Reviews (page 4 of 14)
Love this album still to this day, might be a big influence due to nostalgia of it being on repeat growing up. But the album has remained timeless for me personally. Prefer this debut and the older Coldplay records up till about Viva La Vida then I kind of fell out of listening to their newer stuff. Great intro and brilliant tracklist all throughout.
You're not gonna like this take: this is about as good of an early 2000s pop rock/post-britpop album as The Bends. The main reason is that Chris Martin is simple enough to make something as saccharine and unpretentious as Yellow actually work. Thom Yorke is emotional but he has to be up his own ass a little to find something profound. Parachutes just kind of speaks for itself. It's easy to be nostalgic about. 9/10
Great album Y2K! Refreshing new sound!
Favourite tracks: shiver; spies; don't panic; sparks; yellow; trouble; high speed
Great album.
Amazing.
amazing
I always felt their debut was the most unique and consistent. It has a warm, melancholic vibe with an easily recognizable voice and instrumental style that invokes the nostalgia of midwest emo, especially in that twangly guitar and sudden shifts between minimalist / spacey and lush in most tracks. So many standout tracks, the album only declines in the last few tracks. But really, the only one I wasn't a fan of was the piano-ballad "Everything's Not Lost", but I still really enjoyed the guitar solo.
Finally something I’ve listened to on repeat in the past. This album is great. Such good feels. Sparks, shiver, of course yellow! Great album from start to finish
So great to reconnect with this record! It's a beauty! From song to song, it's really hard to imagine that this is their first record. Not a bad song on the album.
Ignoring what came after.
Gewoon prachtig.
Time Machine to the 90’s
Classic
Reminds me of good times.
So many make fun of Coldplay now because they have become a bit of a parody of themselves at times. This is a great debut album though and it does tend to bring whiny piano rock to the forefront of radio. The first six songs on this album are classics and the album deserves to be on this list.
This is one of the first albums that I remember loving entirely, so it has a special place in my heart. I truly miss _this_ Coldplay. The songs are well crafted, the lyrics are meaningful... it's just a solid album from beginning to end.
meh. I could make a better album in my sleep. that's about the only way.
Loved every song
Best Coldplay album. Spot on. Loved it
A great album!
Dont care what people say, if you hate coldplay for their latest albums thats absolutely fine but there is a reason they got famous to begin with
One of my favs
1. Don't Panic: beautiful track, guitar mixed with the piano sounds great. 8/10 2. Shiver: absolute banger of a track, guitar goes hard. 9.5/10 3. Spies: pretty alright song, not particularly interesting 7/10 4. Sparks: great song, possibly my favorite on this album 10/10 5. Yellow: all-time classic, great song, chris vocals are really good on this one. 8.5/10 6. Trouble: second favorite, every part of this song has such strong points. great piano opening and great ending encapsulating a hauntingly good chorus. 10/10 7. Parachutes: nice little interlude, nothing much to be said about this. 7/10 8. High Speed: nice song, not too special but it does have a very good vibe to it. 7.5/10. 9. We Never Change: love this song, lovely melody and vocals. 9/10. 10. Everything's Not Lost: great song as well very strong points. 8.5/10 Hidden track. Life Is For Living: actual nice hidden track, good end to the album. 8/10
Sonntag 5. März Classic.
SO nostalgic, makes me feel like I'm in my childhood bedroom again. Love.
Amazing. 2nd best Coldplay album
Ooof, this gets you in the feels.
Excelent Coldplay Album
Strongest five I can give. Every song on this album is fantastic. Coldplay had such a fantastic style. I still listen to this album regularly. If you all dont give it a five I will judge you. Can't wait to see the 3 star meh in group ratings after I submit this.
Bueno señores, habemos DISCAZO
Masterpiece
An album released the year I turned 18, by a bunch of college boys from the same country (sort of) - how could I not like it! I loved it at the time and, listening purely on its own merits, I loved it again now. Shiver (their breakthrough track) was an instant classic, and it turns out I remember pretty much every word of the whole album. Wonderful, it's just a shame they moved away into dance music and Hollywood marriages!
An early 2000s classic
Love how mellow and groovy it is
I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed when I saw this one pop up. But I forgot how good this album actually is,I enjoyed almost all of it. The last three tracks are a bit meh, but everything up until then is great! Really well written and performed. Where did it all go wrong for Coldplay? They really did have some great albums in the 2000s.9/10
this album is so good. first full listen and it’s very consistent and has great production. the singers voice is nice.
Jájá
Still great.
No puedo ser objetiva. Me hace bien 😌
Way better the previous Coldplay album we had, does this appeal to my white boy indie loving sensibilities, ye. Do I mind? No. Loved the guitar tone and the lyrics weren’t as prominent so I didn’t have to dislike them
I always love Coldplay
I love Coldplay.
It's like a musical weighted blanket.
Good chill album. Would listen again
Nice h
10/10 a true classic. cant believe i don’t listen to this record more often. its so refreshing to go back and listen to a band that sounds like a band… ie live instruments.
