Longest. Album. Ever?

Empieza muy bien pero consistentemente perdió mi atención. Demasiado tranquilo o algo pero tendió a aburrirme. No es nada malo pero creo que no es mi gusto. Songs: Inspiration Information

Dos o tres veces sentí que el disco iba a empezar a despegar y ponerse bueno, pero nunca llego a todo. Interesante quizá, por el uso de la máquina análoga de percusiones, pero incluso tomando eso en cuenta la verdad no llega a llamar toda mi atención.

None of the songs particularly stood out, but I appreciate the musicianship and control over the album that the guy had from all angles. It was a pleasant discovery.

Wow - this is the era and style I love - but why don't I know Shuggie Otis - it's hardly a forgettable name. But then pop on Strawberry Letter 23 and it's 'ohhhhh'. Lovely, warm, cuddly.

It is a funk and soul album and was relatively short. It was alright but nothing memorable.

There’s a few gems and some tasty licks! A bit bloated and is unjustifiably lengthy. Highlights are the title track, Strawberry Letter 23, and Ice Cold Daydream. Sparkle City has some pretty great lyrics, the execution just didn’t do it for me though.

Really want to give it 4 stars. Love the laid back and soulful grooves and Shuggie’s whole vibe. However, this album felt a little hollow to me, not much stood out, not much went on, just nice, chill funk groovin’. Hope more of his albums are on this list cause he deserves at least one 4 or 5.

Really like this one.

Started off a bit slow-ish. Had a few good songs on it. I especially liked Strawberry Letter 23. The Freedom Flight song made me a bit dizzy for some reason. Giving it a 4* but I'm being quite generous.

Excellent. Finally an album I’ve not heard before that I really enjoyed listening to. Sounds like Shuggie could have been one of the greats but shied away from success after this release. Very impressive to write and perform that album at 21.

Am I old? Because this was awesome. Jazzy noodle-y 70s guitar vibes. Gentle. Ground zero for the 70s revivalists bands. And as soon as I heard Freedom Flight I knew it was sampled or covered somewhere.

I should love this, however, found it kinda underwhelming and forgettable. Maybe it's a summer album.

This is the first artist I hadn't heard of, and it is a fantastic album!* *Disclaimer: I'm white, so any RnB/Funk/Soul boggles my mind with its greatness!

Voice is sort of cute. Like Rainy Day best, methinks. But I still prefer having each track with lyrics for modern music. And off-pitch yelling of high notes is very much a no. 3 star at most.

Unexpected….chill while demanding attention.

 ⭐⭐ ⭐ ## General notes: Funky, soulful music. Wha guitars, staccato bass-lines, break-beats. Very chill relaxed voice and vibe. Lots of instrumental pieces and sections, lots of keyboards and drum machine too. A lot of times this album sounds like experiments and jams that doesn't seem to go anywhere. It has some great moments though. Both Pling! and Strawberry started boringly but managed to get interesting along the way. Other highlights include Sparkle City, Ice Cold Daydream and Happy House. ## Song by song - Inspiration Information: Good opener, very funky and lively but chill at the same time. - Island Letter: Laid back, relaxing vibes, tremolo guitar to the left, slow wha to the right, bass is almost reggae like, understated bolero percussion. - Sparkle City: Straight funk, starts instrumental. Cool song. - Aht Uh Mi Hed: The Bolero drum machine again, not a great song, not that bad either. - Happy House: Funky and jazzy. Really visionary in its structure, not your regular funk. Interesting find. - Rainy Day: Laid back again, blues guitar instrumental. - XL-30: The drum machine is back, now with all the samba. At least there's some real drums. The song evolution is jazzy and experimental. Another instrumental piece. - Pling!: The energetic onomatopoeic title will misguide you. This, again, is a slow laid back affair with electric pianos and drum machines. At a distance, like, across the street a sax is joining the jam. Good to fall asleep to, but not much else. Should have called this one Zzzz! - Not Available: Funk's back! Very guitar and bass oriented. Sadly, goes nowhere, one instrumental piece again. - Strawberry Letter 23: Some singing. This is supposed to be a hit song. I haven't ever listened to it before and I don't find it terribly interesting. Oh! Scratch that! There's a looping psychedelic guitar section at the end (complete with phased choruses) that's fresh and interesting! Sounds a little like Terry Riley. In all, that section elevated the whole song. That was cool. - Sweet Thang: Oh, the blues. All the right sounds are there. Westerny guitars, obstinate bass, a lonely hammond. A soulful voice. Goes nowhere though. - Ice Cold Daydream: What a start. Full of energy, wha guitars, frantic bass playing, turning into a really funky verse. Really nice descending bass-line. The hammond to the sides hammering like crazy. Wha guitar panned jam and electric solo are really interesting though short. - Freedom Flight: Hendrix meets Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" after a long night of partying. Miles Davis stop by and say hello too (though there's sadly no trumpet playing, but he's coming from recording "A Silent Way" and brought the whole band). You get the idea. A slow, airy jam constructed around a bass groove and an improvising guitar. Really nice.

