Reviews (page 13 of 15)

wouldn't it be nice to tirarla un po' meno per le lunghe? così eh, just a thought

I'm torn on this one, Pet Sounds is a staple of 'all-time' Top 100/250/500, etc. lists (though I'm not sure why). If I review this purely based on what I hear then I'm probably somewhere around a 6/10. If I review this based upon the hefty praise heaped onto the album and how it severely fell short of my expectations due to it being so lauded, I'm probably closer to a 3/10. I'm going to pretend I'd have never heard of this one before. For as many golden hits (God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice) appear on this album, there are twice as many 'woe-is-me' snooze-inducers. Pet Sounds has plenty of polish but equal amounts of pomposity and I cannot for the life of me understand why it's so revered by the masses. Overall Score: 6.2/10

Wouldn't it be nice is catchy. Rest is indifferent to me.

Given how many references to this album are peppered through the other Wikipedia entries for other Beach Boys albums in this collection, I knew it was just a matter of time before we landed the apparently legendary "Pet Sounds". I was hoping it would be a revelation, or at least the album that would help me understand the widespread obsession with the band, but alas I remain ignorant and unworthy (and utterly floored by how voluminous the Wikipedia entry is--I suspect this may actually be the longest entry we'll get from all the albums in the collection). I hadn't heard most of the songs from this album, and I'd be hard-pressed to distinguish them from each other, although I do recognize that there's quite a bit less beach and cars on the album, but plenty of girls/women. I also found the sole more-familiar tune a bit...unsettling, I guess. Listening to "Wouldn't it be nice" this time around had me wondering exactly how old the band members were, as it sounded like they were kind of fantasizing about being early teenagers, or worse yet fantasizing about being *with* very under-aged teenager-ish girls. I'm very confident they didn't mean to insinuate that, but it feels like a *lot* of Beach Boys songs are trapped in a horrible mid-teens amber, never moving forward or branching out (and I know that generalization may not exactly apply as much to this album). I'd guess at least some of the Boys also felt similarly trapped, especially as the band disintegrated over the years and Brian Wilson floated in and out. I'll give them credit (or maybe mainly Brian Wilson, since he seems to have felt that this was a solo album) that this album had a lot of Beatles-inspired music arrangement, so there's a bit more variety in the songs than just harmonies and organ/keyboard surf sounds. Regardless, despite Brian Wilson's hope that this would be "the greatest rock album ever made", I just couldn't get into much of it at all. I'm sure it's blasphemy to give it only three stars, but I was close to just doling out two stars, but "Sloop John B" singlehandedly saved it from that fate. And now, only one more Beach Boys album to go ("Surf's Up")--yay!

To me, this album seems kind of soulless and just, meh! I'll give it three stars in recognition of the fact that the beachboys were a big deal back in the day, but I won't seek this album out again.

# 360 : They've done a pretty decent job, it's ok, if overrated. I like the hits of course, but Because It's up there on everyone's "Greatest Albums" lists, we are supposed to like it, but I'm not sure it's all that!. The songs tend to drag and are not particularly rocking or particularly chill. Second side is not as much fun for sure, but this still is a fun album and it really gets you in a good mood. Wouldn't It Be Nice & Sloop John B get an honourable mention.

It really is a classic album with a lot of great songs on it.

Jolly. Inoffensive. Something my parents used to listen to.

To this day, Pet Sounds is still, for me, the quintessential album where I’m waiting to hear what everyone else is hearing. When I listen to the classic albums by The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and so many others, I *hear* these albums that are so highly praised. Even albums that I don’t particularly enjoy from a stylistic standpoint like Thriller, I totally get them. It’s not that I don’t hear some majorly impressive things on Pet Sounds; I decidedly like about half the songs on it. But even after reading all the dissertations on it, I’m just not there with it. I’m not enamored with so many of the precious baroque influences that are scattered across it; I’m not saying that the style itself is bad or even that they do it badly, it has just never been something that resonates with me. Fuck, as much as I love “Penny Lane”, it’s never been anywhere near a top 50 Beatles song for me, whereas everyone else seems to have it as a top 10 song, and I think part of it is that aspect. And I apologize if anyone loves any of these songs, but I just get absolutely nothing out of “You Still Believe in Me”, “That’s Not Me”, “Don’t Talk”, or honestly, as much as I know I’m *supposed* to love it, “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times”. I’ve heard all of these songs god knows how many times and I’ve paid close attention to the melodies and arrangements and lyrics and at best, my response is, “Okay, sure.” These songs, and this band as a whole, do not move me in the same way that so many of their contemporaries do, no matter how many times I’m subjected to the argument that this is Brian’s grand masterstroke of describing his loneliness and isolation through the voice of his inner child. I know I’m the “wrong” one, but I’m also not trying to pull any edgy contrarianism bullshit. I not only respect this album’s influence, I respect everyone who holds it in such high regard. It’s just not “my” album, if that makes sense. 3.5/5

Familiar with the Beach Boys sound but am lukewarm about it.

This album is a lot. I get that it's deep and has meaning and was the pinochle of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. But man, there's so much going on. This one demands you listen to it 3 or 4 times to really catch everything. Even then you still will miss a lot. I'd initially give it a 2/3, but I'm sure it will grow to a 3/4.

this was nice. I accidentally listened to the whole album twice in a row, one in stereo one in mono. that was maybe a bit too much

splash

I enjoyed the fun beach rock vibe. Good time

it's a good album but i don't love it

less cheery than their usual sound

I imagine it was pretty great for it's time, but it lost me a bit in there. Still would give it a 3.5/5

Probably the most I have felt something was necessary to be on this list while simultaneously not being the biggest fan. I feel like the actual album itself is a bit overhyped for whats there. I don't know if I just wasn't in the right headspace either during this listen but dreamy atmosphere and melody mixed with the melancholic lyrics felt off-putting in a weird way. I want to rate this higher on its significance to the industry as a whole. But I couldn't even confidently say any of the songs on here are a favorite of mine. You could compare its technical accomplishments in its field to Birth of a Nation. Minus the blatant racism and depiction of the Ku Klux Klan as superheroes of their time.

