Reviews (page 2 of 8)

Really enjoyed this album. It was completely new to me.

5/5 Great music. Funk at its core, but this is so much more. Soul, even fusion sounding. A great listen, a great experience.

Damn this second track is super dreamy. I like it! I love Strawberry Letter 23. I didn't know that was him!! 5 stars.

Oh Otis...

amazing geweldig super 10/10 album

It’s a very nice 5. The Wikipedia page for this album mentions some positive comparisons to Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye, and while I don’t quite hear as much of Stevie, I certainly hear a bit of Marvin. The funk & groove this thing gives off feels like a softer version of what Marvin was doing on “Let’s Get It On”, but it still contains just as much soul behind it. The first half of the album feels really nice, and even though sometimes the lyrics get a little strange, the vocals more than lift them up to help sell the mood. It’s made me get even more frustrated by that fucking “Nixon” album we got the other day, as this album succeeds brilliantly at letting its instrumentals guide the mood of each track without some cumbersome vocals getting in the way. Shuggie Otis, who I’ve never heard of before today, played just about every instrument & composed every song here, along with taking lead vocals, & his talent shines through really nicely. His only crime is that his vocals are just a little quiet at points, but I feel like that’s an intentional choice. The back half of the album is almost entirely instrumental, and it’s in those moments where this album’s full ability to capture a vibe reveals itself. They fly by wonderfully, and they all sound as satisfying as a good night’s sleep. My only real nitpick with the back half is that I think the album should’ve ended on “Pling!”, as it could have kept going for another 2-3 minutes without missing a beat. “Pling!” feels like modern day vaporwave, which is kind of impressive for 1974, and it really is just a delight to sit in. “Not Available” didn’t feel as satisfying by comparison, though it’s still got a good funk to it. Ultimately, it’s an album that you just have to hear to really get it, and I’m very glad that I did hear it. It’s a shame that Shuggie seemingly got in his own way after this album & has only made one since, given the attempts to success handed to him on a silver platter that he apparently just kept turning down. I mean, seriously; a chance to tour with the Rolling Stones & have an album produced by Quincy Jones at his peak, and you turn them BOTH down? That’s financial malpractice. Regardless, I’m glad this is here on the list for it to get some well-deserved flowers, and I think it’s a pretty easy 5.

Coldplay left me well, cold

This is more my vibe. I don't have enough musical knowledge to explain why I prefer this, but I guess it's that it sounds interesting while also being upbeat? Personally, I think that when you focus on the instruments, you end up making more interesting phrases. Or maybe I've always been better at listening to the instruments than to the vocals

Beautiful album. Favorite track: Strawberry Letter 23

I think it's a cool album just for the evening calm sunny evening

Funky soul genius

This is like Herbie Hancock but better. What made Head Hunters weak was that the songs got boring fast, but this is keeping my attention throughout. The first song just grabs attention and holds onto it. I know that I need to listen to more jazz fusion, and this album is such a good introduction to this genre. Each song has its own sound and each sound tickles my brain in a good way.

- GROOVY. Realized while listening that one of the songs on this album is in my playlist of harry styles music recs🥲 And I can definitely see a lot of influences on Harry’s music and the Harry’s House era! (Happy House, Strawberry Letter 23, Ice Cold Daydream just based on titles alone!). PRETTY LIGHTS SAMPLE NOTICED. Wow i’m loving this album. Hahah also BigXThaPlug sample from Sweet Thang. - Standout Songs: Pling & Freedom Flight (added to focus playlist), Strawberry Letter 23 (PL sample!)

Loved it! Funky and soulful and very interesting

What an incredible album, I absolutely loved it!!!

freedom flight is a solid 10/10

Smooth as fuck

Funky, warm, wonderful.

a Cool like no other. so intimate and funky, it’s cerebral. even after all this time, it still sounds so fresh and influential.

What an album! Loved the music - it puts me in such a flow for work (i listen to music during work) that i forget it's there. That's kind of perfect for those work days when i need something more than Eunadi's albums. Added it to my work albums list. More from Shuggie Otis please!

Behövdes efter Massive Attack. Fan vad bra det är!! 70-talet fortsätter att leverera.

really beautiful… lowkey 5??

This is awesome. I knew Strawberry Letter 23, but wow… I want to listen to this whole album a few times in a row once I get Aht Uh Mi Head off repeat. Sweet Thang rules! And Inspiration Info! And Island Letter! And XL-30! Okay, every song is so cool. FIVE STARS PAY OR DISPUTE

I would absolutely have sex with you to this one (side one only though)

Really enjoyed this one

Funky Fresh! Great fucking album! I had not heard this album straight through before. Full of highlights! Will be adding it into my forever expanding rotation of albums to listen to. Sets the mood just right!

Love. Never knew til today. Bluesy and great instruments. Shades of BB King. It’s a keeper.

A genre-defying album that's very easy to listen to, but with lots of variety to hold the interest. I like it a lot and will add it to my Tidal library.

It is brilliant.

Love me some Shuggie

I loveeee

So damn good and exactly what I needed today. We should just have Snuggie Otis days where people fuck off, listen to this music, and dance.

I think the term "background music" is generally misunderstood. It's mistaken to be something pejorative, describing music not worthy of your full attention. I absolutely love good background music. I love music that I can put and just creates a wonderful mood and atmosphere without needing to dominate my complete attention. I think it is every bit as important and valuable as any other kind of music. And in terms of good background music, as my friend Jules would say, this some real gourmet shit.

A great album. I have a vague memory of having heard of the musician before. I listened to the album for the first time today and really enjoyed it. I'll listen to it again. 5/5

Classic. Strawberry Letter is all time!

Funky and worth grovin on. Nice find!

it was quick but i enjoyed!!!

Lovely surprise!

Love this album. It was already on my list.

