Reviews (page 10 of 13)

groovy and fun. very enjoyable.

I was snowed in with this album on a long Thanksgiving weekend. Hard to dislike this one, although it feels a bit samey after a while. Kinda silly too, but fun.

Great, genre defining sound! But hard to escape or forget that this is a soundtrack to a movie. It doesn’t work quite as well as a stand aline listening experience. Could become a 4 (like after i watch the film), but for now it’s a 3.

Superfly certainly is very smooth. Very classy soul. 6.2/10

3.5 stars

Wow, this is about as black as early 70s music gets hahaha. I really like the music with the horns, bass, etc, it's about as cool as music gets. I just see bell bottoms, black shade sunglasses, and bling when I hear this. I can only handle so much instrumental so I do like when he sings. This was a fun listen. Don't need to listen to again, but glad I did listen to it. I'll take War over this for black / funk 70s music.

The Pusherman says this alblum with fullfill you Soul fix

I heard the song before, but I forgot how cool the song “Superfly” really is! All in all, a decent album today, but in its time, it was rock solid. One of those albums you need to be in a special mood to truly enjoy it. GOTTA LOVE “ Pusherman”.

Smooth funk that makes me wiggle and get into the bass.

This was cool and chill. For me, it was more Mediumfly than Superfly, but it was a pleasant listen!

The vibe is there. Soul really isn't the hardest genre to listen to, since it always has a certain groove to it. But besides the enjoyableness that stems from it's genre definition I didn't find much else in Superfly.

liked this one!! and then david and i talked about movies, because this was a soundtrack.

Blaksploitation, funk ja mitä muuta? Tällainen toimii minull.

This album is a smooth, soulful, funky, groovy good time with lyrics that paint a vivid picture of what it was like being black in the 1970s. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, but it's probably not something I'll return to frequently. I don't know, there's nothing in particular I disliked about it, but I guess I'm just not really in the mood for this kind of music right now.

cinema

Started out great. Visions of bell bottomed polyester suits, platform shoes, and crazy colorful sunglasses filling my head. The song was smooth and cool and funky. Second song was bringing us to the seedier parts of town - meeting the pusher man. I can dig it. And then we meet poor Freddie. Bit of a downer but still bobbing my head. Then either the novelty wore off or the music itself just got repetitive, but I lost interest. It was good, but don’t think I would listen again. And if I have to hear Joe say, ohhhh yeah one more time….

This album oozes with soul. The groove of the guitar, the dancing of the piano, the blasts from the horns, as well as the variety of different drum sounds are all complemented wonderfully by Curtis’ silky voice. Pick a track and it could easily have been included on the Shaft soundtrack cause it’s just that smooth. Glad to have experienced this.

An entertaining set of songs where the soundtrack format keeps it focused and moving. Mayfield’s falsetto vocals get tiresome after a bit and the overall album has some moments that are uneventful and others that feel repetitive, but there are also slapping moments of funkiness which make it great to get down to. Mostly, this album made me miss the terrible porn music of my teenage years!

Pusherman is slick

Premium Funk and Soul. A fun listen.

SuperFly 👌

Pleasant but didn't knock my socks off. Very strong 3, but would I go out of my way to listen to this again? I don't think so - I've heard this before. I've liked it in the past, we'll see... - Kinda just background funk elevator music. Feel like the whole album just passed by. Listening again.

great jazz. would listen again.

It's ok, but sometimes too soft, generally nice to listen to.

Grooooooooovy - cool disco with social commentary.

Actually pretty fun soul, which is surprising since I like basically nothing about this genre. There’s a bunch of funk elements, making this album overall more catchy and enjoyable for me. Still not my type of music, and there are some slower soul parts that I don’t really like, but this album is still good, I’d say. 7/10

Tendo a concordar com algumas reviews por aí na internet chamando o álbum de superestimado. Não é ruim; longe disso. Mas também não é tudo aquilo. Fiquei com vontade de ver o filme.

