Reviews (page 6 of 13)

makes me want to watch the movie. great concept album by itself

I regrettably don’t have the context of the film with me at hand, but that only seems to matter if I wanna know why Freddie’s Dead and why Eddie should know better. I mean, nobody has to watch The Bodyguard to listen to the plethora of Whitney Houston songs that came with it. Doesn’t matter thought, because this shit slaps. Nice buttery soul that manages to sustain a life for itself outside its origins. Even the instrumentals are fucking sweet. I figured they would be filler from the film, but no. Curtis showed some depth here. My only nitpick is that the songs are about a minute too long. They could have ended sooner. Favorite track: No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) Other hits: Pusherman, Superfly, Little Child Runnin’ Wild, Freddie’s Dead, the instrumentals (Junkie Chase and Think)

Smooth as hell. This is some late night funk chill stuff that has a life and fame of it's own detached from the movie it was created to serve. While the movie is dated, this soundtrack never gets old and feels more vibrant than half the stuff produced today.

It's real good and all, but apart from Pusherman, the songs don't really stick to me. It's not as good as Madvillainy.

4/5. great soul.

When I think of soundtracks from the 70's, this is always the one that comes to mind. And for good reason.

Horny sex jam, ballads about drugs, warm vocals, funky guitars and great grooves - what else could you want from a soul album?

A soul classic. The orchestration is amazing. Favorites: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Freddie's Dead, No Thing on Me Would I listen to it again: Yes

This was great! Fun and funky - more than holds its own as a concept album without the movie (which I know nothing about). Standouts for me were Little Child Runnin Wild, Pusherman, Freddie’s Dead, and Superfly. That said, the instrumental tracks are also amazing, definitely not to be skipped.

Confident and smooth! I would relisten to this, especially on a slow evening when I am cooking or crafting, or during a sunset drive.

Why Couldn't They Just Let Me Be? 1001 Albums Generator 128 (09/29/2025) Superfly is Curtis Mayfield's third studio album and was released as a soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film "Super Fly" in 1972. This album is equal parts soul and funk, and it blends these elements together wonderfully. The orchestration throughout is also extremely lush, which is a common feature of this style of Chicago Soul. I have never seen the film that this is a soundtrack for, but I can imagine exactly what it's like. Curtis does a great job of creating a world in his music. With that said, the second instrumental, Think, is quite boring. Some songs, such as Give Me Your Love and Eddie You Should Know Better, are also not very memorable, but overall, this album has a great flow and it is so short and snappy that I can't be mad. 4/5. Favs: Little Child Runnin' Wild Freddie's Dead No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) Least Fav: Think

That was a groovy record!

I've known of this movie forever, but I still haven't checked it out yet. Gotta change that immediately. Gave this one a listen during a night drive down PCH and felt like a pimp the entire time.

Man this is like the 3rd album this week where I hear the word nigger or nigga. lol Pusherman is cool. fuckin coke man. I love this 70's disco sound. Reminds me of Boogie Nights or Tarantino movies. This was pretty good. 4 stars.

Masterfully groovy 4

Superb slice of soul music. Never seen the film the album is the soundtrack for, but the tracklist is super clean, energetic, and groovy. I love the flow of the album and the overall vibe, the bass lines and guitar work are fantastic, overlayed with the iconic vocals.

Groovy. 4/5 Highlights: Pusherman Freddie's Dead No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) Superfly

CURTIS. CANT. MISS. (so far)

Banger

Chill music, nice to listen to

Great sound, nicely latered with a few really standout tracks

Really good start, 4/5

Très bon

A funk classic! 4/5 #185

Banging when you're in the mood for some soul, which should be always.

Funkadelic. This album beautifully illustrates the dichotomy between the swag/style of the black community while also portraying the constant struggle the people face. It is a tight rope between being proud of who you are and being trapped in a system that you did not create. Truly a tragic irony behind the beats but once that’s stripped away it’s a cautionary tale.

