American Idiot, a quasi topical political issue in the year 2025! In other words, at least for some typical American ideas.

I like this album. I’ve never listened to the whole thing before but am familiar with almost all the songs. Less energy than their first album but right up there with that one because of the more complex transitions and concepts. Didn’t realize that it was a concept album

Just raw fucking awesome album. I forgot how much I love this album. The stuff I didn't recall is how they just break from the hard shit into piano and shit and slow it down and mix it up. Jesus of Suburbia is just awesome. I forgot all about that song. I know a lot of this album but was psyched to listen to the shit i've never heard a lot like Jesus of Suburbia, Are We the Waiting (awesome song). Jimmy. Jimmy - jesus my hand got tired listening to it with all those downstrokes lmao - reminded me of some older Ramones stuff - awesome. Incredible chord changes - just awesome. Enjoyed almost every song on this album. I think Novacaine was probably the only one that was a bit meh - but even that was fine. Letterbomb is awesome, never heard that. Favorites are probably Jesus and September but honestly, this is another one of the very few albums I can listen to start to finish without any issues. Awesome album!

I loved this album so much! I’ve listened to Green Day a lot growing up, but for some reason never listened to this entire album. So many new songs have been added to my liked songs. This was an easy listen through and through and honestly just a classic.

Incredible album with a somewhat relevant theme again. Love the pissed off undertones towards a government controlled by propaganda (regardless of what side you align with). The music is incredible, the lyrics are incredible, just a perfect punk rock album. I saw that this was their sixth album which was a big surprise to me and I’m not sure much of their earlier stuff was popular but this broke through and is rightfully regarded as one of the best rock albums from the 2000s. Favorite songs were AI, Jesus of Suburbia, and When September Ends, but there is no skips on this album.

imagine being 17 in 2004 and hearing holiday into boulevard for the first time, calling your parents American Idiots, deciding to be a rebel and be dangerous, and rocking out. What an album.

One of the first albums I ever loved, and I therefore must give it a 5

This album came out when I was eight years old. I wasn't really paying much attention to...what was going on in the world at the time. Sure, I had a basic idea, but my main focus (as a child) was, you know, on making it through elementary school! Now, though? I'm nearing 30. I'm in the US. This album is so damn relevant it's ridiculous. On a musical note, I prefer this over Dookie - I'm a big fan of long-ass rock songs, so I get the complaints from some people, but for me, this is a solid record and still one of my favorites in Green Day's discography.

Literally magnum opus

Nostalgic. Bangers. I liked the songs that weren’t hits too.

Nostalgia! I was way too young to see the musical on Broadway for my birthday in 2010

Is now a good time to mention how Johnny Test stole American Idiot for its theme song?

For my money, American Idiot stands as one of the major rock-as-art achievements of all time. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-american-idiot-by-green?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Great album. I remember when it came out. Still holds up

Very good

This was an album that i knew about. Truly awesome

While being very of the time, it still feels fresh. A nostalgic and solid concept album

Absolutely killer punk rock/alt rock blended album. I couldn't even come up with what my favorite song. Killer album.

This album singlehandedly changed my music taste thank you for your service

Such a good album. Was good in 2004 and is still good in 2025.

Brilliant

im the son of rage and love!!!

Classic turn of the century punk rock.

As one of the few fans of Warning I had dropped off the Green Day train in the interim and never really listened to this one. I need to spend some time with the lyric sheet, I’m not sure what makes it an “opera” just yet. But I dug it.

Fitting that I’m listening to this on Trumps Inauguration Day. We really are a bunch of idiots putting that clown back in office. Great album!

I am a different human without this album. Good songs on it too

This is a classic punk album that really captured a generation.

I have never been too fussed by green Day but I was wrong. My son loves a couple of their songs. This is a brilliant album, all of it.

Masterpiece

Good!!!

Super Album!

Grøn dag får en instant fucking 10/5

246/1001

Absolutely incredible. One of my favorite albums of all time. St. Jimmy!!!!

Loved this album - had just moved to Guernsey and listened to it on my 30 min walk in/ back from work. Still rocks.

This one's definitely influenced by nostalgia but I don't even care. Soundtrack to my high school years! I've always really liked Green Day, so even without the nostalgia factor this probably would have gotten a high rating. Solid sound and instrumentals throughout, and the songs are thoroughly entertaining. There isn't really a dud in the bunch.

Absolute banger, no weak songs. There's probably some component of bias due to nostalgia, but I think if I hadn't heard this and listened for the first time I would still think it rocks. Favorite songs were: 2. Jesus of Suburbia 3. Holiday 13. Whatsername 10/10

The day has finally come! When Stijn and I started this project I said that if this album wasn't on here then the entire list was junk. I am happy to report that the list has now been validated! The first concert I ever went to was Green Day on the American Idiot tour in Mullins Arena at UMass. Thinking back, it was cool as hell that Green Day went out to Western Mass to play a show because almost nobody does that. I think I was in the 4th grade. I remember that I had to actually save up to pay for the ticket myself. My friend's dad got us the tickets and when I went to pay him back with literal rolls of quarters I had saved, he told me he didn't want to carry those around and therefore I got the ticket for free, which was super rad. My pants were falling down all night with the rolls of quarters in my pockets and I was on cloud 9. That was a peak childhood experience and everything about that and this album made me the person I am today. Needless to say I fucking LOVE this album. I have listened to it actual hundreds of times. I can still picture my friend's mom's handwriting on the burned CD she gave me of it. I stream it now, but the feeling never changes. It is quite literally perfect. The songs are all amazing and flow together perfectly. If I was being sent to a desert island for the rest of my life and could only take one album, it would be this. No hesitation. I might even take just half of this album over any other album. I still listen to it all the way through probably once a month, minimum. I hope that never changes. Green Day, thank you for existing and creating this masterful work of art.

This is an instant 10/10 for me. "American Idiot" and "The Black Parade" are the two defining albums of my childhood. It was the first CD I ever owned and I listened to it constantly. I could go ten years without listening to it and still know every word. This album was an on-ramp not only to Green Day's older and punkier albums, but the entire world of punk music in general. My parent's friend, Kevin Meeten, heard that I was obsessed with Green Day and showed up at my house with their entire discography burned onto CDs, album covers printed out in low resolution and put inside cheap plastic CD cases. I'm not sure I even knew they had other albums prior to that moment, but they quickly became valuable currency among my friends. I would bring them around to the many houses and we'd listen to them, our minds being blown by "Dookie" and "Nimrod". This was my first introduction to music snobbery, and I was the culprit. Oh, you've only listened to American Idiot? I love basically every song on this album. I went through phases with it, each section of the album becoming my favorite for a few months at a time. I'd listen to just the first four songs on repeat, then get bored of them and realize the next four were just as good. At this point in time, I think "Homecoming" and "Whatshername" are my favorite songs. The live album of the American Idiot Tour, "Bullet In A Bible", came with a concert DVD that shared equal time inside my DVD Player with "Return of the King". I watched it on repeat and put so much pressure on my parents that I went to Green Day as my first concert a year later. It rocked. This isn't Green Day's best album, but it is definitely their most important album for me. The political angles of the album may have influenced me a lot, and unfortunately ring just as true twenty years later. I have no complaints about this album whatsoever. It fucking rocks, it changed music for me. 10/10

A scathing indictment of suburban America and its culture/belief system under the Bush administration. Also at times a beautiful display of the different ways those suburban kids/families struggle to reckon with personal tragedy. A great juxtaposition of power chords and sad but catchy melodies. It’s undeniably a 5, a good snapshot in time for a subset of Americans

For some reason I've always felt like Green Day was over-hyped. Perhaps it was influence from friends in the 90s who thought that they were "fake punk" or "sold out" or whatever. I've enjoyed their songs throughout the years. The mainstream success of American Idiot made it something that I avoided checking out. Listening to it today, I was struck by how many of these songs I've heard before. They go well together. I'm not really sure about the story of this concept album, but I enjoy the theme and feeling. This really is a great album.

