Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Another movie soundtrack! That's two in a week! Whatever, it's cool. Pusherman and Superfly - great tunes.
Smooth and timeless.
Easy listening soul, nothing really wrong with that
Another funky funk soundtrack. This one didn't resonate with me as much as some of the other ones on this list, but it was still a good time. Probably sounds best with a scratchy record player and a bottle of some golden colored liquor.
I think I'll need to come back to this one.
Soul lisèrgic i evocador. També polític. I una de les cimes de l'autor, gràcies a temes com el titular, 'Freddie's Dead', o la inicial 'Little Child Runnin' Wild'
Menevää funkkista, klassikoita nämäkin. Avausraita mun mielestä huippua tällä levyllä.
Cool songs, didn’t save any though.
Parhaimmillaan oikein viihdyttävää settiä
Hymyilyttävää settiä
Pretty good jams

Listened to on 3/18/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Little Child Runnin’ Wild, Freddie’s Dead Wonderful movie soundtrack - super easy to listen to with heavy jazz/funk influence

Sweet, smooth, funky, soulful groove
Funkalicious
Fav Song: Pusherman
Klassikkokamaa, mut ei Curtis-albumin voittanutta
Super mellow. Not sure how I feel about the falsetto in every single track. Nice groove, for sure.
I was expecting much more from this album. For any special reason, the cover and the Wikipedia background gave me some hope of a 70`s classical. Well, it`s not bad, but it`s not anything special too. Good album.
Decent listen
Some quality moments but not enough
Good
it is groovy
Solid album that likes a lot of cocaine.
Classic 70’s funk, and very listenable as well. One that I have never listened to be fore but will again, shame it’s only 40 mins long
groovy
Reminded me a lot of the Shaft soundtrack. It was pretty catchy. One recognized song
buen disco
I liked the instrumentals One day I’ll give an album a different score
It was cool. Not something I could see myself going back to a lot but it was a good experience. 7/10
Solid stuff.
It was ok
Loved pusherman and superfly.
Lovin this so far, his voice is amazing and the first song sounds like it could be in a james bond movie
Excellent.
felt like this was on for a solid 7.5 hours.
Big Curtis is back again so soon. Super Fly Jimmy Snuka rates this amongst his favourite albums of 1972.
Not my taste but very well done
Good old 70s with good big band accompaniment
Very jazzy Like the second song Low key Short album Too many instrumentals
okay woah first song playing and I like this. But after a while got a lil boring
Funky and catchy. Songs seems a little too similar for my taste.
nice funky music, not my style.
Cool, some nice grooves, not the kind of thing I would listen to a lot.
First time listening: 4/9 tracks liked While the first few tracks were bangin', nothing noteworthy to add to my library. Can appreciate its significance of changing the landscape of 70' soul. No songs saved.
I had some fun with it. "Think" and the title track were my favourites.
Great horns. Def 70's
definitely funky soul. Decent sound, not as funky as I'd like.
Schönes souliges Album!
Whaaaaaaaaaaat? Freddie’s Dead by Fishbone was a cover? World changing knowledge.
Very slick, nice beats and bass throughout and some interesting lyrics.
Funky funky
Not bad to listen to sometimes, but not a whole album
I have a hard time enjoying too much back to back soul music since the non stop barrage of high pitched male vocals wears on me. There are lots of good beats / percussion. I do like some of these songs and would like more if the vocals didn't sound like they were being sung by a castrated Italian boy.
I sort of bobbed along this album, it was pleasant, didn't know the song that apparently is really famous
Funk grooves. Loops huecos. Listen to Roots album. "Get down" Anderson .Paak
5
Solid
Slick as hell. Not as melodically appealing as an album like "What's Going On." 6-7/10
classic soul album. Used as the sountrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Freddie's dead, and the title track are nice.
false
It's time for Curtis Mayfield and his landmark album from the 70s - SuperFly. It's an easy thirty-six minutes and it goes down very smooth. It's not an album I can see listening to very often. It's the odd effect of having listened to so much music over the years that was influenced by this album. And so it sounds very familiar, though I'm not sure I've ever listened to this full album. From my reading, it's a very important album from the 70s and I do appreciate it. I'm glad to have given it the chance.