❤️

Wow, skikkelig fint! En ny favoritt.

this is this list at its best, when the music is so worthwhile and original. i thoroughly enjoyed it

10/10 on apple music (and probably other places too) this album was released with a bonus album of unreleased tracks called Wings of Love, and— while I loved Inspiration Information — Wings of Love was just so surprisingly modern! or I guess a better term would be post-retro? most of those songs sound like they would be sampled in some hella fresh vaporwave, and some of them sound like they already have but yeah, all in all, a super enjoyable album :)

the funkiest! Great grooves and vibes

Original, funky, soulful masterpiece.

What this project is about for me discovering new music I never would have gave a chance love the groove and the funkiness. Even the instrumental tracks are great my favourite on the list so far

Oh, it's mellow. Very mellow. I feel like i'm in a hot tub listening to this, being strummed to sleep. And I really mean that - it has an almost gloomy vibe, while still remaining bright and happy. Like an apathy of sorts. Not sad, but not particularly happy. A melancholic vibrancy, almost. Just very... mellow, and moody. And funky, of course. Do I like funk now? I think I might. There's so many layers and sounds, and each song changes so much throughout yet still stays recognisable and consistent. I'm a big fan of more ambient (i.e. lyricless) music, and this is a fantastic album for that, about half the songs are pure music. It's an entirely different experience when there aren't any words, to me it's a fundamentally difference category of music. The opening to Freedom Flight is one of the most gorgeous things i've ever heard - the soft noise of windcatchers underneath and incredible, slow guitar bars - gorgeous. The layers work incredibly well, then the saxophone comes in and it's like heading to another planet. I've never enjoyed a song longer than 5 minutes more, to be honest. The whole album is very magical and atmospheric, really loved listening to this. Most / Least Favourite Track(s): Hard as I discovered that the original album didn't have the final four songs until a 2001 reissue, and they're from his former album. Freedom Flight, Ice Cold Daydream and Strawberry Letter 23 would all be vowing for first, but if I limit to the "original" tracklist then it's Aht Uh Mi Hed - the various noises throughout this are especially fun to listen to, the little keyboard melody that plays throughout is addictive, the occasional flute, and I swear I even heard an eagle cawing at one point (if wrong then i'm joking), title track close second / XL-30, but "least" is doing some heavy lifting here, I loved the whole album head to tail, but this one did sound like Grandma got a bit excited on the church organ. Rating: 5, probably only 4 if it were confined to the original tracklist.

I was surprised by the quality of the music. I never knew that he ain't the original Strawberry Letter 23 and penned it for his then girlfriend.

Super rad album Lots of cool tones and sounds

There is something almost delicious about the instrumentation on this album

I felt this one in my soul, I think this has to be one of my favourite genres

Richtig geil Funky, instrumentals, toll

Really good

That's a smooth jam

never heard this artist before, not bad

This is that good shit, funky psychedelic soul. Every song hits just right and peaks with "Strawberry Letter 23". I've been vibing this for the last 25 years after, of all places, hearing a cover of "Strawberry Letter 23" by Zero 7 at one of their concerts where it was sung by Sia Furler (Pre Sia Sia) and Sophie Barker... Good times.

Love me some Shuggie. Wish it was Saturday morning and I was stoned.

Equal parts funky, eclectic, and peaceful, and enjoyable throughout.

Inspiration Information finds Shuggie Otis in prime form, oozing confidence and brilliance through his fingertips in a way that would look pathetic in the hands of lesser musicians. This kind of coolness on display here, in all honesty, has been the backbone of what has come from the soul genre these last few years and the lineage can be traced to Shuggie. All killer, no filler.

I’d never heard of this artist. What a trip! It’s a pure mood album and a great listen.

Damn. I mean, funk yeah, this album hits the unexpected bullseye. Wildly fantastic and I hope that others like it.

I went in not expecting too much and came out feeling like I experienced something.

This day I learned about a legend

Great low-key funk with some excellent guitar work! I’ll definitely be coming back to this!

What is this soulful sorcery and where has it been all my life?

Snuggie Otis sir, you are a magician. This album is so smooth man. The perfect joint for a relaxing Sunday afternoon or even doing stuff around the house. I love this!

WOW. Had no knowledge of Shuggie, but loved this brief masterpiece. His rhythms kept part of my body in continual movement and his clear, sweet voice was pleasing on the non instrumental songs. I’ll listen to more Shuggie. Glad for the intro.

My favorate album in this list so far. When funk music gets groovy, catchy yet relaxing to listen to, this is how it feels like.

I will return to this album. It was enjoyable from start to finish and I especially liked how there were both fast and slow songs but nothing felt out of place. It was also fun to listen to the music because I could clear hear each individual instrument being played.

Shuggie's addictive confection of funk and psychedelic soul is even sweeter than his namesake.

Soulful and excellent

Despite a slight lean into instrumentation in the third quarter, this album is spectacular. Smooth funk, where the Standouts are Inspiration Information, Island Letter, Aht Uh Mi Hed, Strawberry Letter 23, and Freedom Flight.

Absolutely loved this. Have already listened to the album a few times through. Also loved the related music Spotify played after it finished. 5 stars all round.

This album is fire! Great sound - funky, clean, pure. 5/5

i have literally never heard of this album and its honestly criminal that i hadnt.. hidden gem on god 4.6/5

Awesome. Unreal guitar. Sounds like Miguel

Beautiful album. The type of album to chill out after a long day of work.

A very chill, feel-good synth funk record that I could absolutely see myself putting on while working or chilling out. The warm, early 70s analog synth and drum machine sounds are so cozy and well-done. Nothing earth-shattering, but very good music. 4.5 leaning 5.

Das gefällt mir: langsam, schnell, Funk, Rock, Jazz

Super! Chilli vibes!

Nice walking jams, need to think about properly sitting down to listen to these as I’m sure it became background gumpf to just mulling over the day’s plans

Shuggie is The Best

What a great find!! So much talent

it's so beautiful, 70s aesthetic, didn't get bored with it. heck if this is "elevator music" for most people then it's great "elevator music". i had so much fun and will probably listen to it again.

70s lofi. Great stuff

This is everything you want from a soul album and more! Amazing!

