Funkayyyy

Superfly manages to be super smooth but also deep and gritty at the same time, the result of some brilliant musicianship and great writing of themes that smack you in the face, whether you've lived them or not. Even the instrumentals are quality in that they're not filler, they add something to the record and are a part of the journey. It's a high high 4, was tempted to give it a 5 but the falsetto grates just too much, but it's excellent.

This was super, enjoyed this a lot. Great funk base to a lot of it, he has a great voice that adds plenty of soul, and this album tells some really good stories. Definitely will be revisiting this, an easy 4/5.

Enjoyed listening to this. Don't mind a bit of 70's funky soul, and this is definitely that. Liked it

Really enjoyable listen. Must be one of my favourite albums I’d never heard discovered so far on this list.

Listened to on 1/21/25, this was a decent album in all honesty. The music was very soft and jazzy (obviously) which was pretty nice but some of the songs were definitely more boring than others. "Superfly" and "Freddie's Dead" were two standouts, they were unique and fun. The instrumentals were ok. Maybe today, I just was not feeling the soul music but regardless, a good album. I would rate it 4/5.

Nice easy listening and background music. May be better on repeat listenings and more active listening. 3.5

Album 654 of 1001 Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (1972) Rating : 4 / 5 Awesome mix of soul, funk, and psychedelic sounds. Arrangements are great. Innovative sound and impactful lyrics. If I want some funky soul, this is likely the one I'll go to.

There is some gold here. I liked a review of this album that basically sells Superfly as “chill funk”. Pusherman and Superfly are obvious standouts. Give Me Your Love and No Thing On Me were my favorite deeper cuts. Some research to do: * actually watch the film * find the weird drums that were used that had some kind of pitch shift device on it (very eastern sounding)

I’ve never seen Superfly, but fun to hear the story throughout the soundtrack. I might like this a bit more than the Marvin we’ve gotten. Loved Pusherman, Superfly, and Think. Might enjoy this more once I’ve seen the movie.

This is extremely groovy.

This grew and grew on me. The title song absolutely slaps, Pusherman is a classic, but couldn’t say where I’d heard it before (probably everywhere). I feel cooler for listening to this album. This could make 5 stars with further listens, and further listens it will get 4/5

What a fantastic soul/funk album. Smooth 70s funk, loved it

4 groovy

Very cool, plenty of funk and soul.

it's nice with it, what more can you say

Not a bad jam from beginning to end.

superfly

Great album, have it on vinyl, my wife doesn’t love it because it sounds “too 70s porn”. That’s why I like it.

Already loved superfly and pusher man before listening but listening to the whole album made me appreciate it far more. I didn’t know this was a soundtrack album. It makes sense as the lyrics tell a clear story. It’s so funky that it doesn’t feel preachy or tragic despite the story. Loved overall

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiittt.

Almost too much falsetto and funk. ALMOST.

This is one of the best movie soundtracks, felt like a badass driving to this. Sick sample in Eddie you should know better.

Fantastic funk/soul mix! 4/5

lot of fun vibes, classic representation of this style of music. Favorite track: Little child runnin' wild other picks: pusher man, Freddie's dead, superfly

Love this. Strange fact… I own a copy of this on vinyl that used to belong to Richard Donner of Lethal Weapon fame

Pretty cool album tbh. Liked a lot of it

This was a fine listen! 4/5

Pretty good.

Funky delight

Super funky, super divertido, me encantó. Total del álbum: 84

Love Curtis Mayfield. This is Soul Music.

Curtis Mayfield is a national treasure. Love this one. Reminds me there’s so much of his catalogue that I need to go back and listen to again. And of course …Egg man…

Great soul/funk album, my journey to reach 1001 starts here!

I love 60's and 70's psychedelic soul/funk, Stax records hard hitters, even the industrial Motown stuff and the cool soundtracks that exploitation movies brought along. Superfly hits a bit different because the music is made for a movie, it's got it's moments for sure, but soundtrack isn't the best platform for a cohesive whole of an album. Musicianship is top notch, production likewise and it all sounds amazing.

Opening track, Little Child Runnin' Wild, opens on a soulful narrative tone. Loving the overall vibe. Pusherman continues in a similar vein over a bright funky groove. Junkie Chase is a fantastic "Shaft-like" instrumental that has become a sort of parody of crime/police films of the 70s. Love it all the same. Give Me Your Love is a laid back and dreamy soulful jam. Oh man, I have never heard the original Superfly before -- only know it from Beastie Boy's prominent sampling of it "Eggman." This was solid front to back. Not really something I typically go in for, but very enjoyable. Not sure I'll be back quickly, but I enjoyed the ride. Solid 4 / 5

Bring on da funk! Smooth as butter. Really liked "Think" as a standout to an already great album.