Some great tracks, but all good
07/03 Was okay. Funky
some good songs, I might even add a few. but overall not my thing. I wouldnt choose to play the album again
..
1. uuild - 2 2. man - 1 3. dead - 1 4. junkie - 2 5. love - 2 6. knouu - 2 7. thing - 2 8. think - 1 9. fly - 2
Fine. Falsetto. Groove. I get it, but no Marvin Gaye with the lyrics...
Eh! Groovy but not my fave.
Meh not for me
This is the soundtrack of a pretty poor film and almost comes off as self-parody. I can't think of a reason to listen to it.
This was kind of annoying and I wanted it to be over for most of it. Maybe I need to watch the movie to like the album more.
Certainly a classic of it's time. Not much here for me other than the title track which is great.
This has the same issues as the last Curtis Mayfield album. While the music is good, it meanders A LOT, barely developing in some songs. Additionally, his vocals leave a lot to be desired. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing.
2/5 Favorite Song: Superfly
One hit wonder
not my style
Was fine to have on in the background but I can't say I feel compelled to listen to it again, or watch the movie.
have 2 admit i haven't seen the movie. my favourite song is "freddie's dead" but i honestly prefer the fishbone cover bc i am a #childofmytime. got to "superfly" and bolted upright like WAIT. beastie boys sampled this. didn't know that!
It's very staple soul and funk. Nothing special.
One or two fun songs, but ultimately, what are we doing here?
Ok. ★★
Its nice but not that special to me
The sound of Blaxploitation movies. Interesting.
harsh
Pretty nice, but i dont like hear it, it just plays in a background and there s nothing that would catch my attention. A lot of samba suitable music but i dont like this type of music for dancing, sooo, no.
70s soul, funk soundtrack. 70s cop movie music.
4/10
Funcky music
Undoubtedly groovy. Probably would like it more if I'd seen the movie.
Saw this movie recently. Love ‘Pusherman’ and the title track (or ‘Freddy’s Dead’), but like most soundtracks, there’s a lot of filler.
Not really my thing, liked the titled track but for most of it I zoned out and it became background noise, some good moments but overall not as cohesive as I would have liked.
Decent. Fine.
Eh
Not for me, dnf on second or third track. Very 70s, lots about drugs
2026.02.13-02.14.
Fun enough album, and a better S/T than the Bollywood one from a couple of weeks ago. Definitely not my style though.
bit of a snooze
S'Ok film themetrack of a blackspoitation film of the 70's.
Not my favv Like the tune Good for a movie ig 2/5
Nice album
i wish i could do 2.5
I’m. Starting. To. Question. This. Website. Bro.
Era specific sounds. Fantastic melodies that are recognizable in modern popular songs that I didn’t know weren’t completely original. Some of the tracks are a bit repetitive without seeing the movie’s use of the soundtrack. 2.8/5.0
I was a vibing with the first song but everything kind of blended together towards the middle. Not for me.
A funky, enjoyable relaxing listen but not essential or life changing.
eh
This journey has taught me that movie soundtrack as albums tend to be weak albums on their own. If I was listening to this album as background music during movie of the same name, I would likely appreciate it more. However, while driving, it's just boring, and repetitive, and is capping off the worst weekend of my life. Favorite Track: "Think(Instrumental)".
I don’t know why but I just didn’t really get into this. Maybe I need to revisit it later
Mej
Favourite track: Pusherman
Incredible for its genre but not my vibe!
Was just 70s porno music
i like the core vibe but feel like it never went anywhere
2/5
Not my genre
Maybe I’d like this more if I’d watched the film? Or if I liked funk? This feels a bit like a ‘had to be there’ moment, it’s lost on me.
Pretty forgettable. Listened to this on Friday, and can’t think of anything that stands out about this.
I liked it however since I do not remember much of it (anything at all really) I have to give it only two stars. It is not the album’s fault necessarily though, I just had an oral exam to prep for so my mind was preoccupied.
It’s ok. Not my kind of music.
So and so. Soul punk? Idk
Too repetitive
Arguably better than the movie it was written for - actually there’s no argument there, that’s a fact, but not a terribly high bar either. Anyway, the Freddy’s Dead and Superfly tracks alone make the album worthwhile.
