Reviews (page 12 of 14)

They have great hooks, but that's pretty much it. I don't understand why "Mr. Brightside" was such a big hit. Plus, the lyrics are just weird at points, not something I expect from a US band.

I didn't think it was a bad album, but just not my thing. Still give it a 3 because I think it sounds good

Boring

Some great tracks, some stinkers. Don't know why, but the "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" always miffed me. Feel like they tried going too big in parts. Walk before you try running. The last track epitomises this. Don't fully get the hype tbh. 2.5*

I don't mind The Killers, but to be honest wouldn't say I'm a fan. Album has one or two good radio hits. Second half of the album fell flat in comparison to the first.

First half of this is just laced with the good stuff; hits that are lame as hell but still hold up. Overplay aside, there are some certified gems here. Second half lets this all down a bit, with kind of boring or forgettable or just kind of shit tracks. The Killers are such an interesting band. I think they have gone through waves of being considered cool, to lame, to cool again. This album is pretty imperfect but I think will only grow in its popularity among music purists as time goes on. It's simple, and it wears its influences of Floyd, Springsteen, and Queen right there for you. I can't explain why my favourite part of the whole album is that stupid goddamn 'I got soul but I'm not a soldier' chant... It's so stupid! But it's also amazing! It makes no sense! But it's got me singing along! A strong three stars. Fave track: All These Things That I've Done

# 58 : Some good catchy tunes, but no real substance. Easy listening. Mr Brightside

The hits are decent for popular music but the rest is invariably dull or repetitive by comparison. Their image was somewhat interesting, a Las Vegas Mormon wearing eyeliner with a faux English flare to his singing.

No favorites

The two big hits aside, I liked the first track and Change Your Mind.

Pretty fun indie rock 00s

Very much a tale of two albums. The first half incredibly good. The second half incredibly forgettable

Several great radio hits on this one that bring me back to mid 2000s.

Energetic, interesting, but kind of annoying. Something for a workout or a night out, but not something I would throw on regularly.

Solid early 00's pop rock. It has in energy what it lacks in sophistication.

This album is front loaded with a bunch of amazing Killers song (and ones that I often listen to!) but for some reason it doesn't impress me as much together as an album. It starts off so strong but the second half is honestly a snoozefest.

HS Nostalgia, fun and upbeat

Behind the drunken singalong big hits, some interesting homages to synthy 80s New Romantic posturing, albeit with a bit too much guitar for my liking. Also Brandon Flowers was hot. Reminds me of jumping up and down at misshapes on a Thursday night in the early 2000s. For the same vibe but better, prefer Ezra Furman, the Strokes or Franz Ferdinand

Starts strong. Some of it is good. Some of it is average or below. 72/100

It's alright. They sound very European for an American band. They remind me of Pulp and Editors at times. The songs are good enough to justify their popularity. Nothing annoying about any of them. Easy to listen to. A lot of the songs go in one ear and out the other. Favorite song: Somebody Told Me.

It’s Indie-Pop‘n‘Roll for me. Harmless but very well produced 2.6

Just not my style / couldn’t wait for it to be over. 2.5/5

It's not a good album but I can't say anything that bad about it. A few good songs a few boring songs. Mr Brightside hasn't survived being massively overplayed.

Feels like the big singles from Hot Fuss are quite a lot different from the rest of the (underwhelming) album, but they do some heavy lifting on their own tbf.

It was alright. Cant say much more about it.

This was decent. I liked it more than I expected to. The singles are still terrible, but maybe that's just because of oversaturation. Who knows. 2.75/5

Solid album, front heavy

Debut album released in 2004. You can’t ignore the heavy hitting singles on this album that justifies its popularity. The album does drift off beyond those tracks.

I never really got into The Killers despite one of my friends really being into them at their peak. This record doesn't move me much. They're just more of that early aughts nicked from the past vibe. It's hard to see what the fuss is about.

actually ok

Good album. Probably the only album by The Killers that I really like. I would give it 4 stars, but it kinda fades and is probably just too long.

The Killers are rock music for people that don't necessarily love rock music. And that's fine, but I've never been the type to fall hard for this album. It's not horrible, but I'll take hearing a single every now and then over trying to trudge through an entire Killers album.

Full of bops but overplayed :/

This album is an amazing example of someone blasting out of the gates on their first record and never really capturing it again. First 5 songs are very strong, some of the album tracks are interesting, 'Everything Will Be Alright' is a stand out. Between a very high 2 and a low 3, scrapes a 3

Mr Brightside is a hit. Somebody told me is alright. Rest of the album was pretty forgettable. No wonder I only knew the singles.

Interessante. Bellissima 'Somebody told me'

73 of 1001 The Killers - Hot Fuss Rating : 3/5 Favorite Track : Somebody Told Me Went to read up a bit more on this and find that it has been removed form later editions of this album list. That is disappointing. I really enjoyed this. Went in expecting some heavy punk stuff that could be hit or miss but was surprised. This is one I'll go back to. Good tunes.

AJ: First 5 songs are great. Do not need the rest. At all. Jenny opener is top notch. Cat: I never really cared for the two songs I knew were the Killers (somebody told me and me bright side). I do really like all the things I’ve done and didn’t know it was them! They have a cool sound. Very 80s. They’re alright

Pretty standard

Not bad, bit overrated

Loved the dancier stuff like the singles, but their slow songs weren’t for me.

Yeah The Killers is never really my thing but growing up this brings a lot of memories.

It's very close to being a 4. The first 4 tracks of the album are all amazing, then the middle is fine but nothing amazing and then it picks back up at the end. With the exception of Everything Will Be Alright that one I don't really care about.

I never really bought into The Killers. They seemed way too polished and manufactured, and sounded just like every other garage/dance type bands coming out in the 2000s it was hard to tell them apart from everyone else. Listening to this now, it is slightly better than I remember, but most of my initial criticisms still hold. I get that this was like, the longest charting album ever in the UK or something, but popularity doesn't mean it's good art. I mean, I'd rather listen to this than plenty of other things, but that's a pretty low bar.

Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Somebody Told Me, On Top and Believe Me, Natalie. I’ve heard some of these before and some are good and a lot of them are bleh. Generic pop rock from the early 2000’s which technically isn’t a bad thing because it’s mostly catchy.

smile like you mean it is a 5, jenny was a friend of mine was good. it's front loaded. it falls off and becomes energetic wilco after the first few songs.

Contains nearly the most iconic song of the 2000s, this makes a pretty good album to support that.

Solid alt rock record. A little too bubbly for my taste but still good. It feels a little safe which is not something I am personally looking for in alt rock. I think my favorite tracks were "Mr. Brightside", "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine", "Believe Me Natalie" and "Somebody Told Me". It is a pretty listenable album but I feel like a lot of the tracks are just a little neutral and don't stand out. I would give it a 7/10.

Mr who

Lots of angst on this one. The hits on here are “killer” bum bum tsss.

feels very weird listening to mr brightside while not in a provincial town pub in saturday night mode, you know where they turn some lights off , play the music louder and clear some tables for a 'dancefloor'. this album has done a full roller coaster of going form being eagerly anticipated cool album to the wedding DJ classic shunned by anyone with an ounce of musical taste. obviously i count myself in that category as my musical taste is superior to anyone else alive so these days i wouldn't choose to listen to this album but being made to i realise how steeped in nostalgia those first 5 tracks are for me as they take me back to my heyday when you couldn't move for indie clubs and in said indie clubs you would probably hear all of the first 5 tracks each night. although i will have listened to the album back in the day i have absolutely no recollection of the second half. it must have been one of those that got turned off as soon as it hit the shit half. who would have guessed hot fuss would be the album to make me waffle on like this? maybe its because its friday afternoon and i'm winding down for the weekend.

First 5 songs are big, then it completely nose dives into oblivion. I think they had about 3 more songs in the rest of the 20 career. I genuinely can't believe they're still considered MASSIVE. Just an 00s indie band, no better than Maximo Park or The View.

This was a lot better than I was expecting. I liked the first song and “Believe Me Natalie”. Don’t really like the vocals though.

I don’t hate The Killers, I just hate “Mr. Brightside”

There’s definitely more to this album than Mr.Brightside and Somebody Told Me. It was better than I was expecting and pretty good, but I didn’t hear anything new or wildly creative.

Amazing how many of these songs i knew almost by heart

Between 3 and 4

Couple bangers lol

There's always room in one's musical diet for records like this ... edgy, stylish, glittery and not afraid a pop hook or silly lyric in the service of cool. "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll," indeed!

Loved this album

A lot of well-known, decent songs. Just so overplayed in the naughties!

Outside of the classics the rest of the album feels a bit lackluster tbh

Me. brightside is the only song I still genuinely enjoy, besides that it really bored me, maybe I’m not an dramatic teen anymore or maybe I just grew out of it…

The killes is probably the best American college rock band.

I liked this album when it came out with its retro-80’s sound. It has gotten a lot of undeserved hatred recently.

Vuosi 2004 musiikkina. Toimii. Mutta aika stadion

To me this is more nostalgia than quality. A decent enough pop album, but nothing extraordinary.

Good, probably heard all the songs before but not the full album, good but felt overly familiar

Probably a solid 3.5 stars. I definitely liked this more back in the day, and I’ll be curious as to how well the albums of the noughts fare. Not well, I presume.

I like this. Lots of hits.

Comme tous les gens de mon âge, j’ai beaucoup entendu Somebody Told Me, mais le groupe ne m’a jamais captivée. Cette écoute a confirmé que je n’accroche tout simplement pas, je ne saurais expliquer pourquoi

This album triggered my tinnitus so badly after two songs that for the first time in 425 albums, I tapped out. I know I'm not missing much. The Killers emerged in the early 00's bland reawakening of pop rock along with Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand. Had it not been for the arena popular Mr Brightside, The Killers would be a budget bin selection like the other two. But, it is and Hot Fuss is still deemed a 'Must Listen' and whether it truly is or not for this list, when it comes to Tinnitus sufferers, it is not. So if you dear listener come across this review, please check your volume and protect your ears, unless you want to not listen to music that you do and do not enjoy. 3/5.

Some great songs but many forgettable ones. Every song sounds kind of the same. 3.5/5

No way this is a must listen album. The singles will be played for many years and that is all that is worth listening to.

3 or 4 great great songs but the rest is filler. Could have been an amazing album but it’s better than average.

I noticed that I liked the less popular songs on the album.

Sonido muy sólido en general, con algunos clásicos y otros buenos temas. Volvería a repasarlo

Going in with a neutral mind. I promise. First song sounds insane recording wise for some reason to me, but then it just goes into hit after hit and totally didn’t even realize all these were from one record. Pleasant surprise to listen all the way through :-)

Listed as p916 in my edition of the book but! p916 has K.I.A by Mila! 2004. 3 stars. Oddly soulless pop-rock. Plenty of cracking tunes, and I feel I should like it more than I do, but Brandon Flowers voice puts me off. "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier". Yeah, and I've got ham, but I'm not a hamster.

I straight up HATED this album when it came out, but after not hearing it for almost 20 years(??? I'm old), it's not too bad. I think I mostly hated the cringe-y lyrics? Those are still pretty cringe-y, but I've learned to embrace cringe over the years, so it's less of a deal breaker now. Anyway, it was overplayed as hell for what it is, but it's not bad. The first 4 songs are damn good, the rest is alright. Solid 3.5 (rounded down as per protocol).

Some solid singles

I don't really see what sets this album apart from the myriad of other '80s-influenced pop-punk albums that came along in the early 00s. Yes, there are hooks and singles that make you sit up and take notice temporarily but for the most part, it's just formulaic drivel for the masses. When a pop-punk-dance album just drones unnoticed in the background, it's time to move on.

Ik vroeg om iets stevigers na Dusty Springfield en dit is precies stevig genoeg. Lollige festivalpopmuziek, een aantal nummers komen bekend voor, wat jaren 80-tonen, het klinkt allemaal prima.

Wait a second, this is actually pretty good. I thought The Killers were a sort of Imagine Dragons-ish band, but this is just some solid 00s rock. It's nothing mindblowing and "Mr Brightside" is still the best song here, but I still enjoyed this.

3.7 - These guys churned out a handful of hits and it’s impressive to hear those back to back on here. Respectable hard rock - energetic and crowd-pleasing. Last two tracks are a little trippier than the rest and worth a listen.

