Great album. Very nostalgic to listening to it non-stop in middle school. Still know just about all the words. Timely for current political environment too. Should listen to more.
One of my favorite albums.
Highlights - Jesus of suburbia
It still slaps embarrassingly hard.
This is a top 10 album for me. I remember hearing this as an 8 year old and being blown away. Lyrics are amazing and every track is brilliant.
5 stars. Already. Haven't had to press play, been listening to this for almost 20 years. I remember when my parents asked me if I knew what "propaganda" was as a result of this album.
Amazing album, my absolute fav is Jesus of Suburbia, 3 songs in one.
Absolute classic from the band that got me into music in the first place. My first favorite album 🖤
Listened to before, favourite album of all time. Probably nostalgia but idc.
Classic rock album
Ja gewoon goed
Ja dit is het! Alsof ik weer 15 ben 'Are we the waiting' was voor my een hidden gem
Not their best, nevertheless an epic one
Pretty stellar for sure.
I used to like them a little, and now I like them a lot. The band grew on me. I am really sad that I didn’t get to see the stage production of American idiot.
Yeah, this was great. I had a copy of Dookie when it came out, and I liked it OK for a month or two, but I got bored of it. By the time this album came out, I was like, "Really? Green Day? How are they still a thing?" And I remember my boss Tony telling me to check it out, but at the time my head wasn't in the right space for it. Anyway, I knew and liked a couple of tunes going into this, but I'd never listened to the whole thing before. Glad I did today. It's ambitious, well-performed, -arranged, and -written punk pop. Dude really has a gift for catchy melodies, which I am always a sucker for. This sounds like an album that will reward multiple listens, and I will be there for them.
Takes you back to those angsty teenage years!
Like a time machine, listening to this sent back to the past, when I was a long haired stoner sitting in my friends car. Smoking weed out of a seashell pipe, I can taste the slight saltiness from the ocean on the pipe. He turns to me and says "hey man, have you heard the new green day album, dude, its actually pretty good" He connects his no-brand discman into his 92 corollas tape deck, I hear the slight click of the disc being placed the snap of disc lid closing over the ocean waves as the sun begins to set and for the next hour I ignore a stunning, glowing tropical sunset as I sit enthralled by what comes out of the speakers. I really feel like this album captures the impotent rage of newly politically conscious suburban teens in the early bush era. Production is nicely polished. Having the balls to come out with a direct attack on American warmongering, anti- intellectualism and jingoism in the climate of post 9/11 America has to be noted. Despite what the 'hardcore' punk fans think, this is punk. 9/10 but 5 stars because I know it'll piss off a NOFX fan.
If you were to ask me for my favourite Green Day album, I would probably pick this...unless I was to say Dookie. Both albums, are two pivotal albums for this band, Dookie making them 90's pop-punk icons, while American Idiot was a new direction and possibly more influential. This was the blueprint for future concept albums, a rock operas, and a political/anti-war albums. I think this might be one of the best rock opera's of the 00's (it doesn't beat The Black Parade). One of the biggest problems with this album is the way so many songs appear on a single track! Just separate them for fuck sake! Like I would listen to Give Me Novacaine more if I didn't have to listen to She's a Rebel. Standouts: American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends
Way more consistent than I remember. Well written with a diverse sound. Very happy to hear that it’s still a relevant album and sound.
For the genre of that kind of pop relevant punk sound this is a perfect album.
This album was full of bangers, I definitely understand why people were obsessed.
Nostalgic
Album of my childhood
Hey, I’m familiar with this one! This one brings back some memories. It was released after I started high school and at the time, I wasn’t heavy into music. I had a few bands I enjoyed but I didn’t have a familiarity with Green Day. However, most of my friends did and were anxiously awaiting this album’s release. Due to that, I’ve heard this one quite a few times when I was younger and it brought my attention to GD. The album starts strong and keeps the momentum going. I don’t typically enjoy songs longer than 4 minutes, but they work in here and don’t slow the album down any. I’m not sure I’d pick them to listen to in a solitary context. This album is comfort music to me. If I’m sad, it can make me happy, if I’m bored, it can energize me, and if I just want to relax, I can just sit and enjoy it.
Oh man, this album was my life as a teenager. I’m sure if I’d gone the Nu Metal route instead, then this review would have been similar to the Linkin Park one. But I was a punk, so here we go. Todd In The Shadows is on record saying that he thinks the political stuff is the weakest part of the album (which I know other reviews have pointed out, but I quote professional sources dammit 😂) but it’s only really the title track and Holiday that have anything explicitly political to say, and I personally think Holiday is really quite a good political statement. But if we ignore the political stuff, we’re still left with a lot of pretty solid character pieces and representations of disaffected and alienated youth, who in the story are left behind by the Bush presidency and the aftermath of the war or terror, but are actually representative of people from Billie Joe Armstrongs own youth left behind by the Reagan presidency and the aftermath of Reaganomics, but could equally be applied to youth left behind by the Obama presidency, and the aftermath of the 2008 recession, the Trump presidency and the aftermath of *gestures vaguely* or, in my own case various increasingly conservative Tory governments and the aftermaths of austerity and Brexit. The theme of disaffection is universal, and obviously resonates with the young people that the album is marketed towards. But I do think that there’s a lot here that can be enjoyed by everyone. Billie Joe is great at hooks, and a sharp smart lyricist. There’s a really strong showcasing of classic pop sensibility presented within a rock context. It makes a lot of sense that this reminds me more than a bit of The Who. American Idiot is a fantastic album. There is a reason why it continues to be listened to and loved by subsequent generations of young people left behind by an uncaring callous and cruel political system. When you hear it at the right age, it just changes your life
★: \"Jesus of Suburbia\", \"Holiday\",
Love! Amazing drumming! Really sad guy though. Tough lyrics.

The nostalgia!!!!
5/5
Not my cup of tea. But while I like it a lot less than I did two decades ago, I appreciate its anthemic and arcebic bite.
Fijne 5 sterretjes
Just the best concept album I’ve ever heard. So many poignant songs - like a love-letter to a punk rock kid written by the jaded, older version of the same. It was the album that made me realise my adulthood.