Curtis Mayfield and his falsetto, back once again. Similar feelings to what I felt on There's No Place Like America Today - the music's fairly good but the vocals wear on me. Overstays its welcome.
Not my genre of music but I can appreciate the music and in particular the percussion used. Not an album I'd listen to again.
Love Curtis mayfield. This album was okay.
Before I listened to this, "Move On Up" was really the only track from Curtis Mayfield that I knew. Unfortunately "Superfly" has not added anything that I would regularly listen to - not a bad album at all but a one-listen run through.
boring
Cozy stuff! When it hits, it hits hard. As a whole though, the album falls a bit flat.
Wenn man in der Stimmung ist
There are a few songs I know from I don't know where, that were instantly familiar like "Freddie's Dead", "Pusherman" & "Superfly". He's telling a story with the songs, but I've never seen the movie, so I wasn't fully tracking. It's a piece that's stuck in a certain time. It's got a funky flavor but his falsetto gets very old by the midway point. I lost interest, it's just one dimensional with no payoff for me. 2 stars
Meh
I guess I just don’t like the funk cause this didn’t do it for me. There were two fun songs for me but the rest was not my style
70s Jammy jams
Okay but not really my thing.
Someone got a wah pedal
i like that it’s tied to a movie and i also love curtis mayfield, he has such a beautiful voice and knows how to make amazing music.
*Very 1972 fly music. Fun and groovy, but wouldn't actively listen to this on my own. RATING - 6/10
A classic album that I find is just 'alright.
Nothing to write home about but a groovy listen!
Enjoyed it
It wasn’t anything special. Definitely didn’t need to hear this one
2’5
Pretty funky, enjoyed it fine, but the only moment I really paid attention was when I recognised the opening of Superfly as the sample used in Egg Man by the Beastie Boys.
Voice was off-putting
Not much variation between songs. Hasn't aged that well.
This wasn't bad but I didn't find it particularly good either. Nothing that I wanted to listen to again, which is generally not a good sign.
J - 2/5 Best Track - "Superfly" F - DNL
This is not really my music. But I listened to the entire album and it was OK, but would probably not listen again.
kinda boring/not for me Best song: Pusherman Worst Song: Junkie Chase
2+ Stars (6/15)
Feels like the music in a movie. Very doll.
Ga meg ikkje så masse
Not my thing, DNF 03/04/25
Basic R&B with a good vocal performance from Curtis Mayfield however it also felt very lacking and a lot of the songs sounded very similar with not one standing out to me. I liked the instrumentals in the songs though, the different instruments giving it that little something more. Probably wouldn't listen to again in a hurry though.
The songs are just kind of ok. Nothing really all that interesting. Moving along. Best song: Freddie's Dead
Not a bad soul album but I don't think this stands up on its own without the film which I'm interested in seeing. "Pusherman" top track..the rest is meh. I guess the title track is iconic and album makes the list for its popularity at the time...1.65.
Kinda weird to see a movie soundtrack on this list. It's pretty crazy that the soundtrack managed to out-gross the movie it is associated with. I'm not familiar with the film, but after listening to the album I can see why. I don't have much familiarity with the soul genre but it felt like it hit a lot of the signature sounds I associate with the genre. It's a pretty solid 30-minute soul album with a couple tracks that I can see applied to a movie. I don't expect I'll ever listen to this again but I didn't mind the 30 minutes I got. 2.43 stars
my name is john pork and im still pretty gay
Some funky songs, but on the whole disappointing and very dated.