Pretty nice album! Had some bangers on there for sure, like Mr. Brightside obviously (gotta love that single-note melody), but sadly there wasn't enough variation or innovation for me to give it anything above three stars, but I still enjoyed it.

Didn't really work for me - seemed like a pastiche of Interpol and other groups

Good but repetitive

Someone gave me this CD thinking I would like it. I listened to it a bit and, though some of the tunes appealed to me, the album was never a favorite and now it just seems tired.

First five tunes are HUGE! Make no mistake they are incendiary bangers! Not a stinker among them! Album dips for tracks 6, definitely 7 and 8 is forgettable to be honest. Doesn’t really pick back up till the finale of ‘Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll’. Flowers knows his way around a tune, the band are sharp and there is a genuine reason why The Killers built such a following! However, this album is half killer, half filler so only the three star average here.

A fair, punchy, interesting pop rock album from my early teenage years. Elements of glam, and a mysterious corny cool that comes from that slightly seemy, tacky, evangelical Las Vegas world from which the Killers emerge. The lyrics are sometimes laughably fucking stupid. So much so, that I remember binning the album off at 13. Nevertheless it's okay. Wouldn't put it in my 1001 list though

Though I don't listen to them, I was surprised at just how many songs on this album I was familiar with. Decent album. Not something I'd reach for on my own to listen to, but not something I'd turn my nose up at if it was playing. More of a 3.5 for this one.

A solid entry in the hard alternative rock genre. The vocals have limited range and grow less tolerable when they try to push those boundaries, the lyrics are superficially clever but lack depth, and the mixing has that Loudness Wars issue - it only sounds good at (tom my old man ears) excessive volume. Still I didn't hate it by any means.

I'm definitely familiar with the hits, but I don't think I ever sat down and just listened to this album I've always enjoyed them though. It does seem like they got popular and then became a meme to shit on a little bit from the "cool kids", I think a lot of people have come back around and realized that they aren't bad.

Good album, but a lot of it sounded the same.

A few good songs, but it’s a bit samey. Best songs are on the front half. It’s nothing special but is still decent as an album

Lots of songs you know. The vocal style that is so identifiable becomes grating over the course of an album. It feels almost tuneless. A kind of "yelling over the top of" with no noticeable variation.

Un bon Album rock, c'est très représentatif des années 2000 et il contient beaucoup de hit qui ont beacoup joué à la radio. 3.85.

This is a pretty fine post punk record. Very solid Side A but B slips up. I’ll give them kudos for having an original sound and good energy.

It was not annoying, but left me nothing

Decent.

I've heard the two singles a thousand times and I didn't think the other tracks were anything special.

Oh how I love the ridiculously disproportionate weight of this debut. The worst part is that the critiques you read are largely true; Yet Hot Fuss comes back with high after ridiculous high. It stands alone, can't really compare to its influences, even. But hey, it's the record that launched the Killers, and remains an important entry in an always-cozy lineup.

Cue album. A 13-year-old awakens. It’s 2004 and she’s sensitive, angry, and dabbling in a bit of emo and indie. Ohhh how that teen dances to the first few songs of this album, in a state of adolescent ecstasy. But around track 5, the trance shatters. A 31-year-old awakens. It’s 2022 and she hates “indie rock and roll.” …yeah overall feels kinda basic, but there are a few karaoke slappers that I still like. 3 stars.

Es un disco con canciones efectivas. Por una cuestión generacional, supongo, me cansa un poco la escucha entera. Pero está muy bien

An apt comparison would be to liken The Killers to Pearl Jam and The Strokes to Nirvana. Honestly, they both sound the same to me (The Killers and Strokes, which means I don't buy the Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana connection). Maybe we're not far enough away, but this holds up well, and Mr. Brightside is destined to become a rock classic if it isn't one already. The hits are fucking bangers. But I'll take Pearl Jam any day over this. And Nirvana. In ten years, classic rock radio stations will play Mr. Brightside and Smile Like You Mean It, followed by Jeremy and Come As You Are. And we'll all shrug.

never listened the whole way through but its a classic!!! smile like u mean it is 10/10 everything after on top is like 5 or 6/10 tho

This is OK. I thought it was overrated when released and have not changed my mind in the interim. Radio friendly style over substance.

Never been a Killers fan. I don't really like the vocal effects that are used on this album. A few good songs, but overall, just ok.

Didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would. Never listened to any of it other than the single tracks before. Strong opening and closing tracks, felt a bit same-ey towards the latter half. Not a huge fan of the lyricism, often feels lazy and needlessly abstract. The songwriting is a shame as the whole band seems very talented musically.

From the first note to the last, Hot Fuss commands one's attention, maintaining its grip for eternity with a song that, to this day, is The Killers' signature song. That doesn't mean that every other song is lacking, with Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Somebody Told Me and All These Things That I've Done being highlights in particular. Hot Fuss was an album that came at a formative yet increasingly dimly lit time and gave us one more band to take notice of. Favorites: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me, All These Things That I've Done, Believe Me Natalie, Midnight Show, Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll.

Some nice catchy pop/rock tunes here. I think some are familiar to me but I don't trust my memory. I wasn't pulled in so much that I feel interested in listening to this album again but it's decent work.

Set stun to mild.

Yet another ex-1001 album! http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I'd listen to this album when it came out, but now you realise it's like boiling a frog, you enjoy it, think it's fine, by the end it's too late, you've become a cultural zombie, what am I doing with my life?! With the bigger hits, though lyrically devoid, I'd still enjoy a good karaoke night with them. 2.5

What’s up with that last song?

Polished indie sleaze. The hits are total bangers, but the rest is mediocre.

God this album is nostalgic!!! Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me are finger licking good when not forced down your throat!! The overall sound of the album is reminiscent of the pop songs that get put on DDR, they love the mic effect on the lead singer's voice lol Solidly decent. I guess we could call it Indie Rock and Roll, though I feel that label is a bit generic

My god, the sonic chokehold this album had on my high school in 2004, let me tell you! Mr. Brightside in particular, there was something so gloriously melodramatic about that song that perfectly ensnared the overactive imagination of every angsty teen with an unrequited crush. I never got into it, but the singles are catchy and I somehow know all the words. The only thing I couldn't buy into was Brandon Flowers's strange affected way of singing, like he's trying to pass himself off as British? What is that? Why does he sing that way?

