Reviews (page 11 of 15)
Very good. I very much could see how they inspired / were inspired by the Beatles and other rock bands of this era.
Damn it. I don't want to like the Beach Boys. My life would be so much more easier in terms of music, if I didn't have to reconcile my complete distain for their sound and lyrical content, and then this album comes up. The production on this album is like no other that I've heard. God Only Knows is like one of the best songs I've ever heard. There are a few very sleepy songs on here though, that really drag this thing down the tubes. Overall, though this is an establishment of the Beach Boys as something a bit more relevant in the landscape.
Two all time classic tracks save this album from just being average
Possibly the most overrated album of all time, but still very good
Proper good
Very cute country boy songs!

This album was an interesting listen, while I find the instrumentation quite good on all the more upbeat songs, the sadder more emotionally driven songs with exceptions of Caroline, no sounded less pleasurable and found the song you still believe in me very unlistenable the first time around. However, the singing is very well delivered in all songs and the highs on this album such as wouldn't it be nice, sloop john b, pet sounds among the majority make this an enjoyable listen. While the review shows four stars I would give it around 3.5 stars for my personal enjoyment
sounds really good, i liked it
Genius
The eleventh album from the Beach Boys. Initially met with lukewarm reviews, this album is now regarded as one of the most influential progressive pop albums ever. This album was produced in a ground-breaking way, by incorporating different instruments and genres, and recording the music more like an orchestra than a rock band. Genres of pop, jazz, exotica, classical, and the avant-garde, mixed conventional rock set-ups with layers of vocal harmonies, samples, and new instruments such as bicycle bells, French horns, flutes, an Electro-Theremin, whole string sections, and even beverage cans. Because of this over production, the album could not be replicated live. This album revolutionized the music industry and became very popular, although over time. Pet Sounds has been certified platinum. At release this album seemed weird and was overshadowed by the Beatles releasing some of their best work. In conclusion, this beautiful and ambitious album of pop music was a little too ahead of its time, but it pushed the music industry forward into better production techniques, as well as opened the door to new concepts being used in any well-rooted genres. You can't find an artist that began their career after this album, that hadn't been influenced by this great work of art.
Enjoyed it
I like how 'gimmicky' the Beach Boys were. Many tiny details in this one. Bookmarked more than half the songs on this album.
album concept
Classic
Upbeat and enjoyable. Flows very nicely together. Instrumentation is diverse and fun “Wouldn’t it be nice” is absolutely iconic “Here today” is my favorite song
Album has absolutely earned its spot amongst the legends. I almost consider it a precursor to most of modern music as we know it. While its influence is unquestionable, it can be a bit simple at times. 79/100
Yeah. It's pet sounds. It's good. It's probably overrated in that anything that is routinely called the best album of all time HAS to be overrated? But, yeah. It's good.
Nice to hear again
So much written history on this album, that I feel like all I can write is personal feelings since most of you know the facts. The production is amazing for the era even if it borrows much from Spector. But to me, sometimes things are thrown in that don't make a lot of sense (ex: bike horn at the end of You Still Believe in Me... or the random lounge music of Let's Go Away and Pet Sounds). It's the Beach Boys so there's a lot of falsetto (would the band have been better without it?) and like most 60's pop you have to be in the mood for sugar and sap. This is always compared to Sgt Peppers but the more fair comparison is Revolver- 66 vs 67 are almost different eras... and Revolver still had a little bit of that sugar and sap- You have Yellow Submarine to contrast Sloop John B. Here, There and Everywhere is as sappy yet sweet as Wouldn't It Be Nice. But, the Beatles were just writing differently at this time, branching into adulthood and Pet Sounds is still written for teens and college kids. Not that there's anything wrong with that! But, it's music that you can do a 180 in a second if it doesn't strike you that day. If you are having an "adulting" day you probably aren't going to turn on Pet Sounds. You could say that about most albums I suppose, but the swings I do on this one prevents me from calling it one of the greatest of all time even though I've said just as such on a day where it truly sounded that way to me.
I understand the significance of the production of this album, but I don’t listen to The Beach Boys for a reflection on life. I listen to them for light, sing along beach and cars songs. They’re The Beach Boys! 4 for the two singles off this album
This album to me suffers from its own reputation. I think it’s a good album, but it gets hyped up as one of the best of all time, which I don’t quite understand. Still very good, just not my favorite I suppose
hang on
beach boy songs
The Beach Boys made some great music - after all they invented the whole dream pop / shoegaze genre with just one great song: "All I Want To Do" while "Good Vibrations" is the best pop song ever made ..but those songs are not on this record, and Pet Sounds is a small misstep in their oeuvre. OK, quite a few songs are classics: Sloop John B, God Only Knows, Wouldn't Be Nice, I Know There's An Answer / Hang On To Your Ego, so 3* or lower is impossible to give, but quite a few of the other songs are rather boring.
Very good album. Interesting melodies with beautiful vocal harmonies, though I'm not a huge fan of the high falsetto vocals.
the beach boys unique harmony sound is one of a kind and the songs dont bore even after so many years
Not only was it a concept album, but it was full of eccentric sounds and the songs seemed like collages obtained with a painstaking art of editing, making use of a small orchestra. Nice but little overrated. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B
Brilliant ! 4*
Great
Such a great album all the way through. Some truly classis songs like God only knows and wouldn't it be nice
A classic. And very good.
ahead of its time
A classic. One of the staples of pop music.
