Reviews (page 11 of 13)

I am shocked that I'm saying this... Felt a little clunky. It's been decades since I listened to this straight through. Yes it has multiple stone cold classics, but also a lot of fill. My idea for what this was vs what it actually is it's the reason it's 3 stars.

Man, this guy can really play guitar.

Masterful electric guitar, my enjoyment of which was limited by my general ambivalence toward long guitar riffs. This is something that deserves a couple more listens though...

General Thoughts: - HAAAAAVE YOU EEEEEVER BEEEEEN - I know a few tracks off this (Watchtower, Slight Return, Have You Ever Been, Chile) but I’ve listened to their other two albums way more, I worshipped Axis in my younger years. - Voodoo Child Slight Return is the first song I learned to play when I got my wah pedal forever ago. - I’m looking forward to some fun songs by the man himself. Some shreddy fuzzy psychy shit ya know. Maybe ill hear something new idk, trying to stay open to his music despite his legendary status (which would typically make me more critical) - Read on the album bio it was a hedonsitic production process, and that this album has hints of afrofuturism, which was coming around at that time. Kind of an interesting perspective. - seems like an album you throw on because its what you have not bc you picked it. bloated fs, you could've cut the run time in half. - If you're on apple music, bonus footage is worth watching. They isolate some tracks and show you what was going on. Track by Track: - And The Gods Made Love: I like a noisy intro, getting me set up well. interesting sounds pursued here - Have You Ever Been: such a fucking chiller of a song. sing this to myself once in a while. Delivery kinda reminds me of Bootsy Collins here. Nice contrast to the intro - Crosstown Traffic: reads as typical JHE fare here. I could listen to this in a dive bar, upbeat and rocking. Fun Fact: The guitar player for Traffic (Dave Mason) does background vox, of 'dear mr fantasy' fame. - Voodoo Chile: Seeing a theme in this one where he sings and plays the notes George Benson style. Fan of that. Holy shit this is an extended jam I did not expect. nice way to break up the quicker tracks. Nice reminder of what he does best, soulfully shred all over the place. LOOOVE the clapping I think its so funny, you know the engineer was pissed about that. LET THE BOYS PLAY! - Little Miss Strange: Love the guitar harmonies, very Blue Sky coded. Seems like theyre trying to do some laurel canyon ts w the vox performances. Kind of a weird production switch at the end, im imaging they wanted a diff take and this was the only solid one they got. Production loses some points there. - Long Hot Summer Night: pocket. Rescue! Rescue! - Come On (Let the Good Times Roll): Cover alert (?). band is very tight and you can tell theyve played this a ton. - Gypsy Eyes: Hate that oscillating at the beginning, thought it was the drums at first. Weird phase thing going on with the vox, which im sure is intentional but im not a fan. Appreciate the tricks tried here but i can do without it. - Burning Of The Midnight Lamp: uhhhhhhh, the organ sounds kinda cool i just dont rly know what were trying to do here. - Rainy Day, Dream Away: I guess so, very loose. it sounds like hes trying to figure guitar parts as they go along. key change dont do it for me. - 1983: I kind of like the push and pull of the jam, you have to be patient with it. lot of taste in here. like the dolphin sounds at the end - Moon, Turn The Tides: alright then, nice transition but dont know why it had to be its own track. - Still Raining: i didnt need this to come back tbh. expansion on a 13 minute idea isnt needed here imho. - House Burning Down: Im just waiting to ge tot Watchtower at this point. - Watchtower: makes me think of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for some reason. no denying this one. come and dig my earth. - Voodoo Child Slight Return: still iconic fortunately, I have always loved his tone here.

Surprised by the variety of styles in this album. Rock, blues, swing ish, psych. Didn’t notice a theme which I both appreciate and made it an odd listening experience. Overall a fan

Personally I think Hendrix is overrated, but the album is historically important.

an obvious classic, I heard most of these songs when I was very young and liked them quite a lot, although I haven't found much reason to revisit them as I've been more focused on discovering new sounds since then. I like the extended version of Voodoo Chile and Crosstown Traffic brings back memories. I wouldn't call anything here dated, but at the same time it's very much of its time, particularly the lyrics and vocal style.

I haven't done enough drugs to appreciate Jimi Hendrix at a macro level, but I do enjoy individual songs. Obviously "All Along the Watchtower" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" are incredible. Other songs suffer from a lack of focus and sort of endless droning on. However, there's no denying Hendrix's talent and the cultural significance of this album.

Feels quite like a jam session in the studio than an album. Love All Along The Watchtower

Pretty good

Did this need to be a double LP?

I might a too soft on this one. I feel like it's a two but might be giving it a three because of Jimi's guitar work. The album itself isn't that good, I think the songs are scattered throughout the album and two songs are way to long and lost my attention.

A few I recognize. A couple classics. Not crazy about the overall album.

Jimi Hendrixin kitarataiturointia, sen tyylin kyllä tunnistaa. Tää on vähän sellaista fiilistely musiikkia. Parhaat: All Along the Watchtower, Voodoo Child

Some absolutely incredible songs mixed with some really bad songs.

I know it's heresy, but I'm always inclined against a musician that's considered untouchable by boomers. The album is too long and too weak in spots to be anything other than good. Jimi was an innovative guitar player, for sure, that's undeniable. Whether he actually wrote good songs is more debatable.

