Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Fantastic album...likely the best of the Stones. Maybe not as many hits, but just so solid end to end. Has my favorite Stones song of all time...Tumblin Dice!! 5/5

Really fun. Even though it was very long, I still enjoyed it all

Historisk.

Some of the Stones' best stuff on here. *Almost* justifies the double album but a few early-on bluesy tracks that go nowhere could have been left off. However, Rocks Off, Sweet Virginia, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Torn and Frayed, Shine A Light etc. are easily worth the 5* rating. Hugely influential (looking at you, mid-90's Charlatans and Primal Scream) and lots of fun.

Arguably the stones best record, at least the most versatile

I own this on CD. Like the variety of styles, it's good!

Haven’t finished the album yet, but so far I’m enjoying it very much! Hopefully can edit this after I’ve listened to the whole thing

Oh, I needed this one today. This is truly one of the greats. This is the album I probably would present to anyone who asked me what the big deal is about the Rolling Stones. I go back and forth whether Exile is the Stones' greatest album, or if Let It Bleed is. Let It Bleed has the advantage in that it's a shorter and tighter album with more standout tracks. Exile is more of a vibe, but what a vibe it is. And the album doesn't suffer from the self-indulgence that tends to plague double albums. This is the Stones in top fighting form, lean and mean as they ever were. The songs are earthy, laid back, bluesy and engaging. The energetic boogie of songs like "Rocks Off" and "Rip This Joint" draws you in, but it's easygoing, soulful fare like "Tumbling Dice" and "Sweet Virginia" that give this album its depth. The quality from individual song to song can be a little uneven, but on this whole this is a masterpiece. Fave songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Tumbling Dice, Shine a Light, Rip This Joint, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, Let It Loose, Happy, Loving Cup, Rocks Off, Shake Your Hips, Turd on the Run, Ventilator Blues, Stop Breaking Down, Casino Boogie, All Down the Line, Soul Survivor, Sweet Black Angel, I Just Want to See His Face

Holy hell is this amazing. I thought Sticky Fingers was THE Stones album, but...I think it's this one now. The band's recklessness and powerful sound is on full display. Some of Mick's best vocals are on here, and Happy is a stunner for Richards. This album merges all the Stones' influences into one perfect album, blues, rock, horns! This is a fun one!

This might be one of the first times that I'm really "Listening" to Exile, which I know sounds crazy when you know the rest of the stuff I love (which includes most Rolling Stones material from about The Last Time through literally right up to this album, and listening to Exile in Guyville a hundred times or so, since I bought that and OK Computer at the same Capital Records bargin sticker special display at the Woodfield Mall Sam Goody...in 2003 or so and I might have already have bought Hail to The Thief), or at least really sat down with it. I've obviously cherry picked the hits from it before. I think those are all still the highlights, but the runs on the full b-sides of each LP are so in line with the stuff I love that I picked up some new favorites like Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed, and a new appreciation for All Down The Line (where I hadn't picked up the Be My Baby vocal riff towards the end beofre) that all have that cosmic country vibe that I keep trying to lock in on the definition of (which usually does come back to "trying to sound like the bands Gram Parsons played with or the groups he wanted to be." The whole thing flows so good. I don't think I appreciated that until listening to it on this Vinyl Fetish app I found the other day that gives you a visual (and side based) vinyl experience. I've never really cared that much about vinyl and I'm not going to start buying real records for myself probably ever, but it is a fun little way to listen to high res streaming classics the way they were originally. Side 3, other than a real outlier in Happy, is just the heaviest feeling Stones stuff (or maybe junk), there is a weight to the sound that they're dragging around. It's a party that should have already ended, but the remaining members still think they're having a good time. Even the gospel songs that start still sound haunted. Stop Breaking Down is a little too white boy blues band for me, but the rest is so good, that it is easy to forgive, especially with the two resilient concluding songs. Giving this a good listen tonight makes me want to do a track by track comparison with Exile in Guyville.

Some albums require more than five stars. Yes, the muddy mix is not for everyone, but this is great music by a great band at the end of a magnificent run.

My favorite RS album. It covers the full range of their music -- raunchy, rockin', rough, rude, bluesy and soulful. A few great covers tossed in with Mick/Keith classics. Maybe a filler or two, but who cares. The rest of it is so good it makes up for it. An essential album to own! Easy 5.

Probably my 3rd or 4th favorite Stones album but a 5 nonetheless. A love letter to their influences, Exile gives us great blues, country, spill, and old fashioned rock and roll songs but it’s still the Stones and these guys are not messing around. My personal favorites are Shine A Light, Tumbling Dice, All down the Line and Sweet Virginia.

Extremely consistent rock record filled with typical Stones' blues-country-ish infusion. I will admit I am a fan of this sound and this album gives you over one hour of it and Mick's vocals don't even get annoying despite this length. Throughout listening to this came a few moments where I thought "yes, this is all very good, but right now it just starts to melt together and lacks some variety and a proper distinct hit" and then the strong distinct hit came along as the very next song. I just keep wondering if I should even get to the point of wonder, even when satisfaction came in the end each time. Wonder if this wound function better as shorted album. 4 stars seems low because it is a masterpiece, 5 stars seems a bit high because it is not flawless. But 5 it is.

THE Rolling Stones album!

This might be in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Absolute fucking heat from start to finish.

Muddy. Dig it.

Pretty great road trip jams from front to back.

I Are Bort is not going to enjoy this.

It’s the stones

Loved it.

This album is much, MUCH better than Let it Bleed. Like, leagues better; there are simply no skips. And it's not that Let it Bleed is BAD--but rather, this was just simply so much better. LIB was a collection of one S-tier song and the rest were Bs and Cs; this was S-tiers and A-tiers only IMO. It's all aged beautifully: The vocals work, the instruments sound as layered and sophisticated as they did when this album first came out (I assume; it predates me). I'd be remiss to pick any fave track other than "Tumbling Dice," especially considering the cool history. Keith Richards got the idea for the track when he rolled out of bed one morning feeling uninspired and then tuned up his guitar. And out "tumbled"--heh, heh--the full melody of this song. Even for those of us who don't have Keith Richards's musical mind, it's easy to recognize a stellar track when you hear one. And this is IT.

Rolando as preda

Truly one of the greatest albums of all time. So soulful and bluesy. Songs like Sweet Virginia, Loving Cup, Let It Loose, Shine a Light are just incredible. There's enough variation in pacing and sound that this album just does not get old. Incredible and an automatic 5.

Always loved this album...gritty new orleans feel...Torn and Frayed + Loving Cup are absolutely solid

Easy 5/5, no question. Favorite tracks might be Happy and All Down the Line

Now this is a classic album. Heroin/coked up tax exiles record a double album of swampy rock and blues with a splash of country in an old chateau. What's not to love? Best Tracks: Rocks Off; Tumbling Dice; Sweet Virginia

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Stones at their finest... the best expression of rock and roll ever conceived

5.0 + unmatched for its loose swagger. This recording sounds like a rollicking weekend bender and I wish I could jump in and join.

