This is a pretty good album. Much like the rest of the early Coldplay stuff it's fine and it's much better than what came later. I can see why it was popular it's definitely an easy listen. Shiver I think my be my favourite.

This album sounds like a proposal/weddingplaylist. Its no bad music, especially "Trouble" is just good. But its a bit too much Kitsch for me (had to put on some high on fire afterwards)

Not very impressed by what appears to be a very popular band. Very bland and monotonal.

The lyrics were written by a divorced Dad who sees his kids once every few months and wants to use this window of of opportunity impart wisdom upon them. But all he can think of is Live Laugh Love. Vocals are posh bloke puts on estuary accent to appear like a man of the people. Music almost nonexistent. I cut the grass while listening to this. The rum tum tum of my elderly petrol lawnmower was the best thing I heard. Better than everything else I’ve heard by this lot like they’re trying and failing to sound like 00’s losees Athlete. 1 star.

Yawn. Look, folks, it's a pop-rock band. My position on the ranging debate over whether or not they are good, highly influential, overrated, et cetera is very simple: they aren't worth the energy to debate. The album itself was very well-produced mediocrity. This is boring. Influence 3. Hits 3. Quality 5. Intangibles 3. My daughter had to wake me up when it was over 2.

Technically it’s not bad, just a bit boring. Some decent melody’s and such but starts to really drag on with the second half of the album being quite depressing - fucking he’ll just realised it’s only 42 mins, feels a lot longer. Don’t Panic is my favourite song and (not coincidentally) the shortest one

Coldplay innit

This was a bit of a blast from the past -- my girlfriend bought me this CD in 8th grade (and I was done thinking it was cool or good by the end of 9th grade). It was the kind of album that "rocked" but I could still listen to it in the car with my mom. It sorta sounds like Radiohead if Thom Yorke decided he wanted to write hit songs and date Hollywood actresses. At the time, Coldplay were an unknown group of British balladeers, but within a couple years they would set the template for the next 2 decades of adult contemporary. So, in a lot ways, this album aged badly -- too many other bands sound like this now, and they're all crappy and annoying. Sorry to Chris Martin and co, this is not strictly their fault. But it sure would help their cause if they ever wrote a single song with some teeth.

Radiohead for suburban moms

I remember getting this shortly after the album broke in the US. The Post Cool Britania era was a weird time. Damon was crying on album over Justine. The Gallaghers were too busy fighting to make a decent album. Pulp was Pulp. Then the video for Yellow was everywhere. It seemed Coldplay would slide into that semi Britpop lane. At times it does, but I find it to be mostly Chris Martin sounding sad. Shiver is good, Yellow is still Yellow. The rest? snoozefest. It's all so bland and lacking personality.

Don't know why it's on this list, but this is a perfectly fine album. Nothing more nothing less.

This album starts strong, it also has Yellow which was the first single I heard that made me turn my head to pay attention to Coldplay. But some tracks in the middle are kinda boring. I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since this came out!

God this is boring. Going from OK computer yesterday to this today was like falling through a kaleidoscope into a bowl of oatmeal. Listened on the way home from work and almost fell asleep at the wheel, but at least that would put an end to it all. There's a couple of moments where it looks like something vaguely interesting is going to happen before it quickly collapses into the same trite bullshit, lyrically and musically. Every song seems to try to prop itself up on about 2-3 somewhat competent ideas repeated ad infinitum. 1.5

Listening to this, I got lost thinking why was Coldplay not well regarded or acquired some status, compared to other bands. I read something about the earnestness of their music and how hard it was for something like that to resonate in an era of apathy and cynicism. And I'm in favor of that view. But listening, I don't really feel that big of a connection or amazement from their music. They are not bad, for a debut album is decent. But beyond the singles, this is not remarkable. And I think that's the problem: their music on this album is okay. In that logic, their next works, where they experimented and delved on other genres are probably more interesting. But sadly, I got this notion of them making music for "normies", so I didn't listen more. Maybe they indeed became a pop band. But in some sense, ¿Don't we want to see our favorite artists explore and experiment? ¿Is not this a monkey paw situation? Maybe the most valuable part of this exercise of listening music is the capacity to recheck some artists, their music and appreciate more with a new perspective

Who’s really got anything bad to say about a Coldplay album? It’s tots sad boy music but it’s really beautiful and as many angsty middle school memories as this one brings up, I can really appreciate some incredible song writing on this one.

