Good chill album

Sparks live (Dakota's version) went platinum in my house

Really???? Oh god. Here we go. Honestly I’m a little surprised by how much I like this. I’d totally get caught having an affair at these guys’ concert. In all seriousness, it’s good, but I don’t think we’ll be remembering it in a hundred years. The songs are all pretty similar, which as a strength means it’s forty minutes of music to let your mind wander to—great as stereotypical gaze-out-the-window during a roadtrip music. As a weakness, it begins to become a bit bland. I guess it depends what you want out of the album. It does kinda feel like if Radiohead were a less visceral, acoustic pop-rock band. I don’t know. Sort of like if you made a stripped-back Let Down into an entire album. Maybe it’s my prejudice towards the British. Yellow is an undeniably good song, of course. And I appreciated the quick little interlude of Parachutes. Don’t Panic as an intro was also quite good—same with Everything’s Not Lost as an outro. Everything’s Not Lost is probably my favorite song on here, in fact. This gets a four not because it’s on the same level as other albums I gave a four, but because it does the job. It’s for people who like Coldplay. I’m not a people who like Coldplay. But for a people who like Coldplay, it’s perfect: vaguely ambient, sad but uplifting, inoffensive, and emotional. For an album in the Coldplay genre, it’s top of its class.

I did like this a lot. I mean it is quintessential coldplay and miles better than anything they've made in the past ten years. I had this at a high 3 rounded down but upon reflection I literally favourited ⅔ of the songs on the album so it should definitely be a 4 #silly me

I originally thought that Coldplay was a universally (and uncontriversialy) loved band but having read some of the other reviews, it appears that they do also have some haters. I however cannot get behind any of the criticism - I feel like this album is timelessly emotionally resonant, swimming in the happy medium between reminiscence and melancholy. I can't foresee a time when this album isn't widely influential and loved which is rightly so.

this is a hard one for me. i used to love this album so much and i listened to it alot in summer 2024 to the new year, however i feel it just doesn’t hit the same anymore. there are alot of really good songs on here and a few not so much - but my favourite always was and always has been shiver and i found after listening to this album i had it stuck in my head all day so i think for that reason i will round a 3.5 up to a 4

Coldplay haven’t always got it right in recent years but I enjoy this early version of them figuring things out. A pleasant listen.

The fall off is insane, didn't know coldplay made music like this Sparks I already knew and is still the best song on here. Yellow a little overplayed.

THEY’RE JUST SPIEEESSSSS

Excellent debut album. Not my favorite Coldplay album.

This was an interesting angle of Coldplay. A lot more conventional rock band components here with drums and guitars on essentially every song. Weird to feel the need to point THAT out but it is definitely a departure from a lot of the other hits everyone knows. Critically speaking it's a good album. Rush of Blood to the Head has the superior A Side, but this at least stays interesting from front to back. Yellow was huge, but I also really enjoyed Don't Panic (which was also big but not as big).

Classic Coldplay. Great.

I can't give 4.5 but i would. Loved it

Top songs: Shiver Sparks Trouble Life is for Living

easy listen, big coldplay guy favorites: we never change sparks everythings not lost 4.3 stars 8.6/10

En kuunnellut, mutta klassikkolevy. Coldplayn paras. 4/5.

Strong, classic even but doesn't move me.

The only Coldplay album that I like. Enjoyable 4/5

In the UK in the 2000s Parachutes was on regular rotation in most CD players across the country. It hit the sweet spot of being both intellectually stimulating and instantly accessible, synthesising a broad range of fresh sounds (a little bit of OK Computer, a little bit of David Gray) and delivering something brand new to a country who’d almost had its fill of Oasis. Every song has a deep emotional core which you can lean into and convincing melodic hooks to match. There’s a nice balance of intimate, introspective ballads and fuller, rockier songs, but it never tips over into bombast.

Weirdly I got back into this album in Nov-Dec, it’s a solid 4 for me, I remember all the words of all the songs so I must have been chaining this as a young teen when first getting into music. It doesn’t quite warrant a 5 for me as none of it is truly special but it sticks well and I have a very soft spot for this and their 2nd album.

Had classics. It was fine

one of my favourites!!!

Prachtig. Toen Coldplay nog echt goede muziek maakte. Lekker emo

Här däremot, här finns bangers

Listened to this a long time ago and only remembered a few songs. I really enjoyed it. Favorite songs: Don't Panic, Sparks, Trouble

Who can deny “Yellow”? Not my favorite album of all time but definitely one I would listen to in a pensive mood. This morning’s commute, with the rain having broken only a few hours ago, was a good time.

Decent pop tunes, i love a bit of Coldplay in my playlists - just consistently listenable songs.

Still pretty good, but not as good as I once remember. Good enough for 4 stars, though

Lovely that.

Chris and Dakota breakup makes sparks better

No. 59 I really got hooked by this one. Really not typically into Coldplay but I definitely got swept up in the music and the tones and production along the way.

Lets face it, although they’ve become their generation’s U2- it’s cool to dismiss them as MOR pretentious dullards- if you just listen to this on it’s merits it is pretty good.

This was great. I'd never heard the whole album. The singles are obviously iconic, but I have a few new faves, like Trouble and Everything's not lost. What a banger of an album. It doesn't quite give me all the feels, but it's close.

yellow sparks 2000 alternative rock united kingdom

By far their best Album, imho. Catchy, melancholic songs, dig it. Fav: Shiver

Coldplay is Coldplay, easy listening with some classic tracks.

Soft rock. One of those albums that is the same song 10 times, but fortunately the song is good.

3/3. The first 3 has arrived. This one kinda snuck up on me, but I think on repeated listens this might actually be a no-skip album. Sounds totally modern, and the production is exceptional. You can really hear every detail, and the songwriting is there to match. This would be an easy recommendation for anyone to listen to.