Funky, easy listen. Good for cracking on with work

Pretty cool album. Not so sure about the instrumentals and the more R&B tracks, but the funk ones were excellent.

The version that I found on Spotify was the 2013 re-release, which included a bunch of extra tracks, but I will keep this vote limited to the origional first nine tracks ("Inspiration Information" through "Not Available"). Overall, I really liked the album, for what it was. It actually felt more like two sub-albums put together into one. The first four tracks are completely constructed compositions with vocals on top. The title track is the stand-out of them all, but I didn't think "Aht Uh Mi Hed" (read "That hurt me head" in a cockney lilt, I think) was far off. Then, starting with "Happy House", the album gives way to more experimental and funky tracks, which are entirely instrumental. Of that set, I particularly enjoyed "Happy House", "XL-30" and (to a lesser extent "Pling!". These tracks felt more like musical streams of conciousness, and I felt a connection of influence all the way to more current tracks by artist like Knxwledge. And then the (original) album wraps up with "Not Available", which I think is short for, "We had a song ready to record but the singer was Not Available". The song sounded ready to go, and it's just missing someone to sing along. That sort of sums up the album in general, I think, and the fact that there were two more releases with two sets of additional tracks added seems to support this. When it was released, despite 3 years of production, the album was still sitting as a work in progress. It has some gems, shows a lot of promising ideas, and who knows... maybe a couple more re-releases and it will feel complete.

Another really cool funk album I hadn't heard before this project. I love the folksier sound mixed in here and the use of drum machines.

I didn't want to like this, but it's catchy and smooth. This is good chill-out music.

Surprising. Not enthralled by the beginning but as the album deepened I was pulled in. Some almost Fourth World sounds on some of the instrumentals.

This is the softest not-totally-instrumental music I've heard that I would still call funky. I wish I got the more interludey bits: It tickles my brain that Otis opted for so much material of that kind while using his voice as a lead instrument elsewhere.

Very funky and smooth - I liked the title track and Strawberry Letter 23 a lot, and Rainy Day was a lovely chill instrumental.

The album comes off really strong. Really liked the first half. Second half… the instrumentals were good, but I wanted to hear them more in a complete song. Still, this was a pleasant surprise, I really liked this guy.

I was excited for this album but it underwhelmed. I had no idea who he was but read he was a hugely talented guitar player and could play multiple instruments. I can't really hear the guitar for all the other instruments. He also plays all the instruments (like I mentioned Grohl does for the Foo's first album) which is pretty cool. But the tempo is kinda dull, especially for the latter half of the album that is all instrumental (tracks 6-9). It sounds like a ho-hum lounge piece. The funk on the first 5 tracks is fine (and it comes back decently on track 9) but didn't blow me away. It feels like this album didn't age well. In the end, it wasn't awful just not what I expected.

Shuggie is a recent discovery for me. A music podcast that came out during the early days of the COVID pandemic was discussing albums of 1974 and Inspiration Information was one of the albums that was talked about. I immediately fell in love with it and also discovered that I knew the title track as well as Shuggie's famous Strawberry Letter 23. What I didn't know was that he played bass on Zappa's "Peaches en Regalia" and that he was only 16 when he did. In fact this album came out when he was only 21. Everything written by him. The album is a soulful and psychedelic musical journey that deserves to be better known than it is. This is an easy 5 stars!

