and unconventional, but able to run the spectrum from rage-filled to tenderness. Jesus this is a long album. I thought it was an extended edition until I looked up the Wiki page. I'm not hating it, but my god this is a lot of music. X.Y.U. is a fucking dirty jam. I was loving the sludginess of it. Such an odd juxtaposition followed up by We Only Come Out at Night. Such a long album, but I enjoyed everything it contained to a greater or lesser degree. This only solidifies what I already knew: I ought to go down the Smashing Pumpkins rabbit hole. On the first half I think I was listening with too low of volume and losing too much in the condensed mix. Really nice album with a lot to like. This is a strong 4 for me.
Was never a huge fan of Tonight, Tonight as a stand alone song, but man that was pretty awesome song to kick it off following that short intro leading into it. This was a weird album with the changing back and forth between the heavy grungy songs and the slower songs. I never knew what was going to come next. I liked a lot of both types of songs, but disliked some of both as well. I have never really jived with the singers voice but the instrumentals are pretty sweet on this album. I wish they had one more really heavy song as one of the last few songs. But the piano outro was quite nice. This is a 4 because I couldn't possibly give this album a 3, but it is a quite low 4
Previously rated: Siamese Dream (3/5) ************************ This album was long, obviously, but pretty good. If I were a few years younger, I'm sure I would have big nostalgia for it. I do remember teenagers I worked with singing that they were a rat in a cage. One or two of the songs reminded me of Coheed and Cambria.
Way better than I remember. I'm more partial to the softer, album cuts than the over played mega hits. Still too long though, as all double albums are. If this was a tight ten or twelve songs, would be a five star.
I liked the first two songs. I cut the next two short because I didn't like the "noise".
This was the first cd I bought with my own money, along with the Soundgarden single Pretty Noose. Yes, there are to many tracks, Corgan overindulged in his own talent on this one, but still, the talent is doubtless. The variation sometimes makes the record less coherent, but on the other hand it kind of wakes you up as a listener. Even if its not the record that has aged best from this decade it still is a 90s classic.
Big ol' double feature project. Wide variety of sound. Songs like Jellybelly and Zero don't really do it for me. Bullet is fantastic. Tonight, Tonight is incredible. Cupid De Locke, love it. Porcelina so good. 1979 is my absolute favourite. I wish songs like that, Thirty-Three, Stumbleine were more prevalent on the album
Instand classic. A l little long. But I really like it.
favs - zero, bullet with butterfly wings (duh), an ode to no one, cupid de locke, where boys fear to tread, x.y.u 7.5/10
3.8 Good, very bloody long though...
The Smashing Pumpkins pra mim tem som de adolescência. Mas 2h de álbum é complicado. Mesmo assim a experiência foi boa, tive várias músicas que gostei mto. Bullet with butterfly wings Cupid de locke In the arms of sleep Tales of a scorched earth
I have not listened to this album before but I have listened to some Smashing Pumpkins songs. I wasn’t looking forward to listening since the album was so long but it helped that I enjoyed all the tracks to get through it. I recognized Bullet with butterfly wings. And some tracks that stood out to me were: Here is no why, and Thirty-three. I will listen again!
Despite the length of the album, this is really a classic. Somehow it does not feel like there are fillers and there a lot of really incredible tracks.
Tempted to drop this to a 3 due to the clutter from a half dozen or more songs that distract from the overall work. But there’s enough winners to hold the line.
Good sound, a lot of hits I recognized. But the length though. Two hours? Not for me.
