Reviews (page 10 of 14)

This is Alex Pechlivanos music. The Smashing Pumpkins, Cage the Elephant, and Rage Against the Machine. I liked it! I think “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “Zero” were the highlights. Didn’t realize there was a second disc. Holy moly. But I can officially say I have heard The Smashing Pumpkins and they were, as Wallace says, smashing. The Dad Rock of my generation.

2.75/5

Nice but I feel there's a lot of filler

Rule #1: No album ever needs to be over two hours long. Rule #2: If you're a group as talented as Smashing Pumpkins, you're going to have some decent songs on any album you make. Rule #3: NO album EVER needs to be over two hours long!

Definitely my most enjoyable listen of this album, but man I’ve always hated Zero. Sounds so rancid and expired, but a lot of tracks I see myself coming back to. Definitely don’t love it, but it nails the teenage angst that Billy Corgan seems to bask in.

Grunge is not my jam. But it was fine.

I think that shitty reality show Whale Wars did irreperable damage to Smashing Pumpkins because I cant help but laugh whenever I hear Bullet With Butterfly Wings, it was used for the intro and elicited chuckles from me every time. I appreciate how grand they sound, they've always had that larger than life feeling to their music. There are some gems in here but you have to wade through a ton of garbage inbetween the hits. Why two discs? You just spread yourself thin.

All double albums are 3 stars with a 5 star album buried inside. This one is no different. 2 fucking hours of Corgans nasally whine is too damn much. Someone in the studio needed to tell them No every once in a while.

Lots of nostalgia. Liked the orchestral elements. Got a bit old after about 5 or 6 songs.

Some bangers. Dude has a very special voice but it works for this type of music. Whiney and emotional and dramatic in the best ways. But when they say 'infinite sadness' they really mean it, way too damn long of an album.

Occupies a weird space in the zeitgeist. They were obviously at the peak of their success at the time but it's hard to trace their handprints beyond this era. Bullet With Butterfly Wings is the only single that demonstrates their penchant for aggression but the album's actually got a surprising heaviness to it. The ballads are interwoven fairly nicely with the harder-rocking tracks. I'm not even dinging the record it for its length, but I don't find much interesting beyond what I list below. Porcelina of the Vast Oceans doesn't have enough going on to justify the 9-minute length, however. Tales of a Scorched Earth wouldn't be out of place on a Deftones record (their debut came out the same year as this.) Highlights: Bodies, An Ode to No One, Muzzle (some cool drumming by Chamberlin at the end), all the singles

If this had been cut from 2hrs to 1 hr it could have been 5 stars. On the first disc you have a 9min song that in no way justifies the length or a place on the album. The self-indulgence really let's this down along with some melodramatic lyrics. It's a shame but you also have a bunch of timeless pieces on this album. I like The Smashing Pumpkins and have seen them live. Originally had this as a 4 but 2hrs is just too much and the 2nd disc is a slog at times. 3/5.

it was ok. There were some cool guitar bits. does that justify the 2 hour length in my opinion? Not really. Did the lyrics blow me away? Not really. I would listen to some songs again and maybe say 'huh this is cool' in a grocery store. It is worth mentioning that I took a few days break in-between the first disc and second disc, which might have altered my opinion. '1979' was the best track.

1995 Billy's whiny vocals have alway put me off indulging in this band. I can report that it's better than I suspected. The album, not Billy's vocals. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Quite possibly Anthemic ★★★☆☆ (6.5/10)

Better than I was expecting, as I'm not a fan of his Billie's vocal

Classic but not really my thing

Overall a good album. Some real standouts like 1979.

Fairly entertaining though not my favorite style. Best song on here “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”

Hot take: as good as the loud rock songs are, i like the slow songs more

It was pretty solid but not my type of rock. I don’t really know why actually. It was maybe a bit too deep tones for me or something?

Jesus, that was long. I liked the first part of the second album the most but even that dragged with the last few tracks. Bullet With Butterfly Wings and 1979 were great tracks but don't really make up for the other 26 which, although not bad, were pretty whiny and grading to listen to. Usually 3/5s for me are albums I wouldn't mind listening to again but I don't think that's the case with this one. Solid songs, meh album.

Good album, enjoyed the listen! 6.8/10

I would like this album better if it were about 45 minutes of its best material.

I listened to this very early on a Sunday morning while getting ready for a 100 mile bike race - so admittedly, I could have missed some nuance. Overall, a lot of this felt pretty similar with the only notable variation being whether the song had orchestral support or it was just a straight heavy grunge arrangement. Especially on side one. Side two felt a little more dynamic, but not by much. Billy Corgan's voice isn't especially good and, in my experience, it doesn't grow on you over time. Someone will need to explain the underlying concept to me and justify why this needed to be a double album. On the surface, it doesn't make sense to me. As much as I appreciated Siamese Dream when I reviewed that record, I’m leaning the other way on this one. I appreciate artists taking big swings but this didn’t quite make it out of the park.

Zero slap vraiment i don’t like all the screaming la plupart du temps je trouvais ça pas pire, mais le criage… je trippais pas trop là-dessus. et 2h c’est vraiment long quand les chansons se ressemblent pas mal toutes

I knew (and loved) the singles. I gave the whole thing a listen for the first time. Bonkers. That's A LOT of music. Weird that I sat this one out. I'll probably go back to it at some point.

Little heavy metal in parts but overall good album

Certainly consistent, but I just don't want to listen to two hours of the same thing

Fuck this website for giving me a 2 hour album with his nasally ass voice. If i get behing his vocals,i would really, love this record. Will relisten in a while.Good mix of genres but goddamn billy open your nose 6.7

Àgæt plata en lögin samt full niðurdrepandi

Áhugaverð plata. Af svona mörgum lögum hljóta einhver að vera góð. Seinni hlutinn aðeins þéttari og betri. Kann að meta hvað var gert þarna, þó að ég tengi ekki fullkomlega.

