Reviews (page 7 of 8)

This is fine but tbh this kind of sludgy mid tempo alt rock from the early 90s doesn’t really do it for me. If the melodies don’t hit like Weezer’s blue album then idk what I’m supposed to feel here.

Kept going back & forth between how I felt on this one... Definitely enjoyed a few tracks, but ultimately I don't see why it should be here other than the author's bias. After a 2nd listen, I felt it got worse.

Gene Simmons C&D aside, there is *nothing* notable about this album.

I don't understand why this is important. The music is fine but it mostly feels like it belongs as background noise in a grocery store or something.

Beatlesesque alt-rock. Minging. The noisiness makes it even more repulsive

Pretty gener-ock, no hits to speak for either. But some catchiness here and there. Not garbage, but not ground breaking.

Was a fan of teenage fanclub in my teens - although listening again I struggle to recall any of this album other than "What you do to me". Question how this album was deemed to be within the 1000 best of all time (and can see why no UK participants fairly criticise the list for being too UK centric). It's perfectly competent and melodic indie pop/rock but its all a bit fcking bland and does not really get the juices flowing or inspire any action.

skýr áhrif frá stóru stjörnunni. mér finnst samt vanta lög sem ná hæðum chiltons. ég veit ekki hvort að þetta muni einhvern tíma heilla mig. set 2,5 á gripinn.

Of all the albums on the list, this is definitely one of them. I respect how it puts itself out there, just being an album, and not caring how instantly forgettable it is.

This band has never really done anything for me. They come close sometimes, though! I would describe this album as “fine” and “inoffensive.”

Is there really a demand for ANOTTHERRRR random rock album from the 90's??? It's not that bad that I should give it a 1/5, but it's just a rock album. The vocals are just a barebones version of great singers, it's like taking away all the soul from the song. Def another person's cup of tea tho.

It was a generic rock album that sounded like some guys out of a garage made an album. If I knew the guys and heard this from them I'd be impressed but compared to some of the other stuff we get on here it's super tame.

It's not so much that I disliked this, it's more that it felt like music you'd make as the studio band to put in a movie because they couldn't afford real songs people recognize, so you try to kind of knock off the sound of bands people do know? A long- and generic-feeling 42 minutes.

Sure why not. This was relatively fine. Didnt care too much for the vocals. And some of the tracks felt like they dragged too long with unnecessary guitar riffs. This wasn’t bad really, just a lame choice to be on this list.

I didn’t really need to listen to this before I die.

it's really quite boring and meh. nothing that really grabs my attention and makes me want to repeat it. the first track was probably the track i enjoyed the most.

Boring

picks: star sign, concept, what you do to me

if you stick it out to the end you will hear an awesome instumental track

I’m hearing a little Dandy Warhols, a little Hoodoo Gurus, a little Magnetic Fields too. I’m quite the fan especially of the first two listed, but Teenage Fanclub seems like a watered down version of the three. They’d probably grow on me if I spun the album 3 or 4 times, but I don’t have the inclination for this at the moment, so they’ll have to settle with a 2.

"I Don't Know" was alright, and I enjoyed some of "What You Do To Me" but I did not like "Metal Baby", "Pet Rock" is ok. Overall I'm not a huge fan, it was alright but I don't think I can give this a 3 and a 2 instead.

Noisy guitar-pop with a real lean into the harmonic side of rock. Plenty of dreamy guitars washing over melodic bass lines, and lyrics that could only come from one wonderfully sweary place. It was once interrupted by a burst of punk riffage, and I got my hopes up that this album was about to take off - alas. Maybe the best pub rock album I've heard? Favourite tracks: December, Star Sign, Is This Music?, The Wildhearts and Dinosaur Jr

Empire Records, huh? This album feels like it was made in a lab for the mall. "Put the Beach Boys in a blender with Alice in Chains". As trendy as frosted tips and doomed to be as short-lived.

Too average for me...no standouts...Would certainly not be in my 1001 list...

I guess? Nothing stood out with this one

hauskahko..

Teenage “ Not Really Part Of The “ Fanclub. Didn’t really do anything for me.