Smashing Pumpkins was a big part of my childhood for sure. Songs like Disarm, Today, Tonight Tonight, 1979… honestly can’t be beat. Rocket was my favorite music video of the time. Total 90s Edward Scissorhands meets Radio Flyer vibes, maybe throw in a little Explorers/Flight of the Navigator. Anyway, musically the album is fairly varied, some songs heavier, some songs more brooding or melancholic, some more melodic and upbeat. There’s angst, drama, hope… music at its best should always be so dynamic. But being a double album it’s perhaps no surprise that some of the material isn’t as consistently engaging. Nonetheless it’s all still very solid and one of few albums I don’t really skip songs. While listening to To Forgive I thought of AFI’s This Time Imperfect, the final, “hidden” track from Sing the Sorrow. They have similar chord progressions and trajectory, although AFI’s song is a bit more emotionally hefty. Just an interesting thing to look into, and I found out Billy Corgan actually helped write a more recent AFI tune, Dulcería. The more you know, I guess. Speaking of which, I always loved the Tonight, Tonight video directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Ferris, in all its Méliès-homage glory. Did you know they directed Little Miss Sunshine? And married couple Tom Kenny and Jill Talley, who were in the video, met in 1992 while working together on a sketch comedy show called The Edge, for which Charlie Kaufman was one of the writers? They were also in Mr. Show, and voiced Spongebob and Karen in Spongebob Squarepants. And Tom Kenny also voiced Ice King. And I haven’t figured out how Kevin Bacon fits into all this yet. But now I want to watch The Edge.
Tonight, tonight is a freaking banger. Very 90s, I liked it. Can’t say that I’ll ever go back to listening to it much though.
Cool mix of styles, alt rock
Second time with the Smashing Pumpkins in only a couple months and I think a lot of the initial statements remain for this one. Billy Corgan’s voice is unique and the band will give you a bunch of different rock sounds. This album has two of the first songs that come to mind when I think about the Smashing Pumpkins with 1979 and Bullet With Butterfly Wings. The heavier metal usually isn’t for me but I feel like it works within the album and kept the energy up when cycling between metal, early punk/emo, and the softer rock. The biggest drawback to this album is that it’s two hours long. Yes, the music is good, but that length is excessive. I’d give this one a 3.5 if given the opportunity, and I’m gonna round up because of the iconic 90s alternative rock hits on this album.
I really enjoyed this album. It's more than just the album with 1979 on it. There's a good variation in songs and they work well together, but it did it really need to be 2 hours long? Obviously I love the big hits, but I really love the punk sound of XYU. There is a lot of variation in this album
Long album but a lot of good songs, 8/10
I've heard the album before but probably skipped over much of it. Was a fan of SP with Siamese Dream album which is the only album of theirs I have listened to in its entirety more than once. Some of my favorite SP songs of from this Mellon Collie album: Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Tonight, and 1979. Have heard them a thousand times and still get excited hearing them. On this album, things I love include the mix of hard rock instrumentation, great guitar, and drums, and emotion from Corgan, along with some fantastic lyrics. There is a lot of sadness, anger, vulnerability as well as obsession with sleep and dreaming. I saved a few songs that I hadn't appreciated before: Porcelina of the Vast Oceans, Bodies, By Starlight, and In the Arms of Sleep. Some tracks reminded me of The Beatles: Take Me Down and We Only Come Out at Night. I found some of Corgan's screaming to be over the top and too painful to listen to, making my vocal cords hurt for his. Although I might have replayed these as a teen, I don't need to hear them again: Tales of the Scorched Earth, XYU. It is a long album that I typically do not have the patience for and grow bored with. However, I would say it should be listened to at least once.
The hits are bangers but the album has a shit ton of filler tracks. They also don’t do thrash metal too well.
Tonight, tonight Ok Jelly belly Bra Zero Bra Bullet with butterfly wings Mycket bra An ode to no one Mycket bra Love Bra Galapagos Bra Muzzle Bra
Beautiful full Orchestra. 4/5
Two whole hours of Billy Corgan's rather annoying voice and yet i don't hate it entirely, interesting...
4. It's a 3, but gets an extra star for nostalgia
Long album, some absolute classics on here, but never actually listened to the whole thing. 1979, Zero, Bullet, Tonight hold the album up, but there's a little bit too much filler to be a 5.
Like the music and the compositions but the voice is starting to grate on me...maybe a double album is a bit too much.
Really good album. Very creative band.
Another album that I've listened to previously but didn't really stick in my mind, thought I wouldn't care for it and it's too damn long. Actually listening I don't recall a song I didn't like, which is quite impressive for a double album.
Really enjoyed this, didn't expect to! Some good riffs, Jellybelly being a track that stood out to me! As well as Zero (I think it was called?)
I would have given this a five if it weren't so damn long!
Lots of stuff I like and lots of others.