Coldplay is a band you love to hate, but their first album is usually free of criticism. So I expected to like Parachutes, an album I listened to a few times in the early 2000’s. The album started with a couple of well known bangers and I fully expected to give this four stars. The second half kind of fizzled out though, Coldplay style.

Truly magical experience, as mom had been playing this the day before we were told to listen! You were already ahead of the game at three months. You are also "A rush of blood to the head fan as well" :-) Don't panic is definitely your favorite, as you love when mommy sings along in her crazy voice, especially "yeah we do, yeah we do!" ( Mom actually sings "yabba Doo yabba Doo". She's very silly.

What an album, every single song is a masterpiece. Probably coldplay's best put together project, and produces a very strong argument for the greatest debut of all time.

Look good album, poor timing, probably would've been a 4, in 2 months, but if we're getting back to back Coldplay, I'm gonna need Africans on mesas with pianos, iykyk

2. I think that about sums it up.

If Coldplay has no haters I am dead. I guess I generally prefer this Radiohead knockoff era of theirs to their latter Swedish House Mafia for Mums one but it’s degrees of difference at best. I’d regularly think the opening instrumentation for a track was quite nice only for Chris Martin to open his mouth and ruin the whole thing. That said, Yellow and Trouble were basically UK radio mainstays for most of the 00s and have earned their place as a piece of the furniture. Not good furniture, mind. It’s more like some weird little tchotchke you’ve always known at your grandparents house. Hideous, but to not have it there would be fundamentally wrong.

Kind of slow and same Yellow High speed

This is like vanilla pudding. Sure it's fine, but, like... it's vanilla pudding. It's never going to be the best thing you'll eat, and it's bland. You don't go around craving vanilla pudding, you just eat it and move on. (I'm sure there are people that love vanilla pudding. I wonder if they also love Coldplay.) Listening to this album, I can appreciate that it's fine. I can even enjoy it somewhat. But I am never going to be like, "man Parachutes by Coldplay is a great album. I can't wait to hear it again." No, instead it's more of a "that was boring, time to move on." It's just too, dare I say, vanilla, for me to put much energy into. The worst part for me is that there is very little diversity on the whole thing. Almost all the songs are downtempo and similar sounding. That makes it really drag. I feel like the tracks would be better on their own rather than hearing them all together on the album. And that's sort of true, as I recognized plenty of songs on here that I had found fine when hearing them in isolation rather than with the others. So, yeah. Vanilla pudding, in album form. I don't get this as an essential listen. It's fine at best, but really probably a bit below that. Overall: 2.2/5

Could have been worse From the extremely polarized reviews I saw, I was convinced this would be a hit or a massive miss. It wasn’t either. I enjoyed the first few songs, but after that they started to blend together. It wasn’t awful, though, which was better than I was expecting.

Parachutes, while not ground-breaking, is still a memorable album and listening to this again felt like slipping into the comfiest slippers. There's something very endearing about Chris Martin's sad and yearning lyrics - I can see why it's not to everyone's taste but I like it.

Barely any skips. Great Sunday evening music to chill out to and help with the existential dread of work. Probably their best work, maybe neck and neck with Rush of Blood to the Head, before they went stadium rock and boring.

So I have always been adamant that i hate Coldplay. They are so middle class and nice and Chris Martin is just such a gangly, golden retriever of a man that he annoys me even whilst seeming like an actual nice bloke. I always said it would be great to play bass for Coldplay as you would be minted and no-one would know who you are. If people told me they liked Coldplay they went into the "ah you are one of those beige types" category. That said, and I stand by all of the above .... I quite liked this album and will likely listen to it again....although i am not sure I am prepared to admit that yet outside of here....

Nostalgic vibes, one of the first album I ever heard entire in my life. Is a new classic. Lyrically and tecnically beautiful. I relate to the lyrics at this point in my life.

Hate Coldplay all you want, im not a fan myself. But as far as debut albums are concerned this one delivers in all fronts. I gravitate towards debuts because I feel you get the raw talent without outside influence, true art if you will. And this record is proof that my methods work. Good show!

Chris Martin’s voice is just so awful. Everything I don’t want from a singer. The whole thing is just painful and bland and dire.

You can tell Yellow is going to be a hit, and several other songs stand out as well. Very impressive for their first real album and after only a couple of years together. Not a lot of range on this album in their sound, but it's still one you can put on an listen all the way through.

Not my jam. I think Chris Martin has a good voice for the style, but I can't get jiggy with the soft-boi rock style. I will say that the remastered version sounds great in headphones. "Shivers" is the one track that I think goes in a general playlist.