I immediately thought "why" when I saw this one pop up. I remember their name and the fact that they were being pushed on us in the early 90's. They were on all kinds of Up & Comers and compilation discs at the time but it's so vanilla that it never took root or connected with me because there were better options. "The Concept" has 6.3M listens and if I've ever heard it I don't remember it, it's that memorable. 6 minutes long? "What You Do To Me" was the other "hit" on this album at 6.1M listens. Again, never heard it, and I was a certified music junkie living in record stores & spending all my money on discs, tickets & weed at the time. They sound like a band you hear at any bar on any night and you think, "not bad", but you forget their name by Monday morning. This album has nothing compelling on it, I'd never give it a second listen. I was bored from the start & longing for it to end. It's the 90's at their most generic. 2 stars for having a following, but zero radio hits you hear today and no long lasting influence on music.

A huge disappointment. I’ve been very excited for this album for many years, as so many artists I respect have rated it so highly. There is some artistry in its construction, but the result is extremely flat. The jangly sound is banal, and the vocal harmonies are unpleasant. I suppose there was some desire to evoke catchy ‘60s/‘70s pop à la The Beach Boys or Big Star, and in doing so, to sound original for its time, but the effect is downright cornball and inessential. There are a lot of mediocre ‘90s indie rock records, but this is something worse.

I’m surprised they got a label, not to mention beating out Nirvana album sales. You’d think I would have heard of this before if that were the case.

Wanted to like it more than I did. P boring, dnf.

It's a genre I can often enjoy but this album felt noisy, dissonant, and listless. Not my thing.

An album that was not all that relevant, even in 1991, and is definitely not relevant to this list at all anymore. Fine album, but not all time great. That said, I did enjoy the track "Is This Music?" and added it to my collection.

Every song was the same song.

Bog standard indie 2/5

This was a lukewarm feel-good album for me. Nothing too extreme one way or the other. Decent Brit pop sound that really took me back to the 90s and how music sounded.back then.

Yeah, i didnt warm to this. Its just before my teenage years started so maybe i dont like it as i saw it as too close to the stuff i love and i want to differentiate myself. I can see the start of britpop in this but there is too much shoegaze, american college rock and noise rock for me. The occasional tune does lift it but it didnt get me.

Boring, derivative, each songs sounds like the other. Glad it is over.

It's music 2.5

# Album Name: Bandwagonesque # Artist: Teenage Fanclub # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Wow, this album beat nevermind to the "best album of 1991". That is a massive statement for any band. So im super intrigued to see what this album has got. Unfortunately this was pretty much dog shit to me. How the fuck did someone think this was better than nevermind is beyond me. Maybe im a simpleton. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No

Sounds like it might have been an inspiration for Britpop, but generally found this very forgettable.

Абсолютная посредственность

This singer reminds me of Wilco, or Elliot Smith, but the band is pop punk. Not bad. Some enjoyable stuff here.

it was fine, didnt really stick

Punk Beach Boys. Fav Track: What You Do To Me

One of those "I don't understand the high praise" albums for me. The instruments blur to the background and the vocals and lyrics are bland.

2.5, almost a 3 but not quite

#67 Kinda boring, don't remember it after listening.

Wat doet dit in deze lijst? Irrelevant

Already listened last week. Don't rate this, 2/5?

"What you do to me" was the only track I recall from this era. I do remember them doing a kickass version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin," which is musically superior to the original.

Nah. Boring.

Alt rock that had a decent sound but nothing that broke though for me. Released 1991

So bland I almost didn't notice it

meh, trying too hard to be something its not but not horrible. 4/10

I wouldn't be mad if somebody put this on but it just didn't click with me

It was okay

Boring background rock album, album of the year 1991 when Nevermind came out? What? 2/5

1.7 Maybe I was just in a bad mood when I was listening to this but I found this album excessively bland. Overly simplified Beatlesque songs with a hint of Alternative stylings. The one song I thought I liked (Alcoholiday) wasn't anything special on the 2nd listen. But at the end of the day I couldn't do any better

An album that could have been released by any of a 1000 bands in any of the last 30+ years.

Imagine. The patient is nearing the end. Doctors say it's time to unhook the life support but someone says, 'Wait! He hasn't heard Bandwagoneseque by Teenage Fanclub yet. So the inevitable is delayed for an hour longer. At the end of it all, the patient jerks into life and utters his final words. "Well that was a waste of fucking time then". A fun record of guitar based fun but NOT one of the albums you must hear before you die.