Love this album It’s almost a five It’s really a 9/10 but in this case I’m rounding UP TO 5.

This was THE album that got me into rock music about 20 years ago now (Christ that makes me feel old) so I’m hardly going to be objective here, but I’ll try There are a few songs in the middle that drag slightly - Are We The Waiting, She’s a Rebel and Extraordinary Girl are all a bit bland, and Homecoming towards the end is very unfocused and feels like a load of unfinished songs slapped together rather than a larger conceptual piece. American Idiot is a concept album and is kind of political but the lyrics are often very vague and it’s difficult to tell exactly what the political stance is, especially when it gets watered down by the central doomed lovers storyline Criticism out of the way - I absolutely love it. The title track is a pure injection of energy and fire with one of the most iconic and pounding drum parts of all time. Jesus of Suburbia is even greater than the sum of its parts, a rock opera epic with so many memorable motifs. Holiday and St Jimmy are both incredibly fun, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Give Me Novocaine are massive and gorgeous ballads, and Letterbomb is a blast of pop punk greatness with one of Green Day’s most underrated choruses. Wake Me Up is probably their most personal song and (while a bit overplayed) is so emotional and powerful when it hits, and Whatsername is a beautifully nostalgic closer with a heartstopping bridge. It’s a stunning project that blends stadium rock songwriting with pop-punk spirit and musical theatre ambition, and a complete reinvention of Green Day’s sound that led to them one of the biggest bands in the world, and my favourite band for a very very long time. I loved music for as long as I can remember but this in particular captured my heart when I was about 9 years old and opened my eyes as to what music could achieve, sonically and narratively, and what an album could be rather than just a collection of songs, and I immediately began devouring album after album until my brain melted and I signed up to listen to 1001 of the stupid things. No word of a lie, I don’t think I would have studied music at university without American Idiot, I don’t think I would have been friends with a lot of my closest pals growing up without American Idiot, and I would absolutely not be the person I am today without American Idiot. 3 stars.

Simply a really good emo band. Sure, Green Day's overplayed, but "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is loads better than whatever-the-hell My Chemical Romance came up with around that time. The tone shift b/w "Holiday" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is f**king epic. I need to listen to the band more.

One of the better 21st century albums

Super nostalgic for me and I think that's why I'm rating it higher. This was a really important album in my adolescence and listening to it today transported me right back.

amazing album

18 months ago I gave Dookie a semi-reluctant 5 stars (well, 4.5 stars rounded up) partially because of those classic early singles but partially because I felt it was the Green Day album I *should* rate the highest. Yes, I’d rather listen to American Idiot front-to-back, but that’s just nostalgia for an album than came out when I was 14, right? Surely the debut album, before they starting ‘selling out’, had to be objectively more authentic and better…? Since then I’ve done some reflecting, and also had the pleasure of seeing the band perform both albums live in full, and I can confidently say that American Idiot is, in fact, their masterpiece. For starters, it’s a concept album in a strong sense - it’s musically and thematically linked, with some excellent transitions between tracks, which I always appreciate. Ok, I’ve never been sure *exactly* what the narrative is supposed to be, but that doesn’t matter - the music tells a story on its own. It’s ambitious and cinematic but it never comes across as pretentious to me, as at its core it’s still using the same basic ingredients of punk-rock chords and pop melodies, just served in a different way. 20 years on it still sounds great to me.

Green Day really proved they hadn't lost a step when this came out. Sometimes anger and depression can make great art.

I mean, what's to say, one of my favourite albums growing up, and every bit of this holds up.

An album with an overarching storyline? What a concept.

This showed up as my album today, and I immediately went back to my teenage years - so of course I was worried I'd be biased, that nostalgia would play its part in my review. Therefore I tried my best to go into this critically, listening as though for the first time. And you know what? It still rules. When it first came out, I didn't bother listening to it because I though "oh, this is the Wake Me Up When September Ends album, I don't wanna listen to those emos", but I think Green Day have always released maudlin singles off of bangers of albums, which really don't give you an impression of what the rest of the album is like. It's a worrying state of affairs that so much of the societal points that Green Day rally against are no better - or possibly even worse - today, and their lyrics still hit hard now. Also, how is this twenty years old?? Faves: Homecoming, Letterbomb, American Idiot

Personally, I'm more of a dookie guy. But c'mon, it's american idiot. 5/5

It was all over the screen

I loved Dookie, but then sort looked down on Green Day as "sellouts" (due mostly to the success of "Good Riddance") until this album came out. It really softened my perception of the band. It's a fantastic rock opera, and is enjoyable from end to end.

5 Stars. And so appropriate. The fascist circus is back in town. God Bless Green Day!

I Don't Care What Any RYM Using Fantano Loving /Mu/ Denizen Says

Yo what a fantastic piece of art this is. I can't believe I never listened to the whole thing until now. Teenage me would have loved it.

This was a seminal album for me in my teenage years and brought back a lot of good memories. It still holds up well in my opinion, with a great mix of high energy punk tracks and slower ballads. I love how ambitious it is with the rock opera meta-story but most tracks hold up well on their own as well. St Jimmy and Holiday were my favorite tracks as a kid and upon revisiting the album I've learned that I had great taste.

Iconic riffs and lyrics. Topical when it came out, but unfortunately remains culturally relevant 20 years later. Extremely ambitious, but is everything it should be. I'm a sucker for a good concept album anyway. Not to mention six songs over 5min is pretty amazing for a "punk" band.

I professed to hate this album when it came out, because I believed the rhetoric that Green Day had sold out. I took me revisiting Green Day's discog in my 30's to realize that the rhetoric was wrong and so was I. This album is excellent, there's not a bad song on it, and it represents the authentic growth (that perhaps took my own growth as a person to fully realize) of a band that is among my favorites, if not my favorite.

How can I rate this down? :D It's impossible for me to be objective about it as it brings me back to my teenage years haha. It opens with American Idiot which is such an energy blast! The whole album has a great punchy, light punky vibe that I feel is a crowd pleaser in general, not just for me.

A great album. I had forgotten what's on it. The starter alone is great. Holiday/Boulevard of brolen Dreams is one of my favorites. And I always enjoy listening to 'Wake me up, when September ends'. Full marks. 5/5

Haha this can’t be a coincidence. Americans are great at self implosion, fuck Trump.