A little too short with some of the interludes but is interesting and smooth and great

Very cool, felt like Starsky and Hutch. Pusherman is especially good.

super Funky. Some highs and lows Mostly highs

Nota: 3.6

Yeahhh

This album put me in such a good mood

This a fun, groovy soul movie soundtrack typical of the blaxploitation film genre.

Pusherman is one of the coolest songs of all time. Why do we not exist in a time now where mint artists made albums for movies? 4.2/5

Great vibe. Really enjoyed it. [only listened to half, though]

Pretty enjoyable album. Don't really have much to say, but overall enjoyable, if a little forgettable.

It is insane to me that people really only know him for his debut album and the Superfly soundtrack when he has a discography full of wonderful music. This album is nothing short of badass with a Soul sound to really help capture the Blaxploitation era of films this soundtrack was inspired by so beautifully. It has also very much set a standard for original soundtracks and still impresses over 50 years later. There is instrumental tracks here and there is also plenty of Curtis' sweet and silky voice to help make this album come off so smooth. As with any soundtrack it can feel a bit all over the place but man does it also do a really good job of stringing everything together. Even if you don't really like soundtracks I would totally give this one a shot as it not only defined the 70s beautifully with the production here but has also become somewhat of a timeless classic through plenty of sampling. Thank you Curtis for yet another wonderful contribution!!

Growing on me.

It was decent, very cool album, also very short. Absolutely iconic in places.

Amazing how the production can be so lush, with a full band, strings, horns…without sounding ostentatious or over-the-top

First time I’ve had the same artist back to back. A vast improvement on yesterday’s album. In saying that, they weren’t exactly bad but I wasn’t too fussed on the instrumental tracks. Take them out and I’m probably giving this a 5. Top Tracks - Pusherman and Freddies Dead

I’m getting so tired of writing little reviews. It was good.

Great vocals, great songwriting.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Pusherman I thought this album was pretty chill. It's definitely from a time and place that no longer exists. Everything these days is R&B, rap, pop and modern rock music. There's almost nothing being produced anymore that fits into this genre, or certainly nothing showing up in the current zeitgeist or culture of "mainstream " entertainment. It was refreshing to hear this.

4 estrelas . Soul sweet genius

fun to listen to

very groovy, i really like this!

Smooth - great vibes

I know this is the soundtrack of a specific movie but it feels like the soundtrack to 95% of all movies from the 70's. A great listen.

Oh yeah THIS is music. Raw instrumentation and storytelling. Love it.

Slapped.

Tosi hyvää rentoa taustamusaa! Albumissa kivasti vaihtelua instrumentaalisten kappaleiden ansiosta. Pidin muissakin biiseissä erityisesti instrumentaaliosioista ja niiden rennosta rytmisyydestä. Klassinen 70-luvun soul and funk jatkoon!!

An effortlessly cool album. I really gotta watch the Superfly film that accompanies this album. Favorite track: Pusherman

Beautiful, clean, funky and with story telling lyrics

fun and jazzy

One of the best soundtracks.

Something that always gets me about the funk and soul music coming out of this era is how *free* it feels. It's loose but everyone feels fully engaged and each instrument and note *matters*. Curtis, like Stevie Wonder and Al Green and all the rest, channels his vocals from some deep place that sounds like they're all being made up for the very first time but that every throwaway change of energy or volume or extra oomph is thoughtfully considered, like he's less performing than letting it erupt from some visceral place in his psyche. If this is rehearsed to the point of perfection, no one is giving less than 100%. It's really magical. And even with all of those many, many instruments and elements going on, the arrangements and mixing are perfect -- drawing your attention right where it needs to be, and hiding little surprises and fills deep in the mix for discovery upon repeat listens. Completely unrelated: is this the only movie soundtrack I've listened to dozens of times without ever bothering to actually see the movie it's soundtracking? I wonder how would my appreciation of it change if I understood where it was situated.