Green Day at their peak. Jesus of Suburbia is like the bohemian rhapsody of punk rock. Other albums like Dookie might have better songs, but this album is just miles ahead of their other projects.
I remember when this came out. I don't think I listened all the way thru. First time today and I think it kicks ass for what it is. I thought Dookie was great. I like my pop punk like this, short, catchy and I can sing along. It doesn't have to be a classic for me to appreciate it. Solid 5 star pick for me dawg.
Great album. Loose concept, but great songs. Took the pop-punk format to a higher level. The song structures, guitar work, and drums are all top notch. Great songwriting and unique melodies and transitions. Too many highlights.
An album that will always likely remain frozen in time, but may never “sound old.” That churning guitar and BJA’s voice are about as 2004 as it gets. Very nostalgic for myself, especially a poignant tune like Wake Me Up When September Ends. Really enjoyed finding the album tracks as good as the hits.
rocked 6 year old me's world
Incredible album. I know every song by heart.
Bangers! Holds up surprisingly well.
So many singles off this album
Jet fuel can't burn steel bars
This album is great. Green Day is like the band that grew up with us. The music has become more refined and sophisticated but the same angst and disobedience remain. The melodic harmonies presenting dystopian lyrics are buying a latte while the world burns. It's the life of their generation.
A classic of course
Punk musical?
One of my favorite albums, hit me when I was still a kid. Great on a re-listen.
I LOVE GREEN DAY!!!!!!
One of my favorite pop punk albums.
So much nostalgia and some really great songs. Cohesive, and one of their best works.
Juhuuu
I love this album. Have listened to it since it's debut. It's hard to put into perspective how much of an impact this album had on music at the time. Not just the album, but the performances Green Day put on for this album were amazing. Great album.
Am I the American Idiot?
One of my favorite albums of all time. I grew up on greenday.
I know this probably comes from nostalgia, but after so many years I still find this album impeccable
Love this album. I remember when it came out, back when music used to drop on Tuesdays. I had recently graduated from college and used to meet my friends at a bar in Westwood every Tuesday because they had 50¢ beers. I bought this album on the way and sat in my car listening to the entire thing before heading into the bar. I was instantly enthralled.
Big angsty vibes. A classic
High school. A classic. Wake me up when september comes.
The people who said that this didn't age well can shove it. Musically, this album is unbelievable. Just epic from start to finish. The statements made on suburbia, people just going through life existing, American government propaganda, etc are all arguably even more prevalent today than when it was written. Just because it's not treated with the same eloquence as somebody like Rage Against the Machine doesn't mean that the album didn't age well or had a pointless message. Okay rant over. Back to the music. Billy Joe Armstrong really sets himself apart from the rest of the field in terms of songwriting on this album. The fact that Green Day has had *several* eras of relevance and styles is enough evidence of it, but American Idiot was what got that statement to the mountaintop. Jesus of Suburbia is one of the greatest songs ever written. Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are timeless classics. American Idiot was an unbelievably huge opener. But every other song on the album is special too. The double tracks all work, even when they're wildly different styles. Just an awesome, awesome album that I will never hesitate to listen to. Favorite track: Jesus of Suburbia
Just a few days ago I claimed that U2’s The Joshua Tree has one of the best 1-2-3 punches in history, but the first three songs of Green Day’s American Idiot are superior. The opening and title track is as sobering as it is funny with its not-so-subtle callout of the Fox News media machine, and it’s only grown more relevant in the nearly two decades since its release ahead of Dubya’s 2004 showdown with Democratic challenger John Kerry. I have to say I appreciate the algorithm gifting us this album the day after Rupert Murdoch announced he’s stepping down as chairman. In the words of Logan Roy: Fuck off! The second song, “Jesus of Suburbia,” is to Green Day as “Bohemian Rhapsody” is to Queen, chronicling the collective plight of those who live in broken homes through an amalgamation of what could be several different songs. As far as songwriting goes, it’s the best work the band has ever done. “Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams” rounds out the legendary trio, and is a personal favorite of mine for getting fired up. Unlike The Joshua Tree, however, the album goes much deeper than the first three songs. “Wake Me up When September Ends” may have been the first YouTube video I ever saw when the platform launched in 2005 (I explicitly remember seeing “Hello Goodbye” by the Beatles and “Crazy Frog” by, uh, Crazy Frog, around the same time). Songs like “St. Jimmy,” “Give Me Novacaine,” and “Letterbomb” give us a little more context around the protagonist of the album, and would be the top tracks on most of Green Day’s other albums. American Idiot is one of the greatest albums of the 2000s, and shows that the rock operas of the seventies can transfer over to the rock genre of the 21st century. As the magnum opus of a band that served as a cross-millennia bridge, the record gets an easy five stars from me.
biased aber teenage classic hehe
21st September 2023 Listened on the drive home from Norfolk. One of the albums of my teenage years!
Nice album with Nice sound!
Punk Rock Opera Loved it. Some classics in there. Was an ambitious album for Green Day given their earlier stuff before this. But nailed it!
Just a fantastic rock opera. Such a fucking great, energetic album with some of Green Day’s best cuts
Man, 13 year old me felt so cool listening to this album! One of those albums where my nostalgia is helping it out. But I think it rocks! Especially Jesus Of Suburbia, I always liked that one. This is peak post-9/11 punk
a pop punk masterpiece. its a perfect album from american idiot to whatsername.
One of my faves
Probably one of if not the best rock albums of the early 2000s, extremely political in a way that rock music needs to be
Mainly for the nostalgia, but man that first half slaps
Fantastic album resonating coming of age album for a society shaped post 9/11 and the Iraq war which still feels relevant today.
Iconic pop-punk. I love a good concept album and the big, sweeping centerpiece tracks on here really anchor all the shorter, punchier hits that you know and love.
American Idiot been one of my favorite albums since I first heard it in middle school over 15 years ago. It's cohesive, consistent, self-referential, emotional, and just brilliant. I love every song. This might be my personal favorite entry on the list so far.
Yeah, this album is very well known and much loved by me already.