There's a very good reason that Coldplay basically took over the world in the early to mid 2000s. Even though this album is derided by some as just diet Radiohead, I find that Coldplay bring their own touch to these songs, infusing them with a warmth that even the best Radiohead tunes lack (and I say this as a massive Radiohead fan, mind you). The songwriting was there, the atmosphere was there - what's not to love?

Judging this album using The Bends as a yardstick because the influence is undeniable. It's good, but it's not as good as The Bends. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by an album that I have mainly seen about in reviews of A Rush of Blood to the Head, which generally call it derivative and embarrassing. Really found myself appreciating it for what it is and enjoying it.

Bring back the old Coldplay straight from the go Coldplay

One of my biggest "guilty pleasures" because I am not a Coldplay fan at all but I will always defend this album. There's a certain beauty and wholesomeness to it that gets more and more lost the further you go through they're discography. I'm not gonna try and convince anybody that Coldplay is actually good, because they're not, but before you dismiss them entirely give this a listen. Favorite track: Don't Panic

I enjoyed it never understood their hate until they went pop lol

Fabulous album.

Radiohead laid out the groundwork for this sound, and as much as I viewed Coldplay as an attempt at ripping off what Radiohead had done, they weren't the only band at the time doing it, and they definitely did a better job than most on the first couple of albums to the point I actively listened to them alongside Radiohead. I honestly thought "Don't Panic" and "Trouble" were on the second album and was considering giving it 3 Stars based on that fact alone.

Very good, not much of a coldplay fan generally too but this album was easy listening, hit a certain vibe that will for sure be in my rotation

I owned and listened to this album when it was first released so this entire listings like a blast from the past I'm very comforted. Since then Coldplay has gone on to be a whole lot more polished, but there is something so raw about this first album. I feel like there's moments that hit as musical genius especially between the harmonies and the instrumentations and his voice just hitting those high mournful notes and then there are moments that it misses and doesn't feel nearly as genius and I think that's part of what makes it feel so raw. My favorite track is don't panic, the first track.

In my opinion, “Parachutes” is not Coldplay's best album (and therefore not really a must for this list), but at least it is their debut with a major label. Of course, Coldplay were very talented musicians from the start, but as I recall, the band's most innovative phase was after 2005. Back to Parachutes: “Don't Panic” and “Yellow” are reasonably strong songs—the rest are OK, but overall I find the album a little too quiet and monotonous. Still worth a listen, though.

I wanted to hate this album, but damn if it isn't good. Maybe not great, but it's moody and atmospheric, good headphone album. A lot of interesting sounds enveloping the stereo image. It's still very poppy and radio-friendly, but not offensively so.

Enjoyed.

I enjoyed this way more than I expected. For the year 2000, I guess I can associate them in a genre similar to Train at that time? Adult Contemporary I guess. Either way, I have never given Coldplay a fair shake before. A lot of sadness for a full album, but it's extremely well done. I'm a fan, and I'm really curious to see if these guys pop up again down the road. Yellow is such a good song DAMN.

136/1089 really solid record from coldplay which shouldn’t be a surprise but it is a little nevertheless based on some biases i guess faves: Don’t Panic, Spies, Yellow, High Speed, Everything’s Not Lost 75/100

I have avoided Coldplay all my life because I've been told they are like a worse Radiohead. While I see the comparison here I am consistently enjoying their songs. It's nothing groundbreaking, sure, but I'll happily return to this if I need some non-distracting background music.

Yellow is about piss

Lindo disco.

I wish this introspective and accesible Coldplay would come back.

Classic! Can’t remember the last time I listened all the way through but I’m a fan.

Yeah yeah I know we all make fun of Coldplay now but once upon a time they were actually pretty good. I’ve never listened to this album in full and was surprised how much I liked it!

Unreal album. The musical theory of some of the songs is unbelievable particularly yellow. Sparks is a personal favourite

Incredible voice. Album starts off quite creepy but interesting song into No Self Control which was a highlight for me. Great electronic sound, fantastic drums. Great album, really enjoyable.

Coldplay started out with three instant classic albums. The worst and first of these was 2000's 'Parachutes,' a mostly melancholy record with some huge singles/a song that would be well used in 'Wedding Crashers.' Just don't call me "Yellow" for liking this record so much. Aside: Why is this album named for a throwaway 46 second track? Top tracks: "Yellow," "Sparks," "Don't Panic," "Shiver"

has sparks and yellow wasn’t bad i listened to the whole thing can’t wait for next album

4 stars

Great listen. Knew a mix, and listened several times through.

El Coldplay que más me gusta. Un disco agradable de escuchar. Me gustan muchas de las letras.

El Coldplay que más me gusta. Un disco agradable de escuchar. Me gustan muchas de las letras.

Brilliant debut album. So many good songs.

8/10 Favourite: Sparks Least Favourite: Trouble

In my opinion their second best album after the Scientist. Modern version of U2 with some good songs

Love their sound. Great compositions, wistful songwriting, can rock hard as well as deliver on ballads.

A bit of nostalgia

oh no, I liked this. I know Coldplay is the ultimate in lame music but there are some really nice songs on here. I didn't know it, but this is their debut album and you can tell they started out as a regular band not some hyper produced pseudo edm/pop music group developed exclusively for selling singles to ClearChannel radio stations and spotify. "The old Coldplay was better" seems like an insane thing to say but maybe it's true. While I don't really rate Chris Martin's singing abilities his voice is perfectly fine for this kind of music, though you can tell he strains sometimes. The songwriting is a mix of what was once called "adult contemporary" and even a bit of post rock. There are four distinct instruments here, the classic drums, bass, guitar, and keys, and the distortion for the stringed instruments is very limited, if present at all. Songs like "Shiver" and "Trouble" are really well written and really nicely performed and produced. Even the very last chord change in "Yellow" is a thoughtful little shift that speaks volumes, even though that song was so wildly overplayed that I got sick of it years ago. Only in the last ten minutes did I get tired of listening to this. It's lame, it's overplayed, it's music for wine moms, I still like it. It's nice to hear simple love songs every now and then.

