Another gay sad guitar guy added to my collection. I am maclovin it
His third album. Folk /Acoustic. A 100% authentic, raw, beautiful and even tragic album. Simple melodies and soft vocals. Twenty eight minutes of complicated simplicity from a man struggling on the inside but still able to make something beautiful on the outside.
10/04/2026 It's amazing that this album wouldn't even be out of place in today's music world. Spotify listeners: 2.3 million
Been stuck on this one a while. Not because I couldn’t finish it, but because I couldn’t rate it. This is one that I thought would be a guaranteed 5, even though I’ve never listened to it fully before. I ended up listening to it 3 or 4 times, and I kept waiting for it to hit me that it’s as special as I assumed it would be. And while it’s very good, it just never fully clicked with me. I love his voice, I love the music. There’s just something missing. So it’s a high 4/5.
Not really mu preferred genre but just so chill and calming. Delightful ton on the guitar.
I’m a sucker for some sad acoustic folk.
pretty, minimalistic
It's a nice relaxed album. Very melancholic feel throughout. I didn't really listen to the lyircs much but I'm assuming he's being a sad boy. 3/5.
favs – Pink Moon, Road, Which Will^
Pretty mellow and nice music although the songs all sounded pretty much alike. I would give it a 3.5, but I like to round up so it gets a 4
pretty different than what i'd normally listen to, but very much enjoyed this. actually wish this album was a little longer cause its very soothing and raw. (love how you can hear each strum of the guitar for example, a lot of the sounds aren't mixed out and seems to be kept intentionally which i like a lot.) nick drakes voice is very nice and clear. would love to hear more stuff like this.
Would be good on a long drive, I like this a lot. Reminds me of The World is a Beautiful Place a little. Dad definitely had this on his playlist so it’s almost nostalgic.
It’s a lovely album and Nick Drake has always been one of those artists I should really like but it tends to be one or two songs that do it for me and the rest I can take or leave. It’s an excellent collection of songs though and a pleasure to listen to.
Great songwriting
melancholisch, nice
This album didn't click for me right away on the first listen, but on the second play I find it much more interesting. I never expected that I'd enjoy such sad-guy singer-songwriter stuff so much.
Pretty good I liked it
I never heard Nick Drake until the resurgence of Pink Moon in the 2000s for the car commercial. Full album sounds pretty good.
playlist track: pink moon
I found this album on wikipedia a couple years ago and put it on my list to hit and never got around to it. I gotta say, I was expecting less than I got. Technically, strong melodies and cool guitar picking arrangements are all over it. Songs like Things Behind the Sun make me think this guy had bigger arrangements in mind, full band maybe. The songs are short but I think that benefits the strength of each melody on its own, making the repetitions a lot less grating than they may have been had the tunes gone on for 6 or 7 mins. I love this guys voice, a lot. Otherwise, there's a really powerful melancholic feeling that I think is amped up by the intimacy of this being a "singer and acoustic guitar recorded as close as possible" album. It's also amped up by a lot of the lyrics. Rhyming schemes are clever. Songs like Know feel like they may have been a little underbaked, but as cliche as it comes off I think I see it more as raw emotion being vague but recognizable. I get a feeling listening to that song and its words, even though I can't fully put a finger on what the feeling is. Imagery isn't strong in the traditional story telling sense. I think Bernie Taupin's stuff with Elton John is very vivid in a more literal way. On this album, I get more of a sense of color than I do of a physical happening as would be told in a story, and I don't mind that at all. I'm gonna hit this one again in the future because I feel like I smell a 5 with some further analysis. For now, I'll call it great at a high 4. Pleasant surprise for sure.
Fave song: place to be
Pretty enjoyable album, even though I generally zone out when listening to this kind of music. When I am looking back at my ratings in a couple of months time I probably don't know why, but I really like this record and give it a higher rating than I think I would have done with many similar records. 4/5
4.5/5
Ahhh - more Nick Drake....nice! Overall I prefer 5 Leaves Left and Bryter Later, but this is still wonderful music. 4
A seminal album. I loved the guitar, specially Drake’s playful yet sentimental plucking style. I like his voice and the lyrics are solid. Pink Moon and Parasite were faves of mine, although as a whole I don’t feel very connected to the songs. This is someone’s “soul mate” album, just not mine. It failed to awe me. Great to put on and romanticize a morning, though!
Sublime folky sounds
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Delightful...will need to return to this one.
Scarno, essenziale, intimissimo
A really lovely, intimate album - stripped back instrumental, no vocal effects, just guitar and voice. It's really easy to get lost in the calmness of the album. It's really lovely to listen to, but you have to be in a very specific mood for a lot of it to hit. The album itself is very short, 27 minutes, with one or two songs being around a minute long. These were nice tracks to break up the album, with one of them being purely instrumental.
This was a really good listen. Very reminiscent of early to mid 2000’s folk. I kept having to remind myself this album is from the 70’s. Great Sunday morning music
Lovely album, maybe not his finest but still a pleasant listen
This was a beautiful album. Simple but powerful.