So much funk recently and I am here for it. I see Maggot Brain is next as well so lets just keep it rolling. This album was so smooth and so funky. All that needs to be said

Funk and soul album that does what it says on the tin. I enjoyed the complexity of the music. Recommend!

Прикольное

Previously rated: There's No Place Like America Today (3/5) ********************************************* Second time hearing this album. Haven't seen the film. There's no mistaking which decade this music belongs to with the strings and the wocka-ch-wocka guitar. It's funky as heck and pretty enjoyable over all.

Has scho cool gfunde aber nöd meega aktiv glost, drum chli schwierig zum sege. Tüüfs 4i für mich

flötul!

Rocked. Tight drums, soaring strings, funky bass, flighty flute lines. soundtrack evoking 70s harlem scapes

Wow! This album is very atmospheric. So much going on rhythm and instrument-wise. As a whole a very harmonious album with a groovy soul/funk feel. I live for this, so many new favorites!

классно расслабляет, но не цепляет. ели макароны и слушали с вадимчиком

uppfylling inn á milli, sándtrakk, en topparnir ná hátt. 4,5.

unparalleled swag mr. mayfield

Curtis Mayfield did not have to go as hard as he did for a movie soundtrack, but we're all lucky he did.

I'd probably give this 3.5 stars, if I could, because the music is very good, and the production is amazing, but it really is not my type of music or something I get excited about. However, I understand the appeal and the musicianship and songwriting, and I do respect it.

8/10 Dobar stari Curtis. Odlican spoj soula i funka i album, odnosno soundtrack s kojim cu se uskoro ponovno druzit, posto planiram napokon pogledati film.

Funk/soul is not in my wheelhouse, but this impressed me.

Couldn’t decide whether to give this a 5 or not as it’s pretty perfect. The whole thing sounds so smooth and the instrumentals are ‘70s studio musicians at their best

That thundercat guy should listen to this more. I know he already had, but big Curtis manages to actually vary up his melodies and tell interesting stories, and the bass while simpler goes soooo much harder. Pauls boutique sample - full circle!

bit repetitive, sexy spy 60s vibes. think was a really good song, muy bueno. objectively good, subjectively i found it a bit boring in the length.

Wow that was super funky, and a really fun album. I had never seen the movie before and know that this was a soundtrack, so it makes me want to go watch it now.

groovy

This album changes my energy and mood in a good way.

Yes to politically conscious funk

Groooooooovy

Really good for a movie soundtrack. It conveys, what I believe to be, the plot of the movie while maintaining its own identity.

Blacksplotation eran hade så många bra album!

Surprisingly deep and depressing that we're still trying to deal with all this shit.

Super slick offering by Curtis.

instrumentali begleitig eifach chefs kisses it was so nice, i listened twice

Great album facing a really dark subject but with compassion; see 'Freddies dead'. Love the arrangements perhaps over-orchestrated but the percussion is great and the voice suits this style. I like the first two tracks, especially 'Pusherman'. Not usually a fan of soul but this early example really works for me. The last 2 tracks are also great; where does the 'think' instrumental come from? - love it but its certainly out of the context of the album as a whole. I don't know what came first -the album or the film (which I've never seen) but this certainly comes over as cinematic and I can hear it would be perfect for a film.

Really good, feels heavily entwined with later descriptions of inner city living and effects of drugs

Just effortlessly cool and smooth.

He has a great band. Most of these songs are great. I forgot about Freddie's Dead.

Smooth soul on display here with some good funk layered on top and I’m down for it. This was a fun listen with some great tracks. Starts really strong with the first 3 jams and dips slightly energy wise in the middle and finishes strong with the title track. Such a great beat on the closing track, now I know where Beastie Boys got their sample for Egg Man. 4 stars

Lost my attention about 2/3rds through but I didn't hate it

A great fusion of R&B and soul. It's such a good stand-alone album even though it's a soundtrack to a movie. It contains very socially critical lyrics and thought provoking themes.

I’m not always a big fan of film albums. This however, was pretty great.

a classic, and the sound is undeniable. not sure I feel the lyrics as hard as critics seem to, but whatever. funk forever

I'm not really into Curtis Mayfield's love for falsetto, but this is still a very fun yet weighty album with a crystal-clear concept. Strong melodies and rhythms. Best song: No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)