Incredible album and so nostalgic. Jesus of Duburbia is one of my favourite songs of all time along with Give Me Novocaine. One of the best albums, one of my most loved.

I didn't need to listen to rate this as I've played this album a thousand times! I'm a Green Day fan anyway and saw them live at the Emirates Stadium London a few years ago. Billy Joe Armstrong has such a great and distinctive voice and the superb material and brilliant production all together make this one of the greatest albums you will ever hear. In their own words this is a Punk Rock Opera mainly telling the story of Jesus of Suburbia an adolescent anti hero. This album gets a 5 from me

I really think that this is Green Day's best. Songs are WAY too long, like to the point that it's basically the antithesis of punk music, but damn if this whole album isn't good. This was Green Day's peak, and they have only gotten worse.

Great punk-pop all the way through

Easy 5. Iconic album that I have not heard in a while! It's political without being annoying, it rocks hard and it's an ambitious concept. I can't say I was able to follow the story. Amazingly it was also full of hits I remember being played at middle school dances! Not sure that will ever happen again.

I still love it. Particularly like Boulevard and Wake Me Up, they always give me that sort of introspective, bittersweet feeling where you think about how time is passing so quickly and you dwell on mistakes you have made.

This album is one of my favorites. Its title track got me into rock music. But that’s only part of the reason I’m giving it a high rating. It’s also because I love the story and the style. 5/5

Got this just 2 days after the 20 year anniversary edition was released, which I was planning to listen to anyway. I was 21 when this album came out and I didn’t care for it. I discovered it properly this year, and now I think it’s one of my favorite albums ever. One hour that flows so well is quite rare. And I got to hear it played live in its entirety just a few months ago!

Un tour de force: chaque pièce est un hit. Rarement le punk rock et le pop ont fait aussi bon ménage, et la revendication sociale ne boude pas son plaisir musical

Dookie will always be my favorite, but they really took their careers to the next level am with this album.

Fucking fuego. As good as I remember

Green Day’s American Idiot is an outstanding album, blending fast-paced punk, anthemic rock, and multi-part tracks that venture into almost progressive territory. Although I’ve typically found Green Day to be “okay” at best, this album stands out as one of my favorites. The instrument mix is solid, with guitars and bass doing their job well, but Trè Cool’s drumming is on a whole other level. While there’s a slight dip in quality between Give Me Novacaine and Letterbomb, the album still holds up as a classic. The hardest part of reviewing this album is resisting the urge to sing along. I wish I could have experienced one of the concerts where they played it in full. Standout track: Homecoming. Score: 5/5.

Better than I remembered

Whilst I don’t think this is their best album, it is still a great album. Like a lot of people I’d imagine, wake me up when September ends is one of my favourite Green Day songs.

Amazing album. My love of it may be influenced by Beat Saber

Hadn't listened to this for years and had forgotten what a good album it was.

This album has aged so incredibly well. Prescient as hell. As a friend put it: where is all the good political rock these days?

Nostalgic. Brilliant album, reminds me of year 8

Banger 10/10

Ya estoy despierto

One of my favourite albums in high school and still continues to be. Not a bad song on the entire album. Seeing it played in its entirely live was perfection and one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. My first rock concert at 14 was in support of this in 04’, this album essentially got me into concerts. What an easy 5 star.

almost painfully nostalgic for me, listened to this a lot at a very formative period of my life (discovered wanking)

Very good album. 10/10

This is a classic. Too many banging tunes. Stadium anthems mixed with songs that Green Day is not just straight up punk-rock. I could scream the lyrics to the title track while playing it on the guitar until I die. Truly flawless album. Extraordinary.

This album slaps. Time has not left this behind

Too many timeless bangers and too much nostalgia to be anything but a 5

5/5 zeer enjoyable

Definitely biased with growing up with this album but it still rocks. Jesus of suburbia’s a top 10 song for me, the rest of the album is full of classics

A perfect pop punk rock opera inspired by the who and the jam that's still relevant in the trump era.

The high water mark for Green Day and another album I’ve listened to constantly since its release.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time and was probably the most excited I’ve been for an album listen thus far in our project. In my third year of college, something happened to my computer and my iTunes library got wiped. I borrowed this CD and uploaded it to my iTunes and for longer than I’d like to admit, it was the only music on my computer. I’d love to see the iTunes stats for how many times I listened to it… I added all but the last track to my 1001 albums faves playlist (even more than Taylor Swift - I left two tracks from 1989 off!). Easy 5.

This was wonderful. It seems like the type of album where if it had come out when I was in high school I would have known every lick and every word. They’re kinda like the Foo Fighters, both hard rock bands with great melodic songs. Hard to believe this is 20 years old. Was familiar with it from back then, but it was great to listen to again, and I’m excited for the 20th anniversary deluxe edition next month. Elizabeth liked it as well.

You wouldn’t expect it to be as phenomenal as it is. There isn’t really a bad song on it or anything I’d skip over. The hits are good and so are the deep cuts, especially Give Me Novacaine. I think anyone who thinks Green Day are hacks should at least give this a try.

Die overgang van holiday naar boulevard of broken dreams was ziek episch Uhh ja man

very good, reminds me of teenage years

Always been a fan of Green Day and heard many of these songs, but think that was my first full listen thru the album

When i was 16 this was the bible

Love pop punk, but was never a massive Green Day fan and kind of thought their newer stuff was a little lame. After listening to this one, I think my only major gripe is how overplayed so much of this album was growing up, and how everything on this album sounds like it’s trying to be an anthem. But the songs are great and I love the double song, Rock opera thing. Had never heard Are We The Waiting / St Jimmy - liked that one in addition to some of the singles.

trop bien

Brilliantly made album

I have vague memories of seeing promotions for this album when it was coming out. ( I was really young at the time) I’m definitely aware of the hits this album after hearing them on the radio for years, specifically Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Gotta say though after hearing the whole album for once, I really dig this one. Punk rock isn’t really my favorite rock genre (though at this point calling Green Day punk rock feels weird. Honestly I feel more inclined to think of Bad Religion or the Dead Kennedys and even that feels surface level) but this album has a great balance between punk and modern rock. I have a soft spot for the hits, but I also really liked some of the lesser know tracks like Give Me Novacaine and Letterbomb. The 9-minute songs were pretty good, not my favorites though. But overall, this was really good. Favorite Song: Wake Me Up When September Ends Other hits: American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Give Me Novacaine, She’s A Rebel, Letterbomb

Perfect hip hop magic. 5

Been listening for decades. 5/5

I’m not a huge Green Day fan, but I am a sucker for over-the-top pop-punk rock-operas, so this was preettty delightful.

An hour of high octane joy

I love this of course! Most songs on this album sound kind of the same, but I love the sound. I could listen to 2000s punk/pop punk all day.

