It's hard to not think of what this group eventually went on to do, but if you put all that aside and just focus on this record alone, it's just simply a masterclass of a debut. Solid 5 Stars.

It’s a 10. I knew it was great going in. I was hoping it would be fantastic, and I would say it’s exactly that. I’m a total sucker for Chris Martin’s brand of regret-tinged optimism & his vivacious attitude towards love & hope. Yes, it might feel corny to some people, and I won’t dispute that Coldplay, in recent years, has gotten a bit hokier as a band, especially with that regret-tinged optimism being replaced by a sort of bubbly adventurous spirit that feels like a false mask that doesn’t confront the pain that Chris is able to so beautifully croon about on this album. I will not, however, let the perception of Coldplay in 2026 shape my opinion of this album from 2000, as this feels like one of the best debut albums ever put to tape. I already gave a lot of praise to “A Rush of Blood to the Head”, and that did feel like an instant classic when I heard it in full for the first time 901 albums ago. I can’t tell you which one is better, at least not without hearing that one again, but on a first pass here… hoo. The showmanship of that album with its more vivid & layered storytelling, along with its more consistent theming may make for a more potent album experience, but as far as “Parachutes” goes, I find myself impressed by the humanity of it all. There’s a rawness to this album that feels more innately relatable to my ears. Yes, a track like “The Scientist” is beautiful, but it’s designed to be anthemic in nature. These tracks feel like they were born out of lived experience. “We Never Change”, in particular, really struck me as the best track here from the ones I wasn’t already familiar with. At its core, it’s just a man plainly expressing his desires for life & the rules he wants to live by, with a despondence behind it that underlines the track in a defeated, yet hopeful way. I think at the end of the day, we all want what that track asks for. That same ethos applies to something as monstrously huge as “Yellow” – look at the lyrics and how they shine in their own way, but everything they do is done with purpose. It’s just plainly stating his devotion. The difference between both tracks is in the instrumentation – “Yellow” is constantly pushing & driving & bringing the force of his love out, yet “We Never Change” is sort of static by comparison with its acoustic approach. This album is made off of the back of its instrumentals pairing to the energy of each track, and while that should be the ethos for every band to follow, Coldplay just manages to do it in a way that elevates things for me. At the end of the day, you either feel these tracks or you don’t. If you don’t, then you just don’t, and that’s totally fine. Believe me, I get it. I’m just an optimistic fool who can’t help but buy into this stuff. I think Chris Martin's vocals are great, I think the instrumentation is fantastic, and there's not a single skip here. It’s an easy 10 for me, and I'm very glad to have finally heard it in full.

This is a sensitive emotional boy album but I am just sensitive and emotional in a different way. Highlights: "Shiver", "Sparks", "Yellow"

Coldplay's early run is legendary. What a fall off man.

at first the first few songs I thought that I would like this more than I thought and maybe it’s just the front man that I don’t like because he is a weenie. this would be better as an instrumental album because I do like the band part a little. by the time spark came on I realize the lyrics are pretty bad and by the time yellow came next, which is the song that I did recognize, I realized that they’re just really boring in the lyrics are bad indeed. one word basic song titles. by the time travel came on I realized I just don't like them. then what was up with the song parachutes? That's what the album was named after but it was like 40 seconds of blah. by the end of the album It was pretty hard to get through it. I could see maybe listening to this not voluntarily but if it came on during a snowy day while I was doing some crafting or baking shit I might not turn it when I wasn't paying attention, but it's really music for people who don't like music and people who are not deep so they can feel deep. I could see how this would be influential for those people. it's just very white. in the beginning I was hopeful when it was around four stars maybe even and then I went down to three stars by the end of the two star the last song kind of brought it up a little bit I do like the band sometimes almost I almost like the band music just definitely not the front man and most of the time I actually don't like the band either. I hope this doesn't mess up my algorithm and there's a bonus track how lovely great

A bit too slow for me personally

Where it all started. This was one of the last CD’s I bought and based on just one song and it turned out the whole thing was terrific and would see Coldplay just barely getting started as well as still around in 2026. Definitely belongs on this list.

This is a significant debut album from the start of the new century. It is the sound of a band each with a contribution and the bridge between Radiohead, U2 and the post britpop indie rock boom. Yellow, Trouble and Don't Panic were good enough to get them an early Glastonbury headline before they went stratospheric with the sophomore effort. The 'album' tracks show an approach to writing that would develop into a more melodic approach that would centre less around Johnny Buckland's Edge-influenced chiming guitar and more around Chris Martin's piano led songs. Nevertheless this album was an auspicious start that managed to improve remarkably in the coming decade.

Why do all these Coldplay songs sound like Coldplay? Yawn. I was singing Yellow before I listened to the album. So, a slightly catchy song. Still boring. These guys were in Shaun of the Dead, probably boring the zombies to death with their music. Yawn. The album cover confuses me, here on this page, it looks like a spinning lit globe of the Western Hemisphere. Yet on Spotify, it looks like the moon. Odd. 2

It's pretty but a bit of a snooze. 3.5 for nostalgia.

I quite enjoyed this one. The atmosphere is incredible and is very well done. Most of the songs give me vibes reminiscent of the softer songs on Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer. Just so peaceful, soothing and angelic. I thought because 'Coldplay' is the artist, I thought it was - just like A Rush of Blood to the Head - going to be just pop slop, but both albums are pretty meticulous. Out of the two Coldplay albums I've heard now, I overwhelming prefer and see myself returning to this one. Highlight Song/s: "Spies"

However it's just been relegated as "the one with Yellow" as Coldplay commercialized themselves and lost what they had originally. This first foray has traces of what was left of Britpop, with mostly stripped down instrumentals outside of Yellow which added in some more for texture. I can see why this is just Yellow and 9 other songs, but those other songs are good enough to not let Coldplay be a one hit wonder. Unfortunate. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Yellow

🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (rounded down for lack of replay potential) Better than my bigoted Coldplay heart set me up for. The percussion bordered on earlyish Radiohead-esque, and I felt like this had an earlyish U2 feeling even. It got a little too ballady by the end but I enjoyed it. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing

I unapologetically love a solid third to half of this album, and I'm really okay with the rest, too. Very nostalgic, almost a five for me.