This is fine

Listened to about half...I think it influenced future bands that were popular in the 90s but it still was not, good

Meh. But I didn’t hate it.

Indie-90's meh. Kinda like the Strokes without any catchy pop tunes.

Did not like this much. Why is it making me anxious?

This did almost nothing for me. First, I had no idea they were Scottish. Second, how did Spin magazine ever rank this higher than Nirvana's Nevermind in 1991? I could see this having a heavy influence (or being heavily influenced?) by some of the Seattle sounds, but this isn't my cup of that Pennyroyal tea. The vocals are too mellow. The rock doesn't rock me. It just didn't do much for me overall.

I just didn’t get much out of this at all. It wasn’t bad I just didn’t get what I was supposed to enjoy about it.

Rock, 1991 -> 2

I've never heard this before. Our maybe I have and forgot.

I didn't dislike this, but it seems like the most generic form of this style. It's like a collection of the most boring Beach Boys. It's consistent and inoffensive, but a little soft and saccharine for my preference, so it's getting a 2 because I won't object to hearing it, but I won't be seeking it out either.

Some people that play their instruments at an intermediate level found a guy that can kind of sing and wrote an album with no interesting ideas and spent three minutes designing the cover

Think it’s quite one paced and don’t remember a single chorus.

Never got going on this

Not a fan of the guy's voice, but I liked it! Love the Walls of Sound.

Love the album art, didn’t love the tunes

Probably a good example of this sort of thing, but not to my taste. A bit twee for me.

Very moody 90’s teen movie vibes. I liked what you do to me, but the rest of them didn’t quite grab me tbh

I didn’t like this at all and I’m not sure why, since it sounded like a lot of other stuff I like.

Weak melodic wanna be's. Wanted to stop about track 7. Too poppy for me.

Nada remarcable supongo.

No sale

Could easily be missing something but this felt bland. Last song was at least a bit interesting but I didn't latch onto anything.

I enjoyed some music like this back in the 1990s. But this doesn't need to be on a list like this. Didn't do anything for me. I liken it to a chalky powdered sugar tablet of candy. Sure it's sugar but nothing to write home about.

It's fine, but I didn't need to hear it.

Dispensable.

Sounds like they are stuck in the 60s.

It a bit jangly samey most of the way through, with the exception of the excellent heavier tracks. Not bad, just won't listen to it again.

Liked it at first but got weird and repetitive

A group I was aware of but took not much notice as none of their music thrilled me at all. Plenty of alternative rock groups which I fancied more. Never heard this album before. It was just run of the mill stuff and nothing there to make me want to listen again. 2/5 18/4/24

2 - I was hoping to like this, but it was kind of nothing. Not bad, but I didn't really find anything here to grasp onto.

Bandwagonesque was voted 'album of the year' for 1991 by American music magazine Spin, famously beating Nirvana's landmark album Nevermind. Lol what? No.

I feel like this album happened but I didn’t really listen to it if that makes sense. I feel as though it just went by and I had it going but can’t recall. I believe it was average and usually ai would notice if something was outright horrible but there was absolutely nothing memorable about this.

I never really got into Big Star. This band sounds a lot like Big Star. I thought a lot of the songs sounded the same, not much in terms of variety. Also, the songs were kind of boring, like they’re 3-5 minute pop songs that felt far too long. There’s definitely better power pop out there. Not sure how this made the list to be honest. It’s not really innovative, it sounds like it could’ve come out in the 70s but it came out 20 years later. It’s listenable but nothing to write home about.

This album just felt colorless and boring. I don't have much to say, which is how this album feels to listen to. Fav track: Is This Music?

Borderline between rock and metal-rock.

The music is fine but nothing special. They weren't the first to have this sound. Personal Enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

Best Song: Star Sign. I liked the extended guitar thing at the beginning. Worst Song: Alcoholiday. An especially whiny track on an album chalk full of whiny tracks. Overall: No one is getting excited about this, least of all the singer. Everything delivered through a relatively unemotional monotone. The musical equivalent of hospital fluorescent lights.