Virtuosity and some great tunes but a bit too self indulgent.

Wonderful album.

Obviously a classic but had started getting a little too bluesy for mine.

Too cool for school

Decent

Really liked All along the Watchtower and Voodoo Chile but overall I didn't find it interesting, and I didn't feel emotionally involved. I also, strangely perhaps, thought that some of these songs sounded like others of his. I also do not think he is the greatest guitarist of all time (soz Rolling Stone mag)

Well, right off the bat I had to double check to make sure I was indeed listening to Hendrix and not some devil worship metal album. Then it leveled out. Ahhhh And now “Little Miss Strwnge” sounds like the Beatles. And look, I’m in an irritable mood and I’m not going to correct any grammar or spelling mistakes that the autocorrect doesn’t pick up. I cannae be arsed as they say on Geordie Shore. I have to say, I wasn’t in to this album like I assumed I would have been. It seems more spliced together than a concerted effort to put out a best album of all time. The guitar parts are great, 100% it’s just everything else that isn’t a known song of his by this point just falls flat.

Solid but feels uncohesive, the various production sounds and lengths give it more of an album of jams and demos than an outright put-together album with a central theme. Some incredible blues rock jams and some straight-forward psych rock dirty guitar, it just isn't enough for me to come back to this experience again, I'd rather listen to an earlier album.

I spent some time hanging my bohemian tapestry on some barbiturates while listening to this album. Got so zonked out that it ended up taking me an hour and fifteen minutes just to get it done. Who's this Steve Winwood fella? He seems to have his shit together and I hope to see what he can do in the future. If you like 13 minute songs about becoming a fish, then this is the album for you!

Guitar at its best.

Jimi is a freak on guitar, but the rambling of some of these songs drones on too long. On a greatest hits compilation, Crosstown Traffic, All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child are some of the best, but theres about 20 minutes that could be cut out of this.

Classic

While I’m not surprised that this is still on the list given the hype and myth surrounding Hendrix and his unique and very accomplished playing, I find it hard to justify its continued presence in these sorts of lists. Is it a perfect record? No. Who starts a record with a 2min drone with warped unintelligible vocals? It’s all over the map both lyrically and genre - pop, funk, blues and psychedelic rock but the true gems stand out. And maybe that was the point. Some of the best tracks come after some rather bland songs. A great example is the amazing “Crosstown Traffic” which follows the rather dull, lyrically uninspired and derivative “Have you ever been to Electric Lady Land”. It’s truly a mixed bag until the last two tracks which are genius in both sound and spirit: All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Chile (Return). In my mind Hendrix took an hour of basically noodling to achieve the sound that we recognize as deserving of fame. With Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile and perhaps, Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) this would have been a tight record that you could play all the way through without the snooze in the middle.

Not Jimi's finest album, it feels a bit of a mix up of all sorts. Obviously the highs are incredible but it's not a coherent overall sound.

A few long winded jams but a few tracks that hit hard. All around positive. 3/5

Ooh this one is a bit out there. A few songs I really tuned into but the rest kind of melded into one for me.

Weird psych. Outside of the solid singles, nothing blew me away. It’s cool to see Jimi go way out there for album #3

Jimi elevates the traditional blues tracks; the originals reek of 60s psychedelic pop both good and bad. 3 stars

Really liked crosstown traffic and all along the watchtower but the other songs were a tad too informal for me honestly. Good vibe overall but would like more complete songs. Specific rating - 3.5 Fav song- crosstown traffic Least fav- 1983 (a merman I should turn to be)

Not too bad, but does overstay it's welcome a bit. Standout track: All Along The Watchtower

Alright nothing too special for me

A couple of good songs but I'm just not a fan. 3/5

For langt. Like førstealbumet bedre. Ellers greit

Pleasant and easy to vibe to! Very experimental too, not your classic 60s album. Jimi is hot

Loved the last two song and Gypsy eyes was fun but I didn’t connect with this the way I wanted to. Just felt very unfocused and jammy. Maybe I will like the other Jimi albums more but not huge on this

I had not listened to the album before, and I was a bit disappointed. There are some really good pieces, which already new, but also allot of fillers. "Rainy Day, Dream Away" was a nice surprise. 6/10

The instrumental parts on Voodoo Chile are good, as are parts of other songs. Otherwise it sounds like what I expect from Jimi Hendrix. Good stuff.

3.5 stars.

3.5. Not a big Jimi Hendrix fan.

rhcp vibes

Great blues record, if a bit patchy. Some really good blues and early rock songs but also some fillers that would have been good played live but don't come across well on record

It's cool but it never really grabs me. That's how I have felt about most Hendrix I have heard.

Decently groovy. I think that guy Hendrix just might know how to play the guitar... "All along the watchtower" is great! 3,5/5

Idk. It was rough at the begining. Lots of meandering, but then it got interesting! He has a really cool style, but then as the album went on, he went back to meandering. I feel like if he solidified songs more, they would have been better. I mean one is literally 15 minutes long.

Outside of the hits the only song I care about is the 15 minute acid jam about mermaids.

