I respect the vision of the album and it has some good tracks, but this is nowhere near the best in Mayfield’s discography for sure.

Yeah, this is groovy and cool, but I wouldn't necessarily listen to this album on the regular. Most of the tracks sound very similar, but that's what soul and funk was in the early 70's... horns, drums, groove. It was definitely the first time I listened to this album in its entirety, and I did dig it. And you can’t deny the crunchy guitar licks and replay value on Pusherman and Superfly.

The music is okay. There's some pretty rad saxophone. Musicality is alright. It's hard for me to get past the exploitation part of "blacksploitation" I guess or maybe I just didn't listen to enough times to feel it. Not a favorite.

First 2 tracks are fire, great grooves.

Very much cut from the same cloth as Shaft, it's a very cool soundtrack but not sure I'm up for listening to it separately. Muted wah pedal sounds so good the first time but there's diminishing returns and I wouldn't listen again. Found the love song/cocaine song names very funny and it was a fairly pleasant experience, 2.5.

Highlights: Junkie Chase, Give Me Your Love (Love Song) Hearing the title track so many times over the years has unfortunately spoiled my listening experience. It’s a shame, because the backing band is excellent! Mayfield’s lyrics illustrate a dark reality, noticed a narrative arc. Tracks 1-3 could have been shorter or changed into an instrumental. Haven’t seen the movie, so this review may change after watching it. Verdict: 6/10

Really liked the instrumental songs but didn’t love his voice too much

This sounds real smooth, damn A bit repetitive, some songs (the ones with vocals) are nice for active listening, overal a great background album.

I can appreciate the songwriting and musicianship that went into this album, and it's evocative of a time and place in American society and culture. I am not a fan of Curtis Mayfield as a singer; there's not a ton of range in his voice and it's a little high for my taste. Solid soundtrack though.

Fun, but there are better albums in this genre.

I thought I was gonna like this one as this is usually the kind of music I like, but surprisingly didn't quite hook me on. Maybe it's better with the movie. 3/5

Superfly is a legendary track. But the album doesn't blow me away

Some of these tunes are iconic, including the title track, "Pusherman" and "Freddie's Dead". Buried in my brain was the factoid that they were from a soundtrack album... hadn't really thought about it. Cool musical style, and quite possibly one of the more significant soundtrack albums in terms of exposing a larger group to a music style that they might not have otherwise heard.

This went unexpectedly hard. I don't typically like old soul but Curtis was saucin on the track. Also listening to old music like this makes you realize how much today's hip hop is built on the backs of soul music (Chance with Pusha Man).

Really cool funky album with priority on instrumental. It had some ups and downs, however, with moments that were not up to the same level as ,say, the first few songs that were really good. (74%)

Hearing this filled in a lot of gaps for me, this has clearly been an influence on a lot of artists and I hear many homage if not samples throughout.

I need to watch the movie, but honestly i think for the "greatest soundtrack of all time" it's a little meh

The album felt smooth, relaxing. The recommendations that were soon to follow lead me into a multi-hour relaxing experience of smooth funk.

3/5. Idk why this doesn’t work for me. Maybe the voice? The significant use of sax?? Idk.

It starts as it means to go on - a perfect soulful voice against a great sounding rhythm track. Then it starts to repeat and repeat. Each song a two chord four bar repeat and it becomes really difficult to keep listening. The instrumental gives a welcome break as they actually put a few chords and a melody into it then it’s back to the repeat. It’s fantastic but I can’t listen to a whole album of it.

Highlights: "Little Child Runnin Wild," "Junkie Chase," "Give Me Your Love," "Think" It's hard to tell from another generation where this stands in the development of soul into funk and disco. It's six months after Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," three months before "Talking Book." Years after Sly and James Brown made their mark. But it's not quite like any of those records. It has a lot of Green, his gentle style of vocal delivery, his arrangements and some of his harmonic sensibilities, but it moves at Brown's fierce pace. To risk stating the obvious for a film soundtrack, it's also much more dramatic than those influences, which sends it somewhere closer to Wonder at times. Have to come down agreeing this sounds like an important landmark among a few shifting genres.