Moro moro :D Nyt oli hyvä albumi vaikka vähän pidempi oli. Ois saanu olla enemmän bullet with butterfly wings tyylisiä biisejä.

Kuitenkin ns. täytetavaraa on liikaa.

A few good tracks but mostly too long and a bit repetitive.

Smashing Pumpkins can write some really good grunge/hard rock/alternative tracks and it shows here (Jellybelly, Bullet with Butterfly Wings) but there's also a lot of songs on here I consider filler or uninteresting. Billy Corgan's vocals for ballads/slower tracks don't do it for me. This album is much too long imo.

It's too long and overrated. There are great songs, absolutely, but there are also many 'meh' songs. No studio album should ever be two hours long. Overall, a listenable, but overblown and self-indulgent album with a few really incredible bangers. 3/5

louder then expected

Not the most cohesive but I liked some tracks

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is a sprawling album whose length can feel overwhelming, but its mix of fury, melancholy, and drama makes it a striking piece of work.

"I've never been in love with Smashing Pumpkins' sound and I really don't enjoy Billy Corgan's voice as it often alienates me when listening. Overall I find the music enjoyable. The heavier songs are the highlights here since the music is more in the forefront and his vocals seem to take a backseat. The album sound is cohesive throughout and though I am not sure this needed to be a double album, it doesn't overstay its welcome."

I remember being so excited when this album came out only to be wildly disappointed because it wasn’t nearly as good as the first two. It has aged ok, but still a distant third.

Thought that would never end... Not one I'd recommend using headphones for, could've broken that up into 2 albums pretty easily I'd say as well.

Some were too good most too meh

Year I was born, let’s go! — This gave me whiplash. There were songs that I loved (To Forgive, Take Me Down, Farewell and Goodnight) and songs that drove me mental but overall … it was decent. I can now say that I know more than one Smashing Pumpkins song so 👍🏼

really great first disc

Some songs are decent here but I can't stand how affected billy corgans voice is. Gets old over an album this length 2.5*

felt elderly listening to anything that had screaming in it, i can't lie. i can't hang like i used to, it reminded me far too much of high school: which seems to be a general consensus on a lot of smashing pumpkins' work. it's a very well put together album, though. a bit lengthy at points, with songs that drag on — but i did, at least, feel like it provided a full album experience to me upon my listen. not in a storyteller way, but it was very intentional in the track listing and order. smashing pumpkins is my 10-years younger cousin's favorite band, and i think that if i was ten years younger i would've loved this quite a bit more? it feels very dated in my mind, but that is probably because i hit my "male manipulator" music phase at a very specific time in my life, and this goes hand in hand with those types of bands, in my opinion. had quite a few bangers, but standouts to me: X.Y.U., Jellybelly, Lily (My One and Only), Tonight, Tonight and 1979. i am always going to like siamese dream better, though. i don't know if that's an unpopular opinion, but it was the album i listened to when i was seventeen, so obviously i'm going to latch onto it more.

Not a bad album with some interesting songs but it seemed to last forever.

some good songs but a really long album, my god

Some great riffs, and some great tracks, but a lot to get through

Mwehh, not my fav

An enormous effort by Corgan and the band. There are some terrific songs on this LP particularly in the first LP. That's probably where it should of ended. Concept albums of this length get boring and tedious.

I grew up in the 90s so I thought I liked the smashing pumpkins, guess I just like the hits. A lot heavier than I was expecting. Still had enough hits to keep it at a 3. Also 2 hours? C’mon.

I was really excited for this as I don't think I have ever listened to this whole album...and now I think I know why. A few really great jams, but a lot of... oof.

This is my first time listening to a full Smashing Pumpkins album. The hits on this album are classic at this point. I think this album is just too long. If you trimmed it down to one album of all the bangers its an easy 4 or 5 star album

Favorites (listened to Disc A only): Tonight, Tonight Here Is No Why - Sounds a lot like Greta Van Fleet Bullet With Butterfly Wings To Forgive Cupid De Locke Galapogos Porcelina of the Vast Oceans Very contrasting tracks. Mostly not my style, but some Kishi Bashi-ness in some slower tracks.

It was sooooo long and I did the 2 hr version not the 5 (!!!!)

This is a nice album to revisit. It's been years, probably 10+, since I've listened to this as a complete album. The album doesn't hold up as much as memory would like it to, but it's still pretty good. One thing I wasn't ready for was the memories of close friends I had back when I was listening to this a lot, who have passed away. I guess they'll always live on as I remember them, thanks to the music we enjoyed together.

some songs, such as "zero" are dear to me, but times are over when i would pretend that i'd love that thing as a whole.

Like a lot of double albums Mellon Collie is full of good songs, decent songs and a fair number of forgettable songs. These kinds of albums are often ambitious by nature and, as such, are usually overstuffed with material that could have been edited out. I enjoyed the tonal shifts in the album from the quiet songs to the hard driving relentless pieces. There’s a fascinating diversity of genres in this album as well (ranging from alt rock to metal to grunge). I have to admit that I’m a bit iffy on Corgan’s vocals which can sound pretty whiny at times. Consequently I wonder if I’ll ever listen to this album in its entirety again.

The album itself wasn't for me. It felt like background music and not actual music that I'd jam to. I'll give it 5/10 because it wasn't bad but it just wasn't what I wished for.