Album No. 0005 on my list. I‘ve heared the name Curtis Mayfield before and had a rough idea about what music he had been doing, but that’s about it. Superfly is a very cool soundtrack album - catchy, exciting, but also somewhat laid back, interestingly. Very cool 70s vibes, very cool, very decent lyrics. Will certainly listen again- 4/5 stars!

3.5 as it's own album, 5 as a soundtrack = 4 overall

Wonderful album, lyrics and delivery is excellent. Soulfully haunting in places

super solid! 4/5

so so good

One of the 70s soundtracks that were miles better then the movies they were for. I really enjoyed listening to this one.

I listened to this while traveling which I think is what you need for this. It's music to move to, to feel time passing, to be amongst something. A celebration of life.

Feeling!

Never a soundtrack like this one!

I have become cooler from simply listening to this album.

Guitars that yell at you, horns that announce their presence, drum swagger heartbeat and a voice that narrates with genuine honest soul and authenticity.

Funky, and I might even go as far as to say, Fresh.

That was excellent and obviously influential

The actual Superfly song is ok, but the first few tracks really slap.

The vibe is pretty good, which I don't often say for funky kind of thing like this. But he does it well.

Cool, I liked it but I also already forgot about it...

A powerful blend of streetwise funk and socially conscious soul. Mayfield’s falsetto floats over gritty grooves, delivering sharp commentary on drugs, poverty, and survival. 𝘗𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯 and 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘦’𝘴 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥 are undeniable highlights, but the entire album flows with purpose. More than a soundtrack — this is protest music disguised as cool.

This was a good time. Funky (naturally) with good instrumentation. He has a real nice voice. 3.5 rounded up

Part 2 of Marvin Gaye’s inner city blues. Important album brings counter culture in the black community. Songs about junkies, dealers, and pimps/gangsters. Album is and extension to the super fly soundtrack, but the message is clear “We can all deal with rockets (NASA) and dreams (MLK), but reality, what does it mean?”

Me divertí mucho.

Definitely a classic. Amazing that this is a soundtrack - it feels more like a fully fledged concept album. I’m sure I need to watch the movie to fully grasp this one.

cool as hell!!! curious to watch the film

Groovy.

I love when the lyrics sound like are describe a movie plot of sick music

That there’s about as smooth and chill as R&B ever was. Gotta give him credit for his ability to make even the elevator song cool!

Smooth and chill vocals with a cool sound with brass and saxophones supporting.

Such a vibe, great soundtrack

gotta love funk

“Super Fly” is right!

I added the two instrumentals to my Liked Songs playlist. Junkie Chase gave me Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop) vibes. I also want to check out the movie now.

Had this on again this morning. Very cool record and spotify kept the Sunday vibes going with a very groovy playlist

If I never see the full movie I at least want to see the Junkie Chase scene as that song was ace. Rest was good too.

Not exactly my kind of music but enjoyable all the same.

A very fun album, with a incredible clean sound. Everything, from the voice, to the horns and to the guitars, sounds superb. The rhythm and melodies are very infectious, making my body move for the whole duration of the album. If I had a deeper connection with this album, I would consider giving it 5 stars, but for the moment, I'll give it 4 just for making me wanting to get up and groove to the music.

Funky 7/10

SMOOOOOTH

Great album

Fantastic! It makes sense they call him the "Gentle Genius."

expected this to be like a movie score but 1) it isn't and 2) holy fuck this is absolutely overflowing with emotion. the title track "superfly" is the most popular but it's honestly kind of comparatively weak favorite song: "freddie's dead" overall: 8/10

Groovy good. Was a bit skeptical when I saw it was a movie soundtrack, but it is jam packed with great tunes and beautiful singing. Lyrics are also profound.

The instrumentals capture the rythm of every day life with its subtle, smooth, slightly melancholic groove. Superimpose a story of the everyday woes caused by impoverishment and drug abuse and you get a very touching work indeed.

butter

Favorites: Pusherman, groovy

Funky fresh

Absolute vibe. Easy to see why this record was so successful, it’s a top tier soul/funk record. No skips, let it ride.

