Reviews (page 5 of 13)

So good. Not a ton of range, but the instrumentals break things up and add some variety. Very fun and cool.

Tosi hyvä viba. Ääni todella hyvä myös.

Powerful stuff. Enjoyed that.

Superfly lives up to its name by being verycool, extremelyrad and extradope

Super fly is right. Definitive groove. You could live on these bass lines. 'Bout time these details came to the front of the line.

Super funky Superfly!

This is excellent. Mayfield sets a mood and delivers a message and while I don't know enough about Superfly (the movie) to say anything useful, it seems significant that this record is part of the blaxplotation chapter of '70s movies and adds another layer of intrigue to the album.

I wonder why I never listened to this before. He's got a great voice and I dig his approach to funky soul. Plus his lyrics were interesting. Thumb's way up.

Curtis was one cool cat. I'd say he was the epitome of Superfly

Just put this on and enjoy the ride. You can gather the plot of the movie from the soundtrack and it's an infectious groove throughout. 3.5 -> 4

First discovered this while going to high school in Frankfurt Germany. So the movie at the same time. Great album

Fun album.

This album is an absolute masterpiece of 70s soul and funk that somehow manages to be both smooth and incredibly gritty at the same time. It's like a journey through the streets, with lush music and deep basslines. Curtis Mayfield's voice and the socially conscious lyrics hit hard. Tracks like "Pusherman" and "Freddie's Dead" are amazing, blending psychedelic soul with a dark side. It's perfect for a party and tells a powerful story all at once. Every instrument, from guitar to harp, sounds amazing!

Never seen the film but the tracks here are crisp and cinematic, very groovy and atmospheric.

It’s Curtis one of the top 10 maybe top 5 singers, fantastic voice and great songs. A 4/5 maybe shade it lower but still a brilliant album.

Super good

I'd buy drugs from Curtis Mayfield.

Groovy album! Fun!!

Stone cold classic. My intro to proper 70s funk

Fun and funky. I realized my Dad put the last song on this album on his “Chunks of Funk” playlist, so it felt like he was sharing music with me today when I was listening. Thanks, Dad!

I’ve heard of Curtis mayfield, but I don’t think I could name any of his tunes. Genuinely a groovy soundtrack that makes me want to watch the movie. The horns and the wah guitar sounds so good. Such a good 70s soundtrack, not just for the 70s but in general.

Super funky soul music with a conscious. Protest music that everyone could jam to.

Wonder if this is the only movie soundtrack album on this list. I mean this was a great album and the connection to the Blaxpoitation "sound" is just great. Heavy funk and soul and you can just hear it syncing up to the movie. I've never actually seen Super Fly, so i'm not clear on how well the "sound track" follows the movie, but the album heavily focuses on drug abuse and drug dealers. Pusherman and Superfly are the big songs on here. Superfly didn't really sound familiar to me, but Pusherman i've heard many times. Superfly is a great title/intro song though. Overall it's a great album.

Ninguno me tocó pero tengo que reconocer que la instrumental está buenisima. Quiero ver la película de la carátula.

A 70s soul album that is also an action movie soundtrack sounds like a good time. It is a good time, thankfully. Mayfield has an excellent if slightly high pitched voice, and the songcraft is excellent. Lyrics are among the most conscious soul lyrics I've heard, and they are delivered through silky-smooth soul numbers. Granted, there are a couple throwaway instrumentals, and some of the lyrics probably make more sense in the context of the film, but it's still a good standalone album. It's tight, funky, and soulful in equal measures, making it a shining example of conscious early-70s soul music. Notably, it doesn't go out of its way to sound cinematic, which is what allows it to stand alone on its own with such strength of material. An excellent effort from one of music's greatest periods of creativity and experimentation.

A brilliant soul album with great instrumentation and vocals that almost mask a dark subject matter, dealt with in a deft way in this solid album. And at only 36 minutes, a very easy listen.

Smooth, groovy, fantastic! Gotta love the vibe and his silky voice. Musically, it's quite substantial for a soundtrack album. Cool base lines and funky drums. Love those wahhh-chika… wahhh-chika disco guitar vamps. One of the few albums that makes the points about systemic racism without sounding like a lecture or a treatise. "Pusherman" is a good example. I'd heard the Fishbone version of "Freddie's Dead" a dozen times before this original, so it took me a bit of recalibrating to appreciate it. Super cool, though. Oddly, I love it, but I never think to play something like this. Always happy when it pops up, but it's not super common. I'd call this a 4. It's solid and good, but did it change music? Is it influential? Nah, but it is a good representative of the time and style.

