Reviews (page 13 of 13)
I think the guitar work on this is pretty good, and I think Jimmy Hendrix is actually a good singer/performer to my tastes, but this is likely an artist I'd much rather see live than listen back to. Some classics on this album make this one of his better albums, for sure. 3.5 to 3.
Good album. Taking 3 songs away I’d definitely have on repeat.
A bit more plain noodling on here than I expected but still a classic in every way. I do think some tracks meander a bit, but the monoliths of "All Along the Watchtower" and "Voodoo Child" make this LP a must for any rock fan.
I was never the biggest Hendrix fan in general, and more so a fan of the bangers, but there are some great numbers on this.
I’ve never been a huge fan, but I do like some of these songs.
Glad I'm finally listening to Voodoo Chile, because it's a masterpiece. Not entirely my vibe but I can appreciate that it's incredible music. Honestly, I do get kind of sick of listening to all that guitar, it's impressive but a lot. 3 stars but my personal opinion factors in heavily.
i can understand why this man's a legend... those guitar riffs sound complicated. but not my cup of tea im sorry i may be too young and uncultured
Wa ok
First listen awful. 2nd or 3rd I started to like it.
I appreciate and recognise the fact that Hendrix could play the guitar like few others. Obviously a generational talent, and over the years I've tried to enjoy his music, but it really doesn't do it for me. I totally understand why others enjoy this, which isn't the case for a lot of other albums on this list, and if I'd grown up listening to this, I might have been on your team. This album has its moments, but I don't really want to hear Hendrix shredding and yelping for over an hour. Soz.
Annoying ass effects straight out the gate. A lot of music from this time sounds to much like musizieren to me. Not enough structure or repetition for me to connect with. Just hooting and hollering. I feel like they had just invented the guitar pedal and felt the need to abuse it in every song. And the drums are to quiet and nonchalant imo, especially because all the other instruments feel way more present and strong. But can appreciate it nonetheless.
Wel aardig, Hendrix klikt nooit echt voor mij
Great tunes throughout, but horribly unfocused mess of an album
На этом альбоме Хендрикса я по крайней мере услышал какой-то ритм и композицию в отличие от предыдущих, где лишь запилы и терзания гитары.
Sorry, Jimi. Just not my style.
In the spirit of the purpose of the list, yes, I agree this is a record everyone should listen to at least once. It IS groundbreaking, he was a talented guitarist, and this record's influence on everything that followed is pretty immeasurable. Do I like it? No, I bloody don't. While some of the poppier moments, such as Crosstown Traffic, and of course Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) (and absolutely NOT that epic 15-minute dirge earlier in the album) are bearable, to the point of almost being enjoyable, much of it is a rambling barrage of twiddly, mumbling, squawky, silliness that I could do without. It has its place, but not in my house.
Okay so that Crosstown Traffic riff is instantly recognisable and pretty fine, most of the rest of it just leaves me completely cold.
boring
There are some bangers but then there are some other songs that feel mildly lost if that makes sense
Important maybe. But not for me. I haven’t listened to much Hendrix but this is what I imaginef
Not for me
I normally don't really mind Jimi, but this album kind of blows. Just a real boring sound.
Classic tracks throughout and undoubtedly influential as hell. But the filler on this album is of its time and has aged badly. I love you hendrix but the drugs were better back then and I'm not feeling the middle of this album. In reality it's a 7/10 but for the purpose of must listen albums, it has to rank low
Besides the last two songs on the album. It felt like a long jam session.
My god, so much of what I heard was completely pointless. Voodoo chile - FIFTEEN?!!!! minutes of pretty much all just disjointed unmemorable riffing and drum fills with zero progression, zero point. Like everybody involved just forgot what they're meant to play next and filling the time while they wait for someone else to remember. Even knowing the best was at the end I DNF'ed. Maybe later, I just don't care any more.
Rambling psychedelic rock that has its moments but the voodoo child can't do much magic here IMHO. This era just generally leaves me a bit bored or repulsed. The former applies to most of this album.
como guitarrista, lo disfruto. como fan en general de la música, no me genera casi nada.
A couple of nice ones but the rest is kinda boring. I like “House burning down”.
79/100 very impressive for its time but thats about it very overrated really. some of the songs were so unnecessary
I would love to give this a shot another day, but I didn’t have the attention span to give it its due yesterday.
Listening to this feels like looking at one of those pictures of a dog wearing sunglasses. I guess when hendrix was at his peak the guitars sounded revolutionary, but now I find all the noodling kind of exhausting. Jimi, I get it, you miss that electric woman and you drive your car at 90mph.
An iconic album, but not quite to my taste...
Meandering and the biggest snoozefest on this entire list for me so far. Boo.
Revolutionary guitar playing, but not every song is up to the same standard - not my favourite album by Hendrix.
Früher hat diese Musik besser gepasst.
some okay-ish songs, but everything gets ruined by the neverending noodling and jamming. also he can't sing for shit.
I think the beginning of the album was much more interesting then the end.