Track 1: Little Child Runnin' Wild (7/10) Love me the funky junk, the fact that this is from a film soundtrack is so cool. On a side note, I've been meaning to watch Superfly for years now, and I think this'll give me the motivation to see it just to see how they use these songs. Track 2: Pusherman (9/10) Damn, this one is a banger. Love the lyrics and the percussion. Track 3: Freddie's Dead (8/10) The strings are to die for! And is that a flute? Great instrumentation. Track 4: Junkie Chase (7/10) The funk flows through this short little instrumental that's obviously used in the movie for a chase scene. Very fun. Track 5: Give Me Your Love (Love Song) (7/10) The fun part of listening to this soundtrack is trying to figure out what kind of scene each song is from. I have a theory this is from a sex scene lol It would work perfectly in the background of gettin' freak-ay. Track 6: Eddie You Should Know Better (7/10) I haven't mentioned this yet but Curtis Mayfield has a lovely buttery voice. This song has so far been the best showcase of that and it's great. Track 7: No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) (7/10) Continues the funkiness of the other tracks while still feeling fresh. Track 8: Think (9/10) I transcended into another plane of existence while listening to this. Stellar stuff, especially the strings. Track 9: Superfly (8/10) I really thought I might recognize this song but I somehow went my whole life never hearing it lol Lyrically the best song on the album, the bass line had me doing a stank face with how much it funked me up. Overall: 7/10 This was a very consistent album with some obvious standouts. I'm not incredibly well versed in the worlds of soul and funk music, but this makes me want to hear more. I also want to watch the movie now. Fav Song: Think Least Fav Song: Junkie Chase

It was good as bg music

Top soul album. Dit is normaal muziek die ik als achtergrond op leg op een zwoele zomerdag. Maar nu heb ik effectief actief geluisterd en damn... goeie teksten ook! 3.6

A classic

Solid album, better than Shaft and would probably listen to again.

Been in such a huge soul mood recently, so this album hit the spot. Tasty the whole way through!!!!

Cool feeling music

Pusherman Freddie's Dead Superfly

Where Pusherman comes from! Funky, fun, not very long. Very 70's

В этом списке хорошие соул-альбомы. Этот не исключение. Лучшая песня - Superfly.

Soulful and everything you want from Curtis Mayfield. 70s soul funk never seen the film will have to put it on the list and funny how these have transcended from a soundtrack to chart success. Stand out tracks: - Little child running wild - Pusherman - Junkie chase - No thing on me (cocaine song) - Think - Superfly

Love the diverse array of instruments and super fun percussion. Some of the songs are longer than they need to be and others are just repetitive. Altogether a fun album.

Didn't love it. Decent background music but didn't really get me going. Clearly we'll produced and probably groundbreaking at the time but it's one of those things where I think it's just part of culture now.

Smooth!

Wonderful Album. I don't usually listen to soul, but this convinced me to look into it a bit more.

This was very nice

funk personified. so fun.

this was VERY fun. might watch the film later

4 - wish movie soundtracks were like this nowadays, a couple good tracks

So funky

I can get down with this groovy album. Definitely worth another listen.

If I heard this this album without knowing its name, then was asked to give it a name, I would probably name it Superfly

I had to listen to this a couple of times to decide what I really thought of this. I loved this, as a soundtrack it honestly was unreal. As an album it held itself well too. I wanted to give this a 5. I think the only thing that stops me is its' staying power in my head. I can't see myself coming back to this album in a hurry even though I loved it. This is why I hate the 5 star rating system, it would be a 9/10 if I had the option, but alas. Songs like Pusherman (famously sampled by Eminem), Junkie Chase, and Freddie's Dead were standouts, Pusherman is definitely a favourite. I'm gonna go hunt down the film and watch that soon, and maybe it'll tide me over to a 5. If the movies anywhere near as good as this soundtrack; it'll be a great watch.

Damn, that shit was groovy. No wonder it went on to outshine the movie it spawned from. My biggest (and really only) issue is how frontloaded it feels, with my 3 favourites from the album being the first 3 songs. Everything after it feels more incidental and (as it very much is) backing tracks to set pieces of the movie. I think the biggest downside to these is the either lack or absence from Mayfields vocals. That being said the album has a song called Junkie Chase so what the hell am I even doing complaining about this I was also going to review the movie itself as a little side piece but couldn't find a reliable streaming version of it. Highlights Little Child Running Wild Pusherman Freddies Dead

Little Child Running Wild - awesome track, a great start. Saxophone going hard. Pusherman - not my favourite of on the album. Just doesn't reach the same highs as my favourites on this album Freddie's Dead - a standout amongst bangers. Instrumentals are immaculate. Brass section was awesome. Bass guitarist getting a workout. The best tunes have a spicy little flute. Really funky and cool. Totally adore the instrumentals, no critiques. Vocals and lyrics are pretty great overall. Kinda makes me want to watch the movie this is from.