It's the stones. they are as old as I am....always loved the stones

It's probably too long, but it's got everything you could want from a Stones album. Maybe my favorite of theirs. Best track: Tumbling Dice

Pre marking this. Like the songs so far, need to get this more embedded

Obvious banger no? Rolling stones BEEN having it

One of the greatest Rolling Stones albums and one of the greatest albums of all time; a perfect showcase of the brilliance behind the Stones' blues and country influenced songwriting. 10/10 Best Tracks: "Rocks Off" "Casino Boogie" "Tumbling Dice" "Sweet Virginia" "Torn and Frayed" "Sweet Black Angel" "Loving Cup" "Happy" "Ventilator Blues" "Let It Loose" "All Down the Line" "Shine a Light" "Soul Survivor"

One of the best double albums of all time (along with London Calling)?

Such a good blues rock album. Love an upbeat first track. So many good good songs in the record. The guitar work is so subtle but really adds so much to each song.

un grande entre los grandes

Stones when they are past their pop phase, getting some great rock & roll, country, and blues grooves. Absolute classic!

Stones are always a hit

Perfect alvum

This was really good. I feel like I hear a lot of this album in Jack White's work. Great Harpo Slim cover.

So much fun

Perfect album. Nothing to complain about at all.

Definitely one of their good album

I enjoyed it, I saved a couple songs to add to my own personal playlist for 2021. 😄

One of my favorites Stones LPs

This album was almost a new one for me! It’s woven genres is really cool. I’ll give this an RS 4.9

Love this album so much. Tons of variety and the playing is on point. This is about as good as rock n roll gets

One of the best Rolling Stones album, so many great songs and flows very very nicely.

Rolling Stones do the Beatles

Honey tonkin blues and classic rock & roll. Its got a lot of good songs that I was unfamiliar with but not a lot that stood out to me in particular, I do like Soul Survivor as a closer. Jagger bringing his specific style and variations on the exact genre they are shooting for throughout and all the instruments are competent despite how disjointed the recording was with members missing or on drugs. If I want to jam on some old school rock this would be on the short list.

#377 Until recent years, I was more of a greatest hits fan of The Rolling Stones but having heard a few of their albums, it’s clear there is a lot of quality to be found. I don’t know this album well but I have listened before and contains some great songs. It might not be my favourite of those I have listened to so far, and its run time probably doesn’t help in that regard. Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Listen before you die? ✅ Fave track(s): Tumbling Dice; Happy Rating: 8/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lots of great blues-influenced Stones here and many tunes I hadn’t heard before. Not every song was mu cuppa tea, but overall great album.

Tinha este álbum em CD na colecção e ja ha muito tempo que nao ouvia um CD do inicio ao fim. Gosto bastante deste álbum. Melhor para mim Shine a light

Groovy and fun, just don't pay too much attention to the lyrics

Another reminder of how much the Stones owe their sound to American country, blues, and gospel music. They do it well, and this is a really good album. But let’s not forget the true pioneers such as Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, and all the other greats from the delta. .

Very good but some songs blend together but still a good time 8/10. First listen.

In the great Beatles vs Rolling Stones debate I think I have come to my conclusion. The Beatles have higher highs with their most famous songs, but The Rolling Stones have a better more consistent sound throughout their albums. I think I am a Stones over Beatles fan after this list.

I expected this not to totally live up the the hype but it does. I’m not sure I can handle a full album (any album) without getting tired of Mick Jagger being Mick Jagger, but otherwise this was a great blues rock record. I’m sure it’s directly influenced almost all of the music I really like.

Tolles Album, das sich auch gut nebenbei hören lässt. Ein richtiger Klassiker, der zum Mitwippen einlädt.

Very good.

Compare the Rolling Stones to Sonic the Hedgehog. In the 90s, Sonic was the epitome of cool. He was spikey, was super rad, had 'tude (of the atti variety). Thing is, that specific brand of cool wore off. By 2005, nobody wanted to be Sonic except a weird, underground-dwelling subset if the internet. The Rolling Stones brand of cool is still just as cool today. They're the kind of cool that is sort of cringe (as the non-sonic loving kids say) to dissect. They will never not be cool, because although they are indeed trying very hard, they do not appear to be trying hard. Sonic is a total try-hard. Beneath that spiked exterior lies a soul rife with insecurity. Not so the Stones. What you see is what you get. And what you see is dang cool. Anyway this record does go a little long, being a double album and all, and is a bit samey in parts. But it's good samey so you can't complain too much.

It's The Rolling Stone's rock and blues opus. It's amazing. Tumbling Dice might be the best song by the stones. But you also have Loving Cup, Ventilator Blues, Happy, Sweet Virginia. Closing pair of Shine a Light and Soul Survivor. This is the album I would play if you didn't know who The Rolling Stones were.

I never understood why the The Rolling Stones were so popular. After listening to this, I still don't understand. Perhaps some things just aren't meant to be understood.

I think this is maybe a little on the long side for what it is, but none of the songs are bad.

I had to listen to this one like 3-4 times to decide whether or not I just sort of liked it or quite liked it. Think I'm leaning towards quite liking it as I didnt really get tired of it throughout that many listens, finding it was actually growing on me with each time listening through. Thinking this is the strongest Stones album we've received yet on here! 7.5/10

All the stones albums on this list are good, solid albums. 4 stars

In many ways classic bluesy rock with elements of country here and there, and an excellent amount of horns throughout that give the album a more lived-in, grooving feel. Compared to the more stiff blues covers and rip-offs of the 60s, this album feels a lot more timeless.

I kept thinking, "Wait, this is the Rolling Stones??" I had no idea they were so rockabilly.

This was great. I went back and listened to it twice.

Ehh, was not in the mood.

Nice, cool music, not my stile but it’s cool. Fav: all down the line

7/10 - Not my bag but I recognise how good this album is. Never thought I would enjoy the rolling stones but there was a fair few songs on there that I liked.

Rocks off - 4 Rip this joint - 3 Shake your hips - 3 Casino boogie - 3 Tumbling dice - 4 Sweet virginia - 4 Torn and frayed - 4 Sweet black angel - 3 Loving cup - 3 Happy - 3 Turd on the run - 3 Ventilator blues - 4 I just want to see his face - 3 Let it loose - 4 All down the line - 3 Stop breaking down - 4 Shine a light - 4 Soul survivor - 3

I feel obliged to give this classic a rating of 4, although I'm no Stones fan.

Liked it, would listen to again.