Decent funky, nothing too catchy

great voice. i had a good time picking out familiar hip hop samples. not sure how often i would go back to it but if some of these came on during a smoke sesh i wouldn't be mad at all

3/3.5. Good but I get tired of his voice. Think there are better blaxploitation soundtracks also.

miss when movie soundtrack albums used to be special and artistically motivated

This is not my genre of music, and the album really wasn't made for me. However this is smooth. It is soulful and poetic. Social Justice has never sounded so sleek and accomplished. I probably won't listen to this again, but I enjoyed the time I spent listening to it today.

Tää oli aika ”easy listening” ja ”panosoul”-osastoa. Hyvää soitantaa ja Curtis on taitava laulaja. Hän vetää korkealta.

A “spoiler alert” for those that haven’t seen the movie would have been handy. No point getting invested in Freddie’s storyline now.

I kinda wanna watch super fly to get a better feel for this work

This dude was just so cool.

Enjoyed this more than expected. A really cool vibe to the whole thing

I thought I liked this record more than I actually do. Hot record; bunch of bangers on here, and Curtis is the GOAT, but there’s some snooze here too.

High 3 - liked this a lot more than I thought I would.

A short one, but a good one! This was a pretty groovy listen.

Smooth soulful sounding soundtrack of the movie of the same name speaking about blaxploitation in the 70s. Best: Super Fly Worst: Junkie Chase - Instrumental 3.5 Stars

I can appreciate it and why it’s great. It’s just not my genre.

Funky, but I don’t love the concept since it’s a soundtrack album. Not sure how I feel about Blaxploitation as a genre.

nice around sound to chill and relax

This was OK. When it comes to funky soul, I prefer the tones of Isaac Hayes over the falsetto here, but the instrumentation was pleasant enough, I guess. Overall, this was pretty light on the hooks and felt largely forgettable, but it was short and didn't cause me any pain - and that's more than I can say for most of this list.

not bad but not for me

Classudo

Decent enough - not someone I’d look to explore further, but enjoyed nevertheless

Great sound but so sad

Funky fun little album. I recognized several samples used in other songs.

Pleasant listen

I don’t feel any particular way about this album. It’s was short and to the point. I suppose that’s all I have to add haha.

Oh so that’s where all those samples are from.

It's okay! Not entirely my thing, but okay! "Pusherman" "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly" were my faves

Came and went kinda

Well then.

Bra grejer. Skönt sound och galet bra produktion. Andra halvan var lite tråkigare än första

Purty good, don’t think I’d listen again but I enjoyed it quite a bit

Je ne dirais rien

Favorite Track: Pusherman

Day 2 in a row of rolling the soundtrack to a movie. Yesterday was Shalimar. What are the odds of that?? Really wondering how many movie soundtracks are on this list. I’m just going to repeat some of what I said yesterday. Notably, I bet I can guess the plot of the movie by listening to the soundtrack all day, and I feel it’s a requirement for myself to watch the movie at this point after listening to this. As far as Funk goes, this is just ok. I’ve heard some absolutely electric Funk albums so far, to the degree that they’re going to have to start living up to the ones I’ve already heard. This one specifically is nothing to write home about. It’s very average, yet still thoroughly enjoyable. Good mix of slow and faster paced songs. My favorite of the bunch is “Freddie’s Dead”. I’m always going to enjoy a good Funk album, and this is no exception, but I don’t think this one is going to stick with me much after today. That being said, I’m absolutely going to watch the movie. I love a good Blaxploitation flick!!

-oooo i liked this… definitely more than There’s No Place Like America Today even though i’m getting hesitant to compare artists’ albums like that -makes me want to watch the movie cuz this is so immersive. i really did feel like an African-American cocaine dealer the whole time i was listening -it’s not completely flawless, honestly i wasn’t a fan of some of the later songs which felt like filler in the context of the soundtrack itself but. ah well -Favorites are Little Child Runnin’ Wild and Pusherman

Very smooth

Meh. 3 stars.

It's fine, I guess. Certainly a better album than Shaft, but feels pretty by the numbers funk? Historically it sounds like it was a big deal but I don't think that makes it any better. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but the weaknesses of being a soundtrack and having to hew to a film means that it feels pretty one note.

Simmering cinematic funk with a social conscience, hugely influential on neo soul. It’s fine I guess.