I was expecting this to blow my mind, but honestly, it didn't leave much of an impact. My main thing is -- I've always heard people unequivocally say that Jimi Hendrix was probably the best guitarist to ever live. But then, his solos on this album are just...fine? Sort of forgettable, not very emotional, all kind of the same? I'm not doubting his musicianship, I guess I just don't get the hype. It's a pretty normal psychedelic rock album, which is neat, but not the best thing since sliced bread. Lastly: why is Watchtower the most famous song here? It seems like a fine radio hit, nothing miraculous. Maybe this is a hot take, but I don't even think it's in the top three songs of this album. Fave songs: - Voodoo Chile - Long Hot Summer Night - Gypsy Eyes - All Along the Watchtower - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Great guitar playing, but a lot of very weak songs. Some absolutely iconic cuts though

Some awesome songs, obviously, but kind of a mess of an album overall.

no one can make a guitar sing like jimi! i do think this album did lose me at times, but there are some great songs on it

The only previous time I’ve listened to Electric Ladyland was years ago when my dad played it in the car, presumably for the first time in a while. I don’t remember the music but I do remember that when it finished he said something like: ‘I’d forgotten how much rubbish there is on this, until the last two tracks’. Evaluating it properly for myself now, my first reaction was ‘whoa, that’s a bit harsh on Crosstown Traffic, Dad!’ But aside those three classics, maybe he had a point. There's some nice stuff, some indifferent stuff, and some downright self-indulgent stuff. 3 / 3.5

high 3, could’ve been better if the songs weren’t 18 minutes

heard before, didn't blow me away 3/5

One of those "I appreciate it in theory but it doesn't really resonate with me" albums. But it's not Hendrix's fault that he's been overplayed to the point that it's hard to listen to his stuff with fresh ears.

Very fun, but I still only really like his hits

Like his ‘Are you experienced?’ Album better.

All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child truly save this album

This was a pleasant surprise as I had only heard Purple Haze before & didn’t like it. I was expecting an album of Voodoo Chiles but surprised to find it wasn’t that!

Good vibes but why the fuck are the songs so long at some points

The album is a scattered mess, so much so that their produced quit halfway through recording. And that's what makes this album a good one!

some good stuff. could do without the long songs

Great guitar of course Trouble with the tinnyness

Some classics on here but album ruined by self indulgent no sense

Repeat listen

This holds up. It sounds like the future but also like 1968. The best thing is that while Jimi is a skilled guitarist, the songs don't feel in service of the guitar. Rather, the guitar is there because it needs to be.

Much like Star Wars, it’s just not for me.

1983 riff amazing overall decent vocals and album

неплох

Some classic hits. Solid guitar playing, and funky beats, but gets a little too much jam / guitar solo

Great hits, but too much filler

I was not a huge fan of the lyrics in these songs. I found them a little distasteful. I'm also not much for the meaning in the songs. His vocals were fantastic and the instrumentals had a clear blues influence that I liked. This album was just not for me.

Excellent guitar and overall sound. Some of the music isn't perfectly sold on me, but it still sounds great.

Hmm ikke egentlig min greie, hørte halvveis gjennom. All along the watchtower er jo en klassiker, men resten blir litt for jammete for meg.

Potentially hasty rating but I found this very long

By the time I got to 1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be) I was not ready for another 13 minute track. It hurts to give Jimi three stars, but the albums drags as a whole.

Not fully my thing, but moments of transcendence. Probably a few songs too many; drags a bit in the later half. The closeout of All along the Watchtower into Voodoo Chile is crazy good.

This was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I think it’s cool that he waited an hour and twenty minutes to play the good songs.

Buen inicio Parte aburrida (medio) Muchas canciones de relleno

Alright, so: some bangers, but I feel i didn't quite listen to it as it deserves. Need a relisten.

I honestly think the legend of Jimi and the fact that he does have some absolute classics has kind of overtaken the fact that a lot of the stuff on here is self indulgent and aimless. That may be sacrilege to some but there it is

Psychedelic music isn't usually my thing but I enjoyed a few of the more out there songs on this album. The guitar was good, but that's to be expected. All Along the Watch Tower is an all time great

A bluesy Jimi. Not bad. Pretty psychedelic, which makes sense for the period. While there are some big highlights on here, its mostly uninteresting to me.

Not my favorite of his albums, but Watchtower is one of the best songs ever recorded.

i will never fully get jimi. im sure this sounded mind blowing in the 60s but i dunno about today and i can’t quite put myself in that mindset. best song is a bob dylan song so

Sounds Pink Floyd-ish

A little too long. Great blues tracks, but meandered a lot as others have said.

My first time listening to a Hendrix album as I’m not really a big fan. I respect his talent and the way he uses the guitar, very creative. However, a lot of it is just noise and no real melody. As a double album this was bloated but some highlights thrown in. Burning of The Midnight Lamp’ was a highlight but the rest just merge into one.

Decent but he’s done better.

Groovy, rhythmic. Long af with some impressive guitar riffs. Zoned out after a while and everything started to sound similar.

Weird, elektrisch, weinig vocale, veel solos

It was weird. It was weird to hear that song near the beginning, about the girl or the lady. Not Ladyland and not Voodoo Chile. Little Miss Strange! It sounds like a Beatles song. And Jimi's bandmates were British. Did some learning here. I like how it's 75min long! Not many people doing that back then.