4.5 It's long but doesn't seem as long as it, surprisingly few hits but some really great songs

The Stones get some really full instrumentation and make a fun album that keeps itself exciting. It sounds pretty good

Finally, after nearly two years, I get my second Stones record on my album journey! Here I thought I was gonna finish the Beatles before that happened. Anyway... Exile on Main St. gets a lot of notoriety in the Rolling Stones' catalog. Not only was this the band's first double album, but the recording process was particularly messy. They had spent the money that they owed in taxes to the British government, prompting them to leave their home country to avoid seizure of their assets. Keith Richards rented out a villa in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, where the band set up a makeshift recording studio in the basement, working all night and all day. As if that weren't enough, heroin was abundant during their stay, which proved to be disruptive, especially for Keith, as it became a drug habit for him. Tensions arose between band members who indulged in drugs and those who abstained from them. After some time, the basic tracks were brought over to Sunset Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, where overdubs were added, and Mick Jagger took charge at this stage. After all the turmoil, it's amazing that this record turned out as good as it did. Across two discs, the Stones run through a smattering of rock and roll, Delta blues, soul, gospel, and country - the most American-sounding that these Brits have been. Side one alone showcases this variety, firing on all cylinders with the hard-hitting ode to that heroin on "Rocks Off", the rockabilly swagger of "Rip This Joint", the earnest cover of Slim Harpo's "Shake Your Hips", the country-rooted slowburn of "Casino Boogie", and the tribute to gambling on the grooving "Tumbling Dice", complete with a call-and-response outro. Mick Jagger commands the mic with his Southern-esque drawl amidst the assorted backup vocalists. The instrumentation of this record is anchored by the well-influenced guitar interplay between Keith Richards and Mick Taylor, and the purposeful brass arrangements from Bobby Keys and Jim Price. I was certainly into this musical palette across other tracks like the barroom country swing of "Sweet Virginia", the piano-driven soulful bliss of "Loving Cup", Keith Richards's twisted jaunty number "Happy", the harmonica-infused fast-paced blues of "Turd on the Run", the swampy gospel of "I Just Want to See His Face", the rocking opener of side four "All Down the Line", and the anthemic penultimate organ-driven chant of "Shine a Light". But somewhere along the way, I realized that this album could have been trimmed down a bit. I have the sneaking suspicion that by the time they got done with recording, the band and producer Jimmy Miller were burnt out and ended up throwing as many tracks together without thinking about the structure of this record. That does leave me feeling there could have been some cuts and rearranging of tracks, especially in comparison to the more succinct Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. I look back on tracks like the twangy country rock of "Torn and Frayed", the lowly slide guitar stomp of "Ventilator Blues", the fervent gospel singing of "Let It Loose", and the decent cover of Robert Johnson's "Stop Breaking Down", and while I didn't hate them, I feel that they add to this repetitive nature as the album kept going. At the very least, "Shine a Light" should have closed out the album instead of another by-the-numbers rocker in "Soul Survivor". Also, for as much as "Sweet Black Angel" was well intentioned in advocating for racial equality after being inspired by civil rights activist Angela Davis, the execution leaves a lot to be desired as the band opted for this backward-looking country-blues track with a West Indian rhythm, as Mick Jagger laid it thick with this Caribbean-esque accent, and he also dropped the n-word on a line. As such, the song winds up being an unfortunate byproduct of its time, and unlike "Brown Sugar" off the preceding album, it couldn't hide that fact behind an infectious hook. All in all, Exile on Main St. is an enjoyable yet flawed record that represented the Rolling Stones' strengths alongside their lows. Truly an album that would have come out of being drawn away from home and into the throes of excess and exhaustion.

really enjoying the stones music ive listened to so far on here, definitely will return to it

I Just Want to See His Face

I was never a huge Stones fan growing up, ya they had a few good hits (Satisfaction), but the weren’t The Beatles. Time passes, tastes refine, I still love The Beatles, but what the Stones have achieved over their long career is absolutely astounding. They have continuously evolved, and I have come to realize what huge volumes of original music they have written recorded. A great example is Exile on Main Street, so many songs that have become Stones standards. I can’t think of another band that has fused Rock and Blues better! The rhythm section is nothing short of incredible, and when it comes to longevity who can beat the glamour twins for song writing and performance?

very country drive w dad album

This was the right vibe driving through the streets of Boston.

This is what a Rock ‘n’ Roll band sounds like - a bit of blues, a bit of soul, a bit of gospel, a bit of country. The recording sessions were legendary and it’s all a bit of a mess, but glorious.

Good story to this album. No major hits on this album, but I think it's the Stones being creatively the Stones!

This is a good Stones album, but like most of the Stones' work, the hits are the things that matter. No different here. I could easily give this a 3 out of 5, but I am giving it a 4. The hits, whenever the Stones deliver them, are always great. The 4 is for Tumbling Dice.

No. 205 I enjoyed this as much as I enjoy most blues rock, although I don't think it sounds like peak Rolling Stones and is very Americanized

fue completamente lo que esperaba la verdad, al principio fue bueno aunque siento que se volvio repetitivo muy rapido.

Best Stones record on the list yet. There are some heaters here. With that said, I don't think there is a single Stones record we've heard that would crack the Beatles top 5. Maybe even the top 10.

Ensin mietin, että eikai taas ja alkuun tuntukin vähän turhan junnaamiselta, mutta kylhän tää tästä aukes ja ol rajuu menoo.

Rock and roll, country blues, hard rock.

Against lot of common held opinions but this isn’t my favourite Stones album, it takes the looseness a little too far on occasion. I really like it and listen to it often but never loved it. 4 Star

Overall Rating - 3.64/5 (7.28/10). Very much the Stones playing what feels like Country/Southern Rock. It's a choice, and the musicianship and skill of Mick and the lads definitely pull it off.

Great bluesy dad rock to wash your car or garden to. Some great songs and then lots of nice same-sounding songs.

mama je bila u pravu stonesi>beatlesa

The Rolling Stones, when I was growing up, was the music for older brothers and cool parents. It wasn't until early 90s when I really listened to anything they did. Of course, I heard a single hear and there - Paint It Black was the theme to Tour of Duty and that was cool. Sympathy for the Devil and Mother's Little Helper played occasionally while we were swapping seats for a C64 game at a friend's house. But I hadn't listened to them really. It was somewhere around 93 when I was living with a bunch of guys and had discovered Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville and wanted to see how the whole thing was a response. One of my roommates had quite a few of the remastered CDs of the Stones. He took me on a tour of the early stuff; stuff that had departed from what they were doing at the time. It reminded me of 50s rock, honky tonk and older country (or roots) music that I had been weaned on. There was a healthy dose of blues there and songs that I had heard covered many times. I listened to Exile all the way through. Maybe it was once, possibly twice. Nothing struck me as something I needed to revisit. This album is now considered one of their best but even then with the remasters, it sounds muddy. The mix reminds of a live performance where you strain to hear the lyrics as the mix favours the instruments. I wonder how many rock albums are a result of the drugs and how it affects the listening? I hear Dwight Yoakam and so many other bands that copied the copier. This is a good rock album. I found a few that I would like to listen to again. Torn and Frayed - you can hear some of the same inspiration in bands like the Band and CCR, country inflected rock. I just want to see his face - This is gospel rock. All in all, this was one phase in the Stones career. My friend who I lived with would say it was probably their best phase. While the Stones had played it out for themselves, music still returns to this part. You have to respect that this is one of the records that keeps being pulled out to create the next wave of rock. I would give this a 4 - Relistenable. A record that when I am feeling blue about the direction of rock music, I can put it on and know that someday another band will rediscover it.

