Reviews (page 5 of 14)
10 stars, maybe one of the best albums on here possibly
Eventually the artist formerly know as Prince is a bloody genius and Purple Rain is just another example of that.
Þvílíka algjöra snilldin sem þessi plata er. Besta plata ársins 1984 og þótt mörg önnur ár væru höfð með. Rainy Purpl alla leið!
I mean is it even legal to give Prince anything less than a 4? This is a masterpiece! Prince was just a wizard in all respects! Legendary!
Must have watched 20 times when I was 15. Could be a nostalgia 5?
"The Beautiful Ones" is the closest thing to a it's-just-ok track on this. I don't think I need to say any more.
Ear candy !🍭
I'm not a huge Prince fan but this album is perfect - every song is distinct and different, masterfully written and recorded, and it's all over before you know it. This was the best of everything Prince had to offer.
Unfortunately a 5
one of my favs
Classic... Prince's best effort, movie sucked though.....
Prince at its best, great sound, great music.
It’s Prince
Groovy and heartfull. Instant beloved. Some of the non-hits were a little boring though.
8/9/24. Prince. One of the greatest artists ever (easily top five for me). This album will live on forever, each track is perfect/
Not a single miss on this record. No notes. Perfection
This was the seminal album in college.
Great album. 10/10. Cool songs. I loved listening to this Prince album.
Violet precipitation. Cinco. That means you too.
Still an amazing album 40 years later
Purple prose, purple clothes, purple everything. Somehow, it works.
Banger after banger. What else to say? It's Purple Rain.
One of my all time favorite's
The back half of this album goes unbelievably hard. Hard to believe you could top the first half of the album — but it does!
This album is an icon of the era. It, along with the movie, came out when I was a teenager and they definitely made their mark on impressionable me. So many songs that were part of the soundtrack of my youth, and that hold up today for me.
Genius!
I didn't get the hype back in '84 but I sure as heck do now. A classic!
An incredible soundtrack to a movie I’ve never seen. Terrific!
Sure, I’ve heard the hits, but I’ve never really sat down to dig into any of Prince’s music. And I knew it was long overdue. I figured I’d love it and I did. Not a bad track on here. 5/5 Highlights: Let’s Go Crazy Darling Nikki Purple Rain
Classic
This I did not expect, the album explores and merges so many different ideas and genres successfully, delivering you what by all means is a masterpiece of music.
Classic 80's!
Favourite tracks: let's go crazy; I would die for u; purple rain; darling Nikki; when doves cry
One of my all-time favorite artists and albums! Not a bad song on here, which is rare! A true legend and mast of his craft.Prince made music effortlessly, it was a natural part of him and it came through in all aspects of his work!
All hail his purpleness!!! This is one of those albums that you will never forget the time that it came out when you were a kid. There was no other artist that molded performance, video, sex appeal and talent like Prince. MJ may he been the king of Pop, but Prince could rock out on a guitar and that added a whole new dynamic to his performances. Songwriting second to none.
This is a great album. Song placement on the album makes the singles shine, and some of the arrangements that were not in the radio singles enhance the songs. Just freaking amazing
I've heard many good things about this beautiful black man, and I gotta say, this was a great listen. It's so full of promiscuity, passion, and straight fire. I listened to it several times, and my opinion on this has been sealed. Absolute GAS, I encourage anyone and everyone to listen to this banger. Best - Let's Go Crazy, Computer Blue (underrated asf, when that guitar hits at the second half that shit was so fire), When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U (MPF), Baby, I'm a Star, and Purple Rain Worse - No bad songs honestly 4.50-4.75/5
How do I say this? How do I review this album while making sure to properly give every important opinion I can on this album. I mean... it's Purple Rain. What can I say that hasn't been said already? This thing is an absolute masterpiece. This is absolute 80s perfection right here. There's no denying the fact that Prince was, is, and will always be a legend, and this album is proof of that. Everything about this album just works perfectly. Prince's singing is incredibly varied. Some songs have him hitting intense falsetto and emotional screams like "The Beautiful Ones." Some songs have him going a bit lower like "When Doves Cry." Either way, it's amazing. The writing is great as well. The only song that I'm not 100% sold on with writing is "Darling Nikki." It's still a good song though. When that's the weakest song on the album, that's how you know you've got an amazing album on your hands. And the sound. It's beautiful. The energy of songs like the opener "Let's Go Crazy" balanced with more somber songs like the closer "Purple Rain" works amazingly. The title track is just phenomenal. It's one of the best closers for an album I've ever heard. There isn't much else I can say. This is one of those albums that's absolutely iconic for all of the right reasons and then some. I get it. 5/5.
Spellbinding magic Rock n roll gets makeover And it’s majestic
I love when albums come up on this list and I can actually go over to the record collection and listen to the vinyl. This is one of my favorite albums and I've listened to it countless times. There's so much to love about this album - as with all Prince, the musicianship is outstanding. Prince was one of the best guitar players of all time and the thing that really impresses me about how he orchestrates his music is that he rarely takes a self-indulgent guitar solo. Everything he does serves the song and not all the songs need the most amazing guitar solo ever written. Unless you knew how great he was, the average listener wouldn't hear this album and think "wow that guy can really play". This album has what I consider to be one of the most perfect album sides in music. Side 2 of this album is utterly brilliant - the songs are amazing, they flow from one to the next perfectly, starts off with an absolute banger, stays strong, ending on another banger that is definitely in contention for the best song ever written. I see a lot of people on here saying that this album is good but Sign O' The Times is better, and while that album is another brilliant piece of music, Purple Rain is the better album to my ears. 5/5
His Funky Highness crushed This. Purple crush.
weird little fella is a genius
Class
damn classic 4.5
Heel nice
Goat init
This 5 has been purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka
Personlly on the first listen it would be a 4. But when you think albums you MUST hear this is one of them. The album cover, the style, the music, the impact. The songs are very well crafted and played(prince being both a great stage precence and guitarist) which makes me appriciate the album more, even though some songs are more impactfull and memorable than others. For me personally purple rain is one of those masterpiece songs there are only a couple of (i am also a sucker for dramatic outro solo sections)
Great Album.