Kinda fun

Uh. Soul yesterday, soul today. I don’t have a commonly defined soul so why this much soul. and this is somehow lame. 3/5

Cozzy - Rainy day

But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs to the community!

Nice solid soul album

Groovy! I like his voice! Some of the music felt a bit too repetitive even for me but i would check out more of his!

This is a wall of sound that pierces my eardrums. Not my thing. A complete crazed saxophone/jazz riff where all songs sound alike. Wanted to like it but the chaos hits me nowhere.

a nice surprise, chill, but funky, soulful and smooth, got out before it wore out, good listen

Wish I loved this all the way through because the first three songs are killer but still really enjoyed the ride, kind of a drag with the instrumental tracks in the middle but it's a film soundtrack so I guess it makes sense it won't flow the same as an album

Nice to listen, but not really my kind of music, probably won't get back to this one.

Enjoyable funk

Good soul album, soundrack for movie. Good vocals. However, the songs are too long and as a whole is bloated with alternative versions as usual in soundtracks. +Freddie's dead

It was really good. Surprised how much I liked it

So this is actually a movie soundtrack, but this is one of the few times when the soundtrack actually outsold the movie? Which is pretty cool. And it got Curtis Mayfield his future soundtrack work. It got added to the Library of Congress in 2019. Apparently Mayfield wrote it in a basement in Chicago and recorded it with a 40-person band at Bell Sound Studios in NYC. Super 70s groovy/funky. Instrumentals are cool, a lot of the "wah-wahs" sound like they would back the scenes in 70s cop shows where it pans out over the city. Someone said you don't even need to see the movie, just listen to the soundtrack and you already kinda know the whole movie" lol. The intro of "Give Me Your Love (Love Song)" is sampled in something, I don't remember what F. OVERALL: Not a bad listen. But maybe because I was listening while working, the second half starts to blend together a bit.

The album is okay. The production and arrangement are good, and the lyrics are much deeper than the usual blaxploitation soundtrack. But Mayfield's falsetto unnerves me after some time.

funky and satisfying but nothing to make me love it

Funky. I liked

decently fly

Cool album! Love Curtis Mayfield, but not his best album.

I liked the vibe, but no one track really stood out l. Probably because this is a movie soundtrack.

What a fun record. I didn't watch the film, but this soundtrack sounds fun. I enjoyed how easy the tracks are to listen to and just the general funk and soul in this record. Favourite Track(s): No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song), Think (Instrumental), Superfly Least Favourite Track(s): Eddie You Should Know Better

3.2 good but not that special faves: superfly

I've heard of this artist, and I've heard of this funky/soul soundtrack album for this movie I have never seen. Down to check this out. I love funk and soul. I am digging this. I may have to watch this movie now.

Mildly funky

It's pretty funky but I feel like I've heard this album a billion times before. Just inoffensive soul stuff.

This album feels very silly, in a good way.

Not bad for a movie soundtrack, but there's some inherent cheesiness that goes with fitting a bunch of songs to a single film's overall theme. Not something I'll be listening to again.

Some great songs and I’m sure it’s perfect as a soundtrack, but listening to some of the instrumentals on their own, didn’t really do it for me - some need visuals.

It's not for me

Heaters

It's giving corny

Let's get funk-i-fied! But not into the falsetto, which bumps this down to 3 stars

This album is nice but I feel the fact that it’s such easy listening may work against it slightly. The tracks are pleasant funk/soul songs but I feel many of the moments don’t stick with me beyond first listen personally. There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of the songs, they’re actually quite good but they just sort of float by and then they’re gone. Maybe this is because it’s a movie soundtrack? They’re not meant to take the forefront? Not sure. Fav tracks - All

Me encanta el funk. Me ha gustado el disco, no diría que me ha encantado, pero he pasado un rato entretenido pensando que era un extra de Jackie Brown.

En musikkstil som jeg er glad i. Fikk ikke helt fot på denne.

Fun, groovy fly soundtrack 3.5

Funky and powerful. Great musicianship, drums and percussion a highlight with some innovative rhythms. Surprisingly forward about social issues, especially drugs and the effect of Black communities. Pretty short, felt over before it began (and that includes some film filler music, as expected from a soundtrack).