Full of catchy blues mixed with rock. It was exactly what I wanted to listen to today. My favorite songs on the album was Rocks Off and Tumbling Dice.

I’ve not really explored the stones outside singles in video games. It appears I’ve missed a lot.

i fuck with this heavy not as hardcore as some of the other stuff i've listened to in the past but i just highkey vibe with it ngl i really like the funk/swing/jazz vibes of the album esp the (trumpet?/sax?) in some of the songs

son los rolling la mejor banda de la historia

Blues, rock and country all in one. A little frontloaded but Sweet Black Angel only miss. BTB of Tumbling Dice/Sweet Virginia the highlight

This is #day642 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to my fourth record by The Stones, aka the culmination of the band's run of critically acclaimed late-'60s/early-'70s albums, or so they say. This is solid stuff through and through, the kind you can just put on and let roll with it, even if there aren't any hits sticking out. Rooted in rock'n'roll and blues rock, the record has an experimental edge. What else is there to say? It's not the shortest album out there. But then again, it is the Stones' first double album, so... Anyway, this is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day643.

Is this my favorite Stones Album now?!

A classic. I still don't think I fully appreciate it and need to listen to it more.

RATING: 9/10 HIGHLIGHT: Loving Cup LOWLIGHT: Turd on the Run

The Rolling Stones are a weird one for me. I enjoy their music, it's great to listen to, and there's parts that feel really great - but it mostly just washes over me. It's just there, you know? Great, but not impactful.

Mycket trevligt.

Fun and interesting.

Listened on YouTube, May 9th 2026, on JBL pocket speaker. Basque Cheesecake baking in the oven. Lydia is doing the vacuuming.

Stones > Beatles imo!!! Sexy rock n roll, iconic voice + frontman performances, wicked guitars. Only critique is this album could have been about 3-4 songs shorter!

Every time I see Rolling Stones I roll my eyes a bit, but this was good. I think the problem is that their more popular stuff is kinda crap, and a lot of the music that was a bit edgy for the time is actually pretty neat and interesting and has held up a lot better.

Not my fav RS album, but it is still very good.

No complaints but now I need to listen to Phish cover the album

Son los rolins a quien no le gustan los rolins

Muy buen álbum

loved - 4 stars

This album took me several tries and several restarts over the course of a few days to get through--which is surprising because I understand The Rolling Stones' roots and influences. I do love the blues tones of this album. Their earlier work is more fun in that aspect and I think it deserves more love, so it was fun to have this album on the list. Overall, I think this album just needed more of my attention than I initially wanted to give it. If I could, I'd give a 3.5 and not a 4, but it's the Stones. You kind of have to round up.

I was always too young for the Stones I felt like but this really slaps

The one Stones album I can put on whenever and feel pretty happy about it. There’s no real classic single here, just a sustained mood/performance.

good album thou like i like old music very much i find this pretty cool

Cool Album! full by my style

already listened

inoffensive and boring

Stones rule

Found myself struggling to find the appeal of the Stones once again, but I gotta say, this album definitely helped me see it. It's such a bizarre and unique style -- twangy blues-rock from a super-white band from England. And yet, I guess it does work. Lots of bangers here. Still do not care for Mick Jagger's voice, but alas. He's a great showman. Fave tracks: - Rocks Off - Casino Boogie - Tumbling Dice - Torn And Frayed - Sweet Black Angel - Loving Cup - Happy - Ventilator Blues - I Just Want To See His Face - All Down The Line - Shine A Light - Soul Survivor

Old blues meets rock

Great album but Mick's voice does start to grate on me after long enough.

Who am I to not give 4 to rs

I haven't listen to many songs of The Rolling Stones before, but this album don't fall out of place in every track, all of them are coherent with one another. The blues influence in the album is just perfect for the identity of The Rolling Stones.

80/100. Not my personal favorite from their catalog. It’s impressively consistent in tone and shows more experimentation compared to their earlier work. While it doesn’t always hit the highs of their best material for me, it’s still a strong album.

well it's a classic, innit?

Ik ben geen groot fan van de rolling stones maar het is ongetwijfeld iconisch.

Soooooooo good. A classic. Never gets old.

It’s rare for me to have no qualms with such a long album

the big bang of contemporary rock and roll

satisfyingly country, I love the slide guitar and the whole vibe, not at all what I thought the stones were like sweet Virginia and torn and frayed really stand out good vibe, upbeat, fun to listen too, hard to pick up on any political meaning in these two particular ones, more of a vibe. In general, very enjoyable, better than I thought and would defo listen again

Overall good. Not that memorable to me but it's just. It's the Rolling Stones being the Rolling Stones. You know what I mean?

I’ve heard this before and I own it. I am the type of insufferable record nerd who will tell you this is not their best album and the run from Aftermath through Their Satanic Majesty’s Request is better than the run from Beggars Banquet through Exile, but I believe it and I’m not being a contrarian. I have a problem where if someone tells me something is the best ever, and then it isn’t, i end up hating it. This isn’t the best album ever, so it took me a long time to get it. This is a very good album! There are some great melodies, riffs, and hooks, the horn and key arrangements are good and not over or under used, and they pull off a double album without getting self important or turning into a rambling mess like a lot of double albums from the time.

I’ve heard good things of this album but I’ve never heard it before. Rocks off: 7/10 High energy rocker, good for an opener. Rip this joint: 6/10 Shake your hips: 5.5/10 Holy. Thats la grange. Casino boogie: 5/10 Tumbling dice: 7/10 Sweet Virginia: 6.5/10 Torn and frayed: 6.5/10 Sweet black angel: 6/10 Loving cup: 7/10 Happy: 6.5/10 Keithy on vocals for a song. The definition of rock and roll. Turd on the run: 5/10 Ventilator Blues: 5.5/10 I just want to see his face: 5/10 Let it loose: 6/10 That guitar does not make it sound like a stones song. That intro threw me off All down the line: 6/10 Stop breaking down: 5/10 Shine a light: 6/10 Soul survivor: 7/10

i want to play guitar an write ong that rock thi har

Mycket bra!