I mean it's Coldplay, what is there to say. I think they're overhated but also overplayed. I don't dislike the album but I also don't love it. I will say I think Yellow is overrated and not even the best song on this album, but I wasn't unhappy listening to any of it, even if it tends to sounds samey.

🌽 🌽 🌽 IT WAS ALL YELLOW 🌽 🌽 🌽 Shiver’s good, like the drums and guitar pattern on it. I like the title track- it’s a nice little interlude. The twangy guitar on high speed is jammin’. I think my big question I’m chewing on today is “why do I like Radiohead so much and feel the opposite about Coldplay?” Maybe part of it is the overplay. RH feels more vulnerable and sincere, although there were some tracks on here that did feel real to me. It’s a shame newer Coldplay doesn’t seem to have the same stuff.

Early coldplay was a lot better, authenticly quoting influences like my bloody valentine and britpop greats. Damn you Chris Martin for nearly making me cry. Take your points and get out of here.

4.5 - Late night sad mood listen, great album with a lot of good songs.

Well...at the time I remember thinking it was kind of backpacking off of Radiohead's more accessible stuff. Radiohead were going more experimental so these guys got sucked into the vacuum left behind. Relistening now I still think I nailed it hahaha. This is good pop songwriting though and the guy can sing. It's where they went after this record that disappoints me. It';s a bit white-boy depresso, however it is polished and dressed up and then you get smacked in the face with YELLOW which as a song lyric doesn't make much sense, and despite the production not ageing well the song still slaps. Sparks was a fav.. oh snap I forgot about Trouble! That spoke to my broken teen heart.

Good album, definitely a few songs that stand out from the others. Never quite understood the mass appeal of Yellow, but it's alright. Favourite song on this one is definitely trouble

Coldplay is awful.

While this didn’t suck as much as I remembered, I cannot understand why it made it on the 1001 list. Solid D+ C- album.

Another band that went off a cliff edge. This seems a world away from the music they’re making now. V nostalgic for any kid growing up around this time. It’s not a perfect album but has some of the best songs of the 00s on it. I listened to it on the way back from a night out and it might be the perfect musical accompaniment for this. Growing up the whole album felt very ‘London’ so being able to drift through the streets living here now listening to it is a trip.

Back in the early 2000s, we didn't have internet access at home, so I faithfully and diligently read Finnish music magazines. Probably in August 2000 Markku Halme (RIP) reviewed Parachutes and said in his positive review something like "boys from good families have made a warm, but truly uncommercial album". At fifteen years old I was already a proper indiepop boy so I thought that this will be something no one else will ever love or understand so I bought Parachutes without hearing a note. The disappointment came only around the time of the second album. This is Coldplay's best album and "Don't Panic", "Shiver", "Yellow" and "Trouble" are as clearly Coldplay's four best songs. Unfortunately, the other songs are not nearly as good. There must be a Marvel-multiverse where Coldplay only ever released those four songs on an 12-inch and continued with real estate jobs or banking or whatever and music nerds would pay handsome money to get a copy of that EP.

Never listened. Expectations: Low - Verdict: Not for me - I put this off for a while because I wasn't looking forward to it. It's just bland. The earlier Coldplay is supposed to be the the better stuff and I do prefer it to later hits I've heard but there is still a weird corniness to it for me. Every song sounds a little bit like it's from a bad TV programme.

I always thought Coldplay were an absolute snoozefest of a band, and my view hasn't changed. Sure, 'Yellow' might be an earworm, but I can't for the life of me understand why 'Parachutes' is held in such high regard and how it was the beginning of Coldplay becoming one of the biggest bands of the 21st century. What is it people like about Chris Martin so much? He's essentially ripping off Thom Yorke from Radiohead and is nowhere near as interesting nor as talented, and his falsetto is cringeworthy. Every song sounds the same on 'Parachutes', and there's nothing really interesting going on, except maybe Jonny Buckland's guitar riffs from time to time; admittedly they're not too bad. But this album has sold over 17 million copies worldwide as of last year? How? What makes Coldplay so great? I've never understood it and listening to 'Parachutes' in full has not changed my mind. Look at Coldplay, look how they whine for you, and everything they do, yeah, they are bored fellows. Best songs: Look, Yellow's okay I spose

