This is just glorious, can't believe its just 42 minutes long. what an amazing record. Stone Cold Classic.
not a very good zeppelin album. its got a couple of biggies on it but the rest of the album doesn't make use of the ridiculous talents of jones, bonham and page. i used to listen to zeppelin in awe of the ability of the guitar bass and drums, these days when i listen to them i struggle to get past plants wailing.
My friend Twelve Pint Simon loves this record. He used to travel to Belgium every weekend and play it LOUD so all Belgians could hear and kiss him on his mouth. I said "Nobody likes phlegmish kisses" and he said "did you just say phlegmish or flemish?" Then I pointed out that they are homonyns and I was making a pun. Simon laughed, went outside and ate crisps in the carpark.
The best Led Zeppelin album. I can't really do Robert Plant, but this one is alright. Not sure what the "baby" count is on this one, but he's still an enormous nonce. Loves babies. Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, Baby, baby, baby, baby, Baby, baby, baby, baby, Baby, baby, baby, baby, Baby, baby, baby, baby,. Nonce.

Oof this is good too. An easy four, could well have been a five without the flight into Tolkein-y fantasy in the Battle of Evermore. Starts and ends with brilliant songs, and of course you've got Stairway to Heaven in the middle. Lovely stuff.

The fiviest of five stars. Theory: though Robert Plant was necessary, as every hard rock band had to have a wailer, this is all about the other three. Case in point: Bonham's drumming on When The Levee Breaks. Case two: Stairway to Heaven is the best example of can hardly hear it/quiet/soft/nice/loud/very loud dynamics ever recorded. Who cares about the lady who knows? Not me Clive.

Nää on aloittanut uransa julkaisemalla kuusi loistavaa levyä kuudessa vuodessa ja oon aina kelannut, kuinka huikeita levyjä olisikaan, jos ois vain kolme levyä samassa ajassa. Nyt muistaakseni jokaisella levyllä noin puolet on viiden tähden biisejä ja puolet kolmen. Tällä ne huippuhetket on selvästi raidat 1, 2, 4 ja 8. Saas nähdä, mitkä noista kuudesta levystä ei tällä listalla ole. Ja myös sen, oisko joku sittenkin ihan viiden tähden osuma. Onhan se kiva, että hyvää musaa on paljon, mutta tähtimäärissä tulee takkiin, kun julkaisee niin rennosti :P

While I'm not as attached to this album as some others seem to be, I cannot deny that this album is excellent, or at the very least has excellent songs. Some of it is a little steretypical rock for my taste, but stuff like Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog are famous for a reason. No, the big surprise for me was the quieter song Going To California. I've never heard anyone talk about this song before, and it's probably my favorite. It's just so nice and calming, while still definitively having that Led Zeppelin flair. Almost reminds me of what I've heard from Zeppelin III coming into one perfect song. Album was great as a whole, though, not perfect, but deserves it's recognition.

A bona fide goddamn rock 'n' roll masterpiece! It's way nerdier than you'd think, but it's fucking glorious. Imagine buying this album in 1971? You get it home, you put it on thinking "sweet, new Zep" and then they relentlessly assault you with so much motherfucking badassery for 42 minutes and 35 seconds you don't even think your brain can process one more shit hot guitar lick? What a time to be alive. Wish that's how I heard it for the first time.

If you've turned on classic rock radio ever, you know at least three-fourths of this album. It's an album that's permeated the cultural knowledge so thoroughly, I don't think anyone could ever provide an objective review. I'm not huge into Zeppelin, but even I know these songs kick major ass. My spicy take, however, is that "Battle of Evermore" keeps this one from being perfect, at least in my book. Favorite tracks: "Stairway to Heaven", "When The Levee Breaks", "Four Sticks"

I have never been a big Led Zeppelin fan but IV is definitely their most accessible compared to I-III and Physical Graffiti. Everyone knows Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog is a rock staple, but both are still fantastic songs. Rock n Roll and When the Levee Breaks were solid tunes too. Surprisingly I wasn't a fan of the acoustic songs on here, which is weird because some of my favourites on the other Led Zeppelin albums I've listened to were acoustic songs. Going to California or Battle of Evermore doesn't hit like Tangerine, Black Country Woman or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Also didn't care for Misty Mountain Hop or Four Sticks. In short, one half I really liked and would rate 5, the other half is more meh. So 4 for average and their fourth untitled album.

Have to admit, I had a set of completely different (and not very flattering) notes on this record written in a disgruntled drunken state. I guess I wasn’t really in the mood for more Zeppelin. But that’s why listening to these albums more than once is so important. This record is a masterpiece. Everything I enjoyed about Zeppelin III is here and more - Sandy Denny’s angelic voice, some of the best drum production ever recorded. This is a classic LP in every respect. Believe the hype.