Good old-time rock n roll. Like an elevated bar band.

This might be my favorite Stones record. I like the more blusey tracks, I like the country too.

I’ve never really got The Stones. There’s songs that I do enjoy if I hear them but they’ve never been a band that I will go out of my way to listen to. This one’s getting a 4 but it’s on the low end of my 4’s. It’s really good and I did like it but I don’t think I will go back to it.

blues for dummies

Album bien rutero

The Rolling Stones go country! Very bluesy album. I think thematically this album works really well together, songs just flow into one another.

Plain old good music

Forgive me Rolling Stones I was unfamiliar with your game (this album).

Rudy's favoriete muziek.

As with the previous album I got on this list I’m like why I have I never gotten into them before !!! Very good!!

I liked the upbeat vibe mix of rock and dance in a way

Favourite Songs: Rocks Off Rip This Joint Turd On The Road

This was my first listen all the way through and I loved it. Very grounding in a way I can’t really describe.

Solid stuff, one that grew on me as it progressed

Amazing!!!

This is an incredible, shambolic mess of sorts. It showcases a sort of messy, honky tonk style of rock. Instruments on each track sort of bleed into one another, and Mick Jagger's vocals often get buried into the mix. I wouldn't say the looseness of this album isn't a lack of skill, it sort of seems like it was deliberate which was very different to albums of the early 70's ('flowerchild' era of music). I love the use of the piano in this album. Rock and Roll doesn't really use piano as much and I love that the majority of these songs have a strong presence of a piano. My favourite songs: Stop Breaking Down, All Down The Line, Let It Loose, Soul Survivor.

The further from straight blues the stones get, the better they are, which is what makes their hits so great. Otherwise, they're just a bar band that got lucky. 4.8

My rating 3.6. Another Stones album I had heard of but hadn’t listened to. It was great. Raw and noisy. Just a fun time all the way through.

So good, haven’t listened to that album through in a long time

What a fantastic set it and forget it album. No big song stand outs but a great overall vibe. Really enjoyed it.

This sounds like a raw bar band on a really good night. Funky and fun. This is the sound I imagine when I hear Rolling Stones. Enjoyed more than expected

This album came out during a run of nonstop successful records for The Rolling Stones. In my mind I see Mick Jagger just smiling and confidently knocking it out of the park. The vocal delivery is seductive, the melodies are confident and the sound is everlasting. Right from the start I was hooked and it never really let me go until the end. The range is also quite impressive, it contains blues, country, and even some gospel elements, all culminating in a great rock album. My two favorites are "Rocks Off" with its subtle introspection and an unexpected psychedelic turn halfway through, and "Torn and Frayed".

Hell yeah

Even without the hits this was one of my favorite Stones albums, just because every song on it was consistently good. It could have used one of the big ones on it, however, to boost it into one of the best albums period.

Didn't realize this was basically a country album. Somehow this album is great with absolutely NO hits and I've never heard almost any of these despite being a Stones fan for 25 years.

Masterful blues rock.

Light 4,5

Not my favourite Stones album, but this one's just a nice comfy listen. It has this warm, inviting vibe that makes you want to sing along with it. It does feel a bit samey in parts though and doesn't really justify its length in my opinion, so that's gonna knock a star off for me. Favourite tracks: Rocks Off, Sweet Virginia, Torn and Frayed

7/10. Fav Track - Rip This Joint The Rolling Stones made one of my favorite songs of all time so it's very unsurprising that I enjoyed the sound they provide throughout this album.

143/1001 I never loved this album so much that I played it over and over but I do come back to it time and time again. This just sounds so genuine. One of those the whole is greater than the sum of its parts albums. Ya just gotta play the full album every time. 8/10

Rolling Stones is a major blind spot in my listening history. Pre Spotify wasn’t interested in buying old stuff and their output late 80’s and 90’s was of no interest. In the Spotify world just not got round to it. So first time for this. Started very well - strong opening 3 tracks. Derivative in places without sounding inauthentic if that’s possible. Then a few slower ones. Picked up again from Loving Cup. Though not so enamoured with I Just Want to See His Face. Pleased it wasn’t full of the hits (or at least ones I know). Overall it’s very good rock (with some country and gospel) album. 4. Maybe should see if they released anything else.

Damn fine. The Stones at their raggedy best.

My second Stones album so far, Sticky Fingers being the other. Great album, lots of great songs. It feels needlessly long, which leads to all the blues riffs feeling a bit repetitive. I know this is usually considered the Stones best album, but I liked Sticky Fingers a bit more.

This is the bluesy Stones I love.

This album is like when you finish uni and you move back home to get a job and get on with your life, while wrestling with the cold hard truth that your lifestyle needs to change. University was a wild time. Drinking every night with not a care given to the world, the future, or your role in either. Now here you are borrowing your father's suit for a job interview you don't feel confident about, wishing you had maybe tried harder at uni instead of smashing cheap pints at re:fuel every wednesday night. But that debaucherous idiot is still inside you. The weekend comes around and you want to let loose again. It just doesn't feel the same now. You are run down from five days at work, and suddenly doing a twist-off with your friends doesn't hit in the same way. You search for new weekend kicks, but deep down there is a sadness as you think back to the beer bongs and scrumpy hands from those halcyon days.

Tumbling Dice

Mycket filler tracks men också mycket bangers

Enjoyed it a lot. Great flowing vibes though the whole album, low key and groovy.

Very good but at times all tracks blend into one.

For me personally, the lore around this album always overshadowed the music itself, which has traditionally underwhelmed me. But it hit different this time around, in no small part because of the horns. Without them, Exile on Main Street doesn't work nearly as well. At 18 songs, it still feels long, but there's plenty to like. "Rocks Off" has to be one of their best album openers.

classic album by the stones with their signature blues rock sound with various other influences. nothing to dislike here. solid, through and through. highlights: “rip this joint”, “sweet virginia”, “sweet black angel”, “ventilator blues”

I'll be damned there IS a rolling stones that I enjoy!!

Much more bluesy than I expected beforehand, having known only the Stones' biggest hits. Faves: Rip This Joint, Tumbling Dice, Sweet Virginia

It’s the weekend so I have had two or three listens, which has changed my mind on it. It sounds like a jam, as everything is laid back, and mixes polished and clean (All Down The Line) to rough and fuzzy (Stop Breaking Down). 1. Tumbling Dice 2. Sweet Virginia 3. Stop Breaking Down

This british band makes me feel american. Very good. I love the horns

YUHHHHHHHH wow this is why I do this project. I hope no one in the Rolling Stones did anything terrible… I’m not gonna look this time.