Shuggie Otis I never really heard this record but I love it. I could hear its influence on some of my favorite music. Such a cool voice and vibe. Also really great guitar playing. Also cool how he plays all the parts except for horns and strings. Old drum machine sounds are cool too especially on the instrumental tunes xl-30 and pling Groove on “not available” is so cool. I didn’t remember hearing the original strawberry 23- so different . I love the outro Ice cold daydream feels so good Freedom flight reminds me of “in a silent way” George Duke is so great I realized after that the last few songs were from other albums that they tagged on to the rerelease. Great album and will definitely need to listen more. 5

Love this record! This was one of my faves in high school/college but haven’t listened in a while. Its grant and cohesive all the way through. All the grooves and sounds are so cool, love the guitar playing. All the songs are really great and the instrumentals are really cool too. Sharon Jones does a great cover of inspiration information

Thought I had never heard of him before, then along comes Strawberry Letter 23, and whoa, mind blown. Oh! Album is awesome. Another buried treasure unearthed.

It's been a long time since this app has turned me, head over heels, into a fan of an artist I had barely heard of before. And it had to happen with Shuggie Otis. I only knew that Shuggie was the son of impresario, songwriter and musician Johnny Otis, of "Hound Dog" fame, but I didn't expect to immediately fall in love with this very, very special album. "Inspiration Information" is indeed a one-of-a-kind mix between progressive soul, enticing jazz dirges, psychedelic flourishes and proto-acid jazz instrumentals with cheap electronic rhythm patterns, all of this in 1974! "Aht Uh Mi Hed" is a ballad for the ages, which sees Shuggie using the hypnotic early drum machines once used in *There's A Riot Going On* so as to here create something smoother and far more delicate than what Sly Stone had created on his side. Those strings in the bridge section sent shudders down my spine right away. It's a shame this gem is not as well-known as it should be. The second side mostly comprising instrumental cuts is quite hypnotic as well. I would even dare to say that through this second side, Otis crafted the sort of timeless experimental split album that Bowie released not so long after. Under that light, *Inspiration Information* would be like a soul/funk version of *Low* or *"Heroes"* somehow--it's just that here the template is African American music instead of Glam Rock/Krautrock. At 30 minutes, this album is very short, but if you buy the 2001 reissue, you have four extra tracks from Otis' previous LP *Freedom Flight*, and they are gems as well--especially the 12-minute jazz odyssey that its title track was. But even without those four extra tracks, chances are that *Inspiration Information* is well worth your time if you're at least a little interested in progressive soul. Adding this great, great album to my list of essential keepers. And buying it right away. Number of albums left to review: 393 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 272 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 144 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 193

Absolute gem from someone I've never heard of, nice one 1001.

Faaaark yes, really enjoyed this album. Going to try and find it on vinyl.

Toimii.. voi jopa harkita uudelleenkuuntelua..

Fantastic Soul album, really one you can sit down and enjoy on a Sunday evening

Sonzao, instrumental top

A warm hug of an album, with hints & echoes of a bunch of artists from Clapton to Prince, Funkadelic to Donovan. An artist I had never heard of, but really enjoyed and look forward to listening to again

Sweeeeeet

A very very strong five stars for this one. Never heard of him but obviously incredibly influential on a lot of people. Listened to it five or six times now and loved it more every time.

I’m not sure if I believe in divine inspiration, but this album is making me believe in extraterrestrial inspiration. This album stands out with no clear predecessors or successors. Funky!

this is so sick! funky but also weirdly shoegazey? for an album from the early 70s it sounds shockingly modern but also extremely old. really really great

Really enjoyed this. Funky and relaxing.

Funky as hell, i love this one!

Exactly my kind of music. Chill, funky and dreamlike.

Otis was a good guitar player before and after the sessions documented here but this recording captures a very special moment, one where everything clicked. A true classic.

Great soul / funk album. I always thought the production could be a bit less lo-fi, but it does not matter.

Wasn't expecting to like this but instantly did and head nodded all the way through - in a word 'funky' 4.6

So good

What a gorgeous album and what a find?!? So pleased to be introduced to Shuggie Otis too, I will certainly be listening to his other albums now! Really enjoying the jazz r&b blues and other great sounds of this. Also love the ideas behind the lyrics. Highlights included inspiration information with its squelchy bouncy beats and lush guitar parts. Such a top fee good track. And also Strawberry Letter 23, really cool idea for a song.

lovely vibe

This album is ultra-smooth. I especially love ‘Strawberry Letter 23’, and, while a very unique thought, ‘Rainy Day’ would maybe be a good basis for a mellow electronic song.

I really really enjoyed this, it was very chill and groovy

Now THIS is some easy listening funk and soul! Perfect album to just chill out to.

Very dope.

it felt so good listening to this

liked it. music to play if you own a studio apartment in ny and want to impress your date.

Sweet shit.

Masterpiece of instrumental music. Really good and groundbreaking loved it and nothing to add. 5/5

Hear influences of/from Grateful Dead, Beastie Boys, Tod Rundgren , Tommy Bolin, and Al Greene. Even the Casio synth beats are great.

Wow! This is the most wildly varied funk/soul album. I am so blown away by it. And is this the original of the mighty Strawberry Letter no. 23? One of the best tunes ever. It's surprisingly experimental. Can't believe it flopped at the time too, it's got tunes!

this was great, glad im doing this 1000 albums thing.

Two of my favorite musical flavors: psychedelia and soul, perfectly balanced here, with early drum machines to boot! I remember when this was reissued on CD in 2001 and me and my friends devoured this album. Hearing these irresistible tunes and finding out it wasn't particularly well received in its time blew my mind and sent me on a neverending quest to find similar "lost" albums - but I'm not sure I'll ever find one that is both as amazingly ahead of its time and downright enjoyable as this one. Dude was 21!

Great!

This is excellent. Like Jarimoquai twenty years before Jarimoquai, with the added bonus of not having Jay Kay anywhere near it.

Superb album. Totally dig this vibe, definitely something that I'll spend more time listening to. Just really enjoy how loose and mellow this is all the way through. Also, if I have another kid, I'm naming it Shuggie.

A nice surprise. I like this one!