Track I liked so far: Sparks, Yellow (of course)
Lightning in a bottle
a classic album I come back to all the time hard to say if this or rush of blood is better
Simply wonderful. So evocative of late teenage years... I remember first hearing Trouble on the radio and thinking it was Oasis. Given what Coldplay have become I think it is easy to forget that they were once a straightforward indie band, and a bloody good one at that. Trouble, Don't Panic, High Speed, Everything's Not Lost, Yellow... there's so much good stuff on here. Screw the haters
Classic, a great first album by them. All the tracks work well together, with Shiver, Spies, and Everything’s Not Lost personal favourites.
I remember buying this CD when it came out. It was a punt for me at the time. The joy of the 1001 albums is that we get away from the modern fashion of listening to individual songs on playlists. Going back to listening to an album as the artist intended. Enjoying the juxtaposition of one track to the next, the journey they take you on. I loved this album when it first came out. It’s well crafted, starts strong and ends well. Listening to this album transported me back to a memorable time in my life and that in itself was a joy. I understand the ire that Chris Martin conjures up. I’m ignoring all that. It’s easy to forget that he became popular because the music was good. Fabulous debut. Solid 5 stars here
Increíble!!!
Before I start people can say that Coldplay are generic and shit but that’s really in their late albums and are just a typical victim of late album syndrome, this album though is a banger… Don’t panic is a solid album opener I like how ( for Coldplay’s standards) the song gradually increases in heaviness throughout, it’s really short compared to what I remember still good though. Actually shiver might just be one of the heaviest Coldplay rockers and it’s really good I especially love the pre chorus/ chorus! Spies is very slow it’s a nice mid side one break it’s great and shows what talents Coldplay used to have. Sparks is another acoustic track it’s good ( not as good as spies though). Yellow is a banger ( not the best song of the 2000’s) but still an amazing song to have as a breakthrough hit! Trouble is great too that piano is near iconic! The album’s title track is an interlude ( what a waste). Higher speed sounds cool enough to not be filler but the verse isn’t even great but it just loops over the chorus is okay though. The penultimate track we never change is a great song except for the line “ live my life an have friends around” rubbish lyricism still okay though. Everything’s not lost is the saving grace for this album amazing closer ( the hidden track is good too). This album is front loaded ( not as much as prefab sprout or the killers ( both of which have either got 5’s or getting 5’s)). But for this album it’s harder for that score because of how much worse that side two is. Like I wanted to give it a 5 just to show that Coldplay are a good band but I can’t. Actually fuck it I gave elbow a 5.
Very nice I never thought I'd like Coldplay
"Don't Panic" was on the Garden State Soundtrack and gives me literal chills every time I hear it. There are so many hauntingly gorgeous songs here, I gotta give it that 5 piece.
Good album
god dammit why does Coldplay need to keep surprising me, fuck, this is actually good just like a rush of blood, I didn’t think I would like this but I am actually very happy and surprised - this is a 9/10 for me I still stick by my belief that every other coldplay album is lame, my mind was changed on their first two so I listened to their third, X&Y, it was just so boring like maybe i’m crazy but the difference between A Rush of Blood and X&Y is like night and day (except reverse) they started out so good and in that third album, they just sound like a hollow remake of themselves, the songs all sound the same, the drop/hook is always predictable and boring, I swear there’s just something missing from it who knows, maybe if I come across another coldplay album on this site, I will be proved wrong but right now I still think only their first two are good
listened to again what an AMAZING record
What a great album. This is before Coldplay went super pop. They are very relaxing songs. Could see me playing them soaking up the sun in summer.
Hadn’t listened to this album in years and it did not disappoint! It makes you remember that Coldplay was actually good at one point.
Already listened to it
What wrong with a bit of nostalgia for this nineties classic? 8./10, but 5/5
The best Coldplay album, never really reached these heights again, and got really bad after 3rd/4th. Yellow and Sparks are beautiful songs
é o primeiro álbum do coldplay né pai
you can't tell me otherwise
One of my favourite albums since the first time I heard it - via a tape copied from a friend with the tracklist and lyrics hand written. I was 13. This album is like a longtime friend.
Made me nostalgic for the nineties
A great listen to the debut album from Coldplay which is a band that has maybe surprisingly endured in popularity for twenty years. You can hear the fresh energy of the band as they created their own soundworld consisting of driving (sometimes disjointed) rhythms, understated instrumentals, complemented by the unique, emotive quality of Chris Martin’s voice. A very impressive first album from a great band for the new Millennium. Yellow, surely must be one of the most loved songs of the 21st century. My favourite song is Sparks. The harmony does it for me alongside the pleading tone of Chris’ voice. Made me nostalgic listening.
nunca tinha ouvido inteiro n esperava ser tão bom
wooooo coldplay let’s gooooo
Their popular for a reason. Their early stuff was awesome. It's drifted off since, but this was awesome.
Old Coldplay was based.
Great.