SO GIVE ME NOVACAINEEEEEEEEEEEE
- American Idiot: Banger, don't really love the f-slur but it's a product of its time. - Jesus of Suburbia: The GOAT, each part is so fun to sing and they're all so different but all fire. - Holiday: Another banger, very 2004-pilled politically but it's kinda based. - Boulevard of Broken Dreams: I defy anyone to not sing along to the chorus. - Are We the Waiting: Great one to sing along to, prepares me for the upcoming uptempo jam. - St. Jimmy: Has there ever been a "1,2,3,4!" that went harder? - Give Me Novacaine: I'm not normally an emo guy but I feel this song, maybe due to nostalgia but we ball. - She's a Rebel: Not an extreme banger but but fun to sing and pretty catchy melody. - Extraordinary Girl: Pretty interesting musically but I feel like it's not as fun to sing along to and this album really lends itself to singing along. - Letterbomb: I really like this song but I honestly never listen to it because I have to listen to Extraordinary Girl and the weird mean nursery rhyme thing. - Wake Me up When September Ends: I still like this song but I think I've heard it too many times. I used to love it but now I feel it's kinda just a nothing song like it shouldn't even be around in the area. - Homecoming: Another banger, I think I'm still taking JoS over this but it's close. - Whatsername: Nice little ditty to close out the album, not my favorite but it's nice.
Great songwriting and extremely catchy tunes. Definitely need to be in the mood to listen to the high energy delivery and at times anxiety inducing vibes.
8.2/10
The first album I ever bought as a young teenager. Masterpiece. All the singles are awesome. Boulevard of broken dreams was on the radio every single day and I don't think I got sick of it. St. Jimmy is underrated, great punk tune.
Best rock album of the 00s
This is by far Greendays best record. People will argue dookie, but this album is nearly a masterpiece. I can't give the album a FIVE (because I didn't give ratm a 5) but it's as close to a 5 as possible. The album is somewhat frontloaded, Jesus of Suburbia possibly their best ever song. While listening through the City of the Damned bit, I thought to myself that it may be greendays best part of any song they've written. The low point of the album is She's A Rebel. That song could be on any greenday album, whereas the rest of the tracks could only be on this record. The album is held together by the two long songs, I would have preferred the album end on Homecoming. Some of the hits are overplayed to the point where its harder to evaluate how good they are. One of the other negatives of the album are the solos, I don't want some rip roaring technical fast solo, but I theres something about them that haven't aged that well, it may be the guitar effect on the solos, but it's a minor gripe. Upon listening to the album, it's easy to see how it lends itself to being a musical, its a rock opera and clearly a heavy influence on the Black Parade. I heard elements of Joshua tree. The sad part about the greatness of the album is that after it, theyve not released any albums that are even vaguely listenable. This was their peak, and everything after has lived in the shadow of this superb album VERY VERY HIGH FOUR
Nothing but bangers
Heard before Saved 9/9 Top track: Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Having established themselves within the genre of chucklehead power punk, American Idiot was a complete surprise from Green Day. It has intelligent social commentary, much of which is sadly still true, coupled with a more sophisticated power pop (not punk). Easily the best album from Green Day and a classic of the early 2000s.
Love this album. One of my all time favourites. Instant classic.
Klassiker.

American Idiot is the The Wall for millennials but with less hopelessness and even more political dissatisfaction. An anti-US, anti-consumerism and anti-capitalism monument, this record ended up defining large parts of the 00's music scene post-9/11. The album and Green Day themselves became synonymous with criticism of the Bush administration, and 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' was used in everything from protests of the Iraqi war to memorials after Hurricane Katrina. The songwriting is top notch, melodies are catchy but never boring, and the production on the guitar is otherworldly. It makes me want to bring out the eyeliner and the red tie, and I would not change a single thing about this teenage-angst ridden phenomenon.
Achieving successfully a pop/punk rock opera in 2004 is a master move. This album contains many important hits from the 2000s and one of Green Day's finest cut : Jesus Of Suburbia, an unexpected 8 minutes track with movements, killers riffs and awesome drum parts. On a personal level, this is one of the most important album from my teenage years. It changes everything.
Probably a 4 but I like it so a 5. I listen to a lot of the songs in this album all the time. This was the first CD I ever got to pick out myself so maybe I'm a little biased and nostalgic but I don't care. GOOD ALBUM
1. American Idiot - absolutely love this song so catchy and very upbeat, love the lyrics, the vocals and guitar interlude-10/10 (added to playlist) 2. Jesus of suburbia- love the rhythm of this song, especially in the first part of this song, vocals on point, love the switch up when the piano and acoustics come in, not too keen on the backing vocals. i love how this song has the different sections like its moving along with a scene in a theatre or film, very theatrical, love how it switches from a fast angry pace to an almost innocent instrumental, love the bass switch up too 8/10 (liked the song) 3. Holiday/boulevard of Broken dreams- (holiday)- love the guitar on this one, very good consistency, Armstrong vocals again killing it, chorus very catchy, love the lyric "another protestor has crossed the line" love the monologue type bit ( bobd) love the switch up to this song, my fav green day song, love the guitar effect throughout the song, lyrics are very relatable vocals amazing, catchy , love the piano notes after first chorus, love how the song gets heavier near the end- 10/10 (added to playlist) 4. Are we the waiting/St. Jimmy- ( awtw)- love the guitar, Armstrong vocals are strong, strong rhythm, love the echoed voices too, chorus is very catchy, love the reference to "Jesus of suburbia", however i did feel like this one did drag a tiny bit, became a bit repetitive ( st jimmy)- love how this song was more faster than the other song, this did feel very pop punk, rhythm was good, however was a bit too fast to keep up with, overall this one did drag a bit- 7/10 5. Give me novocaine/She's a rebel- (gmn)- love the acoustic on this very very nice rhythm, loved the vocals on this, guitar effects were brilliant, loved the guitar solo- (rebel)- again loved the switch up to this one, very upbeat, love the lyrics, love the references to the other songs on this album, loved the drums- 8/10 (liked the song) 6. Extraordinary girl/Letter bomb- (extrod girl)- not too keen on the drums at the start of this song, however I loved the guitar and drums had amazing consistency, loved the lyrics, again was relatable for aspects (no I'm not a prozzie), (letterbomb)- loved the little singalong at the beginning, the build up was good, however was not too fond on the little screech billie let out, I did get a bit bored of this one, found it a little bit weaker than the others-7/10 7. Wake me up when September ends- another green day classic, love Armstrong vocals, a bit of a sad turn for the album, considering the background and lyrics to the song, love the guitar picking, love the gradual build up too, it was fucking amazing, very catchy tune. - 9/10 8. Homecoming- found the start a bit boring, vocals were ok, love the instrumentals, drums and guitars were brilliant, found this one a bit boring, as i thought it did drag a bit- 5/10 9. Whatsername- nice lyrics, loved the rhythm, vocals were on point, love the guitar build up, 6/10 overall this album is truly a masterpiece, being one of my top 10 albums of all time, I have always been amazed by green days work.. the songs are very consistent and love how they all compliment on another, lyrics and theme on post 9/11, American culture and war really show you the real world in just a matter of an album. fav song: holiday/boulevard of broken dreams, least fav: homecoming overall average rating:7.8/10
Listen to Green Day mature since Dookie to this album is like seeing your drug dealer buddy who’s all grown up with a house, family and job. I’ve always liked this album. Great to be reintroduced to it again. Still love it.