First movie soundtrack of the list. Was it an album first and then a soundtrack? That would be cool. I don’t know what this is going to be but I’m hoping for a large degree of funkiness. If anything can top that suit and chops combo, I’ll be surprised. Let’s dive off the top rope into Super Fly. This is so boring. Is the intro of the movie an incredibly sad man who doesn’t really show it? A lot of hurt in the inside, but he goes about his normal life, going through his mundane tasks. You’re my mother and father? And a slur? The world is nestled in a blanket of infinity. Kept aloft by my delicate hand. Cradled in a ritual older than the concept of time. I’m the keeper of the codes. The axis upon which all things turn. I am omnipresent. I am… the pusherman. This was mid. Ooh funk. Good let’s let it die in the arms of this vocal and a repeat of the same three notes for the rest of the song. The swell of the strings or whatever sucks big time. This is background music. A small amount of jazz saxophone? Splendid. Genuinely splendid. This is a very lush quick instrumental break. The vocals let this thing down. The runs are boring, the tone is sappy and we don’t need them. If this is what can happen with a silent singer, we definitely don’t need them. This song was fine. The lack of variety is an issue again. I already feel like I’ve Been here for a long time. It’s just so boring. It’s so clear that this wasn’t meant to be listened to as a standalone track. The Pusherman is back. Was he ever gone? This makes me want to use drugs. Or not. Whatever the message of this song is, I want to do the opposite. My head hurts. It’s actually beginning to irritate me. Oh thank you Pusherman. You have delivered unto me an instrumental. It’s not a great one, but at least I don’t need to hear any sappy vocals and boring lyrics for 3 minutes or so. This sounds like SNL is closing for the night. Throw in that weird horn that appears on strange jazz releases and you’ve got yourself a (another) mid song. I wish this song was about Fijian professional wrestler/insane person Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. This is ending much the same way as his life did. In a murder trial where he was deemed unfit to stand trial for the murder of his girlfriend. Now THAT is how do a metaphor. Laboured and barely coherent and also a joke. Anyway. Another boring song. This is a soundtrack. Soundtracks are, again, popular with a group of people on the internet that I don’t understand. This album sounds like (brace yourself) it’s meant to have visual accompaniment. It’s flat, thin, and sounds half baked. There is some instrumental dexterity in there with some decent tones, but the end of the day, we’re reviewing albums here. As an album, this is missing a movie, and having never seen the movie, I was left to imagine what was going on with the Pusherman. At the end of the day, I won’t be seeking it out. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Junkie Chase
Sound of the 70’s. Some good iconic music.
Groundbreakingly funky, good arrangements.
Meh
This album is undoubtedly monumental and highly respected in the realms of funk, soul, and R&B. While it may not align perfectly with my personal taste, it's a must-listen for any music enthusiast.
Song: Pusherman i like the beat and stuff but I don ´ t like the lyrics because it says bad words and I don ´ t like bad words Song: Freddie´s dead i like the music not the lyrics because it reminds me of a robbery at the beginning. Song: Super fly i don´t really like this but it has almost the same beat as the others but they have different lyrics
This album is not my favorite because the instruments do not sound that good but they also do not sound that bad. It is also not my genre of music.
I think "Pusherman" is okay. I like the music but I don't like the lyrics. "Freddy's Dead" was the same as "Pusherman" for me because the music is cool but the lyrics are bad. "Superfly" is the same as the others, the music is great but not the lyrics. I do not recommend this album.
if you like drugs then this album is for you. I don't really like it because I don't really like his voice, all he sings about is drugs which makes it sound even worse. the background instruments are okay. overall I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I didn't like this album. I thought "Pusherman" was okay. I like the song itself but I didn't like the lyrics at all. "Freddie's Dead" sounds really weird to me. He is singing about someone dying but sounds really happy which doesn't make sense. "Super Fly" was in between the other two on how much I liked it. It was pretty bad but not the worst. Overall I would give this album 2 stars. I would not recommend this album because the song lyrics are not very good and they sound weird when Curtis Mayfield was happy while singing them.
Not my style but I enjoy it a lot.
This album was very chill, but not something I would listen to often. Too much falsetto turns me off as well.
Not really to my liking. I guess some of the instrumentals were okay.
Soul/funk/disco - not my thing.
Just can't bring myself to like this
Funk maybe isn't my cup of tea. Maybe not a favourite.
This album intrigued me. It was pioneering in its jazz/ sunk/ synthesizer sound which must have blazed a trail for future works. Initially, the lyrics disappointed because of their portrayal of violence, drugs and gang warfare. Further research highlighted Superfly made up a movie soundtrack about the same, which makes the content understandable. However, I won't be going back to it in a hurry.