Mellow with a strong opening and middle, winding down towards the end. The songs have a melancholic longing in them, still sounding like the 90s but fresh enough to be distinct. Plenty of catchy hooks in their strongest songs and the rest were far from mediocre. I also really enjoyed that I could understand the lyrics without having to look them up. 'Yellow' is my least favourite song on the album but the only one I was familiar with prior to listening. 'Shiver' and 'Trouble' being my personal standouts with 'Don't Panic' not far behind.
Favorite so far! Very good!
Not my favourite Coldplay album but they really locked in their signature sound right away in this album. Very iconic and deserves credit for being such a great debut. Favourite tracks::Yellow, Everything's Not Lost
Their first and best
Amazing album. Top to bottom.
Definitely the weakest of Coldplay's big 3 almost-perfect albums, but still an absolute JAM. I gotta give 5 stars, especially as I think part of my resistance is a lack of familiarity compared to the other 2.
10/10
I was so deep into early Radiohead at the time that when I first saw the “Yellow” video on tv shortly after this album came out I was instantly hooked. Coldplay’s early work is way more than just a 90s era Radiohead pastiche though. Listening to this album (and even parts of Rush Of Blood…) Coldplay still sounds like a small bad writing simple, emotional, well-crafted songs instead of the overblown trend-hopping pop stars they’ve been the last decade plus. It seems kind of hopeless to think that they’ll ever sound like this again, but it would be nice if they went back to sounding anything like a rock band again.
Even from this point of view, where Coldplay is the first band to make featurings with BTS, their debut is a gem.
Such a great album. I didn’t realize how many songs I knew by heart. This is a true gem.
Love it
A classic. Every song is good.
Classic, Coldplay's best is still their first.
i loved this album it’s amazing. no skips and they showed so much emotion but it wasn’t a soppy thing.
Enjoyed it more than I was expecting
Coldplay is nice, but it all sounds about the same, doesn’t it?
- Wow Yellow is a real tearjerker. - Lowkey enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, the guitars are amazing dude.
My go to chill album, altho there r a few songs which r a bit pants
Even 26 after it was released this album feels original and refreshing. Much better than the basic drivel they descend into
Coldplay is a truly good band. 5/10 saved. Saved a few more tracks from this album - "Shiver," "Trouble," and "High Speed". Already liked "Don't Panic" and "Spies". "Yellow" is good but I don't like it anymore.
As a Coldplay fan (and, yes, I **am** fun; full throated and uniconic) I've always been more a fan of their later albums: 'Viva La Vida' and on. Heck, I don't even listen to 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' that often outside of "Clocks". But all the same, I'd hafa be a fool to deny this album. Sure, it might be a **little** Radiohead-y — but I like those guys, too. A little "Yellow" ain't gonna ruin **my** day.
Such an calm album so beautiful frr the vibes hit ngl
Coldplay's early run is legendary. What a fall off man.
Some brilliant songs but I can't give coldplay a 5
This is a significant debut album from the start of the new century. It is the sound of a band each with a contribution and the bridge between Radiohead, U2 and the post britpop indie rock boom. Yellow, Trouble and Don't Panic were good enough to get them an early Glastonbury headline before they went stratospheric with the sophomore effort. The 'album' tracks show an approach to writing that would develop into a more melodic approach that would centre less around Johnny Buckland's Edge-influenced chiming guitar and more around Chris Martin's piano led songs. Nevertheless this album was an auspicious start that managed to improve remarkably in the coming decade.
Surprisingly solid. Nothing too crazy or dynamic here but great sound and writing.
Solid britpop album. Coldplay gets some hate for later stuff but I really dig their first couple of albums.
I quite enjoyed this one. The atmosphere is incredible and is very well done. Most of the songs give me vibes reminiscent of the softer songs on Radiohead's The Bends and OK Computer. Just so peaceful, soothing and angelic. I thought because 'Coldplay' is the artist, I thought it was - just like A Rush of Blood to the Head - going to be just pop slop, but both albums are pretty meticulous. Out of the two Coldplay albums I've heard now, I overwhelming prefer and see myself returning to this one. Highlight Song/s: "Spies"
Don't Panic - 4/5 Shiver - 4/5 Spies - 3.5/5 Sparks - 4/5 Yellow - 5/5 Trouble - 4/5 Parachutes - 4/5 High Speed - 4/5 We Never Change - 3.5/5 Everything's Not Lost - 4/5 You could tell that these guys had something on their hands when this came out. However it's just been relegated as "the one with Yellow" as Coldplay commercialized themselves and lost what they had originally. This first foray has traces of what was left of Britpop, with mostly stripped down instrumentals outside of Yellow which added in some more for texture. I can see why this is just Yellow and 9 other songs, but those other songs are good enough to not let Coldplay be a one hit wonder. Unfortunate. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Yellow
I unapologetically love a solid third to half of this album, and I'm really okay with the rest, too. Very nostalgic, almost a five for me.
I really like the vibe of this. The 3 album run after this are better in my opinion. Solid 3.5/5.
Liked this so much!!!
Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did
Once upon a time, Coldplay made really good albums!
About 2/3 of the way through this album, I started to get worried that I might have to give 5 stars to Coldplay, the band that I proclaimed the worst band in the world around 2005. My position has relaxed significantly since then, but still was not expecting to like this so much. Fortunately it kind of petered out at the end.
