Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Listening to this album I get the feeling it would be so so much better as a live experience. I'm not sure the production lifts the sound to where it should be but you absolutely get the sense of Hendrix's brilliance. A lot of the songs drift off into improvised directions as if we're listening to a band rehearsing. I kinda like the looseness of that but sometimes it goes on for too long. 3- stars
i liked this generally, the guitar just sounds so great ... but i found myself wishing for a bit tighter editing to cut it down from more than an hour
Good album, if a little long
Good
Four really good songs. Deep blues, sixties pop and the heavy Hendrix guitar. Liked Watchtower, Voodoo Chile (both version, maybe the blues one a bit more) and Crosstown traffic. Middle of the album was, eh.
FAVO: All along the watch tower, Voodoo Child
Some bangers in here but often a bit too chaotic for my taste
Jimbo
Alright. Gets a bit boring but All Along The Watchtower is great.
Some great songs, but a mixed bag of styles.
I wanted to like this more than I did. Too samey across tracks, a bit noodly.
Wow can this man play a guitar makes slash look like a amateur not my sort of music always base on how many songs make it to my playlist and have to say although enjoyed won't listen again
Fine
Not his best work, but still good.
Yes
Just not my jam. I'm a worse person because of this opinion.
Seems pretty ahead of its time sonically, production techniques etc.
Jimi Hendrix is celebrated as one of the greatest and most influential electric guitar players in history. His experimentation and skill inspired generations of guitar players. "Electric Ladyland" is lauded as one of the greatest albums of all time. This double album contains a wide variety of styles, primarily rock but hitting some psychedelic, funk , blues, R&B, and pop. Understandably, the musicality may not be favored by everyone, however, this album's impact on music history cannot be understated. "All Along the Watchtower" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" are the highlights from this album which truly showcase Hendrix's electric guitar prowess.
Very good, but not something I'd go out of my way to listen to.
I liked it, but I don't think it was Jimi's best.
Coming to this list without much Hendrix experience, Axis: Bold As Love really blew me away. This one, not so much...
I love Hendrix, but he’s all over the place here. A couple of good deep cuts, classics. What’s with the applause?
There is a noticeable difference between the sound quality of older music and what would come along later. Electric Ladyland just doesn’t sound good and I there isn’t enough else there to compensate for me. Yes Jimi Hendrix and his band are talented musicians but the songs often seem to meander without purpose (Voodoo Chile being a good example of this) and lyrically Hendrix just doesn’t hold my attention; most of the album seems like people jamming and a lot of that jamming feels half arsed if I’m honest. I’m afraid I don’t get the appreciation of Jimi Hendrix’s body of work although I do understand his influence and legacy and am a fan of quite a few musicians who he has inspired. It’s probably a sound quality thing but I find other artists doing Jimi Hendrix more engaging than Hendrix himself. Does this lack of appreciation for the original art make me a musical philistine? That’s probably fair and I’m comfortable with that label. As far as ratings go I’m not inclined to listen again, but Hendrix is a way better guitarist than Eric ‘fret wanker’ Clapton and a much better lyricist that Paul Simon. Hollywood Hulk Hogan used Voodoo Child as his entrance music so Hendrix deserves a bonus point for that. 3/5
Haven't listened to the whole album all the way through in quite a while. That was nice!
There are some weaker numbers on this album - but also some excellent Hendrix songs. Not as good as Axis: Bold As Love.
# Playlist track - All Along the Watchtower # Notes - Hendrix is amazing but this album goes on and on a bit too long. - "Vodoo Chile" and "1983" are close to 15 minutes each! - There is a very specific mood and circumstance when you want to chill and listen to endless solos, but those are rare to come by. For most people the album ends up hard to approach and unlikely to be enjoyable as a whole. - Cool gems like Gypsy Eyes and All Along the Watchtower still amazing, tho.
This album is pretty good and has my favorite Hendrix song, All Along the Watchtower. Not all of the tracks on here are great, but no bad tracks either.
Seminal piece of art.
A few all time classics here, and the rest is good guitar play that fades into the background for me. No doubt that Jimi Hendrix was very influential though. Imagine what he could've done if he'd lived to become old.
A classic
Amazing guitar!
it's good but i struggle to get excited for it. good background music
Realizing I’m not a Hendrix person. I recognize the talent, but just don’t see myself listening to it willingly.
Sperimentale nel 1968. Acido. Un altro mondo.
I know I should rate it higher but other than the obvious standouts I found the album just okay. Blasphemy. I know.
Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are classics, Space Trucker
Really fun but lots of filler between the hits.