Idk, there are some Jimi Hendrix songs that I really enjoy, but none of them were on this album. This was…fine?
I don't get the hype :( .
Not my cup of tea at all. I don’t think psychedelic rock is for me
cant listed to more than 3 songs
A couple of familiar tunes, some OK stuff, one very long stuff (15 mins)
almost every song in this album started off really strong. however after about 1-2 minutes of really good vocals and instrumentals, it felt like jimi forgot he was recording a song and started his own jam session… I think he got a little too lost in his music which of course is a good thing, i just dont feel the need to listen to 75 min of jamming. If the songs were cut shorter or they stayed on track, the album would have been great. however i felt like most songs ended up loosing their melody and in the end, all sounded the same. It dragged on for me. Jimi is such good guitarist and vocalist so i really wanted to love this album but it wasnt my fav 4/10
Good listen. Jimi was such a talent.
I mean it is a classic, but admittedly not my type of classic rock
не мое 3
Couldn't finish it in one go - I'm sure the guitar playing is historic and groundbreaking but it's causing me anxiety. Didn't ever finish it - too much for me really. Do appreciate the technical genius though
kinda boring to me
‘Little miss strange’ is honest to god such a good song. Also it’s all so funky and strange which makes me think of like LSD or something
02
Great guitar of course, just probably wouldn’t listen much personally
Legendary. But to me, loud guitars with a few harmonies.
Couple of good songs but long winded
I like some but not my kind of music
Too long and too repetitive.
🎸🎸
A couple of good songs. The rest a drugfuelled search for a melody.
Other than the most popular song by far, the album itself is lackluster and pretty boring. I couldn't latch onto any main melodies for a lot of the songs. Sometimes (often) it sounds like someone smashed their head on a keyboard.
Whilst appreciating the skill i ask myself do I want to listen to this album again, and that's a no thanks
I expected this album to stick out a lot more to me given the popularity of some of the songs on it, but honestly it was just fine. Nothing memorable for me.
I have to come clean: Despite being a so-called fan of the rock genre, I had completely wrong expectations for Jimi Hendrix and this album as I was excited to hear some guitar solos, not so much old-sounding singing and less virtuous drumming. Credit for being an artist with so much variety, for me the melodies were lacking and the guitar tuning is not my cup of tea.
Some bright spots & an iconic style, but—in all honesty—despite being super-important for the genre and/or music as a whole, not a top album for me.
A swirling migraine of genius and chaos.
too long
Not so great
Antar ingen musik jag lyssnar på hade funnits utan honom men javenne, I don't feel it.
Bit long and every song blends together
This album did not really do it for me. If I appreciated guitar jams and solos more I would have been more into it I think. It is also hard to follow up Willie. Not my favorite but also not terrible
I know this is supposed to be an all timer album, but just doesn’t do it for me. Had to listen to this once in my “History of Rock and Roll” class back in the day and felt the same thing. Would be awesome to see live, but as an overall album the Voodoo Chile, Gypsy eyes, Come On, and All Along The Watchtower are obvious hits and the rest doesn’t do it as much for me.
The man can play a mean guitar, but there is such a thing as too much great guitar.
This double album contains exactly one straightforward, catchy rock tune of any merit ("Crosstown Traffic"). Nearly everything else is a lot of meandering experimentation, sound effects, needless sub-prog epics, loose 'n' casual vocals and lead guitar panned from left to right and back again (like wow, man), none of which gels into anything interesting.
Sorry but this is not his best.
good not great
A bit much
Its alright, didn't care too much for any single track.
Wasn’t my thing
[...And the Gods Made Love], the instrumental intro to [Little Miss Strange], [Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)] I like [All Along the Watchtower] and then [House Burning Down] best, relative to this album. The former I wouldn't skip through if it came on the radio. I may even listen to it independently if in the mood. It's giving D&D, too. Good for listening to when homebrewing 5e. Favourite: All Along the Watchtower
The guitar is really impressive and some bits were fun, but it just isn’t my thing overall. Wouldn’t even choose or enjoy it a ton as background.
This is a tough one to rate. On one hand you have absolute incredible, timeless songs and virtuoso guitar skills. On the other hand you have 14 minutes long songs that sound like jam sessions and the whole album veers from one thing to another (interspersed with a lot of solos). One reviewer noted that Electric Ladyland sounded like a bootleg compilation, and I'm inclined to agree. There are so many ideas here but a real lack of focus or curation. If Hendrix had gone on to make more music, I suspect this album would have been a footnote in his story. It'll have to be a three.
Didn’t like it, just not my kinda thing. I get that it’s important but it’s just apart from my time.
Apart from All Along The Watchtower... it's really nothing to write home about.
Left me snorin
I didn’t finish this one 😬
Uuuh spændende!! Ham har jeg ikke lyttet så meget til før Kendte all along the watchtower
not a Hendrix fan even though I know he's a rock god and all. I find his singing to be unique but monotonous. I know his playing is supposed to be important and interesting but it's just not something I want to listen to. I like All Along the Watchtower.