Great guitarist (Road/From the Morning my favorites). Vocals a little too delicate but one I could see myself coming back to
Beautiful album
This was a good album to listen to It has good acoustic guitar playing and emotional depth
Best Song: Things Behind The Sun. Perfect guitar tone, an incredibly evocative title, melancholy lyrics, and a powerfully soft vocal performance. Just great all around. Worst Song: Know. I really didn't like the guitar riff. Overall: There is a really beautiful, gentle sweetness here. A wonderfully quiet album. Perfect for rainy days, or dusks and dawns.
i was fucking around on my acoustic a few days ago, and wrote the bones of a little song. hammering on and off the low e, a few more plaintive notes on the higher strings, a couple fingerpicked embellishments, but always a return to the warm, plumbing bass notes. it was gentle, it was propulsive, it was lovely, it was... Which Will. i'd just been fucking playing Nick Drake's Which Will, a perfect little song which has definitely been written and recorded before. but i think the fact that, for just a second, i thought i might've come up with the thing is a testament to the universality, the deep, old, essential nature of the best songs here. drake's guitar work isn't flashy or complicated, but it's nuanced and beautiful. every strum feels like he's digging a little deeper into the music, plumbing another depth. the vocals have a similar quality - hushed but purposeful, earthy, far older than any 26-year-old should sound. i've heard drake's lyrics described as cryptic or insular, and maybe i'll give you the latter, but lyrics like the aforementioned Which Will and Place To Be are incredibly plain, burnished and writerly but very clear. those two songs, in particular, are very genuinely perfect. dusty little jewels. as the rating reflects, i have to admit i'm not totally in love with every song on the record - even on something so short and spare, a few bits feel inessential. but i've always had a strange relationship with this one, where i know the first few songs hugely well but don't usually sit through the full thing, so with my increased familiarity, i could easily see this being a 5. for now, i'm off to learn his songs properly, and maybe stumble through one of my own, so communicative of the power of one voice and one guitar is this wonderful record
His third and final album of that brief, retrospectively lauded career. It is also his first to be entirely him and a guitar as opposed to the enhanced instrumentation of bryter later. There is a haunted, troubled character to the music, though hindsight is a remarkable thing. Who knows how the perception of mental health would've played out without the timeless story of Nick Drake - an important work.
Approvato
Probably the prime example of "less is more". Pink Moon is such a gorgeous, yet sparse record but there's so much to love about it.
Mama Album bisschen Sonntag morgen
My first introduction to Nick Drake was the old VW commercial. I did not pay much attention to it then, just figuring it was some current day indie singer-song writer which I hadn't heard of. Now that I've heard the album, see that it's really more or less a blueprint for the stuff you hear today. This sounds very modern, so to speak, it does not feel like 1972. I think that has to carry some weight. I'd have to be in the right mood to listen to this a lot, but I could definitely find myself throwing this on a queue. It's also a short album, a nice 28 minute morsel. Not sure I would want a lot more of it in a sitting, it's just the right size for what it is.
I am so glad I got to hear this. Didn’t know about this artist. Good stuff. There are so many contemporary singers that have his style. Sad we lost him so young.
really lovely!
nice, pleasant album. i think i've enjoyed this one the most of the nick drake albums on here. favorites: pink moon, place to be, horn
Worth a close re-listen
(6/7) sweet and intimate
Man, after the first few songs, I was almost ready to give this a five. But then I noticed how short and kind of fragmented a lot of the songs on this album are. Everything that is here is amazing, and there's definitely some songs that are the full package (Things Behind the Sun), but a lot of it is a minute thirty or two minute little ditties that kind of leave me wanting more. In a sense, it really reminds me a lot of that Bert Jansch album I got pretty early on in the project. Amazing music, just wish it were more fleshed out. Either way, still a fantastic album. And I'm really coming to appreciate Nick Drake's voice. I don't know how to really describe it, but it's the most "folk" sounding voice I've ever heard. Love how he sounds when he sustains a note.
Album 1067 of 1089 Pink Moon - Nick Drake (1972) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Although it was released about 25 years before yesterday’s Elliott Smith album, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between the two. There’s a similar quiet intimacy in both. Mellow, reflective songs carried by soft vocals and understated, effective musicianship. This album is lean - 11 songs in just 27 minutes - and there’s not a wasted second. No filler. No grand gestures. Just smooth songwriting and a consistent mood from beginning to end. The arrangements are simple, but that simplicity works in its favor. It feels personal. Almost fragile at times. Drake doesn’t try to impress you with volume or flash. He just delivers the songs as they are. It’s a quick listen, but not a slight one. It leaves its mark quietly. A smooth, thoughtful album that does exactly what it sets out to do.
Exquisite late night vibes, subtly fantastic guitar work and an absolutely timeless voice. When I first heard this in college it was a revelation and while the vibes no long put me in as much of a trance as back then, i’m more appreciative of the craft and deft execution of Drake’s vision. It stands as an unimpeachable pillar of indie folk.
7/10
Beauty in simplicty
very nice, i liked it
Really pretty and fun to come back to
Nice guitar and nice songs
I like it! Is the 26 club better than the 27 club?
NIck was a wonderful voice. His best know work Enjoy!
Singer songwriter that keeps each song fresh. Gonna revisit sometime.
Sublime. Haven't listened to this record in ages but it still sounds great. A real watershed in terms of what a folk music album can accomplish when done right. 4.5.
Hauntingly beautifil so sad that Nick didnt live to experience the recognition he has today
Great album to listen to in the evening
I gotta say, when I saw this was an English singer-songwriter folk album, I wasn't too excited to listen to it, but it turned out to be really enjoyable! Nicely recorded, good guitar playing, and generally just very good. I'm going to be coming back to this one a lot, I think.
Good on a rainy November day.
Particularly liked Parasite. Good road tripping music. Nick Drake seems romantically depressed. Real.
Acoustic guitar, nice stuff. Listened while in the airport taking notes for a bit. Should listen again...