Good ol’ Prince. Not a song on here that isn’t a banger. Love it.
this is history, obsessed
10/10 Hsitorico, Legendario, Complejo, Exitoso, El unico que le podía competir al rey. 10/10 Mejor que el sexo.
10/10 mejor que el sexo

Prince at one of his eclectic pop peaks. From power balladry to be post new wave pop rock psych and funk. He does it all.
Superb. This is one of those albums you always hear about one of the greatest records of all times. I can definitely see why. I think if I had heard this album younger it wouldn't have hit me the same way it does now so I am glad to just be getting around to it now.
Always love.
Beautiful
Still not my all time favorite Prince record, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
Easy 5 for me. It's one of my favorites and an iconic party.
5.0
Absolutely incredible Perfect 5
Damn good...
One of his best albums.
I had been waiting for this one and then there it was. It doesn’t get any better than this does it? Despite the fact that I’ve listened to this so many times, it stil gets better every time. Every time Therese something I didn’t hear the last time. Surprising me every time
Perfect album by one of the greatest artists in the history of pop and rock music.
☔☔☔☔☔
This record is the one that prompted me to ask (as a little game), "What's your least favorite song on your favorite records?" The answer in this case is "When Doves Cry". It's still inarguably a great song, but I guess I heard it a few million too many times in 1984 and 1985 and 1986 and every day after that. Anyway, even the filthiest songs have lovely melodies. [Almost unrelated anecdote: The first time I ever listened to music on a Walk-Man (borrowed for a few minutes), I was standing on a ladder scraping old paint off a garage door. Suddenly, I was able to focus on this boring job in a way I had never been able to focus before. The tape in the machine: Purple Rain.]
Honestly, same comment as my previous album (which I did not get to leave a review for due to messing up on the site) - genuine masterpiece, and it's earned its reputation for a reason.
Top 100
I forgot just how great they were at the time and how much fun this album is. I never owned the album and I knew the popular songs, but I didn’t know how good the rest of the album was. Should have paid closer attention at the time. I will listen to this again.
Such good.
Dearly Beloved, RIP Prince.
really amazing
9/10. The best parts of the album simply outweigh the bad. Great voice. Great instrumental throughout. A couple of songs missed me, but most of the album was added to the 5 star playlist.
Banger after banger, but that's to be expected for almost any Prince album. Guy was a natural musician and performer (as well as the ultimate horndog!). Now I've never actually seen the film this soundtrack was created for, but you can immediately tell that this album has a "big screen" aura to it as it starts with the iconic, upbeat "Let's Go Crazy", and cools down nicely with the power ballad and self-titled track "Purple Rain". Makes up for a fun, instrumentally-layered pop-fueled 44 minutes. A perfect Friday album as we enter a long holiday weekend. "1001 Albums" seems to know exactly when to give you the appropriate album. Now excuse me as I watch Prince's Super Bowl halftime show performance again...
Stone cold classic and easy 5*. The highlights are obvious and some of the best songs ever, in particular the title track and When Doves Cry. There isn't a bad track on here though, even the slightly less heralded ones like Computer Blue have something to offer (in that case it's one of many examples of how great a guitar player Prince is) Another thing I really like about Purple Rain is the pacing - it mixes up the funkier and upbeat tracks well with some nice slower ones, including the outro. It never outstays its welcome either, unlike some Prince albums which go on a bit.
What can be considered Prince's best and most popular album, "Purple Rain" absolutely kills it. A fusion of funk, pop, and rock, this album features Prince on almost every vocal track, instrument, and stage of production. This album is packed with energy and legendary hits such as "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," I Would Die 4 U," and, of course, the title track, "Purple Rain." This album is actually one of the best and most influential albums in history.
Fantastic album!!! A must listen for everyone.
One of the best pop albums ever made with some of the best production of the 1980s. Prince is a immaculate songwriter with a insane gift of melody of production.
Have been listening to this since it came out, not a bad track on here.u
Big contender for Favorite Album of all Time.
One of the best albums ever made
2nd prince album in a few days and I had a blast. Now that I've embraced him being a silly fun guy instead mysterious cool musician I absolutely get this stuff now this was great I grooved hard asf
Amazing collection of songs. The production doesn't hold up particularly well. Hard to believe people actually liked the sound of all of that solid state equipment.
Undeniably groundbreaking and influential. Also, a fantastic listen.
A classic. Dramatic, with sparse but soulful arrangements. Prince was a genius.
Amazing record, incredible artist. Every time I listen to Prince, I tell myself I need to listen to more Prince. His live shows, really well documented on various bootlegs, are particularly fantastic. Well worth hunting down. I knew this was a five before I played it today, and listened to it twice, just because!
La peli... mejor no. Otros discos de un excelente 1984: Debuts de Run-DMC, The Smiths, Dead Can Dance, Nick Cave, LLoyd Cole and the Commotions, The Style Council y clásicos instantáneos como Ocean Rain, Born in USA, 1984, Recknoning, Learning to Crawl, Ride the Lightning, Like a Virgin, Let it be, Zen Arcade, Knife, Diamond Life... o Deseo Carnal y Make it Big.
