Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Funky funky.
Definitely fun. It really puts u in that cheesy 1970s action movie kind of vibe.
I appreciated the length and the vibes. I don’t think it has enough to be one of our top albums, but this is another one of those types of albums that we want on this list! Some songs on here sampled on other big songs. Cool!
Nice little soul album, never knew there was a movie tied to this album. Best songs are "Freddie's Dead" and superfly. The rest were not that memorable. Strong 3.
Some good songs and some ok songs. But it is a soundtrack.
buen disco, pero no es variado.
enjoyable but I probably won't come back to it. very cinematic
Favs: "Little Child Running Wild", "Junkie Chase (Instrumental)", "Freddie's Dead"
Nicht schlecht *** 1/2
I have to admit that I zoned out of this one for longer than I would have liked but I still found it really relaxing. It had a distinctive soul sound and the tracks were all pretty unique. Would totally recommend to any soul or funk enjoyer.
It's definitely a soundtrack, but it's also a good standalone album. You can feel the 1960s of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" give way to 1970s funk with instrumental stops along the way. I sort of want to see Super Fly now.
I recall a number of these songs from 70’s radio. They were hits at the time but feel dated to me now.
Little Child Runnin’ Wild // Pusherman // Think // 3.5/5
A pretty good album with social commentary, especially related to drug use throughout. None of the songs really standout for me, but the album is very smooth and listenable.
It was good. Not fantastic but it really sets a good mood. 7/10
Very cool. Nothing I'll ever listen to again, but it was a fun listen.
Quick hitting retro funk.

Fav: Think - Instrumental Least Fav: Pusherman
Classic soul, brother man.
Good soul and good funk, but honestly not the MOST memorable for me. It was consistently solid, but I didn't pay attention to any individual song. Which is wild, because Move On Up is such a GOATed top tier song.
I really liked the vibe this album gave off. I could see it being a really good album to have playing at a party or something. That being said, I don't feel like it kept me engaged or that any single song is worth writing home about.
super duper groovy
A little dated, but still pretty nice in spots.
Great album. Curtis' voice paired with the music. Brings me back to the 70s.
Cautionary tale told over soulful tracks
Wish this straight instrumental...... Awesome music
Groovy
Oooh eer! This sets a cool mood and runs with it. So much classier than others of this genre.
Nice and easy listening Slow dance music opening
A LOT about how drug sellers are bad. It's weird to hear from a future perspective the lyrics paired with a laid back feel. These lyrics would be over more angry or melancholy music even a decade later.
I really enjoyed the funkiness but I personally did not have much to relate with to draw me in completely. Glad I listened and did enjoy the funk!
Ok Soul/Funk music, maybe even great for enthusiasts, but nothing special for me to find here.
5 / 10 Funky, Soul. Me ha decepcionado un poco me esperaba una voz más profunda. He escuchado discos mejores de este estilo.
2 or 3 melting bangers, lots of filler - makes it difficult to score, but Superfly is worth 2 stars on its own
superfly makes me super high think youre superman but I’m a super guy fortune favours the bold but youre super-shy Im hungry and thirsty at the same time so it’s soup-or-die
Pretty good. Smooth and funky
background music
Good album, but a bit repetitive, maybe just not my cup of tea personally
Gorgeous, smooth, soulful, cool. Everything I would expect from Curtis Mayfield.
‘70s Blacksploitation Soul was never really my thing but I have always loved this album. It was a movie soundtrack. But what I always appreciated (aside from the constant samples from this album littering Paul’s Boutique) is it was a concept album that told a story without a movie. I never saw the movie. I know exactly what is going on. Key tracks: Superfly (of course!) and Pusherman. I’ve listened to this album a few times when I want to feel extra swaggy, and I probably will continue…
This is probably a 3.5 star album. I don't like it quite enough to push to 4-star territory. It is obviously a historical and deeply admired album. I like the tracks Superfly, Pusherman and Little Child Runnin' Wild. The instrumental bogged this one down plus "Freddie's Dead" is a dud. Anyway, cool, landmark old school 70s funk jam.
The theme song for Superfly was pretty good. everything else wasn't bad, but just not really my style.