Hard to get used to the seemingly chaotic nature at first. Most musicians have their songs build to the vocals of the chorus for him this is all building to the guitar wherebye he expresses himself. Voodoo Chile giving ultra blues vibe, seemingly no structure but it works. Found I was losing interest after the first few songs and the album slows down for the last bit. Can definitely respect his talent as potentially the greatest guitarist of all time but the music as a whole just not for me… ok the final three tracks bring it back for me also listening with headphones instead of car speaker make a huge difference with it being stereo. Was teetering on a 2/5 because the middle really lost me but the end saved it. Also feel like listening will stoned and chilled out probably would improve the experience not while stressed mid day and travelling to and from Costco.
Never listened to this album, though I certainly knew most songs. I'd have been okay shedding some, but then a super bluesy one was a surprise and a sax stood out in another, each I had never heard.
Classic blues covers. Voodoo Chile and child showing what's to come for Jimi. Great introduction album to Jimi. Explosive in parts.
Un poco rollo. No me ha llamado la atención.
I’m really struggling to rate this album, because I know how successful it was, and how influential Jimi Hendrix is as a musician. I just really didn’t love this album. It was long and it wasn’t cohesive. Every other song sounded like it was performed by a different band. I can respect the versatility they have as performers, but damn. I also felt like some of the songs didn’t feel fully finished or thought out. Some of the songs just felt like a collection of random sounds without much melody. I suppose that’s the nature of the genre, but it isn’t for me. A 2 star album, but I’ll grant it a bonus point for being so influential.
Some pretty great songwriting! Everything about the album was great for its time. It’s not quite my thing and I don’t think it aged as well as some other albums but I respect it.
He's good on the guitar thing but the songs aren't that good.
Usually I’m not a fan of guitar heavy music, but this was so groovy that it was hard not to enjoy it as background music. Fave song was Have You Ever Been (To Electric Lady Land).
Good, I didn't recognize a single track.
Kind of trippy, not bad but not my favorite either. I could listen to a few songs on the album but probably wouldn't care if I heard the whole thing again.
I'm having a difficult time deciding my rating. First, being Hendrix, I feel like I should rate higher but honestly, I'm not into endless guitar riffs. So I thought maybe a middling 3. But would I listen to this again, no. I like All Along the Watchtower but again, not I'm going to get excited about it if it plays on a random shuffle playlist. So maybe a 2? But it's Hendrix so maybe a 3?
I like and the Gods Made Love and I kind of like Come On, I would like Gypsy Eyes if it had different lyrics
This was fine.
3.4 per track excluding first track.
Great song writing, but the rambling, jam-band improv sessions take a lot of wind out of the sails and make this album struggle to shine.
Jimi Hendrix it sounds like Jimi Hendrix. He's good at doing Jimi Hendrix and being rock and roll hall of famer, but I found myself done with the album about 30 minutes into it. I did like the kazoo on Crosstown Traffic. That might've been my favorite track just because the kazoo kept me interested enough to appreciate how good the song was.
More experiemental than expected. Not sure I like guitar solos enough for this.
Banger ending
I enjoyed this for what it was, but it’s not my favorite kind of music.
Half the album oké, the otter half not very special
Pretty funky.
I was excited to see this pop up. I've never given it a true listen from start to finish. Gave it a couple good runs but, overall, I expected more and didn't get it.
I always like some Jimi.
a few all timer killer tracks, way too much chaff
As with all legacy musicians, I respect what they have contributed towards the progression of music and art, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to connect with me. Electric Ladyland has its moments: “Voodoo Chile” and “1983” are cool, lengthy jams, and I would put “Burning of the Midnight Lamp” on a best of playlist, but beyond that, I’d need to devote more attention to it to see if it really is a timeless classic or just overhyped by time and circumstance (his death).
Great album, definitely a journey he takes you on. This is the first time I’ve listened to a full Jimi Hendrix album. Nice variety of song styles and of course awesome guitar playing. Not a huge fan of the vocals, because they feel far away and kind of like an afterthought but overall, feels like a true classic.
'All along to the Watchtower' is a banger!
It seems on first listen a little unfocused but it's an amazing, passionate accomplishment. The "hits" from the first two albums of the Experience aren't really there, the amazing "Cosstown Traffic", "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" and Dillon cover "All Along the Watchtower" excepted. And, "Still Raining, Still Dreaming" is a great deep cut surprise. It's more sprawling psychedelic epics punctuated with short, experimental tracks. Amazingly, as a noted long song hater, it's the epics that I really dig. During the 15 minutes of "Voodoo Chile" and 13 of "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)"I never got bored. Some of the psychedelic trappings feel dated, but it is over fifty years old, after all. The guitar (and the often underrated rhythm section) still rock.