Everyone always hypes up Jimi Hendrix as this most amazing guitar player of all time but honestly it felt like this was just a lot of noodling (I fully acknowledge tho I am not a guitar player so maybe it’s just lost on me) I like the psychedelic elements but I dunno, wouldn’t be my first choice to introduce someone to Hendrix. Couple of bangers tho, and it was a quick hour 15. The songs blend so seamlessly that I didn’t even realize I was halfway through a second listen through

feels like background music.

I somehow inherited this album - I think my brother left it behind back in the 70s - it was a nice nostalgic re-listen 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky

You can't make a movie about the Vietnam War without a scene shot from a helicopter while "Fortunate Son" by CCR or "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix is playing. While I appreciate the genius of Hendrix, this is the second album I've gotten by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and that's about enough hippie-dippie poetry rock for my lifetime.

Not my favourite Hendrix album, but it's still good.

Ordentliche Sounds ohne spektakuläre Songs. Nett zu hören.

I would have loved this if it was like 30 or so minutes. The hour plus run time made the middle of this really drag. However - there’s some good tracks on this.

Never listen to the albums your favourite songs come from. It was listenable but not of my own taste

Great listen on a Friday afternoon, finishing up for the weekend.

Being historically important can only get you so far, kid. (but slightly better) ⭐⭐⭐1/2

I'm familiar with this one having owned the double album for more than 40 years. Not his best but still good.

Somehow never struck me that the "Slight Return" part of Voodo Child was quite literal. It's the better much song in any case. It's sad to slowly but surely find out that one loves Jimi Hendrix for certain songs rather than entire albums… Though this is one of those rare cases where the album gets better and better as it goes on; with the exception of Crosstown Traffic, all the highlights are in the second half, with All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child notably closing the album.

A bit long and meandering, but a great groove.

3.5. A few great songs, a bit of filler.

Not a no skip album.

Voodoo Chile has some really great moments, but it gets away from itself and is far too long. The fuzzy guitar and psychedelic licks with the Beatles-esque vocals and lyrics on Little Miss Strange was a great palate cleanser. Almost Bowie-esque vocals on the 1983. All Along the Watchtower is a 10/10 song.

Some very long songs but overall a pretty solid listen. A bit different to what I'd normally go for but that was nice

Groovy, bluesy, psychedelic, and a bit meandering.

To much noodling, but one of the best cover songs in the history of music, Voodoo Child and Crosstown Traffic is worth a star on its own.

This one is fun. It never hooked me in, but it was enjoyable all the way through.

un 3...

i think that i just dont like songs of this genre/time period. This was FINE but i was waiting for it to end so i could move on. its a 2.5 for me so im giving a 3 to counter my haterness

Okay, a few classics. God awful opening track

Opening track is great. Also I swear everyone has a cover of Let the Good Times Roll (the more covers of it the better!)

It was ok compared to his first two

Lemppari: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Vähiten lemppari: 1983

This was underwhelming given how much people revere Jimi Hendrix. I guess nobody was playing guitar like this before he came along, but to my modern ear it's nothing mind-blowing. The songs are a bit too all over the place for me, and the album is far too long for how good it is

Yeah this is a very influential album for sure, it’s sound is nothing like it for the 60’s, however due to its age I don’t think it’s too enjoyable of a listen, esp the 14min song. Solod

cool songs but not for me

Some great tracks but a bit of a meandering mismatch- still enjoyable

Some great songs, but too long overall, imo. I wasn't quite up for it.

This feels like the first album of his that actually showcases the guitar virtuoso he was but it is still produced in a muddy fashion like most of his songs. A large chunk of the songs in the middle are pretty disposable but sides A and D are KILLER. I would be happy if “Voodoo Chile” was 15 minutes longer. Some face melting going on there. Also, it must be noted how strange it is to have the two best songs at the very end after an hour of music.

Heavy, dirty, groundbreaking. Less focused and balanced than Axis: Bold As Love.

Solid, but won't be listening again any time soon

I accidentally left my review for "Electric Ladyland" on "Axis: Bold As Love", so this is a review for "Axis: Bold As Love". Pretty good, and I can see just how influential this album has been on music in the following decades, but I won't be listening again. Standout track: - Castles Made of Sand (4/5) - Bold As Love (4/5)

Jimi Hendrix always provided us with the sickest guitar riffs, and he has some incredible guitar solos on this album. With that being said, this album goes on too long for what it is, and there are some major duds on this album. Favorite Track: "Come On(Let The Good Times Roll)".

There are lots of positives. But man it's long, and when I'm listening to it, I sometimes forget I'm listening to it. It isn't holding my concentration at all. Crosstown Traffic is awesome. Little Miss Strange is good, Watchtower is great, but man oh man you could cut 30 mins

A few popular, recognizable songs. The rest is okay and sometimes very long.

