If the first track were the whole album is give it 5 stars. This is really good listening. I prefer What's Going On, but this was good too.

A very romantic, sexy album. I'm listening to this in the mild heat of May, and it works perfectly on a hot day. Definitely a seasonal album. You sure love to ball is...wow. Very sexy. Might also be my favourite. This is also the track persuading me to give this album 4 stars :) Let's get it on the track is very good. Problem is that it's been used in memes so much I can't enjoy it. I quite liked Please stay and Distant lover (lyrics mostly) as well. This is a great album to put on when you're in the right mood. Blissful soul at it's best. On RYM, one user aptly put it in their list of 'Albums to have sex to'.

Incredible musical talent, but it just doesn't stay with me. Some absolute bangers, but most of the album just fades into the background. Not abrasive or harsh in the slightest, but that also means it goes down without a second thought. Great licks, great tunes, absolutely gorgeous singing, but it ironically lacks some oomph.

Day 1: Classic soul album, not bad.

Best Song: If I Should Die Tonight. I love this style of soul, with multiply-overlapping vocals, wherein each vocal track feels like it's conveying the same lyrics with a starkly different emotion. Worst Song: Just To Keep You Satisfied. It is fitting that the comedown song on this sex album is the least interesting. Overall: This has to be one of the most sexual albums ever recorded. It's impressive what levels of eroticism he was able to cram into 8 tracks, but it also severely limits the companies and contexts in which you can play this album. He might have done too good a job at making a Fuck album.

I’m a new person now. This album changed me. Possibly the most sensual album I’ve ever listened to. There’s a raw sexuality to it but when the strings or the sax comes in it adds some sort of romance to it. Such a simple thing to base an album off of but it does it so completely. The jazzy and funk inspired tracks blend seamlessly with the ballads. Essential listening!!!

Sexy as fuck, but still classy. It's like Marvin Gaye meeting your parents looking all respectable, before tearing your brains out in the bedroom. What else would you expect from a soul god? In terms of tracks, I'm more of a Sexual Healing girl myself but this is solid all around.

It's funny how memed out the title track is, probably to the detriment of this album and the perception the average young person might have about Marvin Gaye. This album was an incredible listen, I almost like it better than What's Going On just based on the strength of the individual songs. Marvin is the GOAT and I'll be coming back to this project a lot.

Damn this album is smooth as hell. Classic, of course. But Marvin was a next level talent. RIP to a legend.

According to the Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums list, this is the no. 1 album of all time, which is a lot to live up to. It’s also pretty short, just over half an hour long. It’s a good album, no doubt. But best of all time is definitely a stretch. Enjoyable but not for me, and I didn’t love the sensual sighs in the background… don’t think it added anything, just made it sound rather trashy. This is kind of the godfather of slow jams, no? I'm a big fan of Marvin and this captures his signature sound end-to-end. Is it a little over-the-top in some places? Maybe, but it was pretty ground-breaking (and controversial) at the time.

Well, what can be said about this album that hasn’t already been said? Certainly nothing from me! Stonewall classic. Should be in every record collection, regardless of your fondness for the genre. 4 stars for me as it ISN’T my favourite genre. An album that I will occasionally seek out to listen to, but not as often as others! Musically and lyrically it’s excellent, there’s just something I can’t quite figure out that holds it back for me!

Poeh, wat zoetsappig. Maar misschien moet ik slaapkamermuziek gewoon niet in de auto luisteren. Aan de andere kant, kan het dan wel lekker hard. En dat heeft Marvin wel nodig om goed tot zijn recht te komen. Opvallend dat ik zijn stem juist wat prettiger vind als hij hoger / minder zwoel zingt.

Botergeile slaapkamermuziek. Het is eigenlijk allemaal veel te overdreven en zoet, maar toch word je er wel blij van. En dat kan ik van veel andere albums niet zeggen.

Pretty good!

Just what I needed. Played through twice straight away and added to my vinyl wish list.

This reminded me of the new project from Silk Sonic (Anderson .Paak & Bruno Mars): it's smooth, it's sensual, it's vibey, the performances are good, the musicians are extremely talented...but it just doesn't interest me. Mr. Gaye recorded a phenomenal sex playlist here but outside of that very specific circumstance, I wouldn't find myself seeking this out ever again.

I have heard this album many times. It is not my go-to album, but it is very mellow.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Smooth vocals.