I can see how many people enjoy the music but for me I need to be in the mood for the style to be enjoyable. Its not something I can just listen to willy nilly.
Handgemachtes Bluesgedudel.
I'm like, meh about this. I like the overall vibe, the guitar is obvi v impressive, but it's a little too.. diffuse(?) for me. 3/5. All along the watch tower is a brill track.
Feels like heresy to give this 3 stars but it is just so bloated and meandering
Fun guitar stuff, nice to listen to. I liked crosstown traffic a lot. Revolutionary for it's time, but not for mine.
Lots of noise on the album. Jimi's talent is undeniable. Voodoo Child makes it worth it getting through the album.
First proper listen to Hendrix, very funky and has shine interesting tracks. Can understand the appeal and look forward to listening to more.
Ehhhh, det er ok. En del kleine tekster. Første halvdel er bedre!
I liked this album, but for the mystique surrounding all things Hendrix I was expecting to love it. Especially with Jimi as a local legend and fellow GHS alumni, I assumed it was going to be the greatest album of all time and it was merely good.
Good rock and roll, but it is too much of a jam band feel for my tastes. So many of the songs just drag on and on.
Good songs with fantastic guitar work. Beginning and end of album are great but has a lot of filler. Also not a huge fan of his vocal meter but still some great stuff
Voodoo Chile is fire, but it loses me at the end, especially the Merman track.
Really solid; not totally my taste and it’s longer than I’d prefer, but I liked it a lot.
I get it. 3.5.
Definitely more fuzz than I prefer, and can get a little jammy, but good rock n roll.
Jimi is always impressive 2/5
That Jimi guy sure can play, but the highlights on here just blow everything else away so it feels like it's 80% filler. Ends on a super high note, but I wish the rest was as good as those two songs or Voodoo Chile.
Not as good as its reputation
It's a very raw album. Lots of Jimi on guitar - obviously the highlight - but it kinda drags on and I feel like the songs start to bleed together
My poor opinion of Jimi Hendrix remains unchanged after having sat through this lengthy LP. At least some of the more atmospheric moments make the frantically-panned guitar solos a little bit interesting.
This one is alright but I’m a much bigger fan of Axis. Gonna down vote cause I like Axis more.
A bit too twiddly for me, but I liked a handful of tracks. Favourite tracks: Crosstown Traffic, Little Miss Strange, Come On (Let the Good Times Roll), House Burning Down.
Pretty one dimensional actually, still bloody amazing atmosphere and great listen. I understand why people love him.
Lots of long guitary stuff
his music is always fun, just gets a little long listening to it all in one sitting
Listening to the whole thing, I think I have to give it a 3. Obviously some classics, but also some stuff I'm not that in to. Will I listen to again: 40%
Not my cup of tea.
very nice. a classic.
I have never listened to Hendrix much more than the hits and the occasional same live footage that gets played a lot. Listening to a whole album is interesting, particularly a double album. Hendrix is obviously working on a level above most of his contemporaries. This album is a bit all over the place, but everything absolutely has it's own merit even if it doesn't mesh well together. Fun record to listen to, if overly long and meandering.
Always thought Jimi Hendrix was a bit overrated, and listening through this album doesn’t change things for me. He’s got an iconic sound, the guitar work is tight, and there are some great tracks (e.g. all along the watchtower). But I don’t think there’s the consistency required for an excellent score. Definitely liked some of the more soundscape style sections, but as a whole there weren’t enough individual tracks that I enjoyed.
This was a really good album that I could put on in the background just to hear the guitar playing Top Tracks: 1) All Along The Watchtower 2) Voodoo Chile
3.8 just for all along the watchtower. I really thought I'd like this album more knowing that song was on here
It was a good listen, jimi is a good guitarist
Ok+
Expecting to see lots of Seattle pride reviews
It can’t be disputed the impact Hendrix made on popular culture as a black, rock guitarist but this album is one hell of a ramshackle of an extended jam with a couple of classics too. And do you get really irritated when people mix up Voodoo Chile with Child (Slight Return.)?
Of course the guitar is impressive. A little more blues-y than I expected. But expect for the few we'll known songs I didn't want to re-listen to the other ones
Great guitar. Kinda long. This is an album that you will zone out doing whatever and when you come back too you’ll think “huh this album us still playing”
Overrated
Not bad. This guy might be good at guitar
guitar solo/10
A bit masturbatory.