Sehr gut, und Vorbereitung zum kommenden Meisterstück Yellow, Shiver, everything is not Lost...
Don't Panic
I hadn't heard this before other than Parachutes & Yellow (obviously). Pretty good first album.
Like many, I don't particularly enjoy the band Coldplay has become. However, I really enjoyed revisiting this album that I loved in my youth. Sure, Chris Martin isn't going to win any awards for the lyrics, and he's never been a great singer, but those things make this album really approachable. It's like a comforting hug.
Really solid pop-rock from Coldplay. “Coldplay used to be good” is kinda overdone at this point but based on this album i’m inclined to agree. The songs are all about love i think? New relationships, unrequited love, failing relationships. Works for me honestly. I’m also really drawn to Chris Martin’s voice here. Very charming and fits the songs well. If i think about it for too long i start to hear that chainsmokers song he was on…. Some of the twinkly lead guitar work sounds like ringtones/corporate training music but i understand that trope probably comes from companies ripping THIS off.
There was a time I would have sworn that A Rush of Blood to the Head was the best Coldplay (Viva La Vida eventually dethroned that album), but as I get older and their career advances, it becomes clear that Rush was the band perfecting a formula that they would use off and on for the rest of time. This album edges out Rush these days because it is hungry and imperfect.
Turns out I'm more of a Coldplay fan than I realised.
This is pretty nice debut album. It's understandable how this kicked off their popularity
#26 It's too bad Coldplay just makes corporate-slop music these days, because they really had something special in their early years. This is a strong debut album, even if it falls off a bit towards the end.
I like the album
Hard to decouple my rating from the deep nostalgia I have for this, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y. Whatever your opinion of 2026 Coldplay, I don’t think you can deny these albums sound great and have some absolutely classic songs on them.
I feel like Coldplay is like bread. The same basic ingredients go into every song, it's pretty beige or white for the most part, not a lotta spice involved overall, but it's still good. Bread is good. Also white people tend to go bonkers over even subpar bread (I say as a white person who does this, AND as a white person who enjoys Coldplay. I'm part of the problem.)
Favorite track(s): Don't Panic, Shiver, Sparks, Yellow, Trouble Heard before Previous rating: 7/10
Oh cool, the other well regarded Coldplay album that i’ve been meaning to listen to, (and i loved that other one!) Pleased to say this was solid throughout, don’t love it as much as the following album, but it was beautifully somber and melancholic throughout. Standouts are Sparks, We Never Change and Everything’s Not Lost.
Gorgeous album
This is like 1989 but I have good memories of the songs. I have no idea if I’m a nostalgia merchant but god they could write. A shame about their newer stuff.
Enjoyed. Most of it is kinda sleepy but enjoyable.
Had forgotten I actually quite liked this at the time, and not without reason. Nicely-crafted (if rather inoffensive) songs that actually sound like humans creating music together, with some subtly effective guitar playing. Have basically hated everything they've done since, though...
I'm not good at analysing but ironically this album feels that i'm jumbing from a plane ,the wind the pressure everything. i hate coldplay so much!!!!
Good album but not my absolute favorite Coldplay one. 7.1/10
I enjoyed this far more that I anticipated. Great "Sunday " music.
This came out the year I was pregnant and is too wrapped up in nostalgia for a proper review. But I think this album held up well-
If this exact album was released by a band called coldhead or radioplay, it would be a 3.98 on RYM 4
Suosikit: biisikolmikko Sparks, Yellow, Trouble 4/5
some real BANGERS but some mids but still WOW shiver <3 4/5 but maybe nostalgia is really carrying me on this one
Some monotony on the album (spies, high speed) but overall I love the guitar (sparks, we never change) and piano (trouble). I’m biased because I listen to a lot of songs off of this album
I don't care if it's not cool, I enjoyed it. Whatever.
Honestly, I didn’t think I’d like this album that much until just now. The guitar playing is great, and Chris Martin’s vocals are warm and melancholic. There are amazing tracks on here such as “Yellow” and “Sparks” that give you the feels all the way through. I enjoyed this quite a bit and works definitely listen to it again. Overall Score: Strong 7
Some rlly good songs but a couple I rlly disliked mainly shiver
This, AROBTTH and x&y are actually really great albums
I made fun of this because it was the album that dropped on my birthday. But honestly, it starts pretty strong and I love the piano. Green Eyes is sweet.
Don’t Panic // Shiver // Sparks // Yellow // Trouble //
First two reviews of this album were 1s, don't understand why. It's a great, chill vibe. Amazing debut album. Have enjoyed this one since childhood.
Coldplay is good, this one is a little muted and soft but some great tracks. The other albums from this time, more anthemic really unlocked something in me 3.5
An not-quite-perfect but solid debut album that showed so much promise. Unfortunately it was better than everything that would come after.