Now this is the one Prince album that I really can appreciate fully. Consise, consistent and several truly incredible songs. When Doves Cry in particular is top tier. I still think the production is way too light on the bass and dates the album, but I can see past that in this case. 9/10
Prince presents a conundrum for me. His music is amazing, this album is incredible, no matter how many times I've listened to it throughout my life it always has something new to offer. This time around I was focused on the imagery of the lyrics. "Dream if you can a courtyard / an ocean of violets in bloom / animals strike curious poses / they feel the heat, the heat between me and you." Amazing stuff. However I think his personal gravity and magnetism are unfortunately the tie breaker that makes Minnesota (otherwise not that cool of a state) cooler than Wisconsin (also not that cool of a state but otherwise marginally cooler than Minnesota). Ah well.
💜💜💜
the one truly great album on this last so far
Maybe the greatest work of pop ever.
purpleee rainnn PURPLE RAINNNN
It’s fucking Prince. PRINCE. I don’t even need to say anything else. This record changed the world.
THIS is how you do a concept album! Suck it, Pink Floyd! I defy anyone to find a single note out of place or played where it's not needed on this. It's the 80's encapsulated. It's perfection. It's also the best $5 I ever spent for a perfectly playable LP with the poster!
Prince does what he wants
6/5. Can't think of a better singer/guitarist combo.
Undeniably great funk/soul/pop/rock album. A milestone, but better than that, it's just great music that has something for everyone.
This album is an unavoidable from the 80's, everything is there, crazy guitare solo, ballads, synthtizer ect. First of all this album is a soundtrack and i have never seen the movie, so maybe its even better with it. For me this album is only two songs: When Doves Cry and Lets go Crazy, so for me its a discover. Here are all the songs i really like: The introduction of the album is Lets Go crazy with its message at the beggening and its iconic riff that just made you wanna jump, with on of the best outro of all times, the guitare solo by Prince is incredible, clearly one of the best song on the album. Take me With U, is purely beautifull, in duet with the females vocalist (Appolina and Jill Jones) it almost feel like a christmas song and i enjoy it very much. The album take is depth and magic from all the music genra he drew inspirations, Soul and new age on Beautiful ones, psychedelic on Take me with U, Gospel on Purple rain, Soul on When doves cry, Hard Rock on Darling Nikki and that is the case for all the songs. The is no main genra, and i think that's the force of the album, but we could cited RnB, funk, pop-rock, all of that with the massive use (brilliantly in this case) of synthsizer. Prince show all is versatility and richness, Prince play a lot of instruments on the album, not just vocals and guitare but also drums, almost all the synth, piano, bass ect. And he have written all the songs Darling Nikki as such a powerfull raw and sexy energy, its about sex, seduction and Masturbation, with a backward lyrics at the end, very strange song but gosh i like it very much. When Doves Cry is why i know Prince at the beggening, the first i discover from him, and by far the best on the album, the main element here, is the chorus with the piano note that represent dove cryin is simply magnetic. The lyrics about his relationship with his parent are so well sing, screaming and written literaly everything about this song is perfect. The outro is a good as the one from the first song and that hard to beat. I would Die For You have the most classicasl 80's syntheziser sound i think, i enjoy it too. Purple Rain the slowest song on the album, such a beautifull song, everything especially the music and the way the song is sing just make you melt. I do think the song is too long, like the 5 minutes instrumental is cool but a bit long, but again maybe i fit well in the movie so i dont know. Even tho you haven't seen the movie this album just capture a magic musical moment, Prince was on the top of the world after that and it is well deserve. Every song on the album are enjoyable, some more than other (Take Me With U, Lets Go Crazy, When Doves Cry) but in general that how the album feel a very magnetic sexy, fun and magic energy.
I'm starting this review by saying that, despite what I'm about to write, I'm giving this 5 stars. It's an iconic album, full stop. After listening to this and Sign o' the Times (which are frequently considered Prince's two best albums), I think my issue with Prince is that he has some real duds on his albums. The highs are incredibly high, but there's always at least a few songs that have me scratching my head. Maybe Prince is more of a singles artist than an album artist for me, and that's probably ok. If these are his two best albums (of the like 50 he released) this is probably the case. Anyway, I'm willing to overlook some duds and give this a 5 anyway on the strength of the highs. "Let's Go Crazy" is an iconic opener so hot start here. "Take Me With U" is decent, but a little uninteresting. "The Beautiful Ones" and "Computer Blue" are both a miss for me, and then you get "Darling Nikki" which was so vulgar that Al Gore's wife went and made a whole album rating system so her kids wouldn't hear Prince sing about having sex with a "sex fiend" named Nikki. Honestly I don't really like the song that much, but adding it to the playlist for its historic value. Things are a bit mediocre to this point honestly, but it turns around sharply. "When Doves Cry" is iconic, "I Would Die 4 U" is great, we can ignore "Baby I'm a Star", and then it ends with "Purple Rain" which needs no description. I learned that "Purple Rain" was originally supposed to be a country song collaboration with Stevie Nicks, and then she turned it down when Prince sent her a 10-minute instrumental and asked her to write the lyrics. Anyway, this is probably the least songs I've saved for a 5-star album, and I'm probably at least partially doing it because I feel like I have to, but there are some bangers on here. I did like this better than Sign o' the Times (which felt way too long and disjointed, this was much tighter as a unified piece of work). I'm clearly not the biggest Prince fan in the world, but I'll recognize a major achievement when I see (hear) it. Favorite song: Let's Go Crazy Other: Take Me With U, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain 4/25/24
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Let’s go crazy, The beautiful ones, When doves cry, I would die 4 u, Baby I’m a star, Purple rain
Brilliant album. The Beautiful Ones is my favourite track.
Love this for being my first album.
