Not my jam. But there's def more to AW than I thought. I can totally see how she played a part in the British white lady soul thing. I liked the earlier album more I think.

I understand that sometimes using a major key can work with sad, depressing lyrics but it didn’t here. Also, it is sad that she was mocking people who were trying to stop her from killing herself. This is straight up one of the most depressing albums EVER

Like the other record by Winehouse, her voice is amazing, but the retro sounding songs with modern language are not interesting to me. It just does not sound genuine.

Rehab was very catchy, albeit tragic in retrospect. The rest of the album was an interesting blend of retro sound design with modern, dumpster fire lyrics. I'm usually a fan of the later, but it mostly didn't click with me here. Perhaps the problem is, I can't help but compare her to Lana Del Rey. And compared to the often mercurial, vivid lyrics of Lana, Back to Black felt simplistic. There was an element of rawness that many would likely find appealing, but again, compared to 90's hip hop it wasn't that raw. Maybe taken in isolation, it's a good enough album. But I can't view it through that untainted lens.

OH NO I HATE THIS. Does she have a good voice? Yes. Does she do anything interesting with it? No. The music is so boring. All the songs sound the same and have the same subject matter. The throwback sound isn’t good it’s so boring. When the album finished Spotify recommended Sharon Jones who is also a throwback and is also 100x better because her voice has more range and the instrumentals were fun and funky. I wonder if this is popular because of the *gasp* scandal. She’s singing like she’s from the 60s…but they didn’t talk about drugs and sex.

While running errands, I gave Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ a listen. Her voice didn’t resonate with me, making it a bit of a challenge. I appreciate talent, but enjoyment is key in music. This reminded me of John Zorn, whose intricate music is admired by many but not for everyone. Music should resonate with the listener, and this one just didn’t click for me.

Not a big fan of her vocal style

I've always just thought this album was okay

i'll probably be on the wrong side of history with this one but i just don't care for this. this album has all the trappings of a 60s motown/soul record but none of the legitimacy. i can't put my finger on it but it just all feels a bit fake and self-indulgent, like i'm at a theme park that's well maintained but doesn't do justice to the authentic world it's based on. does this make any sense amy winehouse was definitely a troubled soul, but as i sit here listening to rehab (a song i feel like i've heard a thousand times on the radio and never really care to hear again), it's all just a little uncomfortable and unnerving, given what would become of her soon after. the inauspicious lines of "i said no, no, no" and "my daddy thinks i'm fine" are both haunting and yet blindingly obvious. if she's fine with her alcoholism, even celebrating it here and denying reasonable attempts to help, it really comes as no surprise that it would be the thing that ultimately does her in. i don't want to sound callous but like, yeah... of course, amy. anyway the rest of this album has that kind of "i'm playing in the genre" vibe to me with songwriting that's hit or miss. back to black was an actually somewhat interesting song, and i liked tears dry on their own. but the rest of it is decidedly not for me. don't mean to yuck anyone's yum but i just don't get it i guess. favorites: back to black, tears dry on their own

Obviously a terrific voice, but I didn't think these songs were nearly as deep as others with her sort of range (Adele or even Lady Gaga). And I'm not a fan of the songs she released here, especially "Rehab," which just makes me sad given her tragic life.

Ahhh the modern Ella Fitzgerald lol. Man, you never think too much about the song "Rehab" but what a cry for help if there ever was one. Amy was the female equivalent of Kurt Kobain... Well sort of. Maybe not. She was something. I remember my mom hating her music. I never gave her much listen as she seemed pretty poppy, but listening to her later in life has made her more enjoyable. She's like a fine house wine - she appreciates with time. Her story is intriguing. I need to watch the biopic. Oh man. As I listen it doesn't get better for me. It's starting to sound like Ella Fitzgerald more and more and it even sounds like big band music. Nevermind. Not a fan of this album. It's fine. Just not my type of music.

Amy was my first album on this 1001 thing, and almost ended it immediately. Now we are back for round two. I'm still not a fan, but I've improved my opinion of her after hearing these albums. I think I prefer the first one, but not by much. "Me & Mr. Jones" may be the first song I can recall hearing the word 'f*ckery' and that is amusing. The short runtime of these tracks is appreciated as they keep the album moving along. A few songs had some music elements that kept me expecting to hear different lyrics such as the "ain't no mountain" in "Tears dry on their own " which likely would have been my favorite track without the sampling. Overall, a decent album with some unique talent. Glad to have heard it by the end of it. Favorite track "Back to black" 2/5

Her voice is classic, but it wears on you and gets old quickly because she uses it to sing about sad depressing shit. Her music is a perfect representation of her generation.