Already knew this album but forgot how good it was. Used to think Rush of Blood was far and away their best but this is almost there
So I know it’s not kosher to say you like Coldplay. And yes Chris can come across as a bit of a twat. But listening to parachutes fresh after a few years I have to say it is a stunningly accomplished debut album. It’s hard to hear anything new into such oversaturated radio songs as yellow, don’t panic and to some extent shiver but I could appreciate the tight musicianship they have and the absolute conviction in the lyrical delivery which makes them sound like they are 8-10 years in -not fresh on the scene. I do prefer two of their follow ups (Rush of blood and viva la vida) as more complete albums whereas parachutes doesn’t quite hold together as well as an album. The lesser songs are very much filler but with six standouts that’s far better than average. So hate on me all you want but, ignoring the public image (and thank the almighty we are far past the Chris and Gwynth show) I still feel you can really appreciate this for the music.
Some good tunes
Bueno, pero no tan bueno
A solid, melodic album before they became mega-annoying.
Pretty good.
Chris Martin may have an insufferable quality to him but this album is a perfect exhibition as to why they are pop music. The good kind of pop. Their songs have been used countless times whether it was to get through troubling times, coming to terms with terminal illness, the wonder of life and love - this album absolutely deserves merit for evoking such visceral emotions. To impact masses in the way they did in the early 2000s should not be dismissed.
Very good album. For some reason, I had never listened to Coldplay with real interest. I found this album very good. I enjoyed "Sparks", "Yellow", "Trouble" (I'd say this was my favourite track), or "High Speed". It's a solid 4.
Viva La Vida is the best Coldplay album, hands down. Parachutes has good tracks on it and there are some songs on here that I LOVE, but there are other songs I don't necessarily love either.
Listened to this a bunch when it first came out. Great debut album - really enjoy all the tracks from start to finish. Just a bit too subdued to earn 5 stars.
fantastic album and very much holds up.
Have never been so indifferent to discover a hidden track. That said, have to admit this is an above average album for its genre and over it's full length did just enough to edge a 4
Not a huge Coldplay fan but I enjoy their earlier stuff much more that later. So this is enjoyable, some great songs. Although I find his falseto grating
This álbum is alright
Honestly, never listened to coldplay album up to this point, because I thought they were just a ,,hits band’’. But boy was I wrong, it is so good it’s crazy. Such a comfort album, sets you in a mood like no other. Still feel like some parts of it are just okay but nonetheless great listen.
Nice melodies, will definitely listen again to this record.
Great record. I enjoyed the mellow and introspective tones that it was going for. Favourite Track(s): Shiver, Don't Panic, Sparks, Yellow Least Favourite Track(s): High Speed
Solid. I would have never have listened to this otherwise.
A mellow version of rock, almost post-rock, which is enjoyable when one's nervous system needs support. 4.5/5
hood classic
Everyone had at least one friend in uni who told you they were a musician, and could play multiple instruments. When they asked you to come see them play, it was always with the knowledge that we'd still be friends even if they were a bit shit. Which they usually were. Coldplay tap in to the same crappy vibes as those guys (it's always guys). But unlike your mate, being invited to the local pub to see them, Coldplay can actually write an ok song. Parachutes is good. A few timeless classics in there. Chris Martin is still whiny.
Somewhat wild, but there was a time, when Coldplay was actually good. Favorite song here is probably Spies.
sehr melancholisch.
This album starts strong, it also has Yellow which was the first single I heard that made me turn my head to pay attention to Coldplay. But some tracks in the middle are kinda boring. I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since this came out!
My favorite Coldplay album. Highlights: Shiver, Sparks, Yellow, Spies, Trouble and Everything’s Not Lost. 4.1
Really solid from start to finish. Enjoyed listening to that again for the first time in years. 4.4
Who’s really got anything bad to say about a Coldplay album? It’s tots sad boy music but it’s really beautiful and as many angsty middle school memories as this one brings up, I can really appreciate some incredible song writing on this one.
3.5 I think? Or 4??? I’ll round up to 4
Having bought this when it came out it has aged well, great singles, and the rest is not filler l.
great so far
"viva la vida" pep guardiola visca barca 💙❤️
So I have always been adamant that i hate Coldplay. They are so middle class and nice and Chris Martin is just such a gangly, golden retriever of a man that he annoys me even whilst seeming like an actual nice bloke. I always said it would be great to play bass for Coldplay as you would be minted and no-one would know who you are. If people told me they liked Coldplay they went into the "ah you are one of those beige types" category. That said, and I stand by all of the above .... I quite liked this album and will likely listen to it again....although i am not sure I am prepared to admit that yet outside of here....
What happened to Coldplay
Hate Coldplay all you want, im not a fan myself. But as far as debut albums are concerned this one delivers in all fronts. I gravitate towards debuts because I feel you get the raw talent without outside influence, true art if you will. And this record is proof that my methods work. Good show!
I was going to give this three stars, but I really like the very last song, so I am bumping up to four stars.
I can’t help but love this.
An excellent debut album. Hit after hit. 4 stars. Fave - Sparks.
Very competent debut.
