Didn’t love this as much as I thought I would.

This was good. But not really the type of music I’m into. His vocals are incredible. His story is so tragic.

This album doesn't hold a candle to what's going on but what does?

I never really thought about it but the opening guitar lick on this album is one of the most iconic guitar lines of all time. And it’s only played that one time, it never repeats. But if you play that one line most anybody will know what it is. Aside from that, I wasn’t huge on this album. Marvin Gaye has an incredible voice, but he be never clicked with his music. I can appreciate it, he’s a talented songwriter, I just don’t like the songs. Nothing wrong with them, just not my taste.

Sexy

I liked let’s get it on which was on the radio all the time when I was growing up. The rest of the album was ok, but all sounded very similar. His later songs w Tammy Terrell were much more enjoyable.

It was a little weird listening to the title track to this album while walking through Aunt Mary’s neighborhood. Didn’t know any other songs; album was fine.

This was better than I expected. Liked “side 2” better than “side 1”, although the title track that leads it all off is a classic. Too bad he was taken from us so soon. Fine looking gentleman as well.

I dread to think how many people were conceived to this album haha. It’s fine, a classic, but not one I would really come back to.

Thoughts before listening: This is certainly a classic album, but also one I don't believe I've heard. I mean I know the title track which is one of the sexiest songs of all time, but I don't believe I've heard the rest. Interested to see why it gets so much praise. Review: Man, Marvis was feeling randy on this album huh? "Lets Get It On", "Keep Gettin' It On", "You Sure Love to Ball", "Just to Keep You Satisfied", etc...just the names of these songs let you know what this album is about. The title track is a stone cold classic that is always nice to hear. The rest feels like retreads of that song despite Marvin's lovely voice. This is nice pleasant background music, but its not something that I feel I would listen to very often. 3-stars

I like it less than what's going on

If this had been any longer, it would have received less than 3 stars. As it is, I didn't hate it enough to give it lower than 3 stars, but it was purely background music while it was playing.

I think anyone needing to do a lie detector test should listen to a Marvin Gaye album before they take it because is voice can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, and relieve stress while you listen. For me though, it is not a favoured style of music but still a good 3 star album or solid C+.

Soulful, funky, masterfully played. Wonderful basslines and string parts, and great vocal arrangements and performances. That said, the album was a little one-note, and it wasn't very long, but I still was kind of relieved when it was over and I could get some more variety. Three stars.

Marvin really does love getting’ it on

It's not my favorite Marvin Gaye album.

Marvin Gaye has a remarkable singing voice. Let’s Get It On is pretty catchy and everything on the album is well executed. But! This music exists for one reason and one reason only, and I think we all know what that reason is. Outside of a very specific context- or possibly a slow dance - it doesn’t appeal to my taste. Great work though just not my bag. A little too slow and romantic.

Enjoyable as a background noise album outside of title track.

Perhaps in the 70s before netflix and air conditioned bedroom, something like this might have been necessary for getting your wife in the mood. Perhaps in the 70s the musical landscape was so much less dramatic that the soft crunes of Marvin Gaye were enough to satisfy your mind. Beyond the first two tracks which I think are excellent, the songs are a bit too sparse for me. There isn't much to chew on in the latter half of the album and I found myself waiting for the some of those iconic melodies that Motown is known for. That relief never came and I found myself bored, and wanting more. This style of slow-burning musical foreplay doesn't really suit me.

A little cheesy, but basically perfectly nice.

I suppose I prefer it to him singing about his ex for a whole album, but this still ain’t it. Don’t get the hype.

Pleasant. Not as good as What's going on which came a couple days ago funnily enough. Less social issues and entirely love related, which gets a bit boring after a while. Appreciate the short run time though. Combining the best from the two albums and you've potentially got something pushing 5* on your hands.

One great song. . . He has a great voice and magnetic presence. But his sensibilities and taste in songs. . . is of a different time and place. It feels 50 years old.

Not the genre I usually listen to, but it was definitely interesting to hear some soulful music from half a century ago. I also recognized a Kanye sample from his debut album on the track 'Spaceship', which was a cool find. All in all I enjoyed it but it didn't leave a big impression on me unfortunately.