i feel like this is probably the best 2000s punk rock album out there, has variety interesting topics great singalong and nice riffs. its the complete package
Love it. Might be the only Green Day album I've ever bought actually, definitely a maturity to it that I wasn't expecting from them at the time. Playing is tight, and it holds a consistent theme throughout. Not a weak track IMO. 5/5
A gem through and through. The Led Zeppelin of our time.
The defining musical work of Bush-era America. Angry, snotty, melancholic, a blast.
That's me!
Loads of classics on here, and I love the way songs blend into each other. Lots of variety and a political intent - love it.
I never gave this album a chance when it was new. I was so done with Greenday at this point. But fuck, it's good.
Better than I remember
Grew up on this album! Brings back memories
I knew the big hits off this album, but I was surprised by the amount of depth there was across the rest. A lot more varied and complex than I would have expected.
5/5. No notes.
Still amazing, almost 20 years later.
Honestly a banger that I’ve liked more and more since it was released.
Excellent
Big fan
Genre: Punk rock Review: One of the earliest pieces of English music I ever listened to was "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" when I was in high school. Since then I must have listened to this album dozens of times, and every time with increasing admiration for the rebellious passion and energy that drove every track. Rating: A clear 10/10
Superb album.
CD
Solid from start to finish.
Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Green Day fan, and I remember finding the songs from this album pretty trite when they came out. But in the context of this album, they become part of a larger whole that ebbs and flows organically. I love the idea of a punk concept album as well.
I was really impressed by this album when it came out. Still am. To me, it's Greed Day's last great album. At the time, I would say that Green Day didn't really make bad albums. But the previous one (Warning) wasn't that well-received by audiences. To me this was proof that Green Day was good at what they did and wouldn't disappoint (later albums changed my view). They took a very different approach to what they had done previously and it worked really well. This is a very cool, unique rock opera. I thought their two multi-part songs (Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming) were excellent and those are the two that really took them outside their comfort zone. Their singles (American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, were also great fun, rocking tunes - good lyrics and good pop punk beats and tempos. They deserved to be big hits. Wake Me Up When September Ends is the one single that I grew tired of (even before it became a single). Non-singles that I was always fond of are St. Jimmy, She's a Rebel, Letterbomb, and Whatsername. Big fan of this album, a mid-2000's classic.
Me twenty years ago: "This album is so overrated." Me now: "I need to add all of these songs to my library."
5/5
Punk grows up and becomes pop. A rocker of an album.
Brilliant
I love the whole album
The quintessential rock opera album. Exceptional.
Ingen bias här inte
Absolute masterpiece of an album. Not as good as Dookie, but damn close. It's funny that this album was just fun pop music to me in 5th grade, but now I can appreciate it as one with genuinely poignant points about life. Favorite track: Give Me Novacaine / She's a Rebel
This has always been a start to finish listen for me. The Broadway show was amazing too. 5/5 every day.
Didn't even have to think about my choice for a second. Instant 5 star album! American Idiot: A great opening and titular track. A classic song that when listened to right is a wonderful protest song, and when listened to wrong becomes a beautiful form of irony. Jesus of Suburbia: While the song doesn't compare to it's inspiration in terms of sound or legacy, it is a damn good song, that even at 9 minutes and 8 seconds long doesn't drag. Holiday: If the fact that this is a protest album hadn't set in yet this track has to make it apparent. Boulevard of Broken Dreams: This track really just speaks for itself. It is one that stands on its own as its single and while I don't mind the message behind the album it is nice to have a less political song. Are We the Waiting: I think this song is super underrated just a nice melodic break in the middle of the punk. St. Jimmy: Good classic punk sound for the first half and more rock opera like at the end. Not my favorite but good. Give Me Novacaine: Also very underrated, I like melodies and I will not apologize for it. I love punk and pop punk but they could benefit from more melodic parts sometimes. She's a Rebel: Not bad just not that special of a song on this good of an album. Extraordinary Girl: This is probably the weakest song on the album, just nothing special about it. Letterbomb: I like this song a lot, but I get why it isn't as popular. Wake Me Up When September Ends: I mean it is the all time classic song. It is just such a damn good song. Though I hate the memes that get made from it and the annoying commenters that "inform" everybody what it is about even though we all already know. Homecoming: This tries to do everything that "Jesus of Suburbia" did, but it just doesn't quite do it as well. It is supposed to be the wrap up to the story and it does have a lot of resolve to it, just not as much of a hitter on its own. Whatsername: Just a nice closing song to a great album! I love Green Day I love this album! Green Day was my first ever concert and I went with my Mom. Will forever be one of my favorite memories! This album is a 5 in so many ways and just never gets old. As a concept album and as a album with great singles it excels. Polyphonic on YouTube has a great video breaking down this album.
This brought me right back to high school days. ALL THE NOSTALGIA! So surprised I hadn't listened to the whole thing before, it would have been (and still is) right up my alley
Oh boy. Bush. Elementary school. If somebody asked me what life was like in 2004-2005 I would simply have them listen to this album. I remember the cynicism of that era well, despite being 9. This album was the coolest, punkest thing I could have imagined at the time. It’s been said that every teenager who heard The Velvet Underground & Nico started a band. The closest thing our generation might have to that is American Idiot. They’re not even my taste particularly but im thinking Green Day has got to be the greatest rock band of my lifetime
BEST GREEN DAY ALBUM
Close to perfect. Clean production, iconic songwriting, sticky melodies, and a strong message. Never overstays its welcome, even on two different 9+ minute songs impressively enough. Realistically one of my top 10 albums of all time.
instant classic
Wake Me Up When September Ends, American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Whatsername
One of my favourite albums of all time.