Influential, but utterly overrated and outdated. They play this for sundowning hospice patients to make them think they’re driving a car that runs on leaded gasoline to pick up their 14 year old “sweetheart”. The royalties the Beach Boys have received for the use of Wouldn’t it be nice in advertising has long since eclipsed the GDP of many African countries.

It was okay, I mean its the beach boys like they are kind of like The Beatles? They are obviously super famous but I feel like everyone just kind of hears their music their whole life. That's about how I felt listening to this album. The music was good, boppy. But it was also what I expected? Which feels a little unfair I guess but it is true I didn't hate any of the music but I was a little bored. I fully understand their influence though and I have to give them points for that.

This one was alright. I’m not much of a beach boys person, but I’ve heard of this album before. Favorite song: Wouldn’t it be nice

One of my father in law's favorite bands. He listened to then in Vietnam and said it was his only bit of happiness.

Absolute classic and influential album. Because of all that, I wish I liked it more than I actually do. The harmonies and arrangements are all pretty impressive but only a few songs really stuck with me, even after multiple listens. Oh well... Key tracks: Wouldn't It Be Nice God Only Knows

Nice, simple

I know its really innovative, I'm just not that in to it.

Look, it's nice and all, and I don't want to be a contrarian for the sake of it, but Pet Sounds legendary status has always been a bit baffling to me. It's a cohesive and enjoyable album, but across its 13 tracks are two great songs, three good songs, and a whole lot of quaint but barely memorable filler that wouldn't even crack the top 40 best Beach Boys songs. Give me 'Surf's Up' anyday.

The songs are good, but the 60s production gets in their way a bit.

This is definently an album that was innovative at the time with its use of harmonies, sounds and instrumentation. We know Brian Wilson was heavily influenced by The Beatles and the music they were putting out at the time. For me this album is good, but unlike a Beatles album, some of it seems forced. Where Beatles albums seem to flow and meld together with no "bad" songs, this album has some great masterpieces and some songs that , for one of the greatest albums of all time, seemed like Wilson was trying to hard to be innovative and different rather than natural.

Reminds me of driving with my Dad. Better than I remember, but just ok. Sounds a lot like Phil Spector’s wall of music

Very unique, enchanting sound. Beautiful harmonies. Very much of its time and iconic. A bit cloying in parts. Totally understand that this was an era-defining sound and there are some fantastic classics on here. But doesn't blow my mind.

I feel like The Beach Boys are known for upbeat fun in the sun sound but that really ignores how sentimental and introspective a lot of their music is. They’re kinda emo sad bois at times lol. Amazing sound production. God only know is a gem of course

Easy to appreciate the weirdo innovation of this thing, but I can’t say I ever really Enjoy listening to Beach Boys. This is a big round up, just so no one gets mad at me.

As a kid who was raised on the Surfin’ USA Beach Boys, I had always heard the significance of this album but until a few years ago had never given it a solid listen. Knew a few of the major hits but that was about it. While I understand the importance this album plays in musical history, it just doesn’t stand out to me as one of the greatest albums of all time. Seems a bit overproduced, which maybe was a huge deal in 1966. I enjoy it. But just can’t fall all over myself about it. 3.95

Someone explain the hype. This is what people put forward as The Beach Boys masterpiece? Look, it’s great. Probably their best work. But a masterpiece? Someone explain please. Don’t get me wrong - it’s an extremely well put together record. Their harmonies are, as always, unmatched. They know how to build them and they certainly know their style and niche. They perfected it. But a masterpiece? I’m sorry I don’t see it. People compare this to “Sgt. Pepper’s,” or at least mention it in the same sentence. The story goes that they released “Pet Sounds” thinking they’d bested the Beatles, only to then hear “Sgt. Pepper’s” and realize they’d been foiled again. No idea if that’s true but it’s a good story. If this is their best, why did it feel like a lot of other Beach Boys stuff I’ve heard? The best song “God Only Knows” feels pretty unassuming and shorter than expected. I think it also suffers from needing to sound like The Beach Boys. Another band could probably do this in a way that was more interesting. The arrangements are great but I guess I just can’t get the “Pepper” comparison out of my head and to me, it pales. Bummer. I really wanted to be blown away and I just wasn’t. Three stars. Standout Tracks: Wouldn’t It Be Nice, I’m Waiting for the Day, God Only Knows, Here Today, Caroline, No

I like The Beach Boys, but this album is something different that I wasn’t expecting. Wouldn’t it be nice, God only knows, and sloop John b remind me of six flags, so it was good to hear them again. The rest of the album wasn’t super memorable, but it was a fine time listening. This feels like one of those times when the art is revolutionary for the time, but almost 60 years later only the big hits feel worth revisiting. 3/5

Wouldn't It Be Nice 4 You Still Believe in Me 3.3 That's Not Me 3 Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) 2.8 I'm Waiting for the Day 3 Let's Go Away for Awhile 3.1 Sloop John B 3.3 God Only Knows 3.4 I Know There's an Answer 3.2 Here Today 3 I Just Wasn't Made for These Times 3 Pet Sounds 3.3 Caroline No 3.3 Score: 3.207692308

Good, but not deserving of the GOAT-level praise regularly heaped upon it. The big singles are great, but you also get a pair of instrumentals and and some lesser songs that are just okay. It gets some props for being pretty revolutionary in terms of production and arrangements, but the songs leave a lot to be desired for me. 3.5 stars

Some good stuff here, well-known stuff. Not my 'type', but good for what it is and deserves a 3.

Solid easy listening, definitely recognized a few songs from radio play. Inoffensive and decent, pretty standard 60s pop rock. Definitely has some stronger songs, but I would say at least a third of the album is forgettable. Top tracks: Wouldn't It Be Nice; God Only Knows; Caroline, No

Really twee, but catchy! 3.5

This is probably the quintessential Beach Boys album, huh? I never really cared much for them, but whatever - unique sound and deserving of the list.