217/1089 a nice and chill folky album. i quite enjoyed this one. didn’t necessarily blow me away but it could grownon my more with some more listens. I quite liked the short songs format for this genre, it made it flow very smoothly faves: Road, From the Morning, Place To Be, Which Will 70/100
Cutesy lil sad folk album, right up my alley
It wasn’t as varied as the previous album of his that we had, but I liked the more minimalist arrangements. Really lets his voice and the guitar shine. Fav song: Place to Be Least fav: Know
Decent vocals and quite calming overall which is nice. Guitar is alright too. The cover is not quite my thing but I appreciate the artwork. Quite samey. Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song - things behind the sun Least fav - road
This was the first album I ever rated when I first attempted this list, I gave it four stars, my favourite song was Parasite. Now when I listen to it I'm bought back to walking home in the dark on a clear night having just submitted a draft of my dissertation letting this beautiful voice calm me down. Favourite: Parasite Least: Road
Nice background
I played this more than a few time in the car but I don’t think I got the whole sense of the album. I think I need to sit and take in the lyrics. Great to listen to though, such a mellow sound.
Oh, this one was nice. Acoustic guitar and singing. Very short album, but really nice. Very chill. I don't hear lyrics very well when I listen to music, so I'm usually here for the vibes alone. From reading others' reviews, it sounds like the lyrics are profound. I was always the one who had to read the inserts of all my albums as a young person, and I'm still like that today, and I've always been a little out of the loop when it comes to poetry analysis, sadly, so I'll just have to take other people's words for it. The vibes are top-notch, and it is a shame he left the world at such a young age. I would have loved to hear his music as he aged. 4/5 stars.
This was surprisingly beautiful. At first I thought I was going to be underwhelmed, but there might still exist a small place for mellow vocal/acoustic guitar in my heart.
3.5 (28:22, 11 tracks, 3rd and final album, 1972) folk 2nd Album I've got (Five Leaves Left (1969)) by English musician Nick Drake which seems excessive especially since it's the album released in North America. However I did, like Five Leaves Left, come to like this short album. In 28 minutes he packs in 11 full songs (none feel short) that are sad and beautiful. I don't see me revisiting this album as I don't need depression in my life (I believe I said in my previous review this is the soundtrack to your long one way walk into the woods with a gun.) It is a great album if you just want to walk around on a fall or winter day and feel moody (don't bring a gun) by yourself. Pink Moon differs from Drake's previous albums it's just Drake on vocals and acoustic guitar. Drake had no commercial success in his lifetime (partially because he didn't want to perform live) however; obviously it has since garnered significant critical acclaim. Beautiful and melancholic. Released two years before his death (1974), at 26. Cover - Keith Morris was commissioned to photograph Drake for the cover of Pink Moon. However, the photos were not used as Drake's rapidly deteriorating appearance, hunched figure and blank expression were not considered good selling points. "I remember going to talk to [Nick], and he just sat there, hunched up, and even though he didn't speak, I knew the album was called Pink Moon, and I can't remember how he conveyed it, whether he wrote it down ... he wanted a pink moon. He couldn't tell me what he wanted, but I had 'pink moon' to go on." In Melody Maker, Mark Plummer, "His music is so personal and shyly presented both lyrically and in his confined guitar and piano playing that neither does nor doesn't come over ... The more you listen to Drake though, the more compelling his music becomes – but all the time it hides from you. On 'Things Behind the Sun', he sings to me, embarrassed and shy." Pink Moon was voted number 131 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000).[36] The album was ranked number in 2020 was revised to number 201 Rolling Stones. All songs written and composed by Nick Drake - all sounds played acoustically by Nick Drake 1. "Pink Moon" 2:06 2. "Place to Be" 2:43 3. "Road" 2:02 4. "Which Will" 2:58 5. "Horn" 1:23 6. "Things Behind the Sun" 3:57 7. "Know" 2:26 8. "Parasite" 3:36 9. "Free Ride" 3:06 10. "Harvest Breed" 1:37 11. "From the Morning" 2:30 Total length: 28:22
As others have written in the reviews below, an album ahead of its time. An intriguing release—I'll probably return to it again.
V: I've owned this album for a while. Such a great Acoustic and a voice record. When I need to chill this is one I put on.
Abstract cover, super chill jams, I don't know why but it really did resonate with me; definitely does not sound like it's from 1972.
Incredibly confusing half hour because I forgot Nick Drake and nick cave are different people for the entire run of this album. This is a sleeper for me on just listening to it while doing work. Deep diving into the lyrics I get why this resonates with so many people and people do be loving some acoustic guitar and depressed man singing but I’ve never been one for the genre. I think my enjoyment of putting this on and running it as a listening experience is a 3 but I can definitely give the artistic score of this a 4.
Pretty short, pinks moons the only song i really hung onto
Acoustic folk rock. Well executed. Favorite track: Pink Moon other picks: Things behind the sun, parasite
I need to listen to this album more frequently. Very minimalist, super chill and really enjoyable.
Huh, I didn’t expect an album from this list with a cover like that to be anything but a weird, noisy, monstrosity, but it turns out this was a nice little indie album (if that was even a genre in the 70’s).
Great listening for an overcast 20 degree (F) morning....also not mad at the run time!
Some nice soft guitar and vocals. Really nice background music. I could see listening to this record on a nice sunday morning enjoying coffee. Very chill vibes.
Not sure we need multiple Nick Drake albums on here but it’s solid. Definitely darker than the other but as original as can be considering it’s just him and an acoustic.
4.7 if i could
this is so lovely
This is very close to being a 5 for me. Need a few more listens though. Right now its a solid 4.5
Si no, resultaría monótono.
Enjoyed this one. Very melancholy tones. Sad hearing the story of the artist.
The arrangement of this album is a lot more powerful than I thought it could be. I loved how raw and intense the whole thing is. Such a quick hitting album, too.
Pretty good but I'm starting to wonder why we needed more than one or two Nick Drake albums on the list.
Singer-songwriter, personal, intimate, calming, moving, nice guitar playing.
Never listened to this one before. Great songs and I absolutely love the Picasso-styled sleeve.