Decent background music. I love this type of music but not a huge draw for me. It’s just something to put on while i drive or work on something.
Tv advert generic
Nice but not in my taste.
Great vibe. No complaints
Den er fed nok. Jeg lyttede til den mens jeg var ude og løbe. Den første sang var den der greb mig mest. De andre var også cool.
An oldie from back in my day. It struggled to be contemporary at the time, which made it as dated as Hawaii 5-0 today.
I like the sound, but I wasn’t grabbed by any of the songs.
Beatiful
funk[2]progressive soul[3]. Rollo.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Chilled 70's vibe.
Curtis mayfield is a musical artist but with significant emphasis on the artist part as he is able to layer music unlike most people in this world. The deep and rich sounds contrasted with the complex soundtrack provide an enjoyable listening experience and really make it easy to love the R&B style he produces. This is great and almost a four star album. 7.7/10
Little Child Runnin' Wild has an exciting ensemble of instrumentals that feel underused. The strings, trumpet and sax show a lot of promise and are not fully developed (yet?). Pusherman dials these instrumentals further back but adds a very fun drum line. Freddie's Dead comes back stronger but as with all tracks on this record it feels like something, like a solo, is missing. Junkie Chase has amazing instrumentals but is not fully developed as a full song. Give Me Your Love is a nice enough song that sounds like background music (which it is for a movie?). The next songs are nothing special until one of the hits on the album "Superfly". This song is lacking something extra as well but is probably the strongest track on this record. The entire project feels like it was held back by being used for a movie. 3/5
70s funk. I only knew the title track, and it’s the best one by a wide margin. Wished I liked it more.
Rating: 3.5
A great album for listening to while making dinner. Lots of soul
mid
Great album!
Funky AF. Kunne meget bedre lide den her plade end Isaac Hayes' Shaft. Den her virker meget mere nede på jorden.
funky and fun, if you're looking for that. which i slightly was
Funky. 3/5
Average soundtrack album. Could’ve picked a better Mayfield disc.
Goofy, that classic 70s black funky sound. Never seen the movie. Now I know where Freddie's Dead by Fishbone is from. Also pusherman is definitely covered in an old Eminem song.
Great album for a warm summer day with the windows down.
COOL COOL COOL
C'était chill
overall great production, some of the instrumental songs slowed the album down. lyrics were strong throughout
It was fine but won't listen to it again, just not my style
3+
Cool as fuck
Good album Standout songs: Pusherman Freddies Dead Superfly
smooth dude Fun Fact: Dette var temaet til brutterns russebuss.
Музыка не запоминается, но она, в целом, приятная. Прослушал и забыл.
Okay album. Lots of "soundtrack" music.
Good funk album from way back when. I give it 3.5 stars.
Having not seen the movie, the music itself was good and Mayfield can sing with a soulful voice. I liked the upbeat songs about getting out of the drug lifestyle and bettering oneself.
Surprisingly good.
It was pretty good, I dunno I didn't really love it but it was much better than yesterday's album (although that was not a very high bar). I liked the lyrics on a lot of the songs, they were very interesting and very much got your attention. It sounded really nice overall, just not really much my style.
was nice background music. not my normal style but compared to yesterday's Korn, it was giant improvement.
Great songwriting, landmark album for Dylan and for rock in general. Not easy to listen to, harmonica is always too high in the mix. Not an album you can really enjoy listening to without knowing the backstory and context.
Bit repetitive but nice
Nice listen, but not something I would seek out
Taking the Wah-wah to the limit! Funky music, with excellent production and structure. Lovely blend of soul and complex story telling. For me it just doesn’t have any lasting power, not to say it’s bad.
good for an OST
I enjoyed this funky album, “Pusherman” is a classic.
Pusherman rules
Not really my type of music, from a time I don't often listen to. It was enjoyable but a little samemy from song to song. I did like that this was the origin of Pusha Man. I didn't expect to be listening to a Soundtrack for a blacksploitation film on my first day but here we are.
It was a fun 70’s album
This album was 100% baby-making music.
It's ok. Didn't know what to expect whilst also knowing exactly what to expect. Decent enough!
Blast from the past, it was ok
Creo que me está gustando el bluss. Música relajada con buen ritmo.