The best one so far, Stairway to Heaven is a banger. Definitely not a 5 though, just not for me, I can’t see myself listening to this album on repeat.

There's no way this album doesn't get 5 stars. It really displays peak led zeppelin with banger riffs and solid songs everywhere. Black dog and rock and roll are classic rock songs that don't sound too special today but were really pioneered by Zeppelin and others of the time. The battle of evermore is such a curious and interesting song, nice instruments and very melodic ambiance. There's nothing to say about stairway to heaven, it's the embodiment of progressive rock and great solo. Misty mountain hop is just a banger in a weird way. Four sticks is sometimes a bit on the repetitive side but still shows some very creative instrumentality. Going to California has a huge place in my heart, how not to feel melancholic and to look back in life while listening to it? Then it ends with when the levee breaks, also a banger with such an interesting ambiance and instrumentation. 10/10, 6/6, 20/20, 7/5
Album de fou malade, litterally every song is a banger, and the greatest Stairway to Heaven as well. The guitars, voices, drums, everything is on point and fit perfectly.
The album is very very good!!! Each song has its very own incredible harmony and enjoyable on its own!!! I could not even pick a favorite song on a first listening.... I was still left with something missing at the middle and end of the album so I will say big 4.5/5

The only album where I have every song on my favorites. This is my 5th LZ review, I'd just be repeating myself over and over. Four talented musicians banding together, doing what they do best. It's hard to find a better guitarist, or a better bassist, or a better drummer, or such a dynamic and expressive vocalist as Robert Plant. Confident in their sound, they're able to masterfully combine all sorts of genres, and in the first 3 tracks alone we get metal, blues, folk, and garage. 4 completely distinct genres meshed with rock yet coherent and full of distinct personality you could only identify such sounds with these guys. Every song feels complete yet never overstaying its welcome, whether it's 3.5 minutes or 8. Can't even list my favorites cause it would be insulting to the ones I leave out.
Banging!
Have I heard Stairway to Heaven enough for one lifetime? Yes. Is it still a mind-blowingly epic song? Also yes. Going beyond Stairway though, this is an incredible album, and it's not even my favorite Led Zeppelin album. I love how it starts out with a couple of basic (but still great) rock songs and then suddenly The Battle of Evermore comes on and you're like, what's this? Then you've got Stairway, which must have totally blown everyone's minds when first hearing it back in the day, and back to some basic (but still great) rock with Misty Mountain Hop. Four Sticks is maybe the low point of the album but still an interesting song. Going to California is just sublime and then closing with some classic blues done Zeppelin style with some amazing drumming by Bonzo. The whole package is just outstanding. 5 stars.
This was a very good album, I only knew the song Stairway to Heaven. I always liked it, so I’m glad I got to listen to more of his songs.

Love this album, was one of the first I listened to end to end
Black Dog is a song with a lot of history for me. The roots of so much rock that was to follow is here in this album. Rock and Roll is like the proto sound of southern rock and alternative at the same time. Battle Of Evermore is the perfect lead into Stairway. Stairway is pinnacle of Zepplin and that is so strange to think about. Misty Mountain Hop is arguably the worst Zepplin song the band ever made. When The Levee Breaks is the sound of hip hop.
I liked the ZZ Top album better
Not a fan of Zeppelin, never have been. I really wanted to turn this off.
Listened to them so much growing up… probably the most played band on classic rock station growing up, 106.5 WSFL, with daily “Get the Led Out” time. Side B is probably a 4.5, but Side A is an 11. Seriously, Is this the best A side of an Album ever? Love an album that comes flying out of the gate… with probably by favorite Led Zeppelin song. But then still has some softer moments, without losing momentum.. It just plays like an album where people Knew exactly what they wanted to do and did that exact thing.
I never need to hear "Black Dog" or "Rock and Roll" ever again (Stairway to Heaven never gets old for me). Despite that, it's undeniable Led Zepplin was at the top of their game with IV. I think I recall reading they were the biggest band in the world when it was released. My parents owned this record and it was the first Led Zeppelin album I ever listened to. I went on to discover efforts I liked better, but IV remains a incredible album.
Who dat?... kidding. Can't begin to express how massive of a Led Zep fan I was in high school. This isn't my fav album of theirs though. Hit me up if yo want to discuss!

Used to be my favorite Zep album, but it's light had dimmed somewhat with time. The songs are still great (Four Sticks!!!!!!!!), but the record as a whole doesn't have the cohesiveness as earlier efforts. Bonham still fuckin' pounds, man.