A two plus hour double album was fucking torture

loved some songs but too hard rock for me in some songs

Some really good songs on here, but I have a rough time handling his voice for an entire album.

Interesting. Never listened to this because I didn't like the title. I think that with a different vocalist I'd be giving this a higher score. Not keen on the way he strains his voice for emphasis; it's better on the slower tracks.

There's a five star album hiding in here, but it's overwhelmed by the amount of throwaway on this double album.

This was an interesting one as I loved some of the songs but also hard rock is the only genre I just cannot enjoy so some of this was really difficult to get through. Even when I didn't like the music I appreciated the lyrics, but when the music was "softer", I loved both! My favourite song was 'Lily' as I enjoyed the story telling! I also liked 'Tonight, Tonight', 'Galapogos', 'Farewell and Goodnight' and '1979'.

Some great songs, but the album as a whole is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long and a lot of songs become filler this way. Siamese dream is way better because of this reason I think. I do love the song 1979!

No tengo tanto tiempo

Me Childhood …. Lol….. Aight

Liker de rolige partiene best. 3.5!

i'd like to like it, but no

I didn’t listen to the hole album as it has two discs and is two hours long, which is too much to listen for a band and music that doesn’t speak to me. The song that I had listened to sounded okey but, except for one that had no lyrics, I wouldn’t listen to any of them again probably. So I think that 3/5 is a fair score, but also I might give it a 2, no okey 2 is too low. I kinda wish the system was 1-10

The music is good but billy corgan is a terrible frontman with an awful voice (and by all accounts is a massive twat)

Gotta respect a band who is inspired by every single genre of music they’ve ever heard

Phew. I've now had both Pumpkins albums, and can be done with Creepy Corgan. I was always baffled as to why this needed to be a double album. Honestly, I'm a sucker for just about anything with orchestral backing, so I like the title song. That guitar line in Tonight really throws me back. The singles are worth it, the rest is a bit meh. I don't know if it's intentional, but the generator seems to dole out the double+ albums on Fridays. I really appreciate that.

This album came out just after my 12th birthday and was ten or so cd's I ever bought. My thought back then was this album had a handful of really great songs but was waaaaaaay too long and Billy Crogan's voice quickly wears out its welcome. My thought almost 30 years later is pretty much the exact same. I listened to this album in full the first time around and have never again done so until today and it was rough to get through this 121 minutes. This music is pretty solid throughout and Billy is a good lyricist, but I can only handle his whininess in small batches - a song or two at a time. I am not a Pumpkins expert or even close to a big fan, but this was a great undertaking of an album and they deserve credit, but it probably isn't their best work. This album could be a really strong 4+ if they cut it down to the 50 minute mark, but just too much unneeded stuff along the way that really makes it drag. 5.8/10 114/1001

A lot of good songs, but also so long that I probably won't come back to it very often

Billy Corgan and the Infinite Album.

Some great songs. He had it going on for a while but no one needs a two hour album from anyone. The Wall is 80 minutes long. This one is 40 minutes longer. That's gonna cost you a star Billy Boy

Not a great batting average on this one... The hits hit, but oh boy do those misses miss.

the world is a vampire

A 2 hour long double album which feels very bloated. I honestly cant see why this album is so highly rated. If it was shorter and more concise i could see why. Of course "1979", "Tonight, Tonight" and "Zero" are great but theyre pretty much the only songs worth coming back to here. 6/10 Favourite: Zero Least Favourite: We Only Come Out at Night

A sprawling, ambitious double album that showcases great band chemistry and moments of brilliance, 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 is both impressive and frustrating. Billy Corgan’s voice works beautifully on some tracks, adding vulnerability and emotion, but on others it veers into the outright annoying. The genre mix — ranging from piano ballads to grunge, metal, and dreamy alt-rock — feels bold but also uneven. And yes, Corgan’s ego is on full display here, resulting in a 122-minute marathon that could have easily been trimmed to something sharper and more focused. A flawed epic, but not without its charm.

Favorites: Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, Tonight, Tonight, Jellybelly, Zero, Take Me Down, 1979, Beautiful, By Starlight

I never really got that in to this band. The singers voice felt to nasally when I heard them in the early 90s. Today I can appreciate the music better with more mature ears/attitude. There are several good songs on this album and it is definitely something I would listen to again.

I liked some of this album, and under other circumstances this could have been a 3, but a city break with family during a heat wave requiring an electric fan whenever in the hotel room is not a good time to try to listen to a double album which lurches about rather. 3.5

Nice work

usually not my style, but there were some nice songs! Would've put 3.5 if i could :)

What a ride. Went from "I don't like it" to "oh wow that's cool" to "mehh" to "I get the hang of it"

Absoluut een vibe. Maar 2 uur? Dat had niet gehoeven.

Has some great songs. Would be amazing live. Don’t love the screaming songs. Some great guitar sounds. Would prefer if it was a single disc album.

Hit and miss album for me. I don't mind the length, and really enjoyed all of the acoustic, stripped back songs. 1979 is a song my parents played constantly growing up so that was a nice surprise too, I never knew the name of the song. Grunge rock isn't my favorite genre, but I can appreciate a lot of the artistry of this album as a whole.

I liked most of what I had time to listen to. After about an hour I felt I’d heard all I needed to.

sin mas

This was a really long album, and I owe it another listen all in one go to really absorb it. The gist of it this go-around was that there were some good ones, and some I had heard before, but I had a hard time getting through it and I don't super care for these folks.

I have listened to a fair bit of The Smashing Pumpkins, but never a full album like this. I am not sure the songs I enjoy outweigh the ones I would prefer to skip.