I've always liked this album, but never loved it. It's unquestionably the height of Brian Wilson's song writing before his mental health issues overcame him. It was inspired by Rubber Soul, which is a much funner album to listen to, and it doesn't reach the heights that the Beatles would reach with their subsequent albums. In isolation, all of the songs are good and the harmonies are excellent. It just is not an album that inspires me when I listen to it. Great, but not that interesting 4/5
7/10
8/10. Solid album overall, with a few stand out classics like Sloop John B
There are a couple of classics on this but also some really mediocre songs. 8
Classic, Yes. Genius, No.
Great album, but not sure it's the masterpiece many claim.
-1st one -Light & happy -"God Only Knows" & "Wouldn't it Be Nice" -Shift from teenage early 60's rock and roll to more "grown up"
Great Album.
Sounds like a symbol of its era, aged well and interesting to listen to. I will probably listen again from time to time.
This seems a lot more experimental. It’s also very precise. Sometimes it feels like they want to be making other types music, but they’re stuck making Beach Boys albums.
Deep cuts--a Wes Anderson soundtrack in some timeline.
Easy listening
Love some beach boys, not all the songs are as good as the classics
Better with listens
A classic album highlighting the advanced orchestration and attention to detail of Brian Wilson. This holds the most touching and cherished Beach Boys songs as well.
A classic album that is the quintessential Beach Boys album with that 60s vibe.
Good album to listen through, and it contains a few all-time pop greats. The production is as good as the hype around it, but I personally don't rate it a top 10 album because it's just not my style at the moment. Compared to the Beatles, I find it a little too far over on the pop side to listen that regularly.
Vrolijke muziek met leuke harmonietjes
wtf is up w album cover? I guess this validates the adage that says "you can't judge a book by its cover" The Beach Boys seemed so wholesome and so damn American that I ignored them until recently (of course, 20 years ago is recently in Beach Boys terms). It eventually became impossible for me not to concede that God Only Knows is a fucking masterpiece. God Only Knows has numerous chords that are unrecognizable to most which is probably a good thing since this ensures it doesn't get butchered by campfire guitar hacks (like me). While that song is the clear highpoint, the low point is the song Pet Sounds which is almost as bad as the cover of Pet Sounds. Was having a bad cover and bad song with the same name part of their sense of humour? If it was intended to be a joke, it's not very funny. Some of the orchestral songs don't really do it for me. I could say God Only Knows equals five stars regardless of the rest. I could say that - but I won't.
Dece
Very nice soundscape, God Only Knows is amazing but a lot of the songs don't really do anything for me 3.5/5
Some really great songs
Comparsita.
favourite tracks: wouldn't it be nice, you still believe in me, that's not me, I know there's an answer, caroline no
Great chill vibes!
I remember pitchfork hyping this while I was in college. I gave it a few skeptical listens and didn't hate it, but I also didn't fall in love. Anytime I hear the tracks I enjoy them. I think calling "the greatest rock album ever made" is crazy, but it does hold up well and continues to influence tons of people.
Now I just feel like watching a bunch of movies...
Was supposed to listen to this years ago in college. Positively delightful! 8/10
I didn't know that Wouldn't It Be Nice was the Beach Boys...
really good album. a lot of classic songs
I had this when I was a teenager... Its a funny one because on first listen, I'd say its not really my cup of tea. 60s pop can sounds pretty dated, and its hard to distinguish the good from the bad, because it all just sounds 60s. I do recognise that this was progressive, for the beach boys themselves and music in general. Listening more carefully, I really love the orchestral sections, the fast-slow & quiet-loud transitions, almost choral or barber shop harmonies. Really enjoyed some of the lesser-known side 2 songs like "Here Today" - big, epic, cinematic sounds.

I love this album! I was never a fan of the beach boys, but this album changed that. Some of brian Wilson's best work.
Classic. If you don’t find yourself singing with the harmonies there’s something wrong with you.
I appreciate this album and the Beach Boys - they were a big part of my childhood listening. Where this one falls down some for me is in the dweeby, simplistic, overly emotional lyrics in many of the songs. But I can't deny the iconic sounds and the cultural weight that Pet Sounds carries.
Very smooth, incredible production. Thanks Brian.
Easy listen. Some supremely solid songs on this album.
Classique. La définition du Old School Cool ?
Decent, good education.
Such a classic. Wish it was longer. Definitely some songs that just make you envision 50s California and others just seem timeless.
Very influential and historically important album that's still as amazing as it was back in the day. However I have a small quibble with it. I tried listening to the original mono version and it felt very bland. Stereo is just so much better. Also this was the first album I listened to on Hifiman HE-400i.
Good album. Though tends to feel a little bit same-y at times ultimately songs/progression along with general structure makes it a 4 (probably leaning more towards a 3.5)
Classic. Pet Sounds. Phil Spector was a murderer *shrug emoji*
Its long
Fun/cheery/happy music!
Great psychedelic sound ahead of its time. A classic 9/10
beautiful orchestral production, sounds like nature
Great album with no misses. Its really ahead of its time and 36 minutes is the perfect length for this album.
Very wavy and psychedelic state throughout the whole album. A little bit of nostalgia from it too as I've heard a couple of the tracks before.
First album I heard of that era. Liked it way more than I thought I would
Stand out tracks: That’s Not Me, God Only Knows, I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times Overall excellent psychedelic/surf music. Definitely checking out more of their work.
A great and comforting album, but while I can see how impactful it would've been at its release, I feel the Beach Boys music really shows its age. simple and occasionally repetitive construction lets down the great voices and harmonies
decent.
Some old favourites here.
A classic for a reason.
I am a bit embarrassed that this was my first listen to the whole record. That said, I had extremely high expectations for this album. I am not "blown away" but can definitely understand and appreciate the artistry, and can say I mostly enjoyed listening.
it sure WOULD b nice
Even in mono, this is the model for all baroque pop to come. The percussion is amazing, the harmonies and songwriting are of course beautiful, and the thing as a whole breaks my image of the Beach Boys.