Really funky and enjoyable

I think the delivery of some of the lines in this album are hilarious. The listen while on a drive made me feel like I was in a spy movie.

Solid. 👌

Solid album. Pusher man.

Probably 4, but wouldn't actively choose to listen

Pretty funky. Kanye sample

Not as hard as Curtis to me but still great.

This was sweet Super funky and groovy

Mostly amazing

I don't usually listen to this type of music but I loved having it in the background as we cooked and cleaned.

Very cool

I really enjoyed this. I only knew the title track going in but the whole record felt familiar in the best way. No bad songs, just funky 70s soul vibes. I love his voice.

Really good soft rock jazz album thoroughly enjoyed

Another soul/funk album that is just impossibly cool. It’s not really within my usual wheelhouse but I’ve enjoyed it a number of times over the week. And the title track, as well as giving me a ‘spot the Beastie Boys sample!’ moment, is absolutely brilliant.

It's Curtis Mayfield; it's brilliant. Pusherman = Eminem (I'm Shady) Superfly = Nelly (Tilt Ya Head Back)

Oh hell yeah. This one ruled. Smooth as a mofo.

Pretty good but not a favourite

Smoother than a new born babies skin…

I've always Curtis Mayfield more reliable than Isaac Hayes, and this soundtrack supports that. While Isaac;'s Shaft is awesome, the rest of thatsoundtrack / album really does pale in comparison. Superfly, however is consistently very good or excellent. A true Blacksploitation classic.

A great soundtrack and a great standalone piece of work

Still sounds both of its time and timeless wonderful soundtrack and album.

Definite classic - the Blacksploitation soundtrack. Total funk

I threw this one on not expecting an in-depth listen. I know the title track, I know the concept, but it always just kind of seemed like a promo movie thing. Surely there wasn’t any depth to it. I was wrong. The tracks are smooth, instrumentation is great, and lyrics tackle the full picture of the struggles Mayfield saw at the time.

Pusherman goated. Super fun record. Solid 4/4.5

Great album! Maybe I'll consider watching the film to see how the songs line up with it.

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield A new one for me. Immediately compared it to What’s Going On and on first listen I felt it was far inferior. I still think it the lesser album but there’s plenty of brilliance here, even if some of the tracks feel like one or two ideas repeated. The percussion and brass and strings and the mixing of all that sound is a real highlight.

Listened to this on my phone and the last half in the truck via YouTube Music. The instrumental tracks Junkie Chase and Think were cool. The album has fairly long jammy tracks. Would be interesting to see all the rap albums that have sampled or taken inspiration from this soundtrack and movie.

Great vibes.

I have not seen the movie, but I may now after listening to this.

Little Child Runnin' Wild <3

Can’t beat that funky 70s soul sound

Solid and overall enjoyable, but not particularly memorable to me. Good instrumentals with fitting vocal work.

I did not use a private session for this one. I knew a lot of the tracks on this album, but don't know if I ever sat a listened to it. Now that I have, I will have to listen to it more. Funky, upbeat and bad-ass.

I listen to this a few times and just feeling it

Another soul album with great social commentary. Pusherman and Freddie’s Dead stood out to me, the characterisation involved I really enjoyed. I slightly prefer Marvin Gaye’s style, probably the closest comparison and very much a contemporary but I’d happily listen again.

Anything so massively cocaine fueled is an automatic 4 or 5

This is a upbeat jazzy soul album that seems like it’s a soundtrack to a film which unfortunately I haven’t seen. However I really loved the music, enough so that I would consider watching the movie (Im not a huge movie person.) The emotions were strong in this album. It was a mix of lyrical and instrumental songs.

Album art: 2. Would probably rank this album a 5 if it was a Saturday morning not a Monday night.

The combination of studio synths, soul and Curtis Mayfield is excellent. Occasionally you feel the limitations of following the storyline. Still, really enjoyable

Funky superfly

I enjoyed this one. Great length. I didn’t realize Pusha Man from Acid Rap was based on Pusherman from this album.

