Bandwagonesque

i have to imagine the use of microsoft paint for the album cover was a lot cooler and edgier in 1991 than 2023. regardless, i am here to focus on the music. on the whole, teenage fanclub's bandwagonesque left something to be desired. it had an early sound of alternative or indie music. some songs were better than others; i felt like teenage fanclub found more of their groove with "is this music?" 2.5, close to a 3 but not quite.

Meh, it just became background noise after the a few songs.

Way too pop influenced alt-rock. The song "Is This Music?" really reminds me of another song that I can't place. Someone probably sampled the riff. It is probably my favorite song from the album though. The album is not completely bad but it's just not my taste.

This band was on my radar for a while but I never bothered to actually check them out. I remember them being on an old SNL back when Comedy Central would show episodes from the '90s as filler material. That's all I knew going in. It's all pretty underwhelming. It's just Capital M Meh. It's Hard to decide between 2 and 3. I'm going 2 with this one because of whatever rag it was that said this was better than Nevermind lolololololololol

Never heard of these before, was fine but didn't inspire me really. It starts off well - the opening track is a good, but not electric opener (it lacks a bit of pace and energy), but it doesn't really accelerate from there. My favourite track - and the only one I'll save to listen to again - is the closer, which is a guitar-led instrumental that works really well. Feels a bit harsh to give them a 2, given they're quite early proponents of this type of music that I generally quite like, but what came later really improved on this, so 2 it is.

This is like an "uncanny valley" for my ears. This sounds very 90s. I generally like 90s music. This even sounds like music I like but I do not like this at all.

Don't remember hearing about this group in the 90's, but I don't think I would have been into them then. Definitely not into it now. Just not much going on to hold my interest.

Sounds like a 90’s garage rock band but with 60’s vocal harmonies and melody.

Scottish band with this album sounding as your average boring American group. More a sleeping pill than music, in my opinion. This was rated by 'Spin magazine' as album of the year, above e.g. Nirvana's Nevermind (Wiki)? For me a moderate compromise between shoegaze like Slowdive, grunge like Nirvana and guitar music like e.g. Husker Du or Sonic Youth. Those are all brilliant and this is far from it.

This album was kind of all over the place stylistically, with 90s alt rock music moments but 60s Beach Boys-esque singing/simple songs. Overall, a bit boring and forgettable

This sounded undeveloped and wasn't very entertaining. Not sure why this needed to be on the list.

This music could have been written, performed and produced by high school boys in a garage. This is not a compliment. The lyrics were incredibly juvenile.

I have big mixed feelings about this album. From the outset my initial reaction was "why is this on this list? it's generic alternative, surely there must be more than 1000 albums better than this." I still think that stands to some degree. But I also hear moments of greatness in this album, and wonder what might have happened if it had been pushed in a harder, less poppy direction. The multipart harmonies (which Wikipedia notes were encouraged by their producer because no contemporaries were doing it) are the biggest problem for me - the rest of the instrumentation is alternative with shades of shoegaze and indie rock elements, but then you get these tight, highly produced multipart harmonies that don't fit. Ultimately I'm sticking with a 2 here because so much of this album is just generic and blah... but also especially in the back half I feel like I hear potential just below the surface.

That was an album alright. Had a few decent tracks here and there but overall not very memorable.

Is This Music? Yes. Do I want to listen to it a bunch? Not really certain.

There are some good tracks on here but some stuff that is the sort of conflict free alt rock that appeals to people who dont really like alt rock

A nice, easy, middle-of-the-road listen. It's good, but nothing of note to remember.

The first time I listened to this, it just sort of melted out of my memory having made very little impact. It all sort of blended together in the same sound. Then I read it was picked by Spin as "Album of the Year" over Nirvana's Nevermind in 1991. Wait... what? And then more and more accolades! Listening again, I caught a little more of it. Okay, it's fine. Score goes up a notch. But what am I missing? What am I missing? It's still not great! Third time, I'm wondering why I'm trying so hard. This isn't worth it. Score goes back down a notch. Is there some sensory receptor I'm lacking? A piece of my soul?

This did not appeal to me. I found it boring at best, for most of the album. In fact, the first time I listened, I fell asleep the second track in. Okay, I was exhausted and not even trying to stay awake. On second listen, I kind of wished that I was asleep... In both cases, while asleep and while awake, the last track did catch my ear a bit.