A bit of a meh here, some decent songs, some ok ones, some stinkers.

Good stadium rock

Sounds like the 80s are back on this one. I usually think of Duran Duran, but one of the songs started out a bit like The Smiths. Killers songs brighter and poppier than the influences. Front-loaded with hits, very weak end. The beginning of ‘Jenny was a Friend of Mine’ reminds me of ‘Friends of Mine’ by Duran Duran. I enjoy both songs. “Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year” is a lyric I always have to think about a little bit before I figure out what he’s saying. Kind of a musical word problem. I have no idea what “…I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier” is supposed to mean but it’s fun to sing.

I'm not sure what to make of this album. Throughout, it was like a splinter in my mind trying to figure out who The Killers reminded me of. I don't want to call it derivative — I mean, maybe it is — but it was more of an immediate connection to something I couldn't define. And it sounds good. Clearly this is a band that goes for big production. Big sounds. The one tune, "Somebody Told Me," reminded me of Blur's "Girls & Boys," and truth be told, I liked The Killers tune a bit more because it didn't hammer on that same lyric/chorus past the point of clever. But on the whole, the songwriting and production started melting into one another, and it began to be difficult to tell one track from the next. Certainly repeated listens and more familiarity would likely remedy that, but I wasn't enamored enough to want to dig deeper, at least not immediately. I'd be more inclined to delve into Blur's catalog, thanks for asking. So yeah. 3 it is.

Couple great songs. 3/5

It's weird how this is one of the top selling christian albums of all times.

Pretty good stuff. A little repetitive, but some nice hits. Not bad at all.

Great songs overall, some exchangeable - typical killers album

Probably the first time in my life I've actually put Mr Brightside on. I've never really liked the Killers and always found them the ultimate mum band. This hasn't really changed my opinion. I guess it's not bad as such, I just don't care.

-S Tier- ***n/a*** -A Tier- Jenny Was a Friend of Mine -B Tier- Mr. Brightside Somebody Told Me Andy, You’re a Star On Top Midnight Show -C Tier- Smile Like You Mean It All These Things That I’ve Done Change Your Mind Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll -D Tier- Believe Me, Nataliie Everything Will Be Alright AVG SCORE: 2.9 / 5 - - - Bias Disclosure: I’ve never particularly cared for The Killers. Flowers’ voice has always been too emo for my taste, and their insistence on processing his vocals so often with that stupid reverb/echo/whatever just rubs me wrong. I’ve also never understood the love affair with “Mr. Brightside.” All this considered, this isn’t a bad album. There may not be any mind-blowing songs, but there are also aren’t dumpster fires. Just a nice, inoffensive, middle-of-the-road album.

It was alright, better than what I was expecting.

The album is alright. It is carried by Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. Without those songs this album would be lower. The rest of the album is just ok. I had never listened to the entire album before and I don't see myself listening to it again.

alright album, 6/10

Some good tunes on this

Also boring. Everything is boring

Hit of nostalgia

Was wrestling to change a toilet seat whilst listening so potentially have associated some pretty shitty vibes, but I still really enjoyed it!

Better than expected but not amazing

very good

I’m not sure if I’m rating the album or my reaction to the album. I have a checkered past with the Killers, but this time it was fun to just sing along with all the songs.

Catchy Alt/Indie rock album with a big, resonant sound. Brandon Flowers' glam-tinged, dramatic vocal really sells it. Loses steam on the back half. Fave Songs: Mr. Brightside, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, All These Things That I've Done, Somebody Told Me, Change Your Mind

Couple of good hits and at least 2 new awesome songs I didn't know. Easy to listen and mostly keeps a similar noisy atmosphere all trough.

Unlike with The Who and Nirvana, I am very sure the popular songs off this one are the actual good ones lol. Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me are A-OK, the rest may be safely left in the past

There’s plenty of songs off this album you recognize, but past those ones, I found the album a little bland and repetitive. I understand The Killers have a style, like all bands, but this album just doesn’t do it for me. Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine is my all time fav off the album, though.

It was a good album to walk the dog to yesterday morning!

olha cara é legalzinho mas ou pouco genérico e meio fds. As músicas são legais de ouvir no momento mas n sei se é algo q eu salvaria pra ver dnv.

It's an album. I don't get this one. It feels to radio-y for my enjoyment. I only enjoyed the two last tracks, but that might be because I wanted the album to end.

A bit flash, but pretty tight and rocking.

Pop-rock de principios de siglo XXI más cercano al rock, con buenas melodías, pero al que le ha faltado algo de punch

was ok, too radio friendly for my liking

Obviously frontloaded with the hits, but the rest of it isn't bad, and the hits were hits for good reasons.

Fun dance rock. Lots of four on the flood and funky bass. Not huge in all the synths. Not mind blowing but was made with purpose

Fake British accent aside, a fun collection of catchy pop-rock singles. All These Things that I've Done is the standout.

Cocktail recipe: 1 part Strokes 1 part Interpol/Turn on the Bright Lights 1 part stadium-anthem U2 spritz with Robert Smith & The Cure for drama and carbonation garnish with synths and good looks This was actually better than I remember, but it still feels derivative and manufactured. Well done, but not for me. Good Lord, I hated the "Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll" the lyrics the sentiment the AUTOTUNE, so much that I'm tempted to call this a 2. 2.5/5, planned on begrudgingly rounded up, but when faced with the decision of clicking the stars, rounded down

1. Jenny ⭐️ 2. Mr Brightside ⭐️ 3. Smile Like you Mean it: ⭐️ 4. Somebody Told me: ⭐️ 5. All These Things 6. Andy you’re a star ❌ 7. On Top 8. Change Your Mind 9. Believe Me Natalie 10. Midnight Snow 11. Everything Will be alright ❌ 12. Glamorous Indie ❌

The hits are hits, but even the big ones have flaws (maybe, baby, please?) but not enough in the rest of the tracklist to grab my attention. Flowers has quite the limited vocal range and while I enjoy some nice new wave / alt voices in his range he almost never gets close to the frantic performance of Mr Brightside. ”When you were young” from a later release is the type of energy I think he should be bringing. This is mostly just boring.

