Brilliant, awesome, wonderfully funky, almost perfect (and yet funkadelic still just hits better for me!)

This is the album I play for white guys who say they love funk and then put the Chilli Peppers (possibly the most overrated band around) on. Someone has to intervene.

groovy as fuck also surprisingly warm and wholesome opener song, 9/10

George Clinton, baby. Such a great funk album. I feel like I have so much bias going into this one because of how big a fan of George's projects I am. It is so incredibly easy to get caught in the groove of this album, the music is infectious and contagious. There are some iconic sounds on this album, and they have lived on through samples (mostly hip-hop) and cultural references to this day. This is not a perfect album by any means, but it is so charming and inviting, and that is what has earned this album legendary status in my mind. **Rating = 4.5/5, rounded up Fave tracks: P Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up), Mothership Connection (Starchild), Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)

Now this IS what good music is. Takes you somewhere else. I wasn't even ready to cream my pants when those incredibly high funk energy swayed me across astronomical distances. Solid 10/10.

Oh man, this is five stars straight up. In my opinion the greatest funk album ever! Psychedelic, sci-fi and seriously funky.

George Clinton and Bootsy Collins at their Phunky Interstellar best. A great album, this band are just so much FUN (Ky) they clearly love music for music sake. Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley are brilliant on this album. Love "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" and "Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication" Bootsy funky Bass a highlight throughout. This album justifiably on the list.

A classic, pure and simple. It is tight, fun, and packed with exploration, groove, and FUNK.

Still waiting for We-Funk to give me back control of my radio, but I ain’t complaining. 10/10 a classic. Thank you Dr. Dre for keeping George Clinton and the P-Funkers funkin in everyone’s ear holes even after their hay day.

Todays pick presents me one of P Funks main defining records. Probably the number one from the Parliament side. I don't know if any album on earth delivers as much funk as the mothership I certainly don't know any. The music is irresistibly uplifting there is no escape and it leaves you in a good mood every time. A lot of highclass musicians work together under the genius lead of George Clinton (as in every other P Funk record). The basslines are straight out of funk space they are incredibly fun and catchy and build the perfect base for the Mothership Connection. Also great horns they really do this album good and take big part in why I like it. Two of the horn players came over from the JBs which means they played with James Brown as well as Bootsy Collins the bassplayer who also was a former musician with Mr Brown so you know they are more than just good at what they do. Too many musicians take part to give them all individual credits but they did a great job without exceptions. The whole mothership theme of the album opened a lot of doors especially for future live performances of the P Funk collective so it was influential for the collective as well as for funk, hip hop etc. on the music side. Very important and influential piece of music without a doubt and on the list for good reason. 4,5/5

Just a set of slabs of juicy, feel-good funk. Parliament doesn't complicate things on this album - the songs are based around their funk grooves and don't have a ton of embellishments. At the same time, when the horns do come in, they're a treat. Many of the lyrics are about funkiness, and the album is at its most fun in the spoken word parts where Clinton is instructing you how to best let the funk overtake you. The straightforwardness does hurt the album in places, as there are no songs that really stand out and wow you, and I could go for a couple more songs where the funk is smooth and bouncy rather than big and striking. But the album is still a joy overall, and the many artists who have sampled it over the years surely agree.

a lot more people that i dont know on here than expected (ohhh george clintons band ofc) so ready to get funked up. a lot of this song is just him talking to the listener, so there isnt a lot to talk about. but i did enjoy the song like the last one, lot of talking, lot of grooving for a song with unfunky, theres a lot of funkiness going on idk. george clinton is doing a lot more singing on this cut and god his soulful voice is just unreal the synth lines on this song are next level. the bass too, the funk is just at 110% you gonna have to put hand cuffs on me if you wanna drag me away from george clintons majestic voice yeah bro ive made it pretty clear that i want the funk by now. probably the most iconic funk song of all time why are you farting in my ear man i thought we had a thing going sorry but i really didnt have all that much to say about each song. funk music isnt really something that can be described, its more something that has to be felt. and this album made me feel pretty good, so imma give it an 8

similar to my last review, this project is making me realize i really like funk music! i love how so many moving parts can come together to make something really groovy. i always feel energized and productive listening to this kind of music.

This is very 70's Funk. It was made in 1975, so that makes perfect sense. I was familiar with and liked a few of the songs, but Give Up the Funk is the star.

Here we have their fourth album and probably the definitive funk statement of that year, following on from Sly Stone. It’s got some major ear worm hook lines, some needless noodling early on, but appearances from Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley out of James Brown’s band give Clinton and Co. an extra credibility. A really good album which no doubt Prince Rodgers Nelson took notice of…….