Un estilo que no me esperaba pero muy bueno para escuchar en todo momento

Awesome album, stunning instrumentation

Great album

Been awhile since I both saw this film and listened to the soundtrack on it's own. At this point I think the soundtrack is far, far more popular than the film itself and it's not hard to see why, given the great blend of funk and soul music Mayfield provides here. 8.5, maybe 9/10.

Real good funk, probably would have been even better if I saw the movie. Favourite track: Superfly

smooth and enjoyable soul album, nicely instrumentalized without being annoying.

This was a joy to listen to. I was not expecting this much substance. Extra bonus... Now I know where the Beastie Boys got that sample!

4/5. Superfly serves as a soundtrack for the film of the same name. I have not seen the movie so I cannot speak to its quality, but this album is great and manages to be a compelling narrative on its own separate from the film. The instrumentation is great and the lyrics tackle social issues in a very compelling way. great listen.

This was a trip to go back and listen to. Love the soul of this! I’m learning, as I barrel through this countdown, that this type of mid 70s funk is something I really dig. Mayfield’s voice is excellent, but there’s so much more to like about this album than just his vocals. I really liked Little Child Runnin’ Wild, set the table perfectly for what was to follow. Also totally dug Give Me Your Love and No Thing On Me, a couple of great tracks. There’s just such great musicality happening throughout, so many things blending amazingly. 4 stars. Going to revisit this when I am done with my vacation, to see what else I get into. Might eventually change this to 5 stars.

Classic

coolos

Très très sympa en fond

This is a lot of fun. Gonna need to watch the movie now.

I believe Curtis Mayfield to be an overlooked genius. I love his music and this album is no exception.

Superfly is, indeed, super fly. Groovy and fun and dance-able. 8/10

super funky. not surprised this is a soundtrack from the 70s. this soundtrack feels like summer. reminds me of young americans (the album) by david bowie with the soul type of music. junkie chase is beautiful and euphoric and i usually don’t like instrumental tracks so that says a lot. this whole album is so euphoric and majestic it’s insane. favorite songs are give me your love, junkie chase, eddie you should know better, no thing on me.

this was great. really smooth tunes. second half of the album much better. its just groovy stuff. awesome production too! 7/10

ну имба

Just an all around great album, the merit of which can be seen by it staying way more known than the film it was composed for. I don't think all of it is standout, a fair bit of background stuff here, but when it's good it comes on strong.

Pretty great soundtrack, makes me want to watch the movie. Pusherman was a highlight. 3.5 rounded up.

No está mal, no me parece una gran obra maestra, pero como musiquita de fondo o en una sesión en una fiesta de verano de las que pincha el Chais queda bien, agradable, al solecito. Según avanza el álbum, mejor.

Rather enjoyed this. It was a nice change of pace from recent offerings and, considering it is a soundtrack album, it did stand up on its own.

Nice change of pace. Was familiar with ‘superfly’ but little else and, considering this was a soundtrack, it was a coherent piece of work that didn’t lull in many places. The drums and bass were particularly tight and some nice accents from the guitar gave this nice funk and soul vibe.

I really like Curtis Mayfield’s voice though.. and that funk. Going 4.1 on this.

Groovy! Enjoyed this more than I expected, especially after learning it was a soundtrack. I don’t have any nostalgia or context for Mayfield. 7/10 Quite Likeable

More my speed (in more ways than one)

3.75 - I think that I need to hear this in the context of the film now.

Some beautiful, groovy songs about coke and stuff, bravo

Wonderful album. What a sound!

So this is where Bruno Mars gets all his vocal inspiration from. Very good album with amazing vocal performance and instrumental arrangements. Can get very repetitive in some songs tho.