Not for me

This is forgettable

I like that this album's claim to fame is it won over an album it shouldn't have. The music itself is pretty boring for me. Will I listen to again: 5%

This wasn't bad, but I'm also questioning why it was in a list of 1001 albums you MUST listen to before you die. Really?

The jangly and bland stuff that would inspire the absolute worst Britpop. But then there's a track on here called Satan and it's kind of insane.

I'm skeptical that this should be on the list.

This album sounds like some Hollywood producers wrote a movie about a fictitious 60's garage group with shiny boy band vocals. It's ok for what it is but I wouldn't have included it on this list. Maybe it could be replaced with I Forget Where We Were by Ben Howard.

Generic 90s music. 2/5

This beat Nirvana to the Grammy. In one sense, I get it. It does predict the 90s principal sound better - Fanclub limped so Oasis and a million members of the English Rock Defence League (rest in power Neil Kulkarni) could plod. It ends with the track Is This Music? Yes, it is, but the difference between a raw potato and a chip is heat. Both are food but I only crave one of these things.

Not really. (Not the worst though). The concept - music is good. Bit too much of the three chord trick. Not enough to interest me. A 2.

Ik stoor me gewoon aan de lead vocal

Enh. It's okay, but nothing to write home about. I could easily live my life by not listening to it again and be okay.

Hipster

Couldn't get into this at all.

I really don't remember anything about this album.

I got Copper Blue by Sugar from this generator a few days ago, and though that album and this one are both alternative-rock albums that I don’t think are important or impactful enough to be on this list, I rated this album a 2 because this really left no impression on me.

boring middle of the road rubbish

Power pop. Muy rollo. Un 2.

Never my style. Guitar work/style is thin

1.5 good songs. Mostly done a dozen.

Meh, pretty boring. 2.3.

These guys use the AC/DC formula of making all their songs sound similar. It was hard to get through the entire album without feeling like I had already heard this song before. Not really my style.

2 for every track. Why is this on the list?

two big tunes and a bit of wishful thinking

Really just kind of a slog to get through. Yet another example of the early 90s alt rock sound I just cannot get into. It sounds so...I dunno...plastic? I don't think drums should sound like that. They feel so soulless and just add to the thin production across the board. I'm also not a big fan of overdrive powerchords throughout an entire song. Bring a little levity to your guitars, do something fun with them. It's not a punk record, so stop playing like punk. I have the same question as the last track on the record, which incidentally may be the best on the record.

not in the mood

1991. Pretty forgettable alt rock. The final track "Is This Music?" is ironically the most musical/best song.

Good god there's a lot of punk on this list. Yuck.

Would I listen to this album again? No Were there any songs I skipped? December - It wasn't on Spotify Comments? Forgettable album. Favourite Songs? Star Sign

Never was a member of the Fanclub. Strong Big Star influences with a touch of Lemonheads.

unmemorable

Just bland. I thought there was something maybe promising in the first track, but it never developed. I was hoping for something with more bite, more subversive. Highlights: - The Concept - Satan

Wholly unimpressive but not terrible. This sounds like much of the drab pop-indie of today, so I guess there always has to be the forefather… the vocals are smothered in reverb and mixed to be quieter than the melody. The lyrics, from what I cared to pay attention to sang of cliche subjects and are forgettable.

Not my favorite. Pretty repetitive. Is This Music was a redeeming end to the album, but that was about it.

The Concept starts it off by with some nice guitar work and solo at the end which got me excited for the album. It then goes and starts sounding very Oasis-ey, not sure if that was just the style in the early 90s but a lot of bands sounded very similar. But it is a very generic music style that is so inoffensive that it is not impressive. Halfway through the album and its business as usual just sounding like a very run of the mill alternative album. It really makes me wonder why albums like this are on this list of albums we have to listen to while working. There is nothing wrong with it at all and its quite nice to listen to. But it is nothing special at all. Every single song sounds the exact same to me on this album. I have actually downgraded this from a 3 to a 2 as it went on because of how boring this album is. The longer it went on made me like it less and less. Is This Music? to end it was alright, it at least brought something new to the album. But still a middling 2 for me.