Tortured soul music

defintely interesting to hear this a couple weeks after the Phil Spector christmas album, you can hear how clear the influence was... I'll be honest, this album does not do a ton for me. Maybe it's because of the over-prevalence of a lot of the singles, but it is just not super interesting to me. The 60s Wall-of-Sound production by Ronson is interesting and I respect it, but mimicking it 40 years later isn't super interesting to me... idk. "Tears Dry On Their Own" is just like directly aping the "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" open? Call it a nod or a tribute, but it is just not doing a lot for me I'm sorry! Or a sample I guess, after reading into it, a interpolation, blah blah blah. I'm all for sampling don't get me wrong but I think you need to do something interesting with it rather than just doing a similar motown-type song over it... Am I just in a bad mood this morning reviewing this album, possibly.

I didn't dig this, and I don't understand the intention of using a well-known track like 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' as the musical basis for her own song, a song that seems to have no melody or structure at all. At least the record was short!

Sound quality was horrible, could not hear it but what I could hear was pretty good

I feel that I missed or dismissed this album very early on and never came back to it. Listening now, perhaps for the first time in full, I was hoping for something to stand out. But nothing does. Amy's voice isn't great in this one, but I can usually forgive a poor vocal performance. The production felt cloying, the instruments dead, and the songs derivative of a style I find uninteresting but that the production team also failed to transform.

Her voice is stunning. Her arrangements are stunning. But I viscerally, viscerally hate the content of her songs. Rehab was the biggest gaslighting song ever when it first dropped, and now it almost sounds like a suicide note. I understand why her music is important to a lot of people, but this is one I just can't bring myself to like. Favorite track: Tears Dry on Their Own

Not a huuuge fan so far. I do think the music is creatively solid and has a really fun sound, but the lyrics leave a lot to be desired for me. It feels like she only really has one message to split between all 11 songs, and it's a shallow message to begin with. That said, I am not usually a fan of troubled heart, love gone wrong, edgy and broken songs to begin with, so she started at a bit of a disadvantage.

There is no denying that she is a great singer. Her lyrics are creative and straightfoward. The song topics vary. I'm not into this type of music sadly. The style of singing is too slow for me, the music isn't very catchy and instrumental of Wake Up Alone sould like something I heard a million times in other romantic slow songs. She brought soul back and brought the feeling of nostalgia back while giving us classic hits. I respect it. It's just not for me.

This is controversial. I know this album is very well received generally. I love Back to Black (the song), but the album doesn't do it for me. Back to Black is such an amazing song though, absolute standout for me, that song would get 5/5. This score is bearing in mind that all the albums on this list are good albums, so it is within that context.

That being said, there are a lot of familiar songs on this album and nearly every song is of a similar quality. I think back to black is the best track It's quite sad that so much of this album is about the struggles that eventually caught up with her. I get why people like it, just not sure I do very much

I know I'm politically incorrect, but I did not like this album very much.

It's fine - basically by-the-numbers soul music done 40 years after the peak for that style. I don't think Winehouse is a particularly strong singer, this CD adds virtually nothing to the standard formula (indeed, it somewhat subtracts in that it's so light on backing vocals), and it's kind of slow and dull (generally very down-tempo for pop music).

I think her voice is too whiney and nasally for me.

I've heard the song rehab before but off the top of my head I couldn't name another song of hers. I think she did a duet with Tony Bennet? I really enjoyed the music itself but her voice isn't my cup of tea and its very hard to make out what she is singing about. I was looking forward to this album but I ended up feeling disappointed.

I never got Amy, and I don’t think I ever will. Her voice has never impressed me, and if anything, only annoys me as I get older. I hear too much of a blaccent to get behind it. The musicianship is tight at least, but I think Ronson will have better work later on. D-

The info on 'Back To Black' is that it’s Amy Winehouse’s second… and final album. The title says it all: Amy’s back to black (a variety of self-destructive behaviors) in reaction to the breakdown of all her dysfunctional intimate relationships- seemingly, her one and only theme. Amy wants to be more than ‘Just Friends.’ Her play at ‘Love Is a Losing Game.’ Once again, she’s ‘Wake Up Alone.’ Etc, etc. A pitiful two and a half of the eleven songs on this album worked for me. The sheer desolation conveyed and felt on the title track, for example, just bludgeons the shit out of any enjoyment one may have been expecting on this album. Worse still, the second track, ‘You Know I’m No Good,’ finds Amy the cheating culprit, but utterly absent of any remorse. And there was nothing about the song that made me feel remotely sorry for her. Rather, I extend my consolation to the recording crew for having to suffer through an average band that gets little chance to shine, and a group of background singers who, at times, come close to caterwauling. At best, they’re still off-key. Two bizzare 50’s sounding numbers: ‘Wake Up Alone,’ ala Fats Domino, but with an off-putting chord progression, and ‘Me & Mr Jones,’ recorded in such a way that it makes the listener feel as if they were drunk. Amy sure was, or on some kind of mood altering substance. Her vocals often come across as if she’s just getting by. Even the cover photo suggests her emotional weariness. All this, along with a curious deficit of melody, makes listening to this LP a bit of a chore. I found myself having to push through a few times, hoping for better songs ahead. About the two and a half I did like- ‘Rehab,’ the opener, is one of the catchiest yet saddest songs you’re likely to hear. Of course, the inspiration of Amy’s pain is the loss of a man. The real root, however, obvious to us, is the loss of Amy’s self-love. At any rate, Amy’s various responses are standard for addicts: denial, blame, stubborn pride. It’s a good song, still, in its own way. ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ was the best of the bunch. Amy’s spirit is fully engaged on this one, and with a great melody, and a tasty arrangement. The whole band’s paying tribute to the classic Motown sound, and it’s jumpin’. Had the entire LP offered this, my rating would have risen considerably. And remarkably, Amy was actually touched by a moment of insight. I don’t recall hearing anything like this on her debut LP: ‘I should just be my own best friend. Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men.’ Yes, Amy, yes. There it was, sister, within your grasp. Had you only followed through on your own inner wisdom. The final song, ‘Addicted,’ left me 50/50. Silly lyrics, but to a swingin’ tune, highlighted with a terrific jazz flute. A strange pairing, those lyrics and this tune. And to close an album, too. Perhaps it offers a glimpse into the confused mind of an addict: Well, of course I don’t need rehab. What’s that? The final song on my new LP? Addicted. Songs as good as ‘Tears Dry on Their Own’ on an album as bad as 'Back To Black' leave me both a little sad but also kinda pissed off at what Amy Winehouse ultimately did with her talent; and, the sole, sorry reason why- areas with which I’m not entirely unfamiliar myself.