One of my absolut favorit albums ! Hart to pin out favorit numbers - but Boulevard of broken dreams, When september ends and Holiday always gets to me :)

Album shows up, kicks in the door and throws 'American Idiot' in your face and then we are off. American Idiot is my favorite Green Day album. I also really like Dookie, but for me American Idiot just hit different. I understand that those two are switched for a lot of people, but I find that Dookie deal a lot more with the personal, where American Idiot really hits it home with the heavy overtones of critique of the system, the government and society as a whole and really voices the feelings of a generation of disillusionment in the wake of 9/11. The punk-rock/punk-pop sound that Green Day had previously developed on celebrated albums like Dookie just hits extra on the spot when used to approach this subject from this angle. And while the album did serve as a voice of a generation it is still as relevant and applicable today as it was when it was released - just for slightly different reasons Standouts American Idiot Holiday Boulevard of Broken Dreams 5/5

Disappointed this wasn’t my 100th milestone album but nevertheless, always happy to get an easy, instant 5-star one on the list. Top notch, even with the overplayed title track

This album will always be a 5/5 for me :)

A return to form for Green Day

Trying not to be bias, but this is a fucking incredible album, just so so good. All the double songs. UGH

I don’t know why I’ve largely ignored Green Day. Maybe it’s because they got so much airplay that I didn’t feel the need to listen to the whole album. My loss.

St. Jimmy is the best pop punk song since The Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen In Love." Fight me. Big anthemic songs. Flawless execution, hard guitars, Green Day made a big rock album in an era when that just wasn't happening. A great sounding recording. A favorite and still meaningful. Somewhat sad and cynical - is all hope gone in modern America? How do we feel about it?

An album that helped define my childhood.

I forgot how good Jesus of Suburbia is

this album has a lot of bangers doesn't it? billie joe armstrong looks like if you caught a human in the middle of their transformation into robert smith.

The timing of this appearing on my list is incredible. A day after the assassination attempt on Trump it's here. Not a more appropriate song than the title track for the way things are, and this was a 20 year old song. It has happened with Rage and now again here. A song comes and clearly points out a wrong in the world and it gains relevancy even more later on. Can we not fix this stuff?! We need honesty and settled facts in our information streams. Not agendas and propaganda. Rant over. The rest of the album is also really good. A mix of story telling and emotions that show Green Day's roots and evolution. Several mainstay radio tracks that have stood the rest of time, and that makes me feel ancient.... In some ways it really helped deal with the absurdity of this weekend. It sucks a song like this can be relevant still 20 years later, but that also may give some hope that if it was bad then, we can hopefully make it another 20? Copium? Anyways, wake me up when November ends... Favorite track "American Idiot" just because of the timing. 5/5

Classic and solid start to finish.

I can say without doubt or hesitation that this is one of the greatest rock albums of the 21st century. Their best album.

This was the first album I ever bought, and I was obsessed with it as an 11 year old. I could still sing every word of it. If I heard it for the first time today I probably wouldn't score it like this but nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Love the wall of guitars.

Surprisingly rich for these guys.

one of green days greatest albums

Very anthemic, a classic

Probably one of the best albums of the 2000s. I've heard a lot during my life about how a true Punk should behave. I heard a lot about how a real Punk should act, what kind of sound he should play, how to play and where to play. But for me, the true identity of Punk is just one: Not to fear! And Green Day is a band that never feared the kind of evil that said Punk shouldn't be pop or conceptual. Because Punk was never afraid of being pop. Punk was never afraid of anything!

Holy shit I fucking love this album. It’s a powerhouse from start to finish. Incredibly insightful, unique, and original writing. Not a single skip or weak track on the whole record. Green Days best work. 5/5

This is one of those albums that's wormed its way so deeply into my heart and soul that I can't even think of anything to say about it. I mean, is it mixed like a brick? Sure, but I hardly even notice. I just throw on "Jesus Of Suburbia" and I'm, like... Still in awe of it. Top three Green Day album, for damn sure. Goodness me.

One of the best damn albums of the 2000s, with a message that still resonates with our modern climate. Happy 4th of July, everyone.

It’s like a 10, probably. I’ve never heard this album in full until today. I’m an idiot. Perhaps the titular American idiot. I never knew there was a big running story and plotline and thread here; I’ve only ever heard the big tracks – American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. I always knew there was a Broadway musical, but I never made the connection somehow. This was fucking awesome. There’s not a single missed beat here – from those opening guitar riffs on American Idiot, through the entire running plot of “home sucks, I’m leaving, let’s party, I’m in love, oh shit, never mind, this sucks, I’m going back home” that’s portrayed brilliantly throughout the lyrics and instrumentation of every single track until the sort of epilogue that is “Whatsername,” and the peace that Jesus has finally come to after all his St. Jimmy escapades. It’s a very malleable plot, but what really drives it are these damn songs; every single one of them is fantastic, from the compositions, the guitar riffs, the extremely high energy, and especially in the lyrics. I now understand why all of these are paired so specifically on streaming. You cannot hear one of them without the other, and you really can’t listen to some of these songs by themselves, unless you remember the sort of context of the album. It really is a damn play. One small thing about the plot itself… I dunno, it’s a little weird in the end, given how often people find success outside of their hometown in my experience, but in terms of this hellish post-9/11 suburbia that Jesus finds himself in, maybe he really is just more comfortable at home. Regardless of that, I thought this was fucking spectacular. Absolutely worthy of the hype. Really dumb of me to never listen before now, but I now feel as cleansed as Jesus did at the end of this album. One of the easiest 5s yet.

Álbum of my teenage years

When I was in 4th grade I really wanted my parents to let me buy this album. Unfortunately, there is a giant "Parental Advisory" label on the cover, so my mom didn't let that happen. I was pissed. I'm not sure why 4th grade me wanted this, but I had great taste, this thing is still awesome 20 years later. What I missed at the time was the context. Green Day was very big at this time (Dookie came out a decade earlier), but their popularity had been declining throughout the '90s and they had a bit of a flop album in 2000 before this one came out in 2004. So in many ways this was a bit of a surprise comeback for them. They call this a "punk rock opera", and it's centered around a lower-middle-class suburban teen that's disillusioned about the state of the US at the time (9/11, Iraq War, Bush elections, etc.). Very few of the songs are explicitly political, but the story comes across regardless. This one has a bunch of their hits, "American Idiot" to kick it off, "Holiday", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", and "Wake Me up When September Ends". I enjoyed a lot of the songs that I was less familiar with too, so it stays pretty consistently strong throughout. I tend to like punk that's pretty well-polished, and this meets the criteria. Great energy throughout, strong lyrics, multiple classic songs, a bit of nostalgia for my childhood, what more could I want? A great album overall. 5 stars. Take that mom. Favorite song: Wake Me up When September Ends Other: American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Give Me Novocain / She's a Rebel, Extraordinary Girl / Letterbomb, Whatsername 6/30/24

Nice one Green Day!

Great production, great songs.

There are so many things I'd like to say about this album. In fact, that its taken me 5 months and 100 other albums to finally sit down and begin typing out my thoughts. As I sat down and began waxing poetic on each song—its instrumentation, lyrics, and place in the album’s overarching narrative—I realized that what I really wanted to convey was how much I absolutely love this album. So while this may not be the ten-thousand-word thesis I initially set out to write, the core message remains the same: this is one of my favorite albums.

Genius album! It’s equally fresh today.

Album 447 of 1001 Green Day - American Idiot Rating : 5 / 5 A favorite I had almost forgotten about. A good time to pull this out as it is somewhat as relevant today as it was then. Great tunes...great performance. Hopefully, 20 years is enough time for many to separate it from its politics and really appreciate it for the music.