I really enjoyed this album.. funky in a way you rarely hear anymore.

I was initially wondering if I really needed the funk going into this record, but by the end of it, I decided I gotta have that funk. This record really is funky, psychedelic party music at its best. At first glance, this record might suggest that it is just silly party music made by a bunch of guys high on shrooms (which is partly is) but it is actually a surprisingly musically detailed and wonderfully creative experience. A super joyous record that really is just overall a groovy time.

I didn’t super love it but I’m giving it 4 because there was a kid in my 6th grade class who renamed himself Starchild and everyone called him that for years including teachers. I wonder where he is now.

Nice slow style funk, very easy to listen and groove with. Standouts are mothership connection, Give Up The Funk and Night of the Thumpasaurus People.

4.5/5. Fun drinking game: Take a shot every time the word “funk” is said on a parliament or Funkadelic album. You’ll die. Jokes aside, Mothership Connection is among the best funk albums of all time, this thing is an absolute unstoppable groove machine whether that be the sticky bass/synths of “Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication” or the spoken words over the intro track “P-Funk.” One of those albums that’s impossible to not at least nod your head to.

And in the Parliament vs. Funkadelic debate, I like this better than One Nation Under a Groove so far. Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker) is tremendous. Night Of the Thumpasorus Peoples is silly, but I like the groove.

Gorgeous P-funk album. The beats are phenomenal, and Maceo Parker's sax is out of this world. You know it's a classic when about half the album has been sampled to death by 80s and 90s West Coast rappers. My only gripe with this record (as often with George Clinton's work) is the unnecessary overabundance of speeches and narrative parts. It's amusing for a minute, but it kind of ruins the funky mood for me. Less talk, more music ! Other than that, it's just great fun. 7/10

A really good upbeat, funky soul album. I listen to this straight through without referencing any of the track names, but I didn't feel as though I needed to. One track just rolled into the next into the next and cut up that grey upbeat, funky rolling bass line with a solid drums. I wouldn't say that this album did anything extraordinary, but it did the regular things really well. Not an outstanding five-star album but definitely a good four-star.

Oh man - P-Funk is second only to the Meters for funk, saw this album and was excited. So many iconic songs and you can hear the fun the band is having. The hardest thing with this album is deciding between 4 and 5 stars. Btw - the fact that 1001 albums includes nothing by the Meters is a sign it's a garbage list. I suppose there was just soooo much worthy Britpop that there was no room for the GOAT funk band. After all, we really needed to listen to 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'.

Today is disclosure day! If we ever come in contact with the mothership, I can only hope it involves GC and Parliament! From beginning to end, this album is a blast. I can't explain it and don't want to. If you don't enjoy this album, my guess is that you will likely not make it through the list. This is Funk for Funk's Sake. Worth every juicy note.

However, I can't consciously remember hearing any of these songs before except for Give Up The Funk. For such a staple funk album and band I expected more from this album. I knew some of the more famous songs this was my first time listening to the whole thing. Overall pretty groovy with a lot of good bass lines.

WE GOTTA HAVE THE FUNK!!! George Clinton delivers once again. Last time we encountered his Parliament-Funkadelic collective in this challenge, we got Maggot Brain, one of the best ever slices of psychedelic funk rock put to wax. This time, it's Mothership Connection by their other alias Parliament - pure groovy, ass-shaking P-funk, all bouncing bass and squelching synths. Just as glorious, just as groovy, just as FUNKY.

This album is the sound of a whole crew of people having the time of their lives and I love it.

Such a smooth experience. The sounds still feels relevant and interesting, maybe because I'm not a big funk connoisseur. Anyways, it's going on my playlist.

Outstanding music.

Hmm, a 70s funk album. This is looking good. One of the first things you notice about this album is that it doesn't take itself seriously at all. It wants to party and get, well, funky. It does, with the energetic horns and groovy bass beats that define the genre. Vocals are pretty good, but the spoken word can get tedious(to say nothing of the lyrics, which are very superficial and unimportant). Many of the songs have overlong runtimes for what they are(various spoken word bits and sung bits placed over frequently repetitive music). This is a good album and an enjoyable one that knows what it is, but the numerous musical fallacies of the era that the band falls into cannot be overlooked. Or perhaps I don't know how to have fun... This album is ranked #7 of 22 albums for 1975. This album made me listen to Black Cow by Steely Dan