The intro instrumental track, also the title track, is peaceful and sets the tone light. Stretched, almost anguished vocals join heavy riffs as the production is powered by guitar with accompanying drums. Tracks tie “teen angst” to “teen hope” as the Pumpkins paint a picture of what is now and what is to come. 28 tracks spanning over 2 hours in length portray the passion of the craft that embellish the Pumpkins critically acclaimed rapport.
I bought this CD when it came out and I’m not sure i ever listened to every song. There are so many classic but in listening to it through all these years later i really enjoyed the creative variety. Even the songs i didn’t love, i appreciate. A gem.
duhhhhhhh
#137. Most people: the world is round Weirdos: the world is flat Billy Corgan: the world is a vampire 4/5: excellent
This is an awful lot of music. Which isn’t to say it’s awful. Lots of it is really cool, and genre-bending. But it’s just like… a lot.
Better listened to in segments as it's LONG. Billy's voice is annoying but there's a lot of great songs on this album and they're spaced nicely throughout the tracklist so if you do listen to all in one go, it's never boring.
Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness holds up incredibly well nearly 30(!) years later. It has a massive sound when it wants to be massive, it has a softer and more considered ballad side, it has a momentum about it in the first half, the drumming is excellent, it's very listenable and memorable overall. Negatives are that it's far far too long and that momentum from the first half is clearly lacking in the back half, and I've never really liked Corgan's vocals much, they grate quite considerably as we go along given the length of the album. I'll probably forgive that a bit, it's a high 3 or a low 4. Tonight, Tonight is such a fucking good track though I might just let it sit at a 4 because of that.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, well it certainly feels like it'll last forever. Double albums are usually a big ask, a couple of hours is hard to give to something you weren't planning on listening to and the link through on this went to the 92 song dep deluxe edition that runs for nearly 6 hours. FUCK. THAT. I hadn't really heard much outside of the monster singles this thing produced and I was somewhat pleasantly surprised at times, but it was mostly that nostalgic trip back to the mid-90s of my youth, and all I really came away with was that Billy Corgan is a madman when he's inspired, but that mad Billy Corgan could really use an editor.
Standouts- "Zero," "Tonight, Tonight," "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," "An Ode to No One," "Love," "Bodies," "In The Arms of Sleep," "1979," "Thru the Eyes of Ruby," "X.Y.U.," "We Only Come Out At Night," "Beautiful," "Farewell and Goodnight" Vocals/Lyrics- 5/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 4/5 This album is a weird one to rate. The slower songs are the ones that appeal to me the most, but on the other hand the harder songs are so full of rage and anger that I feel like it's really jarring, going from the soft "1979" to the angsty, rage-filled "Tales of a Scorched Earth" for example really messes with the flow. However, despite that I would consider this album to be a masterpiece. It's a long album, at 2hrs and 5 minutes. It's a great listen all in all. Definitely one of those albums where it may not be for everyone though, but if you're really into that grungey sound or that just rage-filled piss and vinegar type sound then this is for you.
4/5 double album, no bad songs Has some great iconic grunge songs, but gets a little boring at times. Bullet with butterfly wings, 1979, and X.Y.U are maybe some of the best grunge songs i've heard great album
Better than I remember. I have more appreciation for the band past the hits.
2hrs. Tons of bangers, like the other stuff too. Textbook 4
High school flashback album
Wow, I liked it, before Ive only heard Siamese Dream. Double album, lots of things, I will listen again.
It had a very epic scale to it and I quite enjoyed it. Quite long though.
4?
High - low - high energy Sick guitar Sounds fun to perform
I liked the album. It was rather long not going to lie
It blows my mind how a band can produce a 2 hour long album, and it be so versatile and dynamic throughout. A brilliant listen.
Onbekend met de smashing pumpkins, ik ga ze wat vaker opzetten
I enjoyed the album. Wasn't blown away, but very good.
1,001 albums is turning into "do I think The Smashing Pumpkins are a real band?". They clearly have some interesting things to do and their instrumental stuff is a bit wild. I kind of dig it but man do they need a new audio engineer at least on the Spotify version. The drums are muted to a fault and it doesn't sound crisp. This album is wildly too long and all over the place but I liked chunks of it for sure and they sound unique. Toss this into the bucket of "is this good singing or not". I'm not sure but I do think at least on some songs it fits really well. Despite feeling like this is too long I did like the audacity of what it is and how broad it goes in style. I don't think it all lands but one of these stars is purely on the artistic push of what this is and how bold a move it was for them at the time.