It’s solid, pretty cool hearing the guitar sounds that were unprecedented at that point. Unfortunately they are precedented in my mind, can be repetitive throughout the album, and since it’s a Monday morning and I’m grumpy so this is getting 3.49/5

Putting in my thought for the last three albums because I listened to them all while driving and couldn't write anything down at the time: Hounds of Love by Kate Bush: I think I'm too stupid to understand this (2/5) Urban Hymns by The Verve: Why is Urban Hymns 1 hour and 15 minutes, Urban Hymns (Deluxe) 2 hours and 34 minutes, and Urban Hymns (Super Deluxe) 5 hours and 30 minutes? An average rate of 1 Bittersweet Symphony per hour is crazy. (4/5) Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix: Probably the coolest way to spell 'Jimmy Hendricks' (3/5)

Would get a 2 bc holy shit songs were long but I went to pick up Matt from the airport and a guitar solo was playing while I was driving and it felt like a movie soundtrack

Jimi Hendrix is such an amazing guitarist. His singing voice is fairly good, and supports the music fine, but it really is the guitar that keeps me coming back. All Along The Watchtower is incredible. And then there's Voodoo Chile. It was going along ok, solid 3 song. Thinking the song was almost over, I look at the screen. Thing wasn't even 1/3 of the way through! Waaaaay too long, and already drags by the 5 minute mark. And then there's A Merman I Should Turn To Be. I was really digging this one. Through the first 4 minutes. Then saw there was still 9 more minutes to go. Jimi, my dude, learn to end your songs. Decent album, but I prefer the other one I've had of his, Are You Experienced. Best song: All Along The Watchtower

You try to just let yourself sink in and be immersed in psychedelic Hendrix guitar wailing, but then “Voodoo Chile’s” 15 minutes abruptly end and you think there’s been some mistake. “Long Hot Summer Night” gets back to Jimi, but it's too late because “Little Miss Strange” jolted you out of the bliss, and if you were tripping along with Jimi may have done even worse. It takes too long to get there, but “All Along the Watchtower” at the end is still worth it. “Watchtower” is my favorite Jimi song, even though it’s a cover (such a successful cover that Dylan would go on to perform the song closer to Hendrix’s version than his own). It’s one of my favorite songs, period. Dave Matthews’ version from “Live at Red Rocks” is another awesome interpretation. “Watchtower” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” are by far the highlights of an otherwise unspectacular album.

There is a lot to like. The main issue is just that there is a lot in general.

At moments ambling, messy, and brilliant. It feels like Hendrix went on an extended acid trip and recorded an album.

Okay. So far.

This album is perfect for someone when wants to listen to rock that's more gentle than other rock songs. In my opinion, I think that this album isn't that bad, it's actually pretty good, but I feel like it has a lot of potential. The first reason I think it isn't that bad is because it's a little bit of rock, but not that much. It's pretty gentle and nice to listen to. Another reason why this song isn't a bad song is because I like the instruments that are used in this song and I feel like it would go well with the lyrics and what the type of music is. I would probably give this album a solid 4 stars because I feel like it's pretty good, it's different that what I normally listen to but it;s still good. I would not recommend this because I feel like not very many people would like this type of music and that this music is a very specific music.

in my opinion I like the album a little bit I like the instruments and I like the vocals and the lyrics so I rate this song a 4. I give the second song a 3 because I like the intuments. 3 I like the song because of the lycricd

for some reason this song gives me the tingles but i liked the rock in it i liked it but i like the gutair also it was kinda fun to listen to also buti think i liked the ablum

the first one is okay and I like the beat and the second one is better than the first one . the last one is the worse cuz it sounds bad the beat isnt good either

I liked "All along the watchtower" because it was cool. I liked the guitar music. I thought "Voodoo chile" was okay. It wasn't the best. "A long summer night" was pretty good. The signing was good. Overall I think this album is pretty good.

I thought it was an okay album. "All Along the Watchtower" wasn't my favorite but it wasn't the worst song I've ever heard. I didn't like the rock aspect of it that much. "Voodoo Chile" I liked even less then "All Along the Watch" it sounded weird with the instrumentation and slow lyrics. "Long Hot Summer Nights" was the best one in my opinion. I would rate this album two stars. I wouldn't recomend this album because it sounds weird with the lyrics and the instrumentation.

Didn’t speak to me on a deeper level.

point6.

I literally listened to this for the first time last week, and on vinyl, before getting it on this list. So a physical listen and a digital listen gives me a lot to work with here. It's a pretty solid album, and definitely an album worth listening to with your mates over a few beers. Seriously, scotch and this album go together like heroin and Jimi- oh.. But, there is a lot lacking for one of the albums considered to be a "greatest of all time". The runtime can become excruciating. You have to sit through 3 LP's before you even get to the two biggest songs on the record, and these songs are the ones that 99% of people probably bought the album for in the first place. This is still a great album, but I think in the grand scheme of things, it's a bit overrated. Definitely deserves its' spot on the 1001 list, but this album would not even be considered in this list if it weren't for the last two songs on the record. Sorry Jimi, mate; but you've done better.

While I wouldn't call it a slog to get through, you can definitely tell the highlights 'AKA the last two tracks' really carry this album for people. It stands so far and above everything else before it

Evocative of acid era Beatles. Loved the raining refrains making it feel like a complete piece and saving the single ("Watchtower") for the end was climatic in a satisfying way. Also enjoyed the snippets of conversation on the track. Lots of the tracks were just so long and I lost interest/the thread. Should maybe listen to again on LSD

Someone has to set the bar. Hendrix set electric guitar playing to 11 on a ten scale

Had a slow start but got good Interesting, often straightforward lyrical style. Sang what he wanted to without worrying if it could fit into a melody syllabically. I prefer instrumental moments to those with singing. best tunes: little miss strange, burning of the midnight lamp; rainy day, dream away; 1983... (a merman I should turn to be)

Went into this thinking I was a Jimi Hendrix fan only to realize I'm really just a fan of his hits. None of his other tracks are necessarily bad, they're just kinda meh.