I listened to this album for the first time while going on a hike. It was a perfect background. It would work well for cross country trips, and sunsets. Beautiful acoustic music. Exactly why I like this process. I don't know if I would have heard this great album another way.
chill vibes 7/10
At first, listening to this, I wasn't feeling it as it's not the type of music I would normally be drawn to. About half way through the album I was completely invested. Things Behind the Sun is one of the most beautiful songs ever, I definite favourite from the album. I felt like I was taken on a gentle, emotional journey with Nick Drake. I would listen again.
I'm a fan of Nick Drake and this album is great. It's often touted as being a definitive album, but Five Leaves Left and Bryter Later are better albums (IMO).
Nick Drake's final album is a masterclass in restraint, its bare voice-and-guitar intimacy casting a spell that's over almost before it begins, which is either its limitation or its genius.
beautiful
pink moon 1972 united kingdom folk
Beautiful and sad This is a great example of an album I would not have chosen to listen to on my own, but am very glad to have found here Melancholy and haunting and sweet
Excellent
A calm, peaceful album that was very relaxing to listen to. It does a great job of being subdued without compromising on melody or vocal quality, which is often my issue with artists who try to capture a similar vibe.
Einstaklega hugljúf
Bara nokkuð gott.
Somber and relaxing, Nick manages to be so expressive with his emotions, how he expressed his depression wasn't in a way of sadness instead it felt more like emptiness/absence of everything (damn I'm bad at music reviews)
Not my favourite Nick Drake album but beautiful nonetheless. The sparseness, intimacy, and lyrics hit hard 4 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes: 45/178 (25%) Will I get. Already have
Lovely and easy to listen to. I’d definitely play this in the morning while cooking breakfast and drinking coffee
Gorgeous. Can hear the influence on other stuff I loved as a teen, bright eyes, city and colour - that this is from 1972 is unbelievable.
Interesting backstory, I've heard this one before but I still enjoy it very much. Very intimate and sincere
Already listened, I had a phase where I really loved this album it not as high on me know but I still really like it. It doesn’t waste a second of its very short run time, it’s the better of the two Nick Drake Albums I’ve heard. Score: 83/100 Favorite Tracks: Things Behind the Sun, Place to Be
Light and breezy, chill rock. Feels like a direct precursor to jack johnson type "vibes". A pleasant listen.
Very intimate and melancholy in a way that reminds me of bedroom pop decades ahead of its time. I think the rough nature of the album ends up being hit or miss for me, but there’s enough standouts to make me consider revisiting in the future. Favorite Songs: Things Behind the Sun, Parasite, Free Ride Least Favorite Song: Know Low 4.
Very intrinsic, cursed to be a lonely one
This is quite meditative album, which really needs listening and it's not at it's best on the background of a busy working day. None of the Nick Drake albums didn't sell that much when he was still around, but they have all left an unique mark of an artist who sounds like no-one else
I believe this album that would really grow on you if you listened to it several times. After my first listen, my impression is that it is more of a tone poem. The lyrics are interesting, but the sound governs everything. Overall, Nick Drake feels timeless. It can folk driven work from the 60s or a alt experiment in the 80s, even contemporary if not for some datable mix issues.
Interesting songs Folky
Listening session: january 12th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: listened to some songs before, but not all Thoughts: if melancholy was an album, this would be it Favourite track: Things Behind The Sun, Parasite, Place To Be
Beautiful
Better than Coldplay
A stiller version of Jack Johnson. I love it. 4/5
Very chill, unknowingly had two songs downloaded off the album already. Fave was Parasite. Bit repetitive but short. 4
Never heard of this before but his songs are great, melodies are simple, liked his lyrics, overall very likeable with the exception of a couple songs, fav is “Place to be”
Rainy day or Sunday morning mood music.
Beautiful folk ❤️❤️
Ahead of his time. Obvious influence on more current artists.
Surprising how much i enjoyed this one.
Very soothing sound instrument and Quailty Of music was recorded very well The harmony and the vocal are very relaxing, easy listening for a Sunday morning with some coffee
One of his best
amazing but wouldnt replay very so often
On an oddly warm winter day I enjoyed listening to this as the sun set walking around a beautiful lake.
Beautiful, relaxed, coffee shop vibes, really pleasant listening.
Folk album that’s a 4 (and close to a 5)? Incredible things are happening
No idea what to expect. Excited! Okay I loved this WAYYY more than I thought I would???? Obsessed with the guitar, super chill.
Soulful and melodic, Nick Drake has coffee shop music down, even if it wasn’t quite called that yet. Just him and a guitar telling stories and imparting feeling. It’s easy for his music to fall into the background, but that’s due to his raspy voice and acoustic guitar. It’s a very cozy album to listen to. I can’t say as to what any given song was about, but I enjoyed the vibes that each imparted.
I have heard some Nick Drake tunes popping up on acoustic playlist, in film soundtracks - where his melancholy does the work for the director - but had not sat down to listen to an album of his. Glad I have. Beautifully bare and melancholy, appreciation increased after learning about his life. His sound is often copied now that I thought he was a modern artist - no idea this was written in 1972 and he died 2 years later. Glad he is getting posthumous recognition, but so very sad.
An enjoyable album. A little softer, more emotional, but enjoyable.
a pretty good album! need to give it more attention, but it was good!
I thought this would be a depressing slog. And while the subject matters might be “sad bastard,” the album itself is quite beautiful. Kind of reminded me of Chris Bell from Big Star.
Fav from album was Road
Knowing a bit about the Nick Drake story, this album is beautiful & heartbreaking all at once. The stripped back production makes this album feel like exposing an open wound to the world.