Tender and introspective

I honestly have tried to listen to this album for years and have only been marginally impressed. Wouldn't It be Nice is an incredible opener and some other songs hit pretty well, but as an album experience it sounds more like a collection of singles of varying quality. Majority of tracks are strong. 3/5

Amazing vocals that are always amazing to hear, but musically I uninteresting to me. I'm a casual fan of the Beach Boys and appreciate their contributions to pop, but won't listen again. 3/5

good fun, had a pretty good time, lots of good sounds going on here, some memorable tracks some not, but hey, it’s the freaking beach boys, this was pretty awesome i respect the insane work that went into this, pretty awesome stuff, maybe not my complete cup of tea/ type of music i’d bump often but i freak with it

It’s The Beach Boys

Andra skivan på listan. Måste säga att jag är förvånad. Inte direkt vad jag förväntat mig. Det här är en ganska mörk skiva. Mycket smärta i texterna.

Tycker "Surfs up" var bättre.

Sonically a great album just couldn’t connect with it

I can see why people would enjoy this but it really did nothing for me. 2.5/5

Beyond some of the classics, the beach boys have never really been my thing but this was a good listen.

Great, iconic singles from this, but the album tracks have a stifling quality to them which wasn't much fun.

Gagliardo, ma vecchiotto

I have mixed feelings about this, not really sure how to rate it

Not good, not terrible.

Probably one of the biggest albums I don't really "get". It's fine, catchy, and fun. But I see it in the top 10 albums of all time list and I don't know. It kind of sticks out like a sore thumb when listening to some of it's neighbors on those lists. Even from records from the same time. Something like Revolver is much more varied and interesting than the same sort of beachy sound that runs through this whole record. I don't know - this is fine.

I just am not fond of the Beach Boys, sure they broke ground here with the elaborate orchestration but the music does not move me. I do love Sloop John B and God Only Knows. But I guess I like music with swing or some drama to it if it is orchestral.

it's a good album but except a few songs it wasn't very memorable to me

Some of their best, but also some filler in the second half

Some of their most upbeat hits

This is the kind of classic that is easy to listen to, even though I haven't done much of it. Makes me wanna go to the beach and wear nothing but sunglasses.

Great album for its time - it’s just not quite for me.

I like Wouldn’t It Be Nice, God Only Knows, I kind of like Sloop John B, Here Today, I almost like I’m Waiting for the Day, Pet Sounds

This was cute! Most of the numbers are double so idk I got to be a little much of the same after a while. But still, cute.

One of the most influential albums of all time. It changed the way records were made and deserves all the praise it gets for that. However I don't particularly like it. There are too many sounds that seem to have been added just to have a sound in that spot. They don't enhance the feel or theme of the song, and in many instances stand out like tacked on after thoughts.

Some classic songs, but a very samey album with majority of songs not that catchy.

Not there best album, but an ok album

I had to listen to all songs twice because they were uploaded twice in the album - mono and stereo. Overall, nothing too exciting, nice little background listen, one familiar song and that's it.

Would I listen to it again: yes Do I like it: yes

Good music, although wasn't all that interesting to me personally. Overall a solid high 3/5

One of the most overrated albums ever. Sloop John B is the best song, by far. A lot of the other songs are very forgettable.

I know this is supposed to be a classic, but man does this record put me to sleep at times.

Enjoying this listen - partly because of my nostalgia for some great tracks like the perfect Christmas track God Only Knows, and of course Sloop John B. Much of it is not grabbing me, but I can tell they're classics and popular

Good album with some crackers in it 7/10

Wouldn't It Be Nice is a GOAT song - and I also really liked 'Let's Go Away for Awhile'. its a simple album, but i think it really holds up. wouldnt mind if it came back up during rotation

The songs are pleasant as in they brings joy when listen to, but it is not something i will look for when i want to listen to music

Good lyrics and has that classic old music feel from that era, which can be a vibe sometimes. It isn't what I would listen to on my own very often, so I score it lower based on my personal preferences, but for the role that this album fulfills it does so well.

It seems appropriate to just repeat my last review of a Beach Boys album: “I want to like The Beach Boys. I’m still not sure if I do.”

It’s ok I’m ok

I did not feel it was a masterpiece. Sure, I can see its importance and how innovative it must have been at the time. However, I felt that most songs were just midtempo tracks that didn't really rock out or made me chill.

Couple really huge hits here, but mostly this was the recording technology which launched a whole, new, exciting sound. Not much of that sound on here - but promises!

Pretty good and needs to be listened to with open ears and appreciation for the time it was written

Before this album, my knowledge of The Beach Boys was exclusively from their appearances on Full House. I had no idea they were such a boy group! Wouldn't It Be Nice is obvi

Nobody does harmonies like The Beach Boys does harmonies.

Super famous and on a bunch of top 50 albums lists. I like a few songs on it.

I love the Beach Boys' harmonies. This album has two great songs: Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows. The rest are fine.

I can see why there are people who are fond of later-day Beach Boys more than their earlier surf guitar work. It's definitely more sonically interesting. That said, once you get away from the singles (all of which I like), the quality drops.

Got about 12 cavities from listening to this. So saccharine, it's hard to take seriously - but for the few songs that slip into poingnancy courtesy of the chorus ('God Only Knows' and 'I wanna go home' from 'Sloop John B.') What a way to find out the only Beach Boys song I like is 'God Only Knows.'

I can appreciate why this album is so respected. The song writing is good, and the production, while not a style I really like, is unique and immediately identifiable as the Beach Boys. But most of these songs I've just heard to death, so it's not an album I'm ever going to choose to put on. 2.5/5

I enjoy this, but probably not as much as I should. It's solid, but I just can't fall in love with it. 3.49/5

Very nice

A classic but I don't care about them

some concerning lyrics 😐 original teenage boy music...? i like the sound, especially when orchestral bits came in.'let's go away for a little while' was my fave, and tbh any of the instrumental songs or parts of songs were fab

Beach Boys are not for me but I can appreciate their music.