Groovy and catchy.
Nice, old school mais un peu repétitif
Listened to like 3 times. Definitely enjoyable.
Kinda cool.
Super funky! Love the use of bass with strings accompanied by the horns! Super fun listen. Having not ever seen the movie I can picture it from the music. Will listen to occasionally but not a frequent listen. 3.5/5
A generous 3. Never really caught my attention and it's almost as if he's whispering for large parts.
Some nice bits in here but it is a soundtrack at the end of the day, and it sounds like one. Cool licks here and there but that's about all I can say.
Funky
Reminds me of a Tarantino soundtrack. I’m not mad at it.
Great funky took me right back to the 70’s!
A bit disappointing, really
Nice album
FUN!
Nice
I like some of the instrumental parts on some of the songs (especially the drums/percussive elements)
Funky, interesting use of instruments. Sounds like something that would make it into a Tarantino movie.
Nice album, interesting sounds, but forgettable
Groovy not my groove
Loved the substance of this album. A lot of meaningful and hard hitting topics. I also enjoyed the instrumental parts of every song. The singing was difficult for me to understand (I have significant hearing loss) due to the pitch. Overall this was a solid album. Unfortunately I am not a huge fan on the genre.
Kept one song. Soulful.
Entertaining rhythm to it. Not my usual cup of tea but enjoyable.
2 all time classic tracks
Didn’t listen
Definitely got a cool sound. Not one I'll go back to much though. Also don't love the vocals.
Fun and funky. I like the story telling aspect. Made me feel like roller skating.
It was good, I just got kinda bored halfway through
Good soul album. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood so I’m giving it 3 stars. Lots of layers
musik att ha i bakgrunden men inte så mkt mer.
Skön funkig skiva. Men som vanligt, inget märkvärdigt.
An enjoyable jazz-driven LP with some funk influences. As with most soundtracks on here, I do think I'm lacking situational context for the tracks which would help mesh them together into a more cohesive whole. That being said, this was a fun change of pace and something I'd be willing to watch Superfly for to understand a bit better
It was fine, just not my favorite genre.
So, so. Wouldn't have it in my music list.
Really liked Pusherman & Freddy's Dead.. solid album
7/10 Highlights: Freddie's Dead Little Child Running Wild Pusherman Junkie Chase
Fun background music, has a very 70s feel. Lyrics are pretty deep. Superfly is the stand out track. Pretty short album and weakens in the middle. I’d probably give it a 3.5 if we could. It doesn’t rise to the level of a 4 for me so I’ll go with 3.
1. 3.5/5 2. 4.5/5 3. 3/5 4. 3/5 5. 3/5 6. 2.5/5 7. 3/5 8. 3/5 9. 3.5/5 = 3.22
Not a bad album but not great. Pretty mellow vibes with sexy sax coming every now and then but nothing to make love to.
Very funny slick and cool it makes me want to watch the movie. The instrumentals on the first track especially and then throughout are so slick. It’s like funk that doesn’t sound dated.
A house mate hammered this album for a while. It brings back memories of the funky share house lifestyle.
Awesome soundtrack
It's a classic
Really smooth and fun to listen to. A lot of the songs have a similar kind of style which made a lot of the songs blend together. Haven't seen the movie but can imagine this being a killer soundtrack. Favorites: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Think - Instrumental,
Very funky album with a couple of really well known songs. Enjoyed it.
First listen Saved 5/9 Top track: Pusherman
Some great soulful vocals and funky jams on here as we'd expect - the instrumentals are by and large ignorable. The magic of Curtis Mayfield is his voice - I get it's obviously a film soundtrack, but you cannot hold a candle to Freddie's Dead and the title track with an instrumental.
The music on this album is incredible. Great bass and keyboard playing, as well as the horns (such a necessary and great addition). So much funk and soul. 3.5/5 Will probably listen again
просто норм не зацепило, но качество чувствуется
классное переплетение кино и фильма
3.8 - Solid album and some great songs, felt a bit too similar though
Not bad. First soundtrack album I’ve heard on this list so far. I’m just not very into funk music. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Pusherman 2. Superfly 3. No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)
Would give 3.75 if it was possible. Good album, but it feels like it's meant for a movie and not the other way around.