LCRW - so smooth, so fine, so hoppy, so jazzy-soul. Excellent. Pusherman - very good. Freddie's Dead - not as a fan of the horns and the tones here, felt a bit repetitive, but still nice. Junkie Chase - excellent lil instrumentral, perfect for the assumed context. Give Me Your Love - good, not obnoxious (which i value in love songs). EYSKB - didn't really leave a mark, but not bad. COCAINE SONG - good track, representative of the album. Think - too whimsical? Just kinda alright. Superfly - FUNK CITY!! Freddie's Dead (single mix) - a bit better balanced at this shorter length.

ooo movie soundtrack I get a feeling this is one of those I heard before without hearing before and that's just part of the influence i feel like pusherman overstays but that might just be my genZ cooked attention span the instrumental is giving buddy cop movie chase scene energy, probably because it's called Junkie Chase Is this album the reason chase scenes in those old movies have that sound? Think Instrumental is amazing ok I KNOW I heard the title track before very entertaining, I feel cultured for having listened to it

wednesday evening, only one small light on and i be groovin to this

Was excited for another Curtis Mayfield after the previous one. Slightly too samey to be a 5 for me but really, really good. High 4. Title track is probably my favourite. Haven’t seen the film but this definitely works without that context.

enda et shuffle album. men likevel bunnsolid

It's been decades since I watched the movie, but I have listened to the soundtrack lots of times since then. I wish it was a longer movie cause Curtis Mayfield knocks it out of the park. I remember enjoying the music more than the movie. I looked it up this is one of the first soundtracks that made a ton of money. Good album, use this album as a reason to listen to more of his music. It turned my day into listening to nothing but Curtis Mayfield for the rest of the day.

Oh my goodness! I need more funny music in my life now!

Super smooth, funk soundtrack. Great listen with Freddie's Dead being my fav song and fav first listen of the album with Superfly and No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) being my other highlights

très bon 4/5

Cool instrumentals, very spy like!

Bastante guay, aunque no estoy muy acostumbrado al soul, por eso no creo que lo haya disfrutado como debiera.

Pusherman theme

Now this is good

Super! And, indeed, fly!

Classic soundtrack from a fantastic artist….

I quite liked it. Probably a 3.5 star rating is about right, but I'll bump it to a 4 so I seem sophisticated.

This is a really, really good, full bodied album, especially for a soundtrack album which can often be just one or two songs and filler. Curtis Mayfield is a brilliant songwriter. This album goes way beyond just the most famous title track. Highlights include: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Freddie's Dead, No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song), Think - Instrumental

sounds like espresso

The title pretty much says how I feel. Super flyyyyyy babyyy I enjoyed this, felt like I was wearing a corduroy flared suit. Eddie you should know better (belter) No thing on me (belter) I really enjoyed this album, the voice the piano, the drums, the whole assortment of it. Would listen again

Fantastic record , and listening to this sound track really gave the vibe of a 70s American cops and robbers film very vintage sounding , the sounds gave me this imagination of a sprawling urban city and painted a picture with the lyrics of a drug infested downtown neighbourhood And the sounds are epic , from the percussion section which you don’t hear is a prominent in a soundtrack , to the blazing horns the signature wah wah effect going off on the guitar , Curtis soulful voice gave everything and more to this album A 4 for me verging on a 5 but think it’s something I wouldn’t revisit loads although very good

Classic 70s funk vibes on this one, I've already heard a few of these tracks and the famous wah guitar chugs, maybe this is the record which made this famous? Also interesting to have an album that was scored for a film on here. Can't deny the musicianship that went into recording this, it's flawless and many have tried to imitate this style and failed. On par with Marvin Gaye's what's going on, in pioneering the soul genre. They were only released a year apart too! Favourite track: Eddie Should Know Better. The drums and that snare thwack at the start with the percussion, into a controlled dynamic drum performance with poetry from Curtis' smooth buttery voice. And the strings! I really can't fault the production on this either it's very tasteful. I have to go and watch the film this was made for now! I'll also bet money that these drums have been sampled on many songs, they sound so fucking good! Just got to the track Think, the guitar in that is really gentle to play with such a light touch too, so tasteful!

Groovy 💃

Funky, fun, poignant, a battle with drugs. Very much enjoyed this record.

So fun. I think I need to watch the movie???

I liked this quite a lot, more than I expected to. I'm not a big funk/soul person but this was kind of cool and despite being a movie soundtrack, it held my attention pretty well. 3.5 stars.

