I really enjoyed this too. I love Superfly. That whole album is very nostalgic, funky and reminiscent of the 70s which is our era. 3/4* ?

Mediocre.

Wow, Sly & The Family Stone one day and then Curtis Mayfield the next. Pretty fine one-two punch I’d say, wouldn’t you? Curtis is a little more refined and polished than Sly, but both are super interesting, inventive, and just plain groovy. Love this. 4 stars.

The triplet flow on those initial bongos are amazing. Mayfield assembled a really tight band for this album. No pieces are out of place. This album is great, there’s nothing at all to complain about.

Never heard this before, but I'm glad it was listed here. Really nice 70s sound.

A bit too dated, too repetitive and uninteresting. Pusherman stood out, but the rest just blends together. The 70’s porn music aesthetic is there at times, but it is only a slight amusement.

Man. Just like. Its so good. Curtis's voice just scratches the right parts of my brian while the smoothest instrumentals play with him. Amazing.

I like this, it is great. Top quality from start to finish, lovely production and important message. I’ve just never been a fan of Curtis Mayfield, his tone doesn’t do it for me. Glad I listened though.

Not only is this the greatest soundtrack - ever - for a film, it also works by critiquing the film itself through its lyrical themes. How often do you encounter something quite so meta that's also a funky, soulful and positive commentary on the art its ostensibly meant to complement? A masterpiece.

03/09/2022 Curtis Mayfield – Superfly 3/5 While I was greatly surprised by the first album I got of Curtis (There’s No Place Like America Today), this one feels a tad less good. The funkier songs, although they have its charm, lack a bit of the sentiment. Don’t get me wrong, the music is top notch, with a great production quality; and I feel like they could increase the quality of the film they are featured (and that I’m now curious to watch). The instrumentation is very good, and they gave the music a very “complete” feeling and the character necessary to be a soundtrack. However, it has connected slightly less with me, and the songs are a bit of a mixture on my head. Favourite tracks – • Junkie Chase (Instrumental): great energy, feelings and coolness. The two instrumental tracks on the album are the best ones. • Think (Instrumental): very good melody conducted by the horns and a slick guitar. • Freddy’s Dead (Theme from “Superfly”): this song is clearly single material. The coolest of all the tracks, with the best intentions and feelings.

What a funky little record. I've always been curious about Curtis Mayfield albums and it sounds chill and clean. I'm not too equipped to comment on funk and classic R&B but I'm glad this one connected with me.

Really enjoyed Pusherman, Give Me Your Love and Superfly. From time to time, it's noticable that this is a soundtrack. But I really enjoy the overall mood.

Such a damn good funk album.

I'm glad this was our weekend album. There's just... so much. So many layers. Organ, hand drums, regular drums, distorted bass (and surely that's a whammy bar on the bass), spitting fuzz guitar, clean guitar with a wah (of course), any number of horns and strings, and... is that a fucking harp? Yes, yes it's a harp. And that's just the first minute of the first song. And it feels like they're all played by individual humans. All playing little bits and pieces, but also coming together in unison often enough that the songs feel like songs, not just jams. Somehow, even with all that instrumentation, it has a real live feel. There are mistakes here and there, and the vocals aren't the strongest, but I don't find they distract from the experience. They give it an energy. It feels alive. You're not listening to a product that has been painstakingly constructed and polished over months in a studio, you're in a room full of great musicians having a good time. The off the cuff feeling of the album comes with downsides. No Thing On Me feels cheesy, both lyrically and melodically. The wah in Give Me Your Love sounds like someone is strangling a duck. Both songs could have used more time in the oven, but I think more overall production time would have dulled some of the rawness that gives the rest of the album it's energy. So I'll take two (relative) duds if it gives me 7 songs that are brilliant, rich without being busy, dirty without being muddy, somehow simultaneously groovy and contemplative. I'll be listening to this for years to come.

What a fantastic album. The tracks strike a perfect balance between jam and focused song, so they feel nice and loose, but not too much so. The lyrics and vocals were a step up from the very repetitive Chic album. Even though they weren't hitting every note perfectly, it kinda fit the tone of the album. Definitely going to check out more Curtis Mayfield!

First time listening to this album, and this really is brilliant. A funk/soundtrack masterpiece.