So awesome. Great mix of funk and soul with some early rock thrown on. I can see got this has been so influential for R&B

Vraiment une decouverte, bonne guitare, bonne production, du grouve du fumk il y a tout ce qu.il faut pour que j’aime. 4.95

A frente do seu tempo.

What a revelation. Mostly instrumental pieces that are smooth and funky. Didn't want it to end. And that cover? Sheesh.

This album is a hidden gem, and one of the greatest I have ever heard. Filled with smooth beats, analog drum machines, Shuggie's voice, this is all I could ever ask for from a '70s album. 100% relistening, it's a shame Shuggie Otis never got the recognition deserved for this genius album that was far ahead of its time. Favorite Tracks: Rainy Day and Pling!

Oh man i love this weird lo fi r & b funky record so much. Where has this been my whole life? He used to roll with zappa. Of course.

Very good funk type of music! No bad songs

😔🙏 merci pour les travaux

Perfect album. Soulful, jazzy, funky, and everything good.

Wow - this is the era and style I love - but why don't I know Shuggie Otis - it's hardly a forgettable name. But then pop on Strawberry Letter 23 and it's 'ohhhhh'. Lovely, warm, cuddly.

Smooth grooves, funk, and psychedelic love. So good.

Excellent. Finally an album I’ve not heard before that I really enjoyed listening to. Sounds like Shuggie could have been one of the greats but shied away from success after this release. Very impressive to write and perform that album at 21.

Loved it

Am I old? Because this was awesome. Jazzy noodle-y 70s guitar vibes. Gentle. Ground zero for the 70s revivalists bands. And as soon as I heard Freedom Flight I knew it was sampled or covered somewhere.

This is the first artist I hadn't heard of, and it is a fantastic album!* *Disclaimer: I'm white, so any RnB/Funk/Soul boggles my mind with its greatness!

Unexpected….chill while demanding attention.

Chilllllll

One of my all time favourite soul albums.

New sound for me, a new genre of music.

23rd July 2021 Listened on my phone in the morning and sent a recommendation in to the Blues Kitchen podcast. Absolutely loved this, saved it on Spotify. Summer, heat, waves, juice, all of it in one record. Stunning.

Amazing!!!

Funky, chilled, Shuggie must have listened to a lot of Jackie Mittoo

5/5 - has that Stevie Wonder feel to it; analog synths and a Jamiroquai flavour

Até as viajadas mais lounge no órgão valem a pena nesse álbum. Espetacular (a versão com 13 faixas, que vai até Freedom Flight).

This album rules. Love a modern sounding soul funk sound. Synths plus soul is such a good combo.

Nice surprise to find this

Pure surprise. This beauty is amazing.

LOVE the title song, so it was nice to be exposed to the rest of Shuggie's songs. Very chill and funky. I'll definitely be diving deeper into his music! Highlights: -Inspiration Information -Island Letter -Sparkle City -Strawberry Letter 23 -Not Available -Ice Cold Daydream -Sweet Thang

Crazy album with soul, funk and jazz mixed into one with an epic outro. This album will grow on me. And how can I forget about Strawberry Letter 23.

inspiration inspiration

Phych soul r and b bangers

I love it! It's like Pink Floyd but with less drugs.

album is pretty good too. not much to say about it. its warm and it grooves. would probly be more fitting on a sunny day and not a cloudy afternoon-almost-night but hey whatre u gona do ? 9/10

Really enjoyed this!

This was great! I was familiar with “Strawberry Letter 23” but didn’t investigate further. I didn’t expect so many instrumental tracks. 70s groovyness and a new favourite.

Classic.

I love the 1001 Albums Generator website for albums like this: I’d honestly never heard of Shuggie Otis before, let alone knew of the existence of his third (and, for a long time, final) album, "Inspiration Information". Wikipedia describes the style as “progressive soul”, and indeed, it’s fantastic music that combines the groove and accessibility of soul with the complexity of progressive rock. I can well imagine why the album went largely unnoticed in 1974: it simply didn’t fit the stereotype of black music and was far too sophisticated for the pop-oriented R&B crowd. But it’s also immediately obvious why the multi-instrumentalist Otis had such an immense influence on the young Prince, who was to make a name for himself a few years later with a similar concept (and much more commercial tracks). The comparison with Stevie Wonder (who was working on the masterpiece "Songs in the Key of Life" at the time) isn’t too far-fetched either, but of course, he didn't have neither the resources nor the experience of Stevie Wonder. It would have been very interesting to see what else Otis might have produced after this album, but instead he largely withdrew from the stage (and the studio) as a solo artist and produced music only for his own collection. Some of this material was eventually released many decades later following its rediscovery. It was too late for a global career, but the album impressively demonstrates a singular talent that was lost in the grind of the record industry.

Pretty cool

really interesting and exploratory album.i remember some sampled sounds here and what makes it so interesting is how it doesn't care on maintaining a similar form on all of the songs, giving space to some songs without lyrics. And despite that, it has certain mood and cohesion. i can say, a nice background album. not an insult, a really nice album to chill

Probably one of the top-10 brand-new-to-me albums I've heard through this project. Everything well-written, well-placed, and I can't find anything to complain about besides not knowing of Shuggie Otis sooner.

Familiar yet novel, soulful without being sappy, jazzy and rocking, this is the aural equivalent of a cozy sweater on a lazy Sunday morning. You can hear the influence this had on Michael Kiwanuka, Lenny Kravitz, and Prince.

Love this album, it’s laid back, funky, meandering, unfocused, but slinky and cool. Great guitar playing too. Some of the tracks are aimless, but for whatever reason I’m happy to jam to them all the same.

This was a nice groovy, funky listen. A tad long, but enjoyable. 4/5

hmm i liked wld listen again

I wish I listened to this growing up so the nostalgia could make it hit twice as hard

Never heard of Shuggie Otis before. Thoroughly enjoyed this album.

like this a lot feels like thunder cat was inspired by this

3.6 Torn whether I should be marking this lower, as what tipped the balance were the final 4 tracks on Spotify, that appear to be not on the original album but instead a 'best of' from his first album? Wild. Anyway, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Super chill vibes, original album suffers from maybe too many instrumentals towards the end, feels like he kind of ran out of ideas of lyrics. Strawberry letter 23 is a banger though, can't believe someone else covered it almost note for note and made it a smash hit. I'd be livid if it wasn't for the royalties.