4 or so solid tunes that still hold up, not into the stuff

Respect the studio work for sure, but the Beach Boys saccharine harmonies are like an eject button to the moon for me. While listening, it's hard not to get lost in a fantasy about a gang of rockers beating their asses and stealing their equipment

This is one of the few (very few) albums I remember my dad playing when I was a child. so it gets two stars for nostalgia and some very fond memories that I forgot I had! The other star is for the cover - hilarious!!

Some people shouldn't sing falsetto - probably only do it if you can hit and sustain the notes? The album was ok - but I don't think The Beach Boys live up to the hype. A few of the tracks are catchy and it was good to hear the full album as an important part of music history

Okay, I know this is an Important Album. The sounds are cool, but I think it can only do so much amidst the asinine lyrics. It's good. But I didn't love it, trying to listen with an open mind.

Iconic, but a bit bland

I like some songs on here but I am not sure if that's just a happy memory from whatever pop culture they appeared in. Mostly it is quite mid.

I waffled between thinking this is saccharine bullshit and the melancholy Brian Wilson songwriting classic it’s supposed to be. I think I need a few more listens to decide whether to bump this to a 4 or down to a 2.

The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" is regarded as one of the greatest and most ingenuitive albums in music history. A departure from the surf rock commonly associated with the Beach Boys, this album is more art rock than anything else. Their trademarked vocal harmonies are mixed in an assortment of musical elements from a variety of genres, with a smattering of very unusual instrumentation, and "Wall of Sound" production quality.

Caroline saved this albums ass with a 3

enjoyed more than i thought

West Coast Sound vom Feinsten

Its fine Fav songs: here todas :-<

It sounds like some one bet them an over under of how many instruments they could use in an album I feel like their genre is movie soundtracks They tried so many different things and still sound the same, I mean maybe that’s the reality of a band like them but all their songs kinda blend together Damn they also kinda whiny Idk it was good but nothing that blew me away

I don't think I heard a single pet

'Wouldn't It Be Nice' is definitely a classic, but the rest of the album is not doing too much for me. Still, it's actually alright for how ancient it is.

Muy fresco y divertido

Middle of the road for me. Sorry just can't put it up there as one of the greatest ever particularly when people say that there would have been no Sgt Pepper without it.

A few good songs and the rest were OK. 3.5/5

Yeah, it’s good. Not sure it’s as good as people make it out to be though. 3.5 stars.

Lots of good stuff on here. Welcome to bumble around my playlist but not gonna chase it.

I never really understood why this album is held in such high regard. It probably has more to do with the compositions, arrangements and the studio recording techniques used given the times than it did as an overall listening experience. "God Only Knows" is a masterpiece and easily my favorite Beach Boys song. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is also a great single but the rest of the album is just average to "meh" at best. ("Sloop John B" was another big hit but I always thought it was annoying schlock.) But for the two songs mentioned above this was a 2-star album all day, every day. For those two songs alone I'll add an additional star.

The Beach Boys have always been a temporal anomaly in my mind, where I see them being an 80s/90s band no matter what I read about them or which song I hear from them. This doesn't have anything to do with the album, just felt the need to put my brain malfunctions in writing.

Good. Listen 2x 3.4

Another perfectly executed LP by the Beach Boys, who have some of the best instrumental chops of this era's bands by a long shot. I will say I felt this album had some unrealized potential - the few uptempo tracks show a much different side of the band with some amazing songwriting and tones that I hadn't heard from them before. It was a bit disappointing, then, to hear the album descend back to the usual mid- to ballad-level tempo and put things creatively in park. The slower tracks are still layered with amazing melodies and vocal harmonies, but I just feel there was a moment where it seemed this album was going to re-invent what I knew about the Beach Boys before providing more fo the same.

Waiver between a 2 and 3. Way now emotional then I realized the Beach Boys were. Vocals not great though. Funny this generation complains of later musicians just screaming into the mic

Overrated to my ears.

It’s a well-respected album. But I’ve listened to it before, and it just doesn’t do it for me. Most of the songs sound the same. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is always a fun song to listen to though.

Wouldn’t it be nice. God only knows. Classic.

Knowing the reputation if this album, I guess I expected more. I've never listened to it, only some of the singles. I can tell that its good, and appreciate the influence it had on lots of things I enjoy that came later. And a few of the tracks on here I really enjoyed (I know there's an answer, especially, but it just made me want to go listen to the sonic youth cover)

While I really appreciate what they were going for, it unfortunately still sounds like the beach boys at times, which is to day, ok. Best of the beach boys by far.

Has some great songs, but also some pretty mid ones. Wouldn’t It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B are the best on the album. Many of the other songs are largely forgettable.

Wouldn't it be nice, Sloop John B

Buena banda.

I really, really wish I liked this more than I do. Wouldnt It Be Nice and God Only Knows are two of my favorite songs of all time. If only the other tracks on the album didn't make me go to sleep... It's still a 3 star just for these 2 songs.

klassiker des seichten Surfsounds

Rock critics look on this as a masterpiece; One of the greatest albums of all time. See what I did there with the GOAT reference. It is a great album, full of lots of hit songs and pristine production. There's also a lot of songs on here that you never have heard of. Good songs that don't make the Greatest Hits albums or get much play on Classic Rock Radio and playlists. The problem is, this album is so tied to Brian Wilson's quest for production perfection, that it's easy to forget that it's just another Beach Boys album, not much different than others. It's worth a listen to if only for Wouldn't It Be Nice and Sloop John B. The song namesake Pet Sounds, though, is kind of gimmicky.

I love the Beach Boys… but they are a band for a specific mood. Or for summertime. The album is good, not great and not in season right now.

I wanted to hate this album, I really did. Aside from the more popular songs we've all heard a million times in movies, commercials and on the oldies station, many other songs on here we're quite original. I can understand the hype and why it was so groundbreaking at the time. Not an album I'd put on at random though. I'd need the sun shining on my face and an extra Zoloft in my bloodstream before I'd revisit.

Ja, goh. Herkenbare nummers. Over het algemeen goed vermaakt. 3/5.