I know he’s a genius but I just don’t get his music.
Meh. Very talented but not my jam.
Electric Ladyland feels like a euphemism my friends would have come up with in year 10 for idk vibrators or smth. Hm so far enjoying this more than other psychadelic rock. Cream of the crop ig. Oh Voodoo Chile sure is 15 minutes long. Stop this. Yeah sorry i cant be arsed with this like I'm trying to listen but its just very capable background noise to me. I'm sure the guitar solos are amazing but I don't love guitar solos. I'll shout out still raining still dreaming the guitar is fun here Oh thank christ for all along the watchtower. I know it's a cover. It's the only song I've genuinely enjoyed. So. I mean I'm glad I listened to it, it belongs on the list i just didn't care for it.
There was a lot of meandering on this album. Didn't feel it.
I honestly thought I’d like this. I didn’t. Technically great but monotonous for me. All along the watchtower though. That’s great
idk maybe i'm in a pissy mood today but 1hr15min of wah is fuckin annoying
Was just never a Hendrix fan
Not my jam, but yeah sure he’s a god.
Trop de guitare
Not my music
Ok
Yeah, truly not my stuff. Forward thinking, revolutionary, yada yada yada. I dislike this one because there’s nothing I can really grab onto. Everything feels either a little washed out or a bit amorphous. Standout track is: Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)
Much more bluesy and rock n rolly than I'd like
I am generally ambivalent towards this era of rock music and its sacred cows. I've held this view since I was a teen. Now, some 20 years later, with some humility, I occasionally have to make concessions for some of the shit-talking I've done over the years. "...And the Gods Made Love" such a great opener, and acts as a powerful mission statement when paired with "Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland)" "All Along the Watchtower" is unfuckwithable. However, while Jimi Hendrix may be a the best guitar-player that ever lived, but he was not an excellent songwriter. Too often, Hendrix sheds most of what makes him special and opts for boring blues songs, ("Rainy Day, Dream Away") or totally loses the plot on whatever "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" and "Still Running, Still Dreaming" are supposed to be. Thought the highs are very high, Hendrix can't make up for the doldrums between great tracks, especially when dealing with a double-album.
Rock that is mostly guitar solos with no much catchy singing.
Okay but not really my thing.
Ubi, naporno
Rustige muziek, maar wel veel gepingel op de gitaar. Voor mij hoeft dit allemaal niet zo. **
didnt care for it
Nope
I didn’t like it. That surprises me.
1/1001 First time listening to Jimi Hendrix out of my own accord and it's not my thing at all. The guitar solos are nice I guess. I thought the lyrics were a little creepy, but this album is 30 years older than me, so I can't judge it by today's standards. It felt like it went on forever, most of it just sounded like disguised jam sessions to me. Also realized I don't have the time for 15 min songs in my life, I get bored to quickly.
I didn’t understand it I don’t think this one is for me
It was okay but to long of nothing
Voodoo chile was kinda cool, all along the watchtower was the best, overall not that good
not bad
This is a weird one to rate. 3 absolute classics, a couple good songs, and a whole bunch of boring hippie blues rock. And what’s the deal with the production? There were other bands during this same time making good-sounding records, I’m not sure why this one sounds like it was recorded underwater and MIDI-compressed. But hey, Jimi sure can play the guitar (not always evident in these songs) and Mitch was one of the swingenest rock drummers ever.
I know dude is a guitarist, but half of this album was instrumental. Got kinda bored
While I appreciate Hendrix's contributions to music and culture, I don't appreciate "Guitar God" as a genre of music. Looking at the tracklist, I am already terrified of 15 and 10 minute-long songs. I lasted 5 minutes into Voodoo Chile. I get this dude rips, but my attention span can't handle this. Onward... Made it to Gypsy Eyes - I'm hanging in through the shorter songs. But I'm feeling a little lopsided and realize that it's because all of the drums are in the left channel. Wild that stereo was new around this time, but very glad we have learned from this. Beginning to experience fatigue. Enter electric harpsichord and outer space guitar effects. Extreme cognitive dissonance. Ooof only made it 90 second into 1983. Is this what the future sounded like in 1968? I'm all fuzzed out. Like the Beatles, I will accept Hendrix's impact of rock and roll, but I will likely never be a fan.
Meh
I didn't really like the first one, because it isn't the type of music I like to listen to, I would recommend it to people that like rock music though because I feel like it has a good sound to it. I liked the second song a little bit more because I liked how it had more words than the first one
Song:all along the watchtower i Kind of like this song because it's not my favorite but i will still listen to it. Song: Voodoo Chile i like this song because it reminds me of the fourth of July because in the lyrics it says something in the sky and i know its not fireworks i think its fire he is saying but that is what i would say Song:long hot summer night i like this song because it is summer themed and it sounds like a summer song and i LOVE summer. i would recommend these songs a little bit
I dont like this album. I dont like this because its not my music taste. I didnt like it because its not my style of music and because its boring. I reccomend it to people who like this kind of music
Boring, samey songs.