Second blaxpoitation soundtrack I've had. Not as good as shaft, but less instrumental tracks and didn't drag on as long which is good. Fairly okish album, not bad but definitely not good. Will probably never put on again, 2.5*

Oh wow, two Curtis Mayfield albums in a row. Crazy odds. I liked this better than There's No Place Like America Today...this one had more funk to it, so it was a little snappier. I can see why this was a big hit when it was released.

Soul is not my favorite genre. It tends to be too slick for its own good, rely on really stupid lyrics, and feature far too much saxophone. Lucky for me, there's a lot more funk than soul in the mix here. Sure, it's overloaded with horns, cheesy strings, and falsetto wailing... But those groves, man. So good. It's hard to hate it with much intensity. But, when it's all said and done, I was really glad it was all said and done, you know? A little bit of this goes a long way and "Superfly" bangs the same (admittedly funky) gong over and over from needle drop to lift and it gets old quickly.

I usually don’t listen to this style of music at all but it surprised me. It’s really funky soul music with great vocals and instrumentation. I wish there was a little more variety and it’s still doesn’t hold my attention as much as other genres but for what it is it’s very good.

This album I liked mainly because it was very groovy and had a lot of soul in it . And from a instrument perspective, all of us worked well together and had great basslines. Overall : I liked it but I don't think I would listen to it alot of the time

Isaac Hayes’ Shaft and Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly are two classics of progressive soul and they came out within a year of one another. Ah good times. This is great. Standouts: Super Fly, Freddie’s Dead, Pusherman 3.5/5

I a fan of Curtis Mayfield, and there are so many iconic songs here, but I don't really like soundtracks being on this list.

Movie soundtracks in general are meh for me. Some nice soul and funk but, overall it's not doing it for me. Pusherman is the best track though, I've heard it someplace else though.

It all kind of blended together to be honest, but it was still really good. 'Think' was my favourite track.

This is an album whose importance is hard to understate. OG pimp hustler tunes with the luxurious 70's horns and strings alongside the screaming guitars and sometimes wacka wacka pornt track guitar vibes. Tabla style drum beats. Give me a cane, a glass of brandy, and a fur coat with my lowered Eldorado and I'll see you at the scene.

I liked it better than "Shaft."

Not much to say other than I wouldn’t mind listening to this again. Mr. Mayfield crafts music pleasant to the ear.

This album is great. Soul, funk, and smooth. The performances are superb. So tight yet somehow feels loose. Important album culturally, too. I'm glad it's getting attention here.

An enjoyable listen but not one I find myself thinking “I need to listen again” while listening. Stylistically pretty broad while still feeling cohesive. Some great riffs and breaks.

This album has great vibes and instrumentation, but the songs aren’t that strong or memorable in my opinion. While this certainly captures a time and I understand the influence and how groundbreaking this was, it’s more like a historical document rather than something I want to throw on again and again. I think “Curtis” has much better songs that stand the test of time. Also, I know from his time in the Impressions his voice has more range than this - sort of annoyed by the falsetto throughout but that’s just me.

Freddies dead- blunt and forthright👍 Junkies chase- instrumental Give me your love- generic in all aspects Eddie you should know better- For a song presumably tied to the movie, it works as a standalone👍 No thing on me- very smooth track👍 Think- fine instrumental superfly- The instrumental is very good on this track, overall catchy song👍 This didnt draw me in as much as i hoped but still very solid. 3/5

03/09/2022 Curtis Mayfield – Superfly 3/5 While I was greatly surprised by the first album I got of Curtis (There’s No Place Like America Today), this one feels a tad less good. The funkier songs, although they have its charm, lack a bit of the sentiment. Don’t get me wrong, the music is top notch, with a great production quality; and I feel like they could increase the quality of the film they are featured (and that I’m now curious to watch). The instrumentation is very good, and they gave the music a very “complete” feeling and the character necessary to be a soundtrack. However, it has connected slightly less with me, and the songs are a bit of a mixture on my head. Favourite tracks – • Junkie Chase (Instrumental): great energy, feelings and coolness. The two instrumental tracks on the album are the best ones. • Think (Instrumental): very good melody conducted by the horns and a slick guitar. • Freddy’s Dead (Theme from “Superfly”): this song is clearly single material. The coolest of all the tracks, with the best intentions and feelings.