Coldplay huh? I think a younger version of myself might have hated this. Me at 39, however, is a different story. Maybe this is just a good record. I’ll admit I never really gave this a fair shake as a teenager. This was cool. 4/5
good. my mom hated coldplay when i was growing up other than yellow but i listened to this now for the first time and i rather enjoyed it, whiny piano music gets me.
who hurt chris martin that much? ;( or did he really hurt someone…
This is soooooo much better than the other cosplay album
Early coldplay was a lot better, authenticly quoting influences like my bloody valentine and britpop greats. Damn you Chris Martin for nearly making me cry. Take your points and get out of here.
4.5 - Late night sad mood listen, great album with a lot of good songs.
Well...at the time I remember thinking it was kind of backpacking off of Radiohead's more accessible stuff. Radiohead were going more experimental so these guys got sucked into the vacuum left behind. Relistening now I still think I nailed it hahaha. This is good pop songwriting though and the guy can sing. It's where they went after this record that disappoints me. It';s a bit white-boy depresso, however it is polished and dressed up and then you get smacked in the face with YELLOW which as a song lyric doesn't make much sense, and despite the production not ageing well the song still slaps. Sparks was a fav.. oh snap I forgot about Trouble! That spoke to my broken teen heart.
Good album, definitely a few songs that stand out from the others. Never quite understood the mass appeal of Yellow, but it's alright. Favourite song on this one is definitely trouble
Another band that went off a cliff edge. This seems a world away from the music they’re making now. V nostalgic for any kid growing up around this time. It’s not a perfect album but has some of the best songs of the 00s on it. I listened to it on the way back from a night out and it might be the perfect musical accompaniment for this. Growing up the whole album felt very ‘London’ so being able to drift through the streets living here now listening to it is a trip.
3.9 2x w/ Erika on way to and from Varsity/High
OG Coldplay - so good. I miss these moody vibes from them
Ephemeral
This reminds me of my childhood
Coldplay? Never heard of them… 😉
Look, I am dreading the next few inevitable Coldplays on this list as much as anyone, but their debut? This is reasonable. It's slow, like so much of Coldplay is... in fact, I recall my critique of Yellow being just that... a little slow, a little boring. By comparison, it's a masterpiece, but that's always been a vibe they brought. But here there is still an earnestness. "Don't Panic" feels trite at this point, but it still delivers as an opener. "Trouble" crawls, but it's got a sluggish beauty. Like, these things are just facts here, not criticisms. Chris Martin feels tired in a way that you feel in your bones on songs like "Spies"... it's an ominous quiet. It feels stylistic in a way that it doesn't in future albums. Probably a light 4*, but worth having in the collection. I am so biased toward Shiver as the top track. It's got a great riff, a great melody, and an urgency that is rarely heard in Coldplay.
This album has long been on my list of guilty pleasures. I feel like Coldplay had an opportunity to quit whilst they were ahead. Instead, they opted to milk their success until the milk turned sour. Parachutes still has the easy listening pop-rock vibe that made them so popular in the first place. This is a classic sing-along album from the turn of the millennium with some of their best tracks. It doesn't do anything spectacular but I can't help but enjoy it.
Really enjoyed it! Songs with melodies and words I could understand.
Overall, I really enjoyed the album. Coldplay definitely has a distinct sound that you can sometimes love and sometimes Haight, but this album just really shows them and really shows their impact on music currently.
Pretty good.
Wait why’s this kinda……
This is a very solid and mature debut. Better than a lot of their most recent stuff.
Loved but I think OK Computer is better 4/5
I hate my parents for not putting it when I was birth. That is probably why I look so ugly... I'm of course overeacting but still, I really do like it. Overall it's pretty solid, I didn't felt like skipping any track. My personal favorite is Trouble.
Got a lot of unfair criticism BITD and now gets reviewed by what a boring benign stadium act Coldplay has become, but this is a really solid album, no weak tracks on it. "Shiver" is the best here. Distorted and overdriven guitars even. Fairly included in the list. 4/5.
Parachutes unfolds like a record suspended in dusk, a liminal atmosphere shapes the entire listening experience, giving the album a sense of emotional transience, as though each song exists in the fragile space between warmth and loss. Musically, the arrangements are disarmingly simple. The melodies lean toward the understated, creating an intimacy that feels almost tactile. Lyrically, the record is steeped in a gentle, persistent melancholy. Even its most outwardly romantic moments carry an undercurrent of vulnerability. As a debut, the album is remarkably self-assured. Rather than aiming for spectacle, it lingers. In hindsight, it also stands as a kind of outlier, a record that captures the band in an indie-leaning moment before their sound expanded outward. There’s a sense, listening back, that this was both a beginning and a singular point: an arrival fully formed, and perhaps a fleeting one.
Good vibes
Hate to admit it but I enjoyed this one
qué pasó Chris Martin? antes eras chévere.
Shoutout to my friend Tilman who loves this album dearly.
One of the reasons they became huge was because of great albums like this.