Some of the songs on this soundtrack album have a certain amount of dramatic intensity (such as "Freddie's Dead" and "Pusherman") but the rest of them don't have as much impact outside of the context of the movie.

Love jazz, it was just a little repetitive and didn't feel very fresh by the end. I would've liked higher highs and lower lows, more variety between song, and more progression in the music. Overall pretty decent but with a good bit of things to improve upon.

it sounds good but i’m not really into it. soul is not one of my fave genres. i will say, this definitely works a lot better as a standalone soundtrack than “shaft” ever did. “shaft” was an absolute drag to get through and didn’t hold up on its own. at least “superfly” can stand on its own two feet without watching the movie. the title track is a banger.

Outside of the tracks 'Pusherman' and 'Superfly', I wasn't that into the album. Musically, it was class - loved the instrumentals, but I feel like context of the film would help the lyrics make more sense though... I'll add it to the list and maybe amend this review. 3/5 for now though.

I probably should have watched the movie instead of just listening to the album

Smooooth but would I listen again probs not

The lyrics are saying drugs are bad, but the vibes are saying do drugs and dance to this album. Definitely found myself bopping my head to this one. Love the instrumentals. Love the vibes. Very warm. Needed more time with it.

7/10, Definitie van standaard

really superfly 3,5/5

Another fine album. Not sure I can give it more than 3 stars.

Liked what I heard but probably won’t listen to it again.

Solid record. I enjoyed the vocal performances on Superfly, Pushaman & Little child. It could have been better but still good. 3/5

Chill tunes galore! Not so much memorable melodies though, but all in all, a nice landmark of the musical brand of this style of music.

Funky, but you already knew that. I know this is a soundtrack, but I think it stands pretty well on its own as an album. A strong 3 stars, I'd enjoy listening to it again.

Funky 70s sound track, really fun listen

C'était une bonne musique d'ambiance, mais je ne comprends pas trop le hype.

On peut y danser.

It's funky and mellow but only 2 or 3 tracks stand out to me.

Kenne den Film nicht. Hab wenig Beziehung zu Funk. Tut nicht weh 3/5

Smooooooth.

Starts off great and funky and cool and smooth. And stays that way, but you kind of lose interest a bit because the songs start to sound very familiar.

Really good Really smooth Great voice Easy listen

Cover. Is what it is. 1. Funky music. Love it. Don't hate the lyrics. 2. Ah, the Dr. Feelgood from back in the day! An ok song, really. 3. Main theme. Cool song. Still, just ok for me. 4. Instrumental. Very seventies. Cool jazzyness. 5. Not great lyrics but otherwise ok song. 6. Ok. 7. Good song. Works with the movie, specifically. 8. Instrumental. Ok. 9. Title song but not the main theme? Also cool. OVERALL: songs work for the movie but outside of that, most of the songs are just OK.

I feel meh about this one, it doesn't sound bad but it also doesn't do all that much for me

Pimp My Ride fontti levyn kannessa :D Letkeetä soulia ja funkkia. Parhaat: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Superfly

Funky music but I find the vocal mix a little off-putting. Curtis sings in such a soft crooning tone that it doesn't really cut through the music in the way I'd like. Maybe a little too understated. It's like a little quavering mouse trying to not wake the neighbours. Good example from the 70's funk/soul scene but not an album I'd listen to outside of this project and isn't one I'll be coming back to.

Not a lot of stand out but not unenjoyable either.

A fun listen through? Yes. Amazing album? Nah, but solid. Must watch the movie, and revisit the album and score at the end.

Interesting article about this movie. Curtis has a high, clear voice, and I am into the soul groove, but the story didn't quite capture me.

Just ok.

Groovey

Kinda fun but I don’t like the message!!!!