YAY BEACH BOYS
Iconic album. Feels like a nice drive home. I'm Waiting For The Day and the instrumentals were my particular standouts. 6.7/10
Es un buen álbum. Wouldn't it be nice y God only knows son clásicos.
I get why this would be considered an experimental album in the 60's. And I do appreciate some of the sounds on the album but not something I see myself returning to.
A 23 year old man, deaf in one ear, high on LSD, locked himself in a studio while his bandmates toured Japan, spent $70,000, drove everyone around him to the brink of madness, plucked the inside strings of a piano, recorded bicycle bells and Coca Cola cans, hired an advertising jingle writer to pen the lyrics, and accidentally invented the concept album. His bandmate called him the Stalin of the Studio. Capitol Records responded by releasing a greatest hits collection at the same time to compete with their own artist. The goats on the cover photo were horrible and ate someone's radio. This is the origin story of every ambitious, expensive, slightly unhinged studio album ever made. Without Pet Sounds there is no Sgt. Pepper. Without Sgt. Pepper there is essentially no modern rock music as we understand it. Brian Wilson built the house, lost his mind furnishing it, and never really recovered. You Still Believe in Me opens with what sounds like a teenage boy discovering his vocal range in real time. This is technically intentional. The opening notes were made by plucking piano strings from the inside, which is either genius or what happens when you run out of normal ideas and your producer has gone to sit in his car. Is it on your regular rotation? Absolutely not. It sounds like your parents' road trip playlist filtered through an existential crisis. But somewhere in those bicycle bells and cracking harmonies is the DNA of basically everything you have ever loved. 3 out of 5. One star for the audacity. One for the bicycle bells. One because the goats ate someone's radio and that deserves recognition. The remaining two stars are somewhere in Brian Wilson's sandbox, where they have been since 1966.
Some darker than I expected. Don’t talk best? God only knows can’t be beaten though.
Chanson préférée : that's not me
Bet good
Decent. Not sure why people say pet sounds is the best beach boys album
The album sounds good but it's a 60's album and it sounds a little outdated to me. The vibe of the album is good on its own but it's still a one time listen for me Songs I like Wouldn't it be nice You still believe in me God only knows Pet sounds Review - 7/10
not for me but its ok. here today is good tho.
I’m sure there was a time when this was pure genius. That time is not now. Mostly tosh but saved by some really interesting sounds, such as the weird backing vocals in the chorus of I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times. Could totally be a sample
Not for me not my type of stuff
Crowd pleaser
Solid albumi. Hyviä kappaleita. Myönnettäköön että en päässyt albumin loppuun saakka
Solid 3, god only knows goes hard
Having been on a run of great albums, I came to Pet Sounds, one of the most acclaimed and influential albums of all time, and is considered one of the greatest records ever made. I already knew ‘Wouldn’t it be nice’ which is brilliant and iconic. And the rest of the album was, fine? I feel like I’m missing something. I listened to it twice to see if I just didn’t appreciate it the first time, but no, it was just fine. ‘God only knows’ is good, but not mind-blowing and the best thing I’ve ever heard like some reviews say. For the most part though, the album is kind of boring. Knowing exactly how ignorant this sounds, I thought it would be more interesting and sound more revolutionary. I’m sure it was ground-breaking at the time, but for me, there’s no comparison between this and Revolver or Sgt. Pepper, or even albums from around the same time by the Byrds and the Yardbirds that I’ve had so far. I give the album credit for being out before these other examples, and there’s no denying how much of an influence it had on them, but I’m not sure it’s aged as well as these other albums it paved the way for. Consequential? Absolutely. But in my opinion, not an album that still sounds amazing today. (Although I was amused to realise that a few football chants are actually derived from ‘Sloop John B’, so that was pretty cool)
Nice
The Beach Boys have the sort of sound that is enjoyable. Good for BBQs, gatherings and background listening. What they don't have is passion.
Me gustaron unas cuantas rolas la verdad, ta weno
3 stars for god only knows
Normalito
A few great songs but I've always found this to be very overrated. Gets compared to Revolver by The Beatles but not in the same league for me
165. wow
vocal harmonies are fantastic, arrangements are quite good, and there's about four excellent songs writing-wise. unfortunately there's thirteen tracks on the album so it gets rather samey.
A culturally important band/record yet I was mainly whelmed. Adverts really do ruin some songs don't they?
some good songs some boring
Some albums sound very of their time. This dates itself like a pop culture reference It's very twee, put together well, and—was that a bicycle bell? Oh and a clown horn Not at all my thing, which is a shame I was hoping it would be like the Beatles where I discovered they were more then I expected. The song composition is great but I just find that it sparks so little in me that I can't do much with that
nice mix of vocals some classis songs but still seems to be missing something in my opinion
3/5
I think this is generally regarded as better and more serious than their earlier work, but I'm a philistine and find it a bit dull. God only knows, and Sloop John B are phenomenal, but otherwise there are a bunch of tracks I prefer to skip. Maybe the studio trickery and back story have historic value but they don't really have musical value anymore
What an interesting mix.
like yeah, it’s the Beach Boys!