There are some really pretentious and snobby negative reviews for Coldplay albums on here 😂Coldplay’s first four albums are amazing. Parachutes isn’t as good as Rush of Blood to the Head, but gosh I still love it. And I love Chris Martin’s voice. This is such an easy album to listen to; it’s so chill and relaxed. Favorites are Don’t Panic, Yellow, and Sparks.

7.5, very solid

If you’re an astronomer high in the sky and you fall, you need a parachute.

A little soft, but admittedly some beautiful pieces.

Incredible album which stands in such stark distance from everything else of theirs I’ve heard.

As a Coldplay hater, I’m disappointed in myself for enjoying this album. It’s solid. Now I need to go take a shower to wash off the shame.

Gut, vor allem Yellow und Trouble. Der Rest eher eintönig.

I forgot how good their first two albums are before they really leaned into the pop side. This is pop too, but it has enough verve and feeling to keep it interesting. Kind of reminded me of Pablo Honey, and while Radiohead went on to be incredibly inventive and groundbreaking, Coldplay did the opposite. 3.5 up to 4.

Some bangers on here. Rest are a bit samey but you have to respect its peak pop. Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song- don’t panic Least fav - everything’s not lost

It definitely gets a bit repetitive, found that most of the songs that I hadn't already heard blended together a bit. But I had heard quite a few of them before and it's still a good mellow album and deserves its place on this list. Favourite song: Yellow Least: Parachutes

Its been forever since i listened to this album. I forgot how good Dont Panic and Trouble were. Not sure why both this and Rush of Blood are on the list, as both demonstrate their early years quite well. Still, solid album

Is this just early Radiohead with verses and choruses? Yes. Have Coldplay been living off the goodwill from this album for the past 25 years? Yes.

Groundbreaking, it sounds derivative now, yet it isn't. It's the one "they"imitated.

Love this

There's still a good argument to be put forward that this is Coldplay's best work. Less is more; four guys playing standard 'band' instruments for 3-4 minute simple indie rock songs. And it works. There are a load of strong, memorable tunes here. Yellow and Trouble are classics and they probably could've had four or five hits with how well this album was received at the time. The real jewel in the crown though, is the excellent Everything's Not Lost, foreshadowing the greater ambition and bombast to come on successor A Rush Of Blood To The Head. I do respect the fact Coldplay have gone on to even more ambitious things from there but I'm personally content to enjoy the early albums and not hold the shameless collabs and songs with emojis for titles but no actual substance against them too hard.

Hele albumet blir carry’a av 2 sanger

This is FANTASTIC! I love the guitar tones. I can't say I was much of a Coldplay fan before this, but wow was this album great. The vocals and instruments go together so well. Wow is the singer talented! This was great! Actual...4.5. Liked Songs: "Don't Panic" , "Shiver" , "Spies" , "Sparks" , "Yellow" , "Trouble" , "High Speed" , "Everything's Not Lost"

Good 4

Very nice 90's Indie. I enjoy later Coldplay records since they have more of a connection to me. But this is pleasant to listen to without sounding dated.

You can't always make catchy songs and good songs, I think Coldplay makes both. Not something I would usually listen to, but Sparks is an undeniably great song.

Pretty good

Very solid album with Yellow one of the best Coldplay songs right in the middle of the setlist. Quite enjoyable.

Oj vilken debut!

I think this maybe the first coldplay album i've listened to. I get the hype

The coziest of saps.

After 25 years, this is as much of a time capsule as a great album. It is a close to the 20th century - a look backwards before the post-9/11 jangle of the Strokes, the hip hop takeover and the ubiquity of EDM. It is a distinct billboard reminding us all of a more peaceful place, just before the world got more complicated.

Coldplay at their best. I’ve always had a weak spot for this. Much better than later offerings

Kids these days forget, but Coldplay actually used to be good

Easy listening with a few bangers. A great reminder this album exists!

If you can listen to this without any preconceived notions of who or what Coldplay is right now, today, then this album is awesome. Just enjoy it.

Gute Unterhaltung, easy listening

People love to hate on Coldplay, but this has held up amazingly well for a debut.

iconic

Great album! We all know yelllow from this album, but how many people have heard final track which comes with a hidden surprise. It contains some beautiful piano playing.

Classic album and what an amazing debut!!

Their good album. Loved it when it came out and still do now, only notable thing is the production is muddier than I remembered. Shame how they developed from here, their recent albums are just unlistenable to me.

Good old Coldplay. Top notch instrumentals & songwriting.

Great album needles to say, and very nostalgic. I like the story behind the album too where the band goes to the english countryside to just create a bunch of songs, not in some huge sterile studio with time constraints. 4/5

This is one of those albums that I listened to constantly growing up, but I've kind of forgotten about. Listening to it now for the first time in probably over a decade has me remembering why I listened to it. I used to always say that Jonny Buckland was one of my favorite guitar players. His ability to create a soundscape is impressive, but he'll never be on a list of best guitar players. "Coldplay" is kind of a bad word to "music enjoyers" and while I find that fair since a solid majority of their music is made-for-radio and formulaic, their early music was a different beast. Before Sky Full of Stars there was Spies and I'll choose to listen to Spies instead every time. Nothing crazy is done on this album. But something crazy doesn't need to be done on every album. It's a strong debut album for a band that would become so overplayed, no one wants to hear their name again. I just wish it were these songs that were overplayed rather than their later albums. (I know Yellow is played a lot but I like Yellow, dammit)

I think I really like that early 2000s guitar sound

This is a good album. Not my favorite Coldplay album, but it's certainly up there. "Yellow" and "Trouble" are probably my favorite songs, but there are a lot to like on this one.