2000. Debut studio album.

Early Coldplay is actually pretty good. I knew some songs from 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', so I already expected quality. But, given all that, I still cannot, for the life of me, understand just why the fuck such a bland, sterile, commercial, cheesy, saccharine, corny, unsatisfying, sappy, unfulfilling, inoffensive and uninteresting song such as 'Yellow' is so popular. It is, to me, the perfect definition of mediocrity. It has good elements and concepts, but it never gets anywhere because there is no substance. There is nothing to be said and nothing to achieve. It is like if someone took all the filler parts of teen pop ballads and combined them into a whole bunch of nothing. Or, more realistically, if Chris Martin took the worst aspects of 'Fake Plastic Trees' and turned them into a song, without the emotion, passion or meaning of the original. I was considering rating this album 5 stars, but something made it undeserving... and it was all yellow.

Coldplay? Never heard of them… 😉

Look, I am dreading the next few inevitable Coldplays on this list as much as anyone, but their debut? This is reasonable. It's slow, like so much of Coldplay is... in fact, I recall my critique of Yellow being just that... a little slow, a little boring. By comparison, it's a masterpiece, but that's always been a vibe they brought. But here there is still an earnestness. "Don't Panic" feels trite at this point, but it still delivers as an opener. "Trouble" crawls, but it's got a sluggish beauty. Like, these things are just facts here, not criticisms. Chris Martin feels tired in a way that you feel in your bones on songs like "Spies"... it's an ominous quiet. It feels stylistic in a way that it doesn't in future albums. Probably a light 4*, but worth having in the collection. I am so biased toward Shiver as the top track. It's got a great riff, a great melody, and an urgency that is rarely heard in Coldplay.

Ok so I must state my anti Coldplay bias at the door. I find Chris Martin grating as a human being and a musician, but this is primarily based on late 2000s Chris Martin and beyond, the age of the “conscious uncoupling” etc. This is a decent album. There’s a good amount of variety between the slower, emotive stuff, more up tempo pop and some almost (almost) psychedelic sounds. And Yellow is a banger even with all the elongated “oooooo” noises. So hey I enjoyed it but my views aren’t necessarily changed.

One of the few Coldpay albums I actually like. I think their blend of rock is really interesting as adds a level of experimentation electronically with guitair effects. It creates a power of expression when mixed with what Chris has to offer vocally. An extremly well crafted commercial album that remains simplistic melodically but still has depth and complexity. To me this is mega from that commercial perspective. Radiohead is way better but this is still producing at a high level in my book.

This album has long been on my list of guilty pleasures. I feel like Coldplay had an opportunity to quit whilst they were ahead. Instead, they opted to milk their success until the milk turned sour. Parachutes still has the easy listening pop-rock vibe that made them so popular in the first place. This is a classic sing-along album from the turn of the millennium with some of their best tracks. It doesn't do anything spectacular but I can't help but enjoy it.

took me back to the Napster era. Chris Martin has a beautiful falsetto, Spies is a cool song. Their sound is a little polished and emotion free for my taste but there are some fun and lasting pop songs on this album. Everything's Not Lost sounds like a billy joel song.

If Tofu teamed up with White Bread and formed a band. Inoffensive but bland. Obviously plays well with some, but just seems dull. Just when they get your hopes up and seem about to do something interesting - like in Shiver, which starts with a noisy bang - it doesn't last and slips back into blandness. And the falsetto whining doesn't help. Even Yellow - the big hit and their claim to immortality - is a pretty generic bit of anthemic rock that seems to aspire to U2 or Radiohead territory but falls short. Just boring

Overall, I really enjoyed the album. Coldplay definitely has a distinct sound that you can sometimes love and sometimes Haight, but this album just really shows them and really shows their impact on music currently.

Out of college, money spent, See no future, pay no rent, All the money's gone, nowhere to go. Any jobber got the sack, Monday morning turning back, Yellow lorry slow, nowhere to go. But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go! Oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go! Took me years to realise that this middle 8 in You Never Give Me Your Money is a reflection on the time Paul got a job in December 1960 as a second man on a Speedy Prompt Delivery lorry after they came back from the first Hamburg stint. It's such a fascinating little insight into a time where he worried that he was going to have to be a jobber, and not realise that magic feeling in his head. And speaking of magic feelings....this can fark right off!

It's an overly polite record of fair-to-middling quality, saved by Michael Brauer's terrific mix. Earnest, nonthreatening and profoundly accessible, if that's what you want in your rock music. Shudder.