The phrase "Casio concerto" kept coming to mind. Maybe the programmed drums were cutting edge in 1974, but this sounds like someone playing tunes on a Casio over some pre-programmed fake drum track. BORING. It's a shame because the album started strong - "Inspiration Information" is a smooth groovy song. I liked "Sparkle City," "Happy House" and "Rainy Day." Pretty sure the one constant across those tracks is real drums, confirming to me that the programmed drums just killed this album.

Incredible musician but these songs are pretty boring. Definitely some bright spots (Sweet Thang and Strawberry Letter 23) but overall not really worth listening to, except maybe as some inoffensive background music.

maybe i've just been having an off day. week. whatever. it just seems like i haven't come across anything that's really grabbed me lately. this album, apart from the closing track, is really no exception - i remember the time (roughly) when it came out, and i don't miss it. that last track, though...that was actually really awesome.

Album generally is a tease. Makes you think it's going somewhere and it's got something or it's developing something, but ultimately just waddles about like a lost penguin. The highlight of the album is the latter 1/3 of "Sparkle City", the rest is sleepy, boring, slop of someone too stoned to have put in the effort to be as good as they could be.

A bit of a gem! Eclectic funk and soul. Sounds a bit like Sly Stone, but less WAAHHHHHH, and more hhhMMMmmmmmMM! Some of the tracks are quite intricate, and the first track reminds me of Tame Impala. My latest summer groove.

synthy funk, some of it seemed a bit middle of the road now, but some I really loved.

A little soul, and R&B, with a nice '70s vibe. But there wasn't really anything about the song writing, or the singing that put this over the edge for me.

I actually really liked this. Good voice and cool instrumentation. Pretty funky.

чета залупа невыносимая, инструменталы ещё там куда ни шло, какой-то чилл, но вокалист когда выступает - аж крота бахнуть хочется. на трояк как-то тащат только песни про клубничное письмо и та, шо за ней идёт. но все равно это кал какой-то хиппарский

Чем больше фанка предлагает список, тем более ограниченным я себя чувствую. Ибо хейт целых жанров обычно считал маркером музыкальной некомпетентности. Поэтому пока остановлюсь для себя на том, что репрезентативные треки в жанре есть, но я их не слышал. Но с этим альбомом попроще. Почему-то в уши мне сразу бросился фанк, но первым жанром указан соул. А это уже нормальная тема по большей части. В итоге треки, от которых не веет фанком, воспринимаются весьма неплохо, хоть и не цепляют: Aht Uh Mi Hed, Rainy Day, Pling!, Not Available. А от которых веет, отвращают: Inspiration Information, Sparkle City, Happy House. А, вот почему бросился, заглавный трек ведь околофанковый. А ещё есть невнятное экспериментальное душилово под названием XL-30, не одобряем. И снова тот случай, когда хочется поставить ровно среднюю оценку, без перевеса вниз или вверх: 2,5. Ну да ладно, в этот раз натяну тройбан.

Really enjoyed listening to this. It wasn’t all worthy of 4* but it was a high 3* consistently.

Quite enjoyable but forgettable.

Pleasant, grooving low-key funk with some really high-class musicianship on display. It's not the most spectacular record I'll ever hear, but it creates an effective late-night ambience for the most part, bar the odd touch of seasick keyboard playing (I'm thinking here of 'XL-30'). Did anyone else think Otis' singing is not too dissimilar to that of Christopher Cross?

Let’s just start with the fact that this guy’s name is Shuggie Otis. That’s pretty much my whole review. Part funky, part mellow, all smooth. All Shuggie.

Great funk/psychedelic record. The drum machine give the music a slower more driving rhythm. The instrumentation is phenomenal down to the multiple guitar parts, bass, and horns. Shuggie Otis' voice is light and smooth, a perfect complement to his music

Ok I guess. Just couldn’t get into it.

So far the album reminds me of Hall and Oates. It's not terrible but not something I would not listen to often if at all.

I’ve never heard Shuggie Otis but I’ve definitely heard his influence. Chilled out sounds for a sunny day, funky bass lines and superb rhythm section that bring to mind both Bill Withers & The Band.