Great sounds throughout

Pop punk probably at it's absolute finest. Excellent concept album at that.

Classic. Mark Knopfler a hero on guitar

An album from my youth 😂

pogger and green-pilled

Punk classic

Still a great album, lots of nostalgia. Made me pick up my guitar again.

Almost every song is a jam.

Pure nostalgia

Epitome of music

Propulsive popular punk: We rocked along to it, our mock hero's, and they appeared on the Simpsons: Mindfr*ck America - let's commercialise our satire and rage, that's show the capo Basterds. it's good fun.

loved it, one of my fav gd albums

Holy shit! It's been a while since I listened to the entire album, and I forgot how good it is. The same guys that sung about masturbation and were known for being able to play 3 chords put together one of the defining albums of the early 2000's. It's poignant and topical. It's also catchy as hell. I was able to sing along to almost every song on the album. I don't think there is a bad song on this entire album.

This is really good actually. I love punk rock and I forgot about how many bangers Green Day has. So classic and a great way to get me back into trying to finish up this generator. I think another 5 star for me, favourites are literally the entire album

Yes, I know it’s not punk like punk should be. But who cares? It’s non-stop energy, great songs and great musicians. Have always liked Billy Jo’s vocal. Whilst I hate rock operas and musicals, this is the exception to the rule.

Evidemment !

I love how theatrical this album is. Even without seeing the musical, I can picture all of the characters painted throughout the album. I’ve been a big fan of this album since middle school, and it is still holding up even at (almost) 30!

what can I even say. it's American Idiot

Surprise of the year for me. I loved this. Obviously I was obligated to like “American idiot” as a “misunderstood” eighth grader trying to play into a narrative of being cool. In reality, I don’t think I even listened to the whole album when I was a kid pretending to like this to seem cool. But as an adult woman, I was surprised that I actually loved the whole album. Maybe I’m still trying to be cool? Or maybe I just don’t care what people think of me anymore and like what I like because I fucking like it. So Green Day and Taylor swift and Janelle Monet, here I am. I love you all.

One of my favorite albums of all time! Together this album is amazing and each song can stand so well on its own. This one came out when I was in college and really allowing me to to question and change a lot of world views/stances. I have listened to this album numerous times before but still love it today.

If you love pop punk anthems, these guys are the kings. This is probably their best album. Appropriate to get this one on Memorial Day. 20 year's later the American Idiocy has spiraled into American Insanity.

Awww yeah, love how much Green Day rocks out against the fuckery of society, while being so catchy too. The lyrics are as relevant now as they were then. So many great songs on here, and as a whole, it’s a very complete feeling rock opera. They are so fun live, and this was also a cool show to see on Broadway :)

Sounds like an album Blake would fondle himself to …10/10

Love this album. Many of these songs are still regularly listened to.

Very nice album! American Idiot and Wake Me Up When September Ends tracks are the masterpieces! And all other are perfect! Thanks for this album listening, I never heard it before!

Are you kidding me???

When I got this generated, my immedieate thought was "ahh a modern classic". But there is nothing modern about this record anymore. It's 20 fucking years old. It's now a classic. The singles are Green Day's strongest, and so is the rest of the album. Just so consistantly strong, every song an anthem. Truly one of the greatest career resurgances ever seen

Jesus of Suburbia alone can put this up to five stars. Overall though, this record was essential listening as a tween. It's so memorable in my mind, from the rebellion that felt so relatable to me at 10 years old(?!?) to the black shirts and red ties that made up a lot of of the visuals from this era. There's just something about the albums that you grew up with. There's no replacing them.

Absolutely love it. I miss 2004 and this is full of absolute bangers. More of this sort of thing!

This is the first generated album that I’ve actually listened to before. I really liked the album as a teenager and still do now. Great, solid album. Favorite songs: American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends.

One of my most favorite albums of all time

Good as Always. Not sure I\"m going to bother re-listening to things I've listened to hundreds of time and own.

One of the few (and I mean *few*) punk albums that could stand the test of time. 20 years later and there's still so much new artists could learn from an album like this.

Such a classic. I also had never noticed this before but this album has some freaking long songs! Punk hardly ever has songs this long. I really respect that.

MEU PUNK ROCK FAVORITO

Oh yesss!!!! Made me really happy!!! Great album!

Tolles Album von einer Band die Vollgas gibt vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton!

Eine super Platte, vom ersten bis letztem Song!

5/5. This is another one of those albums where although some might call it punk, there are definitely some punk elements but this is more of a rock opera, especially with songs like Jesus and Homecoming. This is a façade and on purpose. You see on the surface, those only listening to the first song and Holiday that is a rebellious album. This is a story about the American Dream. The songs are full of sadness and hope and the need to create polished rock is the only way to tell this story to match the fakeness of radio rock and try to get your message out there while appealing to the masses, counteracting yourself. It's beautiful and wonderful. Also all the songs are so good. Best Song: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday / Boulevard, Wake Me Up, Whatshername

When I was a pop punk obsessed preteen in 2005, you were either a fan of American Idiot or From Under the Cork Tree. I stood staunchly in the latter camp, and even deep into my teens, defended my stance against this era of Green Day. Listening to it now as an adult, I admit my wrongs! I still replay a lot of the emo classics, as any Elder Emo does, but very few actually hold up beyond nostalgia, and even then, “hold up” is a loose term. American Idiot, on the other hand, really does hold up! The production is incredibly tight, and sounds excellent and fresh to this day. The musicianship is top-notch, and it’s even more evident now how their elder-statesmanship helped them stand out at that time. And for a lofty concept album, it’s rarely a boring or pretentious listen, where 8 minute songs rarely feel longer than 4 minutes, and the energy is also there, even during the somber moments. And now, with maturity and the hindsight of time, the political critique feels especially on point, and maybe even works better today. I’d say there’s a handful of critiques to throw at this. The amount of slurs is a bit of a dicey minefield, and even looking beyond the short-sighted Conservative BS of Political Correctness blah blah blah, it does feel counterintuitive to the point being made; at the same time, punk has a history of white men saying slurs to be subversive and then realizing in retrospect that that was a dumb move and distracted from the message, and I think that’s the case here too. I would also say the fact that tracks are glued together as single tracks is dumb, but that’s a very specific streaming-era critique that feels almost ahistorical; sure, it annoys me today, but during the CD era, it would’ve only annoyed me when/if I was trying to make a mixed CD. Finally, I think Tré Cool should never sing ever again, but it *is* only for a moment and during a medley, so it’s forgivable. These critiques are not enough to bring this album down from its height. The only reason I hated this in 2005 was because I thought calling something pretentious and hating it made me smarter. I’m now an adult and know that’s an equally pretentious move. I have ears. I love pop punk. I always have, and I always will. And while my favorite pop punk/emo albums were solidified a decade ago, from a critical perspective, this is a high-water mark for pop punk and a crucial listen, especially today.

Objectively, this is probably not a five. Having said that, this is subjective, so, YEEHAW.