A modern rock opera without the cringe, probably their best and most cohesive work. Angrily reflecting the hypocritical American rhetoric of the time. A masterpiece.
Hard to believe this is 15 years old. Great listen.
This album feels like the sound of a decade to some degree. Hugely popular at the time and rightly so. It also feels like it’s aged well. 4.5/5
Well, I've already heard this one about 300 times lmao
Well, this is a second time I have to write a review for this album, so in short - it's great. So many hits and singles, and in the context of the record they sound even better than on the radio. It's a really wild ride, and for sure a pleasurable one.
Wonderful
Technically my day one but I lost the account name to that project after that day and decided to ignore that account. But this album is a 5/5 but MCR’s the black parade is the better concept album of the 2000’s and should’ve been on the book.
This album was the soundtrack of my youth. an exhuberant, dread inducing, landmark of the bush era that says no to war, no to isolation, and a send up to the human spirit.
The best rock album of the 2000s and probably ever since. This album defined a generation and spawned hits that stand to this day. It recovered GD’s career while also being so commercially and critically successful, everyone knows where they were when this album was out. The production is perfect with it’s layers of electric guitar tracks and acoustic guitar foundation, the dynamics are strong, the album has movements, a storyline, it is thematic and theatric, and overall just rocks. This will always be my favourite album.
What a great album with an A side that is as good as it gets. Rest of the album falls off a little bit but the overall impression remains great
9/10 shows its age but still really good
10/10. I don't wanna be an American Idiot, and I don't wanna put each song on its own track
A stone cold classic, the best album they ever made and one of the best of the century so far. Another band I saw live, on the tour for their album following this one, and a band who put everything into each show. Was never likely to be less than full marks, but listening again confirmed it as entirely deserving of 5 big 🌟
I am very familiar with Green Day. They were a big part of my formative years with music. The first cassette of theirs I ever owned was Nimrod, and I loved it. After that, I went out and bought Insomniac and Dookie. American Idiot came out when I was in university, and got a lot of air play on both Much Music, as well as the university radio station. There were quite a few singles released off of this record: Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends, American Idiot, and Jesus of Suburbia. The song Holiday reminds me of the movie Accepted every time I hear it. This album is fantastic. 2 songs (Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming) are 9 minutes long each, but there are tempo changes throughout, so really each of them is like 4-5 songs. Overall, I love this band and this album. So great, I listened to it twice. Favourite songs: Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends, American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy Least favourite songs: if forced to pick one, Whatsername 5/5
I unironically think this may be green day's best album. Banger.
Wow blast from the past…this one was fun to listen to as I was unpacking boxes and at my desk. Good upbeat rhythm to keep the energy going. Probably couldn’t listen to while working/reading, but great for doing mindless work.
Consistently good throughout, only one or two songs that aren't absolute bangers.
10/10 would always recommend. i love Green Day, especially this album. it makes me so nostalgic. the fade of Holiday into Boulevard of Broken Dreams is just… chefs kiss.
Awesome stuff
Punk-rock demasiado pop. Venga, un 5 por ser quienes son.
God it’s nice to get an album you’re already familiar with and that you whole-heartedly agree should be on the list.
Bought this when it was released. Loved it, but haven't listened in years. Still a great album, will be back in the regular rotation again.
good stuff!
Love it. Amazing.
Uncertain what this vote scheme really is based on, but God damn if I don't love some American Idiot. Between that and Dookie, I suppose I am a Green Day fan.
What a banger. Nice to revisit it after so much time.
Pretty good. It's one of those "listened to it more than a thousand times" that's how good
Superb
I haven't listened to this album in a very long time. Now, with headphones on, I noticed (or remembered) little things that make the songs really interesting - the aggressive drum fills in the title track, the power chords accenting delicate vocals in Jesus of Suburbia, the vocal harmonies that are effectively integrated into lots of tracks (see here specially the lyrics of Extraordinary Girl). There's also a lot of atmospheric variation across songs but each feels like part of a cohesive imaginary landscape. The transitions between St. Jimmy, Give Me Novocaine, and She's a Rebel are fantastic and reminiscent of a rock opera. I wasn't intending to rate this one so highly but it stands the test of time.
masterpiece
This was pretty amazing. I knew a number of the songs but listening to them in the context of this concept album was a new experience. It so very much captured the Zeitgeist of 2004 as well as predicting where we’ve gone since.
Although I have listened to some Green Day and I am a fan of some of their singles, I have never really made much of an investment in listening to them. I would have never considered that I might like this album. I loved it! I have been missing out!! I am not sure if that translates to other Green Day albums, but welcome "American Idiot"!!
Oh man, am I a sucker for a rock opera. I love American Idiot's scope, structure, variety, and ambition. Equal parts rock and musical theater, this fits right into the pocket of my tastes.
Who thought the first great rock opera of the 21st century would come from Green Day? As I was grappling with the American idiocy of the early 2000s, this album became a soundtrack to disillusionment with a world I was realizing I didn’t understand. I went into my first listen in love with the title track, but one listen to the epic “Jesus of Suburbia” made it clear this album was really special. Green Day was operating on an entirely new level. I love me a great rock opera, and there is comfort knowing that this art form is alive and well. Nearly 20 years later American Idiot remains on my soundtrack to face a fucked up world.
All time classic concept album.
Grande
Amazing concept album
This is their second best album and it’s pretty great. Wish Green Day was still this good. Now they only put out an occasional single that’s alright and you forget about it a week later.
Ah, high school.
This album is so so good! Brought back memories of grad school (I know, I’m old). But, beyond that, it’s just a solid album. Is there even a bad song on it? Hit a whole new level when I saw Billy Joel on Howard Stern talk about WMUWSE being about his dad dying!
Is some of this rating nostalgia? Sure, but there’s lots of actually great songs on here.