I mean, yeah, this album was so overplayed by 1991 it was the butt of probably the best joke in Wayne's World. But it's fuckin' Led Zepplin IV. What are you gonna do? If you heard this album for the first time today, you'd still be like "okay, that's a different level." Unless you'd already been a fan of Greta Van Fleet, maybe.
Led Zep were a band who could amaze, confound and frustrate in equal measure. They were plaigiarists, not once but many times over, as the internet age has shown. LZIV stands proud of all this as their most fully realised collection of songs. We get the gamut - the Tolkien stuff, tight-trousered priapism, blues, proto-metal and folk. It sounds great, John Bonham is less plays the drums than attempts to knock seven shades out of them, and Robert Plant sounds so slinky and committed that you forget he's singing utter nonsense half the time. This is the big one, fellas.
Not a whole lot for me to say here except this: somehow, impossibly so, this album gets the balance of acoustic and electric rock 100% perfectly right. That's harder than it seems and if you don't believe me, then have I got a Foo Fighters album for you! (It's "In Your Honor." Disc 2. The one that's entirely acoustic/softer rock. Try it if you dare.) I think it's because Zep can do more than one style of acoustic rock, so that when they slow things down on this album it still feels moody and heavy enough that it just *feels* like hard rock even when it ain't rockin' hard. 8 songs, 43 minutes, and all of them are good. Just hard to find fault in that equation.

Stairway to heaven hits you in the feels
4th album I own and second huge album in a row? I know it and you know it: IV is an unimpeachable, amazing 5 star album. I get really tired of “Black Dog” and “Rock and Roll” because they get ridiculously overplayed on the radio (these songs do nothing for me anymore), but songs like “Going to California”, “Misty Mountain Hop” and even “Stairway” get better with age. I don’t think this is Zep’s best, but that’s a story for another day.
This was the first LZ album I listened to, as a 15 year old working in a water park. All the stoner guys I worked with insisted I give it a spin and it ended up being something I returned to over and over. Lots of breadth, skill, and fun on this one. Essential listening for any classic and hard rock fan.

LED ZEPPELING – IV 4/5 Probably a great album, but not of my style. With some more time the songs could have grown on me a little bit more. The punctuation comes from the importance of the album in the band context, and because it has one of my favourites songs (and possibly one of the best songs of all time, in my opinion), Stairway to Heaven. The voice of Robert Plant is one of the things I dislike the most about Led Zeppelin, and the reason I don't like songs like Four Sticks more. Black Dog --> 4/5 Great guitar riff, and a very good guitar solo Rock and Roll --> 4/5 very catchy, very good rhythm The Battle of Evermore --> 2/5 Voice harmonies are very dissonant sometimes, and don't sound good in my opinion. Stairway to Heaven --> 5/5 Masterpiece. One of my favourites songs in all time, and a great example of how to work with a relatively long song and a simple intensity change Misty Mountain Top --> 1.5/5 Not a fan of the rhythm or the guitars, and the voice of Plant at its worst in the album Four Sticks --> 2.5/5 Cool drums and feeling, but that's all Going to California --> 4/5 Beautiful and simple folky ballad, with a more contained and better voice performance from Plant When the Levee Breaks --> 3/5 Very good musically and instrumentally, nothing out of the ordinary in my opinion

This band is so ridiculous and over the top, and Black Dog is maybe the most ridiculous opening track I have ever heard on a album. 20 seconds in and I don't know how anyone has a reaction other than "what am I getting myself in to here." The ballads and "When the Levee Breaks" is what makes this album, the second side of the record is very solid. Although "Stairway" is a classic, I probably never need to hear it again. Too many people have tried to argue to me that Led Zeppelin is under rated, but I think they might be the most appropriately rated band ever. I struggle giving this 4 stars, 3 seems right.
Iconic. There's not much to say and it's been overplayed so maybe doesn't have an impact on playing. Nevertheless it's very assured, musically proficient and well produced so can't be knocked on that front. Maybe if you don't like 70's rock?
I don't claim any cred when it comes to Led Zeppelin. I probably avoided them deliberately all my life as a reaction to rock snobs. (I think being a music fan should be more about joy and fun than a taste contest.) In doing so, however, I've missed out on some real enjoyment. So, in my naïveté, I quickly realized that this is my favorite of the Led Zeppelin albums I've listened to. And to compound my sins, my appreciation for "Stairway to Heaven" has only grown and I would happily declare it my favorite Led Zeppelin song of all. What can I say, I've not worn it out over the decades, and it brings me joy. But I also grew an appreciation for the rest of this album, honestly enjoying every track, Side 1 and Side 2. It's all great to me. (Truth be told, I am especially fond of the folky tracks, "The Battle of Evermore" (with Sandy Denny!) and "Going to California.") This album was my real "I get it" moment. Maybe I'm still a novice, but I get it now, as long as I can just like what I like.