Album drops off a bit with the final 2 tracks, but it's definitely a great album overall. Such a smooth vibe for a cozy kinda day.

Marvin Gaye has, perhaps, one of the most soulful voices ever put to wax. Most artist wouldn’t be able to make a truly “sexy” album without veering into crassness or cringe, but Gaye manages to craft something that is both tuneful and sensual.

Love this album. The mood is perfect and the singing is too. I don’t have a single problem with the album. I honestly think it’s perfect. 5/5

'Let's Get It On' either (1) disguises the perfunctory nature of the rest of this album or (2) highlights the perfunctory nature of the rest of this album. Depends on how you approach it. I think (2). It isn't a bad album, but the lead song always flags up what Gaye could do and didn't (or wouldn't) with this material. That Let's Get It On is, in effect, reprised half way through adds despair to disappointment. All that said: still stands read beanie , if not head and shoulders, above most of the mainstream soul of the period.

It is beautifully produced, his voice is like velvet and it hangs together well as an album.....BUT...hate to say it but the 35 minutes wash over me and when it ends I feel a bit empty. 83/100: This was a fantastic album. I was just complaining to my friend about how absolutely mediocre all of my albums have been lately, I'm glad I got this album to balance things out. Again, I absolutely love this type of music. It's both mournful and celebratory and sexual all at the same time. It takes a true genius and careful touch to produce the sound and emotions that are present in this album. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this on my drive to the airport.

Lush and lilting. Marv could be both the sexy songbird and the quite naughty grinder. There's a flow and a funk to the falsetto sweetness here – and the difference between moaning lovemaking sound effects on records from this era and today's hip-hop records is notably huge (see "You Sure to Love Ball"); the shame-free, honesty that accompanies even the most direct proclamations of desire, plus the sophisticated and elevating string arrangements give this an authenticity that's borderline pure and innocent.

This album departs from the traditional Motown format and uses sexuality as a form of healing. Marvin Gaye’s own sexuality was stunted by the abuse suffered at the hands of his father and this album represents him working through that and finding salvation in it in a way. The music is a great blend of funk and smooth sensual soul which pioneered the slow jam.

Featuring such songs as "Let's Get it On, "Keep Gettin' It On," and my favorite, "You Sure Love to Ball," this is a steamy album. Its liner notes even refer to "one's genitals." Soulful and sexy, this is fairly perfect.

It did not hurt my feelings at all to listen to these smooth sounds. So sexy!! Honestly, there were a couple of moments in my multiple listens that I had the thought that some of the lyrical content was a little over the top for me, but it didn't stop me from starting the album over again once it finished.

Making us all want to Get It On is what Marvin Gaye does best.

I don’t know man, like when are people gonna put this on? Do people bang to this anymore? Just seems weird, it’s too on the nose. Like if I put this on with my partner, she’s more likely to laugh than anything. I thought it was wild he has released like 15 fucking albums, I laugh thinking he had super-fans buying each record, I’m not gonna listen to another Marvin Gaye album but I really do hope this guy slipped in a metal album in to mix it up a bit. Pretty sure he moaned, “Suck off my soul” at one point during this album, that made me laugh. Overall this sucked, fuck this Scientologist ass. Let’s get it on is fine so 2 stars for this. I’m gonna fuck to something more fun than this shit.! :)

Instead of making a sex joke (which I see we’ve already beaten to death here), I just want to point out how well Marvin can sing, a fact that’s often overlooked with regards to the subject matter he’s singing about. There’s both an ease and power in the vocal delivery, and along with the near-orchestral instrumentation and layered production that means this LP stands out as a fully genuine, well-crafted artistic product. Though things do tend to get homogenous near the back end of the album, it’s still a strong testament to how powerful simple things done well can be.

Smooth, sexy and sweet. The music casts an irresistible spell. There’s also an air of melancholy over a lot of these songs. There are a lot of lyrics about wanting a lover back or yearning for a new love who hasn’t quite agreed to “get it on” just yet. The closing track “Just to Keep You Satisfied” captures this romantic sadness exceptionally well. What a voice. Just impossibly, superhumanly beautiful.

