Loving this album. Makes me want to dance in the kitchen or lounge on the couch and have an upbeat convo. It also made me want to keep listening to this genre of music for the rest of the day.

It had a vibe through out the whole album. However the only track that grabbed my attention was the first song.

This is a classic for a reason. The vocals are phenomenal, the instrumentation is lush and smooth. The production is still incredible to this day.

As clichéd and overplayed as the title track Let's Get It On has become, it is one hell of an iconic song. It really made it's mark on modern pop culture. The rest of the album is great too, with tight runtime and excellent production, Marvin's vocals really are the star here. It's a great album, from one of the greatest R&B/soul voices of a generation.

Sometimes the stupidity of, and lack of creativity by, the human race really disappoints me. All those endangered species??? Simple to fix! Just put them into a room, dim the lights, and then play this record. Problem solved! There will be baby rhinos, pandas, and things running all over the place in a matter of months. In fact, this record is so potent, that as I played it, I felt my vasectomy reverse itself.

Abrupt start to "If I Should Die Tonight", could queue it lower or work on a smoother transition from "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" Cohesive sound. Beautiful sax and orchestra. High vocals and soft. Smooth Soul and R&B. Pretty sensual for it's time.

Iconic. Instantly recognizable, the title track is an amazing and unforgettable song - silky smooth, sexually charged, and incredibly moving. The latter tracks are slightly less memorable but nonetheless smooth and passionate.

I do think Marvin’s talented, but I just never could get into this or What’s Going On? There’s just something about his sound that doesn’t catch me right. It all sounds the same to me.

I'm not sure if it just is the definition or whether it is so ubiquitous that it feels almost like a trope now, but this album feels like something you want on as a mood setter. It isn't what you actually want to be focusing on. It melts into the background. It's smooth and does a great job at that, but if I'm looking for something to actively listen to, this won't be it.

Let's Get It On has been used in a million different things and I don't think I've ever heard it in its entirety. It's good! A lot of it feels the same, but I see why this is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. It is very sex-heavy, and I like that the album sticks to that theme with every song. I had only heard a couple of songs beforehand, and they weren't even my favorite songs on the album. The smooth backing vocals >>>. It is not the genre of music I would normally listen too though.

Ha! What an album. The drums coming in on Let’s Get It On after those three sexy wahs is so satisfying and perfectly sets the mood for the rest of the album. It’s stunning in its lush arrangements and vocals, creating a dreamy space of all encompassing sensuality and tenderness. Beautiful.

Lighter-hearted jazz. Let’s Get It On is iconic. The rest is more of the same which gets repetitive. There’s a reason only one song has most of the clicks, not that any of it is bad. If I Should Die Tonight is good too.

There’s definitely a comparison here about the strong correlation between this album and actually ’getting it on’. It’s starts very strong. Using its best, time and tested proven moves. That intro that is damn near Pavlovian. It’s just great, gets everything loose, hits the right spots. Then it settles into pure smoothness. Going through the motions a bit, but still nice. Then it almost realises things have … fallen off the boil a little. So it goes back to the same moves of the opener, just a little less effective. Then more, nice, functional, smoothness … and then it just end a little bit too quickly without a satisfying ending. Just me? It’s an album that is our silk, a great background soundtrack. It’s more clearly named than any Ronseal product.

The title track wasnt actually as cheesy and I remember. Definitely a sensual album through and through. Not sure I'd listen again but I think I got it.

So glad we got both of the Marvin Gaye albums, and that they were in the correct timeline order. Both of them are different, yet show the similarity that he knows what he is doing. A brilliant musician, and I can see why these albums stand the test of time and are RIGHTLY included on lists like this.

Holy cow. This is our second from Marvin Gaye (somehow we haven't had What's Going On yet? that doesn't seem right). While Here My Dear was a really excellent surprise, this album tops even that. Yeah, it's very obviously a collection of jams to bone to. But damn man, they are all (in more ways than one) bangers. I genuinely loved all but one track, and that one was still pretty cool. I wasn't expecting depth beyond the title track, as I really don't see people talking about this album, but it goes the distance. I can so strongly hear the influence that he had on guys like Frank Ocean. This is a new favorite R&B/Soul album for me, going into the all time fiver club. Favorite tracks: All but "You Sure Love to Ball," which is still a good song. Album art: Not entirely sure what Marvin is doing in this picture. Is he playing guitar behind his head? Is he holding a pizza box, winding up before he smashes it on the table in front of him? Is he just hitting a "raise the roof" emote style? No idea. But it's blurry, the font is pretty shitty, and it doesn't even matter because the music is that good. 5/5

There are probably millions of Gen X'ers that were conceived to the music on this album. I rank albums by how much I enjoyed it during the moments in which I listened to it, and it should be known that no rating I give any project is static and would be subject to change depending on how I'm feeling in the moment. Favorite tracks: "Come Get To This", "You Sure Love To Ball", and "If I Should Die Tonight".

