The College Dropout
Kanye WestIf you can separate the art from the artist this is the best hip hop album of its decade.

As a rush fan I was never giving this anything but 5 stars.
the worst possible cover of comfortably numb ever heard. I am just not the target audience.
Masterpiece
failed to impress. His other album on the list was much better.
2 of the tracks had so much airplay I could barely listen but the album overall a very strong work as a whole.
One of the all time great hard rock albums. Forget paranoid, war pigs and iron man which you've heard a billion times and you still have some really great tracks like hand of doom, fairies wear boots and planet caravan.
Gave it an above average review. The musicianship was brilliant but hard for me to appreciate the vocal aspects not knowing the language.
Just seemed like a standard 90's pop album to me. Not bad but I didn't find anything special about it.
I don't really know how to judge it. As an old metal head I hated the nu-metal rap bands of the late 90's early 2000's. I tried to keep an open mind but it seemed like a bog standard nu-metal album to me.
Receiving a 2nd blur album in under a week by this system kind of turned me off. They were a mediocre band that I guess is important as one member went on to the Gorillaz but this was a so-so album and not an all time great.
If your up for some weird shit this is the album for you.
Went from the weirdest album on the list with Duck Stab by the Residents to the most syrupy pop album on the list. Neither is my cup of tea.
This was the hardest time I've had finishing an album on this list.
yee haw
Masterpiece
really enjoyable album to listen to in the background while working.
Hard to jam out to a rap song you don't understand the words for
an album about banging a 14 year old is hard to take even if I don't understand french
masterpiece
garbage music by a garbage person
A country master work
not a fan of sprintsteen but a good album all the same
the worst possible cover of comfortably numb ever heard. I am just not the target audience.
Eddie Hazel's masterwork
Came out as he was dying so holds sentimental value but the music is not his best.
Obviously no Angel Dust but still an amazing album
pretty boring take on British grunge
Side one couldn't be any better with probably 3 of the 5 or 6 best songs of his career on one album side.
A pretty mediocre album. I get that a ton of great 90's bands point to them as the trailblazing band for the 90's rock sound but other than historical importance it isn't a great album to listen to.
Some iconic songs but not the later day masterpieces of their other albums
A record of extremely solid unoffensive and vanilla songs. They are well recorded, produced and written but most of these albums I play while working and there will be a track or two that grab my attention. These just all came across as background noise with nothing jumping out as interesting.
Not a horrible album but no idea what merits warrant it being on this list.
just not up to his earlier standards.
I've never understood how so many people think of this as the greatest album of all times. They are a bunch of mostly decent songs but the over saturation of them in TV, Movies, presidential campaigns etc etc make me dislike them even more. That being said The Chain is a pretty fucking amazing song which gets this album to 3 stars despite me not really caring for the rest of the album.
When I saw an album by UB40 and clicked it and saw Red Red Wine which is the only song most American's (myself included) know from UB40 wasn't on the album, I was expecting this to be slog to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised to be giving this a 4 star rating as I was expecting 2 at most.
The completely muted bass and last couple of tracks makes this a 4 star instead of 5 but it is without question their best album.
It's the GOAT for the genre
if you had a girlfriend in the 90's you undoubtedly have heard this more than enough for one lifetime. Myself included.
One album from this guy would have been more than enough. Two Albums on a list of 1000 great albums is fucking excessive.
3 incredible songs but a lot of filler
While not a fan of grind core in general preferring more traditional metal and punk this is the best it has to offer. The best the genre has to offer is still not worth 5 stars however.
I typically don't care for the foreign language albums but the music here was amazing.
Not a horrible album. No idea how it made this list though.
Very much like Fleedwood Mac's Rumors to me. The good songs on the album have been so overplayed in radio and other media that I have no desire to listen to them and while it certainly isn't a bad album there is just nothing that really seems interesting when listening to it.
Really a 3 star album but I'm giving an extra star for not having Neil Young on the album.
Really had to force myself not to quit before I finished 1 play through. I'm clearly in the minority though as the album seems to be rated fairly well. To each his own.