Upsettingly, spotify seems to have taken each song from another album. I'm willing to bet that the original albums records sound like they flow together, but this rendering from spotify doesn't. How can you mix cuts from remastered 2013 collections with original album versions of songs from '74? Of course its fucked. Well other than those issues of disjointed moments, I really enjoyed the album. Did I think it was profound? Hell no. Do I really the tracks? Most. I think a lot of the music is something you can really sink your teeth into instrument wise. I wish some of the vocals were clearer, but that might be the cutting again. I also wish the instrumentals were more evenly distributed. Real OG shit though. I'm also biased because I really like Shuggie. His voice is very pretty. I have to give this album a 2.5 though, because the mix is just atrocious. I mean you can get better uniformity of quality on some low budget debut albums. Also because the song ordering needs help.

Started well, but then became a bit too much elevator music for me. A couple of decent tracks towards the end but I don’t reckon I’ll ever think about this album again.

The first half of the album is good. "Inspiration Information" is a great single, but very little else in the album stood out to me. The second half of the album (the instrumentals) sort of faded into the background.

Really chilled and some nice instrumentation, but at times it is so chilled it's actually a bit boring. Although it was cool to discover the the "Ms Jackson" connection. 5.5/10

Nice surprise to find this

Imagine you step into an empty elevator. Doors close. You notice the song “Aht Uh Mi He’d” playing through the tinny speaker, and you think ‘not bad for elevator music...’. and then the elevator gets stuck and your stuck with the rest of the album. Not much going up here. It’s floor 2.5 - going down.

Funny, I've never even heard of this. Really enjoying it. Jamiroquai totally ripped this off! Production is so crisp and bright. It doesn't sound like something that is 46 years old.

Buenas vibras. No soy muy fan del blues, no porque me desagrade sino porque no me engancha lo suficiente, soy milenial y necesito chingos de gratificación instantánea diaria, como cuando escucho pop, por ejemplo; pero bueno... ese no era el punto. El disco me pareció muy reconfortante por lo bien producido que suena (o al menos esa es la idea que me formé porque me suena como que uh la la, todo está muy bien "pensado" y bien ajustado antes de sacarlo a la luz), siento que tiene una melancolía ligera y una introspección tranquila. Canciones favoritas: aht uh mi hed por el ritmito, Rainy Day por la guitarra melancólica y Strawberry Letter 23 me hace sentir muy bien además de su letra wholesome, jaja. Oh this the vibe. Shuggie has got me chillin out maxin, relaxin all cool. He was always a name I'd been familiar with but someone I'd never listened to. Huge fan of the synth loop, drum machine groove stuff on here. Perfect music to just chill to, possibly to relax and study to, know what I'm saying. Fantastic groove through out. This dude really knows how to find the pocket.

I thought I might like this more than I did. Some of the songs were just kinda background despite being pretty good R&B in other places. 7

underrated gem. I don't know anyone who even knows who Shuggie is. The file clerk at Flagstar used to hook me up with albums all the time. This was one of his best recommendations.

Ahora sí que un álbum muy chill. Ni siquiera sé qué género es, pero hay un balance acertado entre lo instrumental y las vocales. Acertado porque varía, se complementan, al principio parece que las canciones van perdiendo la voz, pero después regresa y bueno, finalmente desaparecen en esa última canción larguita de pura instrumentación. Fue muy bonito escucharlo, desconocía a Shuggie Otis por completo y creo que "Inspiration Information" es un rolón. "Aht Uh Mi Head", "XL-30" y "Strawberry Letter 23" me gustaron especialmente por esas percusioncitas y la vibra más chill que siempre. Un álbum del cual me quedo con canciones, pero quizá no revisitaría entero. 8.5/10

Got a kick out of this one - a groovy album navigating various genres and standing out as an early predecessor to more modern R&B styles. Put it on good speakers and vibe out!

Oh yeah, this is lovely! Super chilled out soul, with a splash of psychedelia and folk. "Strawberry Letter 23" is an absolute tune, but it's not present on most versions of the album, so I'll go with "Island Letter" or "Pling!" as my top track - love those relaxing latin rhythms underpinning them!

Definitely got better towards the end, but it felt a little slow at the start. I forgot it was on at some points. The last few songs were solid though.

Forgettable. Wouldn't make my top 1000, though it did lead me to "Strawberry Letter 23" from his previous album, which is good.

Wow. This album is so tasty. Every groove is in the pocket, every note sung is perfect, the mixing and production are smooth as hell and yet retain enough energy to stay super interesting. There some really dated, Casio-level synth drums on here that would usually lose an album a star but this was 1974, so this was cutting-edge stuff at the time. No penalty. Full marks.