My inability to really “get” the Beach Boys rears its ugly head. There are tracks I enjoy here, such as You Still Believe in Me, Pet Sounds, and the major hits, of course. The total package feels a little lackluster. Of all the celebrated albums I’ve revisited, Pet Sounds is the one I’ve struck out on the most. Maybe listen #5 will be the one. 2.5-3
I have long wanted to listen to more beach boys. I think they’re so deceptively layered and technical. It’s insane how intricate their music is when you think of their branding. I guess I don’t actually know that much about them considering I am not old but still. Hell naw I’m listening to the original I’m not sitting through 27 songs. Me when thats not me. I really like this. It’s great music truly. Their voices individually are pretty meh but with all the layering it’s actually heavenly. It’s so soothing. I would def be a basic bitch listening to this in the 60s. Super solid. Not very beachy to me though. Favourite: Wouldn’t It Be Nice Least favourite: Caroline, No
idk didnt like it much so didnt fully listen to the whole album.
I think I’m missing some context and appreciation for what music was like around this time, because I’m a little underwhelmed. Maybe I just take more modern music for granted, or the Beach Boys are just so over-played in movie sound tracks or whatever, but after years of hearing how this is one of the best albums of all time, this just did not wow me. Very listenable, just didn’t knock my socks off. 3.5/5.
I wanted to like it more than I did
oldie but goldie
I appreciate the influence the Beach Boys and this album had on a lot of groups. I appreciate that the harmonies and layers of music are pretty great. I appreciate it, I do. Except for a few of their songs, the Beach Boys music has just never clicked for me. I wish I liked it more, I have tried. This is probably an excellent album, but "not my cup of tea" has never rung truer for me.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. Think I need to go back and have another more focuses listen
3 good songs max
yeah I mean it's Pet Sounds, who doesn't love Pet Sounds. Honestly I don't think I've actually sat down and really listened from front to back though - or at least not that I can remember, so that was fun. Great but not really my vibe out of 10. (except for 'lets go away for awhile' that shit slaps)
one of my hottest music takes is that the beach boys v. beatles rivalry was entirely fabricated by salty uncle sam fanboys. it is lush and pretty at times, though. 3.5
already listened to it idk, maybe i should give it a 2nd chance
its cool, big hits are bangers that the other tracks dont quite match up to
Was just okay. Vanilla, predictable.
Meh
Some very catchy songs, others that I don't really care for but aren't necessarily bad. My favourite part of the album us the harmonising vocals, those are amazing.
loveit
Nostalgia. I heard the first song and immediately remembered the 50 first dates movie. It's good for ambient.
A solid 7/10. I get why it’s so important in music history, but for me it sits more in “I respect it” than “I love it.” There are some great moments, and the production is insane for its time, but not everything clicks. At the end of the day, I walk away with 3 songs… which says a lot.
05/04/2026 I have no issue with it, it just became a bit boring. Sorry guys. Spotify listeners: 11.4 million
Done heard it many times!
Okay, clásico
it was upbeat at points but not enough throughout
Ok album, pretty easily listening, one hit, dragged on near the end.
I known only two songs, great to discover others
It's classic, but IMO it doesn't hold up that well on a front-to-back listen. Kinda boring.
My boyfriend will be so disappointed with my rating of this album but idgaf. It's my list and this album is okay. I'm sure if I was there in 1960's my mind would be blown, but it sounds very dated to me. the harmonies are insanely good though. I enjoy that the most.
I know this is considered one of the best albums ever and it was incredibly pretty, but I'm not sure how much it will stay with me. That said, God Only Knows has been a favorite of mine since Bioshock Infinite. All in all, a very strong 3.
Knew most of the songs...good, but not great.
Ouai, j'aime bien
Understood the precision and the engineering. Still old.
I know of the reputation of this album. It's this groundbreaking, outstanding 60s album made by The Beach Boys. I went into this with high expectations. Unfortunately, those expectations were not met. What I expected to be something amazing was just great. To be fair, it's Pet Sounds we're talking about here. This album's reputation precedes it but there are some fantastic songs here. Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows (Side 1 opener and Side 2 opener) are simply outstanding. Brian Wilson's genius shines here. Sloop John B, Here Today and I Know There's An Answer are also fantastic. The rest I can do without. The album aspires to be this big and massive pop album, attempting to emulate Phil Spector's Wall of Sound but rather, it fails to meet its goal. Nevertheless, this album would influence the Beatles to make Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band so, we can thank it for that. But we also must realise, even if I didn't like this album as much as other people do, it was groundbreaking when it was released. With this album and Michael Jackson's Thriller, the pop landscape was torn apart and put back together. Without this album, pop may never be as we know it today. Highlights: Wouldn't It Be Nice Sloop John B God Only Knows I Know There's An Answer Here Today
Fun album
Alright I liked this more than I thought I would but won’t return. More weapons-grade puppy love.
Absolutely iconic sound, but so overplayed and overused that it almost feels like a parody now
For the time, amazing. Not my bag, but respect the talent.
I mean it’s alright
Even though songs from this album have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, I was never really into this album. And comparing it to the back and forth they had with The Beatles that inspired Revolver and Rubber Soul, this album seems lacking held up to both of those. Don't get me wrong, the historical context and recording achievement is top 5 or 3 all time, but i'm focusing specifically on the enjoyabilaty and replayability of the album, and it's pretty low for me. Only the singles resonated with me and I will cherish forever. I've already cried to God Only Knows thinking of my father and daughter for separate reasons. Wish I knew less about it to enjoy it more for what it is by itself.
3/12 Heard about this album a lot. It's okay
This doesn’t say anything about the songs themselves, but I just could not separate the millions adverts I’ve heard featuring them. Other than that, a smooth listen but not something I see coming back to again and again
Some classics on there but a bit boring. I personally think that The Beach Boys are a bit overrated, they have some absolute bangers but the rest is a bit meh
As with most of the Beach Boys discography this is terribly uneven quality wise. Ill award a star for every song that is not anywhere from crap to just ok. Granted those 3 songs are probably better than most recording artists 3 best songs over a career.