Never heard of this band in my life. First song started boring as hell but love the jam at the end. I'm on Star Sign and it's kinda starting to piss me off. Sounds like kinda bland rock. Has some solid guitar parts to it but nothing special. Got real boring towards the end. ERRRRRR

Not much of anything

This was the 90's pop rock equivalent of Derek and the Dominos

# 89 : OMG another 90's Brit Pop Custard album. Enough already, I'm off to listen to Supertramp instead. Fav track : none, but I Don't Know was the best for me. Listened : 17/10/2023

Way too many repetitive songs. Each song is basically a 30 second loop for 3 minutes

Inget för mig

Irrelevant background music

Got bored

Teenage fanclubilla on muistaakseni jotain hyvääkin tavaraa, mutta täällä sitä ei ollut. Tosin kuulosti todella 2000-luvulta, mikä on yllättävää. Muuten yllätyksetöntä ja tylsää.

Musiikki, josta he pitävät ja jonka parissa ovat kasvaneet, ei ole näin hempeän tepastelevaa. Miksi tämä on? Huom. "koukku" ei ole pohjimmiltaan rakenteellinen elementti.

i have to imagine the use of microsoft paint for the album cover was a lot cooler and edgier in 1991 than 2023. regardless, i am here to focus on the music. on the whole, teenage fanclub's bandwagonesque left something to be desired. it had an early sound of alternative or indie music. some songs were better than others; i felt like teenage fanclub found more of their groove with "is this music?" 2.5, close to a 3 but not quite.

Meh, it just became background noise after the a few songs.

Way too pop influenced alt-rock. The song "Is This Music?" really reminds me of another song that I can't place. Someone probably sampled the riff. It is probably my favorite song from the album though. The album is not completely bad but it's just not my taste.

This band was on my radar for a while but I never bothered to actually check them out. I remember them being on an old SNL back when Comedy Central would show episodes from the '90s as filler material. That's all I knew going in. It's all pretty underwhelming. It's just Capital M Meh. It's Hard to decide between 2 and 3. I'm going 2 with this one because of whatever rag it was that said this was better than Nevermind lolololololololol

Never heard of these before, was fine but didn't inspire me really. It starts off well - the opening track is a good, but not electric opener (it lacks a bit of pace and energy), but it doesn't really accelerate from there. My favourite track - and the only one I'll save to listen to again - is the closer, which is a guitar-led instrumental that works really well. Feels a bit harsh to give them a 2, given they're quite early proponents of this type of music that I generally quite like, but what came later really improved on this, so 2 it is.

This is like an "uncanny valley" for my ears. This sounds very 90s. I generally like 90s music. This even sounds like music I like but I do not like this at all.

Don't remember hearing about this group in the 90's, but I don't think I would have been into them then. Definitely not into it now. Just not much going on to hold my interest.

So, this is fine. It's just ok. I read about this album and it beat Nevermind as best album of 1991 in Spin magazine. Wtf. That makes me wanna rate it lower. 2.49/5

This one didn't do much for me

Not really interesting to me. Before I knew it it was over and nothing caught my attention.

It's OK. Very typical 90's grunge sound though.

Sounds like a 90’s garage rock band but with 60’s vocal harmonies and melody.

Scottish band with this album sounding as your average boring American group. More a sleeping pill than music, in my opinion. This was rated by 'Spin magazine' as album of the year, above e.g. Nirvana's Nevermind (Wiki)? For me a moderate compromise between shoegaze like Slowdive, grunge like Nirvana and guitar music like e.g. Husker Du or Sonic Youth. Those are all brilliant and this is far from it.

this was a mediocre shoegaze that i've already forgotten

This is the album that finally convinced me I'm living a lie. And I'm not even sure I even listened to it.

Power pop. Muy rollo. Un 2.

This album was kind of all over the place stylistically, with 90s alt rock music moments but 60s Beach Boys-esque singing/simple songs. Overall, a bit boring and forgettable

This sounded undeveloped and wasn't very entertaining. Not sure why this needed to be on the list.

This music could have been written, performed and produced by high school boys in a garage. This is not a compliment. The lyrics were incredibly juvenile.