Good songs. Need to be in a super relaxed mood to listen to the album

I made the mistake putting this on while walking to get my son. Strutted the entire way. What has it done to me? Did my kid just call me Daddio or is that just this album messing with my mind.

In this little challenge I have decided to rate the albums by how much I enjoyed listening to it, with less consideration of the historical context. And I think that Superfly by Curtis Mayfield is one of those occasions, where that additional context might have been crucial in understanding the album. The album is a soundtrack to the movie Super Fly, neo-crime piece in the genre of blaxploitation. The songs are incredibly groovy and inspiring combination of funk and jazz (with a strong emphasis on funk). Really consistent album altogether, with similar musical themes and couple of instrumental pieces, necessary for a soundtrack. I believe the album starts very strong with song Little Child Runnin' Wild. This song is the epitome of the whole record - very thick and catchy beat, a bit desperate, but fitting vocal of Curtis and nice jazzy accompaniment. Song is very easy to listen to, with your legs moving to the beat subconsciously. After the song, the quality of the album takes a small drop. Songs are still pleasant and catchy, but forgettable. I have listen to the album few times and to be perfectly honest, I don't remember anything special about rest of the record. It is a very unique stop in my musical journey, but not one that I will be coming back to often (if at all).

Another funky funk soundtrack. This one didn't resonate with me as much as some of the other ones on this list, but it was still a good time. Probably sounds best with a scratchy record player and a bottle of some golden colored liquor.

I have a hard time enjoying too much back to back  soul music since the non stop barrage of high pitched male vocals wears on me. There are lots of good beats / percussion. I do like some of these songs and would like more if the vocals didn't sound like they were being sung by a castrated Italian boy. 

I sort of bobbed along this album, it was pleasant, didn't know the song that apparently is really famous

It's time for Curtis Mayfield and his landmark album from the 70s - SuperFly. It's an easy thirty-six minutes and it goes down very smooth. It's not an album I can see listening to very often. It's the odd effect of having listened to so much music over the years that was influenced by this album. And so it sounds very familiar, though I'm not sure I've ever listened to this full album. From my reading, it's a very important album from the 70s and I do appreciate it. I'm glad to have given it the chance.

This is the soundtrack of a pretty poor film and almost comes off as self-parody. I can't think of a reason to listen to it.

This was kind of annoying and I wanted it to be over for most of it. Maybe I need to watch the movie to like the album more.

Certainly a classic of it's time. Not much here for me other than the title track which is great.

This has the same issues as the last Curtis Mayfield album. While the music is good, it meanders A LOT, barely developing in some songs. Additionally, his vocals leave a lot to be desired. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing.

Saw this movie recently. Love ‘Pusherman’ and the title track (or ‘Freddy’s Dead’), but like most soundtracks, there’s a lot of filler.

Album ging komplett an mir vorbei, leider nicht im positiven Sinn. Lief eher nebenbei, daher vielleicht nicht komplett fair, aber so nur 2 Sterne.

Era specific sounds. Fantastic melodies that are recognizable in modern popular songs that I didn’t know weren’t completely original. Some of the tracks are a bit repetitive without seeing the movie’s use of the soundtrack. 2.8/5.0

I was a vibing with the first song but everything kind of blended together towards the middle. Not for me.

A funky, enjoyable relaxing listen but not essential or life changing.

This journey has taught me that movie soundtrack as albums tend to be weak albums on their own. If I was listening to this album as background music during movie of the same name, I would likely appreciate it more. However, while driving, it's just boring, and repetitive, and is capping off the worst weekend of my life. Favorite Track: "Think(Instrumental)".