This album was smooth fuck jams and bangers all the way through. Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely listen to it again

Shit review today from me, been super busy, bretty great, no complaints all round good as album. Liked all the track didnt dislike any. Give me your love was my favourite cause it reminded me of Gran Turismo 4

The only song I heard from this album before listening was Pusherman which I heard at a house party of a rich guy I met who studied fine art at QCA (the biggest dickhead you can imagine). I don't have a lot to say about this album other than I really enjoyed it. It was sort of difficult for me to divorce this album from my mental image of Black Dynamite. Listening to this album after having watched this movie is like when you first watch the Shining after having already grown up with the Shinning episode from Simpsons Treehouse of Horror. I am sure overtime as I listen to this album more I will enjoy it a lot more but at the moment I just cannot stop laughing when listening to a song like 'Freddie's Dead' because it makes me think of Black Dynamite's RP-accented brother getting killed by whitey. My closing thoughts will therefore be written in jive. Man, this jam is slick! My brother Mayfield got the vocals swinging. These instrumentals here got dat funky 70s vibe. It’s got just enough kitsch to be more tastefully corny than a can of cream corn. 8/10. Seemed this album was for a film. Great all around vibes throughout.

Rating: 8/10 Very smooth and funky. Best songs: Freddie's Dead, Superfly.

The use of Bongos in Pusherman really got me.

Crazy that a sound track out sells the movie it's for.

Really liked this album - had listened to a few songs off it before but overall like the whole album - feels like it had a central theme and is quintessentially 70’s funk/soul - very groovy and could dance to it

WOW WOW WOW. So fucking funky, no shits given in the titles. So tight, sexy, confidence-inducing. Doesn't feel overdone. 4.4.

Some truly memorable tunes.

A classic

Love the funk.

Wow, there’s a lot more depth here (both musically and lyrically) than I’d expect from a soundtrack. It absolutely is able to stand on its own. A beautiful soul/funk album.

Funky, cool and easy listening. Feeling good this am so going to put this on the 4 side of 3.5

Funk fun

I liked his voice and it was cool that it was a soundtrack, but because of that I feel the instrumental portions felt out of place from the rest of the album.

Timeless and solid

This album was indeed, Superfly. Shit bumped and I really want to see this movie now. Would definitely dip into this again

It’s always hit or miss listening to a soundtrack of a movie I haven’t seen, but I’d be interested to see this one. The album was funky and truly did tell a story. In addition to the title track, there were a couple other songs that caught my attention that were added to my library. I’ll round up to a four because I was grooving to this one.

I really had fun with this album! Awesome vibes, and I had to go back and listen to "Pusherman" again. I'll definitely think about this one again.

Nice surprise! Was a bit sceptical when it said it was a motion picture soundtrack, but it actually worked very will to listen to as a free standing album as well. All songs were pretty interesting and they felt different enough from each other. Perhaps there weren't that many songs that stood out as "hits" except 'Superfly' perhaps, but they were all just really nice. Really liked 'Give Me Your Love' as well.

V good for studying

Liked this a lot. Heard most of the songs but really liked the album. Definitely will be buying 8.5/10

finally something thats not mid ass 70s country or boring ambient techno. i listened to curtis but never bothered with this one for some reason. its amazing how this is a soundtrack when this seems like a perfectly intact album on its own. nothing seems out of place and even the instrumental tracks are nice and fits into the album just fine. i love chicago soul and its primarily because of curtis. he just did soul so well that no one else can compare. every song here is so good to me except superfly and because of that the 36 minute runtime came by in a flash. i dont see this as a perfect album but its a great one for sure. 4 personal favs: little child runnin wild, freddies dead, no thing on me

Iconic album with an iconic sound.

Amazing record from an amazing mind. Lyrically innovative discussing social aspects. Must remember this is a soundtrack. And it overshadows the movie it scores in every way possible. The music in Superfly lives on and the movie is forgotten.

What could be more funk than creating such beautiful and dark tracks.

ah, some good old fashioned funk. this was a good listen. quality from start to finish. highlights: “pusherman” “no thing on me (cocaine song)” “superfly”

We hebben wel vaker van dit soort Blaxploitation-ongein gehad en het blijft leuk. Ik vraag me wel af of het nou veel toevoegt ten opzicht van die andere Curtis-plaat die al is langsgekomen.

As well as being an important film reclaiming the narrative for the black community, it also turns out that this album curates the ideal mood when listened to first thing in the morning. Hypnotic. Engaging. Powerful.

Damn. That is some funky *ss soul music. 4.5/5

Familiar with Pusherman, Super Fly and a couple others - love this. smooth!

This is an easy listen. It’s a 45 minute long groove session

Terrific soul record, peak Curtis Mayfield. Generally I balk when these albums are like an hour long and cheer when they come in at half that, but I definitely could have used more of this.

Curtis Mayfield at his finest

A bit too much instrumental soundtrack material to put it with Mayfield's top tier, but a phenomenal OST.

We really enjoyed this.

Why doesn't anyone make music like this anymore?