2/5. Nothing notable in here for me

Pas fan du genre Ça provoque absolument aucune émotion chez moi, mais c'est pas inaudible non plus

I have big mixed feelings about this album. From the outset my initial reaction was "why is this on this list? it's generic alternative, surely there must be more than 1000 albums better than this." I still think that stands to some degree. But I also hear moments of greatness in this album, and wonder what might have happened if it had been pushed in a harder, less poppy direction. The multipart harmonies (which Wikipedia notes were encouraged by their producer because no contemporaries were doing it) are the biggest problem for me - the rest of the instrumentation is alternative with shades of shoegaze and indie rock elements, but then you get these tight, highly produced multipart harmonies that don't fit. Ultimately I'm sticking with a 2 here because so much of this album is just generic and blah... but also especially in the back half I feel like I hear potential just below the surface.

That was an album alright. Had a few decent tracks here and there but overall not very memorable.

Is This Music? Yes. Do I want to listen to it a bunch? Not really certain.

There are some good tracks on here but some stuff that is the sort of conflict free alt rock that appeals to people who dont really like alt rock

Ну начало было бодреньким на 3, остальное фоном как-то прошло, так что 2+

Maybe I’ve heard too much of the indie bands that came after this and which were influenced by it, but I was surprisingly unmoved by this. Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Not sure I could pick any of the songs out of it

Ystäväpiiristä löytyy soittajaporukkaa jotka olis jo 1991 tehnyt ihan yhtä hyvän levyn kuin nämä heput, huom. 8v vanhana...

Aika basic

Decent I guess

This album artwork comes to you courtesy of a straight up MS Paint nightmare. Jesus Christ. Unfortunately the music isn’t much better than this abysmal cover. But it’s just okay enough to save it from 1 star.

Hmmmm 4? That album cover is undoubtedly made in MS paint. 3 Uninteresting 2

A nice, easy, middle-of-the-road listen. It's good, but nothing of note to remember.

The first time I listened to this, it just sort of melted out of my memory having made very little impact. It all sort of blended together in the same sound. Then I read it was picked by Spin as "Album of the Year" over Nirvana's Nevermind in 1991. Wait... what? And then more and more accolades! Listening again, I caught a little more of it. Okay, it's fine. Score goes up a notch. But what am I missing? What am I missing? It's still not great! Third time, I'm wondering why I'm trying so hard. This isn't worth it. Score goes back down a notch. Is there some sensory receptor I'm lacking? A piece of my soul?

This did not appeal to me. I found it boring at best, for most of the album. In fact, the first time I listened, I fell asleep the second track in. Okay, I was exhausted and not even trying to stay awake. On second listen, I kind of wished that I was asleep... In both cases, while asleep and while awake, the last track did catch my ear a bit.

Given the benefit of hindsight, this is a pretty ordinary album that doesn't belong on this list. [Hint hint nudge nudge to the curators here, things are not set in stone, you know!]

There's a reason why this band didn't make a bigger splash, or stayed in the collective memory of a generation. It's just not good. I don't care how influential (allegedly) they were, this was a lame album.

Just another teenage dirtbag

very 90s, kinda fun but not memorable

It was fun! I had a good time. Nothing super standout. Loved the Beatles-y sound and melody writing. As an album it’s a little empty in the middle, but I liked some of the cuter songs like Metal Baby.

Very much a forgettable album. Did nothing for me.

Generic; every track screams "Here's the band that influenced this one!" Okay for teenagers at the time but definitely dated.

It was certainly an album

This record reminded me of how much I love My Bloody Valentine's Loveless.

Last two songs are great. Unfortunately it's a bunch of garbage in order to get there.

kinda like a more tame pop version of velvet underground 20 years later 2.5

Already forgot about this one, probably wont listen ever again.

This could be the most boring club I've ever been to. The first track is a little gem and there's a few other nice and catchy moments, but really a few... This material could not stand as a full album, it sounds like a rehearsal of ideas that have not been completed.

not for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really mediocre album. Can't see how this is something I needed to hear before I died.

I really do not understand the appeal of this album. Almost everything feels so simple and dull and basic. The vocals are so low effort and the instrumentation is just boring for most of the songs. The last song is the only that stood out to me. 4/10

didn’t love

Some songs were ok, didn't like it on the whole

Alright album. Defenitely not something i Will listen to again but it was fine A little to "messy" for my taste. Even tho i enjoy similair artist it didnt really work for me

College rock from what I heard.