Oof this is a very long one. Great musically, great composition. Big bucks production here. A really good double album. I don't care much for Billy as a person. As a vocalist sometimes what he does works but often I'm tired of his choices.
The usual and beautiful
Thought they were just another grunge band…didn’t realize the scope of their stylistic competence…reminds me of one of my favorite breweries; if you don’t like the beer you’re drinking it’s because you don’t like that style, it’s not because they made a bad version of it..
This was a defining album growing up for me. Over the years, I feel like I’ve looked back on it with rose colored glasses. A lot of it still holds up, but listening to it with fresh critical ears, there’s some bloat to it. The first part (disc 1 from the original CD release) sets the bar high, but the second part (disc 2) doesn’t quite stick the landing as well as it could. Still, a great album, and still hold it very near and dear to my heart, but not quite perfection.
Despite seeing the Pumpkins in concert a few times, I'd never listened to this album all the way through. As a kid, "Tonight, Tonight" was one of my favourite songs. If this album was cut down to just the hits and a couple others, it would be basically perfect. As it is, it's overly long with too much filler.
this album surprised me! i was expecting a pure grunge and alternative album, but the smashing pumpkins didn't allow themselves to be defined. there was some beautiful piano work that took my breath away! they allowed themselves to explore metal and the more artsy side of rock. as a result, songs within mellon collie and the infinite sadness were interesting and different. to be fair, while i enjoyed this album and there was no wasted space, i do not know why it had to be a double album at two full hours. the music was great, creative, and intriguing, yet i feel like they could've gotten their point across in under an hour.
This album is chock full of such great Smashing Pumpkins songs, some of which are hits, others not. There's still plenty of grunge here to love, but this album has given way a lot more to the art rock side of the band. The two genres seem as if they would clash in almost every situation, but it somehow works here. It's not incredibly surprising that they make it work here; from their inception, they had a knack for blending grunge with more "melodic" music. That said, this was probably their last grunge album, before they transitioned away from that sound for more electronic rock sounds. I know a lot of people complain that Billy Corgan can't sing. I don't argue that, but I just feel like it doesn't end up mattering. Again, it is something else that simply works for these guys. I absolutely dug this album, don't get me wrong. But it was too long, felt a bit self-indulgent, and some of the art rock tracks just dragged a little too much. And sure, it's a double album so the length is "justified", but I rarely have the listening patience for a double album of any kind. I was definitely ready to be done by the time it was finished.
Little long for my liking but still a great album. The harder faster paced songs were more up my alley but the ballads and slower songs still make the album worth listening to.
I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. I already knew a few Smashing Pumpkins songs that I had assumed were singles from across their discography - Turns out they were all from this album (Tonight, Zero, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979). My heart sank when I opened the album and saw it was 28 songs and over 2 hours long. As far as I’m concerned the perfect album length is 45 minutes. Any longer and you’re almost guaranteed a lot of filler. I was surprised to not find any on this album, although I did enjoy the first half more than the second, probably due to musical fatigue. There were a few moments that even made me “Oh, hell yeah!” out loud (e.g. when the drums kick in on An Ode to No One). Highlights: Bullet with Butterfly Wings, An Ode to No One, 1979.
4.5 stars! It's not close to Siamese dream but I still listen to that album.
I used to be obsessed with this album. Still great, not elite. Tonight, Zero, Bullet, and Muzzle still pump me up
A moment in time and such a unique style.
holy shit, this album is LONG. and it suffers from it, in my opinion. it has some truly great songs, iconic bangers and songs that i can’t even remember. also the songwriting is kinda all over the place. this album has some hard hitting lines, but also some unbearably cringy ones. and wtf was “tales of a scorched earth”? overall though i can say i enjoyed it.