Rambly, but entertaining throughout

Crosstown Traffic Let The Good Times Roll All Along the Watchtower Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Interesting to relisten. Obviously a super influential album but doesn’t seem to stand out as much today.

Only Voodoo Child and Little Wing are any good

First? 3/5 Again? 3/5

Ehh didn't love it, not for me. Can't deny his talent though. Album seemed quite incoherent, each song was quite different from the previous. Chaos.

Jimi I got thru half sorry bro

Lots of good songs but I think I don’t have the attention span for 16 min wanky blues songs

My least favorite album from my favorite guitar player. A few great tracks but not one I'll listen to in it's entirety.

It takes you to a different time(:

very funky album, would def listen again. fave track is come on (let the good times roll)

Not for me. Reminds me too much of high school boys.

definitely agree with others that the jammy parts are too jammy. I’m not a jam band person in the slightest. But besides that, it’s really funky and experimental and fun. Also just kept thinking what a shame we didnt get to see what he could have done with his 30’s and 40’s.

The hits (All Along The Watchtower & Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) were great, but the rest was kinda just Jimi-flavored filler. Not really my cup of tea. Three stars.

"All along the watchtower" einziges Highlight für mich, 3 Sterne

Great album was classics in it, 3.5

Enjoyed this

"All Along The Watchtower" is super iconic, and I enjoyed listening to that. The rest of the album was too long and didn't have much that I loved. Jimi's gratuitous technical guitar doesn't quite hit for me. I think I lack a refined guitar shredding palette. None of it is actively bad or annoying me, but I just don't really ever need to have it on. 5/10

Coups de cœur : - Have You Been (To Electric Ladyland) - Burning of the Midnight Lamp - 1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)

It was a decent listen and surprising. The theme was confusing and the drawn out jam sessions were less palatable.

Better than the Axis album.

I can see why people say this is the greatest guitarist of all time

Really enjoyable if you like the sound of electric guitars. But honestly, with the way that Jimi Hendrix is hyped, I expected a little more. Didn't mind the two 10-15min tracks on the album, although the overall runtime of 1 hour 15 minutes is too much. It doesn't help, that arguably the best songs, Voodoo Child and All Along the Watchtower, are the closing two. 3.5/5

Vibes are immaculate. Energy is tops. Not my fave album of his but holds up.

Trippy. Songs just aren’t nearly as strong as his other two albums, at least on first listen. Hall of fame cover art.

Psychedelically relaxing, my favorite Jimi album so far. All along the watchtower was a standout. Calm vibe, yet great guitar riffs that were almost folksy at times.

Like all Jimi records, for me this is a mixed bag. The highs are astronomically high. Greatest songs ever stuff. But the rest is sort of meandering and my mind wanders. Hate to do it, but it's a 3 due to length being eaten by so much average stuff.

Overall, I love the way psychedelia transforms the underlying blues on this album, but there's way too much rapid panning of guitars and psychedelic sound effects on this album that distract from the songs themselves. The rapid panning immediately took me out of it several times. I'm also not a fan of 18 minute long songs that don't vary their song structure enough to justify their duration. I would listen to this again and skip the overlong songs. All Along the Watchtower and Crosstown Traffic still slap.

I love blues and guitar noodling but oh boy, this missed the mark. Too psychadelic, Jimi is a legend but I had to struggle through this. Crosstown Traffic and Voodoo Chile were great, I'm still a sucker for blues riffs. A lot of it just felt aimless, like building an album around noodling.

I feel like the generator is apologizing to me for giving me We’re Only In It For The Money by The Mothers of Invention. Like “Sorry for that shit. Here’s some actual good music from 1968.” I admire the sentiment, I mean Jimi Hendrix is legendary. There is no denying that. But I don’t think this is his magnum opus. Frankly, it kinda of suffers from a few problems. The biggest ones are its length and its lack of focus. Being double album sized and not bringing your A-game makes for kind of a meandering experience. Not that Hendrix is boring at all. There is some good shit here, especially near the end. Those last two tracks are godlike. But the two longer tracks, Voodoo Chile (not the return, that’s amazing) and 1983, overstay their welcome, especially 1983. Hendrix here is great in parts on this album and I was kind of hoping it would be more than that. Maybe I’ll get that from Are You Experienced. But Hendrix can still provide the goods even in he doesn’t fire on all cylinders. Favorite track: Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Other hits: All Along the Watchtower, Crosstown Traffic, Burning of the Midnight Lamp, House Burning Down, Have You Ever Been (to Electric Ladyland)

I can appreciate Hendrix was doing stuff that people hadn't even considered with a guitar. He was revolutionary. It's just not for me

For langt. Like førstealbumet bedre. Ellers greit

No one did it like Jimi did... But this album meanders and drags along like nobody's business Perhaps a stricter producer might have been better for this album

You can't fuck with a Hendrix greatest hits, but his studio albums are always a bit patchy I find.

Has it’s moments

This is one of those albums where I know it's supposed to be good, but it made me feel nothing.

I respect Jimmi's guitar playing and recognize he's iconic, but this is not super my kind of music. Meanders too much. 3* Highlight: voodoo child (the second one)

Good couple of songs some I just couldn't get into. Probably a better experience if just sitting and listening to it with nothing else going on.