When I saw the video to Yellow way back in 2000 I loved the song. I ran out and got the CD, but in retrospect I only listened to it a handful of times. It was nice, but overall it didn't blow me away as I'd hoped it would. It was just too mellow and no other songs really stood out. Their next album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was the one that did it for me and I listened to it non-stop. I'm assuming that album is on this list, and I'm actually kinda surprised that Parachutes is. They had a couple of other decent albums after that, but they then took such a pop turn that I find them unlistenable at this point. Listening today I found the record to be solid, and it made for a pleasant drive to work, but that's about it. There is nothing bad about it, but only a couple of songs stand out from the pack IMO. I am wavering between a 3 and 4 on this one.

Hard not to like this, very well done and haunting in places.

A good album, I liked Don't Panic, Sparks, Trouble and Yellow the most.

I'd forgotten how much I loved Coldplay when this album first dropped. I don't know if it's just nostalgia or if it truly did hold up, but I still love this album. It feels like sinking into a warm bath. Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow, Trouble, Everything's Not Lost all added to Liked Songs.

Maybe it's the nostalgia, maybe it's actually good. This is the Coldplay I like, and it's a shame their recent stuff has been so commercial. 4/5

Still sounds good been a few years since I listened to it

I bought this album when it came out, and before it became fashionable to hate Coldplay. Actually, most people didn't know the band. I still think this is album full of almost perfect pop songs, and better than their later stuff. I rarely deliberately listen to Coldplay now, fatigue has kicked in a bit, but this is an absolutely fine album that has aged well.

The era when Coldplay was a unique blend of pop, indie, and rock with a melancholic tone. Before they become a pop bland faceless group.

Already listened to this... this time i watched videos of the song... really nicely shot, it has that nostalgic touch missing in today's mvs

Listened May 2025. I enjoy the original incarnation of Coldplay where they take the angsty piano-based alt rock of Radiohead but smooth it down into mainstream, stadium-filling pop. Strong songwriting.

Pretty good amazing production nice vocals but some songs were great but nothing insane.

I've never had a strong opinion one way or the other regarding Coldplay, although I've definitely heard about all the hate they get. For a debut album, this is solid. I enjoyed this one.

Great album

Old Coldplay is so much better than new Coldplay

after all these trash albums this is like a breath of fresh air jesus. i love coldplay they’re a little on the simple side but it’s just vibey and hits for me. only didn’t like high speed, and the last song bc it was so long. solid

Excellent. That is all. Chris Martin's voice is fabulous. Listened before? Y Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Shiver, Don't Panic, Yellow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved it. Saved multiple tracks

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Coldplay right after U2 is not my idea of a party, but this was actually quite a nice-sounding album. I'm really not much for the pale, wistful loverboy genre, yet I felt like I had tousled hair, a Henley shirt, and great teeth the whole time this was going. Pretty-sounding production, well-written tunes. Impressive debut. I can see how they went on to kick the world's ass, become one of the biggest bands of their generation, and foil the best laid plans of ultrawealthy adulterers.

Well written songs, good length, very engaging. The opening track is fantastic. “Shiver”. It sets the tone. “Shiver” keeps it going. The only dud track is “We Never Change”; it’s a mood killer. Then the album closes with one of Coldplay’s best tracks. Quick redemption. Easily one of the better albums this experience has provided recently.

Hey, an actually good album, though the back half is slow and low energy. Still a 4 for the singles that have stuck around.

What a great album! BEST Coldplay album!

This is a good album. It’s not great, but it’s good. Doesn’t deserve the hate. Sure, later albums do, but this doesn’t.

The Coldplay of today may have gone down hill quite drastically compared to the rather quite excellent album that is 'Parachutes'.

Not my favourite band and also better live. Still quality!

Nice easy listening mellow album

For the love of all music, just SKIP OVERPLAYED YELLOW and enjoy the rest of the album.

Coldplay

I absolutely enjoyed listening to this, soft but memorizable instrumentals and fitting vocals. Although I liked all songs, some were (for me) not as great as others so thats why Im not giving this album a 5. Otherwise a close one! Favorite songs: Sparks, Trouble & Everything’s not Lost

This is probably the only Coldplay album that I like. Otherwise I cannot be bothered to listen to them. I wonder if part of the reason why I like this album is because I listened to it as a teen. Makes me nostalgic for lost time. Best listened to while looking at a photo album.

Oh yeah, Coldplay used to not suck! This is honestly just some nice pop music that doesn't try too hard. Still enormously influential. I couldn't ever see myself giving it a 1 or a 5, but rounding up for nostalgia.

Some really excellent songs here. Sparks gets me every time.

Great album. Excellent singing and lyrics. Yellow is one of the best out there. The album does feel like there could be some more going on, but that also allows the vocals to take the forefront. 7.75/10 (3.875/5)

lucid lead guitars, flangers?, grunge-esque sound, yellow always a banger. Remember performing this back in college. Interesting to see the evolution of their sound coming from this album. Martin is relatively safe vocal wise and doesn't really stretch his vocals like he does in later albums with some notes of 90s restraint that identified this generation of music. Piano is more rhythmic than melodic which I suppose is a coldplay staple. I see them playing with the swell of their arrangements here where they are later perfected in subsequent albums. last song kinda slaps.

Honestly excellent. Idk why they made this and proceeded to make evil music for around 15 years.

Very good, can't go wrong with Coldplay

Late rating cuz I didn't have time to listen to it yet. 4.3/5 The songs on this album remind me very much of some of Pink Floyd's best works. Very mellow and atmospheric, superb tone and vibe. I didn't know Coldplay are #9 on the most played artists on all of Spotify at the time of this review. Honestly a bit stunned about it cuz I thought that their music wasn't as liked. Guess I was wrong.