Great album for a fun movie. It just lags a little for me at the middle and towards the end. The instrumental "Think" is nothing special, so is "No Thing On Me". But this is a short, sweet album that I really like and was happy to see on here. The highs (no pun intended) are fantastic...Freddie's Dead, Pusherman, Superfly...all awesome.

Funky and tragic, solid grooves that had my head bopping the entire time. Could feel myself slipping into a shag carpet wall and floor getting lost in the melodies.

Smooooth

fun and surprising

ладно я переслушал и мне зашло, это круто

This was an enjoyable listen. I am a fan of the genre generally speaking so I figured I would like this. I did find myself kind of going into it with pretty high expectations because I've heard legend of this album but I maybe set them way too high. This is far from a bad record and has some great moments like "Think" Freddy's Dead" and the other instrumentals. But I found that sometimes the tracks, and the pacing of the album in spite of its runtime being fairly short the tracks would meander a little too much for my liking. I can't put this lower than a 4/5 stars but I think I'll definitely have to be in a certain mood to listen to this again in full. Overall, literally everything was perfect from music to themes ...and I've never SEEN the movie. Honestly the amount of swagger laced in each track on the album is impressive. Also Curtis has GREAT vocals.

Great album!

Enjoyable with some recognized songs, Pusherman and Superfly. Fun, fresh feeling for each song, 4 stars.

Listened driving to work. Very smooth, very funky! It was a little bit too cheesy for me though. Great album!

Never listened to a full Curtis album before and it didn’t disappoint! Great album that will get many more spins

Absolute Classic. Never seen the movie though. Music is great, though

The highs are really high but then the filler is just filler. It totally makes sense as a movie soundtrack, but is a pretty boring listen as a full album. The string and horn arrangements are sickj though and the production quality is super high. It feels like I'm not learning anything new from it, but I imagine it would have been really fresh when it was released

Funky and soulful, pretty much exactly what I expected

040226 21:05 4

Pre-listen: Know what vibe I might be getting, but interesting to see just how much this grabs me. Post-listen: Really great stuff, so evocative. The string swells and layering/mixing is just impeccable. Some ‘real shit’ thematically too. What an album, front to back it’s different vignettes of life. Hard to see how this funk sound can sound any better than this.

doida pra escutar de fone. amei os nomes das músicas.

How can you go wrong with 70s funk/soul?

Groovy and fun, had some fantastic tracks.

locked in on this sound

Cool album, great to listen to. Really like the instrumental stuff going on. Good messaging. Solid throughout. Give it a listen

Right off the bat, I like seeing the 37 minute run time. My hopes are up that this is concentrated goodness. Smooth, experience, just wish it was a little more dynamic. Kind of album that does a fine job of just letting time slip by while you work.

little child runnin' wild - solid start to the album, love the instrumentation love the instrumental breaks favourites: eddie you should know better, think, no thing on me

Wonderful, great vocals and incredibe instrumentation.

7/10 Best songs: Pusherman, Superfly Politically aware 70s music. This album is deceptive: the music is a whole vibe, very chill, very easygoing, yet the lyrics tackle social issues affecting socioeconomically disadvantaged and Black communities. Overall really good stuff.

Where does this soundtrack get off being so go damn good!? Pusherman had me dancing in the shower, the cool low bass counter to the highs of the horns and guitar. Lush instrumentals that break late into the song to Mayfield sliding in for a few bars of falsetto, so cool.

Supaneat!!

Energy, energy, energy!!! They must have put crack in this soundtrack. Such a vivid and uncompromising sound. There’s a spirit of excitement that grabs your attention and forces you to focus on these magnificent horns. This sense of power is emphasized with how dynamic many of these songs are, growing and swelling until it feels like the sound has no other choice but to be let out. Faves: Pusherman, Think - Instrumental, Superfly, Little Child Runnin’ Wild

Great bassline on Freddie’s Dead, hadn’t remembered No Thing on Me and enjoyed that.

9.1. What a groove (though Curtis still clears). Most underrated track: Think

FUNKYYY. Will probably watch the OG movie tonight to get context. Remake tbd on whether the OG is good or not. Freddie's Dead is definitely theme song worthy. I only wish there were more songs.

Super influential album, this album by Curtis Mayfield is a must listen soundtrack album. It is one of the only albums made for a movie and actually outsold the movie. Superfly is a near perfect album all assembled very well and has a tight tracklist. Very masterful production a essential listen.