Culturally significant.
Es un género que la verdad tampoco me interesa mucho, y este no es una excepción. Al menos tiene cosillas para vibrar.
listened 2x
I respect the vision of the album and it has some good tracks, but this is nowhere near the best in Mayfield’s discography for sure.
ekat kymmenen sekuntia mielenkiinto aivan huipussaan, jonka jälkeen pojan keskittyminen halpeni päivän askareille..
Nice
cool and funky.
Yeah, this is groovy and cool, but I wouldn't necessarily listen to this album on the regular. Most of the tracks sound very similar, but that's what soul and funk was in the early 70's... horns, drums, groove. It was definitely the first time I listened to this album in its entirety, and I did dig it. And you can’t deny the crunchy guitar licks and replay value on Pusherman and Superfly.
The music is okay. There's some pretty rad saxophone. Musicality is alright. It's hard for me to get past the exploitation part of "blacksploitation" I guess or maybe I just didn't listen to enough times to feel it. Not a favorite.
First 2 tracks are fire, great grooves.
Very much cut from the same cloth as Shaft, it's a very cool soundtrack but not sure I'm up for listening to it separately. Muted wah pedal sounds so good the first time but there's diminishing returns and I wouldn't listen again. Found the love song/cocaine song names very funny and it was a fairly pleasant experience, 2.5.
Didn't mind this at all, but probably not quite my thing Think the first film soundtrack we've had? Pusherman was the best track imo
Dope
Funkiger Soul-Soundtrack ohne großen Höhen und Tiefen. Groovt. 2,5
Groovy 3/5
5/10, decent but will probably never listen again
Eh
好神奇superfly之前有点过绿心……
Me gustó. Es una banda sonora y tiene claramente esas vibes, mezcla jazz con 'suspenso de película e histrionismo'.
Iha menevää sielumusaa. SuperFly 1972 - leffan soundtrack.
good 7/10
Highlights: Junkie Chase, Give Me Your Love (Love Song) Hearing the title track so many times over the years has unfortunately spoiled my listening experience. It’s a shame, because the backing band is excellent! Mayfield’s lyrics illustrate a dark reality, noticed a narrative arc. Tracks 1-3 could have been shorter or changed into an instrumental. Haven’t seen the movie, so this review may change after watching it. Verdict: 6/10
Really liked the instrumental songs but didn’t love his voice too much
This sounds real smooth, damn A bit repetitive, some songs (the ones with vocals) are nice for active listening, overal a great background album.
I can appreciate the songwriting and musicianship that went into this album, and it's evocative of a time and place in American society and culture. I am not a fan of Curtis Mayfield as a singer; there's not a ton of range in his voice and it's a little high for my taste. Solid soundtrack though.
Fun, but there are better albums in this genre.
Super funky. Great storytelling, which is expected from a soundtrack.
Eh
First time listening? Yes Was I familiar with the artist/band? No Had I heard any songs before? No Did I feel the need to stop listening or skip songs at any point? No this kept my attention the whole time. Would I listen to this again? Not sure If I still bought cds, would I want to buy this? Probably not What was I doing while listening to this album? Relaxing Scrolling social media Any favorite songs? I liked all of them equally, none really stood out
I thought I was gonna like this one as this is usually the kind of music I like, but surprisingly didn't quite hook me on. Maybe it's better with the movie. 3/5
Better as a soundtrack.
He loves cocaine
Not familiar with the film, pretty solid as a soundtrack but I don't know if I love it as a standalone. I see why it's famous but not quite my taste
Superfly is a legendary track. But the album doesn't blow me away
Some of these tunes are iconic, including the title track, "Pusherman" and "Freddie's Dead". Buried in my brain was the factoid that they were from a soundtrack album... hadn't really thought about it. Cool musical style, and quite possibly one of the more significant soundtrack albums in terms of exposing a larger group to a music style that they might not have otherwise heard.
funk[2]progressive soul[3]. Rollo.
Funky fun blacksploitation drug movie music…
Not terribly bad, would probably listen again as background music.
Classic. Commentary and funk? All in one? Better than the movie.