This album makes me wish this was on an out of 10 scale and not out of 5. Too many good songs to just be mid but I cant say I was loving the album as a whole. Each song has the same 4 cord feel and it becomes really boring when intently listening.

I don't hate Coldplay but even at their best they're pretty dopey. Chris Martin's voice alternates between perfectly pleasant and a falsetto that should be classified as a bladed weapon (and he's not afraid to use it). The music is sometimes lovely.

Probably a Marmite band and realise I should either love or hate them. They don't evoke any response from me at all really though. I didn't mind having this on in the background but can't say I either enjoyed hearing it or needed to switch it off. I've no need to listen again though as I hear Yellow and Trouble on the radio enough and the rest are just boring in the same way songs from other artists like Ed Sheeran are to me. Chris Martin sounded as if he had almost woken up towards the end of Everything's Not Lost. Unfortunately by that time everything was.

Okay okay we all know Coldplay are crap and overplayed but …. I cannot help but like this album despite this! To provide some context I was a very miserable 19 year old and like most people this age I was still trying to navigate my own music tastes. I bought Shiver when it was released and loved it (I still standby the fact that this is a great song!) I also think I had Brothers & Sisters on Fierce Panda which had unfortunately been lost in some flat move at some point. Anyway, I saw them support Muse and they were great, I bought Parachutes and it was great at the time. Do I still think they’re great - no not really (although I don’t have any hatred for them, just a bit dull)…. But… for a short time they made a miserable me happy and for that I am grateful.

So boring, like maybe peak boring (except Turin Brakes and so help me lord if they are on this list I think I may actually quit). Dude can't sing and they haven't got the plug-ins in place to correct that just yet. In fact, this has to be one of the worst produced records on this list. The drums, in particular, are so so terrible, narrow and tinny and so distracting. I get that this was probably made on the cheap, and sounds 'cosy', but I'm pretty sure anyone can mic a drum kit up better than this. Also, anyone can play drums better than this lol. (The guitar on the chorus of 'Don't Panic' and at the start of 'Shiver' is good, so there's that. I think Coldplay as a whole are popular because their music is SO bland and Martin's lyrics so absolutely nothing that you can interpret everything however you want.)

More of a band effort it sounds like than rush of blood. I like the spies one a lot. Evocative shit.

There's something magical about the patience of 00s indie music. The xx mastered it like no one else, but there's a patience with Parachutes that makes it a really nice listen. I'm going to pick up Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends 99/100 times, but that one listen to Parachutes is great, especially on a dark rainy day like today

I once heard someone argue that Coldplay is sacred music for secular people and I've never heard a more accurate description.

About 2/3 of the way through this album, I started to get worried that I might have to give 5 stars to Coldplay, the band that I proclaimed the worst band in the world around 2005. My position has relaxed significantly since then, but still was not expecting to like this so much. Fortunately it kind of petered out at the end.

One of my fav albums oat. I have a hard love/hate relationship with Coldplay but their first couple of albums are some of the best soft rock/pop rock ever made. Always a great time to revisit it

Fine. I'll concede that whatever mania possessed people to make this an Earth-shattering album probably warrants it's inclusion in the list, but seriously -- what makes it so special?? Is it the vocals? He can do a decent enough falsetto, but it's not special. The music? Its competent but kinda languid and vanilla. I just don't see it. It's not *bad* music. It's more like background music. Something that could fill the aural space in a mid-sized, quality restaurant, where the diners aren't particularly loud. It's farm-to-table music for a farm-to-table restaurant. This is a highly overrated record that doesn't do anything for me. I don't hate it, but I'm not going batshit insane over it either. Their most popular song is "Yellow" but the whole album is the living embodiment of 'beige'. (3/5)

What a pouty, whiny, sigh of an album this is. Even the chord changes of the acoustic guitar find a way to be overly shrill and melodramatic. Thankfully there were track numbers and short pauses to distinguish where one song ended and the next one began, as even those weren't sufficient enough for me to notice a few of the times. The one song that all of them blend into is fine, I suppose, particularly as a soundtrack for staring at one's feet and kicking rocks about, but as I was not in the mood or setting do do so it left me melancholy and mildly dissatisfied. I'll round it up to a 3/5 for being so abundantly flat with its highs and lows, but am certainly not looking forward to their other, lower rated offering on this list.