Given the benefit of hindsight, this is a pretty ordinary album that doesn't belong on this list. [Hint hint nudge nudge to the curators here, things are not set in stone, you know!]

There's a reason why this band didn't make a bigger splash, or stayed in the collective memory of a generation. It's just not good. I don't care how influential (allegedly) they were, this was a lame album.

Il a certainement eu une influence, mais personnellement, je n’ai pas tant accroché. Les autres bands influencés ont mieux fait.

It was fun! I had a good time. Nothing super standout. Loved the Beatles-y sound and melody writing. As an album it’s a little empty in the middle, but I liked some of the cuter songs like Metal Baby.

Very much a forgettable album. Did nothing for me.

This could be the most boring club I've ever been to. The first track is a little gem and there's a few other nice and catchy moments, but really a few... This material could not stand as a full album, it sounds like a rehearsal of ideas that have not been completed.

I really do not understand the appeal of this album. Almost everything feels so simple and dull and basic. The vocals are so low effort and the instrumentation is just boring for most of the songs. The last song is the only that stood out to me. 4/10

College rock from what I heard.

It's... fine I guess? There's nothing much here, to be honest. It comes off a little watered-down and kind fake. It's like it's not even really rock and roll. It's just rock-flavored music. I feel like Teenage Fanclub is the cheese pizza of rock music. If you like pizza, you're going to be okay with plain cheese pizza. But if someone starts telling you that their favorite pizza is plain cheese, you start questioning whether or not they have the palate of a child. Similarly, if someone told me that their favorite band was Teenage Fanclub, I'd start to question their taste in music.

Fairly forgettable. Pleasant enough early 90s indie. The kind of thing I listened to at the time but I don't really remember much teenage fanclub. Maybe sparkys dream but that's not on this album. All in all a bit samey and not helped by a lack of nostalgia.

I thought I was going to like this at first, but it's pretty lame. It's like Weezer, but somehow worse.

If Michael Owen was a 90s brit-pop kinda band, he'd be Teenage Fanclub. This might be the most inoffensive record I've ever heard but the caveat to this is that it's just not very interesting, although 'The Concept', and 'Star Sign' provide brief but welcome distractions. It's better than Leonard Cohen, so there's that.

I did not know this band. Maybe it deserves a second change, but I did not like too much.

It's fine. I should say more and maybe mention that these guys were integral to the third wave power pop sound of the 90's, but I found this album too boring to find motivation for writing.

Two halfway decent tracks bookend the rest of an LP filled with pure schmaltz. Disappointing to see the slight sparks of something different in the lengthy opener and shoegazey closer completely snuffed by the insipid melodies and eye-gouging repetition of lyrics such as "I know/ but I don't know" and "I love your walk/ I love your talk."

Bob Dylan won the coveted  Pulitzer Prize "for his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." (https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/bob-dylan)  I'm sure Norman  Blake is expecting the same for his brilliant and provocative  lyrics to "What You Do To Me." For a joke I searched lyrics meaning for that song to see if anyone could find something useful to say, One dude pointed out that he says knee rather than knees once. Profound for sure. So Spin Mag voted this 1991 album of the year ahead of Nevermind. Hmmm. Whoever made that decision must feel silly especially when they see the verdict the learned listening audience of the 1001 App. rendered on the relative standing of these two albums. When I listened I couldn't help but think that this is a glaring example of formula music that was adopted by the radio stations that used to have  EDGE. Those stations clung to the term "alternative rock" and convinced their listeners it was alternative rather than same old, same old formulae music. Anyway, I had lots of extra time today so I listened to this album three times. I'm sad to report that the formula actually works and it was downright scary to watch it work on me.  On the third time through, I actually started toe tapping and the formula resulted in a +1 to my rating.  Pure Evil!

For a ’91 release I find the music fairly ordinary. The lyrics too aren’t too inspiring, though a definite step up from ACDC. I’m not a fan of the second (feedback) song, I thought it should have been buried deep on side 2. Speaking of deep on side 2, I like the final track "Is this Music?" with it’s bag pipes feel.

Not for me, is this music and December are stand out tracks.