A very calming, raw album with beautiful lyrics. Favourite track: Which Will
This is the closest the list has gotten to a 5/5 from an album I've never heard before. I don't know exactly what would tip it over the edge - honestly it would probably get there if I had some nostalgia wrapped up in it. I don't think there's another song that hits as hard as the title track (which is the only one I knew before this listen) but I enjoyed it all throughout. Maybe Parasite or Free Ride? The sparse production makes for a really interesting mood - if it weren't executed so well it would just be coffee shop music. The writing is interesting, the guitar work is great, his voice is incredibly smooth. The guitar is frequently a little rough in the right ways (the buzzing and percussive plucking sounds you hear on tracks like Free Ride) and occasionally unpleasant (the exact same effect in Know). I'm going to listen to this more and there's definitely a world in which I come back and bump this up to a 5.
Love this bad boy, acoustic greatness
i love it. papakinggan ko siya ulit.
Really nice record. Vocals and guitar are very relaxing and calming, just nice and chill folk music. Nick’s voice is very distinct, airy, and soft. The tunes he plays are well sequenced and produced and the lyrics complement it very well. Really enjoyed this one.
I am a Nick Drake fan. His guitar work and voice were plenty to keep me coming back, not to mention his songwriting skills.
love the guitar , love the folk , love the rock - balanced well i don’t like british people - accent thing , sound thing ?? at least not too much , he’s cool ig simple but effective yearner beautiful lyrics making me think about my life :| i want to drive through mountains , see green touch a lake sounds real , like resonance idk no surprises source ? :o
Late night listening, or on a walk
It took me all 28 minutes of this album to finish scrapping the ice from my car windows. If I had listened to anything but this extremely calming album, I may have punched a hole in the windshield.
I already knew this album but never listened to it all the way through. Loved horn, an interlude is always great. Not much variety, but that makes for a very cohesive album.
This is not what I would normally check out, but that’s the purpose of the generator, right. This album had a somber beauty to it (probably because of Nick Drakes mental state) and would be a good vibe for a melancholy today. The melodies and guitar melodies/tunings were quite interesting. 4/5
Excellent singer-songwriter album 4/5
Listened to this on a cold, rainy morning
what a mood.
Melancholy, understated, moving
Gentle, mellow music.

Melancholic
Soft rock - soothing
Very chilled and relaxed vibe, set the tone for my day, really liked it
Really enjoyed this quiet folky album
Pink Moon is much more than a man and a guitar. The very plucking and strumming of that guitar is so skeletal and brittle that it evokes the tragic yet beautiful poetry of these lovely songs. Drake’s vocals are noticeably melancholic, but also warm and honest. This albums songwriting is its strongest quality, but the music itself matches its strength in almost equal measure.
quite a melacholic album. Perfect for a wintery walk
Instant classic
The album is so intimate I feel like I could be in the room with him while hes playing. Just beautiful, very much like some of Tim Buckley's earlier works.
The acoustic guitar throughout the whole album was very melodic and peaceful I appreciate the short yet interesting sound within the album.
It was chill and ok
Wonderful, saved
The Pink Moon was one of the most famous moves out of Len Houmous’ Sex Manual. He reckons he gained 3 but lost 6 wives using it. 4.4 3/11 Road
Excelent.
Well, reading Nick Drake’s Wikipedia article is definitely depressing. He was certainly a very good acoustic player. The album is very sparse and I think that really makes you focus on the music. “From The Morning” was my favorite track and overall I enjoyed the melancholy folk. Reminds me of an amazing artist called Cinder Well who performs similarly haunting and raw music. I will give this a few more listens to really let it settle in but I agree it’s a good album and gives a different perspective than a lot of the list so far.
"Pink Mood" is a record is built on the foundation of Nick Drake, his acoustic guitar, and his voice. The only notable deviation is the title track, which includes a brief, melodic piano overdub that complements the main guitar line. This extremely sparse arrangement is consistent throughout the eleven tracks. Drake’s vocals are generally soft, breathy, and subdued. This delivery provides an intimate and personal feel to the material. The album’s central musical strength lies in Drake’s sophisticated fingerstyle guitar work. He employs an intricate picking style and, significantly (I discovered), utilizes alternate tunings extensively, which results in unique harmonic voicings and textures across the tracks. His control over guitar dynamics is a crucial element, providing variation and emphasis within the solo performances. The mood of Pink Moon is sad and melancholic. The songs are gentle and melodic. While the album’s sound is subtle, it's a compelling listen. For me, personally, this is not casual listening, I would have to be in the mood for really listening; perhaps, in a reflective, plaintive mood, sitting alone, one winter's evening, with a glass of wine. Four stars. Side one 1 "Pink Moon" (5/5) 2 "Place to Be" (4/5) 3 "Road" (5/5) 4 "Which Will" (4/5) 5 "Horn" (4/5) 6 "Things Behind the Sun" (5/5) Side two 1 "Know" (4/5) 2 "Parasite" (5/5) 3 "Free Ride" (4/5) 4 "Harvest Breed" (4/5) 5 "From the Morning" (4/5) Total - 48 Average - 4.36 185/1001 101/185 albums reviewed were new to me.
I think I need to come back to this album. I can tell it is an album that requires undivided attention, not passive listening that can be done with a rock or a pop album. May change to a five down the road.
Thoroughly enjoyed this album, much more than the other one. I listened to from this list. You can hear the melancholy and sadness, there’s a confidence behind it that I really appreciate. I think it’s a four star production, some really cool tunes. It’s a shame he died so young.