Ive listened to this a few times in the past due to its hype, but I dont really get it. It often comes out top from quite reputable music journalists as ‘best album of all time’, which surprises me. Its a good, pop album with some big songs on. But there’s quite a bit fluff and filler for me overall, and it’s just a bit too light and airy. Like every song I feel has been done before by one band or another. Maybe thats credit to Beach Boys for getting there first, or maybe its because it’s a simple tried and tested formula. I dunno. Its good, but it’s not the best.

I do understand the huge reputation this album has now, its much deeper and accomplished than other beach boys. Get the feeling it was heavily influenced by the Beatles and to be fair God only knows would fit nicely on any of their stuff. Though I can tell it's a well made album, in general it isn't for me. It's all a bit too nice, there's kind of two gears, mildly happy and mildly sad. Think it's largely just how music sounded in that time but it makes a whole album a bit pedestrian. That's not to say it isn't very listenable but I'm not excited.

One of the most icon albums not just in the Beach Boys catalogue but in general. Very wintery - with the jingling and the like. God Only Knows is in a bunch of Christmas movies. Odd turn for a band founded on summer vibes, surfing, and hotrods. Obviously a classic but a little too jingly and slow for my taste.

I liked the length of the album and the songs, as it allowed me to listen to the album multiple times today. I had high expectations so I really tried to like it but I couldn't get into most of the songs. The vocals felt like a bit much after a while

Can’t pinpoint but something ab this was pretty damn annoying to me… 5/10

The internet said a lot of amazing things about this album but I thought it wasn’t all that. Maybe my expectations were too high. There’s a few great songs, but to me, the amazing innovation that was supposed to make it unique just didn’t sound that unique. Solid but not amazing. 6.5/10

6/10 - I liked the feel of the songs but they all kind of felt like the same song. Individually none were fantastic or horrible. Overall slightly better than okay.

Similar feelings to that mamas and papas album. Old pop music just doesn't really do anything for me, and it's probably not something I'd listen to again, but it wasn't bad. 6/10

Ok but I didn’t think it was the earth shattering masterpiece a lot of people did

Found the "pet sounds" to be distracting and unnecessary. Whole album was a bit too low tempo for my tastes.

Some good songs, but the rest haven't held up that well.

I am not a huge fan of the Beach Boys, but cannot deny that they have many catchy tunes, that I like very much. This album shows growth in musical direction away from their standard beach party music. This album was Brian Wilson's response to the release of Rubber Soul by the Beatles. He has definitely taken the Beach Boys to a new musical level with this, but I still give the edge to the Beatles here. (IMO). I find that as the Beatles moved away from "The Fab Four", their music grew increasingly better. With the Beach Boys I like several songs on this record, but tend to like their party fair a little better. I listen to both the mono and stereo mixes of this (2016, 50th anniversary mixes). I liked the stereo mix better in terms of sound quality.

Ok so you may call me a heathen but I don't hear how this is supposed to be some sort of masterpiece or revolutionary sound. The only reason I'm not giving this a 2 is because of God Only Knows and because some of the songs have solid lyrics. However, otherwise I found this whole album profoundly mid. Musically it was just kind of blah and I think that's just me I am not a big fan of The Beach Boys sound, it sounds plastic and like they're all smiles and basically 60's frat boys. Brian Wilson's falsetto isn't terrible which is nice but he uses it an awful lot and there's constant ohhhhh's and ahhhhhh's in the background which I just felt was completely unnecessary. Overall it might have been revolutionary in the 60's but it is well past its prime now.

overall it's a good album. given some of the other pop music at the time, this was more than generic bubble gum sounds. like that they still have the classic Beach Boy harmonies. lyrically, you can hear some of the mental issues Brian Wilson was wrestling with in several songs.

I liked the album, but I have to be honest, it wouldn’t be something I’d listen to everyday. The Beach Boys having a few tracks in a larger playlist is grand, but after a while they start to wind me up.

A very cohesive lovestruck album. I was familiar with a few of the songs before listening. I enjoyed it.

Me gustó

Know this one very well. Katy’s dad/family have listened to it for years so I’ve grown to like it. Also biased based on a pretty good documentary I saw on Brian Wilson.

Not bad. Those guys could definitely harmonize.

State of this album cover. Music is pretty good though.

Thought this was... okay? Some great tracks but for all the talk about the rich orchestration and production I thought it sounded really ramshackle and echoey in parts. Obviously important but controversially I think I prefer my Beach Boys singing about going surfing with their best girl etc

Look, I can appreciate this album for it’s place in history but it was just a bit of a snore for me. Except for Sloop John B. And I like The Beach Boys! But wouldn’t be on rotation for me.

Things I don't like: falsetto, fading out at the end of songs, and so many ooohs and aaahs. Things I do like: meaningful lyrics, good rhythm This album was bold for sure. Musical talent here is unquestionable. So creative with the choice of instruments. It is not enjoyable to listen to with the ooohs, aaaahhs, and falsetto. I wonder how it would sound with no falsetto. I imagine this album would be more enjoyable for me at "An Evening with The Beach Boys" where there was no expectation of dancing.

A lot of good tunes but only a couple really stood out. Overall enojed it. Really has that late 60 acid vibe.

This was cool, nice to listen to other music from the 60s besides the Beatles. For as much acid as these guys took the subject matter still mostly revolved around getting the girl back. They also have nice voices.

Fun. The hits I knew were fun, the rest seemed a little dated

Decent album. Wouldn’t listen to it in the regular as it’s best songs are on adverts

50 First Dates! I determined that this album sounds like the Beach Boys.

Fallout 76 ❌ Beach boys ✅

I would never seek out and listen to The Beach Boys of my own accord. Nothing about this album really stuck out as bad, just not my speed.

A few good songs but not really style.

not the best album ever, great production, one really great song, the rest is ok. 3/5

i was struck by the instrumental arrangements as well as the vocal harmonies, on some off the songs, not all. maybe another listen. loved the unexpected interval on i may not always love you. some of the lyrics are so simple as to be bland expressions of how the singer is feeling (sad).