Almost 20 years ago today, I knew one Coldplay song (Yellow), but from an a cappella cover, when some friends had an extra ticket to a show and invited me along. Chris Martin fucked up the words to one of the songs (I think Clocks or The Scientist) and made them start over from the beginning so we'd get our money's worth. I became an instant fan. I think I still have this CD, even though I don't actually have a CD player. Listened before? Y Saved to library? Y Favorite track(s): Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow, Trouble, Everything's Not Lost ⭐⭐⭐⭐: Really liked it. Saved a bunch of tracks.

Aside from Yellow, I've never heard a single one of these songs but it reminds me of my childhood, the general vibe of music that I grew up around. Shiver stood out as a relistenable track. Listened to this one whole way through on the drive to work, pleasantly surprised.

1. britpop never sucks for me. post britpop too. 2. "sucking pop rock bands" generally have a really great debut album. 3. i mean my favourite colour isnt yellow but you know what i mean. one time, two time. spin the desktop globe until we exit upside down. cheesy pop rock has been a part of my DNA since 10. continuing it into middle school until im now a junior. coldplay was somehow just like the old kanye and the old u2. their earlieast works are the best works. i still remembered being alone as a sophomore and joining in music class getting to group up with classmates and playing "yellow" like literally thats the last thing that mattered. playing in a band is literally the best thing that happened like what we are covering is coldplay, guys, its literally coldplay. i did hope one day i can grow wings and anything else. making music is like a chemical reaction it creates awe like when you look at the stars and see it shining for you. guess its just a bias but i really like it. 4/5

I like a lot this album. It is well produced, the songs are good, some of the best of band are there (Trouble, Sparks, Yellow, Don't Panic). The only thing that it doesn't make 5/5 is the lyrics. Chris Martin is not the best lyricist, but that's OK.

Pleasant

Heerlijk rustig album.

This album almost suffered from its own success. It was everywhere when it came out, with radio saturation making sure everyone knew the songs, and soon enough it became "cool" to hate Coldplay. But strip away the backlash, and what’s left is a strong debut by a group of genuinely talented musicians. Parachutes might not be bursting with cultural relevance, but it was exactly the kind of record people needed at the time - something earnest, melodic, and quietly optimistic. As a debut, it’s damn impressive. Critics often brushed it aside as being “too bright and cheerful,” and honestly, when it came out I didn’t want to hear that either. Revisiting it years later though, it’s clear just how capable Coldplay were right from the start, and how well these songs still hold up.

Brilliant

I loved this album when it first came out, even back in my Nu-Metal–obsessed days which says a lot! Nestled on my CD rack between Follow the Leader and Significant Other, it still holds up brilliantly.

Bonkers that Coldplay used to make such good music, instead of pumping out shite stadium singalongs and uncovering CEO's doing the dirty. I audibly sighed when I seen today's album and I'm a big enough man to admit I was wrong. Lovely album, I forgot how good Shiver was, High Speed is also a bop. Chris Martin; If you're reading this (and I know you are) please have a conscious uncoupling from doodling on yerself whilst writing life-affirming stadium anthem bullshit and go back to this.

Great hits. Liked the vibe and pacing of the album.

Yellow

One of those bands where it has become really boring to build your personality around stating that they suck. When actually their first 4/5 albums were really solid. This wasn't their peak but is a really strong debut that hinted at what they would do on the next album which is a 5. Some wonderful basslines on this album.

Parachutes doesn't break the mold, but instead approaches near perfection for an enjoyable and easy listen; a smooth indie rock experience that continues to worm its way into charts from sound bites on tiktok. The melodramatic vocals and instrumentals give a greater gravity to this record than the simple pop rock atmosphere would indicate, and so it's easy to misconstrue the record as something grander than it is, but it does remain a light, enjoyable experience - the McDonald's of indie rock

Random thoughts: * Shiver has some definite echoes of Jeff Buckley. I was not expecting that! * Not sure if it is due to exposure or just the style but several songs feel very timeless. Sparks falls into this category. It sounds like a song that has existed forever. Trouble too! * Obviously, I remember when "Yellow" came out but I don't really remember the rest of the album. This is way more indie and singer-song-writer-y than Coldplay's later offerings. * I've always liked Coldplay overall but have never went to see them live. I wouldn't call myself a fan. This album should have been in my repertoire before now as this is a very good album. This is way more up my alley than some of the other more pop-oriented albums.

I love how personal this album feels. The vulnerability on each song and its purposeful storytelling throughout the tracks. Perspective really feels like a big part of this project and im here for it. Solid album and very many songs I will be hearing again and in the near future.

Coldplay get a lot of hate, but i really enjoyed this album

I'm not keen on his voice, unfortunately. I dismissed this album at the time, having had it gifted to me. I wish I liked his voice more because this album is actually great for a chilled out evening. Really good tracks, consistent and well-produced. Love the subtle psychedelic guitar. Quite nice to listen through again, 25 years on, with a more open attitude to music than my grumpy 13-year-old self. The reviews I've scanned here remind me of her 😆

8.5/10 I don't trust anyone who actively hates Coldplay. I get if you don't care for them, but hating them? I'm just gonna assume you're desperately trying to be cool. No integrity. Anyway, the album is very pretty. Well produced. Nice soundscapes. Especially love the guitar sound. Nearly every song is catchy in a way, although I think Coldplay's songwriting improved with their second album. Highlights: Don't Panic Spies Trouble Everything's Not Lost We Never Change

I always thought Coldplay was meh. Feeling as though they’re just another pop group from the 2000s and they didn’t have anything to offer. But this album kind of changed my perspective. The whole sound on this album is absolutely amazing and the songs sound just so great. I stand corrected on who I was before listening to this. Great album and would absolutely listen to this again! Favorite Tracks: Don’t Panic, Sparks, Yellow, Trouble Rating: 4.5/5

My third favorite Coldplay album after Rush of Blood and Viva La Vida both of which I have at five stars. So there are quite a few songs on here that keep this at a 4.5, there are a few tracks that keep it from a fiver for me. 9.67 ★★★★½

A very good album, but not Coldplay's best. 4.5 stars

I don't think it's the best (or even second best) Coldplay album, but it is a good debut with some great highs, including "Don't Panic". "Yellow", and "Trouble". It does run out of steam a bit after "Trouble", and if I had a minor complaint, it's that it gets a bit samey. I think A Rush of Blood to the Head has more sonic variance. 4 stars.