This is a solid album with a great mood. The music (especially the bass work) is outstanding and soulful. Pretty unique without going off the rails. Nice record.

Very funky. An unknown gem.

Funky, little psychedelic, fun listen!

Lush lush lush stuff from one of the best. What an epic album closer aswell. Sometimes this sort of music can get a bit lost on me in all honesty, but this kept me engaged. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: Freedom Flight

I wouldn't have said I was particularly into funk but this guy is a hell of a guitarist, the grooves are smooth and it's just effortlessly cool throughout. Can definitely see myself listening to this again, plenty.

funky. jazzy. bluesy. rocky. all great.

A low-key funk/jazz/R&B fusion album; sorta sounded like if Herbie Hancock was very sleepy. It was a mostly enjoyable listen, only one track that I didn’t like. At times the sound was quite inventive. The album as a whole was really smooth, easy listening, and groovy fun on a couple songs, too! I’ll give it a low 4/5, there was too much that I liked to keep it at a 3.

Really chill, kinda perfect as background music and a headache soother.

Liked it immediately. Can't believe I never heard it. Will be on my regular rotation.

Surprisingly really pleasant, I expected some dad rock stuff, but it had this nice blues-y feel to it.

7/10… psychedelic soul / p-funk / *1974

I went into this only knowing Strawberry Letter 23, but I love the rest of it. It's a really forward thinking sound - I can see why it was sampled by several more modern artists. Or do I have that backwards? Maybe I just likening because it has similar vibes to modern music I like. Either way, it's a great album to me. Not completely perfect, as some of the songs are a bit forgettable. The last 4 songs are some of my favourites, but they are bonus tracks. So maybe I should discount them from my rating.

Start of the album I liked a lot. Got weird later on.

Det va trivelig! Æ vet ikke ka æ hadde venta, men æ likte det.

This is cool. The sound morphs from Hendrix, Stevie and obviously/perhaps influenced people like Kiwanuka and Thunder at. A very confident album and great to hear a song I know so well from the Jackie Brown soundtrack but hasn't explored further. Further digging shows this guy is a sample treasure trove, if you know, you know, I guess. These are the days the list delivers.

Never heard of him before, starts strong. Funky dense cool, futuristic, modern. I like it. 4 Heard before? No Owned: No: 68/278 (24%) Will I get: Maybe

A more an unusual take on 60/70s soul, an enjoyable listen 4*

This is more soft jazz than anything else. Very enjoyable listen, even if it doesn't really stick with you. 3.5/5.0: Very Good

Surprising and interesting. A couple of duds stylistically but overall really good. Great guitar work.

8.5/10

Listening session: april 22nd, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: groovy, cool, relaxed and interesting. And the guy’s got a great artist name as well! This album is a nice gem to have discovered with this project Favourite tracks: Inspiration Information, Island Letter & Strawberry Letter 23

Slick as hell. I loved listening to this.

Shuggie Otis is smooth as fuck. Back half is all instrumental songs to vibe to but doesn't hit as much for me as the first half

Never heard of him and didn't know what to expect going into this album, but I really enjoyed it. I'll check out more of his stuff.

That's a funny one. It's a pretty good album interspersed with some more experimental tracks, making the album appeal to a more general crowd with easy listening stuff, as well as appealing to more experimental listeners. I think in this case it works in their favour, and makes the album less boring and more interesting.

I've been giving a lot of 4s recently but Strawberry Letter 23 lifted this from a 3.5

quite funky

A nice change from the monotonous collection of too many mediocre album on this list. I don't really think that it is important whether one likes this album or not, but at least it is something different and stands out. High quality musicians and more complex compositions give this a 4 for me even if I don't particularly like the songs. I would rather put on a good jazz album - but that is a matter of taste.

Almost put me to sleep in a good way

I won't call it aimless nor directionless. This is a superb album. The blending of jazz, r&b, funk and elements of psychadelia is truly a fascinating period of time with some of the best albums known to man. Purely organic instrumentation, analog recording techniques and a pure, free and creative environment created works like this from all accross the land. This album in particular is weaker than other because it embodies a more chill vibe. Not quite psychedelic, but almost intensive. Contemplative. Mediative. For that I love it. Do I wish it had a bit more substance. Maybe, but even then. If I were alive in '74 and I heard this along the same parallel as Pink Floyd. I'd be happy as a clam.

Jeg synes sgu det er ret fedt. 3,7

I love this album. Like the Tom Tom Club, it just sounds like this was the album he wanted to make and he didn't give a shit what sold or what other people's music sounded like.

Enjoyed!!! Will listen again

Funky, groovy, I’m conflicted about the 13 minute long song but I enjoyed this far more than I didn’t.

This album was the jam.

Album #53, Shuggie Otis, Inspiration Information ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Super unique summer album. I’d never heard of Shuggy Otis, but I spent the morning reading about him, and yeah, what a crazy “what could have been” story. He essentially stopped making music after this album, which was his third, but he also could have ended up being one of The Rolling Stones. Mad stuff. This is a really unique, strange album that seems really ahead of its time. It’s a mix of different genres, in particular R&B and soul, but blended with jazz, funk and psychedelia. The presence of the drum machine just makes it feel a lot more modern as well. What’s really interesting is how all these different melodic lines appear in the songs, and they just kind of drift off into different areas, most of the time really beautiful ones. It’s really well produced and just very, very interesting overall. If I had any criticisms, I’d say it can feel a little bit aimless at times, but that’s just the style. It’s not a particularly focused record, but I think that kind of suits it. My other reservation would be that he’s not a particularly strong lyricist, even though he’s a very good singer. The lyrics can be quite basic, but interestingly, as the album goes on, he sings less and less, so that sort of balances out. Even as an instrumental-heavy album, it really works because of the choices in instrumentation. So yeah, really interesting record. I’ll definitely listen to it again.