Its not bad, just wasn't for me
Pet Sounds often gets spoken about like sacred scripture in the history of pop music, and it’s not hard to hear why. Released in 1966, the album marked The Beach Boys pivoting away from surf-and-hot-rod hits into something far more introspective and meticulously arranged under the guidance of Brian Wilson. The record helped lay the groundwork for modern studio pop, layering lush harmonies, oddball instrumentation, and melancholy melodies into songs that feel carefully sculpted rather than simply played. Still, for all its innovation, Pet Sounds carries an unmistakable air of wide-eyed sincerity that can veer into corniness — or, depending on your tolerance, innocence. Wilson’s fragile emotional world is the album’s engine, but its earnestness sometimes borders on naive. When everything clicks, though, it’s undeniable: “Wouldn't It Be Nice” bursts open with youthful longing and orchestral sweep, “God Only Knows” remains one of the most beautiful love songs in pop history, and the aching closer “Caroline, No” hints at the vulnerability that would soon consume Wilson. Even if its sweetness occasionally threatens to curdle, Pet Sounds still stands as one of the key blueprints for how emotionally ambitious pop music could be.
Sure whatever. There isn't anything special just some catchy songs
Yknow I feel like I should review this one outside on a nice warm summer day. Quite good but it did fade into the background a bit too much for me. It’s considered such a classic though.
Interesting things happen sonically but the majority of the songs just sound dated. God only knows might be a perfect song and almost drags the entire album to 4 stars.
reminded me of grandma
I didn’t know Frank Black’s “Hang on to Your Ego” was a Beach Boys cover. It makes me like them more. Everyone talks about this album as a masterpiece with all the layering. I don’t know enough about that to get it, but it’s pleasant enough. It’s definitely not the bubblegum surf pop that I was expecting.
Never loved these guys. Mad respect but not my fav.
Happy west coast pop from the 1960's. A couple of well known tracks but the rest were new to me. Still reasonably listenable to even after 60 years.
fun album! great instrumentals, loved the use of unique instruments to create some great sounds. big fan of the instrumental tracks, particularly let's go away for a while. i'm challenging myself to listen to these albums in the context of when they were released, pet sounds is definitely one of those watershed albums in rock. i can see how it inspired a lot of future experimentation. i don't think it's an album i'd listen to on my own but it's got some gems on it and if i was a stoner in the 60's this would blow my MIND lol
Another classic! One of my mum's favourite bands. Gorgeous vocals and harmonies. This is an album that's more chill than I expect it to be for the genre, but I'm glad for it. It knows what it's going for. Another album I might not listen to as much by my own accord but that I still enjoy. Positives: Again, lovely vocals and harmonies. Feels like a summer day kind of chill. Negatives: The dissonance on the audio quality can sometimes tip this into feeling a bit eerie, but that's more a criticism on the equipment at the time. Favourite song upon listening: God Only Knows Started/Finished: 10:45pm 24/02/2026 - 11:20pm 24/02/2026 (single listen) Did I grow up with this one: yes Number of albums reviewed: 2 (including this one) 1 is bad, 2 is not for me, 3 is good, 4 is great, 5 is legendary
I can only tolerate so much beach organ.
I know this is rated as one of the best albums ever by people who make those kind of lists but I just thought it was fine. Needed a song about cars.
Didn’t like it enough to save to my library, but I do like it! it feels like an album you would come across at a goodwill--in which case i would def purchase. strong 3.5
Sometimes I wonder if this list wants to expose me. After picking Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book", to which I gave a bit of a mediocre score, this list presents me with "Pet Sounds", an album that I wasn't really feeling at first, but I was gradually appreciating it more without reaching the point of loving it. As mentioned, my first listens weren't great. I'll said that I wasn't in the mood for this album when it got selected, which is weird, because the lyrics here, in general, are deep, meaningful and everything else but happy, and makes an interesting juxtaposition with the very charm, pleasant and catchy sound. So while the lyrics are interesting, the instruments sometimes aren't really resonating with me. But first I want to give credit where credit is due, the instrumentation and production are super ambitious. They used a really wide range of different sounds that are incredibly well put together along with the several layers of vocals. So the amount of work put on this project is quite incredible and something to be appreciated. However, must of the times, I think the ideas are just okay. My favourite parts are the more upbeat sounding moments, like "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Slop John B" and "Here Today". The rest that sound way slower without entering the very sad territory, I wasn't crazy about. So yes, I think this album is good, but, as they would say, "I Just Wasn't Made for This" (not exactly what they said, but I wanted to make the joke).
👍🏻
I have always struggled to connect with this album, not sure why. I can appreciate the complexity of the arrangements and the songwriting, and the genius behind it, but for some reason it doesn't move me. I feel like I *should* love it, but if I'm being totally honest, I don't.
Kinda nice, slightly unhinged and disparate?
Was better than the other beach boys I've had so far, but yea a 3
prefiero los beatles
Mi favorita es God Only Knows.
I Like it.
A 4 dragged down by one of the worst album cover photos. Respect to Mike Love at the back for having nothing to do with the Goats
No. 364/1001 Wouldn't It Be Nice 5/5 You Still Believe In Me 3/5 That's Not Me 3/5 Don't Talk 3/5 I'm Waiting For The Day 3/5 Let's Go Away For Awhile 3/5 Sloop John B 3/5 God Only Knows 4/5 I Know There's An Answer 3/5 Here Today 4/5 I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 3/5 Pet Sounds 3/5 Caroline, No 3/5 Average: 3,31 Groovy sounding record. Most of the sings just didn't click completely with me.
a classic on every best albums ever list. i'm sure theres a lot of history and maybe they changed the sound of the music of their time. it's fun, its sweet, lots of classics. i don't think i'll find myself coming back to it very often but it was a good listen. favorite songs: wouldn't it be nice and that's not me
I enjoyed this a lot, don't get me wrong, but it's absolutely one of those cases where its legacy and what it inspired is more important to me than the record itself. Many moments on this I loved a lot, and it's truly a fantastic record, but it just isn't fully for me. Just one of those things. A record I absolutely agree should be in the canon that I won't revisit frequently apart from a select number of songs.