A personal favorite

Really enjoyed going back to this. The Radiohead influence has never been more obvious, but there’s some cracking tunes on this one. Interesting to hear this now knowing just how incredibly huge they’d get, and having to admit to myself that they had the stuff from the very start.

This is a really good album. Melancholy, with cool guitar parts and good vocal melodies. So many good songs on the album.

I don't understand the hate for Coldplay cuz if Billie Eilish were singing the songs off this album, y'all would be going crazy. This is a solid debut for a band that would become one of the biggest bands of the 21st century. We can all agree that newer Coldplay can't hold a candle to their earlier stuff, you can say that for a lot of artists, but c'mon. You can point out the "Radiohead but bland" argument and I can get it, but in all honesty this is a solid debut album from a good band and I feel a lot of people are scared to say that there was once a time that Coldplay was an absolutely great band.

Good late 80s hip-hop record tho a bit long

I love Cosplay! It's not my favorite album of theirs though, I just especially like Sparks and Yellow.

Listened to this on my vacation in France while driving. Very nice. But sometimes he just sings a bit to high for me.

I have "Sparks" and "Trouble" on repeat <3

Is this a 3-star album or a 4-star album? I'm so torn. It's obviously a 3½ star album, but since that's not allowed, do I round up or down? Let's break it down. 1. This is almost wholesale ripping off Bends-era Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, The Verve, and a host of other bands. 2. On the other hand, they do a pretty good impression, and Chris Martin is vulnerable enough and the guitars shimmer enough that it all stands on its own just fine. 3. Their gift for crafting earworms is impressive, and will remain so on all their subsequent albums, even as they start mostly just imitating themselves. 4. I spent *so* many nights in the fall of 2000 with this album on in the background. Every dorm room I landed in for like four months had it in heavy rotation. That wasn't a bad thing at all. It's a cozy album and has a consistent vibe. 5. I have almost all of these songs on the playlist I shuffle most frequently ("My Happy Place",) and I very rarely skip them when they come up. 6. As a result of 4 & 5, I have listened to this album hundreds of times, way more than the three albums I currently have at 5 stars on my summary page (46 albums in; it's still early days.) Screw it, 4 stars.

It’s a real bummer the direction coldplay went. They just can’t seem to create the magic of their first few albums. And I think it has to do with exactly that, they’re TRYING to make a magical experience. It’s paradoxical in a way. But on Parachutes, it seems effortless, the sentimentality is treated as a foundation for the music, not as a deliberate product of it. They’re not aiming to do anything impressive here, the songwriting is very simple, but it’s so tasteful that it only makes sense it’s as timeless as it is. Sparks into yellow…. wow. Such a sweet album, but damn I really hate what this band turned into

As much as I do try to be open minded with every album, when this generated I was fully expecting to hate this one. Surprisingly I enjoyed it, it’s actually a really good album. The only thing stopping it from getting all five stars is I didn’t like the song We Never Change. I found it very dull. Top Track - Don’t Panic

it had some really good songs but it was a little inconsistent

Coldplay's debut is still rather reserved sounding compared to the increasingly bombastic sound of what was to follow in their discography. I quite like it, it's got a lot of beautiful songs that to me are not overplayed yet. However, sonically many songs are not that different from one another, so there was still room for improvement.

Coldplay takes a lot of shit, but this album holds up well. Side note: I distinctly remember listening to this album while driving in high school. I had the portable CD player plugged into the cassette deck in my truck and maybe 10 or 15 CDs available at a time (whatever I could shove into the CD holder velcroed to the visor). I had to take this album out of rotation because it almost put me to sleep a couple times. It's beautiful music, but maybe not the best for driving. I also maybe (definitely) didn't get enough sleep in high school. Anyway, I almost never listen to Coldplay anymore so I was glad to have the excuse to revisit this one. Given how stingy I am with 5's on here I can't quite get there with this album, but it's close. 4.3

Honestly Coldplay you impressed me here ngl I was not thrilled but then it turns out you've got some good ones

I don't know why Coldplay get all the hate. Yeah, they're a bit watery but this is a good album.

This is one of those albums I grew up listening to. I still remember all the notes and lyrics. I was really into Coldplay as a teenager and bought each of their first four albums. After Viva la Vida I stopped. Never really gave much thought to why. My tastes became heavier in general and Coldplay didn't feel particularly interesting anymore. Parachutes brings back a lot of teenage memories. Don't Panic was one of the first songs I learnt on the guitar and it's one of the few songs I still remember how to play all the way through. Shiver was one of my favourite songs, speaking to my teenage angst about girls I liked. Mostly it's a slow and chilled out album and if I came to it fresh today I might dismiss it as lacking in energy but in the end it was pleasant to hum along to familiar tunes and this album at least holds up well I think.

I’m a fan of Coldplay, so would listen to it again

In a time when perhaps the only reason Coldplay is in the cultural zeitgeist is because of a CEO and his Head of HR mistress caught on kiss kam, it’s refreshing to come back to time when it made sense to form an obsession over this band!

What the heck happened to Coldplay. Great album.