Not to bad

Solid Jazz, easy to enjoy and engage with

Mega vibes

Very pleasant background music. Forgot it was on at times, but in a good way. 3.5 rounded up.

Nice funk-soul mix that. Enjoyed.

By the time he was like 21, Curtis Mayfield was already a seasoned veteran of the music industry. Revolutionary guitar player who changed the way entire genres approached the instrument. We love some socially conscious funky-ass songs. Now all I need to do is see the movie

how the hell are there only two curtis mayfield albums in this project. savor them! favorite tracks: Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Junkie Chase, Superfly

Elevated blaxploitation soundtrack

Yeaaaaaaaah

I don't typically find movie soundtracks this engaging. It's as if the music is a character in its own right.

красивая музыка про жизнь мальчика в гетто

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this album. Smooth soul like you would find in Blacksploitation movies. And Tarantino ones, with which I am more familiar. So good I listened to it twice in a row, even though this is not my favourite kind of music.

This one was great!! Makes me want to watch the movie

This one's real good! Funky as hell. Fav tracks: Pusherman, Think, Superfly

Never heard before, silky typical 70's soul. Beautiful voice. Good album but definitely of it's time

Favourites: 1. Freddie's Dead 2. Little Child Runnin' Wild 3. Give Me Your Love (Love Song) Least Favourite: No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)

I liked it, felt funky

Funk soul brother some great sounds

This record is really good. I am a bit surprised I haven’t heard of it before. But I will definitely come back and listen to it again.

Very funky. Would listen again

Hell yeah

Curtis Mayfield has an amazing voice, this is a style of music I'm not that overly familiar with but I really enjoyed this. Hoping to dig into more. Playlist track: Freddie's Dead

It was a bi lt repetitive but I liked the groove of it

This is probably the grooviest album I’ve ever listened to. The instrumental section of “Think” sounds absolutely amazing and distinctive, making it my favorite track on the album. Curtis Mayfield’s vocals are smooth and effortlessly charismatic, pulling you in and making it impossible not to move along with the rhythm. A great album overall.

What a beautiful voice Curtis has, hard to not like this one, I must watch the movie now🤣 Mr Soulful

I'm between a 4 or a 5.

I am debating between a 4 and a 5, I don't know how much I will listen to this afterwards but I love good funk and it was an excellent listen for me

This is an era-defining classic, with many memorable funk jams and great lyrics too

Very solid album! I hadn’t properly listened to Curtis Mayfield before but clearly recognised it once it was playing. Managed to have the ability to be good background music, while also having more of a socio-political message if you listened to the lyrics. Will definitely go into my rotation

I was aware of Pusherman and had a 3 ready and loaded for this under the assumption that it was the standout on an otherwise unremarkable film soundtrack, but there's a lot more bench strength here than I had expected and I'll probably be listening to this more in the future.

Oh hell yeah i could get down with this

This is so 70's, but I love it. Funkalicious!

It’s a funky bop! Would pick it up if I’m trying to clean it want to groove with some friends.

Cool mal einen Film-Soundtrack zu haben (wenn es wirklich einer ist, habs nicht recherchiert). Ich konnte mich gut in die Stimmung versetzen. Schmeckt.

Pusherman is a song for the ages.

Not my usual vibe but liked it, very of its time and makes me want to see the movie. Liked best no thing on me and superfly.

1/7- SUPERFLY, 1972 Giving fun 70’s funk heist movie. Not seen movie but it’s giving that lol. It’s fun.

Great album, blast from the past.

Slick sounding funk and soul. Im not familiar with similar albums, but this sounds great. Catchy songwriting, good performances.

Liked this album Favorite song pusherman

Smooth, cool

soulful and funky! great percussion, guitar, horns, strings, and lyrical content. the 70's delivers again

super funky j'ai beaucoup aimé, ça m'a donné envie de voir le film

Didn't realize this was a movie soundtrack before this. A really great album

Great Soundtrack.

solid 4

1st one on the list! Tratare de agregar a Gustavo

groovy as fuck

Very good soulful/funk album.

Lekker

Wanneer filmavond met de bois voor deze

Ik hoop dat ik deze basloopjes nonstop hoor wanneer ik dood ben

Illegally groovy.