Never herd of this or the film it’s soundtracking… The album opens with little child runnin’ wild it’s really good the rhythm is perfect backing the song ( especially the brass instrumental works)! For a very upfront song about drugs pusherman is very decent the highlight is the drum work for sure, fairly sporadic and tribal sounding ( like hitting well tuned pots and pans). The funk really shows in Freddie’s dead it’s an amazingly put together tune (but not something that I would go out of my way listening to). Side one end’s with the short instrumental track Junkie chase, It sounds like a chase track to be fair ( quite a classy one) but still a chase. Then we have Give me your love ( love song) it’s cool (one of the best) but it takes a little too much time to get going really. Eddie you should’ve known better is a bit of a quality drop, I mean the lyrics are good but the instrumentals were a bit more like lift music. No thing on me ( cocaine song) is really solid, fine the instrumental work isn’t the most interesting on the album but it’s a good track about cocaine dependance. Then we have the penultimate track think ( instrumental) it’s nice and calming nothing particularly special but stupid great. The album closes with the title track superfly and it closes everything perfectly, if it weren’t a soundtrack/ concept album I probably would’ve closed with something different but for what it is it’s great. It’s a great album with no tracks that are god awful and unlike most concept albums I actually got a grip of the concept and what a great way to do it! A definite 4/5 (would be a 5 if there were less instrumentals and other great songs to fill in as it’s a little short).

In this little challenge I have decided to rate the albums by how much I enjoyed listening to it, with less consideration of the historical context. And I think that Superfly by Curtis Mayfield is one of those occasions, where that additional context might have been crucial in understanding the album. The album is a soundtrack to the movie Super Fly, neo-crime piece in the genre of blaxploitation. The songs are incredibly groovy and inspiring combination of funk and jazz (with a strong emphasis on funk). Really consistent album altogether, with similar musical themes and couple of instrumental pieces, necessary for a soundtrack. I believe the album starts very strong with song Little Child Runnin' Wild. This song is the epitome of the whole record - very thick and catchy beat, a bit desperate, but fitting vocal of Curtis and nice jazzy accompaniment. Song is very easy to listen to, with your legs moving to the beat subconsciously. After the song, the quality of the album takes a small drop. Songs are still pleasant and catchy, but forgettable. I have listen to the album few times and to be perfectly honest, I don't remember anything special about rest of the record. It is a very unique stop in my musical journey, but not one that I will be coming back to often (if at all).

Songs started to sound same after a while.

Thursday morning. Nearly the end of the week. Lounging on my velour recliner for a moment of contemplation, it's a sunny day and the light is streaming through the window highlighting the dust in the air. Rising out the seat, I glance in the mirror and my oversize collar is on point with the brown and yellow earth tones in the tie I picked out earlier. Aviators on and quickly check the moustache - nice. I leave for work, climb into the car and Curtis plays in the background on the 8-track. Sunlight glints on my glasses and I'm feeling the beats, one arm out the window as I drive. It's going to be a good day.

Yes! I haven't listened to this in so long. I went through a short blaxploitation film kick in high school that introduced me to 60s/70s soul music. This album is a masterpiece, even if the film really wasn't.

5/28/2022 - ALBUM #121 Today's Album: "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield - This album is the accompanying soundtrack to the movie of the same name, Superfly and wow does this album make me want to watch the movie. This is an extremely lively funk concept record that closely relates to the plot of the movie and really does a good job at representing the flow of the story. The Story from what I can gather is about the black community dealing with the rampant drug use and poverty that is brought on by cooperate America and widespread systematic oppression. There is this constant reference to a character known as the Pusherman who seems to be a drug pusher that recruits and abuses young kids who act as drug pushers and only cares about profiting off of the drug crisis within the black community. There is a story arc of the titular character, Superfly, throughout the album as he battles with drug addiction, loss, love, and eventually sobering up as he pushes against the oppression of the Pusherman. The social commentary and the lyricism with which it's delivered is extraordinary and I find it incredibly impressive how well this album can tell it's story without feeling bogged down or uninteresting. It is most likely due to it's greatest strength, which is it's fantastic instrumental performances and stellar production. The sound of this thing is so crisp and centered and direct. The bass sounds absolutely fantastic throughout this entire record, the percussion is going absolutely ham, and the inclusion of the big-band brass accompaniment make it feel like a really epic crime movie, which it is. I imagine this movie is elevated a lot by this soundtrack because each song feels like you can think of how it would be placed in the movie alongside the action, romance, or whatever else. However, it also just stands alone as it's own thing so well and I honestly might not think it's made for a movie if you didn't tell me. The singing isn't always super great, but a lot of the performances are and the rest of it is just so great it makes up for any inconsistencies in the vocal. Overall, this album is a really great way to get the story of Superfly without ever having to watch it. It's densely packed, socially aware, and all around super fun and engaging. Give this one a listen if you like classic 70s movie soundtracks or just want to experience a really cool concept album. Easy listening soul, nothing really wrong with that

Probably one of the better choices for a soundtrack addition to the list, but it's no "Minecraft - Volume Alpha" by C418, let's be honest. "Saturday Night Fever"? Never heard of her. This is strictly a "Minecraft - Volume Alpha" household. This album seems like mostly average soul to me, sorry. Not a huge fan of soul, although I did enjoy "Give Me Your Love".