Well if I ever wondered if Anderson Paak got his inspiration anywhere then I have my answer

Jazz leggero, nulla di emozionante ma non terribile

Soundtrack albums are meant to be more ephemeral than this. Yet 50 years after Super Fly (the movie) has faded from collective consciousness, Super Fly (the soundtrack) is still standing as one of the most famous albums by one of the most famous Soul singers of all time. Curtis’ vocal chops are no less satisfying than on his debut. For me though he is lyrically sidetracked, or even hamstrung by the task of lyrically following the plot of the movie. His trademark social commentary is significantly dialled back. Instead we have peppy, groovy songs like Pusherman, where Mayfield provides a character analysis of a drug dealer. It’s iconic silly fun. Ultimately I don't think this sits as one of Mayfield’s top albums despite its legendary status. There are three killer tracks mixed in with some less exciting instrumentals and weaker narrative tracks.

It's definitely a vibe. I might appreciate it more if I see the movie. As a stand-alone album, it's still pretty good. 3.5

70s funk

Yes. Yes, it is Can get a bit too smooth, though. Favourite tracks: Little Child Running Wild, Freddie's Dead, Eddie You Should Know Better, Superfly

Soundtracks are a weird thing to include on this list. But I suppose since this music was created for the movie and it's not just like a compilation, that makes it a real album? Anyway, this record is fine - it's not going to change anyone's life. It's got some great grooves and good playing throughout but I'm sure there could have been another soul/funk album to include on this list in place of this one. That's said, I enjoyed listening to this today though I probably wouldn't ever play it again. 3/5

Pretty funky and smooth. I like the sound, but have no desire to listen to this again. It really does sound like a soundtrack to a film (which it is), rather than something to listen to on its own

pretty nice funky music.

Meh. I guess this was OK, barely remember it the next day.

This was technically a soundtrack but still great

Not bad.

5/10 Love the bass, appreciate the instrumentation and arrangements. But I get a bit bored and I don't get grabbed by the songs. Glad I heard it, but I'm unlikely to revisit.

A bit boring

Ikke så verst til å være soul

This was fun enjoyed the funk and a few banges Freddie dead , pusha man … it’s a bit below that top tier for me in terms of consistency but a fun time

I enjoyed it as background music as I tidied up around the house. This isn’t my preferred genre so I probably won’t seek it out again

Sounds like a classic. Hopefully today’s album is a little more modern though kinda tired of the oldies rn. 6/10

Funky.

Nostalginen. Nuorena oisin antanut varmaan yhden tähden enemmän. Nyt tuntui liian toisteiselta. Sovituksiin tuli kiinnitettyä enemmän huomiota kuin aiemmin.

Where are my platform shoes? The 70's live!

First Listen - Don't know/recognise any songs Not my usual taste of music Really like the call and response in 'No Thing On Me' Probably won't be coming back to this one

Funky as hell, cool as shit.

Pretty good. Like how the best song was last.

Interesting

The more of this list I listen to, the clearer it becomes to me that if a genre is called "psychedelic X" it's not going to be one of my favourites. That said I think the funk parts of this makes up for some of it and makes it at least somewhat interesting Standouts Little Child Runnin' Wild Freddie's Dead Superfly 3/5

Funk, strings, gets a little long, even at 37 minutes.

Pretty fly album!

Perfect fast walking city commute soundtrack. Love the jazz and classical additions to the funk. 3.5/4

Enjoyable, some fun tracks like pusherman in there

An OK listen, not bad but not a lot grabbed me.

custom_rating: 5

I enjoyed this album, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it. It was a nice change of pace from what we've been getting.

Instrumental parts are decent. The lyrics are corny. Good background music. I’m not a fan of this type of funk. It was better than Shaft though.

#541. I haven't liked the other movie soundtracks I've heard on this list, but this one's not too bad. 3/5: decent

This was an interesting album in that it's one of the few I listened to twice, because I wasn't sure how much I enjoyed it the first time around. Was there enough to warrant a 4 star? In the end I decided no, it's a 3. It's enjoyable, funky music, but not soul-stirring.

3 out of 5. Makes me want to watch the movie.

Helt okej, några låtar har man hört innan, inget världsomvälvande

First time I have ever listened to this complete album. Decent overall, but nothing in there is as memorable as Movin on Up. Still solid. 3.5/5

Good!!