Day 3! My first soul/funk album. I never was a big fan of this genre type, although it always has fun & groovy vibes. Some of the songs I enjoyed: 'Little Child Runnin' Wild' and 'No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)'. But others were very boring and dragged on — those being 'Freddie's Dead' and 'Give Me Your Love (Love Song)' Overall, great album, but not really my thing. 2/5
Not very special
Camminata a central park in una soleggiata giornata d'inverno (negli anni 70 ovviamente). Mi ha abbastanza annoiato Canzone preferita - pusherman
It was alright
Not for me
Not really my cup of tea
Somewhat similar to Isaac Hayes' Shaft, in that it is a funky soundtrack for a blaxploitation film I have never seen and it sound incredibly 70's. Key tracks: Superfly
Like the soul vibes. This wouldn’t be an album/genre I would really go out of my way to listen to again. Superfly was the only song I’ve heared before. <<< Pusherman, Freddie’s dead Superfly
8/9/24 Wasn't a big fan of this album, was too slow for me.
Great film music but not an album id return to for casual listening. (A bit preachy)
Not my favorite
Pretty good, should listen again
Nicht mein Geschmack.
Nett für nebenbei.
Not bad
not bad but kinda repetitve. 2 stars
An easy listening album
not my jam
Sounds like a movie soundtrack. Inoffensive and in the background.
It's kind of OK but it has a real OST vibe that's off-putting.
4/10 i liked the beat
Feels more like music for the soundtrack to a movie set in the 70's than something I'd ever listen to purposefully.
Excelent swing music, got me hyped for the movie. It's just not my personal style.
Not my kind of music
Superfly he is not.
Super Fun!
This album is undoubtedly monumental and highly respected in the realms of funk, soul, and R&B. While it may not align perfectly with my personal taste, it's a must-listen for any music enthusiast.
80/1001
Not my thing.
This album sounds so dated now that it's hard for me to give it a fair listen and get past the corny sound. I'm not going to come back to this, but I'm not mad about it
Classical soul & funk album. A bit more mojo would be good. And no broad violin Sound.
I'm a fan of Curtis typically, but this album was uninteresting. If I wanted to hear a movie soundtrack I'd put on the movie so I could see the context. 2.4/5 -> 2/5.
Pusherman is a bop kind of hard for me to get into, good background music but i wouldnt go for it ya know?
I'm really trying to like funk, i swear! But i can't. It's, good...? I think...
Lots O smooth funk. I finally learned where the Beastie Boy's "Eggman" sample is from! This record is aight, not really my style.
Movie soundtrack
Meh. Just so average, I don't even really have any comments. It's a movie soundtrack. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
It's OK, average for me
Maybe this was the shit in the 70s. Listening over 50 years later I'm just not feeling it.
Not that interesting sounding
Mir zu funkig
It's fine and think there are some good songs but not really my jam. Best song - Superfly
No soy fan del genero 🙃
Not my vibe.
Wow just like listening to the classic soundtracks from the 70s! Great voice and musicians. Not an every day listener for me...but a great look back at the quintessential 70s sound.
Möööööööööööööp 2 points
väldigt tråkigt
I don't feel this has aged very well
Might be an iconic soundtrack, but boring to listen to on its own.
Playing Catch Up on the Weekend #4 I thought I would like this more. I guess I thought I would recognize some of the songs, but even the Superfly theme didn't seem familiar. It's definitely a product of its time, and I enjoy a lot of the funk and blaxploitation sounds of the 70s, but I didn't love Mayfield's voice.
# Curtis Mayfield, Super Fly Released 1972. 2*. I love the talent on this album, but not the musical style. ## "Little Child Runnin' Wild" 5:23 2* Okay, it's blues-inspired. Good guitar, strings, vocals. Not something I'd jam out to though. ## "Pusherman" 5:04 2* Provocative, but not my style. Like the bassline. ## "Freddie's Dead" 5:27 2* Not my style, but the band and Curtis are really talented. ## "Junkie Chase" (instrumental) 1:36 2* Not my style. ## "Give Me Your Love (Love Song)" 4:20 3* So familiar, definitely sampled by Snoop Dogg. ## "Eddie You Should Know Better" 2:16 ## "No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)" 4:53 2* I'm just not into light funk, I guess. ## "Think" (instrumental) 3:43 3* Fun little ditty. ## "Superfly" 3:55 3* Love the bassline and horns on this one. ## "Freddie's Dead (Theme from Superfly)" (single mix) 3:20 2* Same ranking as before. ## "Superfly" (single mix) 3:08 3* Still the best song on the album.