Ambitious in scope yet lacking focus, this feels like the output of a band suffering through a profound identity crisis. It simply doesn’t come together as a cohesive piece of art. They are truly at their best in post-grunge goth mode of “JellyBelly”, “Zero”, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”, etc. The ballads seem out of place, mostly because the harder edged tracked are so perfectly executed in comparison. While every song on the album is done well, some of the softer ones seem included solely for the sake of making a double album - they feel like outtakes rather than thoughtfully curated elements. While some of their best known work is here (“1979”, “Tonight Tonight”) it feels like they would be better suited for another album. It’s just too much thrown together. Again, any 10 songs on here put together would be a 4+ star record. This suffered from being too packed. 3.5
Great album that is let down by how self indulgently long it is. With a good prune it is an easy 5, but the padding let's it down.
Didn't listen in full, but I want to! It goes all over the place from loud and heavy rock to ballads which was a little surprising, and has a crazy amount of tracks. But good stuff.
Didn’t finish this album but was a solid listen !!
great songs, lots of filler
I've always been daunted by the 2 hour runtime so I've never listened to this album all the way through despite loving the singles and Siamese Dream. I'm glad that this project finally motivated me to do so. Even though it's 2 hours long, I enjoyed every minute of it. There isn't as much bloat on here as I expected, although the second half is just good while the first half is mind-blowing. If this was the first half only--with 1979 promoted to the first half--it would be a 5 but I have to acknowledge the inconsistency and give it a 4.5. Highlights: Jellybelly, Here Is No Why, Galapogos, Muzzle
Started with Siamese Dreams and though the SP were phenomenal. This sounds more of a Mish mash. Some great songs but still something missing for me.
4.1/5 so many bangers on this album but Love, Tales of a scorched Earth and X.Y.U. exist and it's 2 hours long
A really great album that goes on for a bit too long. There are some great tracks like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "Tonight, Tonight". 4/5.
not a fan of Corgan's voice. but the music is nice. More of a prog feel than I was expecting. 4/5
I think the reason the Pumpkins haven't ever clicked with me is Billy Corgan's voice. And if there ever was an album to test this theory, this would be the one. At just over two hours this is a trial by fire. My theory may be correct? It's hard to say, because at times I'm annoyed with the vocals, other times I feel they fit perfectly, and then there's times where both are true. Either way this is a mondo album filled with an intense variety of sounds and genres. It's hard not to admire the sheer scope, and I came out on the other end rather liking it in spite of my mixed feelings on Billy's vocals.
Felt a bit too long, and some songs blended together, but overa;; a very good album.
Sounded like skater but but long
Every song on this double album is great, but it's so long that I end up forgetting what happened an hour ago. Even though all of the songs are good, because of the sheer number of them, a lot of the tracks blend together and few actually stand out on their own. The ending is peak though
This album needs to be blasted on a cross country drive. Moments I was in tune, others I was waiting to get thru more hard core rock moments…undeniably good, though
Good album enjoyed more than anticipated
War sehr gut, vielseitig. Manches etwas schräg.
First time listening all the way through in over 10 years. It’s rawer than I remember, maybe not as intentional as I remember, full of grunge.
The album is almost transcendental techno disguised as teen angst fueled rock. The music is beautifully composed but the immature lyrics and Billy Corgan’s voice are dealbreakers. Props to the Instrumental trax but his vocal ruins the album for me.
Nice. Emo
7/10
Beautiful albulm. Less heavy than I'd anticipated, great melodies.
Smaching pumpkins 2nd best album
Sprawling, epic monster of an album that comes damn close to justifying its massive runtime. I was never exactly sure what to expect from the next track and I was rarely disappointed, it was a lot of fun to just put this on and enjoy the ride.
Long. Some great tunes. Plus, who puts out a double album in 1995?
Interesting vocal vibe, should dig further.
Ótimo álbum! Sonoridade de primeira mesmo.
I am goof and I loved this album it's my favourite and I decided this rating on my own. 4/4 extreme gooDness. Tonight tonight is my favourite as well.
This is a fantastic album. Most songs are ones that I am not tempted to hit the next button on. That means I like what I'm listening to. This is something certainly worth owning and listening to so it deserves it's place on this list as "an album to hear before you die". This is an easy 4 out of 5 compared to the crap I have heard before it.