Kinda boring
can't dispute the influence of hendrix, but this album isn't really doing it for me. there's some good ones, all along the watchtower is a classic. but this album feels all over the place at 16 tracks. i have a deep appreciation of the music of this time but it's certainly not a top genre for me.
Most of this isn't songs. It's like little song ideas that never come to pass. And there is A LOT of it. Like dude, get an editor for fucks sake. Don't put the only two actual songs last.
Guitars! Noise! I remain unmoved. Self indulgent.
Not my style
just longer than it needs to be
3 good songs. 3 good songs on an hour and 15 minute album. The rest is either boring blues or faffing about. For the life of me I don’t know why this album is on here other than to complete the Hendrix Trilogy. Buy the best of Jimi Hendrix instead so you can hear the good songs and skip the rest. Ok I’m being a little harsh. There are other good songs buried in this album but man is it way to long and a lot of the back half feels like a waste of time
There are a couple good songs, but it's not my favorite Hendrix album.
Niet aan mij besteed. Respect voor de beste man en wat hij tentoonstelt aan gitaar skills is indrukwekkend maar kan niks met dit soort muziek. Ook de hits Voodo Child en All Along the Watchtower hebben me nooit wat gedaan.
Tim gives it a 3 because his tolerance for endless electric guitar solos is far higher than mine.
Loved the guitar sound but genre wasn’t for me
I have to give the -1 double album penalty here. Musically it's a 3, but the limitations of the rating system means that this ends up rated lower than the Korn album. Maybe I need to reevaluate my rating system. And my life.
Not really my bag but one or two good songs.
Just too much going on, musically but also in my day today - I just couldn't get into this album at all. My last Hendrix album was a 5, this one I could hardly get through and almost skipped through some of the bloated tracks with the endless noodling. I stuck with it, but by the time All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo child came on (which I normally love) I was so irritated I just didn't enjoy them. Not sure if I'll regret this score, but its made me realise just how much my mood can impact on the enjoyment of an album, and even bangers can be soured by the tracks leading up to them! I do love that this is randomly generated, but sometimes the album does not match the vibe of the day!
I didn't mind 'Are you experienced,* bit this just felt like a confused, disorganized mess. But All Along the Watchtower is a great song.
I expected better
Damn, I didn't expect to not like this album. Felt a bit boring and scattered thematically. The creative licks kept the album alive, but for me it wasn't enough to add cohesion.
Several great singles swamped by too many meandering album tracks. I thought i liked jimi hendrix , but I think i actually like the greatest hits.
Only listened to the last two songs, per reviews by other listeners. I’m finding my music tastes are not as eclectic as I thought. I know Jimi Hendrix is a legend and I’ve heard some of his music that I liked, but this wasn’t it. 2 stars because of his legendary status.
I've seriously listened to music since 1971 but never listened to this album and never been much of a Hendrix fan. Now that I've listened to Electric Ladyland I'm happy I made both decisions 53 years ago.
This album’s only saving grace is All Along The Watchtower. Next!
I just am not a Jimi Hendrix gal. Sorry.
Bin du guitare, peu de sens. C'était agréable. C'était artistique. C'étais pas mon genre.
5/10 This was a shock, for an album considered an all-time great I found it quite poor Absolutely all over the place, inconsistent, needed an edit, felt like nobody was willing to say no Really good musicianship, Hendrix vocals excellent Most of the songs and lyrics seemed extremely underwritten and reliant on jam Case in point was the unforgivable 14 minutes of Voodoo Chile: a boring, self-indulgent slow blues jam that shouldn’t have even been on the album. Hated it But the album ended suuuper strong with those last 2 songs, that pumps it up in the scores Best: Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
I never understood Hendrix. I get the skill level, but songwriting? Mostly a wankfest. Dull and repetitive.
While I get the importance of Hendrix I just don’t care for Hendrix
Not a fan. To me Jimi Hendrix's music has this self-indulgent "Look at me being brilliant" vibe. All along the watchtower is sort of alright and raises the score to 2 stars.
This might be sacrilegious, but this doesn't do a whole lot for me. Sure, I can appreciate that it's _good_. But it's not my thing.
Not my jam
I hate the 60s so much, its unreal. everything from that decade has been mediocre at best.
I was excited to finally have a Hendrix album to listen to, but upon playing it, I'm nowhere near as amazed as I thought I'd be. I'm sure this was groundbreaking at the time but it sounds to me today like repetitive old blues. Watchtower was the only number that I felt had a sense of magic. I've realized Hendrix is someone I can appreciate in small doses on a track-by-track basis but not in album format. It's unlikely I'll listen to another one of his albums in full again.
J'ai bien aimé le deuxième morceau. Nice
Instrumentally good, lyrically meh.
Sorry Jimi, just not my jam these days.
3 classic songs hidden in there... But you'll get super bored waiting for them
Playing catch-up and just listened to and (surprisingly) loved Axis, but this is not the same.