A very experimental and successful album. Very different tones across each song. Best-Wouldnt it be nice Worst-Here today
Meh
It’s good but not quite for me
Interesting to listen to both the mono and stereo on sequence and see just how much different it made.
Redondant AF
Wouldn't it be nice is just a great opening song Some of the songs are a bit slow and drag out, so the album feels inchorent at times I love their harmonies
I could be really snarky. I could try and be clever. I get that this is objectively, universally, lovely music. But I just don't enjoy listening to a lot of it.
This album gives off christmas vibes
Several bangers on here. I mean it's a great album, genre defining etc. Genius songwriter. But a bit twee in several places and dwarfed by the Beatles. I like it but I won't spend a lot of time with it.
I want to live this but I don’t really like the Beach Boys. I’m not into the harmonies and it just feels too… American somehow? I know that this is a hugely important album and inspired the Beatles to make Sgt Peppers and also I liked that it had bass harmonicas on it. But I didn’t think it was “all killer, no filler” as it was designed to be. “Wouldn’t it be nice” and “God only knows” are huge tunes and I like a couple of the instrumentals. But I didn’t feel this is an album I clicked with. Shame.
3 out of 5 Awesome album but not all songs were winners.
It was ok
Lots of cool songs but lots of mid ones. 3.5
It’s good just not my thing
Good but now my fave Love wouldn’t it be nice and god only knows - just makes me think of love actually
Interesting album I don’t like the harmonised vocals , but do like the organ on the some tracks . Especially god only knows
5/10 Best songs: Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Here Today I was looking forward to this album based entirely on the enduring strength of God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice. Unfortunately those are the only songs that I particularly enjoyed. There's nothing egregiously wrong with the album; it's just very typical '60s music, and nothing stands out.
No
very niceys :)
It might be sacrilegious, but: I don't really like it? Yes, some songs are timeless classics, but others are, well, just there.
overrated
The first track is legendary but during the album, it tended to be forgettable. Not a moment after the last track played, I completely forgot about the rest of the tracks.
Surprisingly little pet sounds, although I wonder if what is meant here is really the subset of animal sounds, or whether the noises are so tame that they could be kept as pets. The latter certainly fits better. I don't think it needs to be mentioned that masters of harmony produced masterpieces of early pop songwriting here, but the whole thing sounds pretty dated nowadays. Overall, I'm left with a feeling of “respect, but it's a shame it doesn't sound better” and “if the Beatles had recorded this, you'd still be hearing it today.” 3.5/5
The reputation of this album precedes it, however perhaps you had to be there because I only found this album to be okay. It might have been revolutionary for its time, but by today's standards there's not much to come back for.
The hits! Nostalgic but not exciting. Always a pleasant listen through though. 6/10
I’ve known about this album forever and perhaps it’s my nihilism showing but the optimism in the music makes me recoil. Make no mistake however that this is a beautiful album, beautifully arranged and crafted. Wouldn’t It Be Nice has been overplayed to oblivion so it’s sunshiny attitude birders on sarcasm to the modern listener. But there is something about God Only Knows that remains deeply touching, especially the end with the melodies soaring. I wasn’t too keen on the rest of the songs but they are still very well made and I can see others liking them.
I really enjoyed this one! Very pleasant listen to start my day with, and of course I already knew a couple of the songs. Nothing mindblowing in my opinion, but would be a solid 3.5 for me.
🥇god only knows 🥈sloop john b 🥉wouldn’t it be nice HM: that’s not me, i’m waiting for the day, here today,
Hard to give a fair shake because it just makes me think of my dead sister. Wasn’t crazy about it before she died too.
Perhaps the most sacrilegious opinion I will commit to this exercise is I don't think Pet Sounds is all that great. Brian Wilson, feeling some Beatles-envy, set out to make "the greatest rock album ever made" and fell into the trap that the greatest rock album had to be extremely serious, and as a result, and doesn't rock very much. The formula works best on "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows" and "I'm Waiting For The Day" (which sounds very Sgt. Pepper-ish even though that album hadn't come out yet). Their cover of "Sloop John B" is a nice little song, but it wasn't part of Wilson's grand vision, only included at the label's insistence so there was a surefire single. The instrumentals on the album are supper club music. "Pet Sounds" was originally supposed to be pitched as a James Bond theme, and it was seemingly composed by someone who had no idea who James Bond was. The rest of the album are compositional and instrumental explorations that are disjointedly tacked on to juvenile ruminations of love and growing up (the only element of the album that was commercially driven--Wilson still wanted Beach Boys to appeal to the teens). Admittedly, the explorations in chord progressions and instrumentation are interesting, both in sound and composition, and if your relationship with music is examining these sorts of things, I can see why Pet Sounds might be exemplary to you. But there's a difference between interesting and satisfying, and if your dopamine receptors are tuned the way mine are, to embrace the more emotive and visceral impacts of music, they'll remain starved.
This was...something. We started off real good, but then it just fell of? What even happened?