Easiest 5 of my experience so far... Let's Go Crazy is one of the best opening songs ever put to tape. Purple Rain is one of the best closing songs ever put to tape. Everything inbetween is joyous, plus Prince himself was a trailblazer, visionary and had the garb to boot. If I were his manager I'd promote him to King.
If you know me my bias here is strong, but IMO very few things top Prince.
Good. Guitar solos were amazing. Will relisten for better review
Track by Track: Let's Go Crazy - A classic, fast paced and punchy Prince song Take Me with U - A little slower but very classic, conforming to that Prince Sound. The Beautiful Ones - too slow, almost like a demo and doing way too many vocal stunts to make you take it seriously. Computer Blue - Funky, a nice song Darling Nikki - Nice story being told in the song but may need a re-listen for me to fully get into it. The end sounds like when people would play songs backwards to make them sound satanic and connect them to the Illuminati. When Doves Cry - A true classic from Prince's Discography Baby I'm a Star - Very classic for Prince, fast paced but allows enough audio separation between his vocals and the instruments Purple Rain - A true class, can't fault it
Prince 🤴🏻 Well known album for me, but I appreciated like never "When doves cry" it made me emotional. Purple rain as always is outstanding To re-listen again 4.5/5
Prince’s Purple Rain doesn’t really need an introduction, or an explanation. Despite this being my first time listening to the album in full, most of the tracks were familiar with me. I love how everything sounds so present, the instrumentals don’t feel background, they are level with the vocals. Prince himself sings quite well, even screeching on occasion (Was indifferent to this). My favorites are Compute Blue, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain. Of course, I have to point out the spectacular guitar riffs throughout the album, especially on Purple Rain. This album was an excellent display of the Prince package deal, and formulated to appeal to a mass audience which would love to get a glimpse in the chaos that makes up Prince. All in all, Purple Rain is a perfect album. Best Song: When Doves Cry Worst Song: The Beautiful Ones
What can you possibly say that hasn't been said before?
pretty much a perfect album from start to finish. When Doves Cry is my favorite Prince song. also, Darling Nikki was responsible for the creation of the parental advisory sticker.
Excited to see this one come up. I don’t have to listen because I’ve been listening to it for 40 years. One of the single most influential albums in my life with Prince at the peak of his creative and live performance powers. Name me a better all around musician. You can’t.
Best of the best.
Perfection from beginning to end.
Purple perfection. Rock style
Since I was 13, this has been my go-to answer whenever people asked me my favorite album. It's not my most played today (that's Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides), and it's not the one that had the biggest impact on my brain chemistry (that's The Shape of Punk to Come), but when I think of albums I both love listening to all the way through and can make no critiques about, I think of Purple Rain. Music is 1000% subjective, but Prince makes very convincing arguments that sometimes, music can be objectively good, and Purple Rain might be the closest to an "Objectively 10/10 Album" in the entire history of recorded music. From the guitar solo on "Let's Go Crazy" to the drums on "Darling Nikki," from the chart-success of "When Doves Cry" to the second half of "Computer Blue," to the flawless climax of the title track – there is not a wrong note, not a single wrong melody, absolutely nothing you can lobby against this album. It's poppy, it's danceable, it's intellectual, it's sexual, it's romantic, it's easy to listen to for fun, and easy to listen to if you want to cry. Every track could be someone's favorite song ever. It's the sort of album that requires a full listen every time. It's a masterpiece, a high water mark for Prince, for rock, for funk, for pop, and for music in general. Easiest 5-star review ever. I have a bad feeling this is going to be the listening high-point of this challenge, but then again, that would've been true if I had gotten to it on Day 1088, too. "I'm not a woman/I'm not a man/I am something that you'll never understand" 🖤💜🤍💛
I knew the singles but had never listened to the album before. My biggest thought after the first listen through is how does something so complex give the vibe of being simplistic. After a few listens I have to say this is a great album and I really enjoyed it.
It’s freaking prince. Every songs is amazing!
Great
One to revisit again
Such a strange little man and such a shit film but what a fucking (which is an adjective I assume the Purple One would approve me using) fantastic album
So good.
what's to say. absolute smash
Game blouses.
Phenomenal! Utterly phenomenal!
So many sounds. So good.
How can you dislike this???
One of my favourite albums of all time
Prince was always a greatest hits type artist of me. This is my second time listening to this record (after listening on another long list). The second listen really shows that there is a lot here. More listens needed to fully appreciate this but I can now see the awesomeness that’s here.
An easy and obvious 5 star album. The Beautiful Ones is one of my top favorite songs of all time. Purple Rain, Darling Nikki, Computer Blue, When Doves Cry?? This album is stacked
Didn’t need to listen. One of the best!
One of the top albums of all time. With much packed into this release, there is no weak song, nothing wasted.
Just fantastic perfection all around, truly one of the world's greatest albums by one of the world's greatest musicians. No skips, no filler all classics.
Top 10 all time
The movie is trash. But the album is perfection.
i almost took a star away for the movie could i write poetry to this? y
No commentary needed here. This is objectively one of the very best albums of all time. Absolutely perfect. Ten and one-half purple stars.
The Beautiful Ones and Computer Blue are weak spots, but everything else is perfection.
There’s a reason why this is the ultimate Prince album, it’s fantastic. A couple of minorly less strong tracks, but the big famous ones more than make up for it.
One of his better albums
Legendary Album and Musician, ‘Nuff Said.
Masterpiece.
There will come a day when I don't cry listening to the guitar solo on Purple Rain. Today was not that day.
Great album.
It's absolutely fantastic. This album cemented Prince (and the Revolution)'s fame. It has everything, and is everything anyone could ever want out of an 80s album. Highlights: all. Listen to all of it.