Cool as hell

Another funky funk soundtrack. This one didn't resonate with me as much as some of the other ones on this list, but it was still a good time. Probably sounds best with a scratchy record player and a bottle of some golden colored liquor.

I think I'll need to come back to this one.

A fun experience.

Awesome funky danceable and groovy. When Pusherman and Superfly hit - it’s instant joy - and the soundtrack is consistently paced and of a perfect length.

Man, some of these songs sounded so 70s, but in a GOOD way. That funky vibe just sounded so damn good... I knew "Freddy's Dead" because Fishbone had covered, but the rest of this was just as good (although "Pusherman" was a little cringe-y, lyricwise.). The first song, sounded like it was alternating measures of 4/4 and 5/4. That off-kilter beat made for a chaotic sound. But it works really well. Short soundtrack, but I wanted to listen to it again almost right away. That's when you know something is pretty good. But I am going to ding it a star for "Pusherman," but it is definitely going on my list of stuff to look for.

Super slick. Great lyrics and beats. Mayfield carries the story as he moves from one song to the next. I really enjoyed the first three tracks - Little Child Runnin Wild, Pusherman, and Freddie's Dead - and the final, title track. I'm stopping just short of a 5 though. I don't know why. Maybe the songs in between those others didn't quite do it for me as much. Maybe I still don't know what I'm talking about.

Un autre soundtrack…Pas super bon. J’imagine que c’est ce qui a popularisé l’artiste. Je n’aime pas le mix, particulièrement le traitement de la voix. Freddie’s Dead groove pas pire par contre. Donc pour moi, le seul intérêt de cet album est pour la pièce Superfly qui m’est mieux connue comme étant un sampling utilisé dans la pièce Egg Man des Beastie Boys sur Paul’s Boutique.

This is obviously great, but I think i prefer mayfield releases where he sings more because i love his voice so much. The instrumentals are lovely but they don't feel like the main draw for me in a mayfield release.

4/5 very enjoyable listen. I listened through twice and this is definitely not my sort of standard listening. However, I found it engaging and never got bored.

Was NOT expecting this to go so hard. Damn do “Pusherman” and “Freddie’s Dead” hit like a ton of bricks. I don’t fuck with soundtracks too much, but I’ll make an exception for this. The band is spot on and silky with Curtis softening the edges and enhancing those big orchestral moments with his glassy timbre – such a great voice. 4

Never have I ever felt more gangster than when listening to this album.

I'd heard the title track but nothing else here. Somehow it makes me feel nostalgic - it was released 12 years before I was even born, so that makes no sense. I guess it just gives me vibes of those cool sexy 70s, really sums up what they fed us of that decade in the 1990s. Like a best-of summary - all the cool funky disco bits, none of the mediocre shit that no doubt also existed, and it clocks in at a cruisy 36min. Either way, my life is that bit more complete now that I've heard this, and it's definitely going on the "listen again" pile. For this project, that's pretty uncommon. And for a movie soundtrack? Rare as rocking horse shit. Full marks are deserved. 5/5.

One of these classic soundtrack albums that is hard to listen to without thinking about the movie. In my memory, Curtis Mayfield had written stronger songs for The Impressions or his early solo albums. So 4* for the song writing and 5* for the sound. But now listening to it again, I think 5* also for the song-writing is more appropriate.

I first listened to SUPER FLY on an LP sometime in the 80s. At the time I was collecting a lot of older records and somewhere had run across a used copy of this. I would go on to listen to play list fairly regularly as I really liked its funky groove. Sometime in the 90s I purged my record collection, and Super Fly was one of the albums that left my collection. It is one of many that I regret having parted with. I did have a few compilation CDs that contained tracks off this album (Freddie’s Dead, Super Fly and Pusherman) and had let those tracks replace the album in my collection, but listening to it now realize that it really is better as a whole. I love hearing this again. It is remarkable how great every song is on this, as movie soundtracks tend to have a lot of weaker spots or dull instrumentals. This soundtrack is a fantastic album apart with or without the film.