Never understood the appeal of Motown, this was so underwhelming

Wow I had only heard the title track of this album which is obviously everywhere all over popular culture, TV and film. But I had no idea about Gaye's life story, SA at the hands of his fundamentalist preacher father. I find it fascinating and puzzling how he found healing and even drew ties between faith spirituality and sex after all of that traumatic past. But it brings so much context to the title track and now this whole album learning that. With all of that aside, it is just absolute ultimate smooth soul and I freaking love it. It's incredible, the saxophone and the vocals, the jazzy bluesy soulful instrumentation, just wow. Goes without saying it's extremely sexy, what a sexy beautiful man. I personally love that he wrote a song called You Sure Love to Ball... hahaha excellent.

With so many classic artists and releases, I realize that I'm missing the context of the work in terms of its impact and contribution to its moment in time. What sounds cliché now was novel at one point — things I take for granted in songwriting and production were at one point unheard of. I don't know if any of that applies to this album, per se, but I did find the production and ideas on this album a bit clichéd, certainly taken as a whole. Ultimately, while I'll assert (again) how much I admire Marvin Gaye as a vocalist, this album seemed to skid along the same vibe and subject matter — I didn't feel like the album took me anywhere. "Let's Get It On" is not a subtle reference, and it's used three times (including the album title) and then we have "You Sure Love To Ball," and it's pretty clear what Marvin had on his mind. I imagine this must have been pretty racy at the time of its release, for a number of reasons, but strip that away and I found this to be one long sexy track. Nice, but not an album's worth of interest for me.

Yeah, great stuff. The title track is still one of my all-time faves. I simply never get tired of hearing it. The album in general features Marvin at the height of his vocal powers. Dude can do it all. And I love it when he harmonizes with himself. The band is tight as hell, and this time around I was floored by the great drumming. I'd give it five stars but as much as I love that opening track, I feel like the other songs aren't quite as great. Also, I forgot what a downer that last track is. It's a good song, but for an album all about sex and love, to end on a breakup song is interesting.

I enjoyed the smooth calm of Marvin's voice. A short and sweet album that's hits right down the middle for me.

A classic. This album helped to move Marvin away from his Motown roots and develop a more soulful sound. His mix of funky beats and sensual lyricism also helped to influence the new wave of funk and R&B music of the 70s and early 80s.

This album is wild. Such a variation of styles, the sensual overtones, and engagement of Marvin Gaye with his musicians is captivating. His use of his music to cope with his own childhood traumas and spiritual healing comes though lyrically.

Definitely a great listen. I think I could jam to pretty much all of these songs, Marvin’s singing is just enchanting. 7/10

It’s a shame that this album is solely remembered for its title track because the rest of the album is truly “all killer, no filler.” Every single song is a carefully-crafted, passionate masterpiece that showcases all the different flavors of love. Tracks like “I Should Die Tonight” are inescapable representations of passionate and unconditional love, and songs like “Please Stay” are of course musical sex, but it’s songs like “Just To Keep You Satisfied” and “Distant Lover” that really make the album for me. The former is a complex goodbye song, and the latter synthesizes this heartbreak with the rest of the album’s longing: you can hear both the longing and pain in Gaye’s desperate pleas at the end of the song. This album perfectly sets the indescribable intricacies of love to music.

Smooth and laid back classic soul. The title track is a true masterpiece and genre defining, but also filler tracks with overproduced strings, not doing good for the overall impression

6/5/2022 - ALBUM #129 Today's Album: "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye - As I have dived deeper into the culture of R&B and hip hop, I have heard a lot of hype around Marvin Gaye for his sensual style of R&B. Because of that, when I listened to this album I kept waiting for some meaning moment or statement, but by the time I got halfway through the track list, it was evident that this album is appreciated for much more subtle reasons. One of those reasons is the instrumental performances throughout. I think one of my biggest gripes would be the way it's all mixed together, but the smooth string playing reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald mixes really well with the mellow blues aesthetic among the rest of the instruments and Marvin's vocal performance is for the most part, really great. There are a lot of moments where the songs sort of stay in one place for a little while in terms of the groove and vocal delivery, and those are moments that do lose my interest a little bit. The opening track is one of the most well known R&B tracks and the opening alone is enough to conjure up every cheesy sex scene this music has been associated with in your mind, but it's all for good reasons, as this is a standout performance all around from the band. Distant Lover was another highlight here because of just how great of an atmosphere and tone this track builds throughout the track, with lyrics alluding to a long-distance relationship in a really insightful way. Overall, this is a pretty great album throughout, but the sort of hollow feeling production and occasional boring moments make it something that I wouldn't return to super often. Give this one a listen if you like R&B and want a lot of songs that sound like Let's Get It On. Highlights: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Keep Gettin' It On, Distant Lover, Just To Keep You Satisfied. Score: 7/10 Influential and iconic, but somewhat stagnant.