And maybe with good reason. As much as I try to avoid celebrity gossip and that kind of junk pop culture, when there's so much of it about certain people, some is bound to seep through. Let's ignore all that though and look at these guys as a musical act. While never near the top of any list of mine, I think it's pretty impossible maintain any sort of shock that they were successful. Their hits at least are all pretty melodically forward, very easy to digest, and aimed squarely at the mainstream. As i get older, I find it harder to dismiss something entirely just because it isn't my cup of tea. At least I find it harder to shit on stuff. I also find it entirely worth my time to at least dip in and take a look at these huge acts that didn't necessarily ever gel with me. Yes, believe it or not, when something leaves a giant pop cultural footprint, it's worth investigating why. That doesn't mean you have to like it, but there's a reason it connected with SO many people. THE TRACKS "Don't Panic" - I had thought the only track I would recognize on here was "Yellow", and had assumed all the other hits had come on later albums. But nope. I remember always reading comparisons to Radiohead and Travis way back when, and I can sort of here it in the focus on melody, the slick production and the incorporation some interesting instrumental swings that recall mid period U2. This is perfectly fine, low key sad boy stuff, and is very hummable. "Shiver" - I'll be damned, another one I recognize. I hear a little more Grandaddy and some Doves in here this time. While it doesn't necessarily bother me, I can see how Martin's voice could grate on some people. He seems to vacillate between lazy, almost slurred delivery and his falsetto for the chorus. This is pretty damn catchy as well. "Spies" - Alright, maybe I have heard this whole thing before? My wife might own this actually, I'll have to check ( she does not - so where have I heard all these?). Starting to see some of the criticism of Martin's vocals. If every song you sing is sung like a love song, are they all love songs? Or are none of them? Maybe I'm confusing the permanently dreamy, just woke up delivery for something it's not. This is very middle of the road, and apart from the nice guitar tremolo, not much here I could find to interest me. Also, the "epic" ending felt very unearned. "Sparks" - Another one I recognize! This was a nice bit of a slow hangovery shuffle. Catchy, and pretty in all the right places. Martin's voice serves this pace a little better maybe. "Yellow" - Woof. Ok. I get it. It's super catchy, and a sing-a-long chorus that seems tailor made for big arena concerts. I can see it. I just hate both Martin's delivery here - it presages the baby-doll, "indie girl" or "cursive" singing that people all complain about nowadays. This is the SAME shit. Also the lyrics are the worst sort of placeholder nonsense. I don't mind dumb lyrics, or even nonsensical ones, but this one gets to me in the same way that Elton John's "Rocketman" does where it all SEEMS to make sense until you pay attention. Is yellow supposed to be the color of those stars? Is it some representation of happiness? I guess smiley faces are yellow? Some flowers are yellow? I don't know, but I tend to think disease and decay, decadence, or even urine when I think of yellow. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Catchy, hooky, good arrangement. Hate the vocals, confused by the message. This is 20/20 hindsight, but the more cynical part of me can also see this as the moment Martin cracked the formula and his eyes briefly turned into cartoon $$s ( or ££s I guess?). His Eureka moment where he discovered the secret of separating millions of wine mom's from $15.98 plus tax. "Trouble" - The hits keep coming I guess. I really thought all this stuff was spread out among 2-3 albums. Another fine arrangement, and a very catchy vocal melody in both the verse, the main piano line, and a sweeping, soaring chorus. Martin seems to have an ok range, so I can't tell if the falsetto he slips into in between even syllables in the same word is a conscious decision of an affect. I think the song would be better without it, but would it be as successful. He's SO EMOTIONAL, you guys - you can really feel it in his delivery! "Parachutes" - Not really worth mentioning other than what a weird choice for your title track to be a nothing of barely an interlude. "High Speed" - Some noodly, much more basic feeling adult contemporary stuff here, more in the mold of a slow motion Dave Matthews. That said, Martin's voice is much more under control here and maintains a mainline feel. I also have heard this one though. Somehow. "We Never Change" - The first real dud on here for me. This one relies almost entirely on Martin and his sub-Nick Drake-isms. There's not much at all going on here instrumentally either. Maybe just a hint of some interesting atmosphere with that echoey twangy "Sleep Walk" guitar. "Everything's Not Lost" - This didn't really work for me either. This felt like a swing into a sort of attempt at a Warren Zevon or Randy Newmanesque 70s, witty piano ditty. Not these guys' strong suit, I have to say. I can imagine this was designed to be the moment the lighters coming out for at the live show. A much better sing-a-long chorus would be needed for that though. Closest thing to a wet fart on this album we've had yet. "Life Is For Living" - The hidden track. Are there any albums from '95-'01 or so that DIDN'T have a hidden track? Or two? "Guys that last track didn't work. We have to out-schmaltz it. TO THE COLD CAVE!" Some sort of weird take on a waltz, this feels less like an outro than a just plain unfinished song, one that also feels well outside their purview. HIGHLIGHTS - "Don't Panic" - "Shiver" - "Sparks" - "Trouble" MIDLIGHTS - "Spies" - "Yellow" - "High Speed" LOWLIGHTS - "We Never Change" - "Everything's Not Lost" - "Life Is For Living" FINAL THOUGHTS I didn't hate this by any means. It was full of a lot of nice melodies, nice production, fine playing, and interesting arrangements. My biggest issues were that it all seemed very self serious and had an aura of "this is important, this means something" that rubbed me the wrong way in the same way that U2's "Rattle and Hum" era stuff did. Martin's vocals also got old pretty fast, and I wish he'd had some more energy on some of these, and had varied his delivery a bit more. Might have to see if I can find any covers that hit me better to verify. I could be wrong though, maybe that just awake at 4Am after a night of heavy drinking voice is more of an integral part of the sound than i want to admit. There just wasn't anything worthy of any hatred, Mild contempt maybe? It's a professional sounding, hook-filled, hit delivery machine. I can look at this in the same way people might have looked at Christopher Cross in the late 70s/ early 80s. Finely crafted music aimed squarely at a particular audience, that was maybe unfairly maligned by the cool kids. Sure, I enjoy a bit of "Sailing" and I won't necessarily kick "Arthur's Theme" out of bed, but by the time "Ride Like the Wind" comes around, I'm a bit weary of the approach. Sure, ALL popular bands are guilty of repeating what works. But the best ones do evolve and provide some variety. Coldplay feels surprisingly fully formed here, and I'm willing to guess I could keep going through their discography without seeing very much development at all. As much as my younger self would hate to admit it, this does not feel like it was undeservedly loved by the masses. At least not in the way that it was baffling or anything. I can totally see why this went down smooth. It's just never was, and remains not my thing. You just won't catch me performatively turning the radio station in disgust or making a snide comment when I hear them. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Those four catchiest ones are worth rescuing, but won't be making it anywhere near my 5-star playlist. Coldplay seems to have made an entire album filled with that one track I tend to skip on other, better, albums. The music is fine, it’s straight forward soft rock. I cannot stand the lead singers vocals though and it just adds to the low energy milquetoast sound. What they do isn’t for me but they do it well at least. I’ll never put this on by choice. 2/5

it's coldplay innit. i've never listened to a full album of theirs before and maybe i'm letting my prejudices get the better of me, but it was exactly what i expected. not much to complain about, but not much that stands out, either. mushy.

Coldplays peak

Almost had me going at a 4 despite myself. First quarter of the album felt a little less polished than the made-for-commercial-licensing arena pop rock they are now. Like a millenial U2 or a bit easier-listening indie rock band. Shiver even evoked a bit of the Fiona Energy for me but as the album went on, the songs got a little sleepier and the lyrics cheesier here and there.

Like many, I don't particularly enjoy the band Coldplay has become. However, I really enjoyed revisiting this album that I loved in my youth. Sure, Chris Martin isn't going to win any awards for the lyrics, and he's never been a great singer, but those things make this album really approachable. It's like a comforting hug.