Love the ambition and production, though I would prefer fewer of the harder/punkier songs in lieu of more quiet gems.

way too long, not their best album

Interesting in some ways but I’m not listening to this whole thing

Basic mid 90's alt rock. Nothing special but not bad although the record is excessively long

emt iha hyvää musaa mut eipä silleen jää mielee kauheesti biisei. Pitkä on!

First time hearing this album and I was a teenager in the 90’s. I think I need another listen. I think it would have been a four star album if it only had two sides

Better than expected. I like the slower songs a lot more.

Not someone I've ever really listened to but actually quite enjoyed

As someone who bought Siamese Dream when it came out but thought it could stand to lose a couple of tracks, I've always been a bit daunted by the idea of a Smashing Pumpkins double album. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was pretty much what I expected - there are some good songs here, but it would have just worked better for me if it wasn't so very, very long.

Not heard this before and after the first two tracks it went in a different direction. I liked this album and that was a surprise.

Good but very long and bloated

It's obviously too long. There are good songs here, but Billy Corgan's voice isn't pleasant enough to listen to for 2 hours. 3 stars.

Decent, reminiscent of the 90s

This coud easily be a 4,5 star album for me, if it wasn't so long...perhaps it's not fair to judge it this way as I only listened to it once (as it's so long)...sometimes Billy's voice started to annoy me a bit...some really really good songs on this! Maybe it will grow on me if I give it a couple more spins...

While it is a great album, it does feel a bit bloated

This felt like a whole experience. I like the orchestral parts and softer elements. A lot of different styles in one looong album. Some heavy drum beats and crisp guitar riffs. Not really a fan of the nasal, whiny vocals.

This album is very long.

Time Capsule album. Way too long.

Too long

This is the second album by The Smashing Pumpkins that I've been served on this site. I was pleasantly surprised by the first one (Siamese Dream) and gave it 4 stars. This album is more of the same. The vocals sound a lot like Mick Jagger, almost to the point where it felt like it was an intentional ploy. Musically it was really good, lots of different sounds and genres. It did feel like it was probably 30 minutes too long and a few of the weaker tracks could have been binned.

Billy Corgan's voice only suits the heavy stuff on this and those are the songs I like least. The songs I like most are ruined by his totally out of place vocals. Hey, I found something to say about this beyond the fact that it's too long, nice!

This is okay but struggles to justify it's runtime

It wasn’t bad. I like a good concept album and one exploring the themes of depression, sadness, and loneliness is an interesting idea. But, it doesn’t have to be two hours. It lost interest around the middle of Part 2. Billy Corgan’s voice does start to get grating after a while.

There are a few standout moments in this tracklist for sure, but generally I feel like the overall experience is attenuated given how long the album is. It's not a bad listen for sure, but just a tad bloated with some songs that are pretty bland. 3.2/5 -> 3/5

A sprawling epic of grungy tunes that merges heavy distorted rock and softer subtler sounds (a bit psychedelic at times) with teenage cringey sensitivity and over-emotion. They really just put it all on the table. Somehow seeming both quite pretentious (a 2 hour “concept” album) and fairly unpretentious at the same time (teenage/YA feelings of being sad and mad and misunderstood). A guitar-centric album that has plenty of fuzzed-out ripping chordy riffs and noisy affected guitar solos across the 2 hour run time. Best played loud. They’re at their best when showing their heaviest, angriest, aggressive side. The rest of it is still fine, and necessary to mix the sound up, but don’t grab my attention as much. The first half of side one is really engaging, and then my attention waxes and wanes a bit. But I’m drawn back in when they heavy fuzzy riffs come around.

Rating: 3.5 Notable songs: Tonight Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979 Perfect for putting on in the background. Few Notable bangers. LONG. Not necessarily bad but songs blend together.

I have so many mixed opinions on this. I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more without the vocals or at least better vocals. everything else is pretty nice but also I ain't spending 2 hours with mellon collie. I will come back to it later, just not right now.

Decent album. A lot of great songs, but it’s too long and after a while many of the songs begin to meld together and it starts feeling like a chore to get through the whole thing.

Lemppari: Thru The Eyes Of Ruby Vähiten lemppari: Muzzle

A lot of the songs are good, but towards the end they obviously ran out of inspiration. The album would have been better if it was at least an hour shorter. It has more variation than their other album on the list. More dynamic. The singing is not as annoying all of the time. Favorite song: bullet with butterfly wings.

I like a few songs but their sound not for me. I remember seeing them in concert in a small venue and thought my eardrums would burst. Never forgave em for it haha

Amazing songs but way too long.

A lot of good songs, that were surrounded surrounded by mediocre filler. Not bad though. 7/10

It was pretty good

I thought it only ehh when it was released still kind of feel that way.

The Smashing Pumpkins have been known to me by name as an alternative hard rock band for quite some time. I'm not sure if I've ever heard a song by them. I certainly didn't know this album. There were a lot of good ideas on it. However, none of the songs really stuck in my memory enough to make me want to listen to them again. But maybe I'll have to give the album a second chance. 3/5

first album had a few songs that were nice. meh overall. not my thing

Zero is fucking excellent. So is Bullet etc as well.

Despite how foundational this album was to alternative rock, I've actually never listened to the album. Holy crap is it long. I appreciate how many different sounds they've fit into it, but it overstays its welcome.

It’s okay, but I missed the banger hits on that album. All in all okay but I need more than just 2 hours of music.