Pretty good, pretty smooth. I don't have much to say about this. Obviously it's good music it all kind of blends together for me at one point.

Look, Mr. Gaye, I understand that “push” rhymes with “bush”, but no matter how iconic and sexy your title track is, it still strikes me as thirsty. When his father shot and killed him before his time, I wonder if Marvin had his “If I Should Die Tonight” running through his mind. And if so, I sure hope the “you” in that song was a real person.

Often imitated but never duplicated, Marvin Gaye is everything that all the modern R&B crooners want to be. And, for what he does, he's the best. The problem is, he only does the one thing. If you've heard "Let's Get It On" (and you have), you've heard everything that Gaye has to offer. That's it. It's everything. The rest of the album is just that on repeat. I'm not sure it belongs on a list of albums we should hear before we die. It's really just the one song. And a ton of saxophone. So. Much. Saxophone.

20th May 2022 dates fucked again Listened in the morning while working from home. Chilled in the evening, finished the book club book and series 2 of stranger things. Smoother than a baby’s cheek.

The title track is such a classic, albeit a slightly overplayed/used song. A legendary singer and voice.

Another Marvin Gaye masterpiece that is a concept album. Personally, I struggle with some 70s Soul and some tracks on this album are good examples. BUT. Marvin wears his soul on his sleeve once again as he addresses his childhood and marital issues with his wife, who is also his boss' sister, so his struggle was real. For as much as this is great Marvin Gaye album, once again, listen to the Funk Brothers in the background. Jamerson's bass and of course the drum work on the title track are masterful. 4/5.

This is from 70s pop soul sounds like if it was not just iconic but could actually put out a good album, something achievable only to the likes of Al Green or Stevie Wonder. It's smooth, funky, but overall sexual in tone and subject matter, reminds me of Barry White. There are horns, strings, and doo-wop back vocals, but all in balance, nothing is ever in excess. Even the solo in "Distant Lover" feels very controlled, contrary to how loud that sax wants to be. The tracks carry a momentum from to the end. Only 8 tracks, good alone but incredible in-line, so the mix of soul and funk never bores you. Each song ends in a quiet prolonged finish, with the next proudly hooking you in. Whoever did the production is astounding, but considering this was a follow up to What's Going On, I can't say I'm too surprised.

Sex - The Album.

Oh a lot of fun, to be sure. But it does get a little tired at points, which drags it down from a sex-God 5 to a sex-demigod 4

2-3 Standout songs go beyond 5 stars and lift the slightly less good (but still groovin) tracks up from a 4. I'd say 4.5 but roundin' up.

Marvin's 13th and most successful album. This is smooth, smooth, smooth. A very easy listen. Some classify as smooth soul or slow jam. Sounds good to me. You definitely hear its influence on future late 70's/early 80's R&B and soul. Apparently, this album was a change in typical Motown recordings in that it was free-flowing album-oriented as opposed to their typical album containing-hit singles-next-to-each-other format. Certain artists have that liberty and I would think Marvin Gaye would be one of them at this point. The themes of these songs are very straight-forward: romance, lust and sex. Marvin's music and voice take it to another level. Some song highlights for me: the title track "Let's Get It On", "Keep Gettin' It On" - similar to the title track with a little more funk, "You Sure Love To Ball" - smooth jazz background music and a great female moan and "Just to Keep You Satisfied" - tremendous vocal performance with sweeping orchestral music. Really not a bad song on the album. I recommend listening to this album as a whole; there is a great flow to the music.

Smooth and sexual

My mum bought me this one year for my birthday, having confused it with the incendiary social commentary of "What's Going On". She was horrified to realise that, in fact, she had given me thirty minutes of "sex music." The joke is all on her: this album is still revealing its secrets to me many years later. The arrangements are so wonderfully sweeping and rich. The strings and brass give a firm bedrock for Gaye's vocals and backing vocals (all done himself). It's doused in a lovely amount of reverb which helps all of it come together in a gorgeous, lush wash of sound... music to bathe in. Listen to that almost imperceptible glockenspiel and flute adding another subtle dimension to "Distant Lover". Perfect. However much it's used as shorthand to a sex scene, a joke or a meme, the song "Let's Get It On" is absolutely timeless, and an incredible performance from Gaye distilling the sex-positive, sensual and celebratory themes of the album into four minutes of triumphant soul. I don't even mind when "Keep Gettin' In On" comes and does basically the same thing a few minutes later. Learning the context of the album- that Gaye was abused by his father as a child and this marked a healing process as he reassessed his views on sex, love and relationships- made it much more poignant. There's a spiritual power in Gaye's vocals which is every bit as pertinent as in "What's Going On": it isn't just an album to bang to. That said, it's definitely an album with a singular "mood"... if you know what I mean. When that mood fits, it's sublime.