This is definitely an album I think you gotta sit down and listen too, didn’t really do too much for me while I was out and about commuting or whatever in fact I actually found it hard to focus on it maybe like it was too much going on? but when I was able to sit down and listen to it it was awesome. This definitely had a more rock sound than his other albums and tbh I found it a little long. Fave songs: Gypsy eyes, 1983, house burning, voodoo Chile, all along the watchtower.
Crosstown traffic guitar riffs are dope Album overall was cool. If I’m in the mood for some blues scales this is definitely the place to go. A lot of guitar solos and blues riffs. Some nice working music, but nothing I would be hyped about putting on
The double album. Some strong material, lots of filler, experimentation, an interesting listen but doesn't grab me as well as I want it to. In all, a modest positive that makes me want to visit/re visit the previous albums.
I was expecting something very different, listened to it countless time, but I can't grasp it, sometimes I'm excited, sometimes indifferent. I'll leave a balanced rating and keep thinking about it
It's funny how your music interests change. If I were to rate this 10 years ago, I would have given it a 4/5... But honestly, now that I listen to music differently, and my idea of what is jaw dropping or genre defining, has drastically evolved, this album just isn't what I remembered it being. We all know there is no parallel when it comes to how incredible, influential, and masterful Jimi Hendrix is on the guitar. Without a doubt, a 5/5 guitarist. His vocals are lacking though. Very inconsistent. Some songs they are very well fitting... Others, not so much. A lot of random noises in this album done with the guitar, which might be the first ever a guitar has been used in this sort of way. But it's just that... Noise. I didn't really care for it. Didn't add a lot to songs. The drumming in most songs on this album is very good. The lyrics don't really stand the test of time. I don't know... I love Jimi Hendrix. Or at least at one point in my life I did. Curious to see how I feel about other albums. Revisit? Maybe.. But doubtful.
It's good but I feel like I should be more excited about this than I am. I think the problem with some of these classic records is that I'm so familiar with the big songs and then with things that have referenced these records. I think this would be so much different if I heard this when it was new, and all the ideas presented here were new.
Let's go
Really interesting mix of Jimi’s guitar work, blues and very 60s songs. Crosstown Traffic, All along the Watchtower, Come On are major hits.
Love Jimmy
I only listened to a few songs, was too busy otherwise. But not really my style
Was an alright album
Hendrix was clearly brilliant, but this album is kind of meh. I feel a few classics shine, but the rest just blends together.
There are some classics on here
Is this extremely slow burn of an album worth it in the end for All Along The Watchtower and Voodoo Child? It's so close but just barely not.
I always hear about Hendrix being a legendary guitar player, but admittedly I haven't explored much of his catalog. Crosstown Traffic sampled on 98Rock for their traffic reports. Good song. Don't like the two tracks that are 13+ minutes. Voodoo Child is solid.
Listened to part of it; with each Hendrix album, the noise factor goes up a notch or two. That's why I like the first Experience album the best.
- started hot and ended hot - some songs were just a little long and drawn out for me - guitar playing is incredible
3.25
ok. i didnt really enjoy it that much
I knew this was my least favorite of Jimis 3 studio albums but I actually could barely stand this one. Just so much noodling. Never been a fan of All Along the Watchtower either.
I obviously have a lot of respect for Hendrix but I've never been a fan of his music. A lot of people consider Electric Ladyland to be his masterpiece and while I will certainly ackowledge that it's an ambitious album, it does get tiring after a while. It's still mostly blues rock with a production and effects that hints at psychedelia, but I don't find the mix to be particularly successful to be honest.
Listened to this sorta passively while driving to and from target with lillie today so take my review lightly I know this was like absolutely Groundbreaking shit when this came out but now it's just sorta sounds like what allpeople have been trying to sound like on guitar for the last 60 years. But still really good
Long, but mostly unique styled classic sound
I know and understand the cultural impact that Jimi Hendrix had on rock and guitar, but I've never had the chance to actually listen to him. It amazes me that this album came out in 1968, it just feels so far ahead of its time. However, it isn't really my shtick, I think. It feels a little sloppy a lot of the time, like the drums, bass, vocals and guitar are all playing different time signatures. It might be some of the blues or jazz influence there, where I am looking for a tighter form of rock. I'm not the biggest fan of Jimi's voice, it's not bad, just again not my thing, I think. Jimi's tone and playing on the guitar is spectacular though, and the recording is fairly high quality with nice dynamic range and soundstage width. All around, would listen to again.
Great to listen to in the background, with the already famous songs the standouts
Crosstown Traffic and All Along the Watchtower are Alfa. 2 dumb ambient type songs, two 13+ minute songs that should be 4 minutes long. Ez 4 if it was 40 minutes long. Size matters.