I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a lot more Prince on this list. I absolutely love his music, and he remains the celebrity death that his me hardest. I’ve listening to this album several times before, and I’m going to enjoy listening to it again today. Songs I already knew: all to some degree Favourites: Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy Let’s just be real. Prince was musically on another level. It feels like calling this pop, rock or pop-rock is too much of a simplification because it’s so much more. Prince had a silky voice like nobody else, with extremely catchy music and understated instrumentation. I genuinely believe that this is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, with a good selection of Prince’s best music found here.
Prince was ahead of his time and is a true icon and legend
There are albums that transform from simple music releases to district musical events throughout history. The culmination of everything "Purple Rain" is within its own time capsule. Prince had always been a person bigger than the stratosphere he typically surrounded himself around, but somehow he was able to take all of it and properly execute as much of it through the music. This album is virtually perfect. It continues to remain timeless in its sound, impact, and further musical prowess. Nothing about this album (or the movie) slacks and even though it may feel like a product from the 80s it still feels a breath of fresh musical air. This is up there as one of the most important musical releases in music history and if nothing else will convince you, play the album and tell me you were able firmly stay still and feel absolutely nothing... Its not possible. Rest in purple Prince and thank you for gifting us this package to hold onto for the many generations. I thoroughly look forward to being able dissect as many of your works that are on this list and fully appreciate that THIS is the first album of yours to begin appraisal for your artistry. P.S. There are a multitude of shameful disgraces throughout music history and the fact that this didn't win the grammy for album of the year AND the title song only peaked at #2 at the billboard must be brought up in this conversation.
Cleanse yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Incredibly fun album, catchy as all hell and full of cool guitar parts. At least four of these tracks are definite all-timers (Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain), but the other tracks are still good listening in between those peaks.
After a rough few days of albums it's always good to get an absolute classic like this. Every song here is brilliant
A damn fine album, I can't in good conscience give it less than 5 stars.
Classic Prince. Challenge anybody to stay still while listening to this one. Soulful, catchy, brilliant. First one on the list I wanted to listen to twice back to back.
Holy wow, that was a good album! I've never heard it before, but do know and like When Doves Cry & Purple Rain. However, this was so good I had to listen to it twice in a row. Really well put together, everything flows, and the whole album is a great listen :)
Album 339 of 1001 Prince - Purple Rain Rating : 5 / 5 Least Favorite Track : Computer Blue Another old favorite. I was determined to listen through with a clear mind and be a fair judge, although I know I already love the album. After listening, I feel the same. Awesome album all the way through. A couple of less favorite songs, but still can't complain about those. Some great memories come with this one but it is the music than earns the rating.
What a great, densely layered album! There's a huge amount of joy throughout this album. It's a great work by an amazing artist of the times. Very eclectic with loads of influences on display. Standout tracks: Let's Go Crazy, The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star, Purple Rain. 9 out of 10
I mean, come on.
I don't really have the words for this, so, what Jacob said 😂
Ah, Purple Rain. What would we be without you. A truly weird, one-of-a-kind record made by a space alien named Prince. It's hard to write anything about Purple Rain on a random Tuesday, so I saved this review for a rainy day. Actually a snowy day here in Vermont– in April! First of all, this is a historically significant record, like... I'd put this in the Library of Congress, and I don't think a lot of records really qualify for that. Captures this fun-loving, decadent, but also genuinely *weird* freaky feeling you get when you interact with anything 80's. Prince is right at the top of that heap... so weird as to be almost inaccessible, but so infectious in that toe-tapping Elvis kind of way that you can't not dance to it. To say this record is "dated" record is like, totally fair, but also not even the right words to describe what is going on here. It's all Prince. It's got the mind of a very special person all over it. I always think of that quote from one of Prince's producers in that Kevin Smith story: "Prince has been living in Prince Land for quite some time now." Somehow totally fits how it feels to hear this. It's so of the time, perfectly sums up the 80's, and yet could only be made by one very weird person. I feel *weird* listening to this record. I can't place why. It's like the hyper-earnestness, the hyper-sexualization, the crazy vocal screams that make you feel uncomfortable unless you're particularly Prince-sexual. Maybe it's just the Linn Drum. That's it. The Linn Drum certainly isn't helping. You get the sense that Prince has been in this isolated bubble, and he's got so much energy and he just needs to get it out. You can't *not* react to this. It's like one person's really weird, really strange vision of his own sexual power, experiences with romance, weird fantasies and fetishes, technology's intrusion on it all. There's really nothing like it. And THEN purple rain. Another one that just sums up that velvet-soft, saccharine, totally cheesy side of the 80's too– that Prince sells like nobody else can. I always think about that meeting between Prince and Joni, how Prince was a super shy fan when it came down to it. I hear more than a little bit of Joni in this song, in a funny way. But through the lens of this unlikely rockstar. The WEIRDEST pop record ever, and also the most overly earnest and cheesy rock record ever. I don't love all of it, I don't even like how I feel after listen to it, but I have to give it 5 stars. 5/5
This belongs in the top 100 albums of all time. Straight fire.
Wow, this was quite a flashback. I came of age during this albums release, and it was huge. Every track plays solid to this day. The deeper tracks are in some cases heavier and have more pronounced guitar work. Landmark album and so influential. 5 stars.
pop heaven throughout, never was dissatisfied, I recognized the track opener and closer, crazy how it took me this long to get around listening to it
Solid album
Если вам не нравится этот альбом в Рписе, мне кажется что вы должны слушать другие альбомы.
Prince expertly combines the catchy hooks of pop, the exhilarating energy of rock, and the groovy rhythms of funk into a sound that can only be his. Every song on this album is an absolute banger, worth listening to over and over again. Truly one of the greatest artists of his era, died well before his time.