Mixed bag. Strong start, not for me genre wise.
This is one I have listened to periodically over the years. Many great tracks on this one. Not a classic for my taste, but a pretty good one.
Funky
Motown lovesongs for Sundays
good length pusherman
It was a smooth album. Good to listen to this one time.
This went unexpectedly hard. I don't typically like old soul but Curtis was saucin on the track. Also listening to old music like this makes you realize how much today's hip hop is built on the backs of soul music (Chance with Pusha Man).
3.5
Really cool funky album with priority on instrumental. It had some ups and downs, however, with moments that were not up to the same level as ,say, the first few songs that were really good. (74%)
Hearing this filled in a lot of gaps for me, this has clearly been an influence on a lot of artists and I hear many homage if not samples throughout.
I need to watch the movie, but honestly i think for the "greatest soundtrack of all time" it's a little meh
Great!
much better than the last. super funky , downloaded 1,5,7,9
Good soundtrack, I'll certainly watch the movie!
Not my usual vibe, but I had a good time with this 3.5/5
Funky beats
No es lo mío aunque ha resultado interesante reconocer influencias de Phil Lynott
I like the style. Funk = yay, but not super keen on this particular soundtrack
good...not my everyday choice
I wish I could give half stars. I would give this album a 3.5 stars. Pusherman carries this album for me. Kurtis Mayfield has other great songs that aren't on this album
The album felt smooth, relaxing. The recommendations that were soon to follow lead me into a multi-hour relaxing experience of smooth funk.
- This is one where the title perfectly describes the music - The groove is infectious - Solid 3.5
- funky - great voice - really enjoyable listen - 3.5
rock progresivo no es. un buen ejemplo de su género.
3.75
3/5. Idk why this doesn’t work for me. Maybe the voice? The significant use of sax?? Idk.
It starts as it means to go on - a perfect soulful voice against a great sounding rhythm track. Then it starts to repeat and repeat. Each song a two chord four bar repeat and it becomes really difficult to keep listening. The instrumental gives a welcome break as they actually put a few chords and a melody into it then it’s back to the repeat. It’s fantastic but I can’t listen to a whole album of it.
Highlights: "Little Child Runnin Wild," "Junkie Chase," "Give Me Your Love," "Think" It's hard to tell from another generation where this stands in the development of soul into funk and disco. It's six months after Al Green's "Let's Stay Together," three months before "Talking Book." Years after Sly and James Brown made their mark. But it's not quite like any of those records. It has a lot of Green, his gentle style of vocal delivery, his arrangements and some of his harmonic sensibilities, but it moves at Brown's fierce pace. To risk stating the obvious for a film soundtrack, it's also much more dramatic than those influences, which sends it somewhere closer to Wonder at times. Have to come down agreeing this sounds like an important landmark among a few shifting genres.
Funky and kinda cool but not as good as the Isaac hayes shaft album from earlier, loved Freddie’s dead, no idea the Fishbone song was actually a cover!
Soul progresivo, funk. Ni fu ni fa.
Grand, very easy and nice to listen to.
The instramentation here is phenomenal. Not a big fan of funk but I did recognize a few tracks. Overall this was really good.
More soundtracky than I thought it would be. Great funk grooves. Lyrics right out of the 70's. Enjoyable, but has aged somewhat.
Oooooh nice and funky, without falling into the stereotypical blaxploitation funk sound
Ok
Groovy
Funky and smooth
jaha varmasti on parempi elokuvan kontekstissa...soundträkki kräkki nimittäin.. rattoisaa menoa..Toinen ääniraita… Man käytettynä näytteenä. give me your love
Funk Soul Classics include: "Pusherman", "Freddie's Dead", and "Superfly".
Second blaxpoitation soundtrack I've had. Not as good as shaft, but less instrumental tracks and didn't drag on as long which is good. Fairly okish album, not bad but definitely not good. Will probably never put on again, 2.5*
Oh wow, two Curtis Mayfield albums in a row. Crazy odds. I liked this better than There's No Place Like America Today...this one had more funk to it, so it was a little snappier. I can see why this was a big hit when it was released.