FUNKY!!

short n sweet. this studio sound is so simple and fantastic.

Goeie werk vibe

Overall: 7/10 This was funky and fun! I liked the instrumental tracks but the ones with his voice were really great. Fav Song: Inspiration Information

Groovy

Decent 4

Never heard of this artist. Pretty interesting, big album, hard to digest it all.

Snuggie’s got the grooves. A whole album completely in the pocket. Funky, fun, and smooth as all get out. Not necessarily a ton of “songwriting” but some great elevator funk for sure.

Best wel chille muziek, denk dat ik dit vást nog wel een keertje op kan zetten

Shut up and take my 4, afrobeat

A good listen overall. I enjoyed most of it, especially the smooth feel and the nice rhythms running throughout the album. It’s laid-back and easy to get into, even if I’m not sure how often I’d come back to it.

Really interesting listen - good tunes, good vibes. Long, but good

reminds me that kind of music that used to play in the restorant I loved to go with my family, jazzy, classy and memorizing

Inspiration Information feels like a record that exists slightly out of time, warm, hazy, and gently otherworldly. It drifts rather than drives, built on soft grooves, layered textures, and a kind of inward calm that makes it feel more like a headspace than a statement. There is an ease to it that never tips into laziness, the sound of someone deeply comfortable following their own instincts. What really stands out is how understated everything is. The funk is muted, the psychedelia is subtle, and the melodies feel half-suggested rather than declared. Songs unfold slowly, rewarding patience instead of demanding attention, and the production gives everything a woozy, almost sun-faded glow. It feels intimate and slightly fragile, like it could dissolve if you push it too hard, which only adds to its charm. It stops just short of perfection because that same gentleness can occasionally blur into sameness. The album stays in a very specific emotional and sonic lane, and while it is a lovely place to be, it does not always surprise. Still, Inspiration Information is deeply inviting, quietly inventive, and emotionally warm in a way that lingers.

Nice and mellow

Great album to vibe to.

VERY groovy, love the guitar :)

Kind of funk soul, I think. Enjoyable.

Review - great underrated soul/R&B album. Strawberry Letter 23 is an all time classic Rating - 8.5/10 Need to listen? YES

Another little gem of an album. Shit like this makes this whole experience worth the while. Favorite track: Aht Uh Mi Hed

This album is deliciously funky. I can tell he has influenced a lot of artists, like Thundercat. Its got hints of progressive, which I appreciate! Im gonna lookout for any Shuggie Otis vinyl records now.

Still love Inspiration Information. Some really nice instrumentals on this, with some interesting and unique (especially for the time) sounds/instruments. Quite beautiful and some genre cross-overs with folk/soul/experimental. Extra point for album cover and his swag

No. 102 A curiously funky and fun album. Easy to listen to.

reviews say it delivers less than it promises but it was rather humble honestly. makes good road trip music too.

Loved those vibes!

It's such a good vibe listening to this one. Loooove the grooves. I think it could've been a little moore, but it's still awesome for what it iis. Good 4.

This was a great listen

Mellow, funky and probably fairly forward looking for 1974. Some strongs are a lot stronger than others, but they are all good; and it's even more impressive that Otis played every instrument and recorded this in his shed. Best Tracks: Inspiration Information; Sparkle City; Aht Uh Mi Hed

Tosi chilliä kamaa, funkkia soulia jotain sensellaista. Toinen puoli levystä oli instrumentaalista mikä ei ollut ihan niin hyvää. Mutta voisin kuunnella tämmöistä kesällä vaikka lisääkin. Parhaat: Inspiration Information, Island Letter, Rainy Day

Never heard of Shuggie Otis before but really enjoyed this. First three tracks were especially good, did tail off a little towards the end. Cool album.

Strong start, but gets a bit muzaky.

This is why I'm still doing this list! Such a pleasant surprise! A really interesting mix of genres, the most prevalent being funk and a jazz I think. But man... This was right up my alley. A lot of the songs were, at least. I don't think it was as strong in the tail end. But other than that it just kept surprising me! Shout out to the bass player on the first track with that tone, man... More like this please

Smooth and funky, some great tunes here while still remaining focussed on the mood and groove - the sort of thing I'd imagine the Vulfpeck boys fall asleep to

Encore une fois un très bon album pour chill un dimanche matin

Just a great listen, makes me want to travel back to the 70s.

This is a lush listen

Pretty low-key for a funk album, but it does the job well. Also works as background music for receiving anal

loev aardbei brieven

Pleasant enough Re-rated after listening a second time, when I considered how ahead of its time a lot of the arrangements were. 4 - great even among this list

Funky stuff, right here. Solid 4 Stars.

Buenas instrumentales, groovy. Por momentos siento que se queda un poco corto.

Loved this, will definitely listen again

Don’t judge an album by its cover Really loved this one actually, I love that combination of funky jazz and some more electronic sounds I’m 100% sure I’ve heard some of these songs sampled/interpolated in more modern music, just a lot of cool stuff going on The last 4 songs are particularly great; I love how each one sounds so different and have their own identities

I like it. Absolutely unfamiliar with his work or his history or his lineage. Will I listen to more stuff from him? Yes. I liked the album, had good sounds and moved through a few genres that I like to move through myself. Two listens all the way through, and I'll take it a solid 4 stars.

Admittedly I was nervous for more jazz fusion after Headhunters, but I’m genuinely shocked by how much I like this album. This is an album that I didn't think much of just from the cover, but there is some funky, groovy, soulful, buttery goodness within this track list. All fantastically recorded and produced, the 13 tracks on this album have an incredible flow to them with just enough oomph to make each track shine. There's this great wavy sort of vibe to the album that gives it this really mellow and psychedelic tone. I really enjoy how the middle tracks of this album like Rainy Day and Pling offer an instrumental break from the rest of the sung tracks. The first 4 tracks of the album kick it off by showing off everything that is going to make this album shine for the next 30 minutes after. The last leg of the album wraps things up nicely, going from the great hit Strawberry Letter 23 to the mostly instrumental Sweet Thang, and then finally to the funky Ice Cold Daydream. The final track is a 13 minute that has this really hard to listen to bass in the mix on this song that just sounds really crackly and bad. It doesn't ruin the track as its only around for about a minute, but yeah that is probably the worst part of the album. Overall, I like a ton of tracks of this album and I think as a whole work, it offers a lot both in terms of hits as well as instrumental experimentation. It's a great vibe all the way down and there's a ton for music fans to chew on. A solid 8/10.