Easy listening

Decent enough got OG sample of busta rhymes in there geddoooon

definitely a good listen

Pretty cool, easy to listen to

Smoooooooooooooth

Really liked this sound x

I liked this one, really just consistently just a great soundtrack and really enjoyable songs, especially Curtis' voice, but happened while listening to this (completely unrelated to this album) that bummed me out and just took me out of them mood for this. I will probably return to this when I'm in a better mood because it is good but it's just not what I'd wanna have on right now

Kinda liked it Will I listen to again: 10%

This was pretty cool. Better than the Shaft soundtrack since it didn’t need context from the movie.

It was cute. Wouldn't be mad to hear it again.

Not bad, I enjoyed it while it was on, but probably wouldn't relisten.

I'm always surprised whenever I find a soundtrack album on this site - I forget that there are soundtracks that have actually managed to be critically and commercially successful. I'm doubly as surprised to discover that this album is so similar in style and context to Shaft by Isaac Hayes, though I can't complain - Superfly is a fraction of the length Shaft is and about twice as good. It's very pleasing on the whole with an impressive level of audio fidelity and nuance in the instrumental department. My only real gripe is that the songs create a strong first impression, but fail to sustain my interest. I chalk it up to two things. Soundtracks are easier for me to engage with than band music, but it generally helps when I have a familiarity with the source material, as the memories I have of a media property are the main seller in my enjoyment of soundtracks. I also don't think that a lot of these songs go anywhere.

powerful full feeling melodies. funky rhythms

Some classics and great funk production. Minor gripe that I just don't really love that high falsetto singing, but uhh I was singing along so I'll overlook it.

Redundant

really good vibe but not the best of its kind

Super cool vibe. Won’t come back but really enjoyed

Funky which I always like

Super smooth tracks with tons of soul, swagger and siky guitar licks. Pusherman and Superfly are the obvious highlights, but the instrumentation is lush throughout. Momentum in the middle of the soundtrack does dip though. Best Tracks: - Pusherman - Superfly - Little Child Runnin Wild Worst Tracks: - Eddie You Should Know Better Rating: 7/10

A funk/soul album that kind of becomes background music after a few songs. This I guess works well since it was created for a film which you wouldn’t want the music to be super overwhelming. Still undecided if I enjoy the singing style or not since having listened to his first album on this list. Overall, its fine. 5/10

Funky, I like the instrumentation particularly. But this style is so iconic that it almost seems a little campy maybe? Favorite song either “think” or Freddie’s dead. I will probably start using the word “pusherman” involuntarily.

Curtis Mayfield played every instrument. I think this album is alright. I like the background music and I think that it's super cool that he played every instrument in the song. I don't really like that you can barely hear the lyrics but other than that the songs aren't bad! I wouldn't recommend it because my friends don't like this type of music.

Have you ever wanted to listen to a really catchy kind of jazzy type of song? Then this album is perfect for you. I personally don't really like this song because the lyrics are weird and kind of inappropriate in my opinion. Another reason why I don't really like this song is because I feel like the instruments don't match the tempo that the artist is actually singing at. But overall, I feel like this album is not a bad album but it's not personally really much of my style of music that I enjoy listening to. I probably would not recommend this album to someone because of what the songs are about and what the lyrics to the songs actually say. Another reason why I would not recommend this album to someone else is because I feel like someone my age especially would not like the song. Right now the that are actually trending are not at all like this song, so because of that I feel like I shouldn't recommend this album to someone else because they won't really enjoy actually listening to it very much.

in my opinion I kinda like the song but I kinda don't because the background drums. second one I don't like because of the sound and its just not my type of music. the third one I don't like because of the sound in the back whenever he's singing second I don't like the lyrics .

this album sounds good like a song i would listen too i really like this i could jam to this for a while but i like the funky feel to it

the first song is actually kinda good but the lyrics are weird just a little i like the way his voice sounds when he sings. the second song started off a little bad but i like the background music and the way he sings the lyrics sound normal to me cuz i can't really understand what they say. the last song started off good cuz of the beat or whatever and it's basically the same as the other 2

I kinda like this album because it has a good beat

Not a massive fan of funk at all, but i can certainly appreciate this album for what it is. rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (76/100)

That's not my taste in music

Class, easy listening.