This is musical greatness from start to finish. Especially the finish --- Going to California and When the Levee Breaks are a one-two punch to my guts I love them so much. This album is a gift.
This is the one Led Zeppelin album I had access to in my childhood, so I am familiar with this album from the mid-seventies. Back then most of this album wasn’t really in a pre-teen’s wheelhouse, but “Rock and Roll” got regular play on my plastic kids record player. In the early 2000s, I revisited this album as an adult and that’s when it clicked. There’s a reason why this album is so esteemed and I got it. I really loved the variety on this album… and fell in love with most of the songs that had not connected with me as a kid. Listening to it today I marvel at the quality and variety of songs on the album. I still got that special place in my heart for “Rock and Roll.” Only now the rest of the album has found room there as well.
A decent if somewhat overlong in parts rock LP. At its best when it keeps things simple and tight like bravado-filled opener 'Black Dog,' but tends to stumble later on with dragging one-note ideas or overstuffed tracks (yes, this includes Stairway).

The truth is, you probably don’t ever need to hear this album again. You’ve probably already heard more than half of it on the radio/commercials/films/tv shows, or you’ve heard it in full hanging out at your weed guy’s apartment, or from an older relative who thinks it’s the pinnacle of mankind’s achievements in recorded music. But, if you find yourself enthralled by the prospect finding out the answers to the questions posed earlier, by all means, revisit this record. It’s actually pretty good.

People will continue to debate what the best Led Zeppelin album is. I put my money on this album, though I do understand the case for most of their others as well. "Black Dog" is a beautiful way to open an album and it became an all time classic. "Rock and Roll" is a good track, though not my favorite. "The Battle of Evermore" I feel is an underrated track on this album, understandable why with the rest of the songs on here that it just doesn't quite hold up to. And then of course we have one of the top 5 greatest songs of all time on anybody's list. "Stairway to Heaven" is a masterpiece of a song. It alone could put this album at a 4 in the midst of bad songs, though obviously that is not the case. The only qualm I have is that it got so popular that it became the forbidden riff in guitar stores. "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Four Sticks" are the two weakest tracks on the album and I don't have much to say about them. But "Going to California" is my favorite Led Zeppelin song and I could listen to it on repeat for days and not get tired. It is amazing how it balances sad and hopeful in such a beautiful and effortless way. "When the Levee Breaks" is tonally different than the rest of the album, but is such a powerful song. It is also a masterclass in recording a cover song. This is an amazing album! It is an all time classic and one of the greatest albums of all time. I knew from the second it came up on my homepage that it was going to end up being a 5 star album!

I’m sure there are people out there who think Led Zeppelin is overrated or mediocre but those people are wrong. Not one song is bad and comprehensively it’s brilliant. John Bonham’s drums are iconic as always.

Dosta godina sam ja njih onako olako shvaćo, nisu mi se sviđali uopće, al uopće. Ove godine mi je nekak to sve došlo na mjesto i mog reć da je ovaj album dost dobar, a i oni. Lako moguće da su mi postali dobri jer mi otac uvijek njih spominje, njih i Dip Parpl kak bi on to reko. Naravno, imam ovu ploču, baš šta je on bio kupio prije 30tak godina maltene. Inače nemamo neku kemiju što se tiče dost toga, ali oko glazbe možemo pričati.

-"Black Dog" kicks in with the famous vocal intro and a killer riff -"Rock and Roll" is a ripping rock classic -"The Battle Of Evermore" is a little slow in my opinion -I know "Stairway to Heaven" is like the most perfect rock song of all time, but I just don't get it. The build just doesn't pay off for me. The buildup is like 4 minutes for it to just be a jam that I would say is weaker than "Black Dog" or "Rock and Roll." It's not terrible or anything, but just too slow of a build and not enough payoff for it to be praised to the level it is, in my opinion -"Misty Mountain Hop" is fun, and the vocal rhythms are catchy and interesting -"Four Sticks" and "When the Levee Breaks" were strong -Overall great rock album, both only 2 or 3 tracks kinda slacking in my opinion. Some of the most classic classic rock songs are "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll"
This is the definition of a 5 star album. One incredible song after another. I gave it short shrift because of how overplayed Stairway is .... and was during the 70s. But there is no denying the song's greatness. The other real classic is; in the same epic sense When The Levee Breaks. Just a fantastic with so many wonderful, musical twists and turns to let it sound fresh and new and interesting with every listen.

There are times I have listened to this and thought it was the perfect album. LZ were problematic for a lot of their stealing and sampling, but the talent is incredible.
Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Stairway to Heaven, Going to California, and When the Levee Breaks, all on a single album - does anything else need to be said? There are three other tracks on here - two of them are odes to Lord of the Rings in classic Zeppelin fashion ('The Battle of Evermore' and 'Misty Mountain Hop') and are well worth a listen. 'Four Sticks' is the other, and while it does feel a bit out of place in relation to the legendary rock classics elsewhere on this album, it's by no means a BAD song. So yeah, this album is incredible. It has stood the test of time for very good reason - it's f'in brilliant. It holds a very important place in the annals of rock history. Easy 5 stars.