HELL YEAH 5/5

I had a really good time listening to this. I thought perhaps it would have aged terribly or come across as corny, but I think it holds up well. The album is really well produced and there are some absolute pop-punk bangers. It captures a moment in time and I think is a vital inclusion on the list. Fave Tracks: American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We The Waiting, Give Me Novacaine, Wake Me Up When September Ends, 4.6/5

You know, my track record for punk albums hasn't been the best so far. I mean, there's a reason why, as of me writing this review, punk is listed in the "worst genres" part of my summary. Until now, there was really only one punk album I'd gotten that I felt passionate about (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables). On top of that, while it's not necessarily a bad thing, every punk album I've gotten until now, with one exception, was from the 70s or 80s. What about the 21st century punk, huh? Well, if you want a punk album from this century, you'd be hard-pressed to find one better and more important than American Idiot by Green Day. Green Day has always been a band that I've liked, but have never really dived deep into. I've gotta say, American Idiot is a modern masterpiece. The sound in this thing is just amazing. The guitar and bass work is practically perfect, with the riffs for each song standing out in their own unique ways. The drumming is really something special. Tré Cool is just an absolute beast. The singing is great. I think Billie Joe Armstrong is a strong contender for the best singer in punk. The way each song stands out is just amazing. You have of the best energetic songs I've ever heard with songs like the title track balanced out by deeply emotional tracks like "Wake Me Up When September Ends." The addition of the Bohemian Rhapsody-esque multi-part suits with "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming" do a lot to aid in this album's story. Speaking of which, let's talk about the story. This is a concept album through and through. The overarching narrative is quite possibly one of the best I've seen in an album. The sharp song transitions represent the rapidly changing mental state of the main character, and the story actually feels complete. Overall, this album's awesome. It might just be one of my favorite albums of the project so far. 5/5.

Highschool lightning captured in a bottle. Still great to this day despite some of the tracks being VERY worn out / overplayed. Bonus of a great followup playlist in the Spotify recommendations.

I’m really glad I listened to this one after I listened to “Dookie”. The evolution of Green Day is insane. They’re still clearly themselves, but there’s no way they were doing a mini rock opera back then, much less two of them. This is an awesome protest album, maybe the last great one of its kind. I really miss this kind of album. Maybe encapsulates its era better than any other album of the 00’s. Nailed the zeitgeist.

I grew up listening to this album and I still think it holds merit today. It's a 4 but extra points for nostalgia

such a fun album. That transition between Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams was so cool. 10/10

I have listened to Green Day a lot but never got round to listening to this album. I knew a few songs on the album already but every single track hit. I think my favorites are American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia. I will listen again!

- One of the greatest albums ever made - Tells an engaging story of disillusioned dreams - Every single song is great - 6 stars

- Oh my lord yes - Jesus of Suburbia is one of the greatest songs ever written - Holiday is the perfect punk rock anthem - Novacaine continues to be criminally underrated. One of the best songs on the album

This is an absolute classic for me. Just filled with great songs and it is a must for everyone to listen to it.

*Questa recensione potrebbe essere inficiata da una spiegazione di American Psycho che ho appena letto, in quanto mi ricordo American Idiot come molto ficcante, ma poco ironico* Spe, però inficiano anche il periodo in cui lo ascoltavo e le bombe che sono "American Idiot", "Jesus of Suburbia", "Holiday", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" e la un po' troppo inflazionata "Wake me up when September ends"

Unique sound being a punky rock opera, loved it

CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC

Such a fun album. I remember seeing them during the tour of this album. This got many plays when I was a kid. I never got into much past this album but I loved all their others records

Perfect

The best album yet. I LOVE IT! 5 Stars.

American Idiot Jesus of Suburbia Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams WAke Me up When September Ends

A classic!

as subtle as a (ha!) hand grenade, but that's what we needed at the time, okay? is every song on this a perfect 5/5? no, and the non-singles definitely don't have the same punch, but it's not about that. it's about the spectacle, the ridiculousness, the scope - i mean, this album is iconic for a reason. if i see any of you dadrock motherfuckers badmouthing this one, fight me in the parking lot. WHILE american idiot plays.

full disclosure: i am a millennial who loves green day and grew up with this album in middle school. this review may be a little biased. this album is amazing. it was my first introduction to a concept album/rock opera and the songs work amazingly together. billie joe, mike, and tre are all at the top of their game here. the new looks, the anti-bush sentiment, the huge singles, it all came together to create a fresh green day for a new generation. in the TWENTY years since this album came out, I've found myself gravitating away from the simpler and/or more ballad-y songs to the ones that still have new and exciting bits to discover. jesus of suburbia and homecoming are huge bangers, with the latter maybe being the track i disliked the most initially that I've done a complete 180 on. honestly my biggest gripe with the album is them joining two largely unrelated tracks together into super long songs for no reason, like holiday / boulevard. those are separate singles! was that just so iTunes could get my $0.99 twice? jesus and homecoming work since the movement structures are intentional and flow well, but for the rest of them, why do i have to listen to three slower songs first before i can get to the exciting ones afterward? also green day rock band was so important for a weird music nerd like me so thanks harmonix. favorites: everything, but especially jesus of suburbia, holiday, st. jimmy, letterbomb, and homecoming

The amazing thing about this album is its propulsion. At 12 songs clocking in at an hour and 5 minutes, it feels extremely tight. There aren't any wasted notes or words. Each drumbeat and chord, every lyric, is pulling you forward. And yet, this is an epic album. So much ground is covered from the opening riff of "American Idiot" through "Governator." There are some three-hour movies that don't feel long and there are 90-minute ones that are a slog. I love "Dookie" and other Green Day tracks, but this is their seminal accomplishment — a transcendent album that deftly summarized America under Bush for those of us who were't part of a redneck agenda.

Just an awesome album.

Dookie was one of the soundtracks of my 90s. I've always loved how Green Day finish their tracks, a kerplunk or melodic tinkle beats a slow repetitive fade hands down. American Idiot takes the clever lyrics, rock guitar, and thumping almost tribal drums they're known for, and takes it up a notch – the title track is standout, with Wake me up when September ends adding some mellow fabulousness. Green Day will always make me smile too for their huge influence on so many early 00s bands, including and especially my beloved Busted :) Favourite track: Boulevard of broken dreams

The structure of this album is unique. There are only a handful of songs, but most are multiple parts, à la Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" or the second half of Abbey Road. If the album were nonstop punk rock, I'd struggle to enjoy it, but it was well-paced, with the best song for me being the slower "Wake Me Up When September Ends." A lot of the tracks are still well-known today, perhaps because the themes are still highly relevant.

I used to hate on this album, but I think it’s a 5 lowkey

Just as good as I remember it being.

Now I had heard of Green Day and a few songs but I had never heard a record front to back . Title track was good but lemme say this , the run from track 2 "Jesus of surbubia " to the awesome double songs up to "Give me Novacaine/She's A Rebel" and the last two tracks , were some of the best pieces of music I've heard in my life. Only concern was the length of some tracks, but very good record.

Literally 0 skips. Fantastic songwriting and heart through the whole thing and easily one of the most recognizable albums of the 2000s

I really wanted to find something here to keep this from being a 5, but I just couldn’t.