Great album. Loved it as a kid and still love it now. Melodic and heavy at the same time
The world is a vampire
This could have been a 4.5 to 5 for me had they made this just one hour of the best parts. Way too long and some songs clearly could have been scraped. Still the best parts are really good. Soft 4
good stuff
My wife hates this album. She says its the big sell out album for Corgan, but I cant help but really like it. The theme, the tracks, its just got some great production and ends up being a pretty good (if way too long) album. 4/5
So good
Ambitious, trendsetting. It's always great to hear an artist or group fire on all cylinders and that's what The Smashing Pumpkins did here. Just raw output of emotion, musicality, and cohesion. Only four stars because I don't think I will come back to this very often, but a very good project.
The closest I’ve been to giving an album a 5, but the run time is holding me back. A two disc, two hour album is just a bit much, even if I really like the songs. Favorite song: Bullet with Butterfly Wings Least favorite: Don’t really have one
Liked disc 2 more than disc 1 (with the major exception of Tales of a Scorched Earth), though the sound felt very similar the whole way through. Really what that means is that I preferred the last run of songs that chilled all the way out and became significantly less ~rock. Overall good though? Just not really my style.
Pretty good.
Good
Not sure that I've listened to this start to finish in more than 20 years. Lots of high marks.
Pretty sure they could have pared this down to one disc, but any album with "Tonight, Tonight," "Zero," "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," and "1979" gets no fewer than four stars.
1. gorgeous album cover! not to be annoying but so far (nearing the end of side 1) this is SUCH a great album. i shall continue to listen. 2. i'm getting a bit drained, this is a long fucking album. 1979 just came on though (yey!!!!) 3. on the whole i think the first half is better than the second half, i am still enjoying it but it's more same-y than the first half. or maybe i'm just smashing pumpkins-ed out 4. the last song is lovely 5. on the whole i really enjoyed this album i like the variations on the genre and the different things it tries out. i'd like to know its influences. and what it influenced. a nice thing to listen to from start to finish i wouldn't do it again but now i know what songs i like from it !!! yey!
Waves of Nostalgia are hard to ignore. I was expecting a lot of filler revisiting this double album, but it’s that’s not the case. Really enjoyed getting back to this after a long break
A bit long.
Wow. 2 hours. I would wager if i discovered this back in the day, i would have been able to give each track significant time to get under my skin. So both the easy to approach and more challenging/noisy tracks would have the same positive reaction. I do respect the energy and angst that drives many of the tracks and come away with a positive experience. Outside of the obvious bangers, it seems a repeating set of flavors but all good alternative.
In a nutshell: one of the last great concept albums of the century. If you’re already familiar with the album, try listening in “original vinyl version” track list order (see the Wikipedia page for details) so you can get a different listening experience. Overall: 8/10
I remember buying this album on double CD when it came out. Haven't listened to the whole thing in quite a while but was pleasantly surprised that my old favorites still resonate.
there’s one and a half GREAT albums here. “adore” forever
Love this album
This alvum would easily be a 5 if there were less songs on it. I think Siamese dream is the better album
This album did not need to as long as it is. Over half of the songs could have been cut and this would have basically been a greatest hits. I put off listening to this album because I rarely have 2 hours together to dedicate to one album. I chose the day I drove two hours to the airport. It was early morning, dark, and very foggy. Most of the songs made my drive worse. Usually I like driving music that keeps me on the road, not songs that make me want to drive off of it. I'm conflicted about what my rating should be. I'm going to round up from a 3.5. It's mostly good. I did get sick of a few tracks before they were over, and a lot of them sound very similar. And Billy Corgan's voice... But the hits are the hits. They're good.
It’s hard to believe that this album is 28 yrs old. I would say it’s one of the defining albums of the early Indie-Emo rock genre, as it was listened to obsessively by many angsty teens. The 2 hr length is weighty, and this album is almost schizophrenic melding gentle ballads with some very aggressive hard rock songs. However it’s hard to dispute that this album spawned a ton of great singles that have aged very nicely over the decades, and that itself defines an iconic album for me.
Excellent album
I THOUGHT I MISSED THE REVIEW DEADLINE I really enjoyed listening to this album. I would have to agree with Mike that the first half was better than the second. It was a long album but I never felt bored or ready to listen to something else. 4/5
Long but quite good
Dik dik dik dik, tonight tonight, bullet sws en to forgive, smashing pumpkins underrated
8.5/10