Album ran out of steam. It definitely did not need to be a double album. Would have been a 4 otherwise

infinite is right

I think I agree with Robert Christgau on this one: Lot of ambition on this record, but it only really comes together on a few songs. Tonight Tonight and 1979 are by far the best singles. Galapagos and Muzzle are stand-out album tracks. The lyrics (when easily discernable) are lacking as compared to the music, and some of the music is *very* much "of its time", meaning for me it sounds a lot less fresh and unique than it may have in 1996. I'm sure I listened to this album on repeat in college, but it definitely left less of an impression on me than other albums from the time. Also, some of the songs (and their titles) remain cringey to me 30+ years later.

Overblown production. All the amazing bits of Siamese Dream that were dialled up to 11, but with little light and shade, just bombast. A tiring listen.

I already knew that I liked a few songs from this album, primarily 1979. Overall, I'm not a big fan of the sound of the vocalist. I can definitely see how it influenced artists that followed and it's an interesting inflection point between punk/grunge into emo, post punk, and alternative rock. I probably can't give it a fair evaluation since I don't enjoy their specific sound. I can't say whether the album had much of a flow to it either, since I kept getting interrupted while listening to it at work. 2 out of 5 stars, I get it, but it ain't for me.

I never really got into the Smashing Pumkins. I tried back in the day. I even bought Siamese Dream, but really couldn’t do it. The music on this record is actually really good. It’s Billy Corgan’s voice that just pushes me away. I get into a song, then he starts singing.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (Instrumental) 3.3 Tonight, Tonight 3.8 Jellybelly 3.8 Zero 4 Here Is No Why 3.5 Bullet with Butterfly Wings 4 To Forgive 3.4 Fuck You (An Ode to No One) 3.5 Love 3.2 Cupid de Locke 3 Galapogos 3.1 Muzzle 3.3 Porcelina of the Vast Oceans 3.3 Take Me Down 3 Where Boys Fear to Tread 3.4 Bodies 3.4 Thirty-Three 3.1 In the Arms of Sleep 2.8 1979 3.7 Tales of a Scorched Earth 3 Thru the Eyes of Ruby 3.5 Stumbleine 3.2 X.Y.U. 3.6 We Only Come Out at Night 3 Beautiful 3.2 Lily (My One and Only) 3 By Starlight 3.3 Farewell and Goodnight 3 Score: 3.335714286

I didn't like the first few songs, but that's usual for me, and it was also an inclination of closedmindedness. I wasn't a fan of the guy's voice, but it grew on me eventually. As the album went on, I really liked a lot of the songs and took note of some. Near the end, I decided that I need to listen to this album again in the future because I know I will appreciate it a lot more during the second listen. Overall 7/10

Listened roughly half, maybe got something

a bit of a long album, but my problem is how bad some of the angsty lyrics are. Still, I like a good sprawling album, and the idea of the contrast of the heavy and pretty moments. The latter are gorgeous, and some of the heaviest songs rock. XYU???

The platonic ideal of a 3-star album that could easily by 5-star if it was half the length (or maybe 30% of the length considering how many of the longer song drag). Some of the best songs of Billy Corgan’s career, and all time frankly, mixed in with a lot of forgettable half-formed ideas.

Over 2 hours… This could be a 4 star album if you cut out half. Alternating between pretty good songs and senseless (to me) screaming or whispering. 2.5 starts. Benefit of the doubt 3 stars for now.

Only made it through Disc 1. Obviously, I grew up hearing a lot of this on the radio, but their music has never really done much for me. Album Cover: 8/10

Too damn long.

Kinda felt cheated out of a really good album. All the songs were recorded really muted. Now I know that could be because it’s old. Maybe the restoration wasn’t great. I dunno. The muted sound of the whole album caused a really annoying itch in the back of my head right behind my ears and that never got scratched. And that was kinda maddening. Otherwise I thought it was fine. Never listened to Smashing Punkins before.

mellon collie and the infinite album not really my speed but it's not bad. I like the less noisy songs (1979 & a lot of the last half of disc 2). Also releasing a 2 hour album is an insane flex and I respect it 3.5 stars

I've never been a big Smashing Pumpkins fan because I don't like their sound. Hearing them in album form actually elevated then a little bit because it helped me appreciate some of the depth in what they're doing. But I still don't enjoy their sound.

The first double disc I ever listened to and then owned. Before that I never realized a band could release something spanning more than a single CD. The surprise song I liked a lot back then and still do is/was Galapagos. Listening to the album now though, I think the album is a little long in the tooth and why I prefer Siamese Dream over this one nowadays.

Some bangers

I enjoyed this, I did feel the album was a bit too long though.

This CD was practically melted to my CD player when it came out I played it so much, but I haven't listened to it much in a long, long time. And honestly, it doesn't quite hold up. Sounds very dated and so many songs feel are forgettable. Probably could have been a much tighter single disc album rather than a double. The songs that resonated with me most were the mellow ones especially towards the end of disc 2. "Lily," "By Starlight," and "Fairwell and Goodnight," the last 3 songs, were my favorites in addition to "1979."

Good songs but tooooooo lonnnnnng

Good stuff from the SP but not my favourite album from them

I've never been into Smashing Pumpkins. It's all a bit samey really. Apart from 1979, Tonight Tonight etc. But can't deny how huge an album it was at the time. Too long also.

X.Y.U. // Lily //

There is 1 good record here but not 2. Too much bloated filler.

My god it's two hours. 3.

Tonight, tonight and a couple others are mesmerizingly good, unique songs. There are just so many that go too hard for me.