Hmmm first time listening to a rolling stone album I don’t necessarily love this one but I get the hype

Hell yeah

Best Song : Rip This Joint / Sweet Virginia Was somewhat surprised to read how this album is often considered their Magnum Opis, given my unfamiliarity with it, and its release date. I could certainly understand after a few tracks - Rolling Stones attributes are so strongly developed here - incredible blues rock that leans into, at times, Country, Rockabilly, Gospel, Jazz - and incredibly American sound for a British band. The instrumentation is incredibly rich with a very enjoyable blend of brass and guitar. Micks vocals are strong and just slurred enough I wonder if he's gone too far, as usual. What this album lacks, and perhaps I am being too immature, is one or two classic tracks; the songs are great but none standout.

Probably goes on a bit too long but the good stuff on here is *really good*. Didn't realise there were so many hits I knew on one album. Really good.

Classic. Fantastic album encapsulating the themes of the time. Very classic Dad rock for a reason with catchy guitar licks, but some lyrical themes (see 'sweet black angel') feel dated and like they may spoil it as a modern listener. Only not a five star because I prefer slightly faster forms of rock.

Textural

Not quite enough for a 5

Finnes mye av rs som er bedre

Yeah, it's not bad.

This is an excellent album, bought it many years ago, so good to sing along again

Not my cup of tea but yet very powerfull

fire love the rolling stones

Much better than Beggars Banquet because of its better production and livelier tunes. "Tumbling Dice" is the big one everyone remembers, for good reason, with its earworm backing vocals and groovy blues guitar lick.

I've never been a big fan of them, but they're surely an experience and damn well deserving of their recognition. I've been pleasantly surprised, I really enjoyed this album.

Never quite listened to the RS beyond obvious works, and this album has shown me a whole new side of them. This is certainly worth listening to.

Blues and rock with a bit of gospel thrown in; and a favourite track (Tumbling Dice)

Sounds like an hour of The Rolling Stones sprinkled with some New Orleans jazzy twists.

Great stuff, I'm generally already a Stones person, and had never until now fully listened to this record. A bit all over the place and certainly not my fav Stones record, but still lots to hang onto.

I have decided after being inspired by another review to structure my reviews: Cover: 5/5 this is a instantly recognisable cover and that is the sign of something that has become known beyond its original purpose. A cover that makes you examine it each time you see it. Originality: 2/5 this is a very straightforward blues album with a bit of country thrown in. Accessible to and popular with white music fans because like Elvis it is Black music repackaged for white consumers. Quality: 5/5 lack of Originality does detract from this being an album of sustained quality, good music, song writing and delivery

You know blues is fun

La grange > shake your hips This one starts as some pretty generic sorta boring blues rock with some good songs sprinkled in. It just really didn’t do it for me like the others have so far. Loving cup was enjoyable. I’m also shocked at how little I recognized from this for it being such a famous album. I think in a different mood this could ride as my favorite stones album, I do see the vision, and I’m trying to keep that in mind, but definitely my least favorite stones record so far on this first listen at 2am. I came back to it and I was definitely too harsh but my feelings are still similar, this is a good 4/5 rock album that, like most things, if I spent a week really diving into it and listening I would grow to love but that's simply not how the list works~

Massive appropriation, ridiculous song titles, but this just locks in.

Aber das andere war flotter

So good bro fav song tumbling dice

Mick Jagger has said that he happened to live in the vanishing small period in the music industry where an artist was able to make real money.

Excellent

Zeker nog een keer luisteren.

Such a good album. This is the first album where the foray into roots/country rock sounds natural, and I personally like that the vocals are mixed a little low. A definite turning point for the Stones and for rock music in general.

very nice sound, I wouldn't listen to it every day butt it has a nice vibe to it.

I feel like this is one of those quintessential albums that need to be listened to in one sitting. I enjoyed so many of the songs, but they all exist so much better with each other. I loved how this album kept the groove going the whole way through. Those whining guitars and steady drumbeats carry on the whole way through. This is a bit of a shorter review, but there’s not much to say and a lot to love! I’m giving this album 4/5 ⭐️! It’s close to a 5 but I’m saving my first 5 for something that really blows me away! 11/1089

Classic for a reason. A bit bloated, especially side C. 7/10

Buen disco.

Time to go listen to Liz Phair's response to this album next.

Call me the tumbling diiiiice. Stupid British take on dither drawl rock other than that. Mick Jaggers dumb “honky Tonk” vocals really get to me here. Sticky fingers was the only album I could really handle it and that’s because it wasn’t every. Fucking. Song. Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Happy. These are the songs I really care about. Idk what it is but it just brings me back to my grandmothers house in Massachusetts, I don’t think she listened to a lot of Stones because she’s a Beatles fan but this music reminds me of the times. Nostalgia points and a few bangers, album cover is iconic too.

Not an album I've listened to much but enjoyed rediscovering it. It has a really good cross section of Stones tunes and styles in one album (well a double when released in '72) Might not have the big hits but is a great collection.

Oh this was amazing, I listened to it while drawing and even though it did not match the mood of the drawing it was really nice, this is the first full album I listened to by the rolling stones but I already knew them, though it did kinda fade into the background