Psy ché, très Nuggets dans l'esprit
The Beach Boys are very nostalgic for me, and I love a good number of their songs. I sort of feel a bit neutrally about this album though. I would put it on to listen to every now and again.
his story makes me so sad but i get why everyone likes these men and their music. some songs are cute but they almost all remind me of love actually lmao
Heard the first song before but not the rest of the album, it's ok
I love the music itself but the lyrics are abysmal, and they almost ruin the entire thing for me 😭
beautiful voices, classic album. the harmonies really do blend into the melody which is always appreciated on my side. it should be a 10/10 considering la epoca en la que salio, innovative for it's time absolutely, but apart from wouldn't it be nice (since you can't really escape it) and god only knows (bc tony stonem deserves smth in my heart) it's forgettable. 6/10, bc god only knows rlly does something to me
Semi solid men agera främst bakgrundsljud till annat, fint ibland dock!
nice
Not really my bag but a couple of all time bangers on it. Just fine really, probably would've blown my mind in 1966 though.
Sounds of petting my hog to the classic sounds of the boys of the beach slapping their hogs as well. Hog slappy wonderousness
I can’t say I loved it, but it was alright. Why does it sound so Christmas-y though? This album features some real classics like Wouldn’t It Be Nice & God Only Knows. Stand-outs - Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - Pet Sounds
Came out 1966, and you can tell. Very chill, beach almost simple musical background. Focuses on harmonizing vocals.
Not really what i would usually listen to but it was a good album to keep in the background
I've heard this album being cited as a very influential one and, I had previously listened to some of its songs. For some reason at times it felt a bit burdersome to me, but I think the songs are still good (maybe it was not the right time for me) My favourites would probably be: I just wasn't made for these times, That's not me and Here today
Nice and easy listen but not anything memorable for me.
Actually quite melancholic in places.
I think I've heard of some songs from the album. It was a smooth, easy listen. Might give it another try. Again, oldie, fun listen.
Cute
12/23/25 - HOIST UP THE JOHN B'S SAIL. Glad I knew a handful of these songs + they feel v nostalgic
Two fantastic songs, the rest while I think would have been great on release do sound quite old fashioned now.
Alright. Not the biggest fan and honestly all blended together and no standout.
We can't deny the creative genius of Brian Wilson. That said, the album doesn't really speak to me. 3/5 down the middle on this one.
Fun summery vibesss. Enjoyed this album but for me it’s more like uplifting background music
2.75/5 top 3: don’t talk (put your head on my shoulder) let’s go away for a while god only knows
Pet Sounds is one of those albums everyone will at least know of, it's a perfect time capsule of the 60s with that signature colorful sound and style that truly cannot be replicated. I get why people love Pet Sounds but as more time goes on and my musical journey continues to expand the sounds I hear and the stuff I really enjoy, I find myself distancing myself from Pet Sounds and regarding it as a solid album to define the 60s. It is far from the strongest work from that decade in my eyes now, but at one time I was blown away by this album and I am ok admitting that. This album is a stepping stone, and whether it sticks around with you or fades away it will never not be as important regardless if the project doesn't fare as highly as it did before. If you want a perfect spring album or one to put a smile on your face why not settle with this classic?
Meh. I get it, but with modern ears?
Muito velho, mas tem umas músicas instrumentais boas e o Wouldn't it be nice muito clean
There are some very interesting "sounds" here. Innovative stuff and I know for many people this is their GOAT, but I've only ever liked a couple of these songs.
It's alright?
Beautiful white boy music.
cool album haven’t listened to it fully but i mess with it. obviously not my vibe but i still like it gonna give a couple re listens but so far it’s a calm 7 low 8.
It’s good.. I’d like to know more about why the chimes and instruments I’m used in so many of the songs sound so dissonant to me. Some good tracks I had not heard. Wasn’t bad but I wasn’t into it either. Would give it a try again later
There wasn’t anything I actively disliked from the album, but none of the songs really stood out. The most memorable songs for me were the interludes without lyrics. (edit: after looking at the album again I did like Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B.) For what it’s worth, Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys came on my Christmas mix later in the day and I like that way more than any of the songs from Pet Sounds. Also, I learned what the difference is between mono and stereo today.
I have always enjoyed the Beach Boys for their harmonies and jangles, and I like how this sunny concept album still has an undertone of sadness. Important album, but not something I can listen for leisure. 3.5
I know that people really like this album. I think it's alright, but not fantastic. I can imagine that it being from 1966 that it was probably very influential, and that makes it a good album for the list, but that's not how I rate albums Standouts Wouldn't It Be Nice 3/5
Always thought overrated
5/10
Oh boy. Pet Sounds. Something I’ve never listened to all the way through, but I’ve very often heard it talked about as one of the best albums of all time, if not THE best. By the end of the day I had listened to it three times all the way through. On first listen, it’s certainly not something that stands out as something with a ton of catchy bops (other than Wouldn’t It Be Nice), despite it often being considered a great pop album. I do think it’s something that needs to be listened to all the way through. As a whole experience of an album, it’s pretty dang good. I thought there was some technically really impressive stuff in there, with the layers of instrumentals and intertwining vocals. On the second and third listens, nothing really drastically changed for me. It’s good, but I don’t think it’s the best album of all time that many people see it is. I can see why it was popular, and I understand its importance and influence. But I’m struggling to see that importance as anything but a product of its time. Is it the “greatest rock album ever made” as Brian Wilson (may he rest in peace) wanted it to be? Ehhhh. I don’t know about that. Especially not the original mono version, which sounded like it was being played on an old toaster despite being in my pretty decent headphones. It helped to change the entire music landscape in the mid-60s, making the Beatles up their game and everyone else along with that. But taken out of that context, it just sounds like many of the 60s albums we’ve gotten on the 1001 albums list to me, though with fewer faults than most of them. It’s good, but also possibly the most overrated album ever.