I listened to his first album Curtis before this and I really, really loved it, definitely a 10/10 this album switches up the groove a little bit, which makes sense, this is a movie soundtrack, but it’s still really damn amazing both of these are 10/10s

this type of music has never been my style so it wasn’t my favourite. It wasn’t great and the style was just eh

Just a classic album on many levels - Curtis Mayfield's falsetto voice just works so well over the fantastic funk/soul music; hard to explain but there's a perfect balance between his voice and the music. Probably as a testament to how good and accessible the music is, so much of this album has been sampled over the years from artists as ranging as Biggie Smalls to Beastie Boys to Alicia Keys. I'll admit to not having seen the movie but even without ... this album really does *feel* like a movie; there's a great flow to it - starting with "Little Child..." and the classic final title track truly feels like an end credits. Those two are probably my favourites although I really love the instrumental "Think" - Curtis was also a masterful guitar player and the tone and melody on this track are gorgeous. Maybe the only drawback would be a general sameness that runs throughout but I think the shortness of the album (37 minutes) helps stave that off enough to keep it nearly perfect. An album for pretty much any occasion. 9/10 5 stars.

A sublime soundtrack with plenty of funky grooves, Latin hand percussion, cinematic strings, funky guitar (and bass) and swirling arrangements; the works. Loads of great tracks like 'Pusherman', 'Freddie's Dead', 'Eddie You Show Know Better', 'No Thing on Me' and 'Superfly'. I wasn't born in the early 70's but gee I felt like I was transported to that time listening to the album. Not to mention the icing on the cake; Curtis Mayfield's unique vocal sound. Superb in all departments. Now I need to go and watch the movie!

Ok - so this album is undeniably iconic. Pusherman is such a cool song. So perfect for Superfly, but just a great concept. All said and done, the album is so closely tied to the film and its subject matter and plot, that it's hard for it to stand alone. I can imagine a junkie chase without any effort whatsoever. It's genre defining and 70s funk to the max, and boom-chicka music was born.

Super Fly is a fantastic soul album by Curtis Mayfield for the blaxploitation film with the same name. I really like this kind of soul from the 1970s with a blaxploitation connection like Isaac Hayes (Shaft), Bobby Womack and the (other) artists from Stax Records.

I was expecting much more from this album. For any special reason, the cover and the Wikipedia background gave me some hope of a 70`s classical. Well, it`s not bad, but it`s not anything special too. Good album.

Yass! Pusherman is a truly wonderful track. Mayfield's voice layers superbly with an accompanying bassline from heaven itself and drums and bongos to keep you interested and focused on listening. Freddie's Dead has been part of my listening rotation for years. Superfly itself is just a masterpiece of funk. This is a film soundtrack. I mean, there's no doubt about it, it was written for a movie and it sounds like that. It isn't an album per se, but the quality of the music is just.. Well. Just listen to it.

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this but I was really bored.

I really liked listening to this, but it hasn't stuck with me. It feels like something is missing - and that something is the film visuals. Musically, it very much sounds like an accompaniment, something that is enhancing something else. And even though the album is was clearly doing a lot of the heavy lifting, it still feels like a soundtrack, rather than a standalone audio album.

It was alright. Nothing too too memorable about it, and not much variation from song to song. Definitely a few good songs but too few and far between to make the album worth more listens. 4/10

Certainly iconic, and a truly essential listen. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard this before, because the cultural references I now understand have increased 199-fold. Like all ‘70s funk, it’s tight as hell, groovy, vibey, and incredible fun, even though it’s drenched in social commentary. That said, also like all 70s funk, it’s so deep tied to its time, it almost feels too disconnected for modernity to latch on to, essentially as a white listener. That’s not a negative, of course, but it does make it harder for me to enjoy as purely as I’d like. It’s a record not made with me in mind, a soundtrack to a blacksplotation film about cocaine in black communities. I’m not the target audience. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy and respect it, and even groove along with it. Just that I need to sit with it a lot longer than one listen. That said, with an album this tied to cultural references even today, I think there’s enough for me to find on repeat listens.

Evocative, soulful, classy album that stands alone from the movie, worthy of inclusion in this list. Mayfield was never better than here and despite soundtrack music often seeming throw away and disposable, Mayfield’s narrative manages to touch on societal issues lending them added heft and weight. Just a great album.

I am pretty familiar with Superfly, and liked the soundtrack from it. But hearing it in a proper album format was really interesting; because it was really good. Like way better than I thought it was going to be. I've listened to this one 3 or 4 times at this point. I Really enjoy Pusherman, No thing on me, and Superfly. They are all really solid I gotta say.

Sublime instrumentation is the first thing that jumps out into my ears. Harp! Hand percussion! Funky electric something! The breadth and depth here is too rare in concept albums and basically unheard of in music for film. It's the obvious archetype of blaxploitation-in-sound, but also an opinionated text by Mayfield and something more besides. For one thing, each song expands beyond its length, providing a feast of material in a relatively concise album.