It's kind of a weird experience listening to an album in this collection that's also a movie soundtrack, but a soundtrack theme *does* enforce a certain kind of continuity across the songs, I guess. It's also a great vehicle for some classic Curtis Mayfield songs, deep down in funk land. I hadn't heard most of the songs on this album, aside from "Superfly" itself (a great song), although I know "Freddie's Dead" a lot better than I should, thanks to Fishbone's great cover of what turns out to be an equally good original. "Pusherman" is a great track, too, and I really enjoyed the instrumental "Junkie's chase" as well as "No thing on me (cocaine song)". As good as the music is, it's also a pretty sobering album, sadly.

don't really have anything to write, I really enjoyed it. great soul record. 4/5

A fantastic album about drugs and drug dealers

ótimo som de fundo. quando para pra prestar atenção, tem algo foda acontecendo

Even as someone who is not very familiar with the Blaxploitation genre outside of parodies (shoutout "Black Dynamite" and "Undercover Brother"), I'm deeply appreciative of funk as a musical style. This soundtrack is a perfect example of that style. I was struck originally with how these songs were so reminiscent of 70s crime movies, and upon research I found that Superfly the film is perhaps THE Blaxploitation movie of note, even earning a spot in the Library of Congress by the National Film Institute because of its significance. The reason it sounds so much like other films of that era is because it was one of the pioneering movies and soundtracks of the time. Notable Tracks: Pusherman Freddie's Dead Superfly - I didn't even know I knew this one, but it's iconic (rightfully so) 7/10

Wah-wah. Þetta er helvíti fly. Þægilegt og töff stöff. Curtis var krítískur á stöðu pusher mannsins á 8. áratugnum. Textarnir sýna skilning fyrir erfiðleikum fólks í þeirri stöðu án þess að firra alveg af ábyrgð. Tónlistin er auðvitað geggjuð í sjálfu sér, en hann tekur þetta á næsta level. Kvikmyndamússík tók ákveðnum stakkaskiptum eftir að Mayfield hækkaði rána.

Enjoyably infectious funk.

Catchy and awesome. Im happy with the level of funk that this brought. Infectious beats a great listen from s great artist

I've heard the phrasing and cadence from "Pusherman" so many times in rap songs that I didn't realize it came from anything other than guys actually being pushers. I love finding stuff like this out. This is an album that sounds exactly like you would expect it to, and that's a good thing. I wonder if this or the Shaft (the original, not the Samuel L. Jackson redo thing) soundtrack is considered the real zenith of the genre. This isn't a bad thing - I like the sound and it definitely gives off a very specific vibe. The only thing I can complain about is that the songs do sound a bit all the same to me. The two instrumentals are a bit different but the full fledged songs sound a lot alike. That's probably me just not being tuned in to the genre though.

Very good funky soundtrack. Pusherman is the big highlight, being copied by rappers later on. Not much else to say than I liked it

Superb. Really good throughout, but a 5 is hard to come by

A great album and time capsule

Some good tunes on here, classic blaxploitation soundtrack

Good Album

pusherman getting mellow y'all

I like a good soundtrack and this was very good. It is certainly a museum piece. It reminds me of Marvin Gaye of the same era only more ghetto. another 3 1/2 tweener.

This and Shaft get mixed in my head, so I always expect this to be one song plus a bunch of instrumentals. This is so much better than that.

This was a strong album. It has its cheesy and overly preachy moments, but I prefer this to Marvin Gaye’s take on “What’s Going On” (the song is fantastic, but the album is…less so, in my opinion). Some of the songs go on too long, and the instrumentals are kind of meh, so I wouldn’t give it a perfect score. But it gets a 4, and I could be convinced to round to 4.5.

Easy to listen to

Takes me back to many movies and tv shows of the 70's. 4 stars or B just for nostalgia.

Pretty sure this is on my controversial artists now as the last album I had by him was a 1, but this was great, its deals with some real issues relevant at the time and still pretty relevant now without any of the slurs and vulgarity that rap does.

Some great 5-star songs surrounded by some more middle of the road 3-star songs evens out to a 4-star album.

Bringing’ the funk. Such a vibe.

fun, smooth and vibey. good times, wanna watch Superfly now.

the peak of Curtis' solo career for better or worse. pure funk and blaxpoitation music.

Classic funk from 70s but still sounds so fresh

Got my hair cut to this

I've never watched the movie, but really enjoyed the soundtrack. It was funky, soulful, and made for a great commentary on the difficult social issues it depicted. 3.5 stars

So many samples

Excellent

SUPERFLY!

The feeling is just great, the mix of both soul and funk just gives this album something that most albums don't have, and it's hard to explain what it is, because it's not exactly something that can be described with words.

Indeed a classic that you should listen to. 4 stars

Very funky concept album from the perspective of a pusher and pimp. Very enjoyable.

What an incredibly smooth and soulful voice. This album got groove.

Funky fella

Pusherman and Superfly are fantastic. Everything else bops, nothing to dislike here.

Gear: Focal Clear Artwork: 🔫🤵🗣️ Production: 🎚️🌌🧈 Music: 🕶️🔥🧊 Rating: 🪰🪰🪰🪰(🪰)/5

Part #826 of “I know I should like this even more.” Still, a very high 3.5. Great stuff. 3.5/5

An iconic soundtrack that influenced a whole genre of movie soundtracks, and gets referenced still in popular music today. Such a great funky, soulful sound.