Soul is not my favorite genre. It tends to be too slick for its own good, rely on really stupid lyrics, and feature far too much saxophone. Lucky for me, there's a lot more funk than soul in the mix here. Sure, it's overloaded with horns, cheesy strings, and falsetto wailing... But those groves, man. So good. It's hard to hate it with much intensity. But, when it's all said and done, I was really glad it was all said and done, you know? A little bit of this goes a long way and "Superfly" bangs the same (admittedly funky) gong over and over from needle drop to lift and it gets old quickly.
I usually don’t listen to this style of music at all but it surprised me. It’s really funky soul music with great vocals and instrumentation. I wish there was a little more variety and it’s still doesn’t hold my attention as much as other genres but for what it is it’s very good.
Good album. Old school - OG!
This album I liked mainly because it was very groovy and had a lot of soul in it . And from a instrument perspective, all of us worked well together and had great basslines. Overall : I liked it but I don't think I would listen to it alot of the time
2.5/5
Soul. Kinda weird album, seems like a movie soundtrack
Not bad. Chill. I should watch the movie soon. + Little Child Runnin' Wild + Freddie's Dead
This was good background music to get my day started to.
Isaac Hayes’ Shaft and Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly are two classics of progressive soul and they came out within a year of one another. Ah good times. This is great. Standouts: Super Fly, Freddie’s Dead, Pusherman 3.5/5
IK YO OUSHAMAN
not like
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, I adore his vocals and mixing in this, I need to see the actual film now! Favourite song: Track 2 - Pusherman
Nice, cool
Not a big fan of the genre I guess. Enjoyed Think (Instrumental).
Che groove!
Alright. Not the classic it's made out to be. Gimme Stevie Wonder over ol' Curtis M any day.
I a fan of Curtis Mayfield, and there are so many iconic songs here, but I don't really like soundtracks being on this list.
Movie soundtracks in general are meh for me. Some nice soul and funk but, overall it's not doing it for me. Pusherman is the best track though, I've heard it someplace else though.
It all kind of blended together to be honest, but it was still really good. 'Think' was my favourite track.
It was goood
Soul. Funk.
Great storytelling to work with the film, and this is the epitome of street style from the era.
This is an album whose importance is hard to understate. OG pimp hustler tunes with the luxurious 70's horns and strings alongside the screaming guitars and sometimes wacka wacka pornt track guitar vibes. Tabla style drum beats. Give me a cane, a glass of brandy, and a fur coat with my lowered Eldorado and I'll see you at the scene.
I liked it better than "Shaft."
Not much to say other than I wouldn’t mind listening to this again. Mr. Mayfield crafts music pleasant to the ear.
Enjoyed this album. But I don’t think I’d be listening to it again
Enjoyed this one! Nice easy listening album with lots of good vibes!
Good, a lot of talent here
Great funk but I don’t like funk.
3.5
The album had a lot of funk. A couple of the songs were recognizable. It was a relatively short album. It was alright.
Good and Groovy! Just a fun listen.
This album is great. Soul, funk, and smooth. The performances are superb. So tight yet somehow feels loose. Important album culturally, too. I'm glad it's getting attention here.
An enjoyable listen but not one I find myself thinking “I need to listen again” while listening. Stylistically pretty broad while still feeling cohesive. Some great riffs and breaks.
Funky and enjoyable. Some real grooves
This album has great vibes and instrumentation, but the songs aren’t that strong or memorable in my opinion. While this certainly captures a time and I understand the influence and how groundbreaking this was, it’s more like a historical document rather than something I want to throw on again and again. I think “Curtis” has much better songs that stand the test of time. Also, I know from his time in the Impressions his voice has more range than this - sort of annoyed by the falsetto throughout but that’s just me.
Joda, mye kult.
It was a nice and smooth, funky album. None of the songs really leapt out at me, but "No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song)," since it's been sampled a couple times at least!
Disco is fun and kicky, but not always what I want to sit and listen to at length. That said, this is really good!
Not keen on soundtracks in general. Too much unimportant fillers. However the actual songs here are great.
Couple of good songs but a lot of the kind of filler you'd expect on a soundtrack album. Always really liked his voice though
Good example of 70s funk. The title track is he most recognizable off the album. Overall decent album.