I was expecting another boring art piece album when I saw the cover but was pleasantly surprised. Pretty rocking album and the weirdness of the band members disappearance made for an interesting read while enjoying the album.
meh
The worst album from a band spiraling the drain creatively does not deserve to be on this list. It isn't absolute garbage but it is a substantial step down from the bends or ok computer.
Ray Charles playing country standards sounded like a horrible idea and I was pleasantly surprised by how wrong I was.
Another overrated album by an overrated artist on this list. Harvest is a great album but I'll take a pass on all the other Neil Young on the list.
In a year where they released 3 albums in a single year there was obviously a lot of fluff. However you still have some all time great songs like Lodi on this one that makes it 4 stars.
failed to impress. His other album on the list was much better.
There are a couple of really good songs but probably 45 minutes of fluff that does nothing for me and makes the album a real chore to listen to.
If you can separate the art from the artist this is the best hip hop album of its decade.
Way too long. Could have dropped some filler tracks and had a 3 or 4 star album.
Probably only a 3 star album but as someone who plays bass i gave it an extra star for the bass lines
Really fine album. Was waffling between 4 and 5 stars for a while before deciding on 4.
Another album by Neil Young with 2 good songs and a lot of filler but hey its Neil Young so definitely have to hear it before you die.
Solid album with a couple stand out tracks
I begrudgingly give this 5 stars as I generally hate this genre of music but listening with an open mind I can acknowledge it as the best of the best of what it has to offer. I generally hate when the link from this site brings me to an extended version of an album but in this case 2 of the bonus tracks are stand outs and it isn't just filler.
After so many bad to mid David Bowie albums on this list I was tempted to give this 4 stars instead of 5. I found the albums instructions that it was "To be played at maximum volume" to still hold true however. This really is his masterpiece however and while I'll undoubtedly listen to this a hundred more times in my life I don't think I'll ever be listening to any other of his albums again as I think I've made it through all the horrible later albums and OKish early albums by him on this list.
Not a fan of radiohead but I feel like I have to at least admit that this is their best work and certainly deserving of a positive review.
did not expect that I would ever give a movie soundtrack a 5 star rating but there it is
two really amazing songs and a bunch of garbage does not a good album make
Not a hug fan of folk music and I guess this is a classic but it did nothing for me and felt like a chore to listen to most of the tracks.
Had only heard sour times before getting this album of the day. Holy shit that was so much better than I would have thought. Not often do I give a second listen immediately but this was definitely one of those times.
I normally dread when I get an album by a singer/songwriter as often times they feel over represented on this list. I knew a couple of his songs going in and was expecting I would enjoy those and be turned off by the other tracks on the album. I was surprised to find myself quite pleased with the whole album. I had to pause when I got to today's rating and think before ultimately choosing 4 stars as it was almost a 5.
I try to keep an open mind with foreign language albums but can really only judge the music as I don't know what is being said. This album music sounded incredibly repetitive but given it is a soundtrack I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and assume they were going at this like a concept album and not give it a 2 star review.
Prior to this album I had lumped Alice in Chains in with the metal scene. I believe they opened the clash of the titans tour with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth that I attended. This was 30+ years ago so my memory is perhaps foggy. I bought this on tape(anyone remember tapes?) and was like WTF is this as I had not heard anything but Would? from the album and was expecting something much more Metal. It did grow on me with each listen and while I didn't care for a lot of the Seattle grunge scene bands, AiC remains my favorite. I had not given this album a listen in a while and think Jar of Flies was their best album by far. This was still a welcome reunion with an old friend and the nostalgia of my teen years pushed this to 5 stars.
I've never seen an album on this list with less than 1000 plays on one of the song tracks until this album. I think there is a reason for this ...
3 stars for me 5 stars for anyone 70+
This is one of those albums I expected to hate and was pleasantly surprised by. Had only heard one of her songs on the radio previously and expected unlistenable new age garbage but music was a lot better than expected. Will certainly listen to this album more in the future.
one 5 star song and a whole lot of filler
A hugely influential album with 0 good songs anyone wants to listen to is still a bad album.