Here are some scenarios where I would recommend this album: you want some entirely forgettable music to cry to; you find Radiohead too edgy and not quite dreary enough; you are having a dinner party with strangers, and you want everyone to be disappointed but unaffected by your music choice. Man, I've hated this album by default since it came out and became the epitome of middle-of-the-road, boring parents' music. But you know what? I'm a boring parent now, and this is pretty enjoyable. Some of the songwriting is decent. Yellow is an absolute smash. I'd still rather listen to something with more character, and I still resent how much they rip off Radiohead. 3*

Album No. 0185 on my list. I've had an ambivalent relationship with Coldplay for a long time. On the one hand, they are certainly one of the most influential bands of the first half of the 2000s, on the other hand, I've always despised them for their decision to completely turn into the obnoxious pop direction after facing a creative crisis after "X&Y". At the time, they were in a similar position asU2 after "The Joshua Tree". But where U2 reinvented themselves without betraying their audience and without losing any of their energy, Coldplay recorded "Viva La Vida" and it got only worse from there. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I had not listened to "Parachutes" for some time, and now that I have, I have to say that it is pretty good. Comparisons to Radiohead's "The Bends" are definitely warranted. "Parachutes" drifts much more into the pop direction and lacks "The Bends'" angsty intensity, making it somewhat more "compliant" (sorry, not a native speaker). Still, "The Bends" is one of my favorite albums of all time, so "Parachutes" is still pretty great and has some unique qualities of its own (e.g. Jonny Buckland's playful guitar licks or the catchiness of most songs). I could definitely imagine many not-so-diehard Radiohead fans in 2000 being drawn towards Coldplay when Radiohead changed their musical direction forever and alienated some of them (and created what could plausibly considered to be the greatest album of this millennium). Anyway, "Parachutes" is a great debut album, showing the high potential that the artist that would become the most successful of the 21st century. The album sounds great, shows the cohesion and the great interplay of the band's members and includes several great songs. Specifically, I will add "Shiver", "Spies", "Yellow" (obviously), "Trouble", and "Everything's Not Lost" to my playlist. I guess, in the end, the highest rating is indeed warranted, making this the sixth album from the year 2000 so far to get five stars. So far, 2000 is the only year the albums from which I rated with five stars consistently. Let's see how long this holds up. 5/5 stars!

Found it pretty boring, but relaxing as if the songwriter had nothing to prove and all the time in the world. Tracks to Track: Yellow (stood out by a mile)

before i listened to this. ana messaged me that i'm not allowed to call it safe or compare it to pantone's color of the year because she already did that. she's evil for that because there really is no other word for this than safe. it's completely serviceable and commercial. the kind of thing you'll hear playing softly as background noise in a business trying to fill the silence because it's unlikely to offend anyone. it's palatable and it has some pleasant moments, but outside of mild toe-tapping, there's not much here that makes it stand out. i listened to this while doing some crosswords, you get what i mean? that's the vibe. i can't even really imagine the type of person who Loves this album, but it might've been better had everything been minecraft parodies i think.

I've never hated Coldplay, at least y'know, the first half of their catalogue. I stick by Viva La Vida or Death and all his friends actually being a great album (even if its not on this list). I find the fact that the highest rated reviews on this website are significantly lower then the average sums up Coldplay. In a word, this album is safe. If it was a color it would be Panotone's colour of the year, Cloud Dancer, and if it got any awards for the best of something today it would rightfully be met with similar outrage. That's not because this album sucks, but rather its because it is the most "okay" album to perhaps have ever existed. Coldplay's first foray is the pinnacle of easily digestible, radio friendly, alt-rock. None of this is an insult, it is doing precisely what it was made to do and it is doing it well. For songs I like from this album, I'll go with trouble, which I heard in countless adverts growing up but I still somewhat like. Songs like High Speed and Sparks are fine too, even if they sound like Radiohead without the parts that make radiohead special

I hate my parents for not putting it when I was birth. That is probably why I look so ugly... I'm of course overeacting but still, I really do like it. Overall it's pretty solid, I didn't felt like skipping any track. My personal favorite is Trouble.

Got a lot of unfair criticism BITD and now gets reviewed by what a boring benign stadium act Coldplay has become, but this is a really solid album, no weak tracks on it. "Shiver" is the best here. Distorted and overdriven guitars even. Fairly included in the list. 4/5.