Fantastic percussion, and trumpets.
Cool, smooth, dont particularly care for the subject matter but was very enjoyable.
ja men det svängde väl ganska bra väl. eller? jooo. men det gjorde det, ju. väl?
Sehr cooler Jazz, Blues. Gefällt mir gut!
As Matt would say, "It's fine." Overrated, though.
Groove. Funk. But also lavish production. Has the feels.
Egg Man!
Fresh as the day it was made
Little child runnin’ wild- Solid setup by disillusioned youth👍 Pusherman- POV from dealer. Softer than I would expect, vocals in chorus quite sinister which is fitting. Freddies dead- blunt and forthright👍 Junkies chase- instrumental Give me your love- generic in all aspects Eddie you should know better- For a song presumably tied to the movie, it works as a standalone👍 No thing on me- very smooth track👍 Think- fine instrumental superfly- The instrumental is very good on this track, overall catchy song👍 This didnt draw me in as much as i hoped but still very solid. 3/5
Nothing toointeresting
Good, solid funky soul.
gezellig
Man blir ju sugen på att se en blaxploition från 70-talet när man hör denna.
Decent album featuring music from the motion picture, pretty dated but a cool 70s sound.
Good tunes, not my fav style
03/09/2022 Curtis Mayfield – Superfly 3/5 While I was greatly surprised by the first album I got of Curtis (There’s No Place Like America Today), this one feels a tad less good. The funkier songs, although they have its charm, lack a bit of the sentiment. Don’t get me wrong, the music is top notch, with a great production quality; and I feel like they could increase the quality of the film they are featured (and that I’m now curious to watch). The instrumentation is very good, and they gave the music a very “complete” feeling and the character necessary to be a soundtrack. However, it has connected slightly less with me, and the songs are a bit of a mixture on my head. Favourite tracks – • Junkie Chase (Instrumental): great energy, feelings and coolness. The two instrumental tracks on the album are the best ones. • Think (Instrumental): very good melody conducted by the horns and a slick guitar. • Freddy’s Dead (Theme from “Superfly”): this song is clearly single material. The coolest of all the tracks, with the best intentions and feelings.
Good songs. Need to be in a super relaxed mood to listen to the album
I made the mistake putting this on while walking to get my son. Strutted the entire way. What has it done to me? Did my kid just call me Daddio or is that just this album messing with my mind.
Funky, chill; good to put on for hanging out. Never seen the movie though.
Ok album; superfly being the best song. Sounds a bit samey
Really enjoyed Pusherman, Give Me Your Love and Superfly. From time to time, it's noticable that this is a soundtrack. But I really enjoy the overall mood.
Chill but not exciting enough
A soul funk treat.
Good funk but not my style
Lekkere vibe van Curtis, behoorlijk stijlvast vergeleken met zijn bekende nummers. Daardoor misschien ook weer wat voorspelbaar.
Dit heeft de groove die ik gisteren bij Stevie Wonder miste.
its soul its groovy not my style though but still alright
The bass itches my brain just right
In this little challenge I have decided to rate the albums by how much I enjoyed listening to it, with less consideration of the historical context. And I think that Superfly by Curtis Mayfield is one of those occasions, where that additional context might have been crucial in understanding the album. The album is a soundtrack to the movie Super Fly, neo-crime piece in the genre of blaxploitation. The songs are incredibly groovy and inspiring combination of funk and jazz (with a strong emphasis on funk). Really consistent album altogether, with similar musical themes and couple of instrumental pieces, necessary for a soundtrack. I believe the album starts very strong with song Little Child Runnin' Wild. This song is the epitome of the whole record - very thick and catchy beat, a bit desperate, but fitting vocal of Curtis and nice jazzy accompaniment. Song is very easy to listen to, with your legs moving to the beat subconsciously. After the song, the quality of the album takes a small drop. Songs are still pleasant and catchy, but forgettable. I have listen to the album few times and to be perfectly honest, I don't remember anything special about rest of the record. It is a very unique stop in my musical journey, but not one that I will be coming back to often (if at all).
Very chill, super enjoyable, good for like dinner with friends and you wanna throw music on