I can't say I'm all in on this one. Tried to listen again with a totally open mind, just doesn't grab me. I do understand it's ground breaking brillance but it's just not my bag

Classic Beach Boys album Some great hits from the old days not a great workout album though lol

I see the love for this album. Absolute masterclass in composition. Way ahead of it's time. Obvious classics include: Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, God Only Knows. Not sure if it's an album that I will keep coming back to for the entirety, even though it is a short album.

Kind of my growing up soundtrack. Gotta love it.

Okay this is neat.

Clearly a few great songs on this album but there is also many that Just don’t do it for me. It’s a weird album.

3/5 i can definitely understand the appeal, and for its time it’s incredibly influential even today but looking back its just meh to listen to... couple good tracks, majority filler and forgettable.. meh

I know that it's regarded as a creative landmark, but I just don't get the fawning. The songs range from great to fine, with one bona fide dog ("Sloop John B"), so the adulation is mostly about the the production and arrangements, which allegedly aimed to compete with The Beatles, but... really?...

I never really *got* the Beach Boys, but catchy, and a bit dissonant. Even though it sounds happy, there's a lot of heaviness underneath. Feels like living in LA. I heard it referred to as "church" pop. And I read arguments that it's a concept album, which I think I agree with.

A bit bland. Saw them live in a 9/11 anniversary concert in Chicago only two of the original band but very authentic sound still

Just meh

I have mixed feelings about this album. Some of the tracks are terrible, I just have to skip them. And then there's "Wouldn't it be Nice" which is great. My enjoyment: 2/5 Did it belong on this list: 5/5

I think I don't get it.

Had never really listened to the Beach Boys before and was suprised by how much I liked this. The album was fun and felt like the right length.

Sadder than expected, and honestly a bit underwhelming. Typical Beach Boys sounds but only Wouldn't It Be Nice is very memorable

I've always heard that this was the best BB album. If you listen to just one album, listen to this one. Ok? It starts off with a very familiar song and for me drops off immediately . It's a good album but very lack luster for me. The number of members in this band doesn't match the amount of music on these songs. They should sound way more bold and filling for the number of members.

Beatlesy at points, very of the times

Not bad, but a bit winey

Confession: I don’t love The Beach Boys. I know that this album is often considered the most important in rock history. And I certainly cannot deny Brian Wilson’s influence on bands that I love dearly. But mostly I think this band is goofy. This may not be a valid criticism, but this music is squeaky clean. Frankly it belies the psychosis of its creator. And I don’t know how many songs about boats or surfing the average person truly needs to listen to. But they’re all here. I’ll give it credit for its influence. But I have tried and tried to like this band, and with few exceptions I just can’t. But, we’re rating albums and not the groups themselves. Incredible harmonies and some sonically interesting stuff here right from the get-go. Maybe it’s revolutionary? I dunno. 2.5/5.

Some great tracks on here but the rest did very little for me. Best tracks: Wouldn’t It Be Nice, God Only Knows Worst track: I’m Waiting For The Day

dont get it yet

The Beach Boys has some good songs, but they're not my favourite band. This album feels pretty much like our last record, 'Off The Wall' with Michael Jackson, which had 2 smash hits and then the rest was pretty meh. That's how I feel about this as well; 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' and 'God Only Knows' are stellar, but the rest is pretty forgettable. Just like I did with the MJ record, I'm going to give this a strong 3, where the good songs push it up and the rest drags it down.

a silly fun little time

Nice album, good old 60s feel

overrated as fuck 6/10

#21. This album is fun. It's very of its era, but I like it anyway. 3/5: acceptable

A little repetitive but happy sounding and bright

God only knows is great and the Boys excel in songs in the round. Wouldn't it be Nice is indicative of the hits they would eventually produce. But this early work album is filled with mostly forgettable or annoying songs.

Not for me but it’s hit songs are iconic.

Some classic songs you've heard on the radio

This album is a known classic. But it’s still The Beach Boys.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice - Wel leuk nummer You Still Believe In Me - Op het einde een beetje veel ahhhahahah That’s Not Me - Dit nummer zou ik wel kunnen luisteren Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - Heeel langzaam, maar wel grappig I’m Waiting For The Day - Prima nummer om naar te luisteren Let’s Go Awat for Awhile - weinig tekst, maar opzich wel leuk melodietje Sloop John B - Hij wil naar huis toe God Only Knows - Klassieker, maar wel echt een leuk nummer I Know There’s an Answer - Beetje saai Here Today - Niet geweldig I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times - … 3/5

A lot of screechy guitar and whiney love songs. It was okay. The overall sound is good for background music but not something I would go out of my way to listen to.

Hyvä albumi! Kolme puol!

Surprisingly good. Like a poor mans Beatles.

Overrated but there is a small handful of great songs

Was a hoot just not for me. Best song was “Wouldn’t it be nice”

It was fine. The hits were good but the rest didn't shake me to my core

I've listened to this already its alright

Not really my thing, harmless enough though.

Solid 3.

first song rocks, rest isn't as interesting. strong melodies and interesting stereo mix. It's not my favourite but it's technical prowess and historic value makes it rightfully an album on the list

1. Wouldn’t It Be Nice -- this is a bop but it reminds me of the cadbury ads haha 2. You Still Believe in Me - i didn't mind this one, it was dreamy 3. That’s Not Me - this one was nice and i liked the lyrics 4. Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) - a little boring 5. I’m Waiting for the Day - the lyrics are a little unhinged jk and the outro is boppy 6. Let’s Go Away for a While - was an instrumental but I liked the music. very 60s 7. Sloop John B - boppy 8. God Only Knows - their other hit and it was easy to listen to 9. I Know There’s an Answer - i like the lyrics and it's jazzy 10. Here Today - i liked it, it had a really cool instrumental 11. I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times - i really love the lyrics of this one, kinda relatable and it's a sad bop. 12. Pet Sounds - instrumental 13. Caroline, No - too ballady but a good closer

Sweet harmonies, layered arrangements, lovelorn and heartfelt lyrics. A couple of all-time classic singles. As much as I love the Beach Boys sound, I just don't think it's one of the best albums ever - as the critics seem to think. I don't reach for Pet Sounds when I want to hear summery Beach Boys (that would be "20 Golden Greats") Nevertheless, Pet Sounds was a significant songwriting and production change and done well. 3.5 out 5

I understand why people praise this album, but outside of the hits I don't necessarily love listening to it. Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Sloop John B, etc are great songs but the rest just doesn't draw me in. I give this a 5 on production value but a 3 on listenability.