My assumed position is Led Zep 3 is the best but the first 3 tracks here, you know, you've got to question it. Absolutely love the Battle for Evermore. And I mean I like the lord of the rings and everything but if anything that takes away rather than adds from it, I just love it as a thing. Never particularly understood the obsession Stairway to Heaven gets. Also don't recognise it in anything Wayne plays in the guitar shop. But hey it's a good song. Misty is loads of fun. Going to California, oh my heart. Yeah, at When the Levee Breaks and it's confirmed. Stairway is the only song on this album I don't absolutely love.

A classic of course - can't really review it neutrally as I have the vinyl and have listened to it repeatedly, though not for a while. Not sure my 52 year old self likes it quite as much as my 17 year old self did, but it is still pretty good.

Great album! I liked this better than Physical Graffiti and I already knew the more famous songs. “The Battle of Evermore” was a highlight for me. I don’t think I’d listen to it again but I did enjoy it today.

An easy 5. Such a great album with every track a winner. Stairway to Heaven isn't even the standout track with The Battle for Everymore and Misty Mountain Hop at the top of my list.
I get that this is a classic album or whatever but I'm not a big fan of this kind of rock. It will always just sound incredibly dated to me. Usually anything by Led Zeppelin will always sound a bit uneventful for me.
I seem to be mostly alone with this opinion, but here goes: I find Led Zeppelin overrated. That said, this is still a really good album. I like it much better than the other two LZ albums we've had. And Stairway To Heaven and When The Levee Breaks are great songs. But I really can't see this as a masterpiece and tracks 5-7 were pretty weak.
This is considered the quintessential Led Zeppelin album. Not only does it contain one of the best known songs of the 70's, but it's also their most consistent record. It's been a while since I listened to IV in it's entirety and I almost forgot how many classic songs are on here. This should be the starting place to discover Zep, then work your way back (I, II, III) to the beginning, they're all essential!

Malheureusement, le lien qui mène à cet album ne doit pas être très sécurisé puisque eltrapeze et moi-même avons été infectés au lendemain de l'écoute par le virus LedZep-4. Une semaine cloué au lit dont je me serais bien passé...
Hormis me clouer au lit pendant 4 douloureux jours à cause de douleurs à l'estomac, le virus LedZep4 s'est montré très peu efficace et n'a su atteindre mon appareil auditif. Un 4 sur 5 en guise de politesse, mais cet album était clairement le moins bon de nos amis de Led Zep.

Oh man, where to begin. Spinning this album from my dad's collection was other-worldly. Opened my eyes to the bluesy rock of Led Zeppelin. I must have listened to this warped and scratched LP about 50 times in my youth. It was a different sound that I had never heard before. For a few years of my life in the late 90s, there was no other band better, but at the same time, more mysterious, than Led Zeppelin. This is easily my favorite album of theirs. When The Levee Breaks is one of my all-time favorite songs and possibly one of the best outro/Side B songs of any album ever. Stairway to Heaven is probably the greatest rock and roll song ever etched onto vinyl. Every song on this album brings back such amazing memories of discovering all of the great classic rock of the generation before me.

This is perhaps the greatest hard rock album of all time. It shows Led Zeppelin at their most accessible and their best in terms of songwriting and arrangement. Many of these songs are still radio mainstays and their influence on the genre cannot be overstated.
Absolutely legendary
The big, celebrated LP, but I can't decide if it is better than Led Zeppelin II. Certainly such familiarity with all eight songs pushes IV up in the ratings. It is accomplished in the styles it sets out to cover. Equally good, I think.
Awesome album
Good googly moogly this is an awesome one. All the tracks except for Four Sticks were fantastic on first listen and I'm hoping that one still grows on me (although I had heard most of them before anyways, I guess). Loved the mix of sounds and themes on this. On top of that, the singing is incredible and the instrument work is top notch as well. 9/10

One of my favourite albums of all time. When Stairway started I stopped working and let the music flow through my brain.
So there it is. The first one. I doubt that my journey could have begun any better than this. An all time great album by a band that I like, but never had the time to sit and listen to the whole album from start to finish? What more could you ask for! It truly is a great listening experience, (although I think it might have been even better if I hadn't known like half the songs already) but there are a few tracks like Four Sticks that didn't do much for me. In fact, before the last song, I had it in the three star zone! But When The Levee Breaks made it sure that it is definetely a strong four. One album down, 1000 to go...
p241. 1971. 3 stars. Got to be honest, I have never cared for Robert Plant's voice, it strays too close to a hysteric shriek. He sounds like Roger Daltrey with added oestrogen. This is a schizophrenic album - a competent rock band with some good tunes that can't decide whether to play blues, be rock'n'rollers or folkies. And it suffers from the usual early 70's wankage which means a lot of the songs outstay their welcome. Didn't do it for me. Jimmy Page seems like a quite good guitarist though.