This is a hard one for me. A couple of truly great and classic songs, but the rest of the record is just bad.
Feels like a chaotic jam sesh that will not end.
guitar rips but i just dont like his singing yll
This is going to be controversial…. I’m not a fan of music for guitar enthusiasts. I do not want to listen to your 3 minute long guitar solo. Even if you are an icon…
Be prepared for an unpopular opinion. I was so excited to hear this because its Jimi Hendrix, but honestly I was not impressed. Is he talented? There is no doubt he is amazingly talented! But a lot of the songs were just random guitar rifts (that are amazing) but didn't really connect or feel like they had a purpose. The music feels like a guy who is amazing at guitar is just messing around at his home and you are sitting on his couch. It is great skill but I am not sure I can consider it a great album.
I can only take Hendrix in small doses.
i didn’t really like it but there’s worse ig-
Not my thing. A bit to electric jam band for me.
classic
Whether by random or by design, I've had the three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums in order, and each one has deteriorated in quality, from 4* -> 3* -> 2*. This album is saved only by Voodoo Child (both the jam and the single) and Watchtower. The jam was new to me and I loved it, though the last couple of minutes rambledba but. The other two I know well. But the rest of the album was extremely disappointing. Absolutely nothing stuck out of any quality. Reading up afterward it sounds like this album isn't grower so I'll try it again at a later date, but right now i can't help but feeling let down by this entry.
15 MIN LÅNG LÅT WTF Bättre än vad jag trodde dock
I found it to meander rather than accomplish what it set out to do.
This album is not for me. I appreciate the impact Hendrix had on the rock and roll scene in the 1960s, but this album is kind of a mess. There are long bluesy riffs, psychadelic synths, and then the poppy Crosstown Traffic. All Along the Watchtower of course stands out as always classic. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) also stands out as a great rock anthem. The rest fell flat for me.
Some real high highs, but this is too noisy / dissonant for me to really get behind. Can see how influential it is, but it's not a fun listen for me.
Jazz? "It has since been viewed as Hendrix's best work and one of the greatest rock records of all time. " | don't like, gave up on the 4th song
Super psych.
Iconic if you love electric guitar, way too much for me though.
Surprised to not really like this
I gave it a shot and it's just not for me. I just can't get into the bluesy Rock featured predominantly on this album, and the more Rocky blues songs just aren't interesting enough for me to latch on to. Best Songs: N/A Listen Again:No
Surprisingly disappointed by this - couple of great tracks but the rest very “meh”
Burning of the Midnight Lamp was the only real standout for me.
Very old-school rock type, like the intro to a movie about an American summer camp in the 1990s or 80s. It makes me feel like a cool highschooler that wears baggy jeans and plaid shirts, lives in The Bronx with black uncles, and occasionally smokes while strumming the guitar in my room
3 songs in it's a bit all over the place Guitar playing is as good as expected and is very haunting at times (I like this) Sometimes the guitar was annoying and sounded a mess and too shrill like at the end of Come On but that could be because of the recording quality Not many of the songs 'sticking' with me but I guess people love this album for the guitar playing? And excellent guitar playing isn't that important to me in regard to the music I like Guitar becomes annoying by the end I saw some other reviews praising how destructive it becomes which I understand but I still don't like the sound of it All along the watchtower is a really good cover and the guitar fits this so well along with the constant, danceable drum in the background Jimi's voice isn't bad I don't feel inclined to revisit this album any time soon, same goes for most of the songs
Schrammeliges Rockalbum
Didn’t finish, it seemed like mostly jam sessions
Most songs are boring.
The Blues was good.
disrespectful of my time and boring. the last 2 songs are fine but not worth the hour plus of waste.
I know he’s supposed to be an amazing guitarist, but meh. The long instrumentals weren’t really my thing.
In all honesty I was very excited to get a Joni Hendrix album but I have to say I am disappointed. Voodoo child the second one is very very good but also what I was expecting the whole time. If all of the songs had been like this instant 5 to be honest, but I was falling asleep the first many songs.
C …And the Gods Made Love - 3 Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) - 3 Crosstown Traffic - 2 Voodoo Chile - 2 Little Miss Strange - 2 Long Hot Summer Night - 2 Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) - 2 Gypsy Eyes - 2 Burning of the Midnight Lamp - 3 Rainy Day, Dream Away - 2 1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) - 2 Moon, Turn the Tides… Gently Gently Away - 3 Still Raining, Still Dreaming - 2 House Burning Down - 2 All Along the Watchtower - 4, you’d think this would be an auto-5, but after listening to 14 Jimi tracks before this, it kind of loses it’s allure. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - 2 This was long and just not my cup of tea. By the time I got to All Along the Watchtower, a song I previously loved, it sounded so much worse. It was actually concerning. It was like watching how your food gets made, it just ruins it forever.
Clearly a masterpiece but busy and hard to get into
I really don't like Jimi Hendrix. I didn't hate this album but I didn't care for any of the songs. I'm not disputing his talent; it just does nothing for me.