Pretty good for a movie track and I like the fast pace jazz and instrumental. -7.5/10

Superfly cruises through the city at night with the windows down. There is a lot of sugar in this medicine.

Inconnu au bataillon avant cette écoute. Belle découverte !

You could tell from the beginning it fell very much as the soundtrack of a heist movie which I found really cool and the soul music always hits the spot so great first album recommendation.

FUnky and soulful and fun

I really like this album. It felt very visual. It felt very warm and also real and I love Curtis‘s voice. It’s so unique even now I feel it has such a soulful energy to it and his kind of humble and conscious delivery. I guess I don’t have the words for it but feels very true. I love the messaging in this album. I feel like so many of the themes are still so relevant to today and it’s a very universal album even though it was highly focussed and created around black culture and black exploitation movies, which is the soundtrack to the movie which I have not seen, but yeah, I really enjoyed it. I would listen to this you know regularly the songwriting is interesting Catchy but unique arrangements are beautiful like I’m really amazing string sections beautiful horns. The rhythm section is always great on these types of records. I feel like I’m not sure if this was Motown at the time I’m not sure but feels like that sure feels like that so yeah I loved it. I mean, what can I say? I just I love this type of music. I think it’s simple but attack the issues of him very confidently.

Such a classic stereotypical sound, but in a way that shows you where everyone else got it from. A joy to listen to.

Favorite Songs: Freddie’s Dead, Give Me Your Love, No Thing on Me Least Favorite Song: Think Soundtrack so good it makes me want to watch the movie that I’ve heard not so good things about.

Hell yeah Superfly.

Not my favorite musical genre, but this transcends style with its substance. An amazing album that is hard to believe was a soundtrack. Already knew it was legendary and culturally significant but it just plain sounds good and hits me right in my sociology bones. Good stuff.

Such a good opening song holy shit

music from the soul for the soul

Really cool and smooth, made me want to watch the film

little child running’ wild, pusherman and superfly. nothing else caught my attention but half was instrumentals anyway.

Album icónico y poderoso

its fire

really enjoyed the blues sound of this album! freddie’s dead, no thing on me, & the think instrument are my top songs!

this one an 8

Muy lindo pero nada especial

Funky production, interesting variety of vocal performances, cohesive theme. tuned out at times, but in my own head?

A great template for a newer sound, love the guitar as almost percussion instrument

7/10 - surprisingly actually really enjoyed the album. very groovy. especially liked superfly and pusherman.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 will hear again

Solid 4, nice vibe

I remember seeing this film as a teenager and instantly loving the Pusherman track. I don't remember being hit across the face by any of the other music but, years later, when I listened to the album on its own I realized it's pretty much great from wall to wall. Curtis was great, Superfly was great. Let's see if it holds up.

Very goo

You are not going to hear a cooler, smoother album than this!

I have never seen the movie Superfly or listened to this album all the way through. It's stereotypical early 70's soul and time (as well as movies parodying blaxploitation movies) has made a lot of what is on this album a cliche. It should not be. Even the instrumentals on here are worthy of being heard and it's hard to not be into this type of funky soul music. I don't know who Freddie is or exactly why there is a pusherman, but I'm sure the movie would explain it all to me. This is my second straight day with a winner of an album. I want to give the album a "5," but I don't know if I would put this album on directly but I would add this album to my listing of 1001 albums that I enjoyed. It's hard to not recommend every song on here. It's hard to ignore or pan any album with the song Junkie Chase on it. Nowadays the soundtrack would have 23 songs and be watered down by the enormous amount of music on the soundtrack. 9 songs is perfect here though.

Great. Pure soul and funk. Easy listening. Groovy. Curtis’s voice flows so well on these tracks. 8.5/10

first album. banger

Легенда! Все дуже стильно і красиво.

Groovy funky mellow fun

Vibey and swingin

one of a kind soundtrack

yeah decent. chill. prefer some of his more upbeat stuff but hey. nice funky little album. not much to complain about here.

FUNKY!!! buja troche jazzowy mysle

I like the style/genre of this one :) More of a 4.5

Pretty nicely funky!

OH YEAH BABEY. WE FUNKIN IT UP

I felt superfly listening to this

Funky.