4 stars
First time listening to the album, but knew he was lauded by some “journos” – but not in his time. Its great to listen to a "long lost classic" that is actually good (looking at you Pacific Ocean Blue) Musically sparse, simple melodies, and gentle folk/jazz chord progressions: simple as It’s just a single vocal and a single guitar. The focus is entirely on the songwriting which is quite good. It's dark and depressing. But very very good. This album is a fine example of how very good music can be lost to culture, because business interests fail at “promotion”. Almost a “five”. This is not entertainment its one man exposing his soul. He is putting his world on tape, inviting us in, take it or leave it. Very pleasant, resonant, and clean acoustic guitar, with some stumbles and drops in tempo, but otherwise very well played. Female song writer with a guitar is my cup of tea –emotional lyrics, heartfelt vocals, lone guitar and a breathy voice – check, check, check … just not a female. Lisa Loeb, Kristen Hersch but in the 70s as a man.
More of a Bryter Layter guy myself, but all three of Nick Drake's records are great.
My man Nicholas Drizzy said he was here for a good time not a long time! All he had was his voice and a guitar and that was clearly all the instruments he needed, bravo. I enjoy the simplicity of it and it was genuinely good music.
Fairly familiar but maybe only listened to ‘Five Leaves Left’ start to finish. Classic Nick Drake sound and maybe a little more stripped back and able to connect than FLL. Pretty quick songs but quite like that. Easy to listen to. Ah and recognise ‘Horn’ from something. A film? Nice little interlude. Enjoyed more than I thought and a really well rounded and written album. Will definitely come back to it
So chill
Really nice listening music
Brings me back to the VW commercial, but beyond that this is just a very pleasant, warm, folksy album I gotta have in my rotation.
Some albums just find the perfect day to match
4/5
Being primarily a 70s music fan, this seems like something I should've heard, yeah? But I don't recognise any of these tracks. They're really good. Musically, the genre is (very straightforward) acoustic-guitar folk. Nothing revolutionary in that regard. But something about it is oddly warm and comforting. Drake's voice is soft, lilting, just a tiny bit gravelly. Louis Armstrong and Don McLean – though the latter might just be due to the two artists having similar melodies/songwriting. I was listening to Place To Be when I wrote this part of the review, and it really does sound like a McLean piece. The arrangement is about as simple as you can – guitar and vocals – but the guitar is played tremendously well (as well as it can be while remaining soft and understated), and the vocals aren't half bad either. A master-class in "less is more". It's reminiscent of John Martyn, or a stripped-back Nick Cave, or a slightly more positive Leonard Cohen. The back-to-back songs Road and Which Will have guitarwork that reminds me of Irish folk. I have to imagine it's intentional. The melodies in all tracks are superb, and not a single one overstays its welcome. Not a hard criterion to fulfil, though, given the average track length is 150 seconds, and the full album is under half an hour, making it one of the shortest entries on this list. But, as William Henry Harrison would tell you from beyond the grave, brevity can be a strength, because there's less time for anything to go wrong. I'm missing any sort of energetic peaks and troughs throughout the album, what with every track having essentially the same texture as the last, but that's the only obvious negative. As another user wrote: "Each song is a gentle lullaby, and if you ever need a soundtrack for a crisp autumn walk, this is it." 4/5 Key tracks: Pink Moon, Road, Parasite
I didn’t realize how much I might like Nick Drake. Underspoken, moving, and one of the shortest albums on the list. I actually could have listened to this for an hour.
I love the acoustic vibe
Phenomenal acoustic album. Actually adding this one to my rotation.
Through no fault of his own, the first thing that comes to mind when I hear his music is New Jersey.
Really beautiful.
Solid singer-songwriter-album
Well, now I'm depressed. And want to buy a new car for some reason.
Nice melodies and enjoyable album once you get used to the voice.
70S UK folk. Intimate singer songwriter album. Gentle, laid back, pretty.
Big day for melancholy
Good all around energy and vibration. Nothing stellar but solid throughout
Of all Nick Drake albums its the only one that truly speaks to me. Simple and sparse, guitar with piano here and there and warm yet clearly troubled voice. I think I used to enjoy it a bit more, I was expecting to give it a 5, but I'm not that sure anymore. Maybe it'll come back in more fitting circumstances. For now a very strong 4/5
Nice surprise wanting something mellow for the day!
I so really want to love Nick Drake. I like the instrumentation, I like the lyrics, I like the way this was recorded where you can occasionally hear the squeak of fingers on guitar strings, I like the whole feel of the record. I am just still not sold on his voice - it's just so breathy. On my review of Bryter Later I said his voice felt insubstantial and I'm not sure my opinion has changed much. I do really like everything else though. I particularly enjoyed the song Know as something about that riff really appealed to me (it reminded me of Gomez I think). Last album I said it would have been 3.5 with half marks, but settled on 3. I'm going to say 3.5 this time too but as I like this album marginally more, I'm going to round up. So I'm averaging out to 3.5... 4/5
Solid album I love melancholy.
Good album. Tragic he died so young
The first half of the album was a 5/5 for me and the second half a 4/5. The title track Pink Moon is great, but my favourite was Which Will
One man, one guitar, and lots of discordance. This was a nice breath of fresh air. I'd recently reviewed a folk album for a website I write for. So, I suppose I was primed for more folk, but Nick Drake was doing some really cool stuff. I like his voice too.
This was a really plesent listen with some deep hitting lyrics. Kept it simple so the song meanings could really push through. A nice surprise of an album
Very pleasant
Nice somber album. Slow, thoughtful, tinged with regret. Not something I'd listen to every day, but it definitely scratches the occasional itch.