Maybe I need headphones and more weed - the listen in the car was a little interrupted.
Not as good as I was expecting or hoping for
Not my favourite.
Boring wankery
Final two tracks were good, seemed like a lot of chaotic noise otherwise. Don't think this has aged that well. 2.5
Oh how I have tried to love this. I love psychedelic music so gutted that I’m missing out on this but I don’t get it. Possibly missed the boat on this one, that the guitar sounds & studio techniques are dated and now the norm. Trying to listen and spot the barriers being smashed 50 years down the line is tricky, Half Man Half Biscuit smashed more barriers in their latest EP. There’s a melancholy to this typical of the time. I like the way you can hear people in the studio having a party though. Best guitarist ever I wouldn’t know about that it’s not obvious from this. It’s a wide ranging LP lots of styles it’s a proper double LP. Maybe half a trip instead of my bottle of red would do the trick, there’s loads going on but he’s no singer to my ears. No surprise given the age but this has dated. Very clear Stone Roses influencer for their 2nd LP but they should have stuck with the Byrds.
Pretty jammy. Like stoner jazz.
This is the third, and I believe final Hendrix album on this list. I still think the dude is crazy overrated. Yeah, All Along The Watchtower is a stone cold classic, but the rest doesn't interest me. I dont care that he was a guitar virtuoso; if he can't write songs that I don't really want to hear that means nothing to me. His vocals have always been supbar too. Feel free to fight me on this one.
You know very good. Except that it stressed me out majorly, I’m not a random sounds person.
Man tokio tipo muzika yra 50 ant 50.
Sorry Jimi but somebody should have stepped in here and told you this album is a load of wank with two good songs
2.5
Voodoo Child is a powerful blues songs and its goddamn forever long. Burning Of The Midnight Lamp is pretty good. Still Raining, Still Dreaming sucks.
Not a fan of the genre of psychedelic blues...but, I will say, Mr. Hendrix can play the heck out of that guitar!~ Best song is "Cross Town Traffic"
Niet flink geluisterd maar eh
Oj ja råka somna tusen gånger medan albumet var igång snark
There are the tracks you already know and love - Voodoo Child, Crosstown Traffic, All Along the Watchtower - and then the rest is a meandering, unfocused mess, jazz-like tracks which go on no particular journey. It’s a massive disappointment from such talented artists.
Hmm. This kind of struck me as a snooze-fest. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood? Or maybe it's... just kind of a snooze-fest? I liked "Burning of the Midnight Lamp," which is a tune I was not familiar with, but it feels like overall this record is here just to prop up the last two tracks. It's a damn strange thing to see an album where the best two songs are track numbers 15 and 16, ha. Pretty ballsy in a way!
Not a huge Hendrix fan in general, and this may be my least favorite album that we have listened to on this list. Just average late sixties rock IMHO. 2.5/5
I doubt very very few people have all 1001 albums on this list. Or 1001 albums in general. So I use other sources, like youtube music or spotify or whatever. I found electric ladyland on youtube, with the songs coming from a collection of individual posts. The first song, and the Gods made Love... was a video of a record spinning, playing this song. the second... background music for someone playing quake(?) Oddly amusing, but tough to get through all of it to the masterpiece of the album.
All Along the Watchtower is Great. Everything else seems uninteresting and excessive. I'm not sure Voodoo Child could be a good 4 minute song... why do i need 15 minutes of it? Ugh.
1. ... And The Gods Made Love - are these sounds recorded in Hell? Kinda like the whooshing sound but the demonic voice really wasn't necessary 2. Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) - I like the production, but the song itself ain't anything special 3. Crosstown Traffic - more funky compared to the previous two songs. I like it well enough, but not enough to add it to a playlist 4. Voodoo Chile - nice guitar in the intro, kinda get boring afterwards. Oh damn, after three minutes I notice this song is 15 minutes long. What in the fresh hell. *After 10 minutes I've decided I really dislike Jimi Hendrix's voice - which bodes well for the remaining 12 tracks on this album - and that the guitars are nice, but 10/11 minutes is really my limit. Yeah let's just end this not-so-short-track with 20 seconds of mumbled talking, great, thanks guys! 5. Little Miss Strange - Giving me all the old-school vibes 'came into my parlour'. Cute bop I don't really care about, just grateful it's pretty short 6. Long Hot Summer Night - I like the 'woop woop woop' in the background. Can't help but to hear 'Hot girl summer' - the memes ruined me I fear. 7. Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) - Common theme again: I like the guitar, the vocals and lyrics bore me to death. 8. Gypsy Eyes - Even the guitar is kinda boring in this one. Also the lyrics did not age well... 9. Burning of the Midnight Lamp - Just waiting for this album to end while I'm studying tbh 10. Rainy Day, Dreamy Away - Was the first sound on this track a cough? Ew. So this is just... stoners talking to each other over a funky beat? With one of them sometimes making sounds like he's got at least a cold? I'll pass, thanks. (Nice guitar though). 11. 1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be) - thirteen fucking minutes!? Are you kidding me right now? Was I just put through almost a minute of wind gushing with cowbells? (11 minutes in: oh my god how is this still the same song, releeeaaase me, please) 12. Moon, Turn the Tides...Gently Gently Away - Again, this is just wind? Damn the hippies were really fucking high when they decided to hype this man up. 13. Still Raining, Still Dreaming - I'm liking the guitar intro. The rest of the track is, again, not capturing my attention. 14. House Burning Down - Just sounds like the rest of the album to me 15. All Along the Watchtower - Nothing really stands out about this one either, except for the fact is has half a billion plays on Spotify and I can't remember ever listening to this before. 16. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - The last track, just five more minutes. What can I say? Hmm.. I like the guitar. Conclusion: two stars for the guitars
Boring... "Oh but it is great if you smoke a joint and listen to it" "Well, I didn't..."