If only I had a 3.5. Well, I don't, but it is right in the middle. I liked the songs on it, but not peak soul. I usually love soul, and this was good, but yeah, as I said. In the middle of 3 and 4. I'll give it a 3.

Another catchup album for me, and I echo the impressions and comments of the group. Landmark album for sure, albeit somewhat compartmentalized and situational (THE situation). Well above average for the genre, I’ll give it a 3.5/5 rounding down.

Gaye really leans into the sexually suggestive theme he's going for, and the songs are good in isolation, but it's a lot to hear a full album of this. Perhaps the genre is just not for me, or perhaps I wasn't listening to the music in its intended setting... Anyway, surprisingly I don't think I've ever heard the title song all the way through until now. As a final note, I could do without the moaning sounds at the start of "We sure love to ball."

I’ve listened to a Marvin Gaye album before, but it sadly didn’t have that one baby-making song on it. Fortunately, today’s album opens with that beloved track, and I’m excited to hear how it follows on from that. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Let’s Get It On Favourites: Let’s Get It On This was a bit of an odd one. Firstly, the whole album is super sexy and makes any listeners gyrate. If you’re into gyrating, you’ll probably like this. If not, you’ll get bored after a few minutes. The strangest thing for me was that track 4 is called Keep Gettin’ It On and is practically the same song as the opener. It has the same chords, same vibe and everything. If it was a 30 second interlude callback I could get it, but it’s a full blown song which makes gives the biggest feeling of deja vu. Overall, I can see the appeal with this, but it’s not really my kind of vibe.

So groovy. The non-super famous songs didn’t really strike me as that good, so I wouldn’t really seek it out to listen, but it’s solid. 6.5/10

Had no idea the same album had a sequel track to Let's get it on...my man Marvin really likes to sing about doing it. His voice is amazing, the title track is obviously an all time great song...the rest I was whelmed by. Love me some Motown, but this was pretty average.

How many babies is this album responsible for? Perhaps Japan can solve its birth rate problem by blasting this in the streets of Tokyo.

These are my confessions: 1) I didn’t know this album existed. I prob would have said Let’s Get it On was on his What’s Going On album. 2) I thought for sure this would be no less than a 4 star album. Short and sweet with one of the most well-known intros in the world. There's some good vocals and all going on in this album which leads me to a 3.5, but I personally didn't hear much to ever really hook me in, despite being such a short album.

From Let’s Get Killed to Let’s Get It On… two kinds of people, I guess. Anyway, while I don’t claim to know a ton of Marvin Gaye’s music, I do know the title track, but mostly because it’s pretty much become a meme at this point. For that reason, it’s honestly a little hard for me to take the track seriously, but I will say, it slowly grows more enjoyable once you get further into it and past the initial signature guitar wah-wahs. Aside from that, this album is nothing but an absolutely enjoyable blast of sexy soul music, something probably few do better than Marvin Gaye. Admittedly, it mostly runs together and is a bit one-note, but when you have said note down to a tee, why would you change it up? The album does an amazing job of setting and maintaining a vibe without ever growing tiring, and as a result, I found myself grooving in my chair to a good chunk of this and thinking about my Sauga gal. Definitely not the most distinct thing I’ve heard nor is it the type of thing I see myself putting on often in my free time, but I enjoyed it quite a bit here. You really can’t go wrong with a lot of Motown, and this album is no exception.

Really enjoyed this listen. Obviously familiar with the title track, which is just an absolute banger to start the album with. As it continued, the songs started to blend together and I kept finding myself looking for that next “Let’s Get It On” moment from the title track. Never really found it, but it still surprised me how much I enjoyed this. This is an album that is a perfect pairing with a winters night dinner at home that I cooked with my wife.

#108. This album is pretty good. Great even. Probably even one of the best when it comes to soul music. But soul music in general is just kinda middle of the pack music, and my score for this album reflects that. Good as it may be, this kind of album is not the kind of thing you'd just pop on on a regular raggedy ass Tuesday when if you wanted to listen to something. 3/5: it has its place, but that place is not at the top of the list.