Solid. Its no What's Goin On but funky.

I used to love those 1970's Blaxploitation films when there was nothing else to watch back in the days of 3 or 4 channels on TV. The soundtracks were always good and this one, Like 'Shaft' were the most famous. When a funky soul is done well, it should sound like this.

Funky tunes.

einmal im hintergrund mitgehört. sound gefälllt mir gut, mir ist jedoch kein highlight aufgefallen.

Erster Ton: oh je, Soul. Aber dann tönt es besser als erwartet.

Curtis Mayfield has a voice smooth as liquid butter, and I would happily listen to him sing pretty much whenever, but I'm constantly listening to this wondering if one of his studio albums could be been here instead - movie soundtracks are by definition missing something, and tend to be disjointed as they have to follow the film - so is it an album you "must listen to"? I'm not so sure.

jazzay

Loved cocaine song; super funky album, great singing, some songs were ok, the album gets a little repetitive toward the middle but there’s great highlights. Think is amazing, the instruments are simply beautiful. Really groovy and soulful album; superfly is a good song as well. On my initial listen: 7/10 or 3.5/5.

Never heard of this movie before but thought the music was cool for the most part. Fun (wooden sounding?) instruments. Chill vibes. Vocals a bit breathy/high at times but liked it overall.

i was raised on this type of music so i’m a bit biased but i enjoyed this!! curtis is a cool man and i like how chill it was to have as background music while we played stardew valley

i liked it i think curtis mayfield sounds like a cool guy the music just didn't stick with me

Bongos, Bass, and Beats - Superfly is a fun funk/soul soundtrack. The namesake single, Pusherman, and Freddie’s Dead are standouts for me.

That fly, fo'sure, was super. Nah, for real, it was a funky enough time, honestly.

Great but a bit odd for first thing in the morning. Definitely had me brushing my teeth with a bit more flavor.

Not my fav. A few good songs.

It’s better than his “There’s no place like America Today” album - This has less sexy-buttery-soul-vibe compared to the “America” album

Classic

Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" is a solid entry in the soul and funk genres. Though I haven't seen the film it accompanies, the soundtrack creates a cool, relaxed atmosphere with its smooth grooves. While it might not be the most energetic album, "Superfly" offers a consistently enjoyable listening experience. 3/5

not bad!

Despite ranking “Move on up” as one of my favourite tracks, I’ve always struggled with Mayfield’s broader oeuvre. It just doesn’t resonate with me and lacks the tempo I need in soul-funk tunes

Hell yeah

Un guy molto chill e raffinato, devo dire (sarebbe un 3.5/5, ma metterò tre stelline 😭)

I liked this but didn't love it. There was nothing in it that annoyed me, but there wasn't a ton in it that grabbed my attention either, save the Paul's Boutique samples.

I definitely enjoyed this album, but it is pretty far removed from my normal rotation. I wish more soundtracks were done by single artists, it makes the album more cohesive. I might have to watch the movie (I’ve never seen it) to fully appreciate this one.

Hellzzz yeah! Let’s get it goin’ on a Monday. All right, this was pretty ok over all nothing great beyond the singles we all know!

Start was good but then it went to a boring side.

Okay, I am not sure how Superfly hit so differently from the other Curtis Mayfield album i did but somehow, it just did. The music here still has some of that messiness from There's No Place Like America Today but it seems to be slightly better mixed with far less sudden instrument introductions than that. The vocals here are also somewhat better as the music complimented Mayfield's voice quite a bit better even if the lyrics here are a little strange (I'm sure they fit in the context of the movie though). This album isn't the most amazing thing ever but compared to There's No Place Like America Today, It is heaven. Best Song: Superfly Worst Song: Pusherman

Cool but mostly just decent. (What's the rationale for choosing which soundtracks to include into this list anyhow...?) The first track (Little Child Runnin' Wild) blows everything else out of the water.

Fun listen. Exactly what you would expect. Classic stuff. Three stars.

Curtis has a great groove in all of his songs so this album is a great refresher to yesterdays boring ahh album. I liked "Freddie's dead" the most.