Classic
Didn’t really realise how much Coldplay has changed over the years. Really enjoyed this, never understood the Coldplay hate
Great debut album and honestly the beginning of the golden age of Coldplay, should have stopped after Viva La Vida. Fave Track: Sparks
Hating this band as Radiohead-ripoff dogshit feels a bit overdone at this point. I do have quite a bit of love for this album and the two that followed it - but coming back to this one, I feel like some of the criticisms are pretty valid. Still a classic to me though. 4/5
A year ago, I would've said this record is just "alright". It peaks with "Yellow" and everything else surrounding it is passable at best. Now I realize it's a masterpiece and we were robbed of Coldplay veering towards post-rock and shoegaze after A Rush Of Blood To The Head and instead we got retail radio bullshit. What a shame. This album still peaks with "Yellow" though. That song is crafted by the gods.
Really solid. Definitely my favourite Coldplay that I'm aware of. Clear good songwriting and a very direct delivery with nothing too gimmicky going on in arrangement or production. Clean and tidy
A feeling-first album of maybe not "soft rock" but, at least, "snug rock." Mellow guitar strums, soft piano that always asks your opinion before it makes a decision, and starswept dreamer-boy Chris Martin singing wistfully and giving you his best wishes Every song on the album dedicates itself to serving the atmosphere that the cover art provides; a comfortable night haze, stars in the sky to look at and wonder over. A research project into human serenity
Også fokus på introspektive tekster, følelser osv. lidt ligesom the man who.
Saudades do antigo Coldplay!
7.5/10 I liked it a lot!
no bells and whistles, completely unoffensive and actually really enjoyed this!
Coldpway
typically don't listen to Coldplay but I enjoyed this
Better than I was anticipating. Before Coldplay was lame.
Now, I’m the first person to rag on the shite that Coldplay have been churning out for the last 20ish years. But cast your mind back to 2000, when these fresh faces British boys took some jangly tunes to the top of the charts and charmed everyone on the way. This is a good album, especially for a debut, but just short of greatness for me. Key tunes: Don’t Panic, Shiver, Spies, Everything’s Not Lost. Yellow has been overplayed to hell so hard to appreciate these days, but it was a decent song in the first place before it got overexposed.
I knew most of the songs on this album. I owned quite a few of the songs. My favorite Coldplay song, Shiver, is on this album. I own Yellow, Shiver, We Never Change, and Trouble. I’ve heard a couple of the other songs before as well.
Nostalgi maxing, søt plate, men litt kjedelig
Digg 4/5
I began listening to Parachutes with really low expectations, and ended up pretty surprised. I've always lumped Coldplay in with other hyper-popular pop bands like Imagine Dragons into the genre of "coworker music", and while it's not nearly as bad as Imagine Dragons, it's still well within "coworker music" territory. That being said, it's not bad, I really like how the whole album has a really warm and nice tone, and while the songs aren't anything special, they're still pretty enjoyable. "Yellow" really exemplifies the warm sound well, and is actually a pretty song, even with his singing. "Trouble" was also a really good song, and definitely contends with "Yellow". While I'm not going to become a Coldplay fan anytime soon, I definitely don't think of them as bad as I did before. Favorite Song: "Yellow"
No sé si es el momento emocional por rl que estoy pasando pero me pegó fuerte y we never change directo al corazón
4/5
shiver is my fav track on this
i too wanna live life and never be cruel.
This was one of my top albums in 2022!! This album will always be iconic and so so nostalgic for me. no notes at this time :)
Very relaxed chill songs, crazy to compare to what cold play sounds like in 2026
Pretty great for a debut. Super familiar with the hits but I had never listened to this whole album. Not a fan of current Coldplay music but I really enjoyed this one.
Good album from Coldplay, but not my f as favorite. I think Yellow, Trouble, and Spies carry it. The other tracks are decent but Rush of Blood to the Head feels like a more complete album that was the evolution of the sound they were aiming for here.
Thematically/lyrically corny (to be expected) but really pleasantly suprised, super listenable and enjoyable. RYM: N Saved a song: N
People make fun of Coldplay a lot, but this is actually a pretty solid and good album.
Cold play yellow is a bop Aye pretty good didn’t think i woulda been into this as much as i was, I thought it dropped off but it ended up auto playing another Coldplay album and I got three songs in before I even copped on good stuff
Nice :)
Awesome and lush pop music that’s nothing but pleasure to the ear. It feels a bit generic in some spots, but Coldplay does a really good job at keeping things engaging with their gorgeous production and great performances. Obviously Yellow is a classic, but I also really love Spies, Sparks, and Everything’s Not Lost (none of which I was familiar with before). Happy to be introduced to more of this awesome stuff. Overall, great listen from front to back, and a wonderful sound that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
I personally prefer Rush of Blood to the Head, but this is still enjoyable pop rock. 8/10.
Listened to this one a decade ago and it still holds up. Processed and dreamlike but the acoustic sounds still come through very well. Favourite track: Shiver
I'd never actually listened to this the whole way through but I really do like their second album better
I used to be the kind of music fan who’d dismiss a band like Coldplay as music for posh picnic crowds at Glastonbury. I couldn’t separate the music - which, secretly, I kind of liked - from the image of the insufferable Chris Martin. Now, 25 years on, with a bit more maturity and an open mind, I’ve listened to Parachutes in full for the first time, and honestly… it’s kind of lovely. It’s warm, nostalgic, and full of feeling. Yellow instantly takes me back to my college/university days, the video still fresh in the memory. Then there's Don't Panic, Sparks, Trouble - so many wonderful songs, and even the album tracks are solid (even if it does drift a little during the latter half). It’s an album driven by emotion, with genuinely beautiful melodies throughout.