The Smashing Pumpkins hold no particular place in my heart. Amongst the alt-rock acts of the 90s, they rank towards the top, but the gulf between my favorites and everyone else is incredibly large. As such, I similarly find no particular love for this album. It exudes Gen-X to such an extreme degree, and it just doesn't resonate for me. It's got good songwriting and a cool blend of soft melodicism and harder grunge cuts. I don't love Billy's voice, but any misgivings about it are balanced by an enjoyable sound. As someone who frankly doesn't care for destroying squash of any variety, I don't need 2 hours. If you do, fantastic. Rating: 7/10 Favorite Song: 1979

The couple songs everyone knows are good, but after that it's a bit meloncholy

A wild ride

Kunne langt bedre lide siamese Dream. Havde svært ved at komme igennem de 2 timer her

I enjoyed it, but extremely long. Many if songs sounded skmilar

Billy Cougan is not a pleasant listen.

First and foremost, 28 songs is a lot of song for one album so keeping the quality all the way through was tough to do. I did like the mixture of heavy guitar songs with amazing drums and mellow medium tempo songs. However, the singers voice is not very pleasant to listen too and I really struggled with that. It’s from my high school era and everyone loved the band but still only sort of a middle of the road album with a few great songs on on.

OK. Didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would

Good songs, so long

Some solid songs. Just not one I’d listen to over and over and over.

point2.

Okay, this is 28 tracks long. Let's see how much of Billy Corgan's BS I can slog my way through. ... four and a half tracks before I noped out. I'm not great at separating the art from the artist, so it's genuinely more difficult for me to hear the artistic merit in Smashing Pumpkins music with my extremely low opinion of Billy Corgan as a person. It is a pretty significant part of the 90s music scene, and very influential on later artists in multiple genres. Three stars, I guess?

Jeez 2 hours long, it's fine but length is a deal breaker

It's fine, probably better than most other albums this site has spit out. But 2 hours? Get a grip. 3

There are definitely some strong songs on this album (Zero, Here Is No Why), and I've always LOVED To Forgive. Of course one of my favorite beers is named after a line in Bullet With Butterfly Wings. But overall, the album is just meh and wears me down by the end. 3/5.

It's way too long, and I say that while also thinking two slightly longer records (Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me, Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee) are among the best ever. But when it hits, wow, there's nothing like it. This is maybe my fourth listen all the way through over the years. Cupid de Locke into Galapagos is a career high. 1979 is obviously amazing too. Tonite Tonite, etc. I could see myself loving this if I were willing to regularly spend this much time with Billy Corgan. More of a 3.5

# 415 : They've done a pretty decent job, it’s a good album, it’s enjoyable and fun overall, but drags out a bit. Everybody loves this, but to me, it is better than ok, but not 5 star material. Favourite track : Bullet With Butterfly Wings

The hits are good

Good stuff here. I liked it a lot but it didn't gag me. I am between a 3 and a 4 here because it does really get to you, but compared to some other stuff I don't know. Also a bit on the long side with two discs. I'll deduct half a star for that.

Love this

Tonight, tonight is still a fantastic song.

Echt revolutionair.

Bullet with butterfly wings toimii hyvin siellä keskellä nostattajana. Ihan hilkulla 3.

Some great songs but it's too long and I think has some filler in it

Tonight, tonight & Bullet With Butterfly Wings var mina anthem i högstadiet.

A mixed bag tbh. I guess that's inevitable on a 28-track album.

I enjoyed this music. I’ve always heard of the smashing pumpkins but never actually listened to them

Tonight, Tonight, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, and 1979 are songs that are nostalgic just from being someone who has listened to alternative radio for a long time. But I’m learning I really am not into 2 hour albums. More is not better, just more. I feel very neutrally about this.

So half the songs were a 4 and half were 2 stars. Cut the 2 stars out and there would be a very nice full length album in there. This was no “The Wall” for Gen X!

I enjoyed some of this and didn’t like other parts. Glad I listened though 6/10

I did not expect every SP song i know to be from the same album. Some bangers, but 2 hours of Billy Corgan’s voice is 1.5 hours too many. Album art slaps though.

Some good songs, but overall kinda forgettable. Got tired of the guys voice by the end

Why was this a double album? There's a ton of good tracks here, and it could have been an incredible album, but it's just drowned out on disc 2 with (almost) nothing but filler.

WAY too long for this challenge. This was fine. Some nice sounds but I think I skipped before the end of every track. This sort of thing has been done a lot better before and since

Another one that would benefit from some serious trimming. There are several really strong tracks on here, but if the other twenty or so were removed, this would be a very good record.

Gish and Siamese Dream are the kind of great records that changed my world when I heard them. Later, right at the inflection point of Mellon Collie, Smashing Pumpkins morphed somehow. I never bear to listen to the whole record before now; the tracks seemed to be increasingly padded with indulgent, meandering vanities, and a lower proportion of blistering psychedelic barrages. Of course there are several proper classic bangers here, but many more dismal duds.

The Smashing Pumpkins are one of those bands where you’re like “Oohh this is going to be good” and then the lead singer starts singing and they sound like a dying cat. Despite that I still really like “Tonight, Tonight”, “1979”, and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”.

I am not a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan but I do know how good this album is. I do remember it being released and only listening to the singles. Which I enjoyed.

This might have been the high point of the band, but I just never really liked this band, so, it's hard to give it a higher score.

Einige hörenswerte Titel, ein Einfachalbum hätte gereicht.

Too long but lots of hits

Soft 90’s smumpkins

The few good ones keep this from a 2, but 2 hours is really asking for it.

Corrigan's voice is tough to take for a whole album, let alone two. Some good song-writing, but overshadowed by his screechy voice.

Enjoyed. This is an era I missed while starting a career and entering parenthood.