I listened for the first time over the course of a very gentle and lazy morning without interruption, and I listened a second time when I was more awake, dealing with work frustrations and annoyances. Before I even got to the music, this album had already made an impact on me by finally helping me understand how Parliament-Funkadelic works: what I had always just hand-waved away as being one band is more of an artistic collective usually releasing music under two different names for two different vibes. Mothership Connection is propelled by a very light-hearted sense of humor and an untouchable vibe: the instrumentals don't make any major steps or movements, primarily staying within their groove and carrying on at a gentle pace. Connecting with his album seems to rely on whether or not you can get into the groove of any specific song, as the actual music itself is always incredibly funky and well-performed. For my personal enjoyment, the biggest determining factor tended to be whether or not the vocals caught me: the songs which stood out were the ones which were more vocally interesting. The keys, horns, and synths constantly shone from song to song, and I can recognize just how unfathomably funky this entire album is even if it doesn't all jump out at me personally. Highlights: P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up), Mothership Connection (Star Child), Handcuffs, Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)

The kind of music you can throw on at a party and just vibe to, which obviously has its merits. I just don't feel the need to lock in on any of it so much.

I mean, it's a groovy record and brought a smile to my face on a pretty stressful day. Was nice to tell my problems to "funk off." 4/5

I love the 70s funk, but Parliament isn't as powerful as Stevie Wonder or Funkadelic, whom I prefer. Still, this is some inspiring r&b. 3.5/5

This album is mental, in a good way. The synth noises are like funk satire at times, some of the vocals make me feel like I'm listening to Flight of the Concords (who were obviously big fans), the horns the chants. I can't tell if it's too much or not enough.

This is almost the definition of Oldschool funk! Is it over the top, yes absolutely! But it grooves like nothing else. It's not my absolute favourite sound, all that musical kitsch and bling, but it is extremely well made and sometimes a bit of funky fun is just all you need.

Time to feel the funk! Head bobbing along with pretty much every single tune on this 7 track album. Highly entertaining.

I’m partial to a bit of funk and this landed nicely - it helps there is some familiarity in the form of Give up the Funk but also their influence on other artists, the most notable from this listen was on Warren G.

It's pretty cool, lots of rythm and soul. I just think some tracks ran a bit long for my personal taste, but otherwise it's focused and diverse

This is the funky shit! Og det må være et af Dr. Dre’s yndlings albums. Han har ihverfald samplet det meste i sin G-Funk periode. Det rykker også ret hårdt.

This album puts the FUN in FUNK. This is the kind of thing I hoped to get out of listening through the list, something I would have never spun up on my own, might not spin up again, but thoroughly enjoyed listening through it. Really enjoyed Handcuffs but everything on this album just sort of bumps along while you bob your head.

My god, what an album. It was tough listen due to how much I wanted to dance while listening to it. I have always heard about funk music, today I understood it. Masterfully produced, the instruments were second to none, the vocals were banging, over-all crazy album. Added to my offline rotation. It made me feel like bully Maguire from Spider-Man 3. FUNK IT UP! Favourite song in the album - Night of The Thumpasorus Peoples No. of favourited songs - 7/7 Rating - 4/5

I think this one has to be 4 stars (I wish I could justify 5). Best song, an old fave for me, is Give Up the Funk. After that, everything else is pretty good to good (at times very good), but, at the same time, doesn't really stand out all that much for me. Also, I'm tempted to say that the same qualities that make this special -- the creativity and imagination -- also make it a little . . . shambolic? (Look it up -- I did, to make sure it was what I wanted to say, lol.) Bonus points for historical importance -- keeping the funk/freak flag flying through the 70s, uniting the Sly Stone and James Brown strains of funk (I saw that this album features Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker from James Brown's backing band, the J.B.'s), with some Afro-Futurism thrown in, to boot(sy). Bootsy Collins is a funk bass giant. Bernie Worrell later played with the Talking Heads ("Stop Making Sense" era). I guess it feels like 5 stars should be granted stingily, so I think 4 stars feels right for this one.

It's impossible not to smile when listening to this. Parliament/Funkadelic represents probably the best of this genre. A great way to start my Friday. I do love me some Bootsy Collins bass.

Timeless Sunday morning groove which is impossible to believe is 51 years young. There are so many places you hear his influence (Prince anyone?) and there's a very good reason he got a Sinners cameo! A very respectful 4*

Very fun and extremely funky, with commentary that bounces between goofy, politically charged, and uplifting. Remarkably indulgent and rich, although the songs are a bit too long (admittedly, less an issue with the record and more with the way I listen to records). It's not willing to get silly, and really turn every single musical idea up to 11. I haven't listened to much funk beyond stuff released post-2000, and this is far more committed to the vibe than most of what I've heard. Handcuffs's lyrics feels a little creepy to me, though. And the album reaches such critical funk by the end that the bass turns into a fart and the chorus devolves into "gagagooga" (which is honestly extremely peak and I love it). 4/5!