I started listening to this album on my way to school, but forgot I still had somethings in the queue. I was like "Oh wow, I didn't know Coldplay was this good" and then I went back and looked at the songs I had just listened to and realized it wasn't Coldplay. I had thought the voice kind of sounded like Coldplay, but then once I actually started listening to Coldplay, I was like OHHHH yeah this is definitely them. Going into this album I think I only know Sparks and Shivers. It's decent. Good background music.

Het eerste en beste album, inmiddels een klassieker. Voor mij een dierbaar album, een album wat ik ook op plaat heb en nog regelmatig luister. Denk dat ik dit album en Coldplay zo'n twee jaar later dan release van dit album ontdekte. Op een leeftijd waar je muzikale voorkeur nog moet ontdekken kwam je opeens dit tegen. Op tmf en mtv zag je (als atze en marieke er niet waren) veel r&b en gepolijste popsterren zoals cristina agulera en justin timberlake, zelfs de punk rock zoals blink 182 en sum 41 waar ik graag naar luisterde was gepolijst. Een nummer zoals yellow waar ze de intro starten met een soort detuned gitaar was vreemd en ongemakkelijk maar je bleef er wel naar luisteren als een zuur snoepje voor de kick. Zo ook de stem van chris martin wat voor mij erg fragiel(of zelfs vals) klonk. Het geluid bleef mij toch intrigeren. Na het ontelbaar luisteren van de eerste twee albums en zien van de live dvd 2003 was ik een enorme fan boy geworden. Vol verwachting hadden we het derde album gekocht wat arie cadeau kreeg op zijn verjaardag. (Inlc poster, had ik samen met Atze geregeld in de cd winkel de in passage tussen de hema) De eerste paar luistersessies durfden we het nog niet aan onszelf toe te geven dat we het eigenlijk niks vonden. Hier kon je achteraf het begin van de stadion (rock)pop horen aankomen. Vanaf dat moment ging het alleen maar meer bergafwaarts met mijn waardering voor Coldplay. Je zou het nu niet meer kunnen voorstellen maar het was toen een instap introductie voor iets meer alternatieve muziek. Een album wat mij qua muzieksmaak heeft gevormd. Het opende deuren naar bands zoals radiohead en van radiohead dan weer naar een hoop andere artiesten. Hierdoor is het voor mij ook best lastig om het album objectief te beoordelen. Ik ga toch een poging wagen. Het is best een bijzonder gebalanceerd album. Er zijn geen nummers die veel minder zijn dan de andere. Productie is sober en daardoor resoneert het wel. De muziek is niet creatief geniaal maar vrij eenvoudig. Deze eenvoud is de voornaamste kracht van dit album. Sparks is mijn favoriete nummer en elke keer als je naar de playlist kijkt denk je o, dit is eigenlijk ook wel heeeeel lekker nummer. Tekstueel is het niet persee hoogstand en op momenten zelfs een beetje cliché, iets waar ze later in hun carrière nog veel vaker schuldig aan zouden gaan maken. Ik vraag mijzelf af als het vandaag uit zou komen of ik het dan ook zo goed zou vinden. Durf het niet te zeggen. Ondanks dat er best een hoop andere alternatieve bands waren in die tijd heb ik wel het idee dat dit toch iets nieuws en bijzonders was. Voor mij was het in ieder geval iets nieuws wat is inmiddels is geëvalueerd in een warm bad. Tegenwoordig maakt mij niet zo veel meer uit dat ze van een melancholische minimalistische band naar een happy regenboog pop groep zijn geëvalueerd. 26 jaar van hetzelfde had ik ook niet volgehouden en het maakt dit album wat specialer. Ben blij dat het er is. Objectief is het 4 sterren, voor mij persoonlijk een 5.

Als Coldplay op hun hoogtepunt was gestopt, hadden ze alleen dit album gemaakt. Mijn waardering voor dit album is erg hoog. Het kwam uit in 2000 en bracht een soort kwetsbare, melancholische pop naar een groot publiek. Natuurlijk hoor je invloeden van Radiohead en Jeff Buckley terug, maar Coldplay wist daar een toegankelijk en warm geluid van te maken dat voor veel luisteraars nieuw voelde. In die zin heeft dit album deuren geopend voor latere indie en folkachtige artiesten. Het album staat vol sterke nummers: catchy, warm, melancholisch en met een stem die je uit duizenden herkent. Je moet dit album eigenlijk los zien van alles wat Coldplay later heeft gedaan. De latere samenwerkingen met DJ’s en popartiesten hebben het beeld van de band zo veranderd dat dit album soms wordt weggezet als een guilty pleasure. Dat is het niet. Het is een tijdscapsule van een moment waarop Coldplay nog een kleine, kwetsbare band was.