Listen again
Nice folk-ey album. Nice lyrics and I like Nick's voice a lot
--Pink Moon...first heard this in a gd Volkswagen commercial and my life was forever changed --Place to Be...heartbreaking --Road...chills. this guy somehow creates full soundscapes with just a guitar and his voice --Which Will...he’s vocal styling is basically just whispering but I love it --Horn...interlude --Things Behind the Sun...great lyrics --Know...guitar tone is more raw here. probably intentional but it creates friction with the preceding tracks. his voice is still alluring --Parasite...menacing (which I'm learning has become my favorite word) --Free Ride...things are starting to sound similar. not surprising when the entire album is basically one instrument (technically two: piano on "Pink Moon"). --Harvest Breed...short but interesting guitar diversion. probably included to fill out the album --From the Morning...a fine closer
I prefer his first album. It is completely not my 'type' of music. However, it truly is lovely but I'm going to have to give a 4/5 for this one.
gentle folk rock album, which is my go to album to listen to fall asleep on planes. Also the title song is absolutely gorgeous and makes you think of what tremendous music he could have continued creating, if not for his tragic death!
A lovely 28 minutes. Have listened to a lot Nick Drake over the years and find his music simple yet comforting. Lead off track “pink moon” is a favorite (and like many my age how I found out about him long after he passed) but overall this album is solid back to front.
Melancólico e belo. Trabalho muito interessante. Pula Unicrom.
I love acoustic guitar and fall vibes music. I enjoyed his voice as well, there was something very comforting about it. Cool album cover also. Definitely wanna go back and give it more thought while listening.
Good
Surely a contender for worst album art ever, right? That's got to be up there with those religious albums with old women on the cover proclaiming that Jesus has touched them. Obviously I knew who Nick Drake was, his story, his style, but I don't recall ever hearing a single song till now. This was rather nice. Of course I listened to this half-cut in bed, but it was nice. One to revisit. The barren minimalism did wear thin after a while but by then I was sleepy and didn't care.
I only vaguely knew this album before — mostly because of a short piece by Wiglaf Droste, a German humorist and critic who, like Nick Drake, died far too young. I just looked it up: antidepressants, possibly suicide. The title track is the only song I really knew before listening. It’s a beautiful, romantic piece. This is, after all, a classic singer-songwriter album — and you can clearly hear how Stewart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian borrowed from Drake’s vocal style. The record has a very introverted, intimate vibe — dreamy and melancholic. The instrumentation is extremely sparse: one guitar, maybe two? It sounds like he recorded it alone at home and just mailed the tape to his label. At only 28 minutes, it’s a short album — and a very beautiful one. Still, I don’t think I’ll return to it very often. The mood — a lonely, depressed young man — just doesn’t quite fit my life right now.
Great vocals and instrumental to the album. Very soft and relaxing to listen to, but a little sad for listening to all the time. Overall really nice album.
Kaunista ja pinnan alla surumielistä folkia. 4/5
You know what I feel quite bad for the rating I’m about to give, and I may change my mind later on but this is just how I felt whilst listening. It’s very easy to get invested into the story behind it, and I really like that for his 3rd album he wanted to be solely responsible for all the music and lyrics and everything, but I think for me that might be the reason as to why I prefer the other two albums. It’s so hard to be unique and produce an entertaining listen with just a guitar, and whilst I think throughout some points he achieves it, I think there are others where you’d be forgiven for skipping over or day dreaming during. So for me I’m going with a 3*, I think the other two albums I’d be giving a 4 minimum, and I hope that we get to give them a listen in this list
This got better the more times I listened to it, it is a deeply sad album by what seems to be a deeply sad man. His guitar playing is mindful and introspect and for me just depicts absolute loneliness in his own world with no space or want for much else. Due to the utter sadness I don't know if you can call it an enjoyable listen but it has some beautiful moments. For me, this really was most apparent to me in the instrumental track 'Horn'. It is so simple but is so pensive and I find really depicts a mood that has so much to say and so little to say all at once.
Was pleasantly surprised with this, I normally hate albums where most of the songs are under or around 2 min, but this proves to be the exception
A depiction of heartbreaking loneliness. I’m not usually one for simplistic instrumentation, but the quality songwriting, acoustic guitar arrangements, and Nick’s soft singing style bring me to a deep state of melancholy that I didn’t know I need to feel until I’m already there. 4.5/5
Simple, pure. Guitar, Vols, and lyrics stand the test of time when done very well.
Beautiful.
Interesting guitar playing. Nice voice. Not really focused in on the lyrics, but they seem solid. Nice contemplative listen. Also, great album cover
Very intimate album. Conveys the essence of depression very accurately in a sense of not being overwhelming sadness but hopelessness. In context of sound, I would have enjoyed more piano but it also would have taken away from the mood of the album. 4.5 stars Would listen again 👍
No bad albums from Nick Drake. This is too short - leaves you wanting much more - but excellent.
His voice is comforting, like being wrapped in an old blanket and the acoustic guitar adds to the calming effect. It inserted itself into my subconscious enough for me to listen a second time later in the day. I was vaguely aware of the title track before but really enjoyed the album - will listen again.
Pink Moon.
Beautiful!
Feels like an album I might like even more on repeated viewings. 8/10
And with this, I believe I've listened to Nick Drake's entire discography. A shame that said discography was so brief, but quality over quantity as they say. Pink Moon is easily the most stripped down of the bunch when comparing to Nick's previous albums. I read that this was recorded without a backing band too, so that tracks. Simple, yet authentic and layered. It's short and sweet, inviting the listener in to bask in this calm atmosphere that Nick Drake has curated. It's all bittersweet knowing what comes next, and you can't help but hear this through Nick's vulnerable and fleeting words. A fitting conclusion to an equally short and sweet musical career, which should be acknowledged more.
Beautiful album
Quite enjoyed this folksy album, lots of true emotions coming through.
Great early-morning coffeeshop vibes
It's a brilliant album that I would recommend to anyone. Not quite special enough for 5 stars for me personally but close.
Enjoyed how stripped back it was, with the guitar focus. Simple but effective lyrics. Road is an instant favourite.