Enjoyable. Some classic Jimi. A little long. 3.5

Jimi. While this is a classic, in reality, for me, there are only a few really good songs on this...

I love Jimi but this album goes on for too long.

This was my first exposure to Jimmy Hendrix. Maybe I need more time with him, cuz I was kinda just like, yeah it's pretty good, but I'm not blown away or anything. I'm sure that kind of shredding was epic in the 60s though. I'll give this another listen

Good. Some classic tracks, but overall for me not as satisfying as their other albums. Also: too long.

This one didn’t hit me the same as his others we’ve listened to. Maybe I’ll rate it higher upon another listen.

It sounded alright but it wasn’t for me. I think there where too many guitar rifts that went unappreciated by me.

Well I'm more familiar with with Jimi's music than I was. The album was pretty cool in spite of it feeling a little all over the place. I'd listen to it again but i don't feel compelled to add it to my library.

I like Jimi Hendrix but this album was long and I liked some tracks more than others. Rating: 3

Kinda an all over the place album, and too long. Ends on a super high note tho

Two great songs -- "Voodoo Chile" and (especially) "All Along the Watchtower." But many of these songs just don't have natural endings, and I think the slow fadeout is always disappointing.

Album felt like a slow meandering waltz, but did close out with a great rendition of “All Along the Watchtower”.

Yea, it's fun

Standout tracks: Voodoo Chile (both) Burning of the Midnight Lamp 1983 All Along the Watchtower

before: I've never listened to this full album before. I know some of the songs, but I think many just by name. I couldn't sing lyrics or melodies from them like I can from his debut (Hey Joe, Purple Haze, Fire). I should say I mostly know Hendrix's actual music from the BBC live album, which is amazing, I love the vitality that comes through in his live playing The first track instantly made me think of how innovative his playing must have been seen as at the time. Like hearing Tom Morello in 1992. One (overly simple) way to categorize songs is vibe songs vs plot songs. To me the best Hendrix songs combine those, and I'm not getting that from this album, I'm getting too much vibes. That said, I just looked and the song that was playing while I had that thought was Voodoo Chile, which is 15 minutes, so I might just be commenting on that one song Stopped thinking and started listening for a bit. This is obviously a great album. The two 13+ minute tracks don't really fit with my tastes. I'm reminded of the saying "genius is a great idea and not quite enough time to work on it". I think constraints can add to great art; those tracks were unconstrained. I'm very aware of the tendency to downplay the works of innovators when you hear the people they influenced before you hear the influencer themselves. I suspect I'm falling prey to that here. How amazing would it have been to hear this album in 1968?

I love and respect Jimi for his talent and contributions to guitar music and pushing of the “sonic envelope”. However, I get a little annoyed with the 15 minute song. That shouldn’t take away from his talents and abilities, but it does affect my ratings. I would have given this 4 stars based on the handful of amazing songs on here, but I get a little bogged down by the other tracks. Overall it’s certainly an impressive album but I can’t give it 4 or 5 stars simply because there are a few tracks that feel a little self indulgent.

More fluff than I remember. Its worth it for All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Chile/VC (Slight Return). Pretty decent stuff with Crosstown Traffic, Gypsy Eyes and Come On (Let the Good Times Roll). Otherwise, it's a lot of unfinished bits. Too bad, the good really is good on this one.

Well, I used to love, love Jimi Hendrix. One of my first CDs was “Are you Experienced?” I purchased a fair number of imports and ephemera from Jimi and thought they were all awesome. Jimi's rendition of "Killing" Floor on a European double CD import is still one of my favorite songs. This album is just fine, a few really good songs but on the whole a little underwhelming.

twirl guitar blur

Like Jimmy but this album is too far out, man :-).

Not quite sure what was going on with a lot of this album. Didn’t enjoy it as much as I was hoping to.

Good and iconic. Not something i'd listen to a lot, but fun.

I thought electric ladyland was a ok album. The guitar was wild good and with the instruments were good, but I just don't connect with this album. its lyrics also weren't the best. So I really didn't like album, but if you like sick guitar solos this albums for you

Do you like songs that are focused on guitars? Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix would be the perfect album for you. I love how his guitar sound and the fact that his songs are mainly focused on guitar. I can also hear the bass line so I love that. It's a good album but I think I would listen to it if I want to fall asleep or something, I wouldn't listen to it when doing chores or other things. Overall I would recommend this album.

have you ever heard a song and thought that sounds good thats what i thought when i heard voodoo chile because it has a nice chill tone and the instruments add to it by adding like and mysterious feeling and than it gets to being louder which i didnt like because it didnt really fit in with me with the lyrics i think this song is okay i would recommend listening to it

It was pretty distinctive, but it wasn't quite my cup of tea

More fun than I was expecting. Technically impressive guitar, but also just energetic and whimsical jams.

Best track is a cover. The rest is mediocre. I was hoping for something more.

Hard to ignore the greatness of Hendrix, but this is my least favorite of his studio work. It’s trippier which is great, but I think it’s bloated with lesser songs. I do like the hits and his cover of Watchtower is awesome, but the rest, including the extended jams are boring to me. And, it’s all saddled with a mushy production. This album just isn’t for me.