Half God tier tracks, half random jam sessions.
Props to Jimi for giving us the most perfect version of Bob Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower. And for shredding the absolute fuck out of his guitar in the most radical way. He’s just not my rock deity of choice. He’s a cool cat, I dig his sound, but I never seek it out.
My least favourite of the Jimi Hendrix albums in the book. It’s too long, unfocused and there’s lots of needless guitar wanking. Side D saves the day though, with ‘Still Raining, Still Dreaming’, ‘House Burning Down’, ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’ among the strongest cuts on the album. Meanwhile you could remove ‘Voodoo Chile’ (which is essentially ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’ just longer and more boring) and ‘1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)’ and you would lose nothing from the album. A frustrating listen then.
Liked
cool guitar and drums👍
👍
The drums and the guitar was really really great. It was cool 👍 7/10
It sticks in your throat like an uncircumcised cock covered in glitter. A real romp that made me gag and throw up all over Fernando's new slippers. He's not speaking to me now. What a sour puss. He'll come round when he wants his bellend to be chewed on this evening. Just you wait.
good vibes but few songs really made an impact. the ones i liked the most i knew going into it. all along the watchtower, though a cover, is seriously one of the greatest songs from this era. favorites: all along the watchtower, crosstown traffic
Still lots of good here, but maybe felt a little more stretched out and a little less cohesive than his other couple albums we’ve had so far. The runtime probably pushed that envelope a bit, though there are some classics that remain a treat to listen to. Three and a half. Fave track: Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Jimi you're a good singer buddy, sing a little bit more. The 14 minute songs were brutal, but his 4 minute ones at the tail end were redeeming.
Can sound dated to me. Naive
This starts cool and then it sounds repetitive to me.
In its sort I guess more than brilliant
Not my favorite, but still enjoyable
2nd listen. I just don’t really like Jimi Hendrix’s music. It sounds kind of droning and there are a lot of instrumentals.
It was fine. Good guitar playing 3/5
Guitar and singing with some drums and bass
Highlights: "Crosstown Traffic," "Electric Ladyland," "All Along The Watchtower," "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" Probably not much development from the '67 albums to this. You know: dom7#9! Wah-wah! A sexy wizard gave me a moon crystal that gives me psychic love power! Lots of interminable saggy spots here over 75 minutes. However, with how much play his bluesier stuff gets, it's good to hear so many melodic psych hooks in that same great univibe strat tone. It's easy to imagine Hendrix becoming a glam guy if he'd made it through the '70s. Didn't realize how much effective use of unison there would be here, and the bass was really dynamic for some of the openers. Trim this down to half its size and you have a perfect album.
Some really good songs on here, but man did this album not need to be 75 minutes long
bien qsy. 7/10
Some great Hendrix hits, but holy wow is this a long album.
Great but becomes more overly self-indulgent as time passes.
3/5 Ugh. This was a hard one to review. I liked some of the full on rock and roll, but it dragged on and on. And one song, "Voodoo Chile," was a little rapey. I really want to like Jimi Hendrix and be a cool kid, but I'm not won over yet...
I really enjoyed the previous Hendrix album this challenge dropped and although there were more recognisable hits here, it was too long and convoluted for me. Don't get me wrong, he's an amazing guitarist and everything, but there was waaaay too much fat needing trimming on this bloated opus. I hope that the inevitable next Jimi Hendrix album is more like the previous one.
I don't think all the songs are hits, only a couple I really enjoy, but Jimi is a guitar freak. It's worth a listen at least once. I just think I like the man and talent more than the music. (Last 2 songs bang, though.)
Much like the recent Tom Waits album I feel this would be more enjoyable in a certain state of mind. That said I did enjoy it. Crosstown Traffic and 1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be) were favourites and All Along The Watchtown is such a standout track.
He has brilliant moments but I’m not going to pretend everything he touched was gold. Too long. Would’ve been an incredible experience back in the day.
why is this so long? still great though. everything jimi touches is gold. sometimes can be a dredge but overall is varied enough and the performance is truly electric so it's ok. best tracks: all along the watchtower, voodoo child, crosstown traffic
Other than the hits, nothing grabbed me as much as I thought. Needs a repeat listen deffo. Sticking with a 3 but I do think it could be slightly unfair as it was broken up in how I listened
Absolutely rippin’ an’ lickin’ an’ riffin’ as always Sot Have You Ever Been Crosstown Traffic Voodoo Chile Gypsy eyes All along the watchtower Voodoo child 3/5
Wasn't feeling it
Good album not in my musical tastes
Decent not my fav jimi album
Guitar man does guitar stuff
Jimi shreds. An album with as many hits as misses. His tragedy, resulting in too little music from a genius, means that we all hold up what little we do have as precious. I hate to bag on this because it's freaking Jimi Hendrix but honestly if he had lived another 50 years this album would be completely forgotten.
