No need for a second
No hate to her! There's just very little here that moves me as much as it probably should. Standouts: Chain of Fools • Come Back Baby • Groovin' • Ain't No Way
Chei-Chei-Chain? Didn't really resonate with me, and although it's not annoying or anything, it is a bit boring, especially near the end of the album. Chain of Fools is at least catchy, but as a whole, I'm not particularly impressed and/or fully ignorant to the artistry involved. I feel like something called "soul" should be more impactful and easy to immediately appreciated, but I wasn't moved or made particularly emotional by these tracks.
Chalk it up to me hearing this genre everyday at work as to why it doesn’t stir anything up in me other than mild workplace annoyance.
Old.
I like this one :)
Was a little boring. Maybe if I was cleaning or running errands. Nothing really stood out.
Not my thing.
Amazing vocals, though this isn't something I'd revisit.
hmm
Alright but pretty boring
Good
This album is perfect for when you feel like being yelled at for 44 minutes. I find Aretha’s voice to have all the charm of a stranger’s dead eyed stare in the mall, and frankly after I experience it I feel aggressed. The only reprieve is the well known Natural Woman where her performance is tamped down into a bearable range and pulls off something akin to sexiness. Otherwise it’s a blast of southern soul that I could have done without. And what the fuck is “Groovin’” doing on this album?! Shouldn’t that be stinking up some one else’s beach rock album?
sorry yall
too much for the day
sorry darling ur boring xo
141/1001 First listen. This was enjoyable. It had its moments. I probably won’t play this again though. 4/10
Entiendo el encanto, no es para mi. Tremenda voz, buen mensaje
Niet mijn ding
So, so boring. You guys eat this stuff up huh Rating: 2.0
Not as bad as I feared. Lots of recognizable singles on this record. It's not something I would choose but I didn't hate it.
Great voice but nothing really catches me
Great singer, classic songs, but its time has passed.
OK. I know she's good, but its not my kind of music. But Natural Woman is a classic.
Nice, but not very memorable. Not my favourite of the soul album's I've listened to so far.
Areatha has a nice clear voice and there are maybe 3 solid melodies holding this album together but as a whole I do not feel the vibe enough to add this to my personal collection
Favourites: Money Won't Change You ★ (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman ★ Ain't No Way
ja
Tainted Love is the only song of note on this album.
Not my genre
Gostei de People Get Ready, A Natural Woman e Niki Hoeky. Aretha Franklin sempre me surpreende.
It was pretty good, but it's just not my thing.
I will in no way deny Aretha's amazing vocal talent, she set standards people are still following. however, it's so repetitive ... even with the great Memphis production and musicians, every song has to have the vocal gymnastics. can she just simply sing a song without oversinging? only one song here ("Natural Woman") does so. It's the same feeling with the Janis Joplin featured here earlier. It's a shame because the songs here are really good; I just can't stand the constant up down up down up down vocal runs. It's tiring.
pues bien pero no tanto
A bit too preachy preachy God God for me. That may sound odd coming from a Spacemen 3 fan, but she means God, they mean drugs. Still it was a nice short happy clappy album
Only listened to a few songs - not the vibe I was looking for that day but very funky.
Shit
I like the songs but it wouldn't be something I go back to, although she is a legend. It's a 2.7.
This is #day305 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here we are with another record that's a classic 2 or 3 out of 5 for me. I mean, I can appreciate the voice, and I kind of understand the legacy, but it's one of those albums I probably wouldn't have listened to if not for this challenge. Also, I don't like soul music/kind of singing. Maybe I'm soulless? It was fun to learn that Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston) and her group, the Sweet Inspirations, are credited as background vocals on several tracks, though. Looking forward to #day306.
Im just not a fan of the genre
Just ain't my thing, but A Natural Woman is of course lovely, and Good to Me as I Am to You is sexy (some stressful capitalisation choices in its title though). Backing vocals on Ain't No Way are really cool and unearthly.
Hmm... not so sure about this one... there are songs I recognize (and like better) that were done by other artists, leaving "A Natural Woman" as the only song of real value... which I can't say I love, either... At the end of the day, I prefer singing to screaming, but there are far worse albums on this list...