Funkalicious 76/100

Loved th music the voice and the storytelling

Selling drugs has never sounded so cool

Lovely

This is my first 4 * album. Love it .Groundbreaking, easy listening. Funk soul brother.

The album flew by in both a good and a bad way. I would've liked more but I didn't get burned out on the sound.

A really good album. Good lyrics, fantastic and funky. 4/5!

Smooth

Guess I have to watch the movie now.

I wanted to like it, but I'm not sure I get what makes it unique and interesting.

I wasn't even particularly in the mood for funk when I heard this, but I can still recognize how great this record is. Will definitely be coming back to this.

Sophisticated funk that's super chill. You might even say it's super fly. My personal preference is the instrumental track "Junkie Chase" over the lyrical tracks, although I did add "Superfly" to my rotation. It seems to me that disco age has to give thanks to this soundtrack and Isaac Hayes (Shaft) for forming the foundation from what was to come in the middle and end of the 70s. You can also hear what will influence and be referenced by the hip hop and neo soul crowd that would come in the late 80s and all the way to the late 90s.

generally solid

Very good

Loved this!

so funky i loved 4/5

Lots of hits. Liked the flow of the whole album too. Great voice, good beats, nice funk, and overall smooth.

Favorite Tracks: Superfly Pusherman Little Child Runnin’ Wild

Pairs well with the Isaac Hayes Shaft soundtrack also from this list.

Super funky! I can't count the number of times I've heard Move on Up, but it was great to hear all these other great tracks.

Ok, never listened to the entire album before. I do love the funk, and it turns out that this is the perfect beat to dance to while swinging a cat toy for Nola to play with. How did we not hear the pathos in the message at the time? Today’s lens, post The Wire, says these characters were excelling within the very narrow parameters available.

Awesome and funky

Superfly starts superstrong but loses it's way on side 2, especially on the instrumental parts. Of course, the title track brings it all back home.

Incredibly cool start, falling a bit short toward the end and then closing with the title track. Mayfield’s vocals are like butter throughout and you barely notice that you’re actually listening to a soundtrack.

Silky smooth 70's style indicative of the blacksploitation films of the era. Washes over you like the cream over ice in your White Russian. Heartbreaking realities masked in falsetto.

Slightly better than average.

Such a funky album

Damn. A soundtrack outshining the film. Curtis Mayfield is a baller. Makes me want to take my next creative brief and just blow it out of the water. You want a fast ball? Cool, here's a comet.

favourite song: pusherman big fan of this

The emphasis is on the sweet in the bittersweet, because it swings and funks and boogies to be just about as cool as a record can be, while also sharing some hard truths that needed to be shared. The guitar work is wah-wah-wahnderful. One wishes the production did justice to the quality of the music.

Good stuff mostly

Very powerful and soulful album with important lyrics. Don't know if I would have listened to it before this project, so thankful for that. Top tracks: Freddie's Dead, Eddie Should Know Better, No Thing on Me

it's a beautiful album. the melodies, the instruments, the lyrics – it's all so cohesive and coming together beautifully. it's also the perfect length for an album like this. well done, Curtis

Love it

Dope. 4

Funnily enough, I already listened to this album in the midst of my unstoppably enthusiastic Album Generator phase. I used to go onto Google sometimes to generate a random number between 1 and 1001 and find another album to listen to that day. I only wish to get a smidgen of this enthusiasm back now, hah. Anyway, this album bangs. Super funky. The track that caught my attention most was Freddie's Dead, since I already heard its cover on that one Fishbone album. Not sure under what circumstance I'd listen to this album again, would recommend nonetheless.

This shaped up to be some really enjoyable R&B.

Immaculate vibes

Very good album.

3.5 - Wow, this was a nice listen that I can definitely see growing on me with time. I enjoyed the way that the concept of this album was portrayed, and it's nice that I don't have to watch the movie to really understand what's going on in the story of these songs. As always, I'm bad at putting my thoughts into words, haha.

Good rnb

Solid album. Favourite track: 'Superfly'. 4/5

So good. Funk Soul that defined a genre of film.

SO GOOD! This is one of those seminal albums that once you hear it, you can hear so many artists that followed clearly inspired by this sound. this is the perfect album coming off of a What’s Going On kick

Classic! So much good to listen to on this album. It's funky, soulful, and contains a couple power-singles. This is a soundtrack that made the movie worth watching! Genre: Psychedelic soul, funk, progressive soul, Cinematic soul Standouts: Freddy's Dead, Super Fly, Pusherman, The rest of the songs are exceptional as well. Rating: 4.25/5

Funky!

I really enjoyed this album! A lot more than I thought I would! It’s very interesting and I’m definitely going to listen again!