Bruh. Another Rolling Stones. Is it too much for a girl to ask for a little a variety? Jesus Christ. I do feel like I know them a little better now, but what’re the odds bro come on. Rocks Off - 7 Spoiler alert, the Rolling Stones are on drugs — a lot. I feel like this is a song about the high roller druggie rock n roll life. Weirddd vocal effect in the bridge, I do like how it resolves though. Rip This Joint - 6 This one has like a 20s swing and southern vibe to it. I can see this one being so fun to hear live. Mick Jagger is def moreso yelling at me in this one. It’s upbeat and fast and very rock n roll. Shake Your Hips - 6 Holy nasal in “…shake, babe”, but this is a cover I guess. It’s good. It doesn’t have a ton of dynamic to go anywhere Casino Boogie - 6 They literally said they wrote it by picking lyrics out of a hat. I like the sax, feels very bluesy and adds a flavor to the song. Yea it was a vibe, kind of filler song energy but was still good. Tumbling Dice - 9 Gospel?? This vibe is of my favorite types of Stones songs. Driving beat and rich melody moving the song forward, very bluesy and soulful but matches the guitar riffing. This is a good one. Adding this. A classic on this album for a reason. Sweet Virginia - 7.5 Harmonicaaaa yes and acoustic out the gate. Very country feeling with the chord progression. God is this stupid project going to turn me into a Stones fan. I feel like I went from “hate” to really liking some of their stuff and feeling more comfortable listening to them. You just have to find the good stuff first, know the history and backstories and you can really get into it. Another drug anthem, but it has a blues/country that almost has you rooting for them?? Crazy feeling, but this one is good too. I may have to also add this one. Torn and Frayed - 8 No intro here. Immediately into it. The songs on this album are significantly easier to listen to compared to say, Beggars Banquet. I love the driving rock and blues energy they have here. This one is about a man who loves music. I’d like to think Mick Jagger is singing this to the younger versions of the band’s members who would have gotten started in this industry for their unrelenting love of music. I think I’m going to add this one too. Sweet Black Angel - 4 Okay respect the Rolling Stones’ polical stance here however, idk if this is my favorite — feels a little appropriation-y and idk if this the group who should be singing about this particular issue. Loving Cup - 6.5 Okay the Genius background for this track is a little biased toward the Stones hahah, but I do think this is a good song. It has a very “we’re all friends at the bar vibe” in a way that supports human connection and love. It also likens a relationship to a good night out drinking (“what a beautiful buzz” to see a person’s face and to feel them kissing him). An extra half point awarded for the use of horns in this song. Happy - 6 Keith Richards track? Ok king. He talks about how there is all these things that someone “should” be doing (i.e. working for the man, not taking candy from strangers, saving money) and he isn’t doing any of these because he wants his love to keep him happy rather than doing the conventional things. A little simple and has the vibe of a filler song, but good. Turd On The Run - 4.5 Insane title. What in the world are these lyrics and how does it even remotely connect to this title. It has a very southern vibe to it. Very short, kind of repetitive, and doesn’t really make sense to me, but maybe I’m missing something. Ventilator Blues - 7 I would also have the blues if I were on a ventilator. This one is unique to me. Basically saying that everybody is going to die, and to make that process better you may consider being a good person to reflect well on your life in the end. A very “Man in the Mirror” moment at the end too where they’re asking are you going to fight that? If so, what’re you gonna do about it. I Just Want to See His Face - 4.5 I feel like I just started coming into consciousness with this one. Little gospel-y. The song bio talks about this being more of a jam session with a couple other musicians and Jagger came up with the lyrics then and there. Very religious message here calling out some hypocrisy in religion. Saying that people don’t often want to walk and talk like Jesus did, they only want to “see His face” and have a very surface level relationship with religion (to presumably use it against people or for their own gain). Also noticing that in the verses they are accusing others of doing this (“You just want to see his face”), but the title is named “I Just Want…” soooo interesting, is this a callout to himself? Kind of odd as a song in this album, I’m not quite sure how it fits. But I think it calls on the musical ability of this band to a very stripped down (jam seshy) level. Similar to an acoustic feel. Let It Loose - 6 I guess the main character in this song is entering in a relationship that he’s not really invested in. He’s just kind of there. It’s actually kind of draining him, but its become a crutch of sorts. HORNS again, that is how RS is going to keep me invested in their music tbh, how many great horn sections can they include. The end of the song is that relationship ending and him needing to end it for his well being. All Down the Line - 8 This one is fun. I like the fast-paced and upbeat tempo. This is the only one I’ve added in the back-half of the album. THis style of Stones song is my favorite, like the pure rock with some blues and even jazzy elements. Stop Breaking Down - 6 You and me both Rolling Stones. What is this instrument off the bat. This is the other cover song on this album. It’s good. Shine a Light - 6.5 maybe 7 Aw this one is another song about drugs, but about the drug use of Brian Jones and how it really effected him up until his death and this song could kind of be “I wish you the best” and also a memorial song for him as he passed just before this albums release. What this song in a movie? It sounds kind of familiar. Soul Survivor - 7 I like the play on words here. This is a super fun closer to a rock and blues album. It’s gonna be the death of me and the song is titled “soul survivor” yeaaaa super fun. Good album, I’m def seeing the progression and fame level rise here from the considerable bump in quality and lyrics. Idk if I’m getting stolkholm syndrome or something because I fear I’m becoming a Stones fan. Smh.

divertido. me tuvo bailando mas de la mitad de los temas. parece cuando el cantante de la bandita se enamora y no puede evitar que se le escape las sonrisitas mientras canta.

It is funny that with their 10th record they make a synthesis of Rock N' Roll. That tells me that the Stones, while being iconic in their genre, are a bit stuck in their lane. Here we have a good album, it flows, it is well constructed but I have two main problems : I don't hear a hit, (plenty of songs I like, that are pretty, but no mainstay of their career in my opinion) and the second thing that is even more important, I am not surprised even a little. It is well made, mostly listenable in full, (and it should be when it is your 10th album) but yeah I have heard this throughout the history of rock, an history that they wrote in part. Little ambition and a bit tired, but can't say nothing bad about the craftsmanship.

8.5/10 Chanson pref : Shine a light

This was filled with a ton of really good songs, but didn't quite hit that over the top absolute must listen banger mark for me, yet still, very enjoyable!

Really solid classic rock album! Idk how many more times I’ll listen to it (unless I’m in a Stones mood) but I’m definitely glad I’ve listened to it at least once

Not a big Stones fan but this is a banger. Love the honkey tonk influences!

Solid album with some classic songs.

I liked this album. The Rolling Stones have very listenable and pleasurable albums

So damn good. I mean, c’mon! It’s Exile On Main Street

was pretty good!

I didn't love this at first when I heard it years ago - it's long, bluesy and goes for stretches without a hook, but it's gotten under my skin over the years and could be among maybe my top 3 or 4 Stones albums. It sounds like a band playing in a room, and when the horns and gospel backing vocals come in i want to actually be there. Most songs get in, make their point and get out, so it never drags. A sign of a good double is when you can play a single side or one of the records and it still holds together as a classic. This is definitely one of those for me. I'm hesitating between 4 and 5 honestly.

Fav song: Loving Cup/Ventilator Blues Overall: 3.5/5

Loved that one. It was very funky fresh and the beats and just the overall structure of the song kept me on my feet.

I’ve never been a huge Stones fan (which I guess makes me a Beatles guy). Regardless this was really my first time listening to this album cover to cover. And while there aren’t any huge standouts it was a very pleasurable listen.

The Stones are inarguably one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and that was on display on this record. There were a series of different layers to a bunch of these tracks and it all added up to what is a very good album. Loving Cup was a big hit for me. Loved that track. The rest of this had a bunch of tunes that were fun, which was the general vibe of the whole record. Excellent listen

8/10 Favourite: Tumbling Dice Least Favourite: Casino Boogie

The best stones album? Even the non hits are well crafted. But just redo the country style tracks

I mean, it’s the Stones.

Enjoyed this

twas good

Loved the guitars and the vocals!

Very high energy, rolling stones

Viel besser als erwartet Ich werde noch Stones Fan

Loved this when it came out, and still love it now.

It has been a while since I listened to this album all the way through. Tumbling Dice is one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs. The rest of the songs are good. I felt like it picked up in the second half. This is not my favorite Stones album, but it is still some really great blues/rock. A great band in the zone.