This was in heavy rotation at my house for a long time when it came out. Probably #2 in Green Day's catalog (Dookie) for me, but still tremendous. This band is the apex of pop-punk. If you're into that genre, there's virtually no better album than this.

Banging album. Jesus of Suburbia is a modern classic.

This album is so good. So, so, good.

At first I thought this was one of those iconic albums with massive singles but lesser deep cuts, but then I fell in love with some of those deep cuts (the singles are already part of the soundtrack of my generation). I did not want to acknowledge it, but this is a perfect album, everything is to tight and consistent, it is impressive.

Very good album, loved it

Just the right stuff to wash off the British from my palate

Muy buen proyecto, tremendo concepto e increíble historia 9/10. El segundo mejor album de green day.

Even though the edginess can come off kind of cheesy, this album has some undeniable bangers and is really well produced. I'm sure nostalgia/familiarity played a factor but I had a great time relistening.

About as good as rock concept albums get and undoubtedly one of the high points of Green Day's career. Not just huge hits but a real palpable sense of depth and foresight.

Ein energiegeladenes Punk-Rock-Album, das mit scharfer Kritik an der US-Politik und Gesellschaft nicht spart. Hits wie der Titelsong und “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” sind zeitlos.

Green Day’s magnum opus. An absolute timeless, classic album reaching its 20th anniversary this year . Still as good now as it was then.

I had forgotten how much I loved Green Day when I was in high school. A win for nostalgia.

Let’s get angry at GWB

me encanta este disco, fue como volver a tener 16 caminando por un boulevard de sueños rotos 5/5

I Love Green Day!

Such a statement album. I was always a bigger fan of Dookie, but over the years, this one has grown on me.

How many times have I listened to this album. To me, probably their best.

Loved this growing up. Could listen to it all day

Day59 - Probably the best album of 2004 and still great 20years later

All timer

Stupid stupid nostalgia

Green Day has had a long, very successful career as a pop/punk band. American Idiot is a concept album, a punk rock opera, about Jesus from Surburbia. The band maintained their punk pop sound - guitar driven songs with catchy melodies and interesting lyrics - while telling a story about a disillusioned American kid. The result was critically and commercially very successful. This album tells an interesting, thoughtful story, through some of Green Day's biggest hit songs, like "American Idiot," "Holiday," and "Wake Me Up When September Ends." This is an excellent album, and may be the high point of Green Day's career.

Their greatest work so far. Love every second of this.

Oh boy, this album was MASSIVE my junior/senior years of high school. Sort of past the peak of post-9/11 patriotism hysteria and Bush at the height of his popularity (at least was far as I could tell as a southern American idiot teenager - I think he had many severe critics by then). Say what you want about Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong, or the quality of their music since this one, but in hindsight this was music the people needed to hear. What a brave album to release during this time, with a brave lead single and album title to boot. I remember so many people HATING American Idiot, the song. Again in hindsight and with the benefit of age and paying closer attention to American politics and political history since this album, the reaction to this album was clearly a sign of its effectiveness. Americans in particular I think hear what we want to hear, and when something as popular as American Idiot is playing all over the radio, on TV, and in every store you visit, it’s bound to ruffle all the feathers. The singles (title track, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends) were all huge hits and for good reason, they’re all fantastic. Jesus of Suburbia and Are We the Waiting, are deep track standouts. Wake Me Up When September Ends is the crown jewel here in my opinion, what a track. If I have any complaints about the album it’s that I think it would be more effective if it ended with September, as the last two tracks don’t do much for me. I think in many ways this is one of the most important popular American punk albums ever released. Not sure if they have it in them, but it’d be nice to have American Idiot II released before November.

American Idiot by Green Day is a riveting concept album that follows the journey of Jesus of Suburbia, a compelling antihero representing lower-middle class America. The album is rich with politically charged themes that resonate strongly, even today. Its era-defining hits have cemented its place in musical history, remaining relevant and impactful. While some tracks stand out as powerful bangers, others feel less essential to the overall narrative. Despite this, the album's ability to provoke thought and inspire reflection is undeniable. American Idiot is a bold and unforgettable musical experience that captures the spirit of its time with unapologetic intensity. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 8 STAND OUT TRACK - Are We the Waiting

Great album. Again, grew out of Green Day after high school, but the weird part was, I knew most of the album. My brain suddenly remembered all the catchy hooks and cool riffs. I was surprised to hear how culturally relevant it still was. Definitely on my "Rebel against the world" playlist, so it's made its way back into my library for a glory run that it deserves.

Nostalgia is the best sauce but this is still a solid album.

Это не альбом, это разъëб. Прежде всего разъëб моей молодости.. Отсюда какую песню не вытащи, она существует отдельно, вне сюжета. Одно только не понимаю - зачем 9 минутные песни из нескольких частей?

Green Day were huge in the 90's, but by 2000 were considered washed up. Then they released this concept album and it was massive. It's been a long time since I listened to this so I was a little worried that my memories might be tinted by rose colored glasses. I had no reason to worry. It's still brilliant, not only holding up really well, but still being relevant today.

2/9/24. Another classic album for me that I'll never get tired of. Green Day really went above and beyond in each song, and in a lot of ways the lyrics are still relevant.

I'd forgotten about this album for 2 decades so I'll make up for it now in a regular rotation. Scores high for getting me going.

I almost dropped a 5 on this without even listening, given that I've enjoyed this album about a billion times. Then I realized how foolish of a missed opportunity that would be, so I put it on again and guess what? Still a 5.

This album is a rock opera masterpiece. This was a huge return-to-spotlight moment for Green Day who had consistently put out good-to-great catchy music for a lot of years and across a lot of albums. They have a very specific sound that they have always stuck with, and the American Idiot album was a huge, ambitious concept that they stuck the landing on so well that the judges were all holding 10s. A movement of youth angst targeted at questionable political decisions of the time was perfectly captured in this album and even almost 20 years later it stands tall as a cultural touchstone for the mid 00's.

Not sure how much is nostalgia and how much is genuine, but I always enjoy re-listens of this album

This one is a little harder for me to rate. Not trying to burry the lead or write a book. It's either a 3 or a 5. I was in Junior High when Dookie hit and it was a HUGE record for me. I never became a die hard Green Day fan, but that record was on a rotation in my bedroom and on the bus too and from school. But by the time of American Idiot, I was pushing 25, and while I had fond memories of Green Day, they were just memories. This record is good. Really good. It doesn't have many weak spots. But it doesn't feel as urgent as they want me to feel about it. It isn't as punk. I don't know if any of this is fair. I guess I will just shut up and give it 5.

This unironically is one of the best rock albums of the 2000s and problem the best protest album of that decade.

My first album review! So of course I know Green Day (or at least I thought I did). I knew the singles basically, I’d never really lent into an album. Well the album tracks are fabulous too and I highly recommend this album.

One of the best albums of that generation

A modern classic, it's difficult to overstate just how pervasive this album was when it debuted. Epic, ambitious and sonically-diverse, AI's theme and anxieties were a prescient harbinger for the trajectory of the 21st century. A punk-pop rock opera for the ages. Favorite tracks: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, She's a Rebel

Temasos temasos, posiblemente los causantes de que me quiera apuntar al rollo darks y ponerme la cosa negra esa en los ojos. ta fino el album si si

Kenn ich von früher. Super.