A lot of driving slow window rolled down late night vibes. funky beats mixed with beautiful singing

Inspiration Information really sounds ahead of its time.

Experimental funk with strong performances and grooves. I like the subdued nature of it, not demanding attention, but working magic in the background. I can definitely see myself listening to this again.

Gražus albumas, išsisaugojau visą.

Yah, this is a vibe. I like it a lot. Some of the sing-y bits are little 70's soul for me. Good, but in small doses. The music is solid throughout. I love some of these instrumental jams. I've saved this album and am putting some of the tunes on playlists. Listened to a few others by him and they're a little more guitar-oriented. Seems like a good guy to know. Going to give this a solid 4. Not life-changing or anything, but a great little collection.

Good Grove/Funk album. First time ever hearing this artist and I'd come back and listen to this record on like a rainy day, fire in the background, cold out, having a drink. 7/10

Great Songs: Island Letter, Aht Uh Mi Hed Good Songs: Inspiration/Information, Sparkle City, Happy House, Rainy Day, XI-30, Not Available, Strawberry Letter 23, Sweet Thang, Ice Cold Daydream, Freedom Flight Mid Songs: Pling! Bad Songs:

Wooow this is so chill and smooth! I'm very impressed. It's one of the most lush albums ever, the production just completely made me float. Think Stevie Wonder, but stripped back from the ambitious arrangments. Shuggie Otis finds power in minimalism instead. The psychedelic grooves just overtake your body completely. I need to relisten to it when I'm high, I can imagine it would be an even better experience.

Banger! 4/5

It had some pizzazz and I would listen to it again.

Well, this was a rare treat. Funky soul from 1974, with most instruments and vocals handled by Shuggie himself when he was just 23. Of particular note is the innovative use of early analogue drum machines which give a hypnotic quality to some of these tracks. Utterly charming and delightful to listen to.

This music will bless you with a smooth drive home down the 401

I'm near the end of this challenge. I knew most of the artists before, some only by name, but I never heard of Shuggie Otis. First impression: if Stevie Wonder made a yacht rock album. But it's better than that. The youtube music version has twice as many bonus tracks as original album tracks. That's too much. Favorite song: XL-30.

I enjoyed this, was more experimental then expected, listend mostly as background music and need a more focused listen

I liked this a lot. Very chill psychedelic guitar R&B.

Three Adirondack chairs? Two Spectator shoes? One rainbow gradient fill inside a confusingly mystic album title? This one checks all the boxes. What's inside is a dreamy whip of creamy strawberry baked in parchment paper and garnished with a rosebud of ganache. Bam! You're in a pot of jam. Fave trax: Pling! & Ice Cream Day Dream

4 out of 5. This was a fun, laid back album that could be great for parties.

Very groovy and chill. I pulled up the "Inspiration Information / Wings of Love" special edition on YouTube Music, which is more than twice as long as the original, and ended up listening to the whole thing. I don't always do that with "special editions" in this project; if I'm not into it, I'll stop listening once I've made it through the original album, skipping all the extras.

post bbq summer smoking in the backyard music

så ömt och fint! som en sommarkväll! detta värmde min själ

Good and groovy, solid beats and overall a great vibe on this one. I loved the vocals and some of the solos on here.

There is a charming simplicity to this album. The funk and soul performances are top notch but also fairly minimalist. Otis performs the majority himself and the absence of a full band can often be felt. Certainly not in a terrible way though. There's something refreshing about having extra room to breath and using simple compositions. Particularly as a lot of funk bands could be huge bands who were larger than life and getting parties started. Otis in contrast channels that kind of energy into something simpler and more intimate. It sounds like it's coming more from a bedroom than from a packed dance hall. But it doesn't come at the expense of quality. At times, the music feels like it's dipping into something like Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way" and at other times it almost feels like a percusor to 80s Detroit techno, that dared to combine James Brown with Kraftwerk and cheap synths. This album is so smooth, it could slip out of your brain. I'd definitely recommend repeat listens.

I'd never heard of Shuggie Otis before this. I was pleasantly surprised by the funk, soul, jazz, and experimental album that came out of the speakers. I saw the release on YouTube Music was 27 tracks, 2 hours long. I looked it up, and the original was only 9 tracks long. So, I limited my queue to the first nine in the album. I dug it so much that I went back to listen to the first nine over again and further into the YTM release stream. It's fun and chill. It grooves. I dig it and look forward to a chance to listen to it again when I'm looking to just catch that groove.

Now this is more like it, some real inventive stuff on here. First listen: 4 stars, need to add to my interesting list. I like.

pretty cool overall. funky with more jazz tied in here and there. i think the shorter jazzier instrumental songs were pretty easily my favorites

This was very fucking cool and much more inventive than I was anticipating. I couldn't believe what I was hearing on Happy House ! Fav song: Aht Uh Mi Hed maybe?