Hints of U2 cannot save it from the MTV house party vibe.

Nice, I enjoyed hearing the hits. Good to put them in context

Really hate The Killers

I remember once reading someone’s assessment that the worst rock and roll songs are the ones with “rock and roll” in the title, and I now believe that goes double for “indie rock and roll”.

This was a real struggle. In some ways I hear their influences in the music and feel like this album is partially a tragedy of the era it was recorded. What if they had put down the big guitar sound and leaned more into like older-Cure types sounds. Maybe the songs would have come out better. Another thing I just couldn't ignore this listen is how just outrageously incel the lyrics are for the majority of the album. Things outside of the actual listen that affect my rating: I love Richard Kelly's Southland Tales which gives this strange feeling of a dark and insane mirror version of the early aughts. It features a full blown choreographed scene featuring 'All These Things That I've Done' and it was so bizarre and fun that it makes me enjoy the song more. I think it's the most redeemable song on here. Lastly, the thing that makes it the hardest to take seriously is that I was just a bit too old for this album when it first was released. I was seeing a lot of 13/14 year old boys trying adroitly to assemble their identities with a dark wash denim / vest combo. I don't even know who the collateral was in this situation, the album or the kids. This is the perfect album for a a young teen boy to get dumped over AOL instant messenger to in 2004.

Not really my vibe. 6/10

A couple of hits. Nothing else stood out to me.

Heavy handed pop

Look, there are a few catchy pop-rock tracks on here. The problem is that I have been continuously blugeoned with them at every party, night out, or open mic night since I was 15 until they have lost all meaning. I'm getting flashbacks of everyone having to pretend, pissed, at 2am that they are ecstatic at hearing Mr Brightside for the 10,000th time. Sitting down and listening to this album critically also allows me to add shite production quality to the list of sins. It's the "Let's make a loud noise" school of music production, completely negating any chance of hearing any instruments in detail. Like a lot of popular music from this era, I feel like the extremely low bar at the time has artificially elevated some very mediocre bands. The killers are the absolute epitome of this. The only reason this isn't a 1 is because they unfortunately formed a significant part of the soundtrack to my teenage years.

soooooo generisch

I think I have no grown enough as a person to give this a proper go. I actually thought the kids would be rather pumped on this, but the just wandered off. So what do I think? When it comes down to it, we are here to rate albums. And a couple of massive singles an album does not make.

i wish i liked this one more. i feel there are two great songs here and some others that despite being competent indie rock songs, felt not that special compared to other groups. But comparison is the thief of joy, i guess

You guys probably won't rate this very highly, and a couple of these songs have been played to death obviously, but I feel some level of primal attachment to this band as being my generation's music. I think there was a bit of a renaissance in pop music in the 2000s and early 2010s, in that, chart topping music was better on average than the 2020s, and even maybe the 80s and 90s. They are no Passion Pit or Phoenix, but I think The Killers fit somewhere within that movement, and I appreciate them for that. There was nothing here that absolutely blew me away, and I think their stuff is honestly geared towards women. But this music isn't that bad to me. maybe just a little dated, overplayed, and cliche, but not bad. Strong two to a light three for context/ generational attachments

Loud, but not very interesting. Seems like maybe it *should* be good (has, in a superficial sense, all the necessary - or at least sufficient - elements?) - but isn't? Don't really like the singer's voice, either (loud, but not very musical), which is never good. The music almost seems like pop music created by AI - a little soulless (2 days in a row for that word, lol), or by the numbers, or something? I don't quite hate it, but it's forgettable and not very satisfying or catchy; guess I'll go with a low 2 (though 1 is tempting).

3 good songs and a lot of filler "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine" has one of the most lackluster synth parts that I've ever heard, towards the end. And the average quality of the arrangements is not much higher I imagine Millenial parents rocking out to this in their soulless subdivisions, or hearing it in the drug store, which is fitting because of the band's U2 inspirations. Just like their predecessors, their sound fits right into the glazed-over mindset so conducive for consumption

Not my taste

Occasionally decent songwriting, but marred with poor production and fluff. A couple songs that are fun enough but don't stand under any real scrutiny.

Ok. Sort of not feeling this but of Punk rock?

Stort 2-tal

*41 Det er bare ret cringe.

Ah, the mid-2000s. A time when most of my music consumption was via Fuse and MTV2. And the Killers were ubiquitous on these channels, leading my sister and me to flip from one to the other (or, god forbid, VH1) because we did not need to see those videos again for the seventh time today, thank you. "Mr. Brightside" currently being hailed as a classic is fascinating to me, but with the benefit of time and the lack of having it forced on me hourly, I can better appreciate it. "Somebody Told Me," upon this listen, is the superior single though. I couldn't remember "All These Things That I've Done" until the really bad line "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" repeated too many times. With this being my first, and most probably last, listen to this album as a whole, the best tracks were "On Top" and "Believe Me Natalie." None of this is throw-my-headphones-across-the-room bad, I just don't need to listen to it again. My favorite Killers song remains their cover of "Shadowplay."

Not for me

Evocative of a nice generic American strip mall.

Ce band-là est l'exemple parfait de pourquoi c'est un peu overraté d'haïr U2. Infect. 1.5 étoiles

Gosh I like the singalong ones in this album but the collective is dull af

There are some strong songs on this album, but it doesn't rise above albums in its peer category (Interpol, Strokes, Wombats, early Foals). I also prefer my post-pop punk to be more rock and less pop. That lands this album at 2

another of those UBNHOBs: Unknown Bands that I Never Heard Of Before. No better off for listening, nor did I miss anything.

But same not really arresting, sufficient but not brilliant.

Nothing grabs me. It's just mediocre rock.

I quite like some of The Killers’ songs, but overall I don’t like this album. Two stars...

Yyy tiene temas buenos pero no me gusta este rock indie tirando a pesado

The kids these days LOVE Mr. Brightside

Likes more than I expected

The non-singles are really weak. I never thought I'd be begging for Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. All These Things I've Done is still good though.