Tried to forget it was Coldplay so I could be objective. The first 2 tracks are good.

Really solid pop-rock from Coldplay. “Coldplay used to be good” is kinda overdone at this point but based on this album i’m inclined to agree. The songs are all about love i think? New relationships, unrequited love, failing relationships. Works for me honestly. I’m also really drawn to Chris Martin’s voice here. Very charming and fits the songs well. If i think about it for too long i start to hear that chainsmokers song he was on…. Some of the twinkly lead guitar work sounds like ringtones/corporate training music but i understand that trope probably comes from companies ripping THIS off.

Greatness, I think that English speaking people may be biased torwards disliking this album because of how many times the songs were on loop for a long time, but not being exposed to any of that means getting to really appreciate every single song.

I've never listened to this album but I sure that I have heard enough of the songs from it. Well enough to know I will automatically give this a 1 star.

I came into this project not liking the Coldplay that I'd heard, but when I listened to A Rush of Blood to the Head last year, I was pleasantly surprised. I don't like this one as much. I recognize "Sparks" from a movie, I think? Wedding Crashers? Google confirms it! I like that one. It's a simultaneously funny and sad comment on the times we live in that this band will be best remembered for the people allegedly having an affair at their concert. I liked the middle of this album ("Sparks" through "Trouble" ) but the rest didn't do too much for me. 3 stars. (Which I now see is what I gave A Rush of Blood to the Head, which I remember liking more than this. Call this one a low 3 and that one a higher 3. The perils of a 5-point rating system.)

I remember hearing 'Yellow' on the radio and thinking that it sounded like an updated Radiohead without Thom Yorke. Maybe Radiohead was going back to its Brit Pop roots? Now, I am not the fondest of many of Radiohead's more Brit Pop era. I find it a bit too emo, whiny and self indulgent. I have heard all the hits off the Parachutes album. The first few times, the songs are catchy but not too catchy; hummable but not cloying. They seemed to lack the animus that I feel towards Radiohead. So, more boring? Coming back to this album, this is a hits album with other songs. It showed the way out of the Brit Pop era to another way of continuing the popular parts. It feels more personal and less political. Simpler music. Aside from the hits which have now become overplayed though I still like 'Yellow', 'We Never Change' is something I would like. Given that this is their debut album, I would be more likely to give it a 3 than the 2 or 2.5 that I think it deserves. It serves as a template. Nothing is too crazy or different, just a way back. Like rock returning to something like its roots every generation, I feel that British music goes through these kind of waves.

Seeing people label this as boring or depressing is absolutely insane to me. Coldplay slander is rooted so deep in our society and I'm tired of seeing it. This is genuinely a beautiful album with super passionate and heartfelt songs, and I can't take anyone seriously who can't at least see that, even if it's not your thing. I love how calming each and every song is, even with the more upbeat moments still having that underlying sense of comfort and even sounding really inspiring at times. For an album as mainstream and widely known as this, I think it's amazing how well it has aged, and looking back on it over 25 years later is has absolutely stood the test of time, and only further solidifies Coldplay's first 4 albums as an absolutely generational streak in pop music history.

I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I was that guy who said "everyone who thinks Coldplay is a shit band is a fucking idiot" and instantly blew my brains out. I am writing this review as a spectre to say that anyone who gets that defensive about this four chord piece of overhyped trash should listen to someone do a musical scale and have an out of body experience about how many notes exist. This is the epitome of "it's alright".

A classic that deserves at least one listen even if you aren’t a Coldplay fan. This is the only album I’ve heard in full other than Moon Music and I would give this a 7/10

look, i'm not a coldplay hater. i really enjoy a few of their songs. i even like their dancey/house turn in the past few years! so please know it isn't coming from a kneejerk place of obligate haterade when i say that this was boring AF. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. if yellow is your big dance number, you've made a dull-ass record

2.5 rounded down to 2 because Coldplay sucks even if this album has its occasional moments.

There was a time I would have sworn that A Rush of Blood to the Head was the best Coldplay (Viva La Vida eventually dethroned that album), but as I get older and their career advances, it becomes clear that Rush was the band perfecting a formula that they would use off and on for the rest of time. This album edges out Rush these days because it is hungry and imperfect.

Thoughts before listening: I think this is the one with "Yellow.". It's fine. Review: Yeah, it's fine is about the best I can give this. "Yellow" is a really good song ("Trouble" is pretty good too), but Coldplay is just so boring to me. Sure there are some anthems here, coming off as clones of just the ballads from Bends-era Radiohead (although "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" are much better songs), but the lack of any grit whatsoever just grates on me. I'll give it 2 stars for the anthems I guess.

Mechanic: “So, what’s the problem?” Customer: “Oh, my car’s just been making this awful racket” Mechanic: “Have you tried taking out the Coldplay CD?” All jokes aside (thanks Emily), I don’t think Coldplay fits the unlistenable label as for the most part they’re quite pleasant, they’re just really easy to hate on since they’re popular. Chris Martin’s a pretty good singer in small doses and Yellow is definitely a solid song, even if it’s a little overplayed I just don’t care for the variety and overall sound, just too samey for me. That slow mellow theme every song has works well in a vacuum but I really don’t think this one showcases the bands talents very well, and I know they’re more creative than that. Maybe it’s because Coldplay is commercialized now but it just feels a bit soulless, like they were given a very specific prompt for what kinda music to make (even if they executed on that limited prompt pretty well) Still think they get too much hate but this is definitely not their finest work, it’s just not exciting or thought provoking

Good stuff, definitely a preview of things to come. Not up to the level of Rush Of Blood To The Head, obviously, but decent music and decently mixed. Not quite to the level of a 4, probably more of a 3+...

I so badly wanted to like this more than I did. The production is nice and clean. Very straightforward, but nothing wrong with that. There is some pretty good stuff on here! “Yellow,” “Don't Panic,” and “Trouble,” are all pretty great! Unfortunately a lot of the album is mind numbingly boring. And unfortunately, I do think coldplay is often unfairly trashed on, which ends up making their output a bit underrated, ultimately, but after listening to this album, I can kind of understand why they have the reputation they have in popular culture. Nothing here is bad, but boy, can it be a bit dull.