Fun album and great songs

The second-best movie soundtrack of all time (Caddyshack II)

It’s funky it’s fresh it’s the pushaman

Solid soul music. Very much a product of its time. I would probably come back to this and another listen might bring more out of it.

Had to put on my shades so I could feel Superfly like Curtis.

Gotta say, good album. I don’t listen to a lot of this funk stuff, but it’s good. Some interesting percussion. Just generally a good vibe. And a touch of social commentary

I like the instrumentation and general vibe of this album. I would say that Mayfield's vocals leave something to be desired for me at some points. The album does close on a run of a few bangers, though, and the drug bars are pretty hard. 8/10 Favorite Songs: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Freddie's Dead, Think, Superfly Least Favorite Song: Give Me Your Love (Love Song)

4.5 This is the first album I've discovered through this project that I wish was longer. The storytelling is obviously a highlight but the instrumental tracks are really just as good

Each track has a distinct personality, but at times this works negatively as there are a few times where thay become just a touch too repetitive. Overall, really enjoyed this album though, the mix and recording is incredibly clean, there's quite the array of different sounds, and all while seeming so suave and effortless. Will have to check out the film, even though I can nearly envision it off the soundtrack alone! Favorite tracks: Little Child Runnin' Wild, Freddie's Dead

Smooth. Funky. Great singing. A little too heavy on the strings for me overall but this is a soundtrack so it gets the full james bond workup and sounds great in a large space. Socially conscious lyrics.

Oh hell fuck yeah. Little Child Running Wild - this sets the tone that this is not just soundtracking but an epic crime saga. For a song I’ve never heard, this comes out the gate building to a goose-bump-laying-down crescendo. 4/5 Pusherman - so classic - this song is one of the best songs ever. Should be a 5+. 5/5 Freddie’s Dead (Theme from Superfly) - Another iconic song. It’s hard to give this 5/5 when compared to Pusherman, but it’s so so close. 4/5 Junkie Chase (instrumental) - theme song to every 70s cop show. I see the car chase, I see the foot chase. 3/5 Give Me Your Love (Love Song) - expecting more of a slow jam but I dig the jam this is. This teases 4/5 territory, but pretty solid 3/5. Eddie You Should Know Better - the little vignettes Curtis Mayfield sings more real then the actual movie this accompanied. 3/5 No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) - is this a Barry White song? Nope, Barry White doesn’t really hit until 1974. Smooth jazz saxophone. 3/5 Think (Instrumental) - nice relaxing instrumental. Nothing super special but nice placement on the album. 2/5 Superfly - A soul masterpiece. 5/5 What is this album? Cinematic that’s what it is. The sound is truly remarkable. Not a single bad song, and so many great ones. Almost a 5/5, but not quite there. 4/5

This is one groovy fucker

This is a fabulous album. The instrumentality, the vocals, the vibe. Best songs are Superfly, of course, and Little Child Runnin’ Wild.

A real joy, love Pusherman, the overall sound is sumptuous .

His voice is as smooth as silk. Very funky, and an enjoyable listen.

A funky soundtrack to a film I have never seen. Despite that, it was able to transport me to a different world

great album!

Groovy. Impressive the album grossed more than the movie

great album. I discovered blaxploitation film genre

ta bueno me ayudo a hacer mi cosa de hippies

I like it a lot, but it ain't something I'd gravitate to, though

Crisp and clean funky soul that isn't formulaic. Really liked this. The whole album doesn't have any skips (partly due to 36 min run time) but the standouts are "Pusherman" and "Superfly".

Awesome!

A soundtrack album that could easily just be a Curtis Mayfield concept album. I love Curtis Mayfield's pretty soft tenor vocals and beautiful upper Falsetto throughout the whole album. Vocally "Little Child Runnin' Wild" is one of my favorite vocal performances on the album. I love the juxtaposition of beautiful vocals and instrumentation with darker lyrics, darker stories, and darker grooves. Pusherman is at the top of my favorite songs on the album. Catchy lyrics, catchy melodies, epic falsetto. The bongos add some serious funk and wobble to this track that makes it extra special. Sweet bass and guitar riffs, and awesome wah-wah guitar scratching for an extra layer of rhythm. I think the second catchiest song after "Pusherman" is "Superfly." I'm not sure if the pitchshifting of the bongos is natural or an effect created in post, but it's an awesome psychadelic effect. Super grooving bass, epic horns, wah-wah, bongos, Mayfields falsetto = Dope. "Freddie's Dead" has some of the sickest bass/guitar riffs, honestly this song reminds me of some early King Gizzard tracks minus the strings, wonder if they took some inspiration from this song. The mix of funk and strings makes this song feel epic. The horns add an extra funk to the track. Probably the best bass tone on the album. The lyrics on this track might be my favorite on the album. "Think" is the song that most feels like it was made for a scene in the film, but it still draws from consistent tools of the album like the use of bongos. It's slow pace and focus on clean picking guitar makes this track stick out to me, but it ultimitley still fits the vibe. The vocal-less-fast-paced "Junkie Chase" is a better example of a track pretty clearly made for the film, while still really sounding like the bulk of the album. "Junkie Vibe" is one of the funkiest tracks on the album, with wah-wah guitar scratching throughout, and epic horn punches, and a nice grooving bass. Easily a 4 Star Rating just taking into account Mayfield's vocals.