Pleasant surprise! I knew the singles, but this is a really beautiful album with such a melancholy feel. I haven't enjoyed Coldplay's recent output very much, but this is a modern classic.

Amo los slow instrumentals, las melodías, los lyrics, todo. El coldplay de años posteriores para mi no pega igual, este disco se siente absurdamente raw, sin pretensiones, bien simple y directo. Favoritos son Sparks, Yellow & We never change, pero todo el puto album es excelente. Entiendo igual cómo hay gente que posiblemente le parezca medio embole o todo igual, justo pasa que pega exactamente con mi vibe y taste.

Less into this than their second record. But its still much better than expected. Their modern music is real bad. This is just passable. Better for sure but still not alot of substance. It goes by quick enough. Thats mostly the good things I got. Yellow is a legit good song. Ive always like thay one though. Nothing else really stands out. And thats the best Coldplay has to offer. After this we get viva la Vida or whatever and after like 2009 that got real annoying. So Coldplay is dead I guess. Bye. Didnt hate to know you but I didnt have fun either

3.75 - Grading this album was difficult. Coldplay holds such a huge space in the mainstream rock space, and I have always wondered how that is when I've always viewed them as some version of plain or as just being adequate, safe, and agreeable. That being said, it is a pretty unremarkable album BUT there are a few songs that are so timelessly iconic (at least in my upbringing) that they hold much more weight than what I'd give them on just a first listen. Low 3. I was in a very anxious and fast mindset today, so I was definitely not in the right energy to receive this album. That said, this was much slower than what I expected, and not particularly captivated.

These days, people love to dunk on Coldplay. They’ve almost become the butt of the joke as bands for people who don’t really appreciate ‘good music’. This is certainly true for their recent releases, where they have embraced a more mainstream pop sound and have effectively ‘sold out’ to their corporate overlords. However, this is not a review of their recent albums. This is Coldplay, before they knew fame. And damn, is it good. Raw, emotional lyrics. Masterful songwriting. Excellent multi-instrumentalism. This really is a staggeringly mature debut, and contains many hit songs as well as beautiful hidden gems. Martin, while his voice may not be for some, gives an assured performance with voice, piano and acoustic guitar and his words really conjure up powerful emotions. This debut may not be as good as their sophomore album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, but for me it is still of the highest five star quality. 9/10

A year ago, I would've said this record is just "alright". It peaks with "Yellow" and everything else surrounding it is passable at best. Now I realize it's a masterpiece and we were robbed of Coldplay veering towards post-rock and shoegaze after A Rush Of Blood To The Head and instead we got retail radio bullshit. What a shame. This album still peaks with "Yellow" though. That song is crafted by the gods.

This album is gorgeous. So well crafted and intentional. Not all the songs are bangers, but enough of them are. And the ones that are lesser are still pretty and easy to listen to. There is a certain Coldplay sheen that some people don't seem to be into, but I can't see what the problem would be. Part of me thinks they hate Coldplay because for some reason it's trendy to do so and they think they should. I haven't gone deep into their catalogue before, but I've appreciated the hits as I've heard them. This album is great and worth the esteem it gets. 4.6/5

Endnu et post britpop album som er rigtig godt. Får en til at tænke hvorfor de valgte navnet coldplay, for lydlandskabet er lidt koldt. Også fokus på introspektive tekster, følelser osv. lidt ligesom the man who. Lyden og vokalen minder mig lidt om bastion lyden bare lidt mere stort og sådan Grand. Det er deres debut album og var lige på vej ud af indie scenen i London. Ellers har det en meget atmosfærisk og rummelig lyd også ligesom the man who et eller andet sted. Synes det var et super godt album og jeg blev virkelig positiv overrasket og Chris Martin er jo legit bare en certified legend.

When I first heard "Yellow" as a teen, I told everyone I wanted that played at my funeral.

I mean I didn't hate it like some people on here clearly did, but this is def not something I'm revisiting. This is the first album so far in this process that i skipped halfway through some songs. It did feel nostalgic tho as someone who grew up in the early 2000s which ups the rating a little bit bc love them or hate them Coldplay will always be part of the soundtrack of that era. Idk this just feels like music that i could find a better version of in other artists and a lot of the songs just DRAAAGGGED (hence why most of my top songs were the short ones). This album is incredibly vulnerable and introspective. This is Coldplay at their most intimate and emotional. They're so great at creating a mood that forces the listener to look outward and inward at the same time. Perfection.