Bright jangly pop-rock like Yellow and Shiver are interspersed with ethereal introspective tracks like Spies and Trouble. Great vocals and the guitar melodies are sublime with their spaced-out reverb. A fantastic album all the way through, never disappoints.

#26 It's too bad Coldplay just makes corporate-slop music these days, because they really had something special in their early years. This is a strong debut album, and holds up great 26 years later.

I like the album

Coldplay are a bit wet but there are a few songs on this album I do enjoy. Particularly Trouble.

Hard to decouple my rating from the deep nostalgia I have for this, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y. Whatever your opinion of 2026 Coldplay, I don’t think you can deny these albums sound great and have some absolutely classic songs on them.

I feel like Coldplay is like bread. The same basic ingredients go into every song, it's pretty beige or white for the most part, not a lotta spice involved overall, but it's still good. Bread is good. Also white people tend to go bonkers over even subpar bread (I say as a white person who does this, AND as a white person who enjoys Coldplay. I'm part of the problem.)

Enjoyable debut from Coldplay who got a lot more love from the critics back then. Yellow is probably the most memorable track but I think Shiver is maybe song of the album.

Oh cool, the other well regarded Coldplay album that i’ve been meaning to listen to, (and i loved that other one!) Pleased to say this was solid throughout, don’t love it as much as the following album, but it was beautifully somber and melancholic throughout. Standouts are Sparks, We Never Change and Everything’s Not Lost.

I've nothing against Coldplay per se, but I do struggle to understand how they became so big!! It's competent, and musically quite good in places, but nothing exceptional

i get why 13 year olds in the 00s might have liked this. it truly is the corporatized, radiohead light product. songs about spies coming out of the water because they are “watching” us. oh and the stars! theyre yellow! did you know??? thats love. competent playing for a band that really liked “ok computer” but specifically the song that sounds like radiohead playing a competent 90s clean guitar rock song. sigh. this band only gets worse from here.

This is like 1989 but I have good memories of the songs. I have no idea if I’m a nostalgia merchant but god they could write. A shame about their newer stuff.

My problem with Coldplay has always been that they seem to conflate melancholy with lifelessness. The muted production, softly spoken lyrics just do nothing for me. Especially when, despite how overplayed and generic Yellow might come off, it is a clear example of what good comes out of actually injecting some vivacity into their endeavours. Lukaku Starts.

Coldplay. The butt of any respectable music critic's jokes. It's hard to pin down exactly what makes them so strongly in a league of their own. I hazard it's because Chris Martin, and his music, is so endearing, so non-confrontational, that he is unlike any real human being. Despite his many human errors, such as naming his kid Apple. The fact of the matter is, I respect the band's standing greatly. They've carved out this identity, that's genuine, that's significant. And therefore, I can't go too low here. But the songwriting is pretty dull, the lyrics insipid and the production too clean. That is the Coldplay way. I wouldn't want it any other. Closer to a 2 than a 4.

Had forgotten I actually quite liked this at the time, and not without reason. Nicely-crafted (if rather inoffensive) songs that actually sound like humans creating music together, with some subtly effective guitar playing. Have basically hated everything they've done since, though...

For the life of me I cannot remember why Coldplay became such a huge fucking band. They are mid and put out mid albums.

You know how I know you’re gay? You like Coldplay. Ok that’s an old bit, just had to make some kind of Coldplay joke. Either way, on with the album. Honestly, I was kind of torn with this one. There were elements I did like, such as the jangly guitar on songs like Don’t Panic and Spies, which is one of my standouts. But on the other hand, Chris Martin’s voice can get kind of old over a long period of time, and sometimes it feels like he doesn’t vary his singing: He sings regularly for a while, and then goes to his head voice when he wants to sound emotional. I also thought that the instrumentation in some of the songs could end up feeling too similar to other songs on the album. I do think that there are good ideas in this album, which would be expanded upon in some of the band’s later releases, but to me, this album is kind of hit or miss, a rough landing if you will.

Ah, haven't heard this one for ages. Can you believe that this is 25 years old? Strong debut album, no misses for me here.

When this album came out, my coworker ripped a copy of the CD for me on day one, handed it to me, saying, "You *have* to listen to this." Sure I'll give it a shot. This album stayed in my car changer as long as I owned that car. It's a remarkably good debut album, and such a standout from what was on offer at the time. There's a reason why fucking Coldplay became fucking Coldplay. This album doesn't contain their best song (Clocks, come at me), but it is as good of a debut album as can be.

Hear me out. This is a great record; it is warm, cozy, delightful - it's intimate in a way that none of their other records are. Their next album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head," got a lot of praise for its elevated ambitions, sounding bigger and bolder and more arena-friendly, and I think the band never got over that. Everything Coldplay has done since has been scientifically generated in a lab to evoke the most grandeur and majesty underneath sweeping universal ideas. But their best work is this tiny little record, where the title track is only 45 seconds. I realize this rating is biased, because I was absolutely the target audience for this record when it came out in 2000 - I remember seeing the posters for "Parachutes" all over the underground in London that summer, alongside Dido and Travis. It has a special place in my heart, and for me is a solid - FIVE STARS

It’s always difficult to rate their first two albums in light of what they later became, I.e. stadium rock, music by numbers for people who don’t like music but want something on in the background and to tell their friends they went to see Coldplay. Nevertheless this is a solid debut album, well produced with good moments and Yellow holds up well after more than a quarter of a century. Some of it is a bit bland though, 7/10

Not my cuppa tea

Exactly what you'd expect a Coldplay album to get from me. I do hold a couple of these tracks in very high esteem (Trouble, Yellow), but the rest are decent too.

Why is there so much hate for Chris Martin and Copldplay? They've never been my favorite group. But the produce some solid work. This album hits like any great lo-fi. I've never felt strongly either way about Coldplay. I do really like a few of their songs, but never really gotten too in to them. I've also never listened to one of their albums all the way through before and doing so made me realize how much all their songs sound the same. that being said, Yellow is a banger.