You can hear the panning. The strings are pretty hard panned to the left and hi hat is hard right. The organ is also on the left side. Horns are left center.

groovy! i liked it

Funky!

Great funk albums with like 3 or 4 stone classic tracks plus the rest which is decidedly NOT filler. 4 stars

Sorprendente.. muy funky setentero. Me ha gustado mucho.

I liked the general groove and some particular rhytms; after a while it turned like all the songs were the same. Anywsy, lovely music that takes me to tarantino movies.

I liked Curtis mayfield last album and what it was trying to say but I thought this one was much more my jam. There are plenty of parallels to be drawn between this and the shaft soundtrack by Isaac Hayes but this was just an all around solid r&b soul album with plenty of good instrumental tracks to mix things up in between great tracks like little child runnin wild.

I really liked it. I haven’t seen the movie, but I think watching it would only make the album that much more enjoyable. Instrumentation is beautiful, especially the instrumentals. Mr. Mayfield’s voice is obviously as charming as ever. I wish the tracks didn’t all sound so similar and there were some to spice things up, but all in all, an excellent album and a pretty perfect soundtrack. 4/5

Tou could feel the 70's listening to this

Earthy, smooth funk with real lyrics. Truly enjoyed every second and wanted more when the album ended.

Good golly this is smooth. Very uplifting. I lost my house keys at Costco today and this album made it feel like it hardly mattered.

I knew the song “Superfly” going into this, but otherwise didn’t know much about this album. Wasn’t expecting much since it’s a soundtrack album, but wow was I wrong! This is a spectacular album top to bottom. Every song added to the bigger story, and the performance and production were top notch. One of the best soul albums I’ve heard.

Really groovy album! Super 70’s vibe. My favorite songs were “Think (Instrumental)”, and “Little Child Runnin’ Wild”.

Not Curtis Mayfield's best, but this album defined the soundtrack of the blaxploitation era in the 1970s. Curtis was a GIANT talent.

Loved the anti-drug commentary of the lyrics. Mayfield writes like a man who knows the pain of what drugs can do to a community.

This is really good!!!

Haven’t seen the movie, but did love the soundtrack.

Bra skit

Great soundtrack to a great movie

Concept album, soundtrack, revolutionary structure and lyrics, flat out, straight up and all around. 4/5

Never seen the movie but the score's good

Really good, I’ll have to return

Timelessly cool

I think I'm kind of a sucker for this style of music generally. Plus Curtis has one of my favorite voices for soul music. I think I will watch this movie one day as this stylish soundtrack is definitely getting me in the mood for some cheesy 70s

Superb

Loved it. The instrumentals, the grooves. I love how jammy everything felt, and how cohesive one song to the next feels. The lyrics are sharp and pointed.

One of the genres I've discovered the most interest in through this project is soul music. This album is another fantastic example. I love his falsetto voice and the incredibly funky guitar here. Killer album.

Great album.

Fun, love the percussion love the funk

I really liked this album. Funky, political, well performed, fun orchestrations. I’m also impressed that it was a soundtrack! Few film soundtracks feel so cohesive as an album, even when they’re recorded by one artist! This will definitely enter my rotation!

It's packed full of influential bangers, but the production sounds sketchy and it's moralising is risible. No go on, say junky again. Sounds a bit victim blamey to me. Deserves all the respect it gets though.

funky, fresh, heavy, solid

The only Blacksploitation film I’ve seen is Shaft. The songs on this album seem to be overtly commenting about the actions happening on-screen. At least I assume. But this album rips! Super funky sound. I love those horns. And it’s capped off by the sweet voice of Curtis Mayfield. I’ve found a new favorite album. 4.5/5

Funky and fly as can be. I liked the instrumental the most.

Solid groove

Enjoyed it a lot

That was a slick album. Liked it front to back. I generally really like movie soundtrack albums.

Soul Sonic wish they sounded this fucking cool. Big Curtis nails that 1970s swag in this soundtrack to a blacksploitation classic. This has all the orchestral and jazzy funk fusion one would want from a 70s album.

Needs a second listen with more attention to the lyrics (bleak lyrics about drug abuse) and not just the soulful voice and rhythms. Liked the mix of instrumentals in this album, the vocals as mentioned are soulful with abit of jazz to it.

4.1 - solid, smooth, delicious