Great soundtrack that works for casual listening as well. Killer tracks

was very good i liked it

Impeccable album

This was a cool album. Empowering but beautiful

This was great! Progressive soul-like and tells a narrative. I’ve never seen superfly but I know what it’s all about from this. Very cool album.

Nice and funky

Is Curtis Mayfield capable of making bad music? I don’t think so.

Level above the last like 30 albums

Albums where the title also works as a review: Superfly.

The OG Curtis Mayfield! Smooth as butter!

I really liked this. this is quite different to what I usually listen to but I really enjoyed it. NOt sure if I will be going back to it any time soon, but I'm glad I've heard it.

This is quintessential 1970s funky fresh fun. Mayfield is smooth like butter. Top tracks: "Superfly," "Little Child Runnin' Wild," "Pusherman"

Definitive proof that you don't need dope to make dope music. Favorites: 'Pusherman', 'Freddie's Dead', 'No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song)', and 'Superfly'

Very, very cool sound, with lyrics that pack a punch. His voice is extremely easy to listen to.

Good album

Decent. Not my style of music.

His third album. Soundtrack for the movie of the same name. Funk / Soul. I have no idea what urban ghetto life for black people was like in 1972 USA, but I am happy for Curtis Mayfield to give me some of his takes on the subject while being smooth as silk. Good storytelling combined with funky jams. Cool as ice.

I'm not familiar with Superfly, nor was I expecting to see a movie soundtrack on this generator. That being said, with lack of context, this was awesome. This was funky, soulful, and just overall a fun listen. It kept me hooked from start to finish. I may just have to watch the movie so that I can feel it in all its glory!

For a movie soundtrack, to have written so many fantastic conceptual pieces is an extraordinary feat. Totally enjoyed this.

I've never seen this "Motion Picture" but the music is pretty smooth and groovy in a soulfully 70's kind of way. Beastie Boys samples Superfly for their song Egg Man.

I feel like a 5 year old watching television in 1979. This funky inner city vibe was the soundtrack to almost every tv show at that time, even the kids shows. I already know Pusherman from some random compilation. This is a solid soundtrack. The vibe, as great as it is, is not an everyday thing for me. I wouldn’t turn it off if it randomly came on any time though.

One of the best soundtracks ever. Curtis is in fine funky mode one this one.

Pretty flawless. I love Curtis Mayfield's voice, it's so unique and recognizable. Cool instrumentation, smooth, a little dated - some might say CLASSIC. Compelling narrative: difficult but not disturbing, complicated without being taxing. Still sounds great.

Funky, soulful, groovy, and orchestral all at once. Pretty solid and interesting overall for me.

Absolutely a vibe, funky, fresh, timeless

4 1/2 might be my favorite funk album

This is great, so beautifully composed. All the instruments blend perfectly to create some groovy soul. An unexpected no skip album, with a few songs peaked my curiosity about the movie. Great album that had me saying "oooooohhhh yaaa" more than I care to admit.

Honestly this really good. I could buy it on vinyl at some point. It’s quite a 5 for me, but it’s a 4+.

Great for having company over.

# Album Name: Superfly # Artist: Curtis Mayfield # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Three opening bangers and ends on a banger. Bit in between is decent. # Top Tunes: Little child running wild / pusherman / Freddies dead / superfly # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Day 13. Best tracks: Freddie’s Dead, Superfly, Pusherman. … 8/10. Does it belong on the list? Yes. It's a classic of funky soul from the 1970s, and is at the very peak of original movie soundtracks.

I dare you not to dance. Double dare you.

Smooth shit. Beautiful layers and production. Sad, serious, melancholy, despondent at times lyrics, but it’s lifted up by the buoyant and lively playing. I’ve had two Curtis Mayfield albums and the have both been must-listens! #248.

45 minutes of Mayfield is like the brain getting 45 minutes in a snuff mat. So much floating and fun instrumentals. It’s more fun to imagine the songs aren’t directly about a movie and are just a dude singing like it’s a DARE session

This album brings the damn funk. That wah wah pedal must have been smoking after recording these tracks. It's smooth and it makes me want to be surrounded by orange and brown shag carpeting taking a drag off a cigarette. So, yes, me and the wah pedal are both smoking now. I'm not usually a big funk/soul guy, but this was damn pleasant. I can't really find any fault with it and would gladly listen to this over again. Favorite tracks on this listen were "Little Child Runnin' Wild," "Pusherman," and "Superfly." Superfly is a very strong 4 for me. I have to be in the mood to listen to it but when I am, yeah it's great. Best soul I've had on this project so far.