Now... I couldn't care less for this kind of music. A very popish, mainstream rock which, in fact, is indie (what a surprise!). Maybe one of the blandest genre ever. But, here we are. The album has, at least some nicer songs, and one I liked a bit. So, I'll give it an "it's not good neither bad, just something in between". And, in fact, this album is pretty mid. I wouldn't neither say it's bad bad, but it's just a collection of uninteresting and insipid tunes that are carried by some strange kind of stadium sound. So, have I liked it? No. Have I enjoyed listening to it? I wouldn't say so, but it hasn't been a disgusting or boring experience. Would I listen to it again? Of course not! But, even though, it's not that bad. It is merely an album that feels very background-ish. I can't find it thrilling in any sense.

Pas mon style de rock qui casse un peu la tête

Album 4 - the purpose of this is to be exposed to music you might not otherwise listen to right? I listened, liked one, but couldn’t say I want to re listen to the rest. The one leads to the 2 rating.

meh. i guess kinda iconic but like why does the drums got to be disco so often when like that's not right with the rest of the instrumentation

Wow, this album has a seriously crazy dip in quality during the second half. The first half has some bangers, such as Mr Brightside, Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, and Somebody Told Me, but beyond track five, it takes a pretty significant dip, and I struggled to really enjoy any of the songs beyond them being catchy, generic rock songs one might hear in a B-movie or at a wedding. Some of the songs are seriously too long - even the good ones are sometimes overshadowed by this. Believe Me Natalie is lowkey painful. All These Things I've Done is pretty awesome until 'I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier' is chanted on repeat. Each song seems to have one serious downfall. Somebody Told Me is definitely the best song. The worst are Smile Like You Mean It, On Top, and Believe Me Natalie. But you know what, I thought Everything Will Be Alright was quite interesting.

Clásico de mi adolescencia, define todo el estilo de the killers, pero entendí porque no es de mis favoritos

proto- twenty one pilots im sorry im sorry A few nice songs though definetly gets better as it goes along

Synth-pop light rock isn't really my thing. I don't understand the popularity or the sales of this record. It's just... disposable. There's people who like that... just look at the state of the music industry since the 90's... but I'm not one of them.

not for me the lyrics were uncreative and forced, his voice is annoying, and overall just not my fav

Having thought I didn't know The Killers it turns out I have heard quite a lot of this album. Can't say it will be one I'll deliberately go back to. Power ballard rock isn't it?

#320/1001. A) music critics who put together this book got older and wanted to stay in their comfort zone, picking only albums and bands which play out safe and sound like all the music before. B) no good and innovative music has been made post year 2000. I vote for A, at least in this case.

boyfriend with mommy issues album of all time. I personally think there's maybe two or three listenable songs on this thing.

Never much liked these guys. Probably the vocals. Not enough originality. Too comercial. And a stupid fucking name… The Killers? Dumb.

Only 3 good songs for me, is my first time than I hear a complete album from this band.

Too noisy, too repetitive, too monotonous. I got really exhausted listening to this. Pour ears of mine

Kind of ok

It's through no fault of their own that I'm giving The Killers this score. From a distance there are some fairly good pop rock songs in the mix. But there are some songs (Mr Brightside) that make me want to blow my brains out, as though it is some form of repetitive action torture, I have heard this song against my will every time I have set foot in a bar in the UK. Being given this album on a Monday morning whilst struggling through a hangover was the icing on the cake for this song and my sanity

Mainly trash. A lot of songs about nothing sung with insincere conviction. For instance, Flowers gives a lot of gravitas to 'I've got soul but I'm not a soldier', that's not a good line, why would anyone think they are mutually exclusive things. As Bill Bailey remarked, 'I've got ham but I'm not a hamster'. Mr Brightside is terrible. And we Brits for some reason have made it an unofficial national anthem, along with Sweet Caroline, two truly atrocious American anthems. Mr B also massively rips off Bowie's Queen Bitch. I don't mind Jenny and Somebody Told Me. It's not all awful, but the album as a whole is a bit lame and lacks effort.

Not really my style. I find that it sparks nostalgia for some people, but I'm too young for that. I also get kind of an "artificial" feeling with this album. It sound really tampered with and I like my alternative music more raw. Also, very few songs actually pop out, it all sounds the same and is plain boring. I've heard more boring stuff though and the energy is there, so it gets 2/5

++: Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Mr. Brightside, Andy, You're a Star, Everything Will Be Alright +: All These Things That I've Done, On Top, Believe Me Natalie +-: Smile Like You Mean It, Change Your Mind, Midnight Show -: Somebody Told Me 5,5/10

They have all the right moves for a modern indie rock band, but I find them unbelievable. There’s no real soul and I’m not convinced they really had anything to say.

The odd numbered tracks often have interesting production bits and are okay; the even numbered tracks all sound like outtakes from a Strokes album. It’s pretty harmless, if a little self-indulgent.

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Alright - Jenny is a great opener. Then Mr. Brightside might be alright but it's impossible to say because I have heard it so much. Annoying now. The rest is pretty good indie rock with some very good synth touches. My main complaint is that it can be a bit repetitive.

First 5 songs are okay, at least fun and high energy. Has some cool bass lines, but the vocals sound really over produced to me. I think the songwriting is weak. Most of the songs are soulless. I would add a couple songs to a playlist but not an album I would add to my collection. Definitely not something I must hear before I die.

Honestly, I just don't care. I've heard the singles and it's not an album I really want to put anymore time into

I get why this album is on the list, but I would be happy to never hear Mr. Brightside again.

Good album.

Oh my god I hate his voice so fucking much. When he isn't singing it rocks though. 2 stars

This was a huge success back in 2004 - the whole first side of the record was all singles. I'm not a huge fan of his voice or the lyrics, too whiney, but the music is very catchy. The music is all very earnest, but a little too calculated, lots of retro sounding keyboards - this was their debut and they were aiming for a huge impression. I'd like to give this a 3 or a 4 even, but I can't get past the singer's delivery.

Has a few hits, but the album overall is a dud. A lot of Pop Rock albums from the 2000s suffer from this, actually.

2 good songs and a bunch of junk

no es algo que me pondria a escuchar la voz se me hace exagerada

Inneholder en av historiens mest irriterende sanger. Det blir NEJ

When I heard the first song I thought I had found one of my favorite albums... But then I had the impression of listening to the same song over and over. I got completely bored by the end of it. Also, are we going to talk about how problematic the lyrics of some songs are?