Parachutes by coldplay was a beautiful album, (ik shocker). It was the first time i listened to the full album. Such a greya debut album. So incredibly human. To me it felt like even though life sucks sometimes, loving and feeling is the greatest gift of this life. What are we without love and grief and empathy and sadness and guily and joy. Nothing. Even the bad times are a reminder we are still alive.

I've called early Coldplay Radiohead clones a lot, but to be fair to them, being a copy of a better band doesn't automatically make you bad. Also, this is just a personal thing, but I remember in secondary school EVERYBODY'S favourite song was Yellow, and I didn't get it then, and I extra don't get it after listening to the whole album. Maybe the simple lyrics spoke to all the 13 year olds.

Can't believe I'm giving coldplay a 3, but this was better than expected

Honestly, I didn’t think I’d like this album that much until just now. The guitar playing is great, and Chris Martin’s vocals are warm and melancholic. There are amazing tracks on here such as “Yellow” and “Sparks” that give you the feels all the way through. I enjoyed this quite a bit and works definitely listen to it again. Overall Score: Strong 7

Yellow is the biggest star on the album. It is impressive what they’ve created after learning about the pressure they faced of putting this out and their uncertainty and inexperience as a band at this point. Enjoyed the outro of High speed. A solid debut. 7/10.

Polarising reviews for this one! For me, not overly familiar with Coldplay, a welcome relief after days of shouting high driving metal. Something more melodious, harmonic and laid back. Downside, it does become rather boring quickly.

I made fun of this because it was the album that dropped on my birthday. But honestly, it starts pretty strong and I love the piano. Green Eyes is sweet.

Their earlier work is decent, "Yellow" and "Trouble" being the obvious hits from this album. I understand why people hate on them so much but sometimes I think its just easier to say you hate them rather than admit to some guilty pleasures.

No terminé de escucharlo y ya voy a Puntuarlo. Es muy buen álbum, no se puede decir nada más. Buenas instrumental, instrumentos bien definidos (principalmente la batería, me encantó la presencia que tiene) La voz de Chris Martin se acopla muy bien con la instrumental. Es una lástima que hayan ido por un camino más comercial pero bueno, decisiones. ¿Se merecen todo el hate que reciben? Puede ser ¿Es realmente una buena banda? No lo creo, demasiado blanda. No iría a uno de sus conciertos, no me gana el FOMO como pasó últimamente. Gracias y un beso.

Pretty cool album, very somber and atmospheric. Sparks and Yellow have been some of my favorite Coldplay songs, and they really fit with the album. High Speed was another stand out I like. 6.7/10

First two reviews of this album were 1s, don't understand why. It's a great, chill vibe. Amazing debut album. Have enjoyed this one since childhood.

I liked some of the songs "just fine" but really didn't like some of the songs too. The problem is, I didn't like ANY of the songs enough to offset that, hence the mediocre score. It's an "ok" record... very middle of the road pop-rock-y.

recognized Yellow from hearing it on the radio, but that's about the only feeling i had during this. pretty bland overall. it has the trappings of being emotional but nothing about the music conveys emotion, so it just comes off as hollow

An not-quite-perfect but solid debut album that showed so much promise. Unfortunately it was better than everything that would come after.

So I know it’s not kosher to say you like Coldplay. And yes Chris can come across as a bit of a twat. But listening to parachutes fresh after a few years I have to say it is a stunningly accomplished debut album. It’s hard to hear anything new into such oversaturated radio songs as yellow, don’t panic and to some extent shiver but I could appreciate the tight musicianship they have and the absolute conviction in the lyrical delivery which makes them sound like they are 8-10 years in -not fresh on the scene. I do prefer two of their follow ups (Rush of blood and viva la vida) as more complete albums whereas parachutes doesn’t quite hold together as well as an album. The lesser songs are very much filler but with six standouts that’s far better than average. So hate on me all you want but, ignoring the public image (and thank the almighty we are far past the Chris and Gwynth show) I still feel you can really appreciate this for the music.

17 million copies sold worldwide. Surely 17 MILLION people can't be wrong, can they? Look, I am not saying they are wrong. I'm just saying 17 million people clearly have poor, boring taste. I actually gave this album a full three spins to give it a fair shake. Nope, not for me. 'Yellow' makes me unreasonably angry listening to that whining voice. The good news is there are 9 other songs on this album. The bad news is none of them are any better. Then again none of them are worse either... so theres that.

Better than you’d expect Coldplay to be. They are Radiohead from Temu even though I don’t like regular Radiohead much to begin with. The more pop edge makes it a bit more enjoyable to listen for me. The album kind of switches between melancholic, pleasant and boring. Sometimes leans too much in the boring direction but it’s good enough to not hate.

First album I've actually listened to in full before this challenge. Very cool to hate Coldplay but this album and Rush of Blood are straight bangers. 5/5.

I only consider the first two Coldplay albums good. This is the first. Later it all became just generic. No shame to admit, this is a great album (in spite of the bandwagon Coldplay critique). I especially enjoy the last 4 songs.

This was an annoying listen as a late 90s teen into the alt/indie - Coldplay just took all that was good of that era and toned it down towards britpop to make bland and inoffensive shite for cheating CEOs I was very close to giving this a 1 (especially after Yellow) but there's just a bare glimmer of composition and emotion in Shiver and Everything's Not Lost that brings it just barely over the line

Great sounds and perfect arrangements trying to prop up lacklustre songs with little to say and even less urgency to say it.

Pretty good.

Chris Martin may have an insufferable quality to him but this album is a perfect exhibition as to why they are pop music. The good kind of pop. Their songs have been used countless times whether it was to get through troubling times, coming to terms with terminal illness, the wonder of life and love - this album absolutely deserves merit for evoking such visceral emotions. To impact masses in the way they did in the early 2000s should not be dismissed.

My god, the first two albums were so fantastic. It's really a shame how they turned into a shitty commercial band shortly after that.