Magic
Yes ma’am
prince was a god of music you cannot convince me otherwise
Not every song hits the exact same, but the ones that do really hit hard. When Doves Cry is by far my favorite track from Prince and the bookends of the album with Lets Go Crazy and Purple Rain as well as I Would Die 4 U in there make this a masterpiece album. The energy and unique sound is there, and the belting always slaps. Album name is iconic and fantastic, and ending the album on the title track is a killer move. Purple Rain and the color purple in general epitomizes Prince for a reason. The art is a bit more questionable; The clashing borders are a bold choice and in general the cover is not my cup of tea but I respect it.
absolute classic. already knew it and love how the title track closes it all down
Incredible album. So many amazing riffs, lyrics, and grooves. 5/5!
I don’t tend to really like prince all too much but this thing is amazing 5/5
What a treat to listen to this. It's flawless as far as I'm concerned and a certified masterpiece of pop. Prince was a true genius and one of the greatest musicians of all time. Taking time out of my day to listen to and appreciate Purple Rain was an absolute joy. I need more Prince in my life!
A classic album with no bad songs that revolutionized American pop (rock) music. The remaster changes the sounds of some of the songs. "Darling Nikki" sounds less heavy and hits less hard, but it is much more intricate with the new mixing/mastering.
An undisputed pop masterpiece, even among many people who normally hate pop music. There was something different about Prince. He brought in influences from a diverse range of music. His music was larger than life, tightly produced, sexy and danceable. No one else has ever managed to sound quite like him.
It's incredible that so much talent could be concentrated in single person. Of the non-singles, I most enjoyed Computer Blue, but every song on here is a banger.
An amazing and kinda weird one
Yess (Also 3 in a row I’ve heard before, what are the odds) If not my all-time favourite, definitely in the top 20 No bad songs, but if I had to pick the most skippable, I’d choose the one PMRC had their panties in a bunch over, “Darling Nikki”
Hard to argue with the greatest of this album. Catchy pop treats with soul and energy. 7 of the 9 tracks are memorable, which is an easy win.
The movie proved one thing - Prince had no business acting. But holy crap could he play a guitar. And no matter how he's doing it - spoken word, singing, falsetto, screaming, or just making cooing noises - his voice is perfect throughout. I was gonna say that even the weak songs are strong, but DARLING NIKKI is a little too self-indulgent for me, and it almost forced me to deduct one star. The 5-minute guitar-keyboard-strings conclusion of PURPLE RAIN redeems it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 28 🎧 LPs left to review: 973 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 8 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 9 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 8
PURPLE RAIN ☔
amazing
Prince… enough said
It’s a rare thing to watch a star form into a superstar in real time. Of course, it really happened over years and Prince paid plenty of dues. Plus, you might argue, “1999” was the real creative and commercial breakthrough moment. Still, this is the one that counts and it counts forever. Just how eternal is this record? Play this little party game. First level: place this in any genre and it’s one of the best of the group. Next level: place in every genre and it’s still the best. “Purple Rain” arrived with vision and purpose smack in the middle of the MTV era and during what some would call the most ‘80s year of a ridiculously productive decade for pop music. That Prince made a play for the throne among so many hit makers (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Springsteen, who still rank among the greatest-of-all-time) is astounding. But somehow, Prince made it look easy. And it came with ready-made visuals as a soundtrack to a movie that helped launch Prince into the stratosphere. And even if the film doesn’t hold up as well, the music sure as hell does. Iconic soon-to-be standards abound: “Let’s Go Crazy” is a tent revival rave-up; “When Doves Cry” is a famously bass-less ear worm with equal parts savvy hit-making and family therapy session; “Take Me with U” is a bouncy road trip with a signature Paisley Park vibe. Then there’s the god-tier closer and title track, which justifies every second of its 8+ minute epicness—masterful guitar work that out-solos even the hair metal of the day. Surely Slash took notes. You may argue with his choice of favorite color, but you can’t argue ownership. We might as well retire purple from the Rock game, because nobody but Prince can wear that color again without being an echo. The king is dead, long live the Prince.
When Doves Cry is my favorite on the album
DEARLY BELOVED
Prince is the best, he was amazing in concert!!
Banging, liked it all, great energy
Passionate vocals and surprisingly unique grooves combine into a genuinely stellar performance. Every track keeps me on my toes, toying with my expectations and not failing to deliver. Well worth their full 40 minutes of runtime. 5/5 -- "Will undoubtedly dip into it again!"
*****+*****
This album is a classic, no dull spots.
This might be the best album I've had thus far. The guitar work is just masterful (as expected) but man, the sound is just out of this world for several tracks. Computer Blue was an unexpected gem.
Always a classic
One of the top albums of the 2000’s garage rock revival. Really good stuff
Purple Rain by itself would be enough to make this a fantastic album; but throw in "Lets Go Crazy", "Darling Nikki", "When Doves Cry", "I Would Die 4 U" and it turns out I've been neglecting this album from my 'awesome album all the way through' list for far too long.
At a party recently someone asked me what would be my absolute, no hesitation go-to song to put on for everyone to end off the night. My answer was Purple Rain. That about says it all…the only issue I can even think of for this classic album is that Purple Rain is such a monumental piece of music that it almost can’t sit alongside any other songs as part of an album. That would certainly be the case if there weren’t so many other bangers on here as well. Still got the original vinyl of this one sitting in a storage crate. Just joined but it’s gonna be a tough one to beat!
Amazing. Listened to it twice back to back. A lot of the lyrics would be corny if sung by another artist. But Prince can pull it off because, well… he’s Prince. Love the story about Tipper Gore walking in on her daughter listening to Darling Nikki and having a proper freak out (leading to the introduction of the parental advisory sticker on albums). Game…blouses. 4.5/5
- Let's Go Crazy - The Beautiful Ones - Darling Nikki - Purple Rain
God Tier Album
Simply peak 80s pop
Classic!!!!