This album confuses me. There are times that I listen to it and I enjoy every single song, but more times that I listen to it and I think it's silly and pretentious. Is it the second best album of all time, like Rolling Stone says? Absolutely not. However, I do think there is something that has made me appreciate this album despite so many fruitless listens. There are a lot of albums I have disliked and consigned to the trash bin, but I've listened to Pet Sounds seven or eight times.
An interesting listen. I feel like the beach boys are kind of a mystical group in that when I was younger they felt like an american beatles group but I never actually listened to their music or new anything about them like I knew about the beatles. I think after hearing this album its clear that they have their own particular sound which at times feels up beat and fun but I didn't feel particularly interested in the music like I do when I listen to the beatles
I find that it aged well for the style and an album they has almost 60 years ! It is more diversified that many recent albums. Not something thst I'd listen regularly but it can put some Californian sun in a roadtrip.
A bit like the old school boy bands of the past. I recognized some of the songs.
I can appreciate the beach boys and what they mean to music history but I don’t ever seek out their music.
Beginning: reminded me of the beetles, I had actually heard track 1 outside of the album and assumed it was the beetles. It makes sense since it's the same decade - I also haven't listened to the beetles much. Starts so joyful "wouldn't it be nice". Midway: I could hear the instruments come in more. The wood instruments were more prominent. Not sure if that Bec of intent or as I I listened to the album, I changed the way I heard it. Regardless, it became more melancholy pretty steadily, the transition was unnoticeable. Though when you heard it, it was very stark in comparison. (Don't talk was the song I heard it the most) After that, it was generally pretty depressive, the instruments were more brass and wood - as mentioned. While the beginning qas more guitar and light. Sloppy John B, was airy and I appreciated that the music was so cherry, you can hear the brass again, the xylophone and melody but the lyrics were just about a drunk, sad man. Music was danceable though! God only knows what I'd be about is an interesting juxtaposition from the first song, although interestingly the same kind of energy - lyric wise. I enjoy how some songs are about how amazing it would be to be with the one you love, but there are also songs about the importance of being alone and what is discovered while alone Ending: the song pet sounds is a great way to start the decent of the album. I loved the purely instrumental aspect, it felt like the music that plays at the end of a play while everyone is coming out and bowing. While the music on this song can come across as chaotic because there are so many different parts happening at once, it was so calculated. You could hear each Instrument. Caroline, no. The last song on the album. A complete contrast of the beginning. The album told a story of the story of losing love and trying to rationalize it. Both for better or for worse (it's okay to be alone, but also the pleads of being with the one you love.) With the ending, I feel the song Sloppy John B is the cl2 imax to the realization it's over. Overcome with alcoholism and loss of self, followed by the song, I know there is an answer (refered as one of the songs that isolation isnt necessarily a bad thing, and possibly a moment for growth). But for Caroline, no the song was considerably shorter than the rest and the train sound at the end of the song finalizes the fact it is over, I took it as the person leaving for good.
When this album dropped, I was hoping for a revelation in pop music — and with all the rave reviews, it seemed justified. But no matter how hard I tried to connect with it, I just didn't get any real enjoyment out of it. That being said, it's still really great music.
Some half-decent pop songs, sandwiched with some pretty cheesy and dated songs. The production is interesting, lots of sounds in the background that make the listening experience more enjoyable. Based on the songs alone this would be somewhere between a two and a three, but I'm bumping it up to a three due to the slightly kooky production and the exuberance of the Wikipedia article. I remember watching a documentary about Brian Wilson and how he produced this album many years ago, and I always felt the story was more interesting than the music itself, which was partly due to the era this came from, still suffering from the legacy of fifties slop. I had literally zero interest in extending my listening enjoyment beyond the stated 35 minutes of the original album. I noted Spotify would have more than doubled the listening time if I had kept going.
An obviously influential album, with some all-time songs on it. This is my second Beach Boys album, and I would say that outside of the classics I do find that my tolerance for the other songs is limited. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is great, but then the immediate follow-ups are a bit of a struggle. "I'm Waiting for the Day" worked, pretty well for me, but I found pretty early on I was just waiting for "Sloop John B" and "God Only Knows" to make an appearance so I could go home. After that there are moments that I enjoyed, but largely it was more interesting just to hear where groups like The Beatles took some ideas, than it was listening to the songs themselves.
It was fine, some big hits but didn't get me too excited.
This album was definitely something new for its time (1966) Starting with first song it sets high standard and determines the mood of future material. However, rest of the songs were less attractive for me. I left 4 songs for “second chance” Album has a lot of orchestra additions which make it sound rich.
Some classic songs and always great interesting harmonies. But a lot of songs that aren’t really earworms and are ultimately forgettable for me. Leaves me waiting for the familiar melodies, but nothing to dislike either. I’d say 3/5
It's decent at best. Every track sounds the same, and nothing really stands out. Favourite Track(s): You Still Believe In Me Least Favourite Track(s): Sloop John B
I know this is a groundbreaking album and I respect the iconic music that changed the landscape of pop music forever; but the easy going pop music with dreamy vocals isn’t any more attention grabbing for me just because it’s high art and sophisticated music with immense production value and introspective/trippy lyrics. Though it’s still enjoyable and fun. But I more so understand how influential it was by inspiring the fully cohesive and concept albums that followed. Essentially, better albums have come since, but this was one of the first and can holds up well considering it’s mid 60s.
Was OK, but don't get the hype.
Blink and it's gone. Very whatever.
nice, easy to listen to