He may be an exceptional guitar player, a historic icon and the first for may things that come to mind when thinking about the 70th. Lots of people learned and copied from him. So I give him that. However I could not listen to the whole album. Maybe I need to get stoned first to understand it.
Meh
2/5 Not really my style of music, thus making it not enjoyable
Buen disco muy rockero de los 70 psicodélico, que se puede decir de jimi, aun así no lo considero su mejor disco, mucho jam
appreciate the good guitar, but just not a rock fan.
At the time of release, I'm sure this was an incredible album, but imo its aged quite poorly. Even ignoring my personal opinion of not really enjoying psychedelic rock, every "guitar solo" I heard just sounded like noodling in the studio
A really high quality extended jam session but noodling on a a guitar is still noodling.
With the notable exception of a couple of songs, I don't really care for a double album of someone taking psychedelics.
Hendrix vind ik echt super, maar zijn albums zijn voor mij toch vaak iets te bluesy en wisselvallig.
Not for me...anymore. I technically should be a Hendrix fan but I'm just a greatest hits hero. Crosstown Traffic is bluesy but the rest and bit stoney...and I don't get stoned any more.
It was alright. Good background music
Not really my thing.
The best song on this bloated catastrophe is a cover. That's all you need to know.
Very meandering the Beatles are better
Nope. Not for me.
That's a real rough start for an album ngl. I guess I'm just not the biggest fan of that overly distorted sound design. As soon as crosstown traffic hits, it feels like it gets sort of better, but then Vodoo Chile comes up and I feel another deep sigh coming. I think I might just not be getting that "typical" Hendrix sound/style. It just might not be my cup of tea tbf. Not proud to admit it, but I didn't even get through the whole album.
не для мене хз, застаріло, гітара, казна шо
Sound like a gay dude tryna sing
Das langweiligste Album, das ich hier bisher hören musste. Ganz schrecklich.
no
I had to skip Voodoo Chile and 1983! Didn’t listen to Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). I didn’t mind it as much as I thought I would, but not my favorite. Didn’t add any songs to my liked. 1/5 ⭐️
Too much drum.. and too slow for me. Not my favorite..
I appreciate how he experimented with his music in such a creative way but I personally get the itch from this… 🥴
I feel bad, but Jimi Hendrix is just not my thing ... It always feels like they should have rehearsed together more. It's like 6 people playing their own thing and not worrying about what anyone else is playing ...
its not good to my ears 😭
Long songs not good.
The first track reminded me of the sounds my mom and dad were making while cooking spaghetti noodles and talking when I was tripping balls on mushrooms. That track gets a 5 for the intense feeling of deja vu it produced. The rest of the album is a confused cacophony of great genres who’s parts far exceed the whole.
Another album where I have heard one song and the rest of them doesn't even have close to the same amount of listens combined. While there isn't anything wrong with the other songs most of them are very experimental and from a time which I am not. These things combined gives this album a low score for me. Maybe hearing them in another context would change that but I can't think of when that would be other than in the 60s.