Great album. This line from Freddies Dead hits hard now just as it did when it came out. "We can deal with rockets and dreams, but reality, what does it mean?"

Was great not my type of music and cool notes a lil forgettable tho

Ah yes, soul music of the 70s. Nice beats, smooth singing. All good listening. I'm always appreciative as well when a track or two are instrumental only.

Nice. Perhaps a bit too nice. A bit too smooth, a bit too "easy listening". 3/5.

Not as good as the soundtrack to Shaft. But it was alright. Was surprised to find the sample the Beastie Boys used in Egg Man came from here though.

I like a couple of the tracks, but didn’t finish. A lot of the tracks kind of sound the same to me. I have a feeling this was groundbreaking at the time it came out not sure how many other soul R&B concept albums existed at that point.

Enjoyed this album. 3.5 stars

It’s fine but nothing special to me

I dug it. More than I thought I would. So cheers to that.

groovy

A lovely, funky blacksploitation soundtrack for an autumnal Friday. Short, sweet and perfectly enjoyable.

Not quite as sharp as its contemporaries. It was fine but didn’t quite hit the soulful spot as other similar notable albums.

Fun and funky!

No. 266/1001 Little Child Runnin Wild 3/5 Pusherman 3/5 Freddie's Dead 3/5 Junkie Chase 3/5 Give Me Your Love 3/5 Eddie 3/5 No Thing On Me 3/5 Think 3/5 Superfly 4/5 Average: 3,11 This was alright to listen to.

Escuchas un album de estas características y escuchas toda la música de este género. Shaft , la película y su pista sonora podría ser el clásico referente.

Haven't heard much still before but this was quite good

Good soundtrack. Good music.

Very listenable, even though I don't really like soul. I can see why it's considered a classic.

Within the context of the film Superfly, this soundtrack is fantastic. On its own, the album is not bad but not amazing.

Not really my thing. Not Curtis fault though. Different but mostly the same, if that makes sense.

Average listen. Nothing really stood out. Music was generally good, but nothing capturing.

Man the high from the first half of this album is undeniable and I could listen to that funkiness over and over again....the second half trails off a bit but still a great album and I definitely need to check out more of Mayfield's music! 4 tracks added to the 1001 Experience Playlist

Pusherman was my favourite track Overall, bass lines, guitar licks, and Mayfield's vocals were the highlights for me. The lyrics told some pretty sad stories!

Dated yet..funky. Not too bad.

Still not a fan of Mayfield's falsetto, but this was a fun and funky album.

Soul progresivo, funk. Ni fu ni fa.

funk[2]progressive soul[3]. Rollo.

I can’t do back to back

It was fine but didn’t stand out that much to me

A pretty fun and funky jam. I probably won't seek much out from here again, but it was pretty fun while it was on

I enjoyed this, mainly as a relic from the era.

Grooviness of the 70’s in full effect

Not bad, as with all soundtracks on this list it probably would help if I knew the film it was scoring.

Definitely a cultural icon, but not something for light listening.

I like his voice and the songs are mostly there but a lot of the instrumentation and arrangement is pretty dated. Some cool songs here.

Smooth soulful sounding soundtrack of the movie of the same name speaking about blaxploitation in the 70s. Best: Super Fly Worst: Junkie Chase - Instrumental 3.5 Stars

Fat white boys form Logan upon listening to this album: https://youtu.be/7few4tKonWw?si=yunPj-mXZ5yyw3r6

probably great for its time, but not my style

This is undoubtably a funky classic, but I do think Curtis has better albums than this. *Heard before.

I don't know much about the movie Super Fly, but I do know that Freddie's dead on the corner.

funky plaatje...

Funky! Proper funky funk! Enjoyed this one! Not enough to run out and buy it, but enough to maybe look at a bit more Curtis!

Groovy - songs hit and miss

Good groovy, funky, soulful jams. Didn't expect an oboe on this album. 3.8

Superfly is so cool. Pusherman and Freddies Dead are fun. Such a vibe.

Better than I expected.

Smooth and funky.

Омай гад that's a funky shit