The cover artwork for The Smashing Pumpkins' "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" is a striking blend of whimsy and darkness. The iconic image of a girl atop a star captures a dreamlike quality, evoking both nostalgia and unease. While the collage technique is intriguing, drawing from classical art sources, it may feel disjointed to some viewers. The overall aesthetic reflects the album's themes of duality, balancing light and dark elements effectively. However, the surreal nature might not resonate with everyone. Ultimately, it stands as a memorable piece that complements the album's complexity but doesn't fully transcend its era. Album artworks rated: 17/1001 Music's great.

3* Good bangers but the album is ridiculously long. 2 whole hours!

Would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t so long.

I love the Smashing Pumpkins...but I simply did not have the time to listen to 2 hours of Smashing Pumpkins. Never listened to this album straight through because of its length. I tried. I failed. The limited amount of songs I heard outside of the hits were fine...no spectacular.

Not a huge fan of the Smashing Pumpkins but this was enjoyable enough. Not sure I will ever sit through the whole album again.

I mean it's fine. Has a bunch of good songs but why is it almost 2 hours long?!?!?!? Billy Corgan this is unnecessary 6/10

I liked the slower songs the best, especially the first.

I liked the slower/softer songs. 1979 and galapogos were standouts

There are songs I like on this album, but I don’t love the Album. In fact, I recently saw them live opening for Green Day and was even more disappointed. I enjoyed some of their songs, but as a whole, I wouldn’t just go and listen to this album.

Too long. Didn’t listen to it all

Fun fact: Being John Malkovich was originally supposed to be Being Billy Corgan but he only wanted to film the scenes in the universe where every character was him.

Have never really listened to this album before - and really only know the singles :Tonight, Tonight, 1979 and Bullet with Butterfly Wings which are all great songs (although not quite as good as Today). At 2 hours the rest of the album feels bloated and quite varied in tone. Unfortunately do not have the time the album probably needs for me to give it enough listens to fully appreciate it. After my first run through I think that Siamese Dreams is the much stronger album.

I think the cover art and the album title are quite brilliant. As for the music, it's certainly commendable for it's epic production, featuring some brilliantly sweeping arrangements and tight musicianship. It's a very long album (double CD, triple vinyl), so you could say it's a sprawling affair. I think one issue is Billy Corgan's vocals, while perfectly acceptable, struggle to carry it for the full two hours of music. Ya know, if you directly compare this to 'The White Album' (which isn't that much shorter), The Beatles had 4 vocalists and a lot more variation in singing styles and moods. By song 5 on The Smashing Pumpkins, I had a head ache coming on. Final analysis, probably really a 2, but 2 feels a bit mean so I bumped it up to 3.

Following up Siamese Dream, which teenage me deemed one of the greatest albums ever written, was always going to be tough. This double album is long and probably contains some of greatest songs written by The Smashing Pumpkins, aside from those on Siamese Dream. It successfully captures all the emotions and turmoil of being 15, an example of a band understanding their fanbase and writing songs specifically for them perhaps. However, whilst Siamese Dream still holds up well 30 years later, MCIS feels like more of a chaotic mess than a masterpiece. In hindsight, perhaps a shorter single album would have survived better.

Great fun but far too long.

I always wanted to like this album more than I actually did. There are many great highlights, but like most other reviewers, the double-album feels far too long, most get tired of Corgan's vocals after 20 minutes.

This didn't need to be a double album. There are good songs on here and if the fat was trimmed, this could have been a really good album. Instead, some decent tracks and a lot of filler. Gets a passing grade but that's all.

Solid album. Lots of hits. Some overplayed a bit much when released. Just a tad long for me. 3.75

Better than I expected. There are some really, really good songs. But his voice is still terribly grating.

It’s amazing how they can go from soft and sensitive to ripping boarder line metal. They’re diverse. Some of these songs are iconic and hold up. Some of these are outright bad. I think the album could have been trimmed down to one disc.

Album is okay. Overall the tone really isn’t my thing, but the songs I knew before listening are still good. A two plus hour album is rough though. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

A bit of a long one to get through. Not really the music that appeals to me these days. I can get into some of the tracks. I can dig the musical theme throughout, like a concept album, which I hold a lot of respect for. It’s just not for me these days. Maybe after a few more listens I’ll recognize some tracks that have caught my attentIon.

It's good. But it falls into that category of rock that it just a bit top end on the levels and I fin it all a bit ... scratchy.

A double album was probably too indulgent. There's definitely 42 min of good songs on there.

Surprisingly enjoyed

I loved Siamese Dream, but didn't like singles from this one, so I never had the opportunity to listen to it until now. Wow it's long, but there is a lot of good music in here, just not as good as Siamese Dream in my opinion. As others have said, Jimmy Chamberlin's drumming stands out. Liked Songs Added: Muzzle Where Boys Fear To Tread Bodies

Dense. Angry. Anguished. Sprawling, in a sense, but samey, too. (If I had enjoyed it more, I would probably have said something like "sonically consistent", but there is a lot of it that is ok, but also very like the rest of it without being in any way outstanding.) Some good guitar sounds, and striking bass playing. I listened to it twice, which is probably not enough to unveil its mysteries, but twice round was plenty for me

Too long and mixed everything possible

This surprised me a lot, the world is a vampire. Too long of an album tho.

I wanted to give it a 3 star for being so fucking long, but it's not a threefer... I could probably edit this down to a 75 min strong to high 3½ star... mostly cutting from disc 2. Disc one actually is not that bad as it is even with "Zero" still in play. Definitely woukd keep "1979", "Through The Eyes of Ruby" and the closer. (7.1) ★★★½

Too long and too varying in quality. 3 stars

2 hours plus of hard rock by a band who you’re not familiar with seemed a pretty daunting task. However the lyrics and quality musicianship made it an interesting experience.