7/10 - this was nice. It wa quite relaxing and fun to listen to. Even tho it wasn’t a gym album it was fun

Liked it a lot

Interesting old school soul

Enjoyed this album.

Ultra cool.

Yeah this is one of them ones

3.75/5 enjoyed the songs and the vibes but nothing crazy groundbreaking here

What a cool album. Mayfield has such a silky smooth soul sound. Such an emblematic sound of the 70s. I had a lot of fun listening to this one, but I do have to say that it got a bit repetitive at times. That doesn't bother me so much because I really like the sound but I think a lack of variety is going to stop me from giving it a five here.

nice funk songs and great vocals from Mayfield. 7,5/10. fav songs : Little Child Running Wild & No thing on me

I just love the bass and drums at the beginning of Pusherman and Superfly. Little Child Running, No Thing on Me, Freddie's Dead also great songs. Easy listening grooviness. That 70's orchestra sound though keeps this from being a five for me.

Solid. Enjoyed this one. Now I need to watch the movie.

Enjoyable soul!

Great soulful, energetic sound track with some great songs from Curtis. I'd love to hear more of his work.

Very enjoyable! Little Child Runnin Wild and Pusherman are definitely going on my 1001 albums playlist. The rest of the album is fine, couple of instrumental tracks since its a movie soundtrack and Superfly is fun but nothing crazy for me. Would listen to again.

Liked this soulful one!

5 sterne

His voice is so smooth, beautiful soul and funk songs, lyrically quite deep, will need more listens

5/13/2025:Classic funk, bangers

Like exploitation films, there is a rawness here that’s not necessarily bad, just true. Good to return to every now and again.

Pretty good stuff. Will probably enjoy it more on future listens.

Superb

Yeah this is great and I’ll definitely be returning.

Curtis has one of the most instantly recognizable voices from this era. Great, funky tunes, plenty of conscious lyrics, an orchestra,.and a perfect rhythm section. It's hard not to bob your head and tap your feet to this. I loved this, having only heard two songs previously. Side note: I recognized a sample of Freddie's Dead from a song by a rap duo I listened to quite a lot in the early 90s: Poison Clan ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love the vocals on 'Pusherman'. "Junkie Chase" and "Think" were great instrumentals. The songs were pretty similar across the album, but they were good. Curtis Mayfield has a very distinctive voice and singing style. I'll have to watch the movie. 7/10

A fantastic collection of funky soul with gritty lyrics influenced by the mean streets of 1970s USA.

Very nice. Groovy, well-balanced and fun.

This album is awesome. It might have something to do with the fact that I am off work today. Weather is great, driving around with the windows rolled down. I’m not gonna let the fact that I’m white dude in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood take anything away from this for me. Not super keen on the first song. 2 and three great. Has anyone seen superfly? Not me. I think I saw Shaft. Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green - especially Al Green - these guys have been in my rotation for a while. Not sure how I missed Curtis Mayfield but thank you 1001 for rectifying that. The album grooves. It’s a good listen.

Now I need to see the movie

9/10 Superfly is one of a kind. Funky and fun lyrics and a jam to listen to. I can see myself rating this perfect in the future, I’d just need some more listens. Mayfield had a great performance and the production was like candy at certain sections

Very good. Almost 5 star. Favorite song: superfly

Very soulful, groovy, and makes me envision cruising around town in a convertible en route to the disco circa 1979. Will be added to the musical rotation.

Really entertaining and a fun listen, enjoyed most of the album.

It’s so interesting to me when albums that are presented as a solo artist vocal album have entire instrumental songs. Nonetheless, this was groovy easy listening front-to-back.

Good vibes

Very suave and smooth album. So funky. I listen to these albums during my morning commutes so this album made me feel like I was in a chase. Made my drive a lot more entertaining. Extremely fitting soundtrack for a movie called Super Fly.