By far the most druggie album I have listened to.

Personal is political concept album of orchestral soul and funk. I love this in principle and really like it for most of the songs. Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Give Me Your Love are smoking hot, all in their own way. Mayfield was so smart and so on.

Still fresh, still jams.

Vibes are so good it actually makes you want to watch the film

Good soul album

Day 85 The little word cloud thing says the most popular word in album reviews for this is ‘groovy’, hard to disagree really. 8/10 Highlights Pusherman Superfly

Damn fine record.

Great Songs: Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) Good Songs: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Junkie Chase, Give Me Your Love (Love Song), Eddie You Should Know Better, Think, Superfly Mid Songs: Bad Songs:

Great funky rhythms with a dark underbelly

Super cool

Fantastic. Makes me want to watch the movie? Not much else to say here

This is far too good to be a soundtrack, what on Earth.

This is what the 70s sound like in my head

So very cool, as an album. The songs are a bit long, but the panel of sounds, the base lines, and his voice are all great great assets. There aren't that many record like this out there, hence why it is important that this one is here.

couldn’t be a better time

No one does it like Curtis Mayfield.

Loved it 4.5 stars. That voice is incredible.

Deep grooves, funky hustles, filthy goodness 🔥

aMAZING FUNK BLUES r&b

Was talking about the best soundtrack album yesterday, and apparently NOW this pops up… what crazy timing. Great vibes through its 36min run, so funky and fresh it shows the peak of 70’s music me thinks

This album is sick. I have never seen Superfly, but I might have to after listening to this. Just such a fun soul funk album, with such a smoooooth voice. Great instrumentation and fills my ears with joy.

I don't often listen to soul. I think it is to do with the natural movement of music in random other directions. It is pretty specific and era fixed. One won't casually run into Curtis Mayfield soul on the radio or even in a soundtrack (that is not from the actual movie in the 70's!) However, this does not diminish or weaken the cool, groovy, pleasure from listening to it. I mean Mmm... this is just like having a rare dessert or an exceptional wine. Throw this on in the middle of a party and see what happens...

70s chill black guy

Great Artist. Excellent record

Oh me oh my do I love some Curtis Mayfield. Great album, movies don’t usually get scores this good but usually they’re just getting Hans Zimmer to make them just another soundtrack. We need more Curtis Mayfields making movie music.

Good funky grooves. 7/10

Pusherman should be required on every soundtrack for a 70s crime procedural

There is just something so innately cool about Curtis Mayfield. He's slick, he's sly, he's cool. So from a personality standpoint, he had me from the word go. But then throw in the orchestration, the arrangements, and the sax, and you have an instant winner for me. I don't care who it is - give me an album like this and I will eat it up and ask for more. This genre is so untapped for me. I haven't explored it nearly enough to full grasp on it, and I hope to god there's more funk on this list. Please. Give it to me. Four big stars. Standout Tracks: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Pusherman, Junkie Chase, Superfly

Strong 4

Superfly gets extra credit for being a soundtrack to a movie that actually exists. I dig the psychedelic/progressive/cinematic soul and funk vibe.

At last, an album that sounds like a soundtrack because it is one! Super fun!

The Good: We get to see a funny movie! The Bad: No McLovin in this movie… The Ugly: Went on a beer-run for nothing… I am starting to doubt my memory… could have sworn that I listened to this album, and that I hated, to find out that I did not listen to this album, and that I don’t hate it… This is close to perfect background music, nice and relaxing, doesn’t overbear at a single moment, while it just kind of takes you from left to right and back. So yeah, here’s to a funk album getting 4* from me! Who’d have thought?

Really good. I need to watch the movie now

I really liked the vibe of this!

264/1089 - Some songs are really cool and varied and others like Pusherman and Superfly are the same thing over and over again. Overall good but not great.

Thought I'd want to skip it as it is a soundtrack to a movie I've never seen and am not really planning to. But it's a pretty good album by itself, and I am not usually fond of soul but I liked it.

Álbum muito divertido. Que boa levada Funk! QoA Vesper.