Notable track: Let’s Get it On

With zero context about the man’s life, this album is a great display of deconstructed masculinity. It reads as a man who is not insecure in himself or his relationships, which allows him to be vulnerable and ask what he wants of the women he’s speaking to. Let’s Get It On feels more like an invitation than a one sided pining. UNTIL you hit the final song, which documents the end of his first marriage, and shows incredible strength of seeing where their relationship isn’t working and finally letting it go. Now, I looked up Marvin Gaye’s bio because I didn’t want egg on my face, and he had some ISSUES. Take my assessment with a cowlick of salt. He also wrote most of the album in the middle of his first marriage, so maybe he was manifesting what he wanted for himself. Who knows?

Makes me think of good 70’s Blacksploitation movies. Cool jams but every song is very repetitive. Keep Gettin’ It On was good but just kept going with no variation. I could see putting this on behind a romantic dinner. Tracks added to Spotify: 0

So this a pretty fun album, smooth, sexy and soulful to be sure with some really rich arrangements. Marvin Gaye is in his prime, and in amazing voice. The title track is an all time classic. But after a few songs it just gets thematically tired. You really have to be in the right mood for it. The final track also seems completely out of place. I see what Marvin was doing with it, but it would have worked better had he transitioned more subtly to it, or just saved it for another album. It was an impressive feat to follow up the message of “What’s Going On” with the sultry passion of “Let’s Get it On.” Unfortunately, beyond the opening title track, there’s not much to dig into here. “Please Don’t Stay,” “If I Should Die Tonight,” and “Keep Getting it On” try to keep the momentum going, but none are as catchy as what precedes them. At least they were better than side two, which was pretty forgettable.

Marvin Gaye was a sexy sounding man. The start of this album is perfectly smooth. I would like Mr. Gaye to sing me almost anything. My only issue is that the slow parts of the album lose my interest even though they are still quite beautiful.

This album is a great affirmative argument in favor of editing and being concise. At 30 minutes, it's good. At 35 or 40 it would drag *a lot*. I do wish it had a second big single to buoy the back end though. I'd give this 3.5 if fractional stars were allowed.

Try as I might, I just can't quite seem to discern what the overarching theme of this album is. Does anyone else find it as hilarious as I do that the first 7 tracks are a passionate full court press advocating for getting it on, and then the last track is like, "Well, it's too late..."? It's like the campaign from the first 7 songs was successful, things wrapped up, and reality set in.

I'm not sure if it just is the definition or whether it is so ubiquitous that it feels almost like a trope now, but this album feels like something you want on as a mood setter. It isn't what you actually want to be focusing on. It melts into the background. It's smooth and does a great job at that, but if I'm looking for something to actively listen to, this won't be it.

Very beautiful and lush, feels like it deserves a dedicated listening session - not so great for grabbing attention while working. The instrumentals and melodies also begin to blend together a bit.

There are probably millions of Gen X'ers that were conceived to the music on this album. I rank albums by how much I enjoyed it during the moments in which I listened to it, and it should be known that no rating I give any project is static and would be subject to change depending on how I'm feeling in the moment. Favorite tracks: "Come Get To This", "You Sure Love To Ball", and "If I Should Die Tonight".

Very good production it’s a freaky album. Saxophone melody in you sure love to ball is angelic. I like the diversity in different songs. In “come get to this” the drum pattern is crazy but other songs like “distant lover” it’s very slow and dance vibe with jazz in background. 3/5

Context: I had only ever heard Marvin Gaye in TV show's so this was a completely new experience. Listens: 1 This is a very good album, Marvin Gaye has an amazing voice. Enjoyed this through pretty much. However with an opener that strong, everything else almost feels less impressive.

This album felt slightly above average to me. Each track on the project does just enough for me to add them to my playlist for future listening. However, only a select few felt like truly great tracks, as most of these songs just play it very safe IMO. Marvin Gaye’s phenomenal voice also makes this project more enjoyable. 7/10

Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On is an absolute CLASSIC. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the rest of the record lives up to the expectations set by this song. It's terrific music (and there's a clear time and place for this album), but I was looking to more captured by the album in a way I wasn't. Still, the title track is in and of itself worthy of inclusion on this list.