Aretha isn't something I'd put on but she deserves to be on the list for her monumental vocals, embodiment of soul, and civil rights activism. This album had a lot more brass and piano on it than expected. The hits are there, as well as some sleepy slower tracks, but the recording sounded very dated and it's just not really my thing so 2.0 for the Queen of Soul.
The Lady (of) Soul Aretha was a force of her day and I can hear her through so many other R&B female artists of the last decades. This album is right around her peak. All good songs even though none are ever a go to for me. I can appreciate the list spot and do think you gotta hear AF before you die...2.25.
I went in expecting 30 minutes of outdated soul music. While that's what was delivered it was probably the best version of it I could have expected. Aretha and her backup singers are pretty great throughout the length of the album. Not sure I want more of it, but Lady Soul held up pretty much all the way through the 30 minute run time which is more than I can say about many of the albums on this list. Prior to this listen my exposure to Aretha Franklin outside of the song RESPECT was minimal. I was aware she was lauded as an iconic vocalist and I can see why. 2.02 stars
She’s a talented vocalist but I don’t know if that’s what I really look for in music. This is the second Aretha album I got on this site and I liked the first one a bit more. In this one, there were a couple songs (Groovin’ and People Get Ready) that didn’t move me as much as the originals. Also I just don’t like the song (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.
There's no denying she had an unstoppable voice, and there are some iconic songs on this album. However it doesn't do much for me, I found it samey at times and lost interest. I'd probably give it a 2.5, so I'm bumping down to 2 because the album cover art is incredibly dull.
Clearly got a great voice and the album has a smooth feel to it, but not really my thing.
Not my bag
Nothing great stuck out.
Soul is not my preferred genre so found this a rather dull listen. 2 stars
Soul ist nicht so meins... :D
Stellar voice with some tracks that I enjoy but overall I didn’t connect with it much.
It was okay, not really my style but I knew one of her songs.
Feel free to tell me how I know nothing about music, but I thought this album was incredibly boring. The backing tracks feel uninspiring, and the songwriting is nothing special. Only good thing about this album are her very good vocals.
Aretha Franklin has a wonderful voice. The album has held up fairly well, but it's not really something I groove all that much with. Soul isn't much of my boat, although I do love some of the jazz and funk elements that exist throughout the music. Maybe if I enjoyed the genre more, or was in a different mood. Some of the songs are fairly chill however and overall I can vibe with it as decent background music. ~2.5
Chain of Fools and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman are the two songs that made it from this album. You Make Me Feel has been ruined by commercials. The rest of the album was mostly background noise for me. Nothing really stood out. Aretha's definitely got a voice, but this isn't for me.
Bluesy and old timey. Not bad, but definitely not a first pick for me.
Boring
Eh
Nothing super great about the album. Sure she’s got the vocals but it’s just about average to me at this point.
Great voice but not my style of music
No.
I always feel like listening these albums in mono, because the localised trumpeting in my left ear annoys me to no end. It's genuine headache stuff - next to that, Aretha Franklin has great vocals and the lyrics are catchy. Losing a lot of point for the stereo in this one. 4/10
classic tunes, certainly an album that belongs on the list. not my style, but can appreciate it
Juuh
Nicht mein Geschmack

æi ... nenni ekki alveg
Not my era or genre of music and this album has done nothing to change that. This album did nothing for me. It's probably not half bad if you are into it. On a positive note its quite a short album
Not sure what everyone else is hearing here. It's fairly rudimentary and short. I found myself relieved when the 30 minute run time was over. I wouldn't count the singles Chain of Fools or Natural Woman as songs I ever get excited to hear either. A bit of a dud album really.
boring
The band sounds great, and the main talent is truly displayed. However, Lady Soul seems to have set the precedent for over-emotive zero-to-hundred vocal performance that characterize a lot of more contemporary pop-star singers. It appeals to the "people", but I guess I'm not a person. Gentle reader of reviews, please forgive my flak towards the so-called Queen of Soul—I'm just not into it, and would sure prefer the more restrained substance of a Roberta Flack.
2+ Stars (6/15)
Ekki fyrir mig
I’m cool on it.