Very very ehhhhh
Cool
loef
This album has a few absolutely amazing songs on it, but I'd need to be wayyyyyy stoned to want to listen to the whole thing front to back again.
guitarrita
Talented
Seems like an Album that you had to be there
Jimi Hendrix is a very amazingly talented guitarist and for what it's worth the jams are legendary but sitting through 75 minutes of it is a little too much for me for me to call an experience I could thoroughly enjoy. 7/10
I like Jimi Hendrix, but I have a hard time with this album because it is so long and meandering.
Good vibes and great classic rock album

Electric Ladyland is the third and final album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience before Jimi Hendrix's death two years later in 1970. This commercially successful psychedelic rock double album confused critics at release, but has since been viewed as Hendrix's best work. It reached number one on the Billboard 200 Top Albums chart just six weeks after release - Hendrix's only album to do so - and remained there for two weeks. The popular single - a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" - is a masterpiece and sold well in its own right. This album is a classic in both the rock and psychedelic genres, and can be argued as the most important album of rock music. I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing album, but it was bittersweet knowing that Jimi Hendrix would leave this physical plane so quickly after its release - robbing the world of successive incredible rock albums. RIP Jimi Hendrix - a rock & roll guitar god.
Did not like the live nature, even though I usually do. Long version of some songs was ok. Audio quality was compromised due to the nature of the recording.
Un poco rollo. No me ha llamado la atención.
It's alright
Probably was more groundbreaking at the time. It's fine
I can dig it
Not going to lie, Hendrix is the kind of guitarist who discloses his best tricks very early on and so once you’ve heard it once you don’t have to hear it too many more times. I also take umbrage at the psychedelic label attached to his music - trippy delta blues this may be, but 13th Floor Elevators it ain’t. That being said there’s a lot to like about this album. Leaving aside the monstrous ending, there are some great jams here (“Crosstown Traffic” and “Little Miss Strange”) and they actually tend to be songs where Hendrix’s noodling take a back seat. There is a great deal of unfocused meandering licks on this record, but he always pulls it back. The album length is often derided for precisely this reason, but there are occasional long tracks which justify their presence on the record - the sprawling 1983 is my favourite track on the album, which definitely gives space for Hendrix’s more experimental (and, dare I say, properly psychedelic) tendencies. On the whole, a great record.
Raw and passionate. A few new songs and a couple of classics. Explains well what is awesome from Jimy Hendrix.
First track was strange. Why is the first track on an album almost always filler? Crosstown Traffic is an absolute banger. It’s weird that I’ve never actually listened to a Hendrix album.
Kiistatta yksi historian kovimmista kepittäjistä, mutta omaan makuun turhankin paljon kikkailua.
So much raw talent for a debit albulm. Sounds like the beginning of what is to come. Voodoo Child is my favorite.
Classic. Solid guitar skills. Perfect at 4 am.
Solid.
Yeah I know it’s special guitar playing, but just doesn’t do much for me.
Fav songs: - 1983... (A Mermaid I Should Turn To Be) - All Along The Watchtower
A harsh 3/5. I like jimi's blues and rock but can never get the psychedelic stuff
Favorite songs were Crosstown Traffic and House Burning down. Voodoo Chile was too long and too bluesy for me. Nothing else really stood out. Some of the instrumentals were pretty cool, especially the guitar. But then, it's Jimi Hendrix.
No Jimi on Youtube music.....
Cross Town Traffic, All Along the Watchtower, and Voodoo Child (Slight Return) are rightly classics, and there is a lot of other stuff I really liked on here. However, it is very sprawling and the moments of genius get lost amongst the rest of the atmospheric and varied album. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Date listened: 31/05/22
Crosstown traffic is a highlight for me.
Can't help but wonder what would have come next. I'm more familiar with the earlier two albums, this is the first time I listened to Electric Ladyland all the way through. As others observed, it does meander and lack focus, but still a great listen.
I love Hendrix and his impact on rock and roll, but some of his tracks on this album are a bit too artsy and out there for me.
It's kinda crazy that there are only two songs on this entire thing that I really 'like', in that I really respond to and I can't help but get into - Crosstown Traffic and Watchtower. And yet every track on here grabs me.