It’s Purple Fucking Rain
Of course... a favourite since its release
Before he got weird, fell out with the record company and changed his name to a symbol, there was this album. Not his first album, but without doubt his best. A ton of hits on here and I challenge anyone not to know the words to the majority of the songs. Nostalgia overload.

Un clásico, Purple Rain sigue siendo toda una obra de arte.
I loved this album. Prince is one of my favorite artists.
Loved it. Saved to my favourites
Love this album. Of course, growing up hearing this music connects to my childhood, creating a little bias, but that doesn’t really matter here. I like this and will listen to most of these songs monthly!
Purple Perfection
Fantastic album of '80s funk/pop. Love Prince. Let's Go Crazy is fun, Computer Blue is more relevant now than it was when it came out, Darling Nikki is the reason we have warning stickers, When Doves Cry is excellent musicianship, as is Purple Rain. Excellently crafted and played album.
One summer I was involved in local theater and spent a Saturday helping rig lights. The sound guy was testing the system and put on a cassette of Prince’s greatest hits. Up til then I only really knew When Doves Cry and, like, Batdance. I’ve been a big Prince fan ever since that day. 5 stars no notes. Songs added to Spotify: 2
🤩 just giving me absolute bangers. Definitely the album I'm most familiar with so far. But it absolutely deserves to be here. It's fun, sexy, impactful, and when you start picking it apart it holds so much depth and complexity. Prince really wrote the book on music that you could both dance and rock out to, and this is chapter 1.
Prince at the top of his game.
Mr. Rogers was a Brilliant musician...he recorded and produced the entire 1989 film Batman all by himself...just wonder what was in those pancakes he made that T.V. interviewer eat...
What can be said...
I miss Prince. Saw him three times live, the last time in a surprise concert in Montreal two weeks before he passed away. Just him, a piano and mic. RIP to the great one.
Fantastic. No surprise there. You hear a lot of these songs on the radio which really don’t do the fantastic production justice.
Still one of the best.
Listening to this album reawakened my Prince obsession.
Massively overlooked Prince - excellent album!
Takes me back to the best summer. Between 8th and 9th grade.
Amazing as always
I love prince. Amazing guitar player!!
Smash that highest rating! What's not to love? Yes some of the drum sounds are a little dated now, but they defined the times. "Let's Go Crazy" is an awesomely powerful starter. Many listens before accurately understanding the lyrics in places. "Take Me With U" - drums and synths fanfare before settling into mid-tempo love song with prominent female co-vocal. Fades out before.... "The Beautiful Ones" synth and electronic drums build before falsetto vocal that goes dramatically over-the-top (you can picture him on wailing on stage). Fades out with soaring guitar. "Computer Blue" feels like an lewd interlude in the stage act. Inextricable association with the choreography in to the movie. Also feels patched together from different tunes, like a prog rock suite. This leads into.... "Darling Nikki" great story in the lyrics, experimental studio sounds underlying a raging vocal and guitar. "When Doves Cry" - tour de force. Insert anecdote about chart-topping pop song without a bass line (recorded but removed from the mix). Intense but stark track cuts to.... "I Would Die 4 U" First of the "suite" recorded live in 1983 at Minneapolis' First Avenue club (scene of the film as well). Beautiful classic example of Prince's sound circa '83-84: electronic drums, female backing vocals, warm synths. Short single-friendly track that on the original LP drives into.... "Baby I'm a Star" The second of the live suite. Big drum count-in, polyphonic synths and party-like voices yield to high-energy track. Radio-like fade out and a quiet pause before... "Purple Rain" Wendy Melvoin's now-iconic chorused solo guitar starts the mood before the echo-dripping drum machine and Prince's emotional vocals bring in the Purple Rain. Classic ballad shape as the accompaniment builds, and we float out on the extended brilliant guitar solo, also recorded live at Minneapolis' First Avenue club.
A good album with quite a few songs I really liked. Like Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki and of course Purple Rain.
So cool! I think I wore out this cassette, it's my favorite Prince album. I forgot how good The Beautiful Ones was. Absolutely timeless.
I really loved listening to this again. All of the songs are great and there are so many amazing moments in the production, performance, and arrangements. It is one those albums that has a sound all its own.
Iconic album, what is there to say. I would die 4 u is such a bop. Prince forever. I hope we get some more of him.
I would die for you Lets go crazy Cool as always
Nothing better
Need more stars.
An all-time great pop album.
Listened to it for the 100th time, still great!
Comments: First time listening to Prince. The only thing wrong about this album is that it’s too short. Favorite tracks: Purple Rain, The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry Rating: 5/5
I mean it’s just excellent. Soothing sonic qualities. I really love how well composed it all is as well as the compelling lyrics
Just fantastic, what a great album.
The one where Prince blew up and achieved a supernova level of stardom. Where he took everything he had done until then and channelled it into something so striking and universally popular, full of hooks and hits, but without ever sacrificing his musical integrity. One of the greatest albums of all time, and not even Prince’s best. Just think on that for a moment. That’s how good ‘Purple Rain’ is.
A lot of people like Prince and I wasn’t sure why. I now know why. Amazing electric musical artistry. “Darling Nikki” was a bit much. “Purple Rain” is a church song. Other than that, the rest of the album I loved. 9/10
God it's just so amazing. Every song sounds so great and you could sit there and listen to the two main tracks When Doves Cry and Purple rain over and over again. A guitar player rivaled by so few but keeps in minimal on the tracks so when it comes in it's perfectly short. His vocals are amazing and featured on each track. The only knock against this is that he sounds even better in his live versions and I wish we had those instead. 9/10
Prince's masterpiece. From the moment the album starts with 'Let's Go Crazy' it has you hooked all the way. It's Purple Rain!
top tier greatness
Prince is HIM. This is so bombastic and amazing -- its not like TOTALLY my style and some of my favorite Prince songs are on other albums but this is awesome without a doubt
Guay. Un 5.