This is the legendary album 'Pet Sounds'?! What's up with all the dirges on the first half?? It picked up but honestly guys come on

One of my fav albums of the period, really love the orchestration

There is a certain inevitability of this album being included in the pantheon. Wilson, yes a genius, produced this album widely considered his best work. I must say though, as a fan, I like the Studio Sessions best as you get to hear how Wilson talked to the band and produced the music in the many Studio Chatter sessions. But, Pet Sounds has its place and still stands. Innovative, interesting, and fun.

I've gotta side with the group here - the slow songs really drag "Pet Sounds" down. And that's a lot of dragging. There are a few gems, and even my ears can tell that there is some unique and sophisticated instrumentation and production, but it's not enough to make it a really rewarding listen. I'd love to read more about its place in history and its influence, but the Wikipedia page is by far the longest I've ever seen for an album, and that's gonna put me to sleep faster than listening to the album did.

God Only Knows is a masterpiece. However, I mostly dislike vocals sung entirely in falsetto so some of the slow songs I find to be grating. They are at their best when the tempo is a little faster.

💅🏿

It's fine. I like a couple of the tracks but struggle to listen to an entire album of it.

Beetje Queen Beatle combinatie

Couple really good songs, and more songs that didnt really move me at all.

Very good, feel like I'm missing something in it though

nice, did miss a whinny or neigh here and there. not very thematic.

the beach boys' pet sounds is probably more of an okay album by today's standards, but its existence in 1966 was much more groundbreaking. still, looking back on the beach boys' evolution through the years is fascinating. they didn't completely sever their connection to their original sound; these songs aren't as happy-go-lucky (and don't contain surf references), but they do have that saccharine quality that makes their music such easy listening. regardless, they are straddling their original sound and their newer, more mature sound here. "god only knows" is one of the most beautiful songs of all time, and it isn't a song that could have come out earlier in the beach boys' career.

this album really reminds me of my ex so that is sad, but i am very interested in listening to the songs which i don't know off here, because what i've heard is a very big mix of genre/vibe. wow okay the contrast between don't talk and i'm waiting for the day is significant, i quite like them both though. i like the instrumental piece as usual. god only knows reminds me both of my ex and gcse music which is a strange mix of emotions. i didn't like pet sounds as much as the first instrumental piece but it was still fun. i did not like the very end of the last song, uncomfortable album ending. very solidly okay album. enjoyed most songs and would listen to just under half again out of choice.

overall it made me feel good, it was chill vibey songs but again its not a genre i listen to a lot, my only 'oo this is a good song' reaction was for "wouldn't it be nice", so 3.5

I love a few songs on this, especially God Only Knows. The songs I didn’t like as much, however, were pretty same-y and uninteresting. I will listen to about half of the album again in the future, but the other half is a skip for me.

It was ok

Highlights: Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B Leave Em's: God Only Knows, Caroline, No Overall Thoughts: The Beach Boys have never been the band that captures my attention from the 1960's and I struggled to find anything all that special about this album. As a music fan, this album is known as being iconic, but to me their formulaic pop songs wear thin once you've heard the massive hits. It seems that they only write two types of songs: slow love songs and up-tempo beach songs. While that is very on-brand, most of the songs that fall into the same categories sound the same to me. That being said, the music is not bad or avoidable, and it definitely can take you back to a different time. I personally just don't see a lot of appeal in any of these songs for my personal listening outside the mega-hit. Score Breakdown: 3.639 & 3 -> 3.320

tame Record, good backround music. Wouldn't listen to it on purpose, though :D

A few good songs

3 Completely understand why some of these are classics

Solid pop but nothing memorable

This will be my second album review that features Brian Wilson, the first being his solo album, "Smile" . That album was apparently supposed to be released by The Beach Boys, and build on what they started with Pet Sounds. That didn't end up happening, however, becuase Brian took ~30 years off to get his mental health in check. This album marks a departure from the "surfer rock" style of music that The Beach Boys popularized. The musical themes went from girls, cars, and surfing in prior albums, to the alienation and loneliness that Brian was feeling while writing this album (he had already stopped touring with the band because of the stresses of being on the road). This is considered by many to be one of the first concept albums, having a similar theme, and dialog through the whole album. This was also the first album in which the Beach Boys didn't play instruments. The instrumentals were provided by session musicians The Wrecking Crew. Brian also included the super psychadelic aspects of "found sound" such as using pet noises (dogs barking), soda cans rattling, horns, theramins, bells, etc. The rest of the band didn't really agree with the direction that Brian was taking the band, but allowed him to create this album anyways, which didn't do as well as the rest of their stuff up to this point (probably because the public wanted more of the same surfer rock they came to love). The only real similarity that this album shares to any of their prior works is the harmonizing vocals. Overall, a weird album, but I can see how it was influential at the time. I am just not a Beach Boys fan. I thought my favourite song was going to be the well known "Wouldn't It Be Nice", but "Sloop John B" is a great song that I hadn't heard before. I probably won't seek this out in the future, but understand it's inclusion on the list. Favourite songs: Sloop John B, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Here Today Least favourite songs: "Caroline, No", You Still Believe In Me, Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder), I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 3/5

I have an overwhelming desire to go and buy a block of Cadbury’s after listening to opening track ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’. Oh, and the rest of ‘Pet Sounds’ is overrated, and I’ve listened to it many times over the years. It’s just the same couple of songs, rehashed over and over again for the length of an album. Taken individually the songs are all great, but listened to as a whole, things get repetitive. It’s still a good record, just not GOAT good.