Someone should try having sex to this album - it's that good.

Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye (1973) From back in the day when a singer/songwriter could be sensuously erotic without being profane (because he appreciated the art of innuendo), Let’s Get It On pretty much says it all. I was a 17-year-old boy when this came out, and still a virgin. This record prepared (primed) my soul for what I was confident would be mine someday, and the sooner the better as far as I was concerned. My girlfriends were thankfully more circumspect and disciplined. Delayed gratification. But it was great when the title track came on the AM radio at night in my mom’s Dodge Dart with my gf du jour sitting next to me on the front seat (this was before they were all buckets [the seats, that is, not the girlfriends]). From “Just to Keep You Satisfied” to “You Sure Love to Ball”, to the title track “Let’s Get It On”, to its reprise “Keep Gettin’ It On”, it’s obvious that Mr. Gaye had a one-track mind on this eight-track collection of seductive sounds, with lots of strings, lots of bass guitar, and lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ and other airy, nondescript exclamations and exhalations. This is a wistful listen for an old man who can happily resign himself to the fact that few youngsters today will get it, but that’s ok. They’ll have their special memories too. 3/5

The intro to this album is so iconically linked to smut in the media, that it's hard to disassociate that and take it seriously at least to start with. You can see why it was considered that way though, and after that opener, you know what you're getting throughout this. It's a sexy slice of soul, and although I'd listen to it again, I'm not sure I'd want to in the presence of company. This has a short runtime, which amused me more than it should have.

This album is a bit tough for me to judge, and I think I'm going to have to come back to it for future listens to truly give a solid review on it. On this listen, it didn't feel like there was a huge amount going on here. I like each song, but they also kind of flow by without there being much for me to say specifically about them. What's Going On made much more of an impression on me at first listen. I think this might be a case where lots of works that came after Let's Get It On incorporated this sound and approach, and as a consequence it doesn't sound as revolutionary as it is. I certainly can't say that it sounds like works that came before it, and the Wikipedia entry seems to confirm this. I feel like there's a lot here, but it's not something that I'm going to be able to articulate after a single listen 4/5

I would listen to Marvin sing the phone book, in a few times in this it sounded like he was

It must have been hard even for Marvin Gaye to follow up What’s Goin’ On? (if we skip the Trouble Man soundtrack); having dealt with social issues and the environment, Gaye went for something a little more private, a little more sensual on Let’s Get It On. There are terrific tracks here and Gaye’s genius, especially as a vocalist, is apparent throughout. The backing singers are brilliant, I thought - no, wait, that’s all Marvin (except when it’s The Originals on Just to Keep You Satisfied). The jams are glorious and the only criticism is the brevity - a few tracks feel like kernels of ideas not quite fully formed and at half an hour - well, look, I guess that’s long enough for what Marvin had in mind…

Very smooth and sexy, but lacks bite and funk. It’s no What’s Going On. I’m only giving it 2* because Marvin can do way better.

Hi- Let's Get It On, Distant Lover Lo- Keep Gettin' It On, You Sure Love To Ball It's unmistakeable the impact Marvin Gaye had on modern R&B, and this album evokes all the sensual tones it sets out to do just short of turning into overt pornography (You Sure Love To Ball). Even though the album clocks in at just over half an hour, it has a problem with staying power...Do we really need a second round of "Let's Get It On" (Keep Gettin' It On)? Seems like reverting to old tricks just to keep it fresh. The swoopy sax, swanky funk bass, weepy strings, smooth crooning all paints a picture of romance and the correct duration to provide the soundtrack for an anniversary or birthday celebrated by a couple on a work night (whether that couple is two people or one person with a bottle of red wine).

On first listen I found this kind of boring, to be honest. It may benefit from repeat listens, though, like What's Going On did for me.

There is a reason, a very good reason, why most people only know one song on this album.