After loving the other 2 Hendrix albums this is a bit more as I associate with him - glimpses of brillance but overlong guitar solos and "trippyness" to the detriment of the overall music. still enjoyable 3.4
I can see how I should like this more but I think its one of those time and place albums. Maybe if I was a bit older (or around) in those days and had an older bother constantly playing it, forcing it into my brain then it would get a 5. But I struggle to listen to full album now. So its a 3 for me.
I really liked how the album started, but the rest I was pretty neutral on.
I enjoyed this very much, but like so many jam band albums I know, the songs lacked a distinctiveness that’s needed in my mind for a 4 or 5 star album. There are exceptions of course (Voodoo Chile, for instance, and I was captured by 1983…(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)).
I really enjoy Hendrix, but this album meandered around too much for me. Some great riffs and jams but didn't feel cohesive enough for a better score.
Thing about geniuses like Jimi Hendrix who thrive on improvisation… sometimes it’s lightning in a bottle and sometimes it just sounds like noodling. There’s a lot of this that could have used a better plan, tighter writing, or maybe a few more takes or something. But man, when it works it’s so damn good. Voodoo Child, Voodoo Chile, and 1983 could be an album on their own, almost. And then it would be a really tight, great one!
There are some classic songs on this album for sure but overall I got a little restless listening to it straight through. (There are a few filler songs and two jams longer than 13 minutes!) I can’t help but feel the album could have packed a bigger punch with some editing. But I’ll confess I gave this a close listen on a plane and maybe I didn’t do it justice. I’ll try listening to it more. The bluesy numbers would probably benefit from being played loud in the house where they can stretch out some more. This feels more like speakers music than headphones music. Even the less than great songs have killer guitar shredding on them though. The band’s brand of hard blues still sounds awesome today. Jimi Hendrix was a hell of a performer and considering this was his last album, maybe it’s no so bad to have more than you need here. 🙌🎸
Pretty boring. The hits are great, but most of it is self indulgent. He was an interpreter, a showman, and a guitar genius. But he needed to be in a band with some decent songwriters.
This album has some great moments. Crosstown Traffic, for instance, is not only the best thing Hendrix recorded, but one of the best tracks EVER recorded. And there are some interesting sounds and techniques on here, notwithstanding Hendrix’s playing itself. But this doesn’t really hang together as an album, and there is too much extend jamming in places for my taste. There are too many different styles and the production doesn’t pull the tr=hreads together well enough. Hit and miss, and would have made a much better, selectively-edited, single album.
Tricky one. Some absolutely great tunes but not one to listen to too often. Long. Some tunes just rambled, as they do.
Searing guitar, but a bit of a ramble. Deserves it's place in the 1001.
I'm not going to say anything about Jimi that hasn't already been said. Dude can shred, and some people will enjoy it and others will only hear noise. I'm somewhere in between. I can appreciate the skills necessary to create this sound, but at the same time, it's a bit heavy on the ears. Found myself glad when the 1:15 of album was over.

Disappointing.
A mixed bag. All the classics are great, naturally. A couple of other good tracks, but I just get bored when he goes all psychedelic and weird. Stick to blues Jimi.
Aaargh! Surely this was a no brainer 5 star album. But listening to it it's so uneven. Some tracks are legendary, some borderline unlistenable, many just a bit flat. I'm disapointed Mr Hendrix.
Is it possible to be good to a fault at playing the guitar?
* Decent, Classic Hendrix. Could do with remastering.
He's a great guitarist but I never got into any of his songs. Thought it might have been an age thing but nah, still don't really get all the love for Hendrix. Call me a heretic.

Wasn't sure what to expect aside from All Along The Watchtower. I was pleasantly surprised to hear all the soul/R&B influence, but then the 10 minute guitar solos came in and wiped the goodwill that generated
Disappointing
My first Hendrix or any kind of 70’s(?)rock like this. I added all of these songs to my playlist because I enjoyed them all but I can see me never coming back to this album.
3/5
Didn't like it as much as "Are you Experienced?". This is a little more bluesy less rock. I probably wouldn't have even given it a 3 if it wasn't for the brilliance of his version of All Along the Watchtower
Its Jimi. I have not listened to an album of his from beginning to end, only greatest hits. While i cant say anything new stood out, it was consistant and didnt need to skip around. solid 3
Honestly, I much prefer "Are You Experienced" over this album. It's a bit too bluesy for my taste, however the stand-out tracks are essential listens. This album did not resonate with me as much I was hoping/expecting. Good record, but ultimately disappointing given how much I enjoyed his debut.