Amazing debut, almost a 5 but knowing that they're next 3 albums are all better I'll give it a 4

A solid album from start to finish. These guys deserve the credit and recognition they get.

Very nostalgic for me, but not a 1001 material.

houghts: oh yes, time for some nostalgia, wistfulness, and melancholy. i miss old, heartfelt coldplay. songs: “sparks”, “trouble”, “we never change” rating: 7.5/10

Love this album. Some really great songs on this one!

• 4/5 • Iconic post-Britpop and a phenomenal debut album • Several playlist-worthy singles and Yellow is still a gem after hearing it a billion times • Only real criticism is that the pace of the songs Is so uniformly slow that grows monotonous by the end - the whole is a bit less than the sum of the parts. Still wonderful though.

I do like Coldplay but haven’t heard the full album before. Very good, very chill album. No big rockers but good end to end

Well I just think they're neat!

I think people hate on Coldplay because it’s cool to hate them. This came out when I was in high school, but I never listened to anything but Yellow. I found this album super chill and easy to listen to. It’s like Radiohead, but you can actually understand the singer.

Tidleg coldplay æ noko for seg sjølv, vakkert

I know it! I think this is the first album I've already listened to (had a Sigur Ros earlier but it was one I hadn't got). Obviously I enjoyed it, plus nostalgia value, possibly one of the first albums I ever listened to/owned. I could sing along with almost all of it.

Me surpreendeu, só conhecia as músicas do Coldplay famosas nos anos 2010

I don't think that Coldplay deserves all of the hate that it gets. They threw some really unique Pop/Rock onto the table at a time when mainstream music was going through a flux. Sparks is one of my favorite songs of all time so I may be a bit biased, but I do like this album a lot and certainly think that it should be on this list. 7/10

They used to have so much potential. The album is actually good but impossible to decontextualise, so it's very difficult to judge it by its own merits.

pleasantly with how much i enjoyed the non-commercial songs of this album, especially high speed. feel like i haven't listened to much coldplay outside of the 'hits', so this was great to check out. way different appreciation for coldplay (and early coldplay at that) after listening to this.

Mostly sad

What a polarising act. This is the only Coldplay album ( before starting this) I had ever heard and always thought it was ok, not world changing and not unlistenable either. Every single etc. I heard subsequently I have to admit didn’t make me want to listen further and I haven’t heard this until today since the time it came out but this is ok. Its descent Melodies, they can write a good song structure. I can kind of see why people don’t like Martin, his vocals and persona but let’s get real he’s no serial bastard and generally well meaning if possibly annoying. On hearing again today, I am gonna fall into this is a god record camp, yeah it’s that middle class diner party type of thing but so what, 4 Star

Despite the deserved hate this is a pretty good album. Consistent themes, great instrumentals and vocals. Some songs were ehhhh but others felt like Jeff Buckley. 7.5/10

Already heard!

wow, i never thought i’d enjoy smth from coldplay. enjoyed it, will definitely relisten

Took me back to my high school Coldplay phase

A 2000's classic. Rich, beautiful and haunting; a testament to good music which holds up 25 years later. I just love Coldplay's earlier output. I forgot how great a song Shiver was, I hadn't heard that in a long time.

Decent album.

An easy listening collection of songs that has great melodies and lyrics. Not super unique in anyway but takes the best parts of several genres to put together a great album.

Wonderful mellow vibe and voice

Good first showing for Coldplay, it's little wonder they lasted for decades.

This is a really good album. I’ve always loved Yellow and Everything’s Not Lost. I haven’t listened to the whole album in 20 years so this was a nice listen. Probably not going into rotation at all, but a good little occasional reminiscing album.

A pretty incredible intimate debut album full of ache and emotional depth … I remember how beautifully captivating Chris Martin’s voice was when this first hit.

I really like Coldplay’s first few albums.

Mellow, but grand pop-rock as always. Good album, but not their best.

Maybe nostalgia won, but I enjoyed the slow croony vibes here.

Annoyingly ok

Really enjoyed this 8/10

apart from yellow and sparks, i've never listened to the rest of this album and i absolutely adored it

wow they didn't suck

There's a lot of harsh criticism you can throw at Coldplay. They're the poor man's Radiohead. They're dad rock for a new generation. It's easy to hate them. On the other hand, "Parachutes" was a wildly successful debut album and it's simply because it's well made. There's a humility of a band that just starring off but who were soon destined to become stadium filling super stars. I saw Coldplay live towards the end of their tour for this album. They were already playing packed venues and introducing faster paced songs from what would become their second album. My ex and I debated between seeing Coldplay or Depeche Mode. She won and even though I still think Depeche Mode would have been the better show, Coldplay still impressed me, even if I hate to admit it. Hate them all you want, "Parachutes" is still an incredibly accomplished album.

I liked like half of them. I can see both sides to the argument about Coldplay but don't feel strong enough either way to pick a side. Rating: 3.7

7.5/10. A really good chill album with fall vibes.

yellow

Parachutes is the debut album from British band Coldplay, which was an international commercial success. Driven by the success of a few hit singles, including "Yellow" and "Don't Panic" - the album made the band into international stars. The album, and the band, have found somewhat constrained critical success, as the band sounds quite a bit like their contemporaries, with a sound like early Radiohead, or a "soft-rock U2."

Coldplay cannot possibly deserve half the hate they get considering how good this album is. It's 10.5 tracks of perfectly distilled radio-ready pop rock. Catchy & surprising production with effective lyrics; pretty without making you want to retch. If it's guilty of anything, it's success - this sound ended up being replicated and refined beyond all charm through the 00s and early 10s both by Coldplay themselves and many shit bands imitating them. But the earnest tastefulness of this album survives all that. 4*

I desperately want to shit all over this album, but it’s just not called for. The sound here is so beautifully realised for a debut. It’s remarkable. We’ve all heard Yellow a million times, but I really enjoyed listening to it in context. The electric guitar keeping the beat does this interesting discordant thing in the verses that I never actually noticed. It’d sound awful by itself, but wrapped up in the production it’s just glorious. Such an easy, easy listen. It’s a shame about…you know… *gestures generally at everything Coldplay did after 2010* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

7.5 / 10 Nice album, can see it's appeal and how the sound has been influential-ish in soft-rock. A tad too unidimensional / repetitive for me though.