I mean, what’s there to say? It’s Prince. It’s Purple Rain. The soundtrack to one of the best musical movies of all time. Arguably the best opening and closing song to any album ever. Absolutely immaculate.
i would die 4 u
When I saw this album come up, I was excited because I always wanted to listen to it. I wasn’t disappointed. It is a synthy, moody pop masterpiece. Every song is so interesting in its production and the sounds just never get boring. Prince’s voice glides over this thing near casually. An absolute classic that deserves its right as one.
Could it be any more 80’s? Pure class from Prince and TNPG.
First offering that I actually have in my record collection. One of the best, it was great then and it's great now.
It's Prince and its Purple Rain. It's a 5
I hope that some day people will realize that Purple Rain is not an appropriate karaoke song. 5/5
Love this album. The beautiful ones is one of my all time favorite songs.
I'd like to be in a Roller Disco in the 80s listening to Prince, Michael Jackson and David Bowie. What a avant-garde, game changer album ! It really tells a story, like a movie, going through so many emotions and feelings.
If you have 17 minutes check Purple Rain live in Syracuse 1985: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bm03wqLY3Nc
Quintessential 80s!
I always forget how tight this album is. All bangers, as weird as that is to say.
This record is incredible. The title track is one of the greatest songs ever.
The best
daddy?
Close to perfection. Automatic party time when this album comes on.
Obviously
I had heard of this notorious album but it struck me as I looked at the track list that I didn't really know anything about it. Pop is far from my favorite genre. But this fusion of synth and rock is clean. When Doves Cry definitely stands out as my favorite song. Purple rain (the song) dragged on a little bit.
It's motherfuckin' Prince.
There's not much to be said here. Prince was a musical genius and talented beyond belief. Whether you love him or hate him, this is a perfect album with one of the greatest album closers of all time. Standout Tracks: Let's Go Crazy, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain
Love
I can't say enough about this album, so I won't. It's amazing! If you haven't heard it, listen to it. If you don't own it, but it. I'm going to need more stars.
Banger
One of the greatest albums of all time. Still a must-listen nearly 40 years after its release. 5/5.
Sublime
In a category of its own
This is one of the jewels of Prince, nostalgic and brings me back to the good old days of pop and new wave 👍🙏🙂
Geweldig, ook de eerste plaat die ik van vinyl kan luisteren in deze lijst. Knop vol aan en genieten!
Lekker man. Wat een muzikant en purple rain is een van de best gemaakte nummers ooit.
pruple
Ah, I'm gonna be completely biased about this album. 1 I very much grew up with. There are the obvious stand out tracks (Purple Rain, Let's go Crazy) backed up with a modicum of controversy (Darling Nikki) which make this the epitome of a naughty but ground breaking 80's, dare I say, masterpiece? The influence taken by Prince from James Brown, Sly Stone and who knows where, then mixed up and sent out through this album is simply amazing. Everything about this is 80's tastic with flare and colour in abundance. A momentous, monumental piece of complete genius out together and driven hard by a genius. Wonderful album. My 1st 5 star review.
Those was my 2nd album after Michael Jackson's Thriller. Every song is huge!!!
Bangers
Purple Rain/10
Pure 80s excess. This album is overflowing with ideas, each song is layers and layers of synths, huge reverby drums, virtuouso guitars, and charismatic vocals popping in and out of every range possible. It all (more or less) coheres around big catchy hooks and memorable choruses, then departs into extra codas, tacked on solos, refrains, and returns. The production and performances are so tight - its bursting at the seams and gloriously excessive without being distractingly busy or chaotic. It's obviously a pop album, but there's something ineffably wierd and singular about the conception and execution of these ideas that transcends genre.
Come on
Amazing album by an amazing artist! Computer Blue and The Beautiful Ones are my favourite tracks.
Prince is just like me fr (or at least I like to pretend). The true definition of a short king through and through! This album is straight up banger, banger, banger, banger! Some all time best songs ever made here even if some of the production is 80s-like.
A masterpiece. A couple of the songs are very much of the 80s, but the majority of this album is simply a timeless classic.
Wohl einer der grandiosesten Meisterwerke der 80er
The movie is not a representation of this album. The movie is not a representation of this album. The movie is not a representation of this album.
It's a nice album, great instrumentals. Would be 4 stars, but Purple Rain alone gave it the extra star. Such a classic.
Reviews are interesting. I think I most agree with the view that it is not a totally memorable album in the sense of a classic you keep returning to. More of a 4 star. However in the context of this list it may deserve 5.
Still one of my favorite albums of all time, start to finish. Great stuff.
Masterpiece, always ready to revisit
No notes. Perfect.
Love this album. Great first, great last, lots of fun in-between.
Already know and love this album. An original. Play when doves cry at my funeral. Let me have one single flash of creativity at a quarter of Prince’s strength. Take me with u is kind of a dud lol Baby I’m a Star v fun
Fokin ameizing, noto ahora de dónde se inspiraron varios artistas actuales t de esa época.
This was great! Never seen the movie or listened to a Prince album all the way through. But a great vibe, sexual sentimental, and fun all the way through!
A modern masterpiece in every way.
Do I like this more than Around the world in a Day? Possibly. Anyway it's fabulous. Let's go crazy, Darling Nikki particular highlights.