I think it must be impossible not to be aware of tracks 2-5 on this album, as ubiquitous as they were at the time and largely still are. Unfortunately that did little for me; I threw The Killers into the same pool as the rest of the indie landfill of the time. I’ll admit that they’re better than that and can write a catchy tune but although they may have crawled out of that pit in the subsequent years, i still find them a little on the vapid side. The album is also spectacularly front -loaded with the back side being very forgettable. I get why people like them, it’s just not for me.

If Mr. Brightside isn't on this album, does it make the 1001 list at all?

I try to keep an open mind and face my persona biases. As soon as I opened the link today and was faced with The Killers, I had an immediate ick. I’ve never liked any of their singles. All of which were overplayed in the clubs I hit up during my 20s. These tracks ended up in Guitar Hero. I was forced to play through them to level up. Despite confronting those biases, I’ve come to the conclusion that I still don’t like The Killers and I didn’t need to listen to this record before I died. 2/5 Please never play Mr Brightside within my earshot

Kind of the corniest guy ever. Somebody told me and mr brightside are acc good tho

Kills me to say this but I really did not enjoy the album.

barely ok album, but the ironic thing is that the most popular "mr. brightside" is my most hated one. other songs like "smile like you mean it", "somebody told me", "andy, you're a star" are good, others are a bit boring. also the singer's voice gets annoying really quick. 2

11/02/2026 *1. jenny was a friend of mine - liking all the electronic noises at the start. bassline is really nice. like the chorus. 2. mr. brightside - obviously know this one. going into it, it's overplayed and just alright. similar to how i feel about seven nation army. bit too emo/indie/very 2000s and it's now a bit dated and overplayed.... the kindof song that would play in a car advert. 3. smile like you mean it - all of these songs sound alright, but are just indie pop-rock in the worst way possible... good background music and the instruments are well played, but it's just lacking something. not mad on the lyrics either. 4. somebody told me - also know this one. it's alright. *5. all these things that i've done - quieter... more eerie... he's started singing again.... it's not bad, just bland. reminds me of that keane song in the m&s christmas advert years ago. not massive on the chanting bit, but the rest of it sounds nice. 6. andy, you're a star - remember listening to this one at some point as a kid, but cannot remember what it sounds like at all. alright. not much to say about this album. like the synths. 7. on top - what is this intro. all of these songs are melding into each other. lyrics are getting more obviously annoying. 8. change your mind - every indie band in the last ten years sounds like this song. not a fan. it's alright i guess. definitely listenable, but so bland. 9. believe me natalie - like the drums at the start. all the songs sound the same and it's not really my thing lol. 10. midnight show - lyrics are a bit weird.... *11. everything will be alright - liking the descending intro.... more spacey... still wouldn't consciously listen to this, but enjoying it more than any of the other songs (except maybe the first). four minutes in and it's going on a bit now. 12. glamorous indie rock & roll - not looking forward to this one from the title. i do not need indie rock and roll. bassline is nice. liking the guitar in the chorus more than the rest of the album. very glad this is over. 2000s indie pop-rock is not for me and the killers is no exception! sounded alright, but sooooooooo mind-numbingly bland that i wouldn't choose to listen to any of these songs again. no nostalgia for this. begging for a properly good album tomorrow.........

mr brightside is so wedding/karaoke coded for me. still the best song on the album

it was a decent palate cleanser, but i genuinely had to force myself through this. im just not a fan when rock music has those "because tonight will be the night that i will fall for you" vocals. 4/10, decent but will not listen again.

Synth, post punk, and new wave. I don't think I need to say anything more to justify the rating.

Rock, 2004 -> 2

Not a big fan

Good so far. I’ve realized I’ve heard some of these songs before🙃 ⭐️⭐️ /5

I was surprised by how many songs on here I’d heard previously without being aware. It’s good for what it is, but ultimately it’s all pretty bland and middle-of-the-road.

These are classics of the 2000s, good delivery, great guitars riffs, but so cheesy overall. The sound is so compressed it fails to stick with me.

A group of lads in Wrangler straight-cut jeans, brown leather shoes and white checked shirts, tucked in, with too many of the top buttons opened, jumping around the dancefloor of a soulless nightclub, sloshing their pints of cider and Heineken around the place. That's the image you get when you hear Mr. Brightside or Somebody Told Me. Absolute rubbish. It's mundane, over-produced swill that is presenting itself as some sort of artistic masterpiece. "Somebody told me you had a boyfriend / Who looked like a girlfriend / That I had in February of last year / It's not confidential, I've got potential / A rushing, rushing around." Move over Bob Dylan, give Brandon Flowers that Nobel Prize for literature. The songs on paper shouldn't elicit such intense feelings of hatred in me. If anything, they should mean very little to me, because the whole album, and the whole discography of The Killers is mundane, beige and uninteresting. But, there's just something about the sound that they create that causes me to grind my teeth to the point of causing dental damage. And posing as some sort of "high art" is the part that really makes my blood boil. And I haven't even gotten to the "profound" outro of All These Things that I've Done: "I've got soul, but I'm not a soldier". As Bill Bailey pointed out, on the surface it sounds alright. But then you analyse it and realise it's meaningless rubbish. It's as profound as saying "I've got ham, but I'm not a hamster".

Not good

Now I've listened to this

First half decent but probably not something I will come back to.

This truly is premium white people music. This is what people listen to when they think they have an ounce of taste while in reality it is simply the most over said tired expression of postpunk in the 2000 this emo kid thought he had something to say the suburban hell that he had grown up and has overtaken his brain cell to think that he has something to add to the world, but in reality all he has to add his commercial hits with some seven of a meaning, and without those three peak moments in this album, the rest of it was a complete slog that I couldn’t wait for it to be over it was honestly incredibly boring outside of very few particular moments. I sound like I hated this, but the hits are so massive that it’s hard to ignore. It almost makes me more frustrated because so much of this album is completely mediocre and sounds exactly the same. They end up resting themselves multiple times over this album. This could’ve been an email.

I have nothing against this album, but can’t say it did much for me.