I enjoyed this, good album

4 out of 5. Rock solid Stones album.

I liked this album a lot. I have heard bits and pieces of it over the years, but never really sat down and listened to it from start to finish. It's one of the better Stones albums. Not my absolute favorite (can't beat Sticky Fingers), but this is really good. 4/5 stars

I’ve never been a massive fan of the Stones’s sound, compared to the Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. but I appreciated the hell out of this album. Very ambitious, incredibly unique. Lots of Gospel and R&B influence, with many non-guitar driven songs. I can’t quite give it a 5 because it’s not quite for me, but a hell of a record.

Really solid tracks, nothing major stands out to me but I could see getting this on vinyl and having it on the background. The whole thing is great, I’d say 4 stars is fair

There are a few albums were the stories of the making are almost more powerful than the album: Iron Butterfly’s Inna Gotta Da Vida; Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors; 311 Transitor; and this one are on the top. This is a solid album with great production quality and a back-to-basic blues. It’s kind of funny that one of the critics Best Albums Ever list is a song titled Turd on the Run. I was surprised that there were no historical “hits” from the album. All Down the Lone could have been radio gold. Shake Your Hips is a very traditional blues intro (Muddy Waters; John Lee Hooker; ZZTop all did it). There are a lot of great songs here, if not a lack of notable bad ones. The song that grabbed me today was Torn and Frayed, which I know was talking about them but it felt like me. Denis Leary once said there is a Stones song for every occasion. This album alone could cover that. I get why it’s a classic.

i can listen to this on a long drive in a vintage mustang speeding down a highway in the grand canyon 100% good fucking album all songs are decent at minimum. some are insane and some aren't.

Was busy and only got to give it one listen. I loved it! Excited to relisten and discover more.

Classic stones, no need to say anything more.

Pretty great

There are arguments that this album is both more and less than the sum of its parts. On the one hand, it has none of the band's biggest hits, but it's still one of their best albums. On the other hand, while it has a lot of great songs, it still feels overlong and disjointed. The best songs find the Stones in dirty blues rock mode, which is my favorite sound of theirs. "Rocks Off," "Happy," and "Tumbling Dice" are absolute bangers. Any time the horns come in is a treat. While the blues and gospel tinges add a lot of depth, the songs that lean heavily into those sounds find the band out of their depth. Around "I Just Want to See His Face" is where the album starts to drag. This could have been pared back into a tighter album, which keeps it from being their best, but the variety and excellent songs sprinkled throughout make it worth the longer listen.

This is a great album in terms of the fact that I love New Orleans and this is so heavily influenced by that sound. I love the piano, the horns, the pedal steel, the backup singers. It's solid all the way through, not a bad song in there. At the same time, not a stand out either. There's not one song that stuck out to me, not one that got stuck in my head. It's a great album, but I think I expected just a LITTLE more in terms of hits.

Tumbling Dice

Have never been a big stones gal but I’m starting to understand

Good vibes, easy listen

Suppose everyone here knows this pretty well. All I can say is the non-hits remind us just how damn fun and creative the band could be. The roots run deep, all the way from Memphis and the delta to France.

I never cared too much for this one. but today... I don't know, i just hit different. I don't love that Mick's vocals are way too far down in the mix. He's hard to understand in a good mix, but on this album, I didn't understand 80% of what he was going on about. Still, I dug the vibe, and I'm down to re-explore this one again.

I had a disjointed listen to this album over the weekend but I loved it even more this way. The Rolling Stones became my soundtrack throughout the weekend and it just felt so great, I felt so cool with my windows down and my hair blowing...rocks off! Even though this is not my favorite Stones album, it's The Classic Stones album in my book. Had I been asked in a Quizzo to name a Stones song with the word "turd" in it, I would have lost. Not anymore!

If I was compiling a Rolling Stones 'Best Of', it probably wouldn't include any tracks from Exile. However, as an album it still rates as one of their best. Everything hangs together well, and they haven't done a better album since.

Awesome album full of deep cuts, secret gem

Je m'attendais à dire "encore le même genre d'albums" mais finalement c'était une bonne découverte avec quelques pistes qui m'ont bien plu (Let It Loose), donc 4/5

It's hard to objectively listen to the stones and separate them from both their legendary status and their existence as perpetual radio background music

Not a huge stones fan but this us a really good album.

It’s not my favorite Stones album because of the sameness of the songs and it being a double album set at that. But it’s a vibe that resonates with me so as boring as it gets it’s not unenjoyable to me.

Best Rolling Stones album and a must listen for any fans of the blues.

Good, classic stones. Don't really see why this is head and shoulders above their other albums but it is consistent and good.

I think this is now the 5th Rolling Stones album on the list. From the previous 4 I had been coming to the conclusion that they are really just a singles band and most of their songs are filler. So imagine my surprise when their most consistent one is a double album with none of their biggest songs on.

I agree that most of their albums are a bunch of filler and 2/3 really good songs. This album was consistently good cover to cover, and even warranted a repeat

It was a fine album and none of the songs were bad, neither were they exciting. 3.5 rounded up. Favorite songs: Shake Your Hips, Shine a Light

Every rock fan knows the revered "Exile" album by name, but I've never quite understood the hype or why Rolling Stone magazine named it their #1 album of all time. It's that album that a true fan can say is their favorite since it's not loaded with hits and it makes them look cool to their novice friends. "Rocks Off" is a fring hit with 35M listens. "Tumbling Dice" is a legit rock classic (107M). "Sweet Virginia" is another fringe radio hit (54M) and "Happy" is the one song with Keith on vocals that folks know and enjoy (33M). "Shine A Light" is also on that fringe list (35M) but is super good and my favorite track outside of "Dice". Collectively they all make up a solid cohesive album. The rest are good glue tracks and as Wikipedia describes it Exile is known for its wide stylistic range and the strong influence of Delta blues, gospel music, and country rock. I found "Torn & Frayed", "Turd On The Run", "I Just Want To See...", & "Let It Loose" were tracks that could have easily found the cutting room floor vs doing a double album. You cannot deny the popularity of this album and the amount of listens. It's had a huge impact on rock music so the influence and longevity are there. 4 stars since it all makes sense and fits together so well.

Closing out the sweet spot in the Stones' long trajectory, this is another masterpiece. Just a few too many extras thrown in to sustain the 5-star rating from start to finish. But exceptional just the same.

70s rock with blues, rock and roll, swing, country and gospel. Considered their best by many. Just very good rock, incredibly American for a British band. Insanely long.

British band makes one of the most iconic/influential southern rock albums. The Stones at their most unhinged.9/10 Fav tracks- “rocks off” “ ventilator blues@

Nearly didn’t bother listening, but yeah it’s very good.

Favorite Track: Sweet Virginia