Just a classic soul record with some great romantic and sexy numbers on it, all centered around tasteful production and Marvin's great voice. For not being my cup of tea I enjoyed it a lot.

Pretty ok soul album. It never wanders far from Let's Get it On, and so it feels kind of samey throughout because of that. But there's some decent arrangements on some of the tunes and I wouldn't complain at listening again.

In a continuing theme of my reviews, I'd be perfectly happy for this to be on but I just wouldn't bother to put it on myself. Also, the constant sex theme of the album gets a bit wearing too, if I'm honest. I was going to write that it just turned into a bunch of instrumentals by the end but it turned out that's 'cos Spotify was playing a load of extras from the Deluxe version!

I’ve never really dabbled in soul but this was a really pleasant album to listen to. If I Should Die Tonight has to be one of the best soul songs I have ever heard.

That's baby making music right there! A smooth soul experience bound to make you super uncomfortable in front of your parents or maybe not, I don't know your life. A nice listen but no bangers outside "Lets get it on" which is worth the price of admission either way.

While the title track of this album is, in my opinion, one of the sexiest songs of all time, the rest of the album didn't leave much of a strong impression on me. It was a good listen, relaxing and very chill, and Marvin Gaye has a great voice. I just don't know if I could see myself going back to listen to the entire thing. Standout tracks: "Let's Get It On," "Please Stay (Once You Go Away)," and "Distant Lover."

It’s good music, though not really my style. Great vocal performances and didn’t get bored at all throughout.

Incredible musical talent, but it just doesn't stay with me. Some absolute bangers, but most of the album just fades into the background. Not abrasive or harsh in the slightest, but that also means it goes down without a second thought. Great licks, great tunes, absolutely gorgeous singing, but it ironically lacks some oomph.

According to the Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums list, this is the no. 1 album of all time, which is a lot to live up to. It’s also pretty short, just over half an hour long. It’s a good album, no doubt. But best of all time is definitely a stretch. Enjoyable but not for me, and I didn’t love the sensual sighs in the background… don’t think it added anything, just made it sound rather trashy. Favs: If I Should Die Tonight, Let’s Get It On, Come Get To This

Sexy

It’s good fuckin’ music. It’s good fucking music. Gaye is iconic, but it’s not an album I’d return to.

Sexy sweet yummy

Let's Get it On is an undeniably great song. The rest of the album is not really in my stylistic wheel house...a little too love songy (if that's a thing). The singing is incredibly good but the arrangements are too syrupy and lacking in agressiveness. 3.5 stars

Poeh, wat zoetsappig. Maar misschien moet ik slaapkamermuziek gewoon niet in de auto luisteren. Aan de andere kant, kan het dan wel lekker hard. En dat heeft Marvin wel nodig om goed tot zijn recht te komen. Opvallend dat ik zijn stem juist wat prettiger vind als hij hoger / minder zwoel zingt.

This some romantic pre-or-during-foreplay shit. I fuck with it. Literally. Bit weird to listen to it when I'm not though - very niche.

I think if this was anyone else I would give it a much lower rating but Marvin elevates it to another level. I can't imagine anyone else could get away with basically having the same song ("Let's Get It On" and "Keep Gettin' It On") twice on the same album. 3.5 stars

'Let's Get It On' either (1) disguises the perfunctory nature of the rest of this album or (2) highlights the perfunctory nature of the rest of this album. Depends on how you approach it. I think (2). It isn't a bad album, but the lead song always flags up what Gaye could do and didn't (or wouldn't) with this material. That Let's Get It On is, in effect, reprised half way through adds despair to disappointment. All that said: still stands read beanie , if not head and shoulders, above most of the mainstream soul of the period.

Soulful and seductive. Always cool to go back to these classic albums and heat snippets used in samples (just to keep you satisfied in leaving you by fabolous, as I am sure in many others too).