Sure it's not rocking out but the songs are *good*. But then again I've always had a soft spot for Don't Panic, Shiver, Everything's Not Lost and others because they were everywhere when I was in high school. Later Coldplay got more boring/bland but this was good

Can’t wait for the reviews of this one that will entirely be based on Coldplay becoming unfathomably massive. There is plenty to criticise about their later career but this stands up as a fantastic debut album. Haven’t revisited this in years so thoroughly enjoyed it

You know what, I don’t like Coldplay, it’s overblown sentimental nonsense. But i enjoyed this album, the production is lovely, the guitar parts are really nice. I’d probably give this album a 4 if it wasn’t for Chris Martin. And I don’t even know if that’s because of him on this album, or just everything else he’s done has ruined any chance of me enjoying his contribution to this album.

Very good album. For some reason, I had never listened to Coldplay with real interest. I found this album very good. I enjoyed "Sparks", "Yellow", "Trouble" (I'd say this was my favourite track), or "High Speed". It's a solid 4.

Mostly meh. I didn't hate it and even recognized one song from 2000. But the songs all tended to sound the same and the vocals were delivered with a monotone.

Bit dull

Viva La Vida is the best Coldplay album, hands down. Parachutes has good tracks on it and there are some songs on here that I LOVE, but there are other songs I don't necessarily love either.

Listened to this a bunch when it first came out. Great debut album - really enjoy all the tracks from start to finish. Just a bit too subdued to earn 5 stars.

I don't really know what to say. It was an okay listen but I wasn't incredibly interested for most of it.

This is a pleasant, inoffensive listen. It's interesting, because Coldplay isn't shy about dissonance or crunchy sound effects, but everything has this shiny gloss over it. I don't know enough about music production to put my finger on what's missing, but I'll say I wish some of those rougher details had a chance to really breathe. The distorted guitar in "Yellow" is an example — it's there and you hear it, but it's not as in your face as it could or should be. Its sorta under the stage as the more attractive parts of the song take center stage. The music itself is good. It's all well written, lyrics are decent, and performance is excellent. Not a lot of memorable stuff, though.

I consider myself a casual Coldplay fan; I like a good amount of their songs, but rarely have listened to an album of theirs from start to finish. Yellow and Trouble were the ones from this particular album I was already a fan of. The album flowed cohesively but I can’t say I took the time to dig in or came away with any other favorites.

Have never been so indifferent to discover a hidden track. That said, have to admit this is an above average album for its genre and over it's full length did just enough to edge a 4

i'm sorry. this was really, really awful. High Speed was almost good and was the only one with a different producer, so there's that. but... the lyrics aren't even intelligent enough to be insipid. they're ralph wiggum words and not the cute kind of choo-choo-choose ones. screech/whine/crying your lyrics doesn't make one sound more heartfelt either.

I mean, this is alright. I’m not a Coldplay fan, but I think it’s mostly their later stuff I can’t stand. This was never really annoying or bad or anything, though everything does sound pretty samey. The songs are way more slower and subdued than I expected but that was okay I guess.

Uy que disco que salió, a ver yo no soy muy fan de Coldplay, es una banda suave, creo que más cerca del pop que del rock, pero tienen lindas baladas y un vocalista como chris Martín que tiene una muy linda voz para este estilo de música, mezclando mucho su voz de pecho, de cabeza y falsetes. para mí parachutes es su trabajo más sólido sin duda y su mejor disco, lo que los lanzó a la fama, creo que es el disco que más puede acercarse a algo más indie que pop. Tiene una producción muy delicada, la mezcla entre la guitarra acústica y la eléctrica de la derecha suena muy bien, son melodías que suenan mágicas y atmosféricas, creo que también aporta algo distinto la afinación que tiene la guitarra de chris martin tocando acordes abiertos, usando todas las cuerdas, tiene bajos y baterías simples que le dan lo que necesita a cada canción, algo sencillo y rítmico mientras la voz y las guitarras le dan el relieve. Este disco está lleno de melodías que se te quedan pegadas y de una mezcla de distintas emociones, con música en tonos tristes, melancólicos y reflexivos y letras de amor y algo más optimistas de lo que puede sonar la música. Es de los discos más vendidos en Reino Unido de este siglo, es su trabajo discográfico más comercial lo que puede deberse a un mundo de la música que empezaba a experimentar cada vez más, Coldplay vuelve a lo básico y con muy buenas canciones. Personalmente es de mis discos favoritos que he escuchado, debe estar dentro de mis 30 discos favoritos quizás (hasta ahora) Canción favorita: me gustan casi todas, destaco sparks y trouble unos temazos (para no nombrar yellow que es otra canción muy muy linda) Este disco es un 4 y creo que junto a la this it es el disco que más disfruto de los que han salido hasta ahora

I don’t know who this is for. There’s some halfway interesting guitar work on a few tracks, and the bass is actually pretty dope, but otherwise this whole record is dull as dishwater. The title track seemed promising, but then it was only a few seconds long. Bummer.

Thoughts while listening: Hey Chris, Martín, do you like Jeff Buckley? I can see why I thought of them as a Radiohead tribute band but I was mistaken, they’re just huge fans of Grace.

Honestly, never listened to coldplay album up to this point, because I thought they were just a ,,hits band’’. But boy was I wrong, it is so good it’s crazy. Such a comfort album, sets you in a mood like no other. Still feel like some parts of it are just okay but nonetheless great listen.

Every element of this just feels kinda lifeless and unmoving. I don't mind listening to it but I wouldn't say I enjoy it either. I can't be bothered to feel strongly about it one way or the other

We live in a beautiful world, yeah we do, but we lost something truly special as Chris Martin tried and failed to mature as a musician. Oh how I miss the band Coldplay once was. The absolute mastery of naughties yearning, every single song on this album is top of it's class for experiencing your life as a personal anguished unrequited love montage. Even now, the strains of Shiver are literally yanking at my heartstrings like I've been pining after the girl of my dreams but she just doesn't know I exist. The album is full of songs that are the equivalent of musical valium. The bass line of Sparks for example brings to mind nothing more that being half asleep on a sunny afternoon. It's delicate and complex, like all the songs on this record, the chord progressions are genuinely delicious. How the writer of this album is responsible for 'A Headful of Dreams' or even the album art on it for that matter, is one of the great mysteries of the 21st century. There is literally not a song on the album that doesn't deserve to be called out by name, but I think Yellow deserves special mention for probably being the single that even people who never got the CD would know inside out. I have to believe its written into the DNA of all brits born before the year 2000. Which to be fair is getting on a bit. Anyway, it's a 5 star album, there isn't a bad song on it, not even a filler track really - and the final song Everything's Not Lost even pulls you up out of your lovelorn malaise so tenderly you might actually tearfully believe it's central refrain.