That’s a LOT of tracks, Billy

Absolutely insufferable voice to listen to. Quite decent instrumentals, but dear lord I am not going to listen to this mf whine for two hours Ynn

Not bad— kinda forgettable songs that fill up this long album though. A few of them are xrt standbys though which is a plus

Double albums rarely work. This album has some great songs on it but there are 28 tracks covering 2 hours, so there is lots of filler. An ode to no one is an example of that. This album had some beautiful moments. Mellon collie is a lovely instrumental and the album really kicks off with the fantastic tonight tonight. It was a strong opening but really dragged until track 14 take me down. Favourite song: tonight tonight. Least favourite: I was not a fan of zero or ode to no one. Album artwork: Creepy cover

Pretty good rock

This was a tough one for me to get through. Took me almost a week. Everything about it is fine. I’m a big lyric person though, and I can’t understand 90% of the shit Billy Corgan is saying. I’ve heard 1979 a dillion times, and I only just not realized that I don’t know the damn words.

50% slightly obnoxious, 50% slightly enjoyable 3/5

IT was OK. More melodic, but it doesn't have a good rocker like Cherub Rock.

Cool album. Awful vocalist.

Really didnt age well for me

Overall good songs. Some hit the mark a bit better than others. My only beef is that it’s a two hour long album…

I'd agree with the reviews calling this a masterpiece if Billy Morgan wasn't such a shit singer

Didn’t need to be a double album. Other than bullet with butterfly wings and 1979.. not as many memorable hits as the Siamese Dream

Highlights: Here is no why, Bullet with butterfly wings, Fuck you (An ode to no one), Galapogos, Porcelina of the vast oceans, Bodies, X.Y.U., By Starlight -Although I wouldn't listen to every song on its own again, I feel like every track is good in the context of the album, maybe besides Tales of a Scorched Earth -The album is WAY too long, to the point that I can't really listen to it in one sitting while staying fully focused. -The album has an almost perfect ratio of calmer and more agressive songs, maybe a bit too many slower songs at the end. -At first I found the vocals kind of screechy and annoying, but after a bit I ended up really enjoying them. -Lyrics get overly edgy at times, but that's not a huge problem, it's grunge after all. -Overall, its length really hurts its score, I feel like a lot could've been cut to make it significantly shorter and give it a couple extra points. Rating: 6.2/10

bruh mellon collie and the infinite sadness- 4 tonight tonight- 5 jellybelly- 4 zero- 6 here is no why- 4 bullet with butterfly wings- 4 or 5 to forgive-4 an ode to no one- 4 love- 4 cupid de locke- 5 or 6 galapogos- 4 muzzle- 4 porcelina of the vast oceans-3 take me down- 5 searching for someone who cares. favorite track- zero or cupid

How to rate Mellon Collie & The Infinite Double Album? There are some real standout tracks that I love. Then there are 18 to 20 more tracks that are fine at best. Lows don't quite fully outweigh the highs? But I'm not going to ever reach for this full album.

did not hold my attention for two hours but was less annoying than anticipated. 2.5

The opener was a Heavenly experience, then tonight tonight was so good, I repeated it like 10 times before moving on to the next song. The rest of the songs were just typical grunch until 1979 which was another fav of mine An album with great highs and just other bland songs

Pretty good but really dragged on

Too long

Too long

# Album Name: Mellon Collie & the infinite sadness (OG vinyl) # Artist: Smashing Pumpkins # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Side 1 & 2: Tonight tonight a song i remember from the 90s. I always enjoyed it if im honest. A very catchy song, good lyrics, great use of strings. Billys voice gets a bit whiney but its still a cracker. The drum beat suits the song to a T. This was the highlight of part 1 of the album for me. Which is a shame being so early on. The album (OG vinyl) started off very mellow. Acoustic driven. Then it hit "jellybelly" which turned it on its head and into more of a grunge sound. It was quite a 180 in sound and direction. I dont think it suited the flow of the album if im honest. The first disc followed this pattern flipping between an slower paced tune to a alt sound. Couple more decent songs on this part like 33, bodies and to forgive. Porcelina of vast ocean. Overall, lots of alright songs with one cracker but a strange mix of acoustic / alt / grunge. Not sure if it works that well for me. I had to take a break at this point. No way could i handle 2 hours in one sitting. Side 3 & 4: Bullet with butterfly wing, 1979, where boys fear to treat, we only come out at night and zero were the highlights of the 2nd side. Overall, this is a really long fucking album. Its the longest album ive ever heard. I found it quite infuriating. Why? Well because firstly, there is some genuinely good songs on here. Easily 5-6 that comes to mind straight away. But sadly there was just so many songs on the album which were average or should have been B-sides maybe. That plus the length brings the scoring down for me. If SP stripped most of the b-side material and kept the core songs from each album, maybe 10-12 tracks on the album, then this would have been a real classic. # Top Tunes: Tonight, tonight. Bullet with butterfly wing, 1979, where boys fear to treat, we only come out at night and zero were the highlights of the 2nd side. # Would I listen to it again? I wont listen to this in its entirety but i will come back to a streamlined playlist of my fav tracks off the album.

First song was awesome then got too heavy for my liking.

Enjoyable for the most part, a bit shouty for me elsewhere.

The most irritating voice of the 90s that somehow made it work. My respects for pulling it but not something I particularly enjoy

No way they got me listening to 2 hour long album good if you have a lot of free time

3.5 rounded down now why is this over two hours long….. docking points bc there was literally 0 reason for that whatsoever. get over urself highlights: zero, here is no why, cupid de locke, 1979, tales of a scorched earth (nov 1 2024)

Enjoyed