Rock legends. Such a knack for melody, and what a phenomenal lyricist.
Album rules. Have always been massive fan of the rock opera setup they did here and still return to this once in a while. The two multi-part songs (Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming) are both amazing.
My definition for a 5 star rating is if I want to listen to an album more than once a week. I've just listened to it twice and will probably listen to it again.
High energy melodic pop punk with depth. The first 5 songs on the album are almost as strong of a start as any album anywhere. Great.
This is an excellent Rock/Punk album. I'm usually not a Punk fan, but have nothing but respect for Green Day. With this album, they outdid themselves. There is no weak track - every song is memorable with great musicianship and hummable melodies. Wake Me Up When September Ends is such a beautiful, powerful song; the real standout on this album. Other highlights include the title song and Boulevard of Broken Dreams, but, this being a concept album, the whole collection warrants repeated listening. However, for the times when you really just want to listen to one particular song, it would have been to let each individual song reside in its own track. I'm not really a fan of lumped together tracks like "Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams". But that is just a minor quibble. 4.5/5
I didn't love this back in high school but I do now. What a killer album
There isn't a bad song on this album. 57 minutes and 23 seconds of greatness.
What I love most about this album is that even though it was released at a time where there was political turmoil in the US due to 9/11 and the Iraq war, it is still 100% relevant today. It’s an album that young people will always relate to, and my generation will always feel nostalgia with. I’m biased because of my nostalgia with this album but it is also a masterclass in pop punk of the 2000s.
This album is absolutely iconic. Album starts strong, small dip in the middle, but finishes strong.
Yeah!
Excellent, strong album from start to finish. My one complaint is that there are too many songs that are combined into a single track. 9/10.
2000 baby heel veel schijven op deze
As someone who has only listened to this album by Green Day, I was ecstatic to see this for today. What a classic album! Takes me back to the 2004 era when I would hear WMUWSE on the radio and on Tv shows. It was a fun ride hearing fave songs and rediscovering the joy that is "Homecoming," what a fun song to listen to. All-in-all, the best album I've listened to so far on this journey. Stand out Songs: American Idiot, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Homecoming.
Oh man. This album takes me back. It's 2003 and my extended family still hangs out in the summers. My uncle demands that someone show him "that broken dreams song." My cousin knows what he means and brings it up on her iPod. I think that's what's so remarkable about American Idiot: its ability to be both universal and personal in scope. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" could be (and is) a song about personal loss, but it's also a song about national loss. Remarkably, this album can comprehensively describe individual feelings without sacrificing the universal commentary. I wouldn't say "Jesus of Suburbia" is the absolute favorite track for me on this album (that award goes to Boulevard of Broken Dreams), but it has what's by far the finest lyrics of the album: "Everyone's heart doesn't beat the same/ it's beating out of time" FUCK, y'all. This album was prophetic. That really cuts to the heart of it, doesn't it? The American way is to disagree on something because you want to make it better...but in your obsession with your OWN truth, you can't respect, let alone understand, another point of view. The divisiveness of American culture has been boiling for a long time, if not forever. If I were rating purely on enjoyability I'd rate this four stars...but I have to give it an extra based on how much of a crucial and influential cultural touchstone it is. Absolutely fucking deserves to be on this list.
AMAZING album!!! I am obsessed I find it such a rollercoaster of emotions, it's very nostalgic but particularly Boulevard of Broken Dreams makes me feel alive haha! Love it so so much and easy 5.
WHAT AN ALBUM. It's a masterpiece. It holds such a place in my heart and I think it's such a great audio-time capsule of that time in musical culture. I remember when it came out I absolutely loved it but as the album got massive success there was a bit of a rejection of it for people who liked Green Day before this album and I think I then started to not like it as much. I then went and owned every single Green Album up to this one and they really are a phenomenal band in my opinion. Looking back at American Idiot as an adult all this time later I still think it's a brilliantly written album. Jesus of Suburbia is excellently put together and hearing something of that scale in this genre was mind-blowing for me, kind of still is.
I cannot rate this album in any way objectively, I basically mainlined it in 2004/5. A classic.
Great early 2000s pop punk. One of the defining albums of that sound.
I’m reluctant to use the terms “Masterpiece” and “Pop Punk” in the same paragraph but here we are. This Pop Punk album falls just short of being a Masterpiece for me because of a slightly drawn out second half, call it a day on When September Ends and it would have even more punch. Still a great work. I’m no fan of the original wave of punk, but this has all the energy and snarling sarcasm but has something to say to me, even across the other side of the Atlantic and nearly 20 years on, it still feels super relevant. Great mix of thumping punk energy and acoustic strummings, clever use of themes and motifs running throughout, just trim 12mins off and it would be even more brilliant.
All time punk classic
Great album!
I have to say, I'm extremely surprised by how much I liked this one. At the time of the album's release I was very dismissive about it: being 14 years old and just getting into heavy metal, I saw this as a lame, mainstream pop-punk album. Listening to it now, I still don't think it's a "real" punk rock album - but I see that as a positive. In particular, the album is far and beyond the very low musical quality and production standards of true punk. I do however appreciate the sentiments of generalized dissatisfaction with society and politics (particularly American, but also globally), which I also didn't share or understand to this degree at the age of 14 - and which are common in "real" punk, but rarely expressed anywhere near this well. Instead of a punk album, I see this as an accessible yet very good alternative rock album, built on the legacy of 80's hard rock concept albums / rock operas and incorporating the best of the (few) good elements of punk. 18 years after its release, I'm glad I re-listened this album and learned to appreciate it. Will definitely revisit. 4.5 stars.
Absolute great album, lyrics, music and singing still great and poignant almost twenty years later
Great Album, amazing band. 5/5
A+
I can’t believe I never heard it in full. Amazing
One of my favorite albums from my high school days. The 9 minute epics of Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming will forever be my favorites.
this is the album that got me into music, therefore my favorite of all time.
Tried Green Day before, didn't like it, but I guess today I was into it.
I love Boulevard of Broken dreams ... Idk why I love it so much but it's beautiful. The rest of the album is good but it's a 5 for the one song.
Love this green day album!