Black Dog is a hype opener, and Stairway to Heaven is one of the greatest songs of all time. I've never sat down and listened to a Zeppelin album all the way through, and was introduced to many new songs that I liked, but I did feel that many of these songs dragged on.
Obviously a classic. The songs that I had not heard (I thought I had heard the album but then realized I had heard a "Best of Zeppelin" thing that included like four songs off this album) were not particularly impressive but Stairway really is an amazing musical achievement. I also liked the LoTR song.

Huh, that's weird. I didn't know this band had a fourth album.... Just kidding. My son discovered this album a few months ago and has been playing it nonstop. He has great taste. Someone asked me a while ago what is Zeppelin's best album, and it obviously has to be this one. Yes, it's overplayed. But there's a reason for that. It's because the songs themselves hold up so well. There are very few albums that radio stations will play any track from, I think I can count them on one hand: Who's Next, Dark Side Of The Moon and this one. Even "Stairway" as many billions of times I have heard it is still a great song. It just doesn't get old. I vacillate as to what is my favorite song, and right now it's "When The Levee Breaks." Ask me next week and it will be something else. Just a great, great album.
Too easy. A cover to cover beauty. It must have been both satisfying and frustrating for Led Zeppelin to release this album after getting panned for III to say "ya happy now?" I'm not sure Four Sticks gets enough credit for being every bit as good and rocking as Black Dog or Rock and Roll. When the Levee Breaks is also just as good a sweeping epic as Stairway to Heaven. I was explaining to my kids yesterday how Whole Lotta Love is actually a reinterpretation of an old blues song and that LZ has done that a few times to great effect. When the Levee Breaks was their best of that. This album just has so much in your face rock yet also has some incredible softer or acoustic pieces. Again, too easy.
A perfect album. Black Dog and Rock and Roll start it off rocking with everyone in top form. Plant has a great duet with Sandy Denny on the Battle of Evermore, but it's probably my least favorite song on the album. Not that it's bad - as I said, it's a perfect album. Stairway to Heaven is a perfect song, start to finish. Any time I hear it, I have to listen all the way through. The opening riff (which sounds nothing like Spirit's Taurus), the verses as the song builds and builds, that guitar solo - one of the greatest ever - and the powerful ending. Yes, it's overplayed, but for good reason. Misty Mountain Hop - another great rocker, with awesome harmonies. Four Sticks has a great unusual riff and time signature, with amazing drumming. RIP Bonzo. Going to California calms things down...great guitar and mandolin parts and fantastic vocals from Robert Plant (like all of the album). Finally, When the Levee Breaks: possibly the greatest opening drum line of any song ever, followed by a massively cool riff and bass line, harmonica, slide guitar, and moaning wails. Bottom line - this is one of the greatest bands of all time at their peak. Can I score it higher than 5?
Like swallowing a deep zen pill, takes you to a very good place. Love the integration of harmonica and mandolin to complement the other sounds. Bonham my favourite drummer.
Almost totally non-experimental, with the narrow exception of some parts of Four Sticks. Still an immaculate straight rock album: Inescapable, cohesive, with many corners which have been partially duplicated since. Even Battle, the low point of the tracklist, manages to make moving upper notes on a guitar sound moving, plaintive, not done-a-million times. The followup fails the latter criterion through no fault of its own.
What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? It is a legendary album that absolutely deserves that status.

14th March 2022 Listened throughout the day while working from home, went to see the godfather in East Dulwich with Jen and Adam. Was really struck by the drumming when listening this time around. But what can you say? It’s Led Zeppelin IV.
Some great songs, some ok songs
I quite like this album, but I think it's a bit overrated. Yes, it has some great songs, but there's also some filler here (and Four Sticks, which... just no).
This album is a fuckin' masterpiece. IMO stairway is the best song ever written (that I've heard) and totally deserves all the praise it gets. Black dog is surprisingly hard to play on guitar. Really jazzy feel but it's a rock song. Rock n Roll is such a simple tune but Plant's singing just sends it into the stratosphere. Even the more, uh, "adventurous" tunes are still interesting and hypnotic. The Battle of Evermore is basically a vocal solo. Interesting drumming, Jimmy fuckin' Page's leads... there's more or less nothing I can criticise about this album. It even goes for the perfect ~40min. And they were in their early 20s when they wrote it. It defies belief. 6/5 if I could.