Fabuloso

Heck yeah dude I was living my best middle school life

Punk-rock demasiado pop. Venga, un 5 por ser quienes son.

kolko dugo nisam slusala ovo, samo bangeri

znaci ja se nikad ne bi sama sitila upalit ovaj album al predobar mi je. Znan vecinu pisama, podsjeca me na teen angst razdoblje heh

Great album, remember when a few songs were very big in high school! Nostalgic <3

YES!! I love Green Day! I've heard a lot of the songs off of this album but I don't think I've ever listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Okay when I said I've heard a lot of songs from this...apparently I meant 3 lol. Towards the end of track 2, the melody starts to sound like "Ring Of Fire". I'm not a big fan of these tracks that are two songs back to back but still considered one track. 5/5 As usual, a lot of the tracks were too long for me, but I still had fun and I still love Green Day.

I was ready to write this off as "post-peak" Green Day since I'd moved on by American Idiot. But it's a great album, and uses "album" as a concept. This continues to be peak Green Day

There was a time when it felt like Green Day had lost the plot. Thank god for George Bush: this is often the third best Green Day album if you're an old fan (because Kerplunk still holds those heartstrings) but the best or second best if you're a normal person.

I love this album, grew up on it

When I was probably seven or eight years old, I went to a friend’s birthday party and we watched Shrek The Third on DVD. One of my friends at the party had an mp3 player, and for some reason he offered to show me a song. It was American Idiot. I was listening to it during some sort of scene where people are flying on brooms, and I was like “This is literally the best song I have ever heard.” Some time shortly after, my parents gave me an iPod Nano. We were looking at iTunes to see what songs I should download and I went to that one first. My mom looked at it and said “Do you know what this label ‘explicit’ means?” I said no. She did not let me download it. I ended up downloading the Green Day version of the Simpsons Theme from The Simpsons Movie instead. All of the songs on this are good. The singles are fucking crazy. I have no choice but to give this a 5.

Damn Green Day is really marketing the shit out of their new album. First they do the subway concert with Jimmy Fallon, then they give our group American Idiot on the 1001 albums list! I'm never not giving this album a 5. I've loved it for so long and I feel like I've grown up alongside it. There are no misses (except maybe homecoming) and there are plenty of songs that I've latched onto over the years. Jesus of Suburbia was one of my favorite songs in high school and is still up there now. Letterbomb used to be the song I'd play when maxing out my lifts in the gym. Whatsername is an all time listen and stare out the window of the car song. And there are so many more great ones.

The first ever CD i owned was this. My aunt got it for me. Then when I got a iPod i used to bump holiday on repeat at school. This album hits nostalgia factors, but also holds up today (it potentially gets better over time- like a fine wine). Jesus of Suburbia is potentially my favorite song of all time. Seeing them play it live and a bunch of other songs from this album in 2022 allowed me to die happy. No skips, only rips. Whatername i didn’t love growing up but in recent years it grew on me. I’d say the weakest track on the album is the title track.

The 5 may be the nostalgia taking over, but I had a good time

This was a real banger! Haven’t heard the album before except for some songs and it hits harder than i thought :D

Ok I haven’t listened to this since I was in middle school and I forgot how hard this album goes. Bangers and bops the whole way down. It also seems like there’s a sort of worldview/personal mythology that this album is steeped in that’s a little cringe but also fascinating. A weird balance of “woe is me” and raging against the machine. Who’s Jesus of suburbia? Who’s jimmy? Also, I love a medley and this album delivers well crafted medleys multiple times. Listening also with an ear for a new karaoke songs but everything with potential is too long (downside of medleys). Also, this guy is saying faggot a lot for a straight guy - remember the early 2000s?? Had to skip wake me up when Septemeber ends bc it was too sad. Overall, loved it.

Brilliant album, some of the best transitions between songs I have encountered. Fun listen although not studied too in depth.

Classic, excellent Green Day!

fun and incredibly relevant when it was released in 2004 AND today in 2024. probably an extra star from me for the nostalgia

It's so good. So creative

Méga classique. L'époque pop-punk, le skateboard, la rupture amoureuse. Par contre la durée des morceaux !! 9 minutes!! Sinon, des sons de l'album que j'avais jamais écouté et qu'il faudrait reprendre au calme.

The most unexpected 5 star album ever

Objectively, this album is a little cheesy and dated, but I can't help but be subjective about this one. Boulevard of broken dreams has been a nostalgia track since I was like 5, american idiot followed not long after, and then by middle school I was listening to Jesus of Suburbia and Wake me up when september ends all the time. The rest of the songs are all fine but virtually irrelevant to me because it could just be a 20 minute album of the first 3 (technically 4) songs and wake me up and still get 5 stars from me.

I wasn't especially taken with these guys at the time but over the years this album has grown on me. It really is packed with great songs and although the band was never groundbreaking or innovative they're really good at what they do and what they do is write and perform great songs.

Another one that is tough to be objective about, as it's been in my life for two decades as of 2024. I got this album when I was 10. These songs were unavoidable, all over the radio, TV, everywhere you'd go. This album was huge. I've heard these songs more times than I can count, to the point where I don't always want to hear them again. But they'll be part of me 'til my dying day. Is this punk? I don't think so. But it's near perfect pop/rock music, jam packed with hooks and fresh ideas. This is the definition of a modern populist classic.

Probably my favorite Green Day album. I ran many miles to this beech in the day.

Love the story. Enjoyed reading more about it and the history of it all. I forgot how many good “independent” songs there are. Also fun listening to it with a 2024 lens and knowing which songs became the popular hits and which ones were slept on.

"Classic" 2000s

This album fucks, then goes on the first date.

Phenomenal album. I loved how it’s fully immersed in the story of Jesus of Suburbia. It’s very compelling as well. 5/5 Fav: Letterbomb Least Fav: None

Geiles Album.

Nostalgia Album for me. Head banging thought-out, def more repetitive than i remember but good.

Great memories attached to this album

Excellent

Great album

The 2004 Bush/Kerry election was the first time I paid attention to politics. I was 13 years old and excited to have someone to root for (or root against really). I wanted George Dubya out of the White House, which made me a Kerry voter even though I was too young to cast a ballot. This album came at the perfect time. I felt angry and frustrated about the state of the world and Green Day fueled my fire. The morning after the election, I wallowed in the new misery of knowing my candidate had lost. On the bus ride to school that day, I played “American Idiot” on my Walkman because it felt like the only thing to listen to. I’m so happy to report that the album is still awesome. The first four tracks in particular are fantastic. The epic 9-minute “Jesus of Suburbia” was always my favorite and I get just as caught up in its drama now as I did when I was 13. The other epic song, “Homecoming” is stunning too. Man, drummer Tré Cool is incredible. On the early Green Day albums you can hear him imitating The Who’s Keith Moon (and doing a great job, I might add). He does those thundering tom fills just as well as Moon did. But by “American Idiot,” he’s a beast all his own. He can play big and dramatic stadium rock or blistering punk. A few times, he even brings out the doo-wop influence that hides in a lot of Green Day songs. And since the album features a lot of multi-part songs, he often has to change genres on a dime.