Not my jam
Kinda all sounds the same, even the lyrics are repetitive. There is even a copy of the chains of fools song later in the album, like what the hell
Pretty lame. Almost liked groovin' but it's also not greatly interesting. -S It was ok, but nothing catched my attention -a
Not my thing but was okay.

Eh, I can appreciate it but nothing really stood out to me, nothing I would return to. I’m not gonna write out Aretha Franklin entirely but she better come with the heat the next time I listen.
It was alright
Aretha's a fantastic singer, but I'm not a big fan of her music.
Malright
Not a bad bop. Wailed along to natural woman whilst making a brew.
The 12th album from Aretha Franklin was released in 1968, and was her third album to top the R&B charts. The R&B and soul music album contained some of her more popular hits - helping it sell over a million copies. Aretha is a fantastic singer and some of her songs are fun to listen to - it's just such a shame I don't like R&B...
not rly into this type of music atm
Meh
Soul ist nicht ganz so meins. Aber kann man hören. Gute Stimme. Aber fast jeder Song Fadet aus
Great voice, well produced but I just found myself bored and willing it to be over.
More soul up next! Coincidentally, Womack makes an appearance on guitar here, as well as Eric Clapton. Although Aretha Franklin obviously had an amazingly powerful voice, I find this kind of big gospel voice slightly bellowy, and not that expressive or enjoyable to my ears. The recording job doesn't sound like anything special here - most of it is brash and lacking clarity (on the 1988 CD master at least, but I think it's the source recording itself), and the songs don't really strike me, other than the amazing \"(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman\" and the evocative \"Good to Me As I Am to You\". Some of the stronger tracks are mildly reminiscent of some classic Motown tracks - but not enough that I would bother coming back to this. 2.5
She can definitely sing, but the songs aren't that interesting. But I expected as much from soul music.
Good
Yeah! She has a great voice! Solid music, too! Very consistent, every song sounds like the next. If you like one, you like the whole album. I imagine.
Blues and slow ballad album - blues is probably my least favourite music genre. Pros - Great singer, live instrument recording, good piano licks, some good backing harmonies. Cons - Harmonically and rhythmically simple and predictable, melody moves very similarly in each song, some poor mixing. Only songs I somewhat enjoyed were: You make me feel like a natural woman (nice melody) Good to me as I am to you (some interesting harmony) Groovin' (great drum beat) Ain't no way (some nice chord movements) 2/10 - Probably won't be many albums I enjoy this little
this sound like jazz and is not my type of music.
I love you Aretha
no
Not for me
crazy how many songs i know despite it being soul. doesn't matter, though. i don't like soul.
Meh. She’s great at what she does. I’m just not into it.
Nicht mein Genre!
Not for me. 1/5
The iconic songs are indisputable. The rest are best left for a soul fan. I’ll wait to hear the best on compilations and scores. I don’t need to listen to a full album.
Would I listen again: no Best track: Good to me as I am to you. Worst track: people get ready Surprise awesome track: sweet sweet baby since you’ve been gone. Weirdest track: groovin Lyrics: good typical sixties blues r&b lyrics. No skips?: I could skip the whole album respectfully. Cover art cool?: na it’s just a pic of her. Notes: At the outset let me say I have no issue with Aretha Franklin in general and I totally like her voice and every song of hers I’ve ever heard. That being said, I have never sought out an Aretha Franklin song to listen to because I was a fan of that song, I have never heard one that made me say hmm that’s interesting, and I have never listened to one of her albums all the way through. I am hopeful that this album is interesting enough to me to make this listen through pleasurable annd interesting and not repetitive and boring. Am anticipating a fast moving album short songs with funk and groove. But nothing to deep or anything bought provoking. Chain of fools heard the song. A million times but never listens. Drummer is great. The rhythm he hitting on that ride cymbal is great and groovy. Barrie one if Bass vi or whatever it is is great too. Not feeling this version of people get ready. Like this is all great. She great the music is great but nothing here will bring me back to listen to this again. It’s great and I like listening to it but I don’t care about it. I wouldn’t seek this out. I’m not sure why. Nothing I’m listening to will make me a repea customer. It’s good my meal was good everything about it checks out but I’m never coming back to this restaurant because it just doesn’t have anything that particularly stands out to me. I say this while completely recognizing and acknowledging the social and cultural importance of this woman and her music.