I think that on the whole, we have not celebrated this album enough. Is it because it’s a movie score? You could’ve fooled me. This record is full of harrowing lamentations of the black experience, coupled with some of the most vibrant, beautiful, dramatic instrumental arrangements. Hearing this album with ears trained by 2020’s pop/hiphop/rap makes me think about how ripe for sampling and referencing these songs are. The string ending of “Little Child Runnin Wild” sounds like it inspired Kanye Wests “Flashing Lights” a good bit. And my goodness how many times has “Pusherman” been interpolated or referenced throughout the lexicon of rap and hiphop culture - I’m looking at you, Pusha T. No record of its time is complete without a bossa-nova-leaning love song, and “Give Me Your Love” does it well. I think the passage in “Freddie’s Dead” sums up Superfly’s messaging best: “We're all built up with progress But sometimes I must confess We can deal with rockets and dreams But reality What does it mean? Ain't nothing said 'Cause freddies dead” Powerful, colorful, substantial, soulful, and groovy all at once!

I had a beloved dog called Freddie, and the fact that this album, containing as it does a (great) song called Freddie's Dead, still fills me with joy is quite remarkable. Much like the dog, it's great fun, a tiny bit unhinged and is assured of its legacy in the pantheon of the greats.

Funky, sexy, grimy, and vivid.

Didn't expect much from a 1972 movie soundtrack, but this was really enjoyable!

oh I have listened to this one before! It’s funky and you can figure out the story. Great album to have in Prince day!

SMOOOOOTH.

Smooth. Curtis' bong player doesn't get enough respect. And the dude can sing.

Very pleasant

bro cooked

Beautiful soul and story telling

Listened to this for the first time while mowing the lawn, the second time while working out in my bedroom. Fire stuff.

Smoooooooooth! "Think" is a Jam!

Very nice. It was superfly.

If this album doesn't put a little funk in your step nothing will.

I got U2 for my first album and about quit this project one album in. I'm glad that I got Superfly as my second; I listened to it three times yesterday and was surprised at how well it holds up. Way better than Joshua Tree.

Amazing, obviously, but somehow doesn't land for me like other Curtis.

Absolutely stunning album, I love the thought-provoking commentary throughout the album with Curtis critiquing on the various issues plaguing the black community. At some parts you get smooth, sensual, and blissful. Most of the album is hard hitting, thoughtful, soulful, funky, and a dash of spirituality thrown in there. Great overall. Favs: Pusherman, Give Me Your Love, Eddie You Should Know Better, Think - Instrumental, and Superfly 4.50/5

Oh this was groovy af and really nice to listen to while playing mc with the bf

Just superb on multiple levels, groove, lyric content, instrumentation and arrangements. Mayfield is a poet. 4 Star

Funky, bold and simply great music. Excellent.

tuvo bueno

cool 70s soul/funk

Had a nice feel about it, some things felt a bit too long but it made up for it in the limited track list. 4 stars

Excellent development of the soul sound in the 70s. 3.5/5

The music: 🕺 The lyrics: 💀

I dig the grooviness of the tunes, I would give it a 3.7 which rounds to a 4. Best album so far.

Great funky soundtrack! The opening line in Pusherman caught me off guard which was a funny way to start such a great funky song. Overall I'm probably going to drive with this album playing in the background at all times.

Loved this. Great vibes.

So groovy

Cool, groovy, fun! Kinda 1 dimensional? 3.9

cool as fuck

Paragon, perhaps flawless in making gilded, sumptuous music around hard lives related, this record makes me feel like I’m admiring it from the outside, peering into a glass display case.

This one was even better than expected 😎

This was a great album, super fun to listen to

This was really fun and groovy sounding, and socially conscious too for a movie soundtrack. Made me wanna check out superfly. 3.8/5. Fav song: Pusherman

Hip and groovy, sweet and funky, this is so easy to dig for reasons of fluidity. The guitar is particularly strong but the string flourishes, drumming and keys are all well judged and additive throughout.

finally some good music.

Superfly is so goddamn fun. I remember hearing "Pusherman" used in the movie, The Hebrew Hammer, and it stuck with me ever since. Curtis Mayfield's voice is silk smooth and super cool.