Honestly not terribly impressed by anything on here besides All Along The Watchtower
Seminal but too long
Solid guitar stuff, love crosstown traffic
3/5 good but I don't get Hendrix :(
So, I know Hendrix is amazing and influential, etc. But this music doesn't do much for me most of the time. IDK why....
average. not remotely impressed.
meh, typical jimmy
meh its ok

I know it's blasphemus but I don't really enjoy this album. Not the kind of music that draws me in. I'm not a guitar player so many of the subtleties of Hendrix's talents are lost on me. All Along the Watchtower is great 3.5 stars
Fat moving and wildly inventive but oh my days the long version of Voodoo Chile drags like it's got concrete boots on.
Solid listen
The songs you've heard before are incredible. The deep cuts on this are pretty boring for a modern-day listener I'd say.
Meh ok
Enjoyed a few songs a LOT, but found it to be more raw than I prefer.
I'm not in love with Hendrix in general. the album as a whole is like a 2.5-3 but along the watchtower brings it up to 3.5
This is quite a mish-mash of blues, soul and psychedelic rock. It’s like Jimi’s "Exile on Main Street." Some of it would be hard to identify as Hendrix, although the crazy (and varied) guitar work running throughout the album would be a clue. I could see a guitar player going crazy over this. I remember Rolling Stone voting All Along the Watchtower as the best cover of all time. It’s 4-movement guitar solo that lasts only 1 minute has always been a favourite of mine. Cross-town Traffic and the Slight Return version of Voodoo Child are great too. I'm leaning towards a 4 but I gave his debut album a 4 and this one is less consistent.
It's been many years since I've listened to Hendrix. I really enjoy the rockier moments (like "Cross Town Traffic"), and I enjoy the blues elements as well as the far-out spacey stuff. However, most of the 60s poppy psychedelia moments show their age quite badly and the olde worlde mystical themes come off as a bit twee. The album also doesn't really hand together as a continuous listen and feels longer than the actual 75min runtime. I listened to the album three time before rating, because I want to enjoy and see what other people love. However, I find the many great moments are tarnished by the weak point. 3.5*
I think a bit like Disraeli Gears the good songs are overplayed and there is a lot of filler in between. Also marked down because it was quite hard to find and listen to.
Listening to Jimi Hendrix always makes me feel inferior because honestly I just don't get what all the buzz is about.
I liked. Would I listen again voluntarily? Prob not.
Jimmy Hendrix is not my style. I find it too psychedelic.
It's Jimi Hendrix but I really only liked a few songs out of them all.
Altri tempi! Canzoni tagliate di botto, batterie in controfase, fade out improbabili.
// Favs: ...And The Gods Made Love / Voodoo Chile Score: Decent to Strong 3
One of the only worthwhile boomer-coom 3.9
DRINK MY WINE 🍷
Seemed alright, I mean we were playing gta at the time so I didn’t fully listen to a decent amount. I don’t think I’m usually a fan of really long guitar solos and I guess Hendrix is the king of that so it was never gonna do great for me. Generous 3 star cus it seemed funky (in a good way)
Mixed bag Better music than lyrics 'Come On' - good surprise Gods made love/Turn tides - just ambient noise
Lots of respect for Jimi but I don't know if I can listen to him solo for an hour straight... UPDATE: Couldn't do it, skipped right through to Watchtower and then turned it off lol
Must've been revolutionary when it came out, and I can see why. Very much enjoyed the guitars and overall musicality but I doubt I'd be dying to listen to this album again
awesome vibe. Crazy guitar skills
Look man, you can listen to Jimi but you can’t hear him. There’s a difference man. Just because you’re listening to him doesn’t mean you’re hearing him.
I love 'all along the watchtower' (Dylan prefers Hendrix's version than his own, I'm undecided) and it's obvious that Hendrix is a virtuoso but I still found it overall a little boring.
An iconic album but not my jam.

ccool
Obv great for what it is, but I don't think I'm ever going to be a Jimi Hendrix person
6/10
Un poco rollo. No me ha llamado la atención.
Beautiful álbum, I liked most All along the Watchtower
Temas buenos, pero demasiado psicodélico.
Great guitar. Album was ok. I don't think Hendrix was a complete composer, so it felt very one-sided.
Some bangers, men tråkigt emellanåt
I like some of this okay and other of it not as well. I feel a little guilty about that because I’m sure some of it is just cultural. However, even though I don’t really like electric guitar that much, I can appreciate how impressive Hendrix’s guitar skills are.
Felt ad-libbed like freewheelin Bob Dylan
all along the voodoo chile
Crosstown (bus!)
Interesting. But at the risk of coming across as blasphemous, I really don't see much reason to listen again.
All Along The Watchtower and Vodo Child are all time classics for sure

Good listen. Though had to go with a live version as couldn't find it for free