Led Zeppelin IV [conventional title] by Led Zeppelin (1971) In 1982, eleven years after this album’s release, a 17-year-old ‘big man on campus’ named Benny walked into his private-school math class singing: “Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove”. His stern, no-nonsense Intermediate Algebra teacher (me) turned from writing the day’s assignment on the blackboard to shoot Benny a disapproving glare. Benny sheepishly clammed up. But as I turned back to the blackboard to finish, I sang softly: “Ah, ah, child, way you shake that thing Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting” As I put down the chalk and turned again toward the class, smile met smile as Benny and I shared a trans-generational moment of awareness of the power of Led Zeppelin IV. Benny ended the semester with a surprisingly good ‘A-‘ in math. It would have been a ‘B+’, but his anachronistic love for Led Zeppelin tilted the scales in a positive direction, and I don’t regret it one bit. There was a time when I considered Led Zeppelin IV to be the greatest album ever, and I’m not sure that that time is past. Young people today should do themselves a favor and develop such a strong a familiarity with this record that they will be able to recognize each track from its opening strains, like Beethoven’s Symphony #5 or Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. It’s that good. Few albums have ever had both the variety and cohesiveness of Led Zeppelin IV. Each listen is an immersive experience, striding through an aural gallery of head-banging rock, moan-inducing blues, culture-resonating folk, and a time-transcending mysticism that carries perennial fascination. And tying all these disparate features together is a musical synthesis of sounds of today (the ‘now’) and images of the misty past (the ‘then’—see below). As musicians, each of the six performers (including Sandy Denny, ethereal backing vocal on “The Battle of Evermore” and Ian Stewart, piano on “Rock and Roll”) executes at peak virtuosity. The four members of Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page [guitar], Robert Plant [lead vocals], John Bonham [drums], and John Paul Jones [bass & keyboards]) are each individually on lists of the ‘greatest of all time’ in their respective categories of performance. Yet no rock group (other than The Beatles) ever played better together. From the electro-windup intro on the opening track “Black Dog”, the listener knows he/she is in for a thrill and a treat, in that order. Robert Plant’s inimitably powerful yet soulful a cappella lead vocal storms onto the scene, grabbing the ears. Then, struggling to discern the meter, the listener immediately discovers the groove, even though it seems that John Bonham’s ingenious rhythmic composition is performing a different song altogether, ignoring the standard gum-chewing backbeat of early rock. But everything is in miraculous sync, as Page and Jones muscle on, all pausing to let Plant do his thing before kicking back in with pure power rock. We teenagers listening to this in 1971 had never heard anything like this before, because there never was anything like this before. Then, without letting up, we hear the smashing rock & roll of “Rock & Roll”, where Bonham reminds us that the backbeat still lives, and Page cooks like never before with wild guitar solo work. Page later said the track was written and recorded in fifteen minutes. I would have paid serious money to sit in a room with Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry to watch them hear this track for the first time. And by the way, the most convincing cover of this song was done by Heart (the closing track of Greatest Hits/Live [1980]). And just when we think the album is going to mash out hard rock from beginning to end, we are jolted into a little fantasy medievalism with the next two tracks, “The Battle of Evermore” (check out the Tolkien, Lord of the Rings references) and “Stairway to Heaven”, where Page’s first-time (!) experience with mandolin and iconic solo electric guitar passages wrap around Plant’s mystical lyrics (Plant was only 22 years old at the time). “Stairway to Heaven” is in the rock ballad canon because of its dramatically drawn out development and increased intensity over a steady chord structure. It’s one of the greatest songs ever, not because of profound lyrics, but because of its incomparable instrumentation and vocal performance. Yes, it has been overplayed and over analyzed, but it still moves. The amazing guitar solo (at 5:55) and the wailing lead vocal on the closing bridge (at 6:45) still bring shivers after a thousand listens. Side two begins with “Misty Mountain Hop” providing an explanation of the contrast on side one between the ‘now’ of the first two tracks and the ‘then’ of tracks three and four. After a tale of a druggie’s awkward encounter with a cop in the mundane ‘now’, the artist concludes with a flight to ‘then’: “So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains Where the spirits go now Over the hills where the spirits fly, ooh” And the listener, clutching a copy of Tolkien, The Hobbit, is glad to go along for the ride. The ‘now/then’ duality is beautifully pictured in the cover art, where the front side shows the weathered ruins of an interior wall adorned with an old painting of a seemingly even older man, contrasting with a modern but dull and overcast cityscape where buildings battle with trees on the back side. And between concern for “when the river runs dry” (in “Four Sticks”, featuring Bonham’s superlative drumming with four drumsticks in 5/8 alternating with 6/8) to the droning blues dread of what will happen “When the Levee Breaks” we hear of a search for the perfect woman as the acoustic guitar (Page) and mandolin (Jones) accompany the softly melodic tune “Going to California”: “To find a queen without a king They say she plays guitar and cries and sings... La la la la Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born.” When in fact she has been born, and her name is Joni Mitchell, and Robert Plant knows it. But he can dream, and so can we. I will listen to this album till the day I die. 5/5