Superfly and Shaft should duke it out in the alley. So smooth and beautiful

The whole time I felt like a detective in a 70’s cop show. Hell of a vibe

Robust, wonderful, jazzy. The instrumentals are great on their own and it's all incredibly easy to listen to. Of course I hear the overall anti-drug message. Pusherman and No Thing On Me were easy to add to my likes. A little dare-ish at times but delivered honestly and bluntly.

Just a fun and funky ride.

That baseline is just forever imprinted in my brain

This was a fun album. If more funk and disco were like this, I'd like the whole genre more.

Really enjoyed this one but it didn't blow me a way. Seemed to lose some steam mid album. Standouts: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Superfly Rating: 4/5

Awesome 👍👍

A solid funk & soul album that comments on cultural problems of urban poverty, most drug dealing and use. The rhythms are smooth, the instrumental playing is razor sharp, and arrangements are lush and layered. Mayfield’s high voice cutting through the butter like a hot knife. Not every track is memorable, but overall a good album.

vibe. jazz, slowish but not too much. calming. nice overall.

Superfly.

Not my style but surprisingly pleasant. This feels comfortable, like if music were a sofa, maybe a little in contrast with its themes. Three and one half out of five.

500th Record - just funky beats and cool vibes. Ain’t nothing to complain about on this record.

I really enjoyed!

Just very cool. I was a bit skeptical in the first track or 2 but damn I was worried about nothing. Geat songs.

Another soundtrack chosen seemingly at random. I like it!

3.5 stars

I went in thinking I would be lukewarm on this one, but it's fantastic. I've never been a fan of Mayfield's falsetto, but he doesn't lean on it here and the music is so good--every song is solid. This would be 4.5 for me, maybe someday a 5.

Nice, what a super smooth album. I’m not generally into the soul/funk thing, but whatever happened here was a perfect musical balance to what is quite the melancholy lyrical vibe. Given the themes it could be quite angry but instead his voice just welcome you in to listen to the story. It just feels very unique to me. Love the ‘songs’ e.g. the opening 3 and the ending.

This is a pretty special album. I love Curtis' debut and was planning on listening to this one for a long time. To be honest, I still think the debut has an edge on it, but not by much. It is a very good record. Great band, awesome vocals. It made me want to see the film, and I will soon, I hope. Cool one, indeed.

I love that this was made for a now barely known blaxploitation film. It is a really high quality album. I always liked how Mayfield looked like a bit of a nerd but his voice was amazing

really good

I was not expecting the soundtrack to a Blaxplotation film to be on this list, but the fact that I could identify exactly what the music was without looking it up tells me exactly why it is on this list. This album was a great listen, and I can see why the best songs went on to surpass the legacy of the film itself. And the music is effective without being cliche. At one point I asked myself if a song was chase music, only to look at the track title and see that it was in fact the backing audio for a chase scene. It was done well, the music is a groove, and despite the genre relying on exploitation, the music felt original and fresh.

Funky as hell with poignant lyrics.

Good album. Horn section is tight.

Really good anti-drug funk album. Highlights are "Freddie's Dead," "Give Me Your Love" and "Think - Instrumental". Slows down a bit in the middle (particularly "Eddie You Should Know Better" and "No Thing on Me." Overall, kind of an odd, funky, enjoyable listening experience. Love the instrumentation and Mayfield's falseto.

The heist… Is… On. Funky, political, and with a voice so distinct and groooovy. My not-so-hot take is I prefer this to What’s Going On.

This is probably only a 3 for me, but it is following a Kid Rock album, and therefore a 4 seems fair.

Curtis Mayfield's voice is as smooth as butter. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this.