Incredible rock opera. I always admire this album for still being extremely good even if you don't pay attention to the plot - the songs are all great when isolated, something I, a Pink Floyd fanboy, can't even say about The Wall (let's be honest, nobody is putting "Bring The Boys Back Home" in their playlists). Punk doesn't get better than this from what I've heard, easy 5/5.
Banger
So good top to bottom. Jesus of Suburbia is an all time anthem. Some hugely identifiable guitar riffs throughout the entire thing
Absolute CLASSIC. Like, wow. A lot of these songs hold up so well, they capture the epic emotions and paradoxically small scale of the suburbs. Beautiful!
Where to start? I got into Green Day back in '02, when I was 19. I played the shit out of International Superhits! When American Idiot dropped I had just seen Green Day headline Leeds festival (my first festival and Green experience) so to say I was in the height of my fanboy phase is an understatement. I remember watching the American Idiot music video weeks before and no joke, every single damn one of my friends owned this album. The end of 2004 and going into 2005 was a great time in my life and this album was the soundtrack. It was everywhere I went. House parties? Gaming with friends? While I was at work? This album was on constant rotation by me and everyone I hung out with. It was huge. It was my favourite Green Day album for the longest time but I rarely listen to it now. I have listened to it so many times that I kinda ruined it for myself. It will always be a 5* album for me though. The one song I can still happily revisit is Jesus of Suburbia. That song has everything. The other highlights for me are American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Homecoming. Pretty much the whole album.
A pretty perfect rock album, not a bad song on there. Verges on operatic in composition. St Jimmy, Give Me Novocaine, Homecoming, Whatsername all great but Jesus of Suburbia is the obvious classic - punk Bohemian Rhapsody
Fantastic. One of the first CDs I ever bought, and it still holds up.
I'd written Green Day off as a one album wonder before this came out...... but this was a ferocious return to form
Going into this, I thought there was no way American Idiot could rate as high as Dookie. I was wrong. This was the annoyingly catchy popular sellout album for a reason: The music was annoyingly great, and everybody knew it.
Absolutely fantastic shit that I ignored for so long just because I hated how beloved it was in middle school or whatever
Def some nostalgia here
Obwohl teilweise gestückelt passt alles wunderbar zusammen. Man merkt ein klares Konzept. Fett Fett fett. In jeder Nummer gibt's an geilen Höhepunkt.
Great album, worth it's accolades.
Jebiga to je komedija i tragedija, to je Sv. Ivica i to je moje ime... AND DON'T YOU FUCKING WEAR IT OUT.
Good music, good lyrics, brought me back to my high school years
I can't even begin to quantify how much of a soft spot I have for this album. It came out when I was a kid, and was the first rock music I got REALLY into at the time, having listened to contemporary country up until then. Easy 5/5, but I'm biased as hell to the point where I'm not gonna bother trying to explain why I feel that way. I did actively relisten to the album for this, but I seriously considered just skipping it because I have literally every song on it already in my usual playlist. If you want a nuanced opinion ask literally anyone else.
Very nostalgic. Loved this album growing up
Awesome classic
Green Day's masterpiece. What a perfect pop-punk album. Every song flows together nice and moves into the next one. It's one of the few 21st century albums that really engages you from song to song and is best listened to in its entirety. What a fantastic album from one of my all-time favorite bands. Listening to this when I was in my youth during the Kerplunk! days would have been slightly disappointing, but now that I've grown up, I can really appreciate American Idiot for what it is: perfect for its time and genre. Nice work, Green Day!
This album has been in regular rotation for me since it was released. As much as Dookie was incredibly influential for the pop-punk scene and the band continued to evolve their sound on Insomniac and Nimrod - it wasn’t until American Idiot that they really cemented their legacy as a Hall of Fame band. Haven’t been as big of a fan of anything since but still love the classics. This album tells a story and does so in a way that’s never boring. Would love to see the musical (or a film adaptation) some day. Fav Tracks: “Jesus of Suburbia” “Letterbomb” “Homecoming”
Know this one great. Good one.
Whew, American Idiot is an absolute classic in my eyes. The entire album is filled with commentary on the political and disenfranchised state of the USA in the early/mid 00s, and although the album is almost 20 years old, sadly it still speaks to the state of USA. This conceptual album is multi Grammy award winning, has been adapted for Broadway and has a documentary that was filmed about the process of making the album. This takes me back to early high school blasting this in my headphones on my discman, and to what we now know as a much simpler time considering what the Trump Administration has brought to the world. Best: American Idiot; Boulevard of Broken Dreams; Wake Me Up When September Ends Worst: Are We the Waiting Note: Spotify has joined some songs as one, which I can see why they've done it for the flow, but I have always listened to them as separate songs. (Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams; Are we The Waiting/St. Jimmy, and a couple of others)
That's my childhood, no way I could not love it
banger
I know all the songs in this album by heart! I used to listen to it when I was an awkward teenager, so it will always be special to me. Favourite track: Jesus of Suburbia but honestly I like them all
I don't want to be an American idiot.
Nostalgia. Letterbomb and Homecoming don't really stand out but the rest are really great. A must.
perfeito clássico!
Grew up listening to Green Day, needed to be a 5
Riley says 5 stars and I agree. I have a soft spot in my heart for pop punk and Green Day does it better than anyone. Jesus of Suburbia is like a microcosm of the whole album, a tiny pop punk rock opera all on its own. Even if you don’t love them, you have to appreciate the ambition here.
Perhaps I’m just rating it highly because I lived in the East Bay for so long, but this album seriously holds up after 17 years. A punk rock opera was genius then and is genius now
Been touring this album for 15+ years and that's alright. Good stuff.
Nostalgic bliss
I've had heard the hits, but never the full album. Every song is good or a masterpiece, it's a very solid album.
Rating: 10/10 Best songs: all
Still one of the best concerts I ever saw was their American Idiot tour. I also still know most of the lyrics as I listened along. Jesus of Suburbia is still a classic and forever will be.
Still awesome!
Absolutely fantastic album that is a highlight of Green Day’s career. I love so much of this album and have for as long as I can remember.
Great piece of American music.
Very very awesome Album!!!
То есть встали рядом с Metallica, The Beatles, AC/DC, Aerosmith и Van Halen, отчего я немного негодовал.