Early Coldplay is great. Yellow has been in my rotation for years. Trouble and Spies are favorites too. It's all good mellow pop/rock. 4.5, rounded down to 4.

I had my reservations on Coldplay and never really thought much about them before listening to the album. Their music is actually worth the hype, and after listening to Parachutes it's safe to say I'm no longer a hater.

Pretty solid

This is the best Coldplay album, you won't change my mind.

The Good: If the plane shows issues, we can jump out of it! The Bad: Who the hell wants to jump out of an airplane? The Ugly: Parachutes that don’t open… Wow, didn’t know there was so much hate towards a single band who’ve done nothing more but be successful… Myself, I was not on the Coldplay bandwagon, so to speak, when they emerged in the 2000… but, like many, I found their hit songs easy to hum-along-to. I recall thinking that this band was the “lite” version of Radiohead… call me crazy. 3 1/2* as this album isn’t bad at all…

Not as polished as AROBTTH but still a solid 4

Well made, yellow totally carries the album but the rest of them are ok as well

People who hate on Coldplay hate as if they have nothing better to do. This isn't the greatest album on earth, but hating something just because it's popular doesn't make you cool. This is a solid debut album. I like Coldplay - always have, always will. Suck it.

I like parts of this but it's a little too earnest.

Oh here we go... an album that came out at a time in my life when I was too cool to listen to this type of music. Glad I don't have those hangups anymore because "trouble" is a mood.

Such a beautiful classic, takes you through feeling sad, relaxed carefree and nostalgic. Enjoyed whilst revising pure but really need to be in a field in the evening sun and cold white wine despite the fact I'm not really into white, just would pair good with this album. Reminds me of my mam.

Current Coldplay is Imagine Dragons level of awful. "Parachutes" Coldplay was fantastic.

Man, late 90s to early 2000s really was the heyday of sad boy mellow guitar cry bands like Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, and apparently early Coldplay. I get that people (a loud minority) dislike the mainstream Pop route they are going into nowadays, but I found Parachutes different and actually really enjoyable. Admittedly, you have to be in the right mood for it.

104/1089 - Very similar to Radiohead's "The Bends" but mellower and with a worse-sounding accent. That being said, "The Bends" is one of my favorite albums so I enjoyed this one too.

What a debut album! This album is quintessential Coldplay with some of their best hits and I highly enjoyed it. I don’t think I’d ever listened to this album in full but I definitely would in the future and recommend this album to others!

I know this album gets criticized for being bland, inoffensive music, but it’s honestly so well executed there’s really no denying that it’s an excellent album.

Very nostalgic from high-school years. Iconic of the aughts. Not my favorite style overall but I’ll never say no to a listen. Beautiful floating harmony and a wonderful and iconic use of falsetto.

Very good start from Coldplay. Preparing "A rush" which I feel i s a bit better produced. Anyway I had always listened to this albums without distinction. Very nice for a Monday morning.

They may have fallen into the trap of being overplayed, but Coldplay can make some pretty music. Sad songs with hopeful lyrics hook me every time.

Good stuff, my style, hard to give a 5 though. 4/5

Was a little bit depressing but i liked it

Their second record is one of my alltime favourites. This one is good but not as good as „A Rush Of Blood To The Head“. But the guitars here are nosier than I expected it. That’s a plus.

Sounds like that early 2000s

As a metal head scoring this ao highly after Anthrax seems wrong. Biased as I've heard it a lot but second only to AROBTTGH.

First half is unbelievable, second half tapers off a bit. Slagging off Coldplay doesn’t make you cool. If Don’t Panic was a recently unearthed Elliott Smith B-side everyone would lose their heads over it.

Never realized how much Chris Martin sounds like (or aspired to sound like) Jeff Buckley. There are some really superb songs here.

I always found it interesting that the band apparently hate this album. I mean, yes, lyrically pretty basic, but their most recent material is far more rudimentary in lyrical terms than this and overloaded with synthetic party-pleasing Calvin Harris vibes. Some of the tracks on this are actually quite beautiful. It's not A Rush of Blood to the Head, but that's in a league of it's own (in Coldplay terms) Oh, and this album is one of my album anniversaries this coming half term in school. 25 years old. What??

Classic, loved coming back to this album

I'm a little biased cuz I grew up loving coldplay....

so classic its silly they really are good sleep music or maybe I am just tired

I mean, it's a classic, no matter how much of a marketing company Coldplay has become.

Bias for Yellow!!

I felt I should have been drinking a glass of red wine while making dinner on a Saturday night while listening. It was all mellow.

Bring on the mems! ✅✅✅✅ Don’t Panic ✅✅✅✅ Sparks ✅✅✅✅ Yellow Vibes to match the title: I am thoroughly adrift and also.somehow cocooned, in simple chords and committed falsetto.

Modern-day Coldplay may be new age pop music gone terribly bad (though to be fair, I haven't really listened to modern-day Coldplay...), but this album was really good and still felt current: brooding, emotional, and a hint of angst simmering beneath the surface. Would go back!

Heavy nostalgia, but Yellow still slaps. Definitely Coldplay’s best album.

Yellow invokes memories of summer in cornwall in 2001, all in-all a very unoffensive album. I know Coldplay isn't everyones cup of tea, but their earlier music is a part of my childhood. Giving it 4/5 but out of 10 I'd probably give it a 7.

Peak 00s pop