First song is a blinder! Rest don’t quite live up to that. But he’s a consummate vocalist and these are great songs. I still think I’d rather listen to a Best of album.

Not my thing

The hit is timeless but the rest of the album is good but not amazing.

Instead of making a sex joke (which I see we’ve already beaten to death here), I just want to point out how well Marvin can sing, a fact that’s often overlooked with regards to the subject matter he’s singing about. There’s both an ease and power in the vocal delivery, and along with the near-orchestral instrumentation and layered production that means this LP stands out as a fully genuine, well-crafted artistic product. Though things do tend to get homogenous near the back end of the album, it’s still a strong testament to how powerful simple things done well can be.

Everyone knows Let's Get It On. The rest of the album could be more aptly be named "Marvin Gaye is Horny" as the topic matter is pretty single focussed. Nothing wrong in that, mind, just a bit boring over and over.

p295. 1973. 3 stars, just. The soundtrack to a million 70s seductions. Has not aged well - production sounds dated, and a lot of the tracks are filler. Set against that, you have one of THE great soul voices on absolutely top form.

Mostly great tracks, but I bet it would hit different on a get-away with my wife, rather than on my commute to the office. Sensual, soulful, passionate.

Openingstrack is geweldig. De rest is ook mooi maar ook wel op het randje van te gelikt en zoet.

Jammer dat de vader van Marvin zijn mooie stem om zeep heeft geholpen. Let’s get it on is een fantastisch nummer.

With so many classic artists and releases, I realize that I'm missing the context of the work in terms of its impact and contribution to its moment in time. What sounds cliché now was novel at one point — things I take for granted in songwriting and production were at one point unheard of. I don't know if any of that applies to this album, per se, but I did find the production and ideas on this album a bit clichéd, certainly taken as a whole. Ultimately, while I'll assert (again) how much I admire Marvin Gaye as a vocalist, this album seemed to skid along the same vibe and subject matter — I didn't feel like the album took me anywhere. "Let's Get It On" is not a subtle reference, and it's used three times (including the album title) and then we have "You Sure Love To Ball," and it's pretty clear what Marvin had on his mind. I imagine this must have been pretty racy at the time of its release, for a number of reasons, but strip that away and I found this to be one long sexy track. Nice, but not an album's worth of interest for me.

I enjoyed the smooth calm of Marvin's voice. A short and sweet album that's hits right down the middle for me.

Solid, but super repetitive, felt like listening to an hour long version of let's get it on (theres even a reprise in the middle -_-) 3/5

6/5/2022 - ALBUM #129 Today's Album: "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye - As I have dived deeper into the culture of R&B and hip hop, I have heard a lot of hype around Marvin Gaye for his sensual style of R&B. Because of that, when I listened to this album I kept waiting for some meaning moment or statement, but by the time I got halfway through the track list, it was evident that this album is appreciated for much more subtle reasons. One of those reasons is the instrumental performances throughout. I think one of my biggest gripes would be the way it's all mixed together, but the smooth string playing reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald mixes really well with the mellow blues aesthetic among the rest of the instruments and Marvin's vocal performance is for the most part, really great. There are a lot of moments where the songs sort of stay in one place for a little while in terms of the groove and vocal delivery, and those are moments that do lose my interest a little bit. The opening track is one of the most well known R&B tracks and the opening alone is enough to conjure up every cheesy sex scene this music has been associated with in your mind, but it's all for good reasons, as this is a standout performance all around from the band. Distant Lover was another highlight here because of just how great of an atmosphere and tone this track builds throughout the track, with lyrics alluding to a long-distance relationship in a really insightful way. Overall, this is a pretty great album throughout, but the sort of hollow feeling production and occasional boring moments make it something that I wouldn't return to super often. Give this one a listen if you like R&B and want a lot of songs that sound like Let's Get It On. Highlights: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Keep Gettin' It On, Distant Lover, Just To Keep You Satisfied. Score: 7/10 Influential and iconic, but somewhat stagnant.

Pretty good, pretty smooth. I don't have much to say about this. Obviously it's good music it all kind of blends together for me at one point.