Correcto. Un poco rollete.

I was excited about this one. Outside of wouldn't it be nice, sloop john B, and God only know, this was a very meh album.

Correcto. Un poco rollete.

Interesting. Not my cup of tea, however. Favourite track: I Just Wasn't Made for These Times

Yeah I know

A couple hits, but I'm not as much of a fan of their deep cuts. Their harmonies are great, but most of the album is a lot less energy than I would've expected from the Beach Boys. Still worth a listen.

wouldn't it be nice is the best song here. Rest is pretty similar sounding but enjoyable. Not my favourite type of music but not bad.

I get that the have great voices, interesting arrangements, and thoughtful lyrics, but I just can't sign off on this being one of the great albums of all time. This was a band of talented musicians whom I FEEL were marketed into lameness

Its a vibe, made me feel happy. But I felt like I was listening to one long song. Maybe I was just spacing out but I didn't even tell when the album ended (I guess thats cuz spotify starts playing songs afterwards) Overall pretty alright but nothing I'd write home about

OVER-RATED!

Feels like summer.

I understand how this was influential, but still isn't something I'd seek out. Favorite songs were I'm Waiting for the Day and Pet Sounds.

The Beach Boys have such a distinctive sound and I heard it throughout this album. I think the length of the album was perfect and each song was cute and fun and exactly what i expected.

Better than the Beatles

i dont dislike this album by any means i just think it sounds very dated and out of place in the year 2023 and also i dont think i would listen to this outside of right now so um yeah.

i listened to this album ≈ a year ago and truly didn’t like it at all but i mostly enjoyed it today. interesting how that happens, i wonder if it’s partly due to this website/project

Appreciate the craft. A little on the pop side for my tastes.

Two incredible songs surrounded by some pretty decent but ultimately forgettable material. The album lacks variety in a way that I know the Beach Boys are capable of, and the recording quality leaves some things to be desired.

Outside of the high notes, it was fine. The Beach Boys are probably just a little too anodyne for me. That being said, the highs are really great songs that I can't help but love anyway. Standouts: Wouldn't It Be Nice, I'm Waiting For The Day, Sloop John B, God Only Knows

Best Song: God Only Knows. The best use of layered vocals in the entire album. Worst Song: Pet Sounds. We're here for the vocals, not the rhythm jams. Overall: It get that it's an iconic pop album, but it just does the same thing over and over. Granted, it does that one thing really well, but I can't pretend that the lilting melodies and well-sung harmonies were exciting at the end of the album as at the beginning.

Not my style

Nothing groundbreaking here. It's less surf city and more of whatever they were trying to evolve into, so take your pick and either like or dislike this accordingly. Honestly though, what's not to like about an album with goats on the cover?

i see the genius but i think i would've appreciated it more had i not been born three decades after it was released

good pop music. nothing special. definitely overhyped. 3.5/5

Definitely like the overall sound, didn’t blow me away though. Wouldn’t it be nice is obviously a banger though, phenomenal opener and then the rest is still really good, just has a hard time following that.

It was made to have no filler but it doesn't come across that way. It feels like the ramblings of a man who couldn't adapt to the evolving musical style of the late 60s. He's "the smartest guy in the room" and it really shows. Slow your genius roll, Brian Wilson.

A couple of songs on here I recognize. Overall, it's not bad. But it's just not something I would choose to sit down and listen to.

A classic, and a lot of fun songs. But a little whinier than I was expecting

Classic for a reason, but not my oldies style for the most part.

Let's start with the obvious. The harmonies are deep and wonderful. The sound of this record is amazing. The various instruments and percussion sounds provide depth and marry with the harmonies to produce a really cohesive sounding record. A++++ sounding record. That being said, I've never really been too big on the Beach Boys. The songs don't really send me as compositions, the lyrics don't mean much to me, it doesn't change the way I see the world or my experience in it, and I'm just generally bored by the standard pop sensibilities of the whole thing. I struggle with the first couple of Beatles records in the same way. I mean, teenaged unrequited love songs in the verse1/verse2/chorus/verse3/chorus structure just only get me so far and that description could be used to describe 3/4 of this record. So, here, the appeal for me is the recording process. The harmonies are great because they don't settle for the standard 3 part harmonies of melody + down a third + up a fifth. Adding sevenths is such a simple idea chordally, but it really makes the whole thing shimmer when you use it correctly. The use of a really wide variety of instruments (both for melody and percussion) really fills out the sound. The effect of all this is that each song sounds really rich without sounding too over-produced. The focus was clearly on blending the sounds rather than separating them and I can really appreciate that. But I'm not in love with this record or the band like many are. I own this record, but I almost never play it.

Decent

classicozao, mas fora a inicial nao empolgou tanto

Look.. I get it, I really do. I get why its on this list and I really appreciate what it and Brian Wilson have done for music as a whole. It did so much for the album as an artform, the studio as an instrument and for making music more progressive which we are still feeling to this day. But I just can't bring myself, after decacdes of revisiting it every now and then to say 'I like like Pet Sounds'. I think it just boils down to just not getting the style of surf/barouqe/doo-wop pop that the whole thing is based around. Its just so twee and kind of annoying. I think thats probably hightened by Tony Asher's involvement (I mean nothing against the guy but who hires a jingle writer to help them create their masterpiece). I also don't think Wilsons perfectionism when it came to vocal harmonies helps, its too perfect and uninteresting. I think it would have been a lot more interesting and fun if Brian Wilson could just get out of his own way occasionally and have some fun with it, let it be imprefect and strange and do diffrent styles. Also it sounds more Phill Spector than a lot of Phill Spector records despite him not being involved, which I don't think does it any favours because it places it firmly in a canon of music which it really doesn't belong in. The stand out track of course is "God only knows" which is a nigh on perfect little package of emotion which I don't think many people have surpassed. A technically great album which is held back by perfectionism and overly twee and sentimental songwriting.

so wholesome. in a slightly menacing way