It's... fine I guess? There's nothing much here, to be honest. It comes off a little watered-down and kind fake. It's like it's not even really rock and roll. It's just rock-flavored music. I feel like Teenage Fanclub is the cheese pizza of rock music. If you like pizza, you're going to be okay with plain cheese pizza. But if someone starts telling you that their favorite pizza is plain cheese, you start questioning whether or not they have the palate of a child. Similarly, if someone told me that their favorite band was Teenage Fanclub, I'd start to question their taste in music.

Pretty boring teenage rock.

rather boring, very few highlights

Decent musicians and vocalists, but the songs really didn't do much for me. How Spin Magazine voted this "Album of the Year" in 1991 over Nirvana's Nevermind is beyond me. Am I missing something?

It was ok. Some interesting moments. Not sure if I'll revisit it. I did really like the ending song for some reason.

Perfectly inoffensive. Pretty, even. But not a single track grabbed me or made me want to dig in more. I could never make something so nice myself, but “nice” doesn’t define this list of 1001+

Pretty blah. Not a single memorable song.

Sounds like if you gave the Beatles from the “it’s been a hard days night” era and gave them an electric guitar and showed them Hendrix.

Fairly forgettable. Pleasant enough early 90s indie. The kind of thing I listened to at the time but I don't really remember much teenage fanclub. Maybe sparkys dream but that's not on this album. All in all a bit samey and not helped by a lack of nostalgia.

Meh. A time capsule of the early 90s.

Indie que não despertou grande interesses.

Did nothing for me

I thought I was going to like this at first, but it's pretty lame. It's like Weezer, but somehow worse.

If Michael Owen was a 90s brit-pop kinda band, he'd be Teenage Fanclub. This might be the most inoffensive record I've ever heard but the caveat to this is that it's just not very interesting, although 'The Concept', and 'Star Sign' provide brief but welcome distractions. It's better than Leonard Cohen, so there's that.

I did not know this band. Maybe it deserves a second change, but I did not like too much.

It's fine. I should say more and maybe mention that these guys were integral to the third wave power pop sound of the 90's, but I found this album too boring to find motivation for writing.

Shoegaze indierock classic back in the day. In retrospect it sounds dated and gets boring after a few songs

I think I enjoyed it but I honestly can't remember a single track, which isn't generally a great sign.

Kjedelig.

i think you can tell by now i'm not really fond of the british. i'm sorry. it's not you, it's me.

Pretty bland.

Liked some of the songs on this album but a few were "just noise" to me

Powerpop my ass. I don't hate this. I can see how it may have inspired Weezer and the like. It's pretty vapid. But I spose that's the point.

Pretty generic 90s alt rock. Close to a 1 star but had some alright moments.

No se. La verdad es que no se. No me interesó.

How is this better than Nirvana's Nevermind, Spin Magazine? It's watery garage rock. Yea this is like shitty Oasis.

Decent! Nothing too special. *December

Two halfway decent tracks bookend the rest of an LP filled with pure schmaltz. Disappointing to see the slight sparks of something different in the lengthy opener and shoegazey closer completely snuffed by the insipid melodies and eye-gouging repetition of lyrics such as "I know/ but I don't know" and "I love your walk/ I love your talk."

Bob Dylan won the coveted  Pulitzer Prize "for his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." (https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/bob-dylan)  I'm sure Norman  Blake is expecting the same for his brilliant and provocative  lyrics to "What You Do To Me." For a joke I searched lyrics meaning for that song to see if anyone could find something useful to say, One dude pointed out that he says knee rather than knees once. Profound for sure. So Spin Mag voted this 1991 album of the year ahead of Nevermind. Hmmm. Whoever made that decision must feel silly especially when they see the verdict the learned listening audience of the 1001 App. rendered on the relative standing of these two albums. When I listened I couldn't help but think that this is a glaring example of formula music that was adopted by the radio stations that used to have  EDGE. Those stations clung to the term "alternative rock" and convinced their listeners it was alternative rather than same old, same old formulae music. Anyway, I had lots of extra time today so I listened to this album three times. I'm sad to report that the formula actually works and it was downright scary to watch it work on me.  On the third time through, I actually started toe tapping and the formula resulted in a +1 to my rating.  Pure Evil!