Melody-heavy alternative rock built on jangly guitars, steady drums, and relaxed, harmonized, smooth, conversational vocals. Listening to it feels like a long drive through okaish and unchanging countryside—monotone familiar scenery passing by without much variation. Despite its tuneful warmth, the experience ultimately lacks depth and feels boring from the start.

Wow, this was made in a lab to annoy me. Poppy but no hooks, insipid lyrics, boring droning snooze-inducing vocals, tries to get heavy but fails, what was Cobain thinking!?

Nothing outstanding or remarkable, it's another in the 1001 albums that you wonder why it's included

Absolutely mediocre. Artist could have saved a bunch of time and just not made this album. Maybe not a single interesting sequence of notes happened in this entire thing. Like FOR EXAMPLE Scott 2 was bad/weird but at least it made me think thoughts, this one was just straight nothing at all. I can see how they're a direct influence of many other supermarket mid rock artists still around to this day, so I can at least respect that a little 2.4/10

Teenage Fanclub answers the important question of - what if the Gin Blossoms were Scottish and better reviewed than Nirvana? This is very jangly, very early 90s alternative rock.

Reviewing my reviews, I was reminded that I hadn't been able to listen to this album in its entirety the first time around. So, I tracked down a full copy, and now I can safely say that my partial listen was just as good as the full - as in not very good at all.

Vraiment pas mon style,

No offense, but this was one of if not the most boring, literally repetitive (like the same sentence over and over again for the entirety of a song) and just plain stupid albums that I’ve heard lately. Not good at all. It may be music, but either way bad music.

I listened to this album twice yesterday and remember nothing about it.

Not feeling confident after seeing the MS Paint cover. I could have gotten Nevermind or Loveless or Screamadelica or Low End Theory but noooo, the RNG had to give me this gen x sludge. The Concept opens the album with a by the numbers indie rock number with some truly atrocious lyrics although some nice harmonisation in the chorus. They add insult to injury with a few minutes of prog guitar noodling at the end. Last 20 seconds of Satan rocks but only increases my concern that the rest of the album is going to be ponderous and frustrating. December confirms my suspicions. What You Do to Me recovers a bit with an acceptable glam number (although the lyrics remain vapid). I Don't Know occasionally has some My Bloody Valentine style dissonance but otherwise remains in the comfortably mediocre depths. Star Sign continues the primary school level rhyming (why do they sing with American accents?). Metal Baby has some nice jangly moments but is let down by a forgettable chorus and would have had more impact at half the length. Pet Rock as a title and as a track perfectly encapsulates what this album is. Tenor sax in a rock song tells you all you need to know about their sensibilities. By the time we get to Sidewinder I'm ready to hit the eject button. The final track Is This Music is actually pretty alright, the fact that it's an instrumental should clue you in to what's wrong with the album. The drums sound like they were recorded inside a sofa. There are occasional noisy bits at the start and end of all their songs. They would have had much better effect stringing those together and releasing it as a single than wasting my time with this nonsense.

The safest 90s album I have ever heard. Every song is very simple in that they are formatted the same way, guitar riff with like 3 progressions, the same tempo for vocals, very basic drumline, the bassist does his job and then the song is done. Just really not for me. 2/10

Yes, that might be the worst album on this list so far! Other bad albums were very experimental and went over my head a little, or were in a genre I don't enjoy at all, whereas "Bandwagonesque" doesn't take any chances, it's a safe, traditional soft rock and somehow it's the most boring record I have ever heard. It's so bland that I don't have anything else to add. It's just a no from me.

I was afraid I would like this after everyone said how bad it was, fortunately for me I agree! Every time I thought a song was going to get good it took a nose dive and got worse and sometimes even worse after that! The lyrics and the vocals were just very very bad. I also am confused about how this made it on this list and now I am questioning what we will see in the future.

I am downgrading this album’s generous two-star rating by a star because the knuckleheads at Spin magazine decided that this album was the better 1991 album of the year than Nevermind.

They sound like a local garage rock band that you might find entertaining 30 some odd college stoners in a run down bar on a Tuesday night. Which is an awesome and important role to have, but doesn't mean this poorly produced and entirely forgettable album belongs anywhere near a list like this.

Feels like the kind of album you must have been there to really enjoy it.

Didn’t click with me, which is peculiar considering I enjoy most other bands from that genre/era. I’d choose Pavement and/or Dinosaur Jr over Teenage Fanclub any day, but I can see why others would like choose otherwise.