Yet another very OK David Bowie Album.
A very rare 5 star alternative album for me.
It could have been a 4 star album but after having the Rock Lobster riff stuck in my head all damned day I lowered it to a 3.
Just because something was first doesn't mean it is the best. I understand this being included for historical purposes but it isn't really very good.
I'm a sucker for concept albums and prog rock. Not really a masterpiece but a very solid album.
meh
An extra star from me for being half of a concept album.
No real stand-out tracks and Brain Wilson's lack of participation in the album shows but it is still a very enjoyable album to listen to.
I think Cure fans think of this as their best album but I would say the earlier standing on a beach or their later 80's work is better. Still a solid album.
The day before was Lincensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys. I think for many that may be a 5 star album but I just couldn't get to 4 stars knowing that eventually I'd be getting 36 Chambers, Takes a Nation of Millions and some other classics. As soon as I hit vote I got 36 Chambers which is my all time favorite rap album and its one of the few I've been able to take the vinyl out for and play after receiving the daily recommendation.
A very decent country album with 2 giant hits but not up to the level of some other country albums on this list.
I somehow had never listened to a Rolling Stones album start to finish previously. I've certainly always thought of them as a singles type band. I was presently surprised at the quality of this album as I was expecting to just enjoy the 2 singles I had previously heard.
The music was good but the album was overly preachy. I enjoy Franti's later work with Spearhead much more.
The Who are amazing and this album has an all time great song , but let's be real they have 3 albums that put this to shame and a couple others that are better. This is my first who album on this list so maybe they are like David Bowie and this is the first album in a flood of who albums I'm going to see, but as a fan of The Who I just don't know how you justify putting this on the list as it is maybe their 5th or 6th best album. My generation is certainly an all time great rock song but the album is not that good. A lot of rock bands first albums have a raw feel that is missing in later more polished work like Tool's "Undertow" or Metallica's "Kill 'em All" that have an argument for them being the band's best work but here I think you are just looking at Pete Townsend not having entered his prime for songwriting.
I know it is blasphemous to refer to a Beatles album as Meh but while I enjoy some of the covers this is just a poor or at best OK album. Not horrible but I can't see giving it more than a couple stars.
2000's alternative is a category that I usually go into expecting the worst. Not a fan of a lot of other beloved bands from that era and was expecting this album to be a chore to get through. This is an album that if I listened to another 4 times may go down to a 3 star but they get extra credit for exceeding my expectations for the genre and in a rare move for me I listened to the album a second time immediately after I finished it.
When I get these Brit I always listen hoping that this will be the one that resonates. This wasn't the one that resonates and I'm starting to think maybe Brit Pop might be the equivalent to me of what other people think when they get the a hardcore album from Napalm Death or an out there album from the Butthole Surfers.
As a rush fan I was never giving this anything but 5 stars.
Some bands have no albums on this list. Radiohead on the other hand can record Thom Yorke sing a line over the sound of a flushing toilet and it will be included on the next version of the list with no thought given. This album is objectively bad, maybe not as bad as In Rainbows but I can't take his voice and the music on this album is not very interesting. I know that it is crazy to say I can't take his voice when I just gave 2112 5 stars yesterday but at least that music is entertaining.
Another 1 or 2 star forgettable brit-pop album. Gave it two stars as it was never annoying enough that I was like what is this garbage but never interesting enough that I noticed it as more than background music.
WTF did I just listen to and how did it last 3 hours. There were some hints of a few good songs here but none really felt finished and unfortunately there weren't 3 good songs with some filler to fill out a 45 minute album there were 3 or 4 OK songs with 65 filler songs to fill out 3 hours. I guess from a this is something different standpoint I get putting it on the list but just didn't work for me.
I get why it could be interesting for someone that likes soundtracks but I generally never listen to movie soundtracks so listening to one for a pretend movie just does nothing for me.