For a ’91 release I find the music fairly ordinary. The lyrics too aren’t too inspiring, though a definite step up from ACDC. I’m not a fan of the second (feedback) song, I thought it should have been buried deep on side 2. Speaking of deep on side 2, I like the final track "Is this Music?" with it’s bag pipes feel.

Not for me, is this music and December are stand out tracks.

Not great, not bad. I liked the instrumentals but nothing really popped out to me to warrant a place on 1001 albums that you need to listen to.

Got half way through and to be honest just got a bit bored - too much jangly guitar for me and not enough variety in the sound.

It's...fine. Not super interesting. It's okay. Starts off rough, and gets better, but never really gets great. I think I probably could have died without hearing it.

Lol this is just so forgettable and meh…

boh.. sembrano oasis ma peggio

It was alright. Nothing too special about this album in my opinion. 2/5 stars.

I'm glad the first song wasn't an indicator of quality because it was trash. Star Sign is...fine. The rest just all sounds the same. Not a huge fan.

Oli siinä biisejä ainakin

Not that good

Decent enough but nothing really stood out to me.

Not bad, but not good. Forgettable.

Halfway through and so far feels like a 1. Just not that interested in it. Maybe a 2, couple tracks were OK, sounded like something off the end of an Earthed dvd. 2/5

It's a weird album that I was listening to as a teenager. Seems very old. A lot more influence from Big Star than I remember.

Production: 5/20 Songwriting: 10/20 Innovation: 10/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 5/20 = maybe I wasn’t properly paying attention but I was underwhelmed

struggled with this one, pretty bland to me.

Nothing particularly interesting

Ok, not my thing

Not bad

I haven't liked very much

very noise-pop

Better than I thought!

Sad 90's teens in a garage band. As an adult hard to listen to. Meh 2/5

It was ok

Never listened to Teenage Daydream before, but glad to have heard it. Kinda generic 90's-type power ballads, but some catchy tracks here and there. Highlights: -Star Sign -Is This Music?

Kind of blah

Production: 5/20 Songwriting: 10/20 Innovation: 10/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 5/20 =30 maybe I wasn’t properly paying attention but I was underwhelmed

Didn't like it. Very poppy. Not my taste.

It was fine. Not sure why this was on this list but everyone has their taste

This one was not my jam. It doesn't fall as far as a single star, but also doesn't rise high enough to merit another listen. 2 stars.

it doesn't sound that great, mostly just forgettable alt rock songs

Forgettable rock. "The Concept" is pretty good and I'll listen to that again, but it's like four white boys making sloppy alt rock that's pretty indistinguishable. Vocals aren't really notable either. I'll give it a fat two.

Eh. Not bad but eh

Title of the last track: Is This Music - this tells everything to me!

Never heard of this band before. This is the most insipid, uninspiring shit I have heard in my life. This type of "college rock" is supposed to.be fun at the least, but this album can't even manage that Garbage.

06/18 Generic, bland, unmemorable

🥱 next

wow this sucks its like a record exec said find some nice fellas to do some love songs and put a little a that seattle sound the kids like on it, did not finish

Nothing about this stood out. It was normal in every way. Frankly surprised it was picked up by a label, let alone selected as 1001 albums

Eh, it was okay. Kind of Green Day-ish.

kinda generic, nothing memorable, but fine to listen I guess, maybe i would like it more if i found it in my teens or something

I knew I didn’t like Teenage Fanclub

Melody-heavy alternative rock built on jangly guitars, steady drums, and relaxed, harmonized, smooth, conversational vocals. Listening to it feels like a long drive through okaish and unchanging countryside—monotone familiar scenery passing by without much variation. Despite its tuneful warmth, the experience ultimately lacks depth and feels boring from the start.

Wow, this was made in a lab to annoy me. Poppy but no hooks, insipid lyrics, boring droning snooze-inducing vocals, tries to get heavy but fails, what was Cobain thinking!?

Nothing outstanding or remarkable, it's another in the 1001 albums that you wonder why it's included