Now, I’m the first person to rag on the shite that Coldplay have been churning out for the last 20ish years. But cast your mind back to 2000, when these fresh faces British boys took some jangly tunes to the top of the charts and charmed everyone on the way. This is a good album, especially for a debut, but just short of greatness for me. Key tunes: Don’t Panic, Shiver, Spies, Everything’s Not Lost. Yellow has been overplayed to hell so hard to appreciate these days, but it was a decent song in the first place before it got overexposed.

Another Coldplay album that is just fine. They are just inoffensive rock, and there’s a place for that, just not something I go out of my way to listen to.

I knew most of the songs on this album. I owned quite a few of the songs. My favorite Coldplay song, Shiver, is on this album. I own Yellow, Shiver, We Never Change, and Trouble. I’ve heard a couple of the other songs before as well.

Surprisingly not bad, I’d give it a 2.5 if I could. Around 3/4 of the album in though I did stop paying attention because it’s almost all piano and acoustic guitar. Coolest part was when it was over the next song was an acoustic version of deftones Be quiet and drive that I’ve never heard.

In 2024, a bunch of my mates went to Glasto. These are DnB heads, metal freaks and ravers. They don't like, or at least admit to, liking Coldplay. Yet they all said the best thing they saw all weekend was Coldplay. I feel that sums up their place in the public eye. They're actually a very good alternative rock band who accidentally became too big for their boots thanks to a handful of cheesy, kinda annoying number ones. If they were as big as say, stereophonics, they would not attract the same level of bitterness , mostly from stubborn middle aged blokes with iron maiden/oasis shirts. Well, the world's depressing enough as is and I don’t wanna grow up to become a cynical, grumpy fuck. This is very good music, as is every other album I've heard by them. 8.5 / 10 Best track/s: Shiver, Yellow, Don’t Panic

Not my thing

I began listening to Parachutes with really low expectations, and ended up pretty surprised. I've always lumped Coldplay in with other hyper-popular pop bands like Imagine Dragons into the genre of "coworker music", and while it's not nearly as bad as Imagine Dragons, it's still well within "coworker music" territory. That being said, it's not bad, I really like how the whole album has a really warm and nice tone, and while the songs aren't anything special, they're still pretty enjoyable. "Yellow" really exemplifies the warm sound well, and is actually a pretty song, even with his singing. "Trouble" was also a really good song, and definitely contends with "Yellow". While I'm not going to become a Coldplay fan anytime soon, I definitely don't think of them as bad as I did before. Favorite Song: "Yellow"

Probably would have slapped in 2000 but in 2026 its a little samey. A nice winter album though. Maybe I'm not depressed enough for this one right now? Yellow is an all timer though. I also really liked the final track "Everything's Not Lost" it felt like a refined Randy Newman song

I'm a bit fatigued from too much Coldplay over the years. But I'll admit this is a decent álbum, nicely arranged songs.

Second of two Coldplay records and this is the less offensive of the two. It's far from good, it's not even in the same country as good. But it's not as irritating as Rush of Blood so there is that. The hit song here is called Yellow but really it should have been Beige

Very relaxed chill songs, crazy to compare to what cold play sounds like in 2026

While this definitely isn't as terrible horrible no good very bad as everyone's saying it is, it's still not something I'd ever revisit.

Coldplay is a 3 of a band for me. They're harmless. They're non-confrontational. They're safe. They're the band you take home to your parents. They're not the band you remember after they're done.

Pretty great for a debut. Super familiar with the hits but I had never listened to this whole album. Not a fan of current Coldplay music but I really enjoyed this one.

Good album from Coldplay, but not my f as favorite. I think Yellow, Trouble, and Spies carry it. The other tracks are decent but Rush of Blood to the Head feels like a more complete album that was the evolution of the sound they were aiming for here.

People make fun of Coldplay a lot, but this is actually a pretty solid and good album.

Cold play yellow is a bop Aye pretty good didn’t think i woulda been into this as much as i was, I thought it dropped off but it ended up auto playing another Coldplay album and I got three songs in before I even copped on good stuff

There are actual people on the world who consider Coldplay to be the best band in the world. They are just so dull and boring. Granted they have a few half decent tracks on here but my god they just suck the very existence from my soul

Of course it's ridiculous to compare this band to the best in history, but that doesn't mean they're bad. This is a perfectly competent debut album. Best track: Yellow 3⭐️