Some really good tunes here, but nothing particularly for me.
It is decent - but with film soundtracks the music is there to fit the film, not necessarily to fit the album, the artist, or the overall vibe. I think some of the album could have been trimmed. I recognised Superfly. Didn't do anything for me I'm afraid.
Nice album to listen while driving.
I can appreciate it. The funk and such. Not really for me though.
Interested to see the movie. Interesting theme of working for yourself, not the man, and not doing drugs.
Not my type of music.
This is definitely of a sound that helped define the 70's. For the most part I'm not a fan of soundtracks. They have a different flow and vibe. I never saw Superfly so I have no visuals or context to frame what this music was trying to achieve though I can surmise and I get it. On the basis of whether I liked it vs musical achievement this was OK but it's a one and done for me.
- jazzy, funky - his voice is pretty high but clear and nice - is it like a movie soundtrack? - tunes don’t have much direction, not memorable
I'm your pusherman!
not my thing
Idk if it's fair to call a 70's album cheesy (presumably it didn't feel that way at the time) but that's what i hear now
it was fine
70s soul/funk; not for me. 5/10
Ga meg ikkje så masse
I wasn't a big fan of this album when it first came out, and I'm still not a fan.
I got bored after a while 2/5
Understated vocals, and tbh, unstated songs. There's no denying Curtis has the delivery. His falsetto lulls you in to what you think will be a sweet, innocent song. The issues addressed here are bleak. It works in the lyrics, but the songs weren't strong enough to carry it for me. Disappointing.
His other album is a little better
A good funk album. I recognized a couple of the riffs as being sampled in songs. Think instrumental samples in nobody’s perfect by j Cole.
Boring 70s wash. 2/5
boring
okkk
Kein Totalausfall, aber eher langweilig.
Great funky sound and love Mayfield’s voice but all kind of blurs into one and kind of ends up sounding samey. Ended up as background music rather than holding my attention
It’s a little unusual to be listening to a soundtrack rather than a typical album today. I’ve also never seen the film Superfly, so I’ll be listening to the music without the intended context of the movie. Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Superfly I’ll be very up front and admit from the start that I’ve had the worst day in a very long time today, and as much as I try to listen to each album without any bias, there is likely to have been some impact by this when listening today. Moving on to my thought, this album seemed fine to me but nothing outstanding. After finishing listening, there are no riffs that stuck in my head and I couldn’t actually tell you how any of the songs went. No songs sounded bad, but nothing was great either. I’m sure people that love funk might enjoy this, but it didn’t blow me away.
Mediocre.
A bit too dated, too repetitive and uninteresting. Pusherman stood out, but the rest just blends together. The 70’s porn music aesthetic is there at times, but it is only a slight amusement.
Really wanted the movin on up album. This wasn’t it.
Groovy dude
Probably one of the better choices for a soundtrack addition to the list, but it's no "Minecraft - Volume Alpha" by C418, let's be honest. "Saturday Night Fever"? Never heard of her. This is strictly a "Minecraft - Volume Alpha" household. This album seems like mostly average soul to me, sorry. Not a huge fan of soul, although I did enjoy "Give Me Your Love".
A fun experience.
Listened before? N Well, it was better than the first CM album. Still not great. Instrumentation was good. Songs added to playlist: Pusherman
this type of music has never been my style so it wasn’t my favourite. It wasn’t great and the style was just eh
This movie sound track stuff is well made and well played, but still leaves me cold.
It was alright. Nothing too too memorable about it, and not much variation from song to song. Definitely a few good songs but too few and far between to make the album worth more listens. 4/10
Chill music, might use it as relaxed background music some time. Also, I think I'd known Pusherman before, so I liked that song most.
nice!
Meh
Listened to the album, start to finish. Dreadful