Has to be one of the best debut albums ever
I like the vibes so far, like the sound is dynamic. Spies - the bit at the end is nice with the repetition Sparks - It's crazy to think that i have listened to this in many tv and i'm taking the time to listen the first time. High speed - very chill, very zen Yellow is my absaloute fav. I think the end of the album was my fav and i fell asleep listening to it.
I can kind of shocked this was on here. But Yellow rocks of course. Makes me think...will there be a maroon 5 album here or something?
Very nice sounding soft rock, certainly not adventurous but it knows what it is and does it well
Je to výborné. Rush sa mi páči ešte viac, preto dávam 4. Ďalšie albumy podľa mňa už nedosiahli na tieto dva.
You can't deny the influence of this record!
Not a big Coldplay Fan but definitely a solid album for those who are.
favorites: dont panic; shiver; yellow
I’m not sure why I’ve been so resistant to giving Parachutes a proper listen. The songs I heard a lot — Don’t Panic and Yellow — I always thought were pretty good. This time through, I was really struck by Trouble, which I recognized but had never appreciated before. The whole album has a nice flow. Yes, it’s the equivalent of “Indie Easy Listening” but I find that description far more welcoming than I did in 2000. This feels like Coldplay at their most honest, and I found that refreshing.
Alternative rock, post-Britpop, indie rock, soft rock. Liked it more than expected.
I'm quite familiar with this album. When Coldplay first came out, I admit I didn't like it. I found I could enjoy "Trouble" but still had a tough time getting their overall thing. When their second album came out, I enjoyed that quite a bit more. I checked that out, and found it to be solid, and upon revisiting this album, I was able to see it in a different light and came to enjoy it on a similar level. But then they released their third album. It's got one or two good songs, but otherwise blah. And the "blah" has only intensified since then. So, it has become disheartening to listen to the first two Coldplay albums, knowing what has happened since then. These first two albums are absolutely worth being on this list and a clear distinction should be made between them and the albums thereafter.
🥲🥲🥲
The fact that this album produces so much rage in people amuses me. I mean, it’s a bit dull and uniform and it never breaks out of its comfort zone, but it’s not terrible. For a debut record it’s confident and slick. A perfectly pleasant album that knows what it’s doing and does it well.
This is a very, very good album. I liked it when it was released and it's still a cracking listen
Good album, Coldplay are overhated (If you disregard Chris Martin and new Coldplay stuff)
I know coldplay is a meme and gets hate but this first album is really nice. Great production and chris martins voice is so soothing. Feels like im floating. 4 stars
2026.01.25
a better album than I remember
yknow, i actually liked this way more than i thought i would.
Still their best
Gorgeous! Loads of Bends-era Radiohead influence, hints of OK Computer.
Fantastic album. Songs, singing, lyrics, instruments. Gawd I’m so old fashioned. 4.5.
Just what was need to fill the radiohead alt rock space after Kid A. Shame where Coldplay ended up
The album starts with an a lot of emotions. Whether motivated, sad, or excited, you can feel how the sound of the project will be. You can hear a young Coldplay starting to figure out the direction they’re going. It sounds like mistakes and what ifs. However, you hear the “we”ll be fine” and keep going as well.
I forgot how great this album is. Wow. Genuinely underrated.
It's funny how you can say something that seems defensive to some, but from you're standing, it's just a fact: this album is from a time when Coldplay was simply a better band. This, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y are a reason to listen to Coldplay. The instrumental at the beginning of "Shiver" does exactly that. It has this dramatic weight to it's fuzzy guitars that match the somber tones of Martin. Just a really great track, I wish they lead Parachutes with this instead of "Don't Panic". The same raw emotion is conveyed across most other tracks in the album, most notably on "Spies", "Yellow" and "Trouble". Especially Trouble, with lyrics many people can probably relate to. Although the 'vibes' of each song feels very similar, the harmonies and tone of each feel very distinct. As a first album, it's killer, but as time goes on and evolution doesn't happen quite as much as it should have, this album becomes bittersweet for Coldplay fans, I feel. Overall, love this album. Reminds me of childhood and feels like it has soul and purpose at it's core still.
So sweet that it's easy to overlook how gnarly a couple of those distorted guitar tones are
A solid debut album. “And it was all yellow.”
Pretty good. Some songs I heard before but never listened to the whole albums pretty good for winter sad slow vibes ha ha
I think Coldplay's reputation is a little unfair. Here you can definitely see their ability to tap into emotion, both quiet and soaring.
sad boy music but goog
I cannot really fault this album. It is the only Coldplay album I would listen to now. Have to step back from the its on trend to dislike Coldplay and remember how it felt like to listen to this album when it came out in 2000...and that was a good feeling.