Shuggie Otis – *Inspiration Information* (1974) ------------------------------------------------ A bedroom symphony cut at age 21, every note played, sung and overdubbed by Otis himself on a 16-track Ampex. What began as a commercial flop quietly became one of the most whispered-about LPs in soul history, its DNA traceable in Prince, D’Angelo, Khruangbin, Anderson .Paak and half the “lo-fi beats to study to” generation. ------------------------------------------------ ### 1. Lyrics – miniature Polaroids of interior life - **Vocabulary**: simple, almost conversational; no civil-rights slogans or cosmic poetry. - **Subjects**: day-dreaming (“Aht Uh Mi Hed”), love letters that never get mailed (“Island Letter”), technicolour escapism (“Strawberry Letter 23”). - **Tone**: lovelorn but optimistic, the shy kid at the back of the class who still believes in magic. - **Technique**: heavy internal rhyme, lots of onomatopoeia (“plink-plank, pling!”) that mirrors the music’s liquid syncopation. - **Weak spots**: occasional Hallmark sweetness; if you need socio-political grit you will not find it here. ------------------------------------------------ ### 2. Music – psychedelic quiet-storm funk - **Rhythm bed**: early Rhythm King drum-machine patterns sit inside live conga & hi-hat, creating a loping “human-machine” groove that predates Sly’s *Riot* by two years. - **Harmony**: jazz-tinged 9th & 11th chords glide by in major-to-relative-minor pivots that feel like California dusk. - **Guitar**: Stratocaster through a Fender Twin, wah as a filter rather than an effect; solos are short, vocal, rarely showy. - **Keyboards**: Hammond, Fender Rhodes, primitive ARP 2600 squiggles that twinkle rather than solo. - **Arrangements**: multi-tracked Shuggies stacked like pillows – rhythm guitar left, high rhythm guitar right, bass dead-centre, horns (overdubbed on half the tracks) kept minimal so the mix breathes. ------------------------------------------------ ### 3. Production – DIY high fidelity - **Studio**: Columbia Studios, Hollywood – 16-track, Otis producing himself after CBS grew tired of waiting for “hits”. - **Signal path**: ribbon mics → tube pre-amps → tape; very little compression, giving the LP its soft “in-the-room” bloom. - **Stereo picture**: wide but coherent; bass and kick occupy the same narrow strip, everything else floats. - **“Mistakes” kept**: amp hum, a squeaky pedal, the occasional late cymbal – the record wears its humanity proudly. - **Mastering ‘74**: gentle, rolled-off top end; 2001 Luaka Bop re-master restores 2-3 dB of treble without harshness. ------------------------------------------------ ### 4. Themes – the inner world as universe - **Adolescence → adulthood**: the album’s arc moves from asking the cosmos for inspiration (“Inspiration Information”) to accepting that relationships are work (“Not Available”). - **Technology & soul**: drum machines don’t kill feel, they extend it – a quiet manifesto for every future bedroom producer. - **Colour synaesthesia**: strawberries, sparkle cities, island sunsets – Otis writes in hues, not paragraphs. - **Isolation as freedom**: every instrument played alone, yet the sound is communal; a prophecy of the one-man-band SoundCloud era. ------------------------------------------------ ### 5. Influence – the invisible textbook - **Prince** – *For You* (1978) borrows the one-man-orchestra concept and the pillow-soft vocal stacking. - **OutKast** – the aquatic funk of “Aht Uh Mi Hed” is a clear ancestor to *Aquemini*’s slower cuts. - **D’Angelo** – *Voodoo*’s spaced-out minimalism cribs the kick/hat pocket and the lazy, behind-the-beat bass. - **Neo-psychedelia** – Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Toro y Moi treat the LP as a manual for merging vintage soul with lo-fi electronics. - **Hip-hop crates** – “Strawberry Letter 23” has been flipped by Quasimoto, Large Professor and Kaytranada; the drum-machine intro of “XL-30” appears chopped in J Dilla out-takes. ------------------------------------------------ ### 6. Song-by-song snapshots 1. **Inspiration Information** – title mantra over a lazy 96 bpm; guitars pan like windshield-wipers. 2. **Island Letter** – Rhodes lullaby, bass walks in descending whole-notes, strings enter only in the final 30 seconds. 3. **Sparkle City** – the album’s most conventional funk; horn stabs, bar-room piano, night-driving lyrics. 4. **Aht Uh Mi Hed** – drum machine front-and-centre, Otis stacks 4 vocal harmonies that pre-date Prince’s *Camille* voice. 5. **Happy House** – odd-time waltz, childlike celesta hook, utopian lyric that could be a Sesame Street segment on shrooms. 6. **Rainy Day** – 12-bar blues slowed to a crawl; guitar solo is one continuous bent note for almost 8 bars. 7. **XL-30** – instrumental, proto-synth-boogie; ARP and Rhythm King dialogue like Kraftwerk on soul food. 8. **Pling!** – 90-second interlude; high-life guitar figures bounce off a detuned Rhodes. 9. **Not Available** – down-tempo heartbreak, bassline descends chromatically, ends cold. *(2001 re-issue adds earlier singles “Strawberry Letter 23” and “Freedom Flight” – both essential but from a different session, hence the sonic jump.)* ------------------------------------------------ ### 7. Pros & Cons at a glance | PROS | CONS | |------|------| | Ahead-of-its-time fusion of drum-machine & soul; still sounds futuristic | Lyrically lightweight – no narrative punches | | Cohesive “one-mind” sound despite multi-tracking | Two instrumental fragments (“XL-30”, “Pling!”) feel like sketches | | Guitar & bass playing that sings without grandstanding | Original 9-track LP is under 28 minutes – over too soon | | Warm, spacious analogue mix perfect for headphones | Sweetness can cloy if you prefer grittier socio-funk (e.g. *There’s A Riot*) | | Quietly revolutionary: blueprint for Prince, D’Angelo, lo-fi beat culture | 1974 audience expected full live drums – initial reception indifferent | ------------------------------------------------ ### Verdict *Inspiration Information* is a soft-focus snapshot of a 21-year-old dreaming in Technicolor. It is not the loudest or the angriest soul record of the ‘70s, but it may be the most quietly influential: the moment R&B realised that machines could cry, that solitude could sound communal, and that “bedroom” music could travel decades ahead of the mainstream. Put it on when the lights are low and let the colours bleed.

I had never heard this album or artists before, but I really enjoyed it. It was definitely a nice mix of jazz and soul, with a touch of funk at times. Perfect for a Saturday morning and a cup of coffee in hand. 4.25 / 5

11/6/25. Will need to give this a few more listens, but happy to come across this album! Really smooth and depth instrumentals, enjoyed listening to each instrument play off each other.

Красивая спокойная музыка. Буду слушать ещё. 6,5 из 10.

Genial første sang