One of the legendary Rock Opera's of our time. Right up there with Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Great album. Career defining. Good guitars, beats, melodies!, sensicle lyrics.
This hasn't aged well but it still takes me back to chugging too many drinks at house parties and jumping off of the roofs of various neighbours
"No one ever died for my Sins in hell As far as I can tell At least the ones that I got away with" (Jesus of Suburbia) "Cigarettes and ramen and a little bag of dope I am the son of a bitch and Edgar Allan Poe Raised in the city under a halo of lights The product of war and fear that we've been victimized I'm the patron saint of the denial With an angel face and a taste for suicidal" (St. Jimmy) A Green Day sí le permito hacer canciones de más de cinco minutos.
Wow this album unlocked childhood memories I forgot existed. Was a little nervous that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered, but oh my god am I so glad I was wrong. That rocked hard as hell, its got a political message that still rings true today, was a total risk by a band way outside of their comfort zone thematically, and still was an incredible success. We've had a lot of concept albums lately and I haven't been the biggest fan, but yo this is how its done right. Also, who else was a 5th grader who didn't really know anything about politics but didn't like George Bush just because of Green Day? Any ways, this group just earned its pop-punk merit badge because its 5s across the board for Green Day!
Not surprised that this ended up on the list. Jam-packed with hits, somehow polished and pop while maintaining the raw edge.
Américan idio, Jesús suburbio y boulevard broken dreamS
YEESSSSSSSSS
more timely than ever!
Superb.
Solid album that represents Green day maturity. I just don't get the double songs per album track.
Punk Opera about the disillusionment of growing up in suburbia? Easy 5 stars. I listened to this album so hard the summer it came out that I spent the next 3 years hating on it. Once I went back and realized I had just overplayed it for myself, it went back into a moderated heavy rotation.
stone cold classic.
Energetic, one of my favourite albums then I was a teenager.
Can't not give it a 5
Great. Recognize lots of songs.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I definitely bought this album on the day it came out - I was 16. I was riding in the back seat of my friend's car listening to "Holiday" - we had it cranked and he was driving too fast trying to take a turn off 18th Ave - into the ditch we went! A fond memory. I get why some people don't like Green Day but they were such a big part of my formative years and I come back to their music often enough. I think this is their best album. "Jesus of Suburbia" is epic, I love that song. Rounding up to a 5.
Epic!
idiota americando da minha juventude idiota
Absolute classic.
Probably my best Green Day album as well. Loved the first one but this one is just really good.
One of the albums I listen to often, very good.
Was very excited to see this bad boy pop up. This was the album that introduced me to Green Day but I haven’t listened in forever. Very rewarding for us lyrics listeners ;) Kathleen Hanna should’ve sang Letterbomb though.
One of my favorites, a great commentary and timeless rock sounds to bang your head along with.
Hands down the best Green Day album of all time, one of the best concept albums of all time, and one of the best albums in general. 5 stars, all killer-no filler.
I've enjoyed this album since teenagehood. Listening again, I've definitely grown in my tastes but it still is a nice listen.
Aguante Jesus of Suburbia vieja. Sape
Very high energy for sure.
Something familiar with enough unknown tracks to keep me interested throughout. This is the most thought I have given to the band to this point so reading about the journey that led to this album was very engaging. The theft of the masters, the band being on the brink of splitting and coming together to focus their attention on a punk rock political opera is quite a ride. I'm not into opera's or musicals due to my own limitations but I wasn't even aware there was a grander story being told here before now. I think the music works really well, they lean hard into those big booming sounds from the drums and bass guitar and it creates a lot of Anthemic sounding moments which is easy to listen to. Vocals are hard to parse on their own just due to how much ive heard it growing up but its got a hard punky edge when it needs to and doesn't bother me. I'd be happy to have most any song come up in a random playlist without skipping although some of the longer tracks can begin to overstay their welcome on repeat listens.
4.5
Super nostalgic, great album.
Favorite songs: American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting, Extraordinary Girl, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Homecoming, Whatsername
Didn't like the notes too metal, also didn't understood much might visit latee
*American Idiot* is a rock opera. It’s a band from the later era of punk—or at least the songs have a wonderfully punk sound. It makes for a great listen, provided you’re in the right mood or willing to get into it. It might not be the ideal choice for waking up first thing in the morning, though. Still, after the first listen, I’m giving it 4 points.
Know this
I don’t like Green Day. I never have. I’ve given them plenty of chances over the years, but their sound just isn’t for me. There are a few exceptions, though. I was 14 in 2004 when American Idiot came out, and it was everywhere. At school, my classmates would play it between classes. Every “skater boy” (shouts out to Avril!) with a guitar would try to cover songs from the album during lunch. I say “try” because they sounded terrible—but their enthusiasm was genuine, and all the girls would swoon over their attempts at Wake Me Up When September Ends. Songs like Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams were on constant rotation everywhere my friends and I went. It was impossible to escape American Idiot. Because of that, I ended up growing attached to several of its songs. Despite my overall dislike of Green Day, there’s no denying this album has some genuinely great moments. More than anything, though, American Idiot is tied to some wonderful memories of my teenage years. It’ll always have a special place in my heart.
I have listened to most of these songs many many times before, but never approached the whole album. I was surprised to find such a cohesive and enjoyable record. Green day were inescapable in this period and for good reasons
Hittiä hitin perään. Sama energia koko albumin ajan. Biisit sulautuu kivasti yhteen, mutta on kuitenki erilaisia. Very nice.
I really enjoyed this. Was never really into them when this came out but due to people in work have listened to their latest album and liked that so when this showed up was interested in listening and it didn’t disappoint.
Not been a fan of Green Day (which is to say they’re a band that just simply passed me by - see also Foo Fighters). But this was bouncy and brash, and the production was clean. Liked.
This is a good album, I just don't love it enough to give it the full 5 stars.
Love this album, suited the times. Great live group tpp
woah woah you cant say that buddy
Classic
So the hits are there for sure. The songs in between though, are just ok.
Wish I was alive when this album was still hype, maybe then I’d enjoy it.
I knew the singles but was surprised by the big 9 minute songs. I liked it all though.
Green Day is awesome - I love the punk influence. I would give a 4.5 if I could. This album is a repeater for me - so fun!