First "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..." and now this... I am being properly bent over by the 1001albumsgenerator when it comes to hour+ albums. FUCK. Alright guys, I'm. I give up. I don't know when I'll review again. I really need to catch up on my 32 album backlog. I really wanted to exist in the present with the 1001albumsgenerator community. I've wanted it so fucking bad. *dog whimper* I just can't do it. I can't TAKE this shit no more, man. All I wanted to do was like I was fucking music-deprived I wanted to fucking put on some music have a good time have a good listen. I hate my life. I was curious to give this one a listen. I've heard good things about Jimi Hendrix, though I don't think I've heard a single song of his in my life despite being a big enthusiast of rock music. I'll chalk it up to him having a shockingly small discography for an artist of his stature and belonging to a decade of music that I don't really care for. I have to admit that I am getting off on the wrong foot with Jimi. I can only think of one hour-long album that I have viewed favourably in the past. It's already impossibly hard to make a single good song as is. The odds of compiling multiple good songs into a cohesive, collective body of music is infinitesimally small and the odds of those good songs making it onto a good hour-long album is pretty much never going to happen. I value brevity, which is what I'm trying to get at in the most unconcise possible fashion. I have been listening to this man for 57 minutes now and I don't really have a feel for his musical style or how he earns the "greatest guitarist of all time moniker". It all just blends together for me between all of the instrumentals that start out cool, intensify, then peel back in order to allow for Jimi's vocals to butt in. His compositions are very reminiscent of 50s/60s jazz, which is something I can understand the broad appeal of, but does not appeal to me as a general manager of disliking jazz music. The guitar performances are very confident, though they're far too subdued for my liking Because this album is so fockinggg long, I have taken to the lab in order to quantify the objective, perfect duration for an album across 14 releases that I hold up as favourites. The longest album on my list was an hour and 14 minutes, whereas the shortest was 33 minutes. The objective, scientifically perfect runtime for an album is 48 minutes and 57 seconds. Not far off from the hour mark, but it matters because it just does... Okay? I didn't notice until the last three tracks that I had been listening to this album entirely though my left ear - my other earbud died on me. Whoops. Uh, I'm not listening to this one again. Sozzo, Jimi. I will make sure my earbuds are fully charged and geared for music consumption when the next album rolls around. Those last three songs were a lot more engaging than the ones I listened to in left-ear mode.
Not for me. 1/5
Im not a huge Hendrix fan, and this album illustrates why. Although his guitar skills cannot be questioned, his composition can. Many of these tracks are compilations of wild, and unattached riffs. While many on their own are great, these tracks do not carry a melody. Sounds like random riffs strung together.
I actually HATE this
2/10

not bad don't really understand lyrics dosent really hyped me up just boring don't feel the beat 1 star cant really say nothing about it.
Do you like boring songs? This is it. In my opinion this is the most boring album I've heard on this website. One reason I think it is boring is because his voice is sooooooooooooo slow. Another reason is because the instruments just make my tired. So that is why you should not listen to this album.
I really don't like this album. It's just not good. I feel like it's too all over the place. I can't understand what he's saying, and I don't like his music. His voice is too whiny I feel like. I just don't like it. I recommend that you don't listen to this album.
It starts less psychedelic than Axis: Bold as Love. This one is not for me at all. .8/5
I don't recall enjoying this when I had to listen to it for the Rolling Stone top 100 and I didn't enjoy it this time around.
Not my kinda stuff
Boring
My husband loves this album. I'm not a Jimi Hendrix fan so I'm rating it lower. My nerves don't like the kind of electric guitar Jimi plays but I understand that he's very good on the guitar.
I just never liked Jimi.
Just not my thing. It was like nails on a chalkboard. I never liked his music, but never thought that I gave it a chance. This time I did and regret the hour out of my life. Yes, he's a great guitar player, but as for the completeness of a music offering, I just got nothing.
Sooo much electric guitar, lol! Not really my style
I don t know
While I appreciate the incredible skill and craftsmanship, it just unfortunately isn't for me. While I didn't enjoy any of it, I can absolutely understand and respect the talent and musicianship.
That was a slog to get through
Yuck!
This album was like torture. Me and Jimi have very different opinions on whether or not directional sounds should be in music.
Please, please make it stop.
Ew! Also I don’t want you to „make love to me in my sleep“. Ew!!!
this mf sounds like the suction thing at the dentist oh wow okay that was a harsh change up i dont know whats happening i know im only halfway through the first song but so far its a no from me ok this one sounds more promising kazoo??? idk this ones more groovy but im still not feeling it i feel like i'd get cancelled for all of this funky guitar i just cant see myself sitting down and being like "you know what i want to listen to? weird disjointed guitar with no song structure" nvm this bass and drums came in and kind of banged for a minute im not against this one i can see the appeal here ig i just feel like none of the members are clicking with eachother like i know they are but i dont hear it like that maybe im just dumb but thats my professional opinion. how long is this fucking song oh i think its ending now nvm solo time oh he kind of shredding tho wheres the emotion tho WHAT THE FUCK THIS SONG IS 15 MINUTES LONG WHY???????? IM BORED ALREADY AND THERES STILL NINE MORE MINUTES mfrn: :| drums i just know im gonna be a statistical outlier when i give this album a bad rating I THOUGHT IT WAS ENDING BUT THERES STILL FIVE MINUTES LEFT clapping again this is like in hs band when ppl would clap btwn movements oh its back to the first section i think idk i cant remember mmmm resolution oh he shredding again ok pop off this has GOT to be the end this is like a poorly planned fireworks display it ended ah silence ok lets try again fresh start beatles vocals listening to this is a chore this instrumental break is nice that guitar tone is gorgeous tho same with the bass its so ~smooth~ oh what the fuck is this how many songs are left i hate this im impartial im on reddit rn this is bluesy im not against it yet maybe i need to change my attitude some nice overdrive the man can fucking shred this is the best song so far (come on) fuck he can solo these drums sound weird ok some pick scraping this is bad im skipping to all along the watchtower bc apparently its good its not i did not enjoy this experience
Wish I could like it but I HATED it