Funky, cinematic, and smooth as hell. The grooves **feel** like they belong in a ‘70s crime flick. Oh, wait... Lush strings, tight percussion, and that voice - sharp, urgent, untouchable. It’s like if Marvin Gaye got fed up and went full activist with a grittier, harder edge. The basslines alone could fuel a revolution. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - Pusherman - Freddie's Dead - Junkie Chase - Give Me Your Love - Think - Superfly

I have never seen the film "Super Fly", but I am familiar with the lead single and "Pusherman" here. These blaxploitation films from the 70's tackled social justice whilst giving us some legendary soul music as a soundtrack (with said soundtracks overshadowing the films most of the time). "Superfly" follows in the same vein and makes for a smooth ride, with instrumentals and chart-topping singles alike.

Such a cool album. A few songs stick out as great, most just float past pleasantly in the ear.

i loved the instrumentals and the production

Bro is too smooth with it. Pusherman is such a great song! it flows so naturally and makes me feel like Rick James on a red carpet on cocaine.

So pumped on it I had to find a peloton class with some Curtis Mayfield.

Cool album, but the falsetto was a bit grating after a while.

Turns out that this is a stellar record! Knew the hits, but so much more to discover.

Delicious

I've listened before but this is a nice record

Much better than I thought it was going to be. There were bits and pieces that have been sampled by later artists and were fun to hear in their original form.

great album, respect the culture

This was great! Funk and very catchy. Already replayed it!

Funky.

The perfect album to start the week with! smooth funk at its best, and random trivia tidbit that the OST album outperformed the movie it was from. Definitely worth a listen, and even a few more. 4/5

Fantastic, suave and jazzy with some lyrical interest and nice movie tension

Good album 4/5

Would listen again, definition of cool, get up and dance! Favorites: Freddie’s dead, superfly, Pusherman

Now this is an album of its time!! But…it still sounds so cool!

Bara positivitet. Lowkey gamla film vibes också, Austin powers fast svarta, 60 tals klubb/fight musik YEAH BABY type shit.

Classic banger

So I was in an Oldsmobile with my friend, a guy you just don't associate with dating and we were with this woman, I don't know who, I couldn't see her face and she kept putting me down, but not in a mean way, bc she was totally into my friend. I would be talking to her and I'd get stuck in these traps. Like old-school Wonder Woman bandage type traps. Idk how I escaped but u did and we were at a restaurant that had live snakes dine with us and I kept looking out to make sure these snakes wouldn't eat my cats. The servers would feed the snakes mice and I was slightly repulsed so I we t outside and was trapped in the ocean.

Very well done. I really like the general feeling of the album, and the lyrics were just very clever.

Very groovy album, really makes you feel a bit like you're watching a movie as you listen along to it, which makes sense with it being a soundtrack album! More than anything though, kind of made me feel like playing Driver: Parallel Lines. Not sure if that's random or not - Pushaman might be on the soundtrack for that, but don't quote me.

It is funky and fun to listen to but deep and layered music and lyrics. I have to watch the movie.

Liking these soul/funk albums. 4/5

Groovy album. Love the style

I like the beat its a very joyful vibe. I like the genre seems very like instrumental but theyres still lyrics. Second song has the same energy as the first. I like how its based off of someone, gives the song background. I recommend this album.

Do you like listening to upbeat songs? I like this album because it's catchy and has a good beat. I would recommend this album if you like music similar to hip-hop.

Do you want to listen to where one person does almost every instrument? Well in pusher man you can! I rate ⭐⭐⭐ because it could be inappropriate. I don't recommend it. Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar, electric guitar etc.? Well in Freddie's dead you can! I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend it. Do you want to listen to music with some bongos? Well in SuperFly you can! I rate it ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend it!

Butter. So much funk. So sampled.

Close your eyes, and you’re transported to a 70’s love nest. Enjoyed this more than I expected to.

Sehr Dynamisch. Fav Tracks: Freddies Dead, Pusherman, Least Fav Tracks: Think

Very cool, very funky, I like the directness of the messaging. I don't really know anything about the film except that it exists. It's good that the music can standalone. Faves: Pusherman, Freddie's Dead

Great 4.1

Have grown to really appreciate Curtis Mayfield. Love this.

Certified funky fresh.

pretty dope funk/soul