I never heard of this album or this artist. Listening to it I find it hard to believe it was not a big success back in the early 70’s when it came out. Such a captivating voice and great guitar playing, the song writing is top notch!! After listening to this I went and listened to his other works but I do find the paired down presentation of “Pink Moon” most fitting for this artist!!! 4 stars!
iltapäivä, kaupungilla, koss, qobuz hyviä biisejä on! ehkä vähän liian ei mitään
Small side note, it’s a crazy statistical feat that I got two Nick Drake albums back to back. But that being said I’m gunna compare this album to his debut album a lot because I just heard it yesterday obviously. So this album feels so cohesive and fluid that it’s almost difficult to tell when one song ends and the next starts. But that’s not a negative, it’s like a lullaby. It kept trying to put me to sleep, but this time, once again, I genuinely mean that in a positive way. This isn’t important to the music but the album cover is literally an ALL-TIME GREAT COVER. It’s so iconic and it’s really fitting with the material. I think if it wasn’t for Bryter Layter this would be my favorite album of his.
Pretty good
I was first introduced to Nick Drake and this album by a VW commercial. VW had some incredible song choices in the early aughts. That song drew me in and then I bought his entire catalogue - which is only 3 albums due to his early death. I love his soft subtle voice and light instrumentation. Great art from a man who was gone too soon.
I like Nick Drake and this is the best one. This recording is so haunting. You get the feeling you’re in the room with him.
Very chill and enjoyable.
Like a small precious jewel. It does one thing and does it perfectly.
Beautiful.
I love this album for when I’m feeling melancholy
Quite a pretty album
Beautiful. Almost too beautiful. I'm not sure I could listen to it everyday, but it's certainly a remarkable collection of simple "man with guitar" songs.
It was fine. Im not hugely into folk and nothing particularly caught my ear.
4.2
What do I really say that hasn't been said already. Now it's Autumn as well, this bumps up on the rotation
When I saw a third Nick Drake album I thought, 'No!' I wasn’t a fan of either prior efforts...and then I pressed play. Beautiful, haunting, intimate 28 minutes where he lets the listener into his tortured mind. However, it really makes me ask why the other two albums are on the list! 4⭐️
Enjoyed how mellow it was. Felt a little white-woman-wedding-ey, but felt honest.
I came to Nick Drake quite late through the radio 2 documentary in 2004, and have been a fan ever since. Not my favourite Drake album, but they’re all great so it’s still fantastic.
Mellow and beautiful
kind of a hard album to hate, it does feel like the kind of thing that i’m either really in the mood for or not at all though. but it’s still a really nice listen
I actually took the time to listen to this album twice because it was so short overall. I can’t quite decide where I land on it. Part of the reason I listened twice was because I barely paid attention the first time. Drake’s voice and guitar work are nice, but they just didn’t make a strong first impression. The second time I listened I enjoyed it much more. I could feel the soul in the compositions, and the very light piano helped to complete the experience. I don’t know that I would specifically go back for this album, but I can hear the influence ripple forward through time.
Especially after learning about Nick Drake's story, I don't know what it says about me that a lot of this album speaks to me. It's kind of heartbreaking how beautiful some of these tracks are. I feel like it can be a soundtrack to my lower moments, as weird as that may be. Favorite track would be "From the Morning," with its hopeful nature of taking the good with the bad in life.
Lovely, as always
Love this album. Nick Drake is one of the architects of modern folk, and his phrasings, tunings, and attack are some of the most gorgeous in acoustic players. 8/10
Threadbare, intimate, powerful. Those are the words that come to mind when I think back to this beautiful album. Favorite track: Things Behind the Sun
I really enjoyed it not something I’d normally listen to. I will have to find out more about nick drake. Edit I looked up Nick Drake and how tragic how sad if only he were recognised while still alive
A wonderful album.
Excelente!
This is not casual music to be enjoyed. This is dark poetry to be experienced. As I listened to each song on my second playthrough, I followed along by reading the lyrics (http://www.nickdrake.com/main_lyrics_page.html), and that really enhanced the art. Without that added effort, most of this album would have been inaccessible (as it was during my first listen) due to the weak, breathy vocals and instrumental minimalism. In this case, the lyrics are not only an essential ingredient, they're the main draw with the vocalization and instrumentation serving as merely the (still important) frame and setting of the artwork. Final verdict: this is some pretty potent stuff. I'd be afraid to linger too long with it for fear that my empathetic senses would pick up what Drake's putting down. I'm giving this a 4 for its artistic value and for being unlike anything else we've heard thus far (except for maybe "I See a Darkness" by Bonnie "Prince" Billy - but for whatever reason that album came off as more artsy boring than artist authentic).
Just a guy and his acoustic guitar. Sounds like it should be kind of a snoozefest, but it's really interesting and the songs are varied enough to keep you listening. It's a great background album for reading, studying, or just chilling.
Very calming, chill album. Simple and good. I dig it.
Actually liked this quite a bit - had never heard of him before.
Han har nåt speciellt asså
Mysigt!
recently got one of his other albums, five leaves left! i’m a great fan of this guy’s voice. he’s got the melancholy. it’s just an extremely pleasant album. think i’ll keep this one in my library as well.
Calming & intricate - love the acoustic guitar work on this album and can really appreciate it as a lovely folk listen. Vocals are very smooth and mellow too. Pink Moon and Parasite are stand outs.
Great stuff. Low key and understated; wistful and melancholy; bittersweet and introspective. Perfect Sunday morning music.
Perfectly sweet and soothing. By the time I got to the 11th song, the songs did really sound the same. But so what.
Still not my favorite of his. Nick Drake is one of my favorites due to his complex writing and the arrangements he interweaves with a variety of instruments. This album is nearly entirely him and a guitar letting his emotions ride. Its a masterclass in its on right but it just isn't the one for me. Bryter Layter > Five Leaves Left > Pink Moon
nice!