Very good production it’s a freaky album. Saxophone melody in you sure love to ball is angelic. I like the diversity in different songs. In “come get to this” the drum pattern is crazy but other songs like “distant lover” it’s very slow and dance vibe with jazz in background. 3/5

What's getting on, S? The spree of MG's What's Going On, Here My Dear, and Let's Get It On has convinced me he was the master of the concept album, a mode I'd thought cursed. He matches form with function perfectly, and it all starts with how he uses his voice. Sonically, this is consistent to the point of repetition, but as the record is only 35 minutes long it becomes this perfect expression of his sentiment.

Context: I had only ever heard Marvin Gaye in TV show's so this was a completely new experience. Listens: 1 This is a very good album, Marvin Gaye has an amazing voice. Enjoyed this through pretty much. However with an opener that strong, everything else almost feels less impressive.

This album felt slightly above average to me. Each track on the project does just enough for me to add them to my playlist for future listening. However, only a select few felt like truly great tracks, as most of these songs just play it very safe IMO. Marvin Gaye’s phenomenal voice also makes this project more enjoyable. 7/10

Ah, the controversial Let's Get It On / Thinking out loud 😆

Only knew Gaye's 'What's Going On' album, so this was a new one for me. The first listen I didn't have it on loud enough and felt a bit underwhelmed. Evidently my ears just needed to adjust... when it finished I put it straight back on and, wow, his voice just hit me. And 'If I Should Die Tonight'... poor Marvin.

Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On is an absolute CLASSIC. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the rest of the record lives up to the expectations set by this song. It's terrific music (and there's a clear time and place for this album), but I was looking to more captured by the album in a way I wasn't. Still, the title track is in and of itself worthy of inclusion on this list.

This moves. A change of pace alright. SO DIFFERENT to the turgid stuff in this part of the 1001 list.So slick and lush and almost painfully sensual (this makes the mainstream stuff others were playing feel cold and remote...an aside on album art - fonts aside - the cover photo is modern, still). This album moves... what a voice, and style. tight band. If this is his first attempt at funk, he nails it. ... and he isnt even at "sexual healing" (that was 10 years later!) , but he is on the topic already, as captured on the wikipedia page for this album. ...this deserves to be on the list. and I like it. An easy, so easy, 5 and I am just 3 tracks in.

Look, I love the title song, but I don’t think anything else here is nearly as good. It’s fine, but it’s not riveting. I enjoyed listening to it. But I’d much rather listen to the album that preceded it - What’s Going On.

It's easy to think of the title track as almost a cliché of 70s smooth soul, but listening to it fresh and in context, it's hard to deny how compelling it is. It is the jewel in the crown of this album, which is a sensuous and rapturous template for so much slow jam, lover man soul to come. While the remaining tracks might not rise to the level of the title track, I find is a consistently great album to listen to all the way through. I would listen to Marvin Gaye, here at the height of his powers, sing the telephone book. This album is not quite as great as What's Going On, but this would be a career pinnacle for almost any other artist. 4.5 stars, rounding up.

Gaye has an amazing voice and I always like hearing James Jameson on bass. A personal pet peeve with albums is when songs come back as a reprise, no idea why, it just bothers me. Also the orgasmic noises on you sure love to ball were awkward.

Hadn't listened to much from Marvin Gaye, but recognized several songs on, Let's Get It On. The title track is the "go-to" song for TV and movies whenever love & romance is in the air and the rest of the album follows this theme. A solid album with Gaye's smooth sexy voice creates an the amazing atmosphere of smooth soul and funky funk. It's the perfect mood maker and THE album to put on your turntable before saying, "let's get it on!"

Today's album is the third Marvin Gaye album that I've reviewed (previously reviewed What's Going On and Here, My Dear), and his thirteenth studio album. This album is very erotic and sexual. I kind of feel like I got ear fucked by Marvin by listening to this album. It is like Let's Get It On is the first round of sex, then the "cigarette and a drink" break during the next 2 songs, followed by a second round of banging when Keep Gettin' It On starts. Marvin is a master of his craft, creating a fantastic record of soul/funk. Let's Get It On is a classic that literally everyone knows. Overall, an excellent album today! I'll absolutely listen again! Of the three records I've reviewed of his, this is my favorite. It feels like the most consistent throughout. Favourite songs: Let's Get It On, Keep Gettin' It On, Please Stay (Once You Go Away) Least favourite song: If I Should Die Tonight, Just To Keep You Satisfied 4/5

Love the funky guitars and string instrumentation, incredible side 2 on this one

Just a classic soul record with some great romantic and sexy numbers on it, all centered around tasteful production and Marvin's great voice. For not being my cup of tea I enjoyed it a lot.

Smooth, silky, sexy - many a baby has been made to this album, especially Side A. When Marvin gets it on, he gets it on. A true soul classic.

Pretty ok soul album. It never wanders far from Let's Get it On, and so it feels kind of samey throughout because of that. But there's some decent arrangements on some of the tunes and I wouldn't complain at listening again.