It is the soundtrack to the PE department at a staff do. The production of the songs is a big issue for me - there is far too much going on and this means that when they want to change gear it doesn’t really go anywhere. The only song I actually like by the Killers (not on this album) is ‘When You Were Young’, which gets this right. I am not particularly bothered about lyrics but it does lose a star for the line ‘I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier’. I wouldn’t expect that tripe from a 10 year old trying to write something thoughtful.

I was always a little miffed that the killers blew up like they did. The songwriting isn’t particularly strong at any point in the album, and I include ‘mr brightside’ in it as, to me, the song is about absolutely nothing, yet has remained ubiquitous despite it. ‘I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier’ is the kind of lyric that might seem deep when you’re 15 but has zero depth to it as far as I can see. Flowers’ vocals also must have been tuned in post or comped to buggery as his singing (at least whenever I’ve heard them perform live) has been crap.

1001 albums to fall asleep to before you die aka pretty boring Listened 12/4/25

𝘏𝘰𝘵 𝘍𝘶𝘴𝘴 delivers the breakout single 𝘔𝘳. 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦, a track that deserves its status thanks to its driving momentum and instantly memorable hook. But beyond that highlight, the album leans heavily on familiar post-punk revival tropes — glossy synths, echoing guitars, and dramatic vocal delivery — without pushing the formula into particularly new territory. The songs are polished and catchy enough, yet they feel more like variations on sounds already established by earlier indie and new wave acts rather than something distinct or groundbreaking. The result is a record that has one undeniable anthem but struggles to stand out as a whole.

Had a few good tracks, though in general it is not something for me

Besides the hit songs, I really did not enjoy this album. “Mr. Brightside”, “Somebody Told Me”, and “All The Things That I’ve Done” are excellent songs. All the other songs made me feel like I was listening to an awful musical.

The first 4 songs are good, of which Mr. Brightside is amazing. Then it goes downhill.

Fort for mye

I once went to a country concert and I was pretty miserable the whole time. About halfway through, the band started playing Mr. Brightside and I was so annoyed that I left and ended up sneaking into a neighboring Danny Brown concert where I had the time of my life. I can at least appreciate The Killers for inspiring me to walk out of that first concert.

Arctic Strokes Killer Monkeys.

Just about as basic as you can get. Very much lowest common denominator rock. 1.5/5.0: Bad

not for me

I remember thinking this record was dull when it came out and man, I wasn’t wrong. Outside of the singles is just warmed over pop music.

No question their best album and one of the best debut albums. I heard most of the album was recorded using sm57 mics. That being said, after the first 5 songs it starts to feel like filler. It’s their best album, but it’s not that great compared to other bands.

There are only a couple of noteworthy songs on here outside the Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. Jenny and Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll are good, but the bassline seems like a rip off of The Smiths. 5/10

Loved this in high school.

Many many people have articulated my two rating thoughts and the reasons for it much better than I could. Couple bangers, but like someone said, saps the energy out of me.

Not sure what this is doing in a list of the greatest albums. It's pretty mediocre indie rock.

did not really enjoy the second half of the album, after all the nostalgia wore off.

First few songs were good. Then it was as if they fed The Strokes through a late-stage-capitalism-Karen filter (44/100)

Forgettable

Somebody Told Me

Mr. Brightside, the official white people anthem. The only reason I bump it to a 2.

Dok slušam ovaj album, beskućnik sa zvučnikom u Ubahnu, kojeg je vjerojatno ukrao, repa i to mi zvuči bolje od ovog. Mr. Brightside vraća u teenage dirtbag razdoblje, to moram priznati. 2/5, 3/10

Out of all the bands of this era there is something about The Killers that I just don’t like. I tried to listen again with an open mind but they don’t do anything for me. Maybe live would be better…

I don't really care for sob rock

More like hot piss. Music made for radio.

Its a noe from may dahling Nota: 2.5

I have heard this album or version of this several times and from plenty of bands. Polished, goodish, somehow enjoyable and won't make a long lasting memories. Still I somehow like it debating with my self is this 2 or three star album.

It's the "Somebody told me" band! I've always found them vaguely annoying, and now I think I know why: they're sort of brit sounding, in a bit of Suede vein, but they're actually more dance music than anything else. They're teasing proper lad culture vibes, but then slap us in the face with Sophie Ellis-Bextoresque dance grooves, but they're too Gallagher in their riffing to pull that off either. Wha'n massif fokin' fiddle innit!

Incredibly boring 🥱 In case you’re wondering how boring, I asked ChatGPT and here are the best answers: 1️⃣ This album is so boring it makes elevator music sound like a mosh pit. 2️⃣This album is so boring it should come in a box set with a complimentary pillow and blanket. 3️⃣This album is so boring I had to check my pulse after every other song just to make sure I wasn’t comatose yet. All true btw

The most disappointing thing about this album is that “The Fillers” joke has been made too many times already. Such a front loaded album that I think they must have known what they were doing. Also the mixing and production on this really annoys me. The vocals and drums sound awful to me.

I once accidentally saw the Killers live when they appeared unannounced for a ‘secret set’ on a smaller stage at Glastonbury They played the first 5 songs from this album. Everyone danced and sang along. Then they fucked off. I wish they did the same in the studio because the second half of this album is absolute shite.

I am a big fat hater of the Killers so went into this fully expecting to be irritated by it. Immediately annoyed by Mr Brightside but then Smile Like You Mean It came on so I couldn’t help myself and started singing along. When that ended I was quickly bombarded by the next two tracks which brought me back to being a preteen and I couldn’t figure out if I enjoyed that or not. However immediately after they were done, I was back to being a hater and thinking about how much Brendan Flowers vocals make me want to tear my hair out because all the songs sound the saaaaaaaaame. I did save Smile Like You Mean It, but man, the Killers is such a lame band.

Really tiring, but I can't deny how good Mr Brightside is

I was deep into jazz and my own CDs and MP3s during this era. I remember a single from this album on the radio and maybe on TV. I’m enjoying giving it a listen and reading the emotional cues of its time. “All These Things That I’ve Done” is a standout single I had forgotten about. I do feel the tone rarely varies. The album description mentions Duran Duran, but Duran Duran had variance in their music. This is more one-dimensional in the expression of the band’s capabilities.