I was maybe 5 songs in when I ordered a Vinyl copy. Maybe I was just in the correct mood for listening to this album but I was expecting an album of filler with 2 exceptionally great songs in Lullaby and Fascination street and 2 radio friendly hits when I looked at the tracklist. I honestly don't think there is a bad song on this album. I think this is probably my favorite album that I never listened to previously that the list has given me. There have been a couple other albums I hadn't listened to before that I gave 5 stars but I really don't know how I missed this album as I listened to mostly alternative and metal through the 90's but I guess I never gave the Cure the credit I should have. This is simply a masterpiece
I consider myself to be a huge Queens of the Stone Age fan. I really enjoy this album but it isn't even close to being their best work. To rate an album 4 stars while also saying it doesn't belong on the list is probably an odd hot take but that is my belief. If it is here as a historical importance type album I feel then Kyuss which evolved into QOTSA should have been included. I agree QOTSA should be on the list but I think Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, and Lullabies to Paralyze would have all been better choices. I get they aren't David Bowie or Elvis Costello so don't warrant multiple albums on the list but picking one of their better albums to give people a taste of what the band sounds like would have been better.
I vaguely remembered hearing one of their songs on the radio in the early 90's but didn't remember them and had never heard an album. Was expecting something funky but not something so heavy. It was a pleasing surprise.
Not a huge fan of the band but they had some really nice hits in the 80's that I remember. Not one of them was to be found on the album. I'll mark this down as confirmation that Brit Pop is not for me as it seemed like a pretty meh album.
This has to be one of the most front loaded albums ever. The first 6 tracks are had me going. Then it went downhill so fast I was like this went from 5 stars to 3. The closing track thankfully saved the day and while I can't give it 5 stars when I would never play side 2 of a record it is a solid album and I think it might be my favorite from the RHCP. I know there fans would probably find that blasphemous but thats like just your opinion man.
The two singles are really stand out tracks but nothing on the album that hurts my ears. I had listened to this a lot as a kid as it was one of the few tapes my sister had and it would be on in the background a lot. The nostalgia factor for me makes this a positive 3 star review instead of a 2 star I'll never listen to this again.
I felt old listening to this album. I know he is probably the biggest star in hip hop to today's audience but listening to this just didn't do much for me compared to other rap albums on the list. Maybe this is a modern classic and I'm out of touch but I feel like in 20 years 36 chambers will still be a classic and wonder if people will still be listening to this.
I've had a pretty low rating for solo artist folk singers that are included on this list. I saw this one come up and knew it was 5 stars already as it is an album I've listened to countless times before but still find it just as enjoyable as the first time.
So far from what country music is today. Interesting time piece but not much in the way of amazing music or lyrics to get me to listen again.
I can see the influences it may have had on other musicians but didn't find it all that great.
I listened to this album a lot when it came out. Listening now I am fine just having a track or two from them show up on a playlist. Not an album worth of enjoyment for me on this record.
I saw him perform at a festival once and the crowd was not really that into hip hop and while he tried to win them over it just fell flat. I was only vaguely familiar with his work but the lack of crowd response kind of soured me on him and I never gave Common much of a chance after that. The lowered expectations based on a performance that was more of a crowd issue let this album give me a pleasant surprise. Damn good album.
I try to ignore everything about an artist's personal life and personal failings when listening to music. Given that there is no way this album gets anything but 5 stars. Anyone who rates it less either is basing their rating on rumors of his personal life or just being pretentious. I'd say 80's pop music is one of my least favorite genres to listen to but this is still 5 stars.
This was an album I listened to religiously in the 90's. In 1995 this would have been a 5 star album for me. I also would have rated it higher than Dirt by Alice In Chains at the time. I guess time changes things as listening to AIC's album really impressed me and I gave it 5 stars and listening to this I could remember really enjoying it as a teenager but found myself wanting to skip a lot of the tracks.
Just looking at their photos on the album cover I knew I was in for another British band. As with most other British bands on this list they also failed to impress