Look this is one of those albums that a lot of people, especially certain types of people, call ‘the greatest of all time’. And they’re not necessarily wrong. When they say "they don't make them like they used to", this is what they have in mind. In my humble opinion, Led Zeppelin IV is the second best album of all time. Apart of containing groundbreaking music (which, later, provided some "rejects" to Physical Graffiti) , with songs like Stairway to Heaven, there are plenty of spectacular individual performances here: John Paul Jones on mandolin in Going to California, John Bonham's solo at the start of Rock and Roll, and (of course) his so creatively recorded performance in When the Levee Breaks. Created by four individuals at the top of their craft, this is a masterpiece from start to finish.
Everyone needs to listen to the entire zeppelin collection

This truly is one of the best albums ever released. 8 tracks, 6 huge hits. It's kinda unbelievable, even for Led Zeppelin.

Not quite as coherent as III, but it makes up for it in the heavenly heights the songs hit.
I'm supposed to love this but I just don't
Best Song: Stairway to Heaven. For a song so famous, it still delivers. Maybe because it isn't as overplayed on the radio as other similar mega-songs. Worst Song: Four Sticks. Not bad, just boring. Overall: Hard to listen naively given how ubiquitous this album is, but even under that weight it feels monumental.
This is another one that needs half star ratings. I'm gonna give it 5 stars because it's chock full of iconic memorable melodies and arrangements. But some of the vocals are so screechy it makes my ears bleed.

Compelling range, and several great songs - Black Dog, Stairway to Heaven, Going to California, When the Levee Breaks. They avoid the trap that they seem to fall into on other albums, of just rocking out in a way that sounds cool but doesn't go very deep. Their best album?
Even though I'm not the biggest Led Zeppelin fan, I have to admit this is an iconic album that deserves respect. And it's another great example which supports my theory that bands often produce their best work when they go off into the country and record in the comfort of relative isolation; encouraging jamming and exploration. Produced really well with some interesting sonic touches throughout, but nothing so overbearing that it's distracting from the songs themselves. I don't know if you'll ever hear a more badass drum sound than on "When the Levee Breaks." This album is a near perfect balance of their influences, from blues, to folk, to Tolkein. Yeah, you know they were fucking nerds.
Probably my favorite album of theirs, has quite a bit of range and they are quite far along with their style that this is a great vertical slice of Zeppelin. Unfortunately it's almost become too ubiquitous that I have a hard time separating it from a lot of people that taints the impression. However, it's not my favorite style of rock and I don't always wanna listen to Zeppelin in general. I actually prefer the slower songs like The Battle of Evermore and Stairway to Heaven (as much as it was overplayed). I quite enjoyed Four Sticks with the addition of synths and the percussion is a lot of fun. Culturally and of the genre a 5 but in terms of listening pleasure it's a 4.

I feel weird writing about this one. One of the most important albums to my awkward tween and early teen self, and still one of my favorites. I don't care how often I hear it, Stairway still moves me.

The fourth rock album from Led Zeppelin was a critical and commercial success, as well as the band's best selling album. The album is certified 24x platinum which makes it diamond certified too. The band's most popular song "Stairway to Heaven" also comes from this album. This album is regarded as a cornerstone of the 1970's hard rock music, because it had a great diversity of songs and was so popular. I thoroughly liked this album and will listen to more Led Zeppelin songs I haven't heard yet.
I'm back and forth a lot over which Led Zeppelin album I think is their best. But honestly, I think, song for song, IV really delivers everything that Zeppelin is about as a band. If you listen to classic rock at all, you probably know most if not all of these songs. They are stone cold classics, all of them. I cannot stress enough how rare that is in an album. Yeah, a few have been overplayed somewhat in the past 50(!) years. But this is an album that holds up ridiculously well to repeat listening. From the mega energy “Rock and Roll,” to the grandiose, epic “Stairway to Heaven,” to the delicate acoustic “Going to California,” to the slow burning blues of “When the Levee Breaks,” every flavor of Zeppelin is present here. “Black Dog,” my word. That is possibly the best intro to any album that I have heard. It's perfection. Influential iconic rock album
Neh, dit is niet mijn ding. Vooral de stem irriteert mij, maar ook de muziek vind ik niet echt heel relaxt of ruig overkomen. Het is het allemaal net niet. Klinkt eerder als een schoolbandje. Favorieten zijn "Stairway to Heaven" en "Going to Califironia". **