The sexier, but slightly less impactful and considerably less political What’s Going On, this is undeniably a classic and it goes down smooth. You really don’t need a longer experience here. A-

In a continuing theme of my reviews, I'd be perfectly happy for this to be on but I just wouldn't bother to put it on myself. Also, the constant sex theme of the album gets a bit wearing too, if I'm honest. I was going to write that it just turned into a bunch of instrumentals by the end but it turned out that's 'cos Spotify was playing a load of extras from the Deluxe version!

It really felt like Marvin just phoned this one in. From the bedroom.

1 or 2 tracks about boning are fine. But every single track gets old

I’ve never really dabbled in soul but this was a really pleasant album to listen to. If I Should Die Tonight has to be one of the best soul songs I have ever heard.

Let's Get It On is one of the greatest and most iconic love songs of all time -- that much is indisputable. I just wasn't in the mood for an album full of that.

I comment on vocalists a lot, but this has to be close to the top of the pile. So good he got Berry Gordy to change his formula at Motown. Reading the background of the album makes it seem like this is yet another album as therapy for a complicated sexual history - funny how sincerity and introspection can make something great.

It was ok. A little samey, a little dull in parts.

I’ve probably heard this more than any other album ever. This time through I tried an experiment and listened to it more as a metaphor about bringing more love into our lives in every way. Of course it’s an album about sex and romantic love. But I think Marvin had a much broader version of love in mind too. He’s pretty straightforward about it at times but also I think he just had his love dial turned up. Try walking around with the security of If I Should Die Tonight (if you can manage it), the openness of Let’s Get it On, and the joy of Keep Getting It On, and the world is a beautiful place.

Marvin Gaye died years before I was born, but goddamn if he didn't just make sweet sonic love to my ears.

I've heard many Marvin Gaye songs but have never delved into his albums and I regret it. Only 8 songs long and not a single one of them is a dud. As much as Gaye dove into social and political themes on his "What's Going on?" album, he made this a romantic, sexy-time album. It's amazing how he can transition so quickly between what each albums was focused on. This is a must-listen.

I once heard Marvin Gaye’s voice described as “silk rubbing on satin”, & I don’t think I can top that.

Let's get it on... and on and on. What I find very weird about this classic Marvin Gaye LP is that it can either be played as background music where each track sounds basically the same, OR be played as an album you really need to pay attention to--which means that it's sort of an intellectual exercise, far from its avowed goal to be music "to make love to your old lady by". As other folks pointed out here, the sensuality displayed in those very similar tunes is a little too on-the-nose for today's standards anyway. What's left is the spotless execution, production and performance. 4/4, if only for this. Kinda mediocre outside of one or two songs

Must be the pinnacle of this sub-genre of seduction soul. Perfect craft.

I recently quipped that Dua Lipa was the Marvin Gaye of our times. So much in each track is devoted to getting in on in one way or another. This itty bitty album oozes and drips, yearns and burns, and has me closing my eyes and leaning in to it the whole way.

Two years after the politically-conscious What's Going On, Marvin Gaye strikes back with the sexually-charged Let's Get It On. While the former album is incredibly important, Let's Get It On is the smoothest of the smooth, the sexiest of the sexy. A passion-fueled record that takes no breaks. The music sits comfortably in the pocket while Gaye puts the magic on. It's incredible how much of a natural this guy is. There is a fine line to straddle between being charming and creepy and there is no creep to be found here.

This album made me want to dress like Hugh Hefner and sit on a bear rug, feeding chocolates to my lover in front of a big fireplace in a dimly lit room. Just a nice half hour of good soulful music. Incredibly enjoyable. Love this album. Great instrumentation and singing. Chords and song structures were great. When I got to “Keep Gettin’ It On” I was a little worried about there being a lack of range and by the album’s end, still wasn’t quite satisfied. However, I don’t think this album necessarily needs a ton of range to work. It’s more a vibe-album and has enough lyrical range to carry it. I certainly didn’t care at all for the moaning in the beginning of “You Sure Love To Ball”. 4/5

Best easy listen music, super smooth. Super sexy

That's baby making music right there! A smooth soul experience bound to make you super uncomfortable in front of your parents or maybe not, I don't know your life. A nice listen but no bangers outside "Lets get it on" which is worth the price of admission either way.

Sexy What's Going On, what's not to love?

Overall a very strong album. The only problem is that I'm constantly comparing it to "What's Going On" which I feel is the superior album. That being said, this album is PURE sex. I finished it and found myself smoking a cigarette and I don't even own a pack. It's THAT good.

While the title track of this album is, in my opinion, one of the sexiest songs of all time, the rest of the album didn't leave much of a strong impression on me. It was a good listen, relaxing and very chill, and Marvin Gaye has a great voice. I just don't know if I could see myself going back to listen to the entire thing. Standout tracks: "Let's Get It On," "Please Stay (Once You Go Away)," and "Distant Lover."

Great album. Very sexy, great guitar trills in the beginning. The strings are excellent, everything's mixed so nicely, love the subtle harp in the background. The sax sounds fantastic and Marvins smooth vocal delivery is the cherry on top. favorite track: you sure love to ball.