Nice melodies, will definitely listen again to this record.

#111/1001 🇬🇧🥱 Every morning since getting this app i wake and dutifuly update my review of the previous days album, then refresh in anticipation of the next album. Like Russian Roulette, i've always known this was coming. I've always promised that i would listen to every album on here in whole, impartially. So this one starts ok actually, then Shiver sounds like Jeff Buckley without an ounce of passion. By the time it gets the song about spies coming out of the water i was getting a bit bored. Then you have the double whammy of Yellow and Trouble which are just excruciating. The rest is pretty nondescript. 😴😴😴😴😴😴 Best Tracks: Don't Panic.

I still think “Don’t Panic” is a really incredible song. I don’t really still feel that about “Yellow.” The rest of the album is less memorable, inoffensive but a little lacking in character. 2.5 stars, rounded up because I did enjoy “Everything’s Not Lost.”

This is Coldplay's debut album. (!!) Parachutes is like a long walk. The first track is one where you put on your headphones, close your eyes, and nod your head back and forth. It's comforting and familiar, like the route you're about to take. Once you get a mile under your belt, you're starting to feel tired but will continue on. Your mind starts going, you reflect upon the past and look into the future. The walk continues, the steps mount and you get tired but will continue on knowing the satisfaction felt after completing physical activity. Back home now, on the couch and a beautiful baseline backed by relaxing production and a soothing voice tells you "It's a beautiful life to be grateful for"

Me gustó. Siento que es un álbum "limpio", buenas letras y buena música y me encanta la voz de Chris Martin by the way. De este álbum hay muchas canciones que son mundialmente conocidas y con razón por qué son muy buenas. Mí favorita es "Shiver".

Despite current reputation, Coldplay's debut still holds up as pretty good Radiohead inspired pop rock. The Radiohead comparisons as they came up were definitely not unfounded, but I think they do well enough to set them selves apart from what the Head was up to at this time by focusing on a more acoustic sound. I enjoyed my time here although, I think that feeling would diminish the further towards present day in their catalogue your listening though. A band that started with a great initial sound, but never really evolved into something more interesting.

I’m relatively new to Coldplay; I like their sound. Can’t decide if the U2 stadium rock influence is too much, or whether they do enough innovative with it. I think I like the other coldplay album in the challenge better. This is a 3 for now, but i’d like another listen.

People hate on Coldplay because they're mainstream and frankly, I'm often one of them. Some good songs, mostly a bit boring. This album was... all right. The rhythm section can be surprisingly groovy. Maybe Coldplay would benefit from being centered less around Chris Martin.

Anyone that was a teenager during the melodramatic phenomenon that was 'Garden State' is going to remember this album. It got a lot of time on my high school girlfriend's CD player. I don't really have a 'dog in this fight' as a non-fan but this is probably Coldplay's best album. The recording quality and instrumentation are done very well. I have issues with the singing and lyrics but that's just my personal taste. When this album came out I interpreted it kind of like 'OK Computer but without anything that will make you feel weird'. It's an inoffensive listen

Que BONITO álbum. Hermoso de pies a cabeza. Sparks es tranquilamente una de las canciones con más emoción de este universo, nunca falla en hacerme llorar, creo que es de lo más bonito que hay en la música. Es destacable por donde lo mires, sacan un hermoso sonido en todo. Pensar que es un debut album también tiene mucho que decir. Definitivamente un album que no tiene linea del tiempo, es contemporáneo cuando lo escuches. Super fresco y único.

Coldplay... they really leave me cold. This album is as bland and insipid as they can be. It doesn't get any better, and the songs are a mixture of ballads and some more upbeat songs that I have not ended up liking at all. There is some nice stuff in here, although, but it just consists of good ideas of which its execution and delivery have not impressed me the least, so I don't even think I've really liked any song on this record. I just find this band a very popish one, and in a very bad sense. All colourful and stadium-focused, with a personality that is based on cheap emotional tracks. And I don't like any of this philosophy, it's very stripped from the essence of music itself for me. It's not something organic, but rather made very consciously, and trying to push emotions as a tool for selling. I don't know, I can't find interesting this music, it has been very boring for me to listen to this album. And this dynamic of paused songs that are clearly concert-stuff gets me off of a possible more in depth feeling or understanding of the music. It feels that it's made commercial just for the sake of having hymns to sing in front of an audience rather than focusing on making music to connect with the listener. And I lack that close feeling songs that are similar to the ones in this record have.

truly incredible what music can make you feel

Everyone had at least one friend in uni who told you they were a musician, and could play multiple instruments. When they asked you to come see them play, it was always with the knowledge that we'd still be friends even if they were a bit shit. Which they usually were. Coldplay tap in to the same crappy vibes as those guys (it's always guys). But unlike your mate, being invited to the local pub to see them, Coldplay can actually write an ok song. Parachutes is good. A few timeless classics in there. Chris Martin is still whiny.

I’ve heard this before. I was not a fan of this when it came out, although I thought “Yellow” was pretty ok. I’ll go into this with an open mind and see if my opinion has changed. So my first thought is I can’t figure out if it’s the songs or the production is more lifeless. If I had synesthesia, I would be seeing beige here. It’s offensive in its inoffensiveness. I still think Yellow is ok, and Sparks is not bad. I didn’t remember Yellow being thus lifeless, but I am remembering now I played a show in 2001 with a band who did a cover of it where there was some actual dynamic range to it. So maybe I confused the two. Maybe the other less quiet songs could be improved by a cover band, I don’t know.

Good production value and very chill album. This brings back a lot of memories from my childhood and teenage years. I never got why they were so hated and polarising. They can feel bland sometimes but sometimes a more chill relaxed album is great. However whoever called them "risk-averse radiohead" made me crack the fuck up, because you ain't wrong.

A little bland, but with some iconic bangers regardless. I had a good time, and it was such a blast to the past. Damn.