Not my cup of tea. Production is too slick but also too busy and her voice isn’t my thing. Good lyrics. Wonder if she’d thrown off the 50s throwback stuff she might have done something I really liked. Sadly she never got the chance to truly impress the world’s best music listener. RIP

Amy Winehouse's second and final album is "Back to Black". A R&B / soul album that has been nominated for - and won many awards - as well as being the second best-selling album in the UK in the 21st century. It is double platinum certified in the US. A phenomenal singer songwriter, Amy shows that she can produce any type of music, whether it's jazz, pop, R&B, or soul. Unfortunately but to be expected, Amy's death in 2011 caused this album to again top the charts around the world for at least 2 weeks. Although notably, this album and Amy inspired record companies to seek out more solo female talent. This album was enjoyable to listen to, even if it was a little sad.

Forgettable instrumentals, great voice. The first few songs are good but they grow more and more forgettable as they go on. Not something I'd return to, but I didn't hate it so let's just say that this is a really strong 2/5.

Overrated. Her voice doesn't sit quite right with me. The horns also don't feel real? It's not free enough imo. I bet this album would be better if it was recorded with a live setup instead of a studio.

It's perfectly done but I don't really care about it. I don't know why. Spot on reproduction of retro r&b soul with some reggae sprinkled in. The influences are plain but not too derivative, and it all sounds great. The tunes are solid. Confident as hell vocals (did Amy open the door for all the jazzy affected female singers in the late 2000s?). Must be current (mind)set and setting. They try to make me like this album but I say C+

A very strong start, but deteriorates after the first three songs. Her voice is too reedy for my tastes, lacking depth and variation. By the end of the album the music is distinctly average, slightly better than filler, but nothing special or that will stick in the mind.

Drugs bad, some bangers but meh overall

Općenito jako talentirana pjevačica, sa dosta poznatim hitovima na ovom albumu, a ovo mi je prvi susret sa albumom. Dosta kratak album, al pošto meni baš ne sjeda toliko album, onda je i okej. Nisam nikad imao neku posebnu želju se slušati ali evo sad jesam i mogu reći da Tears Dry on their Own je najbolja sa albuma. Ostatak je okej, ali osim onako hitova ništa mi ne iskače, ne iskazuje da si ponovno puštam. Možda sam sada okrutan za ocijenu, ali nije to album baš za mene, ali to ne znači da nije kvalitetan.

The vocals are very strong and expressive, the songs are catchy, and the music is competent. But there's something I've never been able to stand about her music. Her voice grates on me, and the style feels like a boring pastiche of soul and vocal jazz, when I'd infinitely rather go back and listen to Billie Holiday or something. 2/5

Never understood the fuss about this artist, a fair voice but not great

I don't know what it is, but I just can't get into Amy Winehouse. I think it's the vocal style. Nothing in it sounds "bad", but IDK. I would like it better with a different vocalist. Instrumentation is fine.

JA SITTEN TULEE VIIMEINEN BIISI, missä äänet on 40% kovemmalla kuin muissa, niin jäi kyllä todella paska maku koko tekeleestä. Amyn ääni hyvä, mutta ei yksi hyvä instrumentti pelasta tätä.

An unbelievably overrated artist and album. A couple of decent songs and headlines that wanted everyone to believe this is the second coming of Aretha Franklin (you know, a white brittish woman). I just dont get the hype. But thats just like, my opinion, man.

Never listened to her music before, and the only real exposure I had to her music is the Richard Cheese cover of Back to Rehab. I like his version much better. I find it hard to relate to a junkie that just needs drugs to survive... albeit not for long.