This is the third Jimi Hendrix album so far in this challenge, and although I like him as an artist, I'm not sure why he has multiple albums on the 1001 list when they all sound very similar. I'm giving this 3 stars, one for 'Voodoo Child' (Slight Return) and 2 for 'All along the Watchtower' (which is probably a 5 star track, but there are too many average tracks in this collection to give the album more than 3.

An album by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland. A correct album that feel messy with a lack of structure, and which sounds more of a compilation of pleasant jam session rather than a themed studio album. The end of the album would compensate for that missing bit while proving the musical genius of Hendrix with the well known title `All Along the Watchtower`, that would be worth the whole project.

Got a lot going on

This is pretty cool. Just curious guitar parts in every track. Little Miss Strange came on and I thought I was listening to the Beatles or something!

Really amazing guitar for most of it but I dunno the songwriting is kinda meh

Good. Not bad.

What world are people living in that a 15 minute song is ok? Jimi was a pioneer of electric guitar, and there are too many influential things here, but I question his song writing and his judgement. If he's so good, why is he dead?

Excellent musicianship! 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) was magical. Drags a little bit for my liking though :/ 3/5

Some of my favourite Hendrix tracks on this album... Voodoo Child, Crosstown Traffic, All Along the Watchtower. However, I've heard better version of most, if not all of those elsewhere. Some unnecessary minute long interludes in the album too which serve no purpose.

Some absolute guitar god greatness, some absolute acid-fueled drivel, but mostly, Electric Ladyland is just mediocre blues-based proto-hard rock. Maybe if it wasn’t so goddamn long it’d be better, but even the flashiness of Hendrick’s raw talent can’t distract me from long-winded songwriting, bland structure, and useless studio tinkering. It’s fine, but the best songs are mostly found on Side D, strangely enough. It’s less annoying than Axis Bold As Love, but it’s also a million times more boring. It’s sad to realize that Hendrix was mostly a Greatest Hits artist, but god, the dude could not stay consistent for a single record. If he wasn’t such a goddamn incredible player, I doubt we’d talk much about him, let alone continue to praise a pretty mid-tier record like Electric Ladyland. The best songs are worth a listen, but you don’t have to slog through the rest of the record to get to them.

I thought I was really going to like this, because I love me some Jimi, and I didn't recognize most of the songs on this album, but it turns out it was mostly just mediocre meandering with some cool guitar. A couple of incredible songs on here but overall it was a pass

Tame impala in the 60's doesn't work

The highs are unimpeachably high. Watchtower and Voodoo Child are as good as it gets But there’s a lot of noodly indulgence here as well

You can really hear how ?primitive? Production was back in the day

Decent album overall. Typical bluesy rock of the time with the usual Hendrix flair along with some weird sonic choices.

Ambivalent. More murky muddy than I remember, overlong; vs. actual genius at work, heavy blue jazz.

All Along the Watchtower.

I love his guitar playing and the popular songs on here are really good but the deep cuts just bore me to death and his singing isn’t that great unfortunately. His legacy for me stands as a fantastic guitar player but the rest of it isn’t greater than the sum of its parts

There are parts of this album which are unbelievably good, especially when you consider how old it is. However there are bits that are dated and hearing Little miss strange kick in for the first time is jarring and in general the middle part of the album is a bit of meandering mess. The beginning and end though are outstanding.

Probably haven't listened to Jimi Hendrix deliberately since I was a kid in the 70's (ditto Beatles for those taking notes)... Some moments of absolute brilliance, with lots of indulgence in-between. Kinda explains Princes first album a lot too...

I enjoyed Voodoo Chile (and its reprise) but it felt like there was a lot of filler on this album. So much that by the time All Along The Watchtower came along, I was feeling jaded.

I think too many songs that are all a little too similar.

2 psychedelic 4 me

3.6, expected better

It’s hard to argue with the genius of Jimi’s playing, although I’m not a fan of the longer, jazz-like meandering jams.

The hits are great but there’s a lot of nonsense in between.

Come on Gypsy eyes

Hendrix was an extraordinary musical talent, although the songs aren’t as catchy as I’d hope them to be

Jag skulle vilja gilla Jimi mer. Men det klickar inte. Hitsen är ju svinbra. Men resten. Fattar inte riktigt storheten. Det är förstås ok. Men tänker att det borde vara magiskt.

Shrug. 3.4.

Oh Jimi if you'd only have lived in a world with proper recording equipment. This album is a 5/5 if you're a weird guitar nerd, for everyone else probably more like a 3/5.

I guess im not much of a jammer idk i prefer the shorter catchier experience stuff.

Good, but got tired of Hendrix about 30 years ago.

It was certainly good but not my style of music. My favorite was “All Along the Watchtower.”

Some amazing guitar playing and a couple of good songs but it’s too much for me for a whole album listen.

Has the best helicopter hot landing song ever, all along the watchtower and could listen to voodoo child all day. He's clearly a legend but there is a lot of filler and some songs just don't seem like Hendrix.

Songs were a bit too long for my liking! But jeez Jimi Hendrix could play the heck out of the guitar.

As a cultural artifact, the existence of this recording is an invaluable insight documenting the creative expanse within Hendrix' mind. As a record to sit down and listen to, it would have greatly benefitted from some editorial input. Ah well. At least we got All Along the Watchtower from Hendrix and SRV's cover of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).

What is with the 15 minute long songs?

An ok album
